(01:06):
the NBA cleared the decks for the Emirates Cup tonight.
The Knicks beat the Spurs. They pull away in the
fourth quarter one twenty four to one. Thirteen, and look,
there's so many things coming off this game, like it's
it's my first real championship.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
It real, long time.
Speaker 1 (01:22):
Man, It's as you just told me a few minutes ago.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
You can wear the gear.
Speaker 3 (01:26):
It's real.
Speaker 1 (01:27):
Don't sit here and tell me five minutes later just
because you want to play Devil's advocate. Oh, it's not
a real championship. Picolane pickolan. Either it's a championship. It's
real to you or I can't.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
Of course you could wear it, doesna mock you chit?
Speaker 1 (01:41):
That's why I said. My whole point was can I
wear it? Or is it not cool to wear Emirates
cup watch?
Speaker 3 (01:46):
Again? You decide you wear orange all the time, I've
already decided you're going down and on cool path or
just my color. I mean generally folks give a little
bit of uh leeway to the burnt orange of the
University of Texas, But Syracuse orange, I mean, that's like
the orange that go and.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
Grab off the fruit stand.
Speaker 1 (02:04):
I kind of feel like tonight, like really like using
this tonight as a not a not a training ground,
but more of a hey, a practice for when the
Knicks actually win. Like I feel like I want to
go out after the show, get really drunk, hang out
with other Knicks fans and just just say things.
Speaker 4 (02:23):
Like, Hey, O, Giana, nob let's do it shot for
Ribvy's so good? Tyler Kollak, Let's do it shot for
me was so Gooday played the final two minutes tonight? Yeah,
let's play go New York, Go New York going the
loud speaker again, let's play let's play back of the
New York groove.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
I don't know who you are, man, but I love
you New Yorkers.
Speaker 1 (02:43):
Man.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
We're together, like I feel like I want to kind
of have that night tonight. Well, let's go over. There's
a bar near the Sony Studios during the weekend. It's
it's a good karaoke joint. Uh And you'll see a
lot of BC list actors and actresses come in. But Yo,
they're gonna be Knicks fans. Are they gonna be there? Going?
Whore's a bunch of people that around here from New York?
Who was this guy drunk a hell? Just talking about
(03:03):
the he's celebrating his night was the NBA championship tonight?
It's not before Christmas? Is it not? I mean it's
not is it tonight?
Speaker 2 (03:10):
I always heard that the NBA doesn't start until Christmas?
Speaker 3 (03:13):
Are they change your mind? So they are they changing
the right? All right? I guess SA maybe they are.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
As long as you say I'm buying.
Speaker 3 (03:21):
They will celebrate whatever the hell you want to celebrate.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
Who what's doing?
Speaker 3 (03:25):
Drink for the next Let's go? You know, I mean,
you can't get people on board. There's a lot of
transplants here in Los Angeles.
Speaker 1 (03:35):
I think you'll be just fine. You know the last
time I did something like that. Go back now, I'm
going back now, can we have?
Speaker 2 (03:43):
I mean, if you want to go to New York,
New Jersey.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
Two thousand and ten, So the first year two thousand
and nine, twenty ten, that's that football season where the Jets,
it was Sanchez's rookie year that went to the naach.
They needed to beat the Colts in the last game
of the regular season to make it to the play
(04:05):
That had hopes. I forget who else they had to
help lose, but that I mean, that's the last time
they made the playoffs. The last two years they made
the playoffs, so they had to hope somebody else lost
and they had to beat the Colts, and the Colts
had already had everything clinched. So Peyton Manning only played
like a half Oh, he did his Queen's wave and
sat down. Yeah, and then and then Jim Sorgi came
in and and so this is this whole thing is
happening over Christmas break right, so over over Christmas holiday.
(04:30):
So Pam and I went back to Detroit for the
holidays to be with her family, and I said, Sunday,
I'm going out to watch this game, like, you know,
her mom doesn't have you know, the the NFL packager,
and this is you know, this is twenty ten, two
thousand and nine. So I said, I'm going to go.
And I go to a bar up the street from
where she from where her mom lived, McCaffrey's this bar
in Downriver, Michigan. So I go to this bar, is
(04:53):
this huge bar. All the games were on everywhere, and
there's like, you know, I like fifty people at bar.
Everybody's watching and it's so exciting because the Jets hadn't
been to the playoffs in like four years. And I'm
watching it all unfold and they start winning in the
second half, and I'm going, oh my god, they're gonna
win this game. They're going to the playoffs. And so
they had this deal at the bar where it was
(05:14):
like for ov splits, right, it was like it was
a it was like a bot. It was like a
bucket of six ov splits for five bucks. I don't
know what that is.
Speaker 3 (05:22):
OV beer. You read OV beer, it's like the split.
It's like it's like it it's like a six out.
Speaker 1 (05:28):
It's like a six ounce bottle of beer. Is what
it happened was o V is the brand, and so
it was ov Splits day. They had beer. They said, hey,
six for five bucks. And I'm like, oh, because it's
you know, it's it's like you know, it's like I said,
it's like six outs. What is it adjusted for inflation?
So I'm like, oh my god, we won and I'm
so excited. And I'm the only one because everybody else's
is is at my wife's you know, mother's house and stuff,
(05:50):
and I'm going but I'm out of like I'm out man,
We're going to the playoffs. So it was I said, hey,
you know what blanket. So he said to the bar
and I go, hey, shoot the bar with ov splits
for everybody. He goes seriously, and I said, yeah, the
Jets won, So you tell everybody that I'm shooting the
bar with ov splits because the Jets won.
Speaker 3 (06:08):
And I'm like, you know, is he gonna do it?
But he rings the bell, he goes everybody, We got
ov splits for everybody on the guy sit at this table.
Because the Jets won. Everybody goes all excited, and everybody
came up to.
Speaker 1 (06:21):
Me and they all thought, I want to bet, like
they all think the guys are coming to me, going, man,
that's a gutsy bet.
Speaker 3 (06:27):
Man. Then you bets in a game here. I said no,
and I didn't bet the Jets. This is my team.
Oh wow wow wow. But everybody thought and after a
while I'm like, I know I should I should play
that off. So people count and go, hey, dude, what
did you know to bet this game? What'd you know?
No one was going to bet the Colts?
Speaker 1 (06:41):
I said, ah, I knew if the Colts, uh, you
know the Colts, We're gonna wind up only playing Peyton
Manning a half game and it was gonna wind up
being the Jets.
Speaker 3 (06:47):
Wow, it's a great call. It's a great and people
are are are are toasted with me. Guys are taking
pictures with me. This is the guy that bought beer
for everybody because graying a bunch of random family albums.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
Who's that guy?
Speaker 1 (06:59):
I don't know that guy is, but U but that
was I think a couple of people and I had
to watch it that I didn't drink too much bea
A couple of people like knew who I was. They
were like, hey, you you're Jason. I'm like, yeah, oh wow,
you nice to meet you. Like, yeah, just one just
reading the one, just reading the ingredients and then well
you had that's seven ounce of the but vienna.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
Splits.
Speaker 1 (07:21):
Yeah, three oduls yeah three. So like that was like
what it would be like like going out Like That's
how exciting it was. And that's kind of how I
feel like tonight again. Because you think about championships like
I have Syracuse in two thousand and three, right, and
I have the hurt paying mellow II.
Speaker 3 (07:38):
The hurt doesn't matter. It's paying players. I mean, every
every coach is yucking it up about it now. They
look at all those old Sez football coaches. How we
used to deliver the money.
Speaker 1 (07:51):
Someone had said to me, If someone had said to
me like all of a sudden, Like in two thousand three,
Syracuse wins the championship and I was out that night
actually watching him with one of my good friends who
went to Kansas.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
Hey, suck it.
Speaker 1 (08:01):
We can't treff if someone had come out to me
like they looked like they were from the future, like
they showed up like with a shaved head and maternal
neck and a long coat and said, congratulations on winning. Yeah,
your next professional championship. Uh huh is going to be
when Carmelo Anthony's son is playing for Syracuse and basketball
(08:21):
and the guy just leaves.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
I'm like, I know what that old man had to say.
That's not happening.
Speaker 3 (08:25):
But then again, that's kind of what happens right there,
right the next championship. Mellows Kid played for Syracuse this
year and the next win. All right, there we go.
I feel like we need to have like an updated
version of a Christmas Carol with you and you're a fandom.
We can shoot that. I found this cool camera. It's
like two hundred bucks that it makes it look like
it's an old like seventies film. Yeah, so we can
(08:48):
shoot it that way. Okay, yeah, no, that'd be good.
That would be good. Holiday holiday Holiday twenty twenty six
coming soon.
Speaker 1 (08:54):
It's tough, man, I mean, look, Knights like tonight, like again,
I don't have a lot of championships. I mean, I
go back, it's it's it's Syracuse and three Carolina Hurricanes
in two thousand and six. Really Syracuse winning the basketball
tournament and that's it.
Speaker 3 (09:08):
Right.
Speaker 1 (09:08):
The Mets made it to the World Series, uh in
twenty fifteen, made to the NLCS a year ago, But
titles like you're talking, I mean, and I'm New York
or my teams. You would think that my New York
teams would win at some point. No, the Knicks haven't
made the Jet time made the playoffs in fifteen years.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
Man, you know they're not making it next year. It's
going to be sixteen years.
Speaker 1 (09:26):
So all of my teams, it's like it's like wow, okay,
so a night like tonight, like really, this is this
is the this is my third championship since two thousand
that I've had and it's a mid season basketball championship again.
Speaker 3 (09:40):
You know, we take our ws as we can, right.
I'm the same way. I get emotional at all of
the wins along the way regular season stuff and hard fought.
But certainly I go back to when the White Sox
won in two thousand and five. You have the White
Swiss at Blackhawks have two Blackhawks. Right, let me have
a cheat. Dare you? How else would they have beaten
the King? You have? But you have more?
Speaker 1 (10:03):
You have the White Hawks. You have you have the
White white Hawks. You have the White Hawks. Here's got
to be a team somewhere called the White Hawks.
Speaker 3 (10:10):
Right are you?
Speaker 2 (10:11):
In the seven ounce?
Speaker 3 (10:13):
You have the White Sox. You o four? You have five?
Speaker 1 (10:17):
You have two black Hawks. Yeah, right, cups and six bulls.
Six but yeah, but you don't have any bulls past
two thousands.
Speaker 2 (10:24):
No, that's it. Eight. I mean that's it.
Speaker 3 (10:27):
Yeah, that's the end of it. So you have so
you have three. So we've had the one ups, right,
so we've had some other other experiences, but overall, and
then you get demerits for the Cubs winning one.
Speaker 2 (10:38):
That's true, but you did take You had the Bears
in the Super Bowl.
Speaker 3 (10:42):
Yeah, and the most exciting beginning to a game ever,
Devin has to runs the opening kickoff back. They do
a pretty good job on Manning and the Colts, but
they don't have enough.
Speaker 1 (10:53):
What's the history of the Bears From twenty ten, Devin
Hester ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown and
then a few years later Caleb Williams has the Bears
of the number two seed in the NFC.
Speaker 2 (11:04):
But like right now, it's it's the excitement of what
could be right?
Speaker 3 (11:07):
Why don't we go win the whole damn thing right
with the chaos going on, and it's a nice short
drive up to Santa Clara, which would be very nice.
But all of that is, you know, the emotions are
real like wins. You know, we live and die with
these squads in week eight, you know, week twelve, like
at the heart of it, we get into this business
and everybody that does it, unless they're truly mercenaries, got
(11:31):
any it because they're fans of a team, a player,
something that captivated your imagination, led you to a playground,
the hardwood, whatever.
Speaker 2 (11:41):
And yeah, you live and die with it. So, yeah,
you celebrate the hell out of this title.
Speaker 3 (11:45):
Yeah, I mean, I don't know how to act. It's
been so close as you'll ever get. It's been so mungst.
The team really wanted the championship down and cut, but
you got confetti hopefully we had someone there on the
scene that could have gotten you some of that championship confetti.
Speaker 2 (11:58):
You're looking at price of hats and shirts.
Speaker 3 (12:01):
I mean, it's got me.
Speaker 1 (12:02):
Look I've had big wins obviously. Look just last year
the Mets beating the Brewers, Alonzo's home run and going
to the going to the NLCS, Like.
Speaker 2 (12:10):
I've everybody people writing that said you killed you.
Speaker 1 (12:13):
But but championships, man, Like, don't I don't have that now?
I got I got a championship. Now is it's like
two and a half championships Syracuse Carolina and it's like
two and a half championships. Well, I don't know where
it is on the fractional math of it all, but
I mean you're excited about it. I mean this is
equal footing with winning the NBA title. Are you gonna
get a giant piece of cake or something after once?
(12:34):
I mean you celebrate Sparklers. No, he's going to pop
out of it.
Speaker 3 (12:38):
I mean I think I think the cheesecake factories still
open the weekend. We could send someone to go find
something for you there. But I mean, it's it's just
you take it as it is.
Speaker 5 (12:48):
Right.
Speaker 3 (12:48):
They made a tournament you may not like it, it
counts as a championship. There's a banner, right, The Lakers
hung a banner, didn't they. Yeah, I mean they also
hoisted seventeen other ones. Yeah, also hot, yeah, I mean
like but yeah, but they still put one up that,
which is I think more damning if you have seventeen
real ones and then you put this one out best
(13:11):
team Cup championship team of all time the next this
year the Lakers two years ago, eight seven, seven, ninety
nine on Fox.
Speaker 2 (13:18):
Be careful, he's gonna start getting phone calls.
Speaker 3 (13:21):
All those Atlantic Division titles you guys hung, Oh yeah,
we have, Well we have to, dude.
Speaker 1 (13:25):
It was the Knicks were bereft of a lot when
I was a kid, Like I didn't start watching basketball
till the glory days were over. Like when I started
watching the Knicks, they look We talked about the late
Sugar Ray Richardson, who passed away a few weeks ago,
one of the best Knicks players of all time. Like
that's when I started to watching the Knicks. In the
mid to late seventies, when they were awful, Right, it
was passed the title of sixty nine and seventy three,
(13:47):
and they were really bad for a long time until
they got you in.
Speaker 2 (13:50):
Does the Garden just have a bunch of banners?
Speaker 3 (13:52):
When Billy Joel kept breaking his consecutive sellout streak, It's
all just pictures.
Speaker 2 (13:58):
The piano man a different points.
Speaker 1 (14:01):
Exit out, Vota Fresca, Exit, Swollen Dome, Jason Math Mike

The knickxer E Cup Champs, Fox Sports Radio, The Jason
Smith Show with my best friend Mike Harmon.
Speaker 3 (15:26):
You go back, Mike Harmon to nineteen ninety, go.
Speaker 1 (15:28):
Back thirty five years, my six teams, two hundred and
ten total seasons, three championships, and yet I still love sports.
Two hundred and ten seasons.
Speaker 3 (15:38):
But that's just it. Take the hits and keep going.
It's like life, man, three champions I'm not even gonna
do the whole Rocky quote. We can go down movies, TV, whatever,
find your inspirational quote, go biblical if you need to.
But the reality is we keep coming back for more
because hope is the best and worst of things. Oh
it's dangerous.
Speaker 2 (15:58):
It is dangerous.
Speaker 3 (16:00):
That's completely dangerous. It's the side I always talk about
in Shawshank. Yes, it can't be the best to comple
keeps you moving forward, but yeah, it's sports. Is that
it's a living, breathing organism, and every move begets the
the hope that all right, this is the big change.
Speaker 2 (16:17):
I mean you were excited when Aaron Glenn showed up. Yeah,
and a day for the days.
Speaker 3 (16:22):
Those are the days. But that's okay, this is what
I have again.
Speaker 2 (16:26):
I have the knicks in this moment, you have the knicks.
Speaker 3 (16:31):
You've got the camaraderie, the brotherhood, the excitement and that
they express for each other, like after the game, like
it was a very just want to wrap him in
a hug because they loved each other so much.
Speaker 1 (16:43):
It's it's a it's a it's an alien thought to
me to be watching them celebrate, wearing the T shirts,
holding up the cup, doing the interviews everywhere, like it's
it's such.
Speaker 3 (16:55):
A foreign thing.
Speaker 1 (16:57):
Like it again, it feels like a real championship, Like
it's it's it's them winning a championship. I'm seeing one
of my main teams win a championship.
Speaker 3 (17:05):
Which is which is? I really I don't know how
to act. It's a it's it's weird.
Speaker 2 (17:09):
Look, look, it's cheesy as hell.
Speaker 3 (17:11):
Karl Anthony Towns is holding up there. Yeah, true, but
you saw it like he carried that thing that was
a kid. Yeah, that ducked underneath his arm like he
was walking around like you will not.
Speaker 2 (17:21):
Touch my child.
Speaker 3 (17:22):
You think you walked around going, yeah, you've traded for Giannis.
Speaker 2 (17:24):
Now you think you still need Giannis instead of me?
Speaker 3 (17:27):
Yell, well, there is some of that, Let's see, because
you were you had him gone a week ago. Let's see.
But now that they're champions, you're all excited. But yeah,
Joe pat fitzhiw, you just got hired at Michigan State.
One of the things that was always one good clean
American fund. That's how he described football. The other go
want to know, right, that's your goal each day, each game,
but just life in general. Right, But when you lay
(17:48):
your head down at night, you hope that it was
a better day and and whatever you experienced, you went
one to know you found some things that you can
hang your hat on to say I impacted somebody positively,
my job positively.
Speaker 2 (18:02):
The person on the street, whatever.
Speaker 3 (18:04):
And for you today, you go want to know, Now,
at the grand scale, will anybody remember it as a
as you put it, quote unquote, real championship.
Speaker 1 (18:12):
No, it's a real championship. We're gonna hang a banner
at MSG tomorrow for that.
Speaker 3 (18:17):
You should you kidding celebrate the hell out of that,
right because in the moment, that's what we've got.
Speaker 1 (18:23):
Now outside of this, now, the Emirates Cup is over right,
it's a big deal. The Knicks win, they win in Vegas,
they beat the Spurs.
Speaker 3 (18:30):
And now you have six months until you'll crown another
And I'm gonna wait all the way until the end
of June for this time.
Speaker 1 (18:36):
And again, there's no doubt that the Emirates Cup has
been a success. It's been a success for the NBA.
It's a great addition to the calendar. Now that being said,
there's lots of stuff that we can improve on it.
And and and number one, wow haveing.
Speaker 3 (18:53):
It in Vegas?
Speaker 1 (18:55):
Yeah, I don't know, man, I mean you you you
can't have a championship where it looks like you're afraid
to show the crowd because it's a neutral site crowd.
And are people gonna go to Vegas for a long
weekend near Christmas? Like that's the whole thing is like,
think about what you do. I like the fact you're
doing it near the holidays. It feels like a holiday tournament.
It's fun it kind of feels like, hey, you know
(19:16):
this week, like the NBA is going away before the
Christmas break. Meanwhile, it's not. But it kind of has
a great feel that, hey, we're having we're crowning a
champion close to the Christmas holiday, right, So that's good.
But you can't have a situation where it looks like, hey,
this is a big deal and we're afraid to show
you the crowd and we're gonna really turn the lights
all the way down, because yeah, it's the embarrassing that
(19:38):
we can't get a full crowd as into it as
the players were as into it, as as the teams were,
as great as it looked on TV, and you could
tell these teams wanted to win.
Speaker 3 (19:47):
Say what you want. The Spurs and the Knicks wanted
this game.
Speaker 7 (19:51):
Man.
Speaker 1 (19:51):
You saw the way they played. You saw how they
were thumping their chest and all all the different times
parts of the game. You saw the way the Knicks
were giddy on the sideline celebrate is the clock ticked out,
It's like the end of a championship. Both teams wanted this.
The Emirates Cup is a great idea, but we.
Speaker 3 (20:06):
Talk about, you know, just scheduling and trying to give
it some level of gravitas, right in terms of your
fans being able to be there, give it at the
festive and raucous environment that you still want, especially when
there's stakes to it in this case. You know, we
just keep coming back to everybody got a nice bonus, right,
It's a nice Christmas bonus, not a fruit you know,
(20:27):
Jelly of the Month club, not any of the Hey,
Clark Griswold is going and taking Brian Doyle Murray hostage
or any of that stuff. But it's just trying to
get it together, right. We had the Bowl out here
in LA this weekend. It was Washington and Boise State.
Now my daughter because of the short time he couldn't
get off work, but she's headed to Boise State in
(20:48):
a couple of weeks. They gotta take her.
Speaker 2 (20:50):
And it was, hey, that would be cool.
Speaker 3 (20:51):
When the matchups are kind of getting announcedent and you
look at the day, it's like, all right, well they
had six days to mobilize. Now, maybe you were able
to drive it from I haven't done that mapping, but
otherwise it's a pretty decent haul. You're not being You're
not probably going to be able to make it so
people were making fun of attendance, like literally, those bulls
got announced on Sunday, okay, and here's the game the
(21:14):
next Saturday. In this case, all right, we advanced and
you get to go to Vegas for a weekend. It's
like it's the holiday season. Air rates are high Vegas
hotel rates. We've been chronicled that a bunch on the
show that unless you've gotten in it has not been.
Speaker 2 (21:29):
Cheap at the resort fees or whatever else.
Speaker 3 (21:33):
It now becomes all right, well we had a Christmas
trip plan them, I gotta go see the semi finals
of a December tournament for the next It becomes a
very difficult proposition to sell it for any team, which is.
Speaker 2 (21:44):
Why we had the seat filling.
Speaker 3 (21:47):
Yes, and we talked about it the one Iota, like
that's literally what you had seat fillers. For those that
missed the story, we covered it on Friday, reiterated here
is there's a site where you can go for game
show attendant sitcoms and everything here in Los Angeles. They
do events in New York and in other cities as
as dictated, but mostly it's a Los Angeles proposition of hey,
(22:10):
we need people to come and see a taping of
insert talk show here, like they do it for Jimmy
Kimmel is probably their biggest one. And then they have
the outdoor concert or events. But they did that for
the semi finals and for the finals.
Speaker 1 (22:25):
Seed Piller the Kramer when he was a seat filler, right,
come in and show up so it looks good on
television basically, So for the champion Knicks, let's let's let's
let's make this event even better than it is, right, because.
Speaker 3 (22:38):
You've had it start out well. We talked to Rick
Buker last hour and I say, hey, you know, do
this for the two teams that make it to the
to the finals.
Speaker 1 (22:45):
The winning team seeded no lower than sixth in the playoffs. Right,
if you're higher that you higher than that button, no
matter what your record is, no lower than six real
big stakes for winning the E Cup. If you're the
team that makes it to the to the the E
Cup finals and loses, you're guaranteed to be in the
playoffs somewhere one through ten. Right, the lowest you'll be
(23:06):
is a ten seed getting in.
Speaker 2 (23:07):
Right.
Speaker 1 (23:07):
That there's your stakes and how you want to make
it worth more. Now, the other part of it. And
this is a really big thing.
Speaker 3 (23:13):
Right. The three big changes is and this is this
is the biggest one.
Speaker 1 (23:18):
Is that it needs to be done in one continuous tournament,
to have it played where hey, this is an e
Cup night and then you play a couple of games,
and then the next week there's another e Cup night,
and then a week later you play your third E
Cup game and you're trying to figure out the standings.
It's messy, and I get what they're trying to do,
(23:40):
and you know, look, to make an omelet, you got
to break some eggs, and this was the style they
were going in.
Speaker 3 (23:43):
I think you could have done a little bit, a little.
Speaker 1 (23:46):
Bit different, but maybe to have something like this come in,
that's a big that's a big change. You want to
do it slowly and until you get to the right formula.
So the right way to do it, quite honestly, is
to make it its own continuous three week tournament. After
(24:06):
let's say you play the first twenty games in the
NBA season, right or whatever you want to play. You
want to play it around the holidays, around Christmas time. Great,
that's awesome, right, that's pretty good because then you can
you can play it around Christmas and then you can
have the Christmas Day kickoff for the real you have
Opening Night, then you have the E Cup tournament, then
you have the Christmas kicking it off, right, so you
have Opening Night like three times over the course. If
(24:28):
you do it the season like this, where it becomes
a destination, the people can plan it if they're NBA fans.
Speaker 2 (24:35):
Right, you have it where it is, so you play
that you you take a break.
Speaker 1 (24:40):
Okay, here we are twenty and just like in soccer, right,
just because you're looking to juice up the regular season,
which gets very tedious, and then you go and you
everybody plays their four games and then from there you
play a you get to down to sixteen. Let's just say,
like the top couple of teams have buys to get
you send to everybody and then to make get down
to sixteen teams and then you have single elimination from
(25:02):
the Sweet sixteen down to the Final four down to
the E Cup Championship. Right that that's kind of the
best way to do it, because hey, it's okay to
borrow a little bit from college basketball, because you are
borrowing from the greatest postseason tournament that any of us
have ever seen. And that's the college basketball field of
sixty four to sixty eight tournament. Like, you get to
a sweet sixteen and get down to the championship is
pretty cool. Win and go home, winn and go home,
(25:24):
winn and go home. So if you do that, you
amp up the importance of the tournament. Taking a break
is a big thing. Let everybody focus on this now.
I don't have to worry about the other games. Is
this an Emirates Cup night game?
Speaker 7 (25:35):
Is?
Speaker 3 (25:36):
Why is the floor this way?
Speaker 1 (25:37):
It's very jumbled to say we're going forward with the
regular season, but then we're taking little jags here and there.
Ecup game here, ecup game here. I mean, I don't
look at the standings out of okay.
Speaker 3 (25:48):
Where are they? What what's the next record in the
group stage the Tuesday or Friday or every other Wednesday.
Speaker 2 (25:55):
I mean, yeah, I think you have shown.
Speaker 3 (25:56):
That you can do that now.
Speaker 1 (25:59):
And they'll play the early games at people's courts, right like,
still play. Here's what the tournament's gonna be. And each
team plays four games, and you know, the Knicks play
two at home, two on the road. The Spurs play
two at home, two on the road. It's part of
the NBA schedule. And then you get to the sixteen
teams and then okay, now we're getting down to the
championship and you have the stakes at the end. You
(26:20):
have the money for the winning teams, you have the
playoff rewards for the teams, and suddenly now you're into something.
Now you're really into something. For a couple of teams,
you'll be playing more games. Yeah, but if you make
it to the championship again, you're guaranteed the playoffs, so
it's not that big a deal that you're playing three
extra games. For the other teams that lose in the
sweet sixteen, you're playing one extra game and you get
(26:41):
home and you get rust because we have to play
out the rest of this championship. So it's really only
a couple of teams that are gonna play an extra
game or two, and two of them are gonna get
rewards at the end. So if you do something like that,
it's a much cleaner situation. You know, even Rick Buker's
idea of extending the season and take longer breaks and
(27:01):
make basketball an all year round thing, kind of like
MLS which just ended. But you know, they come to
training camp beginning of the year. Right, So it's a
really it's it's an all year round thing. And I
think that's okay because guys are still gonna play basketball
all year round. It's still gonna happen. If you just
want to do it and you take longer breaks, I
think that's pretty cool. But just to to some way,
you have to make this an all encompassing thing, and
(27:22):
you have to make it its own event because that's
what's going to cut through in the end, because that's
what we're conditioned for. You know, in your when you
do certain things with soccer, where you hear, here's an
FA Cup game. This is not we're taking a break
from this game. That's the way they've all grown up.
They've been following it like we know that, Hey, it's
a tournament time, it's playoff time. These are the teams playing.
It's a little bit easier for us to stomach. And
(27:43):
I think because you have set up the Emirates Cup
and now it helps when teams like the Lakers win,
when teams like the Knicks win and gain a lot
of attention to it. Right, the Bucks won last year,
the Thunder lost in the finals last year. Went on
to win the NBA title. Now that you've set this up,
you have big market teams win, you can get to
that next level and go, Okay, this is what we're
doing for the E Cup. So now we're doing this
(28:04):
from now on and it's all better things for the players.
It's more for the teams, and it would be better
for the fans to watch as well.
Speaker 3 (28:10):
Yeah, I think a lot of it comes down to
we get into the talk of money, and the bonuses
are great, but you get back into the CBA and
wanted to make sure there's equity in terms of these
games played right. Because you say it's not a big
deal two or three extra Tell that to the folks
in the load management business. Tell that to the like
(28:31):
where we already have that problem. And that's something we
address with Rick Buker. And find the podcast after the
show wherever you get your audio download to give it
five stars, send it to friends and family. It's the
holiday holiday, holiday season. It's a great gift, but it's
just that idea of trying to make sure you're finding
that balance because those extra games, if you have a
title in hand, you know, we always wonder down the
(28:53):
stretch how many teams are playing out the string for
better for worse. Right where we see benchings, we see
guys taking nights off and it becomes the race rest
period ahead of the playoffs or the race to the playoffs.
And if you play the extra three games, now that's
a lot of wear and tear on the body. So
making sure you're getting compensated because right now it's extra,
(29:17):
it's in the standings and it's just that one game
the title that doesn't count, which is too bad if
you would have gone off for say a forty five
point performance and it doesn't count in terms of it
because the count towards MVP considerations all start. I don't know,
but and all this that the other. But if you're
playing those extra games, you're trying to make sure you're
(29:39):
still balancing right with the rest of the league. If
suddenly it's like, wait, we suck in this tournament and
we get three days, they're gonna play three extra games. Cool,
all the better. So making sure you don't create some
inequities that don't exist. Yeah, at rights are trying to
figure out that balance.
Speaker 1 (29:56):
But now it's time to take it. The first three
years we've seen it, what's what' done. Well, now it's
a next level thing that you can take it to
and there's still gonna be adjustments and tweaks at that.
Let me look look at the college football playoff situation.
We're tweaking that every five minutes ings, so it's okayut
on the field. You add some bear traps and some
other things that you have to navigate it and be
great time now to find out what's trending in the
(30:17):
wide world of sports. Well, we know what's trending. The
Knicks are the Emirates Cup champions and Isaac Lohenkrawn has
the latest on this story.
Speaker 8 (30:25):
The dominant story of the day, the week, the month,
the year, julyp Somel Silo. You know what so is
I and so is the rest of America. However, the
facts are these and the NBA Cup Championship game on
Tuesday night the New York Knicks if either the San
Antonio Spurs one twenty four to one thirteen. Spurs led
(30:48):
the contest after three quarters ninety four to eighty nine,
but the Knicks outscored him in the fourth quarter thirty
five to nineteen. Og Nnobi led the Knicks with twenty
eight points performance that will go down and Nick's history
alongside the likes of Herb Williams, Bruno Sundof, Chris Dudley,
Johnny Newman, and Pat Comming.
Speaker 2 (31:08):
Oh, I used to love that.
Speaker 1 (31:09):
My favorite name, my favorite name of all time for
Marv Rolbert to say, was always.
Speaker 3 (31:14):
Johnny Newman from way Downtown. Yes.
Speaker 8 (31:18):
Well, speaking of affirmative celebrations, let's listen to how it
sounded as delirious Knicks fans took to the streets of
Manhattan to celebrate winning the NBA Cup title.
Speaker 2 (31:36):
You ah, look, what about that rat business you were
talking about? You hear that somebody hawks and horn? That
was for the Knicks.
Speaker 8 (31:46):
I guess it was a pretty well behaved It was
for the next I didn't.
Speaker 2 (31:50):
Have to grease up any polls or anything.
Speaker 3 (31:52):
No, just.
Speaker 8 (31:55):
Not a Philadelphia celebration. They were remarkably restrained apparently elsewhere.
Speaker 3 (32:00):
Name.
Speaker 8 (32:00):
Junior running back Jeremiah Love announced on IG on Tuesday
evening that he's declaring for the NFL Draft, coming off
a Heisman Trophy finalist campaign ran for nearly fourteen hundred
yards with eighteen rushing touchdowns. Gonna be some cleanup on
the streets of Manhattan tomorrow morning. Back to you guys,
thank you.
Speaker 3 (32:17):
Very much all the headline of the New York Post,
go ahead, Harmon, read it.
Speaker 2 (32:21):
It's cup to you.
Speaker 3 (32:24):
New York, New York banner night for Nicks as a
ko Spurs to win in season.
Speaker 1 (32:32):
Turney, it is a championship night Here on Fox Sports Radio,
Jason Smith Mike Harmon live from the studios.
Speaker 3 (32:39):
Coming up next.
Speaker 1 (32:40):
Hey, the big takeaway from the Emirates Cup for both
of the teams tonight. We go back to a big
bull prediction we made before the season started. That boy,
I'm feeling really good about right now.
Speaker 2 (32:53):
That's next, right here, Jason to Mike. Fox Sports Radio.
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific, Fox.
Speaker 1 (33:08):
Sports Radio, The Jason Smith Show with my best friend
Mike Harmon. This Christmas, the next gave me a ship
and they won it all tonight they beat.
Speaker 7 (33:21):
The Spurs the third time in my lifetime my team
has one a champion. Shit, yep, you got us out
a ship. I got a ship, man, I got a ship,
not a chip, a ship.
Speaker 3 (33:38):
We caught a ship.
Speaker 1 (33:41):
Next to the last ship Sales next win the e Cup.
They beat the Spurs one one thirteen. Look, we talk
about the how big of a night it was for
the NBA. Look, it's the only story, the only game.
Everything in Twitter, everything trending has to do with this game.
Speaker 8 (33:56):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (33:57):
Now for the teams themselves, right, we're gonna hear from
sp Lee coming up in a few minutes, because yeah,
let's put Spike Lee on the air.
Speaker 3 (34:04):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (34:05):
For the Spurs, the Spurs didn't need this as much
as the Knicks did. The Spurs are a terrific young team.
They get Wemby back coming off the bench tonight. Uh,
limited minutes, but boy, you still look really really good.
There's a reason why before the year started I said, hey,
my two dark horse picks for the finals, because you know,
I don't like to remind people that I said this.
(34:28):
Pistons in the East, Spurs in the West. Right, and
I'm feeling great about I'm I'm on a long shot
heater right now with those predictions. The Spurs, they're young,
they're talented. Wemby's become the best player in the NBA
just has to stay healthy. And you could see tonight
even though we're going to talk about the death of
the Knicks. How deep the say the depth depth? Oh
(34:52):
this was thet well, it could be the end, it
could be as good as it gets. It could be
the depth of the Knicks. Did you say, Joe side
show Bob uh. But the Spurs, naturally, they've been able
to accumulate a lot of talent, and you saw over
the course of the game tonight where Steph Castle was
(35:13):
able to spur them on. Wenby picked it up a
little bit de Aaron Fox. Listening to Aaron Fox talk
after the game, you can tell that this kind of
solidified what they thought. Hey, you make it this far,
you know you're a team that can compete for a championship.
This was more of a the Spurs, I think, realize
how good they are. They really realized that being Wemby driven,
having the best all round player in the NBA, that's
(35:35):
gonna be something that carries you to titles because we
watched Lebron do it for a long time, watch the
best players in the NBA carry their teams to the
NBA finals. So I feel like the Spurs already knew
it would have been a validation for them to win
but I don't think they needed as much as the
Knicks did. I think the Spur the Spurs are terrific
young team and and and and they're just going to
(35:55):
get better and better, and if Wenby stays healthy, they're
going to stay at the top of the West. I mean,
maybe they're not gonna in the thunder down the stretch,
but they should easily be one of the top three
seeds overall.
Speaker 3 (36:04):
It shouldn't even be close. Yeah, we've talked a lot
about organizational stability in all sports, right as we've worked
together here at Fox Sports Radio these years, and and
how you hold up different organizations, and there just is
the different levels all right, of continuity, consistency. Make fun
of the Mike Tomlin Steeler stuff. People have that as
(36:26):
low hanging fruit, but most teams, most fans would kill
to have that level of all right, we're gonna be competitive,
and then it's just a matter of degree of whether
we can get over in a given year. For the Spurs,
we go back over two decades that they've had to
bottom out. They've had a couple of bad seasons. Obviously,
that's why you've been able to draft at the top.
(36:47):
But with some smart trades along the way. It gave
you extra chips to go and add these pieces. You
go and get Daron Fox. You've got a veteran presence
and you're testing yourself against the best.
Speaker 2 (36:59):
And that's where we're at.
Speaker 3 (37:01):
When you have a game against OKAC and they beat them,
and look, it was on the same night that John
Cena tapped out, So a lot of folks wondering, Hey,
conspiracies and getting over and all those kind of thing.
It doesn't matter. You have them arrive at a championship
of vent marquis standalone kind of moment where you're saying,
(37:22):
we're among the best. They are currently fifth in the
West for championship odds. Ok, see Denver, Houston, the Lakers,
and then you've got the Spurs sitting at twenty five to.
Speaker 1 (37:34):
One with a healthy Wenby all the way, it's probably higher,
but it really the best part for the Spurs is
that they're not the boring Spurs. Right when the Spurs
won every couple of years with Popovich, when it was
Tim Duncan and Jenobi Lee and Tony Parker, yeah they
were really good.
Speaker 3 (37:53):
They were kind of boring.
Speaker 1 (37:54):
This is not a boring team and if you want
to compare this to who the Spurs are really when
you want to say, okay, just how good are they
the Bucks in their heyday with Jannis right, think about
how good they were top of the Eastern Conference. Ever
they won the title one year. Now they're on the
other side of the mountain. Jannis wants out this Spurs
team right now. With Wemby as your best player and
(38:16):
Yannis as your best player in Milwaukee, Wemby might not
quite be at the like, look, Wemby's becoming the best
player in the league. He might not be at the
level Yannis was when Jannis was doing it by himself.
Speaker 2 (38:27):
Yeah, but he can actually shoot.
Speaker 1 (38:29):
But this team, this Spurs team, is better than any
team that Yannis had in the East with the Bucks.
This team is way more talented than your top to bottom. Like, look,
Dylan Harper is Fantasy's off the bench for twenty one tonight.
This is a topic in the draft, Like, this is
a deeper, more talented team than anything that he had.
(38:50):
And the Bucks ruled the top of the East for
a long time and we're just getting to the era
of Wemby and the Spurs where it's been a great run,
and it's a great run this year for Oklahoma City.
But it's gonna be get out of my way. It's
wenby time. Now that that's how goods team is going
to be.
Speaker 3 (39:06):
But that's the beauty and we can make fun of
the You know, we talked about the Lakers winning the
mid season Trophy and all that stuff. Uh, the Clippers
are going to give their pick, which will be a
top five pick, to the OKC Thunder, so they're not
going anywhere. So like the battle is set up for
a decade between SGA and Chat against Victor and whoever
(39:28):
he brings for the ride.
Speaker 1 (39:31):
I don't forget about Ka Like we we are getting back.
We are getting back into a golden era in the
Western Conference. Good don't forget Jokich is still there. So
we are getting back to a golden era in the
Western Conference.
Speaker 3 (39:41):
I like that.
Speaker 1 (39:42):
You want to have the Lakers still there's a Luca
Lakers having a great it's fun to watch exit at
about a Fresca exit swollen dome coming up next. Why
the Knicks had to have this championship?
Speaker 3 (39:53):
Wait what
