Speaker 2 (00:22):
Let's give this you're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
Hello, Welcome in side final hour tonight, the Jason Smith
Show with my bes friend Mike Harmon. So tonight we
got the latest college football playoff poll.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
Yay, not a lot of big changes, all right.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
The team's one through five, okay, Ohio State number one,
Indiana number two. They played this week in the Big
Ten championship game. Georgia three, Texas Tech four, Oregon fifth.
Now not surprising because because we had Texas A and
M dropped down after they're lost to Texas. So you
got Georgia. Indeed, Georgia and Oregon and Texas Tech all
moving up a spot. So not a lot, not a
(01:08):
lot of crazy stuff. The crazy stuff gets to when
you get to like the number ten ish, like that's
where things get read.
Speaker 3 (01:14):
Somebody nuts, but it'll Miss moving up.
Speaker 4 (01:16):
I mean, is this just an overreaction to we can't
move him down because it's been played up even though
the coach left and we've set precedent in the past.
Speaker 1 (01:26):
We're not gonna do this. I am not taking that
phone call from Jordan Travis. I am not taking that
phone call about moving Let's move him up a bit.
You know, just when they just when they start changing
the answers, i'd start changing, right, Let's not move him down.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
Let's move him up a bit. Hey, that'll get him,
that'll get them.
Speaker 4 (01:42):
Well he does this send the messages that they're better
off without Lane Givin eight seven seven ninety nine.
Speaker 3 (01:48):
I mean, just think about that for a second. Right here,
here's Oh no, we're gonna move you up.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
Wait a minute, what I mean? He did send Charlie
Weiss junior back, and the Kiffin doesn't care because LSU
is gonna give him money depending on however well Ole
Miss does in the playoffs. So the higher the ranking,
the more likely they are to win a game. Yeah,
I'm happy with that. I don't care like he wins
through mental telepithy. Yeah, look at we got a wizard
on staff. But where things get interesting and they get
(02:15):
to what we've told you about this college football playoff
for a while, right around nine to ten, where nine
is Alabama, ten is Notre Dame. Somehow Alabama is ahead
of Notre Dame. Now after a while, you know, and
then you have the Conference Championship number four CONFCE shamp
number five and eleven and twelve placeholder team's in there. Now,
this is where things are going to get absolutely crazy.
(02:37):
You have Steve Sarkesian politicking about getting Texas into the tournament.
And look, they've lost three games, but they've beat three
top ten teams. Okay, what do you do if Duke
wins the A season?
Speaker 3 (02:49):
What do you do it? Virginia Wine Aces, what are
you gonna do there?
Speaker 2 (02:52):
Right?
Speaker 1 (02:52):
What about James Madison? Like you are going to get
to a point and we told you that this is
an absolute tire fire because you're going to see heritage
programs get left out of the college football Playoff. Notre Dame, Texas,
maybe Alabama, depending on how things they're doing. Everything can
to keep Alabama in. But depending on how things go,
(03:15):
you can see that Miami is gonna wind up being
out right and part of it I want to say
is Okay, the ACC, it's your fault for having a
stupid ass tiebreaker and not evolving with the rest of
college football. Say what you want about how the big
ten in the SEC treat the rest of college football, like, hey,
you're not even worth our time. But I know there
(03:35):
is nobody looking out for that conference more than the
two of them. Right, the SEC, all the television contracts,
everything else, ESPN, all this, they're gonna get five teams
in the playoff, right, Okay, So I can't fault them
because they're doing what they can for their come. No,
it's a good strategy, Acylamustern get take on every bit
of a twenty four hour news cycle you can. The
(03:56):
ACC is like, hey, we're gonna get a team in, right, Like, hey,
be strong, don't sit here and try to back your
way in. And at the very least, when you know
how the college football is changing because there's no rules,
know that, Hey, maybe the right thing to do is
when we get to the AEC title game, we have
the highest ranked teams if there's a tiebreaker, right, No,
don't we do that, because isn't that going to have
(04:18):
the best chance of getting teams into the playoffs if
we have the tiebreaker be the highest ranked teams. That's
just stupid that you don't have that right. What was
really stupid? What was boat Bridge's name in Jerry maguire,
Baker fabulous Baker boys, that is that's pretty good. That's
he was mister Cushman. Yeah, but what did he have
a first name? I got Cushlash cush Lash because I
(04:39):
don't think that's what they call them either way.
Speaker 3 (04:41):
The problem that your word is stronger than O. That's thing. Right.
Speaker 1 (04:44):
It's like the acc went into a meeting and they
got a handshake and an eye and some eye contacts, like,
all right, we have an understanding, right, but it's nowhere.
It wasn't in writing that you actually get an automatic
invite to this party.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
You don't.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
You don't get a table held up for you.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
It's such a blank show, right, Like the Duke controversy
is stupid. And look, we talked about Manny Diaz a
few minutes ago, a former sports on RPA many ds
your guy when he says stuff like, well, of course
you deserve to be in the championship, Well, obviously that's
the way it works with the tie breakers. But look
at teams we lost to, you know, two teams in
the top ten, well, another top fifteen team. Are like, okay,
don't sit here and tell me we lost to good teams.
(05:22):
So we beat all the bad teams. So of course
we said, don't kim me think about this. It's an
absolute load of crap.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
The next question to manage it, and then you can
count to three, right, and.
Speaker 1 (05:32):
They're unlike, hoops, this is gonna linger because and this
is why we've said it's gonna be a blank show
all year long, because you can't expect a sport without
rules to get to the playoff, which is the biggest
thing of the season, and to have it not be
an absolute blank show where everybody is yelling and screaming
for their conference, their school to get in, and when
(05:53):
you get left out, there's gonna be all sorts of
bad feelings. Like again, there's no rules in college football,
so don't you can't expect well, oh, of course, the
college football playoff is gonna be right down the middle.
Speaker 3 (06:04):
We know who gets in, we know where they're gonna
get There's gonna.
Speaker 1 (06:06):
Be no car no when there's no rules and you
have the most important thing. It's an absolute free frugs,
like putting a big piece of meat on a table
and putting all a whole bunch of dogs around it,
going Okay, don't go after this raw meat that's in
the middle of the ten I want nobody go Oh.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
My god, I gotta get out. All the dogs are
going after the meat.
Speaker 1 (06:23):
Like that's we knew this was gonna happen because there's
no rules in college football.
Speaker 4 (06:29):
I'm picturing my dog from like five years ago. He's
a tiny little thing. Someone left a chair untouched just
enough ate an entire play to hammers. Oh, I grilled
outside like the whole thing, getting the rest of it,
like they didn't guard the table.
Speaker 1 (06:46):
And you know what he probably do. You know they
say dogs have a great memory. I guarantee you he
thinks about that every day, greatest day of his I
have no doubt.
Speaker 4 (06:53):
I all about two and a half pounds of hamburger
that that little guy would have ingested, which is about
a fifth of his body weight.
Speaker 1 (07:01):
But all of that to say, all he does is
sat on the house of struggle to breathe pray for mojo.
Speaker 4 (07:08):
But the idea that year to year you're expecting some
level of consistency, Like there's guidelines, there's all of that,
but there's no hard and fast rules right as to
how they're going to approach each conference how and even
the conferences themselves. You got to adapt with the time, right.
If there's new innovations and changes that need to happen
(07:29):
in your HOA, in plumbing, in whatever, like you got
updates code and when the rules of engagement are changing,
you know, nil and everything else means you probably need
to go back and look at your own constitution and
buy laws and everything else to make sure you are
protected in the event that we get into these quagmire
of two and three lost teams. So as we look
(07:52):
at the examination of this, you know, the style points
are back right, coaches allow you know they or that
meaningless touchdown.
Speaker 1 (08:01):
It's like, no, it's not meaningless because not everybody's watching
the games like we do our NFL analysis. Like you
could tell who watched a couple of highlights, a quick
thirty second vignette of a quarterback, wide receiver combo or something,
and then looked at a box score versus actually going
through a sixty minute game. You know, even if you
do the condensed version or whatever else. Same thing in
(08:21):
college football. They don't have time to watch all these games.
Speaker 4 (08:24):
Now before they vote, they get an idea, they get
a recap.
Speaker 3 (08:27):
They might have some trusted people. What did you see?
What are you okay?
Speaker 2 (08:30):
Cool?
Speaker 1 (08:31):
And then you go and you politic accordingly. And that's
what we're.
Speaker 3 (08:36):
Seeing this year.
Speaker 1 (08:37):
Look at some of these statements, Well, you know, Notre
Dame went out and beat up you know, and did
really well against Stanford, Stanford, and then the pause, big
dramatic pause. Let me give you the Alabama side of things, right,
they played really.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
Well for a half.
Speaker 4 (08:54):
So I mean that's where the lion in the sand
is at this point is we're making it up as
we go along, so don't be surprised when it goes
against you.
Speaker 1 (09:05):
Now to give you something different, right, we get we
told you all along what a blank show this is
gonna be. To give you something different. Now, you watch
when next week you see teams like Texas, Miami, whoever
it is, these big time heritage teams get left out
of the college football playoff, when the big movers and
(09:27):
shakers get left out because it's one thing where last
year it was one team and it was kind of
a week.
Speaker 3 (09:32):
Well we do.
Speaker 1 (09:34):
We let Miami in. They lost to Syracuse. They lost
that game. If they had won, they would have been in,
but they lost. They had three losses. It's easy to hey,
one team out. But now there's gonna be multiple teams
that are gonna say, we have just as good a
resume as them, and you took them over us and
all this and their heritage teams is the problem. Yeah,
this is not like if Texas Tech is okay, Yeah,
(09:55):
Texas Tech, we don't care what you have to say. Right,
If this is Virginia Tech, we don't care what you
have to do. Say, But Texas, well, we care, right, Miami,
well we care. Alabama we care. There's going to be
because of this in the NIL era. Now you are
now seeing every year there are teams that figure out
(10:15):
NIL for a couple of year span because they now
have the rich alumni or whatever they're able to do.
We loosen up the purses to get great players. There's
gonna be in Indiana every year.
Speaker 3 (10:27):
Now. Is Indiana gonna be great forever?
Speaker 5 (10:29):
No?
Speaker 1 (10:29):
But are they gonna have a nice two three year run? Absolutely,
one hundred percent. There's more teams that we're gonna get
like Ole miss or Texas Tech or Texas A and
M who figure out nil. There are more the the
contenders pool for the playoff is bigger than it was
(10:51):
because you would think, Okay, the contenders are always gonna be.
I can give you the top four teams in the
Big Ten. I'll give you the top five teams in
the SEC. That's just gonna be there. But now there's
gonna be more outliers every year because these schools will
figure out nil because of that. And when now that
you see the heritage team's getting left out, this is like, hey,
when something happens in baseball involving the Yankees, when something
(11:11):
happens in football involving the Cowboys. This is where rule
changes come in college football. Who can't get on the
same page for anything. Watch how miraculously they all get
on the same page the end of the season and
they go, you know what, we need a sixteen team playoff.
They couldn't figure it out last year because it's money
and it's this and we don't know and no, we
think we can. We can get all of our teams in.
(11:33):
And when screw you, guys, scup, they will never get
on the safe. They will find an incredible way to
all sit in a room and say sixteen sixteen, sixteen,
and will divide the money this way, this with it. Okay,
next year, sixteen team playoff because they're not gonna have
this happen again where Texas out or Alabama or that's
not gonna happen again. We're getting to sixteen teams next year. Yeah,
(11:56):
just the difficulty, right, you talk about in teams like Indiana,
remember they the training and the progress of quarterbacks is rapid.
The way these systems all work now, right, we watch
kids come up slinging the rock through high school. Once
upon a time it was three yards at a cloud
of dust. So you got a lot more college ready quarterbacks. Well,
(12:19):
they don't want to sit. They want to go make
money and play, which means more opportunity for inventive offensive
minds to bring guys in right away and maybe catch
lightning in a bottle with the right schedule, because that's
part of what we have here. Right, we talked about Texas,
A and M. You talk about some of the all right,
you just happen to miss all the big guys on
(12:39):
your schedule this year, right, So it's the perfect set
of circumstances. You have a talented team that gets pushed
a little bit higher. When we talk about Texas the
the preseason, number one, you're telling me there aren't a
bunch of people lobbying because they want to look right,
because all of a sudden, Arch Manning goes in and
plays like a house of fire and suddenly Texas is
on a run or you're gonna leave Notre Dame like
(13:01):
you're talking about these moneyed squads, And that's the thing,
right with it comes the much larger pot of gold
because while we can't guarantee year or the year that
all of these blue bloods are getting in, you're you're
really expanding the perimeter to really make sure that they've
got one foot and one leg over the fence to
(13:22):
just kind of fall over, right, as long as they
don't throw up on themselves. So yeah, it's it's one
of those where you're recognized for TV purposes, for dollar purposes,
for institutional juice, and what you're trying to do is
you're still fighting the NFL. Right.
Speaker 4 (13:36):
Steven in his update keeps talking about the twenty If
you've got playoff games and these NFL games by the way, Bears, Packers, Yeah,
I run it out. So your college football as a group,
you're also figuring out where are your windows that you
can at least still make some hay. Look, it's it's
simply going to happen, right. I just understand college with
no rule, you can change stuff. That's that's the one
(13:58):
silver lining is that with college football having no rules,
we can do whatever you want to fives here, So
let's get to sixteen teams, right, I mean until.
Speaker 1 (14:05):
They get bizarre like Kennesaw Mountain Landers. Yeah, he said,
this is the way it is.
Speaker 3 (14:10):
You're out, exit out about a fresco exit swalling down.

to tonight night.
Speaker 3 (15:35):
Probably watching a Knicks loss. Now, no, no, no, no,
that could be true.
Speaker 1 (15:39):
I was across the street at Danielle Grossi's house because
she had a party because this was the debut of
the Michael Jackson video Thriller, the fourteen minute version on
MTV that changed the world of videos forever when this
thing came out. I mean, we had she had a
party around the unveiling of the Michael Jackson Thriller video.
Speaker 4 (16:02):
Because it had that open, right, it was a movie. Yeah,
Like it wasn't just Hey, here's the next video of
by flock of singles.
Speaker 3 (16:08):
No, No, No, let's go.
Speaker 1 (16:10):
Here's the Buggles another one, the first one ever played
here on MTV, and MTV had only been a couple
of years old by that point, sure, and they were
still trying to figure out their way, still very niche programming.
And this video comes out and it's suddenly, whoa, It's
the biggest story on the planet because Michael Jackson is
the biggest, the biggest musical star on the planet at
that point, And here comes a video. It's fourteen minutes
(16:31):
and John Landis directed it. Yeah, and you know it's
it's You're going back the very first bit of zombie,
the first modern day zombie video that we all liked it. Look,
I was a big fan of Night Living Dead, but
still this brought that to an entirely new realm of people.
And this was that big a deal. It was the
thriller video is premiering, And I just think back to
(16:51):
MTV would say, hey, world premiere video for this song,
and you would always like, it's gonna be at eight
o'clock on I'm gonna watch like that became appointment viewing.
Hey Onneion Roses new video debuting world premiere yeh nine
pm Saturday night. Right here Adam Curry has the Adam
Curry again.
Speaker 3 (17:10):
It changed everything in music that when this video came out.
Speaker 4 (17:13):
But you go back to Landis's Run right Animal House,
to Blues Brothers, to an American Werewolf in London Coming soon,
documentary Trading Places, and Twilight Zone, the movie which had
its yeah.
Speaker 3 (17:26):
Still the best selling album of all time, right, I believe?
Speaker 1 (17:29):
So yeah, still there is yeah yeah, and then he
that or Bodyguard soundtrack.
Speaker 3 (17:33):
I want to say, but I think it's still thriller.
I think it's still thriller.
Speaker 4 (17:36):
And then and then you come back after thriller gets
put in there, and then you have spies like us
and Clue, yeah, oh Clue, so underrated, such a fabulous movie.
Speaker 3 (17:47):
Are you making moral judgments? Missus Peacock?
Speaker 1 (17:50):
But like being remade now finally this this video again
it was It's a whole story, right. It ends with
with sorry spoiler and end with Mike Jacksone hugs his
girlfriend and he closes his eyes and his eyes.
Speaker 3 (18:03):
Get red, like oh, he really is a demon. Oh
I got it's so scary all the thriller video.
Speaker 4 (18:07):
See if they could have inserted him directly into V
the way they did his eyes.
Speaker 3 (18:11):
Too, Yeah, they could have done that.
Speaker 1 (18:14):
The Lizard People wasn't Freddy Freddy Krueger was, Yeah, yeah
he was great, man, No, he was fantastic walking across
the street, Mark Singer from.
Speaker 3 (18:23):
What Beast Master? Yeah, Tanya Roberts was, yeah, yeah, there
you go.
Speaker 4 (18:28):
Sure, all right, So according to a quick review, you
got Thriller, Uh, the Eagles greatest hits.
Speaker 1 (18:34):
Oh yeah, always Dark Side of the Moons. Okay, back
in Black and the Bodyguard. Back in Black used to
be number two for a long time. Now I dropped.
What's the question going back to that best selling album
selling albums of all a thriller, thriller, thriller?
Speaker 3 (18:48):
Yeah, and then number two? Well, you got no back
in Black. According to this list, it just had him
randomly together. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (18:56):
So back in Black, Uh, then the Bodyguard, then Darkseye,
than the Eagles.
Speaker 3 (19:00):
Here's the thing. Here's that, followed by Hotel California right
right after No, I.
Speaker 1 (19:04):
Got a thing here now really fast? Okay, so yes,
I still listen to Back in Black? Sure, people still
listen to Back in Black Bodyguard, huge soundtrack, one of
the greatest soundtracks ever. Uh, people still listen to that, right,
people's I don't know anybody that says you don't want
to listen to it. Let's listen to the Eagles Greatest Hits.
I don't know anybody that puts on the Eagles Greatest Hits.
(19:25):
It's because they suck this year. It's because everybody Jalen
hurts and he's the lead singer. Can't stand that guy.
Speaker 3 (19:33):
They threw eggs and old Joey, Really you raised your hand? Okay,
I do have It's in my playlist.
Speaker 1 (19:40):
No you Monday night, I gotta work. They're gonna be
here talking DJ. They will get bolted down on Monday night.
What's what's the ticket going for for that? I gotta
imagine people are looking for a great escape.
Speaker 3 (19:54):
I don't.
Speaker 1 (19:55):
I don't know, and not even my dad, who still
listens to CD in the car. And when I when
I when my dad goes out of town, he say,
do me a favor, like you drive my car around
once every few days.
Speaker 3 (20:04):
I'm like, Dad, your car's okay, fine? Sure, Like he
still thinks it's nineteen eighty five. Yeah, you gotta drive
the car.
Speaker 1 (20:09):
Battery's gonna die. Yeah, come back, I go. You're gone
for ten days. Okay, this is Los Angeles. The weather
is fine. You know, it gets a little chilly, but
like you know, fifty five degrees is not negative twenty.
It's not it's not ever Ready. Battery time, diehard battery.
We're gonna start it in the snow. Uh, you're fine,
but I drive a snow you do it.
Speaker 3 (20:27):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (20:27):
And he's got a CD collection all arrows, all kinds
of Arrowsmith and everything else does not have.
Speaker 3 (20:33):
The Eagle's Greatest Hits.
Speaker 2 (20:34):
Well after my.
Speaker 1 (20:36):
Date dad for the holiday holiday holiday, No, anybody listened
to the Eagles greatest Hits? I don't know, really, I
don't know anybody like, let's listen to the Eagles great Okay?
Speaker 3 (20:45):
Sure, a witch a woman? Which? Oh witch?
Speaker 1 (20:48):
A woman?
Speaker 3 (20:49):
Which a woman?
Speaker 1 (20:50):
Well, Desperado, I know, bat out of Hell is still
top ten. I already have a song Elane well bat
bat it. Well? People still you hear Paradise by the
dashboard light all the time? You out of surprising and
put that up in stranger things. Some people still listen
to me. Well, that was seventies. So yeah, they get
no love. As much as I try to evangelize, I
(21:13):
got nothing.
Speaker 5 (21:13):
You know.
Speaker 1 (21:13):
That is you know, in speaking of people that I know.
You know Ryan McGee who writes for ESPN. Harmon has
all the album he does every week he does the
bottom ten list, like the worst ten teams in college football.
They're always the worst, but just seems up the worst
losses like that. That that's where the Afghan Wigs are.
They're in the bottom ten or the bottom ten here,
bottom ten. Highly disrespectful and just wrong headed. But you're
(21:39):
entitled to your opinion. You're the guy keeping You're the
one that said you're the guy keeping the Afghan Wigs
in business. They wouldn't even be erratic, categorically untrue. Harmon
keeps buying stuff our kick. Can we put out more
T shirts with something different because Harmon keeps bothering global act.
We're popular here, Mike Harmon and in Hungary that's where
(22:02):
we really make all our money.
Speaker 3 (22:03):
So horribly disrespectful.
Speaker 1 (22:07):
Uh now, let's get to a big head coaching fail
from today.
Speaker 3 (22:13):
There in jets where we stay high least.
Speaker 1 (22:16):
Understand that where I can't get over the epic fail.
That has been the Penn State head coaching situation today.
They get they get turned down, and it's it's it's
too It's a double barrel embarrassing story for Penn State
today because first we find out that they're recruiting class
because the people who decommitted after the firing of James Franklin.
(22:39):
We find out their recruiting class is now right, like
what one oh fifth, one tenth in the country, Like,
how this is Penn bleep and State man and your
recruits one tenth? This is not Syracuse, this is not
this is it's not Miami of Ohio.
Speaker 3 (22:56):
This is this is this is.
Speaker 4 (22:59):
Uh flip this commitment from Penn State to Virginia Tech.
Speaker 3 (23:03):
Defensive end, Yeah another defensive end, say not so fast.
Speaker 1 (23:07):
So missus had some guys as well, but from Penn State,
it's just been a laundry list of evils since James
frank James Franklin was let go. Now that's embarrassing enough,
but you at least thought they were gonna get their
new head coach today because you thought Koloney Sataki from
BYU was going to mushroom his way over to Happy Valley.
See what I did that, but Inoki happened because he
(23:31):
decides to stay at BYU. Sataki uses Penn State as
leverage to stay at BYU. Think about that epic fail
for a second, that I'm staying at BYU rather than
go Penn State. This is supposed to be a great job. Nope,
(23:53):
I'm staying at BYU. This is so incredibly embarrassing. This
is such an epic fail. And the reason this is
a fail is not what's been reported. Because James Franklin failed. Okay,
and you've heard the past few weeks with the way
things have gone for Penn State. Oh, James Franklin is
still the best head coach of Penn State.
Speaker 3 (24:12):
Blah blahlah.
Speaker 1 (24:12):
Yeah, whatever. James Franklin, his time was coming to an end.
Why did he get fired. He get fired because suddenly
the administration said, oh, things are going so bad, we
got to get rid of it.
Speaker 3 (24:24):
Gradorigt No.
Speaker 1 (24:24):
At that point, when you lose to UCLA and all
these things happen, your season's over. But when you got
to the later part of September, you started seeing reports that, hey,
nil backers not happy, spend a lot of money to
get Drew Alla to come back. This year, spend a
lot of money to get some guys come back this
year because hey, James Franklin, hey we have a national
(24:47):
championship caliber team, right and he was coaching in overtime
against Oregon and this is one of the biggest games
of the year, and then two weeks later lost to
UCLA and then.
Speaker 3 (24:57):
He was fired.
Speaker 1 (24:59):
The real power brokers in college football, I'm not the ads.
It's not the governor of the state team, though the
governor can get in and muck things up as well
as everybody. But the real power brokers are the nil
backers because they're the ones that say, this guy is out. Oh,
James fred this is embarrassing, like it's it. You picture
it like the like you picture every every nil guy,
(25:21):
like Buddy Garretty from Friday Night Lights, where he's got
a big car dealership, he's got all money going.
Speaker 6 (25:25):
We better win Friday Night Eric, or I can't guarantee
your job, right, Like this is who moves everything, because
they're the ones that say, hey, if you don't replace
the coach, I'm not giving you any money.
Speaker 1 (25:38):
And the school needs the money because okay, we can
not have the coach, but we can't not have the money.
So Penn State, I'm sure got panicked with Okay, all
this money, all the nil backers, they all came in
with money to keep this roster going and it didn't happen.
They're all pissed, man, because I get it, because you're
emotional when you spend money and you're watching Penn State
(25:59):
go out and lose. That way you get rid of
James Franklin. This is what happens when you get rid
of a head coach and you don't have another plan
in place. I mean, even LSU the absolute tire fire.
They were were firing Brian Kelly. All this money do
they got Lane Kiffin?
Speaker 7 (26:14):
Right?
Speaker 1 (26:14):
They got they got the head coach. They won, right,
They they went out and got him because they have
the money going. So why you're able to do it? Lsu, Hey,
we'll find a way. We'll buy out Brian Kelly. We'll
get the money for Lane Kiffin. But when the nil
backers are the ones that have all the power and
and and I'm not saying this is something that that
that absolutely Hey, this happens everywhere, but you know that
(26:35):
this is a conversation that goes on behind closed doors
about Hey, this coach. If this coach isn't here, we're
not giving you guys any money, right, So you know
that that I could sit here and say, well, when
you decide to get rid of a head coach, because
of whatever external pressure that you have, sometimes you don't
have that plan. And that's why you are where you
are in your Penn state and this is where they
(26:56):
are right now.
Speaker 4 (26:56):
Yeah, it was always there with the rubber chicken dinners
and and the handshakes and you know, photo ops and
all of those things right access to the program and
people being around it. I just think back to the
days from a basketball side when I was at Northwestern
and the Indiana machine would come in right and you'd
(27:17):
have all these folks.
Speaker 3 (27:18):
Lining where the Indiana locker room would let out.
Speaker 4 (27:21):
Players would start coming out, and they're all waiting to
just kiss Bob Knight's ass. He would sneak out the
other side, head down and walk as fast as he could.
And one time I actually did that walk with him.
He was like he came out of the other I'm like,
oh my god, he's over here, and he's like, just
keep walking, don't say anything. Just you signed a ball
for me. We're talking and then people realized, oh, coach
(27:44):
just got on the bus, so they were all mad
because they didn't get their moment to shake his hand
and whatever. So it's always there, but it was always
in facilities, whenever the coach whatever. Now it's back more
explicitly in what's going on the field, not to mention
the facilities, the new stadiums and new skyboxes whatever else.
But yeah, there's only so many payments that are gonna made.
(28:05):
The LSU think gets even weirder because the Brian Kelly
they were gonna fight it and then all of a
sudden it begins. All right, it's just get miss fifty
four million dollars to make it go away. So I
still want to know some of those conversations. But to
your point, yeah, I mean they're the brokers. Ultimately, you've
got people in charge that quote make the decisions. But
all you have to do is, you know, turn that money,
(28:25):
spick it off, and the whole institution fails, right because
football feeds so many other programs, not just athletics, and
it's a trickle down effect to a university. As much
as people bemoan its existence in a lot of places,
you realize you know how the sausage is made. You
may not like it, but yeah, that football money turns off.
Speaker 3 (28:46):
It's an ugly thing.
Speaker 4 (28:47):
And for Penn State, it's one thing if James Franklin
was continuing to lose the top five teams, A lot
of coaches do that. A lot of coaches struggle with that,
and it's a stigma. It's another thing to where you're
getting embarrassed by UCLA who just run its coach out
of town, right, and you're left standing in the field
looking around as ninety thousand people have their arms extended, going,
(29:07):
what do.
Speaker 5 (29:08):
You mean.
Speaker 1 (29:10):
Exit out bout a Fresco exit swallowing down The Jason
Smith Show with my best friend Mike Carmon, Tom go
to find out what's trending in the wide world of sports.
But guy has been called the James Franklin of Fox
Sports Radio because he's interviewing to be the Penn State
head coach.
Speaker 3 (29:24):
Tomoral, it's Steve to say that I.
Speaker 7 (29:26):
Thought it had something to do with the bank account.
Clearly not the case. Shay Gilles Alexander of OKC had

winner at La Colorado three to one over Vancouver. Islanders
beat Tampa Bay two to one, and the Rangers at
(30:32):
home got an overtime victory against Dallas three to two.
The Blue Jays gave a three year contract to right
handed pitcher Cody Ponce, former Pirate MVP of the Korean
League this past year. Detroit Lyons wide receiver Aman Ross
Saint Brown did not practice again sprained ankle. Detroit plays
this Thursday, hosting Dallas. The Steelers claimed wide receiver Adam
(30:53):
Thielen off waivers from Minnesota and Pittsburgh Wave defensive back
Darius Slay. The coltswave kicker Michael bade Lee and signed
Blake GROUPIEX of New Orleans. By the way, kicker Justin
Tucker also tried out for that job.
Speaker 1 (31:06):
So TJ Groupie is back with the band after a
week away.
Speaker 7 (31:10):
Dj and the NFL says this month's Packers at Bear's
game will be on a Saturday night, December twentieth.
Speaker 3 (31:17):
They did not note that it will.

Kalanie Sataki got a long term extension to stay despite
the interest from Penn State. Texas Tech gave coach Joey
McGuire a new seven year contract. There was a college
