we'll get a Big Bowl prediction coming up in a
couple of seconds for this year in the NFL, but
big NBA headline today the Atlanta Hawks fired head coach
Nate McMillan, clearing the way for an immediate search that
is going to start with Quinn Snyder, who was the
leading candidate to take over for Nate McMillan. Now, I

(01:06):
don't know if it's just you Mike. But when I
saw this story, say, I thought to myself, I feel
like Nate McMillan has been coaching since the nineteen seventies,
like he's been coaching different teams for so long he's
been a head coach. I mean, this is over twenty
years he's been a head coach in the NBA off
and on, he was an assistant head coach of the Sonics,
then he jumped to the Blazers, then he jumped to

(01:27):
the Pacers, and he jumped to the Hawks. Like he's
feel like he's been coaching forever. But it makes me
cry because I remember him playing, remember right, I remember
him being drafted, playing his entire career, and then it
still seems like he's been coaching forever. Not not that
I can, not that I can one up you on it,

(01:48):
but I vividly remember his picture in Sports Illustrated going
into the senior year of his season or North Carolina State,
where I forget what the theme was, but it was
is him like balancing, like spinning a bowling pin on
one finger and him on tom on a bunch of
bowling pins, like that was the picture they had of him.
For whatever reason, I don't know why, but I remember that,

(02:10):
like I remember reading that article of boy Nate Nate
McMillan's gonna be really good as a senior in college. Yeah,
that's where we're at, Like a quarter Coachrey, I feel
I took it. So look, I feel like they when
I turned forty. I turned forty. I'm like, well, I
feel okay, turned forty. But wow, four decades, man, that's
a long time. Like, wow, Nate McMillan, this has been

(02:32):
a long time. Yeah. And of course, you know, the
Knicks are gonna hire him to replace Tibodau when it
all works out, when it all finished it, So that's
gonna happen. There'll be fine. Yeah, I just go through
the process. Right they're they're one game under five hundred
of twenty nine and thirty right now. Uh, and they're
the eighth seed. M and he got fire. Yeah, you know.

(02:54):
And that's the thing is that when coaches get fine,
this is this is this is a new thing with
the NBA that this might be one of the last
times we see it. Now. I get that the Hawks
were at a certain level a couple of years ago.
We were ascending. We had Trey Young, we should be
better than where we are right now. So I understand, Hey,
something's up. We're not we're not getting better. We're kind

(03:15):
of treading water. So we have to make a change.
So I get that part of it. But in the end,
it's really gonna in the end, it's gonna turn out
being just about the playoffs because the regular season is
getting so whatever. You know, like, No One, you don't
need to finish. Oh well, will you finish at the
bottom of the Western Conference the last couple of years. Well,
you're in the playoffs. You're in the play in tournament.
Because you're in the play and you're in the playoffs. Right,

(03:35):
that's the thing. Now you're in the play in tournament.
You're in the playoffs. Right. No one talks about seven
to ten is the play and no no getting in
the playoffs. And seven through ten is in the playoffs.
So that's in now. No one talks about how, hey
we were third last year in the East, now we're six.
We were fifth last year and now we're seventh. We're
really not trending upward. No, we're making the playoffs in

(03:56):
a largely regular season without consequence. So okay, So it's
really going to be in the future about Okay, how
are we doing in the playoffs? What do we do?
How do we do are we able to go from
one playoff one year? How are we in the playoffs
the next year? Did we make a move, we make
an adjustment? Are we spending our wheels? That's gonna be
how you're going to see coaches evaluated because this whole hey,

(04:19):
regular season, Hey we're here, we're not. Nobody cares about that,
and nobody cares where you finished in the regular saying hey,
it's great to finish first, it's great to finish second's
great to have the home the home games all the
way through. It's great to be that good. When you're
that good, you know you're an NBA title contender. But
by and large, regular season is yeah, it really isn't
matter that much. We're talking about Lebron just getting into
the playoffs and then okay, you just get it. What

(04:39):
does it matter where you get in. You get in,
you win a couple of games, and now you're in
a series. It doesn't matter what happened. You just have
to get in. It's the evaluating coaches and players by
the regular season now is like we can't. There's no
reason to do that anymore because it's it's it doesn't
really matter like it used to. Well, I like that
you roped in the Lebron comments and where he's at
in the continuum, because that was one of the sound

(05:01):
bites that is going to feed NBA, Twitter, social media,
sports talk radio, and television for the next couple of months. Right,
the most important twenty three games regular season games of
his career talking about if he doesn't go to the playoffs.
Now that's one of the giant stamps at the end
of his run. Yeah, you got the record, and Capp

(05:23):
was there and he gave you the basketball and all
that stuff. You had your moments in the All Star Game.
You had guildes Alexander going, well, he played no defense
all game and then he comes to try to block
my dunk and he hurts his finger in the process. Right,
so you've got that. You didn't you didn't pretend to
play a liquid defense and then you got hurt deciding

(05:46):
on that play. So bad job by you. But McMillan
twenty seven and eleven when he took over, they would
go to the conference finals, then losing the first round
after a forty three and thirty nine season. Now you're
at five hundred, and it really comes down to how
much just training young hate him? Right, I mean, that's
the subplot to all of it, right, is you kept

(06:06):
seeing the word friction for the last couple of months,
even coming into the year, like they don't they have
this uh, you know, go along, get along kind of thing,
But underneath the surface, there's some some hostility, some resentment,
some whatever about style and that they don't necessarily get along.
What's real, what's imagine, what gets amplified in our media

(06:29):
space is remains to be seen, but what it does is,
all right, you're a five hundred team riding out the
rest of this string. You don't expect to move up much,
but you're in that nice, meaty range where you, as
you say, gonna make the playoffs. Men, look at the
Western Conference with Lebron and company. It's like you got
two teams in Texas that are just awful and so

(06:51):
far beyond anybody else, and now you just have to
climb the rungs to try to, you know, make that
little push fourteen and nine for the rest of the
season to get to five hundred. But in Atlanta. They
I don't know if they're looking for a first mover
advantage in the coaching cycle or just to spark. Maybe
it frees up young and the offense to to move

(07:14):
a little differently, whatever the case may be. I was
a little um confused when you are in the playoffs.
But then I paused and said, again, everybody makes the
playoffs so much. What's the difference. Yeah, look that's how
it works, right. Uh So yeah, here we go. So
here go the Hawks. They fire Nate McMillan. Likely Quinn
Snyder is on the way m head coach. And speaking

(07:38):
of the Knicks, you know, GM Landry Fields said he's
gonna start pursuing his new head coach right away. And
I guarantee you the average NBA fan is going Landry
Fields doesn't still played for the Knicks. He's not like
on the Knicks bench. Like he's not like the tenth
eleventh guy. Not really, he's not in the knis anymore. Oh,
he hasn't played since like twenty fifteen. I thought Landry
Fields is still in the Knicks. Okay, out of Long Beach, California,

(07:59):
Pride of Long Beach. He's only thirty four. Yeah, I
know thirty four, he got hurt. Yeah, it was a
hip injury, I think is what happened to him. He
had to retire when he was really young. But now
he's a GM at thirty four. It's awesome, old and unaccomplished.
How about a Big Bowl prediction for the NFL for
next season for a Yeah, we're jumping back to the NFL. Yeah,

(08:21):
it's had nothing to do with future Hall of Famer
Derek Carr. No, well, he is a future hall Derek
Carr is a future Hall of Fame legie, Well, he
could be that beat. I can't wait to see what
the Post does with that. You know, I wanted to
get this in before we got to people changing teams
in the beginning of free agency because I want to

(08:42):
get this in because as we've gone through last year,
remember it this time I told you, hey, my surprise
team next year, I'm gonna give you the Eagles are
going to go to the Super Bowl and Jalen Hurts
is gonna win MVP. Two predictions that boy, I feel
I'm putting that on my Mount Rushmore this year because
the Eagles got to the Super Bowl and Jalen Hurts
almost won the MVP R. He didn't get a lot

(09:03):
of first place once, but he finished second. Okay, So
Jalen Hurts finished where he was like eighteen twenty to
one odds because he's a quarterback and it's like the
you know, he was like the fifteenth or seventeenth highest thoughts.
So I feel pretty good about that. So if you're
asking me, okay, hey Jason, you got you got a
MVP super Bowl prediction for next year? I do you

(09:25):
ready for this? I'm gonna get you just like who's
the Jalen Hurts Bears? Who's the Bears? Will trade? Justin fields? Uh?
I hate you and everything you stay. You hate it
because I put it out in the universe and now
it's gonna happen. And now it just started at ground swell.
I just turned in one of our breaks a clip
from from Colin Cowherd jumping on that. So all of

(09:47):
a sudden, you know only it's got this ground swell support.
I still say it makes no sense, but that's fine.
A month and a half ago, I told you watch
that the pressure of picking number one, you're just not
taking Bryce Young. I'm telling it before the Bears are
even finishing first, but when it goes going to the
last week, because there's hatred of me that you just
haven't been able to express properly. So I decided to

(10:10):
take it out through Justin Fields. I need to text
you the picture of Justin Fields as a jet again.
I need again? Yeah, yeah, yeah, you need that again.
I think spent a couple of hours. Yeah, go ahead.
So who's my Eagles Jalen Hurts for twenty twenty three?
Who can win the MVP and take his team to
the Super Bowl? What's what's what's suthing? Helen and the Bills,
Zach Wilson and the Jets, Derek Carring. Obviously Derek Carr.

(10:32):
The Jets would clearly be on that list. Future Pro
Football Hall of Famer first ballot, Derek Carr. But I'm
gonna give you like I gave you the Eagles last
year and Jalen Hurts, I'm going to give you the
Jaguars and Trevor Lawrence the Jaguars to the Super Bowl,
Trevor Lawrence to win MVP. All right. We saw them

(10:54):
take huge strides the second half of the season. They
got into the playoffs, they pull a miracle comeback to
win they probably with a little more seasoning, would have
beaten the Chiefs in that game. The Jet we are
getting ready for the dominant era of the Jaguars in
the AFC South, just like I just like I said, Hey,

(11:15):
Bengals fans, don't worry about it. The era of good
feeling is here. But you guys are gonna run that
division for the next ten years and be a yearly
Super Bowl threat. The same thing is happening right now
for the Jaguars. It is the era of good feeling.
They're gonna run that division for the next ten years.
Trevor Lawrence took huge strides to hear that players talk
about the leadership that he was able to express this

(11:36):
year getting it done on the field. The Jaguars play
in a really crappy division. Trevor Lawrence is ascending. Watch
they'll get Calvin Ridley next year. Remember he's gonna come back.
He's already applied for reinstatement and he's probably gonna He
sat out of year. I can't believe he's not. I mean,
he stayed out, you know, nothing else happened. I can't

(11:56):
but he's not gonna get reinstated. But Lawrence has that
factor MVP wise, he's got the it factor. Only Joe
Burrow really has the same kind of it factor of
quarterbacks that are that are on the ascension. Because lak
Patrick Mahomes has gotten there, He's won a couple of
Super Bowls. It's only Burrow can compete with him. But
so from that, yeah, people would love to give the
MVP to Trevor Lawrence here. He is a generational prospect

(12:19):
we told you about. And the Jaguars as a team
here they come. Watch out Jaguars the Super Bowl. Trevor
Lawrence MVP. There's my Jalen Hurts Eagles Bowl prediction for
twenty three. Yeah, I like that. I'm bringing an army
of shaman and medicine people and I'm going to the Chargers.

(12:39):
Oh look at it, you're falling for the Chargers. I'm
falling for you know what I haven't though I haven't historically,
Now I will. Now I will. For your odds as
we go, You've got twenty eight to one on your Jaguars,
fifteen to one on Trevor Lawrence. I'm going twenty two
to one for the Chargers and eleven to one on

(13:01):
Justin Herbert. And again They've got a lot of moving parts.
Receiving core is gonna look a lot different. Uh, you
do get Slater back and expect that the run game
has a different look to it. My only concern with
this team every year, and this is the one where
I'll probably bang my head against the wall until it bleeds,
is that the training room lets me down continually if

(13:24):
you want to start going week to week of who's
up and who's not. And I don't mean this as
the the end to be antagonistic of Frostberg. I am
picking them as a as a dark horse super Bowl
runner here. But the idea is I like the talent
on the field. I just need to see them on it. Yeah,
that's the thing. But it's I feel like it's it's

(13:45):
always something like I love the charge, I love the child,
but it's it's always something. It's well, they're injured here,
Well everybody's now going to jump off them, so it's
time for me. He established the bandwagon in my with
my likeness, wearing my cool sunglasses that I wore last
night into the studio and ready to lead that with

(14:08):
a giant thunderbolt, like I the sous himself at the
front of a bandwagon. So you're like when you're playing
King of the Mountain when you're a kid, and like
there's a bunch of people at the top of the mountain,
they decide to stop playing and they all go down,
and you're like, I could be at the top right
now and everybody's done playing, and you crawled the top
and stand there and go, I'm the king of them
out now everybody else is stop playing. That's the activation

(14:30):
of the game, right because everybody, look, it might have
been snack time, they might have had some range slices
they needed to go consume. And then someone's got to
be the one to say, you know what, We're not
done here yet. Our day is not done. Our parents
don't want us back home yet. The lights aren't on,
and nobody's yelling about dinner. They told us to leave
and go play and not come back. Twitter and out

(14:53):
about a Fresco Mike and swollen down the Jason Smith
Show with my best friend Mike Hartment. So there you go,
our bold prediction picks for next year in the NFL.
I'm telling you give me the Jags and give me
Trevor Lawren Duva. I would hashtag it but I don't
know how many us in Duvall like it, like the
is it three? Is it four? I don't know? Or
you can go three or four. You can go jokes

(15:14):
and mendos on it. Okay, all right, very hashtag bortles
bord dude. We just need some rule changes and an
offense and a defense. Be sure to catch live editions
of The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at
ten pm Eastern seven pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
and the iHeart Radio app Fox Sports Radio Jason Smith

(15:35):
Show with My best friend Mike Harmony Live from the
Tirerock dot Com Studios. And this fun story out of
the NBA. But before we we we move on here
Patrick Beverley, who now is gonna be playing for the
Chicago Bulls. Right. He was part of the part of
the Lakers trade away in the deadline, you know, the

(15:57):
Lakers going full Claviliers when they had Braun where they decide, hey,
you know what, things aren't working, Let's trade half the team. Hey,
let's see if it works. And it worked though, like
hey man, he banish his people all the time. That happens, right,
I mean, look, Patrick Beverley is someone who is always
the missing piece until he's not right. That's Patrick Beverley.
Oh now they got Pat bev All the defense. He's

(16:19):
gonna play lockdown. And then two weeks later it's, oh, yeah,
we gotta trade Patrick Beverley. Yeah, we we gotta move on.
So he's going back home, right because he's from Chicago,
and he has said that his goal is to knock
the Lakers out of the playoff picture when they play
the Bulls later on this season. He is so bitter.

(16:41):
I can't. I want to knock the Lakers out of
the playoffs when they play later on this season. I
did that. Would you believe that this is only his
fifth team? Yeah, he was far more well traveled than that.
Oh yeah, sure, dad, you had a big run in Houston.
Then he was with the Clippers, Quick Stop and Minnesota
before becoming a Laker. No. I kind of did this

(17:03):
on the day that they announced that Lonzo Ball has
been shut down once again, and we go back to
the trade deadline where nothing happened and everybody goes, all right,
we don't even have guys good enough to be given away.
So a lot of frustration in Chicago. But hey, a
little bit of spice with Pat Bev speaking up here. Well,

(17:23):
two things. Number one is so so wait, they're gonna
play now. They actually played back to back games at
the end of March. They play a home and home
against the Lakers. The end of marks is where Patrick break,
we're gonna we're gonna knock the Lakers out of the playoffs. Laughable,
You're gonna knock him out. So Patrick Beverley not only
does he not think the Lakers are gonna make the playoffs,

(17:44):
he doesn't think they're gonna be in position to make
the playoffs. That they like to shoot shot man in
a month. The Lakers are still gonna be treading water,
sitting around the tenth eleventh slot, and they're gonna lose
two games in Chicago. That's gonna knock him out of
the playoffs. When did he become good enough to determine
who wins losses? Well, I mean he's a prognosticators for

(18:04):
his podcast. Sure you can throw Michael Jordan in his
prime on that Bulls team. They're not beating the Lakers.
The Lakers are back. Watched this Bulls team play. They're horrible?
Are your Lakers the worst of the guys gonna be
on the court. Frostburg got bit by the Lakers break.
The Lakers are back, baby back, got he got bit

(18:27):
by the Lakers on that's just happening in La. No
one knows this right now, there's a big zombie outbreak.
A Lakers fans are biting each other, and when one
Lakers fans bites another, the Lakers fan pre bite is
sitting there going, man, I don't know, Man, I'm not
a Lebron fan. I don't know what he's got. I mean, yeah,
he broke the scoring record, but it's not working with

(18:48):
a d anymore. They had to get rid of Westbrook.
Nothing's gonna happen. But then they don't see it, and
then a zombie Laker fan comes up and bites them,
and then they walk away from going oh oh wait,
oh wait, we just traded away half the team. The
Lakers are back. Man, we're back. I saw that game
before the trade deadline. We're back. I gotta go by
another Laker fan. I gotta get him on my side.

(19:09):
And now Frostburg, now we know he's been bitten by
the Lakers zombies. Well, I always have to ask him
this question. Have we ever identified who that guy was
that that gift you always send me of that greasy
looking guy with the glasses and the chain guy. Is
that who that is? Okay? Who it is? All right,
we'll good for him. Just wanted to make sure we

(19:30):
gave him the proper acknowledge because that is the most
used gift on the text thread between us other than
Derek Carna Jet uniform. Oh yeah, yeah, that Derek Carna
Jets uniform, and our text stream has replaced Carmelo Anthony
nodding his head. He used to be here, but now
Derek Carr is a Jet in the text stream we
have in three of us every day. That's become the

(19:51):
biggest one yet future Jet Hall of Famer first ballot
first we'll get you know, we'll get to the we'll
get okay, listen, no, no, no, no, we'll get back
to the first ballot part of it. But you know,
I really want to get into Okay, I feel I
feel like I should. Okay, you're a cow, I'll feel

(20:13):
I am, I am, I'm I'm a I'm a Tuesday.
It's I don't want Derek Carr, but I feel the
need to Warren team Derek Carr after today, right, well,
we'll get to the whole Hall of Fame stuff about it.

(20:35):
But now David Carr, his brother and NFL network personality,
uh said today that Derek Carr's free agency tour will
be a quote long process. Yeah, and he gave a pole,
big long thing on it. And now my first thing
is I'm watching this going. He's like a hype man,
like w w E Now they're man, that's what he's
in for a while. He's like, now it's like, okay,

(20:57):
we have the interview with the wrestler right now here
first but led to the ring by their manager, Paul Bearer,
you know, and here comes David Carr with the and
he's got the the the the urn with all the
ashes of former quarterbacks. Here's the ashes of Jared Stidham.
I mean really that that's kind of who David Carr is. Now.
I'm I'm I'm the hype man. Now, I'm the hype mack. Yeah, yeah,

(21:19):
the night man. Oh man. But but I need I
need to bring this advice because the camp car right
now is really confused. They are really confused. They are
confusing being in demand with being in demand because there's
no one else right now. Okay, it doesn't matter. You're
still the number one guy, exactly exactly. But there's a

(21:43):
difference between winning a race against ten other people and
winning a race when it's just you. Yes, I still
won the race, but nobody else raced this whole You
don't make fun of all those politicians that run out
of prose that we're scared. This is back down, this
is oh, it's a law process. Derek Carr is gonna
take his time. Dude. Let me give you a big

(22:06):
dose of reality. Right now, Derek Carr is getting all
the attention because he's the only quarterback that can sign somewhere.
Everybody else has bounded their contracts, so they have to
wait till the beginning of free agency. With being released
and creating the contract the way it was, it was
awesome for Derek Carr because now he's the only guy
out there and it seems like, oh, Derek Carr is

(22:27):
gonna have all these suitors. The Saints talk to him,
he wouldn't take a pay cut. The Saints moved on,
the Jets had him in, and now instead of hey,
he can be a Jet, it's oh, it's gonna be
a long process. Now, I get part of it is
Aaron Rodgers and Aaron Rodgers is it is sort of
dictating the marketplace on this. But you're Derek Carr, Dude,

(22:50):
you gotta sign someplace before everybody else gets to be
a free agent. You can already see that interest level
in you is not quite what you thought it was
gonna be. You thought it was gonna be. I'm in
a different city every two days, and boy him have
to make a decision here. You're not so the fact
that only two teams have talked to you, one of
them backed away, the other one likes you. Um, what

(23:12):
does that tell you? Man? What do you think is
going to happen when the beginning of March hits and
Ryan Tannehill is out there and Jimmy Garoppolo is out there,
Suddenly the market's gonna be saturated with quarterbacks and and
teams aren't going to see that much of a difference
between you and Jimmy Garoppolo. Well, I like Derek, but hey,
Jimmy was really good. He got to a Super Bowl,
got you an NFC Championship game. Yeah he was hurt,

(23:33):
but Jimmy's gonna be a lot less money. So I'm
gonna sign Jimmy Derek Carr is gonna sit here and
do this whole foolhardy. Oh, I'm gonna take my time,
and he's gonna be left standing without without a seat,
and he's gonna be begging for a job somewhere. We're
going where he doesn't quite want to go, because if
he doesn't sign, other teams are gonna sign guys fast. Watch.
That's how it's gonna happen. Someone's gonna say, hmm, Derek Carr,

(23:55):
Ryan Tannehill, Boy, Tannehill's done pretty well. He's put some
numbers up, kind of like Derek Carr. Uh. Yeah, but
Derek Carr wants three years in one hundred and twenty million. Yeah, no, no, no,
Ryan Tannehill, You're my guy for two years and forty million.
That's kind of what I want to do. He is
going to find himself without options really quick. Forget about
this taking a long time. Dude. You have the marketplace

(24:17):
to yourself right now. You have it for another seven
or eight days. You got to find your new team
in the next seven or eight days before everything else,
before your money demands and the other circumstances of guys
becoming available takes away from you in a few days.
Aaron Rodgers gonna make his decision, and maybe he wants
to get traded. The Ravens have to make a decision

(24:38):
with Lamar Jackson coming up in about ten days, and
if they put the franchise tag on him and he says,
I'm not going to play here and they put him
on the market, Guess what people want to trade for
Lamar Jackson. Guests who doesn't want to get Guess who
people aren't interested in signing anymore? Derek Carr guests who
falls all the way down the list. Derek Carr. That's
how it goes. If there was a lot of interest
in Car right now, Mike I would get it. Okay,

(24:58):
the guy's going to be able to write it his
own ticket, because if you can't get Aaron Rodgers, Car's
the next best guy. But clearly that's not the case
because other teams he's now been available for will over
a week and it was the only time he's gonna
talk to anybody he's been the Jets, because the Jets
just oozed desperation. So that tells me that, hey, guys,
the market isn't what you think it is. Teams are
turned off by your buy your money demands. And if

(25:20):
you think you're gonna take a long time, yeah, good luck,
you're gonna say, oh, um, hey, Raiders, Hey, hey guys.
You know, yeah, you know you didn't get Aaron Rodgers
because the Jets gotta buy. How about I take a
little as money and come back. I get he's gonna
wind up screwing himself. He's gotta wind up. He's got
to pick a team when you have the market to yourself.

(25:42):
He's got to find a team before free agency, or
he's gonna find himself in a world of difficulty. Yeah.
I think the difficult thing here is what David Carr
has done. And this smacks of kind of Lebron James
quote that we had from yesterday, right, which is the
twenty three most important and being available whatever, which was
all right. There's a lot of Anthony Davis talk in there.

(26:05):
This is kind of the same thing of well, you know,
he's gonna take his time. In other words, if you
really want him, come to the table now with your
strongest offer. Please. That's really all it is, is I
all right? We accept that. And the meeting went well.
You could leak out whatever you want in terms of
the potential greatness here and what it means for your

(26:25):
for posterity. But short term, it's the make your great offer,
otherwise it's gonna end up lingering. And if it lingers,
then well now it becomes a mess. And I think
he's still outside of being able to trade for one
of these players. And that's three right, because I'll include
your Justin Field's folly there behind Rogers and behind Lamar Jackson,

(26:50):
you've got Fields, and then it's a pretty big gap.
I think from where we are from Car and I'm
not the biggest Car fan, but to Tannehill is at
this point, I think there's enough of a gap that
you know, there's still some consideration to be had. Doesn't
mean that the Jets won't decide to go down that

(27:11):
rabbit hole, particularly if David keeps flapping his gums. I
think I think he's the biggest enemy for Derek Carr
right now. Just be quiet, let him work out, Let
it work out. Be quiet, stop trying to, you know,
fuel the fire. But that's kind of what he did here.
It was the oh you think we're gonna play silly? No, no, no, no, no,
this is the best quarterback. Man. He might as well

(27:32):
again go back to being the hype man. All right,
he's the guy, he's Don King, he's Paul Hayman, he's
whoever you need him to be, talking about how great
his brother is and how wronged he was and how
you could be the one to unleash the true greatness.
So come on in, And that's really what this was.
Oh yeah, it's gonna linger. Well, well, lets you come

(27:52):
with the right offer right now, worst worst, worst strategy.
I mean, I get that. It seems like he's the
bell of the ball, right Oh, Derek Cars out there
and I was going to talk to teams about a trade,
and now the Jets are guys. Man, there's a reason
why if free agency started, this is not the way
it's going For if you were made available at the

(28:12):
same time as everybody else, you'd be struggling. You'd be
struggling even more than you are now to find interest.
And again, when a whole league has their chance at
you and only two teams have shown interest and one
is already backed off, and there's so many quarterback needy teams,
what do you think is going to happen to your marketplace.
It's not going to suddenly get better. It's not because

(28:34):
nobody sees Derek Carr as someone who, boy, you are
the next level quarterback. We have to go have. Derek
Carr is a player that teams would say, hey, if
we got Derek Carr, it fit into what we wanted
to do. I feel pretty good about that. But I
would also feel pretty good about other quarterbacks at less
money for a shorter amount of time. That's how business
works in the NFL. Teams will find themselves very easy

(28:57):
to convince them that hey, Garoppolo a two years and
forty million or Tan Hill a two years and forty
million is a much better risk than Derek Carr at
three years in one hundred and twenty. And that's how
teams are gonna operate. And we're gonna draft a guy
and if Tannehill's not any good and the guy, hopefully
the guy we drafted, we bring him along and he
turns out to be somebody pretty good. That's how teams
are going to operate. And so I don't know why

(29:19):
this whole long process is out there. Yeah, I get
you have to wait a little bit for Aaron Rodgers,
but man, the teams that there's many teams in need
quarterbacks and they're not calling you good luck, good luck
with this whole long process strategy. It's a bold strategy,
cot and let's see how it works for well. I
think just to put the punctuation mark has been interesting,
right because we watched during the coaching carousel the number

(29:42):
of teams that really made sure their social media put
out every note on every person they talked to. Today,
we talked to this guy and this guy at special
guest doctor Joyce Brothers, and then we went back here.
You gotta be at a certain age to understand what
that joke was. Charlie Nelson Riley might have popped in
as well, but the idea being that you had all

(30:05):
this quote transparency. Hey, we're gonna show you we talked
in and we left no stone unturned. Whereas with the
quarterback derby, I gotta imagine there's a lot of conversation
we're just not hearing about it. So I don't know
that it's the full on, you know, radio silence related
to Derek Carr. I like that you're paranoid as a

(30:26):
Jets fan to that level. But I got to imagine
there's still some conversations that have been had. We know,
we talked to the Saints and they couldn't come to
get in grips on where compensation was. Don't be surprised
if maybe that doesn't move as we get closer to
things becoming real with Lamar and company. Be sure to

Sports Radio The Jason Smith Show with My bass friend
Mike Harmon from the ti iraq dot com Studios. Big
news out of the NFL tonight. I didn't think we'd
get that late breaking woes bomb of the NFL, but

(31:10):
we did. As Brock Purty, who has been waiting for
swelling in his right elbow to reduce so he could
have his torn UCL repaired, was supposed to happen tomorrow
in Texas. It was supposed to happen tomorrow, right, you're
talking about Wednesday, February twenty second. Well, the inflammation has
not gone down enough, so the surgeon will be delayed further. Now.

(31:34):
They're gonna regroup sometime in early March with the hope
of getting it done then. But it's not for certain
if it's going to get done, they're gonna regroup and say, okay,
where where's the swelling at? Where can we get the
surgery done. This now puts the timeline of Brock Purty
in a best case scenario getting back on a football

(31:56):
field sometime in late August. All right, this whole Brock Purdy,
Trey Lance quarterback Derby ain't happening. Trey Lance is going
to be the starting quarterback of the San Francisco forty
nine ers to start this season. It's gonna be too much.
Purdy's just gonna come back and be able to throw
the football at the end of August. After Trey Lance,

(32:16):
who was coming off an injury himself, but he's gonna
be cleared to run soon and he'll be good to
go for OTA's. He's gonna get all the reps, He's
gonna get everything. So Trey Lan and you know, he's
not gonna do enough to lose the job in the
preseason because quarterbacks don't play enough anymore for that to happen.
So he's not going to lose the gig. So all
the I mean, yes, are the Niners in great shape
with with Lance and brock Purdy. Yes, they are one

(32:39):
hundred percent because Lance has a potential and brock Purdy
burst on the scene and showed I can be pretty
good and maybe on the next Tom Brady. But as
far as what it's going to be for next year,
Trey Lance is the guy. Purdie's not getting back on
the field to late August. He can't win the job
at that point, it's not going to happen. So Lance
will be the guy out of the gate with all
the reps in the preseason beginning of the season. Now
he falters and brock Purdy gets back into shape, yeah,

(33:01):
he'll get the job. It'll be a very short leash
for Tray Lance and keeping keeping that job. But there's
not going to be any there, There's no more question
about it. It's not going to be purty your Lance
and they trade Trey Lance. No, it's pretty simple right now.
The Niners are gonna have both quarterbacks for next year.
They'll bring in some guy to be third, you know,
to take some reps because Jimmy Garoppolo's not coming back.
But this is gonna be Trey Lance's job and he's

(33:22):
the guy starting for the Niners. Next season. Well, that'll
be the real interesting part for the for the forty
nine ers as they move forward, is that if Purdy's
not going to be ready to go and throw it
all till the end of August. Now you've got this injury,
and it's a significant one at that and Lance is
coming off a couple of significant injuries of his own.
You're not just buying and bringing in another journeyman off

(33:46):
the rack. You're probably going a little deeper and put
a little more money since you're paying neither of those
guys much in the way of salary, to benefit and
make sure your safeguard that position. Because you're looking at
us an area where a number of these guys are
gonna be coming up for contracts pretty soon. You don't
have a lot of time to as we like to

(34:06):
use waste in this scenario, right, a lot of a
lot of talent, and we think Lynch and Company can
keep the machine moving. But every year you don't win
becomes a big potential crisis. And we're looking at Philadelphia, right.
They just were on the precipice of this huge thing
you would have looked at in your own mind like

(34:27):
a genius. Instead, they lose, and now you've got all
sorts of changes afoot. For the forty nine ers, Yeah,
they were able to go next man up the whole
shark's tooth kind of analogy I've been using. You're right,
you take a bite and the next one pops in,
and it's like, all right, let's go again. That that's
a dangerous way to run year after year. But what

(34:48):
it really missaddens me is no longer do we have
a competition all offseason that involves parak party. Yeah, we
all losing this scenario. I mean, I hope he's he's
on the road to recovery and that that's imminent and
doesn't get kicked down another month or so, because that
would indicate that there's really even more structural problems going

(35:10):
on there. So I wish him a quick and speedy recovery.
We like stories like mister Irrelevant, but that is uh,
that's tough man. None puts the forty nine ers makes
their offseason a lot more interesting in terms of how
they maneuver and the chess pieces they have to play. See.
I think that the one thing in this is that
it streamlines it. There's no question about who the quarterback

(35:32):
is you don't have the headache off all off season
of hey, Trey wasn't great and seven on seven Today,
but Brock was pretty good or Brock was bad and
seven on seven Today and Trader. You don't have that.
You at least have a line of demarcation, so brock
Purdy can rehabilitate and understand that, Hey, listen, Trey hasn't
has improved himself either. And even if let's say brock
Purdy is healthy and they lose the NFC Championship game,

(35:56):
let's just say he has a good game and they
lose to the Eagles, right, because the Eagles were the
better team. He comes into this to this offseason having
to battle it out with Trey Lance, that they wouldn't
just give him the job. He wins the Super Bowl,
then you give him the job. But okay, if you
lose the NFCY Championship game, we still may want to
see Trey Lance out there. So it's not like he's

(36:17):
lost a lot. It's it's he would still be having
to battle it out over the course of the summer.
It's not like he lost his gig. So no matter
what happens, he still would have been in some kind
of battle. It's just the battle for him now, is okay.
If Trey Lance is great, Tray Lance keeps this job.
If Trey Lance falters after not very long, the desire
to see brock Purdy in there is going to be overwhelming.

(36:38):
It may only have to be like two games, Like
if Trey Lance starts out terrible and the Niners are
owing two and they lose like twenty three to seven
and twenty four to ten. Hey, the memory of what
brock Purdy did is right there. He may get that
gig back in week three as soon as he's healthy,
so that that could really happen for him. I like
that in theory the thing had come back to it.
You got two guys coming off significant injuries, one of

(37:00):
which the earliest timetable is about two weeks before the
start of the season. I could give them Zach Wilson.
I give you Zach Wilson for Christian McCaffrey away Twitter
and on Man's crash dot Dot Mike has swollen dome
Coming up next. One quarterback could be a future first
ballot Hall of Famer. That's next. Fox
