Speaker 2 (00:23):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
That was Alex Tyshirt emptying the chamber of all the
dropsy hat.

Speaker 3 (00:33):
That is not true at all. Just gonna keep playing it, Jason.
I can do a whole segment if you'd like, ah
challenge me.

Speaker 4 (00:40):
That's the we lit some fireworks on and the whole
thing went up, and you saw the guy in the
little orange outfit go running.

Speaker 5 (00:47):
To the hills because he was scared out of his mind.

Speaker 1 (00:51):
We're live for the Tiraq dot com Studios direct dot com.
I'll help you get there at unmatt selection fast free shipping,
Free road has a protection and over ten thousand recommended it.
Tyraq dot com is the way tire buying should be well. Tonight,
three games in the NFL. Three big stories. We talked
about the Texans a few minutes ago. Now a couple
of quarterbacks to get to making their respective debuts, and

(01:15):
I'm telling you ignore the drama and how fast things
are gonna go sideways with the Atlanta Falcons at quarterback
at your own peril. Right coming into this year, everything
was fine. The Falcons were the smartest team in the world.
We're gonna give Kirk Cousins all kinds of money for
the next four years. We're gonna draft Michael Pennix Junior

(01:36):
in the top ten, doesn't matter.

Speaker 6 (01:37):
He's gonna sit.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
He can sit just like Jordan Love for a couple
of years, three years Cousins who went MVPs, doesn't matter.

Speaker 6 (01:44):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:44):
Then shortly after the Falcons realized, oh, this is the
real world and that was a stupid strategy. So understanding
that I think at this point, coming into tonight's game,
the Falcons thought, Okay, well, Kirk Cousins will play this
year and then probably will train him in the offseason.

Speaker 6 (02:00):
That's fine. We have Michael Pennick junior. He could be great.

Speaker 1 (02:03):
Will trade Cousin, someone's gonna want him. He's still a
really good quarterback. Well, they are not prepared for the
blank show. They're gonna inherit the middle of this season,
if not sooner. Pennick Junior makes his debut tonight, and
it's not because Michael Penick Junior was great tonight. You know,
watching him play, he was fine his first NFL action.

(02:23):
I always look and see is the game too big
for somebody? And it wasn't. He made some nice throws
right that nice thirty yard throw down along the along
the seam, but he also missed a lot of throws
high right. Nine out of sixteen for one hundred and
four yards. Nine out of sixteen isn't a great completion
percentage in the NFL. But this is not about where,
oh he's ready. He's not ready to say, no, okay,

(02:45):
he's nervous his first game.

Speaker 6 (02:46):
I get it.

Speaker 1 (02:47):
You missed the receivers high it's fine. But you saw
the reaction to Michael Pennix after he played tonight, and
you saw immediately what was being said about him on
social media and and on and on and what went
on virally and here's all his highlights and he was
the biggest story of the night. If you think Michael

(03:08):
Pennick Junior isn't playing by the midway point of the season.

Speaker 6 (03:12):
You're crazy.

Speaker 1 (03:13):
I'm looking at the ESPN recap saying, well, Michael Pennix.

Speaker 6 (03:16):
June had a great debut.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
Well he's not gonna have to worry about playing for
a year because they have Kirk Cousins.

Speaker 6 (03:22):
No, no, no, no, no, You're just insane if you think that.

Speaker 1 (03:24):
And I don't mean from an injury perspective, I mean
look at the desire to see him play already after
one preseason game. Where do you think that's gonna be
by the beginning of the season, When when fans and
the media and players start desiring to see a guy
play because hey, Pennick Junior has been great in practice,

(03:45):
all the Falcons players say is how great he's been. Meanwhile,
Kirk Cousins a week ago was still mad they drafted
Michael Pennick Junior. Is to have the mental toughness to
be able to be able to have a season where Okay,
I can look over my shoulder at a guy knowing
want to give him the job and still go out
there and play great. Is Kirk Cousins that kind of guy?
If he's still upset going into the season, that's probably

(04:08):
not gonna happen. And the more time that goes on,
and the more great reports you get from Michael Pennick Junior,
the more you hear it every day from the fans
and the media. It seeps into the locker room, it
seeps into the coaches room when the guy, Hey, the
guy's doing knits at practice.

Speaker 6 (04:23):
He's doing nitsid practice.

Speaker 1 (04:24):
He's running the second team offense against the first team defense,
and he's doing great. Right, That's been a great report
for Michael Penick Junior over the course of the past
couple of weeks. That's what he's been doing since he
came to camp. You really think he ain't gonna play?
I mean this is you think Kirk Cousins. People think
Kirk Cousins Michael Penick Junior. Oh, well, they'll figure it
o after this year. No, this is much closer to
a Russell Wilson justin field situation than anybody wants to believe.

(04:48):
The minute Kirk Cousins gets cold for a couple of weeks,
they're gonna have to go to Michael Penick Junior. The
desire from everyone is gonna be too great to overcome,
and the Falcons are gonna go, wow, we re didn't
read this the right way. We really didn't see this.
Maybe now we kind of have.

Speaker 6 (05:04):
To do it.

Speaker 1 (05:04):
The players want it, the fans want it, mainly the players.
The players want it, the fans want it, coaches want
to say it. So, yeah, we kind of have to
do it. We don't know about kirk Cousins, how strong
he is mentally. Can he bounce out of this? How
can we wait for them to bounce out of this?
So we're one and four right now. Can we continue
to go with him or do need some spark? And
Michael Pennix Junior is our guy, Like, this is what
the Falcons have bought. And if anybody thinks this is

(05:27):
not going to rear its head before the middle of
the season, you're insane. This could be a week five,
week six thing. If kirk Cousins starts out slow, that's
how fast they will go to Michael Pennix Junior.

Speaker 4 (05:38):
Well, it all comes down to reports are it's a
bit of an erratic kind of performance from Pennis day
to day. Right, you have the spectacular at the forty
one yard reception, fantastic throw, fantast agree and then he
overshoots guys, And that's a lot of what you've seen
out of practice notes and again I'm not seeing every

(06:00):
ap he's taking, but as we know, we we get
really detailed reports of you know what his body languages
after every throw in a practice anymore, but coming.

Speaker 6 (06:10):
Out of the But you're also talking.

Speaker 1 (06:12):
It's August ninth, and another another month of progress. He's
been a camp a couple week and already he's doing
this where's it gonna be in a month?

Speaker 6 (06:19):
Where where's that good?

Speaker 1 (06:21):
Because everybody but he doesn't do well? So what if
he if he threw eleven straight interceptions? Boy, he threw
that great twenty yard out. Yeah, that was a great
pass right there.

Speaker 6 (06:31):
But that's but that's.

Speaker 4 (06:32):
The way you're you're gonna treat it with kid gloves here, right,
And then the big thing for Arthur Blank is you
spent all this money on Kirk Cousins, banking on him
to come back in his rehab and for him, I
don't know how much whining he's done as opposed to
all right, here's the first chance that I get to
ask him that question, right, Because everybody wants their byline

(06:54):
and their voice over a ask answer with kirk Cousins
related to the panic, So rival so so I take
it with a little bit of a grain as salt am,
I worried about his health. Yeah, he's an above thirty
five year old quarterback coming off with significant injury. Now
he's got one of the best offensive lines in the
league and a compliment of skill position players. Remember Bjeon

(07:16):
Robinson hardly got touched in twenty twenty three, much to
the chagrin of fantasy owners who drafted him in the
top what five to seven picks in most leagues. But
out of the gate you got the Steelers. We'll get
to them in a minute. You're on the road at
the Eagles, and then you have the Chiefs. Those are
your first three games, so certainly potential for a lot
of chaos and the signaling of an impending doom. So yeah,

(07:40):
you could start calling for Captain Kirk, and I'm sure
there'd be suitors for him as long as he's still
upright and moving. This is where we get into the
fun and excitement of how much money will I eat
if I don't want to do because you know you're
not gonna want to have both, like, because you can't
send Kirk to the bench and expect you know that
everything's gonna be fine and dandy. So you know, at

(08:02):
that point, Falcons are having little voodoo dolls of other
teams quarterbacks hoping that the trade market suddenly opens up. Yeah,
you'll have to eat some money and you'll have a
bunch of dead cap, but yeah, you can go to
the rookie and as we always talk about dollar cost
averaging based on your rookie not costing you a ton
of money, and you can go down that road. So yeah,

(08:24):
I get the desire to see Michael Pennix junior out there,
but Captain Kirk's really gonna have to suck for that
to happen soon. I'm not saying it won't, but I
think the division's bad enough that you're not gonna fall off.
Now if I haven't looked at their schedule in full,
but if it's as dopey as some of these others
to where you don't play any of your division games

(08:46):
till week twelve, then hey, who knows, all bets are off?
But because they see several of those, you know, because
we've seen that, I'm like, look, the schedule makers suck. Okay,
I get it, it's a lot of moving parts, but
the fact that you may have a bunch of divisions
decided by the fact that, yeah, our guys didn't get
hurt before week thirteen. We're great because now we have

(09:09):
all our division games. That that's not how a season
should go.

Speaker 1 (09:13):
Okay, well, first of all, before I get to the game,
because that's that's actually a big part of when you
look at what their schedule is is that this is
Kirk Cousins. Now, okay, just think about this now, Okay,
that that's the Michael Pennocks party, the equation. This is
Kirk Cousins coming off a devastating injury, sure with a
new team that he's trying to figure out his way,
that he is still upset that the team drafted a

(09:37):
guy to take over for him. Is he really upset
though nobody he's talked about it, even a week ago
that he was talking about it.

Speaker 4 (09:43):
Well, but he was asked about it. There's this difference
between responding to it. But at this point, it's done.
At this point, say it's done, it's done. I'm here,
this is what it is. But you know Cousins, Cousins
looks like.

Speaker 1 (09:54):
Hey, as far as guys go, he's on the sensitive side,
right he's this is something that's.

Speaker 6 (09:59):
Going to affect him. Obviously it did.

Speaker 1 (10:01):
I know you like to always say, hey, strap it
up and go play. Not everybody's like that, And I
don't know if Kirk Cousins is like that. And the
main part is that if Kirk Cousins comes in here
coming off a devastating injury and mentally he's not where
he needs to be to start this season, he's not
all in. Guess what, He's not gonna play well, right,
it's not gonna happen. And you look at where their

(10:22):
season starts off. First game, they're hosting Pittsburgh. Now I'm
a big fan of Hey Cousins versus Russell Wilson, loser
loses their job, Like you just said, the backup comes in.
Whoever loses that game, to be, if Cousins loses, Pendix
takes over. If the Steelers lose, then Fields takes over.
I'm a big fan of that. But coming off of
that game, you're at Philadelphia, Kansas City, New Orleans, and

(10:45):
then Tampa Bay, one of the best defenses in the league. Like,
that's your first five weeks of the NFL season. This
is where you could be staring at one and four
and you're saying, man one in four, I don't know,
what do we need to do? And if Kirk Cousins,
if they're not losing every game thirty one thirty and Cousin, Hey,
Cousins is three fifty and three touchdowns. If they're not

(11:05):
losing every game thirty one thirty. Guess what Week six,
it's a new quarterback. It's Michael Pennix Junior coming in.
It's gonna happen.

Speaker 5 (11:11):
You just hate Kirk Cousins.

Speaker 6 (11:13):
I don't.

Speaker 1 (11:14):
I'm just the reality of what sensible the situation was gonna.

Speaker 6 (11:18):
Be and and where it's at. There's so many value.

Speaker 1 (11:20):
There's so many variants that that come into this in
variables that that I don't think people get. You know
when I see it right, Well, Michael Penix jor is
not gonna pay. Like in what world does a first
round quarterback that you draft in the top ten not
play sometime in the first season when you spent nine
hundred the other guy?

Speaker 6 (11:38):
When does that happen?

Speaker 1 (11:40):
Like when the Giants drafted Daniel Jones and David Gettlman said,
you know you might not need to play for three years?
What you know you should lose your job right now,
because I know you're not up for it, because there's
no way you just said a guy you traded up
to take it number two.

Speaker 4 (11:53):
Oo, let me ask you for three. Let me ask you.
Let me ask right now. Gettlemen are shame. Go ha ha,
there you go, Giants fans.

Speaker 5 (12:02):
How about that? Take that?

Speaker 6 (12:04):
Ok?

Speaker 1 (12:05):
Well you got, I will say, Shane, just because we
haven't had this season yet, So let's just did his
kid get to make any of the picks?

Speaker 4 (12:12):
We know we didn't take the first one? Did they
listen to the kid on the rest of it?

Speaker 1 (12:16):
I think I think his kid told Kirk to sign
with the Falcons. I think that was But look, it's
just this is not a garden variety season for Kirk Cousins.
Hey I'm back, this is my team, and now here's somebody. No,
he's got a new he's got a new location, a
new team, coming off of devastating injury, and he's never
had to play with someone looking over his shoulder. He

(12:37):
has always been the guy who, Hey, I'm the guy
coming up behind the other guy's shoulder, which he was
with RG three, or I'm the unquestioned guy like I
was in Minnesota the last few years, like that's it. Like, now,
all of a sudden, how do you handle this when oh,
here's what it is.

Speaker 6 (12:52):
Guess what.

Speaker 1 (12:52):
Hey, you come to practice. We love you, We love you.
And after a minute of looking in your eyes saying
that's cool. Hey, where's Mike, Hey, where's my hey?

Speaker 6 (12:58):
Mike? Hey, what's up? Man?

Speaker 1 (13:00):
That's a tough thing. That's a tough way to go
to practice every single day. So to think that this
is gonna be Yeah, Kirk Cousins is gonna be great,
and everything is gonna be great. Michael Pennick Union is
gonna play so and it's gonna edit. The falcons are
gonna go, oh my goodness, this is just a mess.
And part of it's gonna be because just human nature.
The falcons are gonna say, if we're questioning it all
whether or not to make this move, let's just make it.

(13:22):
Let's just make it so we don't postpone the future.
We're gonna go to it at some point. Let's just
do it now. Then we ridd We rid the locker room,
We rid this hanging over the team. We've made the
move to Michael Pennix Junior, and you know what, You'll
be able to spend Kirk Cousin off Kirk Cousins off
in the off season somewhere because he's still a really
good quarterback. Even if he doesn't play well to start
this season. It's okay, well coming back from injury all this,

(13:44):
we saw what he did. Hey, quarterbacks are at a premium.
I can see the Raiders saying, hey, man, hey Kirk,
come here, we'll take you.

Speaker 6 (13:50):
We need somebody we're.

Speaker 5 (13:51):
Not How should I wish with that roster?

Speaker 6 (13:54):
Oh, that'll completely happen.

Speaker 4 (13:56):
As much as I don't like Derek Carr, how much
do you think they wish they had Derek Carr with
the roster they love?

Speaker 6 (14:03):
I think they wish I had David Carr. That's how
bad they're Wow, there you go? Is that too? Same boy?

Speaker 5 (14:07):
He's got better hair, so you got that.

Speaker 4 (14:09):
But for Captain Kirk, just so you know, you've lay
in heavy odds because it's uh, his over underground touchdowns
is thirty.

Speaker 1 (14:17):
Oh yeah, I'll take the way under on that way

Speaker 1 (15:25):
Fox Sports Radio The Jason Smith Show with my best
friend Mike Harmon live from the tirerac dot Com studios,
and we'll get to the most shocking story of the
day easily in a couple of minutes. But the final
of the trio of Big NFL Stories from the game
tonight involves the Justin Fields debut for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Now,

(15:48):
take you back to what we said right after the
game was over. Justin Fields, who played a couple of
series and he looked fine. Right, Who's five out of
six throwing the football. He had a couple of nice runs.
He also fumbled twice.

Speaker 6 (15:59):
Right.

Speaker 1 (16:00):
The problem with the center quarterback exchange hard to know
who it's on. Although when they went to another center
in the next series, the Steelers stopped fumbling. However, what
I said about Justin Fields now is doubly true after
hearing Mike Tomlin speak following the game tonight, is that
what Justin Fields needs to do to win the quarterback job.
And look, they're gonna go to him eventually because Wilson

(16:21):
has washed. He needs to have a boring camp where
in games that he plays, he just makes the right plays. Right,
he doesn't need to wow. We know he has that
athletic ability and the runs he has and the big
throws he can make, but he's got to be able
to show, hey, I can be boring, meaning I can
hit the third receiver, I can dump it down and

(16:42):
check down if I need.

Speaker 6 (16:43):
To, I can make the right play.

Speaker 1 (16:45):
I know the value of a two yard scamper than
trying to do something big. He just hass to show
I know the offense and I can execute it.

Speaker 6 (16:52):
And then when I.

Speaker 1 (16:52):
Get in here and get comfortable, then you're gonna see
me make some wow plays. That's what he doesn't need
to wow everybody. He's someone that has shown plenty of while,
but it's the the every It's more the every down
stuff that fields needs to do.

Speaker 6 (17:06):
You can't.

Speaker 1 (17:06):
You can't have a quarterback who scrambles for twenty five yards.
Everything looks great, but then he takes two sacks in
a row because won't get rid of the football. He
just needs a show I can do it, and tonight
was a day where you could do that.

Speaker 6 (17:18):
Right. He showed I can be boring. No, he didn't
lead them to touchdowns, but.

Speaker 1 (17:21):
He still he threw the football well, checked out of
the receivers, scrambled what he needed to. It was great,
but he had the two fumbles. What that did was
that negated all the good that he did in this game.
Because Tomlin's got to know I can trust you, and
two fumbles in two drives ain't good.

Speaker 6 (17:39):
You're not getting around that.

Speaker 1 (17:41):
So all the good that Justin Fields did and all
the narrowing he's doing behind Russell Wilson, well, all that
momentum got thrown out the window because of the two fumbles.
It's like he had a zero sum game and his
chance to narrow the gap on Wilson is out the window.

Speaker 6 (17:56):
You don't believe me.

Speaker 1 (17:57):
Here's Mike Tomlin, who after we said it, met the
media and said, oh, yeah, that's Jason Smith. He's a
really smart guy.

Speaker 8 (18:04):
Yeah, he did some nice things, but obviously he was
a component of the CQ exchange, and from my perspective,
that's dual responsibility on the center and the quarterback. Indicated
a lot of good things going on in those first
couple of drives.

Speaker 6 (18:16):
I think one.

Speaker 8 (18:16):
Definitively got stopped by it. With the second and fourteen,
you get behind and change, particularly at the early stages before.

Speaker 6 (18:24):
You gain real cohesion and have enough.

Speaker 8 (18:26):
Of a menu to get you out of them circumstances
your dead group, and so the SEQ exchanges.

Speaker 6 (18:32):
Were an issue cohesion. Men, You go exactly, it's exactly
what we said.

Speaker 1 (18:39):
It's exactly what we said to hey, that's great and
especially because and here's the other thing why Justin Fields
needs to be needs to be doing it better and cleaner.
Is that you could tell by hearing Mike Tomlin talk
Russell Wilson is his guy, and Fields you gotta come
take it if you want it. Like it's all been
glowing stuff about Russell will that's great, yeah, Russell, But

(19:01):
when it comes to Fields, it's yeah, Justin does this,
but but he needs to do this, but this, but that,
but that. You could just tell them the way he talks.
He says, Okay, if Justin Field is gonna get this job,
he's got to come take it. And until that Russell Wilson,
who I know because I've seen him play great in
the NFL.

Speaker 6 (19:18):
I feel like I can win with him. You can't.

Speaker 1 (19:20):
He stinks, But Mike Tomlin thinks I gotta stick with
Russell Wilson. So you could tell it's gonna be you know,
the way the competition is waited in Tomlin's mind, it's Fields,
you really got to come up if you're gonna win
this job this soon over Wilson.

Speaker 6 (19:34):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (19:35):
I think the thing with Wilson is you talk about longevity.
You talk about a lot of that's long ago, and
there were a million other factors beyond Russell Wilson that
took him over the top.

Speaker 5 (19:45):
But otherwise, you know, you can't kill the narrative.

Speaker 4 (19:47):
It's still there, and it doesn't negate that he did
some big things and had big moments as a Seahawk
and even every once in a while as a member
of the Broncos. You can look at some of the
some games last year, it's like, all right, it started
to coming together.

Speaker 5 (20:01):
Remember the comeback against the.

Speaker 4 (20:03):
Bears that were beating the hell out of him, and
then he rallied them with some big plays down the stretch.
Doesn't eliminate his negatives either, but you've got proof of
concept that he can get you there and will take
care of the football almost to your detriment at times,
but he won't put the football generally in arm's way,
whereas with fields it's quite the opposite. From the fumbling

(20:25):
issue to the number of sacks he takes. For a
guy as elusive as a guy you know who's got
that electricity and those huge plays that you see, he
absorbs a ton of sacks. He stands in the pocket
quite with great regularity. You saw it tonight, right, he
took a sack that you know, the right tackle wasn't

(20:46):
very good on the play, but you still have to
see it like it's right in front of you, all right,
And he didn't adapt. So you have those two things
that will will kill you. And we know with the
Steelers good roster, whether they're explosive on offense or not,
it's wilsoner Fields, right. Arthur Smith comes in to try
to trigger this and push it forward. It can't be

(21:09):
any worse than it has been, but the margin of
error has been so thin in terms of getting them
into the winners circle these last couple of years. And
so that's the biggest thing from Mike Tomlin in the
evaluation is you know, I'm winning by field goals. I'm
not blowing teams out. We're not going to score thirty
five points a game. So who's gonna give me the

(21:29):
fewer negative plays? And that's where justin fields for all
of the good on a five of six and a
couple of good throws. He had the good twenty yard
out to Van Jefferson, the fumbled exchanges and absorbing the sacks.
Negative plays are going to keep him in the number
two chair until Wilson he'zer throws up on himself or
gets hurt.

Speaker 1 (21:50):
Exit out by to Fresco exits falling down the Jason
Spencer with Mike Carmon live from the Tirech dot Com Studios.
The most Shocking story of today coming up in ninety seconds.
But first Steve de Seger will shock you with all
the big scores for the night in sports with what's trending.

Speaker 9 (22:04):
We will three NFL exhibitions tonight. Not shocking. The game
at Miami had sixteen punts. It's preseason football, people, dogs
at fun and yet I think it was topped by
one of the games last night. Miami beat Atlanta twenty
to thirteen. Jason Sanders kicked a fifty eight yard field goal.
Yung Way Kup of the Falcons a fifty three yarder

(22:26):
by the Way. Nine games on Saturday, two on Sunday
this weekend, Houston did win at Pittsburgh twenty to twelve.
Justin fields and the Steelers started went five for six
sixty seven yards.

Speaker 2 (22:35):
C J.

Speaker 9 (22:36):
Stroud with an early touchdown pass for the winners to
Tank Dell. The Steelers placed linebacker Marcus Golden on the
retired list. He was drafted by the Cardinals almost a
decade ago. In this game at Pittsburgh, eight total kickoffs,
and with the new rules, not one went into the
end zone. Philadelphia won sixteen to thirteen at Baltimore on
a forty nine yard field goal on the final play

(22:56):
by Jake Elliott, who had just missed a fifty yarder.
It hit the upright, but on the next play the
Eagles got a sack and a fumble. Elliott got another
try and won it. Elliott had missed an extra point
also tonight, hit the upright. The Patriots cut wide receiver
Juju Smith Schuster. The forty nine ers released veteran tight
end Logan Thomas to the Olympics. US women's basketball easily

(23:18):
advanced to Sunday's final, beating Australia eighty five sixty four.
The Americans are going for their eighth straight gold medal.
The US men play Saturday's gold medal game in Paris
against France. On the track, the US women won the
four by one hundred relay. American Rye Benjamin took the
four hundred meter hurdles. US men's volleyball won the bronze
medal match, sweeping Italy. US women's soccer is in Saturday's

(23:41):
gold medal final against Brazil to MLB action, and the
Dodgers won the late game, sending the Pirates to a
fifth straight loss, nine to five. Shoheo Tani with his
thirty fifth home run. It went almost four hundred and
fifty feet to center field. Jack Flawherty, LA Native got
the win with ten strikeouts in five and two thirds.
The Dodgers say they will play Mookie Bets in right field,

(24:02):
not short stop when he returns from the wrist injury,
and he could be back next week. Dodger pitcher Walker
Buehler could return in about a week. San Francisco won
three to two over Detroit thanks to a sackfly in
the seventh, a sacrifice fly in the eighth, and a
game winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth.

Speaker 6 (24:18):
That's excitement right there.

Speaker 5 (24:20):
That is excitement.

Speaker 9 (24:21):
Beats the Giants.

Speaker 3 (24:23):
Giants are saying it beats the A's. Yeah.

Speaker 9 (24:25):
Seattle beat the Mets six nothing the final. Houston and
Seattle still tied for first in the Al West. Houston
won its game in a comeback eight to four at Boston,
Colorado sent the Braves to a sixth straight loss six ' five.
Arizona edge Philadelphia three to two on a solo homer
bottom of the ninth. Milwaukee and Saint Louis with wins.
Cubs have won seven of nine. They beat the White

(24:45):
Sox seven to six. Minnesota swept a double header from
Cleveland four to two and six to three. Cleveland has
lost seven in a row, so the Twins are just
a game and a half back of the Guardians in
the AL Central Toronto with a win. Washington won in
ten innings. Baltimore now a half game up on the
Yankees in the AL East because Baltimore was a winner
for to one at Tampa Bay while the Yankees got

(25:07):
rained out against Texas. They'll play a doubleheader tomorrow in
New York. And the Padres won their sixth in a row,
a comeback ten inning win six to two at Miami.
The Padres with a run in the eighth, solo homer
in the ninth, four in the tenth. The Padres are
second in the NL West, only two and a half
games behind the Dodgers. Whatever amazingly, they have trailed in
the ninth the last three games and won all of those.

Speaker 6 (25:30):
Back to you, Thank you, Steve.

Speaker 1 (25:32):
The Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike Harmen
Live the tire rack dot Com Studios. It's time once
again we have to get into what happened today at
the Olympics with the men's and women's for by one
hundred meter relay teams, because wow, did we have two
different experiences?

Speaker 5 (25:51):
We know, drama the firs.

Speaker 1 (25:53):
Look, let's let's start with the good first before we
get to the unbelievable. Look Shkerri Richardson anchor, here's the
final leg for the United States. She takes the baton
in fourth place and runs her way by everybody to win.
And it's an incredible moment for her, an incredible moment
for all of us, and a photo that will live forever.

(26:15):
As she is just about to cross the finish line
looking back over at the runners from France and Germany,
who are going, oh my god, we thought it was
between us for the gold medal. That is such a
cold blooded look, just yeah, you thought you're gonna win.

Speaker 6 (26:29):
Here.

Speaker 1 (26:29):
I am just about to cross the finish line and
she's staring daggers over at both of them, and that.

Speaker 6 (26:34):
Was so amazing.

Speaker 5 (26:36):
Here is your Olympic moment.

Speaker 4 (26:38):
But yeah, it's one of those we've watched the margin
of victories and we've seen a number of World Championships
the last couple of years, Jason, where you've got presumed victories.
So you start to cadillac it a little rest of
the field, you know, the objects and mirror closer theory
really holds in these Olympics where the margin of victory

(26:59):
is is not very very large in most of these events.
And but to have that bravado swagger whatever you want
to call it, uh, to go and and have that
moment of staring down as you cross a finish line,
it's about as good as it gets, man. I mean
you know that's that's where you you take a take
on legend status, more merch, oh no.

Speaker 6 (27:22):
And look and and for her too.

Speaker 1 (27:23):
You just think about like, was this just you know
the way the United States does it? Like hey, hey listen,
it's a pre Olympic meeting. Hey listen, we're gonna we're
gonna beat the crap out of everybody. Just listen, guys,
help everybody out, help NBC out. Let the other racers
feel like they're gonna win. For the first three quarters
of the race, and then we come from behind and win.
That's been like every race for the United States as Ye, hey,

(27:45):
it looks like somebody else could no. Here we come
streaming from behind, the wins. It's like straight out of
Ocean's eleven. He closes late. Everybody knows this for her
to win, you know, in that moment, knowing that her
story is a tough one, right, Like she found her
way out of the Olympics four years ago because she

(28:06):
smoked pot uh and got a positive test and you
can't be on the Olympic team like her her appealing
People were asking President Biden, shouldn't she be allowed to race?

Speaker 6 (28:14):
It's like, why the hell are people asking the president?
What like he's gonna intervene and go help. Yes, she
needs to get to the Olympics.

Speaker 5 (28:21):
Uh, come on, we need gold not really gold medals. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (28:25):
Look, it's it's a bad decision by her. It's an
awful thing. Look, it is the rule. You can't you
can't get around it. She gets back to the Olympics
now three years later, she's an overwhelming favorite. She doesn't
win her signature race to win here to anchor this
race and win. That look over at the competition was
not just a hey, you know what, watch this. This

(28:45):
was an entire last three years of frustration and focus,
and finally I'm able to enjoy the result that I
thought I was gonna get from all the years I
worked hard. Like, that's what I took away from that,
her doing that then crossing, she screams cross on the
finish line, That's what I took away.

Speaker 4 (28:59):
For No, one hundred percent, right, think of all the
opportunities loss, because you do lose some of that that
juice you know on Madison Avenue with the advertisers, sponsors, whatever,
not to say that, you know they all fled, but
you know you couldn't capitalize on a bunch of photo
ops with with a satchel of medals like you were

(29:22):
expecting to do a couple of years ago, right, I
mean you're expecting multiple gold, silver, whatever.

Speaker 5 (29:27):
She's gonna she get obtained.

Speaker 4 (29:29):
But I mean she was a favorite in a bunch
of these events, as were the women relay, et cetera,
And all of a sudden.

Speaker 6 (29:35):
Those aren't available to you.

Speaker 4 (29:37):
So yeah, that's three years of hearing about wasted opportunities.
How you screwed your teammates, your country, all of these
other things, personal attacks, because we certainly saw them, and
so that all comes back into that moment, and it
compartmentalizes itself into those poor women that were running alongside her.

Speaker 6 (29:59):
Look at the poor women. Look at that.

Speaker 4 (30:01):
They became the faces of everything, everything of the last
three years.

Speaker 6 (30:05):
Right.

Speaker 4 (30:06):
It's one of those moments in a movie or a
TV show, as you know, the hero's about to get
there and get over and it's like all of the
things they had to overcome like a fast you know,
let's scroll through them really quickly. So you remember the
origin story that was it in Shikari Richardson's face right
in that moment.

Speaker 6 (30:26):
Uh so you have.

Speaker 1 (30:28):
And then and then you have the men's four by
one hundred relay team that were disqualified because they screwed
up the hand off of the baton between the third
and fourth leg and a race that we were heavily
favored to win.

Speaker 6 (30:43):
Once again, we don't meddle.

Speaker 3 (30:45):
It was the guy in the front using a motor
he was.

Speaker 1 (30:49):
He was, so he they got disqualified yesterday.

Speaker 6 (30:53):
Yeah, he got disqualified too.

Speaker 1 (30:54):
So don't don't worry about it that they're getting to
the bottom of everything, Frostburg, don't worry, uh. I understand
that Noah Lyles didn't run. He probably would have. I'm
sure he was the anchor. And when you're talking about
the fastest man in the world not running, it changes
things a little bit. And I get that, okay, And
you have different people in different spots.

Speaker 6 (31:14):
Sure, I get that.

Speaker 1 (31:16):
But this is the fourth straight Olympics where the heavily
favored United States track team screwed up the handoff and
that's why we didn't get a medal.

Speaker 6 (31:25):
We haven't medaled in this sport.

Speaker 1 (31:27):
Since two thousand because we can't get the handoff right.
And I know what's teachable because you see everybody else
do it.

Speaker 6 (31:34):
I don't know what else you do in practice. If
you're practicing for.

Speaker 1 (31:36):
The four by one hundred you run, and I assume
you practice a handoff like thousands of times for the
last three years. Hell for the last twenty years. We
practice a handoff and we can't get it right. And
I watched some countries and I watch them just it's
just precision, and it's like clockwork watching China go around
bang bang bang bang bang bangs. Oh my goodness, look
at this so I know it's doable. I'm not. I

(31:58):
don't think we're asking for something that you want this
and all that.

Speaker 6 (32:01):
No, you can't. You can't not get the handoff.

Speaker 1 (32:04):
Right, And you had both play both runners at fault
that did did did he leave too early? Maybe did
the runner running third not catch up?

Speaker 5 (32:13):
Yeah?

Speaker 6 (32:13):
Maybe?

Speaker 1 (32:14):
Of course the handoff occurred outside the zone, which is
why the United States had disqualified.

Speaker 6 (32:18):
Like, how do you screw that up? I don't understand.
The Olympics is about.

Speaker 1 (32:22):
Is about Hey, four years of training and not deviating
from it, knowing this is what's gonna get you a medal.

Speaker 6 (32:29):
Having a little bit extra to push in a race.

Speaker 1 (32:31):
Yeah, that's great, But this is something the handoff is
something that you should be able to do. This should
be in your sleep, right, I mean, I know what's done,
and yet we're the only ones that can't do it,
and we keep throwing up on ourselves. And mean, some
of the best sprinners ever Justin Gallin screwed up with
the handoff a few years ago in the Olympics. Like,
I don't understand this. It's it's like Flynn Ryder from Tangled.

(32:52):
They still can't get my nose right. After all these years,
they still can't get my nose right. We still can't
get the handoff right in the four by one hundred.

Speaker 4 (32:59):
Well no, Noah Lyles had been taking shots in Canada.
I guess what they won. Carl Lewis posted, it's time
to blow up the system. That's unacceptable. Yes, it's clear
that everyone's more concerned with the relationships than winning.

Speaker 1 (33:13):
We're winning all these other races, but Carl Lewis wants
to blow up the whole thing.

Speaker 6 (33:17):
Right, all the other race, but this one race, We're
not blowing up.

Speaker 5 (33:20):
Get rid of it. We don't win this blow it up.

Speaker 1 (33:22):
Oh my god, I can't understand that exit. How about
a Fresca exit?

Speaker 6 (33:26):
Swollen do? On The Jason Smith Show with My best
friend Mike Carmon.

Speaker 1 (33:29):
Coming up next, we'll preview the huge gold medal matchup

Live from Thetirack dot Com studios.

Speaker 4 (33:54):
That didn't sound very enthusiastic. Come on, Tyer, finish the
throng man. We need a Friday hobo from you?

Speaker 3 (34:01):
Can I do a deeper voice?

Speaker 6 (34:02):
What are you working?

Speaker 1 (34:03):
Like?

Speaker 6 (34:03):
Three more days and you're off for three weeks?

Speaker 3 (34:05):
Is now I'm working the whole week next week? Are
you excited?

Speaker 5 (34:07):
Yeah?

Speaker 6 (34:07):
Okay, yeah, right now you're working all.

Speaker 3 (34:09):
The one and then I'm Trilie taking three weeks off.

Speaker 6 (34:11):
Yeah. Sure.

Speaker 1 (34:11):
Then I'll see Mary on Tuesday. Mary, I think you
were working. Yeah, Alex called it today. Can you work
for me today?

Speaker 4 (34:16):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (34:16):
She says that every time I hit her up.

Speaker 6 (34:18):
Yeah, yeah, yeah yeah.

Speaker 1 (34:19):
Uh So we have two incredibly big gold medal games
coming up for the United States. Tomorrow, one less than
ten hours from now, the United States women's soccer team
takes on Brazil. Meanwhile, twelve thirty Pacific time, three thirty
East Coast, United States France.

Speaker 6 (34:37):
In men's basketball, we's going down. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (34:41):
In twenty twenty eight, this may be a different story,
but I'm gonna tell you this, barring any sort of
Scott Foster officiating shenanigans, which there could be. I told
you from the beginning. Wow, we've seen France. We've seen
calls made for France and the Olympics. You've seen calls
going France's way because look their medal count. They have
more medals in this Olympics than they've ever had before.

(35:03):
This is what happens to the host country when you
host an Olympics. Hey, you somehow find a way to
win more medals than you ever have. You get the
home cooking, whether it is basketball or volleyball or fencing,
whatever it is, you get the home cooking.

Speaker 6 (35:18):
That could happen, right, that could happen.

Speaker 1 (35:20):
But barring something so unbelievable with the officiating, if the
United States doesn't win by twenty and win the gold medal,
I'm stunned. I know we've been said a long time. Now,
Oh they get it. Now, they're gonna be great. Oh no, no,
they still needed to get a message sent to them.
Oh but they got it now, they'll be great. Oh no, no, no,
they still need a message sent to them. Oh no,

(35:41):
they got it now. I think they understand after that
fourth quarter against Serbia, they're gonna get back to playing
transition basketball the way they do.

Speaker 6 (35:48):
They're gonna do.

Speaker 1 (35:48):
They're gonna play NBA style which is exactly what they
need to do to be able to push our advantage.
And France's strength isn't in the backcourt. I'm not expecting
them to rain threes on us all over the place.
So yeah, it'll be a crazy atmosphere. And you know,
Rick Buker said, Hey, we may have to withstand a
couple of runs by France. Yeah, that's fine, but in
the end, the United States wins by twenty I'll be

(36:11):
stunned if they don't win.

Speaker 4 (36:12):
Yeah, they get activated that final Stanza the other day
where you saw Durant not only offensively right came down
and hit a big shot in the mid range, but
also forcing the back court right length. They can match
length along the way officiating, it'll be interesting, you know
Embiid and Anthony Davis.

Speaker 5 (36:32):
Do they get to play.

Speaker 4 (36:34):
The hanging and banging down on the low post that
we've seen for much of the Olympics, but then at
times it becomes the tiki tag file? How much of
that do you get? The home cooking right where referees
get swayed by the excitement of the crowd that always
comes into play. So we'll see about that. But Steph
Curry finally found your shot. I don't think he loses

(36:56):
it quite so quickly. And maybe Halliburton gets to play
a couple minutes.

Speaker 1 (37:00):
No, maybe Jason Tata will get to play and his
mom will be happy.

Speaker 4 (37:03):
Well, I mean, look, got you gotta cancer. You gotta
leave out some of the outside noise. You can always
talk to mom after it's over, and trying to make
good a couple more days.

Speaker 5 (37:14):
Again, the only guy he's.

Speaker 4 (37:15):
Got to go back to the States and apologize to
if anything goes wrong is Steph Curry.

Speaker 1 (37:19):
Yeah, I know, and he's fine now. So Steph Court.
He scored thirty in the first half Flass game. I
think Steph is going well. Steph was making it hard
on him though he wasn't playing very well.

Speaker 4 (37:29):
And to Bucher's point earlier about the Tatum saga where
everybody's been crying and screaming, go back and watch how
well he did or didn't play in the run up
and even once we advanced to the knockout round, not
exactly lighting it up at every turn.

Speaker 1 (37:46):
So we look back now at the game that's gonna
be going on.

Speaker 6 (37:51):
I'm gonna have to go to bed, get up to watch.

Speaker 1 (37:53):
It after like four hours, the United States plays Brazil
for the gold medal and women's soccer. It has been
already been a great Olympics for the United States women's
team because they have recalibrated, they have refocused. It is
the dawn of a new era. The team has built
around the three forwards to tried it. Mallory Swanson, Sophia Smith,
Trinity Rodman.

Speaker 6 (38:12):
This is it.

Speaker 1 (38:14):
It's not gonna be great soccer tomorrow because eventually, when
you have to play a game every three days in
big heat for two and a half weeks, you're gonna
get tired. This is gonna be a battle of who
is tired the least and the freshest players on the field.
The last few games have been the United States forwards,
specifically Sophia Smith.

Speaker 6 (38:31):
She's running around.

Speaker 1 (38:32):
At the end of regulation that last game like hey,
I just came into the game, like I've only been
playing like five minutes. This is what's going to be
the difference for the United States Brazil. Even though Marta
is playing in her final game, great striker, incredible career,
Brazil is still a counter attack team. And we've just
played two counterattack teams and they couldn't put the ball
in the net. As long as the United States defensively

(38:54):
doesn't mess around with the ball and they're end too
much because they do a lot of f around and
find out win when they pass back to it. That's like,
what are you doing? That's the way the ball winds
up in the back of the net. As long as
that doesn't happen, the United States.

Speaker 6 (39:07):
Is going to score.

Speaker 1 (39:08):
Brazil's not going at the scoreboard again. It may take
a little bit like the last couple of games, but
eventually the US forwards are going to be too much
to handle.

Speaker 6 (39:16):
They win it to nothing, both goals coming from the.

Speaker 4 (39:19):
Trident Favorites over Under is two and a half on
this one. They were trying to put forth their own
nickname here of what they thought because in the last
match was a very deep discussion in the in the booth,
so you know they're they're trying to come up because look,
they want to get all the trademarks themselves. So he

(39:41):
really shouldn't put it out there because otherwise it's gonna
get ripped off left and right. But yeah, Forge and
too much Naire. She makes me nervous now and again.
Other times she stands on her head. You may never
have a greater moment than that save she made the
final minutes after the goal.

Speaker 6 (39:58):
Right, yeah, what do you go for?

Speaker 3 (40:00):
I had to correct you, but I think it's Mary Swanson.

Speaker 1 (40:05):
You have been running that Mary Swanson for the last
the last two weeks.

Speaker 4 (40:11):
And then it's all over after the game tomorrow. Like
he get gets to use it Monday and that'll go
away unless he's making fun of the Cubs and Rugs.

Speaker 3 (40:20):
But she better deliver that package like Lloyd Christmas.

Speaker 1 (40:22):
Man Exit out bout of Fresco, Exit Swollen Dome. The
Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike Carmen. Just
go back Dumb and Dumber nineteen ninety four. It's absolutely fun.

Speaker 5 (40:36):
Now go watch the Australian Breakdancer some more.

Speaker 6 (40:38):
So there you go.

Speaker 1 (40:39):
Hey, the lines of the Breakdancer were the biggest lines
of the whole bleeping Olympics. So yeah, let's go. Coming
up next, it's burning Bernie Frida. This is Fox Sports Radio.
