now after a big holiday holiday holiday holiday holiday, and
before we get to a couple of big stories in
(00:58):
an NBA, I want to say this is I thought
about this with We talked to Pete Futack a little
while ago on my flight back from Detroit to LA
on Wednesday night. We flew back on Tuesday night, New
Year's Eve. So we fly out of Michigan and we're
flying out the next to last flight out, and we
get on the plane and Pam just goes great.
Speaker 4 (01:21):
She's wearing a Michigan gear.
Speaker 1 (01:22):
The plane is filled with Ohio State, of course, flying
out for the Rose Bowl, right filled with Ohio State
fans flying out for the Rose bull. So they all
sit down saying walking by, No, it's everybody's nice. A
lot of people, I can't tell you. People said, oh
my god, it's the first time ever left I've ever
left Ohio Michigan.
Speaker 4 (01:41):
What what's a bike out there? Everything else?
Speaker 2 (01:43):
I'm like, oh, wow, did.
Speaker 5 (01:44):
You have any great tails or spin some yarns?
Speaker 4 (01:46):
And I said yes.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
Well, actually, what you need to do is everybody who
lives in Los Ange you need to give twenty dollars
to and if they're on the same plane as you,
it's forty dollars.
Speaker 5 (01:56):
There's an in and out right by the airport. It's
the busiest restaurant in the world.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
We're getting We're sitting on the plane and we're getting
ready to take off, and the pilot comes on. He says, hey, guys,
how you doing. You're ready to take off in a minute.
Uh excited, We'll get you in. It's gonna be a
four and a half hour flight. Blah blah blah, goayes
hey to. We had a lot of Ohio State fans
on the plane tonight. Uh hey, get I guess you're
all going out for the game. We'll do a little
bit of O h. And they go, I ow the
oh House, oh h, I own, I'm going how is
(02:22):
he doing? And somebody from the somebody from the front
of the plane goes, we're taking off from Michigan right like.
Speaker 5 (02:28):
He's doing right.
Speaker 4 (02:29):
And then and then somebody.
Speaker 1 (02:31):
In front like five rows up goes, Michigan still sucks.
Like everybody cheers and we wait, and I stop and
I and I just go just like this because I
knew and Pam will never divorce me after this, everybody,
I just go.
Speaker 6 (02:44):
You have Ryan Day And the whole plane goes, uh.
I'm like, yes, here of Michigan. I am here of Michigan.
Speaker 5 (02:55):
Anybody from the Michigan continued anybody uh an Tyron and
day by you that guy.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
Who was that guy?
Speaker 3 (03:02):
I like that guy, Let's talk to.
Speaker 4 (03:03):
Him right there.
Speaker 5 (03:03):
It seems like they could have gotten a drink or two,
maybe a sandwich.
Speaker 4 (03:09):
It was a debated going.
Speaker 5 (03:10):
It was a TV game though, right, I mean, obviously
down the road my brother had you know, mapped it
out talking about taking the public transportation because the Rose
Bull getting in and out. It's one of the main reasons,
like a lot of the events here in Los Angeles,
you want nothing to do with the travel to and
from a place. And then I more or less decided,
let's see, it's gonna cost me this and it's a
full day of my time, I'm not gonna go.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
And boy, based on that first half, who was the
winner yesterday?
Speaker 5 (03:36):
Sure, Buckeye fan, but this guy for now giving up
a lot of his dollars in time.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
Oh that was That was a great call by you
because and look and and all the the discussion of
course with the beginning of the game, and this is
what made me go, okay, none of you have obviously
been to a game, is all of the all? The
Rose Bowl just hits different, the Rose Bowl, the stadium,
the Rose Bull staying in the greatest stadium in the world.
All you see all this glow stuff about the roles,
and I'm like, okay, I will say this because I
(04:02):
firmly believe there's not a lot of perfection in sports,
because that's what sports. Sports is not about perfection. But
the field at the Rose Bowl is absolute perfection. It's
like Girdest Field. I could just sit there looking at
the field and not even watch the game. The colors,
the way it translates out, the shape that it is in,
(04:23):
it is beautiful. It is I mean, it is enrapturing.
It is the most beautiful football field that you will
ever see. You will never see anything better than that.
Now you get outside of that, and the Rose Bull's
got problems, man, but that you can't park, there's no
Wi Fi. There's one screen to see replays on. They
never show it. It's impossible to get food. I mean,
(04:45):
you go there, it's like, oh my god, it's like
nineteen seventy five. And I don't mean the band, I
mean the year. And while that can be charming in
some ways, Hey, I want to be able to see
a replay.
Speaker 4 (04:54):
I want to be able to know.
Speaker 1 (04:55):
I don't want to have to text you like it
did last But hey, why are they looking at this play?
Speaker 3 (05:00):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (05:01):
They won't show a replay. You're saying, oh, here's what's happening. Okay, great, thanks.
Speaker 5 (05:05):
Lost non show thread we ever had about something.
Speaker 4 (05:09):
Okay, why no one knows, they're not saying anything.
Speaker 5 (05:13):
It became the prophet for your your section.
Speaker 1 (05:18):
It is okay, they're looking at it because they say
it could be an interception, like, there's no The Rose
Bowl is an awful place to see it.
Speaker 4 (05:25):
It's a great the field is amazing and.
Speaker 5 (05:29):
Everything.
Speaker 1 (05:29):
Yeah, but you have a lot of great views at
different places. Now you've got a lot of great views.
The experience, the in game experience at the Rose Bowl is.
Speaker 5 (05:36):
Not great, but it's funny. Right, The field and the
game and all of that is fantastic to where it's
like a lot of vacations and trips. You make that
ten years later, it's like, boy, that was great. It's like, dude,
we fought the whole time. Yeah, it's like, yeah, but
remember we went here.
Speaker 1 (05:52):
We got to go see the hours to drive because
it's all residential streets pulling intobody. I mean this it's
it's it's not it's not great, man. You get to
the game, Like, Okay, it's worth it because you get
to the game. You get to see the game.
Speaker 5 (06:06):
You go to a u c L A game, you
get to bring in food.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
Well you see here you get to Yeah, I got
the coach.
Speaker 4 (06:11):
When I went to my UCLA game.
Speaker 5 (06:13):
You know, they finished pretty pretty well.
Speaker 4 (06:14):
I called a couple of double reverse passes. It was great.
Speaker 5 (06:17):
Down Lane Kiffin come and try to choke you out. Yeah,
Jason's pretending he's Kyle mccordy.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (06:22):
I threw a touchdown to Grimace.
Speaker 5 (06:23):
It was I'm so excited. Now, you know, Fran Brown
and everything going on with Syracuse football. But but yeah,
I mean, I in the end, I was, I was
glad I didn't go. Yeah, I mean, and then I
did my my cause benefit analysis of the relaxation that
I had. Now. I did a couple of shows. I
did my Sunday shows with Bucky and Andy and and
(06:43):
did the Mondays because you know, we were doing the
I Watch Your Flex podcast and all. But otherwise a
little bit of time off and not fighting traffic everywhere
pretty good.
Speaker 4 (06:54):
So it can be daunting.
Speaker 5 (06:55):
So not going back into that. And again, first world
problems where we live in Los Angeles, the weather great,
all of these things.
Speaker 4 (07:01):
I'm just saying.
Speaker 1 (07:02):
You hear all the over the top stuff about Yeah, okay,
the field is one thing, but the experienced day of
the game. That's another thing. That's the thing, Arvin. Why
is there a time out? They won't show anything? Why
is there? Okay, great, all right, here's what Here's what
my friend told me because he's watching on television. I
mean that that's what the experience is like that.
Speaker 5 (07:21):
I added value, though you really did add a lot
of value last year.
Speaker 1 (07:25):
Speaking of adding value, Jimmy Butler looks like he's gonna
be adding value to another team in the NBA.
Speaker 4 (07:31):
Well put very soon.
Speaker 1 (07:33):
The Heat lost tonight and it was look, the Heat
have had an okay season there, meandering around five front
a number sixteen. Yeah, no, no, it's but it's not
been great. And Jimmy Butler's general unhappiness with the Miami
Heat has been known. It's been a month since reports
came out that hey, he wants to be dupe humps.
All right, well, you know, Jimmy Butler's want to be
(07:53):
traded before it's worked out. Yes, I'm sure Eric Spoltzer's like, yes,
another day, Jimmy wants to be traded. Okay, but apparently
now Jimmy Butler, he really wants to be traded. And
I am sure he is going to get his wish
after he said this following the loss tonight that they
had where he scored nine points in a one twenty eight,
one fifteen defeat to the Indiana Pacers.
Speaker 7 (08:14):
I want to see me get my joy back from
playing basketball. Whoever that may be, we'll find out here
pretty soon.
Speaker 3 (08:21):
But I want to get my joy back.
Speaker 7 (08:22):
I'm happy here off the court, but I want to
be back to somewhere dominant. I want to hope, and
I want to help this team win. Right now, I'm
not doing it.
Speaker 3 (08:30):
Can you get your joy back here on the court?
Speaker 7 (08:32):
Probably not?
Speaker 1 (08:34):
Okay, So Jimmy Butler's agent, Oh Sham's an apology?
Speaker 5 (08:36):
Yeah, Well, Sham's had that report about a month ago,
and his agent was clapping back everywhere and any venue
he possibly could get hold of.
Speaker 1 (08:44):
I'm happy here off the court. Wait what Yeah, I'm happier.
I'm happy in a relationship most of the time. Wait
what yet not some of the time. You kind of
pissed me off and I after this, This is cut
from the James Harden strategy of let me nape the
bridges that are built between me and my team so
I don't have to play there again. And this is
(09:06):
Jimmy Butler saying okay, no, I mean it. I want out.
I don't think you can play him again, not after this.
I'm I don't have any joy playing here. Then guess
what you're not gonna play? I can't see. I know
pat Riley is gonna say, oh, this is a this
is a bit of a spitting contest with me and
Jimmy Butler. But this goes past the rubicon. You say
you're not happy, you can't get your joy back. He's
(09:27):
not gonna play for the Heat again, and they will
move on. They know, at thirty five years old, Jimmy
Butler is done being someone who can carry them to
an Eastern Conference final. They're not gonna get a lot
for him, but still they will move on. They'll readjust
his minutes, they'll spend in free agency. Someone else will
come in. So this is it, and he will sit
until he is traded. He had four teams on his
(09:48):
list a few weeks ago, including the Warriors. I'm sure
they'll be interested. The Rockets might be interested, The Mavericks
might be interested. These are all teams, the Suns all
on his list. It could be contenders. So I don't
see him playing again again until he gets traded. Now
that being said, we have seen players, whether it is
Crmelo Anthony, whether it's James Harden, who have looked like
(10:11):
they were absolutely done because their joy of the game
is gone. They didn't care for whatever reason, they weren't
enthused with giving their all wherever they were playing. And
then you've seen a change of venue and suddenly, bam,
look how happy I am. Right, Look how happy James
Harden is now playing with the clip? What look at
James Harden playing? So I didn't think that was gonna happen.
(10:31):
But Jimmy Butler is also that kind of guy. Now,
he's not as dynamic as as Harden is still, but
he's someone who at thirty five can still be a scorer.
He has still been a leader. There's been times he
hasn't been a leader. But if he goes to a
team that needs toughness, needs a little bit of an identity,
needs a little bit of a guy that can hold
people accountable, because that's what Butler has done. He's not
a smooth ride. He's not someone coming in going hey,
(10:52):
the leadership skills. It's gonna be a little bit of leadership,
little bit of rockiness. But he can be a great
fit for the right team that needs that kind of
energy and accountability that Jimmy Butler brings. Doesn't need to
be the number one scorer on the team, needs to
be an option, needs to be someone that can play
off of the good players on the team already, but
he can be a great fit for contender who needs
(11:14):
that brand of talent and leadership and lightning in a
bottle that Jimmy Butler's got to be.
Speaker 5 (11:21):
Fun to see him with the Suns, right because Kevin Durant,
while he does a lot of interviews and social media
and all, has always been regarded as kind of like
quiet leadership, not really a loud guy in the locker room.
Jimmy Butler could fill that space for you there in Phoenix.
Neive me that guy for it. We've seen him with
young players and they respond either well or terribly. We
(11:42):
watched it in Chicago. Young players did not respond well.
We saw it in Philadelphia. Tough love was not what
Joe el Embiid and other people wanted to hear. Now
more reports coming back to the genesis of the or
exacerbation I guess of the pat Riley Jimmy Butler stuff
that it goes all the way back to their exit
(12:02):
in the playoffs last year. He did a media back
and forth and basically pat Riley saying, if you didn't
play your job. So that's kind of swirling in the
background of this. But you know, we see it in
all walks of life. New job, a move, new relationship,
getting out of a bad one, all of those things
(12:23):
can be the the boost you need to propel you forward.
For Jimmy Butler, obviously, this relationship between he and Spoe
and and pat Riley has run its course regardless of
what's going on. Like you said, you know, business could
be booming and everything could be great. And in this
personal personal life and off the court, big head Coffee,
big face Coffee. I keep calling big Head big Coffee.
Speaker 4 (12:46):
You and big head coffe.
Speaker 5 (12:47):
Yeah we should do that. Yeah, but my hats don't
fit as well either. I need to grow my hair
back out, so you know, you get that, you know,
full swollen dome effect back. But for Jimmy Butler, yeah,
there's still some bad basketball to be had from him.
Wouldn't be surprised to see both the LA teams kick
the tires as well, telling you.
Speaker 1 (13:06):
Man, it's it's a it's a Jimmy Butler situation where
you're gonna see a lot of teams interested and he's
gonna wind up going somewhere, and it's gonna be the
right Lakers.
Speaker 4 (13:15):
And I could be the Lakers.
Speaker 1 (13:16):
Man.
Speaker 5 (13:17):
He has one right so you don't even have to
buy in long term.
Speaker 4 (13:20):
You're not gonna get a lot. You're not gonna get
a lot for him. You're the heat.
Speaker 1 (13:23):
But at this point it's okay, we just have to
move on from him, and you realize you're not giving
up Jimmy Butler of three years ago. You know, you're
giving up a thirty five year old Jimmy Butler who
who knows what he has left, but for a team
short term for yeah, he's already made it longer in Miami.
Ever thought he'd make it. I mean, he was at
the point where, okays of Minnesota, Okay, that's great. But
then a couple of years the next stop, one year
(13:45):
in in Philadelphia. Okay, he's been there six years, they've
gotten to the NBA Final. They got to the NBA
Finals after he wanted to fight Eric Spolstra in the
middle of a game, Like, I mean, he's got that
that vol his vol volatility, volatility, volatility, volatility. Uh, the
brand of leadership, it works right. We've heard stories about
his crazy practices where he makes teammates bend to his
(14:09):
will and understand. Guy.
Speaker 4 (14:11):
Yeah, hey, MVP, Big Bodega.
Speaker 1 (14:14):
Uh say defense he can be.
Speaker 3 (14:17):
He can be.
Speaker 1 (14:17):
Just ask the TA walls if they miss Big Bodega. Uh,
he can be that guy. He can be a big
piece to somebody's puzzle for the end.
Speaker 4 (14:24):
He will be soon. I got to think in the
next week it's gonna happen.
Speaker 5 (14:28):
The Tea Wolves are still missing Googly outa Garnett and
mar Berry missing.
Speaker 1 (14:32):
They're missing googs Many Exit out Vya Fresca Exit, swalling down.
The Jason Smith Show with Mike Carbon Live the tirec
dot Com Studios. So yeah, get ready, Jimmy Bucket's coming
to a theater near you and he'll be good.
Speaker 4 (14:45):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (14:46):
Coming up next, who's now the overwhelming favorite to win
the College Football Championship? What about the MVP in the NFL?
What do we see big action coming up in the
NFL this weekend. We had to Vegas and get all
the early thoughts on all the big games coming up.
That's next, Jason to Mike, Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (15:05):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 4 (15:18):
Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (15:20):
It is The Jason Smith Show with my best friend
Mike Harmon, live from Thetirack dot Com studios.
Speaker 4 (15:28):
No tra dame in the college football Final Four.
Speaker 5 (15:33):
I like that.
Speaker 1 (15:33):
Pete picked up on that, no tre dame, No tre dame.
You know, it's funny because Beno Cookie st to always
say that to me, goes, Jason, You're the only other
person I've talked to that says no tre dame.
Speaker 5 (15:43):
I go, I just always said it that we go
say to him, that's the way we say it.
Speaker 4 (15:47):
That's the way it's supposed to be said.
Speaker 1 (15:49):
Like, Okay, great, thanks, No tradame, No today, No today
wins it again.
Speaker 4 (15:54):
They head to the Final four, and now.
Speaker 5 (15:58):
What is next?
Speaker 1 (16:00):
Who is now the overwhelming favorite to win the college
football National Championship or to land Jimmy Butler. Yeah, Buckets,
there's one person we can ask that and other questions too.
He's a former rods maker at Caesar's, current hosts of
About the Board podcast.
Speaker 4 (16:17):
You see him on CBS.
Speaker 1 (16:19):
He is Vegas inside a long time front of the
show Todd Furman, Todd, what's happening?
Speaker 4 (16:23):
But how are you?
Speaker 5 (16:24):
Man?
Speaker 4 (16:24):
Happy New Year?
Speaker 1 (16:25):
Thank you?
Speaker 8 (16:25):
Same to you guys, and I want it knowing, gentlemen,
I don't talk to the NBA until we get to April,
when the players start to care, the fans start to care,
and I can find my joy on the court all
over again.
Speaker 4 (16:35):
Well, do you really okay?
Speaker 1 (16:37):
I don't think Vegas would be the money making machine
it is if you only had to find joy into
two six accept bets. I think you have to be
a little bit more clinical in how things operate there.
Speaker 8 (16:48):
That's a very good point. We put numbers on college
football games, we put numbers on the NFL, and we
leave the regular season NBA stuff to the degenerates and
wait as long as possible to hang numbers most nights
before people want to get out of bed and who
actually may or may not be on the court for
a game like Portland against the Lakers now being watched
by twelve people outside of Staples Center.
Speaker 1 (17:07):
Hey, Hey, there's come on, we're all watching this.
Speaker 4 (17:11):
That's good.
Speaker 8 (17:12):
There's nothing else really going on. If you guys were smarter,
you'd be tuned into a little NHL hockey instead. Vancouver
Seattle much more fascinating with about eight minutes to go
than what you're seeing in the Association.
Speaker 1 (17:21):
I know it was fun watching the Sixers get boat
raced by fifty. That was kind of fun too. So
as we sit here tonight, Todd final four of the
college football playoff pole is set, A playoff is set.
How overwhelming a favorite is Ohio State at this point?
Speaker 8 (17:36):
Well, I wouldn't say overwhelming, but they are close to
being an odds on favorite, a shade better than even
money depending on where you shop. And then you look
at the logjam of the next three teams behind them,
Notre Dame, Texas and Penn State. You can pick your
poison with any of those trio basically all priced between
seven to two, and that three and a half to
one range upwards of nine to two. Ohio State finally
playing at their potential, We've seen them put together one
(17:58):
hundred and twenty minutes to solid football, ready to postseason
with dominant performances against Tennessee and against the Oregon and
of course bookmakers are forced to adjust accordingly, and it's
why Ohio State is laying such a large number for
their semi final game a week from tonight, we'll take
on Texas and what will amount to a de facto
long Longhorns home game being played at the Cotton.
Speaker 9 (18:17):
Bowl in Arlington.
Speaker 5 (18:18):
Todd, what kind of odds what I've gotten for laying
just betting the money line for all the teams that
received to buy to bounce early.
Speaker 8 (18:27):
It wouldn't have provided nearly the same upside. It would
have been a lot less lucrative than some of the
best bets that Smith likes to come up with throughout
the course of our iolhau on a regular basis, When
you consider that two of those teams that won out
right were of course double digit favorite Texas needing to
go to overtime, and then shorter numbers, with Ohio State
just a modest two and a half point favorite and
Notre Dame closing a short favorite as well as they
(18:49):
took money, ending up as a one and a half
point shock, a far cry from where that number opened
with Georgia minus one minus one and a half.
Speaker 1 (18:57):
All right, Todd as we get outside of college football
and get to the NFL this weekend, we got a
lot of big action going on.
Speaker 4 (19:04):
I know you got the new bet the Board podcast up.
Speaker 1 (19:07):
Look, we're talking more about playoff seating than we are
anything else this weekend. Obviously, the big game is the
Lions and the Vikings. You're talking about a one seed
versus a five seed. What do you like in this one?
Speaker 8 (19:19):
I think it's a fascinating game because Detroit hasn't exactly
shown an ability to provide much in the way resistance
as their defense continues to get banged up, but their
offense remains the most explosive in the league, and so
Ken Detroit continue to outscore their problems. Minnesota defensively going
to provide a little bit of a challenge there. And
I think when you look at the number here on
a game like this, there's a reason that Detroit seeing
(19:40):
two a action. When the number gets down to two
and a half, the Lions are taking money from professional betters,
and when the number toggles back to three, you're starting
to see a little bit more of an appetite on
the Minnesota Vikings. What's interesting about this game as well
in addition to the side, it's the largest total that
we have seen on a regular season game all season.
It'll come in Game two seventy two. This number got
it high is fifty eight and a half on Monday
(20:02):
night in the waning moments of the Lions forty nine
Ers game, and then when most of the shops reopened
on Tuesday morning, you saw the number kick back down,
starting to see a little bit of resistance in that
fifty six and a half range headed towards fifty five
and a half. And I'll make the case guys that
I think the Lions need this game like blood. Not
because they're you know, incapable of going on the road
to knock off the Rams where they'd be a short
(20:22):
favorite as a five seeds, but they just look like
a team running on fumes. So I think this is
almost a de facto must win for a Lions team
who could see their seed, their season, you know, come
to a screeching halt against the pesky Rams side in
a little bit more than a week. If they're not
able to hold serve at home.
Speaker 5 (20:37):
How difficult is it to handicap a week eighteen with
motivations at play, and you know, star players who may
do the old Peyton Man and Queen's wave.
Speaker 8 (20:46):
It looks a lot more like NFL preseason co quite frankly,
more than anything else, trying to figure out who may
or may not be available, Which coaches want to play
their players for a series or two, will play them
deep into the third and fourth quarter, especially for those
teams that already know what their postseason prospects look like.
And it's part of the reason that these numbers are
a little bit more volatile than what you'll see during
the course of the regular season. A perfect illustration the
(21:08):
Rams opening at a pick them against the Seahawks. The
Rams announce that they're not going to play Matthew Stafford,
and I'm sure a number of other key contributors will
be sidelined as well, knowing Sean mcvayh doesn't like to
put any of his key guys in harm's way, and
it's part of why Seattle now out to nearly a
full touchdown fever. But once that number touches seven, inevitably
you'll start to see a little bit of buyback there.
And the Houston Texans on the road against the Tennessee
(21:31):
Titans in Nashville, that game is kind of ping ponged
all over the place, got its highest Tennessee as much
as a six point favorite, came back to pick them
and started to see the Titans take a little bit
of money earlier today Washington saying that they're going to
play their guys as balloon this price from three upwards
of six and a half. And it's a question of
which teams that are going to be golfing in about
seventy two hours. You feel comfortable backing and do the
(21:54):
Jets finally show some fight outside of fighting well that
they do on social media.
Speaker 1 (21:58):
Hey, hey, I'll tell you this. Jets are gonna win
on Sunday. Trust me, Jets are gonna win on to
hot He says that every Sunday, look Miami Norton coming
in with Tyler Huntley. Aaron Rodgers knows this could be
the final game of his career. It was easy to
mail it in against the Bills. Now final game. They
can knock the Dolphins out. Rogers knows this could be it.
(22:18):
Jets will win. It's a typical Jets thing to do
to win on Sunday. And suddenly, hey, we're picking now
twelve instead of picking in the top seven.
Speaker 4 (22:25):
That's a Jets normally, I'd.
Speaker 8 (22:26):
Love to argue with you, but I think it's definitely
Jets are passing this particular spot. But I just find
it fascinating that a quarterback who's won a Super Bowl
with one of the most prestigious organizations in the entire
NFL said that he's never had more fun than playing
a little more than a season with the New York
Jets with the costs on the cusp of going four
and thirteen and tearing his achilles in his opening series.
So the judgment in the locker room not much everything
(22:48):
the judgment in the front office. And maybe it's another
dozen years before the Jets final way to get back
and play meaningful postseason football.
Speaker 1 (22:54):
Well, it just it'd be how many more years till
we get Jordan Love. We got Brett fav at the
very end. Look at Jordan Loves seven eight years. Then
when he's done, it'll be fine.
Speaker 8 (23:03):
You know, I think there's a better chance you guys
end up with Malik Willis sooner rather than later, so
you can pencil him in as the next great Jets
franchise quarterback.
Speaker 5 (23:12):
Wow, we got the Jets in and obviously sure, running
through the joke of the Jimmy Butler stuff trade deadline,
how much does that impact, you know, how the where
money's flowing or the expectations any of these rumors spark
anything in Vegas.
Speaker 8 (23:29):
You know, it doesn't really move a whole heck of
a lot. I mean, it sounds cliche to say, and
I say it half jokingly, but there's a little bit
of seriousness in it. NBA future odds really don't move
a ton because unless the team truly comes from off
the pace, there's no reason to adjust. So the main
thing that we have seen so far this season is
odds on the Knicks kind of lengths in a little
bit from seven and a half to one, where they
open the season out to ten the seventy six ers.
(23:51):
Of course, as they continue to flounder, their number has
really drifted out to thirty five to one. And while
you've seen the favorites and both the Eastern and Western
Conference numbers get a little bit short, Celtics now in
prohibitive favorite territory right around two to one in the
Oklahoma City thunder riding He's thirteen game winning streak have
seen their odds before the year that we're about six
and a half seven to one, kind of get sliced
in half as we see them at three and a half.
(24:12):
But other than that, not much in the way of change. Cleveland,
of course, has come down as well amid that tourds
start to the season, although I'm not sure that's something
that's going to be repeatable when you get into a
postseason format.
Speaker 1 (24:23):
All right, todd Lastly, even money Big Bodega NBA MVP
right now, like how much like are you even taking
bets on Carl Anthony Towns now considering he's going to win?
Speaker 8 (24:34):
You know, as I pull up some of the more
prominent sports books and I have to scroll down, you
can get Carl Anthony Towns at the bargain basement price
right now of one hundred and twenty to one. But
the craziest part about all this is one hundred and
twenty to one for his odds actually make him the
sixth favorite on the board, behind Sga, Nicola Jokch Giannis,
Jason Tatum, Victor Wembinyamu, who checks in at about a
buck ten to one, and then Karl Anthony town So
(24:56):
little to say, gentlemen, this odds market not nearly as
competitive as what you see in the NFL week in
week out, where those prices are extremely volatile. This appears
to truly be a three horse and I'll say a
two horse race between Nicole Joke and Shay Gill just Alexander.
It would just be nice if we could finally find
a way for an American to be the best basketball
player in the NBA. Maybe it'll happen in the next
(25:18):
five to seven years, all.
Speaker 4 (25:19):
Right, maybe Brownie James will get in. You never know.
Speaker 2 (25:22):
Well, I don't think.
Speaker 8 (25:22):
I don't think you can bet on the G League
via the available for that.
Speaker 1 (25:26):
Wait a minute, are you actually telling me there's something
you can't bet on in Vegas?
Speaker 2 (25:30):
Really, there are a number of different things.
Speaker 4 (25:32):
But if you would like to pluck down, you know, a.
Speaker 8 (25:34):
Future investment in terms of who you think will draft
Duke's talented freshman Cooper Flag, you can get a robust
price of a right around five and a half to
want to both the Pelicans in Washington Wizards, and maybe
if you believe he ends up in Utah. I had
the nice price of six to one. Should you want
to tie up your money needlessly for the next six
months or so he's.
Speaker 1 (25:52):
On Twitter at Todd Furman. That is at Todd Furman.

Speaker 3 (27:10):

Speaker 9 (27:12):

us here Lebroight.
Speaker 1 (27:15):
When it's the only game on more people are watching
it with only one game left.
Speaker 9 (27:19):
I agree, especially too, It's January, tewod, what else are
you doing? Lebron with thirty one points, seven assists in
that matchup Earth Elsewhere in the NBA results, the Pacers
beat the Heat one twenty eight to one fifteen, Jimmy
Butler saying after the game he wants to find his
joy and I'll find it basically anywhere but Miami, reiterating
that trade request or demand, or however you'd like to
(27:41):
say it.
Speaker 3 (27:42):
Celtics one eighteen, Timberwls one fifteen.
Speaker 9 (27:44):
Jayson Tatum with thirty three points, eight rebounds, nine assists

twenty nine points, eight assists, and the Warriors pounded the

Steph Curry with thirty points and ten assists. You want
to beat. Twenty eight and fourteen college football results. Notre
Dame beat Georgia in the rescheduled Sugar Bowl. Notre Dame
advance twenty three to ten the final score. Notre Dame
advances to the Orange Bowl, where they'll play Penn State
(28:27):
in the semi final by the College Football Playoff. All
Miss beat Duke fifty two to twenty in the Gator Bowl.
Jackson Dart with four touchdown passes and what will likely
be his last college football game.
Speaker 4 (28:38):
I don't know, Lane Kiffin said, maybe no file a waiver.
Speaker 3 (28:41):
Hey, waivers are flying all over everybody's.
Speaker 1 (28:43):
Coming back, man, No one's going to the NFL. All
three quarterback is coming back.
Speaker 5 (28:47):
All that said was and he had a sign over
his head and saying nil collective, let's go.
Speaker 2 (28:53):
Let's go.
Speaker 9 (28:54):
If you can get six million for Quinn viewers, Jackson
Darts got to the demand a pretty high price, Jaylen
Miller not demanding that price. He's gonna go try his
luck in the major leagues here. Going to the twenty
twenty five NFL Draft. Leaving Alabama, the Jets interviewed Lewis Riddick.
Speaker 3 (29:09):
For the general manager job.
Speaker 9 (29:11):
They also completed an interview with Ron Rivera for the
head coaching job. Charges Ward receiever labmcconkie returned to practice
after a bad toe injury. The Browns will start Bailey's
Appy at quarterback against the Ravens on Saturday, the fortieth
different starting quarterback for the Browns since nineteen ninety nine.
Speaker 4 (29:27):
Since this season.
Speaker 3 (29:29):
This is gonna be what five was five last year?
Speaker 1 (29:32):
Four?
Speaker 5 (29:33):
This year? Right?
Speaker 4 (29:33):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (29:34):
Wait?
Speaker 1 (29:34):
Who is that more? Who will start more? The Browns
quarterbacks or the Jets kickers? Old stuff one right there, man,
that's tough.
Speaker 9 (29:40):
If you did Jets quarterbacks plus kickers, just buy a mine.
Bengals list running back Chase Brown and wide receiver T
Higgins is questionable for Saturday's game against the Steelers. Anthony
Richardson misspracticed with back and foot injuries, the actor.
Speaker 3 (29:56):
Acting like a quarterback at least.
Speaker 9 (29:58):
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is limited with an ankle injury.
Speaker 3 (30:01):
Jalen Hurts. I'm sorry, I misspoke.
Speaker 9 (30:04):

that as Kenny Pickett is dealing with injured ribs. Josh
Allen starting quarterback for the AFC and the Pro Bowl.
Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow, the two backups Jade and Ivy,
will be re evaluated after surgery to a pair of
his fractured fibula. Of the Pistons guard will miss likely

Year per Sports Illustrated.
Speaker 3 (30:30):
Jason and Mike, you two are my sports people.
Speaker 1 (30:32):
Of the Oh.
Speaker 4 (30:33):
Thank you. M dob. I appreciate that you got it.
Speaker 1 (30:35):
Bud Sell, just really quick, you know, we had some
fun with Todd Fern about the NBA MVP just for
a second. Okay, you see the Knicks. I mean, yes,
you can only play who's on the schedule, and then
the Knicks are killing everybody, right, Yeah, Karl Anthony Towns
has been phenomenal. Right, but let's but let's forget about
the Knicks for a second. Yeah, the Tea Wolves made
(30:57):
this trade in the off seat. Okay, we're going to
be better. And here they are now lounging around five hundred.
Do you do you need more of an argument about
about MVP right now than hey, here are the Knicks
winning big with him, and here's his former team that
can't find their way out when they were supposed to
be at the top of the Western Conference and they're
sitting around five hundred.
Speaker 4 (31:19):
It's a big deal.
Speaker 7 (31:19):
Man.
Speaker 1 (31:20):
When you'd say, I've seen the evidence of one player
being taken away from a team, and I have seen
the evidence about him being added to another team, I
don't know that I need any more than that.
Speaker 5 (31:29):
Nicks were a fifty win team last year.
Speaker 1 (31:31):
They'll win seventy. We may not lose again, knock knock.
What we may lose again, you can go, We'll go
seventy to and ten, seventy to and ten. Here we
go seventy two and ten.
Speaker 5 (31:41):
Gonna match the Bulls because we're the other team that
tried to mad match and beat.
Speaker 4 (31:45):
Them then lost in the finals Groth.
Speaker 5 (31:48):
So that Warriors year was fantastic and it didn't you know,
stick the landing.
Speaker 1 (31:54):
I feel better now that you know more guys are
playing off the bench. It's not just you know, the
knicks are just playing there and.
Speaker 5 (31:59):
Didn't even like I'm started Biles throw back there sticking
the landing.
Speaker 4 (32:02):
No, that's pretty good.
Speaker 5 (32:03):
It was pretty No, but extending the bench. Finally realize
it's good. Yes, a long season. Yeah, how many guys
went to him and knocked on the door, And like coach,
we got start playing prize man, we got campaign needs to.
Speaker 2 (32:17):

Radio The Jason Smith Show with My best Friend Mike
Harmon True livem The Tire Studios. Congratulations to note Tre
Dame moving on to the final four in college football playoffs.
They outlast hold down Georgia twenty three to ten, and look,
(33:14):
Notre Dame's a really good team.
Speaker 4 (33:16):
Their defense has played really well. But I'll tell you what.
Speaker 1 (33:19):
If I'm Georgia, I'm Kirby Smart, and I know that
he has come out full throated in defending his aggressive
play today. When it comes down to it, he's gonna
be laying in bed tonight looking up at the ceiling
going why did why did I go for points at
the end of the first half?
Speaker 4 (33:35):
Why did I go for points?
Speaker 1 (33:36):
And it's gonna be a question he asked himself, and
Georgia fans are gonna ask themselves forever because that decision
cost them the game. And this is not to be
Monday Morning Quarterback, where Hey, a decision backfired on you.
This game is a defensive struggle. Right now, Stockland's playing
better than I thought he was gonna play. Georgia dropped
a lot of passes, right we know they drop passes.
Speaker 5 (33:58):
They had the big drive right after the early puns.
You had a big drive at a fumble in the
red zone, and then you had this sixty seven yard
pass completion. Unfortunately the referee got into it and entangled
with a guy on the sideline, meaning it's now first
and ten from the twenty six, and you had to
settle for a field goal. So you'd had opportunities to
(34:18):
move the ball later on when you actually did you know,
the five play fifty five yard drive. So aggressiveness, I'm
usually I'm usually fully in favor of it, but I'm
kind of with you of this in this spot, thirty
some odds seconds left. Now you are given notre dame
the ball back to start the second half. Yeah, but
this is one where maybe you couch it.
Speaker 1 (34:39):
And this is where a coach needs to understand the
flow of the game and where it's at and not
make an emotional decision. Because, like I said, Stockton was
playing pretty well. Georgia was dropping passes, but by and
large they couldn't get anything going against Notre Dame's defense.
So with thirty seconds ago in the first half, to
get the ball back after being down a field goal.
(35:00):
I get the philosophy of, hey, let's try to get
down there and kick a field goal and tie the
game before halftime. But you've had so much trouble moving
the football. This has not been an offensive aerial explosion
where hey, if it's twenty four to twenty one, yeah,
try to kick that field goal. Because you've been moving
up and down the field pretty well. Your offense has
it going on.
Speaker 5 (35:18):
Well, even the quick strike, right, because the one possession
that ended in the fumble was a seven minute drive, long, slow,
protracted march.
Speaker 1 (35:27):
Understand that the flow of the game, you've been having
trouble moving the ball, both defenses are playing really well.
There's thirty seconds left. There is a bigger chance of
disaster happening than you getting fifty yards down the field
in thirty seconds or a little bit less than thirty seconds,
because you need time for the field goal to try
a field goal to make it six to six. Sometimes
(35:49):
you just have to get to halftime, not the getting
to halftime and suddenly, hey, we make the halftime adjustments
and we go No. But just sometimes for athletes and teams, hey,
the chance take a breath to sit back, says what happened?
Figure things out? That bodes well for lots of teams.
You just need that time. Get to halftime. You hear
that all the time. Get to half time. Kirby Smart
(36:09):
needed to get to halftime, and instead he made a
really risky, bad decision by trying to throw the football.
What happens, Stockton gets sacked, he fumbles, Notre Dame recovers.
The next play is a touchdown pass for Riley Leonard,
and it's thirteen to three and the game is over
because at that point I knew ten points is going
to be too much for Georgia to overcome in the
(36:29):
second half, because you know, Notre Dame's gonna score again
a little bit, and this offense has not been doing it.
This is not one of those games where it suddenly
at halftime, hey, everything opens up in the second half.
And no, this was again both offenses were struggling. Neither
offense had a great day. Notre Dame had the turnover
and they had the kick return for a touchdown. Offensively,
they were doing nothing. Neither team was doing anything. It's
(36:50):
six ' three. Keep the game at six three, going
to halftime, and the entire second half the game is
there for you. But the potential for disaster should It's
got to outweigh the risk. We can get down the
field for points. Again, if you were getting down the
field and scoring, I would say, okay, if you had
twenty one points, twenty four points, or you know, three
(37:11):
hundred yards of offense, yeah, do it because you're moving
the ball well. But you weren't and you were having
trouble and this decision, that play, that was the game.
That strip sack was the game. And Georgia is going
home because of that. If they go to halftime six
to three, okay, maybe Notre Dame runs the kick all
being killerback, but you score again, you make it thirteen ten.
(37:32):
It's a field goal game. Things can be a little different.
You gave them the cushion, which which they were able
to play the rest of the game with. That was
the biggest play, and George's going home because of that play.
Speaker 5 (37:41):
Well, and you come back out of that the halftime
at whatever adjustment you made didn't matter. Because you give
up the opening kickoff for a touchdown. I mean three
phases of the game, and we watched Notre Dame a
little gamesmanship and a little creativity along the way, but
you know the decision to to go for it there
and again you know, normally I'm the aggressive guy. I've
(38:03):
defended Dan Campbell un John Blue in the face. You
got to execute, and if you're gonna be aggressive, Okay,
this is where recognize you're gonna feel heat, because we'd
seen that from the opening possession right when they're running
into the punter right and to where they're they're gonna
come after it and they're not gonna back off and
suddenly slump into his own to allow you to hit
(38:25):
an underneath play and Georgia had it. It's opportunities, right.
You talk about the drops. A couple of those were
on pretty pretty good throws from Stockton downfield right to
where you could have changed field position. But here with
college kickers, I'm trusting even if I moved the ball
fifty yards because they were starting from what the fifteen
or what I mean, they were backed up pretty far.
(38:47):
It's not going to be an easy run. And then
you're trusting a guy with a fifty plus yard field goal,
like I joked about it earlier in the show. You know,
blanken Ship once upon a time, the man with the
goggles that we love so much much, he wasn't coming
back through the doors to kick. So everything's a risky
proposition at the collegiate level trying to go for field goals.
So you're talking about a fifty or sixty yard possession
(39:10):
in thirty seconds. Again, you needed seven minutes plus to
do that earlier in the half.
Speaker 1 (39:16):
And you know, and the thing is this is you
bring up Dan Campbell and Kirby Smart very similar in hey,
we're aggressive, this is what we do. Okay, I understand that,
But going for it on fourth down being aggressive here,
it's not about hey, we always do this, it's our identity.
It's about making that risky call when you have a
pretty good idea that the odds are going to be
(39:38):
in your favor. You can't just do it because you
always do it, because you want to make sure you're
making that decision when you have the best chance to succeed, right,
going for it on fourths and seven from the forty five, uh,
trying to get down the field for this. Is it
worth that risk? No, that risk was not. And that's
where Kirby smart needed to be. Wait for it, wait
for it, wait for it smarter. Ah boy, you like
(40:01):
that at TJ clearly not smart enough on that play.
Speaker 4 (40:06):
He needed to get smart.
Speaker 1 (40:08):
At the end of that play and instead brought chaos
to the Bulldog. I really thought you were gonna do
something with Kirby instead. We'll get to two big college
football stories coming up Nextbox
