Speaker 3 (00:59):
What's going on? What's your best?

Speaker 4 (01:00):
Yes?

Speaker 5 (01:01):
I Right now we are setting up Vanilla Funny Volume two,
which will be a comedy special that I will have
shot and three camera shooting event at the Ice House.
It looks like it's gonna be in October. I would
love it to have been for my birthday, which is
September twenty second, which falls in on a Friday night,
so it would have been dope. But God's telling me

(01:22):
there be more patient with it later in the fall.
So that's the next big thing I got coming up. Man,
plus planning to shoot. I wrote a short film about
two years ago and I'm trying to put it together
now with some other you know, some other film independent
film people and stuff. I know they're the big strike
and stuff's going on, but we're not that important, so
we can still get out and shoot our stuff.

Speaker 3 (01:40):
So film.

Speaker 5 (01:41):
I feel real powerful about Man that I wrote from
top to bottom by myself.

Speaker 3 (01:45):
It's a short film. It's only about thirty five minutes.

Speaker 5 (01:47):
But it's about visual prejudice and the way we move
through America and we use our eyes before we use
our brain.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
Wow. I threw an idea by you that you like.

Speaker 4 (01:58):
We yes, I know, yeah, I've not done anything about
it yet, but you like that one, so we got
to do something about that one.

Speaker 3 (02:04):
Also.

Speaker 5 (02:05):
Yes, absolutely, Man, anytime somebody comes up with comedy or
something funny to do, it's like, let's just do it.

Speaker 4 (02:10):
Man.

Speaker 5 (02:11):
It's as long as you're doing it and you're happy
about it. You know, just people gonna like it, people
aren't gonna like it.

Speaker 3 (02:15):
Who cares? I didn't. I gotta tell you know again,
I always say this.

Speaker 4 (02:18):
I wish I would have taken more advantage of some
of the TV situations when I was out in Los Angeles.
But many years ago, I get a call and it
was the producers from the Maury Povid show. Oh May Yeah,
and Maury had an emergency and they still had to
film the shows that they couldn't take the three days off,

(02:40):
and they came up with five names that would fill
in for Maury, and I was one of them, and
they wanted to know if I was interested. I'm like, oh, yes,
you are not the father. Oh yeah, you gotta pick me.
I go, oh yeah, I'm totally I'm all in. I
get a call back that afternoon. I'm one of two
people now out to the selection. Are you They want

(03:03):
to know, are you all in? If we pick you,
we gotta fly you out to New York.

Speaker 3 (03:06):
Blah blah blah.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
I'm all in.

Speaker 3 (03:09):
I'm practice that you are not the flyer. That's all
you gotta know to say.

Speaker 4 (03:13):
They called me back. They gave it to the producer
who she did a good job for. She filled it
for May. But that's like one of my regrets that
I didn't get that one. Man. I wanted that one
bad man BJ that would have been my calling.

Speaker 3 (03:26):
I would have loved that one. You know, I'm telling you, man, Yeah,
I feel you.

Speaker 5 (03:30):
When I first moved out here eighteen years ago, I
was all gung ho about film and being an actor
and being a star and all this other stuff. And
I started out getting extra work. I was an extra
Pirates of the Caribbean two. I did extra work in
Spider Man three, which some of the big films. And
I almost got a part in Boston Legal, which was
an old yeah, which was an old TV show William Shatner.

Speaker 3 (03:48):
That was not Yeah. I know that.

Speaker 5 (03:50):
That was my first audition. I got all the way
to the third audition of that. But then, you know,
as his life happens, man and you started doing other things,
and I started doing more stand up, and then sports
talk opened up for me, and I was calling high
school football games for Fox Sports West and calling these
big time Bosco and Modern Day and you know, Bryce Young,
Djung Gallele like calling big time name kids. I tryd

(04:10):
to just fell into that. But yeah, I got I
got pulled into that just on a humbug quick story.
A friend of mine calls me one night. He goes,
it's a Thursday night. He goes, do you want to
call a high school football game tomorrow? And it's like
nine thirty at night and I've never called the game before,
but I watch enough sports and this is what I do,
and this is what I've always wanted to do. I
text them right back win and where that's all? I
text back winning where.

Speaker 3 (04:31):
I love it.

Speaker 5 (04:32):
He tells me, gives me. The school is Oakes Christian
I mentioned earlier in the show. Zach Sharpon is the
running back Keevon Thibodau, who was the number one rank
kid in high school that year. He's the defensive end.
So that was my first experience and I remember driving
to the game.

Speaker 3 (04:47):
He called me. He goes, are you there? Yes?

Speaker 5 (04:49):
And I be there in about ten minutes. He goes, uh,
you want some advice? I said sure, He goes, just
call what you see. He goes, I've done shows with you,
I've done radio with you. You know this stuff. This is
why I'm sorry. It's last minute. They pay me a
like seventy five bucks. He's like, I know it's last minute.
I'll cash app you. I'll cash app you the payment.
But I thought you would be great for this man.
I thought of something. You'd be good and I just
fell in love with it. It's still in money, Bernie.

(05:11):
You're gonna pay me to go up at the booth
and put a headside on and and and just talk
about the game I'm watching.

Speaker 3 (05:17):
You're gonna pay me to do that. Sign me up.

Speaker 4 (05:20):
You know, being in radio is like the old that
it's better to be lucky than good.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
Yeah about it.

Speaker 4 (05:25):
You have to be good and lucky. And you know
the same way with me, I was.

Speaker 3 (05:29):
I was very lucky.

Speaker 4 (05:30):
See this was before there was ESPN Radio and Fox
Radio and all that. There was dreaming, all the stuff.
All before that. There was this one network out in
Las Vegas. And I was listening to the guy in
my house in Los Angeles, and you know, I look up.
I hate to throw, you know, disparaging remarks, but he
was awful, but I was, but I was listening. You know,

(05:51):
my dad and I would listen to the radio. I
spent a lot of time with him back then. And
then it was and it was just wasn't very good.
But we were listening to him and I said, you know,
I'm gonna give the loss a call over there, that's
if he needs anybody. And I call over to the
network and he's like, who are you? Have you ever
done a show? Like, no, I never done a show.
He goes go to Arkansas and then go to Milwaukee

(06:11):
and then go here the market stuff. Yeah, he goes,
call me in five years, come on, cock, he goes.
You know what, He goes, I have your number. If
anything comes up, I'll give you a call. And then
that was pretty much hip. So, you know, the summer
goes around. I don't hear back from anything. You know,
the you know, Thanksgivvy comes around, I don't hear back anything.

(06:32):
And all of a sudden, I just get a call
out of the blue from the same guy and he goes, hey, you're.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
Still looking to do a show.

Speaker 4 (06:38):
I go, oh, yeah, yeah, of course, He goes, I
got Christmas even Christmas for you, New Year's even New Year's. Yeah,
midnight to six, you want to drive out here to Vegas.
We'll put you up in one of those crappy hotels
and and you can do the shows. I didn't even
know what I was doing. I didn't even bring headphones
with me. I didn't know how to punch up callers.

(06:59):
I the guy who told me I could do the show,
never introduced himself, never came to say hello to me. Yeah,
I did the four shows, but that that started out.

Speaker 3 (07:08):
So again, it's better to be go U given good.
You know what I meant to fall into it? Well,
it's being blessed.

Speaker 5 (07:14):
It's also being at the right place at the right time,
and when opportunity comes knocking, open that door, Open the
damn door. And then, like one of my favorite saying
about life is I stay ready, so I don't have
to get ready. Anybody could call this network could call
me at four point thirty and say, can you be
down there by five?

Speaker 3 (07:30):
Yeah, I live fifteen minutes up the street. Yep, I'm on.

Speaker 5 (07:32):
I'm ready. Just give me a rundown. I've been watching
sports all day. It's like, I mean, it's all I do.
So when I look at the rundown, Okay, I'm ready.
I'm ready to rock and roll. Speaking of like starting slow,
I was trying to get at another big network. I'll
say the mouse everybody knows what the mouse was. And
I had a meeting with a guy one day and
we sat down in the conference room and he goes, look,
I can't hire you, and I can't just give you
a show. Look, I'm thinking I'm gonna go in there
and convince this guy to give me your radio show.

(07:54):
He's like, listen, I can't give you a show and off,
but I've listened to your podcast online.

Speaker 3 (07:58):
I listened to a few minutes.

Speaker 5 (07:59):
You're good, but your little edgy, and it's probably gonna
take you a little longer because I didn't have the
shiny degree from the mass communications department at the big time.

Speaker 3 (08:06):
You know, yeah, yeah, sarahcuse day.

Speaker 5 (08:09):
You know Vanderbilt, Northwestern, Michigan State, those squad didn't. I
didn't have that. He goes, but I want you to
go down and talk to this guy. And it was
a local network in Connecticut called Nutmeg TV, which is
their focus exact and most people haven't and I'm glad
because that's where I started. I took their producers class.
I paid thirty five dollars to take the producers class
and then let me create vj's unsportsmanlike Conduct was a

(08:31):
local access TV show that came on Thursday nights at
nine o'clock for an hour. Within four weeks, I was
their number one rated show on their network, which I
fun yeah, fun yeah, in the town of three hundred
and fifty thousand people. But I'm proud of that because
that's where I started.

Speaker 4 (08:45):
Well there you go, so little advice to the young
people out there. We're going for tunity knocks. Yep, you
open that door and sometimes it doesn't knock for a while.
Maybe it doesn't knock when you're twenty or twenty five
or thirty or thirty five.

Speaker 3 (08:57):
But keep out it right and just say yes. Just
say yes. Don't just say yes, don't think, just say yes.
Just figure it from there exactly. Just go do it
all right.

Speaker 4 (09:05):
We were looking at some quarterbacks that we're talking about
what kind of years are going to have? Yeah, you know,
here's a team that some people thought were gonna be
at the bottom of the division. Some people still think
they're gonna be at the bottom of the division, and
they're gonna be probably one of the worst teams in
the NFL. Yet again, they have a quarterback who is
so dynamic, and I'm talking about Justin Fields who last
preseason game, went through five yards downfield for one hundred

(09:28):
and fifty yards total. This guy is I mean, he
is a great runner. Also, I love this guy. The
more he plays the more I just like him being dynamic.
But I'm not so sure the Bears are really cut out.
They're better defensively that for damn sure. What do you
think Justin Fields is gonna do this year? What are

(09:49):
you looking at him?

Speaker 5 (09:50):
I actually have some Justin Filds stuff in my one seventeen.
I think Justin Field is gonna be another thousand yard rusher.
He'll become the second quarterback to do it in back
to back years Lamar Jacks and did it in nineteen
and twenty. And he's averaging six ' eight per carry
in seven point one last year. They had the number
one rushing team in the league last year, and I
think people are missing the boat on that. Also, so

(10:12):
they can run the football, it's in their scheme. I
know they switch some running backs around in and out
of there. But when you get a receiver like Dj
Moore right, you had a.

Speaker 4 (10:22):
Touchout exactly the first catch the guy preseason, but still
doesn't matter.

Speaker 5 (10:27):
Man, A guy that can go get sometimes like am
I saying, is sometimes, man, when a quarterback breaks the
huddle and he's overlooking the defense and he's licking his
fingers and he's looking around, he's got to be able
to look left for right and see what I call
a dude, A dude out there that could just go
get you a third and fourteen a second in nineteen.

(10:49):
You know what I'm saying, could just go I'm gonna
put the ball in about a five yard circumference, okay,
in a square five yard box. I need you to
either go low, go left, go right, or leap up
and just he need you to get this one for
me right now, big dog. This is what you get
paid the big This is why you got the new contract.
You need that kind of guy. Every quarterback needs that
kind of guy, unless you're Tom Brady. Right, he's the
only got to have to do it without it. Even

(11:10):
though when he had Randy Moss, all he did was
went out through fifty touchdown passes. Twenty five of them
went the Randy Moss right, So you get Randy Moss.
That's what happens when you're that great. But Justin Phils.

Speaker 3 (11:20):
Has a guy.

Speaker 4 (11:20):
He's got a dude, but he's give very a good
team though, right because you got Minnesota. Detroit's supposed to
be the sexy pick right now. And are we sleeping
on Green Bay as a pretty even division right now?

Speaker 5 (11:33):
If yeah, I think Minnesota wins the division, I'm not
buying Detroit like most people are. And that's simply because
I call it the Kansas City Royal syndrome.

Speaker 3 (11:42):
Please forgive me all the fans in Kansas City, and
they do.

Speaker 5 (11:44):
They did get the one World Series, but for most
of my life are the Cleveland Brown Syndrome. For most
of my sports life, I've never seen them win nothing.
So why would I pick them to do it? They
have to do it for me first before I'll say, Okay,
I think Detroit's a nice nine win team. Possibly, I
think Vegas has gotta make eight and a half for

(12:06):
nine and a half. I believe eight and a half,
so they think nine wins. That tells me Minnesota's gonna
win that division. Chicago and Green Bay is gonna come
down to two things. Justin fields Jordan Love simple as
simple as that, which quarterback plays better will be the
better football team. I'll put my money on just on
Justin fields playing much better, also really quick.

Speaker 3 (12:25):
On Justin Fields.

Speaker 5 (12:25):
People forget coming out of high school guys Justin Filds.
We love Trevor Lawrence. They were one A and one
by what they do in high school grading. Now I'm
not sure if you notice Brady, but they get number
one rated dual threat and then number one rated pocket passer,
So it gives you two number one rated high school quarterbacks.
That was him and Trevor Lawrence. All Trevor Lawrence did
was beat him to the punch and signed with Clipson.

(12:47):
Climpton wanted them two goes to Georgia. Didn't work out.
Georgia transfers to Ohio State and it takes them to
the playoff. He's been good for a very long time.
Justin Field has and I think that continues. I like
them at about eight or nine. I liked him at
about seven to nine. Wins can I think running the
football and defense means still something today in the NFL.

Speaker 4 (13:06):
You know, when I was filling the last Saturday with
Jason Martin, we were doing Boom or Bust, and every
day we came up with We're like, I don't.

Speaker 3 (13:12):
Know if I want to put him as a boom.
I don't know if I want to put.

Speaker 4 (13:14):
Him as a bust right down in the middle, one
of those guys the name you just mentioned, Jordan Love.
You know, I don't think he's gonna go ahead and
jump up as like one of the top ten quarterbacks.

Speaker 3 (13:23):
Though. I don't think he's going.

Speaker 4 (13:24):
To be a complete failure like some people think he's
gonna be. They might not miss a beat with him
all that much. I mean, what was Aaron Rodgers record
his last year with Green Bay with eight and nine?

Speaker 5 (13:38):
Yeah, well, his first year starting there were six and ten,
so he didn't come out as game busters.

Speaker 4 (13:42):
No, but I'll just go by the eight to nine
record because let's face it, I Jordan loves been on
the team for a while, so we had a chance
to lord so is you know, obviously Rogers. I mean,
they could be an eight win team, nine win team,
maybe even a ten win team. I think he has
a pretty decent good year, But I don't think he's
gonna be just a complete bust out there.

Speaker 5 (14:04):
You know, I don't think it'll be a complete bus Listen,
and this is what I love about football. We we
know there's someone going to in fifteen, right, we know
someone's going three and fourteen.

Speaker 3 (14:14):
It's just gonna depend on who it is, the Raiders
and how it happened. I mean, but you know what
it could be.

Speaker 5 (14:19):
Or honestly, the Raiders if they get their act together,
get their running back in the building.

Speaker 3 (14:24):
Garoppolo serviceable, He's a he can get you seven. Get
he could get you seven. Get back to Jordan Love though,
get back. But with Jordan Love, you know, I like
you said, he's been there. I'm pulling for him because
the guy, I think the kid.

Speaker 5 (14:37):
I think if you're you're backing up Aaron Rodgers that long, damnit,
you better learn something. You gotta have something in you
or what were you doing?

Speaker 3 (14:45):
Right?

Speaker 5 (14:45):
So I do think the Packers could probably finish last
in that division, just because I think Minnesota is still
so good.

Speaker 3 (14:53):
I do like what the Lions are doing, and.

Speaker 5 (14:55):
I'll take Justin Fields over Jordan Love if it comes
down to those two quarterbacks determining who's gonna have the
better season between the Packers and the Bears.

Speaker 3 (15:04):
The VJ.

Speaker 3 (15:21):
A couple of the thoughts on the college football I
want to get to.

Speaker 4 (15:25):
I want to get to some Michigan stuff, as I
know you're a big time Michigan fan of course, and
we'll get to some games in week zero, so we'll
get to all that coming up next right here on
Fox Sports or Radio.

Speaker 2 (15:35):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 4 (15:45):
HI Welcome back VJ Husky, Arnie Spaniard in for the guys,
Jason Smith and his best friend Mike Harmon right here
at the tyrack dot Com studios. By the way, I'm
gonna so, I'm gonna have to bet the Kansas City
Chiefs against the Cardinals.

Speaker 3 (15:58):
Andy Reid said.

Speaker 4 (15:59):
The chief starters are gonna play the entire first half.
Though the Chiefs are seven to that point favorite of
the road against Arizona. That's like the biggest preseason spread
I've ever seen. That's crazy. I don't know if I
can lay seven to that on the road. You know, well,
I don't lay anything on preseason.

Speaker 3 (16:14):
That's one thing. I'm a betting man. No no, no, no,
no, no no. Preseason is the free season.

Speaker 5 (16:19):
No no, no, I'm not betting. I'm not betting on preseason.
I'm saving my money. I got I got some really,
I got some really good uh future props and some
parlays that I'm laying ten bucks on that if they
cash in, and they'll cash me in at about ten
grand eleven grand, I need it bad. I need it bad, man,
trust me what I got going on my personal life.

Speaker 3 (16:39):
But anyway, I don't do.

Speaker 4 (16:40):
Those I love those contests they have, you know over yeah,
every week you go up against like a thousand other
guys and stuff like that.

Speaker 3 (16:46):
Last family, I think I love those type of.

Speaker 6 (16:49):
Things I have.

Speaker 5 (16:49):
Listen, I have some that I and I and there's
some that I are you know, I reach on sometimes,
but and then there's some that I really really like.
Like my division, I have one right now winners Dolphins
plus three hundred Bengals plus one fifty Jags minus won
fifty five Chiefs minus one, sixty five Philly minus one,
thirty five Soda plus seventy five Saints plus one twenty

(17:12):
Seahawks plus one ninety five ten dollars bet.

Speaker 3 (17:16):
Is that a parlay? That's a parlay? Wow? Wow? Ten
dollars bet? Eleven one and ninety two year a ten
dollars bet. First, if all those teams win the division.

Speaker 5 (17:27):
All those gotta win the div What I do is
I take a hundred and I just spread it out.
I just picked different divisions because one of these combinations
I've got a cash in, right.

Speaker 3 (17:35):
I mean, like like Kansas City. Kansas City's winning their division.

Speaker 5 (17:38):
We all agree with that, correct, Philly's winning that division,
Minnesota's winning that division.

Speaker 3 (17:42):
There's some locks and the end of Jaguars. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (17:45):
But every every year it seems like we have a
team that I know worse the first three.

Speaker 3 (17:49):
Did you pick that one or not?

Speaker 5 (17:50):
That's where I That's where I tried to I'm trying
thinking the cashing in on the Dolphins and the Saints.
That's where I think the Dolphins, Saints and the Seahawks
two team one made the playoffs. Two teams who didn't
make the playoffs. Yeah, they were exactly. They weren't well. Well,
the Central tip for last place because everybody was seven
and everybody was seven to ten other than other than
the the the Bucks who were eight and nine, so

(18:12):
everybody tied for last two.

Speaker 3 (18:13):
I worse to first.

Speaker 5 (18:15):
I just don't see this year because the worst teams
were just really really bad last year. Like the Bears
were worse. They're not going to go to first. The
Texans were worse. They're not going to go to first.

Speaker 3 (18:25):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (18:25):
I like that bet.

Speaker 3 (18:26):
I wanted it on some of that bet. I like
that last time.

Speaker 5 (18:30):
I got a bunch of them. Dude, I got some
parlays that I got some player prop parlays. You got
to put five or six of these together to really
cash and like a two hundred dollars bet that I'm
make in August that hits my account in January.

Speaker 3 (18:41):
That's that's that's gas money for the week. I need
vacation money.

Speaker 5 (18:45):
I need Okay, pack the kids, hey baby, get the kids,
were going were going to we going to Vegas.

Speaker 3 (18:50):
Get the kids. Put the kids in the in the camera.
Oh my god, all you can eat steak is shrimp. Baby,
let's go. I'm home School man.

Speaker 4 (19:00):
I love it all right, your Michigan Wolverines hund at
Harbad get away for not getting the four game suspension.
I was talking with Plank about this ibody on our
Sunday show. Huh, And I'm like, well, now I think
it's gonna be less because it goes.

Speaker 3 (19:13):
Really, I think it's gonna be more.

Speaker 4 (19:15):
If anything, what am I mystic about this because I'm
a little surprised now that they got to move it
back to the next year.

Speaker 3 (19:22):
Well, they're What you're missing is they voted that.

Speaker 5 (19:25):
You know, they sat down in whatever committee, looked at
him and was like, Okay, we don't agree. You know
what I'm saying, all sides, all parties have to agree.
However many parties it is. And I'm not gonna say
try to act like I know how many parts it is,
but I know it ain't just one person.

Speaker 3 (19:37):
And it's not Roger Goodell.

Speaker 5 (19:38):
Right, Roger Goodell, it was judge and jury when he
first became the commissioner, right, Adam Silver was trying to
do the same thing in the NBA. NCAA doesn't work
that way, especially when you're talking about these type of
situations where he said no it wasn't really about the cheeseburger.
It was like daddy, he he lied about it, but
then he said that he didn't remember about it. And
I'm a hardball guy, so I don't defend him on that,
like it's like, dude, you lie that. We get it though,
cause it's like, dude, it was just a cheeseburger. Fine,

(19:59):
I'll just tell him I forgot it about it, whatever, whatever.
If they stop on me hard, I'll say, hey, like
you said earlier, Hey, you guys got all this stuff
going on in the Ncuba you're worried about. Come on, man,
a cheeseburger that I bought for for a recruit on
a trip.

Speaker 4 (20:11):
Should they worry about all the realignment going around exactly?

Speaker 5 (20:14):
Well, I think that stuff. Yeah, I think that stuff's great.
But I just think that when it comes down to it,
That's why I think. Now I will say this, I
think he's gone after this year. I do think that
now this past year about everybody. Yes, this past year,
I told everybody, he's not leaving. He's not leaving everybody out.
He's gonna leave VJ the way you guys lost the TCU.

Speaker 4 (20:30):
Da da da da.

Speaker 3 (20:31):
He's gonna leave.

Speaker 5 (20:31):
I said, dude, he's not going. He cannot leave this team.
He brings back way too. And then when Korm, Korm
was the key to me. When Korm said he was
coming back, I said, dude, he's They've all talked, trust me.

Speaker 3 (20:42):
They want to run this back.

Speaker 5 (20:44):
They feel like this is the best opportunity that Michigan
has had since.

Speaker 3 (20:47):
Nineteen ninety eight.

Speaker 5 (20:49):
And Charles Woodson and Will Floyd and and and and
Brian Greasy and knows this is this is that team,
this is that type of team. He cannot leave this
on the table. But after this year they win it all,
I can leave. Michigan got a championship. JA, why is
he gonna want to leave? You know, he wants to
go to I think he wants to go to the NFL.
I think he wanted to go He flirted with the

(21:10):
Minnesota job two years ago. Remember people thought he had
that job. Peters are what particular TV he's got his
eye on.

Speaker 3 (21:17):
Or No, I don't think so. I think he just
wants to be bad. When the Lion's job was open,
that seemed like a natural fit. But yeah, would have
been a natural fit.

Speaker 5 (21:24):
But I think he just wants to get back to
the pro level, because like true competitors in life, man,
that that taste of that ball falling incomplete in the
back of the end zone the Crabtree and the Louisiana
super Dome against the Ravens in the Super Bowl. You
think that that doesn't keep that man up some nights.
The way we know Jim Harball, the way you know
that family.

Speaker 3 (21:45):
Dude. Wait, come on, man against his brother against his brother, Dude,
I'm forty five.

Speaker 5 (21:50):
I don't like losing to my brothers in nothing, even
to his day, even fantasy.

Speaker 3 (21:54):
I want to smack you on beach. I want to
beat you bad.

Speaker 5 (21:57):
So you know that I'm the sports guy and his fan,
like I'm I just think that's the that's the hook
is I want to get back and see if I can,
if I can get back to that level, because remember
he turned San Francisco around in what eighteen months?

Speaker 4 (22:11):
Yeah, and by the way, they weren't playing anybody great
in the first four games anyway, so I could coach
them to a four and oh victory in those games, right.

Speaker 3 (22:18):
I mean, there's nothing.

Speaker 2 (22:19):
True, but.

Speaker 3 (22:21):
You still don't want to have to miss No, no, no,
it's a distraction. It's a story for four weeks.

Speaker 5 (22:27):
These eighteen, nineteen twenty year old kids got to answer
these questions or well, in college you can kind of
you can kind of keep media away if you want
to make up your little rules like freshman art out
of the talk and stuff like that. So I just
think it's a distraction. Now it's gone. This has This
just has And I'm not saying this as a fan.
I'm saying this as a football fan, not a Michigan fan.
This just has a feel to it for Michigan this year.

(22:48):
It just has a feel. If JJ McCarthy can be
the five star IMG recruit that people thought he was,
this is his year. Like everything else is set. They
have the best offensive line in football, won the Remington Award,
which goes to the best offensive line the two past
years college NFL scouts. They're throwing numbers out Arnie of

(23:09):
eighteen to twenty NFL guys on this team.

Speaker 3 (23:13):
Calvert was just talking about it last week.

Speaker 5 (23:15):
I forget the guess he had on but he said, listen,
I was at practice. They had twenty NFL guys. Twenty
he goes no NFL goes no twenty drafted, not just
free eight, No.

Speaker 3 (23:25):
Twenty.

Speaker 5 (23:26):
They have twenty guys who should be getting a call
on a cell phone, are getting their name announced in
the green are coming, hugging their mom and dad and
dapping up their family and their agent in the green room,
and walking out and hugging Goodell and getting a jersey twenty.

Speaker 4 (23:40):
I had a couple more college notes to get to.
I also wanted to get to Dion, But I want
you to know that we've had two grand prize winners

Speaker 3 (24:39):
Everything?

Speaker 7 (24:40):

at the age.

Speaker 3 (26:34):
Of eighty one.

Speaker 7 (26:35):
We'll hear another call or two of his in about
ten to fifteen minutes.

Speaker 4 (26:39):
Back to you, all right, thanks SOT the Sega, VJ Husky,
Arni Span, you're in for the guys, Jason Smith at
his best friend Mike Harmon right here on Fox Sports Radio.
By the way, Plank and I filling in tomorrow, and
then of course my normal Sunday show, and then Plank
and I back here on Tuesday. VJ, You're filling in
next week for the odd couple on Thursday.

Speaker 5 (27:03):
On Thursday, and then of course Saturday's four to seven
West Coast, seven to ten East Coast, the new weekend
Hotness Man Martin and.

Speaker 3 (27:11):
V JA to Two Vanilla Brothers show.

Speaker 5 (27:13):
Yeah, the two Vanilla brother two Light Skin, the two
light Skin brothers in here, all emotional, going at it
every damn show.

Speaker 3 (27:18):
All right.

Speaker 4 (27:19):
I want to get to Dion Sanders. Yes, uh, he
was in the news today.

Speaker 3 (27:24):
Man.

Speaker 4 (27:24):
I'm telling you this Colorado team, I don't know. People
are betting them to win the championship and now your
people say you better bet the other four wins or
four and a half wins, they're not going to be
very good. You're at Bernie say that their offense looks fantastic,
but their defense can't stop a marching man. They had
practice today. There was a little bit of a skirmish
going on right Some people were throwing punches, and I

(27:47):
guess part of the team was going off the field.
Here's Dion Sanders talking to his team.

Speaker 3 (27:53):
I see two of y'all walking off home, and you
gotta keep team, make fight?

Speaker 2 (27:57):
What do nowhere? Not here?

Speaker 6 (28:02):
Whatever?

Speaker 4 (28:03):
What like? We all fight?

Speaker 8 (28:04):
You understand that.

Speaker 3 (28:05):
I don't want to see you walking off put somebody's fight.

Speaker 7 (28:08):
I'm never here.

Speaker 3 (28:11):
You like that?

Speaker 4 (28:12):
But if one of us fights, we all fight? Is
is that what you want? If there's a little bit
of pushing and shoving among two guys, make sure the
other fifty nine guys or the other ninety eight guys
are in there, and everybody's throwing punches, let's make it worse, right?

Speaker 3 (28:24):
Is that what I'm the understand of this or what VJ.

Speaker 5 (28:27):
It's not making it worse, it's building team toughness and
building team.

Speaker 3 (28:31):
I love this I love this. We listen.

Speaker 5 (28:33):
It's like I always say, in a fight, right, if
you're with a group of guys, you fight a group
of guys, okay, there's always gonna be somebody there to
break it up.

Speaker 3 (28:41):
There's gonna be somebody to started.

Speaker 5 (28:42):
There's gonna be somebody your group that's gonna be the peacemaker,
that guy to try to break it up. There's gonna
be one guy to walk away. There's gonna be one
guy to throw a punch with you. I'm I'm now
closer friends with the guy who threw the punch with me.
I understand the peacemaker, the guy that walked away. You
can't come to the club with me no more. You
can't come to the bar with me no more. You
can't come to the cookout with me no more, because
you walk the way we came together.

Speaker 3 (29:01):
Shouldn't you be trying to break it up though?

Speaker 2 (29:03):
Is that what?

Speaker 3 (29:04):
That's what one friend's for?

Speaker 5 (29:05):
But there's one friend that's had too much Hennessy and
tequila and he helping start to fight.

Speaker 3 (29:09):
But that's your boy, that's who you came with.

Speaker 5 (29:11):
You already know, you already know how VJ is. So
this is nothing new to you. So you're gonna throw
a punch with me and then we'll we'll listen. I'm
gonna be mad in the car on the way home,
so that has to get into a fight because of you.
I'm gonna be mad in the car.

Speaker 4 (29:22):
Is this like a little bit of Eric b Enemy
being a little bit too tough?

Speaker 3 (29:25):
No, no, no, these people are soft man.

Speaker 5 (29:27):
Alex and I were just talking to that during break
Society is too soft, which leads into sports too.

Speaker 3 (29:32):
It's just too soft. I love this.

Speaker 5 (29:33):
I hate to admit this because I didn't like the
way Dion really sold us a bill of goods at
Jackson State and the way that he did the HBCUs
that I'm connected. So I'm connected to HBCUs personally in
my life through different relatives. I Deon is starting. It's
starting to feel like he's gonna turn this around. It's
starting to really feel.

Speaker 4 (29:52):
I don't like the way he cut the kids, but
I guess being directed. Honest, I can't really falter for that.
I just don't like the way he sent the message.

Speaker 5 (29:59):
Hey listen, when they're fifty five years old, they're gonna
tell that story to their grandkid.

Speaker 3 (30:04):
That's complaining to them.

Speaker 5 (30:05):
Oh granddad, somebody at the at the Starbucks and my
part time job is treating me this way or talking
me and say, he's gonna look and said, let me
tell you something, young man. Back in twenty twenty three,
I played at University of Colorado. You don't know who
Deon Sanders was, but he was my coach. You know
what he did one day and he's gonna tell him
the story, and he's gonna say, suck it up, suck
it the hell up.

Speaker 3 (30:25):
Okay, life ain't fair. Life is tough.

Speaker 5 (30:27):
You're gonna get knocked down a bunch sometimes take a
standard account, but get up, dust yourself off, and go
forward again. It's not about how many times you get
knocked down. It's about how many times you get up.
And this is a get up moment. Man, don't y'all
like you said, our a point player over there in
the fight. You walking away from the.

Speaker 3 (30:44):
Fight right night. I'm with you. So so what if
you fight? Everybody's fighting that every all nine and I
better be on that.

Speaker 5 (30:50):
Field yet, right everybody, listen, In baseball, what happens when
a scuffle happens.

Speaker 3 (30:55):
The whole damn bullpen runs out there. In basketball, you
can't leave the bench. That's well, that's cause in basketball
we know ain't nobody gonna fight. We know ain't nobody
in the NBA today. This ain't the piss.

Speaker 5 (31:07):
This ain't my beloved Pistons and and and the Nikobocha's
back in the nineties and eighties that made them things.

Speaker 3 (31:14):
But we an't know.

Speaker 5 (31:15):
Ain't nobody in today's NBA. John Walla is famous for saying, yeah,
talk a lot of trash. No one's gonna fight me,
no one's gonna punch me. Like John wall said to himself,
no one's gonna punch me. But to Dion, I like
this man, and like I said, I ripped him for
what he did. But I'm always hoping for new information.
I could change my mind. And the more stories I'm
hearing out of Colorado and seeing stuff like this, this

(31:35):
stuff works.

Speaker 3 (31:36):
Aren't he trust me? We don't like it today, But
you don't think that those kids. He don't care if we.

Speaker 6 (31:40):
Don't like it.

Speaker 5 (31:41):
No, he didn't do it for us. He did it
for those kids in that team and they got you
saw how quick they talked up. Right, where do we
do that at? Not here, sir, where we do not here.
You saw how quick that was, right. They didn't have
to mumble it out. They let him know not here, sir.
That's what you need in today's sports. The interesting Colorado
is through the roof. You think they're playing through the
into the playoffs. That's how good they are.

Speaker 4 (32:01):
Bro.

Speaker 5 (32:02):
You see how happy Joel Klat's been, our colleague here
over at FS one, who I love.

Speaker 2 (32:06):
I love him.

Speaker 3 (32:07):
Oh man, he went to Colorado.

Speaker 5 (32:09):
Yeah, he had played quarterback there by him and Gus Johnson.
I mean, I don't know if there's a better college
football calling game than those two guys right there.

Speaker 3 (32:15):
But I mean, Deon, you know, he's getting the alumni
back in it.

Speaker 5 (32:19):
They listen, did you see the picture of the difference
from the spring game last year to the crowd of
the spring game. Okay, that's the Deon saying, that's the
prime time effect, that's the that's there's not one player
they were there to see.

Speaker 3 (32:32):
They there to see what is Deon Sanders gonna do?
Because like them or not?

Speaker 6 (32:37):
What is it?

Speaker 7 (32:38):
What is it?

Speaker 3 (32:38):
What is he's always done in his What is he
always done?

Speaker 9 (32:41):
There's no doubt about that. He's always won polarizing. He's
always won. Yeah, tell me, tell me what level he
didn't win on He's he's always won. He didn't get
the World Series, but he was played.

Speaker 3 (32:51):
He played well, say, you know we didn't win the
World serious, but but but he.

Speaker 5 (32:56):
Was their best player. He was Atlanta's best player. If
they don't won the World Series, he'd have won m
v p M.

Speaker 3 (33:00):
He was there. Beck, Hey, just go back and watch
the games, tip tape. Don't lie big year for them
five hundred. What do you think.

Speaker 5 (33:07):
Well, it's gonna take some time, that's the thing. It's
gonna take some time TCU to open up. Listen, man,
the TCU game. One thing about college football, there's no preseason.
You don't get the scrimmage, intersquad with other teams. We
don't know what we're gonna get. We really don't. He's
got some athletes, though, that kid.

Speaker 2 (33:23):
Travis Hunter.

Speaker 3 (33:24):
Let's not forget.

Speaker 5 (33:25):
He was the number one ring high school player coming
out and they you know, Nio got him to Jackson
State and then he transferred.

Speaker 3 (33:31):
This is still the number one.

Speaker 5 (33:32):
Player everybody in the nation, Saban Dabbo, Kirby Harball, They
they all wanted this kid. He's with Dion right now,
and they said he's gonna pull the Charles Woodson. He's
gonna play both ways this year. What if we missed, Well,
tell you what we missed.

Speaker 4 (33:47):

Speaker 4 (34:30):
All right, Welcome back, vj Husky Ardy Span. You're in
for the guys, Jason Smith at his best friend Mike
Harmon right here at the tire rech dot Com studios
are Big and Steve the Sager.

Speaker 3 (34:40):
See what we've missed so far? What's going on the saga?

Speaker 7 (34:42):
Well, you guys were mentioning how much NFL talent might
be on this Michigan team. It got me to thinking,
I know George is set the record for most players
from one school in one draft a year and a
half ago. It was fifteen.

Speaker 3 (34:55):
Wow.

Speaker 7 (34:56):
But I do remember Troy Aikman's UCLA team games were
superb and granted, your entire roster doesn't become draft eligible
the same year, but from his teammates it was at
least twenty two draft choices. UCLA his senior year was
ranked number one in the country. So something to look
for as Harbaugh and company start this season.

Speaker 4 (35:18):
I can't wait for college I feel like, but all
the realignment we've not paid attention.

Speaker 3 (35:23):
And I always hate Week.

Speaker 4 (35:24):
Zero, even though it's not week zero anymore, it's week one.
With all the Boloney games, I get so mad at
some of the bad matchups. Here's a chance for college
football to, you know, really take the spotlight before the NFL.

Speaker 7 (35:35):
They don't do it because the NFL doesn't start till
after the Labor day of a game. Yeah, so you'll
get a lot of that first week end of September.
You'll get a lot of college football in the week
before that late August. As we were talking about earlier,
the Dublin game with Notre Dame against Navy. Well, we
got to mention once again the name of Rick Jennerrett,
the long time Buffalo Sabers announcers, passed away at the

(35:57):
age of eighty one. A couple of his legendary calls.

Speaker 8 (36:01):
Keep it in mind, he was the Savers announcer starting
in the early seventies, so he saw them in the
Stanley Cup Final in the seventies and then many many
years later the.

Speaker 3 (36:13):
Shot hurt around the hockey world and Chas and Woolley
has won.

Speaker 1 (36:18):
That came in over time here at the reel Innarita
the low.

Speaker 6 (36:23):
Savers first victory and Stanley Cup final action in twenty.

Speaker 7 (36:28):
Four years with Dami Kassick in Golden.

Speaker 6 (36:34):
Ut them a reculous sign what Ruby worthy shit.

Speaker 4 (36:48):
You know I gotta save because you know, my wife
is from Buffalo and we lived there for a couple
of years before we moved to Vermont. She us she
had season tickets. Their family would go to the Bills
game and then the Savers game on Sunday night. They
knew nothing other than Rick Jennerrett. My wife was six
years old when Rick Jennerrett started, or something to that effect.

Speaker 7 (37:09):
So basically when the team started until he retired about
a year ago.

Speaker 4 (37:12):
Yeah, exactly, and I mean it's it's just a staple
of the Buffalo Sabers though all those years, and he
did pull back on some of the years, but most
of those years full schedules up to the last couple
of years.

Speaker 3 (37:25):
Absolutely amazing.

Speaker 7 (37:26):
He was the longest tenured broadcaster with a single team
in the history of the NHL. Passed away at the
age of eighty one. Not only in the team Hall
of Fame, but in the How long was Ben with
the Dodgers sixty seven?

Speaker 5 (37:41):
I think it's safe to say neither one of those
gentlemen worked the day in their life.

Speaker 2 (37:44):
Wow.

Speaker 3 (37:45):
Yeah, Vid will say that it works, it would work,
didn't work a day in their life.

Speaker 7 (37:49):
The greatness of listening to Vin Scully is he would
tell us these stories about like Jackie Robinson, for example,
he knew Jackie Robinson. This wasn't just history to him,
this was his life she was talking about. Aside for
the fact of how poetic and on top of it,
you know, he was just to me. Still, Vin Scully
is the greatest sports announcer period any sport that we

(38:10):
have had.

Speaker 3 (38:11):
Think yet Vin chick Hern when we were out there
in La.

Speaker 7 (38:14):
Yeah, Lakers, and then Bob Miller. You talking about Bob
Miller announcer. Bob Miller was about forty years probably with
the other Kings.

Speaker 3 (38:21):
I'm with you on, Steve, I'm with you there, man.
I put Vin number one, and.

Speaker 7 (38:25):
He wound up being the number one voice of the
NFL on the early eighties. If you look back at
the famed Joe Montana sends the forty nine ers to
the Super Bowl beating the Cowboys in the NFC Championship
game the past to Dwight Clark, that's Vin Scully announcing
the game. He was CBS's announcer.

Speaker 8 (38:43):
He used to.

Speaker 7 (38:44):
In fact, nineteen eighty one he missed a Dodger World
Series game on a Sunday because he had CBS NFL
two ds.

Speaker 3 (38:52):
Wow.

Speaker 7 (38:53):
He was early eighties there announcer. Of course, he was
golf announcer for Network TV for many many years.

Speaker 3 (38:58):
Now.

Speaker 5 (38:58):
I want to mess a storia, but I think it
Bernie Fraddle's Book of You from the Chief Seas. There's
a story there about Vince Scully helping out Losorta eventually
getting that job there with my minor league team that
actually led to that. So, I mean he was a
a Spokane Yeah, there you go, then came down, do

(39:20):
you go? So I mean that guy just That's why
I always praised the Ogs man like you just I'm serious,
and I don't say that that's not the case.

Speaker 7 (39:28):
On the original original.

Speaker 5 (39:29):
I love the Ogs because it's the stories, the experience,
and if you don't learn from a OG, you're just
missing the boat man. Like they've been through it, they've
done it. So I'm with you there, man Scully, Yeah,
he's number one.

Speaker 7 (39:41):
As soon as you mentioned helping out the manager, I
thought of the old Vin Scully story before Lesorta came
on as manager and they had old Walter Alston in
the mid seventies. You know, anyone who went to Dodger
Stadium back then, you could hear Vin Scully on the
transistor radios. Yeah, in the stadium while you're watching the game,
whether you brought a radio or not. You go back

(40:01):
and watch the clips of the sixty five World Series,
you can hear Ben in the background in the stadium.
This was a meaningless late season game at one point,
and he was told that he can tell the runner
whether to steal, and everybody's listening in the stadium, so
he said, he sends out the message. Okay, Ron Fairley
leading up first, he's gonna steal, and he tries to

(40:24):
see it as a foul ball, and he has to
come back, and it's a hot day. And then the
next one's fouled, doll, you have to come back. He
was bet ready to pass out the runner. Thanks a
lot for all this, for sending the decisions up to
Vin in the booth. Last ad with the Dodgers winning
on the Austin Barnes homer tonight. Before tonight, he was
batting one twenty three with no homers and wounds up,

(40:46):
winds up the hero one nothing over Milwaukee.

Speaker 3 (40:48):
All right, I love it, Steve. We got we got
to wrap it up. Okay.

Speaker 4 (40:53):
Barbasur coming up next right here on Fox Sports Radio.
