Speaker 1 (00:30):
Hello, Welcome inside final hour tonight The Jason Smith Show
with Monzi bolanos in from Mike Harmon. Whea, I need
a breath because I just blitzed to the bathroom.
Speaker 3 (00:41):
You made it, yes, yes, ret.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
So what's been going on tonight? The bathrooms here are
not working? Nothing is working, So we have to leave
to go to a different building to go to the bathroom.
Speaker 3 (00:54):
And I haven't run, and I don't know it.
Speaker 1 (00:57):
At a fifteen years right, I don't run anymore like
I don't my philosophy of running is Matt Damon at
the end of air, this is stupid.
Speaker 3 (01:04):
Why would I may do this?
Speaker 1 (01:05):
But I ran to run out of the building, to
run to the other building to get inside, go up
to the fifth floor where the bathroom is go to
the bathroom and then make it back here.
Speaker 4 (01:17):
I'm impressed, and I.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
Ran, and I gotta say breath. I don't like I
feel out of breath. Though. I don't like running. I don't.
I don't like running. Do you run? I don't like running.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
I would always run. Playing sports like that was my
don No. No, I played sports my whole life. I played
sports until I was probably oh no what I started
doing all night on ESPMP.
Speaker 3 (01:38):
Then I couldn't play. I was, I wasn't. I was
an okay chess player, but that was much better at checkers.
Speaker 5 (01:43):
No.
Speaker 1 (01:43):
I played till I was probably about thirty three, because
when I got the job on all night, I was, Yeah.
It was two thousand and three, and I just couldn't
play anymore because I worked at night and all the
teams I played and played for, all the hockey and softball,
they all played at night. I'm like, okay, I guess
I'm done. I guess that's it. So stuff, And it
was okay because I played for so long, and I played,
(02:03):
and I played, and I had to win a lot.
I was fortunate enough to win a lot of championships,
and I was a really good player for both sports.
Speaker 3 (02:08):
But I mean I was great. To be honest, I
don't want to lie on the radio.
Speaker 1 (02:12):
But I thought, okay, so I'm done. So I played
and I'm done and I'm okay. And I didn't really
miss it after that, and like I was kind of
force retirement. I'm like, okay, I retire when I was younger,
like Barry Sanders, and I walked away and then I
don't think i've run since.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
So because all my workouts are are walking and and
doing cardio. I hate running. I hate running.
Speaker 1 (02:30):
And I ran and to get to the bathroom and
then ran back and I still feel like I need
I need a couple of minutes.
Speaker 6 (02:38):
So we should just be grateful that you didn't spring
your ankle, you know, tear your meniscus.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
I see, yeah, I could have done all of those things.
Speaker 4 (02:45):
I don't know, it's on your ways A couple stairs.
Yeah you know what I mean, Like.
Speaker 3 (02:50):
I could have done all of those, but I did not.
Speaker 4 (02:54):
Look at you back and running back and running.
Speaker 1 (02:57):
Form uh so uh coming up in about fifteen minutes,
gonna head out to Vegas and get the latest Mark
Medina NBA Insider covering the summer League, Cooper Flagg's debut,
Bronnie James Big Game tonight and game winning this. Uh
so we head out to Vegas coming up in about
twenty minutes. But uh, I didn't think we'd have this
Tom Brady story today. Yet we do because you know,
(03:20):
headline comes up Sophia Vergara enjoying summer flaying with Fox Broadcaster,
and Frosburg immediately sent me that that story and has said.
Speaker 3 (03:29):
Terry Bradshaw, you dog. I was like, oh yeah.
Speaker 1 (03:33):
Fox Broadcast right, obviously clickbait together, Like who wouldn't say
Sophia Vergara and Tom Brady apparently are dating, right, who
wouldn't say to no with Fox Broadcast?
Speaker 6 (03:44):
Because if because a lot of people I think would
have seen Sephira got in Tom Brady yeah okay, and
then just kept going, yeah, well.
Speaker 3 (03:51):
I don't I don't know about it.
Speaker 1 (03:52):
I think that's I think that's a headline that stops
people like, whoa really the Tom Tom Brady severe because
it stopped me today like wow, Tom Braidy good Way
and made me go back because all of this is
coming from the Bezo Sanchez wedding, which, honestly, now we
need a deep dive you thirty for thirty documentary on
everything that went on at this wedding, because it's all
these A listers and all these crazy stories, right Brady
(04:13):
supposedly and Sidney Sweeney. No, no, no, now it's Sidney
Sweeney in Orlando Bloom. But wait a minute, there's pictures
of them at the wedding. They were hanging out together.
But supposedly Bezos and Sanchez are trying to get Katy
Perry back together with Orlando Bloom, who Katy Perry didn't
come to the wedding, potentially because Orlando Bloom did go there,
and who's hanging out like this is the big social
(04:33):
event of the season.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
This was the end of high school, two weeks.
Speaker 1 (04:38):
Before everybody goes away to college hookup party where everybody
just says, scrub, I never see these people again. So
there's either hookups or there's stories, or there's lies, or
there's stuff that is went out that nobody ever knew before.
That's what this party. This is what this party was.
We need a deep dive on it.
Speaker 6 (04:54):
Over like three days, there was like a party par Yeah,
yeah that I want to know about that.
Speaker 4 (04:59):
I want to know what people wore to that.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
Pajamas but you know, you know, like pajama but.
Speaker 6 (05:04):
Like Kim Kardashian's pajamas, which I did see was like
lingerie obviously.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
Oh yeah, yeah, there's gonna be there's gonna be good
pajamas and others.
Speaker 4 (05:12):
I want to know who wore, Like the basic pajamas, yeah, like.
Speaker 3 (05:15):
The world ones are too long for you, the big
wool pajamas.
Speaker 4 (05:19):
Good, exactly, exactly great, But it was a party that
took three days and who knows what went down.
Speaker 1 (05:25):
Yeah, well now we know apparently Brady and Sophia Vergara
are dating.
Speaker 4 (05:29):
I mean, why not you put two hot people together. Yeah,
and there's the same age.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
There's been.
Speaker 1 (05:34):
Yes, that's what my wife was very excited about. When
I said, you guys, go Tom Brady is dating. She goes, oh,
don't tell me he's dating Sydney Sweeney. I said, no, no,
Sophia for gard and she goes, oh, they're the same age.
I'm like, she's actually older than him. Like this is
a new thing, Like this is a this is an
anti Hollywood cun I mean, this is not Charlie Starren
saying had sex with a twenty six year old look
at me. I mean, this wasn't quite that, but you know,
(05:56):
still it's a bit of a okay, you said these
two p You know, Sophia for Gar is fifty three, right,
fifty four, Brady is forty eight. So but apparently they're dating.
It's many many sources have reported this today. There's been
no statement from Brady or Sophia Vergara against it, which
you would think there would be. No, they're just friends,
they were hanging out, they text each other. You usually
(06:18):
get that from the publicist. No, they're just for which
again brings you back to high school. No, they're just friends.
Tell me they didn't hook up because I'm in love
with her. No, they're just friends. Nothing happened, Nothing happened.
I had to lie to him and tell him that
you guys couldn't hook up. He was really sad and
crying in front of me. I didn't know what else
to say. So it brings it all back to that.
But like, this is a big thing. And now Tom
Brady so Fia Vergara are dating?
Speaker 4 (06:40):
Are they dating? Are they just hanging out?
Speaker 3 (06:43):
That's dating? Is that's dating?
Speaker 4 (06:45):
Is it dating for them? Like because they're celebrities, so.
Speaker 1 (06:47):
That's good, And I think that's like dating is Hey,
it's kind of casual. We'll see if it turns into something.
We're dating now if you're hey, there, boyfriend and girlfriend,
that's like boyfriend girlfriend is a different thing, like, oh,
we've committed to being exclusive with each other.
Speaker 3 (07:00):
Right now, they're dating. We're dating dating?
Speaker 6 (07:03):
Okay, all right, okay. I wonder how their conversation goes.
Do you think she's like, so, was that.
Speaker 4 (07:09):
A fumble or not?
Speaker 1 (07:12):
You know, it looked like the motion was gone, and
it looked like Woodson knocked the ball out of your
hands and Beekert's running around with it and all of
a sudden you get to go again.
Speaker 4 (07:19):
Really is can you explain that to me? Can you
explain how that went down?
Speaker 1 (07:24):
If I give you this football and you squeeze it,
can you tell me how the.
Speaker 3 (07:27):
Flat it is? Can you tell me how were inflight?
Speaker 2 (07:29):
Like?
Speaker 3 (07:30):
Is it eleven point five pounds? Is it not?
Speaker 5 (07:32):
Like?
Speaker 3 (07:32):
What's the pounds per square? Ech?
Speaker 5 (07:33):
Other?
Speaker 3 (07:33):
What is that? Can you tell me?
Speaker 4 (07:34):
Can you tell me?
Speaker 6 (07:35):
I don't know if she's a football fan or anything
like that, but I just want to know how their
conversation went, And I want to know who hit on
who first, like who approached who first?
Speaker 4 (07:46):
Did he approach her?
Speaker 1 (07:48):
Well, I will say I'll tell you this, I'll tell
you how it probably went like this is just you know,
the picture they shared their personality. Yeah, at some point
I would say, now if I wanted to see I'm
kind of old fashioned where I still think where if
two people are inswered each other, the guy should go
over and make the move first. So maybe this was
(08:08):
something as simple as I'm sitting down at the table
that you're at, because you know, at a wedding, because
everybody's moving, sitting righting down the table, and all he
has to do is say hi, I'm Tom and that
that's his opener. That's all he needs.
Speaker 3 (08:20):
I'm Tom and Tom Brady and I'm so fia.
Speaker 1 (08:23):
Yeah it's like yes, yes, yes, So I can see
where Okay, if I'm trying to picture what Brady is
like as a as a potential single man, you know,
wanting to talk to somebody, I could see him as
someone who is very dry wit that you know, has
the one liners that are funny, doesn't talk too much
(08:43):
but sort of you know, hey, oh, and you walk
away thinking, boy, he's good looking an, he's smart, doesn't
talk too much, like that's me think boy Jason just
I love him, but he just talks all the time.
So I think that's probably who how Tom Brady was.
I think it's probably Brady and fear For Gara, I
think people are expecting.
Speaker 3 (09:02):
Her to be Gloria.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
Yeah, like, because you see her personality all the time, right,
You're expecting her to be Gloria.
Speaker 3 (09:08):
But she does strike me as.
Speaker 1 (09:10):
Outgoing, speaker, mind, fun, kind of a spitfire, where hey,
she's just fun to hang around and talk to, and
she's absolutely gorgeous, so it's like, okay, yeah, I'm here.
That I could see that as being the two of them,
and it's kind of the opposite personalities.
Speaker 4 (09:24):
Yeah, And I do think that Sofia is like that.
Speaker 6 (09:27):
I had a coworker when I was at Universal Studios
as a door guy who was in an episode of
Modern Family, And so she told me at the table
read that Sophia Lagata was like ten minutes late to
the table read, but that she came in exactly how
you would envision Gloria coming in.
Speaker 4 (09:43):
I am sorry, I'm sorry, and that she.
Speaker 6 (09:44):
Came in that they sat down and that legit. I
just remember the story as we were talking about it
that as they were reading the script, they were changing
the lines based on how she said it, Like they
would give her a line, but then she would say
it how she would say it, and they would.
Speaker 4 (10:00):
Change the line. So they gave her the line as
you and I would say.
Speaker 6 (10:04):
The line right, and they're like, you say this how
you want, and then they would change it right then
and there during the table read. But that she was
like she was she is Gloria. That is Sophia Vegatta.
Speaker 2 (10:14):
You know.
Speaker 1 (10:14):
And that and that's also a thing about how talented
someone is as an actor and actress where you could
take a line that really is just okay funny, but
how you deliver it is gonna make it, and not
everybody can do that, and not even can do that, but.
Speaker 3 (10:29):
She could do that.
Speaker 1 (10:30):
And there's also a thing where when you see incredibly
attractive people that do fun things that are funny, it's amazing, right,
like you could want like I go this like Ryan Reynolds, right, Yeah,
he's an okay dramatic actor and he tried to do
so many different dramatic movies early on in his career
and it was just, Wow, he's just gonna be like
a little flat, a good looking dude that when you know,
(10:50):
when when time catches up to him, he's gonna stop
doing movies. But then he realized, oh, I could do
stuff like Van Wilder or then I get into Deadpools, like,
oh my goodness. And when you see really attractive people
that can pull off comedy, it's like, whoa, whoa, this
is a whole thing, right. And I didn't know a
ton of Sophia Vergara going into Modern Family like I saw.
I remember seeing her in Soul Plane, which is really underrated.
(11:12):
With Soul Plane was really funny and and and so okay.
But but you could tell on the show she stands
out right away when she says stuff that's not even
that does not even mean to have a punchline. You laugh, yes, right,
and that's so special on it, And so that that's
kind of That's the one thing that I think would
be a difficult thing for me is that people would,
you know, if I'm Sophia Vergara, right, they think I'm
(11:34):
going to be this way, like I'm going to be
glorious to deliver it, right, And I gotta be and
if I'm not, if I'm just quieter, if I want
to if I want to talk about knitting or binging movies,
or I want to talk about, you know, the fastest
pitchtwe in Major League Baseball tonight. Oh, that's not what
I'm expecting. I'm expecting Gloria, And and people walk in
with that preconceived idea. And so when it comes time
(11:55):
to are we bonding like, Oh, I don't know, it's
a little weird. No, it's just she's just not the character.
She's an actress. It's what she's playing on.
Speaker 6 (12:02):
Television, right, right, right, But she's not acting, that's her,
that's her, which is again give it credit to what
credit is do because she is funny and funny. You
can't teach you either understand it because it's timing, because
it's the delivery.
Speaker 4 (12:14):
And if you can't teach that, you can't teach funny.
Speaker 3 (12:19):
You can.
Speaker 1 (12:19):
No, you can't teach funny. No, No, you can't teach funny.
You can teach someone. It's hard to teach someone comedic
timing correct. It's hard to teach someone how to say
something right.
Speaker 3 (12:29):
You can.
Speaker 1 (12:30):
I think you can take somebody and make them pretty
good comedic straight men or women like, okay, you know what,
you can be pretty good as a strength like Jason
Bateman Arrested Development. Right, like everything that he says. When
he tries to be funny, it's like, Okay, he's not
that guy. But when he's the straight man, he's absolutely hysterical.
I don't know that there's a better straight man that's
ever worked in Hollywood than Jason Bateman and rest Development.
(12:52):
Like the stuff he just the one liner, dead pan
straight man comedy that he has, it's just it's just amazing.
Speaker 3 (12:57):
So I think you can teach people to do that.
Speaker 1 (12:59):
But the over the top funny where you're gregarious, you know,
you can't teach that.
Speaker 6 (13:04):
This is gonna sound like a diss a Jason Bateman,
and it's not because I think he's great and I
love Arrested Development, But I think.
Speaker 3 (13:10):
This is where I come in, is Ron Howard, this
is a dissy.
Speaker 4 (13:14):
No, I was gonna say that.
Speaker 6 (13:15):
I think those the funny parts that he is in
an Arrested Development, those one liners are executed by editing.
Speaker 4 (13:24):
Editing can make it funny.
Speaker 6 (13:26):
Yeah, okay, right, Like it's not just you, it's the
editing makes it a little funny. And then there's the
people who just naturally understand timing because comedy timing go
hand in hand.
Speaker 4 (13:36):
So how fast did you deliver that line? Or did
you wait? It's like, that's what I think. You can't
teach the timing of it, all right, I'm with you, Yeah,
I know what I mean.
Speaker 3 (13:44):
I'm with you on that. I'm with you on it,
and now are you with me?
Speaker 1 (13:48):
We are no more than a year away from a
Modern Family reboot. Everybody comes to everybody's had their time
away from the show to go do whatever they want to.
But now, hey, we're kind of itching to be in
the spotlight again, and everybody's gonna come back because Modern
Family was so successful, not going to say goodbye to it,
And Brady could be on as a romantic interest for
Sophia Vergara until Ed O'Neill beats him up. No, wearing
(14:13):
his pulk high jersey, he beats up Tom Brady and
wins Gloria back.
Speaker 4 (14:17):
Okay, no, that's not gonna happen.
Speaker 6 (14:19):
But I do like your idea that Modern Family comes
back after almost ten years off the air, which is crazy,
and that they will have Tom Brady on the show.
But it's gonna be like Tom Brady saves the day.
Speaker 4 (14:32):
Like she gets stranded, like her car breaks down.
Speaker 3 (14:35):
Oh okay, okay, getting somewhere.
Speaker 4 (14:36):
In Hollywood, in La. Her car breaks down and she
doesn't have Jay. Jay is in a meeting at the
closet closet, closest closets.
Speaker 3 (14:43):
That's not all those guys years ago.
Speaker 6 (14:46):
Yeah, so he'll be in the she needs help, and
there is Oh Tom Brady just happens to be walking by.
Maybe he went to go get a cappuccino or something
in this little, you know, coffee shop, and he saves
the day.
Speaker 3 (14:59):
Ah, everybody, and they all get a.
Speaker 1 (15:01):
Crush on and they all get single one of vichen
Cans exactly, even Lily who's forty now yeah, and.
Speaker 4 (15:08):
Dylan and Hayley, all of everyone's just gonna be like,
oh my god, is this Tom Brady? And then SOA's
gonna be like Ken.
Speaker 3 (15:17):
Who is he?
Speaker 4 (15:19):
He's a famous football player?
Speaker 1 (15:21):
Cat no pat and depending on that idea, by the way, right, no,
no call us all those crazy closets. I love those
guys exit out about a Fresco exit mon, there it
is Tom Brady.
Speaker 4 (15:33):
Sophie I mean, that would be a great episode.
Speaker 3 (15:36):
I'm telling you, I'm writing it down.
Speaker 4 (15:38):
Especially if they continue to date.
Speaker 6 (15:40):
Sure, or if they don't make even better You're right,
You're right as long as it ends positively, but.
Speaker 4 (15:45):
Whatever, that would be so good.
Speaker 1 (15:47):
Coming up next, we head to Vegas and getting the
lowdown on Cooper Flags NBA debut and more. Was it
really that good?
Speaker 3 (15:55):
Yes? It was. That's coming up next right here, This
is Fox Sports right.

Got to listen to the whole show. Understand what that is.
That's that's shorthand for a month. He wants to be
known tonight as Man no hope, Man, no Hobo, Harmon.
Speaker 6 (17:13):
Hobo hobo and ask man is he?
Speaker 5 (17:17):
I don't know?
Speaker 3 (17:17):
Okay, I'll text him to ask him.
Speaker 4 (17:20):
I'll answer to see Sidney Sweeney, j Lo, ask him?
Speaker 3 (17:24):
You still say you still say j Lo over Sidney Sweet.
Speaker 4 (17:27):
I would take j Lo over Sidney Sweet. And this
is strictly based on looks. Okay, okay, official, Okay, yeah,
extremely super I'm extremely super visual j Lo.
Speaker 6 (17:40):
This isn't about my conversations with either of them.
Speaker 4 (17:42):
I don't think either of them would. I probably have
a drink with Sidney Sweeney instead of j Lo.
Speaker 3 (17:47):
Sweeney probably gets down, probably.
Speaker 4 (17:49):
Gets down, you know what I'm saying.
Speaker 1 (17:50):
But okay, all right, now, parties get a little weird now, Okay,
all right, okay, okay, okay, yeah.
Speaker 4 (17:56):
Like yeah, like you'll have several drinks.
Speaker 1 (17:59):
Well, we're good allegedly, you know, I know what we
can and can't say, right, Uh do you.
Speaker 3 (18:04):
Really know that?
Speaker 1 (18:05):
This from a guy who just discovered last night Kirk
Cousins is overpaid?
Speaker 3 (18:08):
Why are you pissing me off?
Speaker 5 (18:12):
Now?
Speaker 1 (18:13):
Speaking of parties, well, they call our next guest. He
is the one man party. At least it is happening
right now in Vegas, where he is covering the Summer
League and the debut of Cooper Flag NBA insider Mark Medina.
You can follow him on Twitter at Mark g Underscore Medina.
Follow him on Sports key to Athlon Sports TV on
(18:33):
CBS Mark.
Speaker 3 (18:34):
What's happening man? How are you?
Speaker 5 (18:37):
Jason Manta? I haven't lost any money in Vegas? Yes,
so so far, so good?
Speaker 1 (18:42):
Okay, Oh, you're saving it till after you get done
with us. Then you're going to hit the tables. It's
like eleven o'clock. It's early in Vegas.
Speaker 5 (18:48):
The key word is yes, Jason.
Speaker 3 (18:51):
All right?
Speaker 5 (18:52):
Hear me out, Jason. I don't want to make you mad,
but I got a preson with the truth. I think
that you should be making money because I heard the
commentary that he had about Cooper Flag. That's literally the
messaging that Mark Cubban was telling Man a few other
reporters after the game. It was almost like you were
feeding him and consulting them. So I'm sure that check
(19:14):
is in the mail.
Speaker 3 (19:15):
Wow.
Speaker 1 (19:15):
So I mean watching him tonight, you can just tell
the eye test. He looks like the guy. He'll be
the number one option opening night, mainly because you also
have Kyrie Irving's injury to get in here and ad
plays down low obviously, but he passed the eye test.
His skill set's going to be able to translate. You
saw tonight the speed of his game. He's gonna be
(19:38):
Everything is gonna work fine in the NBA. Like even
though he took twenty one shots night and missed most
of them, I don't care. I love that he was aggressive.
You can just tell opening night he is the franchise
and there's not gonna be anything getting away from that.
Speaker 5 (19:51):
Yeah, And that's exactly what Mark Skiben was talking about,
Like he can do literally everything on the floor. You
got to fix boards for the three seals of block.
You mentioned the poor sh percentage here and this is
where Mark Cuban took took us a in direction I
was not anticipated. He was saying that the way he
was shooting and the way that he's developing could be
(20:12):
the similar way that Kobe Bryant developed that. You know,
he didn't come in right away as a polished player,
but he kept working, kept working, kept working. I even
asked him if he thought of that comparison, partly because
we thought we saw Cooper Flag do some step back
shots and he's like, yeah, those shots reminded me at
(20:35):
Dirk So wow, for someone who for someone who only
went five to twenty one from the field, it was
the hell of the debut. And he's already evokeing a
lot of comparisons.
Speaker 6 (20:47):
Speaking of a step back, nice shot, Bronnie James had one.
Speaker 4 (20:50):
Over Cooper Flag.
Speaker 6 (20:52):
How have you seen Bronnie James's progression in the last.
Speaker 5 (20:56):
Year, Mark, Yeah, it's been huge. Hole it's in relative
because a lot of the time he's played it's been
im THEG League and when he's played with the Lakers
be besides that regular season debut with Lebron, it's mostly
been a MoMA duty. But in this game specifically, I
saw him play with a lot more confidence, a lot
(21:16):
more ver purpose. I mean, he was shit. He was
hitting shots to open the game. He was defending Cooper
flag and picking up ninety four feet. He almost forced
a turnover on him until the officials called a foul
on him. So you know, I know he didn't miss
he missed the potential game winner. I know Skip Bayless
(21:36):
is already saying like fatherlike son. That's an easy, low
hanging fruit thing. I think beyond that, he was playing
with a lot of encouraging signs. Yes, it is summer league,
but the fact that he looked a lot more polished
than he did in last year summer league shows that, Look,
we don't know what his trajectory and what his crew
(21:57):
is ultimately going to look like. But the thing that
palent evaluators around the league will say is that he
works hard, has a great attitude, great team guy, coachable,
So who knows what the ceiling is. But he's all
about doing the work and not just saying, hey, don't
you know who I am? I'm I'm Lebron's son. Lebron
(22:17):
does enough of that forum that he's been all about
just putting his nose to the ground and then trying
to get better at the scroft.
Speaker 3 (22:24):
You know.
Speaker 1 (22:24):
And the funny thing is the big highlighting light that
stands out to me for Cooper Flag and Bronnie James. Yeah,
you had the big dunk that Cooper Flagg was almost able.
Speaker 3 (22:32):
To pull off. It would have been an amazing highlight.
Speaker 1 (22:35):
But he had one sequence where Bronni who's a pretty
good defender.
Speaker 3 (22:40):
Is guarding him one on one and he's.
Speaker 1 (22:42):
Kind of at the elbow and Cooper Flagg is dribbling down,
dribbling down and then either realizes he can't get to
the hoop or just says, you know what, I have
the shot here, and he just turns and fades away.
And Bury's a jumper. And I'll just say to myself,
how can you stop that?
Speaker 5 (22:56):
Right?
Speaker 1 (22:56):
Because if you're a smaller defender, he's going to shoot
over you, and if you're a big defender, he's going
to dribble around you. Just the fact that confidence to
back you down, back you down, back you down, and
I'm gona turn and hit that fade away like that.
When I saw that, I said, oh man, this game
is his game is so ready to go right out
of the gate.
Speaker 5 (23:13):
Yeah, And I mean, he definitely hit shots like that,
but there are also times that he wasn't forcing the issue.
I thought that there were a lot of times he
was getting double timment. I mean, the Lakers kicked him
up when he had a half corn swarmed them as
soon as the opening tip happened, and he's seemed composed
with that. His driving kick game is really good, passing
(23:33):
out of double teams is really good. And that was
another thing that really impressed Mark Tube that he didn't
think Cooper Flag was trying to play with anything to
prove is that, Hey, I'm the number one pick and
I got to do all these amazing things. He mostly
was playing the right way, and the reason why he
took so many shots is one they were opening too.
He is the guy on Summer League, but moving forward,
(23:56):
he's not going to be the uh, you know, the
savior for the franchise like most number one picks are, because,
as you mentioned, Kyrie Irving's on the team, Anthony Davis
is Kway Thompson. They have a pretty core, a good
core group with Derek Lively the second of Daniel Gafford,
So he's able to be able to grow kind of
(24:17):
organically without having that pressure of carrying the franchise. But
what I will say is that it's also going to
cut both ways. Kyrie Irving, we don't know when he's
coming back. It's not to open the season, but knowing
ACL injuries, best case scenario midway through the season, Anthony
Davis better health compared to the Lakers. But you never
know how durable he's going to be, so he's going
(24:39):
to have to be adaptable. That's one thing that people
around the NBA are really impressed with because he has
that complete game. They think that he can be pretty
seamless when it comes to being the number one, number two,
number three guy. I mean so much that one executive
predicted already multi year All Star All NBA his entire career,
(25:01):
with exception of his rookie season.
Speaker 6 (25:03):
Wow, Mark, you've been in Las Vegas watching these games.
Speaker 4 (25:07):
Obviously the marquis for everybody was Cooper Flagg and Brownie James.
Speaker 6 (25:11):
But has anyone stood out to you that you have
been watching in the summer league games?
Speaker 5 (25:16):
Yeah? Well, the other thing I caught my eye today
was seeing the Pelicans game. Got to see Jeremiah Fear
and Derek Queen. You know, he's Fear's number seven the
Queen thirteen. That was kind of a controversi versial pick
because the Pelicans moved up ten spots to get him
and traded for him. So with Fear, what was interesting
(25:37):
is he plays with a lot of confidence. They're telling
him to play free, don't worry about making mistakes. But
he did have a lot of turnovers and so that's
the thing that he's going to have to correct that.
The Pelicans are really trying to make him feel empowered
to just run the show, and they feel like he
can do that with Queen. You know, it's interesting. I
asked Corey Brewer to what it event he carries a
(26:01):
chip on his shoulder because of, you know, the fact
that he's seen as this move the Pelicans should have made,
and he's like, I'm not sure about that. But he
has a lot of confidence. And so with the Pelicans,
there's a lot of questions on what they're going to
do and if Diane Williamson can be healthy and how
does this new front office manage things under Joe Dumars.
(26:21):
But they're really going to they're really attaching their success
on how Jeremiah Fear really carries the franchise, and that's
why they've been trying to thrill the message into him
in Summer League that it's his show and don't be
afraid to make any mistakes.
Speaker 1 (26:39):
NBA insider Mark Medina with us Jason Smith Montsibolangio's Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (26:43):
All Right, So with every passing.
Speaker 1 (26:46):
Day, there seems to be another bit of evidence that
Lebron James is getting close to a trade, right, whether
it's work. I'm working out at the Cavs facility. I'm
wearing a welcome home hat. Oh no, no, nothing to
see here. DeAndre Ayton's saying that, no, I haven't gotten
a welcome to the Lakers text from Lebron James. We
know that the Lakers and Lebron relationship is not the best,
right now, what have people been saying talking about it
(27:08):
as it's been going on in Vegas the last couple
of days.
Speaker 5 (27:10):
Yeah, exactly what you said, Jason. Hey, another invoice in
the mail, by the way, But now, what what does
it mean? What does this mean? Though they think that
it's just two parties not getting along, but they're going
to conclude that they're better off saying with each other
because you know, the anative. There's not better alternatives. But
I think it was telling that Lebron He's always touting
(27:32):
his son, He's always talking about him. He wasn't at
the game today. Uh, you know, Savannah and everyone else
was Rich, Paul was, but Lebron wasn't. Now maybe that's
better than you know, trying to suck all the oxygen
out of the room and stealing the spotlight from Bronni
and Cooper Flag and having the awkwardness of ignoring the
Lakers front office. But you know, normal circumstances, Lebron's at
(27:57):
Bronni's games, so you know, it's fodder for the most part.
I don't think the Lakers are going to trade Lebron
because I don't think that there's really a market form.
I mean, yes, every team will be wanting his services,
but I don't think to give up a lot, and
I don't think the Lakers are in that business. So
(28:17):
I think I think things are going to be statisical.
I was even jokingly wondering how well BRONI was playing.
Was Rich you know, Paul going to send out a
new statement, you know, reiterating that Lebron James is one
hundred percent committed to the Lakers because how well it's
suns late at night. But that didn't happen. But I
still think nothing changes.
Speaker 6 (28:39):
It's hard to believe that nothing changes, even Shams, who
is at Summer League. Also, there's a video circulating on
X and he reiterates Lebron wants to win, but he
understands that the.
Speaker 4 (28:52):
Lakers are preparing for the future.
Speaker 6 (28:56):
It almost was like, why do you keep reiterating that, Like,
what do you know that we don't know? It seems
like it is not a happy marriage right now.
Speaker 5 (29:06):
Yeah, And I think what it is, it's a transactional relationship.
And I think that's how it's really pins since the
get go. When Lebron came here, Laker fans weren't welcoming
him as a savior. They were welcoming him, welcoming him
as hey used to be a rival of ours. We
didn't really like you, but now we appreciate your here.
(29:28):
Now go win us a bunch of titles, right, And
Lebron's even admitted that that he learned once he joined
the Lakers organization. If they don't care what you've done
in the past, I think from Lebron's perspective. When you
talk to people around him, he feels like, hey, I
was the obvious missing piece with getting him a championship
(29:49):
in twenty twenty. Prior to my arrival, they're going through
the worst stretch in franchise history. Like showed him appreciation, right,
But I think on the other side, the Lakers do
appreciate all that and everything that he does on the court,
how he plays, how he adjusts his role, how he sacrifices.
But you know, with how he tries to influence roster
(30:11):
decisions and all that. I think ever since the Russell
Westbrook trade, both parties have decided, you know what, when
it comes to front office, we're just going to keep
a healthy distance and each person stays in their own
lane and as a result, it's a transactional relationship. The
last thing, to your point, Mom, say that I was
really revealing it. I talked to Jenie Bust two years
(30:33):
ago and asked her, like, what would it mean for
you for Lebron to retire as a Laker And she says, yeah,
it would mean a lot, and that's obvious. But then
she pivoted and said it wouldn't change anything, and she
started sharing how when Shaquille O'Neal got traded, that didn't
necessarily prevent them from retiring his jersey and putting a
(30:56):
statue up. And her point was, regardless of what happens
with Russell Lebron's career, they're still going to retire as
sure jersey. They still appreciate everything. I thought it was
an unintentional reveal that she's prepared, She's always been prepared
at some point that maybe she doesn't retire as a Laker.
But if I had to put some money on it,
(31:18):
and I know I'll lose money in Vegas, I think
I'll win money off here. I think he does retire
as a Laker.
Speaker 1 (31:24):
He's on Twitter at Mark g Underscore Medina. That said,
Mark g Underscore Madina Athlon Sports keen to CBSTV Mark,
great stuff as always, Man, enjoy whatever you wind up
doing in Vegas, and if you need money, just well
don't call me.
Speaker 3 (31:39):
Just let me know. If you need any like you
bailed out of jail or something. I'll help you with that.
Speaker 5 (31:44):
I'm here the best, Jasey. You'll get some invoices in
the mail and feel free to wire them.
Speaker 1 (31:48):
Yeah, very good. Tell Mark Cuban. He got my points
out there pretty well.
Speaker 3 (31:52):
That's good.
Speaker 5 (31:52):
Love it, love it, appreciate you.
Speaker 1 (31:56):
You'd think that I'll have a pipeline Mark Cuban. Obviously,
Mark Cuban listens to the show. If he's saying the
same things, absolutely same things, he's listening.
Speaker 4 (32:02):
I mean you and Mark Cuban won in the same.
Speaker 1 (32:04):
Yeah, JJ Redick hates me. He listens Mark Cuban. Apparently
that's how it goes.
Speaker 4 (32:07):
Now, I mean, what else?
Speaker 6 (32:09):
What else could could it make your night better Jason
than hearing that Mark Cuban. If you is literally saying
what you're saying, the only.
Speaker 1 (32:16):
Thing can make it sound better is if you tell
me that the Mets on Appeal won their double header
with the Orioles today. Because I don't think that's gonna happen.
Speaker 4 (32:26):
No, I don't know all. I can't tell you that.
I'm sorry, yes, the.
Speaker 1 (32:29):
Mess you could at least you can at least skip
that story with what's trend?
Speaker 3 (32:32):
Howbout I just.
Speaker 4 (32:33):
Won't give you the scores and tell you that the
Orioles won their double.
Speaker 2 (32:36):
Orioles play the double.
Speaker 1 (32:37):
Orioles had a double header against the Mets today, two
games now moving, one.
Speaker 6 (32:41):
Now moving on the Cubs took down the Twins in Minnesota.
Eight one was the final there. It was all Reds
against the Marlins six zero. Yankees were down five runs
against the Mariners. In fact, Seattle's Brian Wu had a
no hitter going into the eighth inning that was broken
up by Jazz Chisholm jew.
Speaker 4 (33:00):
And it all kind of went downhill from their.
Speaker 6 (33:02):
Air and Judge with the walk off sackfly in the
tenth inning, Yankees beat the Mariners six five.
Speaker 4 (33:08):
By the way, Josh Chishom Junr. While they were playing
this game, they announced that he's gonna be in the
Home Run Derby.
Speaker 6 (33:13):
Like while they were playing, they're like, oh, by the way,
here's a highlight video.
Speaker 4 (33:18):
He's gonna be in the Home Run Derby. He's a
final participant.
Speaker 6 (33:21):
So this is on Monday, and he's gonna be joining Braves,
Ronald Acunya Junior Mariners, Cal Rawley Nationals, James Wood Pirates,
O'Neil Cruz, Ray's junior coming netto Twins Byron Buxton, and
A's Brent Rooker.
Speaker 4 (33:36):
That is the home Run Derby slate Monday.
Speaker 3 (33:40):
That's gonna be great.
Speaker 4 (33:41):
I think so. I think so. You get to win
a nice chain that spins or something. I don't know,
something like that that.
Speaker 6 (33:47):
Spins about how did you see the chan They showed
a picture and spins like I would.
Speaker 4 (33:56):
Prefer the chain over the How much money do they
do they win? Like one hundred grand?
Speaker 3 (34:00):
I take the money, you would take it? Take the money? Yeah, yeah,
because all you go.
Speaker 1 (34:03):
To David Buses and trade in like three hundred and
fifty tickets to get that.
Speaker 6 (34:07):
And get a chain that's gonna break in two seconds.
This one is not gonna break all right. Red Sox
have won seven in a row. They held on four
to three against the Rays. The Cardinals crushed the Nationals
eight to one. The A's also walked it off against
the Braves five to four and eleven innings. Rangers defeated
the Angels eleven to four in LA, and the Padres
held on against the Diamondbacks at home four to three.
(34:29):
Chargers news running back Naji Harris apparently sustained a superficial
eye injury during a fireworks mishap on the fourth of July,
but he's expected to be ready for the upcoming season
of the NFL. OKC has given more money this time
to Jalen Williams a five year max extension worth two
hundred and eighty seven million. So if you add up
Jalen Williams, chet Home, Grins and SGA's contracts, eight hundred
(34:53):
and twenty two million dollars.
Speaker 3 (34:56):
Price of success is a steep one.
Speaker 4 (34:58):
Is this steep boy? Back to us?
Speaker 1 (35:03):
Jason than chum it up next? Hey, we finished the
best way we know how. We remember an absolute legend
with the greatest sports rant of all time. That's next,
Jason Smith Montsey Belangio's Fox Sports Radio.
