our Best of podcast goes up. Get our thoughts on
the NBA lottery, My big worry about the Knicks, which
(01:01):
we're talking about coming up in a few minutes, Bill bellichicking.
Everybody's missing the point. And now we have a pretty
big one happening right now between Denver and Oklahoma City.
It is getting chippy, like it is getting how mad
Monci I have seen you get at the Clippers. Like
that's how chippy this game is. Right now, Denver leads
(01:21):
it over the thunder seventy one seventy Still a lot
of time left here, just under four minutes to go
in the third quarter. But yeah, start things starting to
get a little pushing and shoving back and forth.
Speaker 4 (01:31):
Well, you know, ok see, kind of similar to your knicks.
Can they be successful consistently? Can they win in tough situations?
I feel like, okay, we've seen this, OKCE, Cleveland, Boston,
all these teams that were supposed to win because of
the way they performed during the regular season. They're getting
(01:54):
tested in ways that they did not get tested in
the regular season. And that's that's what we're seeing from
OKAC right now. They cruised through the season. They were
just hooping with their buddies.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
Every game, postgame, all of them together, hanging out, having
a good time.
Speaker 4 (02:08):
Now all of a sudden, it's like, oh no, no,
it's the it's the playoffs and the joker and Russell
Westbrook have something to say, have something to push around.
Speaker 1 (02:16):
Well, look, even because you know, you hit on a
bigger point than that, is that it's one thing for
a young team to be dominant in the regular season. Right.
The two best teams in the NBA Cavaliers and the
Thunder and they've been good the last couple of years,
but they've not been frontline good. And they're all young
players that are just getting their first taste of Okay,
(02:37):
now you're really on the NBA map during the regular season. Okay,
that's one thing. Then the first round of the playoffs
comes and you're playing a team that it really shouldn't
be on the same quarter as combolated. It's a blowout.
Now you get to the second round, where the teams
are at least a little bit better, and look at
what happens the teams who have been through the fire before. Right,
You've seen the Pacers win. They made it to the
(02:57):
Eastern Conference finals last year as an under dog.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
The Nuggets season tournament.
Speaker 1 (03:02):
Yeah, the ist I mean, I mean, you'll learn so
much about your team in the last Lakers still got
that banner hung for the last year, as I am, right,
But and you have the Nuggets, who of course were
the champs two years ago. They they're more battle tested.
Suddenly when the spotlight gets on you, things get a
little different. And when play gets a little bit more physical,
(03:23):
that's also a thing that they're gonna have to adjust to.
These teams are the great offenses that score a lot,
because look at what's happening with the Knicks and the Celtics.
The Knicks have become more physical, playing the situational defense
in the fourth quarter, and the Celtics are not. They're
not comfortable playing that way to go. So the Knicks
are up two games to none. So you see the
three best teams in the playoffs over the regular season,
they're all hitting difficulties now because either they're young, not
(03:45):
used to it, or hey, we're taking the other teams
taking this step up in the playoffs and they're not
ready to answer it yet.
Speaker 4 (03:51):
It's incredible to watch the physicality. It's almost like you
you just said it. They weren't expecting it, like they're
not used to it. And then you get down to
a game that comes down to physicality and maybe the
final minutes and okay, see what if you didn't get
to really live through that throughout the regular season, how
are you gonna perform now?
Speaker 1 (04:10):
How are you.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
Gonna get through that.
Speaker 4 (04:12):
If in the regular season you weren't in these close
matchups against the physical team, you don't.
Speaker 3 (04:16):
Know what to do.
Speaker 4 (04:17):
This is gonna be their first experience. The way Denver
is handling okay see, I think okay see is like,
oh man, I was I thought the Clippers clipped and that's.
Speaker 1 (04:27):
Why all through one Clippers gonna clip.
Speaker 4 (04:30):
But in reality, yeah, the Clippers absolutely just you know,
unraveled themselves.
Speaker 1 (04:36):
I know, you lost a lot of money on that series,
lost a lot of money.
Speaker 4 (04:39):
You've got to give credit to what Denver has done.
Both can be true that the Clippers beat themselves and unraveled,
but Denver also had to do what they needed to
do in the games that mattered. They've been there, so
okay see is kind of just like, what do we
do in situations like this where it's a close game
down to the final two minutes. We haven't been we
haven't gone through this. They cruised through the regular season,
(04:59):
they cruised through and then the joker is just not
even having a good game but having his way.
Speaker 1 (05:06):
Do you remember when before the series and the Clippers
and the Nuggets series began and you were running around
here going, and I said, and I said, this is
tailor made for you to lose in seven. I told
you this before the series even start. Hey, it'll be
just like a just like any Clipper year the last
four or five years, where hey, maybe Kawhi, we show
(05:28):
a little bit of promise, but then we lose a
little bit of problem that this has made for you
to have some highs in this series and then you're
gonna lose in seven games and some real lows. And
that's what happens.
Speaker 3 (05:36):
That's exactly what happened.
Speaker 1 (05:38):
I told you.
Speaker 4 (05:38):
The entire series sums up what it's like to be
a Clippers fan in the last five years.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
The entire the entire series.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
No, No, eventually, don't know. Kawhi is gonna do it.
He's gonna do him and Hard and they're gonna do it. George, No,
him and Hard. No, they're gonna do it. No, They're
gonna do it.
Speaker 3 (05:52):
Kawhi Klaw Game two. It was incredible.
Speaker 4 (05:55):
How that that's really that series from Game one to
Game seven told the entire story of the last five years.
Speaker 1 (05:59):
Yeah, and you see a Nuggets team that can handle
this type of situation and clearly and look to go
back to a point that we made on the show
the last few nights, is that here's a series that's
tied at one apiece, Denver playing at home. It's a
nip tuck game with the number one seed in the West.
No one is talking about how awful a move it
was that the Nuggets fired their head coach. All of
(06:21):
was I wanna We told you the night it happened.
If a coach has to be fired, he's got to go.
It doesn't matter when. Yeah, you gotta gotta go it.
If you gotta break up with somebody, I'm gonna wait
until after their birthday so I get presents. Now, I'm
gonna wait.
Speaker 2 (06:33):
I'm gonna wait.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
Until after Joe's wedding because it will be awkward if
I don't take her to Joe's wedding. No, no, no. If
you gotta break up, you break up right. If you
gotta break up on December twenty seventh, oh hey, right
after you break up, you gotta break up on February twelfth,
Oh two names, Dan, you gotta break up, man, you
gotta break up, and look at it. We said at
the time, you have to do it, and nobody is
(06:56):
saying what an awful move. The nugget. They ruined their seat. No,
they save their season and because there's no way they
would be here right now because the players didn't want
to come to work. Michael Malone hated his players at
the end. Sorry, Mike Malone handed his players at the end,
calling him out. None of them want to watch film,
none of them want to do this. No, and the
guy's got to go. You gotta break up. You gotta
break up what happens.
Speaker 4 (07:15):
And then you have the leadership though like they couldn't.
They did this knowing that they had the leadership around them.
We've seen Nicola Jokic in this playoff runt be the coach,
be the player coach. He's literally yelling at them.
Speaker 1 (07:27):
He actually is just the coach.
Speaker 4 (07:28):
He is.
Speaker 1 (07:28):
He just is the coach. He takes over every huddle,
he absolutely does he Are you, David? Are you done?
Are you okay? Because now I'm gonna talk. Make sure
make sure you give me a good thirty seconds at
the end, so you.
Speaker 3 (07:39):
Know, David. It's not saying anything. David is just like
go ahead, go ahead, go ahead.
Speaker 1 (07:43):
You got something? Yeah, all right, great, okay, that's perfect,
that's perfect.
Speaker 4 (07:46):
And with not just with Nicola Jokic, We've seen Jamal
Murray hit big shots. Like all of the experiences that
you want to have going into a big game.
Speaker 3 (07:54):
The Nuggets have gone through them in the last couple
of years.
Speaker 4 (07:57):
They have an edge, they have an edge, and if
if the Thunder can't figure it out, Denver.
Speaker 3 (08:03):
Is gonna go to the finals again.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
Watch out, watch out, watch out. Nix Nuggets Finals. Get ready,
I mean, go New York, goat New York, goat, go
new Ya. Get ready, get ready for Knicks Nuggets in
the finals. Now I've talked about all week. Hey get
them all of a sudden, My Knicks Pacers Eastern Conference Finals.
Four days ago, Now, Jason, you're a lunatic. What drugs
are you on? And three days ago was yeah, that
(08:25):
was funny, but it's not happening. Two days ago was yeah,
a lot has to happen. Yesterday it was wait a minute, man,
this gonna really happen. But a dent in those plans. Now,
as the Cavaliers very importantly got healthy and got a
huge win tonight over the Pacers one twenty six to
one oh four. The Pacers never really threatened, right and
this is a game where you think Indiana at home,
(08:46):
we're gonna go for the jugular. But it's it gets
to be you know, sometimes NBA, when you when you
break down what happens in a series, it gets full
of really minuttional i'mber talking to Doug Gottlib about this
a lot going. I mean, I can't tell you how
this small matchup affects this series. And you hear them
talk about how because because this center who plays twenty
(09:09):
five minutes a game is out, this is what's gonna
happen when the second unit comes on. And sometimes it's
that subtle, but sometimes it's it's also as simple as
the Cavaliers are a team with a deep rotation and
they go nine to deven. That's why they have the
best offense in the NBA. Right, Anybody can score, Yes,
Donn and Mitchell is their star at the head of
the snake, but they can score if you're missing a star. Yeah,
(09:31):
even the playoffs. This is what happens is how it
goes now, teams getting you know, everybody goes through injuries
all the time. If one star is out, Okay, this
is what we're gonna do. We're gonna miss him, but
we're gonna try to make up for it. Good good
teams can make up for it that way. But these
were three players, including an all star okay in Darius Garland,
that were missing, and they were then and they were
okay without Garland, right, they were still okay without him.
(09:54):
But then when you're missing your other players that you know,
when you're missing a third of your rotation, it becomes impossible.
How do you pull the pieces out like you're playing
giant Djenga, Like you're going to pull a piece out
here and put this in here. Now, rotation's gonna go
this way and this way, and players who haven't played
together are playing together more, it gets really really difficult.
And it's not like you saw the guys come back
(10:15):
tonight and all have incredible nights. Like Garland only had
ten points and didn't shoot very well.
Speaker 3 (10:19):
But he had four thousand in the first half.
Speaker 1 (10:21):
Right, Like it's not but just having him back, right,
your rotations were better. Absolutely, Mobiley had a huge game.
He was eighteen and thirteen. Hunter had eight and five
off the bench, like they were. This is back to
the Cavaliers team that ran roughshod over the East or
in the season, and sometimes it's as simple as well,
the team that is more talented, got healthy, got their
guys back, and they win a game.
Speaker 3 (10:43):
Yeah, because that's that's the truth.
Speaker 4 (10:44):
The Calves are more talented than the Pacers on paper,
and today they just kind of like went out there
and showed it immediately. I think it was eleven zero
to start the game, and Indiana never really got back
into it. Maybe at one point they brought it with
the seven or eight, but the Cavaliers were never worried.
You could tell that they came out like you said,
(11:05):
we got our team back.
Speaker 3 (11:06):
What do we have to worry about?
Speaker 4 (11:07):
We lost the last two games because we didn't have
our team and it wasn't one piece of the puzzle,
it was three, with one of them being a big
defensive part of our game plan and without Darius Garland.
Like it's fine, you still have Donovan Mitchell, but Darius
Garland is there to move the ball to give you
a different look. With Darius Garland there, Donovan Mitchell has
more open shots, which is probably what he didn't have
(11:29):
in games one and two. I don't know if they're
fully healthy or did they throw them out there because
they had to win game three, that's the question.
Speaker 1 (11:41):
You know, I would be with you on that if
I didn't see that. Mobley played thirty five minutes, Scarland
played twenty five minutes, and coming back and off the bench,
Hunter played twenty one minutes. So these guys played enough.
It would be one if they came out and played
ten minutes each, it would be more the mental boost.
But they were able to come back and play close
to their close to what they had done before. And
(12:02):
and look and that's hey, we're gonna keep you out
one more game, and then we're gonna could keep them
out right no, and bring you back for this one
right with down one Oh at home. Boy, it's really
tough to not say. I'm saying, these guys got to
come back for game too, We got to square this
thing going back to Indiana. But instead, okay, wait one
more game, and now they're back and playing close to
what their normal minutes are.
Speaker 4 (12:21):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, you're probably You're probably right, And that's
what I hope, because you don't want to see any
team lose because they didn't have their full squad, and
I'm sure even the Pacers it's like, no, we want
to beat you we want to beat your entire team.
Speaker 3 (12:32):
We don't want to.
Speaker 1 (12:32):
Beat Honestly, I don't care if Tatum doesn't play, if
Brown doesn't play, doesn't matter. No, we get to the
They still have the Eastern Conference Finals, whether they play
or not. Like if Tatum gets a real important phone
call them all before the game. Hey, guys, I gotta
take this call and he doesn't bottom fire, fine with it.
I'm fine, yeah, absolutely, okay.
Speaker 3 (12:47):
Yeah you're good. Take another day off, Jason, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (12:50):
Yeah, I'm okay.
Speaker 4 (12:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (12:52):
Time.
Speaker 1 (12:52):
Hey, he needs your he needs your motion support. Yeah,
just sit there, talk to me at a really important
phone call. I don't know what it is.
Speaker 3 (12:57):
Man, Chris stops. You don't look good. You just did
out this one.
Speaker 1 (13:00):
Now the guy to talk about here in this game,
just for a couple of minutes, because he has way
too many games like this for the for the level
of player he is. Tyre's Halliburton can't score four points
in a game. He can't take eight shots.
Speaker 4 (13:13):
He takes six in the first half, Jason only two
in the second half.
Speaker 1 (13:19):
He can't he has too many. Not that it's all
the time now, but we said in the last game
he had four shots through three quarters. Now he had
a good he had a big fourth quarter, and he
stepped up and he got involved and they won the
game and he had the big game winning shot. But
he has too many games where I see and go
it's like he's not even trying to get in the game, right,
And this is your number one player, number one creator
(13:40):
and scorer, and it's it's one thing if okay, he's
two for fourteen, two for sixteen, right and not his night.
All right, I get it, and at the end you
want to do something different. But when you're two for eight,
it's kind of like when the way lamar Odom used
to play for the Lakers, and he would have games
where I would say, how is lamar Odom three for
five from the floor tonight? Yes, he's coming off the bench,
he's a six man, he's playing twenty nine minutes, he's
(14:03):
three for four, And he would say things like, yeah,
I couldn't get in the games. I couldn't get to him.
And it's like, no, you didn't try to get in
the game. Trying to get in the game is shooting
three for eleven, three for twelve. I couldn't get I
couldn't find my stroke. But Halibert, when you're the number
one guy, you can't score four point, you can't go
two for eight from the floor like that, Like your
offense is not going anywhere in games where you don't
do it. And he has way too many games like.
Speaker 3 (14:24):
This, he really does.
Speaker 4 (14:25):
Taking two shots in the second half is a crime
when you are the number one scorer on a team
that does score by committee.
Speaker 3 (14:33):
But you need to lead this committee if you're not
going for it. I feel like that's the vibe.
Speaker 4 (14:38):
It's like if you look at that, just the stat line,
you're like, did you even try?
Speaker 3 (14:42):
Did you get hurt? Did you get out of the game?
What happened? No?
Speaker 1 (14:44):
No, I hit refresh, I hit refreshed. Okay, I saw
your minutes play. No no, no, I came out.
Speaker 3 (14:48):
It came up. It makes it makes no sense. It's bad.
It does. It's a bad look on him. It's a
bad look on him.
Speaker 4 (14:55):
After we just saw him hit game winners, that beautiful
misfree throat gets.
Speaker 3 (14:58):
His own rebound, probably a lane violation, but he hits
the game winner back to back games like that, So you're.
Speaker 4 (15:04):
Just kind of like, this is not okay, this is
not you cannot lead your team like this.
Speaker 3 (15:09):
It's the playoffs, it is not the regular season.
Speaker 1 (15:11):
Jason Smith, Monte Bologno's Fox Sports Radio, Twitter at how
about a fresca at Monte Bologno's coming up next? We
got more big stuff out of the NBA. I tell
you the one big worry I have for the Knicks tomorrow, seriously,
a big worry I have. Plus wait to hear what
Lebron James said about whose fault it was that the
Lakers lost to the Tea Wolves. That's next right here,
(15:34):
Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (15:36):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (15:46):
It's nineties night here on Fox Sports Radio. You know
certain songs take you back to a certain time in
your life, Montre, Yeah, this takes I don't know why,
but this takes me back to college Happy Hour on Fridays.
Nice when I hit that, Like when I go to
Happy Hour at four and at like eight o'clock, I'm done,
(16:07):
and I'm like, but tonight we got this party. No, guys,
I'm done. I'm done. And this song was popular, you know,
in the late eighties, early nineties. I'm like, no, guys,
I've been. I've been to Sutter since four. I'm done.
I mean maybe if I go to sleep now, I
can wake up at like one and rally for a
couple hours. But I'm I'm done, and this song just
brings me back to that. Like walking back, I going,
(16:30):
I'm cooked. I've just cooked. Nothing I can do I've cooked.
Speaker 3 (16:34):
I mean, my college day has had a lot.
Speaker 4 (16:37):
Of pit Bull songs, you know, Okay, leaving downtown Fullerton,
you know, okay, leaving to go to the back to
the Storty House.
Speaker 1 (16:44):
Did you run to college at the hotel I'm the moto, Yes, yes.
Speaker 3 (16:49):
Yeah, you know.
Speaker 4 (16:50):
So whenever I hear a pit Bull song, I feel
like I'm back in like college with my Storty sisters.
Speaker 1 (16:55):
Okay, yeah, nice Pitbull the official official five. Okay, I'm
very good. Where was your sorority? Were you a kind
of think what we used to call all the different
sorites attorneys at Syracuse?
Speaker 4 (17:10):
Yea kyo, Okay, we were right next to downtown Fullerton.
Speaker 1 (17:14):
Oh nice, easy to walk home when you needed to
walking home is on? I know people that would pledge
fraternities because it was a shorter walk, like I wanted
to be, Like I know a dude who went went
like there were two houses, Pika, which was the house
everybody thought I was going to rush. It was all
(17:35):
people like me, like people that were loud mouthed and
like to talk and would upset people now and again
right like that was my house. I'm gonna try Pika,
and I'm like no, and I never I just never
was a fraternity guy. And so there was Pika, which
was close to where the bars were, and there was
Sigma Kai, which was well respected you know Friday, but
it was a little bit further away. And I know what,
(17:58):
just yeah, I'm going to Pika because I can't walk
all the way back to sign Makai from Marshall Street.
It's too it's too far, it's too fi. I can't
do it. I can't do it.
Speaker 3 (18:07):
I don't respect that.
Speaker 1 (18:08):
I said, But dude, aren't you gonna have parties at
your house like you're gonna have You're gonna parties at
your head? No? No, not the first couple of years
or there's no. I can't do it. So I know
people that it's like yeah, no, too far away from
the boy can't do it.
Speaker 3 (18:19):
That is so funny.
Speaker 4 (18:21):
Yeah, we we didn't have like a sorority row like
in other schools, but we were very close to another sorority,
Gammified Beta, and we didn't like them exactly.
Speaker 3 (18:33):
We t be their their house. Why are you whispering
because I don't know we TV their house.
Speaker 1 (18:38):
You were in college fifteen years ago. I think you're fine.
I think it's okay. I think people know that we TV.
Speaker 3 (18:42):
We did that. I knew that I'm.
Speaker 1 (18:44):
Gonna go kick her ass. Kick her ass. Now, let's
go to Fox.
Speaker 4 (18:49):
One of the Knights that they had their like formal
dance in La TV their house.
Speaker 1 (18:53):
Wow.
Speaker 4 (18:54):
But they were even closer to downtown Floorton than we were.
But we were the only two like sorty houses near
each other. Every that else was kind of you know,
not far, but we weren't walking distance. Yeah, but then
we had the guys for the most part. All of
the houses are fort underrated amazing.
Speaker 1 (19:11):
Well, and the thing is you talk about walking, like
you're talking about walking in downtown Fullerton. Were at night?
Oh it's chili at sixty eight. Yeah, Like I'm talking
about Syracuse where it's zero degree. No, I'm not going
any further than I absolutely have to.
Speaker 3 (19:24):
Oh, you know, very different life. Absolutely.
Speaker 1 (19:26):
You ever see like what was what was that Frostburg?
You know this? What was the what was the Tarantino
movie where uh, Walton Goggins and Lawrence Fishburn It was
in the Old West and they were uh and they
all met up in the in the one big bar
at the end and there was a big shootout. What
was that Hatefully eight? Hatefully Well? No, no, no, no, no, no,
(19:48):
that was that was Samahayak in the in the Twister
Twister on a show hateful that was? That was a
show No Hateful eight where they you know, they take
like this this horse you're on carriage through incredible amounts
of snow from one bar to the next, Like that's
what Syracuse was. I bet I'm not going through all
of that just to get that. Donam's say, yeah.
Speaker 3 (20:10):
I hear stories like that, and I'm like, no, I
don't believe that. I don't believe that. I don't even
know what that means. What do you mean it's thirty degrees?
Speaker 1 (20:18):
What?
Speaker 3 (20:20):
What?
Speaker 6 (20:21):
What?
Speaker 1 (20:22):
My daughter says the same thing when she says she's
thinking about she's got a couple of years ago, but
she's thinking about colleges, and she's thinking about oh NYU
or Boston University. I said, listen, I said, let me
tell you something, right you, The winter is cold. I know, Daddy.
I said, yes, We've been back to New York or
Michigan for a week right at Christmas time, different times,
different and it's okay. We're back there for a week
(20:45):
and the cold is okay. But from the beginning of
December until April, it's zero degrees every day. You're not
going to want to leave your room and walk to
clos I'm telling you. She's like, nah, no, no, I'm like,
just trust me, trust me that I'm your dad, and
I know this because I was here. You're gonna love
(21:06):
the fall. Oh, the fall is so great, it's so nice.
These colors are great. Yeah, colors are great. Yeah, it's great.
Speaker 4 (21:11):
Then right before first snow, she'll like the first one,
the first drop of snow, She'll like that.
Speaker 1 (21:15):
Yeah. And then she'll fly back for the winter and.
Speaker 2 (21:16):
Go I don't want to go back, it's too cold.
Speaker 1 (21:19):
She's gonna Georgetown. Are you gonna transfer? Not going to Georgetown?
Speaker 3 (21:23):
She's gonna veto. Oh yeah, hard veto?
Speaker 1 (21:26):
Yeah, because well me Syracuse. I said, listen, you could
go anywhere. Each Pam and I both have one veto.
I'm Syracuse, she's Michigan. I said, you got two vetos,
Georgetown and Ohio State, and that's it. And now she's
gone so far that when someone asked her, hey, you
starting to look at school, she goes, yeah, Georgetown, just
because she knows I'm there. I'm like, yeah, who's gonna
pay for that? I'm not paying for Georgetown. Yeah, you
(21:47):
can find the money, go to Georgetown, and then I
won't talk to you for four years. So that's how
that's how it's gonna go. You want to go to George? Wait,
not starts recruiting. Ewing shows up at my house, knocks
on the door. I opened the door and I just
see somebody's up to his chest because he's over the
top of the door front. I'm sorry, who's here?
Speaker 6 (22:06):
Is?
Speaker 1 (22:08):
So Georgetown is out Ohio? Uh So we'll have more
on the NBA game. The last NBA game of the
night going on right now. We had the Cavaliers beating
the Pacers. Broke down that a few minutes ago Thunder
lead the Nuggets ninety five ninety two just under six
minutes to go in the fourth quarter. Monsie, we'll have
more on this than a few minutes in What's Trending,
(22:29):
but we got to spend some time on Lebron James
made a comment on a podcast yesterday that is starting
to gain a lot of attention, and I completely understand why.
He was asked about the loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves
and what it meant, do you know him and Luca
not being able to win and get out of the
(22:49):
first round, And when the question was posted to Lebron
that way, he had a really interesting response.
Speaker 5 (22:56):
How does kind of these like media arratives enter your
friend of mine at this time? You know, like, for example,
because it's the Lakers, because it's you and Luca, It's
like it's.
Speaker 1 (23:07):
All about how did the Lakers lose?
Speaker 6 (23:09):
This?
Speaker 3 (23:09):
Seriously?
Speaker 5 (23:10):
Really like what happened here is Minnesota is a hell
of a team and they won the serious Like, how
do you deal with some of that when you try
to process them?
Speaker 6 (23:17):
Yeah, for me, I've definitely learned over the years that
teams win championships and you know, if never is all.
Speaker 1 (23:28):
The way, Oh yeah, teams win championships, right, he went
on to say, and that was a future Lakers head
coach Steve Nash by the way, on the podcast, he
went on to say, people forget there's eight other guys
on the floor. Right, Teams win championships. It's like Lebron
James uses whatever his status is when it's convenient for him, right,
(23:50):
But when they lose, it's, oh, look at everybody else.
When the number one rule in sports is we when
you win, it's I whin you lose? Yes, Luke and
I as the leaders of this team, we didn't get
it done. We have to do other stuff next year.
But wow, he is so quick to pass the buck
and say, other guys out there teams win championships. Whoa okay?
So so why are you why okay? Why are you
(24:11):
taking fifty five million dollars a year next year when
that screws the Lakers from being able to pay more money?
How about you take some less money. How about you
take ten million dollars a year? How about you do
you do something where that helps the Lakers get more
play If you need a team to win championships, take
let no, no, I'm never gonna take less money because I'm Lebron.
I can't do I can't take less than fifty two
million dollars next year. I'm Lebron, So do something for
(24:33):
your team. But it's only when it's convenient for him.
He'd he pay, he passes the bucket. Backs said, whoa, whoa,
whoa whoa not not me? Teams win championships. Oh all right, right, okay,
got it. You don't use your influence to get players
in try to run. You haven't done that, so okay.
So that's what I would say. If I was a Lakers,
I would say, okay, Lebron, Yeah, we need to put
some guys around you. How much you take some less money?
How about you do that because other players have done
(24:55):
that and win championships and their legacy. Unless you don't care,
Unless you don't care, so put your where your mouth
is that if teams win championships.
Speaker 3 (25:02):
He he's so it's just like knock, knock knock? Are
you there? Do you realize how you come off? You
are Lebron James and the reason so many people criticize
you is because of that. What do you what are
you talking about?
Speaker 4 (25:19):
How is it not on you? And Luca it's absolutely
you and Luka Bancic. He sometimes like I don't hate
Lebron like he does it. I feel like he gets
under people's skin more than he does my skin. No
right now, because because Lebron, what the hell are you saying?
What do you mean? You are not a team player.
(25:39):
I feel like people don't want to come play with
you because the blame goes on them when something goes wrong,
and when it goes right, you take a lot of
the credit for it. Yeah, you know what, you should
take way less money to be on the Lakers so
that they can surround you with better players so that
you you do have a full team. You don't need
Here's what crazy. It's like, you know, he doesn't need
another dollar. He's like, truly, truly, if he made no
(26:00):
more money, he his kids, grandkids, great grandkids, they're all fine.
They are all fine. You truly do not need another dollar.
But you have this ego in this pride that does
not make sense when it comes to team basketball. I
just started reading Phil Jackson's Eleven Rings, his book, and
he is so big on like it's a team sport
(26:23):
and like unless everybody buys in that, it's not about me,
that it's about the team.
Speaker 3 (26:28):
It's not gonna work. And here we see Lebron where
it's like it's not working because I don't believe that
you're a team guy.
Speaker 4 (26:35):
I truly don't see that because of the decisions you make,
not only financially when it comes to the Lakers, but
saying like, oh, I'm not gonna answer that because my
boy ad answered.
Speaker 3 (26:46):
That and he got traded. Yeah, like always has something
to say. There is always something as a yeah, but yeah,
but no, dude, just own up to it. You do
you want to be the leader or do you not?
You can't have it both ways.
Speaker 1 (27:01):
Well, he goes from I'm Lebron James drafting my kid,
you're giving him this contract?
Speaker 2 (27:06):
You do it too.
Speaker 1 (27:07):
Now, well, I'm just Lebron.
Speaker 3 (27:08):
I'm just Lebron.
Speaker 1 (27:09):
I'm just Lebron.
Speaker 3 (27:09):
I just can't talk to the front office.
Speaker 1 (27:11):
It's an accordion. It's a big accordion like I'm Lebron
James or I'm only Lebron.
Speaker 4 (27:15):
And it's like, no, it can't be both. It can't
be both. And the fact that he said that it
really sucks to be his teammate. It sucks to hear
if I'm any including Luca, I'm like, bro, what no,
because Luca doesn't come off that way. Luca will take
the responsibility at least we've kind of seen that throughout
his career with MAVs. I always felt like he took
responsibility when the MAVs loss, like I gotta do better.
Speaker 3 (27:37):
That has come out of Luca's mouth multiple times. Have
we heard Lebron say I gotta be better in twenty years?
Speaker 1 (27:45):
Well, to his defense, he is really really, really really good.
But I get what you're saying.
Speaker 4 (27:49):
No one's denying how good he is. No one is
denying it, but it's you can't have it both ways.
Like you just said the accordion. That's a great example.
You can't have it both ways.
Speaker 3 (27:59):
And this is why he's so critiqued.
Speaker 4 (28:02):
This is why so many people are like, you're not
the goat because this mentality doesn't work with the goat.
Speaker 3 (28:07):
Michael Jordan wouldn't think like this.
Speaker 4 (28:09):
You were budding up with Anthony Edwards after what Game
two three, laughing on the sideline Kobe Bryant was mad
being up to zero. Yeah, Like it's just different. It
is night and day. It is night and day. With
that personality, and it's just like if he if he
was only one way, okay, but the fact that he
plays it both ways, it's what's annoying.
Speaker 2 (28:28):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (28:28):
And also and that you can kind of see how
the Lakers are starting to move away from him trying.
You know, he was he and Anthony Davis and Clutch Sports.
We're coming in, We're running things. Here's the players we want,
here's how we can win. Okay, Lebron, you kind of
suck as a GM. And the trade of Anthony Davis was, Okay,
(28:49):
here's your big ally is now gone. We trade for Luca.
Luca's the future of the team. What do we need
to get Luca? And now you see Lebron when he talks,
it's more like, I'm just employee number twenty three, Right,
That's what I am. Now you don't ask me because
he knows that it's not that the Lakers are freezing
him out, but his influence over the organization that's not
(29:11):
there anymore. And so Lebron is kind of on the
outside of the inner circle where now, okay, we are
now going to retool this team where he's not gonna
not come back next year, right, Like I know, we
talked about retiring.
Speaker 3 (29:23):
But he's not that he's gonna play with Bryce.
Speaker 1 (29:25):
Look and the and the and the Lakers are gonna say,
all right, we don't want to make such a big change. Now,
we only had Lebron and Luca for three months. Look
at what we did in the regular season. No, clearly
you weren't there in the playoffs. But we get a
big for Luca to be able to run run the
floor with Uh, that's what we need. Okay, we're gonna
see how Luca and Lebron work next year. Now next year,
at this time, that's a different conversation, and Lebron is
(29:47):
potentially finishing his career someplace else other than Los Angeles.
He's going back to Cleveland to finish. Hey, guys, I'm
coming home, guys, or I'm gonna go to New York.
I always wanted to play at MSG. It's awesome, But like,
if it doesn't work this year and then suddenly, okay,
we had a whole year plus down with Lebron and Luca,
it's gonna be something different and Lebron gets pushed out
next year. He got the player option for fifty million
(30:09):
this year, so he's not gonna say no, but after
this year, like that's gonna be it this that that's
where if it doesn't work this year, next year, completely
different conversation.
Speaker 4 (30:17):
There's no I have a hard time believing that any
other team, maybe besides the Calves, right because he would
go home to Cleveland. How any other team would take
Lebron at this point, There's no way.
Speaker 1 (30:30):
He is only a couple of teams. There's only a
couple of like if if depending on the Calves, if
they don't ask, it's the only one they would say,
and he would go home. Hey, I and I could
be that guy. Nicks might be another team that if
we're not, maybe we need Lebron to come in. Yeah,
I would want to. I want to play there. I
can see that work a couple of times. I could see. No,
I'd rather have you, honest, but like, but I I
(30:51):
could see both those because those are two inches. He
wants to scratch again, going home or.
Speaker 3 (30:55):
Playing in Madison Square season scratch.
Speaker 1 (30:58):
He's like, Ivy, no, oh yeah it yes, but those
are the places I can see. Speaking of scratch itches,
let's find out what's going on right now with what's trending.
I know you're keeping your eye on like seven different
games right now, MASI really.
Speaker 3 (31:11):
Am, I really am.
Speaker 4 (31:13):
This NBA game is going down to the wire. Three
minutes to go. Thunder Nuggets tied at ninety seven. Nikola
Jokic zero of ten from the three point line, Jason
six of twenty one from the field, sixteen points, fifteen rebounds,
five assists.
Speaker 3 (31:31):
But it's a tie.
Speaker 4 (31:32):
Game because Aaron Gordon has seventeen points, Michael Porter Junior
has eighteen points, Jamal Murray has twenty three points, and
Okase just missed the shot. Denver has the ball again.
Three minutes to go and it's a tie game. We'll
see how it ends. It's in Denver, a series tied
at one apiece. The Cavaliers did beat the Pacers one
twenty six to one oh four Donovan Mitchell forty three
(31:52):
points and nine rebounds.
Speaker 3 (31:54):
Indiana leads that series zoh two to one.
Speaker 4 (31:56):
Still in baseball, a lot of scoring between the Dodgers
and the Diamondbacks.
Speaker 3 (32:01):
In fact, Ludes Gurriel.
Speaker 4 (32:03):
Junior did hit a grand slam for the Diamondbacks, who
are beating the Dodgers eleven to ten.
Speaker 3 (32:07):
It's the top of the ninth inning in Arizona.
Speaker 4 (32:09):
Jason Dominguez has hit three home runs for the Yankees,
including a grand Slam, and they are just crushing the A's.
It's ten to one, bottom of the ninth inning about
to start. In Sacramento, the Orioles, Hey, they snapped their
losing streak. They had lost five in a row. But
they beat the Angels four to one, and the Blue
Jays top the Mariners six to three. In the NHL,
all Jets against the Stars for zero.
Speaker 3 (32:32):
The final score.
Speaker 1 (32:33):
It's not the Jets that Jets offense. How did Justin
Fields do tonight? Midst mid we scored for we had
two safeties 's how the Jets?
Speaker 3 (32:42):
Exactly, Yeah, it's exactly it. Series is tight.
Speaker 4 (32:44):
I went a piece and then Brad Marshan hit the
game winner for the Panthers earlier today against the aple Leafs.
He wanted an overtime five to four. Toronto leads that
series two to one. Coach, So going down to the
wire here in the NBA, zero of ten from the
three point line for Nicola Jokicic.
Speaker 1 (32:58):
Zero of ten And to let you know what's happening
right now in Arizona, the Dodgers were trailing eleven to
eight going to the top of the ninth inning. It
was gonna be a big win for the Diamondbacks. It
is now eleven eleven and the Dodgers have a runner
at first, still nobody out. In the top of the
(33:19):
ninth thinning.
Speaker 3 (33:20):
Did that happen?
Speaker 1 (33:21):
Double by Key k a Hernandez makes it eleven ten.
Max Mounsey singles to write to bring in Key k Hernandez.
Ginkle not having a He is just getting hit all
over the ballpark tonight. Ginkle is giving up. He's like
the exit vlos on his The last three batters have
to be like five hundred miles an hour. The Dodgers
(33:41):
now have three in the ninth nobody out. They are
still batting. Wow, this is Max Monsey man. I good, Yeah,
I know, who knew?
Speaker 2 (33:50):
It?
Speaker 1 (33:50):
Just had to have glasses, That's what glass. Just had
to have glasses. Uh As. We'll have more on this
game coming up next. We got a big ending coming
ninety nine to ninety seven Denver with the lead over
Clahoma City with two minutes left to go. And we
have an NFL story that mercifully has come to an end.
We got a lot of stuff. We're dealing with here
on a big Friday night, Happy Friday. That's next Jason's Mare,
(34:11):
The Monte Bolognos Fox Sports.
Speaker 2 (34:13):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific.
Speaker 1 (34:21):
Fox Sports Radio. The Jason Smith Show with Monte Bologno's
in for Mike Harmon, and we are headed to over time.
A desperation three from Nikola Jokicic at the buzzer, h's
the far rim the Thunder, and the Nuggets will go
to overtime. Tied at one oh two apiece SGA missing
(34:43):
a short runner in the lane with two and a
half seconds left to go, The Nuggets call time out
get last shot uh to Jokic, which not a great look,
but we've seen Yokic make those shots in the past.
But I'll tell you what. The big hero again a
three point lead for Oklahoma City and it's Aaron Gordon
(35:04):
who makes another three from Jamal Murray with twenty seven
seconds left to go that saves the Nuggets again and
now we head to overtime.
Speaker 4 (35:13):
Can I just say I am really happy to see
Aaron Gordon bawling out against the Nuggets because I swear
I was like, he killed the Clippers and then he's
gonna suck against the thunder.
Speaker 3 (35:24):
It's what I was expecting. So he really was.
Speaker 1 (35:26):
So you're happy he continues to play. Well, Okay, I'm happy.
Speaker 4 (35:30):
It wasn't just against the Clippers, you know what I'm saying.
So that shot was nuts. He is four of six
from the three point line. He has been so good
throughout these playoffs for the Nuggets.
Speaker 1 (35:41):
Yeah, speaking is so good. Oh my god. Okay, we
have to get We have two incredible games coming right now. So,
as we told you a few minutes ago, the Dodgers
go into the top of the ninth in against the
Diamondbacks trailing eleven to eight. There are still no outs
in the top of the ninth in for the Dodgers,
And if I had a phone, I would call Tory
(36:03):
Lavello and say, hey, dude, it ain't Kevin Ginkles night.
You needed to get him out of that game earlier.
Get him out. Every single ball that was hit off
him at an exit v LO of like one hundred
and twenty miles an hour, singles doubles the Dodgers. The
Dodgers tie the game. At eleven, they finally change pitchers
(36:24):
and show hey, Otani with a home run and a
bat flip, a three run jack to make it a
fourteen eleven lead, and Otani batflips. You knew it was
gone off the bat. He is laughing hysterically in the
dugout right now the Dodgers. This is an incredible ninth inning.
They now lead the Diamondbacks fourteen eleven. And look, I've
(36:46):
seen Otani make big play, make big hits before, but
that's like one of the one of the most full
of emotion plays. I don't know that I've seen him
batflip like that before with the Dodgers.
Speaker 2 (36:58):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (36:58):
I've never seen that.
Speaker 3 (37:00):
I haven't either.
Speaker 4 (37:01):
I maybe he just has a new side to him
now that he's a daddy.
Speaker 1 (37:04):
Oh man, now I bat flip. I have some highlights
on YouTube. I want my kids to see something in
a back I'm.
Speaker 3 (37:11):
A backflip now.
Speaker 1 (37:12):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (37:12):
Yeah, I've never seen him react like that, but he
had a little bit of a slump coming out of
being a daddy, and now he's.
Speaker 3 (37:18):
Like picking it up. So it's like, are you surprised, No,
not at all.
Speaker 1 (37:24):
No, Like this is one of those games where if
all of a sudden, the Diamondbacks going like a ten
game losing streak, like, I wouldn't blame them, right because
this is one this season could be done after that,
I mean crushing, this is a This is what in baseball. Yes,
it's always about the next day. In baseball, it's always
about coming back. But sometimes some losses, not all losses
are created equal, and this is one of those where
(37:46):
it's in the win column. We'll go to the ninth inning.
I got this in the win guy right, put it.
I'm sorry I put it in, but can you take
it up? Nope, already got in the wind Comb already there,
and and with nobody out, the Dodgers put up six
runs and done. They couldn't make couldn't They just every
single pitch like not even waiting in the act bat
like they were just raking balls off a ginkle, two
doubles down the line, Otani after the pitching change, a
(38:10):
home run, and the bat flips like I've never seen
that before. Diamondbacks. Man, this is where this is where
if dig Vital was doing the game, he goes, oh,
get a t o toy Levello, get a timeout says, over,
get it time. This this is incredible. Now the Dodgers
finally go out in the top of the ninth inning,
so we go to the bottom of knines. But now
it's a three run lead for LA and we've just
(38:32):
started overtime the Thunder and the Nuggets. The Nuggets have
jumped out to a one oh seven, one oh two
lead just under four minutes to go in overtime. It's
been a big first minute for the Nuggets. And look,
generally overtime games follow one to two pass in the playoffs,
nobody scores like the first two minutes, or you get
somebody jumping out to a lead early, and this has
(38:54):
been the Nuggets. Jokic makes a big shot. Then Michael
Porter Junior, who I believe is wearing shoulder pads, hits
a big three to give him a one oh seven
one oh two. He's got that big bandage on it
like Madonna. Yeah, he hits Vogue vote. So it is
a five point lead for the Nuggets and they have
the ball three and a half to go in over
ten And isn't.
Speaker 4 (39:14):
It like uh, typically the first team to score in
overtime tends to win.
Speaker 3 (39:19):
Is that usually like they say, like or like Lawler's law,
first to reach one hundred. Yes, Ralph Yaller, you know,
I feel like with overtime.
Speaker 4 (39:26):
Usually the first team to score. And they did get
five quick points. It's not over three minutes still in overtime,
but it does look like Denver has a different gear
right now for overtime.
Speaker 1 (39:36):
Yeah, I don't blame him. And look, this is playing
at home and playing in the mile high air. One
o nine, one oh two. Jamal Murray just goes coast
to coast for a bucket all of a sudden. Looks
like the Nuggets could be taken a two games to
one lead, and no one's saying what a bad move
it was to fire there hat all of a sudden,
that's out the window.
Speaker 4 (39:55):
They've got a feel not just good because of that,
but Nicola Jokic being seven of twenty four from the field's.
Speaker 1 (40:01):
And everybody else is making.
Speaker 3 (40:03):
Except Tim He's zero of ten.
Speaker 1 (40:05):
No for e love ease that last one at the
end of regulation.
Speaker 3 (40:07):
Well, ESPN is messing up here on their stats.
Speaker 1 (40:11):
Might have been standing on the line, phone, might have
been standing on the line.
Speaker 3 (40:13):
Maybe you're right about that.
Speaker 4 (40:15):
Unbelievable that they may pull this off with Yokich not
really performing the way we expected.
Speaker 1 (40:21):
Nicely done, Mary Mack vote. We have more on this
incredible overtime game. More the Dodger game coming up next,
as well as other big stuff from the NBA
