🎙️ Hour 3 of The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon!

Jason and Mike kick off the hour by reacting to the Ravens' Monday night loss to the Lions, with Jason warning that head coach John Harbaugh should be worried — he might just be on the hot seat. Speaker 1 (00:29):
Greetings, welcome inside our three The Jason Smith Show with
my best friend Mike harm Mis Goo ball still spinning
marching band on the field as the second half begins,
All the band is out on the field. At University
of Maryland Global Campus, you can choose from more than
sixty five graduate online degrees and certificates, including our MBA
now with ten specializations. Classes start soon with the UMGC

(00:50):
dot Edu. That's UMGC dot Edu. So the Lions beat
the Ravens tonight, and we had an appreciation moment for
Dan CAMPOWI did appreciate you for you on your number
one quarterback pick of Caleb Williams. I said, point one
better than the fourth quarter that Jalen Hurts had because
it all happened in the fourth quarter. I know, I know,

(01:12):
I said last week, Caleb Williams. Everything I told you, buddy,
everything was gonna be fine. Dallas's defensive line is terrible,
their secondary is terrible. He'll be the number one fantasy
quarterback this week. Number one fantasy quarterback, Caleb Williams. You
know it's funny. I still do the ranking stuff, right,
fantasy pros that put up the one hundred and eighty
folks like wide receivers, tight ends. I've been terrible quarterbacks

(01:33):
and running backs. Oh, I'm your whisperer, and this week, yeah,
let's go. Let's go. Caleb Williams. I told you is good. Now,
it's not gonna be great every week, but everything is fine.
Everything is fine. He was great this week if nothing
else had backed off the Wolves for a little bit.
Yeah sure, because if he didn't perform against eber Flues
and this beleaguered.

Speaker 4 (01:56):
Uh, you just had that you could have stopped after
eber Flus.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
You just had to say, if you couldn't perform against
Debra Flus, that's kind of it. I know that I've
seen more memes about an exiled coach. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
Well you know video Clissons and montages.

Speaker 4 (02:11):
Certain cities New.

Speaker 1 (02:13):
York, Chicago love to live in the past and revisit
past mistakes because it's a fun thing to do.

Speaker 4 (02:18):
And when your teams are.

Speaker 1 (02:19):
Terrible, many years to do it too. I mean, that's
a lot of footage when your teams are terrible. Okay,
that's let's go back and live in the past where
things were absolutely better. Want to remind you about how
bad things are because that's our it's our shared bonding experience.
I got something for you to download when he's sixty
eight tracks still living in the past. A reissue of
Jet Throat Toll for the early seventies with all sorts

(02:40):
of outdo they all remastered? Now? Like, oh, that's remastered.
I gotta go buy it, new it because it's remastered. Remastered.
So they remastered that and do listenable it's reemestered.

Speaker 4 (02:52):
Oh, I gotta go get something.

Speaker 1 (02:53):
It's the same album. It sounds exactly the same, but
it's remastered. Oh yes, digitally went went back in and
put in the whistles and pops to make it sound
like it was off of Vidal. We took out the
flute because the flute didn't work. Whoa whoa, whoa last
feme last so a, uh look, appreciation one for Dan Campbell.

(03:17):
Now we get to where is not going to be
an appreciation moment. Honestly, at this point, the Ravens lose again, right,
and they give up thirty eight points to the Lions.
This is a Ravens team that has done nothing but
disappoint since the beginning of the season. Since you were
told every week, sometimes twice a week, this is the
most talented Ravens roster they've ever had, right all here,

(03:39):
then I'm going it looks a lot like the roster
from last year. No one said the roster from last
year is the most time but okay, all right, most
talented Ravens roster.

Speaker 4 (03:47):
Okay, okay, okay, great, great, great.

Speaker 1 (03:50):
So far they'd given up forty one points in a
huge loss. They beat the Browns. Okay, that's fine. Well,
you got out gained by one hundred yards in that game.
They moved the ball of actively, yeah, and then gacked
it at big moments. Now, you made plays, but it
did show and expose some of the potential problems and
the soft underbelly against better, more efficient operation. It's not

(04:11):
even a soft underbelly. You could just put your finger
right through it, like it's a cake and you just
put your finger right through the top through the fondant.

Speaker 4 (04:17):
Oh that's not a soft underbelly. I go all the
way right here.

Speaker 1 (04:19):
You get a couple more weeks, it'll be my birthday.
There will be cake. And now thirty eight points tonight
to the Lions. Okay, let's be honest at this point, right,
you want your hot take. John Harbaugh is coaching for
his job with the Ravens the rest of this season.
Now you're talking because to understand, this is how the
world works, right when you come into a season and

(04:40):
it's another year of Boy, we have the best quote.
We've got a guy that's going to the Hall of
Fame first ballot, unanimous, who is nearing the end of
the first half of his prime. I would say, Okay,
that's about where you're at. He's nearing the end of
the of the first half of his prime. Right, He's
where Mahomes and Josh Allen are. He be starting the

(05:00):
second half of his prime.

Speaker 4 (05:02):
And we watched.

Speaker 1 (05:03):
The the Chiefs remake their team for the second half
of Mahomes' prime, but they had won a couple of
Super Bowls. So Andy Reid, a go, let's go to
do this. This is a Ravens team.

Speaker 4 (05:13):
Now.

Speaker 1 (05:13):
Their defense is absolutely awful. Right we broke it down.
You heard Jason Cole talk about how bad the Ravens
defense is. It's one of the worst defenses in the league.
And and to not really have a spirited effort tonight,
to not really have any answers for anything the Lions
were trying to do, to let them run all over
you the way they did, which is wow. Okay man,
David Montgomery, Dude, I like David Montgomery. What do I

(05:34):
tell you? He doesn't need the football at all in
Detroit anymore? Give it to Jamior Gibbs. Every Gibbs, Gibbs Gibbs.
Tonight was a night where Knuckles ran over You leave
knuckles alone. Power Games still plays faster. I'm faster than
David Montgomery's.

Speaker 4 (05:50):
I'm faster than him.

Speaker 1 (05:51):
Didn't you see him go turbo once he got to
the hit the button up, right, down, right, left, right, left, right,
be a start. Okay, we're there. Yes, I needed to
clap along. This is an absolute failure for the Ravens
so far, and now next week but we've talked about this.
They get the Chiefs. One of those teams is one

(06:12):
and three, and for a season that began with again
every day it was the most talented Ravens roster, most
talented Ravens roster, most talented Ravens roster. Well, there's two
people that have been around for all the playoff failures,
Lamar Jackson and John Harbaugh. Lamar Jackson again first ballot
Hall of Famer going to he's as great as you
could be. How many times I do you hear them

(06:33):
say highest rated passer in NFL history right not just
what highest rated passer in NFL history right now? Not
to say that Jackson hasn't had his bad playoff games.
He turns, he tends to turn the football over in
big games, and that that's his big that's his big fault.
But Lamar Jackson is as talented as any quarterback that's
been in the NFL the last twenty five years. John

(06:55):
Harbaugh is the common bond in all of the years
where the Ravens have disappointed. But when you get that
close every year, when you get close every year but
no Cigar, it's really hard to say, you know what
we need a guy that can take you to there.
Only the Knicks decide, Hey, our guy is really good,
but let's fire him because because Tim's has taken us
as far as you can.

Speaker 4 (07:14):
Go, a lot harder to do that in the NFL.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
I think these guys like that. It's hard, Yes, exactly.
Look they get really far and every year and yes,
oh we're just this close. We just need a little
bit here, maybe a little bit of tweak here, a
little bit tweak here.

Speaker 4 (07:29):
That's fine.

Speaker 1 (07:30):
But if this is a backsliding year, and how backsliding
they they seem like they're backsliding like we are getting
try to get to the top of the mountain. But
like in the movie, like when here comes an avalanche
or there's some kind of oil spill or there's water,
all of a sudden, we're backslide. We can't stop the backsliding.
There's gonna need somebody who has to take responsibility for this.
The team is gonna need somebody, The fans are gonna

(07:52):
want somebody who is gonna take responsibility for a year
in which the Ravens again best roster we've ever had.
Clearly that's not the case, but it doesn't matter. Best
roster we've ever had. They disappoint this year. Can you
bring John Harball back. There's gonna need some kind of
change for the back half of Lamar Jackson's career. You're
gonna need a big time changeover in defensive personnel. You

(08:15):
need a big time changeover in offensive personnel. Derek Henry's
not gonna continue to be this guy. He keeps fumbling
in the fourth quarter. So you're gonna need new players
in a lot of places. You're gonna to say, Okay,
how do we reset for the back half of Lamar
Jackson's prime? And is John Harball the right guy for that?
This is your chance to make that change and say,
you know what, not working, we need somebody else. And

(08:37):
this is why Harbaugh is coaching for his job the
rest of this season. If he can right the ship
and the Ravens can get back into contention and they
get into the play they can still win the division.
The division is not that great, right, but they can
get back in. They can win the division, get back
to have a nice playoff run. Yeah, John Harbaugh keeps
his job, But a backsliding year where they're a five

(08:58):
hundred or a round five hundred they don't win the
Divisi somehow a really untalented Steelers team wins it, or
or something else crazy happens. Guess what, man, somebody else
is coming in to be the head coach of the
Ravens next year. This is the chick if he is
coaching for his job at this point in the season
one and two, the defense is really bad. You're staring

(09:19):
the possibility of one and three in the face. This
is really bad. And he's the guy that's gonna be
the guy that wears it if they if they don't compete,
because Lamar is the only guy you know is gonna
come back, right, of all the guys, well, it's me
the quarterback. No, Lamar is the only guy you know
what's coming back right. They paid him. He's this good,
he's great. Lamar's coming back. Agree or disagree. Lamar's the guy.
John Harbo is the guy that's gonna be the guy

(09:40):
gonna be the one that has to take responsibility for it.
And it's gonna be somebody new coaching this team next
year to be Adam Gason coaching this that's just die
a ball of hell. Every Ravens fan their hair just
went whites all at once. Yeah, I mean the eyebrow
just popped up. I'm a Herma Rocks now with that,

(10:02):
that just blew my mind. But i mean, look, Lamar's
in year eight already, like this is not hey, he's
still this is when guys were normally retiring. Okay, now
he's transit so legitimately though, like we used to celebrate,
it's like, all right, this guy's still upright and still
hasn't been broken in half. And for Lamar Jackson, some
of that is he's more judicious about when he takes

(10:22):
off and runs right. He still has that in his game.
But to the point you made about the accuracy in
the passing department and making these guys better players, you're
looking at depth a wide receiver. Andrews had a big
game tonight and you're going to be able to work offensively. Now,
Derek Henry's a concern, had a big peak one back
to back weeks. He's struggle. Okay, Cleveland's defense pretty good,

(10:44):
Detroit's pretty good defensive front. But the fumbling issue on
the football. Hold on the football, no matter who it is,
hold on of the football, Derek, that's a lot of
the football. Twice in the fourth quarter that you've done this,
and in this case, you basically put the Lions on
the doorstep. Now the defense hell, one of the few
times they held over the course of the evening to
where they had to kick a field goal in that circumstance.

(11:07):
But it's your margin for error is out the window
at this point with the way the defense goes. So
I got to imagine, or I mean, he got, he got.
He's not a first year guy anymore. So he gets
reassigned or dismissed. You'll shuffle up a linebackers coach or something.
You'll start making some cosmetic things defensively. You'll look for
the weaker teams that may be trying to offload expiring

(11:29):
contracts and guys that are that are ready to leave
EVE and they'll be free agency. You have to bring
them in as a rental. So I would suspect that's
the next part. But to your point about Harball, at
some point the honeymoon ends, right, At some point you
get past the we can live on a Super Bowl
run from many years ago. We watched it in Chicago.
People got mad at me. Lovey Smith got them to

(11:50):
a Super Bowl. Everything went right that year right, every
loose ball got scooped up by the Bears and returned
for a touchdown. Devin Hester was playing on all completely
different earth than we were all watching that year. And
then he was good, but it was he can't win
in November and December. You're not winning division games in
November and December. At some point, something's got to give.

(12:13):
You can only trade on that success. And Harbaugh's hit
that point and he's probably long in the expiration. It's
kind of like the Tomblin thing. You have the streak,
point to the streak. Harball doesn't have any streak. Did
he get point to? No? I mean he's he's the
one with all of this, because this is where it
all hits a boiling point for Ravens Nation, with the team,
with the fans, with that, this is if we have

(12:37):
a bed, if this is where we should just waltz
the division titles. Cleveland won a game this week, right,
They're probably somewhere in the offices someone's pissed that they
won the game because they not gonna get nos Meier.
It's gonna be number one pick at least half some power.
Now the Jets are gonna get him Hu We're gonna

(12:57):
hire Franklin Jella and run the whole draft, they think.

Speaker 4 (13:01):
But we're gonna Franklin Joe.

Speaker 1 (13:03):
We're gonna let him play owner for the day. Why
is this game? Is an actor? He's gonna give you
a speech at some point. And why is Dennis Leary here?
I don't know. But but you got that. You've got Cincinnati,
that Jake Browning led them to a win because Jacksonville
couldn't get out of their own way.

Speaker 4 (13:21):
Yes, you see, Jake Browning had a little bit of
trouble yesterday.

Speaker 1 (13:24):
Brian went to work trouble. And then you've got the Steelers,
who they're good enough, but are they run away and
hide and know? So the division is still yours to
just walk through. If you get some modicum of consistency
from the defensive side of the ball. And at this
point you're not seeing it again, go back and watch

(13:46):
that Cleveland game. There were a lot of opportunities left
on the field by that Brown squad. So you walk
away going, ah, they beat the hell out of them. No, no, no, no,
the tail of the tape. Don't just read about a
final score. It's not always indicative of how a game
is played. Exit out about a Fresco exit swollen down
the Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike Carmon
coaching for his job is John Harbad before Robert Sola

(14:10):
becomes the head coach of the rit You want to
talk about a guy who's starting to get his victory
laps back. I mean he's got a little extra spring
in his step as he's run over the stairs a
little bit, little bit, little bit.

Speaker 4 (14:20):
Yeah, I think they're an overrated three and oh, but
still three and oh is three and oh.

Speaker 1 (14:23):
Well, now you have to try to figure out how
to generate a pass.

Speaker 3 (14:27):
Away.

Speaker 1 (14:27):
But he's just the defensive coordinator, so it's okay, he's
not the head coach, but that's where he excels. Man, Yeah,
that's good. He does that boast anymore. I'll tell you, man,
next year, I'm telling that John Harbaugh's gone. And they
call the Chargers to get Jim Harbaugh to come in,
and Jim says, yeah.

Speaker 4 (14:42):
Blank, you bro im going to take.

Speaker 1 (14:44):
Care of But think about the juice in the room.
If you bring him back to the Jets, he's running stairs,
Glenn's dancing on the sideline. Come on now with Jim Harbaugh. Okay,
say Jim Harbor, great year with the Chargers this year, right,
Say he wins the Super Bowl with the Chargers and
the Ravens obliged to go back to college. No, no, no,
and the Ravens call him and say, we want you
to take your brother's place here. I think he would

(15:06):
go in a second just to be able to do that,
because he would have it over his brother. Yeah, oh absolutely, no.
You got me in the super Bowl, but they fired
you to bring me in game set man, that would
be the best. Here, we have a special Harbaugh Christmas

You know Globetrotter's. Right.

Speaker 1 (18:25):
When I was ten, I was gonna go see the
Globe Trotter's Madison Square Garden. I was so excited, right,
I was so excited. I was gonna go with my
friend next door everything, go see the globe. Oh my god,
it's so great, so great. Of course, Friday, the day
before I get strep throat. Oh no, and I can't go.
And my friends, oh my god, it was amazing. You're
right near where Curly Neil did the confetti and the water.

(18:47):
I'm going never never went, that's never gone to see him.
I missed Geese Osby and I missed. I missed everything.
I was looking forward to early Neil like a month
and a half. Saw. Oh, those guys were like a
month and a half. I was looking forward to it.
I got strep throat the night before. Mom says, you
can't call me. I always saw him. I was trying
to put it on a timeline and snap it to

(19:07):
a grid like that the Bozo Show, all those things
you did in Chicago. But uh, strep.

Speaker 4 (19:13):
Throat you down?

Speaker 1 (19:14):
Yeah, yeah, yeah. There are big moments in my life
where I got sick because that not something Knockwood never
really got sick that much when I was when I
was a kid, but big moments where I got sick
and laid low and I couldn't like I had literally
legitimate strep throat, Like I couldn't go. I remember feeling
so awful. The senior faculty basketball game high school. Okay,

(19:34):
the day when when the when the the students play
the teachers in the game. The teachers are always really
a couple of teachers were really good, right, like they
were like, hey, we love you, but in this in
the basketball game, we're gonna kick your ass. And I
was decided because I was because you know, and the
thing is the players on the basketball team couldn't play,

(19:55):
so it was the student by so it's all you
have to worry about. And I was going to start
a point guard right like I'm I'm like, I'm so
excited right that the game is the next day. I'm like, wowsa.
Some tells me you're not an assists man though. Oh no, No,
I was a good point guard. I made good decisions
with the ball. I was a good point guard. And
I was gonna start a polling I'm like, oh no,
this is exciting. Like I'm thinking all the people that
don't know me that they're gonna say, wow, this guy Aya.

(20:15):
I couldn't wait again something whatever it was, I don't
know what. It was, like one hundred and two degree fever.
I was just out of it, sucking up a couple,
let's go to school. They were like, what happened? I've
been looking forward to that game for the whole year,
Like I was looking forward and I couldn't make it.
We lost, and everything. I was like, I was so bubble.
It's one of the gives a big speech. You were
supposed to make it a debate class too. While you're

(20:35):
at it, we played psychologically. I just got into a
space and I made myself sick. We played these teachers
nine ten times. They might beat us nine but not today.
This is our time. I was but I couldn't. Like Russell,
I'm like, but I remember, I couldn't even get out
of bed, and I'm like, how did I get sick
for this? I was so looking forward for so long.

(20:57):
It's like I can't wait. And I saw some of
the people that got to play in the game because
like things were going bad. I'm like, this kid, guy,
he's dead. He's definitely even how wah. I was so mad.
I saw him eating paste on Monday. My friend, my
best friend called me after the game. You're coming right,
You're coming right. I remember talking to him phone and go,
I can't I got a fever.

Speaker 4 (21:18):
I'm I didn't.

Speaker 1 (21:19):
I'm I didn't even going on the World series that
was eighty seven eighty actually maybe could have been. But yeah,
a couple of moments where that happened in my life.

Speaker 4 (21:28):
I just got sick and I couldn't. I couldn't make it.

Speaker 1 (21:30):
That's awful. There's your chance to shake things, man, big
kid could have had moments. I had this vision of
I was going to be in the middle of the
game and the coach, the high school coach be to go,
why did you come out from my team?

Speaker 4 (21:40):
Look for the last four years?

Speaker 1 (21:42):
I don't know.

Speaker 4 (21:43):
I'm throwing alley oops up and I was so excited.

Speaker 1 (21:45):
Going to hide the back swinging passes to the baseline.

Speaker 4 (21:49):
That was so excited to play, and I.

Speaker 1 (21:51):
Thread the need don't go into the old Iowa bounce
play pass like you were just settles.

Speaker 4 (21:56):
Hide the ball under my under my, under my shirt.

Speaker 1 (22:00):
Unfetti bucket. In the whole nine yards. I had vision
me coming down he spin at the ball on his finger,
hitting the three or some kind of wheel pass, and
then coming back down to the coach going why didn't
you play for me for the last couple of where
have you been?

Speaker 3 (22:13):
Like?

Speaker 1 (22:14):
I was a vision to look at his field vision
out there?

Speaker 3 (22:17):
Man.

Speaker 1 (22:17):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (22:17):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (22:18):
In my years of playing cornerback expertly, so I learned
how to read a defense like and an offense like
no other.

Speaker 4 (22:25):
Never meant to be, never meant to be.

Speaker 1 (22:27):
That's tough, man, Oh yeah, that was tough. Hey, buddy,
I was a good point guard. I was a good
point guard. I didn't The thing is I didn't. I
never pushed my shot. I never was one of those
he checked. I was like, okay, set up the offense.
I would take all my shots within the within the
framework of the offense, and it was always worked out great.
Like team I played, we were really good, and I
was like, God, I knew, knew what I was doing.
Every I got it, I got I was always look

(22:48):
not for nothing. But I was always the smartest guy
in the field, whatever sport we played, even in football
when I wasn't as good as anybody else, I'm like,
why are we not taking that penalty? No, take the penalty?
Why are we not taking that penalty? It would make
Why why are we declining the bet? Like all those things?
And I remember my mom telling me, why aren't you
the one out there making those decisions? I got well
because I'm not on the field, Like when I'm a

(23:10):
freshman's I'm not on the field.

Speaker 4 (23:11):
I'm not playing, But.

Speaker 1 (23:12):
You should go out there. You know the game better
than I go.

Speaker 4 (23:14):
Yeah, but I'm not.

Speaker 1 (23:15):
It's really they don't do that, Mom, It's not how
it works. Being being smart only work to get a
coaching job with the min Miami Dolphins. It will not
work in getting me on the field actually playing, because
eventually I still have to be you know, good and
worked in inner murals. It worked in softball, worked when
I was a coach, It worked on when I played hockey.

Speaker 4 (23:34):
It worked out, but it didn't. It didn't work. Their
football didn't work. Yeah, okay, let's let's take that penalty.
Why are we declining it?

Speaker 1 (23:40):
Oh, it still makes it. No, they're gonna they're gonna
go for it if you make it for it. Never mind,
never mind. Okay, there we go, and they went for
it and got it right. Okay, great, fourth and two
they're going for it. Of course they're going for it.
It's fourth and two on our forty yard line. They're
gonna punt. They got to in high school. The punter
calling a punt is twelve yards. Of course they're gonna
go for it on fourth. Oh, they got it on Worth.
Could have gotten a coffin corner punt. My favorite play

(24:03):
now when my kids playing soccer, they clear the zone,
it's like, hey, what'd you do? It's like, yep, it's
down inside the three. Lets go. They gotta drive passes
the entire way. Oh, hey, here insane. I'm like, yes,
I am, hey speaking of because I told you before
that that John Morton, the o C of the of
the Lions. Well, by the way, maybe a pretty good
offense had not to be confused with Johnny Moore, not

(24:24):
that job who also played for the Lions. I told
you I coached how that works. I coached his kid
in softball a couple of years ago. And it's now
I'm like, now, okay, Like I'm like, hey, I feel
like I haven't ever been banned yet. No, no, no, I
feel like I have a proprietary like like like I
get a ring. Oh I should? I should? I mean
I I I didn't coach her for very long, coach
for a couple of months. She's a really good player.

(24:45):
Were you instrumental in her development as a player, Oh,
I think mentality and mental approach to the game as
an outfielder. Yes, as an outfielder, she could hit. Did
she come in talking about biting knee catch No? No, no,
she'd like you addressed team, listen, listen, We're gonna get
every inch. No, we're gonna bite kneecaps. She was a
really good player, and and uh, and I really and

(25:07):
now she's graduated, and I lost touch with him because
now he went to Detroit. Obviously, send him a letter.
But the thing is I never met him. I would
talk to I talked to her mom all the time.
Was who I talked to. And when we talked about it,
when I said I said you're I said, wait, your
husband's John Morton, who coach of the Jets.

Speaker 4 (25:25):
And she goes yeah.

Speaker 1 (25:25):
I said wow, and she goes yeah. I was like, oh,
all right, like a little bit of corus. We didn't
really bring up the Jets that off and I was like, yeah, okay,
I won't bring up the Jets, but now you can
write him and say it's good to see you've graduated
to better things than the Jets. Oh man. I was like, yeah, okay, no,
I'm a big Jet fan. I won't bring up the Jets,

(25:47):
though it's all good. I will bring up I might
write the letter and just have you sign yeah the jet.

Speaker 4 (25:51):
Yeah, just absolute.

Speaker 1 (25:56):
And you had a muskrat dinner? Oh man? Do you
know where the best White Castle is up? So maybe
in Detroit? Maybe they're okay. I'm just I'm just saying
maybe this offense is okay. I mean the week one
against the Packers seems like it was a year and
a half ago. Sometimes you gotta get out there see
it for real before you adjust. And clearly the last
couple of weeks, this Detroit Lions offense is adjusted to

(26:17):
what they that did they put up week one. Well,
and we're still looking at the Packers now going well, yeah,
after three weeks, how many teams do you feel real
confident about? Hey, the Packers? It No, no, no, no, maybe
not maybe not Placo now look specio flaco legend. Speaking
of Week three in the NFL, this has been the week,
and we get back to the Ravens and the Lions

(26:38):
in a few minutes. Uh, this is the week of
the blockfield goal. Right. We had great theatrics and great
heroics with game winning field goals, but we also saw
blockfield goals turn into potential game changing plays. The Jets
blockfield goal that almost won the game for them, The
Eagles blockfield goal that wound up clinching the game that
ran it back for touching even though following the football,

(26:59):
all right, fine, that's fine, Eagles minus three and a half.
You want to talk about a play that'll be fall
on the ball, fall on the buck. No. Now, the
first thing people are going to say, well, it's an anomaly.
We're not going to see that as much over the
course of the rest of the season in the NFL,
and I completely disagree, because we're now going to see

(27:21):
more big field goal blocks, more plays like this where
teams are taking chances on special teams blocking field goals
because teams now they have no choice. Right, I've said
it for the last couple of years. This is the
best field goal kicking display the last few years in
the NFL we've seen in the history of the game.
Guys can now kick it more accurately from longer distances

(27:43):
than they ever had before. And that's not gonna stop.
We're not going to go back to an era of
bad field goal kicking, right, We're not going to do
that where you had a really good season and feel like,
if you were fourteen out of twenty three, how you
keep your job? No, fourteen twenty three. You don't make
it that long, you lose your job. The first couple
weeks of the NFL, we saw guys kick fifty five
sixty yard game winning fields right the Boswell field goal

(28:04):
Week one at MetLife Stadium, where Historically, it's really tough
to kick field goals. He kicked that from sixty It
looked like it would have been good. From seventy. We
had a seventy yard field goal in the preseason. Guys
are now making field goals from fifty five and sixty
yards like they used to make him from forty yards. Right,
Anything from fifty yards and in now is nearly automatic,

(28:26):
and we get them most of the time. Now fifty
five sixty yards, right, guys can do that. So, especially
since the way the season started out, you're gonna see
teams take more chances field goal wise, because the old
adage had always been, Hey, don't get a penalty, don't
let him give him a don't get an offside penalty,
give them five more yards on the field goal. Go
out there, you know, get your hands up and hey,

(28:49):
but don't give it to them. And now teams can't
do that anymore because guys are gonna make the field goals. Look,
you saw Jalen Carter talk about it after the win
against the Rams yesterday. Hey, of teams go out there,
get up, put your hands up, and it's just a play.
But we go out there knowing it can be a
game changing play, and they went in and blocked two
field He blocked the first one, you know, for the

(29:11):
for the Eagles too, So you know that teams have
now taking that as a strategy of we have to
go after the kicker. We have to be aggressive on
these plays and if we risk a penalty, we risk
a penalty. Right. The Will McDonald field goal block for
the Jets clearly looked like they could have called a
leaping penalty like they did a week ago, but they didn't,
and for the Jets it was worth it. Why he

(29:32):
blocked the field goal, ran it back for a touchdown.
The Jets nearly won the game, but nearly because it's
the Jets. So yeah, okay, it's worth it at that
point to have a risky play because that was a
play where the Bucks could have gone up by two
scores and won the game instead. The Jets were hey,
being that going after that play was risky, but we
had to do it right, same thing with the Eagles
and the Rams. Right, it's a longish field goal, but

(29:53):
we have to go after it and block it because
if not, we're going to lose the game. So now
teams are understanding that we need to do this and
the kicks come in lower. Hey, we have a better
chance of doing it now. So you are going to
see teams follow this this this strategy for the rest
of this year and onward because they know the kickers
aren't gonna get worse. Yeah, you're gonna get guys at

(30:13):
miss and they're gonna lose their jobs and someone else
is gonna come in. We know that we have to
be able to make plays on these possessions, and it's
worth it to risk it, to be a little more risky,
to either risk and off sides risk, a leaping penalty, risk,
whatever it is, because it's too important to play for
us to try to sit back on. You're gonna see
it mainly at the end of games, but you're also
going to see it during games when hey, are we

(30:35):
gonna do this here? Hey, this is a shorter figure.
We have a feeling they're not in the right hash mark,
or we know where this guy has trouble, you know,
on this part of the field. Let's go for it
on this play. So you're gonna see teams doing that
way more often. Now we're gonna get more field goal blocks,
more big game changing plays on the field goal block.
This was not an anomaly. This is now a correction
that teams have made.

Speaker 4 (30:56):
We're going to see for the rest of the time.

Speaker 1 (30:57):
I think some of it becomes an extension of what
we talk talked about the last couple of weeks and
the narrative that won't die about the tush push in
terms of how it's adjudicated, how much the review booth
has to get involved, and how we're going through the
points of emphasis in these types of play, right leaping, leverage,
all of those kind of things. It's all a matter

(31:18):
of who sees what and decides if it's egregious enough
to throw a flag. If in the interim you're getting
enough of a pressure and a release that the kicker
is now just a percentage off in terms of his
rhythm and continuity and pushes the ball left or right.
We all it's a win. You don't actually need to

(31:39):
physically block the football. It's all about throwing off the
timing of the snap, the whole etc. So, yeah, you're
gonna push it. Last year you had very few incidences
between field goal blocks and punt blocks over the course
of the year, so I would expect we see more
of it you get the penalty and so be it.

(32:01):
But when you don't, you get these big plays and
game changers. I mean, I also want to ask the
question of Jalen Carter. He was wearing Jared Versus chain
after the game, so it's a question of whether he
want to bet with him over the outcome of the
game change worth over one hundred thousand dollars for what
it's worth. Yeah, No, it's it's it's good for that block. Yeah.

(32:21):
Also he walks away with the chain. Yeah. And they
also had game checks on the line that has not
been corroborated, and I'm getting the chain to but yeah,
he might have taken his dog, don't. I don't know.
But all of that to say, it's it's a play that, look,
we're always looking for how do you amt things up?
Where do you get more excitement? You saw what they

(32:43):
did with even the point after touchdown right where you
change where you're kicking it from. Did it change the
percentage a huge amount? No? But now it's actually a
play that you still have to execute. Versus was what
nine percent for a number of years, So here the
same thing. Officials on their toes to decide, you know,
where's the line in the sand? Exit out about a

(33:05):

Speaker 6 (33:19):
In the top of the tenth inning, the Milwaukee Brewers
have just scored the go ahead run, up four to
three at San Diego. The Padres need a win to
clinch a playoff berth tonight. The Brewers already clinched the
NL Central title yesterday. The regular season in MLB ends
this Sunday. Padres are three games back in the first
place Dodgers in the NL West, Giants have lost eight

(33:41):
of ten. They lost at home six to five to
Saint Louis. Those two teams have the same record now
seventy seven and eighty. They're each three and a half
out of the final NL wildcard. The Reds are idle tonight,
but they've won five straight. They now own the last
NL wildcard because they have the tiebreaker over the Mets Atlanta.
For what it's worth, when it's ninth straight game, Aim
eleven to five over Washington. The Monday night football affair

(34:03):
went to Detroit at Baltimore thirty eight thirty two touchdown
runs each for Jamiir Gibbs and David Montgomery. Montgomery on
twelve carries had one hundred and fifty one yards rushing.
The Lions had a ninety six yard TD drive and
a ninety eight yard TD drive tonight. That last one
lasted almost eleven minutes. Detroit on fourth down conversions went

(34:24):
three for three forty nine ers. Edge rusher Nick Bosa
is out for the year with a torn acl Dallas
wide receiver CD Lamb could miss a month with an
ankle injury. Cowboys first round guard Tyler Booker will miss
at least four weeks with.

Speaker 4 (34:37):
A high ankle sprain.

Speaker 6 (34:38):
Running Back James Connor of the Cardinals is out for
the season. He'll have foot surgery. Arizona wide receivers A
Jones has a concussion. Arizona plays Thursday hosting Seattle. Vikings
quarterback JJ McCarthy will be out again this week due
to his ankle injury. Minnesota will be in Dublin against
Pittsburgh this Sunday morning, our time. The suspension of Minnesota
wide receiver Jordan Addison official ended today. Washington quarterback Jayden

(35:02):
Daniels is still day to day, according to the team,
due to his knee injury. The Giants have not announced
to starting QB for Sunday against the Chargers. Atlanta parted
ways with wide receivers coach Ike Killiard. Tampa baysed Star
wars Killiard's fault. It's all I Killiards. That will solve everything. Absolutely,
that will solve the There's got not gonna be another
pick six for the rest of the seion.

Speaker 4 (35:23):
No will now be good.

Speaker 6 (35:25):
Absolutely, Star wide receiver Mike Evans and the Bucks will
have an MRI tomorrow on his injured hamstring. Auburn basketball
coach Bruce Pearl retired. His son Stephen was promoted to
head coach. Duke women's coach Carol.

Speaker 1 (35:37):

the new head coach. Should have seen that one coming.

Speaker 6 (35:46):

Jason Smith Mike Harmon, live from the Fox Sports Radio studios.
We have more in the Ravens than the Lions coming up.
But straight ahead, one team, and you know who I'm
talking about. They're just gonna be bad this year. It's
gonna be great for the majority of us, but they're
just gonna be bad. There's no exit ramp. They're just
gonna be bet cowboys. They're just got to be bad.

(36:30):
Oh no, we knew that coming up. Oh that's yeah,
that was coming up. That's next right here, Jason to Mike,
Fox Sports Radio.

(37:04):
on the Ravens and the Lions coming up in a
few minutes. But because I have a sunnyside for the Ravens,
not so much the team we're gonna talk about now. Okay,
keep on the sunny side, always on the sunny, sunny
side of the street. And I watched that that Walking
Dead episode over and over again. I thought that was
so cool. We're gonna plead this song a thousand times.

(37:25):
The Cowboys are just gonna suck. Okay, there's no exit
ramp for this conversation. There's no but what if they
they're just going to be bad? This defense is terrible.
They were lucky to escape the Giants. Russell Wilson goes
for four point fifty. I kept my job for another
couple of weeks thanks to that game against the Cowboys.

(37:46):
And the Cowboys needed a sixty four yard field goal
just to force overtime. They should be zero to three.
Their defense is atrocious. Like I give Cayleb Williams a
lot of credit. We'll talk about him next hour in
about a half hour, big stuff, Kayleb Wood.

Speaker 4 (37:59):
Why like him?

Speaker 1 (37:59):
Going forward to my big fantasy game. True, but Dallas's
defense is a business. Secondary's bad. You saw Travon Diggs
get sunned by by Roma Dunday several times all of
a sudden, like the little hand fighting, and he just
shoved him off like he wasn't there. There's no riding

(38:20):
to the rescue. The Cowboys gave away their best defensive player,
uh for two draft picks that are not going to
help him for another couple of years. They're stopping the
run that likely are going to be late in the
first round for a guy who's just a guy at
defensive tackle. And now we got to realize, oh, got
to stop the past too, So that was one thing.
Got to stop the run. Real didn't stop the run.
Got to stop the past. Even didn't tell me that,

(38:42):
so uh, now we got to work on that. It's
just a bad team. Their offense is exciting and they'll
score some points as we see, but not nearly enough.
And this is a season where you can just see
the players unplugging as the weeks go on, right already,
ceedee Lamb could be I want to injured reserve, which
would be another WHI would be four weeks away, and hey,

(39:04):
good luck trying to stay up right there and put
points on the board that by week eight, I cringe
at what this Cowboys season is gonna wind up. By
the way, the operational malfeasance of giving him a carry.
Javonte Williams has been good, Miles Sanders has been good
as his backup. You've been running the ball effectively. No, no, no,

(39:25):
let's use CD Lamb and create potential chaos where his
legs get pulled underneath him. Why not? Now he's going
on at least a month there, They just if you're lucky,
And look, George Pickens had had a couple of big plays,
and he's a guy you need to get involved. You
saw Jake Ferguson, you paid him this offseason, huge target

(39:46):
total through three games, he was a wrecking crew over
the middle. One of Dak's interceptions was a drop pass
right off the hands, and the others a red zone
pick that over. Betters are still mad at him about.
But all of that that's saying you're you're not winning
games the thirty eight, thirty one, thirty one, thirty four,
whatever you're You're not Joe Burrow. You don't have those

(40:08):
wide receivers, you don't have that offense that was put together. Uh,
your offensive line is about as good as the one
he was playing. Just think about by mid season, when
the losses mount and the lack of being competitive mounts,
what it's gonna be like for the Cowboys every week
on and off the field. Jerry Jones, I know he's

(40:28):
gonna curse doing his radio hits every twoesa at one
of four to three the fan you blankety blank blank
you blank you black st I'm not gonna say. I
can't wait till the show up. Yeah, it's gonna be absolutely,
I really it's hey. For us, it's gonna be great. Right,
it's gonna be a cut. But you can imagine what's
gonna be for the Cowboys, for Dak Prescott, for Brian Schottenheimer,

(40:48):
for Jerry who is not gonna take any responsibility for
what he's done to the team. You know, he's the
one that couldn't get Micah Parson signed. He's the one
that trade him away and got two draft picks late
in the first round.

Speaker 4 (40:58):
Like, can you imagine?

Speaker 1 (40:59):
I mean, it's gonna it's just a disaster coming for
the Cowboys. Sunday Night football this week against Green Bay.
Oh man, no video tribute to Mike can you can?
I mean that? I mean luckily we have that Sunday
night because don't mention. Just say we have football on Monday.
Just say we have another Monday night. We have Monday
Night football. It's a doubleheader. Man, don't say the teams.
The teams don't matter. We have games for us to

(41:20):
break down with you and all of the globe. There
are there are two games next Monday. Yes, don't you
need to say the games. It's fine, Thank goodness. We
have Cowboys and Packers next Sunday. You couldn't pick a
worse foursome. This is like going out to a golf
I'm gonna take that guy. I think three out of
the four.

Speaker 4 (41:40):
I don't think you could pick worse.

Speaker 1 (41:41):
Then, yeah you could the one.

Speaker 4 (41:43):
You could pick a little worse.

Speaker 1 (41:45):
It could be a little bit, but I'm still not good.

Speaker 4 (41:47):
But just say there's game. There's football next Monday.

Speaker 1 (41:50):
Right, you enjoy today? You enjoyed today, enjoy next Sunday night.
There's football on Monday. That's all you need to celebrate
them all. But I'll tell you it's gonna be an
absolute disa and next week is going to be the
beginning of that of that Land Jet Cowboys. Look, we
six the Panthers. Those are actually two maybe winnable games,
maybe the sunny side of the street for the Ravens.

(42:12):
And what to know about the Lions that they need
credit for they haven't gotten until this point. Fox
