Speaker 2 (00:23):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 3 (00:31):
Great eggs and welcome in our two of the program
we roll on here Fox Sports Radio. So much going
on two days to the Hall of Fame game. I
think it's like five days until that big Nickelback show
is part of the Hall of Fame experience.

Speaker 4 (00:51):
Perfect.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
It is a well choreographed machine we have rolling here
at Fox Sports Radio. Alex tyshert our technical producer, so
brilliantly bringing it back. But yeah, there's some estimates of
how much they're getting paid. Nice payday for Nickelback. Don't
tell me that people don't care. Mock them as you will.
At some point you bought the album and now you

(01:12):
can find it at your local goodwill. But either way,
it's out there. It's out there. You had it at
Swollen Dome. At Ormberg, where you find us on Twitter,
of course, at Fox Sports Radio FORIDA plus affiliates nationwide.
Thanks for listen to us wherever you're at the iHeartRadio app.
We appreciate you being part of our extended family. We
always ask that you continue to evangelize. Send it along

(01:34):
to friends and family, tell them to listen in and rage,
and gage and look and entertain you along the way
and keep you informed of what's going on here in
our greater sporting universe.

Speaker 2 (01:46):
But as we look.

Speaker 3 (01:47):
Forward, here Rich one of the guys. You heard it
in Steve de Seger's update, Father time is not the
only thing trying to chase down Aaron Rodgers. No, Trey
Hendrickson is finally returned to camp. He took a little
time to heal, maybe mentally get away. That doesn't mean
that he has a deal in place. He and Mike

(02:08):
Brown and the team there, Tobin and all have to
still come to an agreement. But showing up we'll save
him at least well the fifty thousand dollars a day
that he can be fined under the CBA he's expected
to make currently what at fifteen point eight plus his
signing bonus whatever, get some to nearly eighteen point seven

(02:29):
or so in compensation this year before becoming an unrestricted
free agent a year from now. But getting him back
on the defensive line after what was a horrid start
last year. Lunan Arumo ended up walking the plank because
they were just terrible. He was great, the rest of
that unit was awful, and Joe Burrow has his wide
receivers in tow as we talked about paying superstars. Got

(02:52):
it done and they finally get their first round pick,
and it looks like Hendrickson, maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow,
but soon we'll give you under contract, so maybe the
defense can take a step forward so they don't give
away a month, even though that has been the norm
under the current coaching regime.

Speaker 5 (03:09):
Yeah, yeah, look, these these times in the preseason.

Speaker 4 (03:15):
You know what, Mike, I have your question. I have
a question for you.

Speaker 5 (03:19):
What do you think is the best team building exercise
for a preseason for a team in the preseason, I'm
talking about roster construction, I'm talking about negotiations. I'm talking
about like, if you're going to build the perfect team,
do you think that it matters whether or not you're

(03:40):
having banting or discussion about contracts leading into a season.
Do you want to completely quiet on those fronts or
do you think sometimes these things can actually help a franchise.

Speaker 4 (03:51):
I think in any way, I.

Speaker 3 (03:52):
Think stirred up a little bit. It can It can
be okay, is you know, there's always going to be
that push pull and as the owner, front office, whatever
you're trying to set, you know, online in the sand,
because everybody's watching what you do. Now, there's two schools
a thought to it, right, It's the how do you
treat your superstars? Because I'm not gonna get treated like

(04:14):
that if I'm one of the rank and file guys. Right,
So if you're not treating Hendrickson, and this goes back
to the Jerry Jones stuff as well, if I can't
get to an easy place without you assailing me in
the media and trying to eviscerate me. Even if it's
for show, it still becomes personal. Right, even if you know,

(04:34):
all right, this is part of the clown show. I
get it. I'm the latest guy that he's trotting up
on the stage. It's like a comedian doing crowd work.
It's like, all right, I see that guy. Maybe he's
a little goofy looking. Maybe he's he's gone a level above,
you know, like the classic sitcom pairings, you know, Kevin
James and Leah Remenie or whatever, Fred Flintstone and Wilma

(04:57):
that you know, she's the better looko on, he's the
slumpy guy. But that's the guy you're now going to
try to pick on at a comedy club. And it
just happens over the course of the night that's been
attempting with me. Guess what I do radio for a living,
So that usually doesn't work well for guys that are
trying to do you know, the crowd work it. They
pick on me. But it's very much that with Jerry Jones, Right,

(05:18):
all right, who's my next guy that I need to
talk about and try to see if I can get
some yucks from the room. Well, at some point you
get a little salty and you get a little tired
if your name keeps getting brought up. But that's just
the way Jerry Jones does business, and you deal with it.
Most of the other owners aren't doing that out in public,
but behind the scenes. The longer it drags on, the

(05:39):
more speculation. Depending how venomous the local media and local
talk shows may be because from a national perspective, as
much as folks can complain, hey, you know, they go
after and they talk about the Cowboys or the Steelers
like we'll do in a minute or three or four
of these teams a lot. That means you get to
fly under the radar. But guess what, it's still percolating

(06:00):
in your hometown to where it bubbles over. And that's
what you're gonna hear when you go to the grocery store,
to a restaurant, like it's there, the barber shop, all
the way down the line. So I think it's healthy
to a point, but you can't tell me it helped
the forty nine ers. Now, the injury bug and plague
that hit them certainly did the rest of the damage.
But going into camp fighting and trying to put out

(06:22):
fires on multiple fronts for multiple stars is not the
way to go. If it's one or two, I guess
it can drag out to a bit, but eventually, you know,
you got to make sure you do right because it
is an age where guys can have plenty of options
and you can't restrict but one guy. When you look
at franchise tags, everybody else will have their opportunity to

(06:44):
look into the open marketplace.

Speaker 4 (06:46):
Yeah, there's no question about it.

Speaker 5 (06:48):
I think that scuttle butts in the preseason oftentimes get
resolved for obvious reasons.

Speaker 4 (06:55):
I think I think.

Speaker 5 (06:57):
Both sides realize that after all is set up and done,
they need each other, right, you know, the owners need
the players, The players need the owners. The league in
order for it to keep going, needs to have needs
to have a body of interested, hard working men who
are going to risk a lot to gain a lot.

(07:19):
And and that's that's that's the method to this madness,
so to speak. And you know, look again, that risk
is all around. It's omnipresent. Doesn't matter whether it's O, T,
A S. Or it's you know, preseason practices, preseason games,
or regular season toil.

Speaker 4 (07:37):
Like it's there.

Speaker 5 (07:38):
There are going to be guys who succumb, whether it's
too season ending injuries or it's two minor injuries, things
that they're gonna keep them off the field for a
little bit of time only practice time, but available for
game time, or or it could be something in between.

Speaker 4 (07:52):
It's it's it's uh, it's it's haphazard.

Speaker 5 (07:56):
Though, when you're one of those unfortunate teams that is
going through through contract strife, negotiation issues, and or also
dealing with injuries in mass leading up to a season.
It can be it can be sometimes a harbinger of
things to come. Sometimes, you know, it's it's actually to

(08:17):
your advantage to get through some of that strife, either
in the preseason or the early season. And that's the
reason why I posed the question the way I did
to you is because I was curious if you were
on the side of you know, hey, you know, sometimes
you need to go through a little pain early. This way,
everything else seems a little bit easier as you roll
into the regular season, as you get going, get going

(08:40):
on with the games in the moments that really matter
for the twenty twenty five season.

Speaker 3 (08:44):
Yeah, some of it becomes the long term when you're
talking about contracts and how you handle your business. Right
you show, particularly if you have any level of continuity
in your squad, you know, this is how we're going
to handle things. And either you understand or you want
to and that's fine. Uh, but in the end, UH,
they'll make their The best decision. Where I think it

(09:05):
helps to a large degree, rich is if it drags
out a little bit and the guys not on the field.
Guess what other guys are getting reps? Yeah, other guys
are getting to look at you know, you know, but
in this case, the guys that are out there, and
that's not saying Hendrickson is necessarily going to go full
tilt at every workout whatever, but by him not being there,

(09:26):
other guys that may be called upon have to see
other looks. They've got to go against that, you know,
first unit of the Bengals, which is you know, formidable
in and of itself, that we know what that offense
is capable of. So not the offensive line necessarily, So
maybe not the right right example, but in this particular case,
you know, because they don't grade out very well. Rich,

(09:48):
I think you you're well aware there that it really
comes under the the acumen the quick decision making getting
rid of the damn ball uh that Joe Burrow will
have to do. But it's it's to that point of
a little bit of stripe there does open up opportunity
right where you know, we watched in Cleveland, we talked
about them last hour. Canny Pickett not being available means

(10:10):
that Dylan Gabriel and Shade or Sanders are gonna get
more reps, They're gonna get more looks, more opportunities, more
coaching as opposed to sitting behind Pickett because Joe Flacco's
just there, like you know what he can do. But yeah,
Kenny Pickett still an approve it kind of situation coming
in on the cheap. You know, after riding high with

(10:31):
the Eagles that him missing time is significant for him,
but it also is for these rookies getting some reps,
and that trickles down through every other position when you
get into these stalemates or some of these these off
field kind of battles between the front office and the players.

Speaker 5 (10:48):
Yeah, all that stuff really does matter, right, everything you
just mentioned, because everything affects everything the same way we're
talking about Micah Parsons earlier about how he has a
not just his his effect is global when we're talking
about the Dallas Cowboys because he's obviously a franchise shifting
player and his talent is undeniable.

Speaker 4 (11:10):
His availability will.

Speaker 5 (11:12):
Have an enormous impact on the whole roster, as will
Trey Hendrickson, as will any you know, main player, if
not you know, franchise player, and I mean significant player
on any team. But but yeah, when when a player
like that is going through contract strife or unavailable due
to injury or like in the case of the Rams,

(11:35):
Matthew Stafford, maybe it's a really bad back injury and
they're trying to hide it from us, or maybe they're
just being abundantly cautious with Matthew Stafford, which is smart
because he's an aging veteran or an age heed veteran
player who they're really leaning on this season. But what
does that mean. It means the rest of the roster

(11:56):
has to step up. So that means obviously at the
position we're talking about, you know, in the terms of
the Cincinnati Bengals edge rusher, you know, Dallas Cowboys, if
there's limited reps for Micah Well, that's obviously a defensive
end or a linebacker, you know, a quarterback in LA,
these situations avail multitudes of opportunities for younger, hungry players

(12:19):
to prove themselves.

Speaker 4 (12:20):
And so it's interesting.

Speaker 5 (12:22):
Yeah, contract strife can really harm a team at times,
but there can be a positive hangover or halo effect
because well, that guy's out, somebody else is working behind
the scenes, and that may fuel the fire of the
player who's coming back into the lineup after seeing a

(12:43):
young player maybe have some successes at practice, because there
is a competitiveness even inter squad. There's always competitiveness at
every position. It doesn't matter how well established the starter is.
You're always looking in the rearview mirror. And also if
you're not on the field, technically speaking, you're getting worse
while everybody else is getting better.

Speaker 4 (13:03):
And so there's that aspect too.

Speaker 5 (13:05):
It may help some of the younger guys on the
roster get the reps that they would be missing if
that superstar player who's in a contract negotiation wouldn't have
received if they were there.

Speaker 3 (13:16):
Yeah, to put it in perspective, go back to the
Cowboys and the Micah Parsons CD lamp stuff right, go
back to pumping iron with Arnold Schwarzenegger says, you know,
when you're on top of the mountain, the food it's
always there. You're not hungry. These other guys are hungry.
That was my bad d and Arnold schwarzenegger quick impression.

(13:36):
They're not hungry than not. But we continue on. We've
got our buddy Joff Palmerrosi joining us next. As we
talk Hall of Fame Ryan Sandberg, and we got forty
eight hours till the trade deadline. We had a guy
traded in the middle of a doubleheader today. Rich Hornberger,
we'll see if your squad down there in San Diego

(13:57):
has something in the offing. What are the Yankees doing?
The Dodgers doing they had to call up today so
much and more. John Paul Morosi joins us next rich
Orberg in for Jason Smith on Mike Harmon and This
is Fox Sports.

Speaker 2 (14:08):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 3 (14:19):
Welcome back in It's Fox Sport, It's Radio Jason Smith
Show with me Mike Harmon. No Jason Smith back tomorrow
in instead our buddy Rich Hornberger joins us again live
from San Diago. You hear him every morning down there.
You follow him on Twitter at Hornberger.

Speaker 2 (14:36):
But Rich, we're.

Speaker 3 (14:36):
Gonna stop our NFL talk for a minute. We're gonna
hit the brakes as if you got the red light,
you know, the red light green light drills, and now
you have to stop and just run in place for
a second. Ah, Now we're gonna go to our guy.
We're gonna go out to Major League Baseball. And you
hear this music, you know it can be only one
man MLB Network, longtime friend of the show, a legend

(15:01):
in his own right at John Morosi, j O N mrs.
I lead the Hut because Mom said so, as he's
confirmed on the show before. It's our buddy, John Paul
Morosi JP. Good to be with you. A big week
in Major League Baseball, starting with the Hall of Fame
induction and all the speeches, and we'll eventually get to

(15:22):
the trade deadline.

Speaker 2 (15:23):
How you doing today, My friend doing.

Speaker 6 (15:25):
Great, Mike and Rich one of my favorite weeks of
the year. Cooper's down over the weekend, and then of
course the trade deadline coming up. Each hero's speech is
one that we're going to remember forever. And Dave Parker
the second too. I thought his speech was especially poignant
in honor of his father, the rhymes at the end,

(15:47):
the back and forth with his words and his father's words.
Just an extraordinary day of speeches in a great weekend,
all the way around there in Cooper Soid of course
heavy hearts to the whole Baseball World on the passing
of Ryan Samberg, a legend of the game, a true gentleman,
someone whom I had the great pleasure to meet and
in the speak with on numerous occasions. So for all

(16:08):
of us that have had a chance to meet Ryan
Samberg and all of us has watched him play, I
know right now certainly heavy hearts all across the sports world.

Speaker 3 (16:16):
Well, and that's it, right tweet you had, you know,
talking with Wade Boggs, and I saw this echoed with
a number of Hall of famers. Andre Dawson was delivering
a little bit of a speech at the National Sports
Collector's Convention going on in Rosemont, out there outside of Chicago,
and had to pause a couple of times as he
was recounting, you know what Ryan Sandberg meant to him

(16:37):
as a teammate and his eventual enshrinement in Cooperstown and
just so many not a dry eye thinking about it.
And me as a little southside Chicago boy, I hated
the Cubs, still do JP, but Samberg was one of
those guys you marveled at he.

Speaker 6 (16:54):
Did, and and honestly, we saw a statement from President
Obama that echoes the same thing of course a White
Sox fan, and he shared in the solidarity for the
city of Chicago in the morning of a legend. And
you're right, Ryan Sandberg. I was actually just got a
text message from my brother today and the same statement

(17:14):
he made that we, of course grew up in Michigan,
but the Cubs were his national League team growing up
because of Sandberg and Dawson and Grace, And that was
not a unique statement to my brother, certainly because of
the appeal nationally of Sandberg on WGN. Of course, the
Braves are playing on TBS the time. And this just

(17:35):
kind of takes you back to the foundational elements of
a lot of us as baseball fans. What drew us
to the game. It's that everyday consistency and the chances
for brilliance, and Sandberg represented both. He represented the steadiness
at that position, the flawless defense for so many years,
and then the spectacular the two home runs off of

(17:58):
Brewce suitor and the way in which he became quickly
an icon of the game. Uh and and someone who
And then I'm glad you referenced the story that I
shared about Wade Box because I was interviewing Bogs we
had about an hour together, Wade and I, and we
talked about his career and the ups and downs of

(18:18):
his life, his career, and most importantly we talked about
friends and those that have supported him. And when he
talked about Ryan Samberg, he got very choked up and
it was hard for him to speak, and he looked
to the sky and said, take take care of my friend, Lord,
because he knew, he knew how imminently this was likely
going to happen, that conversation with Saturday, and here we

(18:39):
are just a couple of days later. So I with
heavy hearts and and certainly on the minds of everybody
that was in Cooperstown this weekend too.

Speaker 4 (18:48):
Man.

Speaker 5 (18:49):
Yeah, sad said sad moment there for major League Baseball fans,
but as you mentioned, fans definitely looking forward to the
trade deadline. I would say there are a lot of
Major League Baseball cities. There are a couple that are
going to be more in the seller's seat instead of
the buyer's seat, the White Sox being one of them.

(19:10):
The Orioles potentially looking to deal position players, and you
specifically mentioned in a tweet. I think this went out
about forty minutes Ago John that the Padres are looking
to deal Dylan Cees, but a rental starter wouldn't fit
for the White Sox the Orioles. So how would a

(19:31):
deal get done and the Padres get a backstop or
a position player that they so sorely need.

Speaker 6 (19:39):
Well, it's a great question. And here's basically what I've
been told in the last day or so that the Padres.
I think it's important to understand the context of why
Dylan Sees his name has been out there, and why
Robert swat as his name has been out there. It's
not that they're just trying to punt on the season,
that they're trying to deal within a budget. I think

(20:03):
their budget is not quite as flexible as it would
have been a couple of years ago when they were
very aggressive in making some signings, and so they have
to stay within the budget. And if you're going to
be able to add a left fielder like Ramon Loreano,
for example, or Luis Robert Junior is another case, or
perhaps Stephen Kwan, the idea would be that you trade,

(20:26):
you would trade Cease, let's say, to a team that
needs a starting pitcher right now, perhaps the Chicago Cubs
for example, and then the Cubs would give you one
of their prospects, maybe Kevin Alcantra or others that are
in the minor leagues there right now, and then you
would take that prospect again, let's say it's al Contra,

(20:48):
and then you would move that player along to Baltimore
for Loreano, to the White Sox for Luis Robert Jr.
That's why you would involve that third team to say,
illitate a trade like this. And certainly Aj Preler, the
Podres president of baseball operations, He's always been very imaginative.
He's not afraid to do uniquely structured deals, and so

(21:11):
in a lot of ways rich as you know from
following the Podreys carefully they're in the San Diego market
that they are, they're always interested in making creative trades.
And I think that Aj is buying and selling right
now for a very specific reason, which is that he
has to maintain the budget. And you're almost thinking about
this like how an NBA team thinks about a trade,

(21:32):
where at the deadline of the NBA is both you
know better than me. You sometimes get contracts in, contracts
out because of the cap, and so you have to
be very creative. It's that same kind of a concept
right now, except we just have to do with the
Podres having a more fixed payroll number than typically they
have in recent years.

Speaker 3 (21:51):
Got to make all those numbers match up in the NBA,
which is always fun, and then you get your apron
rules and whatever else. JP All that my usha the
inside baseball that we applied liberally to every other sport.
John Palmer Rossi our guest to Jason Smith schell with
me Mike carbon Rich Ornberger in for Jason Smith. Obviously,
I reside here in Los Angeles. Tough day at the

(22:12):
plate for Sho Hao Tani, but you've seen him back
on the mound. So it's one extra chip in the
arms race, as it were. They have a call up
to the lineup. But what do we expect from the
from the Dodgers here as we get to the deadline,
Dustin May and others. Is it holding pat and just

(22:33):
waiting for the for the cavalry to come back.

Speaker 6 (22:36):
I don't think they're gonna wait, Mike. They are. They
are not the kind of team that waits, and so
I think that they will be aggressive. The focus more
than likely will be the bullpen. They need, I think
to address that part of their club. May going out
could be part of the thought process if if he

(22:56):
maybe ends up allowing them to to get more of
a true relief pitcher. I think May is someone who, yeah,
he's he's had some success with the starting pitcher in
this league, but by and large he's not been able
to be in every fifth day consistent starting pitcher. And
this team right now they need to figure out who
their rotation is going to be going down the stretch. Now.

(23:19):
You might do that by either potentially bringing in someone
that's a that's a high end starting pitcher, or you
do it by by perhaps protecting those starters by building
out your bullpen and handling the game from the back
end forward. And I think that's probably the more expedient
way to do things and the way in which the
Dodgers are more than likely to proceed. So a lot

(23:41):
of those names you've been hearing, Ryan Helsley of the Cardinals,
Peter Fairbanks of the Rays, Johann Duran of the Minnesota Twins,
Harrison Bader could potentially be a fit for the Dodgers
if there's a If there's a bigger deal there with
the Minnesota Twins, and you think about maybe Beata and
Durram together in the same deal. So right now the

(24:03):
name of the game for the Dodgers is going to
be pitching and certainly hoping that Mookie Betts has a
more Mooky like conclusion to the season than what he's
had to this point.

Speaker 4 (24:15):
Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker 5 (24:16):
Let me ask you a more generalized question heading into
the second half of the season here trade deadline looming,
are there teams or a team in particular, that you've
been impressed with through the first half that maybe missing
some of the finishing work, Like, you know, if we're
going to compare it to a house, you know, the
trim is in on, you know, all the windowsills aren't perfect.

(24:39):
You know, there might be some molding that still needs
to be attached, but they are close to a finished product,
and you could see a great blossoming here as we
head down the home stretch of the season.

Speaker 6 (24:51):
I'll give you two and they're both in the American League,
the Seattle Mariners and the Boston Red Sox. I think
the Mariners they probably I want to add a little
bit more bullpen, but I like the foundation of their team.
They were able to in my view, Rich very adeptly
manage the pitching injuries that they incurred earlier this year.

(25:13):
Logan Gilbert was out for a while, George Kirby was
out for a while. They called up a young native
of a great state of Michigan. By the way, Logan
Evans has pitched wonderfully. And I'm not just highlighting him
because it's from Michigan, but he's actually really he's a
really good pitcher. So Evans has been a godsend for them,
and they've already acquired Josh Naylor. But I look at

(25:33):
this team as maybe needing one more reliever, potentially two
more relievers. You can never have enough bullpen guys. Again,
the bullpen's the third of your team, so you got
to make sure that you fortify that part before you
begin the journey down the stretch. So I look at
the Mariners as maybe being a move or two away
from being a very dangerous team down the stretch. Now
the Boston Red Sox Bregman is back healthy. They reformulated

(25:56):
their team on the fly when they traded Roth Feldevers.
They're one of the best teams baseball since they made
that trade. Roman Anthony has been catalyzing the lineup from
the top. Again, I mentioned having a Bregman back in
healthy is really important. I think they may need one
more arm, and if they get one more arm, I
like the Boston Red Sox. I like them a lot.
The Blue Jays are in a really good position to

(26:20):
win the division, but I look at the Red Sox
as being poised to make a nice run, maybe claim
the first wild card, hosts a playoffs series at Senway,
and be a team that no one wants to face
in the postseason because in Garrett Crochet, I think rich
the Red Sox have one of the true aces in

(26:42):
the entire American League. Scooble is won, obviously, Crochet might
be when you look at the field of teams that
actually make the playoffs, Crochet is going to be one
of the top five starting pitchers in probably either side
of the bracket, including the National League. He's really that good,
and I look at him as being a true postseason eighth,
the kind of guy the Red Sox have not had

(27:03):
in a while, and I think it's going to be
a very very I think it's gonna be very very
good October for the Boston Red Sox. I like the
way that team is built, and I would love to
see them play in October.

Speaker 3 (27:14):
Can't wait to see Garrett Croche and Carlos Rodin size
it up each other in the final stretches off for
for a title, you know, and then as the White
Sox guy just point and go, I knew where there
they are. There they are the only the.

Speaker 6 (27:28):
Only better thing would be if if the Red Sox
acquire or even let's say the Dodgers acquire Luis Roberts Jr.
And he goes off like Manny Ramirez circa two thousand
and eight. That's that's also a possibility, which you know
what's gonna happen. Look, and I wasn't even gonna mention
tonight in former Red Sox Exploits, But did you just

(27:50):
see who had a Grand Slam for the Milwaukee Brewers
and that.

Speaker 2 (27:53):
In that NL Yeah down there, yeah.

Speaker 6 (27:56):
The omer White Sox versus Baseman and the former Calbert.

Speaker 3 (28:00):
Andrew vaughs, Yeah, get him out of Chicago. Suddenly he
remember not to hit all of that to say, And look,
you mentioned your in Seattle Mariners. It's a running bit
on the show of predicting.

Speaker 4 (28:12):
Great.

Speaker 3 (28:12):
Thanks Julio, Rodriguez now hitting for power once again. But
last thing for us JP is that you know, with
and with Aaron Judge hitting the IL, cal Rally is
now your favorite to win at al MVP.

Speaker 6 (28:26):
He is. And listen, I thought that even before Judge
went on the IL that there was a very real
chance that Ralli was going to win that award again.
Right now, it looks good for the Mariners to make
the playoffs. Even if they miss it, which I don't
think they will, it's going to be barely. And so
Raleigh would be the reason that his team is right there,

(28:48):
either in the playoffs or on the cuff of it.
And he's working on what we could objectively describe as
the single best offensive, power hitting, lugging season by a
catcher in the history of the game. And we just
came came back from Cooperstown, where you're very used to

(29:10):
saying things like this had never happened before the first
time ever it had happened. And when you say that
about a player, typically that gets you, as Mad Dog
Russ would say, some black type next to your name
in a big time season, that gets you an award.
And that's exactly the kind of year that cal Rally

(29:30):
from the great state of North Carolina is working on
there for the Seattle Mariners.

Speaker 3 (29:35):
He's a legend Hall of Famer himself. It's John Paul
Morosi with us. Joins us each and every week MLB
Network has been with us, a longtime friend of the show,
a Michigander loving his soccer and hockey talk as well.
But coming off to the high of the Hall of
Fame induction weekend, JP, thanks for stopping by. I'm sure
we'll talk to you later on in the week as

(29:56):
all these trades get consummated and we see a reconcile
to Major League Baseball slate for the end of this season.

Speaker 6 (30:04):
Love it. And by the way, just for the benefit
of factual accuracy, the only Hall of Fame that I'm
in is for the ethics Sollhampton Public Schools, which I
am very proud of, by the way, But that's the
only hall of fame that I'm in, just so clear.

Speaker 3 (30:18):
That's all right. I'm building my own hall of famers
there you go. Hey, it's kind of a big dam
And look, I'm a very discerning kind of guy, you
know me. I hate everybody except you at John Morosi,
where you find well, I mean, he was the first
guy to accept the invitation. The rest of you let

(30:39):
it go to spam on me at John Morosi where
you find him on Twitter.

Speaker 2 (30:43):
J O N j O N M O R O S.

Speaker 3 (30:47):
I keep an eye on everything he's got popping circulating
across the rumor mill for Major League Baseball. And now
let's send it over to our guy, Steve de Seger.
He's going to tell me how far Kyle Schwarzer hit
that home run against the White Sox.

Speaker 7 (30:59):
You know you're talking about Andrew Vaughn of Milwaukee. Sarah
Langstadt to pass along tonight. This guy, since he left
the White Sox for Milwaukee, has twenty one RBIs in
fifteen games with his new team. The record is twenty
four RBIs in your first fifteen games with a new franchise,
and that mark was set one hundred years ago. Milwaukee

(31:19):
beat the Cubs nine to three. Vaughn was six runs
betted in, including a Grand Slam. The Brewers are first
in the NL Central, two games over the Cubs in
the NL East. The Mets started the day a game
and a half up on the Phillies. Phils did win
six to three, at the White Sox Kyle Schwarber with
his thirty seventh home run. The Padres are leading the
Mets in San Diego two to one in the top
of the seventh, and Juan Soto of the Mets has

(31:42):
left the game fouled the ball off his foot. The
injury is called a bruse. Pittsburgh at the Giants tied
one to one in the eighth, a six to one
over Seattle bottom of the fifth, and an Anaheim Angels
lead Texas three to two in the top of the sixth.
Wins for Miami and Houston, wins for Boston and Kansas.
The Royals today designated veteran pitcher Rich Hill for assignment.

(32:04):
Kansas City Tonight did win nine to six over Atlanta.
The Braves Ronald Acuna left with achilles tightness. He is
in a walking boot. The Dodgers with a run top
of the ninth one at Cincinnati five to four.

Speaker 2 (32:15):
Cleveland beat Colorado ten to four.

Speaker 7 (32:17):
The Rockies record now twenty eight and seventy nine. Baltimore's
won five straight after sweeping a doubleheader against bolt Against Toronto,
the first place team in the ALIS, the Yankees won
seven to five over Tampa Bay winning pitcher Max Freed
twelve to four. Detroit beat Arizona twelve two. Bengals defensive
end Trey Hendrickson will report to training camp on Wednesday.

(32:39):
He's been holding out for a new contract. The Jets
signed veteran kicker Nick Folk. Ravens tight end Isaiah Likely
will miss a few weeks after rolling his ankle at
practice in the WNBA, three games wins for Golden State,
Washington and maybe Las Vegas. Tonight, Vegas is leading at
LA seventy six fifty seven with only eight minutes to go.
Cameron did not start, but did return from the torn

(33:02):
acl of over a year ago for the Sparks. While
they were down twenty six to nine by the time
she got in the game, she did hit her first
shot at three. She has three points in ten minutes
off the bench. In women's soccer, Copa America semifinal went
to Brazil tonight on FS one, five to one over Uruguay.
The final against Columbia is Saturday on FS one and

(33:23):
by the way, Fox TV had the Women's Euros and
the final was this past weekend, which England won.

Speaker 3 (33:31):
That drew over one.

Speaker 7 (33:32):
Point three million viewers next final over the weekend. By
the way, the BBC announced for their audience overseas, over
twelve million viewers for England's win.

Speaker 3 (33:42):
Back to you, still marveling at how they were able
to pull that off, Rich. They were the little engine
that wouldn't stop. Yeah, they were a prohibitive favorite along
with Spain to win the thing, but it was not easy.

Speaker 7 (33:55):
I think they lost their first game. It took two
late goals in the quarterfinals and then a penalty kicks win,
and then the semi final they were stopped on three
straight penalty kicks and.

Speaker 3 (34:05):
Still advanced, still advanced at Steve Desager at the News desk.
Rich Ormberger in for Jason Smith, I'm Mike Harmon. You
know that Andrew Vaughn home run highly profitable for one individual,
as we found out on social media. We'll talk about that.
Oh and an x NBA player who tried to pull
a Danny Ocean, or so it would seem. What's that

(34:26):
all about.

Speaker 2 (34:27):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern seven
pm Pacific.

Speaker 3 (34:35):
Nice, you're going out of his way of trying to
infuriate me. See if I'll start screaming at him on air,
now you won't get that. I'll just kill you with
kindness exactly. Welcome back and Jason Smith Show with Me,
Mike Harmon, rich Ormberger.

Speaker 2 (34:50):
In for Jason tonight.

Speaker 3 (34:53):
In theory, mister Smith will be back in the big
chair with me tomorrow night.

Speaker 2 (35:00):
He tuned. We'll see if he.

Speaker 3 (35:01):
Teases his return and what he brought us back as
gifts from his Michigan experience. Maybe hung out with job PALMROSI.
I don't know. I have no idea possible. You never can.

Speaker 5 (35:13):
Recent inductee to the Harmon Institute Hall of Fame.

Speaker 3 (35:16):
No, that's right, really nice, the South Harmon Institute of Technology.
Like in accepted.

Speaker 8 (35:24):
Don't use the acrony no no, no, yeah, yeah. We
smile and we just keep going as we do here
at Fox Sports Radio, no question about it. Rich Oreenberger
in with me, and we're having a blast hanging out
with you all here across our Fox Sports Radio universe.
But one of the things that I wanted to pay

(35:47):
off was there was a bet that was put out
and we saw it across social media. A guy placed
a twenty six thousand dollars bet on a player to
record in any time Grand Slam today because you had
a big slate.

Speaker 3 (36:03):
Wow, minus one thirty were his odds. Well, it paid
out forty six thousand dollars with that von Grand Slam
implied odds fifty six percent. Last year, there were one
hundred and forty six Grand Slams in the approximately one
hundred and eighty day Major League Baseball calendar.

Speaker 4 (36:22):
Wow.

Speaker 5 (36:23):
Yeah, that's a that's a pretty crazy hit on that one.

Speaker 3 (36:27):
Pretty good payout too, And the fact that it's Andrew
Vaughn just makes me smile. You know, there's just something,
I mean, he vanquishes the Cubs, but it's good to see,
you know, a guy get away and perform well. And
it's not just pitchers that we can't get right and
keep around the ballyard, as we talked about with Crochet
and Carlos Rodin with John Paul Morosi, now turning our

(36:51):
attention to the fun and exciting world of the NBA.
Marcus Morris arrested Sunday on a fraud charge. Now what
was it? Apparently arrested at an airport due to a
quote insufficient funds check and now there's the question of
a large amount with a casino debt that had not

(37:16):
been paid to the tune of some two hundred and
fifty thousand dollars. So, just so everybody understands, there's zero
fraud here or whatever crap outlets have said regarding fake
checks or whatever, this is due to an outstanding marker
with a casino. Apparently, if you have over twelve hundred dollars,
they can issue a warrant for your arrest. Absolute insanity.

(37:41):
But yeah, so it was starting to circulate over unpaid
credit by talking about fake checks and payments and trying
to push this away. But boy, once the cat's out
of the bag, man, that is some next level stuff.

Speaker 4 (37:57):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (37:57):
I mean, look, you know, we are well aware that
gambling culture is rife amongst especially NBA players, But but
I'm not just going to limit it limit it to
NBA players because we've heard of, you know, gambling scandals
with baseball in the NFL as well. But it just

(38:20):
feels like there's a culture in the NBA. You hear
it all the time. At the free throw line. Somebody
challenges somebody, Hey, you'll miss the shot, or you know,
ten thousand dollars on this next.

Speaker 4 (38:31):
One, you know what I mean, or whatever it might be.

Speaker 5 (38:33):
No golf trips, you know, Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley famous
for their their golf bets and things like that, you know,
card playing on the planes. I mean, did I see
some of this in the NFL in terms of, you know,
a game of bou Ray in the back of the plane,
you know, or Yuker on my way home from various travels. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,

(38:58):
But like, but does it seem a little bit more
prevalent in certain leagues than others? Yeah, it does, and
I think they're I think there may be a little
bit of a more of a more of a culture
of it in the NBN.

Speaker 4 (39:13):
I'm not sure why. Maybe it's honestly, it's.

Speaker 5 (39:15):
Probably because these guys are constantly on the plane together
and they're they're a limited number of people in a
very confined space. It almost it almost feels like you
kind of need, you need to do something with each
other other than just have conversations and catching about up
about each other's lives.

Speaker 4 (39:35):
You already know everything going on in everybody's life.

Speaker 3 (39:38):
Yeah, so you've been held in custody down in Broward County.
According to the New York Post via TMZ, a couple
of markers one hundred fifteen thousand from the MGM Grand
and one hundred and fifty thousand at the Win Las Vegas.
So two sixty five total bad checks that he didn't
pay back when they didn't cash. So we'll see how

(40:00):
this one plays. But you know, how'd you feel about
pulling a job with about five other guys? We do
a full on reservoir dogs with it. Next, he's Rich
Mornberger in for Jason Smith. As we continue here from
the Fox Sports Radio Studios, turn our attention back into
the National Football League and answer the question about Aaron
Rodgers and
