Speaker 2 (00:23):
If you're listening to Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
Hello, welcome inside our three The Jason Smith Show with
my base friend Mike Harmon live for the Fox Sports
Radio Studios. Well, we'll have more on the big night
and big weekend. Week one of the NFL is here.
We've had two great games to start. The Chargers announced
that hey, we're just as good as Jason Smith thinks

(00:51):
we are, as they beat the Chiefs twenty seven to
twenty one. But we have a big week two in
college football headlined by Michigan in Alabama, potentially a Charlotte
upset over North Carolina.

Speaker 3 (01:04):
Oh.

Speaker 1 (01:04):
Nobody better to break it all down with than longtime
friend of the show, owner, proprietor publisher Grand Pooba of
College Footballnews dot Com. You're one stop shopping for everything
college football, all the picks, all the prognostications, all the analysis.
He's on Twitter at Pete feutech. It is Pete Fewtack,

(01:26):
a man who picks every NFL game with the final
score of twenty four to twenty Pete, welcome, Am I wrong?
What's up?

Speaker 4 (01:35):
Pete is not wrong? You know, every game is kind
of twenty four to twenty at least so far. I
mean tonight's is a little, but basically every game, you know,
one way or another, it's gonna be a four point games.
Unlike by our college world where you said it's a
big week at games. If you're a Michigan fan, it
is everywhere else.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
I don't know, Pete. I think Michigan fans, Oklahoma fan,
North Carolina fans are nervous, Texas fans are nervous. Alabama
fans are nervous. I think there's a lot of nerves
going on here going into the games this weekend.

Speaker 4 (02:08):
Yeah, well that's what that's what Charlotte and ULM and
things like that for. But look, we all you liked
last week. I like last week. We all like last week.
But man, just teams look like they could have used
that tune up or two like this should be the week.
I get it because all the world cares about the
NFL right now. Uh, but if that these two weeks

(02:30):
should be flipped where you should, Like arch Manning needed
a week just to kind of get his feet wet
a living. How dumb you have to be to schedule
your first game of the season in Columbus, Ohio? Like,
how dumb do you have to be here? You know,
to go Florida State in Tallahassee. You that's what you're
scheduled Louisiana Monroe for you know, central, central, directional cupcake

(02:54):
state or something like. You need these tune up games.
And you could see from week one, ask how off
some of these teams are because the offenses didn't work
except for your beloved guy, your quarterback in Michigan who
threw for way more yards than any quarterback did last
year for the Wolverine.

Speaker 1 (03:12):
All right, now we'll get to Michigan in a second.
But you bring up arch Manning, who needed a week
and now he's got three weeks before his next big test.
Where are you? You've had a few days, let the
dust settle and see how we played, and get and
get to see your level of concern for Arch Manning
after Week one against Ohio State, where is.

Speaker 4 (03:28):
It absolute zero? He's going to be a billionaire, He's
gonna be the number one pick in the draft. He's Manning,
He'll be just five books. It's completely forgotten in college sports.
Is It isn't just the players. It isn't just the
uniforms or the nil money or the guys you can get.
It's the ability to go out there and say, Okay,
we just lost our superstar defensive coordinator to Penn State.

(03:50):
We're going to get Matt Patricia to be our defensive coordinator.
You know, that guy could should be in the NFL.
He's probably better coach than about one hundred other college
football coaches. And that's your defensive coordinator. You give that
dude and all those talented NFL caliber players, you know,
a few months to prepare for you know, how to

(04:10):
make Arch Fanning's life miserable, and they're gonna do it.

Speaker 1 (04:13):
So that was a.

Speaker 4 (04:14):
Fantastic performance by the Ohio State defense. So it was
a bad day. Yes, Manning missed some throws that were there,
But again, get week one. We all forget you just
how good these guys are. But you don't get the
four preseason games, and you only get about a third
of the practice in prep time that the NFL's guys do.
So of course they're going to be a little rocky

(04:35):
right out of the gate.

Speaker 3 (04:36):
Underwood two fifty one and a score in the first game.
Material on the other side waiting for him. Oklahoma five
point favorite forty four, a low over under expected some
defense to be played here, Pete. But what do you
think of Michigan and their title of finally having that quarterback?
You know, even though they won a national title, that
guy got no credit for it.

Speaker 4 (04:57):
I was just gonna say, day day mccartya. He didn't vote,
you know, almost like he knew it was coming sometimes,
you know, he was that good. But like I'm sorry,
I'm sorry too too soon. But no, I know went
to the guy. I mean, he's he's going to be
the guy. I mean, let's see what happens this week.
You speak of a great defensive mind. This is when

(05:18):
we need to see Brent Venables in that Oklahoma thing
kick in because last year, bad year. They've had two
losing seasons in the last three. All the receivers were hurt.
Last season. It just was a bad down year, and wow,
do they need this because Michigan can lose and they'll
see the rest of the schedule is not a breeze.
But it's not bad, you know, for being a Big

(05:40):
ten school. If they win this, they're not gonna lose
three games the rest of the way and they're gonna
they just put him in the College FOTBA playoffs. They're
gonna be ten and two if they can beat Oklahoma
at Oklahoma. If Oklahoma loses, dear god, look at that
schedule they have left. I mean, they're they're really good.
I mean, the teer's really good. Jay not from cal
Ronne backs really strong, they loaded up with the transfer portal,

(06:02):
all their receivers are healthy. This is easily the best
team yet under Brett Ventables and the best Oklahoma team
in a while. But that is a ten to two
team with a five and seven record, because wow, they
just they play everybody in the SEC after this. So
this is a must win game for the Venables era.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
Yeah, I look at it this way, Pete, I agree.
This game being in Oklahoma is the difference. I think
we're going to come out of this game Oklahoma with
a win, but feeling much better about Michigan because honestly,
Bryce Underwood looks like he's everything we thought he was
going to be. He's decisive, he's fearless in the pocket,
he delivers the football in small windows. And yes, you

(06:41):
didn't get a great opening of the Michigan playbook because
you know, this is not how they do it. They
wait until they play a team. They didn't give put
anything out there on tape for Oklahoma. But man, he
looks like he's everything they expect him to be. And
he was. He was as good as advertised. I saw
him last week. He was terrific.

Speaker 4 (06:58):
Yeah, at least for one week against team that he
should have done that again. So I mean he's still
a kid. It's just this true freshmen in his you know,
second game in this environment, and there's that spear that
you know, look what, look what we saw week one. Now,
Tallahassee was a buzzsaw for Alabama. I mean, that's like
that place was you could just tell that they were

(07:19):
ready to just unleash after you know, the horrible season
and the problems at the end of the year before
and that that was just a casthartic moment and that
place is just going crazy. You could see it in
Miami too, where they were just that crowd as much
as it could possibly be for Miami was there, uh
And just a lot of these places, the home field
advantage just turned into a thing. I think Oklahoma is

(07:40):
one of those programs where they've been so med and
they now I think Texas was number one, and there's
still the hot stuff with Manning and you know, I
think they're ready to be like, hey, we're supposed to
be the SEC team here, and I think that's a
program and a fan base that you're gonna you're gonna
see a real interesting atmosphere amore, at least I hope so.
Because again that's justin little fin outside of this game tomorrow.

Speaker 3 (08:03):
How many players on the current North Carolina rosters started
printing off dem letters.

Speaker 4 (08:12):
That was the thing about that game is you could
see it where here's Bill Belichick, the greatest pro maybe
the pros all around head coach of all time, and
all off season you could tell they had those first
fifteen ish plays right down, and all of a sudden,
North Carolina looked like they were gonna win the National
championship because each of those first pro scripted plays worked perfectly,

(08:34):
and then TCU showed up and adjusted and then bad
things happened. So looks there were two games last week
that I think everyone's kind to kind of over freak
out about, but it was really more about the other side.
When was UCLA looking awful. But Utah's just I think
they're the real deal. And HECU they got he have

(08:55):
a nine win team. You got to see that was
a team that was ticked off coming into it. They
h head coach Tunny Deck said as much afterwards. That's
a nine win team with everybody back, and they loaded
up through the transfer portal and they just played like it.
So look, North Carolina's gonna beat Charlotte with ease. But
again that was a game where an opening night they

(09:16):
needed to play Charlotte week one because if you have
seventy new players coming in, you need some time just
to get everything down, and nothing does that like, you know,
a week one game. That's why you scheduled the easy
games first, like Michigan did.

Speaker 1 (09:30):
College Footballnews dot COM's pet You Tech our guest here,
Jason Smith Mike Carbon live from the Fox Sports Radio studios. Okay, now,
speaking of level of concern, you feel great, about arch
Manning in Texas. This week, Alabama head coach Caitlin Debor said, hey,
we can still do some big things this year after
they probably had the worst loss of Week one, because wow,
that did not look like Alabama. Can Alabama still be

(09:53):
really good? Are you still stuck up on Alabama or no?

Speaker 4 (09:56):
Yeah? Of course, I mean they're still talented. I mean
I again, I keep harping on this. Ty Simpson looked
like he needed reps. He he wasn't there yet, And
it's that's why you play. You don't play these types
of games early. And usually for Alabama the defense takes
care of it. But that team, the problem is that
the talent is there. We know that the NFL is

(10:16):
about to take twenty five of their guys over the
next couple of years. They just looked, whoa. They just
there's no life there. And again that might have been
a case where Florida State was just at a whole other,
ramped up level. And again with the coordinators, it helps
when you can get gut smells on to be your
offensive coordinator, you know, and he had that thing dialed up.

(10:37):
Everyone was ultra focus. Look Thomas Cassianos, the quarterback he
wrote a couple of checks with his mouth that he
cashed because wow, he was great. He was everything at
all the smack talk to Alabama all off season. He
backed it up in a big way. That team looks fantastic.
But yeah, for the next couple of weeks, Alabama had
better just come out and win like ninety three to nothing.

(11:00):
That they can and at some point this offense has
to work. They had you know he you know, divor
is great at Presno State in Washington. They've got more
talent at Alabama. But this offense Jets not clicked yet.

Speaker 3 (11:12):
Pete the last one for you, I mean, and the
big nude kickoff forty three. The total Iowa State three
and a half point favorites over Iowa. We get this
one in week two. Let's get it on.

Speaker 4 (11:23):
Come on now, as rational. Look, you look at this game,
and I always got a quarterback. Granowski, the guy from
South Dakota at State is just an elite quarterback. He's
probably the best passer, all around playmaker that Iowa's had
a long time. Iowa State looks great offensively. This should

(11:44):
be a good back and forth battle. But look, we
really know this. It's how this is gonna work. It's
the final score is gonna be two to one because Iowa, Iowa,
they just they're not just there. Guy's gonna revert to
their old form and this get's gonna keep punting it
all the time, and someone will make a kick and
there'll be a safety or two. So it's just it's

(12:07):
it should be like a twenty seven to twenty four game.
It's gonna be tight. I think Iowa pulls this off.
It's kind of crazy, but the row team has owned
this series for a while. I think Iowa wins. But
this is a this is a big game. I always
say it wins. This going going along with all the
other big performances by the Big twelve and Week one
and probably this week that's gonna be a big big

(12:27):
boots of the conference. If I wos they could pull
this off.

Speaker 1 (12:30):
He's on Twitter at Pete feutech That is at Pete
feu Tech. Check out the website college Footballnews dot com.
You're one stop shopping for everything college football, analysis, break down, previews, predictions.
Pete is always buddy appreciated. Mana join the games. We'll
talk to you next week.

Speaker 2 (12:45):
Girl, guys see you abody be good.

Speaker 3 (12:47):
Uh see, he talked about an Iowa quarterback. He's been
on with us for a decade. He's never mentioned an
Iowa quarterback.

Speaker 1 (12:54):
The punter is usually first. And you want to know
something crazy, Okay, this is this is amazing, right Iowa.
Iowa State is the big nude kickoff. Okay, you look
at Vivid seats right now. These are all the top
twenty five games. How much you have to spend right
now for a ticket for these games? You ready? Okay?
Hit me Penn State eight dollars, Texas thirty two dollars,

(13:17):
Illinois Duke that's pretty good game twenty two dollars, Florida
State sixteen dollars, SMU fifty dollars, Indiana twenty dollars, Texas
Tech six dollars, Texas A and M twenty dollars, Ohio
State thirty dollars, Georgia thirty six dollars, Oregon twenty five dollars,
Clemson sixteen, Kentucky forty five, Tennessee forty four. Okay, these

(13:39):
are all the top to the top twenty five games, right.
Miami tickets as low as six dollars. Okay, twenty four
dollars for LSU right, all of these. You know it's
between twenty and fifty bucks. Oklahoma, you can get an
Oklahoma Michigan tickets as low as fifty seven dollars. The
biggot the ticket, the most money you have to spend
to get into a game right now is Iowa Iowa

(14:02):
State tickets available on vivid seats starting at one hundred
and thirty dollars. That's the that's the most expensive ticket,
doubling every single other home team playing at home in
a top twenty five game.

Speaker 3 (14:14):
That was awesome. Eight dollars, yeah, twelve dollars.

Speaker 1 (14:19):
Six dollars to see Miami, right, why not for Earl Belt.

Speaker 3 (14:24):
Jimmy Johnson might show up there again.

Speaker 1 (14:26):
Come on, boy, one hundred and thirty bucks to go
see Iowa Iowa State. So I have the big nude kickoff?
Is there? Man? Big nude kickoff?

Speaker 3 (14:35):
Good stuff? Man?

Speaker 1 (14:36):
Uh So there we go. There's your college football update, Pete,
giving us all the big thoughts we get back into
the NFL. Coming up next, we break down something big
out of the Chargers win over the Chase, and we
continue our big picks for Week one of the NFL.

five second Dance Party, b Man walks Foul Miles for

(16:01):
let Go the Proclaimers, taking you back to nineteen ninety
five of the Benny and June soundtrack with I'm Gonna
Be five hundred miles. I did look that up, Benny
in June. I knew that off the top of my head.
Maybe not the year, maybe not ninety five, but Benny
in June. Mid nineties. Oh, absolutely, Seannie Deppin Oh who

(16:25):
is uh, what's her name?

Speaker 3 (16:28):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (16:28):
She was in hang On, she was she was an
it girl in the nineties. She did Fried Green Tomatoes,
Mary Stuart, Mary Stuart Masterson. Yes, yes, Mary Stuart Masterson. Yeah,
Benny and June get you yeah, buddy.

Speaker 3 (16:41):
Yeah, June, is that why you named your dog Benny?

Speaker 1 (16:44):
No? No, no, true story. We named him Benny Zoe.
You know, Zoe loves David Bowie, right, David Bowie is
her favorite. But one of her best friends already has
a dog named Bowie that's like nine years old that
she's known for like five years now. It's like great,
but it's Bowie, just like Bowie, like for a Bowie
knife whatever. It was not for David Bowie. So she
a n one. Absolutely, yeah, really wanted to name Benny Bowie.

(17:07):
We said no, and then she you know, but she
also loves Elton John, so she says, oh, let's call
him Benny for Benny and the Jets. So okay. So
he's Benny for Benny and the Jets.

Speaker 3 (17:15):
There we go, taking us all the way back. Just John,
what's your dog's name?

Speaker 2 (17:23):
John?

Speaker 5 (17:23):
John?

Speaker 6 (17:24):
I like human dog names like that that just don't
make any sense for it, Phil.

Speaker 1 (17:29):
I wanted like he's like the tiniest white MAULTI pooh,
Like I want to name him something like.

Speaker 3 (17:34):
Drago or you know that makes it seem like coming
back to theaters.

Speaker 1 (17:39):
Yeah, he's Drago, but he's like, no, I tried to
make Drago happen. I so tried, and but Zoe, of course,
you know you can name him. You can name him
going Drag would be great. I'm trying to make Drago happen. No, No, No,
Benny for Benny. I'm like, okay, Benny and the Jets. Okay,
And now it's like I can't. Now it's now I
look at him and go, Yeah, Drago would have been awesome.
But okay, Drago, he's Benny Trag or like what was

(18:03):
what was the name from the uh the NBC Ubu sit.

Speaker 3 (18:07):
Ubu sit good actually good dog named him Ubu ically
done Benny and June nineteen ninety three, Oh man, from
you missed it by that much?

Speaker 1 (18:19):
Just did you want. The other day it was on
Amazon Prime instead leaving in five days, so I had
to watch it. You know, just because it's leaving in
five days doesn't mean you have to watch.

Speaker 2 (18:29):
Yes, it does, Jason, did you sit.

Speaker 3 (18:31):
Around the campfire and start doing the little Charlie Chaplin
thing like he did? And I wish you know with
the bow Tie movie.

Speaker 1 (18:37):
Here's the thing. It's a it's a thirty you know,
three year old move thirty two year old sovie at
this point, if you missed it, it's okay. No, right, like,
it's okay if you miss not.

Speaker 2 (18:48):
Just like seven was going away and I watched seven.

Speaker 1 (18:50):
Oh, you could always find seven someplace. You can always
find seven someplace. I get I'll be honest with you.
My daughter at least once a week says to me.
I know, and I can watch seven. I can watch seven.
I'm going, Oh my goodness, I told you that the
two movies that you can't unsee are seven and Midsummer.
And I'm telling you this right now because she's a

(19:11):
huge movie. But all the movies like she's my daughter
one hundred percent, like all the movies we see all
the time we talk about I'm saying I'm telling you,
you know, these two movies are really really difficult and
you can't unsee them. So yeah, but I realize I'm like, okay,
and at some point I'm just gonna say, okay, go
see it, but don't come to me after and say,
oh Dad, no no, no, no, no, no, no, no no you

(19:31):
I told you five hundred thousand times about these two movies.
You want to see, and stuff happens, you gotta own it.
So that's where I'm right now with seven and in Midsummer?

Speaker 3 (19:40):
Did she go back for seconds on Midsummer.

Speaker 1 (19:42):
She hasn't seen No, those are the too many she
hasn't seen yet, those two because she's still I'm like,
she's an adult.

Speaker 3 (19:47):
For crying out loud, Let's go sixteen.

Speaker 1 (19:49):
She's sixteen. I'm saying all them, with all the other ones,
all the big halloweens, Yeah, Friday the thirteen, Go see
all those, go see all Hey, let her hey see Hereditary.
Hereditary was I'm like okay that, oh to stop. Hereditary
was really good. Weapons Jason I said, yeah, yes, you
saw Weapons Love Weapons. I was like, yeah, weapons was.
Weapons was good again? Another movie where the first half

(20:10):
of the movie was outstanding. I got like, where are
they going to go with the second half of the movie,
And they kind of went over the top with it,
which I thought was kind of cool. But I mean,
the first half of Weapons was just such a good movie,
and I'm like, but understand, certain things you can't unsee
from these movies. All right, I'm telling you, I'm telling
you all right, Harmon still walks around screaming what's in
the box because I know he's traumatized from it still

(20:30):
thirty years later. So I just understand that's where we're at.

Speaker 3 (20:34):
Well, you'll you'll know when when I've given up on
society and the existence, because I'll just walk in with
a random box and put it down.

Speaker 1 (20:47):
Uh, sir, your wife's been trying to call you all
day I don't understand. Yeah, So while that's on Friday night,
Well that was that was the line, Oh, sir, your
wife's been trying to call you all day long, which
I guess, Well, was she really trying to call her?
Was she in the Okay? So the chargers at TJ,
the chargers put the chiefs in the box tonight twenty

(21:09):
seven to twenty one in Brazil. You know, we talked
about Mahomes and the char and and and Herbert earlier
this hour or about an hour ago, how great they were.
We'll get back into them coming up in a bit.
But I got to tell you the other thing that
stands out to me about this game. Rights as good
as Herbert was, I feel like he's back as good
as Mahomes was. I feel like this is gonna be

(21:30):
the theme stuck up on Mahomes, stock down on the Chiefs.
The Chargers defense played as well as they could possibly
play tonight, and it seems like well, twenty seven to
twenty one, it was still the Chiefs had a chance
to pull it out. The Chargers defense ran the joint
the entire game. The only thing the Chiefs had going

(21:50):
for them were Mahomes's scrambles, right and the big and
the one big Botch play near the end, the Botch coverage.
They made a couple of mistakes themselves, right You had
the big bad penalty on Tart that gave the Chiefs
a first and goal from the ten, which was awful
because he punched Travis Kelcey. Like they made their own
mistakes a couple of times, But defensively, that was an

(22:10):
incredible performance by the Chargers, and people forget just how
good this Chargers defense. This is a top five unit
in the NFL and one of the main reasons why
I picked them for the AFC Championship game. They showed
you tonight. This is how where this is gonna be
a very similar way. They play all season long, complete games,
great games from Herbert. They'll run the football as much
as they have to. Now. Keenan Allen already looks like

(22:33):
he never left LA. He was their leading receiver tonight
in targets and catches. Obviously as great a player as
Leed McConkey, as Quentin Johnson is showing. Hey, this is
why they drafted him so early a couple of years ago.
But this defense. The Chiefs had nothing going on in
the first half, nothing. They played so well top to bottom.
This is kind of who the Chargers are. And it

(22:54):
was only because Mahomes is Mahomes and the scrambles. It's like,
what are you gonna do? Right? You had everything else,
Mahomes are scrambling because nothing is open downfield right there.
They're covering him, they're pressuring him, but he finds a way.
It's the most frustrating thing with Mahomes is that when
you think you have the Chiefs lockdown, they're done, Mahomes
will scramble for fifteen yards and it's a back breaking play.

(23:15):
That's all they had to that. It's because Mahomes is
a brilliant quarterback. That's the only thing they had Outside
of that. This was a phenomenal performance by the Chargers
and you're going to get that all the way through.
This is a great, great.

Speaker 3 (23:26):
Defense top to bottom about his consistent and complete an
effort as we've seen out of this squad in some time.
Right when we look at everything, firing in the run
game will be better. The offensive line, we've celebrated them
over the course of the night, justin Herbert. Look, he's

(23:47):
got a huge test in you know the next couple
of weeks, right you're looking at more division games. He's
gonna have to evade Max Crosby, who will probably have
more rushes on him in the first possession than the
Chiefs surmount the entire night. And then after that they've
got the Broncos. That's the home opener on the twenty first.
That would probably be a fun one to attend. See

(24:09):
what kind of crowd split we get and what kind
of energy is going coming out of that Raider game,
which is a Monday night football game.

Speaker 1 (24:16):
But all of that to say, but it's the new
Raiders though. It's Gino and Pete Carroll and Ashton Genty.
Like the Raiders are interesting and fun for the first
time in years because they have they have guys you
care about like I care like Gino Smith. I want
to see him play. Pete Carroll, I'm glad he's on
the sideline. Ash And Genty, I can't wait to see him.
The Charges the last couple of years have been Man,

(24:37):
this is really done. I just can't make as good
as he is. I can't just make brock Bowers happen
like the You gotta give me something to care about. Man,
The Raiders are gonna be fightgain best last place team
in the NFL. They'll be the best last place team
out of all eight divisions.

Speaker 3 (24:53):
I can't even use the old line that we would
have thrown on top of that one. He's the no
never mind, Yes, Geno's fun and Pete's fun. They're still
gonna be terrible. But it is a game in Las Vegas,
so potential for a little bit of chaos. But all
that to say, the best thing about the Raiders is
they actually have a decent defensive line. So that'll be

(25:14):
another good test for for what Greg Roman and Harbaugh
and the scripting and they want to dial up, you know,
for this Chiefs team. You know, people are gonna be
quick to bear him. It's gonna be overreaction like we
had coming out of arch Manning a week ago. It's terrible,
it's awful. The Travis Kelcey half assed drop at the

(25:34):
end of the game is going to be played back
nine thousand times. Add some Taylor Swift jokes along the way,
no question about it.

Speaker 1 (25:43):
But they got it.

Speaker 3 (25:43):
They got a bunch of things they're gonna need to fix.

Speaker 1 (25:45):
In a hurry.

Speaker 3 (25:46):
Right, You got no pressure at all coming out of them.
As well as the run game. Your best runner by
far was Patrick Mahomes. Yeah it wasn't even close. Yeah,
right there, and then there's a problem, right, keep waiting
for Pachecko to happen, Kareema.

Speaker 1 (26:04):
How if you have Mahomes on your fantasy team, that's
not a problem. You want that.

Speaker 3 (26:07):
If you have Mahomes, you Homes, No, absolutely, I mean, look,
you got the glorious nature of it, no question about it.
And if you started Hollywood Brown, you felt pretty good.
Because once Travis Kelcey hit Xavier Worthy on that little
you know what was supposed to be a rub play
and instead he took his own guy to the ground
and now he may have a big injury, then Hollywood

(26:29):
Brown becomes that guy with his sixteen targets. But you know,
a fun AFC West battle to get things started. But
for the Chargers, I think a lot of raised eyebrows,
particularly if you're going to get this version of Justin Herbert.
Look that pocket's not going to stay that clean, but
showing that escapability. I mean he finished with over thirty
rushing yards, nineteen of them coming on that final game

(26:50):
deciding scramble on third and fourteen. But a lot of
excitement coming out of this, right, The Rams have gotten
a lot of juice here, you know, from the professional
football side of things. They they lost the Raiders shop
in you know, University walk, So I mean that sucks.
But now it's the time for for the Chargers and

(27:10):
Jim Harbaugh to really take over the billboard battle against
the injury attorneys.

Speaker 1 (27:16):
Exit out about a Fresco exit swalling down the Jason
Smith Show with my best friend Mike Carmon. Watch out.
I'm telling you a Chargers watch out.

Speaker 3 (27:25):
I think you're just afraid of Frostburg.

Speaker 1 (27:28):
No, no, no, he hates it. I picked the Chargers.
He hates it. He hates goes. Oh you're gonna ruin.
Don't you see the success rate we have on this
show when we make picks like this and bullprig, Yeah,
you're ruining the Chargers? Okay, okay? I mean was it
easier for me to pick the Chargers to go to
the AFC title game with Frostburg not being here this
week because he was in Brazil? I mean, ndred percent
was easier. So when he comes back, I'm like, hey,

(27:49):
I picked him and you won the game. What are
you worried about? Right, suck? It's fine.

Speaker 3 (27:52):
Is gonna yell It's it's only September, jerk, He's gonna
get all mad at you. I could see it coming
from a mile away. But how good was it to
see old number thirteen roaming around again?

Speaker 4 (28:03):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (28:03):
I mean like he never left, like he was like boy,
Like that year with the Bears didn't happen, and here
he is. I still where wide receivers go to die.

Speaker 3 (28:12):
We've talked about this forever. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (28:14):
No, and a lot of deaths. There's a lot, a
lot of them, a lot of.

Speaker 3 (28:18):
Them there, but stacked graveyard.

Speaker 1 (28:20):
We'll have the entire night Monday to talk about the Bears.
That's gonna be awesome.

Speaker 3 (28:24):
Well, either way, this guy is falling, either in Minnesota
or Chicago. Jude teams everybody was excited about. Uh So,
let the chaos ensue. It'll be nine to six or
something like.

Speaker 1 (28:34):
That, and Tyson pagent off the bench for his fourth
touchdown here in the second half. All right, Uh time
how to find out what's trending in the wide world
of sports from special delivery Steve to Seger. But normally
I give a great welcome to Steve. But instead, since
I know a couple of stories he's gonna do, I
want to tell you my Billy Joel Tennis NFL joke.

(28:57):
You guys ready, Okay, I'm made this up to I
made this up tonight.

Speaker 2 (29:01):
You made it up.

Speaker 3 (29:02):
Just made this up, Yes, Jason Smith, original joke.

Speaker 1 (29:05):
I made. I made this up a half hour goo.
I said, I can't wait to do it when Steve
does what's trending up?

Speaker 6 (29:10):
Okay, Friday night, dad joke?

Speaker 1 (29:11):
Here you go ready? Why does Billy Joel like the
best player in tennis more than the worst team in
the NFL. Why does Billy Joel like the best player
in tennis more than the worst team in the NFL?

Speaker 6 (29:26):
The song title coming? Why is that Jason?

Speaker 1 (29:29):
He is Billy Joel would rather laugh with sinner than
cry with the Saints. There you go, there you go.
That's not.

Speaker 6 (29:43):
This might be before nineteen ninety three.

Speaker 1 (29:45):
Only the good guy Young, come on, tight shirt, come on.

Speaker 3 (29:49):
Go out.

Speaker 2 (29:50):
Oh.

Speaker 6 (29:50):
Speaking of which, it's actually Chase Young of the Saints
that was in the news today. The defensive end is no,
his health is fine otherwise, but he's out for this
weekend with the calf injury. And yes, the Chargers did
beat the Chiefs twenty seven to twenty one, so coach
Jim Harbaugh is now six to oh in NFL season openers.
Nick Sirianni five and oh, just for the record, now,

(30:12):
the Chiefs. To say this was a winnable game is
an understatement. In the second half, they missed an extra
point kick, they missed a two point pass. They had
in this one a very very long drive that they
settled for a field goal on in the first half.
It was sixteen plays forty nine yards, a near nine
minute drive, and they didn't get a touchdown out of it.

(30:33):
In fact, the Chiefs did not have a touchdown drive
in the first half, same as the Super Bowl this
past season, which means the Chiefs went back to back
games without a TD drive in the first half for
the first time ever. With Patrick Mahomes on third downs
in the first half, they were zero for seven. Mahomes
kept him in the game. He had a touchdown, pass,
touchdown run, six carries fifty seven yards, but the Chargers

(30:56):
wonted twenty seven to twenty one. As Justin Herbert has
three d at eighteen yards passing by the end and
three touchdowns Chiefs with ten penalties. Buffalo Bills kicker Tyler
Bass was placed on injured reserve. Matt Prater will kick Sunday.
Packers defensive end Micah Parsons was limited in practice again
with a bad back, and forty nine Ers running back
Christian McCaffrey did not practice due to a calf injury.

(31:19):
He's questionable for their opener Sunday, but he says he
plans to play four college football games. Tonight wins for
Boise State and Northwestern, wins for Maryland and Louisville, which
pulled away twenty eight to fourteen over James Madison at
the US Open. Number one Yonick Center advance Tonight. Number
two Carlos Alcarez swept Novak Djokovic in a semi final.

(31:40):
Three WNBA wins victories for Atlanta, New York, and Indiana
at home beat Chicago ninety seven seventy seven the Chicago
Sky ten and thirty one. Chicago suspended Angel Rees for
the first half Sunday for comments detrimental.

Speaker 1 (31:55):
To the team.

Speaker 6 (31:55):
She was already serving a mandatory one game suspension by
the league after her eighth time technical foul of the summer.
To Major League Baseball, everything is final. As the A's
have won ten to four at the Angels, Arizona beat
Boston ten to five, and earlier Toronto was a winner
seven to one at the Yankees. The Blue Jays are
first in the AL East, now four games over the Yankees,
four and a half up on the Red Sox in

(32:18):
the NLS. The Phillies still six games over the Mets.
Phillies were nine, three winners at Miami, four hits for
Trey Turner. Mets won five to four. At Cincinnati, Reds
had bases loaded, no outs bottom of the ninth and
did not score the save to edwin Diaz. White Sox
won their six.

Speaker 1 (32:33):
Is it really a save if he loaded the bases
and gave me all kinds of anxiety and then yes
it is? I mean, okay, I guess so sure.

Speaker 6 (32:40):
How many hundreds of saves did Craig Kimberl have in
his career which is still going by the way, For
those who didn't know, White Sox won their six straight
wins for the Brewers and the Cubs. Baltimore edge the
Dodgers two to one on a solo homer in the
bottom of the ninth, the loss to Tanner Scott. Atlanta
with three runs bottom of the eighth, beat Seattle to one.
Texas won in twelve innings. Kansas City was a winner.

(33:04):
Colorado sent the Padres to a fifth straight loss three nothing,
and the Giants won their fifth in a row.

Speaker 1 (33:09):
Back to you, Thank you, Steve O. The Jason Smith
Show with my best friend Mike Carmon coming up next week,
continue our big preview of week one in the NFL,
we look at two more big games on the slate Sunday.
Who's walking away with the wins? Keep it right here.

Speaker 2 (33:27):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific.

Speaker 1 (33:35):
Taking you back to nineteen eighty seven when in Rome
the promise, one of the first electronica hits of the eighties,
still lives today, nearly forty years later. Go sign Justin
feeds He'll run with the ball but not throw it well.

(34:05):
And when you need your yard, give the ball to
Breeze Hall and sack Aaron Rodgers again and again.

Speaker 3 (34:19):
And again and again and again and again.

Speaker 1 (34:21):
Okay, promise me Fox Sports Radio Jason Smith Show with
my best friend Mike Harmon. You okay, pal, Yeah, no,
I love this.

Speaker 3 (34:34):
You seem like there was a lot of aggression, almost
like you were taking a baseball bat to a fax
machine when you went again and again. I mean it
wasn't an aerosmith again and again, you know, kind of
wistful and longing. No no, no, this was angry and bitter.
But that one stole your dinner or some crap.

Speaker 1 (34:52):
No, no, that was That was damn It feels good
to be a gangster, right, that's it.

Speaker 3 (34:55):
That's right, Jack.

Speaker 1 (34:59):
Then they pull Mike Bolt the way you No, no,
he wants more heating it. They can't pull them off
the fax machine to go back.

Speaker 3 (35:08):
I want more like punching face mask in the NFL.
Come on, I want some of that.

Speaker 1 (35:14):
Jason Smith Mike Harbon live from the Fox Sports Radio Studios,
continuing our big preview a week one in the NFL.
We'll have more from the big shootout in Brazil coming
up in a few minutes, but a couple of games
look big games on Sunday. The Steelers in the Jets
is getting more and more attention. Big early game with
Aaron Rodgers return justin fields against his former team as well,

(35:36):
a lot of interest. The Jets are like the hey boy,
They've got a lot of attention to them, and they've
been terrible the last couple of years. What can they
do here? But clearly the Steelers Hey always a big
interest level here. You say, Homer pick, I'm gonna say,
once in a while, the Jets will start you out
with a surprise. Despite their offensive line being in flux,

(35:57):
they will show way more on offense than the preseason.
Their defense is going to dominate. I told you this
week it's gonna be an uncomfortable debut for Aaron Rodgers,
who clearly throws off his back foot way early, does
not want to hold onto the football at all. The
Aaron Glen effect is there in full force. Low scoring
in a sixteen to thirteen type range for the Jets.

(36:19):
The defense makes the big plays in this one. I'll
give you a bold one justin fields seventy five yards rushing,
They're gonna unleash that aspect of the offense that you
haven't seen field Maybe a big day throwing the ball
like under one hundred and seventy yards is bot where
he's at, But give me over seventy five yards and
running the football. This is how the Jets are gonna play.
They beat the Steelers in a low scoring game. Take

(36:40):
the under his rushing.

Speaker 3 (36:42):
Total currently sitting at forty one and a half, passing
yardage one seventy three and a half. To go along
with what you had to say there, the curiosity for
me is whether they can get what they get from
the rest of that rushing attack. Right between Brail and
Allen Brese Hall the Currents combined, you're looking at about

(37:02):
seventy five total yards on the ground between the two
of them. Can you run clock? Can you solve the
defensive front there for Pittsburgh and not getting into really
bad situations where you know, watch just tracking justin fields
down now you're thinking about him being stocked, like you know,
the velociraptors are coming after him or something. Aaron Glynn

(37:25):
has been a great story this week, just talking about
the excitement and the anticipation of what this first game
means for him, which is pretty sweet. Downplaying doesn't want
to talk about Aaron Rodgers. That's all fine and good
for me. I'm looking at it. Steelers are now a
three point favorite, so that's actually moved out and they've
gotten more money. That's been two and a half all
week long. So I'll take your Jets with the points,

(37:49):
but I'm gonna take the Steelers on the field.

Speaker 1 (37:51):
Houston and the Rams. I love the Rams, I love Houston.
I love everything about both these teams. And I'm going
with the Texans even though it's in But yeah, La
in the NFC title game. Yes, I also have Houston
having a big season, having the best record overall in
the AFC. The Rams starts slow every year, right Matthew
Stafford needs ramp up time. He's not played at all.

(38:12):
It's gonna be a slow start. Houston's defense will dominate
the game in the trenches, They'll dominate in the secondary.
The offense will spread the ball around. Houston will impress.
And I'll tell you this, Give me CJ. Stroud will
throw at least three touchdowns. We'll get the young wide
receivers involved. I love the Rams. Not gonna change anything
about them. I love the Texans, and I love them

(38:32):
starting out big week one. Give me CJ. Stroud to
start that big bounce back year.

Speaker 3 (38:37):
This is what strikes is a low scoring game over under.
Sitting at forty three and a half Rams of three
point home favorite. I'm gonna take them to win and
to cover because that defensive line of the Rams dominates
the line of scrimmage, creating all sorts of issues for CJ.

Speaker 1 (38:52):
Stroud.

Speaker 3 (38:53):
He may get some of his stats, but he ain't
getting the w Oh. So there, you can go to
that game front of forty bucks too.

Speaker 1 (38:59):
By the way, it's way more to go to Iowa
State Iowa Way way more sure, way more way.

Speaker 3 (39:05):
Syhawk, much much bigger.

Speaker 1 (39:07):
I gotta go, I gotta go. Uh exit out about
a Fresca exit swollen dome coming up next. Speaking of
the number three, it's a big number when it comes
to what we saw tonight in Brazil between the Chiefs
and the Chargers Fox DJ when in Rome,
