(01:09):
content out for you every single day. Subscribe and evangelize.
Very simple succeed and proceed, subscribe and evangelize, so big
stuff out of the NFL. We'll get to Rashie Rice.
We will also get to the latest wishing door Sanders
and Joe Mixon. But couple of stories that quarterback stories. First,

(01:32):
a fun one. Then what I'm concerned about. We told
you last night touchdown Tommy was going to find a
place to play and Tommy DeVito, Tommy Cutlets, we told
you he's going to get a gig because he is
a capable backup quarterback who from time to time can
move an offense with a very limited ceiling. It sounds
like a backhanded complent, but that's Tommy DeVito. I mean

(01:54):
it is, but it is. Yeah. Now, depending on your perspective, sure,
touchdown Tommy or turnover Tommy, whatever you want to say.
Touchdown the real Tommy. Now in Newing, we got Tommy
again because Tommy DeVito, Tommy Patriot will be backing up
Drake May with the New England Patriots. Saw me touchdown Tommy,
turnover touchdown or turnover Tommy? Touchdown Tommy touchdown. We'll just

(02:17):
wait till they replace Brady's statue for his And there's
gonna be a guy outside making chicken cutlet sandwiches for
everyone standing right outside the statue. Yeah, think about that?
Is he made up to look like his greasy agent.
Oh no, I think the guy's just gonna beas laker,

(02:38):
a big chainy. You leave signed guy alone. You know,
I think we've still just did we talk about guys
just making just the guy making the food. That's all
he's got, fully in character. I will say this. I
will say this, Right, we talked about you. Now we
got food on the brain. Yeah, we talked about the
Chipotle story a few minutes ago. The best sausage and

(03:00):
pepper sandwich I've ever had, which people make outside of
every sporting event, right, best sausage in pepper sandwich I
ever had outside of Fenway Park without a doubt, Like
I had to said, Oh my god, it's like I've
seen the face of God. This is unbelievable. This is
why it's just so good. And people around me were like, yeah, yeah,
it's the best here. It's the best here. And because

(03:21):
they make it outside outside of the crypt, outside of
the crypt, outside ever, you can get sausage and pepper
sandwiches everywhere. Best I ever without a doubt outside of
Fenway Park. I still there's few sandwiches in my life
that I remember eating that were just so good that
I still remember, and that's one of them. Oh no,
I don't know. I mean no, I mean I didn't
check for any of that. I was hungry after a game.
It's the best, it was. It was the best. I

(03:44):
still remember a corn beef sandwich I had when I
was nineteen years old that at that point it was
the best sandwich I ever had, best sausage and pepper
sandwich at at Fenway Park, without a doubt. There you go.
Per so great tour, by the way, if you've never
done it, at fed good times. Monty gives tours outset
for a Dodger Stadium about maybe we should go hang

(04:05):
out with it. We go hang out with Monty, get
a tour. We can heckle her on on the tour
as well. Why would you do that? I'm just saying,
you know, hey, she's our teammate. Here, where's my bobble?
What three four? Oh? You went full four four bibbleheads?
So you really screwed that up. Yeah, well that's all right.
I'll get back to zero. I'll get back to you
gonna do that because I buy food for people, and

(04:27):
if Monty wants, but if you're still French fries and stuff,
then I gotta get bobbleheads. If I don't get bobbleheads,
people don't get French fries. It's kind of how it goes.
I don't know why I need to do it. I
don't know if it started to drift towards the Boston
like watch you dance down that highway. But look a
quarterback situation I am really concerned about that is not

(04:50):
getting enough attention af the Jets. Oh well that gets
enough attention. And listen, as I said, Justin Fields will
run for a thousand yards and throw for a thousand
yards this year. Just watch, like in high school. That
would be a great season. But I fold a. It'll
run for one thousand and throw for one thousand. Now,
if they won enough, he won enough with that, that'd

(05:11):
be revolutionary. Yeah, oh sure, if they win with that,
like we throw a and was what was he throwing
the football? He was three out of nine for a
touchdown thirty seven yards. Oh, it's a good day. What
was he rushing? Twenty two rushes one hundred and fifty
three yards. What about Preest Hall ran for one hundred
and eleven? What about Braylon Allen one hundred and thirty five? Wow?
And it looks like a college football Saturday when like

(05:33):
Oklahoma is playing Alcoa state. You know, look at that score.
I mean it worked for Herman throw the football. They
ran six plays. It only ran see here's the thing,
and then they ran that, you know, just to bring
it back if you listened to the show I read,
I just to give you a ending on that. Like
I actually went back and looked how many plays Herman

(05:54):
Boone ran and it was a very limited playbook. But
it wasn't six, which is ridiculous in the movie, but
it was like fifteen. It was like fifteen or twenty.
But I'm like, okay, fifteen or twenty play high schol level,
because how many plays can you really run? Six plays?
Can't win with six plays, man, you can't win with
six plays. I'm sorry. Whether Ryan Gosling is playing cornerback
and he can't cover anybody. And you got Donald at
clearly not a scrub in this episode. Uh, what doesn't matter.

(06:19):
You're killing me people plays you run plays? By the way,
Denzel who hates what we do for a living. Yeah,
says go to the movies, opinionaire, I stopped watching movies. Okay,
that's nice, and then stop out promoting a movie. Yeah, hey,
good on them. I'm sorry you're still gonna line up
in a training dame before the weekend ends. I'm so sorry.

(06:40):
You hate what you do for it, then stop doing it,
and then stop doing it. You keeps saying it's gonna retire, retire,
and I'll probably retire. Remember the Titans again because it
is a staple. But you know, you just have to
steal from Brett Hart if you're gonna run six plays
the excellence of execution. The quarterback situation, I am most
nervous for now seeing the movement that this team has

(07:01):
had in the past couple of days. Right, you had
the headlines that they parted ways with their previous backup
quarterback because he was no good during the regular during
the preseason, and then went out and got an old
friend to play wide receiver this year. Today, the Vikings
thought they had the guy backing up JJ McCarthy with
Sam Howe was starting experience and he is flashed, wasn't

(07:22):
good enough, replaced him with Carson Wentz, who has shown
that he was no longer good enough to start, but
okay as a backup. Their receivers are all hurt. You know,
once you have a soft tissue injury going into a season,
you just have to cross your fingers and say how
long can you stay healthy? And that's justin Jefferson already
got the situation with Jordan Addison. They go out and

(07:43):
they signed Adam Thielen, which is a great move. You know,
he was a really big player there for a long time.
I might have gone out and got Hunter Renfro because
Renfro clearly showed you see some of the stuff he's
able to do in camp, like how does he not
stick with the Panthers? Really? But they go out and
get Adam Thielen. I am really nervous Minnesota. Can I

(08:05):
borrow a feeling TJ. I am really nervous for JJ McCarthy.
I know that he is shown in camp this year
and what I've read and people that I've talked to, Yeah,
it wasn't too big for him in camp. Okay, but
the pressure on you because they kicked a quarterback to
the curb that showed up and threw thirty five touchdowns

(08:26):
through for four thousand yards. It got you to the
playoffs when it looked like the season was over, and
the Vikings decided, no, we don't want that. We want
you because we drafted you in the first round. And
I'm the first guy to tell you JJ McCarthy was overdrafted.
He was. Jim Harbaugh's college offenses are always quarterback friendly.

(08:46):
The quarterbacks are in a position to succeed, but he
doesn't ask too much of them because he wants to
run the football down your throat into oblivion. Right. All
the work has done in the trenches. The offenses that
he likes to build is from that way. Yeah, and
it's what he's doing with the Charger. You No, he's
got a much better quarterback than Justin Herbert. And he
realized last year, Okay, I can't come in and just
decide I'm going to bring in running backs from the

(09:08):
Ravens who can't stay healthy and expect we're gonna run
it to him. But they still got to the play
It was still a big season for the Charges, and
he realized, Okay, I gotta give Justin Herbert a little
bit more. He's the best quarterback that i've had. But
at Michigan, JJ McCarthy wasn't asked to do a lot,
And there were games where he was invisible, big games
where he was invisible. Now he made some big plays.
Is athletic, he can make every throw, he checks all

(09:30):
the boxes. But he wasn't asked to do a lot.
In college. He had a lot of great weapons around him, right,
it didn't matter. He had two great running backs at
all times. He had two or three good receivers. He
had Colston Lovelin, who's a first round pick of the Bears.
He had guy, he had dudes. Man Roman Wilson was
a great wide receiver. He had dudes in college. Now
he's here in the NFL. Okay, Well, now he's got

(09:51):
weapons around him, but now they're hurt. And is JJ
McCarthy going to be able to win games by himself?
All you don't become a great quarterback the NFL. He
was overdrafted. I'm nervous and there then the Vikings have
so much cashe and real estate out there because it's
not like, well, we went out and drafted JJ McCarthy

(10:11):
and we got it wrong. Right, that happens with quarterback, Right,
that happens. You've been looking for a quarterback, you got
rid of Kirk Cousins. What do we do and Sam
Donald shows up and it's it's it's found money. It's
like you you woke up one morning, saw a rainbow,
walked to the end of it and found a pot
of gold. Oh my goodness. But no, no, no, yeah,
we're gonna move on from Sam Donald because we just
drafted JJ McCarthy. Wait a minute, you have a guy

(10:33):
that just showed you as much as I thought about
Sam Darnald. This, this tells you that when you hit
the right system as an NFL quarterback, you can succeed. Right,
it's not that you stink, categorically, it's you stink, but
you have to find the right system that can turn
you into a star. Baker Mayfield, boy, he was good,
but then he stunk. Now he found the right system.
Best best he's ever been in his NFL career now
with Tampa Bay right Gino Smith back up for years,

(10:55):
found a great system in Seattle, now as a system
in Las Vegas, and now he's gonna make one hundred
and fifty million dollars over the course of his career.
Same thing was true for Sam Darnold, took him four teams,
but he got to one that absolutely worked, and the
Viking said, yeah, sorry, we want the guy we drafted
whoa like I understand that, but you you so you
had a guy come to come into your house. It's

(11:18):
like you had a free home renovation where Tdy Pennington
showed up with a bullhorn and a bunch of decorators.
They said, we're gonna move this out and they came
in and all of a sudden, they added a level
to your house and and they added a basement, and
you have a swimming pool, and you have a gondola,
and you have a you have pergolas in the back,
and you have a you have a movie room in
the basement, and you have it and you say, hey, great,

(11:39):
thanks pall I just wanted, yeah, Greg get out and
you boot him out because hey, I like the other
person and hasn't decorated anything, and they're gonna stay and
decorate the rest of the house. Oh I know you're
gonna say. And then the property got reevaluated and reassessed
and now you can't afford the taxes, so you have
to move. Like that's what happened. And by the way,
you want to explain the millennials time, Penny, I'm sorry. Yes,
he's the guy.

Speaker 2 (11:58):
I know.

Speaker 1 (11:58):
He sells you that he's a Chad's dad, right, yes, yeah, dude,
can I and I can I tell you? He made
it famous on all these home makeover shows, right and
I first saw him on Trading Spaces, which was the
original home makeover show. Pam and I watched that in
the late nineties early two thousands, and she was like,
she loved Typeen. She thought he was hot. I love Typenno.
Every episode he does the same thing. He comes to

(12:21):
the host and says, I don't know that I can
make this in the allotted time. Like that's every dude,
this is what you're supposed to do. You're supposed to
make this for the rule. I don't know that I
can make this. You can't come to me and say
that this is your job. But that's like every episode.
All that does is it proves that they were watching
Scooby Doo and I would have gotten away with it
if it wasn't for the meddling. Kids say, but look,

(12:43):
you look at the offense and there will be a regression.
I think Sam Darnold is a guy that got a
raw deal at the back end of day. Not that
he should have stayed necessarily, but that all blame went
to him. Kevin O'Connell, like, I don't know what it
is in our media, right, Chris Ballard gets a free
pass in Indianapolis for things that have gone on and
decisions that have been made. And here, Kevin O'Connell, what

(13:05):
are you gonna do? No, it was all the way.
It was suddenly all Sam Donald, well in the biggest games,
suddenly n well, No, you won fourteen games. It wasn't
by accident. Now that we're close games. You won a
lot of one possession games that maybe go. A few
of those gore the other way, which is why you
got an eight and a half total. Here, but thelan
comes in. He's a good sit down receiver. You have Hockinson,

(13:26):
You've got a good back in Aaron Jones. You've got
some depth at the running back position. You'll be fine.
That could be great. And McCarthy doesn't need to have
the world on his shoulder. That's the beauty of it. Yeah,
but now what went with your weapons out? Yeah, he does,
and he's got to show he's got to show that
I'm Sam Donald. I never thought i'd say that he's
got a show I'm Sam Donald. Or what's gonna happen?

(13:48):
Like we let the wrong quarterback go and he's never
gonna recover from it. He's the guy I'm most the
quarterback situation. I'm most nervous about Justin Fie. No, I
know what I'm getting from Justin Fields and not nervous
about that at all. M JJ McCarthy, the expectations, I mean,
he was never asked to win games at Michigan. He
was never asked to be that guy. He had great highlights.

(14:09):
He was a good quarterback. He's on a great team,
the best best team that Harball ever had, all that
NFL talent, he was never asked to do what the
Viking is going to ask him to do. You know
how they could do a great misdirection? How's that bring
back Ragnar? That would be fun. Oh and the third
interception of this half for JJ McCarthy. But there's motorcycle

(14:31):
out there in the middle of the field. I forget
that it's thirty five nothing, I forget that we're losing.
He remember him, Hey, Hey, do the Yawler horn exit

That's Covino and Rich Fox Sports Radio, The Jason Smith
Show with my best friend Mike Harmon Live from the
Fox Sports Radio studios. Now you've heard the promo running
the last week or so about how we're all ready
for football, ready for football, Like I always know when
I'm ready for the NFL. You know, something happens, I
know I'm ready, and I know I'm ready for college football. Yeah,

(17:22):
when whenever I have a dream that involves Syracuse or
the or you know, I know I'm ready. Now I'm
an in zombiac, but you really have vivid dreams. I
don't remember some regularity like this whole week has been
you know, the lead up to Syracuse, Tennessee has been
a player on Tennessee this week said, oh we're they're

(17:44):
They're not the real Orange We're the real orange. I'm like, dude,
Oranges literally are nickname? Come on man? Uh So it
was it was you know, I was thinking about that
and was talking about that with my wife last night
when I got home, like you believe that all this stuff,
and I had a dream that and and the thing
is we just you really get mad about can you know?
I'm like, no, so so last night, and this is

(18:07):
what it is like whatever I'm talking about before. I
guess this is a thing for for everybody. But generally,
if I'm talking about something right before I go to sleep,
it's something I wound up having a dream about days
with no I know a lot of it is a
this is what the day was all about that influenced,
but usually I'm talking about something. So we're talking about that.
And then last night we also our car is in
the garage this week getting fixed, so we have so
we have a rental and we're talking about when do

(18:29):
we get the car backs. You thought we get the
car back on Friday? Okay, great, we can go here.
We go here with a car. So we're talking about cars.
I had a dream last night that we went to
the dealership and we bought a new car. And it
was a Jeep and it was an orange Jeep with
blue doors and a Syracuse S on on all the doors.

(18:50):
And I was so excited to get it. And the
S was like cartoonishly big on the door, like yeah,
and I was. I opened the door, got it like
it was a real and it was a really high
step up for me to get into. The dude, it was.
I was so excited. It's one of the things and
it woke up. I was like wow, like, ah, we
don't have that car. We don't an orange car with

(19:11):
blue doors and the S. I was like, I would
have drive this thing all over the place. But here's
the thing. You can make that happen. You can make
that choice today. I don't know. I don't know, man,
I don't know. Mellow probably has it. I would have
to okay, I wouldn't you want to be more of
a more school spirit than Mellow. I would you do?
I would have to tell Pam. I I got an

(19:34):
accent with the car. I brought it in there working
on it and meanwhile, what I'm doing, I'm getting it
painted orange and the door's blue and the snows logo
and I'm picking it up and I'm driving at home
and she's coming outside and meet walking out, just going wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait,
let me explain, Like that's like you're telling me you
can't get a deal for a paint job like that
out of a guy running a car lot near Syracuse

(19:56):
to where you have some kind of deal.

Speaker 5 (19:58):
I could.

Speaker 1 (19:59):
I'm sure a big deal. Driving up and down these highways,
these weary highways were hundreds of thousands of cars see
you on a daily basis, I am sure I could
get that car. I don't know that I would be
married after I got that car. She'd get over it,
and I, like being far worse. There'd be no there'd
be like like Jimmy Simon again, like Jimmy says in

(20:20):
pulp fiction, there'd be no trial separation, but there'd be
no counseling. I'm getting blank and divorced. Okay, none of that, Okay, Uh,
I don't believe that. No. I would come up. You
know what she would do. She would see it, and
I would smile walking out, and she would just turn
and walk back into the house, and I would go, Uh,
she'd run you over. No, No, she would she The
first thing she would say is I'm never driving that car, Okay,

(20:42):
to be the first thing, which means she's packing her
clothes to figure out where she's gonna go stay, she's
leaving home. Was not gonna happen. By not gonna happen,
that'd be a hell of a car. If anybody could
do a custom like little die cast car like I'll
and you a you know, hot wheels. If we can

(21:03):
make that happen for Jay was basically the way he
described it, that'd be great. It was a nice orange
like the orange color was really cool. And then the
blue on the doors. Ah, it was so great. I'm
gonna make this happen. And it's like the doors that
were wings with with the s on them. They were
like wings. I'm gonna fly in this car, baby, I'm
flying like Crypto the super Dog. Uh So, yeah, we're

(21:25):
ready for football. I think all of us we are
ready for football. Yeah, I mean Saturday pillar to post.
I mean we get some Friday night. Yeah, may you
get your appetizer be on Fox Big Games on Saturday, Syracuse, Tennessee.
Is it's so okay? Well and you and plus you
got the game on Sunday too, right, you get the
big game on Sunday your dame, Yeah you got and Saturday,

(21:45):
of course you have Ohio State and uh minus Dave
Portnoy Uh big nude kickoff in the house. Uh. Taking
on test means he can't go into that set. He'll
be there. Okay, he's gonna be like waldo Is. It's
gonna be popping up all day. Are they going to
find a way to put him on with some kind
of craziness? Right at the end, as Lee Corsa was

(22:06):
saying his final goodbye, you know, wearing different, wearing the
hat for the last time. You mean he's gonna crash
their set? Uh, now, so we'll have more football comes
down from the top. You're just sitting there with his bat.

(22:28):
They start playing pomping circumstance like it's a macho man
Randy Savage that the other sting. Gordon Sumner got sued
today by his ex bandmates said they owe him. Uh,
he owes them a ton of money for the publishing
and all the different iterations of every breath you take.
Really yeah, they're like, we want money. He's an English

(22:50):
New York he is. Anybody want to go fund yourself
some money for me to go see him in the
last ship in Australia next year. It'd be great. That'd
be okay. Let's give you five hours. I bought wings
and I can't. I can't foot the bill for everything.
You know, I can't do it. I got wings. It's
gotta be okay. I got my raise. Do what don't

(23:12):
you call Gordon yourself? Go ahead, called Gordon Sumner, go ahead?
Paying for Zoe to go to Georgetown? I'd like to
see someone make that check. Georgetown? Uh so Georgetown? Hoy,
yes you get If you said, hey, Pam, can can
she go to Can zoey go to Georgetown? Or can
I get this truck? Which one do you think would win?

Speaker 4 (23:33):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (23:33):
She wouldn't care if she went to George. You said
that's your that's your thing, not mine. I would say,
what if she wanted to go to Ohio State?

Speaker 4 (23:38):
No?

Speaker 1 (23:38):
No, But isn't that supposed to be our thing? I
mean you've had to adopt the Michigan thing. You go
there on vacation, you wear Michigan clothes like you went
there for crying out. If it's my time, mister hand,
and it's your time, isn't it our time? You didn't
do that, did you? I just I just I just

(23:58):
went I went full. I went full Spacoli. Oh, you
never go full. You have wasted approximately thirty hours of
my time. It's just Peccoley. So now tonight I'm going
to waste you more. WHOA. So. Dawn Staley, South Carolina
head coach did a podcast earlier today with WNBA star
Leah Boston and former WNBA star Candas Parker. And if

(24:21):
you remember, she was interviewed to be head coach of
the Knicks last year or before they hired Mike Brown,
and she said in her podcast, it's made big news,
like probably about a half far before you get on
the air. She said that if she was offered the job,
she absolutely would have taken it. Quote not just for me,
for women to break that door open, I would have

(24:43):
had to. It's the New York Knicks. I'm from Philly.
We just got swept by the Mets, all right, I
added that part. But it's the freaking New York Knicks. Now,
obviously the Knicks hired Mike Brown instead, but they bring
in Dawn Staley for an interview. In my working lifetime,
I would say so, but sometime before I retire, which
you're looking at the you know, not good the last

(25:04):
Bobby Benia day. Yes, although I don't know man last
Bobby mean, that's a long time anyway, but some so
it's not something I can say in the next three
to five years. Yeah, but sometimes I think in the net,
you know, in my in my working lifetime, we will
see a female head coach in the NBA. The world
is simply going that way. And you have seen a

(25:27):
couple of things now that you you kind of have
to run up against the wall and run up against
it before you break through. Right. What's the John Henry
line from from the from money Ball? Hey, the first
guy through the wall always gets bloody, Right, you need
to run against that wall and try to break through it.
And we have had now over the course of the
past few years. Becky Hammond be what possibly could have

(25:49):
been the coach in waiting for San Antonio with Greg
Popovich staying. And I wouldn't be surprised if the plan
initially was to have pop go as long as he
wants Becky Hammond as his assistant, and eventually she takes
over after ten or twelve years of Hey, I'm deep
in the culture in the program learning what she did
from Greg Popitch. But obviously different things happened. She was

(26:10):
a coach in waiting for a while, or she was
there for a while, she went to the WNBA. Greg
Popovich had to step down, he had health issues, and
now they're in a different direction. So things changed. But
I wouldn't be surprised if that was okay. You had
her on the sideline coach, you had her step in
and actually coach games when pop got thrown out a
couple of times in the preseason, and now you have
Don Staley getting the interview with the Knicks, and the

(26:33):
Knicks didn't have to do this. This is what the
Knick's doing something to curry favor and say, look, we're
doing this. This was hey down. Staley is a phenomenal
head coach. She is full of class. She's the you
take you want to say, Okay, let's think outside the
box a little bit. Don Staley is that person. And
I still go back to when she won the national
title of South Carolina, when they beat the crap out

(26:54):
of Iowa, and in her postgame speech when it's about
her and her team and what they achieved, she made
sure to stet up and thank Caitlin Clark and IOWA
and what they accomplished to get them around of applause,
which is a really classy thing to do.

Speaker 5 (27:08):
Now.

Speaker 1 (27:08):
I get it's easy to do classy things when you
win then when you lose, but that's still something taking
away from your celebration to point out an individual player
and the team that you just vanquished. Dawn Stanley would
be that person, and she got an interviewed because this
is the coach that she is. The NBA is kind
of moving that way, and I say it's going to
be a professional coach in the NBA more than other sports,

(27:28):
just because this is where they're at at this point,
they're closest there. But the NBA also think about what
teams go through in the offseason hire a coach, like
there's been what are they who are they talking to?

Speaker 5 (27:39):
Right?

Speaker 1 (27:39):
Are they gonna bring a retread? No, we're gonna talk
to this part. And you get surprised people all the
time that come out of nowhere because the NBA is
constantly looking for new ideas, looking for new people to
come in, looking for new people to set culture. They're
looking at the NBA does it more than anywhere else, right,
you get retreads in the NFL still, right, or you
get the next up and coming offensive defensive coordinator.

Speaker 3 (28:01):
Right.

Speaker 1 (28:01):
The NFL has been in that cycle for a while.
Managers in Major League Baseball come and they go. After
a couple of years, you can win a World Series.
A couple of years later, you're done. But in the
NBA it's there's no there's there's always a dearth of
great candidates because people get chewed up and spit out
much more often. And so you could be someone who
wins a title one year, you have a bad next year,

(28:21):
you're done. Rightle look at Monty Williams, right, I mean,
come on, you see this happen. In the NBA, they
are always looking for what could be next, what could
be new, and they're not gonna push something like this.
But this is the league that's gonna happen. And sometimes,
like I said, my working lifetime, the next ten to
fifteen years, you're gonna see a female head coach in
the NBA, maybe in a big market like New York,

(28:42):
maybe a smaller market like Sacramento, but we're gonna see
it happen. Yeah, I think pretty telling. As Don Staley
went through the process, and some of the questions that
she asked and wondered aloud if that wasn't part of
the reason that it didn't go any further. Right interview
two more conversations about team building, construction, chemistry, et cetera.

(29:03):
Was just the are you ready for this? And have
you considered all the different things that come with me
showing up? You know, in terms of scouting, like, look,
we watched it. You know your favorite movie, Moneyball or whatever. Right,
there's a change in down distance, time and evaluation and
how you're looking at players from generation to generation. And

(29:25):
for Dawn Staley, great success. However, she views that algorithm right,
for lack of a better term, is going to be
different than some of her predecessors others. How to you
know her coming in with assistant coaches, picking your own staff,
all of those working with the front office, all the
different considerations. Players like, players want to be coached, right,

(29:51):
that's the only rule. Right, If you can coach and
you prove it to them, you win. If you prove
after a couple of practices, you can't. We watched this
for guys that had been long tenured in every sport. Right,
We've had plenty of coaches, coaches and waiting through the years.
Jimbo Fisher, go Syracuse. You guys had a guy. How
many guys in Beheim go through that were coaches and

(30:11):
waiting eleven Mike Hopkins stayed for fifteen years be the
coach in waiting and got tired and left. No, but
that's the thing, right, But fortunately in the NBA these days,
guys don't necessarily stick around a lot. You got two
coaches of any length of time right now, and Steve
Kerr and spolstered down in Miami. Then you got Billy

(30:32):
Donovan's the next longest tenured guy. He was hired in
twenty twenty. Yeah, So in terms of that long ramp,
it's not there. Be Hammon was. You had no idea
Pop was gonna get sick and have to step away,
and she was gonna believe she was gonna say an
opportunity to become a head coach look, and I don't look,
And I'll be the first tell ya. This would not
have been the right opportunity to give the first female

(30:55):
her opportunity, because this is this is a NXT team
looking to win a championship. Not that she's not a
great coach. But if this fails, it's it's the knicks. Look,
gratification are huge, Like you're never hiring a woman again.
You're not gonna like the plan the Spurs had with
Becky Hammond there, like that's a great plan, or hiring
a woman to coach a team that you're starting to

(31:16):
come together. But this is the if you're a team
with championship plans and you may and you go really
outside the box for a hire, whether it's a woman
or someone with less with someone with no experience, you
I'm gonna go hire a ted Lasso to come coach
a team whatever that is. That as the ramifications are awful.
So I don't think this was the right opportunity, but
you needed this interview to push this go along and

(31:38):
that's a great thing. Well that's it right. We talked
to the NFL the Rooney Rule and Mike Tomlin like
there's a lot of problems with it. We recognize that,
but it was I think an honest, earnest attempt to
move the needle. And likewise for Dawn Staley, now at
least one team has a bunch of questions and considerations
they didn't have before that conversation about what that would

(32:01):
look like and maybe that goes league wide exit out
about a Fresco exit swollen down the Jason Smith Show
with my best friend Mike Harmon. Tim gotta find out
what's trending in the wide world of sports of someone
who's gonna bring me to Key Hernandez bobblehead.

Speaker 5 (32:14):
We you know it's not next week, it's actually this Sunday.

Speaker 6 (32:20):
Asking for so much.

Speaker 5 (32:21):
When I'm here all day Sunday, when am I going
to see you? You're asking for me to really like
deliver up on a day when I work here all the.

Speaker 1 (32:30):
Afternoon. I'm saying, I'm saying I'm locating the babble head
getting them from you when I see you next week.

Speaker 5 (32:38):
You know obviously that's we'll see you because next Wednesday.

Speaker 1 (32:41):
That's why I said. I'm just saying that next week.

Speaker 5 (32:43):
Yeah, I'm gonna have to like be a magician because
I'm gonna be here all day Sunday.

Speaker 1 (32:47):
Well, you can magically make those babble heads appear on Wednesday.
I don't need him until Wednesday.

Speaker 6 (32:53):
Yes, but he's basically make it to Dodger Stadium Wednesday.

Speaker 1 (32:58):
I don't care the bobbleheads. I will personally tell Keith
Hernandez that you gave them to a Mets fan. I
don't care if you don't have them on Sunday, as
long as I have him on Wednesday.

Speaker 6 (33:09):
You may not even have it. Basically the Dodgers.

Speaker 1 (33:13):
He doesn't care how the sausage is today. The thing
is that that wait, wait, look that's one she told
me the story off the air. It's fine. It's fine.
It's fine. It's fine. It's fine.

Speaker 6 (33:28):
They didn't let me quit. I tried, they didn't let.

Speaker 1 (33:30):
Me got raised. It involves it involves count. It's deferred
like Tommy Content. Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly, pay you in
ten years when we don't own the team anymore.

Speaker 6 (33:40):
Absolutely, exactly, exactly. Speaking of the lawyers. They defeated the
Reds today five to one.

Speaker 5 (33:45):
It's the first time this season that Cincinnati has been swept.

Speaker 6 (33:49):
The A's also just swept the Tigers. What is going on?

Speaker 5 (33:53):
The Tigers the last four in a row, and today
they were shut out seven zero, while the Rangers crushed
the Angels twelve to three. Was the most run scored
by Texas by Texas since twenty eleven. The Mets completed
a three games soup of the Phillies, shedding them out
six to zero. So Mets are four games back of
the Phillies for the top of the division, but also
New York has a four and a half game lead

(34:13):
on Cincinnati for the final wildcard spot in the National League.
There's that the Diamondbacks edge the Brewers lost Column.

Speaker 6 (34:22):
Giant stop the Cubs twelve to three.

Speaker 5 (34:23):
Raphael Devers homer twice at five RBI Blue Jays outscored
the Twins nine to eight.

Speaker 6 (34:29):
Red Sox top the Oels three to two.

Speaker 5 (34:31):
Earlier this morning show, Hey O Tawny hit home run
number forty one of the season, and the Yankees defeated
the Nationals eleven to two. The Braves also hit five
home runs in their game earlier today too, by jerks
and profar.

Speaker 6 (34:41):
They beat Miami twelve to one. Mariners edged the Padres
forty three. Ohen swat Is with a three run shot
in that one.

Speaker 1 (34:48):
Jeeno gez g Yes, oh cue Gino.

Speaker 6 (34:53):
That's cut.

Speaker 1 (34:54):
We always find a way. You have to have a
Gino in Seattle.

Speaker 6 (34:58):
Sure, Oh yes, yeah.

Speaker 1 (35:01):
Du always got to be at least one.

Speaker 5 (35:03):
You're so right, You're just so right now, and I
found he is the league suspending Chiefs wide receiver where
she writes for the first six games of the regular season,
violating the.

Speaker 6 (35:11):
League's personal conduct policy.

Speaker 5 (35:13):
Titans announced that rookie number one overall pick cam Ward
is one of seven team captains this season.

Speaker 6 (35:19):
Jaguars receiver quarterback Travis.

Speaker 5 (35:21):
Hunter not only did he announce that he is a
new daddy, congratulations to the Hunters, but the lead or
the team announced that even though he's been dealing with
a number body injury and didn't play the final two
preseason games, he's healthy and he's going to play in
their season opener against Carolina. When it comes to college football,
Bill Belichick and North Carolina, North Carolina have named their
transfer Geo Lopez as their starting quarterback on Monday against TCU.

Speaker 6 (35:45):
And then the w NBA Aces beat the Dream eighty.

Speaker 5 (35:48):
One to seventy five. Asia Wilson thirty four points and
ten rebounds. Las Vegas has won twelve in a row.

Speaker 1 (35:54):
Thank you very guys, Thank you very much. Mom. You're
so favorite in the world. Good next Wednesday. About getting
them next Wednesday? Next week happen. I'm like the threatening
guy in the movies. You have my money on Wednesday,
or I cut off a finger of your wife. Where's
my money, Brin? Where's my money, Bri? They got money
for fake mustaches and stuff. Then if then you got
another week. If I don't get my money, I cut

(36:15):
off another finger, and eventually we want some money.

Speaker 4 (36:17):
Lebowski, You're gonna run out a figure we want.

Speaker 1 (36:22):
Coming up next, an impossible decision in sports today. That's
next Jason of Mike Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (36:30):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific.

Speaker 1 (36:38):
I need that bobblehead of k Hernandez by next Wednesday.
I need two of them. Did you make promises to
people that you're now on the hook? I did. Man.
If I don't have those bobbleheads, man, Are're gonna find
me in the bottom of the lake. I mean, look,
I like Key k Hernandez, but you're really obsessing it.

(37:02):
I made promises, man, I made promises. I gotta you know.
If she gives them to you, I'm just gonna kick
your ass and take them right. Yeah, I think that's
gonna happen. Gonna that's gonna happen. Yeah, okay, I'm gonna
record it. It'll be on our new YouTube channs at
YouTube a slash Jason Smith show. Monty's coming in Wednesday
with the Bobbleheads, justin where will you be on Wednesday?

(37:23):
I will be in Brazil. Yeah, okay, so it could
be tough to do that. I can kick you.

Speaker 6 (37:28):
I'm gonna call him sick Wednesday. So that's awkward. That's awkward.
It's awkward.

Speaker 1 (37:33):
You know what's awkward is when the next time you
work in your car as keyed, that's gonna be awkward.

Speaker 5 (37:38):
You know, they broke into my car here, so it's
too soon.

Speaker 1 (37:41):
Yes, I didn't know that they broke into my car here.
I didn't know when did that happen?

Speaker 5 (37:46):
Like a year ago?

Speaker 1 (37:47):
Now it doesn't matter.

Speaker 6 (37:49):
I don't forget it.

Speaker 5 (37:50):
They took all my stuff, Jason, my laptop, took, goodness,
everything I did not took my my glove, my child
like a glove that it's like, you don't even need this.

Speaker 1 (38:00):
They took my glove, my first and the first Hernandez
and that was gonna give you. I did not know
that about your car. I'm sorry about that. Well, I
didn't know I was gonna get that. What you did?
You broke up a marriage, possible marriage. Yes, listen, the kid,
the kid came swooping in yesterday. What else did you do?

(38:22):
Pam was never marrying her old boyfriend. It was never
gonna happen. You've ruined a lot of things, never gonna happen.
Never broke the family up in mine? No, there was
no fam uh so. And because Pam and her boyfriend
were dating for nine years, she moved away. He didn't
move with her. She moved. She moved away the long

(38:45):
that's the sign that we're gonna break up. If if
you move away after you've been together, are we gonna
get married and you can't see for him? We're not
gonna get married. Instead, I'm moving two thousand miles away. Okay.
So let's we're not gonna go pick out play okay.
And then he went full John Cusck with a boombox
playing two thousand light Years from Home by the Stones

(39:08):
to try to win her back. I'm sorry, I'm sorry,
swooped in. I'm sorry. The kid has game. I'm sorry,
I'm sorry. I have game. My guy, I got, I got,
I got triple double. There was no home. There's an
alternate universe that list call that guy. Yeah. So, speaking

(39:28):
of names being on a list, Keegan Bradley today announced
the full twelve man United States Ryder Cup team to
face Europe this September Bethpage Black in New York. They're
gonna try to get the cup back here on on
US soil. The biggest thing about this was that he
could have chosen himself because he's eleventh in US Ryder
Cup breakings, which is easily within that margin of hey,

(39:51):
you can pick him, you can pick yourself. But he didn't.
He said, he took a couple of rookies, other players
who have really good records in the Ryder Cup previously,
and he didn't take himself even though he could have done.

Speaker 3 (40:02):
So.

Speaker 1 (40:03):
I remember when he didn't get taken the last time round.
It was a really big deal, right, Zach Johnson was
the captain. Didn't take him because he took golfers. He
said he was quote more familiar with than when we
got beat pillar to post, you know, in Europe. So
here's Keathan Bradley the chance to come back and go
yeah yeah, yeah. Instead he doesn't pick himself, and you
know what. I dig that because I don't know how

(40:24):
you're in charge of something such that's such a big deal.
Where you say I'm gonna a take on the onus
of playing in addition to captaining, which is a bit
so why you don't see player managers in Major League
Baseball anymore, but also the optic of I'm going to
pick myself when that's gonna be a daily story between
now in September. You chose yourself. You picked yourself, You

(40:46):
picked yourself, You picked yourself, picked yourself. That's a really
and if he doesn't come up big, there's a lot
of pressure. There's so many things that can come out
of this. He made the right decision, even though he
clearly could have gone. He clearly has the game to
do it. He made the right decision and not picking himself.
He could have been the first playing captain since Arnold
Palmer in nineteen sixty three. I say he's got no guts.

(41:09):
Oh boo, let's go put it on my back. Let
me lead you to greatness. I'm gonna play in every event.
Well don't you Nope? Sorry playing.

Speaker 4 (41:18):
No?

Speaker 1 (41:19):
I mean I if he was, if he was, look,
if he was Scottie Scheffler or Xander Schaffley or one
of the or Bryson d. Chambeau. I would say, okay,
then you have to play. But when you're kind of
you're definitely someone that you could have been chosen. But
it's not that crazy a deal to not be picked,
and he made the right choice. The most important thing
you're doing is cap you can find another golfer that's

(41:40):
about as good as you that you can send on
there and not open up a can of worms and
be a distracting storyline going into the Ryder Cup, because
that would be the biggest thing. Hey, you you chose
yourself to play in this, that's the only storyline there
would be. Pressure would be great. Pressure makes diamonds, makes
champions champions. Yeah no, I went. I dig that he

(42:04):
made that cart to a tuck. You know he wants
to play and he didn't and he didn't choose himself.
I think that's a I'm making up for me being
snubbed last time. My turn shooter shirt exit about a
fresc accent, swollen dumb coming up next to big NFL
suspension and a big injury. We break him down. This
is fuck
