Speaker 4 (00:50):
Today It is Aaron torres Is eight year anniversary with
Fox Sports Radio. I'm not sure when I started to
be honest with you. I think I started like in
September of.
Speaker 5 (01:02):
Like twelve or thirteen years ago.
Speaker 3 (01:03):
Yeah, eighteen eighteen?
Speaker 6 (01:05):
Yeah, okay me.
Speaker 5 (01:06):
Black socks. You black socks were the big topic, your
first shutting.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
How can they throw the World Series? What's wrong with that?
Speaker 6 (01:12):
What is.
Speaker 7 (01:14):
We've come full circle with all these guys. You know,
oh yeah, we saw whatever his faces.
Speaker 5 (01:19):
You know, that's a like, what.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
Are they say? Tartis artis Yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:24):
Life is a flat circle the earth.
Speaker 3 (01:26):
Life is a flat Did you see the pitch he threw?
Speaker 5 (01:29):
Yes, Oh my god.
Speaker 4 (01:30):
You have to throw the pitch to make sure that
the batter doesn't offer at it, otherwise it's not going
to be considered a ball. We're talking about the investigation
going around with Luis Ortiz. We'll get to that later on.
We do have a bunch to get to though this hour.
If you want to jump in, Aaron underscore Torres, I'm
as stinking genius one, So Twitter is the best way
(01:51):
to get a hold of us. I do want to
get to the MJ situation where he's going to be
working for ENDBC, and if you still think he's got
clat where people like, well, I've got to tune in
to the pregame show. I'm gonna hear what Michael Jordan's
got to say kind of you know, kind of like
what Shack and Kenny and those guys and Ernie have
to say. Are people gonna say, got to hear what
(02:11):
MJ has to say, got to tune into the pregame?
Does he still have cloud? Is he gonna say anything
of value to Aaron? Is he gonna be controversial? Is
he gonna let everything spill out? I'm not so sure,
but sure about that?
Speaker 3 (02:25):
What do you think?
Speaker 6 (02:26):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (02:26):
I think that's gonna be The interesting part of it
is what is the role gonna be. Obviously he's not
gonna be announcing games, So is he gonna do like
the big sit down before the game? What does it mean?
You know, Like, is he gonna be in an analyst role?
Because I think that's obviously like why we were so
intrigued by Tom Brady was you know, is he gonna
be critical? And I think he was. I thought Tom
(02:49):
Brady was fine. I didn't think he was as bad
as everybody made it out to be. But that's gonna
be the thing with MJ. Is he gonna be critical?
Is he even gonna be in a role where he
gives opinions? Is he just gonna give uh? Is he
just gonna new interviews? I just think it's gonna be
fascinating to see what actual role he's put into.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
Yeah, I'm curious about his demeanor.
Speaker 4 (03:05):
Also, and I will get into that later on because
there's a lot of different avenues to take on that.
Plus also we're gonna have a guest coming up now.
Felix Ojoe is the offensive tackle, the kid from high
school that just signed a three year guarantee to play
for Texas Tech at five point one million dollars in
(03:27):
nil money. That is a lot of de narrow for
a seventeen year old, right, my friend, that is that
breaks the bank right.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
Now on the nil deals right now.
Speaker 7 (03:38):
Yeah, it's a crazy story. Basically number one high school
senior going into a senior year this year. So he
just finished his junior year. By the way, his seventeenth
birthday today, So he just committed on his seventeenth birthday
and the birthday yeah is and yeah, nice little birthday
for him. And so yeah, his agent, Derek Shelby, is
(04:02):
somebody that I've known for a while, and I think
we're gonna get Derek on here pretty soon to kind
of break down. Listen, I would have to look into
it a little bit, but I believe let's see here. Accordingly,
I was gonna say, say go ahead, guy, Well, I
was gonna say let's go to him.
Speaker 4 (04:16):
Then lets a matter of fact, he's on the line
from Prestige Management. He is the agent for a Field
Joe joining us. Now it's Derek Shelby. Thanks for joining us.
Appreciate you coming on the show.
Speaker 6 (04:28):
Hey, how you guys doing good?
Speaker 3 (04:30):
Good? No, thanks for coming on.
Speaker 4 (04:32):
First things first, how long does it take to get
a deal like this done? A three year, five point
one million dollar deal. How long have you been working
on this?
Speaker 6 (04:42):
We've been working on this deal for probably about I
would say thirty thirty days maybe forty days total. Once
he done his visit, thanks ramped up pretty quickly. I
thought it would be a major contender as long as
(05:03):
he liked the school because he had. Of course, everybody
was after him from Texas to Ohio State, Florida to Michigan.
I think he ended up with probably seventy high major offers.
Seventy nine wow, schlship offers.
Speaker 5 (05:15):
So, by the way, today is his seventeenth birthday, right.
Speaker 6 (05:19):
Yeah, just turned seventeen. Imagine being sixteen sixteen yesterday he
turned seventeen today. You're six foot seven, about two ninety
and you just signed the biggest guaranteed contract and college
football history.
Speaker 5 (05:36):
Incredible.
Speaker 4 (05:36):
Wow, you know, I got to ask you, Derek, if
you said that he had over seventy schools after him,
do you take offers from all seventy schools?
Speaker 3 (05:45):
And it was Texas Tech the highest offer.
Speaker 6 (05:48):
You know, good question, though you don't take offers from seventy.
I told him when he got to like sixty five
or whatever it was, they may need to cut this down,
you know. So I honestly waited from the cut it
out to like five to seven schools, and honestly, when
you cut down the five to seven schools, Texas Tech.
But he's on that list, right, you know, so there
(06:11):
I mean, Notre Dame. Everybody was on the list, right,
but Texas Tech was not on that list. And I
had seen, you know that he went on a couple
of other visits that were not on that list. You know,
he went to Colorado, he went to another school, like, hey, man,
you need to go to Love can least see it?
Because Lovelick had been calling me and Tech has been
calling me, like, man, we would love to have a
(06:32):
shot at Ojo, you know, and a lot of people
don't realize, you know, I represent Nigerie Kennedy, the All
American Softball with the picture at Texas Tech, right R right,
of course, you know, so I had a relationship there
and then maybe so they were like calling me, say,
can the kid come out at least see what we have?
And we've done that and a lot of people don't realize.
I mean, Tech disinvested about two hundred and fifty million
(06:53):
in their football facility. It's top three in America. It's unbelievable.
And I think once the kid gets and see what
they had it, they was really, you know, very impressed.
Now keep it not mine, but sixty five to seventy
scholarship offers. His second offer we ever got was Texas Tech.
They were offered number two. Wow, so they've been they
would have been there early, you know, and they just
(07:14):
stuck with it, and he just kept wanting, can get
a shot at the kid?
Speaker 3 (07:17):
What what was it?
Speaker 4 (07:18):
Did Texas Tech give you the most money? And did
you have to say, hey, this is what it's going
to take to get it done.
Speaker 6 (07:24):
Well, you know what, the biggest offer ended up being
Texas Tech. And you know, we didn't start at the
number we finished with. You know, but going into this thing,
my number one plan for for Feetlift was to find
the best place where he can get to play early.
He wants to play early, and at his position that's
(07:47):
hard to get, that left tackle positions. I mean, that's
that's the crown jewel, right, you know. So he wanted
to play early but also be able to maximize his
most earning potential at the same time. So I knew
it'd be hard get in both, but that's what we
shot for. So when I met with Texas Tech, I
met with their gms and their staff. You know, they
(08:09):
mentioned what they could do it for one year. I
don't want. I want three, and I knew that would
be hard to get because no one does that in
college football because it's too risky, right, But I knew
with this family that I had, I wanted to get
this kid a secure future for him and his family.
So I want to do something that's unprecedented. So I
wanted a three year deal. Give me your number for
(08:30):
three years, And that's kind of how it got started.
Speaker 7 (08:33):
So let me ask you that there, because that was
something that jumped out to me right away. One as
much as you can share in any sport, not just football.
I mean, how often are these agreements beyond one year?
But then two I would have to assume there has
to be some sort of language because, you know, God
forbid the coach gets fired, God forbid the coach you know,
(08:57):
has to take a medical retirement.
Speaker 5 (08:58):
I mean, how does that work?
Speaker 7 (09:00):
Because obviously, you know, we know, like Arnie and I
ten minutes ago, we're talking about Lebron having a player
option going into this year. So how does that deal
work because I would have to assume there has to
be out s good forbid, something bad happens.
Speaker 6 (09:15):
Well, a good question for one very far feel between
to get any type of multi year deal said, no
one wants to do that in football. You know, they
want one year cause it protects down and what the
football people will say, it also protects the kid. So
let's say you bring in a kid and you give them,
(09:36):
you know, three hundred thousand dollars and he has a
fantastic year, he can ask for more of the following year,
you know, but also in the same token, you give
me prendred thousand dollars and he gets hurt, then he
gets nothing in the following year. Right, So there's risk.
There's risk on both sides in my opinion. And when
you sign with a school You're not signing with the coach,
(09:58):
You're signing with the school. So the coach leaves what
have you. It didn't really matter, you know. So of
course you want to take what the coach you signed for.
But the way we've done this deal was we're signing
for Texas Tech. And we loved coach Maguire anyway. He's
just a great guy and great staff. And all these
staffs were good. Texas people were fantastic. Ohio State was fantastic.
(10:19):
You know. It's just Tech is an aggressive attail and
they wanted to show the world that they mean business.
Speaker 4 (10:28):
You know, I'm interested about this, and I'm not talking
about Texas Tech, and I don't want you to bring
up any school, but was anybody, for lack of better words,
extra creative with the money, anything crazy or something that
was offered to.
Speaker 6 (10:43):
You or no?
Speaker 3 (10:43):
Not really?
Speaker 6 (10:44):
Well, I mean by point one is crazy enough, right,
you know, I mean that was a substantial offer. Utah
came at the last minute with a very very good offer.
You know, so every put their best but forward and
in the last week leading up best you know, I
(11:05):
knew what we already had, but I still would talk
to all the school things. Is this your best offer?
This your best offer? And even throughout the process, I
would ask maybe can you do two years? Can you
do three years?
Speaker 8 (11:16):
Right?
Speaker 6 (11:16):
And you know a lot of them did not want
to do that, and I understand that, right, you know,
So remember lots of good offers. The tech offer was
really really amazing, and I really wanted to have this
kid have an opportunity to be the biggest in history.
This kid has bright shoulders and you can handle it.
Speaker 3 (11:35):
Is this the future?
Speaker 6 (11:36):
Now?
Speaker 3 (11:36):
Is this going to be the future? Three year deals?
Speaker 6 (11:40):
You know what? This is the first one I think done,
you know, so, definitely such president Now, I don't know
if they can be the future or not. I mean
I think still for the school, they may see a
little a little bit too risky because football is just
so hard. Now. You may see three year deals in
other sports, right maybe you know, basketball possibly and mother sports,
(12:00):
but football, I mean you can get hurt on every play, right,
you know, so a lot of that can be seen
as a lot of risk, you know. But look at
my job to do as best for my client, you know,
so I fought like hell to get him the best
deal in history of the game.
Speaker 7 (12:13):
And explain to cause I find this part fascinat you
were talking about the benefit and drawback for both sides,
and you talked about the opportunity to play early, because
I think about it and it's kind of fascinating, right,
is that if he goes to a place where maybe
he can't play early, then it not only hurts his
earning potential for his freshman year, but then also a
sophomore year because he didn't play. So it's basically like
(12:36):
you kind of had to find that sweet spot of,
like you said, a spot where he can go compete
for the starting job right away if he's good enough
obviously earn it. Yeah, I don't even know where I'm
going with I just think it's an interesting dance.
Speaker 6 (12:49):
I'm know exactly where you're going, and what you're saying
makes sense. Well, keep in mind, all these schools have
starting like tackles already, sure, right, and in a lot
of cases, you know, you know, let's say, for example,
of school like Texas coming off of a national championship
runner up, you know season, you know they have a
(13:09):
starting left tackle. You know, if that's starting left tackle
is making ten dollars, I can't go in there and
ask them to get a Felix twelve dollars right, because
he's a starting tackle. He's than all American, right, and
he's already been there two years, you know, so the
roster had to match up perfectly as well to where
it just so happened that I believe the left tackle
a TECHNI be a senior this year, this would be
(13:29):
then he'll be drafted. He's the probably first second around
draft pick anyway, So that spot's going to be open now.
So that's why we're going to go there and get
a chance to compete early for that for that for
that position. So that everything has to line up, and
it's just a perfect situation, a perfect storm. And you know,
and when you when you deal them with those Red
Raiders out there, it's all about them. This is this
is their professional team, you know.
Speaker 3 (13:51):
I'm sorry, Derek. Where does all this money come from?
Where's all this money coming from?
Speaker 6 (13:56):
Well, this is part of the REP share, right. So
with the new House settlement, that REP share, each school
gets about twenty point five million that they can spend,
and they they spend that money percentage wise based on
the sports, and football always gets the most. Every single
rule for nchba's gonna be based about football, period because
that's what carries everybody, right, you know. So this is
(14:18):
a REP share deal now sreat House settlement. The numbers
are coming from you know, the donors and the you know,
different sponsors and all that. Now you can still you
will still get that, right. But but the new House
settlement rule, anything over six hundred dollars has to be
afforded and approved by Deloitte, which I don't know how
they're gonna do that with thousands and thousands of kids
(14:39):
playing sports. How they get I got the time to
approve a six hundred dollars deal, But this is a
REP share deal, so this comes out of that. So
that just even speaks more highly because this is basically
thirteen to fifteen percent of that whole REP share that
they're getting on one kid, right, so they have to
make sure it's the right type of kid, you know.
And when we met with them and went over these numbers,
(15:00):
you know, they ask phenomenal questions. You know. James Blanchard,
the GM, he's unbelievable. He's good at what he does,
and he's like, I need to know what the kid
that can he handle this if we do this, can
he handle it?
Speaker 5 (15:12):
You know?
Speaker 6 (15:13):
Can you handle being in that locker room? But just
on your shoulders? You know. So for them to make
this this gesture, they had to fill it with the
right fit too.
Speaker 7 (15:25):
Let me ask you, though, Yeah, let me ask you this, Derek,
in your experiences and I know this whole nil stuff
is early, and I think this is what you're getting
to is like, you know, in the pros, it's just
you know, all salaries are public, and it's just, hey,
Lebron's the best player, so he's going to make the
most money. But you know, you hear about locker room whatever,
(15:46):
what is it like? What have your experience has been
like in a college locker room because obviously everyone's going
to know what this kid's quote unquote salary is or
number is or whatever. Is it like the pros where
it's just, hey, he's you know, he's the building block
that the whole team's built around, and you know he's
our top NFL draft, you know, prospects, so of course
(16:07):
he's gonna make the most.
Speaker 5 (16:08):
You understand the point I'm trying to get to. I'll
stop that.
Speaker 6 (16:10):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, So in the college locker room, like
this right, the older guys who are also making some
pretty good money, they're going to test them early. You know,
you got a high school kid coming and making all
this money, but you want to get tested early, you know,
you know, are you tough enough? Are you ready? Because
they want to they want him to be good. They
want to win the national champion. They need him to
be good.
Speaker 2 (16:30):
Right.
Speaker 6 (16:30):
But the good thing about Tech is that he's not
the only millionaire in that locker room. There is multiple
in that locker room that are already there, right, you know. So, yeah,
even though he has the big ticket, right, you know,
there's other guys that matter. They're making good money. They're
going to take them under their wings like any supper
class some wood and make sure he's ready and prepare
(16:52):
you know so, iron sharpens iron, you know, you know so.
But when he gets in there, they're going to try
to bust him up, It's like they do everybody else,
and make sure he's ready to come up and compete.
Speaker 4 (17:01):
You mentioned you got Kennedy your soft softball, right, Texas,
Tech is a softball power. She got a million dollars
that's got to be the highest for softball.
Speaker 3 (17:10):
Is a matter what.
Speaker 6 (17:12):
Yeah, what I have been able to do. You know,
when she first left Stamford and we got her to
Texas Tech, we we we we we've done that deal.
That's something I negotiated, and that's the biggest deal in
the sports history, you know. And now we've just done
it again for football, you know. So it's pretty pretty
awesome that. You know, me and my partner were Shot Phillips,
(17:33):
who owned Prestige Management. We owned the company, and we
we've been able to negotiate the two biggest deals in
those two sports in the history of the game. So
I mean and and but keep in mind though we're
not done. I mean, we represent Darius Aacoub junior who
would be a top five lottery take out of Arkansas. Wow.
You know, we represent we represent the number one volleyball
(17:54):
player in the country, Brooklyn to Lay out of Kentucky,
who would be the national player of the Year of
the sophomore. You know. We represent Nate Marshall, one of
the best adventures in football freshman at Michigan. We represent
Dylan Vett, a seven ft two fourteen year old pena
I'm out of Colorado who maybe the American whimby Wow right, Wow,
you know, we represent Cooper Hackett, the number one off
(18:16):
at a tackle in the twenty seven class, right, you know,
and we thought about being said, you know, you know,
we we're covering operations the best we can. We have soltball, volleyball,
you know, football, basketball. You know, we kind of spread
it a little bit, and we want the right type
of kids and my type of family.
Speaker 3 (18:33):
You don't take everybody, do you do, weekend radio hosts.
I'm just just yeah, yeah.
Speaker 6 (18:38):
Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 5 (18:42):
I actually have one last question question about Felix.
Speaker 7 (18:46):
Obviously, you know, record setting, congrats to you and him,
but obviously, look, let's have it honest conversation here. Is
that I think the outside world thinks, hey, he's quote
unquote just taking money just because it's the best offer.
Do you do you believe that in his three years
at Texas Tech they will field a team that's good
enough to compete at the top of college football Outside of.
Speaker 6 (19:06):
Him, I'll tell you this right now, Texas Tech will
make the college football playoffs this year. Oh wow, and
they will be a top four seed.
Speaker 3 (19:20):
Well wow, good, yeah.
Speaker 6 (19:24):
Yes, Texas Tech has brought in some of the their
portal class coming in. Is all the charts. Texas Tech
is building a dynasty right in front of our eyes,
and people are starting to pay attention to it. When
you got when you got guys like John Sellers and
Cody Campbell. You know two guys that you know the
(19:44):
founders of Texas Sebilegal Oil and Gas, who are multi
billionaires who are in their forties, who played football. They're
coming to win, and unlike some schools, they're about to
put the money where their mouth is. They have to,
they have to spend and compete. It's hard to beat
Texas and Ohio State and Alabama and Georgia. It's Notre
(20:05):
Dame in Michigan. It's hard. Those guys have been winning
for forty fifty years, you know, but Texas committed to
doing that. I mean they have a Big Twelve championship
for softball this year, the track team won the Big
twelve Championship, the national championship. I think you know they're
winning all of the place. They're foot basketball team within
the lead eight this year, right, you know, so they're
they're they're doing this right.
Speaker 4 (20:27):
Well, well, I think before we go, could they ever
overtake the popularity of a Texas.
Speaker 8 (20:32):
It's gonna be always gonna be hard to beat Texas
because of Texas, but they're going to compete every in
every single sport but the best in the country.
Speaker 6 (20:44):
And I'm telling right now Texas Tech will be in
the college football playoffs this year. I love.
Speaker 7 (20:51):
I'll add this too, is you know, everybody talks about
the money. I can't speak to Felix. I'm not gonna
lie and say I've watched him a ton. I enjoyed
the hell out of watching Naja Kennedy this year, and
that was such a fun run.
Speaker 3 (21:03):
She was great.
Speaker 7 (21:04):
Yeah, and it's like, you know, every the story is
about nil and then you're just like, oh, she's awesome
and really fun to watch. And I think, you know,
I think Arnie, you and I will probably talk about
this after Derek gets off. But there's all this perception of, well,
these guys get paid now. It's like the sports are
still awesome. I was at the Final four. It was incredible.
Watching Nija Kennedy lead that team to the brink of
(21:25):
a national championship was awesome. I don't want to speak
for you, Arnie, but I can't wait to see Felix
and see what he can do with Texas, Texas.
Speaker 6 (21:32):
I will tell you this. You know, a kid like Nija,
for example, I swear to you that decision was not
based on money. Felix Ojo same thing when the number
was first offered. And if me or you, I'm saying
hell yes when he confinished the.
Speaker 5 (21:51):
Sentence, I know Arnie would say yes, right.
Speaker 6 (21:52):
Yes, No. It took Niga over a month to make
her decision. Wow, then wasn't about the money. Okay. It
took Felix over a month to get to this decision,
you know. And that's the credit to their parents. And
these kids have fantastic parents. So when we're out recruiting kids,
(22:13):
we look for that. We want a certain type of
kid with a certain type of parent, right, they have
the right expectations. These kids parents are fantastic. They're all Americans,
just like their kids are, you know. So they were patient,
they research, you know, they both they make good livings,
and you know, they wanted to do something special, but
they also want to make sure there's the right fit
(22:35):
for their child. And in both of these situations, the
child made the decision. Yep, you know, and that's how
it should be.
Speaker 4 (22:42):
Love it Hey, of course, Derek Shelby agents who field
those shall We certainly appreciate you coming on. You've been
very candid. We'll have to do it again. Best of
luck with your other clients and and we'll certainly have
you on again.
Speaker 6 (22:54):
Thank you you guys to have a wonderful night, Happy forth.
Speaker 3 (22:57):
Thank for Derek.
Speaker 4 (22:57):
Derek, she be interesting stuff. We'll come back in and

Speaker 3 (23:48):
All right, good evening, everyone are in Torres.
Speaker 4 (23:50):
Arnie Spanier in for Jason Smith and his best friend
Mike Harmon right here on Fox Sports Radio. Thanks to
Derek Shelby for stopping on by interesting interview.
Speaker 3 (24:01):
I have to say that Aaron.
Speaker 7 (24:02):
I thought it was I can't speak to anybody else.
I thought it was very interesting, and I give him credit.
I thought he was actually very candid about the process.
Speaker 4 (24:09):
I learned a lot because I never really knew what
exactly goes on with this. Like first of all, I
was curious how many schools, you know, when you're a
top notch high school athlete, how many get to offer you?
Speaker 3 (24:22):
You know, how many are coming after you?
Speaker 4 (24:23):
He said, what, sixty five to seventy doesn't take bids
from all seventy of them, that's got to be crazy.
He took bids from five to seven. Texas Tech was
the highest one. They didn't start at a number and
finished at that same number. So it shows me there
was some negotiations going on there, but the three year guarantee,
I guess some schools said Nope, we can't do that.
Speaker 3 (24:45):
Texas Tech stepped up with that.
Speaker 7 (24:47):
Yeah, I was gonna say, I think that that speaks
to you know, listen, not just the money, but the
year over year commitment. And that's why, you know, listen,
let's be candid, that's probably why Texas Tech, you know,
outside of just the raw dollars was part of it,
is that this kid, now for the next three years,
knows that he is set. Obviously, you know, five million
(25:08):
dollars is great money at any point in your life.
But but you know, I mean to to Derek's point,
he could commit to Texas and if it's only for
one year and he gets hurt, he's got nothing. So
you know, I guess when you're a Texas Tech or
you're not. Maybe the better way to put it is
when when you when you're in Ohio State or Texas,
you can maybe get away with some things that Texas
Tech can't. But the one thing I will say, by
(25:31):
the way, I see somebody in the comments, oh, you're
glazing him by asking by asking how good?
Speaker 3 (25:36):
Like I saw that.
Speaker 4 (25:37):
Let me read that when Michael says, okay, erin, I
know this guy's your friend. But the glazing right now
by him and the teeing up from you is crazy
asking the kids agent if Texas Tech is putting good,
good team together, what's his agent going to say, No,
they're gonna be bad the whole time.
Speaker 3 (25:51):
In your defense, he has clients that are going to go.
Speaker 4 (25:55):
To all types of colleges and if they weren't gonna
be good to go, well, look, I'm not going to
compete for a championship or anything like that, but it's
gonna be some trying times, but they'll get better something
to that effect.
Speaker 3 (26:07):
Well, I think that's a fair question.
Speaker 7 (26:09):
I thought it was a totally fair question, and a
couple of things on that one. First of all, I
did ask him. I said, do you think he'll you'll
have a team to compete at the top of the sport,
And he said he'll have a team good enough to
make the playoff?
Speaker 3 (26:21):
Well out of four?
Speaker 6 (26:22):
What four?
Speaker 7 (26:23):
Yeah, I mean the Big twelve gets an automatic bid though.
So so the only point I'm trying to make is,
I mean, because the insinuation is the kid only chose
it because of money, and he's gonna this is if
I had to ask the question over the insinuation is
that he only chose because of the money, and that
he's gonna go to a bad team and a bad program,
and they're gonna stink for the next three years. And
(26:43):
who cares how much money you're making if you lose
every game. So that was why I asked the question.
And then I think to his point, like, listen, this
is a world where you have to be willing to spend.
Texas Tech is and they are putting together a very
competitive roster, at least in the Big Twelve. I mean, listen,
the Big Twelve essentially has an automatic bit. I know
that they say it goes to the five highest conference champions.
The Big Twelve champ is always going to get into
(27:05):
this college football playoff the way that it's constructed, So.
Speaker 5 (27:08):
You know, I think it's different.
Speaker 7 (27:10):
You know, one thing I would have been curious about
is and I want to ask, but it kind of
just didn't really come up in the flow of the conversation.
Is you know, there's such a perception that it's like
the SEC and the Big Ten and everybody else. Like
I wonder, you know, does he regret not being able
to play in the SEC or whatever? But I don't know.
I feel like I learned a ton and yeah, I
(27:31):
thought I thought it was a very interesting conversation on us.
Speaker 4 (27:34):
No I And like I said, we certainly learned a
lot from it. Does that mean he can't transfer?
Speaker 5 (27:38):
Well, that's the part that's confusing to me.
Speaker 4 (27:40):
I mean, if he wants to transfer the Contractsnoll on void,
I'm I'm assuming yeah, I mean, probably something we should
have asked there.
Speaker 7 (27:46):
That's where to me it gets very confusing. Is and
what he said, well, I'll tell you what he said
was for people who missed it. If everybody would have
missed it, this was the number one junior offensive tackle
in America. So basically going into a scene year committed
to Texas Tech today.
Speaker 5 (28:02):
Uh and in the.
Speaker 7 (28:03):
NIO world, where you know, numbers are very vague and
nobody really knows. It was put out there that he
signed a three year, five point one million dollar contract,
but he did say, well, he committed to the school,
not not Joey McGuire. You know, since since everybody thinks, oh,
he's my friend, I'm not going to criticize. All I'll
say is, if for some reason Joey McGuire wasn't there,
(28:26):
I would assume that that you know, both like both
sides would maybe try to reconsider that whole situation. But
uh but yeah, no, I thought it was really interesting,
and like you said, is that I I will be curious.
You know three already. Three years is a long time
in anything.
Speaker 3 (28:43):
Oh yeah, yeah, no doubt.
Speaker 4 (28:45):
Matter of fact, there's a few things I want to
touch about what he had to say. We'll get back
to that, but first let's see what's trending. We checked
back in with her buddy, Steve the Sager to see
what's going on, what's happening out there.
Speaker 10 (28:55):
To Seger, guys, it's yeah, a good interview and a
good get. That was good.
Speaker 3 (29:00):
You're welcome.
Speaker 10 (29:02):
Yes, it was good, speaking as honestly as objective as
I can be. It's something I would have listened to
in the car if I never worked here.
Speaker 6 (29:09):
It was very interesting. Thank you.
Speaker 10 (29:10):
As for the Major League Baseball we mentioned an hour
ago that at this point of the Dodgers' rotation, every
time that comes to this part, they don't have any pitching.
So tonight the first three pitchers, yeah, absolutely, Ben Casparis,
Jack Dryer and Noah Davis on the mound for the Dodgers.
Those three in a row. Houston's up eighteen to one
in La in the bottom of the eighth inning. In fact,
(29:33):
Noah Davis allowed ten runs in the sixth. It is
the first time this century that the Dodgers have had
a double digit inning against them. The last time was
when Fernando Tettis Senior hit the two Grand Slams in
the same inning in April of nineteen ninety nine for
the Cardinals at Dodgers Stadium. Also in progress the game
(29:53):
in Sacramento, the A's led six nothing against Justin Verlander,
who's zero and five for the Giants. He lasted three innings.
Now a six nothing over the Giants in the top
of the six and the Royals lead nine to three
at Arizona top of the seventh inning. White Sox were
three two winners at Colorado, the loss to Antonio Senzatela,
who's three and twelve, but he did lower his era
(30:14):
to six and a half. Baltimore a three to two
winner at Atlanta. Charlie Morton the win seven strikeouts in
five and a third. The loss to Spencer Strider in Atlanta.
Cleveland has lost eight games in a row. The Guardians
left ten men on base and lost two to one
to Detroit. Milwaukee won six to five at Miami with
a run in the eighth. Toronto won on a tenth
inning throwing air, four to three over the Angels. The
(30:37):
Blue Jays the first place. Blue Jays have won six
in a row. Meanwhile, the Yankees have lost five straight.
The Mets beat him at home six'. Five mets in
THE nl second, place but just a half game Behind.
Philadelphia philly lost at home nine to six To. Cincinnati
padres won in ten innings three to two Over, texas
as The, rangers with runners in scoring, position went one
(30:59):
for twelve At, wrigley The cubs hit eight home, runs
a franchise record eleven three the final over the Rival.
Cardinals minnesota on a solo homer bottom of the, ninth
Edged Tampa bay four to. Three boston started today with
an eleven two win At washington on this, Holiday Trevor
story four, hits four, RBIs including a, homer and At
(31:21):
Seattle mariners six nothing Over pittsburgh Cal raley with two home.
Runs he has thirty five and seventy four. RBIs. Here
on the fourth Of, July Carlos alcarez advanced to the
fourth round At Wimbledon women's number one. Arena sablenka won
THE wnba is off. Tonight Caitlin clark will be missing
a fifth straight Game saturday with a groin.
Speaker 6 (31:41):
Entry back to, you.
Speaker 3 (31:42):
Thank you very, Much steve The sager on the.
Speaker 4 (31:45):
Updates of, Course Aaron, Torres Arnie spanier in for the
guys Like Jason smith is his best, Friend Mike. CARMON
i get a feeling that's going to be the future
three year guarantees now and that's going to open up
A Holkada.
Speaker 3 (31:56):
Warbs is it?
Speaker 2 (31:57):
Not?
Speaker 3 (31:58):
Torres what do you?
Speaker 7 (31:58):
Think, WELL i think to his, point you, know it's
dangerous for both. Sides and BUT i do think listen,
AGAIN I i If Texas tech fans are the, car
they're probably, happy but they're probably annoyed that we keep
kind of putting them a tier below certain. Teams but
LIKE i do think there's something, too like if You're Ohio,
state do you want to invest all of that in
(32:20):
a player that probably isn't gonna start his first year
and then on top of, it you, Know god forbid
an injury, Happens and SO i don't, KNOW i don't know.
Speaker 3 (32:29):
Which have asked how much of it is? Upfront? Too
is that that would have been a good question to.
Speaker 7 (32:33):
Know, well What i'm curious about because some states allow
nil in high, School so is that you know part
of the.
Speaker 5 (32:41):
Deal do you do they?
Speaker 7 (32:42):
Get does he get something before he signs With Texas?
Tech WHAT i think is also interesting is that that's
that is the quote unquote from to the question that
you asked The house. Settlement for people who don't, Understand
i'll be. QUICK i know we're up against. It each
school has twenty million to spend however they, want and
then anything outside of that has to be reviewed by
(33:03):
this outside kind of. Panel, yes, so, well so the
first twenty you do whatever you, want so you, know
you could give somebody ten million in THE ncaa can't
do anything about.
Speaker 5 (33:12):
It so the only REASON i bring it up is.
Speaker 7 (33:14):
Because in, theory this kid can still sign endorsement deals
outside of just this quote. UNQUOTE i know we're not
supposed to call it a, salary but it is what it.
Speaker 5 (33:23):
Is it's a. Salary AND i thought it was very,
interesting good good.
Speaker 7 (33:28):
LUCK i thought the best question that was asked Was Arreadie, spanier, like,
hey you got room for two weekend radio hosts because,
UH i could.
Speaker 5 (33:34):
Use a three year.
Speaker 3 (33:35):
Guarantee he.
Speaker 4 (33:36):
Said those two, GUYS i forgot their, name the oil
and gas.
Speaker 5 (33:39):
GUYS i know one Is Cody. Campbell he's a Prominent uh,
yeah do they own a radio.
Speaker 3 (33:43):
Station, yeah ask gag for a. Friend i'm. Asking i'm
asking for a.
Speaker 5 (33:48):
Friend the seventeen years old man must be nice.
Speaker 4 (33:51):
That they're making a big dent In Texas tech. Sports
i'm not just talking about, football you, know as he
mentioned the softball Player, kennedy.
Speaker 3 (33:59):
And i'll be, serious awesome she.
Speaker 7 (34:01):
Is AND i remember it being a big story when
she signed that, deal AND i said it AND i
mean it is her making money did not make me
enjoy that run any. LESS i was, Like, oh she's
awesome and really fun to, watch, Right she's like The
Caitlin clark of. Softball it's like you can't take your
eyes off of her when she's on the. Mound and,
(34:22):
yeah good for. Her and you, Know Texas tech was
great and softball and now obviously you, know football is
a little bit of a different deal.
Speaker 5 (34:27):
With eighty five, guys but it's still.
Speaker 4 (34:30):
Interesting if you want to jump, in you can give
us a, tweet real, Simple aaron, Underscore, Torres i'm its
thinking genius.
Speaker 3 (34:36):
One we'll come.
Speaker 4 (34:37):
BACK i do want to talk a little bit About Luis,
ortiz what's going on there with the gambling, Situation so
we'll get to that also coming up next right here
On Fox Sports.
Speaker 2 (34:46):
Radio be sure to catch live editions Of The Jason
Smith show With Mike harmon weekdays at ten Pm, eastern
seven Pm.
Speaker 4 (34:53):
Pacific all, right good evening, Everyone Aaron, Torres Arnie, span
you're in for the, Guys Jason smith And Mike harmon
here On Fox Sports. Radio, well we're moving right along.
HERE i do want to get To luis Or. Tez,
well we have. Time he's the pitcher for The Washington.
Nationals they are going to investigate. Him we'll leave it
(35:14):
an investigation right. Now to gambling, ALLEGATIONS i. Guess back
On june, Fifteenth ortiz's first pitch of the second inning
terran the arose arena was not even close to.
Speaker 3 (35:27):
The strike, Zone.
Speaker 4 (35:28):
Aaron that set off an alert that was reportedly triggered
by that action On ortiza's first pitch of the, inning
being bet.
Speaker 3 (35:37):
That it was either going to be a ball or
a hits.
Speaker 4 (35:40):
Batsman the next incident on similar action was another bad,
miss and that was On june twenty, seventh in the
top of the third, inning and he had another bad
miss out. There you know what they, say where there's,
smoke there's. Fire this is not good for the gambling.
Industry you gotta wonder here we're investigating a couple, people
(36:02):
how many people are getting away with it that were
not investigating or is this just like a one or
two time?
Speaker 6 (36:08):
Thing what do you?
Speaker 5 (36:09):
Think, well it's, funny you.
Speaker 7 (36:10):
KNOW i was filling in With Dan byer yesterday For
cavino And rich and we talked about, this and What
i'd be curious about, is obviously there was a disproportional
amount of money on this specific, result a ball to
lead the third.
Speaker 5 (36:23):
Inning of this specific.
Speaker 7 (36:24):
Game What i'd be curious about is how much is
regularly bet right on that type of, hypothetical and then
how much was bet on? This you, know BECAUSE i
was Telling, DAN i was, like you, know that's the
kind of fun bet that you're sitting in a sports,
book you're with your, BUDDIES a let's put ten dollars,
on you, know a ball to lead the inning or
(36:45):
strike to lead the. Inning it's not something that you're, like,
Oh i'm gonna put fifty grand down, on you, Know
and So i'm just, curious and you, know like this
is a great question for A Bernie fratto or A Todd,
furman like how much money and how many spots would
have to be, wagered and how different it is than
the normal wager on that specific, situation because it's, just you,
(37:08):
know one pitch in one of one hundred and sixty
Two Major League baseball games doesn't raise a red. Flag
it's the amount of money that was bet on. It
SO i find it fascinating and it's. Crazy But i'll
also say, this those integrity, firms they know what the
heck they're.
Speaker 3 (37:24):
Doing oh, yeah oh, yeah you're right about.
Speaker 4 (37:26):
That what set the alarm, off the alert off was
the amount of money that was bet on. It but
that pitch was way out of the strike. Zone you
got to put it way out there so the batter
doesn't swing at it or attempt to swing at. It,
yep it's got to be something so just egregious that
nobody's gonna go ahead and offer it that. Pitch that's
(37:48):
exactly what. Happened you think this goes on a. Lot
you think this is kind of going under the radar
or we're catching everybody out.
Speaker 7 (37:54):
THERE i really, believe and maybe it's Maybe i'm dumb
for saying. THIS i think these integrity firms are so,
good and you, know LIKE i, know you Have Todd
furman on your show Every, sunday, right he says that,
actually like legal sports betting is actually you, know like
like there's less sketchy stuff going on now that it's,
(38:15):
legalized because you have all these integrity firms that are following,
it you, know as opposed to if it's, underground.
Speaker 5 (38:20):
If it's, this if it's.
Speaker 7 (38:21):
THAT i actually don't think that a lot of stuff
is happening and going, unnoticed BECAUSE i, mean, Listen, arnie
how MANY i, Mean Malik, Beasley Johntay, Porter Louise. ORTIE
i mean we've had you, know seven eight of these situations,
Already Calvin, ridley on and, on and it's just, LIKE
(38:42):
i actually don't think BECAUSE i think that they're so
good at catching it and red flagging anything that's suspicious
THAT i actually don't think it's happening much more than
it's probably being.
Speaker 3 (38:51):
Caught do we have too many prop.
Speaker 4 (38:53):
BETS i didn't even know you could bet on what
the first pitch of an inning's gonna be in not
a little too.
Speaker 3 (38:59):
MUCH i, mean let's be.
Speaker 4 (39:00):
Honest, okay it used to be you bet the, game the,
line and you bet the over.
Speaker 3 (39:04):
Under then we started breaking it down in the.
Speaker 4 (39:06):
Quarters first, quarter of, halftime half, timeline second half. Line
then we started putting passing, yards rushing, yards receiving. Yards
now it's out of, HAND i mean betting first pitch
and all kinds of prop.
Speaker 3 (39:21):
Bets has it gotten too out of hand or?
Speaker 5 (39:23):
What, Yeah i've heard a few people reference. THAT i
don't think.
Speaker 7 (39:26):
SO i think you're a professional athlete making a lot of,
money be, responsible you.
Speaker 5 (39:30):
Know it's it's like anything.
Speaker 7 (39:32):
Else it's, like are there too many liquors because somebody
you know got sick and puked all over.
Speaker 5 (39:38):
Themselves it's, like not just be responsible and don't be a,
jerk you. Know AND i think that to, ME.
Speaker 7 (39:46):
I don't think it's on the gaming industry to say
we have too much because a couple athletes are getting.
Selfish and by the, way AND i know you know,
this AND i know the audience knows, This but these
guys get so much training on what they can and cannot.
Do if these, guys whether it's A John Tay, porter,
whatever gets suspended for the rest of their, careers, WHATEVER
i have zero sympathy because you know what you're signing up.
(40:08):
For you know the ramifications of getting Caught and how did.
Speaker 3 (40:12):
They get in that? Situation?
Speaker 4 (40:14):
Though did they gamble and lose? Money did they take a?
Bribe if it's, TRUE i, mean how much money can
they take a bribe for after those salaries In Major league?
Speaker 3 (40:24):
Basic, actually, well really.
Speaker 7 (40:25):
Quick Apparently Malik beasley reportedly had some pretty major money
problems and that was what led to. IT i can't
speak to This Luis ortis, situation, THOUGH i know we'll
get more information in the coming.
Speaker 4 (40:34):
Days all, Right, wow we're just flying by flying two
hours or in the, books we're halfway through The power
hours coming up. Next remember we got a bonus hour,
Too so if you want to get, In aaron Underscore,
Torres i'm it's thinking genius. One Aaron, torres already span
your in for the. Guys Fox Sports radio
