a big titanic story in college football today.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
We now know.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
Who everybody likes and who they may like more than others.
The Associated Press preseason pol Is out Syracuse number one,
Northwestern number two. Mike Harmon analysis, You got gout, you
got senteled. What's the college football equivalent of that?
Speaker 4 (01:32):
I mean, look, I'd love to live in that universe,
whatever that alternate earth is, but I'm a realist. Or
pick sixteenth out of eighteen teams in the Big Ten. Okay, sorry,
but all right, but that's right, but it's a big conference.
Trevor Simeon signed a deal with the Titans today, so
we got to promote that or they're going to say
Trevor Simeon signed to go back and play in that year.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
He's you got one.
Speaker 4 (01:52):
More year left after a decade long career in the
National Football League. Yeah, he's not. Hey, you know, Trevor
can buy for us. He can buy for us on
Friday at the at the store.
Speaker 1 (02:04):
I just give just give him money. He'll get paps,
blue paps, flu ribbin for us. Last week was great. Yeah, yeah,
the peels bar bottles. Oh yeah, sure, we're good. Seven dollars,
We're good, honey.
Speaker 4 (02:13):
Good for him, still in the league, still finding his
way back, even if he's just a camp arm for
a couple of weeks. But yeah, that's the that's the
only thing we got going for us right now, is
putting that that kind of thing out because the AP
twenty five does not include US, No.
Speaker 1 (02:28):
No, the top three or top four. Rather, the AP
twenty five Texas is number one, twenty five votes, Penn
State number two, so it was close. It wasn't Texas
number one, but no, it's Texas number one, Penn State
right behind them with twenty three first place votes. Then
it's Ohio State and Clemson, and of course we have
we get Texas Ohio State week one, so that's gonna
be real.
Speaker 4 (02:48):
Well, we get three games right off of that. First
we get game right if Florida State is any good?
Like it sounds great, but it's Florida State.
Speaker 2 (02:56):
Really any good? All right?
Speaker 4 (02:58):
Let's say I was going to the Miami LSU Clemson.
Yeah yeah, okay, all right, all right, find top ten?
Speaker 1 (03:05):
Yeah game no, we got We had a great slate
week one, which is awesome, right, which is part of
what we're gonna get now with a with an expanded
playoff twelve soon to be sixteen teams. Now, let me
just say this first thing, with Texas being number one
of course, all the interest in arch Manning. Is he
gonna stay for one year? Is he gonna go? How
good is Texas really gonna be? First time preseason number
(03:26):
one in the Ape pole. Let me just say this,
as far as Texas goes, it's nice, Right, it's nice.
But honestly, when it comes to the top twenty five
pole and you're talking about teams are number one, fans
are gonna have to find a new thing to argue about, right,
because we once this list came out, all I saw
on social media was I can't believe that LSU is
(03:46):
not ranked higher than nine. How is South Carolina not
in the top ten? Why is Michigan not the top?
I'm like, okay, I get it because it used to
be in olden times. And by that I mean, you know,
going way back to when the college football playoff was,
you know, was less than twelve teams.
Speaker 4 (04:04):
It was about where you were because hey, where you
started preseason.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
If you kept winning and other teams won, you didn't
want to lose too many games because getting back in
and getting up high is very difficult. Right If you
think you were a top ten team but you're starting
off at number seventeen, or eighteen. You lose a game early,
you're out of the top twenty five and trying to
get all the way back up into the top four
is really, really difficult. But if you're starting off as
(04:29):
number seven and you're losing your drop to eleven, well,
season goes on, you can get back up into there,
but getting out is really difficult. But now it's I
see that and I go you guys know, twelve teams
make the playoffs. Now, it doesn't matter if you're sixteenth,
it doesn't matter if you're tenth.
Speaker 4 (04:45):
Again, get twelve teams and pretty soon it's gonna be
sixteen teams in the playoffs, right, you know that's how
it's gonna go.
Speaker 1 (04:52):
So I feel like, okay, I get it. You know, hey,
I want to talk about this. I want to be
upset about something. I want to be outraged. I want
to say, how is Boise State not higher than twenty five.
You're gonna have to find something different to argue with
because yeah, okay, I understand that you think you're being disrespected,
but remember it suses itself out. Now we get the
top twelve teams, we'll argue about who can squeak in
(05:14):
at number twelve, But you're arguing again, who are the
teams that are snubbed for the NCAA tournament in basketball?
That's kind of where we're at. So this whole outrag'
is like, Okay, I got it. You want to be
upset about something. That's what lists are for, listener made
for people to be mad about this. I can't believe this,
I can't look. We love We've been in a list
society now for going on twenty years. We love listen rikings.
But you gotta find something a little bit better than Oh,
(05:35):
my goodness, where I can't believe how is Indiana coming
off a playoff the number twenty team? Okay, well you
lost your quarterback, but no, I'm not balance falling into it.
It doesn't matter. You gotta find something else to be argued.
That's the fun part of.
Speaker 4 (05:46):
It, right is you know, go back to your epic
battles with Gil Brandt all those years ago, right about
your ranking system?
Speaker 2 (05:53):
Do you have a system? You have a system? You like,
what's the methodology? How do we get that?
Speaker 4 (05:57):
And then for sometimes we're even what the methodology is
and how the rankings are waited. Other times it's hey,
here's your list, shut up and you move on. In
this particular case, like we're not getting a bunch of
quotes to kind of get to well, how did you
come to your top twenty five?
Speaker 2 (06:14):
Nor would we read them? Nor would we read them.
Speaker 4 (06:16):
That's the other part and the dirty little secret to
all of this, behind the curtain.
Speaker 2 (06:21):
You don't care what each individual.
Speaker 4 (06:23):
Guy, man, woman, child that voted that in each of
these cases, you don't. What's curious is you go through
and Texas is number one? Okay, they returned nine starters. Yes,
it's kind of curious.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
And they have Arch. I mean, come on, man, they
have how much is that waited to?
Speaker 4 (06:41):
All right, we think this guy's the second coming, the
next coming of the Manning greatness. So obviously we've got
a vault of I don't know, it's hard faster than
the other Mannings.
Speaker 1 (06:52):
He's faster than Tyree Kill. Apparently it's arch.
Speaker 4 (06:57):
He has said he doesn't want to leave, so that
makes him different, and so he's got that going for him.
Speaker 1 (07:02):
We'll see, we'll see how he feels after you methodology
a lot.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
Well, look, we got a whole year before becomes becomes
an issue.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
We'll see if that that that's a lot of lip
service from Archie Manning.
Speaker 4 (07:11):
Not arch Archie.
Speaker 1 (07:12):
Now, we gotta really do that from that's lip serve Archie.
Oh he's going to stay at Texas. Okay, Well, if.
Speaker 4 (07:18):
He comes in and again he plays world beating football
and they live up to this number one hype and.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
They roll through, that's great.
Speaker 4 (07:25):
I've got my Phil Steele on on order for the
website because I got a flight later in the week.
Guess what I'm doing. I'm either sleeping or I'm reading
Phil Steele and getting myself ready to steal college football
and a whole other light. But but it's the kind
of thing that we we love to argue about this
and it makes for great local radio fodder right in
(07:45):
late college football.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
Open up the phone lines.
Speaker 4 (07:48):
Why why you think this cornerback is going to dominate
the wide receiver of your most hated rival within conference?
And why you should be vaulted up? Why is nuss
Meyer not getting the respect he did? If art is
number one? How are we down here? And then you
give the phone number and everybody runs a muck.
Speaker 2 (08:06):
It's great. Yeah, no, look, it's great fodder.
Speaker 1 (08:08):
Look, and I'm gonna tell you this now, so what
what are some big things to take away from the pullar?
Obviously you're arguing about who's to what it all suss
itself out. Penn State at number two? Come on, man,
have you not watched Penn State and the James Franklin era.
When they play a team that's good, they don't win. Okay,
so I'm sorry. And the schedule this year, they have
a home game against Oregon, then they're at Ohio State, Right,
(08:31):
that'll be a big one, but that's not until November.
Then they play Indiana, who knows if they're gonna be
any good, but that game's at home, so kind of
a light is schedule. But it doesn't matter. They have
to beat a really good team for me to say, okay,
I'm all in on Peggy. I no, Drew Aller is
back and he's probably gonna be the quarterback of the
Jets in the year.
Speaker 2 (08:49):
I know all that.
Speaker 1 (08:50):
I understand you, but I mean, I've seen it so
much now to say you really think Penn State's that
good show, They have to beat somebody good, maybe win
two games, and I will say, hey, man, I'm taking
Penn State seriously, Like you can't just take Penn State
seriously off the jump, just because Wow, they're pretty good.
Speaker 2 (09:07):
They had a good record last year, they got their
quarterback coming. Like, no, I've seen them in big game.
I've seen there not struggling a number.
Speaker 1 (09:13):
They're not winning every single What is James Franklin's record
one in seventy five against top fifteen time.
Speaker 2 (09:18):
But that's the thing.
Speaker 4 (09:19):
This could be the year, this could be the the
recruiting class mixed with these the guys that came in
you mentioned Drew all or all of that that this
is the formula. I can only about what's the weight
on those past seasons in past fails for James Franklin.
I understand what you're saying, and I think I agree
with you. But it's like when you go to do
(09:40):
fantasy rankings. I've had to do a thing for the
Fantasy pros guys, right, and they're like, Hey, which of
these guys in the top twelve do you not like?
I'm like, well, I think he can get to number
twelve in the best ball scenario, but week to week
when I want him on my team, no, James Franklin's
that same guy. He might get me towards that promise.
But there are gonna be weeks from like, you know what,
(10:02):
I got a better option as my coach from my
fantasy squad to win me a game this week.
Speaker 2 (10:07):
I mean, in this opportunity, he's that same thing.
Speaker 1 (10:09):
Three and seventeen against top ten teams, and I don't
think he's beaten the top ten to.
Speaker 4 (10:14):
What five years?
Speaker 2 (10:15):
What's it? What's his record?
Speaker 1 (10:17):
Yeah, I mean, come on, man, I mean, I get it.
The pageantry of Penn State. Oh, it's great that Penn
State is good and people can look back and say,
I remember the late days of the late seventies and
Chuck Fusina and beating Vinnie Testa Verdi making him throw
all those picks and Pete Giftopolis ceiling the latest NAT
and Penn State National most recent Penn State natural Lettle. Yeah, no,
I get all that, but I've seen enough for this
(10:39):
era to know in big games, I don't show up.
Speaker 4 (10:40):
It happens. We got that Rose Bowl win right against Utah,
so we got that. But yeah, it's it's it's he's
three and nineteen.
Speaker 1 (10:47):
Yeah, I mean, come on, man, I mean really, I mean,
I get it. But oh, we're gonna put them up hot.
Oh they gotta beat somebody well.
Speaker 4 (10:53):
But but you gotta go with what the team is
on paper right now in terms of returning starters, the
assessment for what position by position, unit by unit, and
the fact that you return a bunch of guys that
played very well last year. So for James Franklin, I'm
thinking he's getting the benefit of the doubt with a
lot of change across the rest of the college football landscape.
(11:16):
And again, if you want, it's for now and what
makes for a great debate. The fact that there were
only two first place votes behind Texas a little bit surprising.
What do we have five, six, five or six teams
that finished with at least one vote right? And five
teams but he got Texas, ped State and Ohio State.
(11:38):
We got to six because Georgia had one in Oregon
had one. But all of that to say he's got
to go out and win it now, I mean it
makes for great What do we always talk about for
fantasy purposes and for other whenever we start doing these rankings,
you know, the thirty third team and their quarterback tiers?
Speaker 2 (11:56):
What's to do? It gets people all.
Speaker 4 (11:57):
Fired up and angry, and every when he's ranking to
him now what happens, great fodder, great fight.
Speaker 2 (12:03):
You hate my teen you you hate my my entire
being that that's what it does. It's great.
Speaker 4 (12:10):
Now.
Speaker 1 (12:10):
The other thing, the takeaway here, this is what is
really stunning, and this shows you that the bias towards
Alabama is no not going anywhere. They name their starting
quarterback today, say it right, Ty Simpson Simpson Simpson, Eh,
I'll remember that name. Look, he's been there forever. Caitlin
de Bor kept saying, hey, if we have to play today,
he's our quarterback. If you have to play, dais quarterback. Well, now,
(12:32):
especially their quarterback. You got Nussmeyer coming back, who is
a surefire first round NFL draft pick, right, coming off
an incredible year. And the talent level between LSU and Alabama,
it's not like it was, you know, ten fifteen years ago. Okay,
LSU is coming off the the cycle in Alabama's great. Alabama,
you don't even know what they have at quarterback and
(12:54):
they're still ranked higher than LSU. Right, which makes me think, boy, Alabama, really,
how did Alabama not find a way less?
Speaker 2 (13:03):
How did they not find it?
Speaker 4 (13:04):
Did they decide that nuss Meyer's injuries worse than the
betting market because he's second for the Heisman behind the Arch.
Speaker 1 (13:11):
I mean, it doesn't matter, it's it's you have a
you have a guy that everybody believes in outside of
Arch Manning is the best quarterback in the country. And
still Nope, I'm going with Alabama. We don't even know
if this guy is gonna be any good, but where's
ranking him higher? Like, come on, man, really be realistic
with Alabama. Just be so again you go to who's
gonna get that benefit of the doubt if you can
(13:31):
at the end of the season, Hey, get ready.
Speaker 4 (13:33):
Red shirt junior season for old Ty Simpson there excellent,
finally gets his chance if you started today, because that's
the other part, right, endorse your man.
Speaker 1 (13:45):
He's one of your quarterbacks in Sector seven. G sir, Nah, excellent,
But I'd be really just think about that, right, Brian
Kelly's gotta be like, really, we're looking up at Alabama.
Speaker 4 (13:55):
Maybe they don't like Brian Kelly. Maybe it's as so
much pro Alabama as it's an anti Brian Kelly.
Speaker 2 (14:00):
How about that? That is just outstanding man.
Speaker 4 (14:03):
Ever, since he did that dance, I think he lost
whatever street credit had.
Speaker 1 (14:07):

lock it in hand. Rip the knob off, uh so.
Speaking of locking in and ripping the no bo uh
today is a big anniversary in the NFL and actually
plays into one of the big stories coming off of
Week one of the NFL preseason. It was ten years
(16:07):
ago today I went to the gym the last time
I went to the gym ten You know, I remember
because I vividly remember being on the elliptical machine or
maybe it was a treadmill.
Speaker 2 (16:18):
Is treadmill?
Speaker 1 (16:18):
I remember, yeah, treadmill beause remember actually where the treadmill
one I was on And all of a sudden checking
my phone and seeing, oh, Jets quarterback Geno Smith suffers
broken jaw in locker room fight and saying to myself, Oh,
this is gonna haunt the Jets forever. Then, of course
(16:40):
we find out it was ten years ago. Today Jets
lineback to IKN and Polly upset with Geno Smith over
a plane ticket.
Speaker 3 (16:48):
Ye.
Speaker 1 (16:49):
Geno Smith, though was supposed to go to N and
Poly's football camp, didn't go after N and Poly fronted
the money for Geno Smith's plane ticket, which is twelve
hundred dollars. Now, there's a lot of beef between the
two of them, but they apparently settled it where Gino
Smith said, I'll give you six hundred dollars.
Speaker 2 (17:06):
Wait.
Speaker 4 (17:06):
I got to read the Todd Bowles quote. Though, Todd
Bowles said, Smith, this comes from New New York Post,
going all the way back to twenty fifteen. We'll need
surgery after quote he was coldcock, sucker punch, whatever you
want to call it, unquote reserve lineback. Isn't that the
same thing Antonio Brown said to a chef, I'll give
you the six hundred dollars.
Speaker 1 (17:25):
I think it was, yeah, and then he threw the
plastic bilbo baggins on everybody. So he goes up to
him in the locker room because he's asked him a
few times for this money, and Geno Smith, apparently, according
to reports, said dude, why you keep bugging me about this?
What are you gonna do if I don't give you
the money?
Speaker 4 (17:43):
How many years after the famous Family Guy episode, was this,
Why you ducking me?
Speaker 2 (17:48):
Path?
Speaker 4 (17:48):
Why you ducking me? Brian got money for fake mustache
and stuff. Where's my money?
Speaker 1 (17:53):
He said, what are you gonna do to me if
I don't give you the money? And this is when
he got sucker punched, broke his jaw. He was out
for six weeks, never played for the Jets. Ryan Fitzpatrick,
the backup at the time, this is the last good year.
Speaker 2 (18:05):
The Jets had.
Speaker 4 (18:06):
Oh my goodness, here you know, we had ten wins,
we almost made the playoffs. Oh my good Fitzpatrick had
the best year of a Jets quarterback ever.
Speaker 2 (18:13):
So it actually turned.
Speaker 1 (18:15):
Out for the Jets, but an embarrassing moment that will
live forever. And look from an organization that has had
them throughout time, you could have the most one hundred
most embarrassing moments.
Speaker 2 (18:27):
Of the Jets career. People are gonna go, no, you
missed a few.
Speaker 1 (18:30):
These have to be in the top one hundred, right,
forget about top hundred NFL players, no, top hundred Jets
brow This is the top five all time most embarrassing
moments in franchise history, probably top ten most embarrassing moments
of any franchise history where you're starting quarterback at sucker
punched because of a six hundred dollars bet.
Speaker 2 (18:47):
I got an idiot that.
Speaker 1 (18:48):
Want to fights me for two hundred dollars to go
back to my cousin Vinnie. This is the tenth anniversary
of that happening. And of course we'll get into the
Geno Smith sign gate now that's going on with him
in pu Arrow following their game this past weekend. But
this story turns ten years old today, and of course
I got a lot of people wishing me happy anniversary
(19:08):
on this not quite to the extent of, hey, it's
Bobby Benia day, but still, hey, ten years ago, man,
I'm like Teddy, and I feel like the Jets have
never recovered from this ten years ago thing where suddenly
it never will where they suddenly the path of the
team was thrown into flow.
Speaker 4 (19:23):
Well, and it's not like the Jets could have seen
this coming. Oh wait, back at twenty eleven, he was
arrested at the age of nineteen for throwing a punch
at a security guard and getting tasered by a deputy.
Simple battery. Thirteen months on probation and a bunch of
community service. But yeah, it's it's been haunting you for
a decade, and I know today it turns ten. It
(19:45):
drudges up all those old memories. It turns ten.
Speaker 1 (19:47):
It turns out really because I think about how, hey,
we really almost snatched victory from the jaws of defeat
because Fitzpatrick came in had a phenomena. Twenty fifteen, right,
this has been the last great sports year of my life.
The Mets went to the World Series. Jets were great
until Fitzpatrick throughout really badly though sports It ended badly,
but the Mets got to the World Series and the
(20:09):
Jets got to the last week and the season in
playoff contention and then Fitzpatrick just stunk it up against
the Bills. But uh, but that, but this was it man,
like that.
Speaker 4 (20:18):
I don't know that they've made it out of that.
Like this was Gino Smith was gonna finally have a
great year. They had weapons in. Brandon Marshall was there.
He was terrific how things are going to be different
for Gino And he couldn't get past the fact that
as a leader in a quarterback, right, I'm not I'm
gonna blow off paying this guy six hundred.
Speaker 2 (20:35):
Dollars, right, Like, dude, what's wrong with you? Right?
Speaker 1 (20:38):
Which gets you, which gets me to this story from
this past weekend where where Geno Smith and look and
and look, I get it for Max Crosby because it's
completely you know, on brand from Max Crosby. We talked
about this in the game on Friday Night, right, the
big Pete Carroll revenge game back in Seattle. After Seattle
let him go, they turned their back on Geno Smith.
(20:59):
Some dude comes to a game with a sign that
says bigger bust Gino Smith or JaMarcus Russell right, which, like, dude,
Gino Smith played pretty well for you for a couple
of years. Whatever, what do you do if you're a quarterback?
You blow it off, right, you blow it off? But instead,
what does Geno Smith and Max Crosby do? They come
out They double middle finger the guy with the sign
(21:19):
and the fans who are gonna be out there.
Speaker 2 (21:20):
Of course they're gonna boo Gino plays for the Raiders.
Now what the hell do you expect? Man?
Speaker 1 (21:24):
But here's Geno Smith, all of the entire career, what
he's had to go through, from the beginning of his
career till now. This is a guy that finally is
fortunate enough to hit it big and make money. And
you got a good contract with the with the Seahawks.
Now you got a one hundred million dollar contract with
the Raiders. But no, no, I'm gonna go on the
field and double middle finger one fan who brought a
(21:47):
stupid sign that it's like, it's not even a great
that you can't even see.
Speaker 2 (21:51):
You can't even compare the bust level.
Speaker 1 (21:53):
But no, I'm showing you I am still immature and
I'm still taking this personally right, because that's thing for
Gino Smith ten years have gone by, right, you think
the guy would learn a lesson. No, I'm not gonna
pay a reserve linebacker six hundred dollars. No, No, but I've
had all this, this, this, this side winding path to
getting back to start in the NFL where I was
never gonna get the chance again.
Speaker 4 (22:15):
Finally, Pete Carroll believes me. I go back to Seattle.
Speaker 2 (22:17):
I play well.
Speaker 1 (22:18):
I play well enough to get a decent contract there.
I get a great contract with the Raiders. Hey, it
took me a while to get there. But I gotta learn, Okay,
I gotta I gotta show that I that I've learned
and I'm growing as a as a person. No, almost
ten years to the day. No, I'm the starting quarterback
for the Raiders, and I'm gonna go out there and
double middle finger one fan with a sign and then
(22:38):
Pete Carroll. Yesterday he says, did you see the sign?
Like Pete Carroll tried to jump up and grab the sign.
Like again, We'll get to Pete Carroll. But I don't
know who I'm more embarrassed for. Maybe it's Gino Smith,
because you want to feel in ten years he's gonna
learn his lesson, But nope, I'm gonna show you I'm
still this petty, crazy guy that's gonna come out with
that kind of reaction again as a quarterback, if you're
(23:00):
a defensive end or a linebacker or a wide receiver
and you want to go out and say, hey, I
marched my own tune, but I catch eight passes a week,
or I marched my own tune, but I'll get you
three sacks and okay, I get it. No, you are
the quarterback and a leader of men, and I'm gonna
go back because one guy has a sign.
Speaker 4 (23:18):
One guy for a preseason game, it's got about fifty
people in.
Speaker 1 (23:22):
The entire stadium. I'm gonna double middle finger on the field.
Like I feel like, hey, man, dude, you're a raider now. Man,
if you weren't a raider, people didn't believe it. You
are absolutely a raider now. Like I'm embarrassed for Gino
Smith that in ten years, clearly he has not learned
a lesson.
Speaker 4 (23:36):
He's gonna end up getting fined more than that six
hundred dollars for this infraction. They're talking the NFL are
gonna find he and Crosby whatever. Pete Carroll's part in it.
He made his honest effort to go get it, and
that was a fun little picture of the freeze frame
of that. But for Gino Smith, you laugh at it.
(23:56):
You have a moment, you ask the guy if you want,
if he wants you to sign it, the sign and
you make a joke out of it. I would think,
I mean, I like that the competitive fires still burn
to that level, but to show that it upsets you.
Speaker 2 (24:09):
I mean, again, find your.
Speaker 4 (24:12):
Motivation as you will, but also recognize the stupidity of this,
and I get it. Jamis Winston was one of those
guys that got a nice balloon contract out of the
jump is out of the league very quickly. So if
you got one idiot fan that's able to get under
you that way, like what else is showing up at
the stadium's nationwide?
Speaker 2 (24:32):
What else have you seen that? Why do you still
feel so hurt?
Speaker 4 (24:36):
Pete Carroll has gone to bad for you twice now,
and this time he got someone to scratch out.
Speaker 2 (24:41):
Really a big check.
Speaker 4 (24:43):
For a team that's not really anticipating doing a whole
lot of anything. Right, they're eighteen to one to win
the division and maybe they can outperform. We're talking about
teams and trying to find the silver lining in what
might all otherwise be a very difficult situation. Believe in
Pete whatever, But Pete believed in you. He brought you
(25:03):
over from Seattle. He's giving you another least to have
some chucklehead in the stands get to you that much.
Speaker 2 (25:09):
And it doesn't seem like one sign, one sign.
Speaker 1 (25:12):
But Lebron went nuts because one guy burned his jersey
on social media, and because everybody retweeted it, it was treated like, oh,
it's a rash of.
Speaker 2 (25:19):
No eighteen thousand one dude. One dude is burning it.
Speaker 1 (25:22):
Lebron decides to go to I can't believe people are
doing this, Like, dude, one guy had a sign at
a preseason game, and you decide I'm gonna double middle finger,
Like really, you're the same immature guy that you were
with the Jets. Like really in ten years I'm like, oh, yeah,
the journey. No, he's right back to where he started.
He's the same same dude.
Speaker 4 (25:39):
But in the end, if between the white lines he plays, well,
everything's be fine.
Speaker 2 (25:43):
He's a raider now.
Speaker 4 (25:44):
He's a raider now, but needing to turn and flip
this guy off, Like, even if you do it in jest, it's.
Speaker 2 (25:50):
Caught on camera.
Speaker 4 (25:51):
I mean, really you see it, right, because it becomes
the interpretation of like, well, what's the facial countenance?
Speaker 2 (25:57):
Does he look mad when he sees it? Or is
he smiling? Doesn't matter, he's still affected.
Speaker 1 (26:02):
Now I would say it sounds like it's embarrassing, more
embarrassing for Geno Smith, right, because now you have Pete
Carroll jumping for the sign and defending Gino Smith. A
day I goes saying did see what the sign said?
The sign didn't say blank you or anything about you
or your family. It was a fun sign that really
didn't make a lot of sense, like all of a sudden,
oh my goodness, this sign at the game? Come on, man,
(26:22):
who's a bigger But no, JaMarcus Russell's the biggest buzz
in NFL history. It's a horrible sign.
Speaker 4 (26:27):
It's not even a smart sign. It's a terrible sign.
And it was a waste of ink and time and
poster board. But someone could have used that for a
third grade project and done great things and maybe become
a captain of industry.
Speaker 2 (26:39):
Instead, it ended up in this guy's hands.
Speaker 1 (26:41):
But like Pete Carroll is panicking with this entire storyline
about here's one sign for dude. If your quarterback can't
be okay with one sign at a preseason game, what's
he gonna do this year? And one thing I'm glad
about it doesn't It doesn't seem like there's video, But
come on, man, Pete Cow, you're seventy three years old
(27:02):
and you're jumping up trying to grab a sign like
it's high.
Speaker 2 (27:05):
School and the guy's going come on, jump higher plane.
What are you doing?
Speaker 3 (27:09):
Man?
Speaker 1 (27:10):
Like, really, if there's video of I really hope there
isn't for Pete's sake, And I said, ah, but like
because just seeing the still photo of him jumping in
there and hey, good on Pete Cow for being seventy three.
Speaker 4 (27:23):
Yeah, come on, I mean you're seventy three. You're jumping
to try to grab a sign like it's recess of
sophomore year.
Speaker 2 (27:29):
I kept come on. I mean, it's not.
Speaker 4 (27:30):
Like suddenly a bunch of people started sending him the
leg lamp that was mark for Gilay the Christmas story.
I'm not suggesting anybody do that, by the way.
Speaker 1 (27:40):
I mean that's like they're they're both Raiders now, man,
I mean really, they're they're both Raiders.
Speaker 2 (27:44):
Now.
Speaker 4 (27:44):
If you thought, hey, it's gonna be tough to wear
the Raider coat, No, No.
Speaker 2 (27:47):
I got that Raider jacket on. Might be bringing you know,
packets and sharm in there. I got.
Speaker 4 (27:52):
I mean, I got tight Raider leather pants. I got
Raiders underwear. No, I'm a Raider. Now I'm flipping out
over a sign. I'm gonna I'm seventy three and I'm
jumping to try to grab the sign out of there?
Speaker 3 (28:03):
What were you gonna do?
Speaker 2 (28:03):
If you grab the sign out of his hand? What
are you gonna do?
Speaker 4 (28:05):
That'd be even worse you gonna ript I mean rocked
me when signage?
Speaker 2 (28:12):
I mean, I guess.
Speaker 4 (28:13):
If you if you, if I had to say, even
though it's it's it's a I would say I'm more
embarrassed for Pete because of the because of what he
did and and and the felt feeling have to defend
a quarterback where Gino Smith, I'm like, yeah.
Speaker 1 (28:26):
I saw it ten years ago. He's the same guy. Now, Okay,
I can't say I'm really surprised. I would have thought
he would have grown, but no, no, no, I know
that it's.
Speaker 4 (28:33):
Now and hey, now listen, this guy with the sign's
got a running bit and he's been following Gino for
a decade. If we get a backstory like that, then
maybe there's some kitchiness and fun to it following in
it's a guy who wasted markers and poster.
Speaker 1 (28:48):
Do you think it might have been JaMarcus Russell? Like,
if it was JaMarcus he pulled.
Speaker 4 (28:52):
Off a mask like the live action Scooby Doo that's
coming to Netflix, then maybe you pull that off and
it's it's JaMarcus Russell underneath.
Speaker 2 (28:59):
Now, now that's ad bit.
Speaker 1 (29:02):
I mean really, I mean, I'm so embarrassed for both
of them. But now they're both Raiders, so I guess
I could say, well, all right, I can't really say
the journey is that that far outlandish? But I'm raire
is so embarrassing.
Speaker 2 (29:14):
Dude.
Speaker 1 (29:14):
This is where Pete Carroll you say, I don't know
why my quarterback was so worried about a bleeping sign.
Speaker 2 (29:18):
I really don't know why.
Speaker 4 (29:20):
See the Pete Carroll like trying to jump and take
it from the guy. But I'll jump and get it
for you. Do you don't worry, I'll jump and get
it for you.
Speaker 2 (29:25):
What are you talking about?
Speaker 4 (29:27):
All of a sudden he had X men, I'll get
molities and he jumped up into the stands and did
that Wolverine kind of landing. He's all, you know, out
of breadth and stuff. That would have been something that
would have been cool. Instead, it just it just looks stupid.
Time now to find out what's trending in the wide
world of sports. Guy has been called the JaMarcus Russell
of Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (29:47):
Don't you dare.
Speaker 4 (29:48):
He's never read a playbook either. In the off season.
It's just say if he made sixty eight million, though
he might trumpet that.
Speaker 6 (29:54):
There is the great story that they were suspecting he
was not looking at the film they were sending home with.
Speaker 2 (30:00):
Yeah, so they did sent homemade blank DVD.
Speaker 1 (30:04):
That's where Draft Day got the idea to do that
whole hundred dollars bill thing.
Speaker 2 (30:09):
So I actually like to say, oh, look good, coach,
Yeah it was great. Everything's awesome. Yeah.
Speaker 6 (30:13):
The Milwaukee Brewers have won ten games in a row,
seven to won the final tonight over Pittsburgh. The Brewers
this season had a losing record in late May. Since then,
they are forty nine and sixteen with an eight game
winning streak now a separate ten game winning streak. They
also had an eleven game winning streak in this stretch,
amazing the Brewers overall seventy four and forty four winning
(30:37):
pitcher Jose Kintona ten and four after going six innings
for the victory tonight.
Speaker 4 (30:42):
Steve, weren't they down like six nothing yesterday?
Speaker 2 (30:44):
Milwaukee Brewers.
Speaker 6 (30:45):
Let's see who did they play recently?
Speaker 2 (30:47):
Yeah, yeah, it's really.
Speaker 4 (30:49):
Jose was the guy that said, yeah, no, we think
you're done.
Speaker 2 (30:53):
Yeah, we're gonna move on. There were still five more
innings after that deficit.
Speaker 6 (30:56):
So, by the way, the Phillies first in the NA
six games over the idle Mets, who've lost seven in
a row. Now. Philly's won tonight four to one at Cincinnati,
beating Andrew Abbott, who was eight and two. Kyle Schwarber
hit his forty second home run. It's the Angel seven
nothing over the Dodgers in the top of the seventh.
Speaker 2 (31:15):
You know, it wasn't that long ago.
Speaker 6 (31:16):
The Dodgers won eleven straight times head to head against
the Halos. After tonight, apparently it will be the Angels
beating the Dodgers six of their last seven meetings. This's
the first of a three game set this week. The
Dodgers do play the Padres in each of the next
two weekends. It might be a lead down to one
game over the Padres for La and the NL West.
That lead was nine in early July. Padres are winning
(31:39):
for to one at the Giants in the bottom of
the seventh inning. The Giants had tied it one to
one in the sixth on a Rafael Dever's homer off
You Darvish, but Darvis that was the only run. He
allowed six innings, six strikeouts, and the Padres immediately responded
with a home run and three runs total in the
top of the seventh. San Diego at San Francisco in
the bottom of the seventh inning, and Lake game in
(32:01):
Northern California with the A's hosting the Rays. That's to
the sixth inning, Tampa Bay up four to one. Houston
held on seven to six over Boston, Texas with a
run bottom of the ninth and one in the tenth,
edged Arizona seven to six. Saint Louis sent Colorado to
an eighth straight loss, three to two with two runs
in the bottom of the eighth wins for Detroit and
Kansas City. Yankees hit four solo homers in a victory
(32:24):
against Minnesota six to two.
Speaker 2 (32:26):
Rams.
Speaker 6 (32:26):
Quarterback Matthew Stafford misspracticed again.
Speaker 2 (32:28):
He's been out with a bad back.
Speaker 6 (32:30):
The forty nine ers say wide receiver Brandon Ayuk might
return in mid October after last year's knee injuries. Texas
is number one an AP's preseason college football poll, barely
ahead of number two Penn State. Texas had never started
the year number one in the AP pole. The Longhorns
were preseason number two five different times. By the way,
(32:50):
Ohio State number three, and AP the Buckeyes are even
the preseason top five for a ninth straight year.
Speaker 2 (32:56):
Back to you, Thank you, Steve O.
Speaker 1 (32:58):
The Jason Smith Show with Mo My Best Friend Mike
Harmon Coming up next more NFL preseason Week one breakdown.
The most anticipated debut by a long shot.
Speaker 4 (33:09):

Speaker 3 (33:13):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven

Speaker 1 (33:22):
The Jason Smith Show with My Best friend Mike Harmon.
Speaker 3 (33:25):
Well dressed Cobot Week one of.
Speaker 2 (33:28):
The NFL preseason. This is great.
Speaker 1 (33:31):
I mean, with enough star players playing, now, enough teams deciding,
hey we're gonna let some of ours side.
Speaker 2 (33:37):
Hey, there's great stuff to talk about.
Speaker 4 (33:38):
It.
Speaker 1 (33:38):
We had we had about a two year run up
until last year, Like at twenty twenty one. Two was like, man,
nobody plays, this is tough, man, this is the nobody's playing.
We're gonna talk about seven on sevens and joint practices.
Speaker 2 (33:54):
We don't see anybody in the games.
Speaker 4 (33:55):
Well, the joint practice is where you get your best reps,
most extens play. But you know, it doesn't mean we
can't try to uh extrapolaid off of a couple of series.
I mean, look what we got a full weekend out
of Shodoor Sanders. Oh yeah, yeah, right, nine possessions, some
of it against the ones not looking so great. But
then it opened up and while he was a world
(34:17):
beater and he didn't throw up on himself, so everybody
got excited. Then he followed Tony Grosey and you get
an extra story, and then you got Jackson Dart and
then you get going back to the Bengals. Right, t
Higgins stop talking about it's like we're gonna be terrible again,
and said, well, you've been terrible in September.
Speaker 2 (34:33):
Show me, show me like your Texas take show me.
Speaker 1 (34:37):
And we also had the debut of Travis Hunter, which
maybe the debut that everybody wanted to see the most.
What was gonna happen or was he gonna play both ways?
How good was he gonna be doing it? As we
said he was gonna be fine. And you know what,
Travis Hunter was fine. Played a little bit offense, caught
a couple of passes, played a little bit of defense,
looked fine. Right, This is for all of the Travis Hunter.
(35:01):
You gotta just deal with it. I'm past the point
of saying I wish people would just drop it, because
this is He's going to play both ways. So now
at the point where you know what, you don't like it, sorry,
deal with it. He's gonna play both ways and it's
gonna be fine. It's gonna be fine for now because
he's not gonna play so many snaps in the preseason.
Speaker 4 (35:18):
They're gonna work him up.
Speaker 1 (35:19):
He's gonna play both sides of the ball when the
season starts. For Jacksonville, and I don't care if the
biggest thing is always shortening his career. The reason the
guy has a present is because he plays both sides
of the ball. Right, if he was just a receiver, yeah,
maybe he's a first round pick. Just a defensive back
of maybe he's a first round pick. But oh wait
(35:40):
a minute, this guy could do him both at a
really high level. This is why he was taken number
three overall. This is why he has such a big
present and future in the NFL because he plays both well.
I understand what people people want, Oh, we can't do
what he can't do it.
Speaker 2 (35:54):
No, he can do both. He showed it. He's gonna do.
Speaker 1 (35:57):
Both until it shows that he can't do both. And
if you worry about it future, I'll tell you this.
In three years, he can always say, hey, maybe a
few less naps defensively. Oh okay, maybe a few less
naps offensively. Oh okay, that's fine, we can do that.
Speaker 2 (36:11):
He can do that.
Speaker 1 (36:11):
When he's twenty four or twenty five, he's looking at
his next contract, Hey, few less snaps. I want to
be able to But he wants to play both ways.
He can play both ways. This is why he was
drafted and so far he looked fine. Again, he's gonna
catch passes in the slot. He's gonna have a little
bit of a matchup advantage there. We already know how
good he is a defensive back. He's gotta learn the
(36:32):
system Maaron Jacksonville obviously and learn you know, look when
you come into the defensive back in college from college football.
But I'm pretty sure he's gonna be able to make
that adjustment and he will be fine playing both sides
of the ball this year.
Speaker 4 (36:43):
Yeah, that effort on Caleb Johnson is the one that's
seen around the world. Ah, you know, he ate some
dirt as Johnson ran passed him. Yeah, you're worried about
him a little bit and the defending in the run
game and what kind of impact that's gonna have possession
into possession, But that's for Liam Cohen and everybody there
to figure out. And I'm don't worry that much about
how he defends the run game.
Speaker 2 (37:04):
I'm not.
Speaker 1 (37:04):
I mean, come on, you can just pick a lot
of things out there. I don't like coutch Okay a
defensive you get physical against him. Sure is he gonna
make those plays?
Speaker 2 (37:13):
Maybe not? But can he slow it down and wait
for help. Yeah, that's what you're kind of hoping.
Speaker 4 (37:17):
But in the interim, the long game, it's the old
Saturday night fever blank the future.
Speaker 2 (37:24):
Twenty twenty five.
Speaker 4 (37:25):
If the guy can play on both sides of the
ball and guess what by week two or week three,
they may decide they've got to cut one way or
the other and decide where he gives them the most benefit.
They have to be judicious about it. If he has
a big possession and the offense marches as you're hoping
he's able to help Trevor Lawrence do, then maybe there's
going to be a circumstance whereby he's got to sit
(37:46):
a possession defensively out. You've got to figure out those
rotations and whether it makes sense.
Speaker 2 (37:50):
But do we get a lot.
Speaker 4 (37:52):
Of things that boy, I love you guys if you're
in a customer support scenario on any business, do we
get a bunch of videos where people walk in and say.
Speaker 2 (38:00):
Man, I love you. My latte has been perfect.
Speaker 4 (38:03):
No, it's I've been standing in line like a jerk
for twenty five minutes and then you get my drink wrong.
That's gonna go up on social media, and that's the
thing that's gonna go viral. Likewise, Travis Hunter saying, eh,
let's wait and see nobody wants to hear that. Tell
me now he's gonna suck. That's what people want. I
spend a lot of time on my hair and he
hits it. He always hits my Hey, HiT's my Uh?
(38:26):
I mean, I mean again, I don't.
Speaker 1 (38:27):
Know what people really want other than like I feel
like they want to see him fail, Like how do
you want to see Travis Hunter fail?
Speaker 5 (38:34):
Like?
Speaker 1 (38:34):
Why do you want to see this not happen? I
don't remember seeing people say I don't want to see
show heyo Tani Pitchen hit.
Speaker 2 (38:40):
No, no, no, he can't. I don't have to see
in that much of it.
Speaker 4 (38:43):
Well, I think there's some of it to where I
don't want to see a guy become mediocre at both
and I think that's kind of the fear for Travis Hunter.
Speaker 2 (38:49):
Here's the thing.
Speaker 1 (38:49):
If he is guess what the Jacksonville Jaguars will say, Hey,
you know what, We're gonna play you on one side
of the ball, the side of the ball you're best at.
And that's how it's gonna go. Like, like people thought
we want it can't be changed since not something that's
a living, breathing thing.
Speaker 2 (39:02):
No, and I get that, But we want greatness.
Speaker 4 (39:04):
And if we think we're gonna get deprived of greatness
based on the decision being made and we think we
know better, we're gonna chime in shoe. Ay Tony didn't
bitch last year fifty to fifty. I just saw they're
having a second fifty to fifty bobblehead night.
Speaker 2 (39:16):
That's how popular I mean.
Speaker 1 (39:17):
But like every time he misses a tackle is but
it's gonna be oh, because he plays both ways, he's
too sorry anytime he drops a pass or is it?
It's because he plays both ways? I know he has
shown becomes a nice convenient excuse. That's gonna be the
thing that's gonna drive me crazy.
Speaker 2 (39:30):
But do you know what's great about it?
Speaker 4 (39:33):
You're paying attention to Jacksonville Jaguars football, becometing.
Speaker 2 (39:36):
It winning, winning in a list of teams will pay
attention to Why do you think that?
Speaker 1 (39:42):
Why I talked about what a great draft pick he
was because sometimes there are teams that you know what
you can get a great player, but you need identity
and Trevor Lawrence, I'm sorry, is not your identity because
he's not that great. But Travis Hunter can be that guy,
can be that guy. Kids all by his jersey, he
could be What is Travis Hunter doing? He buys you
relevance and eye right. So yes, that's why he was
also such a great pick for them because this is
(40:04):
what he brings you.
Speaker 4 (40:06):
But as long as he brings the greatness, and that's
what people are afraid of, man, then he becomes like
Trevor Lawrence, a mediocre guy.
Speaker 2 (40:16):
He's a jag.
Speaker 1 (40:17):
He's gonna be just as much a jag as Trevor
Lawrence is. There's a Jack Exit altbout of Fresco hat
swollen Dome, Jason and Mike coming up next. One big
NFL game this weekend. Two big quarterback stories going in
different directions.
Speaker 2 (40:32):
That's next. This is Fox
