So the second marquee game of the night, we get
to the first game of the night in about fifteen minutes.
Go New York, Go New York, but San Antonio putting
the finishing touches of an absolute drubbing on the Dallas Mavericks.
(01:16):
The debut for Cooper Flag and the season debut for
Victor Wembinyama. I think you could say that there are
one hundred and eighty degrees from each other. Cooper Flag
tonight ten points, ten rebounds, so numbers not bad. Hey,
four out of thirteen from the floor. He did not
score in the first half. He is minus twenty nine
(01:38):
for the night. Victor wembin Yama forty points, fifteen boards,
three blocks. He is plus thirty one as the Mavericks
lead at Mavericks Trail San Antonio by thirty. Okay, now
really quick on this, because look, Flag's debut is rough.
(01:59):
We talked about last night when I said, hey, we
want some long shot NBA Finals teams because I was
feeling it following the my Colts long shot bold prediction
in the AFC of the last spring, and I said,
this could be the year Wenby becomes the best player
in the game. They have a lot of young talent,
(02:20):
They're ready to win. Now you're talking about it. They
added the number two overall draft pick in the game
as well. This could wind up being a really big
leap for the Spurs and yes, beating the Mavericks tonight. Look,
they played Cooper Flag at point guard. I think maybe
game a little bit too much to start the game.
But wemby forty and fifteen. Forget by the end of
(02:41):
the year, by the end of October, we're going to
be saying he's now the best player in the game.
You look at some of the things he was able
to do tonight, stuff that as good as he was
because again, at his height, nobody can do what he has.
The skills he came in, That's why he was that
big a deal. Seeing him make some of his play
tonight that he's not made this first, you know, the
(03:01):
first last year plus in the league, Like it is
eye opening seeing some stuff that he is able to do,
and he was absolutely unstoppable tonight for San Antonio. All
of a sudden, get those San Antonio championship bonds while
you can, because man, nights like this not gonna be
that low for long. Fifty to one as we sit
here tonight, you know, part of it for a guy
(03:22):
that handled the ball out he only had one assist.
Can I go after that?
Speaker 4 (03:26):
Wow? Wow?
Speaker 2 (03:28):
We go.
Speaker 1 (03:29):
You're like Rob Parker hating on show Hao Todi just
one assist? Come on, Wemby, Why don't you make your
teammates better? It's all I'm asking. I watched the game.
He handled the ball. I did not handle the ball
a lot. It means nobody hit a shot. It's not
his fault.
Speaker 3 (03:46):
But what are you gonna do?
Speaker 1 (03:47):
But yeah, put me into that same class. When are
you talking more points for Wemby tonight or more passing
yards for the Jets on Sunday?
Speaker 3 (03:57):
Yeah? Well, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (03:59):
I mean, look, he's still working here, although he should
be sitting down. He got to forty. Yeah, Sunday should
probably just tap him out. Don't need him anymore, don't
need Wemby anymore. I mean, look, it's it's I know, yes,
it's Opening Night, it's one game, but you see the
way Wemby is playing, and he knew at some point
he was going to ascend to that. I thought beginning
of last year, all right, by the end of this year,
he's gonna be the he'll be one of the top
(04:21):
three players in the NBA. And he was certainly on
that path, but then he had he had the bad
luck with the with the the thrombosis and the blood
clot which is, you know, a medical condition. We're all hoping, okay,
hope he's okay. First, when he thought he came out,
we thought the beginning of the season might be in
jeopardy for him. So but he's always been in that timeline.
It may just be here because when that happens, it
(04:42):
happens fast, and that time may be here now well.
And it's one of those things we've talked about a
lot as related to the Otani situation of doesn't mean
that there might not have been another player or two
that could have have done something. And there's certainly points
in history. We've celebrated Bartolo Cologne's home run. I mean,
guys have hit home runs. Guys were decent hitting pitchers,
(05:04):
Oral Hersheizer was a good hitter when he played you
know your nemesis. All of that to say, here we
are in twenty twenty five, and what do you get
a chance to do? What is special and what stands out?
And we've watched Nikola Jokics. We're looking, we're always looking
and thirsting for something new. Right, you're talking about MVP
(05:25):
voting fatigue in each League, and why for a hot
minute in September, regardless of what the overall reach of
statistics were, it was all right, cal Rawley's gonna come
and take that award from Aaron Judges like he's not.
But for a minute, it look you know, I mean
that gained a lot of groundswell of hey, he should,
he should. And if you got everybody to add the
(05:48):
defensive stuff that Rolly did with a higher coefficient, that
maybe it tips to scales, but that's not the way
it works. Likewise with when min Yama, to your point,
he's eight feet tall, he grew a couple more inches,
like the bit he's actually eight feet tall now, Yeah,
like the Gritch's heart. He grew a couple of inches
here by dominating the Mavericks. So it's going to have
(06:09):
that extra appeal to it, that extra feel. Right, That's
why Jokic, you know, distributing as he is he does
and playing so light on his feet for a guy
that big, has been a standout. It's like, well, that
goes to the next phase of Victor wemb Benyama uh
and his lankiness and his ability to step back and
(06:30):
hit a three and distribute. Now it's a matter of
his teammates finishing the job to get that assist total up.
But he was dominant tonight. And in the low post,
who's getting in his way right lively? And these guys
stood no chance on lobs and anything getting down into
the low post. He looks like it looks like like
(06:50):
one of those videos of of old time basketball where
the one guy, where one guy is like way taller
than everybody else and it's like you can't stop him, right.
It's it's like watching when your older brother who's five
years older than you is playing you and a bunch
of your friends at basketball. It's like, dude, you're six four,
I'm five to one, and he's just standing over you,
holding the ball and palming it and he shoots, but
(07:10):
he gets the rebound. Wait, that's kind of what it's like.
Let's call it what it is, right. This is part
of if you go back in your NBA history, something
we were talking about yesterday, what people know what they don't.
We had a pretty good laugh with the NBA on NBC.
Stuff's check it out on the podcast. But all that,
like what wil Chamberlain and those guys did, It's like
You'll had a couple of guys that rivaled them in
(07:31):
a height, tenacity and you know, defense him, prowess, whatever.
So I was like, it gets dismissed, Like, no, they
still dominate. It's not their fault. They were a bit tall. Now, No,
and that's part of the package with Wemby, right, it's
what you get, and he developed that set of skills
on a whole other. Like the ball handling is the
thing that just bewilders me because I remember watching kids
as they were growing up. They wasn't a it wasn't
(07:52):
a very clean thing after a growth spurt. Yeah, yeah,
that guy's learning how to I don't deal with a
bigger body, and you can't run guys Adam to double
team him, because he's just gonna You're gonna run guards
Adam who are eighteen inches shorter than he is, you know,
and it's like, what are you gonna do? He's just
gonna hold the ball up and find somebody out there,
Like what are you gonna do? Right, He's unstoppable, man,
(08:14):
I mean really, I think he should be outlawed the
So so we'll have more on the end of this game. Again,
it's still a huge lead for the Spurs over the
Mavericks with three and a half left to go. But
how about this from today regarding the Luka Doncic trade.
You know, I thought we were done with drama over
the Luca trade. No, no, no. A new book is
out chronicling the Luka Doncic Anthony Davis trade that shook
(08:37):
up the NBA last year. And as part of this
book that's written by Yaron Weitzman, who is a sports writer,
Brownie James was the one who broke the news of
the trade in a team chat, a team group text
when it came out. Remember when it came out, nobody
knew what was real? Like, everybody thought, is Shaan's is
(08:58):
this real?
Speaker 3 (08:58):
Is this they really?
Speaker 1 (09:02):
So? According to this book, Uh, They're all on the
group chat and a d put out of text saying
wait a minute, that these blanks just trade me? Right?
That did I just get traded? And Bronnie quote tweets
or puts the shams Charani a tweet into the group
chat that everybody gets to see. Shortly after that ad left,
(09:25):
lebron tweeted out w TF and the trade happened? And
Anthony Davis is no longer in that team group chat
because he was no longer Laker.
Speaker 3 (09:33):
He left.
Speaker 1 (09:34):
Now this is a crazy story, but like you look
at this and and the big the big part to me,
I see as I go. Really, Lebron had no idea.
He waited for Bronnie to put out the tweet saying hey, yes,
it's real, and then Lebron does the wait, what this
actually happened? You saw it as the fall guy Mann
didn't know.
Speaker 3 (09:54):
Jason watching the gufather.
Speaker 1 (09:57):
Go back to last year when this trade happened. It
happened after a big, inspired effort by Lebron and the
Lakers in New York against the Knicks, and Lebron was
all smiles. He had a different kind of jump to
his step in that game. Go back and watch the game,
go back, we said it when it happened. I'm like,
he knew in this game. He knew when this game
(10:17):
was going on they were trading Anthony Davis. He knew
because he's just different. He's giggly and laughy, and it's
this is not how he normally is during games. But
he knew this trade was happening. There's no way he
didn't go back and watch video of that game. You know, Okay,
there's something different about Lebron, So yeah, do I believe
for a second he comes in with a WTF and
he was just wait, what this is? This is happening
(10:38):
like that? Is this this going on? And Bronny's the
guy that puts in the trade, shams Tarania. There's nothing
that of Lebron texting Ad because we're both clutch guys
and not. Come on, man, I don't I don't believe
Sean Payton when he says I didn't mean anything towards
Russell Wilson. Don't believe Aaron Rodgers when he says the
game against the Packers on Sunday is not a revenge game.
I'm not believing Lebron had no idea about this trade. Again,
(11:00):
is a lot of stuff going on. It's such a
big deal. But man, really, you're letting Bronni's a guy
that's telling you you got traded a d Really that
that's how it went. Bronnie's the guy that let you know.
Rich Paul didn't tell you. Nobody else knew all of
this stuff. Bronnie was the guy that let you know
by this and Lebron didn't know. Come on, man, Conversely, though,
is this proof that he actually saw the Godfather?
Speaker 5 (11:21):
No, but this is proof that Bronnie James runs the Lakers.
I know it was you, Freido, not you broke my heart.
Speaker 1 (11:27):
It's Brownie. Okay, So then wait a minute, So then
who's Moe Green? Who's who's Tessio? Yeah, who's got cast out?
Maybe Dalton connect his Testio because he kind of just
got pushed to the side after the I mean, he
gets to come back. He's around in a larger group shot,
(11:48):
but he doesn't really get to They just took Testio out,
like we we We can't kill av Goda on camera.
This would be really come on, man, this is I mean,
Joe Polmachek's dad will do it. He's getting massage. He
was top kid.
Speaker 3 (12:02):
I'm Mo greenna not anymore. That's all.
Speaker 1 (12:04):
That's the indisputable leader of the game.
Speaker 3 (12:07):
Ye all right, So.
Speaker 1 (12:10):
Maybe okay, all right, so I'm trying to Okay, we
gotta get some other people, all right, we gotta figure
this out. We'll do a full on casting. But in
the end, I've never believed it, and everybody like, oh no,
there's no way he knew my ass. Yeah, of course,
of course, Look, you tell me the shift this year
is now that it's cold and it's distant and whatever.
And there he is in the suit and he doesn't
(12:30):
clap and there's no emotional response, like he's playing poker
and he's Lebron. This is the first place Lebron is
going to react to. It is not calling a d god. Yeah,
you know who he is. This is This is who
Lebron is. Lebron is the wrestler who when the when
the referees back is turned, pulls out a foreign object,
hits the guy in the head where it knocks him
(12:51):
out right, and then throws the foreign object away. The
referee turns around and the crowd is screaming that hey,
he hit him with a with a hammer, and the
guys woll not me, I didn't do it, and the
referees like I didn't see it.
Speaker 3 (13:02):
And then he pins him, wins the belt and everybody's.
Speaker 1 (13:05):
So many No, he hit him with a foreidat guy's like, no,
I know what you're talking about.
Speaker 3 (13:08):
Now, that's Lebron. Lebron. No, I didn't do what you're
talking about. I didn't do anything in this. I didn't
do anything.
Speaker 1 (13:12):
Here, come on me, come on right exit out about

Speaker 1 (15:18):
The Jason Smith Show is My best friend Mike Harmon
live from the Fox Sports or Radio studios. Opening Night
two in the NBA kind of the real Opening Night,
because you know the Knicks played h well, still have
some action going on right now. Phoenix lead Sacramento one oweight,
one oh four with three minutes ago in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 3 (15:40):
I didn't know if Phoenix would have enough for the
game time.
Speaker 1 (15:42):
I thought they're gonna play with like three uh, because
I had all the changes of the team in the offseason.
Speaker 3 (15:47):
Didn't know if they'd have enough.
Speaker 1 (15:47):
A lot of changes. But we did get to see
Russell Westbrooks. So it is another NBA keep on going,
but we'll have more on the big Wemby. I can't
say Cooper Flagg versus Flags. It really was you can
you can double double?
Speaker 3 (16:04):
Yeah, okay, that's great.
Speaker 5 (16:05):
The Maths really did him a disservice tonight, Yeah, playing
him point guard in his NBA debut, you know, taking
away like everything he's used to.
Speaker 1 (16:13):
That's the thing though, and smart well, the thing is
that I know that they've wanted him to do that
and not having herving is But you saw the first half,
which was brutal, right, didn't have any assist it. Yeah,
he was rendered, uh in effect together. But I think
you asked them, you asked them a little bit too
much of the first half Opening night here as an
(16:35):
eighteen year old. I think a little bit like you
start him obviously and let him get you some ball
handling skills. But wow, and he operated as the main
point guard tonight. I'm like, oh, I don't know, man,
this is a really this is a really good, young,
defensive minded Spurs team.
Speaker 3 (16:49):
And he struggled. Now, second half things opened up a
little bit.
Speaker 1 (16:53):
Albeit he did start scoring in a ball but he
did have a couple of big circus hoops. He had
the one big doctor j under the uh under the
basket reverse layup that was pretty nice. And look, Cooper,
flag's gonna be fine. I just thought first half, boy,
they really gave him a little bit too much. What
I really enjoyed, though, is the amount he and Victor
Webban you have handled the ball between them, they had
one assist. Yeah, yeah, Well Wemby's okay because it was yeah, no,
(17:17):
it's okay to have one assist when you score forty. Yeah.
I get that. I get that. I'm still just saying,
from an operational standpoint, top of the key, he can
get things started, how does he finish with zero as
this well, because Wemby looks around the court, holds a ball,
up and says, oh no, I'm the best option, and
then I understands a flag for as much as they
(17:37):
put on him, the fact that he ends up with
a goose egg there. Yeah, I mean, yeah, that's tough.
You know, again, things open up a little bit. I
think they took a little bit away off his responsibilities.
I don't play off ball a little bit more in
the second half, but I mean, being the primary point guard.
I'm like, that's a tough way to jump in, Like
we're really throwing you right into the fire. Maybe it
(17:58):
could have been done a little bit easier and you
ease him in, but all right, you know, hey, you lost,
and clearly you're gonna struggle for a little while until
you know he gets comfortable and you figure things out.
In the Spurs telling you Spurs, they that's why I
had him as my long shot NBA Finals team going
into this year. Wemby's gonna become the best player in
the league probably sometime the next month or so. You
(18:19):
look at what he did tonight. People are gonna see
the highlights tomorrow and go, wow, Adam Silva, You're right,
this is a highlight league, man. This is unbelievable. What
we saw tonight out of Wemby, some of the stuff
he made, It's like he wasn't doing this the last
eighteen months. He wasn't even not doing this at all.
This is incredible the level he is playing at already.
I mean, I can't believe he's not gonna score forty
a game. Like, look you look at him play. It's
(18:40):
like James Harden at his peak. When Harden, you knew, Okay,
he's gonna shoot the ball twenty times, right, he's gonna
make at least eight of those.
Speaker 3 (18:49):
He's gonna make.
Speaker 1 (18:49):
A certain amount of threes, he's gonna get to the
free throw line a certain number of times. Like that's
thirty five points a night. Right, that was James Hard
Like it looks easy for him because you know this
is what's gonna happen. He's gonna score thirty five at night,
and it seemed easy for him to do that. Like
that's kind of looked like with Wemby, Like he can
score forty pretty easy.
Speaker 3 (19:07):
Like he can.
Speaker 1 (19:07):
He is he gonna score ten points per quarter? Yeah,
I would take Wenby for ten points per quarter. I
don't think that's gonna go away anytime soon. I think
that'll that's okay. Well, this becomes the how many how
many guys do I have on my front line? Three
and four? How many falls do we wanna want to
commit and just beat the hell out of them like that?
(19:28):
I mean, that's gotta be become your thing, right, We're
just gonna body him up as often as we can.
Maybe it gets him away from the lower block. Not
that he can't just turn over you and hit the
jump shot. But yeah, it'd be interesting to watch how
teams try to defend him going forward. It's gotta be
the old karate kid out of commission. But since I
could beat this guy out of commission. As for as
(19:51):
for Dallas, do they have to go find a point guard?
Speaker 3 (19:54):
Oh? They might, they might. They might. Now they can
have Lebron.
Speaker 2 (19:59):
They had one.
Speaker 1 (20:00):
It's the same conundrum that.
Speaker 3 (20:01):
Jaredy Jones gotta go make. Everybody else is making bad trade.
Don't look at me, look at Nico. Didn't work out.
I'll look it back at Jalen Brunson.
Speaker 1 (20:10):
Hey, you know.
Speaker 3 (20:11):
Lebron for Cooper flag Frostburg. You're okay with that trade?
Speaker 5 (20:13):
Tonight?
Speaker 3 (20:14):
Lebron for Cooper Flagg. After the Night.
Speaker 1 (20:17):
One guy's in his suit. The other guy at least
had a double double.
Speaker 3 (20:20):
Look.
Speaker 5 (20:20):
But at this point, Jason, I don't think we need
anything in return for Lebron. They can just have him.
Speaker 1 (20:24):
Yeah, and you guys can just use the money that
you're paying him to get somebody else.
Speaker 3 (20:28):
I like that. I like that. It's okay.
Speaker 1 (20:30):
Like I said, he wants him buy out, he gets
to keep a dollar. Now, let's not lose focus and
lose sight of the biggest game of the night, and
that was the Knicks in an Eastern Conference Finals preview
beating the Cavaliers tonight thanks to it. Look, it was
a great game all around. Right, I look at this
and there's positive negative R because I'm gonna give you
(20:51):
an because I'm you know, a New York fans. Of course,
this is as good a game as the Knicks could
play you expect opening night. They're shorthanded, right, no Mitchell Robinson,
no Josh Hart, so two big rotation guys are out.
But yet Brunson played extremely well and u Nobi had
an incredible game. The three and D game that he has.
Karl Anthony Towns carried them late. And this is a
(21:12):
guy who was questionable then doubtful, then questionable, not sure
he knows his role with the Knicks, but here he
is tonight nineteen and eleven. Right, you had a couple
of young guys playing minutes. First half, Mike Brown played
eleven guys. This was as great a start as you
could possibly get for the Knicks. And I didn't know
how much I needed this win because sports wise, this
is all I have. Man like I've been with like.
(21:34):
I didn't realize until the game is at halftime. The
Knicks were thumping them sixty five fifty. They were playing
extremely well. Everything was great, and I'm going, man, did
I need this? Tells just how bad? It's almost like
when you know when you wear sneakers for a long time.
He realized, I'm gonna go get a new pair of sneakers,
and you go to the store, you put on a
new pair, you go, wow, I feel like I'm walking
on a cloud. I didn't realize how low and how
(21:55):
bad shape these other sneakers were in. Maybe they're not
worn out, but they've just worn all the way down.
But I didn't know my feet were so tired. I
put these new sneakers on. Man, I'm on a cloud. Like,
that's what I felt. What I'm like, I didn't know
how bad I needed this Knicks game, after the Mets
and the Jets and Syracuse football. I needed this so
bad tonight. It was so bleep and exciting. I was
so happy walked watching and listen to listen this game
(22:17):
on the way in watching it with you, and I
got in calling for all the fouls that I didn't get,
but I didn't care. I can't tell you how much
I needed this. Y. That's funny because we talk about
the experience there. I mean, you talk about the shoes.
I think part of it is psychologically something flips in
your brain that you've now spent money on shoes, so
they're gonna be the best damn shoes you've ever had.
Speaker 3 (22:37):
At kJ Just like Fox in its early days, these
were the best damn shoes period. V Okay.
Speaker 1 (22:44):
Now, as for the your euphoria, look o, g it
had an opportunity to run about fifteen seconds off the
clock and really kill kill it in the final minute,
and he didn't waiting, which could have come back to
bite you.
Speaker 3 (22:57):
But he took a three.
Speaker 1 (23:00):
No, no, I'm talking about the dunk. Oh remember when
he went straight in when he could have just dribbled
it back out and take the time off the clock.
I was okay with that. Yeah, I was okay with that.
Get the points, don't mess around, get the points. Get there,
take it twenty seconds off whatever, get the But all
of that to say, I was watching the game, and
by the end of it, I had my head in
my hand, going, it's at least one of eighty two,
(23:22):
you know, because you were losing your mind on every
possession and you're screaming like a little bit. Monsey was
scared in the in the news, do you know because
that was coming through a closed, very thick door.
Speaker 3 (23:33):
Yes, you can still hear.
Speaker 1 (23:35):
You could still hear that, So I mean a bit problematic,
which means you're decimal level, a bit louder than whatever
those thresholds are. But all of that to say, it's
it's exciting. It's it's what I always say. It's it's
like I'd love to be able to ride that lightning,
and I do it internally. I don't scream it a lot.
Once in a while you'll get the excited utter int
where one of my teams is playing like the bulls thing.
(23:56):
I get into it to a bit, but it's not.
I'm not living in dying with every possession as there
are eighty two of them. But for you knowing that
this this is it, man, the everything has committed and
Jelly sports the Jets, Woody Johnson slap fighting and saying, hey,
(24:16):
everything else. I mean, this guy can't play. You gave
him forty million dollars. Doesn't Man, it's your fault.
Speaker 3 (24:22):
Now.
Speaker 1 (24:23):
Here's the downside, okay, because I'm being realistic with dark
side is if you watch this game right, it's on
ESPN as good as everything else was. Right the end
of the game, I'm seeing all the stars court side, right,
Ben Stiller, Tracy Morgan, Christine Taylor, Jimmy Fallon, everybody is
(24:44):
at the game, and I'm watching this game come down
to where the Knicks were winning. Then at the end
it becomes Jalen Brunson ISO and Jalen Brunson is always
good for one turnover the final two minutes of every
game because they ask him to do it all the time.
He's always good for a turnover. He turns it over.
The Cavaliers make it close, the Knicks make a couple
of shots, and they win the game by by eight,
and I walked out. I was exhausted, and I'm saying
(25:06):
to myself, I felt like the Knicks just survived a
playoff game, maybe like an Eastern Conference Final game. Well
it was a lot because it was the Cavaliers, and yes,
it look it's probably an Eastern Conference Final preview, but
it felt like a playoff game in that last two
minutes it end. It did, and I'm watching, I'm going
I'm exhausted, and I've already jumped in. I feel like
Brunson is exhausted. I feel like the Nick like this
(25:29):
is one of eighty two, Like the Knicks are playing
this game like they're expecting tomorrow. We flipped the page
back to the Eastern Conference Finals, and that's a tough
thing for a team knowing that's how far we got
last year. We have a lot of work to do
to get back to that point. That sometimes can be
a really difficult thing mentally. And already we've I feel
like we've jumped in with the Knicks are killing Brunson minutes,
(25:50):
all all the stuff he's got down the stretch. We've
jumped right into Karl Anthony Towns drama. Who again, who
goes from questionable to doubtful to questionable to playing in
one day. Nobody does that, Like, what's going on with
I know that Cat? I know that Cat said, Hey,
I don't know about my role here, and I'm just saying,
am I counting the days now? However long it's gonna
(26:12):
be until it's not working with Cat and they try
to make a Yannis trade, like, is it gonna work
with Cat Launcher? We had a big game tonight, right,
he played really well, and maybe him being a little
bit off off the path of reliant on him because
last year it was more brunts and one Cat one A.
Maybe now more it's brunts and one and maybe Cat
and anunobi or kind of one. A is a piece,
(26:32):
and you know, there's a lot of different things you
can do, and maybe that's better. But I feel like
we've just jumped right into we have drama built in
with Kat, and I feel like we just played a
finals game and that's that can be an exhausting regular season.
It's opening night, and I feel like we needed that
way Now, maybe I needed it more, but I feel like, wow,
that's kind of where I'm at following that next win, Well,
(26:53):
it just seems like in the time that passes between
signing a contract as the co here meeting your roster,
nothing changed, nobody got traded, and that you're coming back
with this core that you would have had a bunch
of meetings upon arrival. All right, here's what we're envisioning
for you. Here's my board. You know what I am.
(27:15):
Mike Brown's not an unknown commodity, right, the guy who's
been around the coaching circles. All these players know him,
or they're one degree of separation to making a phone
call to a guy that has played under him before.
So the fact that there becomes this nebulus Yeah, I
don't know, not that you're playing a lot of heavy
minutes in the preseason, but you still it's like the
(27:39):
to a thing saying the quiet part out loud. Sean
Payton decided he needed to be petty in front of
a microphone wood He Johnson saying what he did, It's
a week of dopes one after the next and cat
whatever issues he's got unless he's begging to be taken
out of there, because he may very well be right.
What was his reputation in Minnesota that he didn't want
(27:59):
the heat, right, he wanted to be the guy until
people got mad at him because he wasn't the guy enough.
And now he goes to New York where it's clearly
on the shoulders of Jalen Brunson. But there he is
as one a but he gets trumped by the gritty
performances of all these other guys. They get the glowing
reviews of how great they are. He gets the heat
(28:20):
when he doesn't come up with a monster performance. And
maybe he's tired of that, And maybe that's more of
an issue of I don't know what I am because
you know, hey, I just want to be the guy.
I want to be the guy, but I don't want
to be the guy, right? How can I be the
man when you're the man and all that kind of stuff?
But hey, Ricky, Bobby, how can you lan? But it's
that thing where maybe he's he's looking at it from
(28:41):
the I don't really want the smoke that comes with
being a member of the Knicks because the expectations are
huge and it's not on Brunson. People have seen him
clutch like he was sign of an autographs. I showed you
the guy's doing an art project.
Speaker 2 (28:55):
What is it?
Speaker 1 (28:55):
Captain clutch. Right, he won that first award because they
needed to have more awards, the clutch Performer of the year, right,
So Captain Clutch there I goes. So he's established, he's
he's got the medal from the Knicks fans. Cat doesn't
have that. And now we go into a season where
you already created anks where they didn't need to be
(29:17):
any I'm already exhausted. It was already the late and
lighton lurking under the surface, and he decided to dredge it.
Speaker 3 (29:23):
I am, I'm already. Oh boy, I got another eighty
one eighty one. Mandy passes off before the season really starts.
Speaker 1 (29:29):
So why they shouldn't have played the Cavaliers night one, man,
they didn't need that. Trying to find out what's trending
in the wide world of sports. Someone who's been called
the Jalen Brunson of Fox Sports Radio. I see how
tired she gets sometimes at the end of the night.
It's Monzi Beloga.
Speaker 3 (29:45):
I'm tired all the time, but in a good way,
in a good way.
Speaker 2 (29:49):
I love Jalen Brunson.
Speaker 7 (29:50):
We'll get to that game in a second.
Speaker 2 (29:52):
The final two.
Speaker 7 (29:53):
Games on this second night of Opening Night.
Speaker 2 (29:56):
For the NBA.
Speaker 7 (29:57):
Really went down to the wire. Kings and Son back
and forth. Suns pulled away in the fourth quarter. Looks
like they're about to beat Sacramento one eighteen to one thirteen.
It's down to the final ten seconds. I guess anything
can happen, but it's down to the final ten seconds.
The Trailblazers outscored the Timberwolves in every quarter except the
fourth quarter, and Minnesota right now is up one eighteen
(30:19):
to one fourteen with seven seconds to go. Anthony Edwards
forty one points into night's game. He's not the only
one that had forty points. Victor Ie Binyama had a
forty piece today to go along with fifteen rebounds. Spurs
beat the Mavericks in Dallas, won twenty five to ninety two.
Cooper Flagg in his debut. He went scoreless in the
first half, but he did end with ten points and
(30:39):
ten rebounds. Anthony Davis twenty two points and thirteen rebounds
the next outscored the Cavaliers won nineteen to one. Eleven.
Five players ended in double digits for the Knicks. The
Magic held on one twenty five to one twenty one
against the Heat when Orlando was actually down eight points
in the fourth quarter. The seventy six ers survived one
seventeen to one sixteen against the cel six in Boston
(31:01):
rookie vj Edgecomb and his debut thirty seven points and
seven rebounds. The Bulls started their season with the win
at home over the Pistons, one fifteen to one eleven.
The Jazz scored forty three points in the first quarter
and never looked back as they rolled past the Clippers
went twenty nine to one.
Speaker 2 (31:17):
Oh.
Speaker 7 (31:18):
You know, the Clippers are the oldest team in the NBA.
Speaker 2 (31:21):
The Jazz are like the third youngest team.
Speaker 1 (31:24):
And you know what, both teams look that way tonight
the first quarter. Yeah, but shouldn't shouldn't this be where
the Clippers are just full of all sorts of energy,
just bursting at the seams. Hey, hey, can't.
Speaker 7 (31:36):
I was texting my brothers and he's like, oh, I
missed the Clippers game.
Speaker 2 (31:39):
I was like, don't watch it.
Speaker 3 (31:41):
You miss anything.
Speaker 2 (31:42):
You watch the Spurs and Mavericks.
Speaker 3 (31:43):
If you're gonna watch a game, watch the replay the Yeah, Like, you.
Speaker 7 (31:47):
Do not need to watch the Clippers, trust me. Bucks
defeated the Wizards went thirty three to one twenty, Hornets
top the Nets went thirty six to one seventeen, Raptors
over the Hawks win thirty eight to one eighteen, and
the Grizzlies defeated the Pelicans went eight to one twenty two.
Speaker 2 (32:01):
Memphis had seven players who.
Speaker 7 (32:03):
Ended in double digits, including all five starters, but Jahn
Morant led the way. He had thirty five points and yes, officially,
Timberwolves win and the Suns win only three games in
the NHL.
Speaker 2 (32:13):
The Devils of one six in a row.
Speaker 7 (32:15):
They beat the wild four to one, Sabers over the
Red Wings four to two, and the Canadians edged the
Flames two to one in overtime. Thursday night football Chargers Vikings.
Right now, Chargers left tackle Joe All is listed as
questionable because of his high ankle sprain, but earlier in
the week All said that he was ready to play.
Buccaneers have rolled out running back Bucky Irving and wide
receiver Chris Godwin for Week eight against the Saints, and
(32:37):
also Bucks wide receiver Mike Evans officially had surgery on
that shoulder. He's gonna miss eight weeks of action. Commanders
say that they're not going to have Jaden Daniels for
their Week eight Monday Night matchup against the Chiefs because
of a hamstring strain, and Panther's quarterback Bryce Stan didn't
practice today because of a high ankle sprain, while Jet
said coach Aaron Glenn didn't want to name a starting
(32:58):
quarterback today.
Speaker 3 (32:59):
Oh yes, we.
Speaker 1 (33:00):
Can have real, real sort of fantas. Gott to prepare
for two guys at stink? Is it just one guy
who stinks?
Speaker 7 (33:08):
Which stink? Preparation do we have to have? That's what
he's trying to not tell the world.
Speaker 1 (33:13):
They went to the mini goalf? Do you even prepare
if Justin Fields is playing? Hey, secondary, Hey, you take
the rest of the week off. You guys are good.
He's not going to complete a pass. They've got ten
in a box. Yeah, that doesn't matter very much. Well
consider not just because the Knicks won tonight, but you
know it's a night to do it, the big opening
night of the NBA. So much action. We're going to
(33:36):
celebrate the best way we know how. And now that's
coming up next right here, the greatest radio game ever.
Speaker 2 (33:45):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific.
Speaker 1 (33:53):
Fox Sports Radio. It is the Jason Smith Show with
my bes friend Mike Harmon. Bronons Opening Night two in
the NBA Big wins by the Knicks, the Spurs.
Speaker 3 (34:07):
The Bulls.
Speaker 1 (34:08):
The balls are one and oh that is right, the
Bulls are one and oh like history dance for Chuck Swirsky.
There you go in Chicago getting after.
Speaker 3 (34:16):
Beat the Pistons leg It's nineteen ninety five all over
it point.
Speaker 1 (34:19):
It was a little bit of the controversy towards the
end too. They had to overturn a call on Kate
Cunningham and they actually got the foul call. Yeah, they
were at home. You're on the free throw light. You're
off the free throw light. You're on the free throw line,
you're off the free throw lot. It eat two free
throws for you. So there is no better way to
celebrate Opening Night two of the NBA then for the
(34:43):
first regular season edition of.
Speaker 2 (34:48):
And Now It's the Magic Johnson Twitter.
Speaker 3 (34:51):
Game burn a radio game known to mankind.
Speaker 1 (34:57):
No more obvious and vanilla tweeter in the world than
Magic Johnson. I give you a tweet. Your job is simple,
but is it really simple? You have to tell me
if this is a tweet by Magic Johnson or made
up entirely by me playing as myself. Mike Harmon, Monte Bolanos,
Justin Frossberg, Alex Tyshert.
Speaker 3 (35:15):
Are you ready?
Speaker 2 (35:17):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (35:18):
It is Jorn all right, the existential? What is Magic Johnson?
Speaker 3 (35:24):
And he's so serious about it?
Speaker 1 (35:25):
I went to the Lakers game and watch my Lakers
get beat by the Warriors one nineteen to one oh nine.
Is that a Magic Johnson tweet?
Speaker 2 (35:36):
Hell?
Speaker 1 (35:36):
Yes it is? With six and a half million potential likes?
Is that a Magic Johnson tweet? That is a man
leaning into the bit? Thank you, Irvin. I went to
the Lakers game and watch my Lakers get beat by
the Warriors one nineteen to one oh nine. All right,
so you're saying yes, yeah, Well I'm listening to us
(35:56):
right now, either on a yacht or on five seventy
lhellu to the.
Speaker 7 (35:59):
Yes, it's not I'm never playing this game again.
Speaker 3 (36:01):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (36:02):
Did he send that out last night or today?
Speaker 3 (36:06):
I'm gonna say it was sent out today.
Speaker 5 (36:10):
So he was that heartbroken over the loss, yes, that
he couldn't tweet last night.
Speaker 1 (36:14):
Yeah, apparently so takes you out opening night? Great hope.
So then that's a real tweet.
Speaker 3 (36:19):
Okay, Alex Tischer, you think you're clever, Jay? Okay.
Speaker 4 (36:23):
I watched him shake his head and said, I'm not
going to be there. There's no way he was there.
That's not a tweet. It's not even his team. It's
Jay Moore's.
Speaker 3 (36:30):
Okay, that is a magic. Johnson tweets. He's a liar.
He's a liar.
Speaker 1 (36:49):
Wemby proved he is a true superstar with a forty
point game on opening night for the Spurs. Oh that's
too immediate?
Speaker 3 (36:56):
Is that that a magic? We're playing the game now.
Speaker 1 (36:59):
But do we normally get that instant?
Speaker 5 (37:00):
Feet?
Speaker 1 (37:01):
Am I thinking about it? To that said, the game
gets more difficult the more you think about it. I'm
gonna say it's not. Is that a magic Johnson tweet?
All right, it's not, Monsie.
Speaker 3 (37:11):
Can you read it one more time?
Speaker 1 (37:12):
Please? Forty points for Wemby tonight in a big opening
night victory for the Spurs.
Speaker 2 (37:19):
Yes, he likes to tweet.
Speaker 3 (37:20):
The obvious that is that is that is a magic?
Speaker 5 (37:24):
Is magic? Johnson's right, Frostburg, I'm gonna say no, because
he didn't give the score.
Speaker 3 (37:30):
Okay, okay, all right, all right.
Speaker 4 (37:34):
I'm still upset he's a liar. Okay, it's definitely not
his team.
Speaker 1 (37:38):
TRULYE just taking it, taking him to a bad space
right now.
Speaker 3 (37:41):
It's not cool.
Speaker 7 (37:42):
No.
Speaker 1 (37:44):
Then we got a reference to former Fox Sports radio
colleague j Moore.
Speaker 4 (37:48):
In there, ty shirt, What are you gonna say? Oh gosh,
shoot it? Is there a period or exclamation point? Yes,
there's a there's a there's a period.
Speaker 2 (37:59):
And the next gonna.
Speaker 3 (38:02):
I'm gonna say, no, that is not magic Johnson tweet,
Magic's letting me down.
Speaker 1 (38:17):
The Knicks got twenty three points from Jalen Brunson, twenty
four points and fourteen rebounds from og An Unobi, and
nineteen points and eleven rebounds from Karl Anthony Towns in
their one nineteen one eleven win. Is that a magic
Johnson tweet? The Knicks got twenty three points from Jalen Brunson,
(38:38):
twenty four points and fourteen rebounds from og Anunobi, and
nineteen points and eleven rebounds from Karl Anthony Towns in
their one nineteen one eleven win. Did he give you
the number fi his beeper service? So you get the
up to date scores sports phone.
Speaker 3 (38:54):
I know, oh nine seventy six one three one three.
Speaker 2 (38:58):
We are too old.
Speaker 1 (39:00):
A magic Johnson. Yeah, yeah, I'll go on board with that.
It's got the stats, got.
Speaker 7 (39:04):
The absolutely not he doesn't even know what stats he's
talking about.
Speaker 1 (39:10):
Wow, he's as driven guy.
Speaker 3 (39:13):
Okay, that's not it. Okay, who's he talking about the Knicks?
Speaker 1 (39:18):
And what happens if you have to interact with him
the next time he comes to Dodger Stadium.
Speaker 7 (39:23):
Yeah, I'm gonna be like I did, because you don't
know stats about the Knicks like that?
Speaker 2 (39:30):
Niche you okay?
Speaker 3 (39:32):
All right, Frostburg, what do you think I want to say?
Speaker 2 (39:34):
No?
Speaker 1 (39:35):
Because he never tweets about the G League?
Speaker 4 (39:38):
Wow?
Speaker 3 (39:39):
Okay, Okay, that was good.
Speaker 1 (39:42):
There's a microphone. Figure out how to drop it.
Speaker 3 (39:44):
Okay, that was good. Yeah, that's that's good. I can
tell you my Lakers knock knock, my Lakers, ready, knock knock?
Who's that? Owens?
Speaker 1 (39:52):
Who ohen one? I'm hungry?
Speaker 3 (39:58):
All right, ty Shirt? What do you got on this?
I don't know. You just did a joke. What are
we doing?
Speaker 1 (40:01):
I just did a Now you have to know is
that was a bad joke is that that was a
pretty good joke.
Speaker 3 (40:05):
Did you laugh?
Speaker 4 (40:06):
Not?
Speaker 3 (40:06):
The knock knock jokes work as long as the team
has No.
Speaker 1 (40:09):
I laughed. You know how many weeks my friends been
calling me with the with the knock knock joke for
the Jets, knock knock?
Speaker 3 (40:15):
Who's there? O?
Speaker 4 (40:15):
And O and who oh w and four and five
and six. I'm gonna do it, I'm sure, ten and twelve. Yeah,
it's good about you for picking up.
Speaker 3 (40:26):
I'll do it for you with the Clippers.
Speaker 1 (40:27):
Yeah, I was gonna say, as soon as i'd see
that area code, I'm out.
Speaker 3 (40:30):
Yeah. It's not a tweet, not a tweet really.
Speaker 5 (40:32):
Not a tweet.
Speaker 3 (40:33):
Yeah no, no, that yeah.
Speaker 1 (40:36):
Knicks tweet is in fact no, no magic Johnson tweet.
My only thing was aute quick turn around though.
Speaker 3 (40:48):
It had the points, it had the score, it had everything.
Speaker 1 (40:51):
No the thing though, but I mean they got it
right with it and the no. I I felt for
the ropid dope. But my whole thing is timing. He's
normally that not that immediate, all right, That service usually
fails there. It is exit about of Fresca, exit Swallen
Dome night one of the magic Johnson Welcome Home Magic.
Coming up next, we get into an electric NFL topic
(41:14):
that came up today. That's next, Jason and Mike Fox
Sports Radio,
