Speaker 2 (00:59):
You must hate your family, that's right.
Speaker 4 (01:02):
That's right, thank you.
Speaker 5 (01:03):
And you know what, honestly you said it, I didn't
and uh and there it is.
Speaker 4 (01:08):
No you know what's amazing is I I am the.
Speaker 5 (01:12):
Type of person as as you probably are to working
a later shift. Over the years, I sleep over over
the years has become less valuable to me. And I
don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing,
but I can sacrifice a couple hours of sleep to
have some fun and wake up feeling just about the
(01:35):
same every morning, which is to say, like garbage. So
if I'm gonna be if I'm gonna if I'm gonna
feel like garbage waking up either way, why not have
a little fun all the way into the early hours
of the morning.
Speaker 4 (01:51):
Why not that sounds good to me.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
I hear you, I hear you.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
But you know what I and this is where I
can look. Sleep is something that I I absolutely need.
But can I get by now?
Speaker 4 (02:03):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (02:03):
Cause you know why Cause in like my mid forties,
like set like you know, you know, five or six
years ago, I discovered how wonderful coffee was, right like
it was my mid forties where I'm like, you know, yeah,
And now I feel like.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
Okay, I got up early today, I'm just gonna go
get it. I'm just gona get a coffee.
Speaker 1 (02:19):
I'm gonna go get a MoCCA and I'm gonna have
it and I don't need my I'll drink like half
the mocha and then save half or like later on
in the day. I'm like, oh, this is this is
like a drug. It's like you take your first sip
and I go, oh wow, all of a sudden, cobwebs
are cleared.
Speaker 4 (02:33):
Everything.
Speaker 2 (02:33):
I'm ready to go. Man, I was.
Speaker 1 (02:35):
I was just dragging, like I couldn't even put one
more foot in front of the other.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
One sip of coffee, I go, oh, yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
It's like it's like taking a like in the Boys
taking that V when they give you a V to
turn you into a superhero.
Speaker 2 (02:46):
I'm like, ah, I feel like a superhero. Oh I
need it.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
Was this just quick sip of coffee, this quick mocha,
and I'm fantastic right now.
Speaker 5 (02:53):
I have a really funny story to tell you about coffee.
So I'm playing for the Chargers in twenty thirteen and
we go to the playoffs. We sneak at where a
wildcard team. At the end of the season. We needed
to just rattle off a bunch of wins in a row,
and we needed some help around the conference, and.
Speaker 4 (03:14):
We got the help we needed.
Speaker 5 (03:15):
So we go on the road to face the Cincinnati
Bengals twenty thirteen postseason, and we look.
Speaker 4 (03:24):
I'm a backup offensive lineman with the team.
Speaker 5 (03:27):
Nick Hardwick is the starting center for the San Diego Chargers,
the then San Diego Chargers at the time.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
Thank you you played there. Fine, Yeah, you played that.
You played in San Diego. It's fine, that's right.
Speaker 5 (03:40):
So Nick gets hurt like fourteen plays into the game.
Now it's a kind of a cold, misty day, and
since Cincinnati, you know, it's January, you know, so it's
the rain is kind of spitting at you. It's it's
chilly in the jungle. So I'm I kid you not.
I snuck a cup of coffee to the sideline from
the from the locker room, and I am literally, I
(04:04):
am literally sipping on a cup of coffee when somebody goes, hey,
do you see that? And I'm looking to the field,
you know, because you look at the scoreboard sometimes you're
looking at the stands.
Speaker 4 (04:14):
You know, there's a.
Speaker 5 (04:14):
TV timeout or you know the action in between the plays.
You're maybe not paying close attention to what's happening on
the field.
Speaker 4 (04:21):
I go, what's that now? And he goes uh, it
looks like Nick's heard.
Speaker 5 (04:24):
I was like Nick who, and he goes, Nick, like,
you gotta do you know where your helmet is?
Speaker 2 (04:30):
And so I did really say Nick Who.
Speaker 4 (04:35):
Yeah, I was.
Speaker 5 (04:36):
Really that lost in my own thoughts for the moment,
and so so like, you need to find your helmet.
So at the same time I'm looking for my helmet,
which was back on the bench, I'm also now trying
to find a safe place to put this cup of
coffee down because I'm like, I'm gonna need that, and
so I secure it with one of the athletic traders,
grab my helmet. Forget all about the coffee because now
(04:56):
I'm playing in the game. But yeah, we went on
to win that road game and Cincinnati. I credit a
lot of it to the dark roast that I was
I was sipping on before stepping onto the field.
Speaker 4 (05:05):
Thank goodness for that.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
Wow, I hate Nick.
Speaker 4 (05:07):
Got hurt?
Speaker 1 (05:08):
Nick who Ordburger, don't mess with me, get your help
the game.
Speaker 4 (05:13):
That's exactly what it's got. The conferencing. Oh dude, I
was fueled. The other thing, the other.
Speaker 5 (05:19):
Discovery during that game, well maybe not a discovery, but
pregame during that game. I mean of all the games.
I'm gonna end up playing seventy five, maybe eighty percent
of this game. I have no idea, right because, like
I said, I'm I'm on the sideline's backup. I'm drinking
chicken stock. That was another nice touch by Cincinnati. They
(05:39):
put chicken stock in one of the Gatorade coolers for
the road team on cold Winter games. I was like,
what a nice touch. The hospitality in Cincinnati is remarkable.
So anyways, that's a long winding road away from where
we were talking about originally.
Speaker 4 (05:56):
Yes, I hate my family, Jason. Yes, I'm sure they
put to.
Speaker 2 (06:00):
Fit in there to make you sleepy when you're playing
that game. But I tell you, the charges aren't fired
out of their blocks. I don't know.
Speaker 1 (06:05):
I think maybe a little bit too much of too
much soup for rich Ortenberger here, I don't know, doesn't
look as fast as he normally does.
Speaker 5 (06:13):
I was fueled up, man, I felt great. I felt great.
It was just it was pomping through the system.
Speaker 2 (06:18):
All right, Well, let's kick things off.
Speaker 1 (06:19):
We talked about an NFL Power hour here, and look,
there's no better way to start off a power hour
than with coffee. But we talked about one of your
former teams, the Patriots last hour on the show, And
there's reports out today that Bill Belichick is biding his
time to get back in the NFL next year, and
that he has focused on three jobs where he would.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
Come back to coach. He wants to break down Shula's record.
Could he come back?
Speaker 1 (06:45):
The teams that we're talking about, the Cowboys, the Giants,
the Eagles, they all could part ways with their head
coach after another after a bad year this year. Do
you believe that Belichick is gonna be on a short
list and can come back. I can coach in the
NFL with one of these teams next year.
Speaker 5 (07:04):
Yes, I do think he could be back with one
of those teams this year. And for good reason. All
of those teams mentioned could be looking for a head
coach next year. I think it would be ridiculous for
any team searching for a head coach next year not
to consider hiring Bill Belichick.
Speaker 4 (07:19):
He's the greatest coach to ever coach the sport.
Speaker 5 (07:23):
I don't say that like with any sort of I'm
not being flippant here, I'm not joking here. Look, I
had the privilege of playing for the Patriots for three
years I was drafted by Bill Belichick.
Speaker 4 (07:36):
You could argue.
Speaker 5 (07:37):
Biases, I'm willing to hear that, But sitting in those meetings,
listening to the sermon and understanding the mission was easier
with Bill Belichick than with any other coach that.
Speaker 4 (07:52):
I had ever played for. He was the most intelligent.
Speaker 5 (07:55):
He had the in my opinion, the greatest grit on
what we needed at the times that we needed at
the most in terms of information or motivation, he was masterful.
And so any team looking for a coach next season,
if they don't look to hire Bill Belichick, what.
Speaker 4 (08:18):
Are you doing?
Speaker 5 (08:19):
In fact, it kind of feels ridiculous that he was
left out in the cold. Now, I understand certain owners
were looking at the bottom line and saying, who do
we have the kind of money that he's looking for
to spend.
Speaker 4 (08:33):
I get it, it's a business, and.
Speaker 5 (08:35):
Maybe you don't want to part with some part of
sixty million dollars over a three year deal, or eighty
million dollars over a four year deal, or whatever it
would take at this point in his career to get
him to coach your football team, whether you're a great
team or a crummy team.
Speaker 4 (08:51):
In roster construct.
Speaker 5 (08:52):
I don't know, but yeah, to answer your question, in brief, Dallas,
New York, Philadelphia, all three of those teams could be
looking for coach, So could he foreseeably coach any of
those three?
Speaker 4 (09:04):
Absolutely see.
Speaker 1 (09:06):
The only team I see would be the Cowboys because
Jerry Jones would do something crazy for the headlines, and
I can see him being enamored with the memory of
Bill Belichick and basically looking at the back of his
football card. Because while I agree with everything you said
about Bill Belichick, he's lost his fastball. You saw the
disrepair that he sent New England into. Post Tom Brady,
(09:29):
I'm making all the decisions. I'm gonna have a guy
be an offensive coordinator who has never been an offensive
coordinator before. He has been a defensive coordinator, and the
team just got worse and worse. His personnel decisions didn't work.
He couldn't get the team to follow him. And I
keep going back to that crazy ass lateral play against
the Raiders that they lost a game on that I said,
(09:50):
if the team really respected and listened and we're following
Bill Belichick, nobody does that. Ramondre Stevenson doesn't throw the
ball back to Jacoby Jones, who throws up by that
that doesn't happen. Belichick had his time, he lost his fastball.
I think the league told us last year what they
thought about Belichick, because anybody could have had him. The
guy had a two interview lead on everybody in Atlanta.
(10:11):
It was okay, he's got and he still couldn't get
that gig. So I mean, even if the Giants and
the Eagles are looking for somebody next year, I don't
think any of them are gonna say, well, yeah, we're
Bill Belichick away from winning at all. It's Hey, if
this was twenty fifteen, twenty twelve, twenty seventeen, twenty, okay,
I get it. But you saw what happened without Tom Brady.
You saw the decisions that he made, You saw how
(10:32):
bad things were the last year. You saw him to
have to get a very public divorce from the Patriots,
where you'd never thought that would happen. Look what the
guys accomplished. I think the league has told us this
is what we think of Belichick, and outside of Jerry
Jones just deciding hey, I want to have Belichick in
because boy, think of the headlines, I don't know anybody
(10:52):
else is gonna hire because you could have had him
this year if you wanted, and and nobody else took him.
Speaker 5 (10:57):
I don't disagree with anything you just said either. However,
I will I will say this. I think that I
think that we're probably reading a little too deeply into
the fact that he wasn't hired this coaching carousel session.
Because also, remember, there were a lot of valid.
Speaker 4 (11:16):
Candidates out there.
Speaker 5 (11:18):
Now, I mean, if we want to argue every single
hire against Bill Belichick, I could make an argument for
Bill Belichick in about half the cases. But the other
half I like a lot of the hires too, you know.
I mean, there were a bunch of vacancies, and I
think I think a couple of teams, actually more than
a couple of teams hit some home runs, and I'm
(11:38):
very curious to see how it works out for them.
But getting back to Bill Belichick and the ownership, Remember
when we talk about the NFL, we're not talking about
like some monolith. We're talking about essentially thirty two owners
and their opinions of how the league should be ran
or who they should hire. So only amongst those whose
(12:00):
thirty two owners, about a quarter of them were looking
for a head coach that which is actually a large
number of them, but a quarter of them.
Speaker 4 (12:08):
We're looking for a head coach.
Speaker 5 (12:09):
Now if their opinions are swayed, because these are people,
or these are ownership groups whose opinions can be swayed
by outside opinions or by their own subjective analysis of
what has happened. If they look at Bill Belichick and
they negate to look at the football like the criteria
that is most important, the fact that he has successfully
(12:31):
ran a franchise for two decades in New England, and
they just look at recency, bias or how things win
since Tom Brady left.
Speaker 4 (12:39):
I get it it wasn't smooth. That it absolutely wasn't.
Speaker 5 (12:43):
But most times when a coach loses a great quarterback
or even a good quarterback, he'll struggle.
Speaker 4 (12:51):
And even then he went to the playoffs once with
Mac Jones.
Speaker 5 (12:53):
Now, I'm not trying to sit here being a Bill
Belichick apologist, and I'm not trying to say that he
did it makes some mistakes, because he absolutely did after
Tom Brady left them, maybe before. But what I will
say is this football speaks for itself, and if you're
gonna make a football decision instead of an emotional decision.
Bill Belichick should have a job for the twenty twenty
(13:15):
fourth season. I think a lot of owners made an
emotional decision hiring somebody else because they were too afraid
of being criticized by people on the outside of their
football program looking in as opposed to making the best
decision they could in terms of a football decision.
Speaker 2 (13:32):
It'll be the Jets for a day.
Speaker 1 (13:33):
Yeah, I'm gonna come back because hey, it's the only
job I can get and I'd love to break that
record here in New York. I want to coach you
now twenty four years later. Sure, I'll do it. The
Jason Smith Show with Rich joorn Berger in for Mike
Harmon live from the Ti Rag DoD Com Studios. Our
NFL Power Hour continues. Next, we have a weird story
(13:54):
involving the number one overall picking the draft end. Are
we really going to see a soon restore a wide
receiver get traded? That's I said wide receiver T shirt.
That's a wide receiver that's coming up next right here,
Jason Smith.
Speaker 2 (14:09):
Rich, you know this is Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (14:59):
Fox Sports Radio, The Jason Smith Show with rich Ornberger
in for Mike Harmon. People don't know this was rich
Ornberger's wedding song. This is what he walked down the
aisle to Living Lavina Loca.
Speaker 4 (15:12):
Hey, God, who told you that? I mean, how did
you know? Unbelievable?
Speaker 5 (15:17):
I know?
Speaker 2 (15:18):
Hey. Justin Frosberg is a Chargers insider man. He knows things.
They'll tell you about it.
Speaker 4 (15:23):
He really does.
Speaker 5 (15:24):
He's always cut to the core of me, and honestly,
I can't. I can't lie to him any question, any
stone left unturned. Oh yes, to simply do his ask.
He goes out, made Frosty go way back.
Speaker 1 (15:37):
So we're in the middle of our NFL Power Hour
here we got more NBM. Look, Bronnie James hit a
couple of threes tonight, surprise, Caitlin Clark.
Speaker 2 (15:44):
Had a big night.
Speaker 1 (15:44):
But in the middle of big NFL power hour here
we talked about Bill Belichick a few minutes ago. Quarterback first,
then we'll get to the wide receiver trade. Caleb Williams.
We know this, he signed his big deal yesterday. What
you do is a big deal that's number one overall
pick with the Chicago Bears. Today we got a huge
(16:05):
caveat with it. That Williams look transcending quarterback, maybe the
best prospect we've seen in a long time, maybe ten
twelve years. He asked to have a caveat put in
his contract that they cannot franchise him when his contract
is up. The Bears said, okay, we hear you, We're
(16:25):
not going to do that. And so Caleb Williams did
not get that in his contract. And now remember killer
Williams represents himself. So there is that part of it,
But I don't see where he really thought that was
gonna happen, because there's one thing that would if the
Bears did that, how many phone calls would they get
(16:47):
from all the other teams in the NFL going what
are you doing now? Our quarterback's gonna want that? And
other Because once you open the door to something like that,
it's gonna be well, now our guy wants it. Now
this guy, well, this guy wants it. Not gonna give
up that kind of power. I mean really, I mean
I don't know that Caleb Williams kind of gets it. Okay,
there's certain things that you can ask for that you'll get,
(17:09):
and there's certain things that you'll ask more where it's
gonna be Hey, they may love you, but they're not
gonna give you this. So this kind of surprised you
that this was an ask that maybe he thought he
was gonna get. Like, this is not just about you,
This is about the rest of the NFL. You're not
gonna set some new trend where hey, guess what, I'm
the first guy that's gonna wind up not getting franchised.
But no, no, no, No, teams are gonna reserve the power
(17:31):
to do that as much as they.
Speaker 2 (17:32):
Can and keep that flexibility.
Speaker 5 (17:34):
Yeah, listen, I think they're a not just for the
Chicago Bears, but for the entirety of the NFL. Setting
precedence like this is not something any owner is really
interested in doing now. Of course, if it's you or
the rest of the owners, you'll always choose yourself. See
(17:55):
the Cleveland Browns for details with their Deshaun Watson.
Speaker 4 (18:00):
But I digress.
Speaker 5 (18:02):
If you can avoid it, then do so, because again,
it's it could come.
Speaker 4 (18:07):
Back and bite the Chicago Bears.
Speaker 5 (18:08):
It could come back and bite any of the other
thirty one franchises or owners who are in contract deliberations
in the future.
Speaker 4 (18:15):
So this is not a precedent. Anybody wanted a set and.
Speaker 5 (18:18):
Caleb Williams, I mean a couple of times over whether
it was sourced or actual, there have been some you know,
contract asks that have come.
Speaker 4 (18:30):
Up over the time.
Speaker 5 (18:30):
We all remember that before he was even drafted by
the Chicago Bears, it was opined that he may ask
for a percentage point or two from the Chicago Bears
to become their their starting quarterback, which is an interesting
ask for a guy who's never stepped onto an NFL field.
It's look, I'm not saying that there's even any validity
(18:53):
to that, but there is a faction of people, and
I would say the Caleb William camp have the loudest
of the drums out there who think he's going to
enter the league and shift the paradigm, that he's the goods,
that he is going to completely transform the landscape in
Chicago and potentially the landscape of escape of all of
(19:16):
the NFL can't miss prospect that reminds people of Patrick Mahomes.
Speaker 4 (19:21):
Yeah, maybe that's true, or maybe it's not.
Speaker 5 (19:24):
We won't know until we actually see him throw his
first football in the NFL, which, by the way, he's
still yet to do.
Speaker 4 (19:31):
So.
Speaker 5 (19:32):
Okay, he wanted to play without the team having an
option of franchise tagging him.
Speaker 4 (19:38):
That's not going to be.
Speaker 5 (19:39):
A problem if he plays really well for the next
three seasons, because guess what, they're going to renegotiate his
deal so that he doesn't sign some astronomical or they
have to pay him some astronomical amount of money once
this full contract is expired, or they lose him in
free agency to another team.
Speaker 2 (20:00):
Look, I'm a believer in him.
Speaker 1 (20:01):
I I look at the criticism he got and and
and it was way out of bounds. Like it's almost
like because he wasn't the shiny new toy that it was. Okay,
we're kind of sick of him for a year. We've
seen how great he was. Now here's his senior year,
which is not quite as great. I get it, Uh,
but all the critics all he's hugging his mom, he's
crying after the game, he paints his nails. I'm like, boy,
(20:22):
we're really just nitpicking on this guy right now when
you see what he can do on the field, and
and and I think that that what bears it out
is that as as much criticism as he got, there
was never a question that anybody besides him was gonna
go number one overall. It's good as Jaden Daniels was,
as much as Drake may got got talked up and
(20:42):
all these other guys, there was never a question anybody
but Caleb Williams is gonna go number one overall. And
he's coming into the league with a lot of help.
This is not Zach Wilson coming in where it's hey, yeah,
we got Garrett Wilson, what else WHOA Hey, good luck.
I mean you're talking about two big wide receivers, a
really good running back. They brought in a good tight
(21:04):
end already. Like this is tailor made for him to
step in and succeed right away. Like I have the
Bears as my a as a playoff team this year.
They'll flip that seven and ten to ten and seven,
and it's gonna be an eye opening thing to see
him lead the Bears that I with the with the
the talent and the ability to see the field that
(21:26):
I know he can do. He's someone that can be
accurate outside the pocket, which is a huge deal, especially
in the NFL. If you can do that and teams
are playing on roller skates, I mean, that's what the
guy can do, and he's coming in with a chance
to do it right away. He's got weapons. I'm a
huge believer in him, and I'm not surprised because I
think he's gonna have in the playoffs this year.
Speaker 5 (21:45):
I think I think the Chicago Bears are one of
those teams that has an opportunity, assuming they they hit
on Caleb Williams could be one of those surprise teams
just like the Houston Texans this upcoming season. We saw
it happen in the AFC with the Texans. We could
absolutely see it happen in the NFC with the Chicago Bears.
It is possible. We literally watched it happen in twenty
(22:09):
twenty three. So I'm with you. I put a lot
of belief, a lot of stock in what I've seen
from him. Also, here's the reality of the NFL these days.
This is the I don't want to say it's the
easiest time because that is minimizing how difficult the NFL is.
(22:29):
This is a really difficult sport to be good at.
It's a really difficult sport to be good at as
a rookie. But having said that, for quarterbacks entering the
league now, there has never been a more quarterback friendly
league than the current iteration of the NFL. And what
I mean by that is you have offensive coordinators now
(22:51):
bending over backwards to create offensive systems around the specific
talents of the quarterbacks that they're drafting in to or
signing into their programs via free agency. And the reason
for that is these coaches and these coordinators are under
an extreme amount of scrutiny make us better fast, or
we'll move on from you fast. Coaches and offensive coordinators
(23:15):
no longer have the kind of on ramp they used to,
so they need to get their teams good fast, and
so Caleb Williams and all the other rookie quarterbacks coming
in and frankly, all the other quarterbacks signing as free
agents to new teams or being traded to new teams
have a better opportunity to have success than they ever
have had in the NFL because you don't have coordinators
(23:37):
trying to stick a round peg in a square hole
or vice versa. They're not trying to force a quarterback
to play to their demands or the styles of their
specific offense. What they're doing now is they're curtailing offenses
around the talents of their players, and it's probably the
way it should have always been. It wasn't always like that, though,
(23:57):
So Kayleb Williams also has that feather in it cap.
His coordinators are going to try to highlight his specific
strengths and they're not going to try to force him
to just throw the ball from the pocket or run
a style of offense he's not accustomed to running. They're
going to try to amend their system to help him
out in Chicago.
Speaker 1 (24:16):
Jason Smith, Rich Orenberger, and from Mike Harmon tonight, from
quarterbacks to wide receivers. Are we really going to see
a big wide receiver trade that every pundit seemed to
be talking about. We'll find out in ninety seconds. But first,
Martin Whiz has what's trending in the wide world of
sports ended up.
Speaker 7 (24:34):
You guys are just talking about a Kayleb Williams signed
a four year, thirty thirty nine million dollar contract fully guaranteed.
He asked the Bears to agree not to use the
franchise tag at the end of his rookie deal. The
Bears declined. Scotti Scheffler is the outright favorite to win
the Open Championship. He's been the outright favorite in all
four majors this calendar year. He's the first to do
(24:55):
that since Tiger Woods in twenty thirteen. The Open Championship
starts in about an hour. Jack McDonald, Todd Hamilton, Justin
Leonard in the first group to tee off. Brandy James
finally hit a three in Summer League, going five for
eleven from the floor, two for five from three for
nine points. And the Lakers eighty seven to eighty six
win over the Hawks. Zachary Rechache and Dalton Connect, the
first round draft picks for either team, did not play.
(25:18):
Caitlyn Clark said a single game w NBA record with
nineteen assists today, but the Dallas Wings beat the Indiana
Fever one on one to ninety three. Arika Gumbawalle and
Obyssey Simms both at twenty four. Kaitlyn Clark had twenty
four points to go along with her nineteen assists. Hall
of Fame foward Cherro Miller will serve as the coach
of the w NBA team during the league's All Star
Game Saturday in Phoenix, while Olympic coach Sheryl Reeve will
(25:41):
lead Team USA. And speaking of Team USA, they routed
the men's team side routed Serbia in an Olympic tune
up in Abu Dhabi yesterday, one oh five to ninety seven.
Speaker 2 (25:51):
Steph Curry twenty.
Speaker 7 (25:52):
Four points, leading all scorers, including six three pointers.
Speaker 2 (25:55):
Jason and Rich You're up all right? No, no, A might
I gotta ask? I asked your question here. I'm ready.
You just mentioned the big game Abu Dhabi. I did.
Speaker 1 (26:03):
What's the difference between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. They're two
different cities, they.
Speaker 2 (26:09):
Are, they are two different country.
Speaker 1 (26:10):
You're right, but I gotta guess different between Dubai and
Abu Dhabi.
Speaker 2 (26:15):
I know that Dubai has an old section.
Speaker 7 (26:17):
I've actually been to Dubai, but I can't I outside
of that, I don't know what's in Dubai.
Speaker 2 (26:24):
They don't like the flintstones.
Speaker 1 (26:25):
But people who Nabu Dabi do you like that one?
Speaker 5 (26:34):
Right?
Speaker 2 (26:34):
You almost? I get you across the pond. But what
you're gonna tell that joke to everybody tomorrow? You are
so culture and you.
Speaker 4 (26:45):
Are so culture, I mean, you are so cultured traveler.
Speaker 1 (26:50):
Well, you gotta tell that joke to people of a
certain age, Like I can't tell that joke to my daughter.
She would go, I don't get it. One of the
one of the stones. Oh okay, Yeah, you're right. Okay,
you know what, I gotta older than that. I gotta
go older.
Speaker 4 (27:06):
Yeah, all right.
Speaker 1 (27:07):
So Davante Adams, if you listen to his agent, all
this trade talk is a load of huie. If you
listen to everybody else, he's getting traded. So we had
reports early this week Boomerisias and said, Hey, devont Adams
to the Jets. Feels like that's gonna happen at some
point by the end of the summer. Dan Or Lawski
on ESPN saying two days ago, yes, hey, this trade
(27:30):
looks like it's a FATA compley. It's going to happen.
His agent says all of this is false. Adam's actually
weighing on it today when he said, listen, if I'm
gonna go team up with anybody, it's gonna be Aaron Rodgers.
But I'm here, this is where I want to be,
saying all the right things about being with the Raiders
in Vegas. But look, Rich, this is going to happen,
(27:52):
and me, Jet fan, I'm doing all kinds of backflips.
I'm excited, going We're gonna have Garrett Wilson and DeVonta Adams.
It's gonna be awesome. Now, when is it gonna happen.
It's not gonna happen before the regular season, because I
believe where they're smoke, there's fire. People aren't gonna be
talking about DeVonta Adams getting dealt unless this was something
that is being bandied about in league circles and specifically
(28:13):
being tied to the Jets and having DeVonta Adams say
that's the one place I would go. The Raiders would
be punting on the season. And it's an awful message,
an awful thing to do to Antonio Pierce to say, hey,
your best player, your number one, your highest profile player,
We're trading him away. So he's gonna open the season
with the Raiders. But as the season goes on, look
(28:34):
the Jets, they're wide receiving corps ain't great. I know
they signed Mike Williams. Who knows when the guy is
gonna be ready to play right, He's coming off an injury.
He's not been the most stable of guys as far
as health goes. They're gonna wind up getting the middle
point of the season going we need something else in
the passing game. They don't have a big time tight
end to say, hey, this is a guy that we
don't have a George Kittle. Yeah, they have the running
(28:55):
back in Breise Hall, but they're gonna need something else.
So when you get close to the deadline, the Raiders
are starting over. They're running out Aid and O'Connell and
Gardner Minshew at quarterback. How many games are they really
gonna win? So when it gets close to the deadline, yeah,
that's and the Raiders are gonna say, okay, now we
can move Adams. We'll still get a decent price for him,
because the Jets will want them, they'll pony up for him,
(29:17):
and it's their way to then move on from there.
So I'm one hundred percent the Jets are going to
eventually wind up with DeVonta Adams. It's just gonna be
a lot closer to the deadline. It's not gonna happen
this summer.
Speaker 5 (29:28):
Well, it makes the most sense, right because Devonte Adams
is playing history with Aaron Rodgers, the courting that has
been going on between the two of them. DeVante Adams
says nice things about Aaron Rodgers. Aaron Rodgers obviously says
nice things about Devonte Adams, and so the dance continues.
And also, let's be honest, in that division, the AFC West,
(29:49):
basically a rookie head coach Antonio Pears with Gardner, Minshew
and ad and O'Connell are going to try to go
against the Jim Harbaugh led revamp Chargers, the Super Bowl
champion Chiefs and Sean Payton's Denver Broncos.
Speaker 4 (30:04):
That's an uphill climb. That is an uphill climb.
Speaker 5 (30:07):
So and by the way, I'm not forecasting that all
of those teams I just mentioned aside from the Raiders
are gonna be great, because they're going to in certain cases,
in certain examples, going to have their struggles as well.
But the Raiders are without question a preseason fourth place
team in that division. So it could go sideways quick,
(30:28):
and if it does, you know they're gonna be looking
to leverage some of their assets to increase their ability
to build the roster in the offseason, and Devonte Adams
would be the most attractive asset on that roster. Now
turning the page to I don't know, maybe an analogy
that people are more comfortable with or more familiar with. Okay,
(30:52):
his agents can say whatever they want, Devonte Adams agents,
whatever they say is.
Speaker 4 (30:58):
Whatever they say.
Speaker 5 (30:58):
Now this kind of reminds me of when the waiter
comes to your table and you say, hey, you know,
there's delicious meal. I think we're just gonna have a
couple of cups of coffee because you know, we have
a long night ahead of us. Oh, it was delicious,
Thank you so much. Okay, do you want me to
leave the dessert menu? Oh no, we couldn't, are you sure?
You know what, Let's just leave it on the table.
(31:20):
Just leave it on that, you know what. Over over
a cup of espresso, we'll discuss and so, no, there's
no commitment here. No we're not we're not going to
order the lemon curd cheesecake. We're certainly not gonna have
a Crembrolet. Not now right, we're all so stuffed from dinner.
But who knows, maybe a little bit later we could
be convinced.
Speaker 4 (31:40):
That's what it feels.
Speaker 5 (31:41):
Like is happening right now with Aaron Rodgers and Devonte
Adams and the Jets and the Raiders. Everybody's at the table,
everybody's enjoying. Everybody's already enjoyed the off season. The meal
has already been had, and they're just leaving the dessert
menu on the table. Nothing's been decided yet, nothing even
needs to be discussed yet. Let's just enjoy the cup
(32:01):
of coffee and we'll see where the night leads us.
Speaker 4 (32:03):
That's all. See.
Speaker 1 (32:04):
I dig that because whenever they leave the dessert menu,
I understand. Okay, I want to work backwards because I
want to get this chocolate crembreult because I can't get
that anywhere. So if I want the chocolate cremberlet, that
means I should get this for dinner, which means maybe
I don't get an appetizer. Okay, we're back. But I
always look at that dessert when they bring dessert menu.
They leave it on there, manny, Oh yeah, leave it there,
leave it. They just leave it right there. I want
to look at it. I want to work backwards.
Speaker 4 (32:25):
That's right. And you know what, and here's the reality
of the situation too.
Speaker 5 (32:29):
You know, Aaron Rodgers may he may have came to
the restaurant a full well knowing that he was going
to order dessert.
Speaker 4 (32:36):
But is he going to outwardly say it. No, But
he'll say, you know what, I've heard, the cremberlet is delicious.
As a matter of fact, I've had it before and
it is really good.
Speaker 5 (32:48):
Like I did it, And so the Jets go, oh
it is no, no, no, no, trust me, trust me. I
had it one time in Wisconsin, actually many times at Wisconsin.
Speaker 4 (32:55):
You guys will love the kremberlet. Here.
Speaker 5 (32:58):
Just bring it to the table and then I'll show
you how good it could be. And and look, I'll
put ayahuasca in it for you.
Speaker 4 (33:05):
That's right, That's right. Yeah, we're gonna go on a
real fun trip.
Speaker 5 (33:09):
Look, I I would love to see it too, because
the storyline would be phenomenal and so it'd be a
lot to talk talk about, a lot to chew on.
Speaker 4 (33:18):
But also just think about how good.
Speaker 5 (33:21):
Aaron Rodgers looked with Devonte Adams and vice versa. Devonte
Adams hasn't really been unlocked since he's been a Raider.
He I think he's been a good soldier for them,
but it just hasn't worked out. Aaron Rodgers, he hasn't
really worked as a New York Jets quarterback yet. I
mean he he just hasn't played yet. So we haven't
even seen how good it could be in New York.
(33:44):
Hopefully we have a little bit of a bigger sample
size before the trade deadline.
Speaker 4 (33:48):
Uh this upcoming season.
Speaker 1 (33:50):
Exit about of Fresca ex and Ornberger Jason Smith Ricchio
in from Mike Harmon tonight. The Power Hour of Football
continues coming up next, which will pose the question what
happens when predictions go horribly wrong?
Speaker 2 (34:07):
That's next right here? This is Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (34:10):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific.
Speaker 1 (34:17):
Fox Sports Radio The Jason Smith Show with rich Orenberger
in for Mike Harmon tonight. And We're going to conclude
our NFL Power Hour with this story because this is
just I don't know why. When I saw the story,
I said, Wow, that's a lot of guts.
Speaker 2 (34:32):
That's a lot of guts out of Nick Saban.
Speaker 1 (34:35):
So Nick Saban who now works for ESPN, leaving retiring
from Alabama Michigan, retiring a lot of people after their
run to the National Championship last year. Nick Saban was
at SEC Media Days and made some kind of headline
over the last twenty four hours because he did not
(34:55):
pick Alabama to make it to the SEC Championshi Game
this season. He predicted Georgia and Texas. Now, he went
on and gave great reasoning by saying, look, hey, I
believe in Jalen Milroll, believe in here, but hey.
Speaker 2 (35:10):
Secondary is a big is a big concern for Alabama.
Speaker 1 (35:13):
And then of course who would know better than that
about what the players he has when he has coming
in so he said, yeah, you know, I think that's
gonna be an issue. Both these teams can throw the ball,
so he's going Georgia and Texas. His players were asked
about it. They didn't see his former players at Alabama.
Didn't seem happy about it, but kind of left and
off a bit. A couple of players that I don't
listen to a guy that golfs all day. But coach
(35:34):
is still my guy and I love him. But I
gotta be honest, Rich. I know he's in the media
now and I can say, okay, hey, I give him
the nod, you know, for not picking his team, But
how do you not pick your team to make it
to the SEC Championship. You were just in the college
football playoff, right, It's not like you're coming off a
six and seven year You were just in the playoff
(35:55):
and you were one play from sending the game to
double overtime against Michigan. I was in the stadium there,
and you don't sit here and you don't pick.
Speaker 2 (36:02):
Your former team. All these kids that you coached and
that sweated.
Speaker 1 (36:06):
For you for the last four years, and the first
thing you do is very publicly say yeah, I'm not
a big uh, not a big fan of Alabama.
Speaker 2 (36:14):
This year. I was really surprised he didn't do that.
Speaker 4 (36:17):
Well, you know what's missing. I'll tell you what's missing.
Nick Saban's missing.
Speaker 5 (36:22):
So if you believe that, and I'm sure he does, that,
you're an important part of what made Alabama so special
over the course of his time there with Alabama. Well,
and you're gonna believe that Alabama is gonna struggle in
your absence.
Speaker 4 (36:38):
And so the reality is.
Speaker 5 (36:42):
Nick Saban list Alabama Crimson Time team and whatever special
sauce he brings to the recipe that puts them over
the top, even though it's by and large a similar
team to what they felt fielded last year. Me little
team's edging out Alabama this year in the SEC is
(37:04):
because he believed that his value add and what is
lost by his retirement is the reason why they'll struck ball.
I don't even want to say struggle, but but not
be his top pick for the SEC Crown. It makes
perfect sense to me. I do get it. There's gonna
be some feathers ruffled. But I also think that Nick Saban,
(37:26):
he's kind of machiavellian. There's a lot of Bill Belichick
and Nick Saban they work together for a long time.
Obviously they have a friendship, a relationship around the sport
of football. There's a very businesslike approach when it comes
to football.
Speaker 4 (37:44):
It's feeling. It's football, not feelings. So if he.
Speaker 5 (37:48):
Truly believes that Alabama is not the best team, he's
not gonna tell you no, no, no, no, Alabama's gonna have
a great season even though he doesn't feel it. He's
going to tell you, I think that Tech this has
a better chance or whatever.
Speaker 4 (38:02):
Team. Hey, he'll shoot it straight with you.
Speaker 5 (38:04):
So I truly believe that Nick Saban believes in his
picks because I don't think. I don't think he would
sugarcoat it at all.
Speaker 4 (38:14):
I really don't.
Speaker 1 (38:15):
I'm with you, but I don't know how you say
that when that's the guys you just coach.
Speaker 4 (38:19):
Right, Here's why.
Speaker 2 (38:20):
I'm gonna win win you over on this, righty?
Speaker 5 (38:22):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (38:22):
Yeah, let me here.
Speaker 1 (38:23):
Let's say I decide to retire from this show. Right,
let's side to Knockwood. Let's I decide to retire and
you come in and you're hosting with Harmon, Right, Okay,
that's great, Hey, And I do interviews with some blogs
I've been doing this for twenty years. Hey, Jason, you're retiring.
Hey what do you think? Hey is Richie? Oh and
Mike Harmon? Is that the best night time show there is?
And I go, you know, yeah, that's a really good show.
(38:46):
But you know they're gonna have some problems chemistry wise.
And there's some other shows I've listened to that I
think are probably a little bit better. Right now, See,
I would say those other shows are better, Like, really, I'm.
Speaker 4 (38:56):
Gonna say that.
Speaker 2 (38:57):
How do I How do I say that? That's what
Nick says? He even did.
Speaker 1 (39:00):
Yeah, No, I think all of you guys are great,
But now I think the other team like that.
Speaker 5 (39:04):
But time out, But time out, Hang on a second,
Hang on a second, because you have.
Speaker 4 (39:08):
To add a very important piece to this puzzle.
Speaker 5 (39:12):
So it's a Jason Smith show with your best friend
Mike Carmen for all these years, and then all of
a sudden you walk away from Fox. You say, no
more Fox, I'm retiring. But then you sign up with
some other outfit that's willing to pay you millions of
dollars to comment on other sports talk shows, and your
(39:33):
commentary creates headlines for this other this other network.
Speaker 4 (39:38):
That's what Nick Saban's doing. He's playing the game perfectly.
Speaker 5 (39:42):
Yes, to a greater or lesser degree, I understand what
you're saying. But he's also doing his new job to
the best of his ability. Because guess what. We're reading
a headline from Nick Saban?
Speaker 4 (39:53):
And what is it is? It's July. It's July eighteen.
Speaker 5 (39:56):
Sure it gets a we're talking about July eighteenth.
Speaker 4 (40:02):
I mean, preseason training camp hasn't even started. We care
about this.
Speaker 5 (40:06):
So he's doing a great job in his new job,
talking about.
Speaker 4 (40:09):
How his old job is his old his old job.
Speaker 1 (40:14):
I just said, Hey, we're gonna pay you millions off
to talk about other radio shows.
Speaker 2 (40:18):
Okay, I'm in.
Speaker 4 (40:19):
I'm in.
Speaker 2 (40:19):
What do you want me to say? I'll say whatever
you want me to say. What are you talking about?
The Ornberger guy?
Speaker 5 (40:23):
No?
Speaker 2 (40:23):
I know him? Yeah, what do you need me to say?
He's terrible man? You know he He doesn't know a
lot of words. That's the thing.
Speaker 1 (40:30):
He hasn't a lot of words. Listen, he repeats the
same words over. He has a no, just listen to
a show. He repeats a lot of words.
Speaker 4 (40:36):
Oh man, so much, repeating all that money.
Speaker 1 (40:39):
Sure, u Jesus Smith Richieo in for Harmon tonight. Coming
up next, not one but two huge basketball stories coming
off of what we saw tonight. Keep it right here,
Jasus Smith, Richieo. This is Fox Sports Radio.
