Listening to Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (00:31):
Hello, Welcome in side hour three of The Jason Smith
Show with my bes friend Mike Harmon. Second half, Baby,
let's go live for the ti rack dot com Studios
tirec dot com. I help you get there an unmatched selection, fast,

(00:51):
should be. NBA update, Final game of the night at
the Crypt Lakers and the t Wolves. Lakers had busted
out to a twenty point lead over Minnesota. The lead
is still fifteen right now. Early in the third quarter,
Luka Doncic on his way to what could be another
triple double. He was hot out of the gate, then

(01:12):
was able to sit for a long time. Yeah, you
don't need him, and also he could, you know, get
some rest. Thirteen eight and four for Luca tonight. Meanwhile
Lebron James twenty one to five rebounds, Lakers pushing the
lead back up to eighteen now just in the last
couple of seconds here. So this is a this is
kind of what we thought about the Lakers. When Luca

(01:35):
picks things up, their offense is gonna be great. Their
defense been the best in the NBA. Everything is coming
up Lakers right now.

Speaker 3 (01:41):
Man, Well, as soon as you change your offense too,
we're just gonna do nothing but shoot three point shots.
I mean, you've played directly into their heads.

Speaker 4 (01:49):
I don't know how we're gonna score them.

Speaker 3 (01:50):
It's like when teams completely, you know, they get down
ten in an NFL game.

Speaker 4 (01:54):
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (01:55):
We're abandoning the run game. We're not gonna be able
to hang with these guys. They're just they're just too
strong offestivation. No, you still need the run game. Likewise,
here you see the Wolves and look maybe too little
too late, but actually attacking the rim and trying to
go after what we've long established. And I think he
as a collective basketball watching enterprise, that they don't have

(02:18):
a lot of depth in the front court, So attack
the basket, make him work as opposed to settling for
jump shots when you know most of your guys can't
hit jump shots. So when you're chasing seventeen points down though,
because defensively, you're getting caught asleep with Luca and Lebron
And that's the tale at the tape.

Speaker 4 (02:37):
At this point, it's like, you can't be lazy for
a moment because they're gonna.

Speaker 1 (02:40):
Wizz a seventy foot pass patched your head for an
easy layup. Jackson, Hey, is look what I caught? He
got hit in the chest earlier. It's like and he
had plenty of time. It's like dodgeball. Oh, but it
stuck to him and he turned and he scored. Since
we started talking, the Lakers are on a ten to
two run to push this lead back out to nineteen.

(03:00):
Uh so, uh that's where we sit right now again,
about eight minutes to go in the third quarter.

Speaker 4 (03:06):
Everything is coming up, Lakers. We need that to all
adopt the headbands though.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
Uh yeah, okay, I'm okay with the head bands. I
think the head bands is pretty good. Look yeah, I mean, well,
but everybody who's got a shaved head. They all look
like Alex Caruso. Is that Caruso? Is that Caruso? That Caruso? No,
I no, I'm just saying, like dog connect if he
had a shaved head, would say that's Alex Caruso. But
Caruso had the headmand forever still does, still does Alex

(03:33):
rim and uh boy, they still missing the Lakers, but
maybe not as much.

Speaker 3 (03:37):
Do you mean as much as the use in Chicago?
Uh sure, scratch. I mean he played hard. Yeah, yeah,
this generation's Joe Kim Noah.

Speaker 4 (03:46):
Yeah, they plays hard.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
They he played hard, and they won just as many
games without him. It really has been something works nicely.

Speaker 4 (03:54):
But at least they was a guy. He was a
spark plug that the people can get.

Speaker 1 (03:57):
That's okay, yeah, yeah, okay, lunch pail guy burn your
heart had to work and go to war. So with
the combine kicking off tonight, we had the big news
last night from abdual Carter that potentially a foot injury
might force him to have surgery. Maybe that puts his
status as the number one overall picking the draft up
in the air, but today it looks like he was advised.
He found enough doctors to tell him, no, you don't

(04:19):
need surgery. So he's going to play through. It's still
gonna have his pro day, still gonna go forward and
imagine manage the stress reaction in his foot. So the
other player who really wants to go number one overall
is Travis Hunter. You and I had the debate a
couple of times last night who you would take at
number one, and we differed. I had Travis Hunter, You
had a dual Carter.

Speaker 3 (04:40):
I also had a team of doctors that I needed
to confer with before I put that card up to
the commission.

Speaker 4 (04:45):
You can listen to the whole thing in the podcast.
I want to make sure. I want to make sure
everything is all right. It's the thirteenth tie breaking doctor saying.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
But today Hunter got to meet the media and talked
about being the number one overall pick, which again which
is something that he wants, and was asked about the
reality that he could actually play both ways in the NFL,
and Travis Hunter just said, yeah, it's kind of my plan.

Speaker 5 (05:13):
Uh, you know this, some meanings. Our receiver did some
meanings at dB. So it's still up in the air.
They say, everybody, nobody has ever done it for really
the way I do it. But I tell him that
I'm just different.

Speaker 4 (05:29):
I'm a different I'm just different, And clearly yeah he
has been. Uh.

Speaker 1 (05:33):
This is another reason why we talked last night, why
I take Travis Hunter number one, because if it's equal,
everything being equal, you have a superstar defensive back wide
receiver is somebody we haven't seen ever in the NFL,
and you have a superstar defensive lineman.

Speaker 4 (05:49):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (05:49):
I want to take the superstar guy that's done something
and doing things that we've never seen before, simply because
he's gonna come in and be a superstar right out
of the gate, and it's gonna be about relevancy, attention.
We have a superstar, We have an identity. The Titans
will have an identity as to who Travis Hunter is. Hey,
Travis Hunter is their star. Kids are gonna be wearing
his jersey, Adults are gonna be wearing his jersey.

Speaker 4 (06:09):
Let's go. Dogs will be wearing his jersey. He'll be the.

Speaker 1 (06:12):
Guy saying, hey, Benny, give me that mayonnaise. Well, I'm
doing this commercial now. You went Anchorman with Baxter there. Uh,
And and when you think about it from this perspective,
He talked about playing both ways being harder in football
than it is in baseball, and well, yeah, anything in football,
it's harder than baseball because of the physical.

Speaker 4 (06:33):
Aspect to it. So yeah, I got it.

Speaker 1 (06:35):
Yeah, But the point, the point remains is that you
could be getting football show heyo Tani at number one overall,
you could be getting football show, heyo Tani. Because my
plan is to play both ways every play. I've done
it through high school, done it thro high school, did
it through college, all the way through. At a high level,
he was playing into overtime games. He's playing every single

(06:57):
snap at defensive back and wide receiver. Now could he
actually get to the NFL and play every snap.

Speaker 4 (07:03):
In the game.

Speaker 1 (07:04):
No, they'll want to give him a breather, so they'll
take him out just like anybody. He would come out
for a series or a couple of plays here, go
back in. He would come out on offense. Basically, Hey,
this is going to be a running player. We're gonna
this is a specific play designed here, so we don't
need you to run on the field when you could
get a couple of plays off. But this is what
he wants to do. This is what he's done what
he did in college. It's one on the Heisman Trophy.

(07:26):
He won the Bolitannikoff Award for Best wide Receiver. He
won the Beneric Award for Best defensive Player. You could
potentially get the NFL's version of show Heyo Tani. Why
wouldn't you take him number one? You could get a
defensive I do a cardish true great player, right, terrific
defensive line, driven, defensive end, was great at Penn State.
Wants to be the number one overall pick. I dig

(07:46):
that he's great. You could get show heyo Tani. I mean,
I mean that. That's where I can't believe it's even debatable.
I can't believe that the Titans haven't actually engaged in
contract talks with Travis Hunter already saying hey, this is
what we're gonna do here. Let's get this all taken
care of. I know everything is slotted, but let's do
this and let's have a great announcement. I really, I

(08:07):
know the NFL wouldn't want that, but your Tennessey I
can't believe your mind's not made up that is Travis
Hunter at number one.

Speaker 3 (08:13):
Well, I gotta believe on some level those conversations would
have already been had. I do love the shots of
him wandering around Indianapolis with the backpack and all the
hats from the teams that he talked with strapped to
the back of it. But as he alluded to in
the clip that we played to parse it out, you know,
he's had meetings as a wide receiver. He's had meetings

(08:34):
as a cornerback. Obviously he's there participating as a cornerback.
And something we talked about a couple of weeks ago
when it was announced that that was going to be
how he was tagged, just seemed silly, right, Let him
work out with whoever he wants to work out with.
You're at the combine, you want to make it a
TV show. There's interest, right, and that's part of what
we're selling here in terms of for Tennessee and what

(08:58):
they are are looking to do. Now, we remember a
couple of weeks ago, uh bergrzy Borgrsey, Yeah, the GM
of the Titans's talking about you know, we've got a
generational player. We can't look away from that. And at
the time, it was all right, which guy is that
is the two way guy that you think can play

(09:18):
two ways in that next level or is it a
guy like Carter or did you establish somebody else that
we haven't even.

Speaker 4 (09:25):
Thought generation player?

Speaker 1 (09:27):
But Kyle McCord, is that generation another guy that you
decided is for the position and you just gave it
the grandiose speech there at that moment.

Speaker 3 (09:36):
But that's question is between those two guys. All right,
let's just boil it down to that. I like your
argument for the fake, for the fact that, like, what
do we talk about for eleven years? How do we
monetize things? What are pricing in disease? You know, watching
even today the announcement from Iowa basketball.

Speaker 4 (09:51):
They're gonna do a preseason fever game.

Speaker 3 (09:53):
Sold out, no time, flat secondary market, get in right now,
five and fifty.

Speaker 1 (09:59):
Dollars a concert. But it's like I didn't get my
I didn't call in time. What'd you call in eight
minutes after they went on sale?

Speaker 3 (10:05):
By by comparison, we talked about that Sun's game the
other day four dollars Oh yeah, so you know, just
but we love those stories and for Tennessee, it becomes
a football and what gets you back towards the promised
land first? Is it Travis Hunter? Can he be that guy?
Because you still need a quarterback, right, Will love us?

Speaker 2 (10:28):
Ain't that guy?

Speaker 3 (10:29):
I love Will Levis's arm? But how many what the
hell are you doing moments can you have in a
given year and without your coach just putting his head
set down and walking away and just saying you're still
gonna pay me. I had to endure that. But so
going forward, they're they're in this quarterback sweep stakes obviously too.

Speaker 1 (10:48):
And that's where you know, are you convinced you just
want to wait it out and keep building in that
magically you're gonna be there in position to draft the
guy you want in a better class next year.

Speaker 3 (11:00):
Maybe that's the case. Travis Hutter gives you all those
ancillary things that we talk about. So you know, I
put on the straight football hat, you know, I said it.
I want the apt right, I want the attack or
protector or the thrower. But for the largesse of a
franchise that needs a shot in the arm, then yeah,
you bring him in because if he can make one

(11:21):
or two plays a game, you're in a division that
you can go and steal.

Speaker 4 (11:24):
A couple of games. Right, who are you scared of?
In division?

Speaker 3 (11:27):
Houston should be better in theory, right, they've got to
go fix the O line. But Joe Mixon still performed
in spite of that. In theory, the football gods are
a little better to you in terms of the health
of your wide receivers, which we saw felled time and
time again. The wide receiver tight end room got pretty
thin after a while. But for the Titans, yeah, you're

(11:50):
always gonna get me on the marketing and sales of
I got a guy that.

Speaker 4 (11:54):
You haven't seen this before. I did. Like when he
was asked about kick kick returns and punt returns. He goes,
I'd already have Yeah, yeah, I'm not gonna do that again.
I already got you.

Speaker 1 (12:03):
But how about this from this perspective of you want
to keep your job, right, because if you take Travis
Hunter number one overall and he's not good, right, let's
just say it doesn't work. Well, okay, the guy could
have been a generate. That's a guy you try to
take number one overall. If you take up Dual Carter
number one overall and he's not an absolute superstar and
Travis Hunter, is that gets you fired? Oh, defensive end

(12:25):
ain't get you fired.

Speaker 4 (12:27):
Right.

Speaker 3 (12:27):
It's like drafting that offensive line, like j Z Smith
got fired and got drafted. He got fired too, But
when he got drafted second overall, right.

Speaker 4 (12:35):
It's like, what the hell are we doing? Yeah right,
it's like I don't want him whatever.

Speaker 3 (12:39):
He's like, no, we have to draft to God to
look at these skate like, I don't care. Get me
the quarterback, the running back on the wide receiver. I
need sexiness, get it.

Speaker 1 (12:49):
Get it gets you fired. When if you if the
rest of the NFL has to watch a guy you
could have taken number one overall, Not that you missed
on a guy, it's it's something, Hey, if you miss
on a guy and he's really good, well, okay, you
didn't have him rated there. But when it's hey, you
could take this guy at number one, what's gonna how
are you gonna keep your job longer? Well, if Travis

(13:09):
Hunter stinks, I'll be you know, okay, I might still
be Okay. If Abdul Carter is not great, Travis Hunters,
oh that that could get me. That could get me fired,
because how do you pass on this guy? How do
you pass on the next the show Tani of the NFL.
So both perspectives there, pump the Brakes with he's playing

(13:29):
playing both straight disrespectful.

Speaker 4 (13:31):
He's gonna be one trying to say.

Speaker 1 (13:38):
Okay, Tony hasn't hasn't done is doing on the diamond. Okay,
he hasn't paid better than anything that Travis Hunter will
ever do in the NFL. He hasn't pictured the Dodgers.
Let him picture the Dodger. Oh, I don't know about that.
I really Yeah. I think physically going both ways in the.

Speaker 4 (13:54):
NFL, Yeah, I think that.

Speaker 6 (13:55):
I think.

Speaker 1 (13:57):
I think that's a little bit hard. No, I've watched enough.
I've watched enough Jets. Don't don't put that on me.
Don't don't pedalize me with don't disrespect I'm saying he's
the show.

Speaker 4 (14:05):
Hey, Otani of the NFL.

Speaker 1 (14:07):
He hasn't even played a snap. We don't know what
he is. Okay, Otani was a DH. He had an
unbelievable season that we've never seen in the history of
Major League Baseball.

Speaker 4 (14:15):
But he was a DH.

Speaker 1 (14:16):
He didn't pitch. He's gonna pitch. He noticed how he
has pitched. I played the field before. Yeah, what he's
done is second to none. Okay, Travis Hunter did it
and won the Heisman Trophy. That's a pretty good thing.
I'm playing. Nobody's okay. Well, they still had some big guests.
They didn't play in a conference. It wasn't But yeah,
the pod too. I'm pretty surespect. I'm pretty sure his

(14:36):
performance translates. I would just ask Josh Allen, Hey, dude,
you played no money. Do you feel a tough time
in the NFL? No, Josh Allen's worked out pretty well.
He's won an MVP he didn't deserve. How dare you
he earned that m VP?

Speaker 3 (14:48):
Hey, just because a bunch of dopes for a number
of years gave it to the guy that was the
the first team All Pro.

Speaker 4 (14:56):
Doesn't mean it was right.

Speaker 3 (14:57):
Doesn't mean it was right, because why are we voting
for Offensive Players of the Year?

Speaker 4 (15:01):
What the hell else were they doing playing offense?

Speaker 1 (15:04):

Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (16:57):
The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon Live from the
tire dot Com Studios. Anthony Edwards gets thrown out and
the Timberwolves are trying to close in on the Lakers
a little bit. Eighty three seventy one. LA has the
lead late in the third quarter. Luka Donziic thirteen points,

(17:17):
nine rebounds, five assists. Lebron leading the way for the Lakers.
He's got twenty seven eleven rebounds and four assists, and
he is just energized and rejuvenated either like a.

Speaker 4 (17:27):
Little kid running around the court. Nice fun.

Speaker 3 (17:30):
Twenty two twenty three games left till the playoffs.

Speaker 1 (17:33):
He's realizing, Oh, I thought I was got to play
my last four years for empty stats. We got Luke
II get maybe one another to how.

Speaker 3 (17:39):
You change his mood though, is forard side with that
next two weeks of their schedule, because remember how he
complained about that on social media.

Speaker 4 (17:46):
That's how you get him. Oh, okay, Joy tonight, Lebron,
I'm with that.

Speaker 5 (17:51):
Now.

Speaker 1 (17:52):
Meanwhile, we'll keep you updated on this again. Game getting
set to go to the fourth quarter. Lakers over the
Tea Wolves. The Gold State Warriors tonight beat Orlando one
twenty one to one fifteen. What the significance of this, Well,
let's just say Steph Curry decided.

Speaker 4 (18:08):
You know, I'm gonna score all the points.

Speaker 1 (18:10):
Twelve three pointers for Steph tonight on the way to
a fifty six point game.

Speaker 6 (18:16):
Curry, guarded by Carter Junior, gets another screen, bounce past
the post over the Pojepski post, had a layup and
gave it up. Pejevsky out to Curry, pump big fly
by three ball.

Speaker 4 (18:27):
Got it with the buzzer sounding the shot clock was
widing down. This twelve three of the night. He's got
a fifty two point game.

Speaker 1 (18:38):
So there was on Warriors Radio Network on the call,
and he did some free throws and go to fifty
six for the game. Look, this is there's a couple
of teams of the deadline that completely turn their fortunes
around it. We talk about the Lakers a lot because
it was Luca, but the Warriors the same way. Not

(18:58):
because you know, look Steph is still Steph, but being
thirty six and knowing that he still has games like
this in him, the Warriors decided, okay, we need a
too prong to tower, two part attack to get us
back to being able to compete for a championship the
last two years, a couple of years of Steph's prime
because he still has it going on right now. And

(19:21):
we love the Jimmy Butler trade when it happened, and
we told you the night of the trade, hey, this
is not done for just this year. When they extended
him for two more years and fifty million, this is
the Warriors saying we have another move coming, and we
have we know because we've always worked with a big three.
That's how we've won the championships. It's how our dynasty

(19:42):
was built, right, we had big threes because it just
works not every team that wants to go out and
get a big three winds up winning because maybe the
pieces don't fit as well. But they've worked with a
couple of big threes in Golden State. They worked with
Splash Brothers and Draymond. They worked with Splash Brothers and
Kevin Durant. Now Draymond's not the same Klay Thompson's in Dallas. Okay,

(20:03):
what's our big big three? And they knew they was
a two step process. You're not gonna get both guys
at the deadline, But they went out and got Jimmy Butler.
Part one complete. They are seven and one since they
traded for Jimmy Butler. And it's gonna be too late
for this year because this year the team's at the
top of the West are just gonna be a little
too much Oklahoma City, the Lakers, and the Nuggets are playing well.

(20:26):
The Warriors are gonna need just a little bit more
to try to get through the marathon of a playoff.
But in the off season, this is part two to
the plan. They'll bring in one more player, becase, remember
they made this big trade with the Heat, holding on
to all the young assets they had. They have to
give up anybody that was hey, here's someone that boy,
if we have to give up this person, that's a
big trade chip in the offseason. So they're gonna go

(20:47):
out when the season ends and get that third superstar. Right.
This whole thing was a two part plan all along.
They have Jimmy Buckets. Now they're gonna go out and
get their third player because there's gonna be a lot
of players available in the ot whether it's well Embiid
or Paul George, a lot of high priced guys, and
the window for the Warriors to potentially win another title

(21:07):
is gonna be back open. They'll be back up at
the top, competing with the teams at the top of
the Western Conference. It's not the old days where they
were number one. Everybody else is trying to knock them off. No,
they'll be back up there with the other teams. But
that's why we love the trade for Butler and part
two of the plans gonna come out this summer and
subby the war is going to next year with three
star players and they're gonna say, now, come get us now.

(21:29):
Now we're gonna be back and we're gonna be something.
And they're gonna extend that last couple of years instead
of Steph just coming in putting up empty stats, and
now it's gonna be two years where we can really
make a run of the championship. I love everything the
Warriors did. I love them going to get Butler. I
love whatever they're gonna do in the offseason. I'm sure
is going to work out because they do nothing but

(21:50):
make the right moves. They bring in the right players.
So yeah, everything is looking good for Golden State.

Speaker 3 (21:55):
A lot of credit to done Leavy, Junior and company
because questions abound after left. It was on TV and
it seemed like there was this period of unrest. And
you bring in Jimmy Butler, and certainly he's got his detractors,
and it's not gonna say he's handled everything the right way,
but you talk about a guy who's been able to
win and maybe have his antics payoff. Not a good

(22:21):
lesson here, kids, because you're gonna cause a lot of
angst where you are for yourself with the people around you.
But hey, the ends justify the means. Sometimes he wins
the show down with pat Riley, finds his way to
Golden State. They win again tonight he's only one of
seven from the field, but doing all the other dirty
work for the squad, and you got really only work

(22:41):
from the bench from Quinton Post seven foot out of
Boston College, averaging about eight points per game. He came
through with a nice eighteen point performance here, seven of nine.
So trying to figure out the bench right. You did
bring in Buddy healed in the offseason as Klay Thompson
departs and you're trying to remake it. But Putzemski's there.
Had a bad shooting night tonight, but most nights he's

(23:03):
a guy with range and Steph going back to the Olympics,
we've seen still can be special on nights. He's gonna
he's just gonna go on fire. Right tonight twelve three
porters perfect from the line as always, but you always
have a puncher's chance, right when you've got a score
like that, who can go off and you've got enough
guys that are willing to do the dirty work and

(23:23):
the grind inside. When you talk about Butler and Draymond Green,
one of the themes of the night talking about being
a bit older and still being able to produce, Like
we're watching Lebron James running around against the Tea Wolves tonight.
Is Jimmy Butler's a guy in his mid thirties. That
was one of the big talking points of why would
you bring him on? He's gonna be this like, well,
he doesn't play like that. Yeah, he may act like

(23:45):
a petulant child like he's twelve, but well.

Speaker 4 (23:48):
When he's happy, play right. When he's unhappy, you don't
want to be near him.

Speaker 3 (23:52):
But that's shit, which is why you know it's you know, sorry,
Frostburg Island. Voke his name here. It's the snell Zilla thing.
I need him for a short win and I need
that carrot out there of what the next contract, what
that next thing is going to be. Otherwise I'm not
doing it for Jimmy Butler. It's a short contract, just
another two years and he goes to a place where

(24:12):
there's an obvious leader, because that's the other place. Look
at all the places that he's been, who's been the
guy to be in the locker room and be like,
shut up, calm down.

Speaker 4 (24:21):
Philadelphia and Johan Beid come on Chicago with the children.

Speaker 3 (24:26):
They had running around about the children and guys that
really hadn't coached at the NBA level. No, and then
you go down and he's Spoe. But the locker room, right,
players versus coach. Right, in terms of it, it became
a showdoun with pat Riley and then the locker room
there was nobody.

Speaker 4 (24:44):
To be like, just shut up and play basketball.

Speaker 3 (24:46):
So he goes here. It's clearly Steph's team. He's not
the number one, and he's either either falls in line
for the short period or he'll ship them off somewhere else.

Speaker 1 (24:55):
Look, and this is the maddening part of trades with
NBA star right, this is the maddening part. And I
get it, and this is when fans get upset. But
they have to understand that there's only certain things a
team can do. Where we spend a lot of time
on the Luca trade right where it was, hey, how

(25:15):
did you not make it work? How did the Mavericks
not make it work? Well, they had six years of
making it work. How did you not get him to
stay in shape? How did you know we tried it
wasn't going to work, and we'd made the decision to
trade him. Now Luca has come to the Lakers, everything's
been great, and because he's put on notice, he's going
to have to stay in shape. He's not gonna be
able to you know, hookah or drink beer. Right, He's

(25:39):
got to stay in shape. It's nothing that would have
happened in Dallas. If he stayed in Dallas, he would
not have done it.

Speaker 7 (25:46):
Right.

Speaker 1 (25:46):
They tried to get him to do it for a
long time but they couldn't. But once they got his
attention and they traded him. The byproduct of that is
that Mavericks have to understand, Okay, we know now he's
going to go to his new destination and do things
for them he he didn't do for us, and that's maddening.
And fans have to understand that, hey, Luca can go there.
It doesn't mean that you were missing this exact stuff

(26:08):
because he wasn't gonna do it for your team, but
he's gonna do it for the Lakers. Because this is
what happens when you get traded and you see your
your basketball mortality put in front of you and you
lose one hundred million dollars. Yea, the same thing for
Jimmy Butler. It drives fans crazy that here's a guy
that can talk his way out of Miami and the

(26:30):
second or third place. He's talked his way. I don't
like it here. I'm not happy. I want to get traded.
And it's make it work. It's been here for so long,
you've gotten to the NBA Finals. Make it work. And
fans have to understand it's not gonna work. He's not
gonna he never wants to play for Miami again. You
have to trade him. And now he goes to a
golden state. And guess what, he's happy because he gets

(26:53):
to where he needs to be and he's happy playing basketball.
Now we'll continue, you know, I don't know, but i'd
like to think that for this year, the next couple
of years playing with Steph Jimmy Butler's gonna be pretty happy.
It was on his list of preferred destinations. So maybe
it's a couple of years before he gets unhappy. But
he was never gonna play happy and be great in
Miami again. It's the same thing the Browns are dealing
with right now with Miles Garrett. We want to keep

(27:13):
Miles Garrett. No, I want out. Here's a long term
contract extension. No, he turned out a long term contract extension.
Today he wants out, and Browns fans are gonna be
mad when they trade him. You're trading the defensive player
of the year. How do you not make it work?
We tried and it didn't work. And he's gonna go somewhere,
maybe San Francisco, maybe wherever it's gonna be, and he's
still gonna be great. He's gonna be playing defensive Player

(27:36):
of the Year level and fans are gonna go, why
is he doing that for us? It wasn't gonna happen anymore.
And sometimes it just has to be understood that we've
gone as far as we can and this relationship is over,
and now the next relationship could be great, but this
relationship is over. It's like it's it's like, yes, break up,

(28:00):
and the other person may go to a next relationship
and suddenly go, oh wow, like you know, you know
what I think about this thing about a movie like Boyhood. Right,
here's Ethan Hawk and he's with Patricia Arquette and their kid,
and he's a horrible dad.

Speaker 4 (28:12):
Right, He's not around, he's not doing anything. They try
to stay together, but they can't. He's a bad dad.

Speaker 1 (28:17):
So they get divorced. And now the next family he
goes gets married and suddenly now he's superdad.

Speaker 4 (28:22):
And I always thought that was.

Speaker 1 (28:23):
A really underrated part of that movie where it was like, wow,
Ethan Hawk's a jerk, right, he never really could make
it work with his kid here, But second marriage, second chance.

Speaker 4 (28:31):
Hey, he's super dad. Right.

Speaker 1 (28:33):
That was a big part of that movie. But and
you're mad because why couldn't you be that dad here? Well,
you just, no matter what, it didn't help for us
to stay together. You were never going to be that dad.
But you go to your new family or that's kind
of how life goes, and it may wear off. They're right,
but you have to understand that. That's why it was
such a great move for the Warriors because they're bringing
in Jimmy Buckets. They didn't bring in a malcontent who

(28:54):
didn't want to play anymore, and you're taking a chance
with it's we know, getting him and bringing him here.
He's gonna be fantastic, And that's what the that's why
this move has worked great.

Speaker 4 (29:03):
That's why I love what the Warriors are doing. And
they have they have.

Speaker 1 (29:06):
They were going down a hill into the hole, and
now they've come back out of the hole. And by
this time next year, we're gonna be saying, hey, man,
Warriors a team in the way, they could get out
of the West and get to the NBA Finals.

Speaker 4 (29:17):
They'll make whatever.

Speaker 1 (29:18):
That mysterious move is gonna be in the off season,
and it's gonna be Steph and buckets and player C
and it's gonna work.

Speaker 3 (29:24):
Yeah, I just try quick, just to tie it all together.
The the idea of all of these guys, every contract
isn't I'm not paying you for what you did, right.
This is not a residual kind of Hey, we get
an extra two points because once upon a time Steph
averaged thirty five a game, or Luca was in the
NBA finals.

Speaker 4 (29:45):
No, it's about what you're gonna do.

Speaker 3 (29:46):
And Luca's got a lot of weary miles on his
body from playing in Europe. And clearly you know rules
of engagement. Maybe a little different in terms of training
table and and what you had to do, but you
also practice a ton All of those stuff are are
well documented.

Speaker 4 (30:01):
But they looked ahead and said, well, what's.

Speaker 3 (30:04):
Our analytics model say for five years from now, seven
years from now?

Speaker 4 (30:09):
And maybe don't care.

Speaker 3 (30:10):
Maybe it was just ownership saying I'm not paying that
guy for whatever reason, and it's got nothing to do.
Maybe he snubs someone that wanted an autograph at some point.

Speaker 2 (30:18):
We may never know.

Speaker 3 (30:19):
They're doing everything they can to muddy the waters in
the aftermath. But for Jimmy Butler, happy, Jimmy Butler plays basketball.
It's long established. And the sad part is we can
do that with every jersey that he's ever worn.

Speaker 4 (30:33):
Wow, remember that run he had here?

Speaker 3 (30:35):
And right now honeymoon phase for the Warriors, and so
long as Steph is there, I suspect it stays there.

Speaker 1 (30:40):
Oh.

Speaker 4 (30:40):
I'm making fifty to sixty million dollars.

Speaker 1 (30:43):
Yeah, that helps a little bit. We're going to extend.
You'd give you one hundred million. Oh, one hundred million. Oh,
I didn't even think I was that sho Okay, I
about like seventy five. No, I'll take a hundred. That's great,
nice round numbers, mate. So I'm telling you about what
the Warriors getting it right? Just wait, just wa got
to wait a little bit longer, but just wait. Time
now to find out what's trending in the wide world
of sports. From someone who's been called the Jimmy Butler

(31:05):
of Fox Sports Radio. Love Jimmy, Yeah, having an incredible career.
Also wants to fist fight pat Riley. It's Monty Blagos.
Maybe a couple of times.

Speaker 7 (31:15):
May maybe I love that I loved I love Jimmy.
He's one of my faves. And I'm with you, Jason.
I think it's just.

Speaker 2 (31:23):
Wait for the Warriors.

Speaker 7 (31:24):
They're they're getting it together. The Lakers are getting it
together against the Timberwolves. It's ninety seven, excuse me, ninety
two to seventy seven.

Speaker 4 (31:33):
La up.

Speaker 7 (31:34):
Anthony Edwards has been ejected from the game. That's happened around.

Speaker 2 (31:37):
The third quarter.

Speaker 7 (31:38):
Midway through the third quarter, he got his second technical
of the game, also his sixteenth technical of the year.
So he's gonna be suspended for tomorrow's game against Utah.

Speaker 1 (31:48):
This is a lot of people are gonna be upset
with that one. Why he his lines before the game?
Oh no, it was off assists and six and a
half rebounds.

Speaker 4 (31:58):
No, five assists and six rebound.

Speaker 7 (32:00):
Forgetting I'm so glad I didn't do a parlay because
that would have been me right there. Yeah, So he's
gonna be objected for tomorrow's or suspended for tomorrow's game.

Speaker 2 (32:10):
This was his third career ejection.

Speaker 7 (32:12):
I don't really know why he got that second technical.
It was unclear to me.

Speaker 4 (32:16):
I think he may have his mouth. He threw the
ball in the stands, got a delay of game.

Speaker 2 (32:21):
What's that happened before that?

Speaker 4 (32:22):
He got a delay of game?

Speaker 1 (32:23):
He was mad it was his second technical because the
first one was when he pushed Yard Vanderbild from behind.

Speaker 2 (32:28):
That one I understood. This one.

Speaker 4 (32:30):
I was like, he's on the floor.

Speaker 7 (32:31):
And then it was because he threw the ball in
the stands.

Speaker 4 (32:33):
Yeah, did you bet the technicals?

Speaker 2 (32:34):
I should have?

Speaker 1 (32:35):
Oh, okay, I don't know if you bet the over
of one and a half on Edwards Actually.

Speaker 4 (32:40):
Technicals money for Clippers Lakers. That's why I go.

Speaker 2 (32:43):
Clippers, Love City.

Speaker 7 (32:45):
Lebron James is twenty seven points of the sixteen rebounds
in this one. Again, Minnesota's trying to make a little comeback.
They're down by ten ninety to eighty two.

Speaker 4 (32:52):
Steph Curry, though, has.

Speaker 7 (32:53):
The game of the night so far with fifty six
points twelve threes. Twenty one to one fifteen was the
final score against the chick in Orlando. Nicola Jogic with
another triple double, but this time it didn't matter because
the Bucks still beat the Nuggets win twenty one to
one twelve. The Mavericks had a one ozho three to
ninety six win over the Hornets and Zion Williamson with
his first career triple double as the Pelicans defeated the

(33:15):
Suns in Phoenix one twenty four to one sixteen. The
Suns are just no. Wenel. In men's college hoops number
twenty three, Saint Mary's is on top of Loyola Marormount
forty seven to thirty six with about ten minutes to
go in the game. And on the ice, the Golden
Knights have scored again, Yes they have. They're about to
beat the black Hawks. Seven five is the score down
to the final seconds.

Speaker 2 (33:36):
And do you guys hear the story?

Speaker 4 (33:37):
I'm gonna go back to the NBA real quick.

Speaker 7 (33:39):
Remember, like a couple of weeks ago, there was that
story that Victor win Bayama swapped jerseys with Loyer and
then the dad put that jersey on auction. Seventy three
thousand is what it was auctioned for. And apparently the
dad is having buyer's remorse.

Speaker 2 (33:57):
Sellers sellers.

Speaker 4 (34:00):
Now he's trying to stop it from happening.

Speaker 7 (34:03):
I mean, like what an idiot.

Speaker 4 (34:05):
What an idiot?

Speaker 2 (34:06):
Why would you do this in.

Speaker 4 (34:07):
The first day? Boy didn't want to get rid of
it at the last minute.

Speaker 7 (34:11):
You don't say, you don't say, but yeah, seventy three
thousand is what it's sold for, and now he's trying
to stop it.

Speaker 1 (34:17):
I wouldn't shoot ball. I would have told my kid, Hey,
I'll buy you the nicest slimby jersey you want that
fits you.

Speaker 4 (34:26):
About that, but I'm going to take.

Speaker 1 (34:28):
This seventy three grand minus whatever I had to pay
the auction house for it, and it's going right into
your college fund. And by the time you're ready for college.
Dat by the time you're ready for college, this will
pay for one year. Yeah, one year of college.

Speaker 4 (34:39):
College. I'm not college, dad, because you took my jersey. Yes,
slamming the door.

Speaker 1 (34:45):
He could runt the school bus like in road trip.
You could drive all the way there and try and
beat the package.

Speaker 4 (34:50):
That's true. Oh yeah, yeah, I didn't think about that.

Speaker 1 (34:52):
About that your package is out for delivery, running up
to the es guy to grab it out of the
back of the truck. Or no, he just sees you
guy and uses like chloroform on them all. Wow, puts
on the ups, guys, you don't just start going through
all the packages.

Speaker 4 (35:05):
Yeah, I mean just on that guy's back to look
at the ring. Unbelievable. Yeah, seventy three grand. That's a
good one man. There will be more lawyers.

Speaker 1 (35:14):
Thank you, Thank you, Monsey, Jason Smith, Mike Harmon live
from the Tirac dot Com Studios. Coming up next, I'm
gonna ask you a very simple question about the NBA tonight,
and it's going to be much more in depth than
you think it is.

Speaker 4 (35:29):
It's next right here, Jason and Mike Fox.

Speaker 2 (35:34):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific, Fox Sports.

Speaker 1 (35:44):
Radio The Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike Harmon.

Speaker 4 (35:47):
I've been lipsticking to Gold Digger since it started. I
was waiting to see how long.

Speaker 2 (35:51):
I mean, do you like this?

Speaker 4 (35:51):
Should you like the Glee version better?

Speaker 5 (35:53):
Uh? No?

Speaker 2 (35:54):
I like this?

Speaker 4 (35:55):
Okay, folk kids, and I gotta take all that.

Speaker 1 (35:58):
Uh So, tonight, I'm gonna say to you something in
the NBA. I mean, you know what happened, but the
question is still going to be apropos. We talked about
the big night. Steph Curry had tonight fifty six points.
If I said to you, you had to pick from
one of these two things, yeah, okay for Zion Williamson.

(36:19):
And the choice was did Zion tonight A not play
or B get his first career triple double. The average
NBA fan is gonna go.

Speaker 4 (36:34):
I don't know. Uh, I don't know. I don't know.

Speaker 1 (36:39):
Now it turns out tonight he had a phenomenal night,
first triple double of his career in just thirty one minutes,
had a tremendous night for the Pelicans in their win.

Speaker 4 (36:48):
And it's something right.

Speaker 1 (36:50):
And I hope that that this continues for Zion, and
I hope he, you know, find some way here as
he's closing on his fifth year in the NBA to
stay on the court. But the reason I say this
is why this is a big deal. Like the average
NBA fan, he designed played and I get a triple double.
Oh man, I don't know. He has fallen so far
off the radar for stardom for someone who moves the needle,

(37:15):
for someone we pay attention to, we don't talk about
him at all. He just can't stay on the court.
And you know, twenty four games played his rookie year
sixty one, twenty nine, seventy last year, but he had
a hurt when they need him the most, right at
the end of the year, and now he's at twenty
one games in counting for this year. He just can't
stay on the floor. And and we've gotten the point
where he should be somebody we talk about, like we

(37:37):
talked about Shaquille O'Neil. That's where we should he should
have be that kind of conversation guy. But we're not
because he can't stay on the floor. And this is
and this is nothing illustrates that more than just Hey,
if I told you, did he not play or triple
double I not play because he doesn't really play a lot.
And it's it's really that's a bad that that's a

(37:59):
thing for the NBA when they go, wow, he was
a superstar. We were counting on like they were counting
on him coming into the league and being the next
great superstar. When he came to the league, he was right, Hey,
let's see look at him run the floor, look at
what he does. The conversations we used to have about Zion,
but it's like he's gone the way of Ben Simmons.
We talked about Ben Simmons, solo Ben Simmons, Ben Simmons,
not Ben Simmons. Ben Simmons barely even in the league anymore.

(38:21):
And Zion Williams Clipper great, sorry, Clipper great. Ben Simmons
and Zion is the same point where it's yeah, okay,
yees yeah, oh triple do, that's great. But he's completely
lost that that status. And the NBA has missed out
on a number one overall pick that came in with
all the trimmings. You're you're the guy, You're you're gonna
be the guy that we push that pushes the league

(38:43):
forward the next ten years. And they missed on him
because he can't stay on the floor. He has fallen
to that level of a relevancy. You don't see no
one talks about him anymore. Debate shows, don't even get
like that's where Zion is right now. Yes, part of
it is he plays for New Orleans and Wolloms is
not very good, but it doesn't matter normally in the NBA.
You can be a star anywhere. Just watch this year
when SGA wins MVP in Oklahoma City. It's all I

(39:05):
guess you could really do that a couple of times,
so you could do that, Yes, it does, art would
it be a bigger deal of Zion was on the
Lakers or the Knicks or the Yeah. Absolutely, But it's
not like he's absolutely completely out of frame, out of mind.
He could still do it, but he just can't stay
on the floor enough. And that and that is that
is a really really tough thing. That's the reality. That's

(39:25):
a very difficult reality that just threw out there for Zion.

Speaker 3 (39:28):
Yeah, and that's the what however, I stim paid him
what was it super max? Not quite a super Max,
but a lot of money to stick around, right, you
get rid of brandon Ingram. He's off in Toronto. But
for Zion, when he's on the floor, I mean, he's
still ridiculously good and explosive in getting to the rim.
He's for his career averaging nearly twenty five points per game.

(39:52):
That's kind of where he is this year. Problem is
twenty one games played and he's on a nice streak
right now. Triple double tonight, So extole the virtues of it.
If he hadn't already signed that extension, he was a
name that he would have had a lot in trade rumors,
but nobody's taken on that contract like that. You want
to talk about finding a way to make money work

(40:14):
and who pays what they would have been one of
the greatest negotiation. We would have had a nine part
documentary of just going through his contract to make that
make sense. But you think about that twenty nine nineteen
draft class, Jahn Morant, right with the weapons and everything else.
They're playing really well in Memphis. You hearing about Jah Morant. Nope,
not really except for hey, I might be in the

(40:35):
dunk contest. All the other twenty nineteen guys that were
supposed to be stars have become Jags. Half of them
are playing on the bench for the Lakers.

Speaker 1 (40:45):
Amazing. Again, that's how far Zion has fallen. Luca Way,
do we tell you what Luca just did? Coming up next,
this may be his best highlight yet as a Laker.

Speaker 4 (40:58):
This is Fox Sports Radio.
