guys night Jason Smith and his best friend Mike Carmon.
They'll be back tomorrow night, of course, to finish out
the week. By the way, Flanke, I think it looks
like I will take off one Sunday in December to
go to Costa Rica. How about that? My friend?
Speaker 4 (01:06):
There'ssinos there really yep.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
And it's free too, free hotel, free travel, free food,
and free booze. How about that?
Speaker 4 (01:16):
How'd you pull that off?
Speaker 3 (01:17):
My wife made President's Club, so they congratulations. They take
her and her spouse, or she could take her sister
and we're gonna go from Saturday to Friday. And it's
a it's a real swanky, real expensive, like four star,
five star resort too.
Speaker 5 (01:35):
Look at you, look at you? Well, congratulations. How could
we never get benefit? Well, I guess we kind of
do get benefits like that.
Speaker 4 (01:41):
In radio. We get to go cover sports.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
Good morning, guys, and Dan Patrick are in Dublin. They're
in Ireland for the for the Notre Dame game.
Speaker 5 (01:51):
Well that's ridiculous. I mean, no, I'm just kidding. Notre
Dame and navy's a big deal. I didn't realize that. Navy,
we basically are Notre Dame credits Navy with keeping its
football program alive.
Speaker 4 (02:05):
Did you know that?
Speaker 3 (02:06):
No, I did not know that.
Speaker 5 (02:07):
Yeah, basically, Navy had made it possible for Notre Dame
to have a team. Now we're going we're not going
back to anytime soon. We're going back to like World
War two days. But yeah, so that's why Navy and
Notre Dame play every year. That's pretty cool. Do you
get this since Arnie Spanier, that we are trying to
expand college football more overseas or because we've done this
(02:31):
I think four or five years in a row with
the game in Ireland, is it trying to do more
like the NBA or excuse me, the NFL and playing
more games in Germany and England or No, you just
feel like these might be a couple one or two
offs that.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
No. I think we're trying that we're getting more and
more games outside the United States, so obviously you want
to try to go at globally. NBA obviously what they're
trying to do over in China, and you know, as
you said, the NBA, what they're doing in London, in
Germany and stuff like that. So yeah, I believe. Have
you not never been any place crazy with all your
(03:04):
travels of doing play by play?
Speaker 4 (03:06):
Yeah, I've been to Stillwater. It's a crazy place.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
There you go go.
Speaker 5 (03:11):
I love Stillwater. I would probably say the craziest. No,
I've just been a cool I mean honestly cool places
I've been to, you know, the Rose Bowl, we've covered
games in at Atlanta Mercedespin Stadium. We I've never been
in a pro football statem. Well, I guess Miami for
where the Orange Bowl is. But yeah, I mean we
just there hasn't been anything overseas or anything too gimmicky
(03:34):
with these overseas games or neutral sight games. So yeah,
it's uh. I'm intrigued to see if it continues to grow.
You know, in the eighties, when you know Artie likes
to have most of his references.
Speaker 3 (03:45):
When you took what t w A or pan am
and you got to smoke inside the airplane house.
Speaker 5 (03:50):
Most seats right there and no one could say anything
to you about it.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
It was nice and wide too road seats.
Speaker 5 (03:57):
But they used to play a game every year, and
Nebraska played a game there Oklahoma State. In fact, Barry
Sanders got his Heisman Trophy while he was playing.
Speaker 4 (04:07):
In the Tokyo Bowl.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
Oh I didn't know that.
Speaker 5 (04:08):
Yeah, So I don't know what our path is for
college football. I feel like we're just fine keeping it
in the States. Don't know if you have to grow
with that much. But I do find it interesting that
it's been consistent now over the last decade that we've
been seeing games played overseas.
Speaker 4 (04:23):
And it is expensive.
Speaker 5 (04:25):
So first of all, kudos to the Dan Patrick show
for floating that bill. But for a football team, Army Arnie,
you're basically taking your entire weighting room. You're basically taying
you're taking your entire practice facility. You're taking everything there
for one game. So that's that's a lot. That's a lot.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
Now we got Jonas there, we got LeVar there, Brady
Quinn is there, but he had to do TV anyway.
How much fun is that going to be for those guys?
I don't think they're gonna play golf for anything, but
you know, there's usually not enough time though.
Speaker 6 (04:57):
Gets you're covering a game. We went and played golf.
You're covering a game. Cover the game. Do work, don't
go play golf. What are you doing right now? You
got a job to do?
Speaker 5 (05:08):
What gosh, hey, we're gonna go down there a little
bit early to play golf. No, you're calling play by
play of a game. Call the freaking game. Learn more
about the team.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
God, look at you yelling at the clouds like that?
Speaker 5 (05:24):
What's wrong with well? You know, I just to have
certain standards, aren't he that I need for? Whenever we're
covering checks notes, Notre Dame and Navy with this kind
of firepower, and it's a twenty three point spread. So
you guys are all gonna be down there for ou
Texas whenever you have a good game. We sending everyone
out to like the the Alabama matchup against A and
(05:45):
M this year, Notre Dame nat Oh.
Speaker 3 (05:47):
But by the way, now that you're just run up
Texas real quick, Colin Coward said on a show to
you expect arch Manning in by game four.
Speaker 4 (05:59):
That's awesome.
Speaker 3 (06:01):
I'm just telling you what he said.
Speaker 5 (06:03):
Hey, you know what, I can go ahead here on
what is today's day, August Well, we're past midnight now, right, Yes,
you're right, you're right right, So August twenty third, where
Colin was wrong arch Manning. I don't know how to
tell you, guys this arch Manning is not even the
second best quarterback on Texas, so go ahead and put
(06:25):
him in early. But Quinn Eewrs is number one, number
one right now, and Quinn Ewrs is being talked about
in a higher level of greatness than arch Manning is.
But there's a dude and his name is Malik Murphy,
and I hope that they go to arch Manning before him,
(06:47):
because Malik Murphy, Arnie is an absolute stud. Everything you
could ever want in a quarterback. Malik Murphy has it.
If his name was Malik Manning, everyone would be losing
their minds right now. He's six ' five, he's two
thirty eight. He can throw, he can run. As a
(07:07):
Sooner fan, I have nightmares about him. I hope they
put Archmanning in ahead of him.
Speaker 3 (07:13):
All right, I gotta ask you a question now. And
by the way, if you want to get into the
show at playing show Atz thinking Genius one, was it
fake news or not fake news about Stefan Diggs. Did
he want out? He doesn't want out? He was mad earlier?
He wasn't mad earlier. I know he was mad earlier,
like months ago. I'm I'm still not sure what the
hell that was all about. What's going on here? Is
(07:35):
he mad?
Speaker 2 (07:35):
Is he went out or not?
Speaker 3 (07:36):
Though?
Speaker 5 (07:36):
Well, I know this is gonna shock a lot of people,
aren't he But here's the issue with Stefan Diggs. He
is a receiver in most receivers or divas, and in
this instance he has taking it to another level. I
don't think I think he's overly competitive, which you dig,
but I also think he kind of likes playing the
game a bit. He came out in responding to us
(07:59):
Steve A. Smith that said the brother wants out. I
think was the way in which he phrased it, And
this Stefan Diggs says, one hundred percent not true. I
don't know who the source is, but I thought I
nipped this s in the bud already. So I think
we're gonna see him do the same things he did
last year. Right, there'll be a few sideline blow ups,
(08:22):
but we're also getting a lot of mixed signals. We
still go back to that opening week of OTAs and
what happened in the opening week of OTASH. Are you
concerned about Stefan Diggs not being here? What Sean McDermott say, Yeah,
I'm concerned about it. And then he backtracked literally what
like hours later. So something weird is going on there.
I haven't quite figured it out.
Speaker 4 (08:43):
Right, but he's getting paid a lot of money. I
don't know. You're geting with one out right?
Speaker 3 (08:46):
You you lose him. That's one hundred and eight receptions.
All you got left is what Dave Davis after that.
You're in big, big trouble for talent or for a
wide receiver. I just Tiger, what is he mad about?
I'm not sure he's If he's mad, he had like
the second most targets in the NFL last year.
Speaker 5 (09:06):
I believe he's making twenty four million dollars a year.
I mean, I just I don't really know, and I
know it's not all about money. But they're good. I mean,
I'm sure that the Bills will probably have to go
to him here soon and try to renegotiate. He's got
a potential out of Corny to Spowtrack in twenty twenty five.
But I mean, how could this be a money thing
(09:28):
with him? I don't understand that right the deal that
he has. Maybe it is he doesn't like the direction
of the team. I don't know, But I don't know
many places you're gonna go that are in a better
position to win right.
Speaker 4 (09:41):
Now than Buffalo. You know, what's a fush alling?
Speaker 3 (09:44):
If I was gonna pick one team that is like
one of the favorites to be you know, how we
go from worse to first. Yeah, if I was gonna
pick a team to go from first down to worst,
it might be the Buffalo Bills might be a prime
candidate for maybe falling off the edge there. What do
you think.
Speaker 5 (10:01):
I I'm not disagreeing with that. I think that's a
good take because we saw how it ended for them
last year, right, and maybe maybe going back we're talking
about those moments where everything changed for teams, maybe that
might be one of those moments for Buffalo. I mean, Arnie,
(10:22):
everything was set up where Buffalo was supposed to win.
It was snowing, it was nasty, and the Bengals bullied them,
clappered him.
Speaker 4 (10:31):
Clappered him. So I hope it's not a lasting thing.
Speaker 5 (10:35):
I think the Bills are fun, but that division got
a lot tougher this oftener.
Speaker 3 (10:39):
I think they're toed overrated anyway. Look, I like James Cook,
but is he really a guy that's gonna carry the
load of Stefan Diggs is unhappy? What are you gonna
do about the passing game? And Josh Allen's a really
good quarterback, but let's be honest, there's other young quarterbacks
should probably rather have.
Speaker 4 (10:56):
He's a good one than Josh Allen.
Speaker 3 (10:59):
Yeah. Like know, well I'm not going to say too,
but if you want to go ahead and have Herbert
or you know, obviously Mahomes.
Speaker 4 (11:08):
Or yes, but that's two of them. He's in the
top five in the game.
Speaker 3 (11:13):
Right now, Burrows, Right, he's top five. Yeah, absolutely tough.
Speaker 5 (11:19):
But there's thirty two teams. What could be much better
than a top five quarterback?
Speaker 3 (11:24):
I would put him in number five. But you know,
you know what, if two has a big season this year,
I would put two ahead of him. Also, Two, I
had big numbers before he got hurt with the concussion
last year.
Speaker 5 (11:35):
Big numbers or wins more important to you? With two
number one fantasy?
Speaker 3 (11:40):
No, he was number one across the board in offensive numbers.
Speaker 5 (11:44):
Okay, great, how'd they finish the season with him on
the bench?
Speaker 3 (11:47):
Well, what do you I can't do anything about him
getting hurt.
Speaker 4 (11:49):
You know that's right? And what's your what's your best ability?
Speaker 3 (11:52):
You're what did you predict for the Dolphins this year?
What is your prediction on them?
Speaker 4 (11:56):
Two and fifteen?
Speaker 3 (11:58):
No, it is not stop it.
Speaker 5 (11:59):
Yeah, I think they're gonna be terrible. I think two
was gonna you.
Speaker 3 (12:02):
Wish you're you're hoping that two and fifteen.
Speaker 4 (12:04):
I know that two and fifteen.
Speaker 5 (12:06):
Two is gonna get hurt, and uh, they're gonna have
Tyreek Hill is gonna become a malcontent.
Speaker 4 (12:12):
They're gonna have to rely on Jalen Waddle and he'll
hurt his foot again.
Speaker 5 (12:16):
You'll be in games where it's gonna be like sixty
three because you'll have a good defense thanks to Big Fangio,
even though coordinators don't matter. I mean, that's tough schedule.
I don't I don't know any that's a division. I
think the Patriots are infinitely better. I mean, you're gonna
lose to these the Patriots.
Speaker 3 (12:31):
So tell her to give me your predicta before somebody says,
oh I'm playing to somebody, are gonna take you seriously?
Speaker 4 (12:36):
And then I'm being serious.
Speaker 3 (12:38):
Two and fifteen.
Speaker 5 (12:39):
Yeah, I think you might be Denver, you might be Carolina.
You gotta go to Washington. You're gonna quit my job
if they have two wins. Yeah, I just you're gonna
be oing to maybe Denver. But now there's a little
extra spice in the Denver matchup. Uh So, I don't know, man,
I got him twelve and five, twelve and five, twelve
and five, two and fifteen talking about Caleb Williams. See,
(13:02):
once you get to the point where you're like, let's
see here, oh and two, I'll give you one in one, two,
one of four, one and one and five. Once you
get to the point where you're like two and nine
and the Raiders beat you, then you can start thinking
about Caleb a little bit.
Speaker 4 (13:15):
Now, that'll be exciting.
Speaker 3 (13:17):
Right, Oh, yeah, that'd be very exciting. There you go,
there you go. No, it's not gonna happen. I think
everybody knows that. My friend, I see about a twelve
win year for the Dolphins, maybe even thirteen. This is
this is That's why they're trying to get Jonathan Taylor.
That's why they're the favorite to get Jonathan Taylor because
they know that they can go to the super Bowl
if they pick up that one big running You can
(13:37):
ask me.
Speaker 5 (13:37):
A question about those odds that are made for who's
getting who? Yeah, do they actually have someone who's talking
to teams and gathering true inside intel?
Speaker 4 (13:47):
Are in gathering those numbers?
Speaker 5 (13:48):
Are they just basically reading all the different reports that
are out there, Because I haven't seen Schefter or Ian
Rappaport or Mike Arafolo or any of the guys talk
about teams that are in the mix.
Speaker 3 (14:01):
No, good question. Those numbers are based on money so
they can get bets on. It's from the sports book,
so what they you know, like when they put odds
or lines down, you're trying to get money on both
teams equally, so you get hit it in the middle
and you could win both sides out there. This is
the sports book that are putting odds out to go
ahead and get money to come on in. But they
(14:22):
don't want to get buried, you know what I mean.
They don't want to go ahead and put out like
a thirty to one when there might be a chance
that the actually goes there or something to light to
that effect.
Speaker 5 (14:31):
But I don't how much do they actually have that's
wagered on bets like that.
Speaker 3 (14:37):
When Tom Brady a couple of years ago about where
he was going to go, there were a couple of
dudes that really cleaned up and bet Tampa Bay at
forty to one. I believe it was okay and made
a fortune. They were I have to look back up
the story, but they were. I think they got to
bet forty to one. That's what Tampa Bay wasn't in
the mix. And they they must add some inside information
because they really cleaned up on that one.
Speaker 5 (15:00):
Yeah, So if you have an inside information like I
don't understand if you think six of the divisions are
already over, why you wouldn't parlay that bad boy together?
Speaker 3 (15:09):
Oh totally. I think there is bother where. Do you
think Taylor's gonna end up going? Then, if you don't
think it's gonna.
Speaker 4 (15:15):
Be my m I think it's gonna be the Colts.
I think he's gonna end up back in Indy.
Speaker 5 (15:18):
I mean they're not gonna You brought up an excellent
point earlier, Arnie. You brought up an outstanding point earlier.
You said it's funny how they don't want to pay him,
but then they won't take anything but a first round
pick for him, Right, make it make sense to me? How, Oh,
we don't want to pay him anything, but we also,
you know, we don't want to end up having to
(15:39):
get anything but a first round pick.
Speaker 3 (15:41):
It would have been the same thing if they would
have Giants would have traded sakwuon Barkley. We don't want
to give him the big money, but oh, but if
you want him, you're gonna have to pay a kigs ransom.
Speaker 5 (15:48):
The guy just doesn't make any sense at all, and
it never will to me. But I think he's gonna
end up back of the Colts. I think Josh Jacobs
is gonna end up with the Raiders. But did you
see how cryptic key was today. Everyone's like, oh, Josh Jacobs,
I hear sources that things are working, and then I
think Jesine Anderson reported it. Victafer, who covers the Raiders,
(16:09):
comes out and says, well, this has always been my
opinion that he's gonna play, and then the aggregation sites
got hold of it, and Josh Jacobs replied to one
of those tweets and was like, I didn't say any
of that, or I said that question mark, and then
he quickly took it down. So I don't know what's
going on there. That's that's still a mess. I would
if I was the Dolphins, I'd call the Raiders. I
(16:30):
don't think i'd worry about Jonathan Taylor. I'd call the Raiders.
Speaker 3 (16:34):
I don't know why the Raiders haven't treated him anyway.
Considering I would think that they'd want to start thinking
about tanking for Caleb Williams unless they think they're going
to make a playoff run, which is laughable. I don't
see how that's going to, you know best, Maybe a
five D team but I'm.
Speaker 4 (16:51):
Not disagreeing with you right now.
Speaker 5 (16:53):
But they also, you know, you're starting to get some
of that buzz where some people have watched the preseason
games they're like, hey, this team might be okay, Like,
been here, been down this road before. I'm not gonna
get sucked in by your hope.
Speaker 4 (17:09):
That you're trying to give me.
Speaker 5 (17:10):
So Yeah, if I was the Dolphins, or if I
was a team that still wanted a running back, I'd
be all over the Raiders right now trying to get
Josh Jacob.
Speaker 2 (17:17):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 3 (17:28):
All Right, good evening, everybody, Chris play, Carney Span You're
right here on Fox Sports Radio if at the tyreck
dot Com studios in for the guys, Jason Smith and
his best friend Mike Harmon. I want to get to
our guest. You hear him on weekends right here on
Fox Sports Radio live in Las Vegas. Our buddy, Bernie Fratto.
Speaker 7 (17:48):
Are you doing, Bernie, gentlemen, good evening. Before we get
to the high jinks, please tell me you saw the
Josh Harris booth appearance last night?
Speaker 3 (17:57):
Yes, we did. Yes, we were talking about that earlier.
Speaker 7 (18:00):
In number sixty seven. I love preseason football. You watch
a preseason game and a Jerry Seinfeld episode breaks out.
First of all, the guy shows up in a in
an old pole shirt that looks like it looked like
he got it from a feed store. And then that
oddball debacle handshake. Do you remember the episode where the
santing appened to Costanza and you get to an argument.
Speaker 4 (18:21):
With Jerry says, Jerry, you stuck out in your hand.
Speaker 7 (18:23):
And I shook it. I couldn't stop thinking about that,
so anyway, I digress.
Speaker 3 (18:27):
I love it. I love it. Bernie, you're the Detroit guy.
You're the Michigan guy. What's going on? First of all,
we did a segment where Artie was right and Artie
was right or Chris I should have mentioned I told
you it'd be less than four games. You thought it
was going to be more, Well, it's going to be
more the punishment of Harba. Remember we said, yeah, it's
gonna be more than four.
Speaker 4 (18:48):
Then three games? Bernie, tellim, Bernie, what's going on here?
Speaker 3 (18:52):
In why the three games?
Speaker 7 (18:53):
There's a lot of moving parts here, guys. And I
was even on the phone with one of my good
moles just about three hours ago. So Michigan self imposed
suspension on Harball three games. They did it to appease
the NCAAA and hopefully potentially curtail any future sanctions after
the first of the year, because this isn't over now.
(19:14):
The NCAA wants two things. They want an apology, and
they wanted admission that Jim Harbaugh was not truthful around
the whole cheeseburger incident. He went from completely denying it
to saying they didn't remember it. And he's been very obstinate,
and he's angry, and he's taken on an attitude of hey,
there's a bigger fixture for out here, why are you
doing that to me? And so the more he pulled away,
(19:36):
the more the NCAA drilled down. They found violations on
zoom calls and text messaging and other recruiting things, and
so the things spung out of control. Here's where it
also takes on a different dimension. Jim Harball's buyout is
only two point two million in January, and his people say, hey,
Sean Payton's fifty nine years old. Look what he got.
(19:58):
Jim Harball's fifty nine years old. We think he's more accomplished.
Watch out what happens in January. This is his best team.
He's gonna give it one last hurrah. There's a certainly
a possibility that he moves on. Part of the reason
that Michigan also did this is because even if Harbaugh
moves on, Michigan is left behind to deal with the NCAA.
Speaker 4 (20:19):
They won't let it go.
Speaker 7 (20:21):
And so by self imposing this three game suspension, which
is a complete fagazy joke, at least it sends an
intention that, all right.
Speaker 4 (20:31):
We take some culpability.
Speaker 7 (20:34):
It's a de facto admission on our behalf that Harbaugh's
apologizing and we know he was not truthful, So go
leaning on us in January when this resumes.
Speaker 4 (20:43):
So here's my question, a broader scope pulling back.
Speaker 5 (20:48):
Is this Bernie the start of the nca trying to
be the enforcement arm that they used to be and
actually enforce nil rules and things of that nature, or
is this the one one thing that they have power
over right now, So for this moment they're gonna do
it and use it in every way they can before
they become a powerless and even more rudderless organization.
Speaker 7 (21:10):
Yeah, I think it's the latter, Chris, and you're very
well plugged in. This is also really an outlier that's
got a genesis going back three years.
Speaker 2 (21:19):
And you know, you don't lie to the judge.
Speaker 3 (21:21):
Man.
Speaker 7 (21:21):
The cover I've been joking, the cover up's always worse
than the cheeseburger. And that's what's happened here. It's it's
allowed itself to fester and and continue ad infinitum, just
because of the way Harbaugh conducted himself with respect to cooperating.
And by the way, Mike McDonald, his top defensive coordinator
(21:42):
while he was there, who's now working for John Harbor
on Baltimore, has been gone two years. Even he was
given a show cause penalty and I found out why,
and it's because he completely stonewalled the NCAA, didn't return
it into their calls anything, and they didn't like that either.
So the tight ends coach is missing a game, the
defensive coordinators missing game. So Michigan fans, I'm sure they're
(22:02):
shaking in their boots against East Carolina this week.
Speaker 3 (22:05):
Yeah, yeah, Bertie. While we're on the subject of colleges,
any of the games moving the need on any I
think Hawaiian Vandibilt seems to give you getting some money
on it because that Lion seems to be moving a
little bit by any of the other games you.
Speaker 4 (22:17):
Like or what.
Speaker 7 (22:18):
There's one game I like a lot, and I think
Chris can attest to this. Lincoln Riley is absolutely money
in game one. In his six years, his average margin
of victory Week one is thirty six and a half points.
They're laying thirty and a half against San Jose. I
think USC's offense will be able to name their number.
I think they'll put a fifty burger on them. Yeah.
(22:40):
I think you lay the thirty and a half and
go to sleep. That's going to be a blowout.
Speaker 5 (22:44):
Bertie, we were talking about teams that are kind of
super Bowl or BUS. They got about five or six.
But I don't think the Lions are super Bowl or BUS.
But I do think there's a playoff or bust mindset.
What have you seen in this Detroit Lions team that
has you even buying in What's Can you believe in
him a bit this year?
Speaker 7 (23:01):
Yeah, it's a great question, and I will tell you.
Let's go back to when the Lions started one and six,
Dan Campbell made a command decision under the radar that
turned out to be very shrewd. He fired his defensive
backs coach, Aubrey Pleasant. Pleasant was running this risk reward
scheme that was highly ineffective, caused major communication problems, breakdowns,
(23:24):
blown coverages, and they were one and six. They installed
a much simpler system and it worked. They were eight
and two down the stretch. But the Lions knew they
needed to get better in the secondary, so in the
offseason they went out and got Cameron Sutton from the Steelers,
Chauncey Gardner Johnson from the Eagles, and Emmanuel Molsley from
the forty nine Ers, all big upgrades. Plus they drafted
(23:45):
linebacker Jack Campbell out of Iowa, who's been so impressive
in camp. His nickname is Jack Lambert. Of course you
remember Jack. He could really play. He's a stud, he's
got a super high football acut. He's a great open
field tackler. So Allons don't need to be the Steel
Curtain on defense.
Speaker 4 (24:03):
They just need to.
Speaker 7 (24:03):
Be a little better than they were last year because
their offense should be outstanding and they've got a top
five offensive line now. Ironically, of course, the years I
covered the Lions, Matt Millan would draft a wide receiver
of a year. Ironically, it's their wide receiver room that's
a little thin if there's a position of concern, or
there's a position where they really lack depth. But beyond
(24:24):
all that, from Brad Holmes to Dan Campbell on down,
the cultures different. They were nine to eight last year.
There's no reason in my view, they can't win one
more game. Go ten and seven. I think that's going
to be good enough to get into the playoffs. The
Vikings will be bit by a thing called the Pythagoream theorem.
They gave up three more points last year than they
scored thirteen and four. Teams don't do that, they're going
(24:46):
to regress. I'm not even close to buying in on
Justin Fields. I'm tired of the speeches. He completed three
passes for negative seven air yards and they got them
the next Joe Namath. Meanwhile, I'm not sold on on
Jordan Love either. I think Green Bays an excellent roster,
so the division is wide open. It lines up. The
Lions have the ninth easiest schedule and he You know,
(25:08):
I think the Chiefs have a couple of holdouts on
their defensive line, and now Jackson Smith and Jigwa he's
out for several weeks with the Seahawks. What do I
bring that up? Those are the line's first two opponents.
So add it all up, and I think the lines
would be ten and seven if.
Speaker 3 (25:20):
Dad Kemp on the hot seat. I don't God, yeah,
nobody have an aggregation.
Speaker 4 (25:26):
Out of control?
Speaker 2 (25:27):
Who was that?
Speaker 3 (25:27):
Why?
Speaker 2 (25:28):
Ray Charles or actually says that to Chris.
Speaker 3 (25:31):
They were putting it out on Twitter that said that
somebody was reporting that if he loved the guy, yeah,
if he didn't win his like first so many games,
that he could be on the hot seat. I'm like,
get out of here.
Speaker 7 (25:41):
No way was there alcohol involved in this Transit may
have been preseason games, you like anybody in the final week,
you could really really.
Speaker 3 (25:51):
Get the advantage of the final week of the preseason.
Speaker 7 (25:54):
Well, there is one game actually that I am playing
to because of the trend. You've got the Battle of
New York. The Jets are laying four and a half
against the Giants, and since the inception of Hard Knocks,
the Hard Knocks team, the Hard Knocks participant is three
and fourteen against the spread in the final game of
(26:15):
the year, and they're laying four and a half points.
And I get it that Aaron Rodgers are going to
play a series. I like to cut the jib of
this Giants team. I think Brian Dables got something going
here so they can hang that number and went out right.
So I do like the New York Giants in the
final preseason game, and I like the USC Trojans to
lay the wood.
Speaker 3 (26:33):
Wow, Bertie, wait, can people check you out on weekends?
My friend?
Speaker 7 (26:37):
Well, Friday night eleven pm Pacific or I'd be actually
one am Central in Chris Plank. That's God's country time there.
That's right. That's why I should really describe it. So
eleven pm to two am. I would have converted the
one to four, but I'm not smart enough Chris to.
Speaker 3 (26:55):
Do that that quick.
Speaker 7 (26:56):
Saturday night, eleven pm Pacific to three am Eastern, Come early,
stay late.
Speaker 3 (27:01):
We'll have some fun, all right, Bernie will be listening. Appreciated,
my friend. We'll catch up with you later on.
Speaker 7 (27:06):
Thanks for having me, guys, appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (27:08):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific.
Speaker 3 (27:14):
Of course, Chris plant Gard He'spanner and for the Guys Night,
Jason Smith is best friend Mike Harmon. As we are
live at direc dot com Studios, a couple of things.
I wanted to get to the next segment, We'll get
to our picks. But Steph Curry was on Gilbert Arena's podcast.
They asked, I.
Speaker 5 (27:32):
Had this audio for you. I'm sorry, I don't know
where it went. It just disappeared, that's all right.
Speaker 3 (27:36):
But they asked Steph Curry if he's the best point
guard ever in the history of the game, and he
just said, yeah, it's me and Magic. That's It's got
to be the conversation, I guess. And at first the
first thing guy asaid was gall are you kidding me?
And I'm like, well, wait a minute. Here, it is
him and Magic, right to two best point guards ever?
(27:57):
Am I missing out on somebody whos there's somebody else
that that should be in that equation there, maybe at
John Stockton, but no, no, not not even close to
those two.
Speaker 4 (28:08):
You know.
Speaker 3 (28:08):
Bob Coozy, Bob Coozy.
Speaker 4 (28:12):
He belongs in that list. You know that's it's football season. Man,
what are we doing? I mean interesting, I'm not I'm not.
Speaker 5 (28:24):
Disagreeing with you. It has to be talked about. It's
out there.
Speaker 4 (28:28):
But I don't like.
Speaker 5 (28:31):
I don't want to fight over whether or not Steph
Curry is one of the greatest of not the greatest
point guard of all time, because it.
Speaker 4 (28:40):
Just we we chase our tails in this right.
Speaker 5 (28:43):
I've expended too much energy fighting people about Lebron and
Michael and I throw Kobe in there. But and now
we're gonna start fighting over who's the best point guard
of all time?
Speaker 4 (28:54):
Who's the best stretch for of all time? Who would
you go with? Arnie? But Steph Curry changed the game? Man?
Speaker 5 (29:02):
Why do we have to debate whether or not he's
the greatest point guard? He's no, I don't know even
from MJ and Steph Curry might be the two guys
that have changed the game more than anyone, because what
does everyone do now? Arnie shoot threes? That's true, everyone
(29:22):
can shoot threes. They're knocking him down. Arnie Spanier's style.
The dude changed the game. I think he's one of
the if not the greatest, one of the greatest shooters
of all time.
Speaker 4 (29:33):
It's greatest point guard. He and Magic. We can have
that fight.
Speaker 5 (29:37):
You know, there's other great point guards that deserve the conversation.
But I just how does this even start? And why
do we end up fighting over it?
Speaker 3 (29:46):
Because well, because he was like Gilbert Arenas's podcast, so back.
Speaker 4 (29:50):
But have you ever listened to Gilbert Arenas's podcast.
Speaker 3 (29:53):
Yeah, it's got some pretty juicy stuff sometimes out there.
Speaker 4 (29:56):
You know, Okay, maybe I'm missing out.
Speaker 5 (29:59):
Maybe I any stop listening to over my dead body
and start listening to Gilbert Arenas.
Speaker 3 (30:04):
And I gave you earlier talking about football. We talked
a little bit about this in our womans. I gave
you a little bit of hope. I told you that
the Raiders had the third best offense in the preseason
so far, and Aiden O'Connell is the uh what the
preseason MVP. The guy has been awesome. And you know,
even Tom Brady took notice of him. People are taking
(30:25):
it that was fake? Really, Yes, that Tom Brady quote
was fake, like made up.
Speaker 4 (30:33):
Yeah, it was a fake quote because I fell for it.
Speaker 3 (30:36):
Too, So get out of here.
Speaker 4 (30:38):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (30:38):
Yeah, there is a there is a Raider fan who
literally just made up the quote. And because we're so thirsty, Arnie, we're.
Speaker 4 (30:48):
So thirsty for any kind of information.
Speaker 3 (30:51):
Everyone rang if somebody put it out, well, because somebody
said Tom Brady said, so I took it. The guy
reported it, you.
Speaker 5 (30:59):
Know, yeah, it's it's It's no, Tom Brady has not
said anything. There is this I guess report that either.
Oh oh, Tom Pelasaro. Tom Pelasaro said on The Herd
that Aide O'Connell has Tom Brady like tendencies and skill sets.
(31:21):
But yeah, no, Tom Brady has not said anything about
Aide O'Connell.
Speaker 3 (31:26):
I do want to see him get a chance to play, though,
I am intrigued by what he's done so far.
Speaker 5 (31:29):
I'm in, I'm in, I'm in. I've done one Ady.
I'm completely in right now.
Speaker 4 (31:33):
I like him.
Speaker 5 (31:34):
I think he's You don't have to have the most
incredibly athletic looking, nimble quarterback to be successful. I mean,
look at Brady. Look at Brad Johnson and Trent del
for they won Super Bowls. Hell, look at Joe Thai.
He's been for goodness sakes, They're not dudes that you
look at you like. That guy's amazing. So I'm in
right now. I don't think he's gonna play this year.
I think he's gonna be the third string guy. But
(31:55):
I'm in. Let's see how it works out. Let's see
if he gets a chance.
Speaker 3 (31:57):
All right, well, come back, we'll get to our picks

kicks the pitch, swinging a liner off of the.
Speaker 2 (33:15):
Vaal gets through.
Speaker 4 (33:16):
It's a base hit.
Speaker 2 (33:17):
Stop scorers Marsh being waved home.
Speaker 3 (33:20):
He's gonna score and the phillis I just won it.
Speaker 6 (33:25):
Trey Turner wins it with a smash back up the
middle off of Dovall and the Phillies take a.
Speaker 4 (33:31):
Four three win.

because one week left in the preseason and you're done
in college football.
Speaker 4 (34:02):
I'm done.
Speaker 3 (34:02):
I'm waiting here at nine and thirteen in the preseason.
I can't do it anymore. I was horrible. I was
just embarrassed at my preseason picks. But last year, my
preseason picks did bad, and my regular season picks were
like at sixty percent.
Speaker 5 (34:18):
I think you're I'm gonna give you credit. I think
both were actually pretty good.
Speaker 3 (34:21):
Yeah. No, I'm on fire, and you know I'm mister
college for.
Speaker 5 (34:24):
You're not on fire. You were good last year. You're
terrible on fire, so you need to bounce back.
Speaker 3 (34:29):
All right, Well, I'm just gonna give you my four
college picks. I'm all over Notre Dame minus the twenty
and a half against Davy, Notre Dame should probably be
a top ten team. Maybe they're gonna have trouble putting
points on the board. They may be able to move
the ball a little bit. We talked about this when
we were on our Sunday show. They've come up with
(34:50):
different formations to run the ball. But Notre Dame so
good upfront defensively, I see the Irish winning this one
by easily more than three touchdowns. I'm gonna take not
to day way in the twenty and a half of
this one.
Speaker 5 (35:01):
Chriz so a three point game last year, but whole
new mindset for Navy and uh Sam Hartman keeping on.
I'm stud he's gonna be fun to watch and he's
got a great beard. The wake Forest transfer to the
quarterback for Notre Dame. So I like Notre Dame a
lot in this game, but I think it's gonna be
close in the first half.
Speaker 4 (35:20):
Think it'll be a good first half.
Speaker 3 (35:21):
I am taking. First of all, I had Vanderbilt minus
the seventeen. Then I switched to Hawaii because Todd Furman
talked me into it. Did I switch back to Vandy
because you talked me into it? Then I finally sat
down and said, who do you really like? And I
said my original pick was Vanderbilt. Gonna stick with them.
Hawaii is a little bit in shambles. Vander built a
(35:42):
much better team. That's a lot of lumber Toway seventeen.
But I'll go ahead and lay the seventeen points in
this one.
Speaker 4 (35:47):
Kriz, I think it's a good pick.
Speaker 5 (35:48):
Man. I like it's gonna be weird because they have construction,
so they're fixing both end zones.
Speaker 4 (35:54):
But I like your pick.
Speaker 3 (35:55):
Here San Diego State. I'm gonna lay the three points
against Ohio. That's gonna be as the game it could
be in Ohio victory. It should be a good one.
But San Diego stay at home. Only the three points
in that one. Chris, I like it.
Speaker 4 (36:07):
I like it, Arnie, I like it.
Speaker 3 (36:09):
I'm going against Bertie Fratto. I gotta take the thirty
and a half. With San Jose State. They can actually
move the ball and score you stealing. May have to
put up a fifty burger to cover the thirty and
a half. But I'm gonna take the thirty and a
half with San Jose State in this one. Good called,
and we got the big game tomorrow Thursday. You know
(36:30):
that On Thursday, Arizona playing Thursday No my semi final
basketball game here in town.
Speaker 4 (36:36):
My gosh, the.
Speaker 3 (36:38):
Blue team against the white team.
Speaker 4 (36:39):
Why are you doing this when we're filling in during
the week.
Speaker 3 (36:42):
It is a pickup game. I gotta go with my team,
the blue team. I should be be chipping in with
about three to six points.
Speaker 5 (36:50):
No, I really enjoy and I love doing these shows.
I promise I won't let Arnie drive again where he
can talk about his wreck.
Speaker 6 (36:58):
Lee.
Speaker 3 (36:58):
Woah, what do you the rest of the week got
big plans or what?
Speaker 2 (37:02):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (37:02):
You know what?
Speaker 5 (37:04):
It is my thirty year class reunion this week. Wow,
I'm going home. I'm going home this week and my
daughter's My daughter's gonna ride with me. She's not going
to the event, and I'll go see a bunch of
people that I have no desire to.
Speaker 4 (37:17):
Spend any time around. So it should be a fun
Saturday night.
Speaker 3 (37:20):
Good for you. Thanks Tamar Grahamsay and Ryan Berschinger running
the show. Be Finley of course on the updates, my
partner Chris Plank, tex To Smith and Harmon for letting
us fill in. We're back on Sunday, but coming up
next year. I love him big Ben Mallor we'll see
what he's getting ready to talk about with the Mallard Militia.
(37:43):
So stick around for then. We'll see on Sunday right
here on Fox Sports Radio.
