Well one game in the books on Opening Night, which
means now the rest of the country, we're all gonna
get to see the Warriors and the Lakers. The Thunder
hold off the Rockets in double overtime one twenty five
to one. Twenty four thanks to Kevin Durant fouling Sga
(01:15):
in the dying seconds of double ot he fouls out
of the game. He should have just kept walking to
the locker room because KD that was awful. Sga, of
course hits the two free throws and the thunder win
it one twenty five, one twenty four, you know, And
that's the thing is Kevin Durant's been around a long
time obviously, right, And what you're watching him defend SGA
(01:35):
in this final play, and he's doing a really good job,
and Sga is trying to get buy him, dribbling back,
trying to get buy him back. This is a phenomenal
job of one on one defending. But you're Kevin Durant.
You have to know SGA wants to get to the
free throw line, right. I know you saw him hit
a shot to tie the game to send it to overtime.
I get it. You wan't want to stop that, but
(01:57):
it's like KD couldn't help himself, right, you can see
you got it. Right, Whenever a guy is doing all
those moving and back and forth and try you know
that he is just waiting for you to make a mistake.
He's not confident in his shot. He's not confident with
what he wants to do. Do I want to get
to the rack? Do I want to pull up for
a shot?
Speaker 3 (02:12):
No?
Speaker 1 (02:13):
And you know Sga makes his living at the free
throw line. This is what he does. And so when
I watch KD, I'm like, he's playing great. And then
he lunges, and of course Sga, because he's such a
smart player, jump right up into him, gets the foul call,
goes the free throw line, and hits two. And I
want to walk off and tell Kevin Durant, dude, you
know better, man, you know better than to do that.
(02:36):
I had some rookie on on yourself, but you know
better man, You know you know you got him. And
not only that, you know how this play is going.
You know you have him. And he's not full of confidence, right,
And he's gonna put him some kind of crazy off
balance shot, or he's gonna try to dribble to the
side and put up a different kind of off balance
shot from fifteen foot maybe on the inside of the elbow,
(02:56):
and it's not a great look, but still he couldn't
help himself. And I lunge out at him and he
goes up absolute foul. Katie should have kept walking. I
knew it. I blew it for you guys. I'm so sorry.
I'm walking out. I shouldn't stay here anymore because we're
gonna lose, because I couldn't help myself.
Speaker 4 (03:14):
Oh you see, Shongoon is just the body likes of
No you bailed him out. You did all that work
to leave your feet and bail him out to let
him go to the foul line. Now, he did miss
four free throws over the course of the night, but
of course money when it matters, twelve to twenty six
from the field, one of nine from three point range
(03:35):
was Gildas Alexander in this one doesn't matter. Thirty five
points and the game winning free throws in the season's
tip off as they celebrate Ring Knight, Banner Night and
all that other stuff and they get the hard fought
w That was just demoralizing, though, if you're a Rockets
player and you're on the court and it's like that
(03:55):
much work that Kad did and then I got got
Of course, I wish you would have just slapped him,
you know, one of those Hey do something with the
ball already, you follim follow him.
Speaker 1 (04:06):
I mean, don't bail him out like that. He Katie,
you gotta know better, man, you really, you gotta know better.
But he's getting forty five million a year, Nay, one
game and we give it to them, And it would
have been such a huge win for the Rockets coming
off as off season where hey, maybe we're taking that
next step. But no, Fred van Vliet really at just
a very shocking story in the middle of the off season.
(04:26):
Wait a minute, it's done for this. We're not gonna
get Fred van Vliet means a huge deal. This guy
makes the engine go. They could have come in and
wanted the defending champs court opening night and suddenly, hey man,
we're we're feeling good. And instead Kevin Durant gives them
the win and I get that they're gonna push. Hey,
we pushed the defending champs the double overtime. We should
have been no, no, no, they they would have had
(04:49):
It would have been an incredible start for them. Don't
bury us. Everything is great, and instead it's wow, you
just played right into their hands and he made a
huge mistake.
Speaker 4 (04:57):
Yeah, I mean, you can celebrate what Shingoun did thirty
nine on the night thirty nine, eleven and seven. He
was twelve to twenty four in the field, five of
eight from three and took care of his work at
the foul line. But Durant Lake, we talked about it
after the third quarter, he took what two shots, yeah, yeah, three,
three shots, three shots for the At the end of
(05:18):
the game he was two of three, but four from
three point land And obviously the big gaff and giving
into what SGA wants to do with the basketball and
the closing minutes of a game.
Speaker 1 (05:31):
Now the other big story tonight. Obviously we've just gotten
to the game two the Warriors and the Lakers. Warriors
lead at thirty seven to thirty one, six and a
half to go in the second quarter. Luca is off
to a great start for the Lakers. I think he
had nine points in the first eight minutes. Very chippy game.
You're in the second quarter and now we're getting this
game on NBC. And as Steve Desager brought this to
(05:55):
us a half hour ago, and what's trending, it's a
new world order now right Like first hour of the show,
we talked about, Hey, NBA is back on NBCCE and
we talk about the pageantry and how great it was.
But this game goes to double overtime. And normally when
ESPN has the game, T and T has the game, hey,
they hold it as much as they can. But hey,
you can see this game over on ESPN two until
(06:18):
this game ends, and we'll flip back over. Go turn
it over on ESPN News, Go see it over here.
This game is on ABC, whatever it is, there was
always a place. Hey, if I want to see the
beginning of this game, I'm gonna get to go see it.
But now this is a new again. They' spent a
lot of money for this for the next decade. This
is stuff you just have to get used to. I
(06:39):
can't tell you any more than that. They're not going
back to the old way. As slowly as time has
gone on the last couple of years, we are we
are edging more towards it where pretty much everything's gonna
be on streaming at some point. This is your NBA
life with the NBN NBC. You want to see a
game when it's a national game and the other game's
not over yet, it's gonna be streaming and that's the
only place you're gonna get to see it. Right, It's
(07:00):
gonna be on streaming, and that's it, and you gotta
wait to see it. Now. It's not gonna be every
night where Hey, this game goes to double overtime and
so you don't see the entire first quarter, but for
the opening night for it to happen tonight, it's a
real rough. Hey, get used to it right away. Out
of we ripped the band aid off right out of
the gate. You want to make sure you see all
these games. Gotta have stream You got to pick your
streaming services. Gotta see what you want. This is NBN
(07:22):
NBC for the better part of the next decade, and
this is what it's gonna be. You want to see
the game, Hey, gotta have streaming. Well, welcome to Peacock.
I mean, come on, I mean you're looking at all
the movies that you get plus your NBA action. I mean,
right now, you can watch Megan two point zero. You
can watch the classic Universal Monsters. I was watching The
Wolfman the other day. Well, Row Bellamy was in there,
(07:44):
wolf Man. Did you watch in Hollywood? The Hell's Beaks
Hollywood and wolf Man? We went like this, like this
went that way? Where do you go? Nicely done?
Speaker 4 (07:55):
I mean you can watch all those cool forty two
dollars horror movie that's the budget for like Popeyes, Revenge
and all of that kind of stuff, And to.
Speaker 1 (08:03):
Make the movie was forty two dollars.
Speaker 4 (08:05):
I'm giving it abscribing of value, but I mean all
of that and that's somebody. You can watch How to
Train Your Dragon. I mean, you got all of that
hour and you had Lakers Warriors to start.
Speaker 1 (08:15):
If you had it. Now, Frostburg, what what's it costs?
Speaker 5 (08:17):
Now?
Speaker 3 (08:17):
You want?
Speaker 1 (08:18):
You want to see these stuff? You have the numbers
over there right, Well, this is not including the Knicks
because obviously they pay you to watch. Oh hey, James
Dolan's gonna come key your car. Just wait, just wait.
I really hope he does. He's gonna do playing harmonica.
He's gonna key your car playing the harmonica. Yeah, it's
gonna be It would be the greatest thing to ever happen.
That would be good. But yeah, it'll cost a total
of six hundred and fifty dollars this season to watch
(08:39):
every NBA game across all services.
Speaker 6 (08:41):
Woo.
Speaker 1 (08:43):
That's a lot of money. Man, It's a lot of games.
But that's a lot of money. But that's just it.
Speaker 4 (08:47):
It's like, you know, when we did that math with
the NFL once upon a time, I had the Bears
and I had when whatever game was either the forty
nine ers or the Cowboys and maybe an AFC game
mixed therein.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
And I was okay, yeah.
Speaker 4 (09:03):
And and most folks, I don't think they want to
consume every game.
Speaker 1 (09:07):
No, and that, but that and that's the thing, and
that's why the model for the NFL, which is you
buy the package for out of for out of for
out of market games, and you buy the package on YouTube.
Now it's been the last couple of years, but you.
Speaker 4 (09:19):
Got to pay the eighty two bucks a week right
right right right YouTube TV YUS plus the NFL PAS
and it's.
Speaker 1 (09:25):
A and it's a it's a you know, a six
month thing or a four month thing. The overall value
you get because it's a Sunday, it's one day. It's
all the games, it's your friends are coming over. And
it's a one day thing. Right You're still getting the
Sunday night games, Monday night games, there's a night games.
You're watching those, but it's a one day thing. And
it's if I miss it, I miss basically all of
(09:46):
the NFL, right that I don't get to see maybe
I like red Zone, maybe I I want I want
to flip around and see all the games.
Speaker 3 (09:52):
You know.
Speaker 1 (09:52):
They they have the four box now on YouTube where
you can see four games at once, sometimes even more.
Sometimes you get to see all the late games at
once when it's when they're on TV. But one day
a week, and it's a sweet spot because the NFL
can charge that because okay, it's four months, it's four months,
and it's it's a one day. It's Sunday when you're
sitting around doing nothing and you're watching TV, or it's
a day of relaxation. But for the NBA, I don't
(10:16):
think anybody feels like they're overserved or they're underserved with
the NBA. Right, it's a highlight league and it's okay
you Adam Silver said, yeah, do I need to spend
that kind of money? Or can I watch the highlights?
Or can I watch my local game? Maybe I get
a late game. There's so many games every night right
the NBA, we talk about it. They have Opening Night
for a month. Right, every night from now until the
(10:38):
middle of November through the middle of November is Opening
Night because we get great matchups and all of this.
Do you really need to see all of them?
Speaker 3 (10:45):
Right?
Speaker 1 (10:45):
That's the thing is that is the demand there for
you to have to see all that the NBA has
to offer, or can you pick and choose? Right when
the commissioner says we're a highlight league, I know right away, Okay,
I don't need to spend all that money because I'll
just see the highlights. I'll find a way to see
the end of a game, or I'll follow it on
a computer. Maybe I'll just have an app that I
can get there and see the end of a game.
(11:05):
But like this, this this is a really big test
for what people are going to actually shell out and
pay for with the NBA because now, okay, this is
the first year where you're seeing this national product. You
now have to go places to go get it. And
are they gonna get is it gonna grow? Is it
gonna be something that that people are gonna want to consume.
(11:25):
It's a big ask for Yes, it's a lot of games,
but it's also a lot of money for a product
that many fans can say, Yeah, I get my fill
of the NBA every week, Right, I get the highlights,
I get the storyline. Stuff off the court is just
as entertaining stuff on the court. Sometimes if I miss
a couple of buzzer beaters, I miss a couple of
buzzer beaters, I see it on Twitter a minute or
(11:46):
a half later, and I'm okay with it. I don't
know that there's so much MUSTYTV in the NBA that's streaming.
Is something that can be a big home for the
NBA because there's so many games. Something I've used before,
but we'll circle back. Yesterday was we commemorated the what
would have been the seventy fifth birthday of Tom Petty.
The song the last DJ ahead of this time as
(12:09):
we celebrate mediocrity, all the boys upstairs want to see
how much you'll pay for what you used to get
for free. Mike, Mike Drop, Yeah, Yeah, I mean really,
because sometimes sometimes I get it where Hey, we had
we had a great run in the fast lane and
it was free for a long time, and now we
have to start to start paying money. Right, So, whenever
(12:31):
you used to go to a mall, you would just
park and go in. I'm parking and going in. But
now you go to a mall, you gotta pay and
sometimes you know, sometimes they validate, sometimes they don't. But
you still want to go to the mall. So I'm
gonna pay now twelve dollars where I used to park
for free. Okay, I'm going to the mall.
Speaker 2 (12:45):
Do that.
Speaker 4 (12:45):
That's the same here you were paying. Yeah, it was
just a matter of it was fractionalized, right. You didn't
have to decide between all the different streaming services. You
had your cable package and if you looked at it,
that's why you always had those fights over what what
you were paying for. Yes, but I don't watch that channel.
I'm paying two dollars a month for what I'll be
I'll be right.
Speaker 1 (13:03):
I have a lawn. What are you doing? I don't
care about better homes and gardens. I'll be really interested
to see just how the streaming product goes with the
NBA and what the ratings are with the downloads are,
what the streams are, if we get told the truth,
because boy, it's a lot of product and no one
feels like they're underserved with it. It's a really it's
really again when the commissioner says we're a highlight league, Okay,
(13:24):
oh that means I gotta see all the games. No, No,
it means you just gotta see the highlights. Six point

five Golden State with the lead over the Lakers. Two
minutes to go before halftime. Remember no Lebron, James Knight,
Luka Doncic carrying the Lakers so far, Skinny Luca. It's
a nice five point game. Yeah, yeah, no, I mean no,
(16:47):
it looks good. I didn't know what we're gonna get,
but yeah, he seems to be into However this game ends,
much will be a storyline. Yeah, it's fun. It's been chippy.
They're like in mid season forms.
Speaker 4 (16:59):
It's good and there were a lot so much media
assembled for Skinny Luca like a playoff game, so a lot.
Speaker 1 (17:04):
More NBA on the way. But joining us now, I'm
the hotline to take a look at the World Series.
Nobody better than MLB Network insider extraordinary John Paul Morosi.
He is on Twitter at John Morosi and I know
it's a tough day for you, John Paul. I want
to say thank you for joining us. After explaining to
your dad somehow how the Tigers and Tarique school Ball
(17:25):
are two hundred and fifty million dollars apart, and likely
the Mets are going to trade for him, So I
know it was a tough day. Thank you for joining
us on the show.
Speaker 3 (17:33):
It is only a matter of time, my friend, it
is only a matter of time before he is in Flushing,
Queens pitching for your team. But he is not pitching
for the Mets or the Tigers in this World Series.
There are a couple great ball clubs that will be
contesting this Fall Classic. And before we go any further,
I have to say that I should have trusted my
(17:55):
hometown team more. I gotta admit that right away the
Bucks would win. I was wrong, and the Lions. For
the first time this year, I picked against him and
was humbled in the process. So maybe maybe they will
be uh contesting in football's version of the World Series
(18:17):
later on, but we are several months away from selling
matters matters there.
Speaker 1 (18:21):
Well, I'm see, I'm okay with all that because you
just told me that the Mets are going to get Schooble,
So I'm okay with that. You can say whatever you
want to if you really think that's gonna happen, that's great.
Speaker 3 (18:31):
Well, not not imminently. You have to wait for that
one too. I don't think it'll be this offseason, but
maybe it's a deadline maybe next off season. The Mets,
I'll tell you this, the Mets have some issues the
likes of which Schooble alone will not solve. The Mets
(18:52):
have some issues that go beyond one starting pitcher. But
there is time. Indeed, well we can we can reconvene
the Mets therapy sessions really on a weekly basis if
you want all the way through the fall and winter.
So well, we will make sure we do that after
the final out of this world series is recorded, which
I think, by the way, those that are forecasting a
(19:13):
breezy second straight championship for the Dodgers, I think have
not been paying close attention to the American League payoffs.
Speaker 4 (19:20):
Smith really adept at getting his own needs in, so
we got the Mets talk in.
Speaker 1 (19:26):
So let's let's get to the how are you two
hundred and fifty million dollars? Apart from Tarik school?
Speaker 4 (19:31):
Like anybody, they want to give him a dollar, he
wants two hundred and fifty million dollars.
Speaker 1 (19:35):
I mean it's not hard. I mean, how are you
that far away?
Speaker 3 (19:39):
What's the quarter of a billion dollars? On?
Speaker 1 (19:42):
That's right? Between friends.
Speaker 3 (19:43):
Absolutely stopped us before, never stopped us before. But as
you may have surmised, I have I have returned home
from my travels there of the American League Championship Series,
a great series, classic classic Game seven. And by the way,
we are having this conversation on the fiftieth anniversary of
(20:04):
the Carlton Fiscal actually able to talk to him last
week about it. I felt as though this was like
a very long, extended postgame interview from fifty years ago
that I was if I was on the field, if
they had if I had been alive, and if they
had had a sideline reporters back in the day, what
would I have asked Fisk in that moment. So that
was a lot of fun. By the way, one of
(20:24):
my favorite notes, and I would recommend the full podcast
at some point, wrote Cooper down, is that the production
team actually had to explain to Robin Williams why that
game was such a big deal. So obviously Matt Damon knew,
but they had to say, okay, Robin Williams, sit down,
we got to explain this. So, you know, Robin had
(20:46):
the connection to the Giants and as a baseball fan,
but did not really know just how important that game
is in the lore of New England. And so that
was my favorite detail that puch Fitz told me that, yeah,
they Matt Damon said that they had to coach up
Robin Williams on how important that whole game was, had
to go see about a girl, the whole story that
they had to actually coach him up on that a
(21:07):
little bit. That was probably my favorite part of the conversation.
Speaker 4 (21:09):
But to that conversation with White Sox all the famer
Carlton Fiska.
Speaker 3 (21:16):
And we covered that too, We covered that part of
his he played for Bolt Socks. There was obviously the
Red Sox didn't quite value him in the proper way,
and then he went on and became a legend with
the other color of stockings. But again, let's let's maybe
get back to what I was trying to say at
the outset, which is I think that the Blue Jays
(21:41):
are going to present the toughest lineup that the Dodger
pictures have had to deal with. And I also think
that their rotation is in some ways a mirror image.
Obviously they're all right handed, but has that same approach,
A lot lot of splitters, a lot of power stuff. Now,
(22:03):
Trey and Savage, what a sensation he's become as a rookie.
He starts Game six. I don't know how you get
any more confidence to what Trey Savage has right now
to be able to start an elimination game at home
and and help this team deliver the win there. So
I'm I am bullish on the Jays chances they may
have actually stumbled into. Chris Bassett is a legitimate bullpen option.
After he pitches the eighth inning last night, Jeff Hoffman
(22:25):
gets the final three outs Vladimir Guerrero Junior and ascended Starr,
He's able to have a huge postseason. Springer has the
big home run last night. So yeah, yes, and well
I'm not going there.
Speaker 4 (22:40):
It's still part of our history here and with the
Dodgers waiting on him.
Speaker 3 (22:44):
Well, the Dodgers, the Dodgers v. George Springer, that's a
real one. That is a real story, no question about it.
Then I'm sure Dodgers Stadium will be ready to But
I look at these two teams as being very closely matched.
I still probably believe it's gonna be the Dodgers, but
it's gonna be six games and not the three and
(23:05):
a half that some people think that seemed to be
a possibility.
Speaker 1 (23:09):
Well, I'll tell you, John Paul, we talked about this
last night. So you were talking about the first big
bold predictions. While I think in the World Series, no
matter how you slice it, I think the Dodgers lefties
absolutely feast in this series off of the Blue Jays pitching, Otani, Freeman, Muncie.
It's gonna be like this. These are going to be
the guys that carry the Dodgers in this World Series.
Speaker 3 (23:30):
Yeah, And I think to your point that, well, first
of all, the Mariners had cal Raley, and now the
Dodgers have maybe not some of that hit sixty homers
this year, but they've got multiple left handed threats, and
I think it'll be interesting to see exactly how Dave
Roberts separates those lefties out. Obviously you can go Otani one,
Freeman three and handle it from there. I mean, you're right.
(23:54):
I think you're gonna have to see one. One neutralizer
often is the split split is a neutralizing pitch from Gossin,
from you Savage obviously Bieber his stuff. Really I thought
ticked up what you saw from there in Game seven
some good sliders. So I think in general you're right
that the lefties, whether it's a young Mason flu Hardy,
(24:17):
is going to have to, I think have the series
of his life now. He, of course, back on August
the tenth, truck out Otani and Bets to end the game,
which is the reason why it's the Jays and not
the Dodgers with home field advantage. How about that, Bason
flu Hardy, go back, look at that play by play,
bass is loaded one out situation. Flu Hardy comes in
(24:38):
and it's Otani Bets and he strikes them both out
and the Jays win the game and they finished with
one more win than the Dodgers this year. Pretty interesting
story there. So I do think flu Hardy is someone
that we're going to see probably a good amount of.
They may actually change up a bit of their their
late inning approach, maybe one more, but maybe they find
(25:00):
a way to get Nance back on there. I do
think Little is someone that they don't probably have a
ton of confidence in based on what happened in Seattle
in Game five. But probably the biggest adjustment to the
roster is going to be Bobaschett coming back, and I
think he's probably going to be a tin shitter type.
I would say that it's unlikely that you're going to
see George Springer starting in the outfield right now, especially
(25:22):
after the knee situation that he went through in the ALCS.
So my expectation is Springer stays in the DH role
and bo is there to face Alex Vesia in a
big spot.
Speaker 4 (25:34):
Well, and that becomes the curiosity, right how deep can
you get into these games with the Dodger starters? Last
round wasn't look obviously the three home runs by show
Aotani in the clincher, but the offense still looking to
break through as a whole. But for the Dodger pitching,
got to imagine Dave Roberts has to go to that
(25:54):
Bengo card a little more frequently.
Speaker 3 (25:57):
Yeah, well, and too think about just how dominant the
rotation was, especially in the first two games in the
series against Milwaukee. Nell was unbelievable. Yamamoto unreal And that's
the benefit. And we've been debating this since the beginning
of time in baseball, which is rest versus Russ and
maybe at the beginning of time. But I think can
get the idea last hundred years or so, and I
(26:19):
think you discuss that the Dodgers, I think it will
maybe be a bit of an adjustment for them where
they're walking into Rogers Center and the Jays just won
this emotional game they've had. They've really cranked up the
whole bit advantage. And now the Dodgers, after having several
(26:40):
days of just workouts and kind of clinching early and
clinching fast against the Brewers, they've got to get right
back into this super high intensity environment. So I like
the Jays chances to win one of those first two games,
even though they're going to be facing Nell and Yamamoto
with the benefit of extra rest. The one thing you
would say is it with Snell, the Jays did not
(27:03):
encounter a lefty starter in the Alcs. It was, of
course alrighty's and so I think that you know this
will be again. Snell is not a generic lefty obviously,
but but for the righty bats in Toronto's lineup, maybe
it results in some better at bats even even more
production from guys like Springer. Those writings are really vital
(27:26):
to the Jay's success here in this postseason.
Speaker 1 (27:28):
Yeah, you mentioned the starting pitching, and it's something we've
talked about the last few days where it's almost it
almost reminds me this with the Dodgers and the Blue
Jays have a bit of warning for the Dodgers of
the twenty fifteen World Series, where the Mets just pitched
hot knife through butter through the cubs and then you
get a little bit of a bounce in the World Series,
you defensively you're not as strong, and suddenly look at
the Royals winning the World Series. But like, I feel
(27:50):
like that's gonna the Dodgers can't expect to pitch like
they did in the NLCS. They're probably gonna get a
little bit of a bounce. However, maybe they're a baut
to starting to wake up, and I got a sneaking
suspec they're going to just hit the crop out of
the ball those first couple of games in Toronto.
Speaker 3 (28:04):
Yeah, it's it's retally, it's a good hitting environment, good
hitting ballpark. That's but that's that's the big question, right,
is a little more unfamiliarity. They've got no familiarity with
your savage beyond seeing them on TV and seeing them
on the video wise, So that's it's certainly now you've
got the project machines and all these different fancy things
that teams can do to get even better looks at
(28:26):
at at pitchers. But I think that when you consider
the way the Dodgers have hit in this postseason you
mentioned earlier, it's not as though they've been the twenty
seven Yankees is putting up all kinds of runs here
and there. They've they've been winning because they're pitching, really
And I think it's actually a pretty interesting comparison that
you make to the Mets Royal series because the Royals
(28:49):
that team. First of all, they didn't have anybody offensively
who was clicking quite like Biddy has been in these playoffs,
but they did have a very good contact oriented team.
And I think my favorite stat, you know, Buster only
mentioned this, I think during the ALCS at this point
in time, I believe Laddie is that six homers and
two strikeouts for the whole postseason, six homers and two strikeouts.
(29:12):
So if you've got guys that are putting the ball
in play, and the Jays do a pretty good job
of that, they can bump when they have to. This
is the type of team that I believe would would
give the Dodgers some fits. And I think the Dodgers,
obviously they strained a bit more to win that series
against the Phillies they did against the Brewers and the
(29:34):
Phillies I think in some ways have a lineup that
that is a little similar to what Toronto has. But
I think in some ways Toronto's lineup is the best
in a postseason setting that the Dodgers will have faced,
and they're gonna have a real challenge here. I think
this is gonna be a very very tight series that
goes at least six games, and I think there's gonna
be a lot of really fun storylines emerging. Of course,
(29:57):
you've got Freddie Freeman, his parents are both Canadians, and
you that story two tasker Andandez facing his former team.
A lot of really cool notes. In addition to the
fact that Boba Schett, what kind of stage will that
be for him to come back ideally for the Jays
into some kind of a role in the World Series.
It's it's gonna be special Canada hosting the World Series
(30:19):
for the first time in more than thirty years.
Speaker 1 (30:23):
He's on Twitter at John Morosi, That is at John Morossi,
MLB Network insider John Paul will talk to you after
game one and get your fearless lines picked for this weekend.
Get you back on the road to winning.
Speaker 3 (30:35):
Yeah. I appreciate it that. I think I'm probably gonna
have to pick the Lions to win, just as soon
as I figure out who they're gonna play and the names,
the names of players and the team beyond Jared Golf.
But I've only lost one, so I've been feeling pretty
good about it.
Speaker 1 (30:50):
It's okay if you pick them not to lose this
week because they have a buy. I think you're gonna
be fine. You'll be fine this week. You'll be fine
to say no way, you guarantee they won't lose this week.
Speaker 3 (30:58):
You guarantee still talk baseball after the game board of
the World Series.
Speaker 1 (31:05):
I think that's a good idea, John Paul, we'll talk
to you after game one. Look forward to it.
Speaker 4 (31:10):
I like that he transitioned to I was like, I
was only coming.
Speaker 1 (31:12):
On from my allons, Kate, what are you going to do?
Let's do baseball a little bit of that? Uh time
not to find out what's trending in the wide world
of sports. From someone who's been called the Blake Snell
of Fox Sports Radio. You can find him after the
show tonight playing Twitch answering questions. It's Steve Disager.
Speaker 6 (31:29):
I thought it's because they told me you have to
defer money.
Speaker 1 (31:32):
Oh yeah, well, well that's separate conversation, separate conversation.
Speaker 6 (31:36):
I'm just assuming I'm not going to get it from
this place. By the way, he referenced that the La
Dodgers had that. We brought this up last night on
the show. They had that weekend series in August hosting
the Blue Jays. Dodgers were going for the weekend sweep.
The bullpen blew the Sunday afternoon game, giving up two
homers in the eighth one and the ninth. The ninth
(31:57):
inning he was talking about bottom of the night. Dodgers
wound up leaving sixteen men on the base that day
and because of that day, they finished with one fewer
victory than Toronto. So the World Series starts in Canada
Friday night on Fox TV Toronto hosting the Dodgers and
Yes in Game one, LA says it will start pitcher
blakesnew then Yoshinobu Yamamoto to start Game two in Toronto
(32:20):
on Saturday night. Freddy Freeman today was asked about the
layoff the Dodgers after a four game sweep with a
full week off before Friday night finally arrives He pointed
out that last year, the LCS finished for the Dodgers
on a Sunday and then they had to wait the
five day work week until a Friday night game one.
Speaker 1 (32:38):
We did have game one.
Speaker 6 (32:39):
Of the regular season in the NBA Tonight, Opening Nights
started at defending champion Oklahoma City. They got their rings
pregame and then the game went double overtime. OKC edging
Houston won twenty five one twenty four Jay Giljos Alexander
thirty five points, including the game winning free throws. Apparently,
it had been twenty years since we had had a
double o overtime game on opening night in the league.
(33:03):
The only other game on the slate tonight is about
to start the second half in La. Golden State leads
the Lakers fifty five fifty four. Luka Donsich doing very
well quite thank you, twenty two points for him in
the first half and seven rebounds. However, the game has
twenty seven turnovers combined. Tampa Bay wide receiver Mike Evans
(33:25):
was injured broken claviical less I could return in December.
The Jets are expecting to start quarterback to Rod Taylor
instead of Justin Fields could be official tomorrow. Vikings quarterback
Carson Wentz will start again Thursday night at the Chargers.
The angels new manager is Kurt Suzuki, a former catcher
from nearby cal State Fullerton. The Halos have had a
(33:46):
losing record for ten straight years, and among the ten
NHL games tonight, the late games mid second period at Utah,
the Mammoths are tied with the Colorado Avalanche one one earlier,
New Jersey now five and one got a win at
Toronto five to two. Back to you, Thank you.
Speaker 1 (34:02):
Steve O coming up next, says I'm kind of feeling
it with my Hey. In the offseason, I gave you
my long shot pick of the Colts to go to
the Super Bowl, and now, boy, if you got him
at plus ten thousand, you're feeling great. How about some
long shot NBA Finals picks on opening night here? That's
not long shot, I mean the Knicks are the absolutely going,
(34:23):
but long shot NBA Finals picks coming up next, right here,
Jason to Mike Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (34:29):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific, Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (34:38):
The Jason Smith show with my best friend Mike Harmon
What's in the bag for Shark or something? Early in
the third quarter, Warriors over the Lakers sixty seven fifty eight.
Again early in the third, nine and a half left
to go. Second game, opening night, we had a big
thriller earlier won by the Oklahoma City Thunder because Kevin
Durant had a brain cramp at the end of the game.
(34:59):
But what happens. The only been in the league eighteen years.
So it's it's you know, it's it's it's you know,
you gotta learn a little bit. If Torriso is part
of the ball, you gotta learn. Uh. Now we are
sitting here on Opening night, and I guess I'm feeling
I'm kind of on a heater. Following my last off season,
like in the spring when the Colts got Daniel Jones
and I said, Hey, remember I don't say this that
(35:20):
often long shot super Bowl picking the AFC plus ten thousand,
watch out for the Colts. Daniel Jones will fit into
this offense. They have a lot of playmakers. And suddenly, hey,
you get that Colts a plus ten thousand. Man, you
might be thinking, hey, they're gonna buy me out of this. Uh,
I'm gonna make a lot of money here. Already they're
a number one seed in the AFC. So how about this,
how about some long shot picks to go to the
(35:43):
NBA Finals. I mean, obviously the Knicks are going, but
long shot picks outside of the top ten teams that
we got one team of ten thousand and one. Do
you have one team of ten thousand and one?
Speaker 4 (35:53):
By the way, the culture now just five to one? Yeah,
plus ten chips plus two fifty bills in three twenty.
Speaker 1 (35:59):
Five bolt plus five hundred? What are the Jets plus
a million plus twenty thousand? That's it?
Speaker 4 (36:06):
Really okay, I gotta think that you just hit a
point where there's no interest and now might as well
take them off the board.
Speaker 1 (36:16):
In the East, it is a little bit more wide open. Yes,
the Nicks and the Cavaliers are the favorites, but the
youth of the Pistons, they're not gonna stick up on
anybody this year, right obviously, but this is a team.
They like to play a lot of guys. They're young.
They kind of remind me maybe they're a new sort
of Thunder or Minnesota Timberwolves kind of team, where hey,
(36:39):
we can play really hectic across the board. We have
really good defensive players. Thompson is a really good player.
Jade and Ivy if he's healthy. Is a big thing, right,
it was a big thing the end of last year.
It's got a big thing this year. But looking for
a team, hey, yeah, they're gonna be you expect a
little bit more out of them. But they are pretty
talented across the board. Cad Cunningham has become a star.
He's only twenty four to twenty five years old. Yeah,
(37:01):
a long shot. Detroit Pistons NBA Finals.
Speaker 4 (37:04):
They are forty to one to win it all. Like
you know, that translates back into a nice robust well.
Only eleven to one for the Eastern Conference, in other words,
the well, but talking.
Speaker 1 (37:18):
About how strong much easier to get out of the
East than to beat one team in the West at
the end of the year.
Speaker 4 (37:23):
No, that's it because I was looking at it as well.
I mean the Eastern Conference, where do you find a
little bit of run? And I look at Atlanta, who
are right there ten to one, eleven to one, nine
to one, depending on where you're betting, you find a
little bit of variance. But Trey young Porzingis who I'm
still a sucker for Rishache. Yeah, because I can do it,
(37:44):
like the Reco commercials and all of that stuff. Daniels
on the defensive end, Alexander Walker who comes over and
may may find that next step in his career as
he changes squad. So I like the depth that they've got.
And again the Eastern conferences where we're trying to find
their path of least Resis's.
Speaker 1 (38:04):
Much easier to you can make this, make this argument
happen in the East.
Speaker 4 (38:07):
But yeah, you want to you want to get bold, Yeah,
you you want to get tucky. There's a couple of
teams in the West like, well, if this breaks right
and this guy stays out, no no, no, no, we're
going where there may be a little more chaos now
in the West.
Speaker 1 (38:20):
Okay, I got a couple of team including my plus
ten thousand watch out because one of these years Wemby
gets it all together when it's time and this Spurs team. Look,
you're talking about having the number two overall picking the
draft and Dylan Harper. They make the trade last year
for dearon Fox Steph Castle. I've talked about him ad nauseum.
But if this is it Wenby who has grown two
(38:41):
inches apparently in the offseason, but muscle. I am not
going to be surprised if all of a sudden, the
Spurs are just rolling through people because they're just that talented,
they're young, and Wemby becomes the best player in the NBA.
It's gonna happen at some point. I thought maybe towards
the end of last year. But he got hurt. He
had the blood clot problem. That that hopefully he's got
(39:02):
a clean bill of health. Now that's great. Excited to
see him back, But I would not be surprised with Wemby.
This takes this step to be the best player in
the NBA. It's the Spurs again, a little bit more
of a long shot, but they certainly have all the
talent to put it together. They are my long shot
NBA team in the West to go to the finals.
Speaker 4 (39:20):
Thirty to one for the conference. I think we get
to watch a little wemesday Wemby on Thursday night, I
was planning something a little special because the trading card
license has gone back to Tops. Yeah, Tops Big is Thursday.
Seth Myer is actually doing something with a bunch of
Knicks round table and opening packs. But maybe maybe I'll
(39:40):
find a box for us to open along gear because
they play the Mavericks. And that's why I'm looking at
thirty three to one to win it. But it's all
a matter of health, right, It's that's that's really it.
You just look at it from Anthony Davis who came
in a little thick unless he's just you know, pad
it up, like you know just what it is.
Speaker 1 (39:58):
It's it's it's it's he's he's gearing up for the
long season. That's what that season they just had to
fat bear contest.
Speaker 4 (40:05):
See that they declare the winner of that before hibernation
was fattened up, before you go into uh into slumber.
Speaker 1 (40:12):
Now you want to have some fun. Okay, this is
this is a fun off the wall. Yep. John Morant
has to have a big year. Like his NBA future
is sitting around, Like is John Morant going to turn around?
Is he going to be the guy we thought he
was three years ago? After suspensions and questions about motivation,
they made a couple of trades. It lookd they traded
(40:33):
away Desmond Bane. They're basically like, hey, we don't know
what we're gonna be No, he's wearing a mask down
in Orlando, but well, Baine is always gonna wear a mask.
Speaker 4 (40:40):
But I'm just saying he got all the teammates on.
No one knew who know that they watched that mask.
No one knew who he was before he put on
the masks. You want to have some fun. Could I
see Jahn Morant carry the Memphis Grizzlies like we're potentially
are going to see Luca carry the Lakers through the
Western Conference here? You want to have some fun. A
team plus ten thousand Memphis Grizzlies.
Speaker 1 (40:59):
Look at you, all right?
Speaker 4 (41:00):
As we go through the MVP odds to have some
fun with that shake Gilgess, Alexander just a plus one
sixty Jokicchet plus three hundred Luca at four to one.
Speaker 1 (41:13):
Ooh, we'll have more on Luca and the Lakers, who
have now trailing the Warriors by thirteen early in the
third quarter. There are long shot NBA Finals picks coming up. Next,
we get back into the big NBA NFL head coach
quarterback feud we didn't know we had, but we really want.
It's next Fox
