the latest on Jerry Jones coming up in a bit,
but I mean clearly there's the latest every five minutes.
It's like wow, yeah, it's like fuck the weather in
the Midwest. But yeah, no, it's like following politics. This
is a big story that was at noon. It's three o'clock.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
There's a much.
Speaker 1 (01:17):
Bigger story than that, really there is. I didn't check
my phone in the.
Speaker 3 (01:19):
Last hour and a half.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
Oh yeah, yeah, But two big things from today in
the NFL. One involving a potential strategy for a team
that just gave its quarterback a ton of money.
Speaker 3 (01:33):
And Rats. We should do the Rats first. Huh.
Speaker 4 (01:35):
Well, anytime we can get Rats into the show, I
mean we are the Rats show of record, no question about.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:42):
Any movie that references Rats or television show, we rank
them and whatever. There's a big story on rat infestations
and takeovers across our country. We make sure we take
the list back out and try to re rank them
for you. So everybody loves top five lists. So yeah,
here we go with the pizza rat had his run
for a while, and then Filmy took over. Chicago has
(02:03):
their own I mean out out here in la I mean, look,
we've had so much devastation.
Speaker 3 (02:08):
The rats are everywhere. Yeah, oh one hundred percent.
Speaker 1 (02:10):
I mean really, I mean this is where you say
to yourself, Okay, where are the most powerful rats, and
that's why we do the rat rankings that once in
a great while. But speaking of rats, Patriots head coach
Mike Rabel might be on a rat hunt now. Was
just a day ago reports came out that Jalen Polk
wide receiver gonna miss the season again. You know, Pat
(02:31):
Patri's had big hopes for him now for a couple
of years. He's gonna miss the year. And Mike Rabel
not happy that that information got out, and he talked
about this in his press conference earlier today, saying it's
time for him to sniff out whoever is leaking this
stuff out to the media.
Speaker 3 (02:50):
Surgery. Can you add anything to that?
Speaker 1 (02:52):
No, I don't know, other than I'd like to find
out where some of these come from, you know, some
of these rats around here.
Speaker 3 (02:58):
So we'll figure out out.
Speaker 4 (03:01):
Well, the best is that it's not with the rye
smile or the little wink right or the raised eyebrow
like he's you know, channeling his inner rock or insert
de Niro, Paccino, Caitel whomever here. No, no, no, this
was very much a I'm pissed.
Speaker 1 (03:20):
Yeah oh yeah, yeah, I mean just the way he
threw out there. We'll got to find the rats that
are that are leaking this out there. I want to say,
I don't know that it's a rat, but you know,
agents not saying it's agents, but agents pretty much know
what's going on with their clients all the time, and
if someone's hurt not playing, I think they want that information.
(03:40):
I'm not saying I know who it is, but it
doesn't need to be rats inside the building.
Speaker 3 (03:44):
All the time.
Speaker 4 (03:45):
But that's just it though, right, unless there was some
consideration and concern that perhaps in a depth chart kind
of situation, he would have been on the bubble, so
you know, you're you're getting calls as the agent and
representation thereof that, hey you know your guy, you know,
does he have destinations if he doesn't make it there?
(04:07):
But there was no indication that Polk was in that spot, right.
It seemed from anything that I'd looked into this offseason
and certainly heading into camp and starting to do you know,
our fantasy stuff that we do for the iwatcher flex,
that they were banking on him to take on a
bigger role in year two alongside Drake May. So I
(04:28):
don't know that that would have been the case, but yeah,
I mean it's very easy that the agent just said, yeah,
he's it doesn't matter because he ain't gonna play the Rats,
So I.
Speaker 1 (04:37):
Gotta get that rats. I want to say this, I
like Mike Rabel. I think he's absolutely perfect for what
they need in New England. He's building a great culture.
I told you how afraid I am that of what
he's doing. And yeah, culture versus culture, he's doing that great.
But I gotta say this, are you really just going
to be this kind of a jerk all the time
with the media, Like already he is liked that. It's
(04:59):
like you said, like, like there's a rule. Now, Hey,
whoever comes in and as the head coach of the Patriots,
you have to treat the media with disdain and that
they're beneath you, and that there's you know, they're they're
working subversively against you. Like I'm done. It's the preseason
of his first year, man and this is stuff that
gets out And I'm sorry, Mike Rabel, but when a
guy gets hurt, information on him gets out there. It's
(05:19):
I know, you want to make it seem like we
can keep a lid on it, but you can't do
that nowadays. I'm sorry, Like, like, I don't want this
to be the whole thing because I want to be
able to think Mike Rabel is going to be But nah,
if he's just gonna continue to be this guy, I'm like,
come on, man, yeah, really, you really have to be
this have this much disdain towards the media, which really
is not working against you. You know, ninety eight percent
(05:41):
of the media is out there to do their job
and go home, and they like doing what they do
for a living. You know, I really here it is
the rats get a legaty rats are telling people stuff.
Speaker 4 (05:50):
It's getting out there. Well, I mean he didn't call
the reporters rats. I mean we had guys do that before.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
Oh I'm sorry. Yes, he meant.
Speaker 1 (05:57):
He meant to hold the fifth of State in the
high esteem. What are he's saying, yeah, find out what
rat is leaking stuff to you? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (06:03):
You know, okay, yeah, yeah, No.
Speaker 4 (06:05):
He doesn't mean he necessarily endgame of it. I mean,
the guy did play in the Belichick.
Speaker 3 (06:10):
Warship for a long time. Sure he learned from watching him.
Speaker 4 (06:13):
Okay, got to go back and watch your old anti
drug efforts from the advertisers back in the day, folks,
but just the idea that you know, for Vrabel and
in house, they may have had a way they wanted
to message it.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
Maybe they had.
Speaker 4 (06:29):
More tests that they thought they would undergo, last ditch
efforts of how quickly we can get a guy back.
But that gets stunted because well, the report gets out
there and then it's done. Right, So now if you're
going to go into the marketplace, because this becomes the
other thing, Right, you're looking at depth chart, You're looking
at guys that might be available. Right, what was the
other story that was circulating all day about potential trades
(06:51):
of wide receivers? Right, so maybe they're in the marketplace. Well,
someone letting the cat out of the proverbial bag that
they're down a man doesn't exactly help them, No, doesn't.
So yeah, I think I'd be a little peeved, not
necessarily at the reporters, but I can understand his vexation.
Speaker 3 (07:09):
Here exit out about a Fresca exit swollen dome.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
Jason Smith mink carbon So from rats to the forty
nine ers trade in the in the NFL today, and
we was rumored we were gonna hear.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
Something like this.
Speaker 1 (07:23):
Brian Robinson, Junior, Washington Commander's running back. It's been the
talk of the NFL the last couple of weeks, and
he was on his way out. He wanted out. He
didn't even dress nor attend their last preseason game, and
it just seemed like it was a matter of time
before he got traded. Now he's there starting running back.
But they do have a lot of depth, They have
a lot They have some good running backs. I always
like Chris Rodriguez. I thought they'd give him some more run.
(07:45):
They got a rookie that they let. Bill is a
terrific running back. They love Bill in Washington. But they
make the trade today and they trade Brian Robinson Junior
to the forty nine ers. And while you think, okay,
here's the you know, okay, they trade they trade Robinson
to the forty nine ers.
Speaker 3 (08:00):
Okay, think about this for a second, because what.
Speaker 1 (08:03):
Does this mean. Robinson's a guy. Who is he He's
the Najy Harris of the NFC. Right, He's not great,
but he's young and he's solid. He's gonna give you
four yards a carry. He's not gonna turn the ball
over a ton of fumble once or twice a year.
But he's he's the nausey Harris. Now, clearly Mike Tomlin
gave him the football way too much in Pittsburgh, and
(08:26):
it's not like Brian Robinson got the football that much
with the with Washington. But still he's their number one
running back. Yes, it's a big move for San Francisco
because they have their other running backs, you know what,
one they haven't had all all preseason, and and Grendo
is still coming back from an injury. So you want
somebody in back at Christian McCaffrey, who, thankfully for them,
is healthy. Now, yeah, you could say, well McCaffrey's getting
(08:48):
a little older. If he hits the wall, they can
go to a guy who's a little bit younger. They
have a great backup now, they're the guy that can
count on. You could say all of these things, but
look at it this way. Robinson has a pretty good
amount of talent. You didn't get him to sit him
on the bench the entire time, right, You didn't get
him to say, hey, you'll come in if we need you.
(09:09):
So I see two things coming out of this, which
is really big deal for San Francisco. He will probably
spell Christian McCaffrey a little bit more often than you expect,
because San Francisco is gonna want to keep McCaffrey fresh
as he gets into the the the end parts of
his career as a running back, getting older, wanting to
keep him healthy. So yeah, okay, I expect that a
little bit. But think about this for a second. So, yeah,
(09:31):
McCaffrey get into McCaffrey's touch a little bit. But now
you have two running backs that are gonna get the
football a ton. You just gave Brock Purdy two hundred
and sixty million dollars over five years, with nearly two
hundred million dollars of it guaranteed. How much of this
is done? Thinking that the forty nine Ers strategy offensively
(09:54):
this year is gonna be a lot different than it was,
not gonna rely on Perdy's right arm like they did
in twenty twenty three when he threw thirty touchdowns. Last
year he came all the way down to twenty touchdowns
still twelve interceptions through thirty eight hundred yards. I wonder
how much they are taking off of Brock Purty's plate
and putting on the running backs. And you're gonna see
(10:15):
a different slant to the game this year because Robinson's
a little too talented to be the guy to just
sit there and sit behind Christian McCaffrey and kno get
on the field more. I wonder if you're gonna go
back and seeing this Kyle Shanahan sledge hammer passing attack
like you saw when it was Jimmy Garoppolo taking the
forty nine Ers to the Super Bowl a few years ago,
(10:35):
when that's what really worked, right, Because this wasn't Garoppolo
going crazy throwing the football all over the field. This was, Hey,
we're gonna run the football a lot, We're gonna make
sure we control the game. We'll play great defense, and
our quarterback will make plays when they have to. And honestly,
that works when it's Jimmy Garoppolo. Does that work when
you have a quarterback you're paying two hundred and sixty
million dollars too, that you're gonna suddenly make him a
(10:58):
little bit less important? And judging by this move today,
this tells me that we're gonna see the old forty
nine ers with a little bit less emphasis on brock party. Wow.
Speaker 4 (11:07):
I mean, look, the Chargers are paying Justin Herbert a
lot of money. They're not exactly emphasizing him winging the
ball all over the place. So I could do that
because Frostburg's out here to like, yeah, stuff at me.
Yeah no, I know you're doing that tonight because he's
not here. It would be a different take if he
was here. No, no, I mean say take I just look,
I got a sore neck. I don't know, I woke
(11:28):
up wrong, and so like I'm not if he comes
from my peripheral vision, I'm in trouble today, but okay
where Yeah no, really sore, yeah no, it's like someone
gave me the gave me the crossroads, like Cody Rhades
got hold of me and then.
Speaker 3 (11:43):
That rolled me a couple of times. Just sore as hell.
Speaker 4 (11:45):
But all that to say, you've got Jennings when he's healthy,
Pierce all year two. I you can eventually be back,
so that as the season goes on, you're expecting in theory,
healthier and depth.
Speaker 3 (11:56):
A wide received.
Speaker 4 (11:57):
Right, George Kittle is there, older but still attacking the
run game. In the Outwatch Flex podcast, Ian Roddy Are
executive producer buyer and I sat and we were doing
our running back ranks, and I got deeper into the
Christian McCaffrey to this point, and this was before the
edition of Robinson, And it makes me feeling even better
about it now, is that, based on where your receiving
(12:20):
corps is, I'm looking for McCaffrey to be back towards
one hundred receptions like he was back in twenty nineteen.
That's gonna be the most effective way to use him.
You bring in Robinson and he's the guy that does
his nausey Harris, as you called it, Sae Chargers. We
tied it all together three point seven to four yards
of carry. But then you got McCaffrey working in the slot.
(12:44):
You got him catching the ball out of the backfield
like he used to, where he's not gonna get pounded
the same way, and so you can keep him healthy,
keep him involved, get his explosiveness back on the field
with a little less of that wear and tear. Being
a three hundred touch back. So the acquisition of Robinson here,
and this showed me I'd be curious what offer, if
(13:05):
any came up from the because the Dolphins were rumored
for a while that they were still going to pretend
to want to play this year with h hand hurt,
and then Jalen Wright left, but I'll e Gordon the
second is now your man for your fantasy draft kits
as you go through. But for the forty nine ers,
yeah it look they're looking for wins. And as much
(13:26):
as we could say, wins aren't a quarterback stat if
Brock Perdy is a nice leisurely twenty five and eight
or twenty five and ten, and they're fighting towards, you know,
hosting a super Bowl this year up there and what
is it, Levi's everybody's gonna be happy.
Speaker 1 (13:45):
Man, I'm telling you that that's something to say. Yeah,
here you go, Brock, here's two hundred and sixty million,
and now we're gonna take a little bit off your plate.
Wait wait, yeah, yeah, yeah, I don't worrybout it. Don'torry,
but everything's gonna be fine. Don't worry, don't worry.
Speaker 3 (13:56):
It's all fine. It's all fine.
Speaker 1 (13:57):

Speaker 3 (15:12):
The Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike Harmon.
Speaker 1 (15:16):
Yeah, Live from the Fox Sports Radio studios. And you
know what I wish?
Speaker 3 (15:21):
I can't waited.
Speaker 4 (15:24):
There's a story song going, I gotta know how it ends.
He got mad at his girlfriend and then he went
to the club. Yes, Brenda and Eddie get married. They
shouldn't have gotten married.
Speaker 1 (15:34):
They get divorce as a matter of course, but they
part very close.
Speaker 3 (15:38):
And day two of Billy joelisms.
Speaker 1 (15:40):
Yeah, that's where on Fox Sports, Lisa, listen, they got
an apartment with a deep pile carpet and a couple
of paintings at Sears.
Speaker 3 (15:46):
Right, that's how it is Sears, Roebuck.
Speaker 1 (15:49):
Let's have the story well then, and then they'll be
at the studio singing this song they wrote about a
girl he used to know, right, Son Newston, I can't
say I'm a little disappointed, right, like like Jets not mad. No, No,
I just said because I can't really say that I'm
really really mad. But look, the Jets lose to the
(16:13):
Eagles tonight preseason. We'll get to the big preseason game
in a minute. Uh, But like what I wanted to
see out of here, like I wanted to see the
Jets one of the Jets backup quarterbacks look really good,
because Brady Cook has looked really good in this in
this Uh, during the summer, he did not and in
the end, I wanted to see Kyle McCord play well, right,
I mean, like he's still my guy.
Speaker 3 (16:31):
Man.
Speaker 1 (16:31):
He brought Syracuse football back from the depths of of
where no one even cared, and this season he had
best season the Syracuse quarterbacks ever had. I'm like, okay,
I wanted to succeed. It's a final week of the preseason.
I don't care it's against my team. Cole Accord's my
guy and he was terrible tonight, Like I want I
have sitting here going you see, Kyle, this is why
(16:53):
you could have got a lot of nil money and
went back to Syracuse, man, Like, why didn't you push
to sue the NCAA to give you more than time
because here you are barely holding on to being the
third string quarterback in Philadelphia fifteen out of thirty five
for one hundred and thirty six yards in a touchdown.
Speaker 3 (17:08):
Like I don't know, man, Like I look at guys.
Speaker 1 (17:11):
Like McCord and youers who's trying to hold on to
be in the number three quarterback in Miami And I
just go, what kind of evaluation did you get where
you thought getting to the NFL instead of going someplace
else to make five or six million dollars, which you
could have done right, Like McCord could have gotten five
million to stay at Syracuse and Syrix would be a
(17:32):
they'd be a college football playoff can even with the
toughest schedule in the country. Quinn Ewers could have left Texas,
which you would have had to anyway because you're not
keeping arch Manning on the bench. But he could have
got six million dollars, seven million dollars gone someplace else
to be a quarterback for a top flight CFB, a
college football playoff team. All these guys could have done that,
but no, no, they go to the NFL in they're
drafting the six and seventh round and it's hey, if
(17:54):
you you're just you're not even a curiosity at this point.
Like you it's it's not even if you make the roster,
it would be, hey, it's a bonus. Like, I don't
know where these guys get this advice where you could
have one more year in school and as a quarterback
you could amp up your importance and work on your
game and get paid. It's your last chance to really
(18:16):
get paid. And they don't do it. And I see
guy like mccordy viewers, and I go, wow, man, who
was giving these guys.
Speaker 3 (18:23):
Advice that they were gonna get going that high? Really?
Who was gonna do that?
Speaker 4 (18:26):
But it's funny because it's the antithesis of what we've
seen from the basketball side. Now, a lot of guys
are still gonna declare they're done with whatever the collegiate
experience or that one year overseas saying hey, I'm gonna
come do this and whatever. But we've seen those numbers
decline the last couple of years. Guys saying, wait, I
can make what playing basketball, even if I bounced to
(18:49):
another school because they've found a better point guard, a
better shooting for, a shooting guard, whatever the case may be,
that I can go do it for quarterbacks. I mean,
you're getting rich. I mean, what's his name? IAmA Maliava. Right,
he's out with the charge. Not right, he went to
three different schools, made a ton of money before.
Speaker 1 (19:10):
J Nico also saying I'm gonna leave you at some
point and go someplace else teaching.
Speaker 4 (19:15):
But you know what I mean, Like this said, hey,
someone else is coming in. Okay, I'm out Wait they're
gonna pay me what?
Speaker 3 (19:20):
Okay? I'm calling.
Speaker 4 (19:21):
And we've seen a number of guys do that. And
you can laugh about the sixth year quarterback or or
with the COVID years where we had the extra years
and guys coming to the league. Right, Chuck is unfortunately
a guy that people are gonna try.
Speaker 3 (19:35):
To wear out. Go back and watch some of his
Louisville tape. The guy can sling it.
Speaker 4 (19:39):
Whether it translates, I don't know, but he was a
pretty good college quarterback. So we'll see what happens. But
you take advantage of every year you can. It's a
couple of million bucks at this point for any of
those big schools. And to leave that and and I
get it, maybe you finished your degree. Maybe you're kind
of done with the college experience. You don't want to
(19:59):
Belu Tarski hanging around. Wow, I'm really just showing my
age there, gen xers who Blue Tarski. Let's go to
animal house and just kind of hang around. I gave
my love a chicken it had you know that kind
of thing.
Speaker 3 (20:14):
Do you have a pledge pin on your uniform?
Speaker 4 (20:18):
All?
Speaker 3 (20:18):
Right?
Speaker 4 (20:18):
Now, wipe that spit off the microphone. But it's you're
all worthless and weak. But it's just the idea that
if you can extend it for another year. Like it's
like you tell your daughter, I tell my daughters. All
of you out there, wherever you're listening, you tell your kids,
Hey man, stay a kid that extra year if you can,
or two or three being a grownup. It can't have
(20:41):
great things, right, there's milestones, there's things you get to
go do. There's other parts of it that suck. So
if you could delay, you know, delay those a little
bit and stay in school just a little bit longer. Look,
some folks never leave, they get four or five degrees.
I'm not talking about those people. I'm talking about the
folks that say I could stick around for an extra
six months, maybe add on, get the masters, or or
(21:03):
in this particular case, I don't know, go make another
four million dollars before you become the seventh round pick.
Trying to hang on at the back end of a
roster and then becoming a journeyman. Not a hell with it.
Stay in college the one more year. So appeal to
the NCAA. They actually get through some of these lawsuits
even faster.
Speaker 3 (21:23):
Now, I guarantee you.
Speaker 1 (21:24):
Look, Kyle McCord wanted to stay at Syracuse and because
Ohio State burned a year from him by having him
play in four games. Right now, usually college football rules
in favor of the player, even in the most egregious
of situations. Right they don't want to see him, but
we're anti player. We want guys to stick around. We
want especially if they're to stay at school.
Speaker 4 (21:43):
Right they're feeding the beast, So anythink that that is
pro college football, they win.
Speaker 3 (21:48):
Yeah, this is.
Speaker 1 (21:49):
McCord was going to stay in school and he was
getting you know, and they were waiting for the decision,
and all of a sudden he says, yeah, no, I'm
going to the NFL.
Speaker 3 (21:56):
Like wow.
Speaker 1 (21:56):
And I thought at the time, okay, he got a
great evaluation because you know, look obviously the guy closed
the ear. Look he had he had one of the
top three years of any quarterback in all of college football.
The guy was fantastic. So I thought, okay, he got
a great evaluation, and he's gonna be like the outside
of the top quarterbacks meeting, you know, meaning well we
thought you were Sanders at the time, but you know,
cam Ward and Jalen Milroe, like.
Speaker 3 (22:18):
Okay, he's right there.
Speaker 1 (22:19):
He's gonna get to now now all the way to
the sixth round and it's oh wow, what a bad
decision that turned out to be.
Speaker 3 (22:25):
What a bad call?
Speaker 4 (22:26):
Yeah, I mean, look, in the end, you know, hindsight
twenty twenty, you realize the step up in class might
actually be a giant leap.
Speaker 1 (22:37):
It may be one giant leap for quarterback kind DJ.
So that's Look, that's from from the one game tonight.
But the big game. And I say big game because
we got and if you got to see it, awesome.
Speaker 3 (22:50):
He almost got to see it in.
Speaker 1 (22:51):
A real NFL game because both the Chiefs and the
Bears played many of their starters for the entire first half, right, Like,
that's pretty cool man, the third preseason game and Patrick
Mahomes is playing, how about that? And Caleb Williams is playing,
and Kelsey and Pachecko.
Speaker 3 (23:08):
And like Checko running like he care. Oh dude, Patrick.
Speaker 4 (23:13):
Mahomes not just doing a Queen's wave and going back
on the sideline.
Speaker 3 (23:17):
Come on, you had DJ Moore and Roma Doonza and
Rashi Rice. He had all these guys. Now it doesn't matter.
Speaker 1 (23:22):
Look, the Bears won twenty nine to twenty seven, and uh,
you know, a Tyson Pagent another incredible second half where
he's a wizard two hundred yards and three touchdowns. Again,
we'll get to that. We'll get to more on Baijen
and Caleb Williams coming up in a bit. But here's
the thing, and this is this is bad news for
the AFC. It's really bad news for the NFL because
watching the Chiefs play tonight, right, not just about their
(23:44):
game tonight, but seeing as you mentioned, Isaiah Pacheco running
like it was the third quarter of the AFC Championship game,
and here he is, and you know it's the third
preseason game and he's going to be the lead back
for the for the Chiefs. He looks back and he
is healthy and the receiving options for the Chiefs. This
is as healthy and active as they've been in quite
(24:07):
a long time. Right, Kelsey says, rededicated himself like looks
and I got fat and happy a little bit doing TV.
But he knows now he's nearing the end. But Rashi
Rice is back at least until we know what his
suspension is going to be. But at the first four
games of the season year two, for Xavier Worthy, who
was a pretty good weapon, Hollywood Brown right. Taekwon Forton
had a big catch tonight from Patrick Mahomes. I'm telling
(24:31):
you this is not People aren't gonna like this, but
I got a sneaking suspicion. This is the Patrick Mahomes
revenge year for what we've seen the last two years
where he turned into a game manager. Because that's really
what he's been, right, pat the last two years, Mahomes
has been not quite just a guy, but he's been
a game manager. Now it's worked for the Chiefs because
(24:52):
they have won. But I mean Patrick Mahomes, the record
setting quarterback who was throwing thirty seven forty touchdowns a year,
he's pretty pedestrian. The last two years. His quarterback ratings
are down, his touchdowns are down the first time.
Speaker 3 (25:06):
The last two years of the two full seasons have
been his worst two seasons of his career, and the
Chiefs offense has been different. It's been hey, we're doing
just enough, and Mahomes has really been a glorified game manager.
Speaker 1 (25:19):
Now, why is this? You go back last couple of years.
We've seen the Chiefs go through different iterations at wide
receiver room that just haven't worked out. Right, This is
Juju Smith Schuster back for a second go round. So
they've tried different weapons. They completely overhaul their wide receiver
room from year to year and it hasn't worked. But
now with everybody back from injury, right, Rice is hell again.
Speaker 3 (25:41):
Right.
Speaker 1 (25:42):
The suspension probably four games, maybe it gets cut down
to two or three, depending where we go, but he's
gonna play the beginning of the year. They have other
weapons here. This is as healthy and ready to go
as this offense has been in three years. And this
is where Patrick Mahomes reminds everybody. Oh, I used to
be the best quarterback in the NFL, Barnunn, and I
(26:04):
still am. And here's another forty touchdown year to remind
you all that this is who I used to be.
What I would throw for forty eight hundred yards and
forty touchdowns, and I would flip the ball behind my
back or throw it lefty like. Just seeing the Chiefs
and seeing how they're attacking this preseason, this tells me
that this is going to be the Patrick Mahomes revenge.
Hear and he's back to the quarterback that he was
(26:26):
three years ago.
Speaker 4 (26:27):
It is the curiosity because he is still a guy
who Mahomes that is being drafted as the number five
or six quarterback on average in most leagues. So as
if we look at it moving forward, right, it depends
how much you love we talk about some of the
guys that use their legs a bunch more when you
look at Jayden Daniels, you look at Jalen Hurts, or
(26:49):
you look at a guy like Joe Burrow, and what
we're expecting with another shoddy defensive effort from that squad.
As much as we love all the principal components on
the offense, that the offensive line still suspect. So maybe
Joe Burrow bounces up or down your list a little bit.
But Patrick mahomes right there. And last year was the
if you can get them, you get them here, right,
(27:10):
because they didn't have all those offensive weapons Kelsey, the argument.
Speaker 3 (27:15):
Was he wasn't in shape.
Speaker 4 (27:16):
Well, he had a pretty good year if his name
wasn't Travis Kelcey when you talk about his yards and reception.
Now in the red zone, he was neutralized a bit
easier than he had been in the past, not being
able to fight a way to create space. But they
shifted and now you're looking at a defense that's top notch, right,
probably by most analysts, ranked as a top five unit. There,
(27:39):
you look at it with Carl Loftus and the guys
up front still Reacan havoc. Now you look at the
receiving corps as you laid out all of those principles,
Kelsey back and rededicated.
Speaker 3 (27:51):
Look, he's got.
Speaker 4 (27:52):
Things so good that Taylor Swift's gonna go back to
ballads and happy in poppy music instead of I hate
this guy and let me bury him. By the way,
I think she released another limited edition color palette today.
Speaker 3 (28:06):
No, I'm just kidding. I thought.
Speaker 1 (28:08):
You see that's something I would have believed. You saying
that I believe I was already done.
Speaker 4 (28:12):
Believe three times she's gone back to the well three
times already and they sell out immediately.
Speaker 3 (28:18):
My god, getting deeper in your pocket.
Speaker 4 (28:20):
But all of that to say, you've got a couple
of running backs that get it done. So as long
as the offensive lines game, the defense is going to
give him from advantageous field position and you're gonna have
opportunities to go and wing it around. So yeah, the
last couple of years a bit pedestrian in terms of
the numbers. You got those speedsters on the outside look
at what he was able to do with Xavier Worthy
(28:40):
the second half of the year. If he is there
and Rice doesn't miss too much time, curious to see
how many games he ultimately gets when that decision comes down.
I mean, you've got depth that wide receiver for the
first time in a while, and while the division has
gotten a lot harder, you still got to go take
your swing at the King.
Speaker 1 (29:00):
Yeah. Oh look, and it's like you look. Pete fu
Tech college football analyst joined us last week and said, listen,
I'm stock up on arch Manning and I'm stock down
on Texas because I don't know the Texas can survive
this schedule, right. All they got to do is stuff
if they stubbed their toe week one, which is a
really difficult game. Like I feel like I'm stock up
on Mahomes stock down on the Chiefs because that division
(29:20):
is just so absolutely loaded. But offensively, yeah, it's gonna
be back to if we're gonna beat the Chiefs, we
gotta put points on the board.
Speaker 3 (29:29):
Now.
Speaker 1 (29:29):
Both both the Chargers and the Broncos can do that. Defensively,
they're both really strong. But you know, so again, any
one of those three teams can win the division, but
the Patrick Mahomes bounce back to Patrick Mahomes middle finger
revenge tour, blank you I'm still great. Yeah, No, that's
gonna happen this year. I feel I feel bad for
the rest of the AFC, including you know, the Jets.
I feel bad that that's what's gonna happen because it
(29:51):
was nice to and when you thought Mahomes was just
gonna settle his way into being a nice game manager
in twenty five twenty six touchdowns a.
Speaker 3 (29:58):
Year and hoping at the end of his career say
I got more Super Bowls than Brady. I got more. Look,
I got more. I'm the goat. I'm the real goat
right here. Let me wait, let me just check social media.
Did Douc Jackson? Did you say anything?
Speaker 4 (30:09):
Dad?
Speaker 1 (30:09):
Did?
Speaker 3 (30:09):
Dude? Okay? Great? Brittany, Oh I good? Hey, everybody loves me.
I'm the goat.
Speaker 4 (30:13):
Well, because that's the other one of the other parts
that spurs it on, not the necessarily negative storylines that
come with family members, because there's certainly plenty of those,
but just the idea that it started to see that
separation again.
Speaker 3 (30:27):
Oh you had a good run.
Speaker 4 (30:28):
Now it's Brady, Brady Brady in a giant gap right,
So from Mahomes maybe a little bit of fuel to
the fire there to get back after it. You look
at the division odds, they're just a minus one ten,
implying about a fifty two percent odds winning Raiders on
the other extreme at seventeen to one, and then both
the Broncos and Chargers sitting about three to one division
(30:51):
wise over under on wins Jason sitting at eleven and
a half, and the Conference they are third behind the
Bills and the Ravens, depending on your source their kind
of neck and neck. Then you have the Chiefs third
at about four and a half to one, and then
all the way down at eleven and one, it become
those Bengals once again.
Speaker 1 (31:11):
Get ready, Here comes the Patrick Mahomes middle finger to her.
Speaker 3 (31:15):
It's coming your way.
Speaker 4 (31:16):
As long as he doesn't get a bunch of muscle
injuries like Caitlin Clark did.
Speaker 3 (31:20):
Oh, what are you doing? Man?
Speaker 1 (31:21):
Why are you chasing the guy?
Speaker 3 (31:22):
What are you doing to them? Come on, dude, can't
do that. Well. The last slam your sucker down. She
got slammed. Now it became the Pagebacker show. Time now
to find out what's trending in the wide world of sports.
Speaker 1 (31:35):
So someone who's been called the Patrick Mahomes of Fox
Sports Radio right because she checks her social media every
day to see if anyone in her family has done anything.
Speaker 3 (31:44):
It's Monty Belanna.
Speaker 1 (31:48):
You know my brother.
Speaker 6 (31:50):
I have two brothers, and one of them has no
social media whatsoever. You couldn't find them if you wanted to.
And the other one, I don't know how social media
savvy he is, so even if they did something, I
wouldn't be able to figure it out. Okay, Yeah, and
let my dad has no idea about social media and
my mom. My mom gets confused on Instagram. I have
to explain to her. No, it's a lot of stuff.
So I don't know if I can find out if
(32:10):
my my family was doing things on the internet.
Speaker 3 (32:14):
They all have burners, and you just don't know, you.
Speaker 6 (32:18):
Know, maybe maybe my brother Gus has a burner.
Speaker 2 (32:21):
Maybe that maybe.
Speaker 6 (32:23):
That's his name is Gustavo Nice.
Speaker 3 (32:28):
I don't know, ye.
Speaker 6 (32:33):
Like that, Gus Gush obviously Gus Gus from Cinderella, exactly exactly.
There's still one baseball game going on, guys. It's the
bottom of the eleventh inning in Arizona between the Reds
and the Diamondbacks, and they are tied at five apiece. Obviously,
the Reds trying to win this one because they're still
in the wild card race when it comes to the
National League. They're one game back of the Mets. Earlier
(32:54):
today the Mets won, but the Red's trying to win
this one again. Bottom of the eleventh inning, tied. The
Diamondbacks just won that one six to five, and here.
Speaker 1 (33:02):
Ooh yeah t bats wait to go, buddy, yeah, once
that lead the Mets having wild.
Speaker 3 (33:08):
Card now batzi one and a half. Two in the
lost column, two in the last column.
Speaker 2 (33:16):
There you go.
Speaker 3 (33:16):
But now for the wildcard.
Speaker 6 (33:18):
Yeah, so the Mets today twenty one hits, Juan Soto
a two run homer. Mets outscored the Braves twelve to seven.
The Padres took Game one in San Diego against the Dodgers'
Boo final score two to one. La though had three hits,
embarrassing two of them came in the ninth inning. They
are now tied to the top of the NL West.
The Red Sox shut out the Yankees one zero. They
are they are now second in the AL East. Brewers
(33:40):
walked it off five to four against the Giants on
a William Contrera's home run. Rangers walked it off four
to three against the Guardians on a Jock Peterson RBI double.
The Tigers defeated the Royal seven to five. Phillies lost
today against the Nationals five to four, and the Cubs
topped the Angels three to two. The Mariners snapped their
five game losing streak as they beat the A's three
to two. Josh Naylor hit his one hundredth career home run.
(34:00):
It was a go ahead home run for Seattle as well,
and the Astros defeated the Orioles ten to seven, and
if olt preseason action four games.
Speaker 5 (34:07):
On Friday.
Speaker 6 (34:07):
The Titans top the Vikings twenty three to twelve. Eagles
held on nineteen to seventeen against the Jets. Brandon Aubrey
hit his sixty four yard field goal, and the Cowboys
defeated the Falcons thirty one to thirteen. Joe Milton ten
of eighteen one hundred and thirty two yards, a touchdown
and one rushing touchdown for Dallas.
Speaker 3 (34:23):
The Bears came back.
Speaker 1 (34:24):
Wait wait, Monci, how long was Michaeh Parson's nap? On
the Chabel.
Speaker 6 (34:27):
No, I'm gonna say it was about I feel like
people's I don't nap, but I feel like people say
that good naps are about what twenty minutes?
Speaker 1 (34:35):
Oh no, good naps are good like two and a
half hours.
Speaker 6 (34:37):
But y'all go ahead in that's in that situation when
there's a lot going on, you probably can't be asleep
for two hours, right, that's true.
Speaker 1 (34:45):
One rem cycle is twenty minutes.
Speaker 6 (34:47):
I think meta mita josey jose twenty twenty ish minutes
on that trainer's table. You know, just enjoy and join
the scenery that it is NFL preseason.
Speaker 1 (34:59):
I mean the goodnes is like a one thirty nap
where you wake up at like a quarter after four.
Speaker 3 (35:03):
Like that's that's like the best.
Speaker 6 (35:05):
Yeah, yeah, I guess I could nap if you're giving
me four hours. I can't nap if you're giving me
like an hour. It takes me forever to fall asleep.
Speaker 1 (35:13):
Oh well, the press problem.
Speaker 3 (35:15):
I don't want to go to sleep, go to sleep,
go to sleep, go to sleep, exactly, that's exactly it.
Speaker 6 (35:19):
Yeah, And the Bears Meat the Chiefs twenty eight to
twenty seven Tice in Beijing, three touchdown passes and did
it two hundred and twelve yards Back.
Speaker 3 (35:26):
To you guys.
Speaker 1 (35:29):
Yes, coming up next, Yes, we break down the quarterback
situation and controversy that just is not going to die
no matter what. That's next right here, Jason and Mike
Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (35:45):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific, Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (35:53):
The Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike Harmon.
Speaker 3 (35:56):
Let's go so.
Speaker 1 (35:59):
The Little Finger Tour. If Patrick Mahomes is coming this year,
get ready. He's be back to being the guy who
was three years ago. It's all laying out for him.
Meanwhile in Chicago, I want to say this first. I
want Harmon to say, Oh, he's a Caleb Williams is
gonna be fine. He's in a really good offense. He's
got the right head coach. You're not seeing nearly the
(36:21):
percentage of the Bears offense that you're gonna see during
the season. There's a reason he was taking number one overall.
He's gonna have a great year. Watched, don't worry about it. However,
that's not gonna help anybody, because for the next ten
to eleven days, Bears Nation is just gonna be full
of anxiety with one foot out the door in the
(36:43):
Caleb Williams era because of bad reports they hear about
him in practice. And Tyson Bagent, who got a press
conference and a contract extension two days ago, like he
was Brock Purty getting the brocalypse extension tonight. Caleb Williams
was fine in the first half, right fine in the
first half against the Chiefs, threw for a touchdown, great
(37:05):
against backups. Tyson bagen comes in throws three touchdowns for
two hundred yards.
Speaker 3 (37:09):
In the second half.
Speaker 1 (37:11):
This is RG three and Kirk Cousins all over again,
like the Bears. And I'm sure a little bit of
the coaching staff and the front office as well as thinking,
all right, are we really sure we have the right
guy in Caleb Williams. You don't do that, You don't
think you really don't think you do if you're giving
your backup quarterback that kind of contract that could wind
up making them the highest paid quarterback in the game.
(37:33):
I'd like to be able to tell you, Toky, I
want to tell you to calm down. Everything's fine. Caleboys
would be great. But you see the last few days,
You see what the what the summer months have been.
No one's gonna believe in Caleb Williams until the games happen,
and even then they might not. And it's gonna be
we want Tyson Bageen. I mean, this is all RG
three and Kirk Cousins and Washington a decade later, and
(37:53):
it's not It's gonna take until Williams does it on
the field over the course of a few games for
people to think, Okay, finally we have the right guy.
Because if his first pass is incomplete opening day, the
get's gonna be get page it ready, warm up, he
warming up, Get him ready, get him in here. Like
I can't get over how much, Uh, it feels like
(38:14):
everything around the Bears is like we're ready to move
on from Caleb Williams. It's not gonna happen. Everything's gonna
be fine. But Mike, I can't convince anybody of that.
I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
Speaker 3 (38:23):
Yeah, I mean you're not gonna convince me that.
Speaker 4 (38:26):
You know, there's the dooming glooms side of it either,
Like I think it's just pragmatism of a guy that
wants to be there a guy that's thankful. If you
got a guy that you give him a two year,
ten million dollar deal and he's breaking down to that level,
that's your guy, right, that's a guy who's who's all
in on what you're doing and what you're selling. And
if you've seen it in the classrooms, like why not
(38:47):
lock him up at the quarterback position? Dollar cost averaging
he and Caleb Williams. You're paying nothing to the room
for the next two years. And guess what if it
does break right, you get a bunch of people knock
knock knocking on your door saying, hey, we'd really like
this Tyson major guy. You know, like the Bears, your
competitive middle of the season, and you've decided, hey, Caleb's
(39:07):
flowing along nicely in Ben Johnson's offense, and these guys
are desperate for a quarterback. Maybe just maybe you go
and you find something in the shopping aisle that'll help
you there. But yeah, I think a lot of it's Look,
we're we're looking for big headlines in the preseason and
and this has constituted a huge one. I still don't
(39:28):
think even at two years, sixteen million dollars that's a
ton of ton of money. I mean, you got other
backups that make some pretty good coin hanging around.
Speaker 1 (39:36):
Well, okay, well Kirk Cousins is different.
Speaker 4 (39:38):
Okay, but I mean he's a different He's a different,
different animal in the in this whole thing I'm just
talking from. If you think you've got a guy that
you want to keep in your building, how many teams
have that luxury to where they look at the number
two guy and say, if we had to go down
this road, it would not be an ad jack failure
(40:00):
and disaster. I'm going on the fact that the Bears
are at that point where they feel like they've got
a guy in Bagent, like, we'd love for this guy
to just be part of what we're doing.
Speaker 3 (40:10):
Let's leave the questions off.
Speaker 4 (40:11):
He's the first guy to get a multi year extensions
to Jake Cutler for crying out loud.
Speaker 1 (40:15):
But look, but that's the thing is this is a
guy that eventually he's he's in the NFL to play.
He wants to play. He doesn't want to I get
the money's there if he knows it, Hey, I'm gonna
get you. No, I want to go free. I want
to get a chance to play somewhere. I want to
get a chance to play. Oh no, but I'll stay
with the bet. You're gonna give me some money. I'm
gonna stay. You think they didn't say, hey, maybe there's
a future for you here as a starting quarterback. You
want to play at some point? Right, You didn't join
(40:37):
to hold a clipboard the entire time you want to play.
Speaker 4 (40:40):
It's got two years Division two Shepherd, get plenty of time,
all right?
Speaker 3 (40:46):
Week six? All right?
Speaker 1 (40:48):
So uh, Jason Smith, Mike car Hey, justin fields take down?
Speaker 3 (40:52):
You can have him back. I'll trade your fields for
Tyson bage in week six. We can do that. I
figured you'd go down on that road.
Speaker 1 (40:59):
Coming up next, the latest crazy chapter in the Jerry
Jones Micah Parsons Cowboy Saga Fox
