If you're listening to Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
Hello, Welcome in side hour to the Jason Smith Show
with my best friend Mike Harmon. Hobo Treat Day of DQ,
which means a dollar or more from every blizzard treat
is donated to your local member Hospital of Children Miracle
Network Hospitals. Blizzard treats are even sweeter when they support
kids you need it most DQ, because happy tastes good.

(00:47):
Did we find someone to go run to the local
DQ and you know, like orange whips all around orange
orange grange whip three orange whips because there's one not
too far away. Okay, but we just need a willing
participatly we did an intermined something. I'll run a d Q.

Speaker 3 (01:02):
No, that's it, d q, d q, d q d Q.
I just remember that with the orange Julius back in
the day.

Speaker 1 (01:10):
Oh yeah, Orange Julius. Yeah, I think you know. I've
been to the mall near my house a couple of
times and there is still an Orange Julius sweet. Yeah, yeah,
I got admit. I was never a big Orange Julius.
It's kind of like, you know, well, and you think
I would because you know, Syracuse orange. I mean it
was an Orange Julius guy.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
No, I think at some point you kind of it
becomes an avoidance of things orange for a bit.

Speaker 1 (01:33):
But d Q, you know, my my favorite part is
still like because I'm the guy that when you go
to like Benny Hanna and they do the whole act
in front of you and they you know that the
shrimp go flying stuff. But I still love when they
make you the the the concrete mixer is that what
it is, like a concrete mixer whatever whatever blizzard they
make they call it when when they make it, and

(01:54):
then and they turn it over to show you how
thick it is, and I'm like that. I just love that.
I just love that he turned over and so you yeah,
it's all good, go ahead, eat it all right. Yeah,
this is such a great promotion.

Speaker 3 (02:05):
Raising a bunch of money, great cause, great opportunity.

Speaker 1 (02:08):
I love the partnership. Uh, we made it. The first
night of the NFL season is upon us. We made it.
We made it to the first game. It's in the books.
You got to see some players who are actually going
to play this year a little bit, yeah true. Marian
Hampton had a carries It was a Will Disley play

(02:31):
a little bit. And Trey Lance had the night of
his career tonight.

Speaker 3 (02:35):
Well, if you wanted to judge Omrion Hampton by one carry,
he's going to be a bust.

Speaker 1 (02:39):
Yeah, that's it. Yeah, he's done for You know.

Speaker 3 (02:40):
When he when he went to stretch it out instead
of running north south. Yeah, yeah, like the goal line
was there for.

Speaker 1 (02:47):
You, buddy falling down draft boards. Where's his ADP?

Speaker 4 (02:52):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (02:52):
Now he's like thirty eight. I know that that carry
just did it for me. And it was a Hall
of Fame game. It was thirty two going into this game.
Now and now he's all forget and now he's like
third's ADP is like thirty eight, thirty nine. Yeah. But
you saw some guys, right, You saw some dudes like
Hassan Haskins has played in the NFL for a while,
like he was kind of fun, like all right, not
seeing everybody who was a backup Hendon Hooker. Once upon

(03:13):
a time he was supposed to be the guy taking
over for Jared Goff. Craig Reynolds had ten carries today
and usually you see him at the very end of
games when you go really gives him Montgomery or not
in why is this guy getting carries? Why is he
getting carries?

Speaker 4 (03:27):
Oh?

Speaker 3 (03:27):
I mean former running back prospect, Nahim Hines. Yeah, now
back as Miller Hines. Yeah, yeah, Miller time, Miller Heines, Miller.
Well it's Miller Hines time TJ. Clearly Miller Heins time TJ.

Speaker 1 (03:42):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (03:42):
So I mean, look, well you don't know a lot
of the principles, and people will start complaining if you
don't like it, don't watch. I mean that's really what
it always comes back to. But you got to see
Brent Mussberger on the sidelines and then he's in the booth.
You got to see you know, Chris collins Worth doing.

Speaker 1 (03:59):
It like it's it's good.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
Yeah, it's like a warm hug.

Speaker 1 (04:03):
It's back.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
Look.

Speaker 1 (04:04):
And we talked about the Lions being this and think
how crazy what a world we live in. It's a
super Bowl or bust. A year for the Lions, right,
life comes at you fast. This is Look, it's a
year for Detroit and look, being back there for the
last week in vacation, I can see the progression the
last three years of Hey, what a wonderful magic carpet ride.
This is We're good. We just we're just happy to

(04:24):
be here too. If we don't win the super Bowl
this year, there's gonna be changes. And there is gonna
be because you have so many guys that have to
get paid like this. All this young talent is all
coming up wanting new deals the same time, right, Aden
Hutchinson and they said, we want to give them a
new deal. Dude's gotta cut. No, we want to give
them a new deal. Jared Goff is up after this year.
I'm and Ross saying Brown is up after this year.
Jamiir Gibb is gonna want up top of the line,

(04:46):
NFL running back money when you like, all this young
talent is coming up. If they don't get to the
super Bowl this year, this is super it's gonna be
we have to rebuild and a lot of this talent's
gonna go other places. Because they can't afford it, and
they can't afford to keep all these guys. Can you
keep Sam Laporta too? You already know that can't keep
Jamison Williams. This is his last year. Dude, just rent,
don't buy because you know you're gone after this year.

(05:06):
They're not going to give you any money. This is
a really this is a what a world. It is
a Super Bowl or bust year for the Detroit Lines.
It is the last chance for this group to get
something done. That just shows you how fast windows open
end close in the NFL. Well, but go back a
couple of years ago.

Speaker 3 (05:22):
I've talked about it a lot on the program and
on the network, but those those new haven't heard it
right new to you when the Bengals lost to the
Rams in the Super Bowl and talking to fans grinning
from ear to ear, it's like you had that game?

Speaker 1 (05:36):
Why are you so happy?

Speaker 3 (05:37):
Yeah, it's like, yes, I get a vacation week in
Southern California.

Speaker 1 (05:43):
Super Bowl. I don't think that's what it is. I
think a lot of it is. If I don't look
at this as a positive, it's gonna ruin my life.
So potentially losing the Super Bowl every single day. So
I'm gonna spin it in my head where things are
actually okay when dude, I'm pretty far from okay, No,
it just seems no, No, I had no thousand yards Okay, Yeah,

(06:04):
there was not a pulp fiction moment.

Speaker 3 (06:06):
And Andie you thought you were gonna sneak that bike.
Come on, you really went to the extreme there. That
stuff right there, I'm not saying I'm just saying it's
a lot. It's a lot of progress. But there was
just a lot of happiness of Hey, we got Burrow,
Like and.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
If you think about if Burrow could have escaped that
sack for another half a second, he had a wide
open receiver for a touchdown, and the Bengals would have
won the.

Speaker 3 (06:32):
Maybe, wishing, wanting, hoping, all of those things. But it's
that same thing, like, and now we're running in place
right of all? Right, now you got the defensive guys,
you got the first part signed. Hendrickson's back, but he's
still not signed. Joe Burrow's still salty about a lot
of stuff. Your offensive line still stinks, and I don't
know how good your defense is gonna be. But other

(06:53):
than that, you know, how was the play kind of situation.
But you saw how quickly it went from Wow, rising team.
All right, maybe, but they're still chasing the Ravens and
the Steelers are always going to be a pain in
the ass for the Lions. And now you've got the
rest of the division is righted the ship, right, the Packers,
they don't have an obvious number one, But you got

(07:14):
a lot of guys, right, you got a lot of
wide receivers.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
You got a pretty good run game with drafted another
one this year in the first round.

Speaker 3 (07:20):
Right, and then you added you know, the Will Shepherd
kid from Colorado. Maybe he makes the rotation, maybe they
stay healthy. Either way, you've got a squad with Jordan
Love that you think is gonna be pretty good. Well,
people can't get over you know. They're tripping over themselves
to come up with superlatives for what Ben Johnson could be.
And the Bears won the off season, which we know

(07:42):
how that usually goes in the National Football League, if
you win the off season and not so fast. And
then Minnesota, even if they fall back, they won fourteen
games last year. Unless McCarthy absolutely comes in and throws
up on himself, they're still gonna be a double digit
win team. So all of a sudden, the rest of
the division has taken a huge step forward. So even

(08:04):
if you think you know you're paddling and ah, everything's calm, No,
you're like a duck on the water, you're flighting underneath
if we get the underwater kind of exposure going with
the camera. So yeah, for the Lions, a lot of expectation,
a lot of changes. We talk about the coordinator changes,
and if you had guys that were around the room,

(08:25):
the play calling is going to be difference, the sequencing,
the creativity, all of that's new. And Dan Campbell is
who he is. He's still gonna want to try to
run the ball down people's throats. He's still gonna try
to push it. Well, Montgomery was hurt for a chunk
of the back end of the year, and you got
some great numbers out of Gibbs. Is that sustainable for
a seventeen game run if Montgomery's not available game in,

(08:47):
game out once again, I think you got a potential
for a lot of change. To your point, I understand
the consternation and vexation of the good folks of Detroit.
Hopefully they can lean into schoobl a little bit more
here for at least another couple of weeks before they
start riding the lightning of Lions football.

Speaker 1 (09:04):
We're gonna go to a three man rotation school. You
okay with that? Now? The other side, I worked for C. C.
Sabathia all the favorite dann it. I am all in
on the Chargers this year. Okay, year one of the
harbought era in LA went better than I can't believe
it went as well as as it did, considering he's

(09:26):
coming in with his Michigan offense philosophy, where we're gonna
try to sledgehammer the ball with a couple of running
backs and minimize the quarterback. And it's like, dude, what
do you do. You're gonna go get running backs that
your brother didn't want anymore, and you're gonna you're gonna
plug him in and see but he see you think
he used that a lot at the dinner table in
the offseason. See what I can do with the guys
you can keep on the fields. Why don't you give

(09:47):
me lamar and we'll see how things go. Uh. But
not only to bring in a new system, a new
culture that the players all bought into. They make the playoff. Yes,
it was a horrendous playoff game for Justin Herbert, right,
but this was the peak of the season. Defensively for
the Texans. They picked him off four times. It was

(10:08):
just a bad game for Herbert, who had a pretty
good season. As time went on, Harbaugh realized, Okay, I
really need to rely on Justin Herbert more than I
wanted to, right, because he likes the quarterback to be
you know, hey, you're gonna play it. I'm gonna put
you in a great position to succeed, but I'm not
going to overuse you. But I think he realized time
went on, Okay, he's still my best player offensively, we
have to get things done. Lad McConkie turned into a

(10:30):
huge weapon. He's a top ten wide receiver. Quentin Johnston
turned into a guy that's not a bust now year
two for the Charges after the playoffs last year, and
he's brought in real dudes to play these positions now. Right, Yes,
Najie Harris got hurt with a firecracker incident, but hopefully
he's back for the start of the season. Doesn't matter.
Marion Hampton's someone that's come in. He can wind up

(10:50):
taking some of the a little bit bigger of the
lion's share, and maybe he doesn't give the job back
because he's such an electric guy. But bringing in and
making the changes from you year one to year two, saying, Okay,
we put our system in place, we put our culture
in place. Now it's time to build on what we
did last year. And you went to the playoffs last
year or the ross that people are saying, Wow, you
were in flux and kind of starting over. Now you've

(11:12):
made additions across the board. The defense is better. Offensively,
it's gonna offensively, it's gonna be light years away from
where it was last year because in theory, you'll be
able to run the football a little bit and you'll
be able to throw the football even more. This year,
year two of McConkey, another year of growth for Johnson
going into year three like, this is a team that
I am all in on them. I can see them

(11:33):
taking the AFC by storm. I can see them winning
the AFC West because at some point the Chiefs are
gonna have a year where hey, we're gonna be a
wildcard team where the Chiefs didn't get supposed to be
last year. The Chiefs didn't get that much better in
the offseason. Eventually it's going to happen. And the Chargers
have made these big moves in the offseason to bring

(11:53):
in dudes. Yeah, man, I can see the Chargers being
that team that that suddenly becomes a trendy Super Bowl pick. Again.
It's gonna be the best division in football, right, the
AFC West best because the bottom of the division is
the Raiders. And the Raiders are actually not gonna be bad. Look,
they got a really good head coach that they they
stopped the backsliding, they got a quarterback, they got a

(12:13):
great running back. The people are sleeping on. Yeah, the
basic losing for the Raiders is over all, four of
these teams are all really good. The Broncos are terrific,
right with the whole McLaurin news today, wanting a trade
there the teams go get Terry McLaurin. But this Chargers team,
this this culture and what Harball has been able to
build in a year and get everybody to buy in on.

(12:34):
Now year two with better players, watch out, man, I
am all in on the Chargers. Look at you.

Speaker 3 (12:39):
You said they had a good quarterback. Now you're throwing
flowers at Gino again like he was your own Geen.
The Raiders currently sixteen to one to twenty to one,
depending on where you're shopping to win. The AFC West
Chargers third in the division at plus three ten ish,
just behind the Broncos just at that plus two ninety

(12:59):
to plus three ten range, and then the Chiefs the
narrow favorite at minus one ten minus one twenty. Still
waiting to see what happens with Rashid Rice before it's done,
but they navigated the season without him. We'll see what
happens with the secondary tertiary guys, if you're worthy, came
on strong back end. Bo Nicks had himself a fantastic

(13:19):
run once he got acclimated the things. They made some additions,
adding another running back Harvey. That'll be a big part
for them there, and you'll love they re up Courtland Sutton,
who's shown a year ago you got a pretty good offense.
And what Sean Payton's got there. The thing with the Chargers, man,
look the hype machine. I'm gonna buy one of those

(13:40):
standing room only package. You see those thirty bucks a game. Yeah, no,
non transferable, but I mean you got the Steelers and
the Eagles coming in. It's gonna be a pretty raucous time.
Plus the Games of the West. But you're also talking
about a guy who got billboards in amongst all the
injury attorneys in Los Angeles. That's kind of a big deal.

Speaker 1 (13:58):
Oh it is. And you can break that code, Memani
and it's and it's the law firm of Larry the
late Larry H. Parker, Like that's every.

Speaker 3 (14:07):
Other book, like all of those guys, right, and uh,
sweet James and all those other guys. And then all
of a sudden there's a Jim Harbaugh on the mills. Aha,
superstar in your khaki pants. But yeah, and Trey Harris
they added to the receiving corps. Uh, it's unfortunate that
we did not get Mike Williams back for eight or
ten games as a deep threat he retires. But but

(14:28):
all of that, I mean, I still think before it's
all said and done, you watch old Keenan Allen stats
for days, come walking back to move to Pains and
give you that steady guy along with McConkey, who we
celebrated his exploits all last year.

Speaker 1 (14:43):
And you know, and he might be one of those
guys who oh it's like a fade of complete. But
I want to be fresh at the end of the year.
So maybe I'm not four, you know, week five, maybe
that's when you see him. So I mean, there's no
question people are going to be knocking on the door.
Plenty of twenty of squads could use a guy to
be that sit down receiver for them. No, this is

(15:05):
the division is going to be fantastic to watch. I
still think you had your shot at the King last
year and you didn't take it. And now Travis Kelsey
hasn't been you know, eating brought worst and drinking you know,
Belgian beers all summer like he did a year ago.

(17:41):
today was trade deadline day in Major League Baseball, and
every single team got a closer. Congratulations. It seems about right. Everybody.
You get a closer, You get a close. You can't
use my road, but you can have a closer. Who
are the big winners? Who are the big losers? What
does John Paul Morosi have to say about this? And
will be Network insider joins us now on the hotline

(18:02):
to break down what he saw today and John Paul
congratulations on closer day in Major League Baseball. All thirty
four players traded today were closers. I didn't think we'd
ever see something like that.

Speaker 4 (18:14):
Thirty four, by the way, is also the number of
points that were scored by the Chargers against the Lions,
but we'll get into that one later.

Speaker 1 (18:23):
Doctorally, pre season football, John Paul, don't trust right right?

Speaker 4 (18:28):
The preseason football is far down the list of topics
to discuss today. Actually, you'll forget me. Just before we
came on the air, there was a knock on my
door and it was the Twins beloved and cuddly TC Bear,
who was also traded. He was traded away today. He

(18:51):
is emblematic of the Twin Cities and he too has
been delt So you gave it, Doug, Yeah, it was
I gave. I gave TC a big hug. I told
him we're gonna hang out again. I met you first
the Metrodome long time ago. I always loved the Metrodome
more than most people did. But we're gonna have all
kinds of memories now. The Twins got great history and

(19:12):
they've got a bright future. But the president right now
is not so much fun. After making a lot of
trades they did well. To be honest with you, they
don't have a team.

Speaker 1 (19:21):
They traded away out half of their I don't think
they have enough guys to play the rest of the season.

Speaker 4 (19:28):
They can bring down there. There is a I believe
a Northern League team it's based out of Winnipeg, is
a loan some players. And then there's the Saint Paul
Saints that that's actually a Triple A team, no longer
an independent team that Kevin Mallar played four years ago,
but it is. It is a remarkable time. The Twins

(19:49):
have basically done trades with everybody except they did not
trade Joe Ryan, and that was that was the one
blockbuster of blockbusters they could have made a They did
not do that, but they traded just about everyone else,
including the beloved TC Bear.

Speaker 1 (20:06):
All Right, so we talked about the winners losers today.
I'll give you the two big winners today, and there's
a third winner. But these two above three big winners
trade deadline over the course of the past few days.

Speaker 2 (20:16):
You got it.

Speaker 1 (20:17):
The Mariners, the Padres, and the Mets.

Speaker 4 (20:22):
Good. I agree. And you know what, There's also this
little small market team, it's based out on the East
Coast called the New York Yankees, and they did pretty
well too. They traded for seven players. Seven that's almost
a third of their team. Now I realize that they
Aaron Judge on the injured list, they don't have Garrett Cole.

(20:46):
But now they've got I believe, by my count, I
think at least four different relievers who have their own
pyrotechnics and musical display when they enter the game, which
is usually a pretty good indication. The Mets have the
same thing. Have like dueling, dueling, game presentation entrances. Now
for the Mets, you've got Hell's bells, You've got you

(21:09):
still have the trumpets playing. Now the Mets, now the
Yankees as well, with the arrival of Comitito do'vall and
David Bednard at joining them with Devin Williams. They're they're
looking really good now. And they also got, by the way,
amid all the talk and the scrutiny on Anthony Bolpi,
getting Hoste Camago was a very important move too, because
he's actually a very solid defensive player. I think they

(21:33):
did exceptionally well too, I really do. I would have
liked to see the Yankees get a starting pitcher as well,
but by and large, I like their deadline in addition
to three teams that you mentioned, so the overall takeaway
is basically twofold number one best trade deadline I have
ever covered. I've been doing this for exactly twenty years.

(21:53):
The first first one I covered as a major league
writer was with the Seattle Post Intelligencer back in two
thousand and five and the Seattle Mariners. I can recite
the trades from memory. They traded Randy Winn to the
Giants for a package that included Jesse Foppert. Why I'm
a moros, I do Jesse Foppert, Jesse Fopper, just look

(22:16):
him up. He was traded Jesse Fopper. So, so that
was twenty years ago. This is the best trade deadline
I have ever covered in terms of just excitement, diversity
of moves you had, Buyer and buyer and seller and
seller and then buyer and seller. There was all kinds
of different combinations. It felt like an NBA trade deadline

(22:37):
on most because of the different combinations of elements there.
So that's number one best ever and it also conveyed
to me and this is really awesome news for a
lot of baseball fans that a lot of teams in
a lot of different markets believe that they can win
the World Series. Because you saw, by most measures in baseball,

(23:01):
depending on how you calculate this kind of thing, the
two smallest markets are Milwaukee and Cincinnati, and both of
them were buyers. In fact, Cincinnati they added Tobrian Hey,
they had Zachtel, they were adding multiple players, and the
Brewers made I thought, some pretty interesting moves with the
in terms of players in, players out. They traded Nestor Cortez,

(23:22):
brought in Shelby Miller. There's just a lot of really
interesting movement that I loved, and that cemented my idea
that this is as wide open as any postseason that
I've ever covered is going to be.

Speaker 3 (23:35):
That's the fun of all of a JP. We talked
about it a little bit when you joined us earlier.
This week, sure as the big Chip already making paying
dividends for the Mariners, looking resplendent in those blue jersey tops.

Speaker 1 (23:46):
Oh yeah on side cal Raley so solid there.

Speaker 3 (23:51):
I immediately went as we went down our list of
potential losers in all of this to the north side
of Chicago, where there were a lot of expectations that
at least one starting pitcher was going to walk through
those doors.

Speaker 1 (24:03):
Instead it's a utility man and another reliever.

Speaker 4 (24:07):
Yeah, I was a little bit underwhelmed. I thought that
they would do more. I thought the Red Sox would
do more. I thought the Tigers would do more. But
you're right. The Cubs in particular, there were a lot
of big time names that were linked to the Cubs again,
Iohannio Suadez was actually one of them. There was more

(24:27):
talk about what they could have done at third base.
I just feel like the Brewers have a little more
momentum now than the Cubs do, and the Brewers have
this youth on their side. I do think sometimes the
experience is a little bit overrated, especially in a situation

(24:49):
where you've got and again it's not like the Cubs
are this ancient team, but the Brewers have this really
good style they play with, and they brought in Mizerowski,
They've got chat Patrick, and now they've got also the experience,
a little bit of experience with Brandon Woodruff coming back in,
and then this really impressive bullpen that's missing a lot
of bats. So I think the Brewers are playing an

(25:12):
excellent brand of baseball, and the Cubs they just it's
a little bit more that I believe they should have done.
With respect to their rotation. Yeah, they've got six starters
that you consider Soroka to be a starter, But I
just don't know how the likes of Ben Brown and
Kate Horton again into the second half longer season, how

(25:33):
they're going to respond. You've seen a little bit of
inconsistency with Imanaga this season. I just I like the
Brewers a little bit better. And then you look at
a team like the Podreys now again in the National
League with a fund of momentum. That team is so
much fun. They Aj Proler basically made a trade at
every hour, it seemed this year, this day. And one

(25:57):
of them, of course, Mason Miller coming over from Oakland,
one of the best closers in the game, and he
actually kept Robert Suarez, and he kept Dylan Ceased brought
in for me to help address the catching situation. He
brought in Loreano, he brought an O'Hearn just a masterclass
of working the deadline, being clever with what assets he

(26:18):
had at the budget, and a j preller is not
afraid to make a trade and give up a top prospect,
same like David dembrows Gilber in Philadelphia. So I'm a
big believer. I really I like it when teams that
go forard are rewarded. And I believe that the National
League is going to be represented eventually in the World
Series by a team that was aggressive on this day

(26:39):
and in general this season, and that would include teams
like the Padres, Phillies, Mets. Yes, I made sure to
include the Mets there. Yeah, I know I held you
in suspense there, but they did. I thought the mess
did a very good job. Listen. They they paid and
I know that the New York fan of you, Jason,

(26:59):
was very excited that. Listen. They were not afraid to
overpay a little bit, especially in the Rogers deal that
was they paid a ton, yeah, to get in, but
you know how important it is, and they now have
an almost all new late inning setup crew in front
of Edwin Diaz, which is I think both very well

(27:20):
for their postseedon fortunes.

Speaker 1 (27:22):
John Paul Moros the MLB Network Insider with us here
the Jason Smith Shore with Mike Carmen. Now, I want
to bring up something that you had the big breaking
news on today. We saw that Carlos Correa going back
to the Houston Astros, and I'm sure everybody's saying, wait
a minute, they have a pretty good shot. No, no, no,
you said, Carlos Carea is okay with playing third base,
So I know everybody is happy the band is getting

(27:44):
back together in Houston. But John Paul, it sounds great,
but Carlos Correa hasn't really been that player now for
almost four years. I feel like, Oh, everybody's expecting Crea
to come back and we're going to turn the clock
back to twenty seventeen and that I don't think that's
going to happen. He's not that guy anymore.

Speaker 4 (28:03):
I think you're right that there is a little bit
of nostalgia here, which again is good. It's part of
the reason why and again not the same thing, but
why the Mariners are so excited about getting Suarez back.
It's that romance of bringing back the player that helped
you win before. So I understand that. But you're right,
is Ops, even from just last year to this year, Jason,

(28:25):
he was an All Star year ago, an OPS around
nine hundred. Now it's around seven hundred. And when you
take that Ops and you put it over at third base,
there were teams that had that level of production at
third base this season who were trying to upgrade on it.
And so I just I'm with you. The talent is

(28:46):
still there. He is not an old man by any
stretch of the imagination, but he's going to have to
I think kick it up a notch and he may
I think back to run to what Troy Cholwitsky did
over amount of time with the Jays when he was
traded there ten years ago, where he was sort of
towards the back end of his career, and yet he

(29:08):
found a way to summon that that talent and that
postseason dry for him. So I do think you'll get
a better version of Korea in Houston with a Pennant
race with a lot of excitement there. But I am
with you that I fully agree we have not seen
the best of him in a while, and he's gonna

(29:28):
have to reprove himself. And you know that those that
bat that he had in twenty seventeen or twenty nineteen
or twenty twenty one, they're not going to count right now.
There's nothing about those that bats that are going to
be event of much value. When he's in the batter's
box right now, is going to have to produce more,
and I, like you will sort of withhold judgment a

(29:51):
little bit before we see exactly what he's able to
bring on a consistent basis and stay durable, stay in
the lineup. He's been injured way too much much lately.
That has to change.

Speaker 1 (30:02):
He's on Twitter at John Morosi, that is at John
Morosey MLB Network Insider And and Hey, since I know
you're going to talk to Sternsey, your former college roommate,
pass along this message for me. Uh, great job today.
I'm looking forward to seeing sprot and McClain sometime in August. Uh,
who's out the Mets starting staff. So I just let him.

Speaker 4 (30:25):
He got Ooh.

Speaker 1 (30:26):
I think seeing how they like to bring up pictures,
I think they're gonna want to see him do it
a little bit longer, like Sprote McLain. I feel like
they're the most ready. But Tong is going to be Hey,
they want to see him do it maybe a little
bit longer. So I'm fully expecting to see him next year.

Speaker 4 (30:41):
I agree. I think he'll he'll keep pitching for the
Binghamton Rumble Ponies. I just wanted to find a reason
to mention the Binghamton Rumble Ponies.

Speaker 1 (30:49):
Of course, let's let's yeah.

Speaker 4 (30:52):
It's really the the ideal capstone of my trade deadline day.
We talked about the Binghamton Rumble Ponies on national radio,
and we've talked about and again. The only reason why,
and I'll bring it back to where we started, The
only reason why the Lions went down to a thirty
four to seven defeat tonight in Canton is that I

(31:14):
did not I did not preemptively on these airwaves give
you the final score two nights ago. Now now again
the preseason. I'm not going to bring out my a
game of predictions now because there's I got along, I
got It's a long season, but rest assured when it
comes time to week one. And I believe I heard

(31:36):
a report that they actually play seventeen regular season games
down the NFL, which I think is a new thing.
Maybe this year. I'm joking, but I'll make sure that
I get that prediction in before the first game that
actually counts.

Speaker 1 (31:49):
John Paul is always buddy appreciated, my friend. Week.

Speaker 4 (31:53):
We have too much fun. We have too much fun.

Speaker 1 (31:57):
I didn't give you that pick the other night. That's
why we got Okay, got it because I know we
actually we went back and forth and you're like, yeah,
we didn't do.

Speaker 3 (32:05):
A pick for Thursday. I'm like, we covered like ninety
teams in the fifteen minutes.

Speaker 1 (32:10):
He was Hendon Hooker's playing for you. It's okay, It's okay.

Speaker 2 (32:14):
You once thought he was gonna be the guy.

Speaker 1 (32:17):
It was a long time ago, man, it was a
long change. Speaking was so long ago. The Mets had
a bad bullpen. Now look at what it's done today.
Martin Weiss has more on that and the rest of
the day in the NLB Trade Deadline. With what's trending,
Let's get to some actual baseball being played today. Cale
Raley with his forty second home run of the year.

Speaker 7 (32:37):
Now, this is one of those records that has like
an asterisk but it's still pretty cool most in a
single season by a switch hitting catcher. Kyle Raley with
his forty second home run of the year of the
Mariners just scored their sixth run now six to nothing
over the Rangers in the bottom of the sixth inning.
And you also had au Henneo Suarez making his second

(32:58):
Mariner's debut as he's in the lineup today. Josh Naylor's
out there. A ton of people have been traded. Oh,
Kyle Ridley at the plate right now. The Braves won
today eleven to twelve to eleven and ten innings. The
Blue Jays traded earlier today for Shane Bieber. The Yankees
added three arms to their bullpen, Dovalve, David Bennar, and
Jake Byrd from the Rockies. The Red Sox got duffed

(33:19):
in May from the Dodgers. The Padres made five trades
in total before the deadline. JP Rosie said it, fella,
he made like Preler made a trade every hour.

Speaker 4 (33:28):
Well.

Speaker 7 (33:28):
They got first base from Ryan O'Hearn outfield of Ramon Loreano.
They also added Mason Miller, JP Series and Freddie for me.
The Dodgers acquired Alex call from the Nationals and Rock
Stewart from the Twins. Those same Twins trading Carlos Correa
to the Astros. Tigers traded for Kyle Finnegan and Charlie
Morton to add to their pitching staff the Texas Rangers,

(33:48):
while Merrill Kelly from the Diamondbacks and the Mets got
Cedric Mullins from the Orioles. Then Nicks and Ford mckill
Bridges have agreed in a four year, one hundred and
fifty million dollar contract extension and Washington Commanders why receiver
Terry McLaurin has asked the Commanders to trade him the
two sides Terry and the team unable to come to

(34:09):
terms on a contract extension. The Hall of Fame game
happened today thirty four to seven, the Chargers of the
winner in a game that does not matter one bit.
Trey Lance, though had his best game as a pro
as a guys outlined earlier today thirteen for twenty two
touchdowns on under twenty yards passing. Dj u Alungele finished
the game, Kyle Allen had two interceptions, and Hendon Hooker finished.

Speaker 1 (34:32):
The game for the Lions and mop up Dude.

Speaker 7 (34:33):
He saw a few guys who you'll see on you know,
the standard NFL Sunday, or at least we've seen in
the past.

Speaker 2 (34:39):
Craig Reynolds had a touchdown.

Speaker 7 (34:41):
Hassan Haskins saw him play more for Michigan than he
did for the Tennessee Titans, but still out there and
playing for his former head coach Jim Harbaugh.

Speaker 1 (34:50):
Back to you guys, Thanks a bunch of mart Now,
I'll tell you this, I see your Cal Rowley now
most home runs by a switch in and catching MLB history.
The record he broke was forty one, held by former
New York met Todd Hunley at ninety six ninety selig
at that finally that the met. He was the catcher
for like nine years and finally he broke through. He

(35:12):
had an incredible year. They moved in the left field
and he couldn't field at all, and it was awful.
At one point when he caught a fly ball, he
actually tipped his cap to the crowd because he was
such he was so bad in the outfield. But man
ninety six, ninety seven, six, yeah, forty one, y yeah, dad,
he was great that year. I mean we didn't we
didn't do it, but he was great, man, it was great.
It's all that matters. Thanks a bunch, Martin coming up next. Yes,

(35:36):
as you just heard Martin wise say, an all pro
wide receiver wants a trade. So I'll tell you why
I am okay trading him and who should trade for him.
That's next right here, Jason and Mike Fox.

Speaker 2 (35:48):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio.

Speaker 1 (35:58):
App, Fox's Radio, The Jason Smith Show with my best
friend Mike Harmon. We have more of the MLB trade
deadline coming up in about ten minutes. Thanks to John
Paul Morosi as always for stopping by telling us how
well the Mets did. But big NFL news today, a
congratulations we all made it NFL season. Yeah, it is

(36:18):
that time Hall of Fame game. How sweet it was
seeing those Chargers jerseys on the field tonight. All is great.

Speaker 3 (36:24):
Now, we're gonna rank our top five plays as made
by Trey Lance tonight.

Speaker 1 (36:29):
But outside of that, it's not often that an all
pro wide receiver request to be traded, but that's what
happened today we're Terry McLaurin of the Commanders made good
on his threat slash promise to request a trade. He
has done so. Jordan Schultz reporting this, Adam Schefter reporting this.
He wants a new contract. He saw guys like Garrett

(36:51):
Wilson get paid around thirty million dollars a year, and
mclaurin's coming off a great year. Clearly he is the
number one option in that offense. He wanted more money
and now it doesn't like he's gonna get it, and
so he wants a trade.

Speaker 4 (37:04):
Now.

Speaker 1 (37:05):
I know the Commanders have been getting all kinds of flak.
How do you not take care of this guy? He's
your best wide receiver. But first of all, I'm okay
if the Commanders trade him, because Jaden Daniels is that
kind of quarterback, right, there's a reason why he's a
top five quarterback in the NFL already. You can already
see that he makes everybody around him better. He's not

(37:26):
just a guy that can put up stats or if
you give him great weapons, he can do well. That's
most of the quarterbacks in the NFL, but there's very
few who no matter what they have around them, they're
gonna make them better. So yeah, I'm okay with not
paying a twenty nine year old wide receiver who's been
good but not great over the course of his career.
I'm okay with not paying that guy thirty million dollars

(37:48):
because in theory, you could say, all right, we can
get to the guy in here that can be just
as good. Right, we can get to the guy. Now
you're getting close to the season. You want somebody to
get on the same page with you, with your quarterback
and your team. So yeah, maybe this could have been
something you handled better, cause if you're gonna trade Terry McLaurin,
should have done it earlier where you can go out
and get somebody. But I'm okay with them trading him because, yeah,
if this is Jamar Chase, I get one. If this

(38:10):
is Cede Lamb, But come on, Terry Mclaurin's a guy
catches seventy five eighty passes a year, which is good.
He's been good, but he's not a twenty three year old,
twenty four year old budding star. He's gonna be thirty
and all of a sudden, I'm not gonna pay him
just because he's been through all the wars in Washington
with all these horrible quarterbacks. Yeah, I get that he
wants to get paid and he's a good receiver. But

(38:32):
for the Commanders, no, you are Jaden Daniels driven. He
will make the team better. You can let him go
and figure something else.

Speaker 3 (38:39):
Out final year of a three year, sixty eight million
dollar extension that he signed. To your point, last year,
his base numbers looked very similar to the year before
and the year before that, and the year the uptick
was obviously red zone. Right, he gets into double digit
touchdowns as that offense humes, and then you have to

(38:59):
decide how much does he help fuel everything else, drawing
extra attention, et cetera. Again, numbers didn't really change terribly
much along the way. So is that worth thirty million
dollars plus?

Speaker 1 (39:11):
Probably not.

Speaker 3 (39:11):
Now, on the eve of the season, I think this
becomes the you get a sit, right, you really want
to sit go ahead, But if you're looking at your
roster in Washington right now, you got Noah Brown, Deebo
Samuel and a wishing, wanting, hoping that Michael Gallup is
that guy that he wants. Upon a time was in

(39:32):
Dallas before he was out of football.

Speaker 1 (39:34):
Art monk. That's a lot, and that zach Ertz is
gonna stay hearthy Charlie Brown, Yeah, sure right.

Speaker 3 (39:40):
I mean you look at Brian Robinson and Austin Eckler
out of the batfield. Terry mcglaurin's I think gonna try
to leverage this his best by what I just said,
all these other guys like this is what you got,
and so how much you believe in old number five
to carry you.

Speaker 1 (39:56):
Now Here's but here's the thing is that they need
to make it trade and get a wide receiver back, right,
That's what they need to do, and they can and
the two teams they should look to deal him to, right,
Obviously the Steelers are gonna always be linked with a
wide receiver and all way went right, Sure, clearly that's
not gonna happen. The two teams that you trade for him,
and who I would call if I'm Washington, I call
the Bills, because the Bills have a horde of okay

(40:19):
but not great receivers. They could use a stud like McLaurin,
and the Broncos could use a stud to pair with
Courtland Sutton for Bonnickx's development. Again, it's an arms race
in the AFC West about continuing to add weapons because
it's gonna be the best division in football. Those are
the teams that should have the most interest in McLaurin
and who I would make sure I would call to say, Okay,

(40:41):
I gotta make sure I get a wide receiver back,
a wide receiver and a draft pick, whatever it is,
but I get somebody back and do it soon. Those
are the teams I call. Those are the teams that
I would call if I were to make this trade out.

Speaker 3 (40:51):
Now, here's the current odds, courtesy of DraftKings that he
stays a commander and one minus two fifty Patriots plus
four fifty Raiders plus five hundred Titans and Chargers. Chargers
might want to make a play, right We were talking
about that receiving corps and maybe you think we need

(41:11):
one more. You think we need one more, Let's go
get one more, Jet said thirteen to one. By the way,
exit al about a Fresca exit swollen dome. Jason Smith,
Mike Harmon coming up next, back into what made today
the best MLB trade deadline ever
