You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
Greetings, Welcome inside hour two The Jason Smith Show with
my best friend Mike Harmon. Well, I didn't call it
the Jalen Brunson Show. Mike, you're happy. You're happy with
that now, Bud, You're happy.
Speaker 3 (00:41):
I don't know. He's a hero and hero of the people.
He is the hero we all deserve, well deserve. I
don't know. I think people oftentimes get stuff that maybe
they don't deserve, and then others don't get it at all,
even though they work their ass off. I mean there's
a lot.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
Okay, okay, the White Sox have nine wins. Congratulate you, happen.
I'm almost a double digits, buddy, I know when did
you a double digits last year? Fourth of July?
Speaker 3 (01:10):
I don't know. I'm going to the game next Friday,
so that something you gonna get to play, you might come.
I I'm like, well, I'm trying to figure out how
I get to throw out a first pitch. So we're
seeing if we can do that. Even if I'm the
guy that gets booed and mocked for showing up, I'm
sure that's well. But but there were people when I
went to WrestleMania, see what I'd get to do. Bring
it back to that, people that paid for this all
(01:33):
all in experience, right, hang out with Seena, get your
picture of the ring. And then a couple of folks
paid some really astronomical money to where they got to
walk in as part of the entrance before the match,
but before the matches, like when they were announcing the
you know, the announcers coming down, Hey here to call Resum,
here's Pat Nagaby whatever else, and people would get to
(01:53):
walk down with them. Boy, they were lustily booed. I
couldn't even replay or try to articulate some of the
stuff that was being the invectives being flown at these people.
It was unbelievable.
Speaker 1 (02:10):
You feel good now you got you got in the
you gotta wrestling you feel good.
Speaker 3 (02:14):
Well, I mean it was germane to what we were
talking about. I mean, it just becomes a stream of consciousness.
I didn't plan it. I mean, I don't write out
a script for how I'm gonna respond to you. Now,
I leave that to other people. This is h spur
of the moment. How do I react to what Smith
has to say?
Speaker 1 (02:30):

(02:51):
It'll always pop up at the top of your screen,
so lock it in and ripped it up off. Here
we are nine seconds to go in the third quarter.
Houston continues to lead Golden State eighty six eighty two.
Rockets trying to stay alive again. They've been in They've
led the game most of the way here, but the
(03:12):
Warriors have been able to cut the lead down to
where it sits at four right now with three seconds
left in the third quarter. Meanwhile, I want to say
this because it's it's tough because he's not a big
superstar and clearly there are other point guards who are
more dynamic. But man, I'll tell you what, Fred van
Vliet may be the most underrated player in the NBA.
(03:34):
He's so incredibly solid. I feel like every decision he
makes is the right one. He makes big shots, he
knows when, he knows when to when to not, you know,
push for his shot, he knows when he's got to facilitate.
He's such a smart player. He's like a coach on
the floor. Like he really might be the most underrated
player in the NBA.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
I told you that fifteen and a half was a given.
Boom is at twenty on the night. Look, he's just
one of those guys. He's a glue guy, all right,
doesn't need to be the flashy name. And then he's
had his run like when you know in playoff runs
in the past, because his name is Van Veiet, that's
(04:14):
gonna get you a little bit of extra mixed there in.
I mean, he's had a fantastic career overall. I mean
talking about a guy that is average, what about fifteen
points a game, six assists, But a guy when he
was with Toronto, how many how many big games and
big moments did he have for them throughout their runs.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
And probably should have been NBA Finals MVP. Probably should
have been NBA Finals MVP, Like.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
I think we both argued for that on air.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
Yeah, he's one of those guys that in another era,
like Fred van Vliet would be. He'd be the point
guard of a team that won five championships with one
team his whole career, and it would be, Hey, we
had all these big superstar players, whether it was Kawhi
or anybody else, but boy, Fred van Vliet was the constant.
We get none of this done, not for him like that.
(05:01):
Like if in another era I could see him be
he was that guy, you know, eighteen year NBA career,
five titles, a handful of All Star appearances, all this stuff.
But that's the kind of career he could have had
another era. But he's see I mean, really, he might
be the most underrated player in the NBA. Yeah, when
the Rockets were terrible, they were terrible and they signed
Fred Vaanvliek, Why the hell was Fred van Vliet going there,
(05:22):
what is it? Oh, now, look, the Rockets are really good. Oh,
in just a couple of years, the Rockets have become
really really good. Fred van Vliet telling you, man, watch up.
Speaker 3 (05:30):
Well, you got to have those those crafty veterans that
come around three years, one hundred and twenty eight million
dollar deal. Yeah, that's that's why he Uh, he got
a lot of eyebrows raised.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
Like that guy.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
He's like, yeah, that guy, look what he's done to
bring those young guys along.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
So we'll keep you updated here. Going to the fourth quarter,
it's a two point lead. Rockets lead the Warriors eighty
six to eighty four. But look, the big story in
the NBA today. We've talked about this from a different
angle last hour. Greg Popovich is retiring from coaching. He
steps down as Spurs head coach. He had not been
coaching the team this year after suffering a mild stroke
(06:06):
earlier in the season. He stepped away, tried to work
back to be able to coach again. When he returned
to the team, gave a really big, tearful speech when
he met with the team in February. I'm working my
way back. But where he sits in his recovery now,
even though he's doing better, not quite up to the
riggers and the grind of coming back and being an
(06:28):
NBA head coach, which look, that's what happens to guys
like Phil Jackson when you get old enough to travel
and everything else, it gets to be really difficult. And
so he's not doing it, but he's going upstairs to
help run the Spurs as their director of basketball operations.
And so now it's a different era now in San Antonio,
but not too different an era because the guy who's
(06:51):
been coaching for him since Popovich left, Mitch Johnson, is
now named the permanent head coach for the Spurs and
Mike Harmon. This is the big thing about this. Sometimes
you have to wait a decade for a prediction to
see if you get it right or not. A decade,
a full decade a fighting You could go back, look
(07:12):
at my year.
Speaker 3 (07:13):
That would be year one of the show.
Speaker 1 (07:16):
Well you gotta go well even more, Yeah, you gotta
go back to a little bit more than a decade. Okay,
because and I got look at my Twitter, I quote
tweeted it from earlier today. Back in twenty fourteen, when
Becky Hammond got the assistant job main assistant job with
the Spurs. Remember was Becky Hammond and Tim Duncan got
the assistant jobs with the Spurs. We said it, then
(07:37):
this is set up. Papaovich is going to coach. He's
got a long time to coach. This is being set
up for Becky Hammond to take over when he's done.
She's gonna take over the Spurs when he is done. Now,
obviously he kept coaching. Becky Hammond decided to jump to
the WNBA, where she's had incredible success winning tu Cha
won her first year with Ace, won again. She's won
(07:58):
two titles in the last four years. Right, yeah, And
all of a sudden today a couple of people said,
oh boy, Becky Hammon would have been a great choice. Like, no, no, no, dude.
We always say we're tomorrow's takes the night before ten
years ago, Becky Hammond's gonna take over a decade. Now,
I didn't get it right because they didn't name Becky Hammond.
But still her name came up a lot today and
it was a bit but a decade, a decade. We
(08:19):
had to wait a decade for this prediction to see
if it came to or not, and it didn't. And boy,
I really think it could have. I really honestly think
that the right path for Becky Hammond would have been
and all of it was going right by I think
Greg Popovich is not coaching, is done coaching earlier than
he thought. Right, he's seventy six, but he still was
(08:40):
going to keep coaching. This was where Becky Hammond would
have to come be an assistant with the team for
a long term. She coached a game in twenty twenty
right when he got thrown out. First a woman to
coach a game when he got thrown out of the game,
and then I thought, Okay, she's got It's one of
those things where sometimes at a job, if you want
to do something really big, you have to leave and
come back, like you have to apprentice so everybody knows you,
(09:02):
but then you have to leave and go someplace else
really make your mark. Then you come back in a
bigger position, right, And that's what I kind of thought
she would have to do, where she would go, Hey,
she was there for almost a decade, then she goes
succeeds someplace else as a head coach, and then comes
back as the head coach of the Spurs, gets that
head coaching experience, so she jumps back in. She knows
the Spurs organization and out everything going on. She goes
(09:24):
and prove she's a head coach, then comes back and
as the head coach. But I think, you know, not
getting that chance to come back maybe is what hurt.
Because it's got to be It's got to be done
really careful. You're gonna have to talk about a woman
being the first head coach, full time head coach in
NBA history, And clearly, as you see where we are
with the varying opinions of DEI in the country over
(09:44):
the last few months now, it seems like it's to
be impossible for something like that to happen. But like
for her to do it, I thought it was a
case of she leaves, she goes and wins a couple
of championships, comes back, and then Popovich in a couple
of years retires and Becky had takes over. I really
thought that was gonna be it, but obviously now he
had to retire. She actually was asked about it today.
(10:06):
It's one of the big headlines on a couple of
different sports blogs. She said, look, I'm super happy in
the WNBA. I'm glad I jumped when I did. I'm
enjoying being here in the women's game. I'm enjoying doing
what I'm doing. Now. The WNBA has become a big
deal in and of itself, so now suddenly jumping to
the NBA might not be as big a thing as
it was a few years ago. But she was out there,
and really I thought it was gonna happen. I had
(10:28):
ten years, Mike Harmon, ten years I was waiting this.
I'd like, this is a ten year bold prediction. Ten
years and I just missed on it.
Speaker 3 (10:35):
But she gets to be a leader and legend in
the next iteration in that bridge at the WNBA side. Look,
if she were still on staff, how many times have
we seen the coach in waiting scenario? How often does
that actually work well? And not so much. But here
here's a chance where she would also had to just
(10:56):
be happy, content staying in her that role indefinitely. And
and if you're ambitious, like to your point, yeah, the
leave and come back. You know proof, you know, proof
of concept in another role with anothernother squad, in this case,
in a whole other league that you can come back.
(11:17):
But here's also a scenario where you have a guy
who's been on staff for quite a while has a
great rapport with your superstar for the next fifteen years
in Victor Wembman Yama. So you know you didn't even
have that, all right, they've got some upheaval on the
coaching staff. No, that was one of the things in
San Antonio is that you have had these long standing assistants.
Speaker 1 (11:38):
Right.
Speaker 3 (11:39):
Johnson's been part of the Spurs organization since what twenty fifteen,
twenty sixteen, so like he's waited his turn. He's coached
them in the in the summer League, and has been
the interim a couple of times during this process. But
for Becky Hammond, yeah, I mean I think everybody was
interested to see how that would play. And you saw
(11:59):
the void, says the cacophony of voices on it today.
How much the the current political swings would have affected Well,
we'll never know, right, I mean, because if she was
on staff and got bypassed, then then we have that conversation.
As it stands, you know, she's enjoying great success and
(12:20):
looking to dominate and like, what would they win by? Again?
What was it?
Speaker 4 (12:23):
One?
Speaker 1 (12:23):
One?
Speaker 3 (12:24):
Seventy eight.
Speaker 1 (12:26):
Welcome to the.
Speaker 4 (12:28):
W.
Speaker 3 (12:29):
Yeah, so I think she's doing just fine over there. Wait,
I've dominating.
Speaker 1 (12:33):
Yeah. And look and because of the rise of the
W in the last you know, just in the last year,
it's hey, maybe look now, jumping the to the NBA
and being the first female head coach in the league's astory. Okay,
that's something anybody would I gotta jumped in no matter
what kind of situation you're in. Sure, but it's not
like it would have been even two years ago, where Okay,
(12:53):
I'm coaching in the WNBA and I'm still trying to
figure you know, we're still trying to break through and
become a league that shares the sports headlines. But now
you're there, right, you were there, Kate. You had to
wait for Caitlin Clark to get to the W. She's there.
And now look at where the W is. I mean,
it's a nightly headline right. The WNBA is in a
perfect it's in a groove right now where the league
(13:15):
is just big enough where every game has star players
in it. It's not diluted at all with a lot
of you know, talent in too many places, the personalities
are big they've become big stars. The W has has
succeeded in the last year, and they're part of the
big conversation. So now you know, while, hey, yes, you
would jump to try to be that kind of trailblazer
and that kind of pioneer, right, but now it's like, well,
(13:37):
if it doesn't happen, Hey, all of a sudden, my
gig just got really really good, you know. I my
gig just got even better than it wasn't She's a
young at She's only forty eight, right, she's a young
head coach. It's got years and years ahead of her.
And it's I mean, really it's I mean, but I'm
telling you, I went back. I said, we talked about
this like ten years ago today about that kam and
so I forget who brought it up, and Sully's making
(13:57):
headlines on ESPN. I'm like, come on, man, it was
like a decade. But what do I expect, you know,
someone just looking for headlights?
Speaker 4 (14:02):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (14:03):
How about Becky Ham I's got back. Yeah, great, ten
years ago we talked about that. But ten years my Carmen,
that would have been well, I don't know if she
had been named head coach today, that might I don't
know that you get better than making a bold prediction
ten years in advance, where it was the first time
it could come true, right, Like, it's not like, hey,
eventually so and so is gonna do this, and they
have repeated chances at it, and they do it.
Speaker 3 (14:23):
Ten years later.
Speaker 1 (14:24):
It was she'll succeed Greg Popovich, and then ten years
go by and she succeeds Greg Popovich. That would have
better than that. My bold prediction of urban Meyer's not
making it through the first season with Jacksonville like that
was by that that and the Big Three in New
Jersey with Harden and Durant and Kyrie aren't even gonna
play twenty five games together, like those are the two best.
(14:46):
This would have blown that away because that's ten years
in advance. I would have made it.
Speaker 3 (14:49):
I would say this though, my favorite going to the
urban Meyer because I mean, it really is one of
my favorites. You were predicting such great heights for that squad.
You bail on them faster than all those failed Jets
quarterbacks over the years. That, hey, he's not my guy anymore.
I don't have to wait for that anymore. Wait, you
know what I mean? Like with that urban Meyer thing.
(15:10):
It took one or two and say it's like, wow,
I'm done with this. All right, this is a failure.
I admit, I admit I was wrong when they tried, when.
Speaker 1 (15:19):
They drafted Trevor Lawrence and they got Urban Meyer. Okay,
this team's going to the super Bowl the next five years.
And then in the middle of September, I said, forget it,
forget that. That's not happening. Instead, urban Meyer's not making
it to the end of the season. What you're crazy,
of course, urban mind. They just hired the guy. Yeah, yeah, Yeah,
he's not making it to the end of the year.
Guess what didn't make it to the end of the year.
(15:40):
Didn't make it.
Speaker 3 (15:41):
It's one of those things where you assume that once
he makes the first huge misstep, he's gonna course correct. Right,
he was supposed to be the smartest guy going. It
didn't work quite so well, did it.
Speaker 1 (15:54):
No?
Speaker 3 (15:54):
No, just kept getting worse, and then he got more
and more stories coming out of the locker room. Yeah,
and he may have fixed he may have damaged Trevor
Lawrence irreparably. Yeah, how about that? How about that?
Speaker 1 (16:09):
Let's let's further that his long effects. Still feeling the
effects of murdering Trevor Lawrence.
Speaker 3 (16:15):
It's after shocks like earth Man.
Speaker 1 (16:19):
Exit out about a Fresca exit swallowed off that it
would have been the best ball ten years. In almost
ten years, man, I'll get you almost. The Rockets lead
the Warriors by four ninety two eighty eight. Still a
lot of time left in this game, ten minutes to
go in the fourth quarter. We'll have more on this,
but coming up next, time to talk football. And while
the NFL Draft is in our recent rearview mirror, there
(16:40):
are still more stories every day about oh my goodness,
I can't believe you Doris Sanders did this. So there's
will be a little bit of that. But how about
just how good is the quarterback class for next year
in the NFL Draft? The perfect guest to talk about that.
Stop it's supposed to be really good, The perfect guest
to talk about that. Coming up next right here, Jason
(17:01):
and Mike. This is Fox Sports Radio Extra Cockfight.
Speaker 2 (17:05):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 4 (17:18):
What looking for look at one.
Speaker 2 (17:21):
To find FS one on your television, go to foxsports
dot com for details FS one.
Speaker 4 (17:28):
Looking for look at for a.
Speaker 1 (17:30):
One Fox Sports Radio The Jason Smith Show with my
best friend Mike Harmon. That might be that might be
my new favorite. Drop at right, and that might be
my new favorite one. Yeah, look at for the Rockets.
Time out on the floor, Fred van Vliet, the most
(17:52):
underrated player in the NBA. Another Big Three. It is
now a twelve point lead for Houston in one oh
one eighty nine in the fourth quarter, Steve Kerr getting
a time out. Hey, you know, eventually it's gonna end
for the Warriors with two older players, Maybe it comes
to a screeching haul tonight in Game seven's a walkover.
(18:15):
But still some time left, Some time left. But speaking
of time, every day you can mark time by the
negative headline surrounding Shador Sanders, and today was no different.
Another report that hey, guess what, Chador Sanders now feuding
with Cleveland radio host because a guy that works for
his team posted a video of him at a hospital
in Cleveland and now at Chador every single day at
(18:37):
Shador Sanders is the worst. My goodness, can we stop
joining us now on the hotline. Nobody better to break
down all the big news in the NFL and tell
us just how good the twenty six quarterback class is
gonna be than a longtime friend of the show Pete Feutech.
He is on Twitter at Pete Feutech. The website is
College Footballnews dot com. You're one stop shopping for everything
(18:59):
college football. Pete is the owner, editor, proprietor Grand Pooba Pete.
What's happening Man? Happy Friday?
Speaker 4 (19:06):
Every last several football seasons. I go on I believe
Thursday afternoons on Cleveland Radio to do my little thing
that I do there. And I was telling him, if
they've pled good, god fearing lives, then you know they
you know, they put their taxes in on time, help
the neighbor lady take out their garbage. They will be
(19:26):
blessed enough to get Shadure Sanders for the content that
they are going to have on their sports radio show
throughout this whole thing that is the dreams of like
camp Ward. There's nothing to do with that. You know,
maybe he's good.
Speaker 3 (19:40):
Maybe he said he likes football. That's all it is, Pete.
Speaker 1 (19:44):
Yeah, that's boring.
Speaker 4 (19:45):
Is I think that that was like there was like
a like a ten minute span where there was like
twenty million hit the Google searches for Shadure. First of all,
the spell at right is amazing, and beyond that, just
it's just it's the sheer volume that this guy produces.
He is a gift that keeps on giving to the media.
Speaker 1 (20:07):
When are the headlines going to stop beat every day?
It's like, oh, hey, no, no, no, here's a story
about what he did to us the pre draft beating,
showing he really is immature. He doesn't get it. Like
I think we understand that the headlines by now. I
think that the personnel guys that are worried that we
think it's being made up about Shador Sanders. I think
we all kind of know everything by now.
Speaker 4 (20:27):
Yeah, you kind of get the how this is all
going to work, and just it's can he play or not?
You know, and if he is really really awesome, And
you know, I've said that a million times. You know,
Dion is probably my favorite player of all time. I
remember eighty nine. I remember, you know, Dean Sanders is
the most obnoxious player ever. He's going to break a
part of locker room. Well, you know, you hear Hall
(20:48):
of Fame talent. You're really good and it's quirky, it's fun,
it's look at him being you know, it's one of
the best most charismatic figures ever. And if Shadora Standers
becomes really really good, then this is all just start
of a uh you know, a side note here, and
we everyone puts up with it. So again, is this chance.
If he can play, everything will be just fine. But
you're right, if he can't, then they're gonna say that
(21:11):
that's the duty the fifth round pick. Then if he
can't play, then again you flush him and you just
go get another quarterback.
Speaker 3 (21:17):
Yeah. It's really just been a NonStop barrage of headlines
and everybody's got to have their piece and saying it
and that, and that's fine because coming out of the
draft at the end of the NFL being his monster
says it is Pete. I mean, you've got to have storyline. So,
you know, without arch Manning, I got to assume he
sticks around like all his family did before him. So
who do we get to pick apart next year? Oh gosh, yeah,
(21:40):
I mean it's I don't who's that guy? Not even
the class?
Speaker 4 (21:45):
I yeah, I am a believer. I kind of like
the Bill Parcell's line where he always had a problem
with players who didn't come out, like, look, if you're
you want to be an NFL player, go be an
NFL player. What are you doing? You know, why are
you playing with the college kids? If you want to
play in the NFL, go there. And it's a different
era than it was for Peyton and Eli and you know,
back then it was you know, it truly was the development.
(22:07):
They really loved the college life and the whole thing.
I kind of think it's a little different for arch
I I'm second guessing the whole Manning family only the
greatest quarterbacking family in existence. But I don't get kind
of why that they thought Texas and Steve Starkesian and
this offense is going to be best for him. But okay,
you know, I kind of think you get out of
(22:28):
there as fast as possible, especially if it looks like
you're gonna like what's coming up in the first or
second pick in the draft. If he's that good, he's
still not proven yet, by the way, so he's still
got to show that he can actually play at that
high level.
Speaker 1 (22:42):
Can the class be that good Pete Like, you know, well,
we hears all the twenty sixth classes protected me. But yeah,
Drew Rowler's getting a lot of pub Obviously he pulled
his name back and stayed for next year. Like, but
is the guys you see, the guys are gonna be
the top of the list for in twenty six for
the Heisman, top of the draft. Is it that much
better than this year?
Speaker 4 (23:00):
It's about the same. If Carson Beck is gonna be
good at Miami, I got the talent, it's all there.
But there that's a reality show into itself. And you're
right as Aller's pretty good. And obviously it's Archer busts
for a lot of places, so it's a bit. And
there's gonna be guy who rides off by Garrett Enufmeyer.
I don't know how much people know him or believe
(23:20):
in him, but he's certainly, you know, kind of one
of those guys who's got all the tools should be there.
So it'll be just something. But the problem is, look,
we again we're measuring this all by what just happened.
Where we did have Caleb Williams who's going to be good,
and Jadeen Daniels who's obviously amazing, and Bo Nicks who
was terrific, and Drake May and Michael Pennock's junior's good.
(23:41):
They go round to Jaj McCarthy. So you're not gonna
that's just such a blip in history to have a
quarterback class that's as good as the one of two
years ago. It's just so hard to find that again.
And I don't think next year's is going to be
that either.
Speaker 3 (23:55):
Pete taking the thirty thousand foot view, we watched the
fewer number of ends early entries to the NBA draft
process this year. Obviously college football had different animal where
you got to stay the three plus years. But now
that we're going to the courts to try to see
if we can stay there forever. Uh, and the COVID
years are behind us, Like, what do we anticipate if
(24:17):
the game continues to evolve this coming year?
Speaker 4 (24:21):
It's really hard and looks it we're so far past
the idea of these guys being college kids, and it's
it gets lost that, you know, why did the transfer
portal and where it did well? If anybody who has
a kid of high school age knows that yesterday May
Day that was that was national signing day for FEV
that that's when you commit, you know, and that's why
(24:41):
you have to commit. You have to get in there,
and that's what a lot of these players do. And
people forget that transfer is fine, but you still allegedly
have to sign up for classes and go to school
and supposedly to learn stuff. That's not really how it is.
So now it's it's the idea that you know, you
have Diego Pavilla, who's you know, forty four years old,
(25:02):
who's you know, still hanging around?
Speaker 3 (25:04):
You know? And I can't.
Speaker 4 (25:05):
I would do the Tommy Boy line of you know what,
there are people who go to college for seven years.
They're called doctors. But I don't know a why I
want to forgive me. But it's it's like at some point,
you know, yeah, you got to actually go get a job.
But if you're gonna get paid that much money, is
the nil money is kicking in for these old guys.
You are going to have more twenty five year old
(25:26):
grown men playing with the you know, the seventeen and
eighteen year old kids who are coming into this thing,
and it's just gonna feel weird.
Speaker 1 (25:33):
Ptutech College Footballnews dot Com with us right now, Jason Smith,
Mike Harmon, all right, so be if you're looking ahead
it next year, then okay, now we knew coming in, Hey,
Travis Hunter was going to be a stud all that
you know. Obviously, here we talk about a couple of
quarterbacks you mentioned, is Carson bec gonna be that good
arch manning coming out? If I said to you, hey,
who are the best players that you're talking top of
(25:53):
the draft? Give me one or two guys that you're
going to see their name, you have no doubt going
to hear their name called in the top five draft
next year.
Speaker 4 (26:01):
Caleb Downs, He's the one. And that's going to be
the argument where, uh, you want to get in on
early on this debate how valuable are safeties? I have
never understood it. I've had coaches and scouts over my
those these many years of like, why don't you value
safeties more? Because you get an elite one and all
(26:21):
of a sudden it changes your entire defense. I mean,
just you know, we have to go back aways even
now obviously, but obviously the classics, you know, the greatest
like ed reied De, Troy Polamalu's and Brian Dawkins and
you know the guys who could just completely change games.
Safeties are that they are the game wreckers and game changes.
And here is this guy, Caleb down to who is
(26:42):
who was the smartest guy from day one? He's just
at Alabama and he was starting for that defense and
last year he was the best, you know, football player
in Ohio. He was probably the best football player in
the country. But he just doesn't have the flashy stats
and you play safety. So the argument becomes, is he
like a number two overall pick? Do you spend that
(27:03):
on a safety when he's just that good? And that's
going to be the big argument coming out of next year.
Speaker 3 (27:10):
Uh pete, does Bill Belichick ever coach a game for
North Carolina?
Speaker 4 (27:16):
Okay, I'm just gonna say this, and you know we're
just we're just talking among us. You know, I just
don't know if yeah, when I'm that age, you know,
I'm I'm I'm not te Belichick on this. You know,
who cares? If I can you know, give a woman
like that and his book like him at his age,
(27:36):
good for him, But he is just like just like
Shador Sanders though, if you're good, all this is just
quirky fun So like yes, it's not a good look,
and he's the representative University of North Carolina all that,
but North Carolina schedule is not that bad there. That's
(27:57):
like a built in nine wins and even before you,
you know, really start pushing it here, even for a
team that's just going to be okay. Uh So, for
all the stuff we're talking about now in the off season,
way he gets on the field, way he gets that
team out there, and that team should be good enough
where it's probably gonna be one of the better teams
in recent North Carolina history, only because the schedule is
(28:20):
gonna work out on me.
Speaker 1 (28:22):
So what are you saying? Ten win team ten wins
for North Carolina.
Speaker 4 (28:25):
It's possible, and the ATC is not that great, it's
just miss it. I don't I don't have it right
in front of me, but I think they miss like
Clemson or so whoever matters, I think they miss. And
every other game is pretty pretty doable. So again, yeah, yeah,
it should be an eight or nine win team. It
should be good. And as we saw last year with SMU,
(28:48):
if you catch fire and the right schedule at the
right time, you can you could be in the mixture.
Big thing so so yes, everyone kind of also forgets
beyond all this. He's still an excellent football coach, and
let's see what he can do. It's the collegiate level
because he seems to really want to do this still.
Speaker 1 (29:03):
So he's on Twitter at Pete feu Tech. That is
at Pete feu Tech. Check out college Footballnews dot com. Again,
you're one stop shopping for everything college football. Diet is
always buddy, appreciate it, man, enjoy Yeah, the rest of
your weekend. We'll talk to you next week. Guys, there
it goes Pete feud Tech. Caleb Downs, Now, think about
(29:24):
that for a second. As great a players, Look, you've
heard about Caleb Downs. I've gotten to see him for
the last couple The guy's tremendous, right, he's smart, he
makes all the plays. He got to know where he
is at all times. Right, But he's a safety, number two,
number three pick in the draft, maybe number one pick
in the draft. Do you take a guy? Can you
take a safety? Position? That for the last you know,
twenty years, has always been yeah, good safeties are great,
(29:46):
but they're kind of get by positions. Right, You're you're
drafting the the edge rusher, you're drafting the shutdown corner,
you're drafting the big defensive tackle, like these are the
posent like safeties, Yeah, we'll give we'll find a guy
middle linebacker. Yeah, we'll find a smart guy. We'll find
a guy like safety's always been a ah, yeah, we'll
get a guy. We'll get a guy in the second round,
third round, a cap But like Caleb Downs, is he
(30:08):
going to be that Guy's he gonna be taking as
high as Travis Hunter next year. He's just that good.
I'm telling you it's fantastic. But that would really be
something to see his safety. A pure safey doesn't play
anywhere else, doesn't play quarterback, play wide receiver, doesn't do
anything else. A safety going as high as number two
overall in the draft, just go disrupt games and win
(30:29):
a Heisman.
Speaker 3 (30:30):
No, that's all you need to do. It's a very short,
very small benchmark to work against.
Speaker 1 (30:37):
The Jason Smith Stow with Mike Harmon things getting a
little late for the Golden State Warriors and their close
out game. It is the Rockets up by fourteen with
three and a half left to go. We'll have more
on this game coming up next as well as how
about sin's its Friday Night. We got a nice, great,
big bold prediction for the biggest football story of the week.
(31:01):
How about a hot take Friday night bol prediction for
the biggest football story of the week that's coming up
next Right here, Jason and Mike Fox Sports Radio with
a Whoop, whoop and a and a and a Mets
and a m e see and met so Anna Lonzo.
Speaker 2 (31:17):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific.
Speaker 1 (31:24):
Fox Sports Radio, The Jason Smith Show with my best
friend Mike Harmon. Well, looks like we're gonna see a
Game seven between the Rockets and the Warriors. Two minutes
left to go, Rockets lead at one twelve ninety nine,
still some time left, a little bit of time, but
getting real short for the Warriors. We'll have more in
this game coming up in a little bit less than
(31:45):
fifteen minutes. But thanks to Pete Futech for stopping by.
College Footballnews dot Com says, Yeah, the twenty twenty six
quarterback class, it's kind of about like this one. But wait,
everybody said all week, ah, the twenty twenty six class
is supposed to be so good. Yeah, maybe not so much.
Speaker 3 (32:03):
I like your half assed Bano cook there. You didn't
go full Bino, but you kind of invoked his memory
for me there. I appreciate you.
Speaker 1 (32:11):
It's a farce, Jason, listen to me. It's not that good.
I can't even name half of the guys they're talking about.
I don't know how good. But because it's Friday, we
throw this out there. Here's a big hot take for
college football for this year. Right. Obviously, the Bill Belichick
(32:31):
Jordan Hudson drama has been everywhere this week, and it
shows no signs of slowing down. I can see multiple stories,
you know. Beete Feutech said a few minutes ago that, yeah,
you know, listen, winning will cure everything. If North Carolina
wins ten games, everything will be fine. People are gonna
forget all of this. But I always kind of go
(32:52):
back to what my dad said to me a few
years ago, and we were gonna have plans for his
seventy fifth birthday, and I said, Dad, you're gonna be
seventy five. What do you want to do? And you
know it's coming up in a few months. He goes, uh,
gotta get there. First, I'm like, okay, I know that,
I know that, but let's you know, let's plan for
your seventy we can plan. I gotta get there, So
I'm like, Okay, you don't want to jinx anything till
(33:12):
you get right there. Okay, that's fine, And yeah, I
hear you that. You know, Hey, if North Carolina has
a big year, that'll save Bill Belichick. But gotta get
there first. And it is April and already there's all
kinds of questions about Belichick and Jordan Hudson and North
Carolina to the point where you saw TMZ had the
story this week that North Carolina is really concerned about
(33:35):
this situation with Bill Belichick and Jordan Hudson because here
it's bad publicity for North Carolina wherever they turn. And
the fact that Belichick is okay with the bad publicity
for North Carolina. He's all right with it. He is
all right with the fact that this whole thing has
been a train wreck and it's been nothing but embarrassing. Yeah,
he might not care. We talked about him last night.
(33:56):
He's in the IDGF part of his life and career.
He does not care, does not care if he cared
he would be very, very concerned about his public image
because he's gotta worry about recruits. He's got to worry
about players that worry about getting players to buy in.
These are not players. Oh, Bill Belichick, he's got to
and he's not. And North Carolina sees that, boy, is
he really looking out for us here at North Carolina?
(34:19):
I can see a couple of scenarios where he never
coaches a game for North Carolina and they're gonna run
out some interim head coach before the season begins. Right
if this thing gets out of control, this is like
I said, this, this Belichick Jordan Hudson thing is a
freight train right now. If he has to choose, if
(34:39):
North Carolina says, hey, we can't have this, and he's
basically got to choose North Carolina or her, what's Bill
Belichick gonna choose? If North Carolinia, you gotta make a
choice right now. You gotta choose. You gotta choose your
girlfriend or us. What's he gonna choose?
Speaker 3 (34:53):
He's going to be the greatest insertion, uh and appropriate
in power ever we released. Yes, David, you know we're
having this big press conference?
Speaker 4 (35:02):
What what?
Speaker 1 (35:03):
What's it all?
Speaker 3 (35:04):
About Oh just wait. Yeah, it's like, I mean, Jackie
check one of these boxes, like giving them a pole question.
Speaker 1 (35:10):
I mean, we've already seen the stories that that it's
not been fun at North Carolina. There's a lot of
people in and around the program. It's not been a
fun program to be around.
Speaker 4 (35:20):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (35:21):
North Carolina could also just say, you know what, this
has been a big mistake and it's not working. And
once you get close enough to the season to where
you know players aren't gonna back out and they're gonna
go play this year, they make a change. Admittedly it
would take a lot or a line in the sand
the Belichick crosses, but you can't say the chance is
close to zero, like there's this is the end of April.
(35:42):
You're talking May, June, July, almost all of August. This
is something that's gotten to be such a big deal
in a week a week for this and you know
with both of them, you know, Jordan Hudson, she wants
the fast lane. This is what she's Lady Macbeth the
entire way. She wants to There's no slowing down with
this Belichick freight train. Right, There's no slowing this down either.
(36:06):
North Carolina can ask him to make a decision, or
North Carolina could just say, you know what this is.
We told you last night. Bill Belichick is not the
same guy he was. This is not the same guy
from the last thirty five forty years in the NFL.
He is really in an IDGAF part of his life
and he's not the same guy. He's letting things go
that he would never let go before, but he's letting
(36:27):
him go now because again he's seventy three. He's the
did a twenty four year old every day whatever I don'tkay,
I'm wearing ripped T shirts and television interviews like I'm
in a rock bander, I'm twenty one years old, went
from to wear vision streetwear stuff. Next day, I'm really cool.
North Carolina could say this is just not what we thought.
We have to make a move and we know it stinks,
but we're gonna do it now so we can at
(36:48):
least go through this year. The new coaching staff can
get in and be in and make decisions and do
things and we don't lose recruits or a big recruiting
cycle like I can see that happening with Belichick at
North Carolina again. Chance is not zero, buddy.
Speaker 3 (37:01):
I was trying to find odds because I figured they
have you out there somewhere. One of the first headlines
spit back at me was from CBS Sports. I have
no idea who the writer is. I'm not gonna click
in and shame him or her quote why North Carolina
interviewing Bill Belichick is just a giant publicity stunt parenthetical
that got the desired results in rewind, I gotta imagine, yeah, you.
Speaker 1 (37:29):
Know, good publicity.
Speaker 3 (37:30):
Maybe you got a little uptick in applications, early notifications,
whatever the case may be. People backtracking now, and what's
the feeling around the facilities? Like that's the curiosity for me, Like,
what's the infrastructure folks working under Belichick? How are they
feeling about all of this? And what is his girlfriend's
(37:52):
true involvement to it?
Speaker 1 (37:53):
All?
Speaker 3 (37:54):
Right, because we get the headlines and obviously she's copied
on stuff, but that you might copy someone who's your
hand person, like we were talking about the other day.
So yeah, curiosity. These next couple of months just very
long couple of.
Speaker 1 (38:08):
Months again, long way until September. Long way chances are
zero exit out by to Fresco exit swalling Dome. Coming
up next, we break down the biggest story of the
night in the NBA. Keep it right here, Fox
