Speaker 1 (00:29):
Greetings, Welcome in side our three, The Jason Smith Show
with my best friend Mike Harmon, live from the tire
Rack dot com studios. It is a suddenly last summer.
It is a suddenly interesting game five between the Thunder

(00:49):
and the Nuggets. One o three, one oh three. Now
make it a one oh six, one oh three lead
for the Thunder With a minute eighteen to go in
the fourth quarter. Nikola Jokic has forty four points to
go along with fifteen rebounds. Meanwhile, SGA leading the way
all five starters for the Thunder and double figures. SGA

(01:09):
with twenty six, seven assists and five rebounds. As the
Thunder say, hey, wait a minute, okay, so the Cavs
are out. The Celtics are in trouble. They're going out.
We're not gonna be that third team. We're gonna win
this series and go to the Western Conference Finals.

Speaker 3 (01:23):
Just an absolutely insane last couple of minutes back and forth.
That'sga Jokic I was telling you off air, kind of
looking at just where the lines were and everything. Coming
into the game, over underd for points, rebounds and assists
was fifty and a half. He's got forty four points
right now after a moon shot three ball that fell

(01:43):
before Jalen Williams hit his second three point shot of
the game to put the lead back to a one
oh six, one to oh three margin for OKC.

Speaker 4 (01:51):
As we come up on a minute remaining, a.

Speaker 1 (01:53):
Big miss by Jamal Murray with a minute left to go,
and it's a three for the Thunder to give them
a one oh nine, one to oh three lead with
less than thirty seconds left to go. So gonna need
some magic or the Nuggets are gonna give this one
away again. The Nuggets were gonna I don't want to
say they were in control, but for a road team

(02:14):
to come in and play as well as they did,
the uh for most of the way to kind of
just fall apart here at the end. This is something
that we haven't really seen the Nuggets do all that
often over the course of these playoffs.

Speaker 3 (02:26):
Yeah, come in with a pretty decent sized lead, and
then they went cold. There was about a three and
a half minute period where they went without a field goal,
and you saw a chip away and you look at
the balance of what the Thunder been able to put
together and Asga has got his uh and he's filling
the stat sheet as you go down now at twenty
nine points, but five starters all in double figures. Add

(02:48):
thirteen off the points, some clutch shooting early on from
Alex Caruso, and now you have a six point margin
in the final seconds.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
So I we'll keep you updated here again. Thunder lead
the Nuggets by six with thirty seconds left to time
out on the floor in the fourth quarter. If only
the Nuggets headed coach oh, well, hey, look, they wouldn't
be here. If they still had Mike Malone, they they
would have been out in the first round. They would
have been done. Meanwhile, speaking of being done, the Cleveland
Cavaliers go out tonight. They lose in five to the

(03:18):
Indiana Pacers. The Pacers overcome a nineteen point deficit to
come from behind and win Game five in Cleveland, shocking
a lot of people that had the Cavaliers going to
Look we thought going into the playoffs, hey, look at
the Cavaliers. Boy, the Cavaliers, the Celtics and the thunder
We talked about it. These three of the best teams

(03:38):
in the regular season regard the rest of the teams
are all way below them, their tiers below and here
are the Cavaliers going home. Now it's shocking, Yes it
is one hundred percent, but it's not as shocking when
you think about the team they lost to. In the NBA,

(03:58):
matchups matter more than they do in any other sport. Right.
You can be a bad matchup in a football game
and you can find a way to scheme around it
as the game goes on. You can be a bad
matchup in baseball, But then again, matchups in baseball are
really about the team's next day starting pitcher. But the
NBA the playoffs are so much about matchups, and the

(04:18):
Pacers have been a bad matchup for the Cavaliers for
a long time. The Cavaliers have not been able to
take care of the Pacers. The Pacers starting five. Look
the Knicks get a lot of credit, and they should
because they're fantastic for their starting five and what they do.
But the Pacers are kind of the same. It's very
eerily similar with the roles they have, they're starting five
and what they're able to do. Guys that are underrated,

(04:41):
whether you want to compare Burton and Brunson and Halliburton
or Anunobi and Siakam, like, it's very similar what each
of these teams can do. And when you go back
to the beginning of this year, right, this is the
other big thing. Since the calendar flipped to January, the
Pacers have a tip three record in the NBA. Like,

(05:02):
they've played extremely well since the calendar flipped to twenty
twenty five, and it's really well. The first couple months
of the year, yeah, they were kind of meandering a bit,
but wow, they have been a really good team for
a long time. And oh, by the way, this is
a team that was in the Eastern Conference Finals last
year with basically the same cast and here they are
back navigating the playoffs, navigating the physicality better than the

(05:24):
Cleveland Cavaliers did. So yeah, it's shocking to see the
sixty four win Cavaliers go home. But when you think
about losing to the Pacers, who have also been just
as good as they've been for the past four months,
and they're bad matchups for them, Yeah, it's not that
surprising the Cavaliers went out.

Speaker 3 (05:40):
Yeah, when you look at the depth, the defensive acumen,
and they weren't brilliant all. Going back to situational right,
when we talk about the Pacers, what they've been able
to do a lot like your Nicks in terms of
reliance on that starting lineup. So something's got to give
in the next round, right, Yeah, but no, not to

(06:00):
assume it away, but look at the Celtics were able
to pull it off. We're gonna have lots of different
conversations and we're gonna be really worried about you if
that comes to fruition and a Celtics pull it back.
But you know, setting up for the Pacers as they
finish up this series Cavaliers, Donovan Mitchell came back big

(06:20):
night scoring. I didn't expect to see him, so the
fact that he was in the starting lineup, came to play.

Speaker 4 (06:26):
Has himself a big game overall.

Speaker 3 (06:29):
Didn't shoot particularly well and then missed a number of
free throws in the fourth quarter.

Speaker 4 (06:33):
That really opened up the door. Darius Garland was back.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
Remember he had missed ample time as well, shot terribly
Between the two of them, what were they twelve of
forty plus.

Speaker 4 (06:42):
For the night?

Speaker 3 (06:43):
And then Max Sture's evidently he had said to his teammate, say,
if you're not ready and you don't believe, don't show
up for work. And he goes over nine.

Speaker 1 (06:52):
Yeah, it is, it was. It was a It was
a playoff that opened the door to a future for
the cavil that I'll give you a big hot take
on this is this is what we've seen now coming
off of this series. Here are the Cavaliers going home.
Are they talented enough? Yes, one hundred percent. Cavaliers are
talented enough. Are they ready enough to handle the moment

(07:13):
of the playoffs? Well, considering the fact Donovan Mitchell, who
has been terrific, still can't get out of the first round. Yeah,
the Cavaliers need something. The lights were a little bit
too bright for them. The door is wide open, right
for this hot take. Right, your radio is gonna melt.
Got my flamethrower ready, let's go. Lebron James will end
his NBA career at home with the Cleveland Cavaliers over

(07:36):
the course the next few seasons, both sides need the
other right. For Cleveland, clearly, they have enough talent. Their
rotationist is terrific, but they can't handle the moment. They
need someone to come in that can be that star
that can take the pressure off the rest of them.
Because you look at Donovan Mitchell and as good as
he was, the guy missed three free throws. He's fouled

(07:58):
to go to the line, can cut the lead to
three in the final minute, and he misses three free throws.
He's foul on a three and each one was worse
than the last. The last one missed big time off
the back rim of the back iron, and you said,
what is happening? How does a guy shooting eighty percent
from the free throw line miss all three of those?

(08:18):
The Cavaliers need someone to come in that can show
them the way, that can keep the pressure off of them,
because clearly the lights are too bright for them. Lebron
is that guy, and the Lakers they're in a point
right now where they know they are actively moving past
the Lebron era. They kept Lebron the last few years
because their future wasn't great because the Lakers have always

(08:39):
had a star. You could say, well, the Lakers have
always had a center. Remember they go from Kareem Will
to Kareem Yeah, okay, but the Lakers have always had
a superstar and if they moved on from Lebron, they
wouldn't have a superstar. So they kept him, but you know,
they need to move on from that. And they got
sick of it's Lebron and it's Ad and it's Rich
Paul and Clutch Sports and they're dictating the players they

(09:01):
want to come play here and basically co running the Lakers.
The Lakers have said enough. They swing the big trade
for Luka Doncic and they trade Anthony Davis. You can
tell Lebron is starting to get frozen out a little bit.
Lebron's on the outside where the team is now going
to be Luka Doncics driven. They're gonna go get a
big man in the off season that's gonna help run
the floor with Luca, which is what he needs. Lebron

(09:22):
has already kind of stepped back from any sort of
implication of decision making or anything of the sort. And
you know that after this year, if the Lakers don't
improve on that first round exit, Lebron is gone. He
may be gone anyway. I'd like to see the Lakers say, hey,
we're gonna do this earlier rather than later, and let's
move it. Let's trade him right now. But with a

(09:43):
fifty million dollar option due this year, Lebron is not
opting out of it, so that money's gonna go along
with whatever you trade him for. He's not gonna take
less money because you know, Lebron wants to win, but
I'm not gonna give up money to win, So just
forget about that. So this is more something where this
year plays out for the Lakers, and if it's not better,
they will move on from Lebron and be Luka Doncige driven,

(10:04):
and Lebron will go home and finish his career the
way he wants to. He started at home, he left,
he went back, he won a title, he left. This
is the way for him to end. He will have
at least a couple of years there, because he's got
at least three to four looks like really good years
left because he's not even close to the cliff. But
the Lakers are simply getting to the point where they're
done of being in the Lebron business and now they're

(10:25):
in the Luca business, and this is how they're going
to run the team. They're taking control of the team
back again. So I see this year with Lebron and
the Lakers, and then Lebron finishes with the Cats. I
would go to Vegas and say money Lebron does at
least the last two years of his career. He's in
Cleveland trying to win one more championship. Where it's told up,
maybe Bronny goes with him, Maybe it's some kind of
move where it's hey, Bronny goes back, or maybe Bronni

(10:45):
stays in La Bronny doesn't need to be a part
of it. But you can see the end of Lebron
in La coming, and the way the Cavaliers lost tonight,
knowing they would open their arms to him again because
just a kid from Akron and wants to come home.
That's how his career is gonna end.

Speaker 3 (10:59):
Yeah, now you have the curiosity right when Lebron made
a big point at the trade deadline that how he
believed in the team, so he didn't go through and
open the exploratory trade options because he does have the
no trade clause right, one of a few guys. We've
certainly talked about about it a lot, how it did
not help the Phoenix Suns and their quest to do

(11:21):
anything with that roster. I'm not waiving that. No, I
don't want to move. We're gonna ride this thing out.
With Lebron, he's also gone out of his way to
push back as much as the team maybe pushing him
out of the inner circle, he's pushing back on them
to in terms of his outward statements. Remember after they

(11:42):
were oustered ousted from the playoffs, their ouster being asked
the question about roster construction, Well, the last guy that
you know an ad, I don't you know, I don't
want to be traded, ha ha and having his laugh,
but taking his shots at Palenka and the roster construction,
the inability to get another center in to help bolster

(12:02):
the interior defense or give Luca that true lob opportunist
that did not happen to the best of their abilities.
With the young guys, Jackson Hayes suddenly found himself on
the outs. Whatever so Lebron has done has owned a distance.
What he even should do is just have a giant
ceremony saying, hey, here's I officially renounced my no trade clause.

(12:24):
Let's go let's go to work and talk about it.
Because we talked about odds of his next team. As
of May first, the Cavaliers were eighteen to one. In
terms of that homecoming situation. I just think it would
be curious to watch him with a whole new group
of guys that he can say, well, it's their fault
we didn't win, just.

Speaker 4 (12:43):
Like he did this Lakers squad.

Speaker 3 (12:44):
I mean, Luca and I did what we needed to,
but I mean, look at the rest of this roster.

Speaker 1 (12:49):
I mean, it would be something to see the Lakers
get proactive, but it would look more like a panic move.
And where we're now, we're done. It looks combative. So really,
I really think that there gonna give this year a
run and if it doesn't work, then they're gonna move on.

Speaker 3 (13:04):
Well, but again, like it's all in Lebron's hands right
between the Hey, I'll rework my deal to give us
room to do something substantively in the marketplace, because that's
why you start getting colins. Bill Plashky, old friend of
the show and network, my old colleague on Sunday Mornings
talking about Austin. Reason is why you have to do it.
It's like, well, he's got a really nice contract in

(13:27):
terms of what he brings to the table.

Speaker 4 (13:28):
Are there liability?

Speaker 3 (13:29):
Sure, he's not a great defender, all of those things
came up small in the playoffs, But what are you
bringing back really that solves all those other issues and
doesn't result in the net loss and going to Lebron
As soon as you tell lebron hey, we talk about
that trade trade thing, we do. What's he gonna do?
Ain't gonna go run into all his buddies in the media.

(13:49):
Can you can you believe it? Like now they're begging me,
They're begging me, and I've got them, you know by
the uh well yeah, in terms of what they can.

Speaker 4 (13:59):
Do with their rosters, so yeah, you might have one
more uncomfortable.

Speaker 3 (14:03):
Year with whatever they can put together. But going back
to Cleveland, yeah, it would be a great final chapter
to the storybook and bringing Bronny along the Ys to.

Speaker 1 (14:15):
The don't forget Bryce, don't fit Brian Brett. Maybe maybe
Lebron and Bronni.

Speaker 3 (14:22):
We did have someone on Twitter that said, you know,
in terms of a Lebron getting out of town thing.
That a comedy show with Justin just berating Lebron the
whole time with different scenarios and sequences over.

Speaker 4 (14:36):
The last five years. Oh No, that would be funny.

Speaker 1 (14:40):

Speaker 2 (16:47):
I hate that's all.

Speaker 1 (16:49):
It is a final in Oklahoma City, and it looks
like at least one of the three best teams in
the NBA in the regular season may actually advance out
of the second round. The Thunder take over late beat
the Nuggets one twelve to one oh five despite a
monster game from Nikola Jokic forty four points fifteen rebounds,

(17:10):
but not enough Shay Gilders Alexander goes for thirty one
hits the big three in the final minute that provides
that last bit of cushion for them. All five starters
for the Thunder in double figures tonight, and you know, look,
there's to compare them to the Cleveland Cavaliers. There's something
to be said for you know, you look at the
superstars of each team and you know Sga is probably

(17:32):
gonna win the MVP this year and Donovan Mitchell the
end of the game, right just watching them both approach
the end of this game, the end of their games
tonight and SGA was you could see how how in
controlled he was. Even when the game was tight, he
was able to hit that big three that gave him
a six point lead, where he very calmly waited for

(17:54):
the screen and found his open spot didn't have a
lot to be open, and he hits the big three.
I get it sense of calm, and I get a
sense of superstarness from SGA right that you get from
the big players in the game. I get that sense
of calm. I don't get that from Donovan Mitchell, right.
I don't get that why he and he is fantastic,
He's a terrific talent, one of the best players in

(18:16):
the NBA. But I don't get that crunch time coolness
from him that you get from the other players, right
Jason Tatum, who're gonna get to in a few minutes
with the Achilles injury, Like, I get that late crunch
time cool from him for the most part. I get
late crunch time cool from Jalen Brunson. I just don't
get it from Mitchell. I get I get a very

(18:36):
he runs hot and cold, and I can see by
the look on his face, that emotion sometimes gets the
better of him. And you know, we talked about a
little bit a few minutes ago, but you're talking about
a guy who you to to encapsulate Donovan Mitchell with this.
When they're trying to come back in the late fourth
quarter against the Pacers and it's a and it's a
nine point lead, Mitchell hits a big three to make

(18:59):
a six point game, and then he's fouled taking a three,
and he misses three free throws, and his body language
and the look on his face was awful. It was
it looked like I don't want to be here shooting
these three throws, and every free throw was worse than
the last one. But then I'm gonna come back and
I'm gonna hit a big pressure three in the corner
to make it a three point game again. But still

(19:19):
I don't get that impression from I get Mitchell is Hey,
he gets hot, and you just have to withstand his hot,
his hotness, his the times he gets hot, and then
and you can you can beat the Cavaliers. But players
like watching Sga navigate the last few minutes with how
he's done it. I get that sense of calm, that
grace under pressure. I don't get that as much from
Donovan Mitchell when you're talking about, Hey, the best players

(19:42):
in each of these teams that are moving their teams on, right.
I got that from Halliburton, right. Sometimes Haliburton is a
little bit too too cool because he lays off taking
as many shots as he should. But you got Halliburton
and Brunson and SGA and all these teams that have
that have moved on to the next round were one
game away from moving on to the next round. I
get that sense of confidence in the final minute where
I get that Mitchell is sort of like a loose

(20:03):
Kennon that's capable of great things. But is he really
gonna be that leader that's always going to take the
right shot, that's always going to be his teammates can
follow him. Or is he more of the the streaky
scorer that's going to give you moments of brilliance but
can also miss three free throws when his team needs
them the most.

Speaker 3 (20:21):
Yeah, that's the hard part is he misses four free
throws in the final Stanza missus. That three in a
row is just the most insane thing that you'll see
outside of old Shack, Mitchell Robinson and some of these
other guys. But for the game, he goes fifteen of
twenty one from the line, so he lived there early

(20:41):
on missus four.

Speaker 1 (20:42):
Late.

Speaker 4 (20:43):
He also goes four.

Speaker 3 (20:44):
Of nine from the field in the fourth quarter, including
four to three point shots, So it's there, you're riding
his best effort because you're not getting a whole hell
of a lot of support, right, I mean, just do
the math right there in terms of what they put
up for twenty nine points in the fourth as a squad,
really didn't get a whole lot of support. But to
your point, yeah, free throws, you know the clear of

(21:06):
the mechanism Billy Chappell to mix sports and bring in
Kevin Costner movies for giggles, like freek throws. He's an
eighty plus percent free throw shooter. And in those moments
in the quiet you're at home, can't take care of business.
There a lot of standing around in a subpar game
from Darius Garland. But yeah, they needed him to be

(21:28):
super superman, and in moments.

Speaker 4 (21:30):
He had it.

Speaker 3 (21:31):
But when the opportunity was there to distance things, couldn't
take advantage of it. No, and it really I mean
it's it's it's a stark difference of what turns an
all NBA caliber player and what goes into making an
all caliber NBA player and someone else who's just a

(21:53):
really really big star, right like Donovan Mitchell is a
really really big star. But he's not Brunson, He's not
he's not Halliburt, he's not Jokic like you talk about Mitchell. Okay, Well,
he's the best player on a team that had the
best offense. See okay, But there needs to be that
that that overall sense of he's the superstar we're gonna
rely on, and it and and it's gonna be the

(22:16):
guy that has the end of the game in hand.
There's the confidence of making the right play and usually
it's a big shot, but sometimes it's a big pass
or a big play defensively, whereas Mitchell, I just get
give me the ball, let me shoot, give me the ball,
let me shoot.

Speaker 1 (22:27):
I can do this. I can do this. I can
do this. And you need a little bit more sense
of common leadership and confidence at the end of games.
And I just don't. I just don't see that all
the way from Mitchell at the end. I see incredible
talent and he is incredibly tinned. I love him. The
guy's a Mets fan. I can't say that any bad
things about him, but I just don't get that that
his end of game and his his clutch is on
the same level as these other guys.

Speaker 3 (22:49):
Now, the other thing that we obviously need to discuss
is Kenny Atkinson gets his Coach of the Year award revoked,
right because you had a massive lead at home that
you squandered.

Speaker 4 (23:01):
It's a regular season award.

Speaker 3 (23:03):
Yeah, well that's what I mean. It's like, you're a
regular season coach. Who do we bring in to take
care of business in the postseason.

Speaker 4 (23:10):
I'm not Mike Malone.

Speaker 1 (23:12):
Well I think, I think. Now, I don't know that
you need to take the award away, as long as
you understand that, Okay, this really is a regular season award.

Speaker 3 (23:19):
And you have one more year because given history, you
get one year after you win Coach.

Speaker 1 (23:23):
Of the Year before you're fired. The ward that nobody
wants to win. Yeah, nobody wants to win that award. Well,
it's a really bad streaking sixty four and eighteen. You've
had good balance and again he's Mitchell was banged up
and Garland was coming back off injury. But they played
and they were available, and they played and logged heavy
minutes and they all shot terribly.

Speaker 3 (23:41):
I mean as a squad. I made an allusion to
it earlier, but you see what Struce was up and
evidently had his motivational moment. He played twenty six minutes.
He goes oh for nine from the field, zero for
six for three point range. As a squad, they shoot
thirty eight point nine percent, and that's bolstered by an
eight for twenty five performance by Donovan Mitchell. Like, that's

(24:04):
how poorly they played in an elimination game on their
home court. Operation shutdown Derek Bell's style going back since
all things nineties are.

Speaker 1 (24:14):
New again, Jason Smith Mike Harmon live from the Fox
Sports Radio student.

Speaker 4 (24:18):
Might as well bring back Albert Bell. We are crawling
the ducks Bell, Princess Bell.

Speaker 1 (24:24):
Oh, bring back sure belt.

Speaker 4 (24:26):
Nicely done.

Speaker 1 (24:27):
I like that. I like that. Who's the beast in
little town?

Speaker 4 (24:32):
Uh? Now they're mine?

Speaker 1 (24:33):
Now they're some magic this No fights like Gaston, take
cheap shots like Gaston. Uh. The other big NBA story
of the day. Look, because we've seen that the Cavaliers
go home we've seen the thunder move to within one
game of the Western Conference Finals. Uh, it's official today,
Jason Tatum surgery for a torn achilles.

Speaker 5 (24:54):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (24:55):
The surgery went well. It's not known when he is
coming back, but look, obviously he's out for this series.
He is probably out for most of next year. That's
generally how achilles work, even if it's a successful surgery,
which they say was successful, although I've never seen one
that's not been. Hey, how so and so surgery went. Ah,
it was terrible. It was really really bad. I don't
know what happened. It was just just didn't go just

(25:16):
a good just have a good day. Doctor didn't have
a good day. He missed a lot of shots, he
didn't have a couple of clamps he needed, you know,
a couple of the couple of nurses weren't right right
there with stuff that, you know. So it was just
just just very sloppy operation overall. So, yeah, it was
wasn't a great operation.

Speaker 3 (25:32):
I mean, not to be flipping about it, but there's
really only one result that makes it a bad surgery.

Speaker 4 (25:36):
Yeah, that's true. Yeah, right in.

Speaker 3 (25:37):
And of itself, in your day, like how he rehabs,
how quickly he can get back out of court, get
his normal walking stride and everything back like, that's a
whole other thing.

Speaker 1 (25:46):
We can't judge that today.

Speaker 3 (25:48):
No, Right, he got out of the operating room and
he gave a thumbs up at some point.

Speaker 4 (25:52):
Yeah, that's it. That It's the only thing we can measure.

Speaker 1 (25:54):
And it was fast, right, all of a sudden, it
went from we don't know Jason Tatum's injury too, he's
already underglf on surgery for a torn achilles. Now, this
is why we got into this a tiny bit last night,
but it really shows you where you're at right now,
especially with the results of what we've seen so far.
Right going into the playoffs. In the last fifteen to
twenty games of the regular season, once you got past

(26:15):
the trade deadline, what do we see, Yes, Cavalier Celtics
thunder three best teams in the league, all right, and
generally what happens the last twenty games of the season,
nobody really tries to play up to get into the
play in round. Their teams are just as happy about
getting in the lottery to maybe get a new superstar
as they are being in the playoffs. No one tries

(26:40):
to make a move of the deadline to try to
move up. Hey, we're we're a periphery playing team now.
But if we really, if we really make a couple
of moves and we go for it, we can maybe
get in the top six. And you never know what
could happen in the playoffs. Right, that's all that. You
never know what could happen in the playoffs. But look
at this year and it was, well, the Celtics are
better than everybody, so the Cavaliers, and so are the Thunder.

(27:02):
But now you've seen how the playoffs have gone, and
the Cavaliers are home, the Celtics are one game away
from going home two of the three best teams, and
the Thunder are getting all they can handle from the
Denver Nuggets. Right, it's going back to Denver at three
to two, and Denver can win this and continue. The
series is not anywhere near over. But if this doesn't
show you that, if you have a team that you feel, hey,

(27:23):
a couple of moves, maybe we can be a little
bit better than we expected, this is the year that
should show you that. Because every year that we don't know,
it doesn't look like it's our year. Because look at
what the teams are doing at the top of the conference.
Look at how the Cavaliers were so ill prepared for
the Pacers. Right an injury to Jason Tatum is torpedoing
the Boston Celtics. Meanwhile, it's not like they were gonna

(27:44):
win that game with him. The Knicks had already put
up a ten point lead with a couple of minutes
left to go. They were winning Game three anyway, But
now they have to navigate the rest of the series
without Jason Tatum. Like you see how fast things turn
in the NBA playoffs. The NBA playoffs are a marathon.
It's a war of attrition. Things changing, who can adapt
the physical play Everything changes in the playoffs. And yet

(28:04):
you still see teams who, hey, maybe we can make
a move, and maybe we can do now you know what,
We're just gonna sit tight and we're gonna wait for
the lottery, and if we get in the top to great,
We're not that happy about getting in the playing round
because that means we're out of the lottery. If we
don't get in the playing round, it's not the worst
thing for us. Teams just shut it down. Teams that
aren't really good. If you're not a top four team
in either conference, they just shut it down. But this

(28:26):
playoffs specifically should show you if you can get a player,
go for it, because you don't know what's gonna happen.
You know who's happening in the draw, you know what's
gonna happen with someone who gets hurt and not. Look
the Warriors look like, hey, we're gonna roll to the
Western Conference Finals. But no, no, Steph Curry gets hurt
and now hey, all of a sudden, the Timberwolves, noboy
thought was gonna get out of the first round. They're
a game away from getting to the Western Conference Finals.

(28:46):
So this should show you that just because you're not
having a great regular season, get in, do what you
can to make your team better. There's always players available.
Don't just shut it down like and half the league
shuts it down at the deadline. You can be that
big team in the playoff that wins and goes forward. Look,
if not for Curry's injury, the Warriors made the big
gutsy move for Jimmy Butler. Hey, with Steph Curry, maybe

(29:09):
the series isn't three to one, Maybe it's two two.
Maybe they're up three to one like it shows you
from all different aspects. You can make moves, you can
be good, you can win from the seventh slot. You
can go from the sixth seed to the Western Conference Finals.
It's what the Timberwolves are gonna do. It's there for everybody.
Go for it. Don't just pack it in at game
number sixty because you feel like I'm ready to be
done with the season.

Speaker 3 (29:29):
Well, we talk about attrition all the time, right every postseason,
the running joke of it being a second season because
we played three months in playoff basketball right early April
all the way into late June. At this point, by
time we're done with the NBA finals. Man, that's an
awful lot of games with seven game series and just

(29:49):
the wear and.

Speaker 4 (29:50):
Tear on bodies.

Speaker 3 (29:51):
I'm sure folks are already commissioning the study over the
last five to ten years on the effective games, the
extra minutes, the pogo stick running gun kind of NBA
on the number and preponderance of Achilles injuries. Right, we
saw that a lot. After Tatum went down yesterday. It's like, wow,
it seems like this happens a lot, So we'll see that.

(30:13):
The point I'm just trying to make is depth comes
into into sequencing right, and it starts to matter having
an extra capable body to slide in and fill up
some of the stat sheet. You're never gonna replicate that
star player, like losing is Steph Curry, but you're gonna
put yourself in a position to where all right, now
we pivot and we've got a guy that can give

(30:33):
us a little bit of what he does as a shooter,
maybe a little bit better defensively, and we have a
net positive but not making that phone call.

Speaker 4 (30:41):
Look what happened at the trade deadline.

Speaker 3 (30:43):
If you believe all the stories you're hear, all it
took was an innocuous phone call of hey, what do
you think Rob? It's Nico, how you doing? And all
of a sudden you change a bunch of fortunes. And
when we talk about these playoffs, series one twisted ankle
game missed suddenly turns this series and you have an
opportunity to go and grab it. Like the Moneies all

(31:06):
have to work out. So you're you're only gonna get
killed so much if you get rid of a generational
type of guy. And the beauty of it for GMS,
very few guys are being bestowed the no trade claws
in their contracts.

Speaker 1 (31:20):
So take your shot. You're getting fired anyway, Exit out
about to Frasca, exit Swallen dull. This playoff should show
you when it gets down it don't just quit like
half the league does. Let's find out what's trending in
the wide world of sports from a guy who I
believe just pitched the top of the ninth inning for
the Dodgers. It's Chris Purfett. He's got what's trending.

Speaker 6 (31:40):
We're pretty down deep in that, but I think you
have to go through Uh do they still have single
A affiliates for the Dodgers, So you have to go
through that first. Sure, Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, go ahead,
Yeah yeah. I might be playing for them soon, who knows. Anyway.
Let's start off with the Man in the Night Shay
Gil just Alexander.

Speaker 5 (31:54):
Hardenstein's grand Shay jumped out by Brown Kills alls that
a five to shoot hangle that fires are three.

Speaker 1 (31:59):
That's on. I got it to take a Thunderfunny Bault
thunder by Sick called Baby forty seven point bow up
thunder by six by six oh Baby Thunder Radio Network
on the call.

Speaker 6 (32:09):
There the thunder defeat the Nuggets one twelve to one
oh five in spite of a forty four point game
fifteen rebounds from Nikola Jokic. All Oklahoma City starters scored
double digit points as they took a three to two
series lead. Cleveland Cavaliers get closed out against the Indiana Pacers.
Pacers claim a one to fourteen to one oh five
victory with the Tyrese Halliburton thirty one point game.

Speaker 2 (32:30):
They await the winner of Celtics Knicks.

Speaker 6 (32:33):
Dallas Stars defeat the Winnipeg Jets take a three to
one series lead in the Stanley Cup playoffs, and the
Athletics have hit Athletics in the ninth hitting five home runs,
two of those by Jacob Wilson. And it's only a
matter of time before the Dodgers go down. Never say never,
but it is right now eleven to one. We talked
about the Tigers walk off home run earlier. The Padres

(32:56):
wanted in on that action too.

Speaker 1 (32:57):
And fordw swings hits you in the air, Hi indeed

Impression it's my.

Speaker 1 (35:00):
Anthea we've got MORE nba on the, way but today
was a landmark day In Major League baseball AND i
have not nearly run as many eight men out lines
AS i wanted to run. Tonight you have a good, Day,
gandaled not bad you. Uh Pete rose And, Shoulis Joe
jackson and some of the Other Black socks from nineteen

(35:21):
nineteen and other notorious figures Throughout Major League baseball are
now eligible for The hall Of. Fame As Commissioner Rob
manfred has reinstated them to the, game And Rob, manford
in Only Rob manfred's ways that he, can turned out
to say something so incredibly. STUPID i really can't believe

(35:45):
this went out as a press release from the commissioner
Of Major League. BASEBALL i, GO i FEEL i feel
LIKE i should expect more from the, commissioners but now
they keep me, up Especially Rob, manfred keep showing me, no, no,
NO i can just drag along the bottom like anybody.
Else as part of his statement into talking about why

(36:05):
he is Reinstating Pete rose And Shoulis Joe, jackson he
said that now that a player is person is, deceased
they no longer present a threat to the integrity of the,
game which is you, Know, Jeuleiss Joe jackson helping to
throw The World, Series Pete rose betting on. Baseball since they're,
dead they no longer represent a threat to the, game
so they are. Reinstated. NOW i understand that all he

(36:29):
had to do was, say a lifetime band concludes with someone's.
Death this is how we're gonna win a lifetime. BANDS
a lifetime band.

Speaker 3 (36:37):
Sanitized, yes it's very cut and.

Speaker 4 (36:39):
Dry the way he says, it he.

Speaker 1 (36:41):
Says the stupidest. Thing he, Says, oh, yeah you were
awful and you were a pariah and we hated. You
but now that you're, dead, ah you're. Okay like what
kind of logic is? That like logic from A Monty python.
Movie if she weighs as much as a, duck then
she's a witch burner Burn, like how do you say
as a commissioner to, say, hey you are a big
threat and we couldn't have you, around but you're dead,

(37:03):
now so it's. Okay this is whatny And i'm not
saying this is kind of, no this is exactly what
he has. Said once you are, deceased you are no
longer a threat to the integrity of the. Game how
do you say? That IF i was the families Of
Pete rose and all The White sox played THEY i
want them to Tell Rob manford stick it, now because
you don't think my family Is you didn't think my

(37:23):
grand my great, grandfather, whoever you don't think they were any? Good,
oh but now they're, dead you feel. Bad, no screw.
YOU i hope they tell them to go stick it and,
say you know, what we don't want to be considered
for The hall Of. Fame we don't want to be
considered for that anymore because you're only doing this for
some ridiculously stupid, reason and you put out a statement
that just insults, them insults, me insults my. Family how
could you, say, oh you're, dead you're not a threat.

(37:44):
Anymore so now you're. Good NOW i like.

Speaker 4 (37:46):
You, yeah that's the worst of, it, Right because.

Speaker 3 (37:49):
As we talked With john Pal morosi a little bit
earlier in the show talking about you, Know rose's, family
And i'm sure you've had some level of interest in
the descent of all of The Black sox players and
those that go into this long list for, reinstatement wanting
to get back in and a reconsideration of all of

(38:12):
these the terms of, things, right because you want your
family honored in The hall Of, fame but you would
expect a little more, class a little more tactfulness by
a guy who's running your sport to show the appreciation
for what they, did. Right you, know there's ways to
massage the all, right you did some bad things versus quote,

(38:35):
obviously a person no longer with us cannot represent a
threat to the integrity of the. Game, moreover it's hard
to conceive of a penalty that has more deterrent effect
than one that lasts the lifetime with no.

Speaker 4 (38:48):
Repriet.

Speaker 1 (38:50):
Unquote that was part Of Rob manford's statement To Jeffrey,
lankoff who was petitioning for the removal.

Speaker 4 (38:57):
From that list back in the early part Of.

Speaker 3 (38:59):
January all of that to, say you, know there's financial
reasons that you'd want your family member included in The
hall Of. Fame not that you Know Pete rose didn't
take every opportunity to market and merchandise whatever he could
in all of those signings that he would show up In,
cooperstown right everybody else had their card table adding Their

(39:20):
hall Of fame. Year, well he, couldn't but he wasn't
banned from the city. Limits so he would show up
because people respected what he did on the field and
thought he should have been, included paid their forty, bucks
fifty bucks, whatever inscription for the Hit Hit, king all
of those. Things but, YEAH i like where you're going sentiment,

(39:42):
wise of A i don't want to be honored him
to be honored this, Way but, unfortunately if you want
part of, it you got to take it with a
side Of.

Speaker 1 (39:51):
MANFORD i, mean you want to sign a MAN i
don't want to sign A. Manford you can keep it
like it's like me Ordering coleslaw. Salad i'm not even
gonna eat. It keep the side Of. Coleslaws i'm not
even gonna eat. It just keep the. Side put it
on the, plate pal keep the side Of. MANFORD i
don't Want i'm just not gonna eat. It so we
got a guy who gets mad if we don't ship,
out give it that Cole, slaw give it double to somebody.

(40:12):
Else next person Wants, coleslaw give him. Double give him
WHAT i. Ordered so it works. Out you, KNOW i
can't believe you're shocked the guy's a. Coward i'm. Not
i'm shocked that He, No i'm not shocked he's a.
Coward i'm shocked that he actually, said, oh you are a.

Speaker 7 (40:24):
Threat we couldn't have you, Around Tim Rob manfred is
what he was trying to. Say he was a threat to.
Him but now that he can't defend himself. Anymore, okay
it's by the, way here's a hunk of. Metal congratulations.
Exit how about To Prescot exit Swollen? Dome so are
either of these players getting into The hall Of?

Speaker 1 (40:39):
