You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (00:30):
Greetings and welcome in another hour, second half of the

of all things sport and entertainment. We'll do some ranking
of well classic films in a bit, we'll tell you
what that's all about. But in the interim, so much
on the sporting universe. I mean, how's the summer going?
(01:05):
Kids getting ready for school? Like, what do we got?
Speaker 5 (01:08):
Yeah, life's good, We're We've done a lot of travel
getting out and about starting to close in on the
school year about two weeks out.
Speaker 6 (01:16):
The oldest is not happy.
Speaker 5 (01:18):
The youngest is happy, you know, because they have very
differing opinions about what the school year is supposed to
be about and what the summer is supposed to be about.
But but we all agree the summer is better because
you get a lot more time with the fam.
Speaker 6 (01:34):
Which is cool.
Speaker 5 (01:35):
But if I'm being perfectly honest, me and the misses,
we could we could use.
Speaker 6 (01:41):
Day eight hour school day. That would that would be
to our fit.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
So we have time some other extracurriculars, all of those
kind of stuff.
Speaker 4 (01:49):
Yeah, no, I get it.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
Absolutely got at the point where mine are almost out
the door and now days where I'm not hanging out
with them and I don't know what to do with myself.
Speaker 6 (01:59):
Yeah, too much. Timmer your hands out.
Speaker 3 (02:01):
All most the demons in your head take over, and
then you sit and go through some trading cards and.
Speaker 4 (02:06):
Life is better. Hey, look at that this quick.
Speaker 3 (02:08):
Anyway, as we sit here in the Fox Sports Radio studios,

(02:31):
at Swollen Dome, give us a shout and let us
know what you're up to to tea, finish the teas
just so you have some time to respond. Give us
your top Sandler movies in honor of our happy Gilmour
part two coming out. A little review of that later on,
because well, I watch a lot of movies. That's what
I do, which is why you had the galactus reference earlier,
(02:54):
went and saw that the kids and I on Friday.
Some more fantastics for no spoiler alerts a little bit
later on, but maybe a galactus like problem. He is
the eater of worlds or devour of worlds, depending on
comic book versus movie versus general pop culture references. But
Rob Manifer may have himself abudding galactus sized problem with
(03:17):
what's going on in Cleveland. Per Jeff Passon of ESPN
MLB's Placed Closer Emmanuel class on leave quote non disciplinary
paid leave right now at least through August thirty. First,
that's coming from the Akron Beacon Journal, Ryan Lewis. So
earlier in the month, you had Luis Ortiz placed on
(03:40):
the non disciplinary paid leave for questions of some first pitches,
some irregular gambling patterns that started to emerge with the
immediately had people going back and looking at first pitches
of a bats of what were waste pitches versus truly
non competitive pitches, and trying to put everything in their
(04:01):
respective buckets. So now you know, all of those reports
going on while a scroll goes on for in game
parlays and such, have people wringing their hands once again,
Rich when we get into these kind of situations Major
League Baseball, NFL and others. So now you're looking at
a situation where Class A, you know, one of those
(04:24):
guys that in the past has been nails out of
the pen, and Steve gave you the update of well
him not being available immediately the Rockies take advantage after
we so savagely went after the Rockies and their lack
of payroll spending earlier in the show, Ye listened to
the whole thing.
Speaker 4 (04:41):
It all comes together. But now we've got the situation.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
You've got all these safeguards in place, and certainly signage
and everything around, and it's beaten into your head from
day one as a player that I know. But bit
by bit it sounds like there may actually be more
coming out of Cleveland by the end of the week
from some of these ports Rich So, how big a
problem do we have bubbling under the surface? Rob Manford,
(05:07):
for Roger Goodell and for all those commissioners.
Speaker 5 (05:12):
I think in terms of the new normal, these these
issues are going to become more commonplace.
Speaker 6 (05:20):
We live in a society.
Speaker 5 (05:23):
Actually, you know what, I don't even want to make
this a commentary on society, just on humanity in general.
It doesn't matter what society you live in. If there
are rules, people are going to break them.
Speaker 6 (05:34):
You know what I mean.
Speaker 5 (05:35):
You make a rule, people are going to break them.
And the more attention that you're paying to making sure
rules are being taken seriously, the more infractions you're gonna find.
You may have a stretch of road in your city
that has no speeding tickets on it, and then maybe
(05:56):
in another city there's a road that also has no
speeding ticket given out on it.
Speaker 6 (06:01):
What do those two roads have in common no cops.
Speaker 5 (06:05):
You know, if you park a cop somewhere in a
nice little hiding spot on the opposite side of an overpass,
you know, hidden from oncoming traffic, or you know, behind
a tree line, so as you're rounding a soft curve
in the road, you know it's too late to hit
the brakes, you know, on the you know, ease off
the accelerator. You know you're going to catch a lot
(06:27):
more speeders when you actually have people posted in spots
or officers posted in spots to catch them. And so
I think that's what we're starting to see is there's
more attention. There's there's a lot more there's a lot
more interest in stopping some of these infractions from taking place,
and so you're going to catch a lot more people.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
Yeah, I think some of it goes into the underground,
as it were, right, the shadow markets and where money
isn't so easily tracked between these apps and all of
the bodies that are now invested because of the millions
of dollars of advertising changing hands to your point transparency, right,
the shadow markets are always going to be there. But
(07:11):
when we're talking about things that are you know, first
pitch balls and things of that nature.
Speaker 4 (07:17):
Like those are gonna be very irregularly.
Speaker 3 (07:19):
Bet So if suddenly someone's putting down five large on that,
guess what people are gonna take notice. Right, it's the
the little instances, and maybe there's a little irregularity, but
you can cancel it out as noise. Some of these
things are just too damn obvious to not be flagged.
And I think that's where we're at with certainly these
(07:40):
Major League Baseball issues. It's interesting you've got an investigation
that's taking a while now. You know, there's the Shoho
Tani and Epay situation from last year that was open
and shut fairly quickly, which is always really curious because
in most of these leagues nothing happen it's that fast.
Speaker 4 (08:01):
So always you.
Speaker 3 (08:03):
Know, preponderance of evidence, believe, plausible deniability, all of those
kinds of things that you get into. But that one
wrapped up pretty quick. This one, it seems, at least
for the Cleveland side of it. We may get continued
investigation from the league offices and and all of those,
but you know, it's just the curiosity in this space
(08:26):
and where folks really get get up in arms, where
it's we have this report while you while you scroll
and add you know, click now for five dollars off,
you know, or or no risk proposition and those kind
of things, and you know, full disclosure. You know, we
have the bet MGM show, the Countdown that we do,
right and you know, it's something you guys traverse when
(08:48):
these instances come up that we do have that information
that is out there that you do have these regulations
and stop gaps and safeguards in to to keep people's
money safe, to keep those that are investing in the
marketplace from being swindled.
Speaker 4 (09:07):
So I think that that's a good part of it.
Speaker 3 (09:09):
As you go, however you feel about gambling at large,
that you do, and the leagues do have these abilities
to stop down and say, hey, let's let's go through
the videotape the little var to steal from our soccer
friends to find out what's real and what's imagined.
Speaker 5 (09:27):
Yeah, yeah, look at it does come up on our
show a lot over the weekends, you know, Countdown with
myself and Brian. Know, we have a betting analyst named
Jared Smith who does great work for Fox Sports Radio
and he is immersed in the world of sports betting.
It's something he's insanely passionate about. He's a number cruncher
(09:47):
and a self proclaimed nerd.
Speaker 6 (09:49):
He loves it.
Speaker 5 (09:50):
He's he's addicted to the grind, so to speak. But
he also understands that what he's dealing with in virtue
is a vice, you know, and it's one that if
you're not careful, can take hold of you. He approaches
it professionally, but he is aware of and has seen
many people who don't, and those who don't are on
(10:14):
the I should say, used to be on the fringes
of society. But now that's not the case anymore because
of the availability with sports betting apps and the availability
that the the that people have to athletes. You know,
propositions can come via social media, somebody sliding into somebody's
(10:37):
direct messages. It no longer has to be some shadowy
ALI dealing it. Can you're still yeah, I really have
its way to it, certainly does. I mean, the oldest
profession is still alive. But the but I am talking about, and.
Speaker 6 (11:00):
It used to be, it used to be a situation.
Speaker 5 (11:03):
Where, you know, point shaving, for example, it was something
that was almost discussed in hush tones because it was
like I mean, we would never you could, You could
never fathom that anybody would do that. Well, nowadays, I
mean there are certain players who I'm sure are convinced
by intelligent criminals that you know they can they can
(11:25):
still win. It could be a win win situation. Like
you could have a lead in a game. All we
need you to do is tank a couple of your
own props and then we'll all make out like fat rats.
Speaker 2 (11:37):
Well rich, right.
Speaker 3 (11:38):
I mean that happened when I was at Northwestern. I
knew the guys that were all the principles. It broke
my heart because those are the guys I would sit
and watch NFL games with on Sundays. Those are the
guys that were playing college football and college basketball.
Speaker 4 (11:51):
And they were part of that.
Speaker 3 (11:52):
Yeah, and I signed for a lot of tickets to
road games. They could have come knocking out my door.
I had no knowledge, but no, but I was signing
away for tickets like all of that. But like, here's
a fumble at the goal line for the one game
we didn't go to at Iowa. It's like, wow, that
didn't look right. Drop the ball just to have the
goal line boom. That becomes the lunchpin to a point
(12:14):
shaving investigation on the football basketball. Well, you were going
to lose anyway, just don't lose that bad, right, and
to your point, and that.
Speaker 6 (12:24):
Is the point.
Speaker 5 (12:25):
And it used to be a lot harder to corral
people in any meaningful way without the I should say,
prior to that event of social media.
Speaker 6 (12:35):
But everybody has access to each other now and.
Speaker 5 (12:37):
Then again, everybody who lives in a state where it's
legal has access to a sports betting app, so this
becomes something that's a little bit more commonplace to discuss.
Speaker 6 (12:48):
You know, who are you betting on?
Speaker 5 (12:50):
Oh?
Speaker 6 (12:50):
Did you see his props?
Speaker 7 (12:51):
Oh?
Speaker 6 (12:51):
This is this? That's that. I mean.
Speaker 5 (12:54):
We were just having a conversation with Jason lockinfora and
I was asking him about the Raiders, and naturally, during
the course of our conversation, he's snuck in the fact
that he has he has the the Raiders under seven
and a half wins or excuse.
Speaker 4 (13:10):
Me, but either way, they got larger conversations. That's right.
Speaker 5 (13:16):
I mean, not ten years ago, twelve years ago, if
a journalist admitted that a team that he would cover
that he would he has actually alive that placed on
the on the team's win total, they they might be
fired immediately.
Speaker 3 (13:32):
Like I just remember that Tony Romo Fantasy convention that
had to be canceled.
Speaker 5 (13:37):
That's per had example, right, a perfect example, you know,
And it's something that the league was was at the
time capitalizing greatly through advertising deals that players couldn't touch
because it was considered church and state. These two shall
never met mix and until they do now and and like,
like we were just talking about going back to the
(13:57):
original metaphor, if you have have speed cameras on the freeways,
you're gonna catch a lot more speeders than if you
have just cops posted up, because occasionally cops, you know,
they use a judgment call. It looks like a mom
who's in the rush soccer practice. She was going, oh,
you know, trying to get shuttleer kids around. She was
(14:17):
only going five miles over the speed limit. I'm gonna
let that one go. But the Ferrari that flew by
going twenty five miles over the speed limit, that's worthy
of a chase.
Speaker 6 (14:28):
But the cameras will be more accurate.
Speaker 5 (14:30):
So the more scrupulous the eyeballs on the situation or
the more infractions you'll find. So I think all of
these commissioners, whether it's Adam Silver, it's Bob Manfred in
the NBA or MLB respectively, or if it's Roger Goodell
in the NFL, whichever one's we're talking about, you're going
(14:54):
to have a lot more of these infractions because a
lot more transparency and attention is being paid to all
of this.
Speaker 3 (15:00):
Just always remember, as we talked about in his tribute
to Hulkogan last week, from the Million Dollar Man, Everybody's
Got a Price. He's Rich Hornberger in for Jason Smith.
I'm by Carbon Fox Sports Radio. Coming up next. Are
we looking at a banana boat?
Speaker 6 (15:15):
Part two?
Speaker 4 (15:16):
What's that about?

Me Mike Harmon. No Jason off for another couple of days.
Back at it on Wednesday in instead, our buddy rich
Ornberger joins me today and tomorrow at Ornberger where you
find him on Twitter. Check out everything he's got popping
there across socials all over.
Speaker 4 (16:24):
What's the Instagram? Is he there? Sorry?
Speaker 6 (16:27):
I had my Mike muted.
Speaker 4 (16:28):
I just thought you quit on me.
Speaker 6 (16:31):
Yeah, that's it, that's it.
Speaker 4 (16:32):
I'm with you. You got two hours.
Speaker 6 (16:36):
Rich Orberger on Instagram.
Speaker 4 (16:37):
See nice and nice and simple there? All right?
Speaker 3 (16:40):
I wanted to ask you one question as we get
ready for the Hall of Fame game. It's really important
to me Antonio Gates is going in. Were you shocked
when Philip Rivers announced his retirement.
Speaker 4 (16:50):
The other day?
Speaker 3 (16:51):
I mean, because it really sent shock waves through the
Fox Sports Radio studios.
Speaker 6 (16:58):
I had no idea.
Speaker 3 (17:01):
Shot that it had already happened. Is really want to
get down to Wait what when?
Speaker 6 (17:07):
When it was I kind of thought, I hate that.
This is where my brain went.
Speaker 5 (17:12):
I was like, I kind of thought I had missed it,
and I was watching an old clip, you know what
I'm saying, Like, you know, sometimes something gets revived on
social media all of a sudden You're like, oh my god,
I can't believe I missed this. This was really well done.
And so at first I was watching the clip like, man,
this must have been a couple of years back.
Speaker 6 (17:33):
And then I realized, like.
Speaker 5 (17:34):
No, no, no, no, no, no, this is one hundred
percent new. I think the biggest sign for me that
somebody's retired from the NFL when they're a.
Speaker 6 (17:43):
High school football coach. Helps.
Speaker 4 (17:46):
Yeah, she really is a pretty good clue. So but
it's fun.
Speaker 5 (17:51):
Yeah, he hung it up for good and good for him,
by the way, easily my favorite teammate. He was a
superstar but acted like just you know, a regular old guy,
and I love that about him.
Speaker 3 (18:04):
So congrats to film one of those fun things, no
question about it. We'll be debating his Hall of Fame
candidacy over the next couple of years. A lot of numbers, obviously,
the one thing that's not sitting there is the big
shiny ring as we celebrate all of those big things
later on at Canton this week, But we look at
the world of the NBA. We talked earlier in the
(18:26):
show Luka Danchetz, leaner and meaner pairing up with Lebron
James maybe a little bit of inspiration there, maybe a
little bit of the introspection of Hey, I really need
to change the narrative around me. Well, Lebron's not gonna
go quietly into that good night. You knew it was
only a matter of time before we'd get something out
of the James camp in terms of social media statements
(18:48):
or appearances.
Speaker 4 (18:49):
Well we got it.
Speaker 3 (18:50):
And once upon a time it was a banana boat
famously with all his buddies hanging out in the offseason. Well,
this time he's on a different type a boat. And
you had Nikola Jokic's agent, Mishko Rasnatovich, put up a
couple of photos from a boat. The first one I
saw the guy in the middle. He looked like either
(19:11):
Dean Norris or Steve Balmer. So I had to do
a double take and blow up the picture to make
sure it wasn't one of them, because really, if he's
sitting there with Dean Norris, are they planning a sequel
to Breaking Bad? I don't know, but says the summer
of twenty twenty five is the perfect time to make
plans for the fall of twenty twenty six at King
James at MAV Carter. That was on his Instagram post
(19:34):
a couple pictures of the boat. Everybody's laughing, having a
good time off the coast of southern France. For you,
as I know, you're apt to vacation down there, rich
and circle the globe as you do. But it's fun
because you get back into the theater after opting in
at the fifty two plus million dollars this weekend. More
(19:57):
from earlier in the we'd had Mark Stein on as
part of he joins us each it every week and
talking about possible destinations and intrigue and Lebron with Dallas.
Speaker 4 (20:10):
Has been floated about for a while.
Speaker 3 (20:11):
He had an article on Fridays and he's certainly intrigued
this coming from Mark Stein at the Steinline on his
sub stack that Lebron maybe with Kyrie and Cooper Flagg
and his old buddy Anthony Davis. There that maybe there's
a reunion, and now we get this fun where because
there's been speculation, and Josh Cronky helped fuel it a
(20:33):
little bit with some comments out of the blue in
talking about making that trade that sent Michael Porter Junior
away going, hey, you know, with the way finances work
and the second Apron, you know you might get yourself
with one injury. Suddenly you have to think about trade
in fifteen. Well, he's coming towards the end of his deal.
(20:54):
He and Luca are boys. So and Luca, by the way,
showed up hanging out with Aaron Judge before the Yankees
game today, which is kind of fun. A couple of
ripped guys getting after it on the field. Judge currently
on the il. But you know, you start the wheels
of speculation of what the next churning of this machine is,
(21:16):
whether it's Lebron to Denver or Jokic eventually to the Lakers.
It's fun theater and that's what Lebron seems to excel
at in this point.
Speaker 5 (21:27):
Yeah, I think that I think that speculation fuels interest, right,
and so if Lebron James can get people talking about
his retirement, well people are interested and That's exactly what
he did after the Lakers got knocked out of the
(21:47):
postseason two years ago. So what happened after this year's postseason. Well,
you have this kind of dance around contract negotiations and
the rumor mill is starting to turn on whether or
not he'll be a Laker to finish his career. To me,
it's just gitting up a bunch of interest because Lebron James,
(22:12):
for as much of a showman as he is on
the court, he is hyper aware of what kind of
showman he needs to be and needs to continue to
be in this attention economy off the court, because he
makes potentially equal or if not more money off the
court just based off what he earns from.
Speaker 6 (22:32):
His social media. I mean, just he is.
Speaker 5 (22:35):
He could print money with the following that he has
on both Instagram and an x or Twitter alone.
Speaker 6 (22:42):
He's that famous.
Speaker 5 (22:44):
So look, I mean, it used to be almost like
fame was almost like an unappreciated afterthought of doing something
great in.
Speaker 6 (22:53):
Front of the public eye.
Speaker 5 (22:54):
You know, fame for some I'm sure they really enjoyed it,
but for most it was an obligate or a cross
they had to bear for greatness. Well, now it's actually
a commodity you can trade on. And Lebron James enjoys
his fame because it makes him a lot of money.
And so I'm not reading too deeply into it, Mike,
(23:15):
If I'm being honest with you, I think he's trying
to feel interest in his name.
Speaker 3 (23:19):
Well, that's it, right, A little bit of his farming,
a little bit is to see what kind of hot
take pundit tree'll come off it and feed the rumor mill. Right,
he wants his name swirled about, and whether it's speculation
about retirement, because then you immediately start seeing and it's almost,
you know, like I spoken into existence, the old wall
(23:39):
has ears. I'd hit the update and refresh on my
Twitter feed and all of a sudden there's a bunch
of videos of hey, look, Lebron could play another seven
years if he wanted to him, you know, flying in
for a dunk, working out in an empty gym, and
all of that kind of stuff. So it's it's just
that kind of chaos that we get to each and
every year. And at this point it's that you know, hey,
(24:01):
appreciate me, I'm not here much longer. Kind of conversation
that flows out of it as well, that every opportunity
that he's on the court for whatever time that his
team has a chance to win, and then you start
photo shopping him into all these different uniforms to see
if he can catch lightning in the bottle one last time?
Speaker 4 (24:20):
Or is it truly?
Speaker 3 (24:21):
You know, fata complete that, you know, it's just all right,
what are the final stats?
Speaker 2 (24:26):
And move on?
Speaker 3 (24:27):
But it is the curiosity because we get that it's
in great juxtaposition and the fact that it includes Nikole
Jokich is fun. Earlier in the show referenced you know,
the Scottie Scheffler comments of you know, really good at this,
but how much do you love it? And that's a
question that gets asked of athletes all the time. Rich
I think you and I have talked about it at times.
(24:48):
You know, you've got guys that I've certainly interviewed who goes.
You know what, I realized I was good at it.
My body grew into it, and it became an opportunity
to get an education and later make a career.
Speaker 4 (24:58):
So I ran with it as long as I could.
Did I love what I did?
Speaker 6 (25:02):
Well?
Speaker 3 (25:02):
I had to to be great, But you know, to
a point right, and that's where we're at with the
Scotti Sheffeer thing. Always wondered that with Nikola Jokic because
you saw the video that was posted on the rounds
and it's always that curiosity again going back to the
Josh Cronky comments, this is a guy that I've always
thought if he just decided he was done with either
(25:23):
an organization, teammates, or just the situation. Remember when he
didn't really want to stay for the parade after they
won the title, wanted to go home, just wanted to
be back with his friends, his family and his horses.
This weekend, one of his horses wins a big race
and he's crying like a baby, and it was great,
Like I love that emotion. It's on the sleeve, and
(25:44):
like why doesn't he care about the that? Like, no,
he just he knows he's good at this and it's
not a surprise when he plays well. It's more a
surprise when he doesn't. So when you had the expectation
that you can only control so much and you invest
a lot of money, time and effort to build those stables,
that you win a huge race like that, that yeah,
(26:04):
it's going to cut bubble to the surface because of that,
you know, investment that you have in it. But I've
always long wondered, you know what, what would be the
you know, the proverbial straw to break the Campbell's back,
for him to just say, the hell with it, I'm
going back to the salkey full time.
Speaker 6 (26:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (26:20):
Well, I mean, look, there there are people who are
far more passionate about their interests and hobbies than they
are about their profession. That's a tale as old as time.
I remember one time I watched a chainsaw sculptor as
he was finishing a project. I was mesmerized. I probably
stood in front of this you know stump that he
(26:41):
had rolled out into a town square during a you know,
not a flea market what do they call it, but
basically like you know.
Speaker 6 (26:48):
A street party. Uh, you know it was it was
it was a.
Speaker 5 (26:52):
Top block party. I'm watching this sculpture happen, and I'm like,
this is art. This guy is a master craft. And
when he finally finished, and he removed the goggles and
he wiped the sweat from his brow, and you know,
the the snowfall of sawdust had kind of ceased, I
said to him, I'm like, so so what kind of
(27:14):
I'm like, if you don't mind me asking, like, what
kind of living do you make with your art? I
was like, is this something that you know? I mean,
I mean, is this something that you can you have
to do every day? I'm like, how do you support
your lifestyle? I was so curious because it was marvelous.
I think he created like a you know, some whatever
it was. And he goes, oh, no, I'm a lawyer.
(27:36):
I'm like, oh, and he goes, yeah, actually, I'm a
really good lawyer. He was like, so I get to
do this. This is what I'm passionate about. And I
thought I was talking to an artist, and I was,
but in our in our culture, because we're so you know,
career obsessed.
Speaker 6 (27:53):
I thought of him as a lawyer from that point forward.
But the truth is.
Speaker 5 (27:57):
He considers himself a chainsaw sculptor. That's what he wants
to do all the time. I mean, if we're being honest, Jokic,
he considers himself a horse owner and a horse trader
and a horse trainer, Like that's what he's passionate about.
In the case of Lebron James, he is career obsessed.
Lebron James his career obsessed, and he's obsessed with the
(28:19):
hype around his own career, and that tracks so much
better with an American audience than what Jokic is doing
because we can make sense of that.
Speaker 6 (28:29):
That makes us feel comfortable.
Speaker 5 (28:30):
It doesn't make us feel judged for caring about his career.
You know, Lebron James, you know he's exalted and he
enjoys the fact that he's highly touted, whereas Jokic can't
wait to get on the next thing, smoking to Latvia
or wherever his home country is. I'm blanking on it
at the moment, and to be with his horses again.
(28:51):
I mean, it feels if we feel silly, we feel
more silly rooting for that guy because he's not as
obsessed just about his career as we are. Then it
does rooting for a guy like Lebron James, who appears
to sleep, eat and breathe basketball.
Speaker 4 (29:09):
He's from some more Serbia.
Speaker 6 (29:12):
That's it's Serbia service.
Speaker 4 (29:14):
So there you had it.
Speaker 3 (29:15):
Wait all right, the other thing, Lebron James, like our
guy Steve de Sager, he wants to be a master thespian,
So let's hear him act this one out. Shakespearean like.
It's Steve Disager at the news desk. With everything trending
in our sporting universe.
Speaker 8 (29:30):
