Speaker 2 (00:23):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Were you sitting in
last night too, Arnie? When was the last time you
were in this seat? Was it last week? Christmas week
for Smith and Harmon?
Speaker 3 (00:37):
Yes, I did Christmas, the day after Christmas and a
little bit before Christmas.
Speaker 2 (00:46):
Is it affusing?
Speaker 3 (00:47):
Yes, it was a very confusing question.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
I thought it was pretty straight up all right back.
Speaker 3 (00:52):
By the way, well, the only reason you got me
Bobo's texting a friend of mine who works at Fox
Sports Radio and he is at the Fiesta Ball Okay,
and he's about to get in his car and drive
over to the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles. How great
is that? By the way, who's good? How many people
get to go to two of the you know, four
(01:13):
playoff games? So I was asking him how full was
He says it was about eighty five to ninety percent fall.
So there was a good crowd out there because I
thought I saw that it was empty and they blocked
off the upper tier. But I was completely wrong.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
So well, I'm about hey, yeah, I'm shoy. I'm with you.
They haven't shown it at all. I figured that would
be kind of a big deal, right right right.
Speaker 3 (01:33):
He said there's people up there. There's no doubt there's
people up there. So he said, matter of fact exactly,
he said eighty five percent. I think maybe a little
bit more.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
And he's actually leaving the game now to get a start.
He's going to drive halfway and then stop a little
bit like in Blythe, California because it's expensive for you know,
hotels around the Rose Bowl. Yeah, and then make the
trick to the Rose go and get ready to watch
that game.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
Right off. That is Colorado River Reservation there in Blythe.
It's a five hour and forty one minute drive from
Phoenix to Pasadena.
Speaker 3 (02:08):
Yes, that's not too bad. That's a piece of kid
at all.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
Glad whomever this unknown Fox Sports radio cohert is that
he is stopping to get some rests. And I mentioned
that we're coming to you live from the tire rack
dot Com studios. Tire rack dot com will help you
get there an unmatched selection, fast free shipping, free road
hazard protection, and over ten thousand recommended installers. Tire rack
dot com the way tire banks should be. I asked
(02:33):
just about being here in this slot, because I think
you were right back in hour one. There are some
juice tonight on on the X. There are some juice
tonight from the Fox Sports Radio Army. I mean, there's
good stuff from top to bottom. Maybe there is more
people that are sitting in this year, like Matt who writes, Yes,
Arnie you throw up during every show. It's called your picks. Well,
(02:56):
that seems to be wow of a cheap shot.
Speaker 3 (02:59):
I didn't even see that one. I didn't even know
we'd just see that one.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
I just came in at stinking to your wanted plank show.
M Ryan, Yes, Arnie throws up during every show. It's
called Arnie's picks. My man, I don't know why it's
you know, technology, We're gonna up there go a bit challenging.
I'm not creative enough to make up a tweet. Paul Wrights.
I turned forty last night. The last month I'm too
(03:24):
old to crash on a buddy's couch or waiting hours
for a new ber. You guys are stuck with me
in my fifty tweets tonight, Happy New Year. Okay, okay,
it's funny put that out.
Speaker 3 (03:35):
I'm usually like that.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
You're usually what, like the person that would just crash
on the couch.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
No, you know, just stay at home and do nothing.
But I turned on the TV earlier today and by
the way, are they gonna why are they going to
continue calling it Dick Clark's Rocket New Year's Eve? Can
we no disrespect to Dick Clark? But you know, a
lot of the young people don't even know who the
hell he is. He's been dead for what decadors?
Speaker 2 (04:00):
What would be your guests on when Dick Clark passed away?
I'd say fifteen years ago twelve, And remember there was
there was some uncomfortable moments whenever he still hosted the
Dick yeh New Year's Rocket Eve?
Speaker 3 (04:13):
Right exactly exactly. But I was thinking, I'm like, you know,
it would be nice to go down the Times Square
and hang out for New Year's Eve. I would do that.
I would have some fun with that. No, he would
maybe next year. Maybe next year at can I call
you from the if we were, if you were doing
a show and go Chris Ibouty here in Times Square, I.
Speaker 2 (04:32):
Think we'd be able to hear with the craziness that's
going on. It's kind of cool though, because you mentioned
not really having big plants and at our age, not
you know, necessarily partying like we once did. But every
every so often my studios are at my home and
I got like a detached We're doing this live from
a garage, and every time I go in, there's my
(04:53):
two daughters sitting there with my wife and the dogs, like,
oh look at this. I you losers don't have anywhere
to go but New Year's Eve. It's always nice whenever
you know where everyone is right, and it's always nice
for us to remind you that some of you are
listening right now. Maybe on the West coast you've started
your pregame. On the East coast, you're getting ready for
that midnight kiss Central time zone. Maybe you're going from
(05:16):
one party to another. But allow one statement to ring
true throughout the next two hours, of the next twenty
four hours, or however long you plan to celebrate twenty
twenty five and beyond. Don't drink and.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
Drive, man, No, do no.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
There's so many options that you have out there right now.
Lift uber, a taxi, cab, calling a friend, sleeping in
your car, whatever. Don't make a decision tonight on a
night that's supposed to be about new beginnings and a
fresh start that's going to ruin your entire life or
potentially ended. So be smart, party, enjoy it. However you
(05:49):
celebrate the new year, do not drink and drive. Give
me a little mister PSA.
Speaker 3 (05:54):
Man, I love it. I can't say it better than that.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
Jason B. Diamond said the Dodgers winning the twenty twenty
four World Series was the best moment of my entire life.
Listening to Arnie and Plank is a close second. That's
a good life you're living, Jason. That's a good life.
And Sean has accepted his award. My man at Shady
Sean Ford twenty apparently his birthday might be April twentieth
(06:18):
has accepted his award. I think maybe self proclaimed, but
you know who's here to blame him as listener and
tweeter slash exer of the Year. Congratulations, well deserved. You
won the Award in my book. Oh, Boise State gets
a big play here, it's gonna be too little, too late.
They convert on a third and thirteen, they'll push the
(06:39):
ball into Penn State territory.
Speaker 3 (06:41):
Boys, these State fans look too I get like, they
are right, you're gonna win the game, you know what
I mean. They're like, yeah, man, we're gonna win the chair,
and they just look so bummed out.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
It's thirty one to fourteen in this football game tonight.
Penn State cut it to a one score game. They
forced a three and out on the first drive for
Penn State in the third quarter. On the next drive,
five plays, eighty three yards in two minutes and twenty
(07:11):
eight seconds, Penn State seventeen, Boise State fourteen. From that
moment forward, here's the offensive drive chart for Boise State. Interception,
missed field goal, interception, and Penn State went out tacked
on a touchdown, another touchdown, and it's where we are today.
(07:34):
Just too many mistakes. Man, that's going to be the
story of the game tonight. Yeah, Boise fans might feel
like they had a chance to win it, but I
felt like this was going to be a game that
would be about trying to slow down Ashton Gent. He
just now got over one hundred yards. I've had to
give him the ball thirty times to do it, and
Penn State's done a good job of slowing him down.
So number one, I think Penn State's won that battle.
(07:56):
And the number two is turnovers. And right now Penn
State is plus two against a Boise State team that
had protected the ball well all season long and not
turn it over. But you cannot give a Penn State
team like this one more opportunities when you're a double
digit underdog, and Penn State is going to advance in
the semi final. So let me pay off my teams.
Speaker 3 (08:16):
And by the way, I think I'm gonna stick with
it what I said now we're number one, because it's
looking more and more true now, mister Gent, welcome to
a real defense in Penn State. I thought they did
a pretty good job against him. I know he had
over one hundred yards, but thirty carries three point five average.
They did about as great of a job as you
could do against a great running back like him.
Speaker 2 (08:37):
Did you do you ever? You don't? I literally just
said that.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
No. I have to reemphasize I have to reemphasize things
that sometimes you don't make a good point on.
Speaker 2 (08:47):
Right, You're right, You've got to clear up my point
to me because you just literally said the exact same
thing that I said about So I moved my hands
from left to right again. That works, that's fine. Yes,
he never listens to me. This is what's going and
teach I might as well just be speaking into an
empty room. With that in mind, Penn State now advances
to the semi finals. They'll await the winner of Notre
(09:08):
Dame George in the Orange Ball on January ninth. Do
you base now their path wasn't the most brutal, Right,
They get SMU, they get Boise State. Two teams that
I both deserve the shot in the playoffs, but two
teams that they were double digits favorites against. Right, that's
not you don't usually get into a playoff setting where
you're a double digit favored over a team in any sport.
(09:29):
With that in mind, you consider them a championship contender.
In other words, you look at them and say, hey,
I could see Penn State winning the national time.
Speaker 3 (09:37):
Oh of course, actually brought this up when the rankings
came out, and we said let's look at the path
that Penn State has. Sure they get an easy SMU team,
and I'm saying easy for the most part, playing Boise
not world beaters, and then of course after that they
could either get a team that has a brand new
(09:58):
quarterback or Notre Dame, so eventually you have to play
somebody good. I thought they had the easiest path to
the finals out of just about anybody out there. Really,
out of anybody out.
Speaker 2 (10:09):
There, you think that their path was easier than Texas's.
Speaker 3 (10:14):
Well, Texas did have Clemson in the first round, so
that's that was a little bit of a pushback. I
remember that was a one possession game in the fourth.
Speaker 2 (10:21):
Well that was a four loss Clemson team.
Speaker 3 (10:24):
I understand that, but it was still one position game
in the fourth. And Arizona State's actually a lot of
people saying underrated, so they could put up a good
fight against Texas. But Texas is still going to have
to play the winner of the Ohio State Oregon game,
so that that's a major, major game.
Speaker 2 (10:39):
You would rather see the Ohio State or or you
would rather see the Notre Dame Georgia winner than the
Ohio State.
Speaker 3 (10:44):
Or absolutely, one hundred percent are you wrong on that.
Speaker 2 (10:47):
I don't know. Notre Dame looks prett damn good man.
I think Notre Dame is going to be Georgia tomorrow,
and I'll probably change my mind two more times over
the next three hours that were on the air. But
I really like Notre Dame a bit a lot. But
here here's the other thing, though, you say, Oh, Texas's
path is more challenging. Where does Texas play in the
semi finals if they get there. They played in the
(11:07):
Cotton Bowl, That's right, where's Cotton boll? Right, Dallas so Arlington. Yeah,
I mean so you're in a really good spot if
they get there. But Penn State just gets another interception.
So that'll be ballgame. Thirty one to fourteen is going
to be your final score, and Penn State will advance
to the semi finals of the College Football Playoff. And
I wonder, I wonder if this gets people off James Franklin's.
Speaker 3 (11:31):
I was just about to ask you that they know
they're gonna say no, it doesn't now, because all they
did was beating the SMU team and the Boise State team.
You have to beat a blue blood that's a top
five or top ten team for us to get off
your backs, and they're one hundred percent right, know, this
shouldn't get them off his backs at all.
Speaker 2 (11:49):
James Franklin in big games, right, that that's always kind
of been the knock on him, right, James Franklin in
big games against top ten teams like something. Oh yeah, yeah,
I mean I was I had the number written down
here and I'm not gonna. I'm gonna I'm not gonna
rifle through at all. But uh, he's just been in terrible.
(12:11):
He's been terrible. But the good news is whenever, whenever
you're squaring off against teams that aren't on a green,
they're unstoppable. Three and seventeen against top ten teams. Wow,
his career three and seventeen. So and in fact, I
think you you add in that that might even be old.
(12:32):
I think he's three and eighteen because the loss in
the Big Ten Championship game.
Speaker 3 (12:37):
So he said one in eighteen for some reason, but
probably three in eighteen.
Speaker 2 (12:41):
How dare you short him those two wins that he.
Speaker 3 (12:44):
Don't want to do that, that's for sure.
Speaker 2 (12:46):
Which which, by the way, one of them came against
Utah in the UH in the Rose Bowl, and right exactly.
He just he's he's never really had the success against
Michigan and Ohio State that you need to have. But
here they are, one went away from playing for national championship, Like,
(13:07):
how do you how do you compartmentalize that? I get it,
they had a smoother path, but they still got to
go win the games, right. I get it that they
lost to Ohio State in their biggest game this year,
but they didn't lose again the rest of the season
outside the championship, the Big Ten championship game. So I
don't know what to make of this. I don't think
(13:28):
they're one of the best forward teams in college football,
but they're gonna be one of the final four teams.
And it's hard to dispute what they've accomplished against the
competition that they faced.
Speaker 3 (13:39):
Do they lose both their quarterbacks next year? Is that
what's going on?
Speaker 2 (13:41):
I was coming back, Okay, that's why the other dude
entered the portal.
Speaker 3 (13:45):
Yeah, but then I was here in rumors that hour
may go.
Speaker 2 (13:47):
Also, I don't know, he came out and said he
was coming back. So I mean, I know you have
the best sources on the interweb because you've got all
the NFL RMRS, Twitter Feed and mL football, these very
accurate sights that Arenady turns to for all of his
football mets. So you might be onto something. I'll tell
you what. If I was a quarterback and I was
(14:08):
a fringe first second round pick, I'd be turning pro
this year.
Speaker 3 (14:12):
Well, I just thought that Penn State was the one
that maybe was giving yours sixty million dollars to transfer
up the Penn State or something. Sixty I mean six
sixty six. I'm not mean. I didn't mean sixty six.
I don't know where I got sixty six million. I'm sorry,
six million.
Speaker 2 (14:27):
I thought Colin Coward told us that it was a
Notre Dame.
Speaker 3 (14:30):
It could have been Notre Dame very well could be.
It probably is Notre Dame.
Speaker 2 (14:34):
I have a wild take for you. I don't think
anyone's offering that kind of money. I think he's going
to turn pro because I think he's smart enough to
realize that. If you look at the NFL draft right now,
who's the slam dunk first round picks? Shad Or Sanders
and Campbell were right right, that's it. You think only
two quarterbacks can get drafted in the first round whenever
you're probably looking at like nine to ten teams that
(14:56):
might want a quarterback. Heck no, and they'll we're spinning
like if I was yours man, I'd be jumping at
the draft if I was you know who I think
should jump. Jalen Milroe needs another year of development. I
think we learned that watching him, right, But Jalen Milroe
is gonna go to the combine and drop jaws. He's
gonna wow it because he's an athletic freak, and I
(15:17):
think he could shoot up draft boys like Anthony Richardson did.
Now that hopefully you'll be a little bit better than
Anthony Richardson. So I hear what you're saying. You know,
Alrais said he's coming back to Penn State next year,
but maybe someone gets in his ear and is like, bro,
you could be a first round pick this year.
Speaker 3 (15:32):
The story I was giving you that hour was thinking
about leaving, that they were taking a good look at
him in this game, and that the Penn State could
be without both quarterbacks. That's the reason I asked you
that I was in. I can't find the story. That's
why I was. I was hoping you saw it. So
they'd be without any quarterback for next year.
Speaker 2 (15:50):
Yeah, and the report was from SI. Drew Aller has
announced that he's coming back, but the rumor is that
many NFL gms think that he may still enter the draft.
Speaker 3 (16:00):
Right, Okay, so there you go. So but they're not
I think it's Notre Dame that's if it's true, is
the one that's giving yours six million dollars to go
up there? And I do think that's true. I, by
the way, you could make more money Notre Day for
one years. I do, and you can make more money
for the.
Speaker 2 (16:15):
One you're hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on,
hold on, hold on, hold, hold on home.
Speaker 3 (16:20):
Why why can you make more money? No?
Speaker 2 (16:23):
No, no, why do you think that's true? What what
would leave that?
Speaker 3 (16:27):
There?
Speaker 2 (16:27):
Dame is sniffing around Quinn yours at all?
Speaker 3 (16:31):
Well, you saying they don't need a quarterback or they
don't want to give that type of money.
Speaker 2 (16:35):
Well, they'd come out and they've said that they're not
going in the portal to get a quarterback and they're
going with their young guys that they brought in.
Speaker 3 (16:43):
Well, I always thought it was Notre Dame that would
come up with that type of money to get that
type of quarterback. I don't know who else is offering
six million dollars.
Speaker 2 (16:51):
Yeah, yeah, I agree, But the other thing is, how
do we know that number is even real?
Speaker 3 (16:57):
Right?
Speaker 2 (16:58):
College football is such a min to bleep right now
because you hear all these rumors about the amounts of
moneys that are being offered, and you see, uh By,
for instance, I sent you that thing, but vod has
got a list on Quinn Youwer's next team that he's
going to play for if it's not Texas, and it's
ten to eleven that it's Notre Dame, right, I think
that whatever odds, who.
Speaker 3 (17:16):
Would have leaked that rumor? It would have been yours camp.
That's the way you think. So well, who else would
have ked the rumor like that?
Speaker 2 (17:24):
I have no idea someone wanting clicks? I have no
Because the rumor was that it was Michigan State. It
started that it was Michigan State sniffing around, right, us right,
and then all of a sudden, you know, Colin goes,
I hear, Notre Dame is sniffing around a big time
portal quarterback, but he didn't say yours, and everyone thought
it was Milroe. So I kind of think Quinn you
is just going to turn pro. I think he's going
(17:44):
to be a bet. I think he's going to be
a pretty good NFL quarterback. I think he's better than
Arch Manning. I think he's significantly better than Arch.
Speaker 3 (17:50):
Can you make more money making six million in college
than you can be in a what second or third
round pick?
Speaker 2 (17:58):
You can in your second contract, and you definitely can
if you're a first round pick?
Speaker 3 (18:05):
Right right?
Speaker 2 (18:06):
How about this? Is there a chance in the draft
by a final score Penn State wins it thirty one
to fourteen? Instant reaction coming up here with the Jason
Smith Show. That's Arnie Spaniel. I'm Chris Plank sitting in.
Are you a believer?
Speaker 3 (18:20):
Then?
Speaker 2 (18:20):
Maybe Dylan Gabriel could be the number three quarterback heading
into the draft.
Speaker 3 (18:23):
Oh I like him a lot also too.
Speaker 2 (18:25):
The only reason he's an Oregon right now is because
he got a bad draft grade last year. So how
hilarious would it be if he goes to Oregon? Hey,
he played for and win a national championship and he's
a first draft pick after going back to school because
he got a bad draft grade the first time around?
Speaker 3 (18:42):
Right right? Well, look, at the year that he's had too,
and look at the ranking that Oregon has. That's a
big part of it too.
Speaker 2 (18:49):
All right. When we come back to the tire rack
dot com studios instant reaction to Penn State moving on

(20:39):
I'm at Plank Show. Julian checks in and says, I'm
working tonight. Great way to bring in the new year
with you guys. My best moment of the year the
Dodgers beating the world. And by the way, Kyler Murray
does not have what it takes to get my Arizona
Cardinals into the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (20:55):
Oh, it's such a great about.
Speaker 2 (20:59):
Where did that come from?
Speaker 4 (21:00):
From?
Speaker 3 (21:00):
What the Kyler Murray getting traded story?
Speaker 2 (21:02):
Right? I mean it's Bavada put odds out that the
Steelers would be his next team, right, and one of
the aggregate sites jumped on it. But I have not.
I mean, is that a rumor that's out there that
he's on the block, because if he is, go get
him Tom to LESCo. I think he's I think he
could be great. I know that this is blasphemous to
say within the realm of Ben Mallar's airspace to talk
(21:25):
about how I think Kyler Murray could be a pretty
good NFL quarterback, But I think i'd take him over
any of the guys in the draft this year.
Speaker 3 (21:31):
I give you, well, you know what, You're right, one
hundred percent. I would take him also, and I'm afraid
to say this, I think I would take him over
to him.
Speaker 2 (21:45):
Well, TWOA doesn't play, so you got to have a
quarterback to play.
Speaker 3 (21:48):
That's the only not bother him because two of his
statistics are phenomenal. And I love Tua, but I can't
start worrying about the concussion and the hip.
Speaker 2 (21:56):
Now that's right, that's right. What you get what cost
him his final year of college is his hip?
Speaker 3 (22:01):
Right. Yeah. I was on the air the night he
got hurt with his hip and got taken to the hospital.
Speaker 2 (22:10):
Against was it?
Speaker 3 (22:11):
Was it?
Speaker 2 (22:11):
Vanderbilt, Mississippi State? Someone who was it? You were on
the air, you should know.
Speaker 3 (22:16):
I don't remember.
Speaker 2 (22:18):
I think it was Mississippi State. I think it was.
I think it was. Hold on, we're gonna find this
out before we go anywhere else.
Speaker 5 (22:25):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (22:26):
They're saying that this current hip injury is in no
way related to his Alabama injury because.
Speaker 3 (22:33):
It was a championship game or something like.
Speaker 2 (22:35):
A ah, look at you, look at what is good.
You should listen to me more. You refuse to listen.
Speaker 3 (22:45):
You know this. I think it was against Mississippi State.
Though that's a joke. That's a joke.
Speaker 2 (22:50):
Julian adds, I really do think that the college system worked.
It makes all the significant ball games that much better.
Ralph writes the lesson for Arnie, less aggregate sites, the.
Speaker 3 (23:03):
Better, No more aggregant sights, the better.
Speaker 2 (23:06):
Paul rights, is it worth leaving college early if you're
quinn yours, if you're going to get drafted by the Jets.
Speaker 3 (23:13):
You know, everybody can't go to a great situation. When
are you gonna say to yourself, I think I can
help turn the Jets around. I'm okay going to the Jets,
or I'm okay going to Carolina or I mean, are
we gonna use this excuse? I don't want to go
to Carolina. I don't want to go to the Jets.
I don't want to go to Las Vegas. I don't
want to go to put whatever team is on the
(23:33):
bottom of Jacksonville. I mean, you can't say that to
ten teams because they have I don't want to go
to New England. I don't want to go here. I mean,
you can't be doing that, Chris. I mean eventually you're
gonna go to a bad team.
Speaker 2 (23:46):
I I would never ever, and I've never heard anyone
that doesn't want to play for the Raiders. What are
you talking about?
Speaker 3 (23:54):
That's true?
Speaker 2 (23:54):
That's true, David and Seattle checks any rights? Do we
start off tomorrow with an easy Texans win and five
and zero on non competitive playoff games? And I think
Penn State loses to anyone in the playoffs except SMU.
You know, Boise.
Speaker 3 (24:10):
I'm surprised that I'm getting that type of response. And
I saw what Colin just put out like three minutes ago, saying,
could I just get one good game? Please? Just one?
I thought this was a good game. Okay, perhaps it
wasn't closed, but like you said, Chris, it was seventeen
fourteen in the third right, seventeen was a one score game.
Speaker 2 (24:30):
It was a one score game. And then the third
quarter in the third quarter, Yeah, that's anybody's game right there. Well,
but again, great, they played it way right.
Speaker 3 (24:39):
They pulled away, but still it was I mean, Boise
had a chance to take the lead. I thought it
was a pretty good game.
Speaker 2 (24:46):
You're very guilty of this, and you I don't think
you realize it. Okay, because again I love you, we've
worked together for over a decade now. But if you
don't have a buzzer beater, right, I like, this game's terrible. Gas.
I think there's people like that with college football. Did
he come down to the last possession?
Speaker 3 (25:03):
No?
Speaker 2 (25:03):
All right, well, the game wasn't close.
Speaker 3 (25:05):
When I didn't know that, the Boise State kicker has
kicked the third most field goals in NCAA history, and
he missed through tonight miss too.
Speaker 2 (25:14):
It's crazy, right, ooh one badly too? Yeah, the one.
The first one was terrible, the second one block pretty tight.
I could tell block seemed like it almost seems like
they had to with how bad it was, right, And
then one more quick tweet here before we get to Sagarin,
Brandan writes my twenty twenty four sports wise has been
a mixed bag. On one hand, the Raiders blow did
(25:36):
not having a quarterback? Tell me about it, Brendan, Then
the Lakers and the Kings choking the playoffs. On the
other hand, the Dodgers won the World Series and the
Galaxy won the MLS Cup.
Speaker 3 (25:46):
The Galaxy. Don't forget that when.
Speaker 2 (25:47):
Brendan and I are like kindred spirits here we have
all the same favorite teams except the Galaxy.
Speaker 3 (25:51):
Right, and I also sent you the one where somebody
tweeted out, this is what happens when gent doesn't play
against the community college.
Speaker 2 (25:59):
So it's a It's one of those pictures of somebody
wearing a football uniform that shouldn't be wearing a football uniform.
Speaker 3 (26:09):
It's already in play, but everybody's saying that what happens
when you play a real defense.
Speaker 2 (26:14):
Well, when they play a team that isn't a community college,
is right? All right? Steve Sager is in the house
because it is a final. The Penn State Nittany Lions
are moving on to the college football semi finals. Into
Saga has the latest.
Speaker 3 (26:28):
What's going on, Steve, I'm letting the Saga go home
early because he wants to go party at some bar tonight.
Speaker 4 (26:33):
Not true and not true, but.
Speaker 3 (26:36):
Party like a rock star party.
Speaker 4 (26:40):
By the way, you were talking Jets.
Speaker 5 (26:42):
I looked up all the Jets draft choices of quarterbacks,
specifically since Gino Smith a better decade ago. They have
drafted Taj Boyd Clemson, Bryce Petty Baylor. Jets have drafted
Christian Hackenberg Penn State, Sam Darnold USC, James Morgan FIU,
Zach Wilson BYU, Jordan Travis Florida State, all in the.
Speaker 4 (27:06):
Last decade or so.
Speaker 3 (27:07):
Yeah, that's not going to cut it.
Speaker 2 (27:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (27:09):
My theory going into this research was, well, Sam Darnold
getting drafted by the Jets kind of through his whole
career back a few years. That's been proven, but the
other day didn't pan out.
Speaker 3 (27:22):
I said to that story that the Jets and Rogers
are parting way after the year. Whered I get that story.
Speaker 2 (27:26):
From NFL R mrs. Is that is that a real sight?
I don't think so.
Speaker 3 (27:32):
Oh that's such a good story though.
Speaker 2 (27:35):
Yeah, but it's from at U Stadium. Oh, I'm sorry.
This was from JPA Football And of course the wording
is very generic. Steve. It says the Jets are expected
to move on from both Aaron Rodgers and DeVante Adams
this offseason per U Stadium.
Speaker 5 (27:51):
Anything that would be just a Rogers story, you have
a fifty to fifty chance that's right, So give it
a shot. By the way, you were talking earlier about
TV ratings the Monday Night Well, last night, the Monday
Night football game Lions forty nine ers. It aired on
ESPN and ABC, so twenty two million viewers.
Speaker 3 (28:13):
Wow, that made it the most.
Speaker 5 (28:17):
Watched Monday night football game of this season. Twenty two million.
That's still not what Netflix was getting for the twenty
four million for the Christmas games.
Speaker 3 (28:26):
Not Netflix number real.
Speaker 5 (28:29):
Then it's not quite the Nielsen TV channel type of ratings.
So I'm not sure it's quite apples to apples, but
it's anything over twenty million, even in the NFL realm
would be very significant. Fox last Sunday got twenty six
million viewers for that Packers Vikings window and the college
football that you were talking about earlier, those standalone first
(28:51):
round games, the Friday night and Saturday night one got
thirteen million viewers. One got fourteen million viewers, which is
phenomenal for anything that's not the even the BYU blown
out Colorado last week and that was eight million viewers.
Speaker 3 (29:05):
But this one won't get any because it's on New
Year's Eve.
Speaker 4 (29:09):
Mike was saying, Yeah, we'll see.
Speaker 5 (29:10):
What's going to kill this weekend is that finale with
the Vikings and the Lions that's deciding the number one
seed in the NFC and ending the regular season in
the NFL. By the way, the non playoff bowl game
so far up over fifteen percent in the ratings compared.
Speaker 4 (29:26):
To a year ago.
Speaker 3 (29:28):
Nobody going, so it was a watch.
Speaker 5 (29:29):
Penn State won the Fiesta Bowl, a playoff quarter final,
beating Boise State thirty one fourteen. Ashton gent thirty carries
one hundred four yards rushing in the loss. Boise State
through three interceptions in the second half a total of
twenty three penalties in this game, drew Alar three touchdown passes,
two to tight end Tyler Warren, who was named Offensive
MVP tonight. K Tron Allen one hundred thirty four yards rushing.
(29:53):
Penn State is thirteen and two three quarterfinals tomorrow, including
starting off the three the Peach Bowl on New Years
Texas playing against in Arizona state team that's won six
in a row, and ASU coach Kenny Dillingham reportedly has
a new five year contract.
Speaker 4 (30:08):
In bowl games.
Speaker 5 (30:09):
Today in Tampa, Michigan beat number eleven Alabama nineteen thirteen.
Michigan was up sixteen nothing first quarter. In Orlando, Illinois
won the Citrus Bowl over South Carolina twenty one seventeen.
Josh McCray thirteen carries one hundred and fourteen yards two touchdowns.
At the Sun Bowl, Louisville a thirty five thirty four
winner over Washington. The Cardinals stopped a two point pass
(30:30):
in the final seconds. Louisville scored a touchdown in the
opening minutes on an interception return for Washington. Giles Jackson
four t d receptions. Louisville defense though with five sacks
today and the Texas Bowl in Houston went to LSU
over Baylor forty four to thirty one. Garrett Nosemeyer three
touchdown passes and one pick six. Baylor had over five
hundred yards, had over thirty first downs, but wound up
(30:52):
losing by double digits. The Dallas Cowboys cut running back
Ezekiel Elliott forty nine ers. QB brock Perty as a
bruised elbow. He'll likely missed the finale on Sunday with
nerve inflammation. The Patriots wave pass rusher Yannick and Gakway
don't forget. In the NFL, Saturday, Baltimore hosts Cleveland. Baltimore
clinches the AFC North and the number three seed with
a win or a tie, or with the Pittsburgh lost
(31:15):
Saturday nights against the Bengals. In the NBA, the late
game is done. It's a win for the Memphis Grizzlies
at Phoenix one seventeen, one twelve. Jahn Morant out again
with a sprain shoulder. He's weak to week. Guard Devin
Booker of the Suns did return from the groin injury.
Did play, but was four of twenty shooting from the floor.
Cleveland when it's eighth straight beating the Lakers in LA
(31:37):
one twenty two to one ten. Cleveland's record twenty nine
to four. Oklahoma City won its twelfth straight game one thirteen,
one oh five over Minnesota. Shay Gilgis Alexander forty points
victories from Milwaukee, San Antonio and Boston today beat up
Toronto one twenty five to seventy one. The Celtics scored
eighty points just in the second half. Toronto's lost eleven
(31:59):
in a row, with the record at seven and twenty six.
Joel and b to Philadelphia is out Wednesday.
Speaker 4 (32:05):
For Rest.
Speaker 5 (32:05):
Miami's Jimmy Butler will return tomorrow after illness. In college hoops, today,
West Virginia one at number seven Kansas sixty two to
sixty one on a free throw with about one second left.
The NHL wins from Montreal in Dallas and at Wrigley Field.
Saint Louis a six to two winner at Chicago.
Speaker 3 (32:20):
Back to you, my Happy New Year. The sagur Well,
you better not call him sick on Sunday, but you
drank too much tequila tonight, so yeah, I'm.
Speaker 4 (32:28):
Not a chance of that happening.
Speaker 2 (32:30):
Well, me, it is Tuesday. I mean, how much you
know get so we can get with us to.
Speaker 4 (32:38):
Actually might not even.
Speaker 5 (32:40):
Be having eggnogg today. Actually, I'll be up early for
ASU Pacific time.
Speaker 2 (32:44):
Did you. By the way, speaking of eggnog, I think
my my my favorite story that I saw was the
Syracuse football coach. They couldn't give him, Fran Brown. They
couldn't give him the uh, the eggnog bath because he's
allergic to eggs here maybe or maybe it was the
Mayo bath or whatever it was.
Speaker 4 (33:03):
And also when he didn't win, he wasn't taking a
bath period.
Speaker 2 (33:06):
That's right, So I mean he probably might have actually
looked forward to it. But all right, hey, happy New Year, Steve.
He'll have updates for us at the top of the hour.
But yeah, Brown is allergic to eggs, and he couldn't
get the the egg wash and the celebration of their
of their Bowls championship. So there you go. I'm allergic
(33:30):
to eggs. That might be my excuse for anything that
I don't want to do from here on out.
Speaker 3 (33:34):
All I'm allergic to it.
Speaker 2 (33:35):
I can't do that all the time.
Speaker 3 (33:37):
Like when my wife cooked for me, I got I'm
allergic to I can't have that. I'm allergic to that.
Speaker 2 (33:42):
Don't you want Brussels sprouts. Can't face will puff up
dry chicken.
Speaker 3 (33:47):
No, I can't do that.
Speaker 2 (33:48):
My face will puff up on things. All right, We
got put some postgame audio that we'll still get to
from this Penn State Boise State game, but to put
a final thought on it, at least for this hour, Arnie,
before we look ahead in our next segment to the
games Manyana, or in the case of the Eastern time
zone in twenty minutes from noun Happy New Year. Coming
(34:09):
up today, Arnie, Penn State seem as a team that
can raise the trophy or just a team that got
a pretty smooth path towards the semi finals.
Speaker 3 (34:17):
I think they've got well. I think both. I think
they did get a smooth path to the semifinals. I
think they can win it all. The fact that they've
had two games where they pulled away, well, they were
in control of the SMU game and pulled away from
the Boisey game, which is good. It shows they can
overcome adversity. They'll be feeling good about themselves. They'll play
(34:38):
either a Georgia team that's getting used to their new
quarterback or Notre Dame team who can be upset. We
saw Northern Illinois do it Obviously, I like Penn State's path.
I think it's real good. By the way, If you're
asking me, though, should Drew a lure leave because of
his performance? All he did have three touchdowns, no interceptions,
(34:59):
but doing the yards passing only thirteen completions At times
he certainly looked rocky. I don't buy no. Yes, if
they're telling you to come out because you're gonna be
the third quarterback taken or the fourth quarterback taken, I
understand that just based on the game Chris, even with
the three interceptions, I would say I'm gonna pass and
(35:20):
I'm coming back for another year. But I would understand
if he's going based on the money and where he's
gonna get drafted.
Speaker 2 (35:27):
Yeah, it's again, this is a weird quarterback draft because
you have a lot of quarterback needy teams, but you
don't have a very deep quarterback class.
Speaker 3 (35:36):
No, not at all.
Speaker 2 (35:38):
You have two slam dunk first round. So Drew Aller,
if you're wondering why we're bringing it up because you're
a Penn State fan or you follow college football, like
he said, he's already coming back. NFL general managers feel
like he is gonna still turn prep and usually whenever
there's smoke, there could be a little fire there. I
still think he's coming back. But if I was him
and they wouldn't speaking into that first round, I'd be
(36:00):
going pro.
Speaker 3 (36:00):
If you win it all, wouldn't you want to go
pro after that? Wouldn't that be your highest value after
winning a championship?
Speaker 2 (36:08):
Maybe maybe I would probably go because I don't know
if I could do much more Penn State after that.
Speaker 3 (36:14):
It's like we you can if you win a championship,
you can't do much more.
Speaker 2 (36:17):
I'm off to the NFL. But maybe that's why they
think that. Maybe they think the Penn State could be
a team that sneaks in and whin the champions Do
you think.
Speaker 3 (36:23):
This game was a good enough sampling of him saying, yeah,
there you go, NFL, look what I can do?
Speaker 2 (36:28):
Or I thought I thought the big ten championship game
was I didn't think this was.
Speaker 3 (36:33):
I think if you look at the three touchdoutns no interceptions,
that is big though.
Speaker 2 (36:37):
Why stats?
Speaker 3 (36:40):
Just the fact that you're not going to make the
big mistake in a big game.
Speaker 2 (36:44):
Well, and and a couple of those catches were by
incredible plays by your NFL first round pick tight and
Tyler Warren. Yes, I think he showed in the Big
Ten Championship game that he can be and no, no
one outside of the late great Al Davis was basing
how they viewed a prospect on the Bowl game only,
So keep that in mind as well. One thing that
happened tonight, history was averted. Barry Sanders still holds the
(37:08):
old time record for rushing yards in a season at
two thousand, six hundred and twenty eight. Ashton gent finishes
at two thousand, six hundred and one. But remember, as
our man Jason brings up on Twitter, Barry Sanders set
that record in nineteen eighty eight in eleven games. That's right, unbelievable.
All Right, when we come back to the Tirack dot
(37:30):

(38:13):
thoughts from Penn State's thirty one to fourteen win over
Boise State. If you're big on numbers, Boise State actually
out gained Penn State tonight, four twelve to three eighty seven.
If you had I would have not had my Maddox
Mattson throwing for three hundred yards. But here we are.
Of course they needed to because they fell behind late.
(38:35):
Ashton genty gets over one hundred yards but doesn't break
Barry Sanders record, and running the football just solid from
Penn State. Arnie forty one carries two hundred and sixteen
yards five point three yards per carry, plus three in
the turnover margin. They're moving on to the semi finals
next week against the winner of Notre Dame in Georgia.
Speaker 3 (38:53):
Yeah, I mean, look, Penn State was the better team.
They did a better job moving the ball, though Mattson
had the three interceptions. That was I mean, that was tough.
Without that, maybe maybe it's a little bit closer. The
not only that, the fumble, the penalties. Too many things
set Boise State back. Would have loved to see what
(39:16):
would happen if they didn't have so many turnovers, If
they could have overcome it, it might have been a different
game at that point. Maybe it would have been coming
down to the last second. And then the two miss
field goals from a field goal kicker who's been fantastic.
Everything went Penn State's way. They deserved it, But let's
not lose the fact that they played Boise in SMU
(39:38):
to get to this point. It'll be a lot tough
for next game.
Speaker 2 (39:41):
Seventeen to seven. Game at the half, Boise Forces at
three and outs.
Speaker 3 (39:46):
Could should have been it should have been fourteen seven.
Speaker 2 (39:49):
Why what?
Speaker 3 (39:50):
I think they got lucky that Boise didn't pick up
the first down and they were able to get the
ball back and drive down and get the field goal.
Speaker 2 (39:58):
Oh oh, I see what you're saying. Oh okay, well
it was seventeen to seven, and then they forced a
three and out did Boise on the first drive for
Penn State in the second half. Then they went and
scored and made it a seventeen to fourteen game their
next three possessions on offense for Boise State. After Penn
State answered with the touchdown and make it twenty four
to fourteen, Boise State went interception, missfield goal, interception. By
(40:20):
that point, it was ballgame. Hey, listen, people are gonna
hate on Penn State. You're right, because they're gonna say,
keep in mind, keep it in perspective. They played Boise
in SMU, but aren't they still won the games? Right,
they still advanced. And I'm telling you what, they're gonna
be a problem. They're gonna be a problem from whoever
it is, Notre Dame or George in that semi final game.
And if Texas wins tomorrow morning, Arnie, they're gonna be
(40:42):
an even bigger problem because you have to worry about
playing them basically in a what's probably gonna be a
home stadium at the.
Speaker 3 (40:48):
Kay they get to walk to the stadium. Why you
take a whole another flight from Penn State, Pennsylvania all
the way back then.
Speaker 2 (40:57):
Well, Texas is going to play the winner of Ohio
State Oregon.
Speaker 3 (41:00):
Oh okay, there you go.
Speaker 2 (41:01):
Yeah, yeah, got that. But no, no, I see what
you're saying. You're gonna have that advantage big time with
Texas if they can win tomorrow. Now, real quick thought
before we go all in on the NFL next segment,
or he got about a minute left in this hour,
well thirty seconds, you see any updates or any upsets
potentially tomorrow in those three games you got Arizona State.
I guess Oregon's an underdog or notre name pulling it off.
Speaker 3 (41:23):
I like Oregon out of the fight. There's my one
underdog I think could.
Speaker 2 (41:26):
Win, which is an unfair underdog because they're the number
one overall exactly, they're underfeed. They've been the best team
in college football all year, and somehow they're an underdog
to a team they beat last this season. Make it
make sense? Our three coming up next. Happy New Year
on Fox Sports Radio.
