The Jason Smith Show with My best friend Mike Harmon.
Who Flirt Again? Is your National champions Basketball? School Basketball School?
Basket can show?
Speaker 3 (00:46):
Now we're thinking about Mike Miller, Joe Keip.
Speaker 4 (00:49):
Noah, keep going on down the line, crazy crazy train,
no question about no.
Speaker 1 (00:57):
I gotta think the happiest guy right now is Billion Apier. Hey,
no one's gonna ask me for anything for a while.
I could lose some games. It's okay, what did we
just see with Flora's last second escape with one of
the worst final possessions you will ever see in a
championship game. We're gonna hear from Kelvin Sampson coming up
(01:18):
in about twenty minutes.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
He's starting to meet the media now.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
Maybe he can explain what the hell that was all about,
but right now to help us explain everything else. His
website is college Footballnews dot com. He has spent the
last month plus breaking down, previewing, analyzing every single game
in the NCAA Tournament College Sports, college football, college basketball.
(01:43):
Maven It is longtime friend of the show Pete fu
Tech Pete, what's happening?
Speaker 3 (01:48):
Man?
Speaker 5 (01:49):
I'm good because I did it. I got to the
mute button just in time to avoid any aspect of
One Shining Moment.
Speaker 3 (01:57):
Oh no, I am.
Speaker 5 (02:00):
Have you ever read the lyrics to that song? Yeah,
if you're inspired by that, I cannot. It's up there
with Go Cubs Go, and This City is the dopiest
song ever. Actually tweeted that once and the guy tweeted
me tweeted back, we were a sad face, like, oh man,
I made the one shining moment guys, fan, No, I
(02:22):
felt that about but like it's so bad and it
just makes my heart sad just to listen to that.
So I missed it. And after such a great tournament,
after a great Final four and whatever that was at
the end of the National Championship, I just couldn't. But look,
is that that stinks. I mean, I had no skin
in the game whatsoever. But man, if that's your team,
(02:44):
if you're a Houston Cougar fan, that's that's good. That's
gonna take a little while. That's gonna leave a mark.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
I mean, I I don't know what you're trying to
do on that final play. I don't know if it's
a screen, but you had four players within you know,
eight feet of the ball. But you know it comes
down to this for me, Pete, is that because it's
such a defensive game when you have not made shots
with any sort of confidence or any sort of consistency, Yeah,
(03:10):
you're gonna get a bad possession like that at the
end of the game. I'd much rather be the defensive
team and a defensive game turn trying to defend the
last twenty seconds than what we saw from Houston, because
that was just awful.
Speaker 5 (03:22):
Well, there's so many parts of this. First of all,
Houston actually led the nation in three point shooting to
three point three percentage. Didn't take them, but they made
them when they take them, just not tonight if that's
national title Jenners. But the problem is also is all
game long, they wanted nothing to do with driving to
the basket and if you don't, they weren't going to
(03:44):
challenge those bigs at all. But that's they're a great
free throw shooting team. To your point, use your quickness
against those big guys on the outside, try to get
to the rim and maybe a draw, foul, maybe something.
But they're look, they set up to go for the
win and to not even get it off that just
I mean even more than that, I mean, go dial
(04:05):
it back. But if that is one of those games,
and that's one of those teams where if you're Houston
and you say, hey, you know, you're having a twelve
point lead. If you're Houston, that's like fifty for anyone else.
I mean, they should have been able to close that
out of twelve, and they just couldn't do it.
Speaker 4 (04:20):
It's kind of funny considering where they came from off
Saturday night.
Speaker 5 (04:23):
Huh, yeah, it's a it's a I don't know, it
would have been more. I mean, it was a blast
of a game. I mean it's hard to, you know,
really fault Houston. They had a shot to win the
game of the final second, but it would have been
a little more fun if that was Duke and Cooper
Flag out there and those guys, but a little more
star power. But god, Houston was just a fun team
(04:45):
to watch. But that's that's just a rough one. And
that's that's that's a tough one to get over.
Speaker 3 (04:51):
You know.
Speaker 1 (04:51):
I gotta say Pete the one guy that I was
probably the happiest we well, outside of BILLI Napier, because
now he doesn't worry about getting any criticism for while
because you know they're a basketball school.
Speaker 3 (05:02):
Uh is uh, clearly you are. You're a basketball.
Speaker 5 (05:05):
If you know Florida fans at all, deep down, if
you hooked him up to a lie detector, he said,
would you like an extra first down in the fourth
quarter of a tight game or a national championship in basketball?
They like the basketball team's shute and all. But yeah,
(05:26):
it's not a basketball no way.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
I think it might.
Speaker 1 (05:28):
I think maybe they'll pick basketball if it's against Vanderbilt,
if it's against Florida State, they might pick the first.
Speaker 5 (05:34):
Down, like you know what, the way they've been playing,
they'll take it against Vanderbilt too.
Speaker 1 (05:40):
But I'll tell you what for for Clayton to have
that bad a game, right, no points in the first half,
he doesn't score until midway through the second half for
him to make the game winning play by altering that shot,
and and and and having it get to the point
where Sharp had to just drop the basketball. That that
that's like, you know that, that's the adage of win
(06:00):
make plays in every circumstance. And he's having a horrendous game.
He's having a game where if they lose, it's gonna
be dude, it's your fault. I don't know how you
walk around on campus. And he turns out to make
the biggest play by defensively getting out there, leaping out
of the ball and forcing that play, and that's why
they won. I can't talk, can't tale happy on that
he's able to make that game winning play, which shows
(06:20):
you great players find different ways.
Speaker 3 (06:22):
To do that.
Speaker 5 (06:23):
Yeah, it was one of my exers I threw out
there and like this national championship doesn't officially start until
he hits his first shot, and he finally did with
eight minutes to go, and then hits the ex He
hits the nice image football ball. They hit the extra point,
you are hit point. Yeah, sure, hits the free throw.
So he makes his first basket with like seven fifty
(06:46):
seven to go ties at forty eight National Championship starts.
Now let's dross, let's play some cards like let's go
uh So it was that's what of good? But you're right,
but he did not hit his shots. I mean because
obviously Houston's game plan entirely to shut him down, but
that dude was early on they also figured something else
out that you know, get down to the those bigs
(07:08):
down the floor faster and get it to him and
let them dunk it. And they did that early and
so I don't know what his assist total was. I
think it was something that he had to be like
at least nine or so. But like he's just passing
the ball pretty well. Overcome his bad shooting day early on.
Speaker 3 (07:22):
Jason Smith Show with Mike Carmen.
Speaker 4 (07:23):
Here in the Tyrax studios, we've got Pete Futech with
US College Footballnews dot Com at Pete few Tech where
you find him h the Grand puba there publisher, and
he'll have all sorts of right up of this game
the end of tournament and start projecting ahead. I'm sure
he's got some Week one previews that are already in
the hopper ut time.
Speaker 5 (07:43):
I'm ready actually I'm ready. I'm ready for my day job.
I'm ready for draft, and then that, Yeah, you're right.
Now it's it's college football time again. Now we're done
with this little sport. Now we can go onto the
revenue proof.
Speaker 4 (07:57):
Yeah, we'll start projecting out the first round mock drafts
and everything here in short order.
Speaker 3 (08:02):
Now, I do want to say this.
Speaker 1 (08:03):
For Pete futeh Okay, I do want to say this
because he's not going to say.
Speaker 3 (08:06):
It, so I will.
Speaker 1 (08:07):
In his breakdown of this game, again, Pete picked and
broke down every single one of the NCAA tournament games. Quote,
this is a quote for picking this game. No one
brings the fight like Houston, but Florida isn't all that
far off. The Gators will come through over the last
two minutes where the Blue Devils failed. Now, unless you
went and just did that now and didn't edit, that's
(08:29):
a pretty good pregame prognostication, Pete.
Speaker 5 (08:33):
Well you actually with the funky part about this. I'm
way better at picking college basketball games. I don't know why.
It's actually my first love sport before getting into football cracket.
But hey, seventy Ats winning by two tonight was just
I was a little been winning by twenty so uh yeah,
this is a you know, but you know what though,
(08:55):
this was kind of an easy tournament, so it was
so chalk. I mean, this is yeah, we talked about
this four. But we're gonna have the same thing we
have in football. We're having a basketball now is in
a era of nil. You're not gonna have as many Cinderellas,
and the Cinderellas aren't gonna have a prayer once they
get to the final four. And for all the people
out there like, oh, this is kind of a bad tournament.
(09:17):
I didn't get my you know, Cinderella said, by way,
the Cinderella story is a horrible term because you know
the story of Cinderella being basically, yeah, the beautiful girl
gets the breaks. So that's really the wrong way to
put it. But all four number ones in the final four.
You had a pretty good Sweet sixteen and Elite eight,
you know, some some pretty good games down the stretch,
(09:37):
and then two great Final four games that epic ended
the duke game, and then that tonight. I mean, look,
you know, after a women's NCAA tournament with forty eight
double digit blowouts, the horrible injury to Juju and really
awful final four. I mean, this, this this tournament kind of.
Speaker 4 (09:56):
Came through, gave us everything we needed to. As Jason
I were talking about a little bit earlier, Pete.
Speaker 5 (10:02):
This game Michigan Wing, except Michigan coming well.
Speaker 1 (10:06):
But you would have liked to have had Duke in
the national title game. I'm sure that's the one thing
they would say. We'd like to have them there, win
or lose, you want to have them.
Speaker 4 (10:12):
But in the end, we we ended up getting great
games down the stretch, and even this one it gave us.
It wasn't aesthetically pleasing for the for the most part,
but it certainly gave us a great moments and possessions
down the stretch. The stat that stands out, Pete, is
the last shot that Houston took came with two twenty
nine left on a tip in.
Speaker 5 (10:33):
Yeah. But see the thing about the aesthetically pleasing part
is that's kind of these two teams. I mean, that's
what the I mean, Houston's number one in the nation's
scoring defense for a reason. They they didn't play pretty games.
I mean it was you know, Florida was at thirty
two points with like twelve minutes to go. I mean
that that's this high power a team as the country
(10:54):
in Florida. The way they played also big deep. I
mean the offering got game kind have gotten blown off
after what happened for the duke, but Auburn had that thing.
But Florida did its thing and they clamped on defensively.
And that's just like you were talking before about Clinton
Junior and you know, coming too late. This team all
(11:14):
year long did that. This is just one of those
teams that in the final three minutes, for whatever reason,
they found the clutch shots. They just never buckled. And
look there now the national champion in a year again
where you have four number one. I was a regular
season believer that regular season championships mean everything. Kind of
thinks that the one team out of the flour who
(11:36):
didn't win the regular season conference championship won the national title.
But it's kind of hard to fault they were really
that good all season all.
Speaker 1 (11:44):
Yeah, Pete, all this stuff you said, all I keeps
all keep thinking about is is like, hey, maybe sometime
in October and you know, to hear somebody saying again
and this is the point Florida is going to give
back their national championship for this first down against Alabama
that they fail more. It is now first and goal
(12:05):
Florida at the five yard line. They've the national title.
Kelvin Sampson is pouring champagne over his head. Houston's holding
up the title.
Speaker 3 (12:13):
We knew it.
Speaker 5 (12:14):
What happens, and you coming give it about Let's say,
you guys, we're gonna be talking six, seven to eight
weeks from now, we're gonna be talking about looking a
look at the Florida football schedule. Find me like two
wins it is, they're gonna be a lot better. But
in a year not like Look, in college basketball, you
(12:35):
play everyone, you don't. You don't miss teams you know
you play. Maybe you get a stasquatch stages. Kelvin Sampson
put it early on on your early schedule, but you
play everyone. College football, when you've got a sixteen team
or eighteen team league, sometimes you miss Alabama and Georgia
and LSU, and sometimes you play them all on the road.
And that's Florida this year.
Speaker 3 (12:57):
He's on Twitter at Pete few Tech, that is at
Pea Fu Tech.
Speaker 1 (13:00):
Checkout college Footballnews dot com if you don't believe me
with his prediction for this game, Florida comes through in
the final two minutes. Unlike Duke, Pete is always buddy.
Appreciate it man. We'll talk to as we get closer
to the draft.
Speaker 5 (13:13):
You guys a rule. I love this than be good brother.
Speaker 4 (13:17):
Appreciate you at Pete fu Tech where you find him
College Footballnews dot Com. Uh so you're taking the under
because Florida is projected to win six and a half.
Speaker 1 (13:25):
Yes, but well, well maybe seven. If you know, if
they do give the national title back for a key
first that would be the greatest animation, not even a
key first down in a game they want, know what,
we want that instead, we want to key first out.
Speaker 3 (13:41):
We'll give. We'll give the national title back. We don't care.
And taking coaches challenges to a whole other level.
Speaker 1 (13:47):
Here's this hunk of metal, of course. Yeah, you have
to throw that special flag.
Speaker 3 (13:52):
Oh yeah, whoa, this isn't there throwing gold. Florida is
taking a first down here against Florida State. Oh my good.
Speaker 1 (14:01):
Congratulations to the Houston Cougars, your national champions this year
in college basketball. Oh man, coming up next, Speaking of Houston,
move here from Kelvin Sampson see if he can explain
just what the hell was going on in the final
play of this game that we're going to continue to
break down again. The party is rolling with us here,
(14:22):
Jason and Mike Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (14:25):

Speaker 3 (15:40):
Why you look at me like that? Say that on air, Jason,
say it on air. Come on, man, where's one shining moment?
All right?
Speaker 1 (15:52):
For Kelvin Samson, Ralph Samson, a Chem, Elijah On, Clyde Drexler, NASA,
the Astros, the Astros, Garbage Can, Dan Passerini, Ernest Gibbons
and Warren Moon. Congratulations to the Houston Cougars who almost
won the national title tonight. So close here we go
(16:17):
one shot the final two twenty nine. Yeah, good job
by them. Didn't have to change the lyrics. Yeah, no one,
you almost got there. He didn't get a shot off.
Speaker 3 (16:28):
You're supposed to shoot.
Speaker 1 (16:32):
You can't drop the ball and expect to win the game.
Speaker 3 (16:38):
Yeah, that whole sequence.
Speaker 4 (16:40):
Still trying to break that down by Congratulations to David Barrett,
who this time of the year gets.
Speaker 1 (16:45):
A lot of run Jets defensive back David Barrett, No,
he had a big inner something.
Speaker 3 (16:50):
Let still.
Speaker 4 (16:51):
I mean, he could be multi fascinating. He might have
been a great songwriter.
Speaker 1 (16:54):
Due big pick against the Steelers in the playoff game
that we still met, Doug Brian missed another field goal.
Speaker 3 (17:00):
Thanks for bringing I didn't bring it up. I brought
up to name it. He brought up David Barrett.
Speaker 1 (17:07):
So, of course I think of that playoff game against
the Steelers where Doug Brian misses a field goal in
the final two minutes.
Speaker 3 (17:12):
I think, oh, we're gonna lose.
Speaker 1 (17:14):
David Barrett picks off Roethlisberger and I'm yelling get into
the end zone because I knew we weren't going to
make a field goal. He gets tackled, Doug Brian misses again,
and we go to the overtime and the Steelers win.
Speaker 4 (17:26):
How about you just stop and let it be surface
level and don't unlock that other chamber of your brain.
Speaker 1 (17:31):
That that hold, can't you, said David Barrett. That's, of
course what I think of is like I could just
see the pages flipping in the dictionary and almanac of
your mind going to Barrett.
Speaker 3 (17:42):
Oh there it is. If you unlocked.
Speaker 1 (17:43):
Now you had said Marty Barrett, I would say, yeah,
find a lout of the eighty six World Series. Go
what do you got for me? But no, you went
David Barrett. Thanks gave David Barrett a lot of money.
He was Arizona dB. Anyway, go ahead, so finish with
your David Barrett story. He was just so important that
you get out.
Speaker 3 (17:58):
Go ahead.
Speaker 1 (17:59):
All I said was you the guy that wrote One Shining.
That's wen you go off on your tangent. We can
about all your misery, all your history that's led you
to this state. Congratulated everything final thing I can think
about in Houston, even nat you got.
Speaker 3 (18:15):
NASA you did. No, it was good. I mean, we
are at global show on the.
Speaker 4 (18:20):
iHeartRadio app to take us wherever you go, no matter
where you're at on the globe.
Speaker 3 (18:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (18:25):
And uh hey in this part of the show brought
to you by tang what astronauts drink? Uh So, Houston
loses the national title. Florida wins the final game because look,
the final play of regulation is just so indelible. At
this point, Houston with the basketball down to twenty seconds left.
They hold the ball for a long time, which is
a big question mark in the beginning. Why are you
(18:46):
holding it for so long? You want to be able
to get a bucket and put pressure on the other team.
They hold it for so long. It doesn't like they
knew what they wanted to do. Were they setting up
screens with that? Who knows that you had four players
within eight feet of the back basketball? And as a result,
Sharp goes up for a shot. He thinks he's gonna
get blocked. He drops the ball and Florida jumps on
(19:08):
it and wins the national championship. It's a final play
that doesn't make sense. Yet you'll do the best we
can to try to explain to you that just how
bad blowing the end of the game.
Speaker 3 (19:19):
This was by two.
Speaker 5 (19:21):
You say you gotta go, You say give it up
cryer six seconds seconds short.
Speaker 3 (19:27):
He won't. He can't touch it. He shot I an eagle.
Speaker 1 (19:43):
CBS on the call for a perspective, Right, we really
jumped up and down on Houston a wild aliy. But
there you know they're Fani jumped on you. Yeah, so
now you gotta take it. But I want to say
this if I'm a Houston fan, right, this is exactly
how I would have dealt with the end of the game.
I would have watched that happen. I would have watched
the clock hit zero. I would have turned the television
(20:05):
off right away. I would have walked. I would have
put on my shoes and left the house and gone
to get ice cream or somewhere, or a beer or
something like. I would have said, I can't even watch
what that was again. Right away, I would have said, no, done,
TV off, gone, I'm going out and I'm just not
gonna think about this. I'm going on vacation and when
I come back, we'll be in the middle of baseball season. Okay,
(20:29):
we'll be talking more baseball. I'm coming back the night
of the NFL Draft. That's what I've done, coming back
the night of the draft, because I'm hoping we get
what we need to get us pack up again. I
would because I walk away going what the hell is that?
I realize what the hell is that final play? Still
it's an hour and I still can't get free real life,
What any thought process was.
Speaker 3 (20:50):
With anything going on on that play?
Speaker 4 (20:52):
Yeah, I'm watching it and you got the dribble over
the top of the keep, but like there's no motion
at all by the Houston players, Right, you got the
ball hand bringing across half court, and then you've just
got a lot of standing around before suddenly they realize
as it goes to sharp, like all right, now we
start to break, but they're all so close, like there's
no spacing, no passing lanes, no anything. And then we
(21:16):
get the fatal the fatal end of game to turnovers,
final two possessions for sure. So maybe to get an
explanation on what the Cougars wanted to do, let's hear
from Cougar's head coach Kelvin Sampson. Just met the media
a couple of moments ago, very downcast, Kelvin Samson, not
one of those Hey we lost my chin is up already.
Speaker 3 (21:35):
It was.
Speaker 1 (21:35):
It was very Hey, this might have been my last
bite out of the sixty nine years old he's been
coaching for a long time. Here's Kelvin Samson talking about
the loss and the final play of Houston's defeat to Florida.
Speaker 7 (21:48):
Yeah, I'm just going through those last two possessions morning.
Thing else and comprehensible in that situation, we couldn't get
a shot, get a shot. We're down two and obviously
we didn't need it three. But you know, with the
manual and we we were struggling to score. Uh the
(22:11):
entire second half. We got you know, good looks, but
Florida was doing a good job running us, running us
off the line and forcing us to to score it.
But we just didn't do a very good job of
(22:32):
finishing some shots. You know. Uh, guys just been in
the paint scoring all year. You know, l j's d
developed a really good runner floater. I didn't go very
much tonight, Milos, but you know, get Florida credit to
you know, I'm not gonna sit up here in poor
(22:52):
Mouth and Pittymouth us. You know, we held that team
to sixty five points. You know, Clayton and Martin combined
to go five for twenty. If you told me we'd
hold those two guys to five for twenty and we
(23:13):
and we had a good plan. We just didn't. We
didn't score well enough to win. We scored it well
enough to be in a position to win. So it
comes down to those Dan You've got to you gotta
get You've got to get a shot. That's gotta do
(23:39):
better than that.
Speaker 6 (23:41):
Coach. Next one's up front to the left, Aaron.
Speaker 1 (23:44):
Aaron Beard with the ap Kelvin, what were you hoping
to get out of that last play?
Speaker 7 (23:50):
We have a set where it's a stacker Gate.
Speaker 1 (23:55):
All right, So there's a little bit of Kelvin Sampson
and you know you can hear he doesn't really seem
like he's got the got everything, all his thoughts assembled
yet like it's like it's still moving really in what happened,
what happened at the end? I'm trying to explain what happened,
Yet at the same time, I don't really know what
happened at the end it was you can tell in
(24:18):
his voice that that's what's going on.
Speaker 3 (24:20):
No, just trying to make sense of it, right, He's
dialing it down to the final two possessions, but also
trying to look at the larger scope of it as
we have throughout the show, Like he's going possessions like
he'll be going back into the first half, early early
second half or early first half, possessions that they didn't
score on after forcing turnovers, like all of that is
going to churn.
Speaker 1 (24:41):
But you see it bit by bit coming for Kelvin Samson.
All Right's a lot more on Kelvin Samson coming up
in a bit, but it is time to talk about
the Spoils going to the victor's five points tonight. They
need every every one of them. Thomas hof the Florida
Gators joined. It's now national champion Florida gain. How does
(25:03):
that feel?
Speaker 8 (25:05):
It feels incredible real way now, man, I'm not gonna.
Speaker 1 (25:08):
Uh so tell me what were the emotions? Like the
clock hit zero and your head is what exploding?
Speaker 8 (25:15):
Yeah, I didn't even know that it was the end
of the game. I'm not gonna lie. I thought there
was so much more time left and wow, yeah, it's
just wildy once that happened, it was just.
Speaker 4 (25:24):
Because you're sitting here in the studio Thomas looking at
each other, going, did that really just happen?
Speaker 3 (25:28):
The clock struck zero?
Speaker 1 (25:29):
Right?
Speaker 9 (25:30):
Like?
Speaker 3 (25:31):
There's absolute confusion?
Speaker 7 (25:33):
It was.
Speaker 8 (25:33):
It was definitely confusion. No, we don't know going on
with the ball bouts and there we a little confused
and luckily Condo made a great players went.
Speaker 5 (25:39):
Over to dive and grab it.
Speaker 3 (25:41):
So, wait, did you ask anybody is the game over?
Speaker 2 (25:43):
Like?
Speaker 3 (25:44):
Did you ask somebody? Game over?
Speaker 9 (25:45):
Right?
Speaker 6 (25:45):
We won?
Speaker 3 (25:46):
Yeah?
Speaker 8 (25:46):
I like looked up at the clock and I was like,
there's zero, let's go.
Speaker 6 (25:51):
That's it.
Speaker 4 (25:52):
Well, and that's what we We've been talking a lot
breaking this down right, a battle of two great defensive
huge efforts and certainly down the stretch and even allowing
Houston to get a shot off. Take us through the
defensive sets and what coach had to say to set
that up?
Speaker 8 (26:07):
Yeah, I mean, I think it just dis trusting each other.
And a big thing too is coach and Andrew Jack.
He's going to Campbell now he's gonna be a head coach,
but he deserves so much credit is blocking us in
defensively his whole year and turned this whole thing around
defense your good offense team last year, and he turned
around and won a defense end this year.
Speaker 1 (26:24):
Thomas, congratulations on the win. Now take us back. Here's
your huddle before the final possession. You guys are up
to Houston's got the ball. You've been playing great defense
the entire second half. What's being said is you guys
are going back on.
Speaker 8 (26:36):
The floor, maintain SETI, and just just cut away that lead.
You know, we are you talking about when we had
when we were down, or when we were.
Speaker 1 (26:44):
When you were up to going into that final possession
where you held them down.
Speaker 8 (26:48):
No threes as by walks out for damn hard on
that guy because God gold and said, whatever you guys do,
no threes, no three of the obviously won't made a
great defense, but he doesn't get enough credit for him
defensely how good he is. Went out there, made a
play and got it done.
Speaker 1 (27:02):
Man, has he ever jumped that high? Have you ever
seen him jump that high in your life?
Speaker 8 (27:07):
He don't on somebody earlier in the year is pretty
high up there, but no, it was pretty wild.
Speaker 4 (27:10):
Well it's crazy right because of the game as as
an unfolds, everybody's you know, the press clippings are all
he's just gonna walk to another thirty point performance. But
now we're talking about his defense at the end here.
Speaker 8 (27:21):
Thomas, Yeah, this is incredible.
Speaker 9 (27:23):
Man.
Speaker 8 (27:24):
He's just a great defensive player. And I think a
lot of scouts and people like say that that's a
disability has but I think next level, which is obviously
gonna be he needs to be.
Speaker 9 (27:32):
He's gonna be a great defender too.
Speaker 1 (27:34):
All right, So now how do you guys celebrate tonight?
Speaker 3 (27:37):
What's on? What's on the docket. What are you doing?
Speaker 5 (27:39):
I don't know.
Speaker 8 (27:40):
I can say now we're we're gonna have fun here
and then we're gonna get back to games until they're
with the fans.
Speaker 1 (27:46):
Man, I thought you're gonna say, well, I'm gonna study.
You got a big test tomorrow, so yeah, I'm done.
Speaker 3 (27:50):
We're all that I got.
Speaker 8 (27:51):
I got buy the two wins. Then I'm gonna be
there for that.
Speaker 3 (27:54):
Really, you got a test on Wednesday?
Speaker 10 (27:56):
Yeah, I do.
Speaker 9 (27:57):
Got class. I'm hoping going to that one though.
Speaker 3 (27:59):
I think he got an exemption.
Speaker 4 (28:01):
You want us to write it out that you took
the time out for us, I'll put it on official
letterhead everything.
Speaker 3 (28:06):
We'll write a note for you. It's all good. Isn't
an early class? Is it like an early class in
the morning?
Speaker 8 (28:11):
Oh yeah, it's like, yeah, that's way too early.
Speaker 10 (28:15):
Man.
Speaker 1 (28:15):
Hey, listen, here's the thing. But I learned at college.
You do not want to have anything on the left
side of noon. Everything on the right side of noon. Man.
Speaker 8 (28:26):
I appreciate y'all congratulate about.
Speaker 3 (28:28):
On the way National champion Thomas take it easy body,
have fun.
Speaker 8 (28:32):
Appreciate it.
Speaker 3 (28:33):
Oh that's great. Yeah, I'm not making it to that class.
Speaker 1 (28:36):
What happened to And this guy is so good he's
made it to every class.
Speaker 3 (28:41):
He's not missing. I'm not making it to that class. Yeah,
I'm not going.
Speaker 4 (28:44):
This is one where the professor has to put out
the edict. These four people or however many are in
the class with Thomas.
Speaker 6 (28:51):
How cool?
Speaker 3 (28:52):
How that was fun? A pretty cool kid.
Speaker 2 (28:54):
That is.
Speaker 1 (28:54):
Yeah, I'm not making it to that one of my
favorites to join us after and Natty, I mean that
was great. I mean that was yeah he got and
like how he said, I didn't know the game was over.
I didn't know, Like he's a game, like it's got
to be like in your head because of the moment
is so crazy, Like this wasn't a typical ending to
a game. You can ever say, not a mission. I
looked up at the clocks, that's it, and everybody thought, Okay,
(29:16):
it's over.
Speaker 4 (29:17):
We won balls on the ground, You've got guys hitting
the floor and okay, I guess it expired because even
like we're watching it is like, what, what's the final?
Speaker 3 (29:27):
Was like, No, he's dribbling the ball up, that's it. Chaos.
Speaker 1 (29:32):
So apparently the BIO two class in Florida.
Speaker 3 (29:35):
On Wednesday at ten am.
Speaker 1 (29:37):
Well, if Thomas isn't gonna be there, I'm not gonna
go Like if I'm college, Hey, he's in my class.
We're gonna talk about the national championship. Man, I was
hanging out with Thomas all night. I can't be expected
to go in. I'm going to Bio two man, you know,
I mean really, And I shouldn't say this because it
is about student athletes and at kids go to class?
Speaker 3 (29:54):
Do we do?
Speaker 4 (29:55):
We still have to say that, but in this new
world order the same Okay.
Speaker 1 (30:00):
I think you do all right, But I just want
to say this is that I know I graduated, well
I did graduate from Syracuse, but I know I went
to My percentage of classes attended was probably just like,
maybe a little bit better than Caitlin Clark's shooting percentage.
Speaker 3 (30:16):
Now it was probably in the high forties. No, that
was probably in the high forties. And yet here we
are sitting together, yeah, high forties where I was.
Speaker 1 (30:22):
Uh time now to find out what's trending for men
who also blew off BIO two in college.
Speaker 3 (30:28):
It's Steve Deesager with what's.
Speaker 10 (30:29):
Trend By the way, I also blew off biosphere too.
By the way, the very honest Thomas aid, that was great.
That was really great. Guy who averaged ten points a game,
and not from Florida, from Pennsylvania, but apparently was a
Team Tebow fan and he's a Florida Gator and now
he's a national champion. Florida beach Houston for the title tonight,
(30:51):
sixty five sixty three. The Gators trailed my twelve early
second half. I tied the game up with about eight
minutes to go. Walter Clayton, Gators All American from three
point range was one of seven, but defense late and
he had eleven point seven assists in San Antonio attendance
with sixty six thousand. Houston had the ball for the
final nineteen seconds but failed to get a shot off.
(31:12):
Houston scored one point in about the last two and
a half minutes with four late turnovers. This is a
Florida program that a year ago lost in the first
round and the final was one oh two to one
hundred against Colorado. But now Todd Golden, at age thirty nine,
is a national champion, the youngest head coach to win
(31:33):
the national title since Jim Valvano nineteen eighty three. His
Gators this year. The record against top five ranked teams
five and zero.
Speaker 1 (31:42):
Hey, can you tell me who did North Carolina State
beat in nineteen eighty three?
Speaker 3 (31:46):
Tell me who they beat? It was Houston fo Yeah, exactly,
sorry about that. That was Fi Slama Jamo.
Speaker 10 (31:51):
You know, we referenced the absolute worst shooting game we've
ever seen with in a final. That was in Houston, Texas,
when Yukon beat Butler in twenty eleven. That's still the record.
I am sure where Yukon shot thirty five percent from
the floor and still.
Speaker 3 (32:06):
Won the title do that night.
Speaker 10 (32:08):
By the way, the losing side Butler that night shot
nineteen percent for the floor. I will never get those
two hours back. Sacramento came back to meet Detroit in
the NBA one twenty seven, one seventeen. Miami sent Philly
to a twelve straight loss one seventeen.
Speaker 3 (32:25):
One oh five.
Speaker 10 (32:26):
There is late night NHL going on. About twelve minutes
left Seattle still leading at LA two to one, Anaheim
ahead of Edmonton two to one early in the third.
For Saint Louis, the twelve game winning streak is over.
Blues lost at Winnipeg three to one. Tampa Bay a
five to one winner at the Rangers, and everything's final
in Major League Baseball.
Speaker 3 (32:44):
Now.
Speaker 10 (32:44):
The Padres are nine and two this year after holding
on five to four over the A's. The Dodgers record
nine and three after giving up a couple of hundred
runs and losing six to four at Washington. San Francisco
with an eight and two record, the Giants got shut
out at home two nothing by the Reds, who scored
two in the eighth. San Francisco's seven game winning streak
ends the win to Hunter Green of Cincinnati. Eight and
(33:07):
two thirds innings on the hill, seven strikeouts.
Speaker 3 (33:10):
Back to you.
Speaker 1 (33:10):
Thank you, Steve O. Bio two Wednesday. I'm trying to
find out Bio two Florida, University of Florida, Wednesday. Gotta
give a shout out to that protect I've just got
canceling it. Yeah, if you're the professor, you may as
well just cancel the class. Yeah, we're not coming. I
sent the dean the audio.
Speaker 3 (33:27):
They're good. Oh good, that's a dean. Hey.
Speaker 1 (33:32):

sixty three to win the national championship. We had Thomas
(35:22):
Hawk on the show with us a few minutes ago
said attending Bio two on Wednesday may not be in
the cards for him. Optional would be a strong way
to put it. He's got a test on Wednesday. That's gutsy.
If you're gonna skip. If you're gonna skip, you got
a test on Wednesday, I'm still gonna skip. I won
the Nationals, I got a natty. I don't need to
come to clac here's my piece of the net. I
(35:42):
don't need to come to class. Does he have to
trade that?
Speaker 3 (35:46):
Ooh ooh.
Speaker 1 (35:47):
If you got a piece of the net for the oh,
that's tough man. I'd want to hold on too that.
Speaker 4 (35:51):
Sometimes there might be some ethics violations, the all.
Speaker 3 (35:56):
The nil stuff. You can do any of that stuff.
You can do whatever you want it.
Speaker 1 (35:59):
Just like what if you had that as like a
golden ticket, like either for a grade in class. I
don't have to come all semester, but I give you
the bit of the net that I cut down, but
I don't have to come to That's one hell of
a bet.
Speaker 3 (36:11):
I would actually come out. And that's a hell of
a bet you're making now right. It's like I'm not
coming to class.
Speaker 1 (36:15):
Like and I get an A, but I get an
aye when I give you the net. I would try
to cut the net as in many small pieces as possible,
so I could I can maybe do ourt out. I
could do a whole semester of not going to class.
Speaker 4 (36:26):
Well, I mean, look, if you have an authenticated you
can probably sell it to one of the card companies
and have it pressed into.
Speaker 1 (36:31):
A I saw what happened to the guy from West
Covina earlier today.
Speaker 3 (36:36):
Not great, that's a whole other thing. Joining us now
on the hotline.
Speaker 1 (36:39):
It is all National Champion Night with US Gator Star

Speaker 1 (37:24):
Is verystatically what was it like experience in the final four?
Speaker 3 (37:28):
This time from a second time?
Speaker 9 (37:30):
From from this perspective, it's it's it's the perfect ending
of the chapter of a career. Understand. I'm just super
power for these guys in the locker room, all the
work they put in. Uh, definitely definitely deserves everybody here.
Speaker 1 (37:43):
All right, take us through the final play the clock
strike zero. They don't get a shot off. What were
you guys trying to do on that play?
Speaker 9 (37:52):
Honestly, we were just trying to get a stop and
get a rebound until the game. And that's what walking
Clayton did. Man, he showing up on the office of
the US depend Man, that's why he's camp picking an
NBA driver.
Speaker 1 (38:05):
We talked to Thomas a few minutes ago and he
said that he had a tough time believing the game
was over. He's even though the clockheads here, We're all
looking around like, is that it.
Speaker 6 (38:12):
Is the game over? Do we win?
Speaker 3 (38:15):
Yeah?
Speaker 9 (38:15):
Man, it's crazy, it's real feelings. It don't feel real,
but you know, it definitely is.
Speaker 3 (38:23):
All right. So now what are you guys gonna do tonight?
How do you celebrate?
Speaker 9 (38:27):
I don't know. Yeah, we're gonna figure it out when
we get to honestly, but we definitely have some fun
with our families and our friends, and we definitely want
to enjoy it.
Speaker 1 (38:37):
Thomas said he might skip class. I might celebrate by
skipping class on when.
Speaker 9 (38:41):
Class class, they gotta they gotta they gotta excuse the
guys and the school gotta understand that for the history
for the school. Uh oh yeah, Hey, if you need us.
Speaker 1 (38:57):
We'll write a note for you, excusing you like it's
a high school or something. We'll write a note for
you excusing you like it's high school. I said, if
you need to, we'll write a note for you that
excuses you like it's high school.
Speaker 9 (39:15):
I'll I don't go to class and I got my degree.
Speaker 3 (39:19):
All right, you're a national champion. You know you don't
need to go to class. All right.
Speaker 1 (39:24):
There we go a lot of congratulations, man, enjoying, enjoy
the celebration. There we go.
Speaker 3 (39:29):
Great. I don't go to class and I graduated.
Speaker 1 (39:33):
Well, I mean, I man, he was at FAU and
he's been in a tailand final warm and he's done.
Speaker 3 (39:43):
I don't go to class and I graduated. So you got,
what's so funny?
Speaker 10 (39:47):
You're out here acting like anybody at Florida class it's done.
Speaker 3 (39:51):
Yeah, you wouldn't even go to class. So let let's
talk about the rigorous academics at the University of Florida.
It's just a general like.
Speaker 4 (40:00):
That's one of the great questions I have in this
larger new world of the NCAA, is are we still
checking academic transcripts at all?
Speaker 3 (40:09):
I mean, it's certainly Elijah. I mean, he's already done,
so he ain't care. I'm done, man, I'm done. I'm done.
You're never gonna see me on campus again after right,
for those guys, I'm out. We're celebrating this week and
you're never gonna see me again. That's it. I'm done.
Speaker 1 (40:22):
That's the greatest response I've done. Everybody, We've done, how
many interviews, that's the best response.
Speaker 3 (40:27):
I don't know. I'm not going to class. I'm not
going to class. No, no, no, no, no class. Yeah,
we write the note for all of us. None of
us want to go to class. Oh my goodness. I
don't know what we're gonna get coming up next, but
keep it here.
Speaker 1 (40:39):
Ever know Jason and Mike Fox Sports Radio, Florida's went
over Houston.
Speaker 3 (40:43):
The Final Power Hour is next. This is Fox
