We got a visit from Rick Buker coming up at
about twenty minutes and the phrase hooka doncicch.
Speaker 4 (00:57):
I'm sure he is going to come up at some
point in our conversation. But big day in the NFL.
Speaker 1 (01:03):
NFL report cards came out for all thirty two teams.
But a little bit on overtime before we get to that. Now,
a few minutes ago We were talking about the different
changes coming to the NFL this year. At the combine,
they're talking about what alterations to make for the twenty
twenty five season. One that's in ink is it's going
to be a electronic first down marker. No more chain
(01:27):
gang coming out moving it so we avoid.
Speaker 4 (01:29):
The ridiculousness of what happened between the Bills and the
Chiefs in the AFC title game, where the official from
the Bill sideline came on signaled first down. Official from
the chief sideline came out and said, no, I'm overruling
you no first down. You know how I could have
solved that by having to do electronically.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
We'll just have the two of them fight.
Speaker 4 (01:48):
That would have been good too.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
We score all of a sudden squaring off here Joe
Rogan's voice suddenly, Oh we're squaring off here.
Speaker 4 (01:54):
In the middle. Now, we're really quick on this, Yeah,
just really quick on this.
Speaker 1 (01:58):
To tell you this was a thing and it wasn't
done right, is that the NFL is responding to it.
If the NFL really thought it was adjudicated correctly, they
would not because this is the Buffalo Bills rule, right,
this is a rule they are putting in strictly so
that doesn't happen again.
Speaker 5 (02:14):
That's too Bottlo Bills rules in like two years though, right,
I mean, come on, yeah.
Speaker 4 (02:18):
Well that's the thing that Hey, Bills are movers and shakers.
Speaker 1 (02:20):
Hey they may not win big games in the playoffs,
but boy, they win the rules of the off season.
Speaker 4 (02:24):
That's the Bills for you.
Speaker 1 (02:26):
But no, but this shows you that they know the
wrong thing was done and we have to fix this
so it doesn't happen again. This is the NFL saying, yeah,
that wasn't done the right way and we need to
fix it because if it was, you know, the NFL,
they don't want to admit they're wrong about anything. So
the fact they're doing this tells you, yeah, we know
that was a mistake. And they move on to now
(02:47):
wanting to correct the mistake of overtime because now this
is a potential change, not a real change yet, but
a potential change that they're going to adjust overtime again
from where it sits currently, which is both tam get
the football in the regular season unless a team scores
a touchdown when they get the ball the first time.
Because what the NFL has seen in their data the
(03:08):
last few years is boy, the team that gets the
football first is winning like nearly sixty percent of the time.
Uh yeah, okay, so we're gonna change this is This
is where I'm at on this mic, because I really
why has the NFL made overtime so hard? I don't
understand why they've made it just so hard. They've made
(03:30):
it way harder than it needs to be. It should
have been right away. Both teams get the football no
matter what, or we're playing ten minutes, and after ten minutes,
if it's a tie, it's a tie, right, Like they've
made it so complicated with Okay, now each team gets
the football right now. If a team kicks a field goal,
the other team gets the ball. No, no, now it's
if a team scores a touchdown, the other team still
(03:51):
gets the football. Like why are we doing this? Like
they just they're making it so much harder than it
needs to be. It's so easy. Hey, both teams get
the football once, no matter what, or we play ten minutes.
If it's a tie to tie, it's really easy. It's
really really easy. Yet this is where we're still at.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
Yeah, I've always been an advocate.
Speaker 5 (04:09):
I had no problem when it was sudden death, make
a stop until guys started bombing in sixty yard field
goals with regularity. Over Yeah, then it became a thing.
Then it becomes a thing. But you know where I'm
at now is give me the ten minutes. We play
ten minutes, right, you're going to the fourth quarter, you're tied.
That's the simulation that we're running here, and you play
(04:30):
it out from there, and then we don't have to
worry about all this other stuff of getting the.
Speaker 3 (04:36):
Balls, like, oh, you give up a touchdown.
Speaker 5 (04:38):
No, the game should be over and fighting in every
two years we have to revisit this in sixty percent?
Is that overwhelmed? I mean, yes, that's that's an edge.
That's not a grossly overwhelming edge to say that you
should suspend what you're doing, is it. I mean, it's
an advantage, but it's not like the tush push that
(05:00):
everybody's complaining about that most teams can't run effectively, and.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
Hey, we all suck at it. We should ban it.
Speaker 5 (05:10):
I know only the Packers brought it up, but it
only takes one So yeah, it's for the overtime rules.
I just like us to get to a point where
we can agree that this is done. It's like the
college football playoff. We know it's going to sixteen.
Speaker 3 (05:25):
Just get there. Okay, let's just set there and just
stop playing around with it.
Speaker 1 (05:32):
So again, we'll have more on these big NFL champ
potential changes coming up throughout the show tonight, as we
do with the NFL report Cards, which came out earlier today,
which really it's becoming one of the fast becoming one
of my favorite NFL days of the year, because this
is a day where teams take surveys, anonymous surveys about
how they feel their team is being run. And it's
(05:54):
everything from how they feel about their owner, to how
they feel about the locker room, to how they feel
about how the team treats families, to how they feel
about how the team, how the food is. It's a
huge thing and it's really successful and it's big headlines
every year when it comes out, because we find out
what teams have the worst owners jets, what teams have
(06:14):
the best systems in place to make players happy. The
Dolphins at the top, the Vikings at the top. Now
this is good not because it portends to success on
the field, because look, hey, the Dolphins are the top
second year in a row Dolphins. Dolphins might be looking
for a new head coach. Do everything this offseason right
or next next offseason. So it's not like all of
a sudden it portends success for the team. It means like, hey,
(06:38):
you're suddenly going to start winning. You start doing all
these things the right way. If your weight room is good,
and your training table is good, and and and you
treat families right. But what the best thing about it
is that it's better for the players. It's a better
experience for the players. It makes a better experience.
Speaker 4 (06:55):
For the team. If your weight room gets an F minus,
guess what.
Speaker 1 (06:58):
The owner doesn't like that, but you know to get
Dona doesn't like getting called you suck as an owner.
Speaker 4 (07:03):
You had an F minus weight room.
Speaker 1 (07:04):
What happens the team gets a new weight room or
they they because it doesn't cost hundreds of.
Speaker 4 (07:09):
Millions of dollars.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
It's oh, I can spend one hundred grand to update
the weight room and make it a great place for everybody, right, and.
Speaker 5 (07:15):
Then gym's all over the place that will donate the
equipment and time and facility just to have the association.
Speaker 1 (07:23):
Yeah, it's an easy fix and usually this stuff is fixed,
and many teams go from the bottom one year to
the top the next year because strictly because nobody likes
to be told and given a bad grade at stuff.
This is a black and white thing. When you're told
you suck at this, your team sucks at this.
Speaker 4 (07:39):
Right.
Speaker 1 (07:39):
So that's why it's great for the players. They come
to work happier, right, They come to work with less stress.
And I always say from coaching as long as I have,
there's not a lot of tenants that I subscribe to
because every team is different, individuals are different. You got
to find a way to coach different kids to come together.
But the one thing I will say from the beginning
to end is a happy player is a good player.
(08:00):
And no matter what, and if your player is unhappy
because they're they're coming to work, but your team doesn't
have childcare, or your team doesn't have isn't great for families.
You're not going to be as happy doing your job,
and that's going to leak into everything you do when
it comes to your preparation, your execution, your overall level
of happiness. Maybe you want to leave, but if you
come to work and hey, they have great child care,
(08:22):
you don't have to worry about stuff.
Speaker 4 (08:23):
Everybody can work.
Speaker 1 (08:24):
You can work, your wife can work, your kids get
you know, have great experience, not not having to jump
around and being shuttle to relatives or babysitters all the time.
Or Hey, we're really good with families coming and watching
the game and having seats for them and having great
experience for them.
Speaker 4 (08:39):
Like that's a thing, man, and that that.
Speaker 1 (08:41):
Is one thing that helps when you want to recruit
players and free agency. Hey, look at the grades we're getting.
You know, you can come here and when you know,
you know all the ex's and o's right. You know
our coach, you know our quarterback, you know our offensive
line is terrific. You know all this stuff. But let
me show you what we're doing, what we do for families.
Let me show what the locker room is like. Let
me show you what the food is like. That stuff
that really cuts through to a player. So it's good
(09:03):
for the players because they get a chance to, hey,
be happier when they come to work and get the
amenities they deserve because all by the way, they're putting
their bodies on the bleeping line and are going to
have a lesser quality of life when it's done that, Hey,
this is a better thing, and it's a great tool
in free agency to show people this is how we
do it here. You'd be happy to come here. Some
people are happier to stay because I know my family
(09:26):
will get treated right here.
Speaker 4 (09:27):
I could go to this other team, but I don't know.
Speaker 1 (09:30):
I don't know what they do as far as when
it comes to treating families. I don't know what the
workout is. I don't know what the food is. Right,
whatever it is, this is better for them on those
two fronts. And that's why this is such a big deal.
It's so good that this is done.
Speaker 5 (09:43):
Yeah, when you go through all the different categories for
those that haven't seen it, ownership, head coach, travel, strength coaches,
weight room, training staff, training room, locker room, dietitian nutritionness, food,
dining area, and then the treatment of family. You got
a lot of categories, a lot of notes. Some notes
come out of the survey talking about different components. For
(10:03):
the Patriots. Part of it is the team plane that
you still have ashtrays on the armrests. Anybody, anybody, what
was the last time you saw one of those on
a commercial airliner When you were still you know, I
guess flying domestically. Let's leave it there, but go on down.
It just also shows the considerations aren't always just about
(10:26):
a paycheck. We get into the stuff about all right,
you saved x percentage off a state tax here and
there a few opportunities for those, But when you're looking
at relocating a family, some of the costs aren't just
in your wallet, you know, as you say when you
talk about childcare, when you talk about facilities, the weight room,
(10:47):
how do you get the how do you have low
grades on this in twenty twenty five is just laughable
to me. The treatment of families is really what I'd
want to dig deeper into. The Rams got a D
and the Eagles got a C minus.
Speaker 3 (11:02):
As did the Steelers.
Speaker 5 (11:03):
Steelers is always a welcoming place when I used to
go up there for train get I mean they got
the same jets or same jets, same.
Speaker 3 (11:09):
Grade or lower as the jets. Right, So we can
laugh about the jets.
Speaker 5 (11:13):
But some of the organizations that are held up as
standards and hallmarks of and pillars of this community of
thirty two are failing. The Bengals Joe Burrows holding this
up like it's a giant newspaper going.
Speaker 3 (11:27):
Say, c what did I tell you? So all of
it to say, and they got.
Speaker 5 (11:33):
Some great marks in a couple of the categories. Did
the Bengals and and some in the other Remember all
the money? Uh, well, I want to make sure my
dollars on the field, right instead of Woody Johnson likes
to keep the money on the field.
Speaker 3 (11:47):
Keep the money on the field.
Speaker 5 (11:49):
But all of it to say, it's a nice snapshot
of where you're at and some of the the quick
one liners that made their way out into the public.
And look, coaching changes happen, but it's a snapshot in
time when these are taken of of where guys are.
And maybe part of it is just they're having a
terrible season. Maybe you've got certain percentage of players that
(12:13):
just went to the elite colleges, so it's a step
down depending on where they got drafted and where they're playing. Mike,
But did we really need a survey to let us
know where the Jets are?
Speaker 6 (12:23):
No?
Speaker 5 (12:25):
I mean the ownership grade really took me by surprise.
Speaker 3 (12:28):
I gotta say that.
Speaker 1 (12:29):
You were surprised at Woody Johnson got an F I
was come but the guy's the worst owner in the end.
Speaker 5 (12:33):
No, but now everybody knows. How about we got Woody
with an F? We got guy no, no, no, he just.
Speaker 4 (12:40):
Got an F.
Speaker 3 (12:41):
Other people.
Speaker 4 (12:43):
No, no, no, be right, be right, just an F.
Speaker 2 (12:49):
Spectacularly.
Speaker 5 (12:50):
Oh you gotta fail spectacularly, as we always say, Uh
you bid Well got a D minus.
Speaker 1 (12:55):
Craft got a D that looks like an A compared
to Woody Johnson.
Speaker 3 (13:00):
That's like an A.
Speaker 1 (13:00):
Can you imagine these guys just standing around like an
odors meeting, going, hey, what you get?
Speaker 4 (13:04):
I got an A?
Speaker 3 (13:05):
I got a D.
Speaker 4 (13:06):
I got an F.
Speaker 5 (13:07):
Yeah, but but I take this all with a grain
of salt, right, the Buccaneers, the Glaziers get a D plus. Okay, fine,
and then because look Jay Glazer tells us all the
time of the incoming he gets from the Glaziers work
in Europe. But the Chiefs had a C minus for
yeah oh yeah, yeah yeah.
Speaker 3 (13:26):
So where's the Bears got an A minus? Like what
are we doing here? Really?
Speaker 1 (13:32):
Exit out about a Fresco exit Swallen Dome. We got
more on the NFL report cards coming out. I mean,
we had so many great stories about F minuses.
Speaker 4 (13:39):
I mean we had come on we had F minuses.
Speaker 1 (13:42):
Even that makes the Jets look okay at least wasn't
an F minus.
Speaker 4 (13:45):
But coming up next, Rick Bucker stops by.
Speaker 1 (13:47):
We talk about the latest drama involving Luka Doncic, the
reaction to the greatest story in the NBA going on
this season, and why all of a sudden, players doing
podcasts is suddenly frowned upon. Rick Bucker, Fox Sports One Insider,
straight Ahead, Jason, and Mike Fox Sports Radio.

with us now in the hotline. Nobody better Fox Sports
(16:38):
One NBA Insider EXTRAORDINAIIR, host of the On the Ball podcast.
He's on Twitter at Rick Buker. It is Rick Buker. Rick,
what's happening, man?
Speaker 6 (16:48):
Gentlemen? Just landed and got to la I'm gonna be
doing a little TV the next few days. So you
caught me in a good time. I've been prepping like
mad and so I'm just full full of knowledge. Okay,
let's uncork it all right.
Speaker 1 (17:05):
So you're going to go to a hookah bar with
Luca Right after that report today the Mavericks were upset
it was too much drinking and too much hookah that
that's why they wanted to trade Luka doncic Well.
Speaker 6 (17:15):
I will say this honestly that the from the time
that he was that he entered the draft, if you
look at what he accomplished in Europe, he should have
been the consensus number one pick, no questions asked. And
it's to a certain extent we proved that he should
(17:36):
have been that anyway. But one of the reasons that
he wasn't was concerned about his body and about his lifestyle.
That's legit, and that's been going on for quite some time.
And so he has obviously succeeded and exceeded where he
was drafted in spite of all that. But I understand
(17:59):
what doubt. What I don't understand is why the Dallas
mavers are putting this out there now, like, you know what,
let it unfold. If if he breaks down, if he
never gets in shape, then then then you can go
ahead and say, yeah, now you know why we didn't.
We didn't re up him. But putting it out now
just feels really defensive, like.
Speaker 1 (18:24):
He had a triple double last night. Like I think
it's easy to say, why are we coming out with
U today? Because boy, the trade looks even worse after
he just put up a triple double against us last night.
Speaker 6 (18:33):
No, yeah, no question. Now, the flip side of it is,
we're going to be really fair. We're going to be fair.
We didn't get to see the MAVs at full strength
with Anthony Davis and Derek Lively and all of that,
and and to be honest with you, that game was
a lot closer than I expected it to be all
things considered. I thought that with it being such a
(18:53):
big game for Luca, the way the Lakers have been
playing of late at home where the Dallas Mavericks are
and being shorthanded, I thought it was going to be
a blood bath, and it was not. Luca obviously continues
to get more comfortable and show what he's capable of.
(19:15):
But if we're going to really measure this. I know
we want to jump into immediately. God, that was an
awful trade. How could they possibly do that? The measure
of this is not going to be this week, or
next month or even ultimately, you know, short of either
the Dallas Mavericks or Lakers winning a championship this year.
(19:39):
It's not how we're going to measure this trade. It
really comes down to should they have Should they have
invested five years and three hundred and forty five million
dollars in Luka Dacs. It's not what he's done, it's
what he's going to do, because that's what prompted them
to make this. And let's be clear, what prompted ownership
(20:00):
to make this move. Yeah, Nico stood up there and
he's taken all the all the arrows. But the reality
is he didn't even latterly go to the Adels and
Dumont and say, hey, you know what, I really think
we need to get Luca the hell.
Speaker 4 (20:14):
Out of here.
Speaker 6 (20:16):
The ownership came to him. The ownership came to him
and said three hundred and forty five million for five years?
What what? We really don't want to pay him that? What?
What could we get and when Anthony Davis was on
the table, ownership said pull that trigger. So I just
(20:38):
I know where where we are in terms of, you know,
Nico taking all of the hits and with Anthony Davis
on the shelf that the and the way the Lakers
are playing that it looks it looks really bad. Now,
there's no question about it. I'm just not going to
jump out there and say right as of this moment
(21:00):
that the Dallas Mavericks made a cross on mistake, because
I know why they made it, and we'll see whether
that was the right bet or not. Especially I mean,
you know, we're gonna talk about Joel EMBII, We're gonna
talk about Zion Williamson, We'll talk about any number of
guys the teams. We can talk about Paul George, I mean,
all of the names that we may eventually get to.
I'll put it like this, The Los Angeles Clippers decided
(21:25):
not to pay Paul George. The Philadelphia seventy six ers
decided to pay Paul George. Now, I understand Luca has
done way more than Paul George has done. He's done
more than Joel Embiid has done. But do those teams
look at who those guys have been and regret that
they gave them max contracts. That's the decision that Dallas
(21:49):
Mavericks made. They thought, for all Luca has done, his
future looks a lot more like Joel Embiid's than it
does Curries or Lebron James. And that's why they moved on.
Speaker 3 (22:03):
All right.
Speaker 5 (22:04):
Fun with numbers last night spread with seven and a
half final score one seven ninety nine.
Speaker 3 (22:09):
May I mean in Vegas the other.
Speaker 6 (22:13):
What are you saying? What are you thinking?
Speaker 3 (22:15):
I'm just smiling. You know, what are you gonna again?
Speaker 5 (22:19):
Podcast p I'm not doing this anymore? Has a great
game tonight in another loss, two and a half games
behind the WOLFL Chicago Bulls for that tenth slot in
the playoffs. Can he get serious enough now to lead
them into the back end of the play in tournament.
Speaker 6 (22:38):
I had no I had no idea. Maybe you guys
can have a better sense of this. I had no
idea that podcasts were that exhausted.
Speaker 2 (22:46):
I did have no.
Speaker 3 (22:50):
Deep dive research.
Speaker 1 (22:51):
Rick.
Speaker 5 (22:52):
I know you said you were you were getting into
some deep stuff for TV. Maybe maybe Paul George is
learning from your acumen.
Speaker 6 (22:59):
I don't know, Oh my god, it is isn't the
cutest thing? I mean, this is this is really night
next level of Lebron going dark on social media or whatever.
Like you know what, I just I'm really gonna focus now.
I'm gonna now that we've lost eight games. Now now
(23:20):
I'm gonna focus in now. I'm gonna make my job
a priority before you know, yeah, things to do. But man,
eight games, we lost eight games in a row. You
know what I think? To give up the I can't
even say it was a strange face.
Speaker 1 (23:37):
I mean, it's not just it's not just giving up
the podcast. It's him saying, I got to get my
body right now.
Speaker 4 (23:43):
It's game sixty. What are you getting in shape?
Speaker 3 (23:45):
Now?
Speaker 4 (23:45):
I would sit sixty games into the season.
Speaker 6 (23:49):
And what's he doing in front of that microphone that
he can't get that is destroying his body? But what
is it?
Speaker 3 (24:00):
You know what?
Speaker 6 (24:00):
I blame Dwight Howard? What is it with guys? Just
Dwight Howard is like like schlep Rock, He's just his
He comes on the podcast, Paul George's podcast. Because if
you read a little deeper, if you read a little
deeper into his reasons for giving up the podcast. He's like,
you know what, I just can't be with my regular
guys doing the podcast and man, and so this one
(24:23):
with Dwight, this is the last one he did a
podcast with Dwight, and he decided, I can't do podcasts anymore.
It's just too much for me. I kind of I'm
gonna have to try to do my job. It's about it.
It's just you can't make this stuff up. Like, here's
the question that I have. Here's the question that I have.
Who does do these guys when they when they say
(24:44):
things like this, is there somebody in their circle that
they run it by and they know you do. That's
a good idea. I think that'll play right Or do
they just who? Do they not have a sounding board
to say, Hey, Paul, that doesn't like you can stop
doing the podcast or whatever. But maybe let's not let's
(25:04):
just not advertise it. Let's just let's not just let's
just not do it and if somebody asks then we'll
tell them. But otherwise, this idea of like, hey, you know,
I've been really disappointing this season. We've lost eight in
a row. I'm gonna make the ultimate sacrifice.
Speaker 1 (25:22):
But Rick I like he made the announcement no more
podcast on the podcast, like, hey, I.
Speaker 4 (25:27):
Want to be we're not going to do it. Yeah,
I want to let you know on the podcast we're
not doing it. I mean, that's it's it's great, it's great.
Speaker 6 (25:34):
Can't make the stuff. You can't make this stuff up. Mom, No,
it's as you said, you advertised, you said the best
story in the NBA this year. That's not it, because no, no.
Speaker 3 (25:42):
This is it.
Speaker 1 (25:43):
Because I'm going to say this is the best story
in the NBA this year, and you're gonna say you
are one hundred percent correct.
Speaker 3 (25:49):
Are you ready? You're ready for this?
Speaker 1 (25:52):
Okay, the look wait a minute, now, come on, you're
on board with me with the Knicks.
Speaker 4 (25:56):
You were one of those originators.
Speaker 6 (25:58):
Boy, you were. You're hanging that on your mantle, argues
that is at the top of the trophy case right
there the.
Speaker 4 (26:05):
Day Rick Peter agreed with me.
Speaker 1 (26:07):
Uh, the best story in the NBA this season, without
a doubt.
Speaker 4 (26:12):
The Detroit Pistons.
Speaker 6 (26:14):
Ooh ooh, not bad, not bad? Yeah, No, I mean
the best story. I would say, the biggest feel good story.
Speaker 1 (26:24):
Well that's what I mean, That's what I mean, the best,
the best but not the best team. I mean the
best story in the NBA. Hey, look at what they've
come back from.
Speaker 3 (26:31):
I mean, j D.
Speaker 1 (26:32):
Bickerstaff should be a shoe in as Coach of the
Year in the NBA. Their young talented dude without Jade
and Ivy who's still hurt. Like they beat them, they
boat race the Celtics tonight by twenty Like this is
a great, great story.
Speaker 6 (26:45):
Yeah, yeah, I agree one thousand percent. And I was
around those guys earlier, earlier in the year, and uh
and I like everything that they are about. I'm I'm
a huge fan of Kate Cunningham. I love the way
he plays his leadership. I think they've been really dashed
in the pieces that they've they've they've put around him.
(27:07):
I'm with you. I'm with you one hundred percent. I
love this. I love this story. I love what they've
put together. I don't you know, what I really don't
understand is why Ty Jerome got to be taking shots
at JB. Bicker Staff. And is that really smart at
this point considering what bicker Staff did, Like, I feel
like bicker Staff maybe Ty doesn't know what the Cleveland
(27:30):
Cavaliers were before JD. Got there because he transformed them
and and now he's doing the same thing in Detroit.
And I don't know if you guys saw the comments,
but Ty was somebody asked him, like, why the Cabs
are having the season that they're having and and he said,
the coaching staff, right.
Speaker 4 (27:50):
That's the biggest thing, was the coaching.
Speaker 6 (27:52):
Staff, right. And I just and I feel like, you
know what, Kenny Atkinson has done a tremendous job. And
sometimes you have like a Steve Kerr come in and
springboards off of what Mark Jackson started. But you got
to kick Mark Jackson to the curve. I mean, he
(28:12):
built the foundation. And I would say that JB has
done the exact same thing. He did the exact same
thing in Cleveland as Mark did with Golden State. I
don't know if Kenny's the guy to take it to
the next level and JB's doing that exact same thing
in Detroit. So and it also just feels good, doesn't it.
Like Detroit. I mean, not a whole lot else going
(28:35):
on there. It feels like Detroit is basketball royalty that
has been on hard really hard times or seemingly, you know,
we had that blip when Blake Griffin kind of swung
through there, and other than that, it's pretty it's been
pretty desolate. So I'm with you. I love what I
(28:55):
don't know what it means in terms of what they're
going to do this season, but I love that they're
on the other.
Speaker 1 (29:01):
I told you you'd agree with me, I say, I
told you, and I get to see there you go.
Speaker 3 (29:05):
But it's Detroit battles to cover?
Speaker 6 (29:08):
What are we batting to for?
Speaker 3 (29:10):
What?
Speaker 1 (29:13):
I think it's Uh, it's Luca from three point range.
I think we're two for like the last forty seven
or something like.
Speaker 6 (29:19):
Look at look at you, Look at you.
Speaker 4 (29:24):
Yeah, he's on Twitter at Rick Bucker. That is at
Rick Bucker latest on the Ball podcast for you. But
you got a bunch on Jimmy Buckets on the new podcast.
Speaker 6 (29:33):
Yeah, I just uh, it's look. I thought when his
name came up that he made the most sense in
terms of what they needed, and but it has made
even more sense now that he's there, because it got
me looking at a couple of things that I hadn't
really paid attention to, one of them being the warriors
inability to get to the free throw line and the
(29:56):
inability to shoot to make free throws dead laugh in
free throw percentage, and they were like twenty they're twenty
third now, and I can only imagine where they were.
They had to be like twenty six, twenty seventh before
Jimmy got there. Because Jimmy is averaging nine free throws
(30:17):
the game and shooting and making them at a ninety
percent clip. And you know, we don't talk a whole
lot about free throws and what they mean, but with
an older team with three guys in their thirties, that's
like built in rest and foul trouble for the opposing team,
and in fills a void that the Warriors did not have.
(30:39):
Is also his ability to finish around the rim and
his willingness to shoot around the rim has added something
that they didn't have with Wiggins. As athletic as Wiggins is,
he was only shooting them. He was only taking about
fourteen percent of his shots at the rim, and Jimmy's
Jimmy's a third more than a third of his shots
(31:00):
the rim. So and then there's just the presidence and
the swagger, Like I've been around that team, and Wiggins is,
as you know, quiet as a church mouse, and Jimmy
obviously is not and he's bought. He's brought some badly
needed bravado to that team. When Jimmy's unhappy, you do
(31:20):
not want Jimmy. But when Jimmy is feeling good and
he's Hemmy buckets, then you you've got something. And I
don't know that it means that the Warriors are going
to contend for a title, but he is certainly an
upgrade and I would expect, I expect them to be
a playoff team now, and I would not have said
that prior to Jimmy come into town.
Speaker 4 (31:41):

great stuff on the Sixers, awesome awesome stuff. Time out
to find out what's trending in the wide world of
sports from Monzi milanios Manzi, what do you got for us?
Speaker 7 (32:12):
All right, fellas, So, the NFL Combine is starting tomorrow,
and Adam Schefter just tweeted for ESPN the test today
revealed that the potential number one pick out of Penn State,
their edge rusher Abdul Carter, has a stress reaction in
his right foot. They're going to decide soon whether he
should have surgery.
Speaker 2 (32:31):
I guess there's mixed.
Speaker 7 (32:32):
Opinions on whether he should have surgery.
Speaker 2 (32:34):
But that is the.
Speaker 7 (32:35):
Latest coming out of ESPN Adam Schefter other NFL usually
you may have missed earlier today, forty nine Ers GM
John Lynch says that they are honoring wide receiver Deebo
Samuel's trade request. He also said that they have had
contract talks with quarterback brock Perty. The Packers have had
talks about trading cornerback Jaire Alexander, and the Saints say
that Derek Carr will be QB one to start the
(32:57):
twenty twenty five season. One game is still going on
in the NBA. If you're missing it, you're not missing
much because the Rockets are crushing the Spurs one oh
five to eighty four with about eight minutes to go
in the game. The Pistons have now won eight in
a row. They defeated the Celtics one seventeen to ninety seven,
snapping Boston's six game winning streak. The Knicks top the
seventy six Ers one ten to one oh five. Philadelphia
(33:18):
has lost nine in a row. The Heat crushed the
Hawks one thirty one to one oh nine. The thunder
were down eighteen points at one point. They came back
to beat the Nets one twenty nine to one twenty one.
The Clippers they outscored the Bulls won twenty two to
one seventeen. And James Harden is famous everywhere, so if
you're wondering what it sounds like for Korean fans, here
you go, Jame, So thank you to click for that one.
(33:53):
And the Kings just took down the Jass one eighteen
to one oh one was the final.
Speaker 4 (33:58):
That was a broadcast that was guys in their living.
Speaker 7 (34:01):
So the Clippers Twitter page posted it and it looked
like they were doing it for work, right Frossburg. But
it did also look like they were at home, and
both can be true.
Speaker 4 (34:11):
You know what I'm saying, Like it was work.
Speaker 2 (34:12):
But I think both can be true.
Speaker 7 (34:14):
The last came in men's college hoops just wrapped up
and no well just wrapped up sort of a couple
of seconds ago. Number twenty five BYU did beat Arizona
State ninety one to eighty one. Saint John's seventh Branks
Saint John's defeated Butler seventy six to seventy. Saint John's
has clinched a share of the Big East regular season
title for the first time since nineteen ninety two. And
(34:36):
on the ice, the Jets, The Jets have won eleven
in a row.
Speaker 4 (34:39):
The Jets, look out the je Jets.
Speaker 3 (34:41):
Eleven in a row.
Speaker 7 (34:42):
They outscored the Senator of Sport of one.
Speaker 3 (34:43):
Back to you guys, thanks a bunch Mons.
Speaker 1 (34:45):
Yes, The Jason Smith Show with Mikey Carmen Love from
the tire Raq dot Com Studios coming up next.
Speaker 4 (34:52):
We'll get into that breaking story Monts.
Speaker 1 (34:53):
He talked about potential number one pick, maybe not anymore.
Speaker 4 (34:58):
That's next right here, Jason.
Speaker 2 (34:59):
I might be sure to catch live editions of The
Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern,
seven pm Pacific, Fox.
Speaker 1 (35:09):
Sports Radio The Jason Smith Show with my bes friend
Mike Harmon. Yeah, livethetirerack dot Com Studios. Big Story Monte
Belangos brought it to us a few minutes ago. According
to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Abdul Carter, who could be the
number one overall pick in the NFL draft on the
(35:30):
eve of the NFL combine Test, revealed today that he
has a stress reaction in his right foot. He's got
to decide soon whether to have surgery or not. There
are mixed opinions whether or not he needs it. Two options,
according to Adam Schefter, are he could have the preemptive surgery,
be back in about eight weeks, or he bypasses a surgery,
(35:52):
has his pro day and.
Speaker 4 (35:53):
Proves the NFL teams he doesn't need it.
Speaker 1 (35:56):
This now makes things a little bit more interesting when
it comes to the NFL draft. Now, the good news
is for Abdul Carter, it doesn't seem like his career
will be affected. If the options are he can have
the surgery or not. I think I feel pretty good
about it. And if he does have the surgery, he's
back in eight weeks, that's not going to be a
big deal. What is a big deal is that in
(36:17):
eight weeks you're having the NFL Draft, and okay, are
we taking abdual Carter number one, are we not? You know, yes,
he could have a great career. There's a little bit
out there now where you can see an excuse made
for the Titans at number one to not take him.
Speaker 4 (36:32):
Right.
Speaker 1 (36:32):
But here's what I come down on on the number
one overall pick. Carter's a great player, right, He's a
terrific player. Travis Hunter gives you an identity. Not only
is he the best player in the draft, but he
gives you a superstar. He comes in as a superstar.
You can sell his jersey, he will do commercials, he
(36:53):
will be the Tennessee Titans. Abdul Carter is great. He'll
be a defensive lineman. Right, He'll be a star defensive
linean and one of many NFL star defensive linemans in
the league. Not saying it doesn't mean he's not a
great player. But if you're Tennessee, you need stars, man.
You don't get stars showing up playing there. Every team
would fall over themselves say we got a superstar. We
got a guy coming into the league as a superstar
(37:16):
that's not a quarterback like Travis Hunter.
Speaker 4 (37:19):
Is that dude?
Speaker 1 (37:20):
Like he's gonna be a He's a great cornerback, and
he's gonna be able to play offense as well. Like
he comes in and kids are gonna be wearing his
jersey eight minutes after you take Take.
Speaker 4 (37:29):
Him number one overall in the draft.
Speaker 1 (37:31):
Like, I don't, I can't believe it's that it's it's
even that much of a question. Yeah, you take you
take Travis Hunter number one, because the other guys are
great players.
Speaker 4 (37:40):
But he gives you a super he's he gives you
an identity. I don't get why it's even a debate.
Speaker 5 (37:46):
Well, because you get two hundred and fifty million dollars
or something like that out of the TV National deal
and move on from there. You know, the extra money
from Jersey sales and and goodwill is all fine and good.
Talking about a guy who I guess it's just how
do you grade the edges, because there are a bunch
of them in this draft? Right, you look at most
(38:07):
mock drafts, you got three, maybe four in the top twelve,
with Carter being up there the odds before they were
pulled and justin and I conferring, Todd Furman putting it
out there, Hey he's removed from those considerations, right, Cameron
Ward at minus one p forty. Carter was second at
plus one seventy five, and then one hundred at plus
(38:28):
five point fifty. I guess for Hunter, the question becomes
is he a dominant player at either of those positions?
That's what the scouts have to decide.
Speaker 3 (38:38):
Right.
Speaker 5 (38:38):
It's a cool story, it's a great story. It was
great at the collegiate level. But is he going to
be relegated to one side of the ball or the other?
And is he elite at either in the pros. I'll
leave that to the thirty two war rooms to play
that out as it were. To your point, yeah, I
mean it's always good to get someone that moves the
needle in goodwill and to get the fan excited. But
(39:01):
this game, you know what gets him even more excited?
Speaker 3 (39:03):
Winning you no good?
Speaker 1 (39:08):
Then you go yeah, no no, And it's it's not
about that he's not a good player. It's just I
could take it the really good defensive lineman, or I
can take a once in a generation cornerback who can
play wide receiver, who won the Heisman Trophy that gives
my team an identity, relevancy and attention.
Speaker 4 (39:24):
Ah yeah, if it's all, if it's if.
Speaker 1 (39:26):
It's all even even up between that, I'm gonna take
that guy. I mean, I I really, I'm not gonna
turn I'm not gonna thumb my nose a drafting a
guy who's gonna be the identity of my team and
be the superstar and say this is who we are.
I'll take that guy if it's if everything is equal,
and it seems like that's what it is.
Speaker 5 (39:42):
Well, but that but that's the question I ask. Is
he destined to be a superstar on either side of
the ball at the pro level? There seems to be
some debate about that. Well, it's gonna be debate for everybody. No, no, no,
But remember's one of those guys that they say and
obviously this foot injury obviously casts some doubt in there.
But for him, it's been all right, just a matter
of what uniform he's wearing, he's gonna be a plug
(40:03):
and play, decade long terrorizer of offenses. Whereas with Travis Hunter,
I mean, depending on the day, you get reports of yeah,
we've got him on the board as a wide receiver.
Now no, no, we see him more as a quarterback. It's like, okay,
what are we doing?
Speaker 1 (40:19):
Like you get two but remember, you get two players,
you get what's supposed to be what in theory is
a shutdown corner because a guy wouldn't be this high
and the draft he wasn't that good, and you get
a slot receiver, like, I mean, how would you not
want that for you?
Speaker 4 (40:32):
I don't understand.
Speaker 5 (40:34):
I don't know how many dens are gonna trust the
fact that they had the competency to run him out appropriately.
Speaker 3 (40:41):
Right.
Speaker 5 (40:41):
Dion was was a whole other world. Brian Jordan had
a good run. But to think that, you know, he's
this transcendent guy. I like it in theory and I
hope it works, but I understand the reticence.
Speaker 1 (40:54):
Exit out about a Fresca exit Swallen Dome, Jason Smith
Mike Carmon live from the tiraq dot Com Student We
got more NFL coming up next, as it was report
card day, and just like in school, for some teams,
it was great for for others, yeah, not so much.
Speaker 4 (41:10):
That's next right here, Jason and Mike fuck
