(00:32):
welcome in Side Hour too, the Jason Smith Show with
my best friend Mike Harmon. Yeah, Happy Kershaw Day. Yeah
it is I well, okay, it's okay. The White Sox
lead the Dodgers four to two in the third inning. Yeah,
it's not been a great night for Clayton Kershaw, who
entered the game three strikeouts away from the magical number
(00:54):
of three thousand. Again watch it because maybe it's gonna
happen one more time in your lifetime if Chris Sale
gets there. Outside of that, don't know what's gonna happen again.
But despite the fact that he has been getting knocked
all round Chavez Ravine, he does have one strikeout tonight,
so he is now two away from three thousand. The
(01:15):
biggest thing is is he going to be in the
game long enough to get there, because again, four runs
in the first three innings, and he has given up
a lot of hits, a lot of hard contact as well.
So I don't know. Maybe he's got another I think
at this point, if you're the Dodgers and he gets
you through five, you're saying, Okay, well that'll be it,
because it clearly is not his night so far. So
(01:37):
I don't know he's got a cup more innings for
those two strikeouts. Yeah, he's been up in the zone
a lot, and the velocity's not there. He's not missing bats.
To the White Sox lineup credit, it's the just put
the ball in play. When's the last time that has
been said, give the White Sox lineup credit. No, they've
been playing pretty well. They play hard for Venable, I
get this credit when someone said give the White Sox
(01:59):
lineup crowd. I mean, I don't know off, but I
get to talk about the White Sox World Series in
two thousands. That was two thousand and five World Serious, Jeff,
I think maybe he's part of a giant reunion getting
ready autograph fest, including our friend Paul kerko Kershaw. Thus
far through his three innings pitch he has already thrown
(02:20):
sixty three pitches. As we've talked about, location has not
been there, velocity not there, and clearly not missing bats.
No it is. It is definitively not Clayton Kershaw's night.
But again, two strikeouts away, probably still a couple more
innings he's gonna go. They're not gonna take him out
of the game unless something really goes wrong. He'll probably
(02:40):
get at least two more innings to try to get
to three thousands, So we'll continue to keep you updated
on that throughout the night. Well also, I mean, if
he's feeling good and look, he's not gonna take himself out.
So this is where Dave Roberts potentially has to insert
himself as the bad guy at some point, because, as
as we said, I mean, while they've given up seven hits,
not a lot of hard hit balls, get a couple
(03:03):
of deep deep drive one that was misplayed by the
right fielder, yeah, and has kind of gets also given
up a home run. He's given up some hard hit doubles,
a triple, to the to the to the califorido. I
mean made it. It was a stylish out. I mean
he Uh, it's not. It's not been a great night
for Kurt.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
Oh.
Speaker 1 (03:20):
I'm not trying to claim it is, but uh, to
this point, you've given up four runs and what you
don't want to do is bleed your your bullpen. Right,
this was a series that you were hoping to save them.
So again, we'll have more on this game as it
unfolds tonight. But uh, like we said a few minutes ago,
NBA free agency so far hasn't been as much about
(03:41):
the players that have changed teams as much as it's
about the effect of what these players are having, right
cause so far, and be honest, right, I know I'm
just because because I'm not I don't work for ESPN,
I don't work for the NBA. To work, I have
to say, oh my goodness, what a friends that you sell?
Sell that was the name of the show. I think
that sold when a lot of a jag sign. Okay, Yes,
(04:01):
it's a lot of things happen and it's a lot
of money. Is it really exciting? Yes, it's just just
by being in the NBA and being on a roster,
you're making a lot of money. This is a day. Honestly,
the first couple of days of NBA free agency are
days that NFL players should turn their phones off and
not go near it. No, you're right here, really, So
a guy who's been coming off the bench for the
(04:22):
last couple of years at the end of his rookie
contract just signed one hundred and twenty five million dollar extension.
I've been all probe the last three years and I
can't get fifteen million dollars a year. What, man, Look
at what we're doing with the two best pass rushers
in the game fighting with their squads. Turn your phone,
(04:43):
NFL start this way. You turn your phone off and say,
I'm not gonna watch these jags in the NBA get
paid all this kind of money. I mean, I think
it hit me really when JJ Reddick, my buddy, when
JJ Reddick got more money in free agency that year
than JJ Watt. Right, and this back when JJ Watt
before he was you know, hurt the end, Like when
JJ Watt was the pre eminent best defensive player in
(05:04):
the NFL and JJ Reddick was making many a year
than he was. He had a better jump shot. Just
turn first week of July, turn your phones off, don't go,
don't look at anything. Yeah, the guaranteed money. Well, I mean,
add the what happened with Damian Lillard that that does
not like everything's guaranteed. All right, Well, whenever we talk
about this in Major League Baseball, we talked with John
(05:25):
Paul Morosi about a lot of the young guys that
are still hungry trying to get that first big deal.
But once you get it, boy, it's a luxury that
you can't even define. So the Lakers today finally make
a splash, which is what we we talked. We talked
about this for a couple of days when we knew
that DeAndre Ayton was going to be let go. Lots
(05:46):
of problems in Portland, lots of problems with being on time,
problems with ice, I problems problems with and and and
and ice yes well actual actually yes, actually weather related
condition to me, I'm not gonna make it. I can't
make it to the game because it's too icy on
the road, correct, you know, reports of tantrums in the
(06:09):
locker room. They had to move on from him. But
DeAndre Ayton is a talented twenty six year old who
is who is a fourteen to ten guy who the
Lakers basically got for free. Okay, because hey, we're gonna
let you go two year deal with Los Angeles. This
is a good move for the Lakers. Now, is this
an over the top move? Is something that's gonna make them? No,
But it's a good move and it's a risk. He's
(06:31):
a lottery ticket. Are we gonna get a good DeAndre?
Is he gonna buy into our culture? Or is he
gonna be the guy that's laid all the time and
you know all the problems he has had throughout his career.
But this is where DeAndre Ayton gets to be a
bigger thing because I will tell you right now, the Lakers,
as every day goes on, are daring Lebron James to
(06:54):
ask for a trade. They are daring him with everything
they are doing and not doing to end esque for
a trade. The team gets sold. Okay, new beginning. Nope.
Genie Bus is staying on for a while. How long,
I don't know a while. That'll probably be a year
and then she'll go. But so you know, not a
lot is changing because it's the old way of doing
things right, the old way to do We don't have
money to spend, I'm staying on. Okay, what else is happening?
(07:18):
Not involved in free agency a lot, not involved in
going out and getting big players. We're gonna try to
figure things out. You opted in for fifty two million
dollars and so you know, that's a third of our
salary cap, which again you can't have Lebron James taking
up a thirty year salary cap. He wants to win.
He was watching the Lakers moves. It's not that the
Lakers don't want to do anything. It's the Lakers. Yes,
(07:39):
are they still hamstrung by Lebron opting in shore and
Lebron is still a top player in the league, but
they are itching to get to the post Lebron era.
They are itching to get to that. And the minute
Lebron the Lebron James says, yeah, trade me, they will
trade Lebron and they will pull some kind of crazy
ass trade and say, okay, now we're loaded up. We
got Luca with the guy we want to be paired
(08:01):
with him for the next five or seven years, and
now we're going. But they are purposely, hey, yeah, we're
bringing Deondre because you know, we're not gonna look like
we're tanking. We're not gonna look at what we're not
just gonna play this year with no expectational We can't
do that. I mean even the Lakers can't do that.
Lakers can't tank. But they're gonna say, hey, they're gonna,
you know, be the monopoly guy, you know, pulling his
pockets out. I have no money. This is only so
(08:21):
much we can do, you know. And and Lebron looks
at the roster and says, well, it's just like it
was last year, which, hey, during the regular season was nice,
but you see when you get to the playoffs, it
wasn't nearly enough. You lose in the first round, not
even in seven. You know, you need big changes. The
Lakers are not bringing you big changes. And because you
opted in, the Lakers are everything they do. They are
(08:41):
daring Lebron to ask for a trade. And if he
asked for a trade, they will absolutely accommodate him and
they will find a way to get But like I said,
he's gonna wind up finishing back in Cleveland. He's gonna
wind up fish and it could happen sooner if if
he says yes, that's the first team they will call,
because Cleveland's gonna say, yes, we need someone to take
the pressure off of our guys. We have a lot
of talent, but you saw the way we flamed out
(09:02):
after a big season where number one in the Eastern Conference. Yeah,
maybe Lebron will take the pressure off of them and
that's how it will go. So yes, I told and
for the and he'll he'll be able to spin it
and say, hey, I'm the king. I started, and I
started just a kid from Akron. I played in Cleveland,
I left, I went back, I left, I'm going back again.
So yeah, they will accommodate him and they will find
(09:23):
a way to make a trade with They will find
a way to make that happen. But they are absolutely
daring him to say it. They're not going to start
throwing him out there for a trade because they would
lose the optic, they would lose the argument, they would
lose the high ground of well trade. So he could
easily tell you no. So they're not going to do that.
But they are daring. That's why they are daring him
(09:43):
to ask for a trade. Anybody that makes that trade
in Cleveland should be fired, uh immediately because to make
these salaries match. And this is where the fifty two
million plus comes into effect. Is that any of the
would be contenders. They're looking at their going, well, we've
got a bunch of young guys, they're not making any money.
(10:03):
We'd have to give up three of those guys. This
a pick, this that the other. Does this make us better? Now?
It goes to that Houston theory, to a degree of
does this we need a guy to close things out?
And certainly Lebron we can. We can fight about whether
he's that guy or not at this point, but that's
fine Houston. They gave up a bunch of draft picks
(10:25):
and a guy they decided long long ago, someone we
talked about before the regular season ended and they even
got to the playoffs that they were probably gonna be
looking to get rid of Jalen Green's salary. Tada off.
He goes to Phoenix for now again potentially at Chip
that gets moved, but the Lebron contract and opting in
for that amount of money really precludes him from going
(10:47):
to a lot of places. His better move, if he
really wanted to get to a contender, was to swallow
his pride and just say who wants me and behind.
But before you do that, you have to have the
back door deal a begging so you don't look like
a well, I don't know, like the Knicks by all accounts.
Right now, I am back channeling the hell out of
this and saying, Okay, where can I get? But that's
(11:09):
the problem though, what team would want me? Can I
get to Cleveland? Can I get to the Knicks? Can
I get someplace else? Can I get to Doc Rivers?
I really want to play for Doc rev But look
a look at your Knicks. Take them for an example
of all right, do I want to go to the Knicks?
What do the Knicks have to give up to get him?
In terms of salary? You absolutely got the heart of
your squad. Yeah, but if But the thing is, they
(11:29):
have so many guys making so much money, it's not
gonna be That's why I like Giannis. But but the
Lakers aren't gonna just say, all right, we give up,
take take Lebron, and we're gonna take your trash that
adds up to fifty three million dollars. Take Karl Anthony
Towns and Oganno, Noobi, We'll take Karl Anthony Towns and
mcl bridge. You want that, something like that? You want
that as a Knicks it would be something like that.
(11:49):
They would say, okay, you're gonna give us Austin Reeves
as well. There would be something else. It would be
it's not gonna say, hey, we're gonna do that for
a year. Would be we'll take Lebron, We'll give you
a couple of Gus's money. Lakers punky on me, nobody
else now getting those guys and saying okay, because look,
who knows if Austin Reeves plays well alongside Luka Doncic. Also,
who knows if the Lakers are gonna have enough money
(12:09):
to sign him. He didn't opt in when they could
give him the maximum. Now because he wants two hundred
million dollars in a year, the Lakers are going to
have to move on from Austin Reeves. Can't put them.
They'll make their decision at some point. My point again
comes back to just who wants to change up their roster.
That's a contender. To bring him on at that rate
without giving up a lead lot of it would be
(12:31):
a huge deal because it's about going home, it's about
keeping It's great for him, but it's about keeping the
interest in them, because look, can he help a team
like Cleveland, Absolutely right, he can help take the pressure
off them and off of Donovan Mitchell and off of
some of their other stars, because clearly it was too
much for them in the spring this year because they
went out in the second round to a team they
should have beat. Look, everybody should have beat the Pacers,
but they didn't. So that's a that's a great fit.
(12:54):
That's something where hey, he can go in take the
pressure off the rest of the team and do it.
Isn't it more of an odd fit with the nick Yeah,
but I don't see him saying, hey, I want to
go someplace just to scratch that it. He wants to
play in Madison square guard and he's always wanted to.
He had a chance, But like, where can he where
can he spin? This is where I want to go
where I can finish, and finishing is going home to Cleveland,
(13:14):
and Cleveland clearly, hey, we need something because we know
we're not sixty three wins in the seaon sixty wins
in the beginning in the regular season. We're out in
the second rond. But you're gonna need something. But you
can also can see that in the deep Indiana had
a great year. Yeah, and they were a good team, right,
But I know you don't want to admit that as
a Knicks fan, but staying the same is not going
to do it. Okay, maybe we need a jettison. We
(13:35):
tied Jerome and some others a different energy. They're deep,
they can afford to do this and something. Maybe adding
a guy like Lebron who's not gonna play as many
minutes were relied upon as much. Now I can have
this year of being the wisen the older guy, and
Ben and I can have I can be comfortable with
a different role. And the Cavaliers, no, they need something.
They know you just said the quiet part. I can
be comfortable in a different role. You think you really
(13:57):
think Lebron James is that guy that's a wide receiver
from WR one to w R two. He ain't. He's
not comfortable staying in La having that but going back
home getting hey I'm where he can present it as hey,
I'm near the end. These guys are the future. I
want to try to get to one more finals because
he wants to, and that's a great landing spot for him.
People aren't stupid great landing spot telling you man, I
(14:19):
mean the Cavaliers could do a lot worse than than
than giving up, the giving up whatever they would to
get Lebron James, and I guarantee you, I guarantee that. Hey,
if there's if there's back channeling going on right now,
that's the first place they called been saying it for
months that Cleveland's going to be the place to go.
A couple other destination, sure, but where can I go?
Or it doesn't look like I'm just trying to hop
on for a ring. Yeah, I think he goes as
(14:39):
a desperation free agent. Next show with you, they are
daring Lebron to ask for a trade right now, absolutely
daring it exit out about a Fresco exit swollen down.

Speaker 1 (15:50):
Fox Sports Radio, The Jason Smith Show with my best
friend who's dancing in his underwear? Damn right, I am
dancing and is under You got at meet the punchline
high shirt? My goodness, uh dancing in his underwear. Because
the White Sox have a four to two lead over
the Dodgers as they bat in the top of the
fifth inning, and the White Sox have just had three
(16:13):
hard hit balls off of Clayton Kershaw, a line out
to left, line out to center, and a base hit.
There's action in the Dodgers' bullpen. Kershaw is up at
ninety pitches. I got a feeling this is gonna be
it for Kershaw. One strikeout tonight. Getting to three thousand
does not look like it's going to happen. Well, that
(16:33):
means we get to celebrate another Kershaw. I don't know
next time out. You can't get three strikeouts against the
White Sox. You should be cut. You're playing some good baseball.
Rip the jersey off him you you can't strike out
three against the White Sox. Come on, man, well to
be he's been throwing up meatballs and then get able
(16:54):
to swing through. Now he does get out of the
fifth inning with a strikeout. It's a curve in the
dirt that has swung at and missed for strike three.
So ninety one pitches for Clayton Kershaw, two strikeouts. He
is one away from three thousand. Maybe this changes things
and he stays in the game to see if you smith,
(17:18):
Maybe it happens. Getting that one strikeout might have been
for one more inning for Dave Roberts. Maybe there'll be
a fistfight between the two of them. Well, he gets
to come back out to the mound and then see
how that first batter or two go. Well, we'll see
joining us now that We'll keep you updated on that again.
End of the fifth inning. On top of the fifth
Dodgers coming to bat. Uh speaking of the Dodgers, big
time Dodger fan joining us right now on the hot line,
(17:40):
longtime NFL insider. Check him out of the thirty third team,
which is a very very very good football website and company.
H He's on Twitter at Jason Cole sixty two. He
is Jason Cole. What's happened to Jake Cole?
Speaker 2 (17:57):
But you first off for three thousand Knicks coach?
Speaker 1 (18:02):
What do you mean? What's my choice?
Speaker 2 (18:03):
Like?
Speaker 1 (18:03):
I can have either one.
Speaker 2 (18:08):
Just not want to know your where you stand on
this line?
Speaker 1 (18:12):
June June third, June third. I said Mike Brown, He's
the guy. He's the guy. And if people don't like
Mike Bred, who else do you want? There was nobody
else available. You have to go with who's available.
Speaker 2 (18:23):
You know, it's some years ago there were people available, No,
there weren't.
Speaker 1 (18:27):
They could couldn't get permission to talk to anybody. He
wanted somebody good other than him.
Speaker 2 (18:34):
Which comes back to the point of wide fire. The
guy had Oh.
Speaker 1 (18:39):
He had to move on from to He took them
as far as they could. He's an A to B guy.
To me, he's not too as. None of the players,
none of the players were upset. None of the players,
J Cole, none of the players were. It's my team.
I'm telling you. None of the players were upset that
he got fired. None of them were. They started to
tune him out the end of the season. I'm telling you.
(19:01):
They had to move on, now, did they did? They
GM hated him and the like, there's a lot going on.
Did they run the search, well, no, because Nicks. But
they needed to move on from TIBs to get to
somebody else because.
Speaker 2 (19:12):
I love the We just sneak that in. Did they
run the search, well, no because Nick, And then we
just like move on past that. Yeah, Like that's not
a central.
Speaker 1 (19:21):
Problem because I say, well, you know, hey, you know
the Jets could win eight or nine games this year
and finished second in the fcast, But you know Jets, right,
I mean that was basically the Elaine YadA YadA YadA, Yeah,
YadA YadA YadA. The best part of the night.
Speaker 2 (19:35):
Yeah, the worst owner between those two games.
Speaker 1 (19:38):
Oh oh oh, come on. At least the Knicks made
the conference finals this year.
Speaker 2 (19:44):
But they have made They did make a couple of
AFC championships with Woodrow.
Speaker 1 (19:50):
They did, they did. That was a long time ago. Man,
that was a long time ago. No one's got a
be No one's got a bigger playoff drought in sports
than than than the Jets do. So there you go.
Speaker 2 (20:02):
What is gone for him? He does? He really does.
Speaker 1 (20:05):
Maybe if maybe, if Darren Waller had come out of
retirement to play for US, we'd be able to y off.
But he did, and he's going to play for Miami.
Speaker 2 (20:13):
Because football is such an easy sport to come back
from after being away from it.
Speaker 1 (20:18):
I've heard that right back up.
Speaker 2 (20:22):
Oh yeah, no question, you know, like the physical part
of it, you know, going through paying again when you
haven't had to go through paying for Yeah, that's all.
It's really simple, not a problem at all.
Speaker 1 (20:33):
So so the obvious question there, J Cole is what
the hell are they doing in Miami?
Speaker 2 (20:40):
Well, I mean this is kind of they're hoping addition
by subtraction because you're getting rid of Ramsey and his
attitude Johnny Smith, John and Smith is actually more important
in this deal for the Steelers than Jalen Ramsey. Now
Ramsey makes all the headlines, but Johnny Smith is important
because he gives them a second tight end. But he
(21:02):
also you know, you have Rogers who loves to throw
the tight end, so you now have another a second
functional guy. I think that this is a really really
important move for the Steelers on the offensive side. And
they get Ramsey, who's who fits in and plays their
style well enough, and they figured that Tomlin can get
(21:23):
enough out of him. But I think a lot of
people missed the headline of who the most important guy
in this deal was for the Steelers as they try
to be more effective in what they're doing. And now
you get you know, he's back with Arthur Smith and
working again. Johnny Smith is working with Arthur Smith again,
So that that's really good from the Dolphins end, Like
(21:46):
man fit Patter is a good player, and I don't
understand what their philosophy is exactly.
Speaker 1 (21:53):
Last night I said, you see, that's you know what
the show.
Speaker 2 (21:58):
You said Mike Brown a month ago, you said this
last night. I know you're you're so far ahead of
the curve on everybody.
Speaker 1 (22:04):
That's the alternate name of the show. The name of
the show is being ahead of the curve. It is true.
You should listen to it.
Speaker 2 (22:14):
We are ahead of the let's curve your vidiasm on
this one.
Speaker 1 (22:18):
Hey, he's seventy eight years old today, pal, Yeah, he
Austin Safarian Jenkins completed the catch. Okay, completed the catch.
They also killed Carl complete the catch. Come on, you
see me juggling out of bounds. Okay, sorry, go ahead ahead.
Speaker 2 (22:40):
That was beautiful. I gotta give it to you. No,
I mean, I don't get like the Dolphins. You want
to play fast on offense, right, that's you know, it's
McDaniel style best. It's it's to his style best. You know,
with the wide receivers they have, they want to play
up temp I get get all that, right, Jonath Smith.
You can sort of sacrifice to tight end because you
(23:02):
can get away with a little lesser guy, more of
a move guy, with a way that they want to play.
That's fine, okay, But if you want to play that
kind of up tempo offense, don't you want to play
up tempo defense as well. Try to get as many
turnovers as you can to feed that offense. Right, Well,
(23:23):
like make a Fitzpatrick not exactly a turnover guys like
that's that's not his area of expertise. So I don't
know how this one really fits from that perspective. I
know that they Chris Greer likes making Fitzpatrick and that
that's great. He didn't really want to trade him in
(23:44):
the first place, but mean that they couldn't work out
ideal and they got you know, they got a good
haul for him the first time when they traded him.
I think this is a fair deal for both sides,
but I don't get it for the Dolphins. That's what
I That's the that's the part where I'm stuck on.
I like, how does Niker Fitzpatrick work combination of offensive
(24:06):
and defensive style?
Speaker 1 (24:09):
It doesn't. I feel like there's there's the Dolphins product
on the field and what the front office really wants
to do, and they're not in sync with each other.
Like they're not a better team that they went out
and got a younger, But feel like they're just dumping salary.
You don't want to pay anybody. We're going to be
starting over after this year. Maybe we trade to be
a new head coach, all the stuff. But I don't
(24:29):
know because because what they do just doesn't seem to
be in synct I just.
Speaker 2 (24:34):
Look, I still think they're playing this one out and
trying and they're trying to win, Okay, I just don't
know that. Like the even under a coach is diod
As Don Sherlove. I watched this for four years. The
first four years I covered, you know, the NFL was
nineteen ninety five, and I watched this under Don Shula,
(24:54):
and even Don Shiulda didn't get this. They had Dan Marino,
like the best tempo quarterback could possibly have, right, and
they played Ben but don't break with Tom all of
the DODDI is a defensive coordinator. It's like, that's not
what you do when you have Dan Marino. When Dan Marino,
(25:15):
You're like, you should be doing all out blitzes all
the time. You should you should be gambling and trying
to get turnovers all the time. You should be trying
to steal extra possessions all the time when you have Marino,
And it just never worked out. Like, surely you're a
really smart guy. I mean, you're one of the smart
guys in the history of football, and you couldn't figure
(25:35):
this out. But he didn't I mean. And so now
you go up to Mike Tomlin, who's really good coach's
very good coach, as you might say, and he's just
you know, I mean, or you know, I should say
Mike McDaniel in this case, a big coach. He just
went and got a guy who's had foign interceptions in
(25:57):
his career, uh or four interception tds. He's had one
interception of the left two years. Like this is it
just doesn't It just doesn't. It doesn't work good luck. Yeah,
the math is the math, and this one doesn't work
from that perspective unless they're saying we can turn and
make a Fitzpatrick loose and change the way he plays,
(26:22):
and that just doesn't seem to make sense.
Speaker 1 (26:24):
All Right, you're a prolific writer, a man of letters
and books. Will you take the Twitter battle about Trevor
Lawrence to be the subject and the basis for your
next one?
Speaker 2 (26:39):
Can never tell you, guys, the story of Trevor Lawrence
when he was at the combine? Did I tell that
one about? I remember? Okay, so well, when you talk
to really great athletes and you ask him about situations
and games, golfers of the best is the way that
(26:59):
their game. But football players basketball players like when you
go to Lebron and say, hey, can you tell us
about this you know, three minute stretch here in this
one play? Inevitably, you know, Peyton Manning is like this.
You ask him about a play and he will tell
you where all eleven guys were on defense, and I'll
tell you where all ten other guys for him were
(27:20):
on offense, and how the play broke down, like he
can give you a you know, a photographic memory breakdown.
Lebron can do the same thing, like, Okay, I saw
this guy cutting, but the guy was the defender had
shaded that direction, so I couldn't throw that back. So
that's why I decided to go with this pass. Every
(27:40):
really truly great athletes do that. So at the combine,
when Trevor Lawrence is coming in coming out out of
Clemson's does ask him And it happened more than once
all over this play when you threw an interception at Onnson,
(28:02):
can you go through what you were thinking, why did
you do it? What happened? And Trevor Lawrence said, yeah,
I don't really remember that play. Well, what old saying
is that we'll pull the blokes like remember this stuff
and because they were called, they go to that bank
(28:22):
of memory when they're playing the next game because they
studied it so much and remember so much of it
and they know exactly they got a snapshot in their
brain of how it played out before, how it might
be different now from from a look, and how they're
going to execute in the play. Trevor Lawrence is not
that kind of guy, at least not yet, and you
(28:45):
wonder if he will get there. And when you watch
him play, there's this just do you see the physical ability?
Speaker 1 (28:53):
You see?
Speaker 2 (28:54):
You know, ability to move, you ability to throw, He's
got all of that. You know, it's not anything that's measurable,
But what it is is in critical situations like he
just seems lost about what he's trying to do because
I just don't think that he processes it the same way.
(29:15):
He doesn't remember it. He doesn't and he's not comfortable
in these situations. The problem you have when you're that
team is, yeah, A, you got a lot invested in
him already. B. You can't just give him away and
give up because he might get it. He might pick
it up eventually, he might learn how to study and
(29:37):
get the stuff. Now, the odds are not good that
that's going to happen, because it hasn't happened yet. And
again it's not a matter of work ethic, but because
if you talk to everybody about Trevor larrencest he puts
in the work, you know, he puts something and you
have to study, he does all these kinds of things.
It just doesn't he just doesn't remember it. And I
(29:57):
think that that's what you see in critical moment for him,
and I'm I just have my doubts. But but I
think they're trapped. I think that they're trapped into having
to play this one out as long as they possibly came,
until it until the conclusion is absolutely made. That's that's
my opinion on Trevor Lawns.
Speaker 1 (30:17):
He's on Twitter at Jason Cole sixty two. That is
at Jason Cole sixty two, thirty thirteen Pro Football Hall
of Fame voter. I tell you that because that was
a fantastic take on Trevor Lawrence, my friend, So you
are you are now a Hall of Fame vote.
Speaker 2 (30:33):
Three weeks ago.
Speaker 1 (30:37):
Now, I tell you what I had to take beforehand.
That was that was brand new. That's good take it easy, buddy.
We'll talk to you next week. The greatness of j Cole.
Happy forth for Jason Cole.
Speaker 2 (30:48):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (30:48):
We're gonna find out what's trending right now from Martin Weiss.
As Clayton Kershaw is on the mound for the top
of the sixth inning. There is one out, first pitch,
ground out to first. He is one strikeout away from
three thousand. The Dodgers also trail four to two, and
he is nearing ninety five pitches, so we'll see how
(31:09):
it goes. M up.
Speaker 4 (31:10):
What are the details, Well, you've taken just about all
of the details except for the Dodgers do have Travino
lawing up in the in the bullpen right now, or
he was at least, so they are, you know, getting
ready to pull Kershaw. But it looks like Dave Roberts
wants him to get this strikeout here if he can.
But elsewhere in Major League Baseball, we have the top
(31:31):
of the seventh inning, the Royals and the Mariners one apiece.
Bottom of the seventh, the Giants have a three to
two lead over the Diamondbacks, and again the final game
going White Sox and Dodgers four to two. Top of
the sixth. Then and you just heard a Jason run
through a lot of it. But you have Kershl right
now with five and one third d He's pitched eight hits,
giving up four runs, all of them earned. He's walked one,
(31:53):
struck out two looking for that elusive third one for
three thousand. As he gives up a single, He's also
a given up a home run. Tonight elsewhere in Major
League Baseball, the starting lineups were announced show Hey Otani
and Aaron Judges, the two leading vote getters starting lines for.
Speaker 1 (32:08):
The All Star Game.
Speaker 4 (32:08):
Tigers lead the All Star American League with three starters
in the starting lineup. Basement second basement Glabor Torres and
outfielders Riley Green and Hobby Baiez are the three. The
Dodgers lead the National League with three as well. First
baseman Freddie Freeman and catcher Will Smith will join Otani
Otani just dhing he will not pitch. Home run leader
catcher Kyle Rowley from the Mariners is making his first
(32:31):
All Star Game and raised rookie shortstop Jacob Wilson the
only rookie to make it. He's the second rookie ever
at shortstop to start the game in the NBA, The
Knicks hired Micah Browns be their new head coach. The
Lakers expected to sign free agent center Joan dre Eight
into a two year deal. The Memphis Grizzlies say they'll
(32:51):
evaluate All star Jaron Jackson Junior's toe in twelve weeks
following turf toe surgery.
Speaker 2 (32:57):
Injury was reported yesterday.
Speaker 4 (32:59):
The Athletic Reports of the Warriors, Lakers, and Celtics reached
out to free agent guard Damian Lillard. He was now
a free agent after being waived by Milwaukee. The Hornets
science mentioned Dinwiddie to a one year deal. In Wimbledon,
second te Carlos Alcarez won of straight sets well. Twelfth
seeded American Francis Tiafo lost in four sets, and second
round play. Fifth seed American Taylor Fritz won in five sets,
(33:22):
and the Ladies draw top seed Arena Sabalankas onto the
third round. She's the only top five seat to advance
that far so far this year. Fifth seed Madison Keys
and Miami Osaka also run there also won their second
round matches. Max Mounsey looks like he's in a world
of pain right now. On the defensive side. Of things
right now. The count one to zero with two out
(33:43):
in the top of the sixth ending Clayton Kershaw still
one strikeout away from three thousand, as they take a
look at Max Munsey's left knee on as he's down
in the infield.
Speaker 1 (33:54):
Back to you guys, thanks a bunch, Martin. So he
gives up a double to start the top of the
sixth inning, Kershaw or for the second bat in the
top of the sinning, Kershaw's beginning hit incredibly hard since
the top of the first inning gives up a double
and on a stolen base attempt, Max Munsey makes the
(34:16):
tag out. It's a throwout to third. Will Smith gets
a good throw down to Munseie, but an awkward tag
in which the runner slides into Muncie. He goes down
is in a world of pain. He has been helped
off the field. He did not leave the field under
his own power. He had a person on either side
of him. Didn't look like he could put a lot
(34:37):
of pressure on his left leg. They looked at his
knee again. This coul This goes from Hey, Clayton Kershaw,
three thousand. Hey, we got to win this game. Now
you're worried about Max Munsey and what his status might
be after that caught stealing attempt at third base. Yeah,
to this point there had been no replay on the telecast.
It's starting to make its way through socials. The hard
(35:00):
slide into the bag and just an unfortunate collide. Yeah,
I mean OCAs he went to slap the tag and
key k a her Nana is coming out to play
third base now. But see, you know, only seeing it once,
it looked like it would the throwers a little off
the base, Mike throw inside. Michael Taylor tries, you know,
as a as an aggressive slide into third and maybe
Monsey gets run into. Maybe Monsey trips. It's hard to
(35:23):
tell because again we haven't seen the replay yet. Kershaw
is taking some uh uh warm up pitches right now,
is to get back in the in the swing of things.
With two outs here in the top of the sixth inning, again,
White Sox lead the Dodgers four to two. So we'll
keep you updated on Kershaw and Max Munts, who again
left the field had to be helped off the field,
could not put pressure on his left leg after that
(35:45):
stolen base attempt. Again, Michael Taylor thrown out on the play.
But uh, this is where we sit right now, so
we'll have more on this coming up next. Maybe Clayton
Kershaw gets that elusive K. But straight ahead, boy, a
huge NBA retire ron fake account got some big time
people today on social media. Woo. That's next Jason and
(36:06):
Mike Fox. Be sure to catch live editions of The
Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern,
seven pm Pacific, Fox Sports Radio The Jason Smith Show
with my best friend Mike Harmon. We will get to
that fake retirement story that got a lot of people
(36:26):
today coming up in a second. That's a good one.
We just saw absolute history in Major League Baseball. Clayton
Kershaw gets strikeout number three thousand, the final out of
the sixth inning. Strikes out Vinnie Capra, looking at quintessential.
Here comes outside part of the plate, you know, the
curve that he's thrown his entire career. Here comes and
(36:48):
right on the outside part of the plate, strikeout, looking
Dave Roberts's out of the dugout. There was about a
five or six minute pause in the game where Kershaw
got congratulations from his teammates. He waved to the crowd,
the twentieth person in Major League Baseball history to get
to three thousand strikeouts. We sow it just moments ago
and exactly the way Kershaw would have wanted it, as
(37:10):
in it ended an inning, So it was a natural
pause in the game to have the celebration, the doffing
of the cap whatever. It wasn't a hey, i've got
a runner on second that I still need to contend with. Everybody,
sit down and shut up. I want to continue going
to work. No, it was his one hundredth pitch of
the night. Dave Roberts, the number of cutaways they did,
(37:30):
they might as well have done a picture and picture
for that half of the inning, because it became the
I don't really want to go get him. I want
to give him every opportunity to get this milestone because
he didn't want to be I mean, we've seen Dave
so many times with a young pitcher and some of
the veterans where it's like, damnit, he's got a no hitter,
but he's at eighty five eighty seven pitches. We want
(37:51):
to win this game, and that's where you're kind of
at with Kershaw.
Speaker 2 (37:54):
Here.
Speaker 1 (37:54):
You get the big throwout. We'll keep an eye on Muncie,
but you got that big throwout an attempted steeler for
the second out. So it's like, all right, can we
get him through this inning? Give him one more shot
and keep the lead where it is for the White Sox,
and Kershaw gets capra journeying in hitting a buck twenty eight.
This will be his big moment because forever he'll be
(38:15):
able to sign photos as the guy that was the
three thousandth victim. Yeah, Clayton Kershaw, Can I see that
look on you disagreeing with the call on the outside
part of the play. Can we sign that for me?
Speaker 3 (38:25):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (38:25):
Sure, no problem, No, no, no, it's just gonna be
the Kershaw fist bumped. That'll be fifty dollars. I mean,
just think about it, like like he gets it. Obviously.
You want it to be in a game where the
Dodgers wanted to be a game where they're winning, where
it's you know, they're in control of this, but they're
losing four two to the White Sox. But individually for
Kershaw again, his last batter of the game, pitch number
(38:47):
one hundred on his signature pitch to end the inning,
I mean all the poetry, that's exactly how you would
want to line it up. The only way is better
is if, hey, it's the final out of the game,
the ninth inning, the Dodgers win. It's a perfect game.
And when it won nothing all right, you made Billy
Chapel alone. But you get most of it here. Hey,
John c Riley could have caught that. And then Skull
was on the call of that one day. And oh,
(39:08):
by the way, Hey, I gotta say, this phenomenal job
of Will Smith framing that pitch was dicey. That was
not something that was Hey, you could see it right away.
This was on the outside corner, right on the edge
of the box, and it was a called strike three.
I want to go back to var uh see you
know was it on you know if we overlay it? No,
(39:29):
uh all in you knew me, maybe you'd have a
little bit of the zone and that's where it was.
I gotta think really frustrating for Kershaw with his placement
of pitches all day long. Of you were probably going
to get a generous side to side if you were
working it. He was leaving everything over the middle to
get hit. It hit hard like the old rule of thumb, though,
(39:50):
hit them where they ain't, which the White Sox, while
they do have the four to two lead based on
the balls put into play, could have been a lot worse.
So the fact that you're still within striking distance right now,
one out runners on first and third year bottom of six.
But you know you also want to do it at home,
and you start looking at the schedule ahead. I guess
(40:12):
you would add another start against the Brewers at home
before they hit the next road trip. But you also
don't want it hanging in the balance, right you want
to do Look everybody's there tonight. Look his family has
had they keep cutting away to all the luminaries. That's
probably why Dave Roberts put him back out there for
the six. It's like, look everybody's here. Oh he doesn't
want to be that guy, and it's not seven to
two sixth okay. And we've seen them punt many games,
(40:35):
Not that you want to do that, not that Kershaw
would ever want them to do that, but how many
how many opener games have we seen? Hasn't Key k
Hernandez pitched in like eight games ready this year or
something like that? Absolute history Clayton Kershaw strikeout number three thousand.
The Dodgers again trail the White Sox four to two,
but three k for Kershaw. Coming up next, we'll have
(40:57):
more on this breaking story. Plus, hey, there's actually somebody
who had a better knight than Kershaw. Believe it. Whoa
