Jason and Mike sound off on Trey Lance after the QB had a rough day at San Francisco 49ers training camp. Kyler Murray is the guy the Arizona Cardinals want him to be that he likely isn't.  And Jason can’t understand why the Seattle Seahawks are signing DK Metcalf for the next three years when they're rebuilding and most likely going to stink.

You're listening to Fox Sports Radio Fontio, the faun font
font Fox Sports Radio, The Jason Smith Show with my
best friend Mike Harmon. Happy Hour four, Uh, big coming up.
Oh it's always a happy hour, but big nfl our

(00:46):
coming up. And uh, just to spend because we you know,
I think we're gonna have to spend a couple of
minutes on this every day because how trade Lance does
every single day and practice in the preseason is going
to be a front paide story. And apparent early today
was not a good day for Trey Land. And you're
not complete a lot of passes. He threw an interception
directly to a dB suddenly Now, oh, Trey Land stinks.

(01:10):
It's an awful look. As much as not being a
fan or a believer in Trey Lance, as other people
are because if he was that good the Niners, this
would not be even a topic with Jimmy Garoppolo. They
would be standing up front saying he's great, wait till
you see him play. Look, but I'm not gonna sit
there after day one and say all the guy's done,

(01:30):
the guy's he's terrible. At this point, At this point
in in training camp, defenses are always ahead of the offense.
Is the only offenses that are ahead are teams like
the Packers, where their quarterbacks been in place for a
long time and they can kind of but even the
Packers struggle because now Aaron Rodgers has to get used
to new receivers. But normally, at this point, the defense

(01:50):
is ahead of the offense. So, you know, even though
it's not, it's not great news for Trey Lance. A
day after, the Niners tell Jimmy Garoppolo, hey, we're we're
going with tray and and you know you're not gonna
be around the team. Tray Lands has an awful day.
It's a really bad optic, but you know, give me,
give me a few days before suddenly it's hey, okay,
now we're we're we're legit talking about Trey Land struggling

(02:11):
and training camp, you know what I mean. I like
the chaos included therein and so all the tracking for
every quarterback. Oh, in the red zone, he was only
one of four and he grossly overthrew a guy in
the back of the end zone. All of the I'm
all here, all for it. Let's go. Let's keep score
of all the completion percentages during these drills unless we don't.

(02:35):
You know, I do like the fact that because they
need to be described, because you can't just see them
right like normally, you know during NFL game, when when
someone's tweeting something out about a game, you can see
the play, so you know, SnO one has to tweet out.
But every interception that is thrown in training camp is
either an unbelievably horrendous mistake by the quarterback, or it's

(02:58):
a it's an un real athletic play made by the
defensive back, or they're the mistakes are tremendous. They're not
just mistakes, not just we're misfiring out of play. Now
everything is really amped up because nobody knows because no
one watches every single play. No one watches a seven
on seven drills, So we have to deal with and
and and rely on the people who are there, the

(03:19):
beat reporters and everything else. And notice how more so
than the regular season, every bad play is magnified. This
quarterback was horrendous in these in the red zone deals.
They were they were completed one out of six passes. Like, okay,
that's six plays. We're talking about six plays, right where
six places we're talking all right, We're not talking about
thirty plays. We're talking about six plays. Everything is is

(03:41):
so amped up. You're seeing it in Pittsburgh, You'll see
it in Seattle, obviously, down in Carolina, every autograph signed,
every smile, every cheer from the crowd is magnified on
a whole other level. And when we talk about the
great expectations for the squad, right when you look at
the the entirety of the roster and what people think

(04:05):
can be the ceiling, it's it's sept pretty high. Except
for now. Trey Lance is the ultimate wild card in everything.
And if it depends which decide of the side of
the leaked reports, you like, right, is he either the
next coming and just this raw and this great talent,
or he can't hit the broadside of a barn and

(04:28):
this is a disaster waiting to happen, and depending on
which side you came into it, the poison pen comes out,
or everything's light and fluffy and it's somebody else's fault
with each errant throw, missed connection, et cetera. So we're
keeping an eye Entree Lance, as we will throughout the

(04:49):
entire preseason. But today was really about Kyler Murray, and
Murray started the day the Cardinals quarterback by having an
impromptu press conference talk for a little over ten min
about how ridiculous it is that we're spending so much
time talking about this independent study clause in his NFL
contract two thirty million dollar extension, hundred and sixty million

(05:12):
of it, which is guaranteed it's gonna make forty five
million dollars a year. But it's been pretty embarrassing for
him and the Cardinals that the Cardinals had to put
in a clause it says, hey, you gotta work a
little extra harder, and Murray wanted to make sure that
we knew, Hey, I think I worked pretty hard when
he spoke earlier today. But I do enjoy and love
the process of watching the game with my guys quarterbacks,

(05:35):
my coaches, you know that's and I think you can
ask any quarterback around the league. You know, the calmaradoe
in that room, the passion that goes into it. Every
man in that room has a job. Every man contributes,
and you know in different ways. Okay, now just think
about that for a second. Right, I'm watching with my
guys in the quarterback room. This is what I'm doing. Right.
I watched film, this story kind of evolved, and we

(05:57):
expected to say one thing coming on a show tonight,
but then the Cardinals surprise everybody by saying, oh, yeah,
we're taking that clause out of his contract. Now. Uh,
you know, it's really not hit the way we thought
it was gonna hit, and boy, it's embarrassing for him. Yeah.
So now we're showing everybody that we're a dumpster fire.
So we're gonna take this out too late. The damage

(06:19):
has been done. And no matter what Kyler Murray says,
he disagrees with the fact that he people don't think
he prepares. Let me just get into exactly what this
is all about, and I'll tell you why the Cardinals
put this clause in. For a second. Do I think
Kyler Murray doesn't practice hard when he's there, of course,
not that he doesn't pay attention when he's watching film
with the guys at the facility. No, you're paying attention.

(06:43):
But this is practice. This is what you're supposed to do.
This falls under the category of when you come to
the facility and we go through practice. It's some on
the field, some off the field, some of it sitting
with your teammates, some of it's watching film in the
quarterback room. This falls to the category of practice. Now,
you're special because you get forty five million dollars a

(07:05):
year to be the quarterback. Um, there's pressures and there's
responsibilities that go along with that for a quarterback who's
a franchise guy making that money. Your time as a
quarterback doesn't end when you leave the facility. And what
the Cardinals are saying is that we need you to
do more when you're not here, because look at the

(07:26):
best quarterbacks in the league that get paid a lot
of money. Do you think Tom Brady finishes practice and
watch this film and then goes home and just does
nothing the rest of the night. Yeah, back at practice throw. No,
he's watching film, he's he's he's doing other things. When
it comes to his preparation, He is working out with receivers,
He does all these things. What do you think quarterbacks

(07:47):
do they go home and watch film? Hey, take this
home and go watch it. Right. We saw the big
story this week about JaMarcus Russell that gained a lot
of attention again when two coaches to give him blank
um DVDs to go home and watch and he said, yes,
I watched him and they know full well he didn't
go watch them. There are things you need to do
as a quarterback away from the facility because you're the

(08:07):
quarterback and you're getting paid that kind of money, and
you need to make sure, because you touch the football
on every bleep in play, that you are as ready
for what's in front of you as you can be
because how you go, our team goes. So there's something
extra that comes along with being a quarterback. And this
is why the Cardinals wanted to put this in the clause. Hey,

(08:27):
you gotta work hard away from the field. To man,
you gotta work a little bit harder, and we haven't
seen that the last couple of years. Yes, you rely
on your physical ability, and he has said in the past,
I don't watch as much film because I can see
what happens on the play. I'd like to see it
evolve on the field. Um, it doesn't mean you don't
have to watch film. And so what they want from
him is, hey, grow and be a quarterback, be the

(08:48):
leader we're paying you like a franchise quarterback. I don't
know that he gets what it means to be a
franchise quarterback in the NFL. I don't know that he
gets exactly what the responsibility and what he needs to
be doing away from the field that goes into being
a quarterback. You see it all the time with guys
and I'm I'm cutting my summer vacation short and I'm

(09:08):
going to going to Utah to go throw with a
bunch of guys and I'm bringing all my receivers and
so we can have some time in bonding time together.
And there's different things that different quarterbacks do. But the
ones that want to be great, the ones that want
to justify and earn the money they're getting, Yeah, they
do things above and beyond outside of practice. And that's
that's the thing that I look at Kyler Murray and go,

(09:31):
that's what the Cardinals want from him. They want him
not to be a guy that punches a clock and
then goes home and says, yeah, I'm good, I'm gonna
rely on my ability to win games. No, they want
him to go and learn what it means to really
be an elite level quarterback and do the things the
other great quarterbacks do. Because I'm sorry, you can say, well,
I'm the practices over forty five million dollars a year.
I don't think it's outside the realm of of what's

(09:53):
acceptable to say, hey, we need you to do a
little bit more away from the field so you're ready
for what goes on Sunday. Well, and that's the thing
is that for Kyler Murray, And it's part of the
argument made since this started to become public and even
going into the off season, when it was the question
of if when, what's the number that they ultimately agree to,
is he's a guy that's achieved great things at every

(10:14):
level that he's played, so suddenly saying we've got to change,
we've got to augment, we've got to tweak the formula,
i e. How you've prepared physically mentally and what you've
done in film review, etcetera. The fact that we are
talking about and changing that that that's a big blow

(10:35):
because that means you're not good enough versus for some
for others, it's the I'm always hungry, always improving. Where
are we falling short? And that's where I guess the
gap is in the communication of this which required and
necessitated a clause to show up in that iteration of
the contract that everybody talked about and agreed to. So

(10:56):
all of the outrage from Murray getting to the podium today,
like nobody's saying you didn't work this, just you didn't
work smarter, work harder, show them that we we invested
all this money and that you're going to put forth
the extra effort to take this team from where you are,
which is in a pretty good spot right. Roster's in

(11:19):
in pretty decent shape. Offensive line still a bit of
a question mark, and relying on James Conner uh full
time is a bit difficult. Probably more goal line guys,
so we'll see more of Eno Benjamin, but that remains
to be seen. But you're looking at at a guy
that in year four they're expecting to take another leap

(11:39):
and to be in the second half winning games. Now
part of it that I'd love to see some of
the clause that should be in Cliff Kingsbury stuff. Uh,
if we're gonna go down this road with Kyler Murray,
because that he's the other guy that you've got to
look at and say, all right, you've gotta work harder
and smarter as well. But the quarterback is the one
that wears it. And so for Kyler Murray this becomes

(12:03):
a much bigger issue. And now the magnifying glass will
beyond him with every throw, every decision that he makes,
every error he makes. It's gonna be you know, people
are gonna be super sleothing to go back to old
defensive structures and sets from games in the past. You know,
in week three they showed the same defensive look. Kyler

(12:24):
should have seen that if he'd been watching his tape.

a big time contract extension. The guy's worth it. I'm

(27:21):
Radio and the I Heart Radio app. Did you see today?
Draymond Green's mom, Mary was very upset on social media
as she reacted to the reports that Draymond wants a
MAX deal from the Warriors, and we talked about this
last night, and nobody wants to give it to him.
And she went back and clapped back a lot at
people who said Draymond doesn't deserve the maximum. One of

(27:43):
her tweets quote, a lot of you were saying he
shouldn't get MAX. But guys that hasn't won anything get
bread based off potential. Uh. And then she also went
on to say that, hey, if he comes back to Detroit,
where he's from, uh, he takes his talents there. Quote.
I'm a Piston pan for life, hit Piston fan for life.

(28:04):
Green gonna look nice in the Pistons jersey. First of all,
I thought you were gonna start sparks in it up. No, no, no, no,
no, no no. For first of all, your Pistons. First of all,
if I was Draymond, I would say, Mom, Mom, okay,
I get let's not get carried away. I'm not going
to the No, I'll take a little bit less to

(28:27):
stick around here. I'll go I'll go back. I'll go
back to coach of Michigan State before I go back
to the to the Pistons. All right, I'm not going
to the pistons. Don't put that out there, Mom, I
don't want to three and fifty nine. No, no, no, no, no, no,
don't don't. Don't put the pistons out there. Mom. I
got people who can take care of that for me.
But you know the thing is is that I see

(28:48):
all the you know that, and she's she's going back
and forth with people who are trolling her, and I'm like,
you just gotta let that go, you know. And he
was a mom once. Moms in mom's in you know,
I get it, I get it. And and the criticism
she's getting, you know, people are saying he doesn't deserve
and she's going crazy. Now, Look, do I think Draymond
Green deserves the max? No, But of course his mom

(29:09):
is gonna say he deserves the max. It's his mom.
It would be news if she would have said, oh, Draymond,
you're two old man, thirty four, you quit for a
couple of years. It just played good this year, and
you're not getting the max. Man, Hey, you get a
podcasting max. But you're not getting a max here. No,
of course this is her son. Of course she's gonna
say my son should get a maximum contract. Look what

(29:30):
he's done. Look what he means to the team. This
is weird, mom, I mean I I know it's weird
because we're used to a world of like Zach Wilson's mom,
who was using Zach Wilson's fame just to create her
own level of fame. Uh, this is this is Traymond's
mom just having fun saying, hey, yeah, of course he
should get the maximum. It's my kid, give him the maximum.

(29:50):
I'm all for it, all four moms. Like she's been
part of this for a long time. This is nothing new,
not unexpected at all. She would chime in here the
fact that she she raised the Pistons as an altered Yeah. Yeah,
the Lakers, right, Like if she had said, hey, he

(30:11):
could go win with Lebron at the Lakers know that,
because that's what Draymond said yesterday was if if they
don't pay me, I could go. Like that's a threat
saying he would look nice with the Pistons. That's not
a threat. That's that's where the Warriors saying, Okay, we
can figure out a deal. You want to get to
the Pistons, he can get it. I mean, look, you

(30:33):
always want family clothes, and it'd be nice to have
family dinner. What he's got a home game, right, you
can come and and sit and watch the afternoon soaps,
maybe some game shows, and and then head to the
arena after, you know, for for that night's activities. I
like that certainly. Or if it's a tough game, you
don't have to go, like if you're if you're playing

(30:54):
the Bucks, it's like, oh, you know, I don't want
to go. We're gonna get killed tonight. I'm just gonna
say home and hang with my mom. Okay, cool. I'm
gonna be a lot of those nights, a lot of
bonding time with mom. Then hey, we're playing the Knicks. No,
I gotta go to this one, Mom, we actually have
a chance we might be able to win this one.
I got, I gotta go to this game. Uh so, yes,

(31:14):
I I completely get uh Mary talking you know, talking up.
I get it. I get it now. The other story
that again has some hef to it. Zion Williamson has
a clause in his contract that he's got to study
film for now. He's got He's got a weight clause
in his new contract where he could lose guaranteed money

(31:38):
if he does not keep the sum of his weight
and body fat below to right. This is not a
weight thing. This is Zion Williamson has to have the
sum of his weight and body fat percentage be below
to and if he doesn't do that, well then he's
gonna lose some money off his new deal. Right now,

(31:59):
he's right now, he's listening to two four pounds, but
then you've got body fat going along with it. The
one thing I've said about him from the beginning was
he's gonna do whatever the hell he wants to in
the NBA. He's awesome, but his weight is a thing.
The guy's twenty one years old and the guys three
hundred pounds. He's the second heaviest guy in the NBA already.
That's gonna be a very very big deal. Right The
guy already had a shoe explode on him. All kinds

(32:21):
of things have happened. He's had a tough time staying healthy.
His weight is a really really big deal. So here
he is. You gotta keep that combo under tow or
he loses money. Well, now, it's a question of you
know which photos you believe of the real Zion Williamson.
Right now, either he's ripped and ready to go, or
if you get the right angle and the jersey's hanging

(32:43):
off just right. He he looks like he hasn't seen
the inside of a gym. It's like like those pictures
you would see boys Jamis Winston heavy or you know,
I just got the rope around his uh, his waist.
It's a different way, you know, pulling him for the drill. Oh, okay,
that's what it is. Yeah, So we'll see obviously cheering
for him because when he's on the cord, he's electric,

(33:05):
and the Pelicans have a really good core. That could
be very interesting in the in the Western Conference. If
he's sound. Yeah, look if if he is, this is
a team that looked like they had a little something
something going on last year without him, and it would
be it's gonna be really interesting to see. Can they
take a big step? Can they take a Memphis Grizzlies

(33:25):
like step? If he comes and he plays and he's healthy,
for I don't want to see eighty two games is
a lot to ask. Adam Silver's on his knees saying
prayers right now for that. He's Zion John. Let's go, Hey,
it's Taylor. Prayers all your little zion maniacs are able
to say your prayers and you come play trains. Say
your prayers at Eat your vitamins, baby,
