Speaker 2 (00:23):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
Hello, Welcome in Side Hour two The Jason Smith Show
with my best friend Mike Harmon. GID you live from
the tire Rack dot com studios where, yes, we will
have Game seven in the Stanley Cup Final. The Oilers
knock off the Panthers five to one. The Panthers haven't LEDs,
it's taken a three to zero lead and now winner.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
Take all on Monday.
Speaker 1 (00:52):
Not since nineteen forty two in any sport have we
seen a team come from three down to win a
championship series. And we could see that on Monday night.
And really, Paul Maurice, former Whaler's head coach, former Hurricanes
head coach, coach from the Stanley Cup Final back in
two thousand and two, so I speak Paul Maurice, but boy,
(01:13):
I'll tell you.
Speaker 3 (01:14):
I have no idea what you tell your team.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
I mean, what could you possibly tell the pant like
you do you just do you just rip into them?
Do you just make them understand what's at stake? Do
you do you start telling jokes and dad jokes on
the way home? Like why don't you play poker in
the jungle? Anybody know? Too many cheatas? I got a
million of them. I mean, I don't know, I really,
I don't know what's the right button to push. I
(01:38):
have no idea what you tell a team who is
on the cusp of blowing a three nothing lead and
losing a championship.
Speaker 4 (01:44):
Oh I know, as I'd sound an awful lot like
Phil Parkinson, the gaffer over at Wrexham, because I'd be
cursing up a.
Speaker 3 (01:52):
Seasie easy, easy.
Speaker 4 (01:55):
And you would have to bleep out every other word
I had to say when you quote Phil Parkinson, watch
out man, Nobody, Nobody. Kurtz is like no, no, no,
But you know, Game seven, it might be the best
assembly of words in our language other than unlimited refills.
Speaker 3 (02:15):
Okay, sure, I'm with you. I'm with you on that.
Speaker 4 (02:18):
I mean, because from a sports perspective, unless you're on
the you know, wrong side of blowing a three nil lead.
Speaker 3 (02:25):
Let's see what I did there. I went nil to that.
Speaker 4 (02:28):
You know, you're you're up three games to none in
a series, and the potential is that you've blown it
in historic fashion. Yeah, I really, what's what's the message?
You just point to how you've been outplayed out man,
and from a strategy standpoint, the intensity. I mean, this
game didn't I mean book, the final score is, you know,
(02:51):
five to one, you get the empty netters and whatever,
But did it ever feel threatening at all?
Speaker 3 (02:57):
No?
Speaker 4 (02:58):
No, I mean the late laid down And that's several
games in a row where Florida's hasn't had that fight
and when you've got an opportunity to extinguish a team.
How many times have we said it in all these
sports the decade we've been on here, Like I get it,
you know, some love the gentleman sweep, some saying ah,
they got the one and laid down.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
Right.
Speaker 4 (03:20):
We talked about it with Boston giving up the game
to Dallas last week and after a quarter just kind
of going yeah, it's not our night. You know, It's
like no, you fight like hell because anything can happen,
and here it is.
Speaker 1 (03:33):
Man getting ready Game seven on Monday night outstanding The
Jason Smith Show and Mike Carmon live from the tyrack
dot Com studios. Tyrec dot com, I'll hope you get there,
an unmatched selection, fast free shipping, free road as a protection,
and over ten thousand recommended installers.
Speaker 3 (03:49):
Tyrack dot com is the way tire buying should be.
Speaker 1 (03:53):
Well, today brought us well, look, how do we top
a really big trade in the NBA a day ago,
the Caruso trade for Josh Giddy.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
Well, how about that really got a lot of people mad.
People are still talking about it today. Man, that's how great.
That's how great this trade now they're still talking about
it now.
Speaker 4 (04:09):
Well because some of it is trying to u determine, right,
Giddy wasn't probably going to be a starter, and they're
talking about roll and fit and whatever, and he wasn't happy.
Speaker 3 (04:20):
Cruso on the other side.
Speaker 4 (04:22):
You know, we talk about draft picks and everything else,
and that seems to be a sticking point. But at
no point was it a or should it have been
a disparaging of what Giddy is At this point, there's
just when you have a team that has thirty draft
picks or whatever the hell it is, the fact that
you don't walk away with one of them for a
(04:44):
guy that has still got a lot to round out
in his game. And I get it, the economics of
Cruso whatever else, but Giddy's going to be available for
a rookie extension here soon enough as well. You'll have
to make a decision on him. That It was just
kind of fun to watch the back and forth in
the interwebs today, Jason, because a lot of my friends
back in Chicago not so happy. They lose a cold
(05:06):
hero and they and they get a guy that you know,
the teams building for a championship and they desire they
don't like you enough.
Speaker 3 (05:16):
You'd be in the you'd be in the lottery every
year with Alex Caruso. What does it matter?
Speaker 4 (05:22):
And they well, but you don't want to feel like
you're running in place if you are right, that's why
all those apps on you know a way if you're
you're getting on the bicycle, except when you've got someone
yelling at you at the pelotons or whatever.
Speaker 3 (05:36):
How many of those devices were here.
Speaker 4 (05:38):
Insert yourself into the Himalayan mountains as you run your
your hour, right, it was always here's this this great trail, uh,
you know, up in the Sequoia National Park. Like it's
like instead of all right, I'm just walking and all
I see is the sweaty, gross person in front of
me and whatever crappy TV show they've got out in.
Speaker 1 (05:59):
The So we'll have more on that coming up in
a bit. But I will say two big rumors today
that we have because I look, the giddy thing. We'll
talk to Mark Medeen is going to join us in
a few minutes, the ramifications of that deal. But the
two big trade rumors today involve two big market teams
three thousand miles away.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
Maybe you woke up and you.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
Saw this trending on social media and I saw it
and I said, yeah, I didn't think about moving him,
but yeah, you kind of have to. According to reports,
the New York Knicks are going to likely bring back
Isaiah Hartenstein, which you kind of have to because he
was great, and they're looking to move Mitchell Robinson, who
they signed a year ago to a big extension. The
(06:43):
guy's one of the most talented big men in the game,
but he just can't stay healthy. Yeah, and you can't
count on him and maybe a fresh start somewhere else.
Speaker 3 (06:51):
But the Knicks are looking to move him.
Speaker 1 (06:53):
And this is why when I picked the Knicks and
the Thunder for the finals, what did I say? Flexibility
to get better? That's what you have to have, right
The Thunder had the flexibility. They could trade Josh Giddy
and get Alex Caruso, a two time All NBA defensive
guard who's gonna be a good two way, three and
D type guy. He's exactly what they need. Right this
is that's a trade that could push the Thunder into
(07:13):
the finals. The Knicks have so much they can use
to move to get better. They can trade Mitchell Robinson,
they can move Julia's Randall, they can move him for
a big player. They can move him for a couple
of really good depth pieces. Because the team is kind
of centered around the Villanova Knicks now right, the Nova
Knicks are kind of where it's at. They're not getting
bridges from the nets. It's not gonna happen. I'd love
(07:33):
to see it, but it's not gonna happen. But here,
the Knicks was so much out there to go get,
and who you have to look at is I have
to say all right, where are we going to get
our star players from? And this is I'm gonna look
at the teams that are giving up or starting over,
and the first team I look at, of course, sorry, buddy,
is the Bulls, because obviously the Bulls are starting over, right,
(07:56):
and they're gonna give away. They're gonna give away Zach Lavine, right,
They're gonna have to Would they want to trade in
the Eastern Conference? No, But if the Knison give them
a couple of young players in a first round pick, yeah,
they can move Zach Levine to the Knicks, who can
fit right in as a great wing player. He'd be
able to assimilate himself defensively with this team. Give them
another score, because the Knicks are gonna need another score.
(08:18):
I mean, that's what people aren't aren't realizing. You saw
that the Knicks kind of hit it big with the
triumvirate of Brunson and Devincenzo is a pretty good support guy,
but you can't count on him for twenty five a game.
And Josh Hart's a guy that's gonna fill, you know,
fill the box, but you can't rely on him to
score twenty five a game. So they're gonna need another score,
(08:38):
and he's a guy that would go would be very inexpensive.
He could fit right in. You have the salaries to
make it happen. That's what I would do. I know
that the Lakers are gonna sit back. Hey maybe maybe,
but we'll get to the Lakers in a second. But
I can see that being a move that happens. Nixon
Bulls do they trade that off and they don't. But
when you're the Bulls and you are and you have said, okay,
we're starting over this group that we have, it didn't work.
(09:01):
We tried it for three years, we went and got
a Big three. It didn't work. We can't get out
of the playing round if we even get into the
playing round. So yeah, they're desperate. So that's the team
I call first. If they're if they have Mitchell Robinson
on the trading block and they want to make a move,
there are going to be teams interested in him because
he's young. His salary is not crazy. But you can
use it to match, you can use it to get better.
(09:22):
That's the first thing I do is I call the Bulls.
I try to get Zach Lavine, and all of a sudden,
everybody on the Knicks plays defense, great, you add another score.
Speaker 3 (09:30):
And I'm telling you that's why I picked the Knicks
of the finals.
Speaker 4 (09:33):
Yeah, but you ain't winning any titles or getting out
of the lottery with Mitchell Robinson either, especially if he
can't stay on the on the court. So even though
the fifteen million dollars a year salary is palatable, I mean, yeah,
but buddy, we have here going in.
Speaker 3 (09:48):
I'm just saying we're not.
Speaker 1 (09:49):
We can give you that, we can give you another
young player, we can give you a first round pick.
I'm not saying it's just straight up I'm not gonna
do one. I'm not gonna do Caruzzo forget he No,
I'll give you more than that. I'm sure the Knicks
would give one. No, have the first ron.
Speaker 4 (10:02):
Voice of reason now watching how this team is operated
and this front office is operating, So that means Mitchell
Robinson is a bull.
Speaker 2 (10:12):
But it's the.
Speaker 1 (10:17):
We're gonna get Levine and the Jordan statue. We're getting
both of them.
Speaker 4 (10:20):
Oh you get those two well, but legitimately like it's
it's been a disaster. But you go and you find
the rudderless squads where you've got a whole lot of nothing. Okay,
bolls now have Kobe White and Josh Giddy. Okay, good,
that's great. There's not a whole lot else. All the
other veterans of any level of skill are are either
(10:43):
running away or are just filling space. Probably going to
be picked over once we start looking towards the trade deadline,
if not this next seventy two to ninety six hours
ahead of the draft, right, we'll see some of these
moves made here in word order, uh, and then eventually
they're allowed to be confirmed, you know, like the JJ
(11:05):
Reddick hiring h and all of that stuff. But you know,
rob Robinson's a solid player certainly, you know, rose up
for your squad on a number of occasions. I do
like that you you have a number of those guys
that you'd love to see gone. Because I'm surprised you
didn't say, how are we spinning off Julius Randall Waler,
because that's normally and the next thing out of your mouth,
(11:27):
it's like, so the fact that you went Robinson, I
was fully anticipating rehashing prior arguments about Julius Randall.
Speaker 3 (11:37):
So you zag on me, look at that, dude, if
you want Randall. I'll give you Randall. No, no, because
with that salary get everything.
Speaker 1 (11:50):
Nah, I'll give you whatever you want, buddy, whatever you want.
I'm just gonna say, it's like this is like in fantasy. Okay,
here's the only four guys that are on touch any
of these other guys you can.
Speaker 2 (12:04):
Now.
Speaker 1 (12:05):
Meanwhile, that's not the only big rumor is Earlier today,
we saw, potentially, according to Shamsterarania saying that the Lakers
could be circling.
Speaker 3 (12:14):
Back on de Jon de Murray, a guy they.
Speaker 1 (12:16):
Were interested in a year ago wound up having a
really good year with the Hawks. This is another team
that looks like they're ready to blow it up and
start over again.
Speaker 5 (12:24):
Right.
Speaker 1 (12:25):
You've heard Trey Young on the trading block, and potentially
he's a fit somewhere, but de jontey Murray as well,
and the Lakers are under so much pressure.
Speaker 3 (12:34):
To get better.
Speaker 1 (12:36):
This is what you have to take advantage of a
team that is so desperate. Hey, we tried it with this,
with this incarnation of the team, and it hasn't worked.
Ready to go on, Right, the Bulls are ready to
start over again. The Hawks are ready to start over again.
This is where you get really aggressive and obviously nobody
is untouchable. You're bringing in an all star caliber player
to come in and really be part of your Big
(12:58):
three with.
Speaker 3 (12:58):
Lebron and Ad look out, man, I mean, if you
can some.
Speaker 1 (13:01):
I mean, this is a guy you gotta go after,
because you gotta go after teams when they're feeling weak
and they're feeling like we we we just have to
get out from under, right, Like my dad, every time
he gets money in his pocket, he walks around like
it's burning a hole. He's gotta go spend it, right,
I mean, my dad getting like millions of dollars. Like
if my dad's got a fifty, you know, I'm gonna go,
I'm gonna go, i gonna go do this. I'm gonna go,
I'm gonna get this, and I'm gonna buy this, and
(13:21):
I'm gonna buy Dad. Dad, just hold on to the money, Dad,
hold on to your bunny. But this is what it
is NBA teams now they get so desperate to move on. Hey,
this is the kind of trade we're gonna make. And
those are two of the most desperate teams. And I
don't think there's any coincidence. Why you see the Lakers
involved in a rumor for de Jontay Murray where everybody
should be available. I know you want to go. We'll
(13:42):
get more out of Austin Reeves. We'll get this, we'll
get that. But if that's what you have to give up,
that mean de Jontay Murray is a special player and
he would be someone that can flip your fortunes right away.
If you are the Lakers, he'd fit right in. He'd
be a big he would do everything that you'd expect
to get out of two or three guys, right like that.
That's how, that's how it's a player.
Speaker 4 (13:59):
He would be averaging for the twenty a year, three
straight years going back to the final year in San Antonio,
and he's got a contract with three years on it
before your player option twenty five, twenty seven, twenty nine,
and then the player option for twenty seven twenty eight. Now,
(14:20):
the last one was the rumor of Chris Paul on
a minimum deal. How about that, Oh boy, Chris Paul?
Speaker 1 (14:27):
Yeah yeah, Chris, Well, I forgot Chris Paul turns thirty
this year, So that's that'll be?
Speaker 3 (14:32):
Is that what it's for our too soon on? Then?
Speaker 5 (14:35):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (14:35):
Reck that you did there The Jason Smith Show with
Mike Carmen live from the ti iraq dot Com studio.
So again, those are two big time rumors. Both teams
should make them happen. If I'm the Knicks, you have to.
If you're the Lakers, you really have to. Coming up next,
speaking of the Lakers, did they get it right with
jj Reddick? What about some of the trades we might see?
(14:56):
Is now you're seeing things happening?
Speaker 3 (14:57):
Oh.
Speaker 1 (14:58):

Speaker 3 (16:21):
Mark.
Speaker 1 (16:21):
Again, I need to apologize, like I apologize to Dan
Woiki last night. Uh, this is the second of the
last three years you did not get the Lakers head
coaching job.
Speaker 3 (16:31):
I am sorry about that.
Speaker 5 (16:32):
Hey, I'm still in the running for the assistant coaching
position here. I mean JJ Reddick has got to fill
out his staff here. I could be a great voice
for him.
Speaker 1 (16:41):
Okay, all right, Well, if you still I didn't know
you were still in the running, I'm sorry that.
Speaker 5 (16:44):
I'm glad Reddick does his podcast so we do the
radio work. Like they should't be able to overlap.
Speaker 1 (16:52):
Hey, at some point I feel like I can manage
the Mets, right, Gottlieb is coaching, was Tom Bay Reddick
is coaching the Lakers' I'm.
Speaker 3 (16:59):
A about eighteen months away from managing the Mets. It's
going to work.
Speaker 5 (17:02):
And how about this, I'm sure you could establish a
great relationship with with the lebron by drinking some wine
exactly exactly.
Speaker 3 (17:10):
See, there you go.
Speaker 1 (17:11):
We could figure I'll tell him how many times I
go to Blaze Pizza.
Speaker 3 (17:14):
He'll love me. He will absolutely love me.
Speaker 4 (17:16):
No, and then you'd start yelling at him for that
time he was supposed to show up in your neighborhood
didn't And yeah it was the gig.
Speaker 3 (17:22):
Yeah, but if I'm as head coach, I got to
let that go. I think if you'll never let that go.
Speaker 1 (17:27):
H What do you think, Mark, where it's been twenty
four hours of dust has settled? Where are you on
the JJ Reddick hiring for the Lakers.
Speaker 5 (17:34):
Yeah, it's really fascinating because I think from the beginning
and up till now, I haven't had necessarily a problem
with the Lakers hiring JJ Reddick. What I do have
a problem with is the context. I mean, I think
that it is a little bit disconcerting the way they
got through JJ Reddick. I understand why they went after
Dan Hurley. I am under not the assumption, you know,
(17:58):
being told that it wasn't like it came out of nowhere.
They had discussions prior to that infamous meetium where Dan
Early and his wife flew out to LA But it
did give me some pause that this might be a
sign that there wasn't exact synergy with everyone in the
front office, exact vision, and when he talk to people
(18:20):
within the Lakers, you know, their vision can be a
little bit clear. But the problem is there's so many
objectives that are trying to achieve that seems impossible because
the objective number one is they want a coach that
can maximize Lebron James's remaining years. Objective number two, same
thing with Anthony Davis, so that he's ready to become
the face of the franchise when Lebron retires. Objective number
(18:45):
three is to have a coaching staff that can help
develop the young players and also improve you know, their
whole you know, roster from top to bottom, so they
have roster depth and know, yeah, they want to still
be in attention for an NBA championship, like something's got
to give here, and the Lakers, I think internally will
(19:06):
concede this isn't a dream job. But I think inevitably
it just seems like the rains on the wall that
JJ Reddick could ultimately become a head coach, a good
head coach. But because there's so many potential landmines that's
under the microscope that follows Lebron James and the Lakers,
I can't help but think this is a setup for failure.
Speaker 4 (19:29):
Not to mention that there is a very large contingent
of the media that is rooting for it to fail,
and look.
Speaker 5 (19:36):
Not to mention that there's going to be two candidates
with me and you that are going to be undermined
because we want the head coaching position.
Speaker 4 (19:45):
Everybody wants that job. Let me ask you this. You
know I brought it.
Speaker 3 (19:48):
Up last day. Let me put it out on Twitter.
Speaker 1 (19:51):
Mark answer, Mark Madeina says, I will undermine Jj Rehtti.
Speaker 3 (19:56):
The Lakers.
Speaker 4 (19:57):
Wasn't that the thing when Jason Ginn was an assistant
coach that everybody was looking on like they did you look.
Speaker 3 (20:02):
Over your shoulder because he's coming to after Wow.
Speaker 5 (20:04):
Look that wound up not being the case. Because Frank
Vogel helped the Lakers win a championship. Of course they
had a good year, and then you know, Jason Kidd
was being offered a pretty attractive job with the Mavericks,
So you take it. But look, I think the writing
on that wall is inevitable. Even though they wound up
having a good partnership and both are great coaches. If
(20:27):
Frank Vogel didn't succeed eventually, Jason Kidd would have taken
his place.
Speaker 3 (20:31):
Yeah, he was gonna do that.
Speaker 4 (20:32):
But the thing coming out of it, Mark, was the
report saying that Genie Buss was quote genuinely disappointed.
Speaker 3 (20:40):
Who's the rat? I don't know, Mark, Now we know
he's he's undermined, neither of mind. Come on, we know I.
Speaker 5 (20:51):
Am Innocentius charges our ironian. I will say that, I
know that there's been a lot of fun speculation, you
know during this whole coaching search on was this just
you know, a ploy for Dan Hurley to get a
raise and or the Lakers just throwing us out there
to make it look like it was a real coaching search.
(21:12):
They wouldn't fly a candidate out just to go through
the motions to win, like the Twitter game, right, The
interests in Dan Hurley was real. They made a real pitch.
I think before the meeting ended they had optimism that
this would be a good pitch and they could convince
Dan Hurley to take the job. So, yeah, the disappointment
(21:36):
was genuine. They felt like they gave them a good
contract offer. They sold everything that's good about the Lakers.
They also talked pragmatically both sides about, you know, the
challenges that they inherit with this roster and moving forward.
But you know, they never got a sense that when
they were having these conversations with Dan Hurley that there
(21:56):
was any undertone of hey, you guys have a lot
of red flags and how do you address them. It
was more about just having a frank basketball discussion about
the good things about the roster and the challenging things.
And so they concluded, you know what, we got rejected
more because he's got a good thing at Yukon than
any of our issues. But that's not the camouflage so
(22:19):
that they don't have issues, because there's a lot of them.
Speaker 1 (22:21):
NBA insider Mark Medina our guest the Jason smithsho with
Mike Carmon live from the tyreq dot com Studios. I
guess you have to call it the undermining Mark Medina,
that he's the underminer like the Incredibles.
Speaker 5 (22:35):
Uh, call me the Anthony Davis whisper when he doesn't
feel like he's getting enough touchos.
Speaker 1 (22:40):
Right, Well, listen, are you the Jontay Murray whisper? Because
we saw earlier today the Lakers could potentially circle back
to obtain him. Now the trade season is starting to happen. Boy,
if they could make that, if they can make that happen,
because look, if the Hawks are really bent on starting
over again, and just like the Bulls seem like a boy,
(23:01):
I would go hard and heavy at Murray and just.
Speaker 3 (23:03):
Make it happen.
Speaker 5 (23:05):
Yeah, that's the thing. I don't think that the Hawks
will want to make Murray available. I think they'll want
to make Trey Ung available, and that's a good option
to have too. I think the Lakers should be interested,
but I think the challenging thing here is this. The
Lakers have three draft picks, so they have more assets
to offer starting NBA Draft Night, but they have the
same supporting cast and roster that they did last season,
(23:28):
and I don't think that's really enough. To really move
the needle. And I think ironically the Lakers have been
at the conclusion that they're always try to big game hump.
They're the Lakers. They're open to having a third star,
but I think that they will still always value roster
depth over that with Lebron James and Anthony Davis. And
(23:50):
so that's not to say that they're beholden to this
specific roster because they lost in the first round, but
I don't think that they're going to be comfortable with
parting with those raft picks and stripping down the roster
where they have someone like Trey Jung or even de
Jante Murray and then it's about filling the rest of
the roster with that minimum guys. So that's the challenge
(24:12):
that they have. It's gonna be a little bit easier
because they have draft picks finally to use, but it
could still set them themselves up with that same predicament.
Speaker 4 (24:21):
Now you mentioned the Anthony Davis touches and such before.
Mark earlier in the process it seemed like he was
enamored a bit with Brego, so you know, smoothing that out,
But in terms of roster management, I mean, he's truly
your one big asset in all this. If they don't gel,
is that something that we see become an issue as
(24:42):
this season goes on.
Speaker 5 (24:43):
Well, and think about this as may someone trying to
undermind JJ Ralph the pat He didn't give Anthony Davis
that Defensive Player of the Year vow right, so you
know he's already lacking confidence and his abilities as a
rim protector.
Speaker 4 (24:58):
No.
Speaker 5 (24:58):
Well, I think in all seriousness here, even though we
talk about JJ Reddick and the podcast with Lebron, I
think that all parties involved want to make it so
that Anthony Davis is the guy because Lebron James will
look a lot better having a less is more approach
at this stage of his career than him having to
(25:19):
be the lead guy. And that's not to say that
Lebron doesn't want to have his influence in the locker
room or have the autonomy to still run the offense
is he sees fit. But I think from a workload standpoint,
he wants it so that he doesn't have to play
as many minutes long, as much time, you know, as
(25:40):
far as his role, and the only reason that he
pushed back I think last season in prior seasons is
he didn't feel like the rest of the roster was
ready to carry that baton. But with how much better
we saw Anthony Davis last season, both with his health
and production, I think now is the time to do that.
Speaker 1 (26:00):
Looking ahead and seeing how things are going to fall.
Bronnie James is going to be a big conversation between
now in the draft where he goes.
Speaker 3 (26:07):
What winds up happening.
Speaker 1 (26:08):
You haven't been on sports Keta about it that you
put up in the last twenty four hours.
Speaker 3 (26:12):
How is this going to happen?
Speaker 1 (26:13):
And there's so much secrecy, so much cloak and dagger
stuff with Bronnie James and his draft position and who
he's working out for, who he's not.
Speaker 3 (26:21):
How do you see this going?
Speaker 5 (26:23):
It's really funny the reference I did with sports Keto
where I talked a few NBA executives around the league
that are familiar with the draft prospects. They strongly shot
down the idea that the Lakers would be trading up
just to get Brownie, that they're doing it just to
play Kate Lebron, and that any other team is having
(26:47):
this grand scheme about signing Browny with the hopes that
Lebron would go with them because they just didn't see
Lebron moving taking a significant discount. I think for the Lakers,
even though you know they want to keep Lebron happy,
they're not going to move heaven and Earth to do that,
and so they think that he's going to be available
(27:09):
at fifty five. I think, in fairness to Brouni, there
were people I talked to that see a lot of
positive things. His mental resiliency with over coming to cardiac arrest.
He's a team guy. You know the fact that Lebron
James is his dad. He has good influence as far
as basketball IQ. I think the question mark is he
(27:30):
doesn't have a definitive skill set, and I think because
of that, the feeling is he's a late second round
pick or he's going to be signed to a G
league contract, and look, Lakers have fifty fifth pick, so
that's probably what's going to happen. But I think it's
ironic in light of Rich Paul, and you know, he's
done wonders for his clients, does a good job for
what he does. But the comments that he made earlier
(27:52):
this week about you know, kind of warning teams that
Lebron's not going to take the minimum like it seemed
unnecessary because at least the people I talked to they
didn't think teams were scheming to do that to begin with.
Speaker 1 (28:06):
You can fall on Twitter at Mark g Underscore Medina.
That said, Mark g Underscore Medina the underminer who will
be undermining JJ Redick from day one of the Reddick
era in l A. Mark, thanks a bunch. You want
TV in LA this weekend.
Speaker 5 (28:20):
I am the CBS l A with Jim Hill Saturday afternoon.
And look, if any accusations get back to me that
I'm undermining JJ Reddick, the truth is is that Jason
Smith as the other.
Speaker 4 (28:36):
Yeah, I mean, here's the problem is there's audio recordings
of everything.
Speaker 3 (28:40):
That just transpired. Thanks.
Speaker 1 (28:43):
Of course, we're going to edit it to make you
look really out to get him like there's not there.
Speaker 3 (28:51):
We'll distort the voice a little bit. Yeah, let's go
have fun this weekend, buddy, We'll talk to you that
I was gonna say.
Speaker 5 (28:59):
I'm sure a podcast hash recording of this show will
be a source of conversation and JJ Reddick's next podcast.
Speaker 3 (29:06):
Let's go.
Speaker 4 (29:07):
As long as we get writer credit, that's all we're
looking for from these places.
Speaker 3 (29:12):
I'd say it. Man. Enjoy the weekend.
Speaker 5 (29:14):
I appreciate you, guys.
Speaker 3 (29:16):
I will undermine, we will underfind major I will undermine
the hell out of all of this.
Speaker 1 (29:24):
Oh that's the best, Hey, speaking of the best special delivery.
Steve de Seger, I'm sure is going to lead off
by telling you about a four hundred and fifty five
foot home run that was just hitting Major League Baseball
to the deepest part of center field in a very
specific stadium by a very specific player against his very
(29:44):
specific former team.
Speaker 3 (29:46):
Steve O take it away.
Speaker 7 (29:47):
Show, Hey, Otani and the Dodgers up to nothing on
the Angels top of the six. That long home run, Well,
he's gonna set the record for most Dodger homers going
over four hundred and fifty feet in the season. It's
only halfway through the season and this is his fifth
homer in six games. By the way, Otani with twenty
two this year that leads the National League and earlier Baseball,
(30:07):
we saw Atlanta pound the Yankees eight to one, Chris
Saal to win. He's ten and two for the Braves.
By the way, you guys were talking hoops. I mentioned
this on the earlier show. Did you see there is
a recruit for the Florida Gators for the coming season.
Speaker 2 (30:21):
Seven nine maybe seven foot nine.
Speaker 3 (30:24):
Yeah, he was like six three when he was twelve
or something like that. So there's home James.
Speaker 7 (30:31):
Yeah, eight years old. He was six to one. Yeah,
so eight three star recruit. Now his dad is six '
eight mom six foot two. Now he's the.
Speaker 1 (30:41):
Pictures of him playing in high school where he's just
standing under the rim, basically just handing the ball up
in it, and there's everybody else's looks like they're like
four feet tall, Like they have the hamburglar trying to
jump on top of him, saying, how did they ever
lose a game? He should be did this team ever
lose a game?
Speaker 7 (30:57):
I go to the Globetrotters.
Speaker 1 (30:58):
Now I go to the pay I turn around, You
pass me the ball. I turn around and I lay
the ball in and no one.
Speaker 3 (31:04):
Can stop me.
Speaker 7 (31:05):
Even if he only gets a couple of minutes, I
assume this will be the tallest college basketball player ever.
Speaker 3 (31:10):
He is a preferred walk.
Speaker 7 (31:11):
On, so not quite athletic scholarship. So we still have
a hockey season going on, gentlemen. Florida was up three
games to none, lost again tonight five one at Edmonton,
giving up a couple of empty netters in the five minutes,
the last few minutes, I should say. So, we're gonna
have a Game seven of the series at Florida on Monday.
It's been pointed out online and I remember the tweet.
(31:33):
It was about a week ago. We were about to
have an American team wrap up the Cup, and here
Florida has never won the Cup in its franchise history.
A Canadian team has not won the Cup since nineteen
ninety three. Donald Trump tweeted a week ago, Wow, the
Florida Panthers are a fantastic ice hockey team. They're three
to zero against Yeah, well, since then, they haven't even
led a game. He's the reverse Grimace. Can we say that?
Speaker 4 (31:57):
Nicely done? Not purple? What coloration are we giving him?
Speaker 2 (32:02):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (32:03):
Well some have said orange. The Edmonton Oilers fired their
head coach early this season. Let's not forget with a
record of three to ten at the time, they're not
only in the final, they're one game away from winging
and winging it all. They they're one of the rare
teams to even get on the list of Hey, they
were down three to zero in the series, and they've
at least forced a game seven, first team to do
(32:23):
so in the Stanley Cup Finals since nineteen forty five. Famously,
the nineteen forty two Toronto Maple Leafs were down three
to zero and wound up winning that series. And to
win as they did tonight, this is the first time
in Connor McDavid's great career with Edmonton that the Oilers
won the game where he played, but he not only
didn't have a point, he didn't have a shot. That
(32:45):
had only happened seven times, mostly in his rookie year.
They had lost every time until tonight. By the way,
the TV viewing of the previous game on Tuesday over
four million viewers for the previous Cup final game. The
full Stanley Cup postseason on the E networks is averaging
one point six million viewers. The Argentina game got over
(33:05):
a million on cable last night with FS one, and
also the Portugal game from the Euros this week one
point two million. For a day game on Fox. Men's
College World Series is averaging one point two million so far,
and last night's tribute to the Negro Leagues the game
Giants Cardinals on Fox TV from Birmingham two point three
(33:27):
to five million viewers. Well, the Yankees had seventy six
straight starts where their starting pitcher went at least four innings.
Speaker 3 (33:35):
Now back to back days.
Speaker 7 (33:36):
The starter hasn't gotten past the fourth and those starters
have allowed fifteen runs. Solo and Carlos Rodin took the
l against the Braves eight to one. Meanwhile, the Mets were.
Speaker 3 (33:46):
White Sox X White Sox night. They can't win at all.
Speaker 7 (33:49):
It doesn't matter, Chicago White Sox. This was referenced briefly
early in the show. Their game ended on a double play,
losing two to one at Detroit. It was a liner
to center and the runner at first for Chicago just
forgot how many outs they were. End of game. The
Mets won at Chicago today over the Cubs eleven to one,
beating show to Imanaga, a pitcher who was seven and
(34:09):
one with an ERA of one point eight.
Speaker 3 (34:12):
The power of Grimace is raised, run man, ju up
the whole run.
Speaker 1 (34:17):
And not that it's a big deal, not that you know,
say something that's not potentially serious, but the Mets all said, hey,
his fastball wasn't what it was the last time we
played them, and they sure enough. His fastball was down
like two miles an hour. And I think the Cubs
are going to look into that because you know, tired
arm something else. But when your fastball is lost, you
lose a couple of miles off your fastballs.
Speaker 3 (34:38):
Proud of them.
Speaker 7 (34:39):
A week with Yama Mood it was last Dodger start.
Speaker 3 (34:41):
Yeah, that's a big deal. Nor thank you, Steve, I
appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (34:45):
My friend, The Jason Smith Show is my best friend
Mike Carmon live from the tiraq dot Com Studios coming
up next.
Speaker 3 (34:52):
Yes, you are going to hear.
Speaker 1 (34:54):
And not believe how one team lost a game tonight.
Keep it right here, Jason and Mike.
Speaker 2 (35:00):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app
Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (35:11):
The Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike Harmon
yo live from thetirack dot Com Studios where, uh, well,
show he Tani just went deep four hundred and fifty
five feet. Yeah, first game against the Angels in Dodger Stadium.
Speaker 3 (35:27):
Okay, the Dodger to two nothing lead. Uh Dodger. Relieve it.
Speaker 1 (35:30):
Ryan Yarborough hit three batters in the top of the
sixth inning. Angels now tie the game up with the
Dodgers at two a piece going to the bottom of
the six Now that sounds crazy.
Speaker 3 (35:42):
Kind of dig that though. Yeah, guy at.
Speaker 1 (35:44):
Three guys in the inning, all on breaking pitches, right, Like,
It's not like he was the hit.
Speaker 3 (35:48):
I think he hit all three guys on breaking pitches.
It means they're not really doing a big job of
getting out of the way. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (35:55):
Oh well, no, no, no, no, one of the hit
batsmen really tried to do all he could still got hit.
Like he hit the deck and moved out. It's like, dude,
you gotta just turn and get hit man. Come on, look,
that's that's what I always teach the girls of softball. Listen,
I understand, I understand your instinct is to get out
of the way. But when the ball is coming at
you and it's not something coming at your head, you
(36:15):
just kind of turn and you know what, because you
know why we need you to do. And I snap
my fingers and they go, we need you to get
on base. I said, exactly, take one for your team.
Minute just just got to turn. If it's coming at
your head or something, I get it. But when it's coming,
you see, you just got to turn and let it
hit you, because why pay we get on base That
pain is temporary, glorious forever. Now, that would be a
(36:37):
crazy embarrassing story if that was the most embarrassing story
in baseball to actually, you know, guy hits three batters
in any that's a big deal.
Speaker 3 (36:45):
However, the answer to that is no.
Speaker 1 (36:47):
And much like you see on a late night TV
show when when the host and has somebody come on.
It's an actor who's got a movie coming out, and
he says, hey, said, you brought a clip from your
new movie for us. Set it up for us, And
the actor says, well, you know, my character is a
serial killer, and this is where my character decides he's
not only going to kill this person, but eat them after.
Speaker 3 (37:07):
I will say that slated quickly.
Speaker 1 (37:09):
But Mike Harmon, why don't you set up this next
clip we have for us here as the craziest, weirdest,
most embarrassing story in baseball tonight.
Speaker 4 (37:17):
Now the White Socks are down to one and we
go to the top of the ninth Foley in for
Detroit and rookie Colas strikes out swinging to start the inning.
And then you have a hit by pitch. So we
got a runner on tying runner is a board, one
on one outright, one.
Speaker 3 (37:36):
On, one out, and then we.
Speaker 1 (37:38):
Got this set up there again Ben and Tendy gives
it a ride for center field.
Speaker 3 (37:43):
Matt Fierling makes the catch.
Speaker 2 (37:45):
They thought it was well, they thought there were two out,
that's gonna be a double play.
Speaker 3 (37:49):
Oh my goodness, one away there in the game.
Speaker 5 (37:51):
The Tigers win, and the White Socks have yet another
play that typifies their season. Two to one.
Speaker 2 (37:59):
Tiger, thank you very much.
Speaker 3 (38:02):
I mean I can't. I was like, wait a minute,
I thought there's a there's one out.
Speaker 2 (38:07):
How is the world does this happen?
Speaker 3 (38:12):
Here?
Speaker 2 (38:12):
You go.
Speaker 4 (38:14):
The White Sox broadcast squad Gordon Beckham in there instead
of just Steve Stone.
Speaker 1 (38:20):
So you get that, you know, And here's the thing is,
is I get on certain levels when you don't know
how many outs there are, you need to be reminded sometimes,
but in Major League Baseball, but specifically in the ninth inning,
when you're on you know, okay, you got it, Okay,
there's one you gotta know that man, you can't get
(38:40):
doubled off first base. That'd be the final out of
the game. Really, I feel like, I mean, you got
to go look at this is Monty Williams coaching the
White Sox. I mean, has he gone right from the
pistons of the White Sox.
Speaker 3 (38:52):
Hey, you got fired for now I'm coaching the White Sox.
Like what's happening. But it's it's not like you were
gonna score like you know.
Speaker 4 (39:01):
Second third, you get caught up because you're desperate trying
to fight makeing the final out that way. Uh, And
it really and it's a veteran player at that and
so it's not like a kid, not not a rookie DeJong.
Speaker 3 (39:17):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (39:18):
Quote mental laps in ninth proves costly for Socks. That
is the the headline at MLB dot com. I mean
that he's an eight, your veteran, he's eight, your guy.
Speaker 3 (39:29):
I mean, that's just that's just incredible. It's just it's
it's incredible.
Speaker 1 (39:32):
That not that if it happened during the game, Okay,
I understand. And because we've seen stuff like this in
the fourth or fifth inning, the whole the whole team
thinks there's two outs and after a ground out, they all.
Speaker 3 (39:43):
Come off the field. But this is the ninth inning.
This is the awesome of the ninth inning. Man.
Speaker 4 (39:47):
It's also a thing you get doubled up on on
what you think is a ball that's gonna drop in
the hole, right, you know that outfield, there's no way
he's gonna get there, and then they make a great
running catch, diving catch, whatever, and you've crossed the rubicon
because you're you're running. Uh yeah, we've seen that, but
just forgetting on a routine fly ball.
Speaker 3 (40:09):
How many outs are in an inning.
Speaker 1 (40:11):
And it's not And it's not like it's been an
inning where crazy things have happened, Like we had a
bunch of walks and a stolen base and there was.
Speaker 3 (40:17):
A fight at us and then they were hit by
a pitch. Yeah, I mean that's you had.
Speaker 1 (40:21):
You had an out and you had a guy on base, right,
you were the guy on bank.
Speaker 3 (40:25):
You saw the guy in front of you strike out.
You got hit. That's all that's happened so far. That's
all that.
Speaker 1 (40:30):
You weren't a pinch runner going into the game and
you forgot you got hit, and you went to first base.
One guy hit before you. I mean, this is just buddy,
I don't know, Man, you may need to disband.
Speaker 3 (40:40):
Dude.
Speaker 4 (40:40):
I get it with that eighty seven on base percentage,
he's not used to those situational fits.
Speaker 3 (40:45):
But I mean, I don't know. I don't think the
White Sox can finish the season.
