Not a big surprise but Jason is already making excuses for why the Jets are already showing their true colors! Shedeur Sanders may just be the quarterback the Browns have been looking for and so much more!

(01:13):
YouTube at Jason Smith Show. So here we are Mike
smack dab in the middle of the week in the NFL.
We have six games in the rear view mirror. We
got the rest of the games coming up this weekend.
We previewed Travis Hunter. We're in the swing now, like
the like we're in the we I feel like now, okay,
we're in the swing of NFL even after just a
couple of nights where we normally get to during the season,

(01:34):
where hey, Thursday night game starts, the week we start,
we talk about the game Thursday night, we talk about
it on Friday preview the weekend, Like, I feel like
it's here. I know that you get those tweets now
and again it's say, only four more four more Sundays
until the NFL's no, no, no, no for more sleep four
more sleeps till Christmas, Like four more Sunday sleeps until

(01:56):
the season starts.

Speaker 3 (01:57):
But no, we're here, man, We're here. We're here.

Speaker 1 (01:59):
We're we're here because teams have gone away from resting
all of their players and now you're getting some stars
playing in the preseason. So yeah, no, we're here, man.
I feel like, no, I don't have to wait anymore
for football. It's here.

Speaker 3 (02:12):
We're good man, we're good.

Speaker 4 (02:15):
Well, we're kind of here. I mean, we we it's better.
It's better than a sharp stick in the eye. And
for you, a lot of it is you've decided that
you've you stuck said stick in your eye watching the Mets,
so you'd rather turn your attention fully into into football, football,
and more football, which is good for America.

Speaker 3 (02:37):
Lose, there is something at this time then tomorrow all right.

Speaker 4 (02:43):
So when the text comes from Frostburg, tomorrow night football
is true. Well, I mean you'll get a notification that
the game ended.

Speaker 3 (02:52):
I'm sure.

Speaker 4 (02:54):
Oh, you've locked them. They disgusted you so much, but it's.

Speaker 3 (02:58):
Just they always bother you when they lose.

Speaker 2 (03:00):
That's a lot.

Speaker 4 (03:01):
Well, but usually get a chuckle out of that. So
don't you want those alerts?

Speaker 2 (03:05):
Nah, they don't even rate.

Speaker 4 (03:07):
Okay, well, I mean it's just assumed. You assume it
away and then whatever. Yeah, then sometimes you're disappointed when
they actually do stumble into a win. But I guess
the larger point being that the scourge that Sean McVay
did you know, bring upon the NFL of nobody playing
in the preseason went away when a lot of the

(03:27):
teams that followed, you know their style, realized, wait, we're
not them, because you know what, we're not good. So
we can't do it this way because guys need reps.
Guys need to play that were not the rams where
they've drafted well and established the depth chart and the
rank and file. That makes sense. No, So we saw

(03:48):
Cincinnati last night. It was great to see Joe Burrow
and Jamar Chase. You think they really wanted to play, No,
but they got tired of getting them sucking in September
and then having to explain it. You think you guys
should have played the present.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
Damn it.

Speaker 4 (04:01):
Even if we only go out there for four snaps,
we have to show up in the preseason and team
by team. The other is you don't have continuity anymore.

Speaker 3 (04:09):
Right.

Speaker 4 (04:09):
We talk about the coaching uh trees and how every
year we're looking at new faces or old guys coming
back out of nowhere high Pete Carroll uh and and
all these kind of things like there's no continuity. So
coaches have to get some some reps in too, with
guys that they're actually going to be coaching come September

(04:30):
because most of these guys cycle out so damn fast.
That you've got your Andy Reid's, you've got your your
Mike Tomlins, about four or five other guys. Everybody else
has been hired in the last two or three years.

Speaker 3 (04:42):
They're still learning on the job. Yeah, uh, you know.

Speaker 1 (04:46):
And it's funny you bring up the Jets and and
tomorrow look the games on NFL Network.

Speaker 3 (04:51):
It's a big primetime game. Great, Hey Jets, Packers, NFL Network. Rreat.
Justin Fields is gonna start.

Speaker 1 (04:59):
He's gonna play, And I gotta be honest, I'm nothing
If I'm not honest, I don't know if I'm looking forward.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
To seeing him play or not.

Speaker 1 (05:06):
Like I don't know, like like is he ready to
go out there with the offense and not embarrass himself
and go two for ten, you know, like like he
does at practice, Like is he really ready? I mean,
I gotta think at some point he's only gonna play
a handful of snaps and I'll have a couple of
safe designed runs for him. But I'm just I mean,
I'm just so worried, Like, Okay, he's gonna go out

(05:27):
there and the narrative is gonna be everybody is waiting
for him to throw up on himself. Because it's Justin
Fields and it's gonna happen and it's gonna be great,
and all the all the excitement I have about the season,
everybody is gonna be sucked out of it because he's
gonna be terrible and it's gonna be oh min Look
at the Jets there, they're already sucked there. Look at
Justin Fields. He can't even go out there and dominate

(05:48):
third string guys out there for the Packers. Like, I
don't know if I'm excited to see him play or
just want to wait until the regular season and it
was gonna close my eyes and open them and hope
for a miracle Week one.

Speaker 4 (05:59):
Yeah, I think so. Some of this comes down to,
you know, how how much is the the OC sweating?

Speaker 5 (06:06):
Right?

Speaker 4 (06:06):
Is Tanner Engstron losing his mind over this like he's
Robert Hayes an airplane?

Speaker 3 (06:11):
Right?

Speaker 4 (06:12):
Is he's sweating bullets because he's got to design something
that's gonna make Fields look good, and then he's got
to design another one and another one. Go to your
you know DJ Khalid response that you love so very much,
and see if you can't string together at least one
solid possession, even if it ends with a ninety seven

(06:33):
yard fueld goal.

Speaker 3 (06:34):
Try see you know. And here's the thing is you
just really you don't even know it.

Speaker 1 (06:37):
You don't even know it, and you just so depressed
me because what you just said right there, Tanner Ranstrom
has to design something that makes justin fields look good.

Speaker 3 (06:48):
And then he's got to decide it again no, but.

Speaker 4 (06:50):
He's gotta make him comfortable. And then they say, okay, right,
that play and then there's a shot of the booth
and you decide, all right, how stressed.

Speaker 3 (06:57):
Does he look?

Speaker 4 (06:58):
Because that next play is the net out of the game.

Speaker 3 (07:01):
Get him out of the game.

Speaker 1 (07:02):
Okay, he just scrambled for twenty five yards, get him
out of the game. He's good, he's good. Put to
Rod Taylor in but.

Speaker 4 (07:07):
I mean, I want the live miked uppa of your
your oc.

Speaker 3 (07:11):
Right.

Speaker 4 (07:11):
We always get that shot in the bo there he
is at the guy. You know what I just here,
it's gonna be like, all right, there's the new guy.
Let's watch him sweat. Put him in picture and picture
with every play call.

Speaker 1 (07:22):
You really depressed me with that, man, I mean that
was really just depressing. Not like hey, Tanner Rankstrom has
to figure out.

Speaker 3 (07:29):
Look.

Speaker 1 (07:30):
Aaron Glenn brought some Lions coaches with him, which is
awesome because look, I'm all in on Aaron Glenn, right,
I'm all in on him. I feel like this year
is gonna be a get by year and then a
year bringing his culture in almost kind of like Harball
last year with the Charges, except less wins for the Jets,
where Harbor brought his culture in, had his get by
guys still found a way to get in the playoffs.

(07:51):
And now year two, watch out because now he's got
his running backs, he's got his off he's got his team. Right,
the draft went well and Lad mccacky's a superstar. Yeah,
watch out. Like I kind of feel like, Okay, Aaron
Glenn's gonna build a culture. It's gonna be fun. Like
they're not gonna win a lot of games, but okay,
this time next year, all right now, because I'm really
in on Aaron Glenn. I love everything about the guy.

(08:11):
But like, you know, but now I feel like, yeah,
design something makes up. Okay, Hey Towner, you got another one?
Uh dude, I just had one. Come on, you want
another one with all right?

Speaker 3 (08:23):
Uh? Uh? You know, I get a time out.

Speaker 1 (08:25):
I gotta go, I gotta go deep into the into
the antles here for a big play, Like it says
when I see Justin Fields, every report is Hey, strong
morning practice for Justin Fields, horrendous afternoon practice for Justin Fields.

Speaker 3 (08:36):
I'm like, this is this is what one game in
a day? Yeah, but dude, but.

Speaker 1 (08:41):
This is not even But you're not even allowed to
hit the quarterback and he's still having bad days. If
you have bad days and you're not allowed to be hit,
how are you gonna turn that around? I mean, really,
just think about it. It's it's not rocket science if
you can't have a good day, and it's not.

Speaker 3 (08:55):
About figuring out a system.

Speaker 1 (08:56):
Fair when you are sailing the football over your wide
receivers heads and when when you are not recognizing your reads, like,
this is stuff that you do. This is what being
a quarterback. This is not Hey, in the system we
want to do this. Look at this is just stuff
that you should be a little bit better. You can't
have a four day stretcher going eight for thirty eight
throwing the football.

Speaker 3 (09:16):
You can't have that.

Speaker 4 (09:17):
Were those eight completions glorious?

Speaker 1 (09:21):
If it was eight for thirty six with eight touchdowns,
I would say, okay, right, I meant fourth pass it
every fourth passes a touchdown. Okay, great, but again most
times you're not allowed to hit the tackle the receivers either,
so still you don't have as much.

Speaker 4 (09:37):
Yeah, you really like the way I set that up.
All right, you get to succeed once.

Speaker 3 (09:40):
But I mean, that's what that's what life is all about. Right.
The next three depressed me.

Speaker 1 (09:44):
Man, you really depressed me by just saying that you
make them look good and then do it again, like
it's so daunting to do it once and now and
now we're gonna have to do it another time.

Speaker 4 (09:54):
You got to figure out where that level of aptitude
is and the offense you're trying to construct.

Speaker 3 (09:59):
I do like in this episode of the show.

Speaker 4 (10:02):
As we've done it, you know you'll all be able
to podcast any and all of it as we're finished tonight.
We appreciate you being part of the extended family. Send
it to friends, family, and so on and so on,
and every ten gets a in al water filter or something.
But when we look at it, you've said the same
thing about the Patriots. So now we're entering twice a

(10:23):
year culture wars.

Speaker 3 (10:26):
Who's got the better.

Speaker 1 (10:27):
Culture oh those games, Oh those Jets, Brable, Can we
just have them settle it in the cage then? No, no, no,
it's gonna be first team to double digits wins, first
team to get to ten points wins those games.

Speaker 3 (10:38):
Jets.

Speaker 4 (10:38):
You gotta think the over under has been set at
like thirty two and a half.

Speaker 3 (10:41):
No, dude, like nineteen and a half.

Speaker 4 (10:43):
Nine?

Speaker 3 (10:44):
Ten nine is going to be the final? Yeah, like
ten nine. You're looking at ten nine.

Speaker 1 (10:47):
B Hey, we got a field goal ten nine? How
long is the game going on? Seven hours? And somebody
got to ten?

Speaker 3 (10:54):
It's fantastic.

Speaker 4 (10:55):
Did they eventually go to penalty kicks?

Speaker 3 (10:57):
I got it.

Speaker 4 (11:00):
Because that sounds about where we're going with this. Let's
see we're gonna get what do we get Patriots Jets?
How early in the season do we get that?

Speaker 3 (11:10):
We don't get that right away?

Speaker 1 (11:11):
No, No, but doesn't matter. You think you think the
offense is gonna be great for these things?

Speaker 4 (11:14):
Come on, let's see, we got you host them December
twenty eighth. The other meeting is in mid November.

Speaker 3 (11:20):
Well that sucks. Yeah, Well, I don't know.

Speaker 1 (11:24):
Maybe you want it later when the possibility is maybe
a team can get to fourteen. So who's backing your
squad by that point, Oh, Brady Cook. That's the what,
that's the big you knows, who's looked the best in
Jets camp has been Brady Cook. Like that's the every
day it's wow, the strides he has made. He looks
like an NFL player. I'm like, if Justin Field stinks,

(11:44):
watch watch the Jets fans. They're gonna scream for Brady Cook.
They are gonna scream for him one hundred. He honestly,
he's the guy having the best preseason of anyone in
the Jets. Everything is great, his reads, his delivering of
the football, it unbelievable. He spent all this money and
Brady Cook is a guy that got the Missouri who's

(12:05):
like an afterthought, and he might wind up an undrafted
free agent, could be the next Rock Party rights, that's
what Jason retired.

Speaker 3 (12:16):
No, no, are you talking Jets?

Speaker 6 (12:19):
No?

Speaker 1 (12:19):
No, Well, I don't know at this point. Let's see
if you put Brady Quinn on the Jets with Brady
Cook and Justin Fields and to Taylor, Brady Quinn might
be in the middle there somewhere, might be ahead of
one of.

Speaker 3 (12:35):
Okay, all right, By Jets All.

Speaker 4 (12:39):
That's where we're at right trying to figure out exactly
how how this starts. And tomorrow night you're going to
lose it with every snap. I would love for you
to make sure you put that and film it and
we'll put it up on the YouTube video.

Speaker 1 (12:54):
And hey, speaking of Saturday, this really quick because this
has come in, Anthony Richards could come back to practice
for the Colts tomorrow.

Speaker 3 (13:04):
See probably with that big.

Speaker 1 (13:05):
Dislocated finger that's stuck all the way out last night.
He could come back tomorrow, which is great news for him.
Great and it looks like he'll still get to battle
it out for Daniel Jones. Missing a day or two
of reps not that big a deal this early in camp,
so it's not suddenly gonna hand the job of dang
I mean, Daniel Jones is gonna win it anyway. But
it doesn't. It doesn't, you know, sink his his his summer.

(13:27):
But it still doesn't change anything. With Shane Stike and deciding, hey,
I'm okay using multiple backup offensive lineman behind guys, it
could be our starting quarterback and the fact that he
said last night, I'm We're gonna probably do it again
next week.

Speaker 3 (13:39):
What are you stupid?

Speaker 1 (13:40):
You're gonna put what you're after seeing what happened, seeing
that you put three backup offensive linemen out there and
your quarterback almost got killed.

Speaker 3 (13:48):
Yeah, okay, we're gonna do it again. Now.

Speaker 1 (13:50):
Maybe that play was more on Anthony Richardson. Maybe it
was more on the offensive line not communicating like it
doesn't matter. You still decided it was okay to put
your potential franchises starting quarterback out there behind three backup
offensive lineman.

Speaker 3 (14:02):
And you may do it again next week.

Speaker 1 (14:04):
Like this is when I see him, like I see
Robert Sala or Brandon Staley where I know, being an
NFL head coaches too much for him.

Speaker 4 (14:15):
You know what I would, don't see it, don't see it.
This is the one where, you know, what's a real
popular swimming method for kids, throwing her asses in the pool.
And that's kind of what he did here in year
three for Anthony Richardson.

Speaker 3 (14:30):
So let me ask you this.

Speaker 1 (14:31):
If Ben Johnson said, Hey, Caleb Williams is going to
play and play a lot, and I got three offensive
we're gonna play with three backup offensive lineman, you're saying, yeah,
throw him out there. Wow, they're saying that, well, okay, okay, okay, okay.
Again we talk about people that it's too much being
an NFL head coach for okay, and your previous coaching
regime falls into that same category of Robert Sala and

(14:54):
Brandon Staley.

Speaker 3 (14:55):
Okay, we understand that.

Speaker 1 (14:57):
But I begion he's in that category of guys at
being NFL at coaches too much, doesn't see the forest
through the trees, is defensive, doesn't see the angle.

Speaker 3 (15:05):
Yeah, we wanna do it again? Why would you do it?
Why would you do it the first time? You know what?

Speaker 4 (15:09):
Though, that was a pretty good learning experience, though, if
I really have to recognize that based on our protections,
that guy probably coming in on me. So I have
to be full on yelling.

Speaker 1 (15:20):
Hot round gotta I gotta recognize that I really am
gonna get hit a lot. Yeah, that is right, all right,
So I gotta realize, all right, exit out about a
fresca exit swallowing dome. But still great news that Anthony
Richardson coming back to practice tomorrow. We'll get back into
Shador Sanders coming up next, as well as.

Speaker 3 (15:36):
After big news today. Who in college football?

Speaker 1 (15:40):

The answer is gonna surprise you. It's next right here,

Wherever you get your podcast, you'll find today's show and
the best of version posted right after we get off
the air. So we'll get back into Shadora Sanders in
a second. But pretty big headline today and if you
think that, hey, you know, all the pressure in the
world this year in college football is on arch Manning
in Texas and all is none no, no, no. The

(17:23):
most pressure in the country, without a doubt, is on
LSU head coach Brian Kelly. We get the news today
that Garrett nuss Meyer, who is a sure fire first
round NFL pick, maybe the top quarterback, taking overall if
arch Manning does decide to come back to college. We
find out today he aggravated the but teller tendonight as

(17:45):
he's been dealing with in his knee, but is not
gonna miss any significant time. Brian Kelly making this announcement
earlier today at his press conference, And hey, they're going
forward and it looks like for now at least US
is fine. It's not torn, there's no frame, there's none
of that. There's nothing really to see on film with it,

(18:06):
so just something to clip and save. Oh, everything's fine,
everything's fine. Nussmeyer getting hurt obviously would be the worst thing.
But even you know, even if Nussmeyer is healthy, right,
so say, say he's healthy and I hope he's okay, Right,
Obviously Neusmeyer's a great player. If this isn't a playoff
season for LSU, they will find what is going to

(18:29):
be about fifty million dollars to buy out Brian Kelly
from the rest of his contract. Like, there's a there's
guys under pressure. Sure, you want to talk about Kaylin
debor pressure. Yeah, so you know, yeah, yeah, there's guys
out there under pressure on hundred percent. But Brian Kelly,
this is year four and he's not had a year
with less than three losses so far. It has not

(18:51):
been a great marriage. It's been very awkward. You had
the the highly uh publicizement where he's yelling at his
players during a game last year. He's not really gotten
that hug from LSU fans. It's very Lincoln Riley USC esque,
except Lincoln Riley's buyout is like ninety million dollars. So, yeah,
you got Lincoln Riley for a while, but uh.

Speaker 3 (19:12):
Fifty million. We've seen it before.

Speaker 1 (19:14):
We said Jimbo Fisher got got bought out for like
what seventy five million by A and M.

Speaker 3 (19:19):
If it's another year.

Speaker 1 (19:20):
For LSU of no playoff and that means it's gonna
be a three or four loss year, that's gonna be
it for Brian Kelly. Especially with here's nuss Meyer, best
quarterback they've had since Burrow last Cup, okay, or you.

Speaker 3 (19:32):
Know Daniels Burrow.

Speaker 1 (19:34):
They're continuing that line of really good quarterbacks and underachieving.
He's gonna pay. They will find the fifty million because
every year it goes down about ten million. Rightley, if
you bought him out for last year, it was sixty million.
After this year is fifty million, then forty million. But
another year of three or more losses, I mean, what
are you paying Brian Kelly for? Like you're paying Brian

(19:54):
Kelly for one or two loss seasons, playoff, national championship.
You're paying with do he did at Notre Dame and
now despite the fact that he has more resources, more
ways to get players in as and his words when
he jumped, hey, I'm not hamstrung by the things that
Hamstrong at Notre Dame and oh, by the way, Notre
Dame got to a national championship game before Brian Kelly

(20:14):
did n LSU. All the stuff he said was reasons
why he's going to succeed at LSU. He's not done
it like this. This is a playoff or your fired
year for Brian Kelly.

Speaker 4 (20:25):
Yeah, you forgot that he had a couple of those
penciled in wins based on that independent status that Notre
Daming joys that don't come with him. But yeah, certainly
a lot of fights with administrative folks. Back at South
Bend for LSU, they are the ninth favorite in the
College Football National Championship Ods, sitting there at fifteen to

(20:47):
one ahead of Michigan and the decided drop off Michigan
is thirty five to one. LSU fifteen to one. In
terms of that back end of the top ten, eight
and a half is their over under for win total.
And then if nuss Meyer can't go, it's the Van
Buren boys. Michael van Buren Junior comes over. He was

(21:08):
the quarterback at Mississippi State, where he completed fifty four
percent of his passes.

Speaker 1 (21:19):
Really, I mean, I'd love to be sitting here and
tell you all things. But schools find money. Schools find
money to buy people out. They're not just gonna let
Brian Kelly come in and say, yeah, Okay, you're gonna
collect this ten plus million dollar year. They'll find the cash.
They'll find the cash.

Speaker 4 (21:33):
Four thousand yards twenty nine touchdowns last year for dus Meyer.
He is the second favorite for the Heisman.

Speaker 3 (21:39):
Man, I'll tell you what I mean if if like
this is it?

Speaker 1 (21:42):
Like, I don't even know how, Bryant, I don't know
how you enjoy coaching as much when you know that, hey,
this year, you gotta win or get fired.

Speaker 3 (21:49):
Like can you really enjoy the wins?

Speaker 1 (21:50):
Or wins a relief and you get to, Okay, we
won enough where I can take a breather for a week,
you know, like I could, I could go on vacation
for a week, going okay, we won ten games, we
made the playoff and we lost in the semi finals.
But okay, everything, I'm gonna have my job next year.
I'm okay going on a cruise for a week and
being excited about it. Now they gotta get nervous all
over again. Like I don't know how you I don't

(22:12):
know how coaches can live in that kind of environment
when this is a hey it's a win or you're
done kind of pressure like that.

Speaker 3 (22:18):
That's got to be impossible for Kelly.

Speaker 4 (22:20):
Well, especially realizing that decisions don't live in a vacuum.

Speaker 3 (22:26):
So you've got several years of this.

Speaker 4 (22:28):
Got plenty of incidences and issues going back to his
Notre Dame days. I mean, eventually it comes and comes
to do and that's where we're at, right the roster decisions,
the guys that you didn't put as much emphasis on
in the recruiting process, that maybe your collective and other
folks didn't come to the table with enough cash, and

(22:51):
then you can only point and say, hey, hey, hey,
look at what they did, because it's not unfair. Right,
everybody's playing by the same rules. Now, I still say
the shadow man's out there with the bags and not
all that money's accounted for. But you're at LSU. Don't
tell me that those guys haven't been part of the
program forever as well. So somewhere along the way you're

(23:12):
not navigating this properly. Not feeling so bad for Brian Kelly.

Speaker 1 (23:16):
Exit out about a Fresca exit Swalling Dome, Jason Smith,
Mike Harmon. Now, tonight we watched the NFL debut of
Shadora Sanders, and it was a success by anyone's estimation. Right,
and started out, Look, he started out. He made some
good plays, and he made some rookie plays.

Speaker 3 (23:35):
Right.

Speaker 1 (23:35):
He had a great scramble for a first down through
a couple of ice passes, had a couple of times
we decided, I'm gonna do the Russell Wilson, just drop
back and run and run and run.

Speaker 3 (23:43):
Now I gotta get rid of the football.

Speaker 1 (23:45):
Second quarter, he was terrific through two touchdowns. His second
touchdown was a thing of beauty, stepping to the right
to allow his running back to knock off the defensive
lineman who was breaking through, delivers the football for a touchdown.
It was a fantastic night for Shador Sanders. Now, but
despite what you read on the internet, here people say

(24:07):
there is something else other than Shador Sanders stinks and
they should get rid of him, or Shador Sanders should
be named the starting quarterback for the season. Now, there
there is actually something else that makes more sense. And
the fact that I'm here telling you about that, what
does that say? Yes, there are four guys who technically
five because Tyland Huntley as well. He played tonight, he played,

(24:30):
he missed a couple of uh played a little bit
in the late in the second half. After tonight, I always,
you know, I say the same thing. You never find
out about a quarterback until you see him play. And
with Kenny Pickett injured, Dylan Gabriel injured, Joe Flacco is
clearly a break glass in case of emergency quarterback or
someone who would start until they can turn it over

(24:52):
to one of the young guys, or maybe you're gonna
tank this year if none of your young quarterbacks are good,
and hope that Arch Manning wants to come out for
the draft next year. But there is nothing, there's no
reason why after tonight's game, Shador Sanders shouldn't be elevated
to being for now the number one quarterback in Browns camp.

(25:12):
He should be the number one guy and get reps
with the ones.

Speaker 3 (25:15):
Let him run with it. The guy earned it, he
earned it with what he did tonight.

Speaker 1 (25:19):
I'm sorry the other guy's got hurt, but you can
suddenly say, okay, Dylan Gabral, now yeah you're back. At
no you can't do that, Oh, Kenny Pickett, your head. No,
Shador Sanders is someone who came in with all kinds
of mystique and an itch to scratch.

Speaker 3 (25:31):
And is he really this talented? Is he not?

Speaker 1 (25:33):
So many teams pass on him because either they didn't
like dion or they were afraid is what his attitude is.
But what he did tonight, he was terrific. You can
tell he was prepared, you can tell he was strong.
He again standing in the pocket. And his best attribute
is how tough he is. That is a tough kid.
He will always stand in and deliver the football no

(25:54):
matter what kind of hit he's gonna get. That's a
presence of mind that that quarterback's been in league five
or ten years, don't have right justin Field still takes
off and runs way too early. Other guys run and
sideswipe justin Field. Yeah, you guy, he is shown. He
he showed tonight. Hey you know what, and we said
I said this the other night. If he shows he's
good enough, let him run with being the number one

(26:16):
for a while because he will have earned it, right
Because the biggest thing is is this a situation where
it's too big for him? Right now, Like do guys
need some time? Sometimes rookies need some time coming into
the NFL. It moves a little too fast for them.
They need to be able to sit and watch and
see how preparations go on a weekly basis before maybe
you're ready to play in the in mid season or
so right. I get that, but there was none of

(26:37):
that from Shador Sanders tonight. None of that. He was
clearly ready, ready for the moment. And if he's not
taking reps with the ones that is, that is so
negligent of Kevin Stefanski because.

Speaker 3 (26:51):
Number one, he earned it.

Speaker 1 (26:52):
Number two, if you don't do it, you're just not
doing it because you you you don't want to give
him a chance to succeed. Because Flacco doesn't need the reps. Obviously,
the guys is eighteenth year and the other two guys
are hurt. Tyler Hutley doesn't need to get reps over
Shador Sanders. He's been he's been on the team for
seven days. He was signed because he need somebody else
to play the back half of the of the second
half tonight, you didn't have anybody else. If not, it

(27:14):
was gonna be Brian Sipe and I love getting Brian
Sipe in the year.

Speaker 3 (27:18):
Like that.

Speaker 1 (27:19):
Should that should absolutely be a sit It doesn't need
to be announced, but when the Browns practice next week,
we should see the story.

Speaker 3 (27:26):
Sources.

Speaker 1 (27:27):
Uh, Shador Sanders getting reps with the got the most
reps of the ones today, got fourteen reps with the Ones.
Joe Flacco got the second most with six. Uh, whatever
it is, that should be the situation because he earned it.
And and if you don't do that, you're you're you're
you're really committing a disservice to your team by not saying, Hey,
here's a guy that maybe is talented enough to be

(27:47):
our starting quarterback, and we took him in the draft.

Speaker 3 (27:49):
We're hoping this is who he is. He showed us
how good he was out of the gate. Right, This
is a you talk about anybody.

Speaker 1 (27:54):
If if cam Ward debuted with this night, we'd be saying,
oh my goodness, what if the Titans got the next
great superstar? Are suddenly his ADP and fantasy drafts is
going way up? No, it should be the same for
Shador Sanders. He was terrific against a lot of ones
tonight and Caro Caroline a lot of ones on the
on the on the field for.

Speaker 3 (28:11):
The first half of that game. So yeah, he should
be running.

Speaker 1 (28:14):
He should be running with the starters now starting when
practice comes back next week.

Speaker 3 (28:18):
I think it comes.

Speaker 4 (28:19):
There's a couple of things for pragmatism, right, you know
we talk about selling hope, that's what the off seasons for.

Speaker 2 (28:24):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (28:24):
Now we're getting into the the nitty gritty uh as
as you say, right in terms of practice time. Yeah,
he shouldn't have been relegated at any point in particularly
the last couple of weeks. You know, you take from
practice accounts what you want, right, what what gets circulated,
what doesn't right? Caleb Williams, who we've been talking about
a bunch you know, the oh he missed the nets

(28:47):
and these well, it's like any drill, we don't know
what the intent was with side bets of how quickly
he can get the ball out, what's the accuracy, what's
the whatever? Could could he have hit the net nine
of their times and the other drills you know, done
that three other times and gone.

Speaker 3 (29:03):
Three for three.

Speaker 4 (29:04):
Yeah, but you know what, that's not a story. Nobody
cares about that. Like it's all about you know, proving
the negative. Here we saw it on a national stage
in a first preseason game. So yeah, more reps, more opportunity.
I take it from the pragmatist approach of this of
you know, for the Cleveland Browns, from everything I can
find both Barry who remember has them said that's his guy?

Speaker 3 (29:27):
Yeah that was his pick.

Speaker 1 (29:28):
Now everybody's saying, yeah, yeah it was my pick. No, Hey,
I know I said he was Barry's pick before. I
always loved the guy.

Speaker 4 (29:34):
I always that's what it was, right, But go back
to that, and you know, but because because that's where
how quickly the narrative changes. Right, We've got five guys.
They don't know what they're doing over there's Deshaun Watson,
he's just still cycling around whatever else. But where we
sit tonight, and it's it's what we've talked about for
young quarterbacks forever, based on what your team expectations are

(29:56):
as well. Nobody's expecting the Browns to win regardless of
who's under center. So some of it becomes the all right,
Kevin Stefanski, learn them up, put him out there, and
you either find out pretty fast what the guy's aptitude
is in terms of adapting and responding to the pressure
of being that guy or he wilts, and you're no

(30:18):
worse off going into twenty twenty six. Either you have
a guy or you're still at the top of the
draft board looking for the next but you're not gonna
find out if you didn't play right. That was my point,
trying to make a little earlier as we got into this,
like the fan can clamor for it.

Speaker 3 (30:33):
That's great.

Speaker 4 (30:34):
Don't be bullied by the guys out there. Don't listen
to them, even if they're on the message boards calling
for your head. Yeah yeah, yeah, Draft Day reference. You
love the movie.

Speaker 3 (30:42):
It's on right now. Draft Day is on right now.

Speaker 4 (30:45):
See as it should be, as it should be. But
it's just that idea, Jason, of you know what what
you have of this squad and if it's going to
get the players juiced even just a little bit to
go out and like they're gonna take their lumps, and
I think we all recognize that just a matter of
are you gonna lose with maybe a little bit more style,

(31:07):
because again Joe Flacco go back to when they won
and got to the playoffs, it wasn't all on his arm.
He was a touchdown interception ratio wasn't great. His completion
percentage wasn't off the charts. They had a good roster
that helped do all of that, but he gets the
credit because he's the quarterback. So this year, well, we
don't look at the same way. You've got Miles Garrett

(31:29):
and a bunch of guys. So do you have the
opportunity perhaps for Kevin Stefanski to really find out, Well,
you got about three weeks before you have to go
do this for real, so why not get him as
many reps, particularly with the older guy. I mean, Kenny
Pickett's unfortunately the guy that loses in this because he
was looking for a second lease on life. He may
not get it now.

Speaker 1 (31:51):
Exit out about a Fresco exit swollen up, Jason Smith,
Mike Harmon, Let him run.

Speaker 3 (31:55):
With the ones he's earned it.

Speaker 1 (31:57):
Time now to find out what's trending in the wide
world of sports. Mcguy I has been called the Miles
Garrett of Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 3 (32:04):
He does all his interviews without a shirt on. It's
Steve the Sega same height and weight. Also, oh yeah, yeah,
sure exactly.

Speaker 5 (32:10):
We had three three NFL exibit Like I said, three
NFL exhibitions Cleveland a winner at Carolina thirty to ten.
Brown's rookie quarterback Shuduor Sanders with two touchdown passes. He
played nearly three quarters. New England got a runback of
the opening kickoff one hundred yards for a touchdown by
rookie Treveon Henderson. Patriots won forty eight eighteen over Washington.

(32:33):
Detroit won its preseason game at Atlanta seventeen to ten.
That contest was suspended early fourth quarter after an injury
to Lyons defensive back Maurice Norris taken to a local
hospital by ambulance. His coach says he was breathing, talking,
he had movement. He is due to stay in that
hospital overnight. Norris is in stable condition. The Chargers are

(32:53):
moving Joe All to left tackle after the knee injury
to Pro bowler Rashaun Slater, who's out for the year.
Bears quarterback Haleb Williams will not play Sunday against Miami Dolphins.
Wide receiver Tyreek Hill did not practice again oblique injury.
The Celtics gave coach Joseph Missoula an extension in the
WNBA wins for Minnesota, New York and Las Vegas Tommy

(33:14):
Fleetwood leads by four strokes in Memphis. Dustin Johnson is
tied for the Live golf lead with Sergio Garcia in Chicago.
To Major League Baseball, the Red Sox lead at San
Diego ten to two in the bottom of the ninth inning.
The Dodgers have won five to one against Toronto. Clayton
Kershaw beat Max Schurzer. Each was great for six innings.
Seattle won its fifth straight game, three to two over

(33:36):
Tampa Bay. Cal Raley hit his forty third home run
of the season, a three run shot bottom of the eighth.
Arizona sent Colorado to another loss, six to one. In progress,
We've got San Francisco just going final five nothing over
the Washington Nationals, and it's just final. In San Diego
ten two, Red Sox beat the Padres. Milwaukee won its

(33:57):
seventh straight game, three to two over the Metsu drop
five straight. Saint Louis shut out the Cubs five nothing.
Philadelphia nine to one winner at Texas. Kyle Schwarber hit
his forty first homer his ninety fifth RBIs so the
Phillies first in the NL East, now three and a
half games over the Mets and the first place team
in the Al West. Houston is still a game and
a half over the Mariners. Houston won in ten innings

(34:19):
at the Yankees, five to three. The loss to closer
Devin Williams, who allowed three runs top of the tenth,
included no, come.

Speaker 3 (34:25):
On, he doesn't do that, Steve. He is lights out man.
Come on, Maybe give him the weekend off just he does.

Speaker 1 (34:32):
Pete Alonzo broke Kevin Williams.

Speaker 5 (34:36):
A winner at the White Sox Guardians, nine to five.
White Sox have lost five in a row with runners
in scoring position. They were one for fourteen tonight. Cleveland
has won eight of nine victories for Miami and Minnesota,
wins for Pittsburgh and Baltimore. Detroit came back to beat
the Angels six to five.

Speaker 3 (34:52):
Back to you, Thank you, Steve.

Speaker 1 (34:53):
Though the Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike
Harmon coming up next. Hey, last night, we said gat
things about the Raiders. Right, they're clearly gonna be the
best team.

Speaker 3 (35:05):
You don't put that on us. They're gonna be Ricky, Bobby.

Speaker 1 (35:09):
They'll be the best last place team in the NFL. Right,
They're at the top of the power rankings of last
place teams.

Speaker 3 (35:15):
In the NFL.

Speaker 1 (35:16):
Well, we kind of found out. Raiders are always gonna
do Raider things, whether you're a star, defensive lineman or quarterback.
Get to that next Jason and Mike Fox Sports Radio,
I thought.

Speaker 2 (35:29):
ASHO be sure to catch live editions of The Jason
Smith Show with Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern,
seven pm Pacific.

Speaker 1 (35:38):
Raiders Gonna Raider. Yeah, I mean Raiders, Raiders Gonna Raider.
Just what just when I said incredibly good things about
the Raiders last night, Oh my goodness.

Speaker 4 (35:49):
You're really getting folks excited.

Speaker 3 (35:51):
Now.

Speaker 1 (35:52):
I nothing I said last night changes. They will be
the best last place team in the NFL. All the
teams that are projected to finish last place, they will
be the best team like, well, they'll play harder, how
well they played well when they figured out their quarterback position,
they figured out the head coach, they figured out front office.

Speaker 3 (36:10):
Even though Brady is busy taking shots at the Jets.

Speaker 1 (36:13):
But again, best of the last place teams becuse always
remember Raiders Gonna Raider.

Speaker 5 (36:19):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (36:20):
This story has come out in the course of the
past couple of hours, and I'm sure there's gonna be
a fine at some point, because last night was the
big Welf, of course, was the big Pete Carroll revenge game,
with Pete Carroll coaching in Seattle for the first time.
But don't forget Gino Smith back in Seattle for the
first time since they decided, okay, we're moving on rather
Sam Darnold than you. So okay, yeah, Gino Smith can't

(36:45):
be that mad at the fans, right, he got you
signed a big contract.

Speaker 3 (36:48):
The Raiders want up. Nope, nope, nope, nope.

Speaker 1 (36:51):
He and Max Crosby were captured on videos making obscene
gestures towards Seattle fans as they entered the field before
their game Thursday.

Speaker 3 (37:02):
I'm shocked.

Speaker 1 (37:03):
Yeah, I know, right, Raider's gonna raider. Man, come on,
don't forget Raider's gonna raider.

Speaker 4 (37:07):
This is like so that that these this becomes a
deal is funny.

Speaker 1 (37:11):
This is like this that story of what's the fable
about the scorpion and the and the bear. Like the
bear the scorpions says to the bear, hey, will you
carry me across the the river? You're gonna sting me. No,
I'm not gonna sting you. I need you to to
to take me across the river bear says okay. Midway
through the Scorpions things the bear. The bear says, what
are you doing?

Speaker 4 (37:30):
Now?

Speaker 3 (37:30):
We're both gonna die, and the Scorpions says, oh, it's
my nature. Like I kind of.

Speaker 1 (37:33):
Feel about the raiders, like yeah, what an now we're fine,
We're fine, Raider's gonna raider?

Speaker 3 (37:37):
Why it's my nature.

Speaker 1 (37:39):
They're coming out onto the field and there's there was
a fan that had a sign that said, you know,
more overrated, uh a bigger, bigger bust Gino or JaMarcus Russell.
And both Crosby and Gino get on the field. Running
onto the field, they put their hands up and then
like they're doing like when you get booed, they do
a come on, give me the booze. But both of

(37:59):
them have their middle fingers extended. I don't know if
they thought that, hey, it'll get lost in the in
the translation, people just think like we're going hey, hey, no, no, no,
you can zoom right in and see Max Crosby a
Gino Smith.

Speaker 3 (38:11):
They're double middle fingering the fans.

Speaker 1 (38:13):
Like it's a preseason game and they're out double middle
fingering it already.

Speaker 3 (38:18):
This is not an opener. This is not a game
that this is a preseason game where.

Speaker 1 (38:24):
There's about fifty fans in attendance, and they're out there
flipping off the fans.

Speaker 3 (38:28):
Man, Raider's gonna Raider always.

Speaker 4 (38:31):
Well, I mean, look, it's it's kind of entertaining. Now.
What I think this fan was really trying to do
was get Gino to come over, take a picture and
sign it, because clearly that's the most asinine, you know,
correlation at this point. One was the top pick in
the second round and has had a decade long career
now in the natural Football League. The other guy not

(38:55):
so much. And I'll just leave it there. I don't
mean to disparage the guy, but it's a terrible sign,
like the fact that he wasted time and money to
make it and bring it. I mean he deserves to
be flipped off for that. Uh.

Speaker 1 (39:12):
And Max Crosby tries to grab the sign at some point,
like what are you doing, man?

Speaker 3 (39:16):
I mean, this is this is there's nowhere to go.

Speaker 1 (39:20):
I know, Raiders gonna I get it, the Raiders Gonna
Raider all the time. But like Geno Smith, yeah no,
I get it, but I don't. It's week one of
the preseason man, and and what what is Max?

Speaker 3 (39:35):
Max Crosby has nothing.

Speaker 1 (39:37):
Of course you're gonna get boo, but Max Crosby, it's like, oh,
it's the Max Crosby.

Speaker 4 (39:41):
Hey, that's my quarterback.

Speaker 3 (39:42):
Man.

Speaker 4 (39:43):
He didn't cry. He flipped the.

Speaker 3 (39:45):
Guy off, my quarterback.

Speaker 1 (39:47):
The only thing missing is if Pete Carroll jumped on
the field and did the same thing. Hey, everybody, Oh well,
Pete Carroll's doing the double middle he like Bud Adams did.

Speaker 3 (39:55):
Hey, here come the middle of Nights. Yeah, there you go. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (40:00):
I love all the shots of Pete and you know,
just being hyped and twitching out and everything from from
start to finish.

Speaker 3 (40:08):
Man, I mean, really, what are you doing?

Speaker 1 (40:10):
Like you're the you know, you're the starting court Geno Smith.
Max Crawls be like, okay, the guy's been a loose
cannon for his whole career. He's a guy at joint
practices yelling sack sack when he gets near the quarterback,
like he's blowing up the play.

Speaker 3 (40:23):
Gino Smith, you're the starting quarterback, man.

Speaker 1 (40:26):
No quarterbacks jump on the field flipping off fans as
they got it. Nobody does that because quarterbacks don't do it.
Like all the good things that Gino Smith is gonna, hey,
gonna set things up with the Raiders.

Speaker 3 (40:37):
It's awesome.

Speaker 1 (40:38):
And now here's a quarterback flipping off the fans. Now
I'm like, Gino Smith is gonna ruin my Raiders prediction.
Now they're gonna be one of the worst uh, of
the of the last place teams in the NFL.

Speaker 4 (40:47):
This show, well two things. One well down where I
had him. One, he's a Raider, I mean, so he's
embraced it. The other from Max Crosby is uh, he
is doing a public service by saying you better move.

Speaker 3 (41:00):
We're I'll hit you. Oh man, We get back in
the Chador, Sanders and more. Next Fox
