Speaker 2 (00:22):
Please give you're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
I'm ready, I'm ready, slick, are you.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
Ah?
Speaker 1 (00:35):
That's Fox Sports Radio The Jason Smith Show with my
best friend Mike Harmon.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
Sometimes you learn life's lessons and songs. Yeah yeah, And
just like the White Sox, sometimes you win. Sometimes sometimes
you know it.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
That happens that way. Speaking of winning, Dodgers up over
the Angels two to one show, Hey Otani a triple
and he just scored on a single. Had he just
held up at second, he could have stolen third for
another solen base and gotten close to fifty to fifty,
could have done it, but he didn't. You know what
you got? What Ramirez is? What thirty four to thirty four?
Nobody cares no, because that's great. If you well, you
(01:10):
got a guy's gonna be fifty fifth. I'd just say it.
Speaker 3 (01:12):
He's gonna get to forty forty and JOINNA. What's still
a pretty exclusive.
Speaker 1 (01:17):
That's awesome. I'm wrong here to have your balance. That's
gratchy boy. This is really a nice year.
Speaker 4 (01:23):
No one.
Speaker 1 (01:24):
The thing is here's is this helping you being under
the radar that no one's talking about the fact that
you could be forty forty that help you get there.
Don't even get the Cleveland drop. No, no, not even know.
Tyser's got to come back to work for it to
have the Cleveland Yeah. Uh So we'll keep you updated
all the big baseball going on tonight. But it's NFL
(01:46):
Eve Eve. And before we give you our surprise playoff
teams for this year in the NFL, the long protracted
holdout of Trent Williams is over. How about that? Now
the only holdout left in the NFL, of course, is
a son Reddick. Jet's gonna Jet Yeah yeah, yeah, but
he was seen signing it Jets will I'll tell you this,
it's serious. Now, he'll be signed by this time tomorrow,
(02:09):
Reddick will be It's embarrassing. Yes, there's video of him
signing a Jets helmet. He will be signed by this time.
The Jets move money around to that is a collectors
if there ever was.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
He signed this helmet more signed by Sean Connery where
they exactly one.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
And fifty dollars. But no, look, he's the only one left.
It's the only hold out left. He was signing Jets paraphernalia. Uh,
he's close to He hasn't even been in the building,
hasn't talked to Robert Sala in a month. But this
is embarrassing. But it seems like they move money around.
Tonight they signed Michael Carter, one of the best nickel
corners in the league, to a big contract extension. And
(02:48):
so I would say, tell you, I feel pretty confident
by this time tomorrow he's a jet. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
Just fun watching the morning you get moved around, right,
Because what did they do? They restructured in San Francisco
U sixteen point five. Yeah, they're cap space by restructuring demo.
So again the old Hey, we're at the cap, we
can't do anything.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
They have violin over in the corner. It's all ps
and it's all hocus pocus. What do we tell you?
You can always figure the money out. The money is
always able to be figured out. Don't any if anyone
ever tell you it's too much money? Do You can
always figure out all like the waves analogy like it.
It's really rough out there, and then you start seeing
(03:26):
just little ripples because you recognize how much you can
smooth things out if you're steady on your feet. So
Trent Williams ends his holdout with the forty nine ers.
They wind up freeing up money, giving him a lot.
He is now in with a week's practice to get
to go for Monday Night against the Jets. The Niners
made it more difficult than they needed it to be.
(03:47):
But look, hey, did I want them coming in no
after week one?
Speaker 5 (03:50):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (03:50):
You need it. You wanted proof of concept that it
wasn't gonna workout him. But the Niners did the smart thing.
All this worrying about money. I feel like they wring
their hands at every contract negotiation and they make it
so much harder than it needs to be. Ooh, this
is a big any decision that needs to be made.
It's like we have to wait months before we make it.
Look did they wait a long time? Yeah? Did Trent
(04:10):
Williams get his money? Yeah? It's smart. They'll figure out
the rest of the money after again, eight guys now
making over fifteen million dollars a year. You know, it's
a one year thing. This is their year. This is it.
That's why this is the Niners year. The super Bowl
window was open for this year only because after this
year they're gonna lose three or four of those guys
because they can't pay him. You can't pay all the
keep going. So because brock Perty's gonna get a lot
(04:33):
more money than he is now, they're gonna want to
sign him long term. They don't want to be cheap
or look bad and say, hey, we don't need to
give you a lot of money next year. We' just
got to give you some decent amount of money. No,
you want your franchise quarterback to be happy. So this
is it, like this is the year. This is the
year nine Ers, No next year not. They haven't built
the dynasty. They built a team where hey, are you
gonna get one super Bowl before your three year run
(04:54):
of the most talented roster in the NFL evaporates. That's
where it's at right now for San France.
Speaker 3 (05:00):
I mean, I understand the front office and the decision
making process, especially because it's again, it's a changing marketplace.
Speaker 1 (05:07):
It's like we were talking about a lot yesterday.
Speaker 3 (05:09):
Listen to the podcast Grab It, give it five stars rated, evangelized, friends, family,
et cetera. And keep expanding our horizons here. But where
things change, right, the rules of engagement nil and all
those other things changed it for college coaches and administrators
who for years had been able to operate absolute autonomy, authority,
(05:30):
my way or the highway whatever, it doesn't work anymore.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
Right. You got to literally have.
Speaker 3 (05:35):
To use the kid gloves because you got to understand
the temperament and temperature of your locker room.
Speaker 1 (05:40):
Of the players.
Speaker 3 (05:41):
The guy that you think is your golden goose, well
maybe there's more gold over there, right, or he becomes
a bigger goose. I don't know whatever the analogy is,
but the idea of being that that's not going to change. Well,
in the NFL, it's the same thing. Guys used to
play out until their final year and then they fight. Well,
Williams has three years left on had because they've already
(06:04):
redone it. But he had three years left on his
deal and still just said, nah, I'm not gonna do it.
And that's the thing that's changing right. It used to
be one maybe two years left that you'd get a
little bit of a ripple. Now it's all right. I'm
underpaid a year and a half into a contract that
I signed all hold out or hold in or whatever
(06:24):
the terms. However they go through the process because it's
all about the fine schedule, because they actually have to
be fine.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
Now.
Speaker 3 (06:30):
Sure, back in the day, I was like, I find
you two million dollars. Yeah, I just kid welcome back.
Speaker 1 (06:36):
But you won't even know that. We get to burn
it in the fireplace.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (06:40):
But also, is this something that really has to be
paid back or this is you have to pay it back?
You can't see me, but I'm winking at you. No,
don't worry, but you'll pay it all back.
Speaker 3 (06:50):
I think you have to show that a transaction took
place and then it goes out the back door.
Speaker 1 (06:55):
Do I to shoy it? Do I have money? Do
I have to show that another transaction happens right after it? No? No,
I don't have to shut it out. That's what I mean.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
Like the check got cash look endorsed by Jerry Jones,
and then out and back went a bunch of crisps
one hundred dollars mills right back into whomever's pocket.
Speaker 1 (07:12):
Now, come on, look, look, well they'll all rifle company
when we're all testified they were all at the meeting
where where Kendrick told nobody to touch Santiago as long
as you stipulate no one was in Dawson and Downy's
room five minutes later. Oh okay, great, yeah there we
we'll find him and take that money from him, if
you promise not to look in our room five minutes
(07:32):
later when we're just handing it back, when I nod
my head, you hit it. But yeah, all that.
Speaker 3 (07:39):
No, but it's it's good that this kind of comes
to it. Still, got to figure out what the hell's
going on in Cincinnati, though. We'll get to that. We'll
be on to Cincinnati, we'll be on now here. It
is tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (07:51):
We'll make our super Bowl picks, our AFC NFC championship
game in super Bowl picks. But right now, Mike and
I are going to give you one surprise playoff team
in each conference. Okay, and I'll kick things off in
the AFC. And they're a team that the more the
more I look at them, the more I believe that
(08:11):
they are going to be much better than people anticipate.
In a the right kind of change can surprise a
lot of opponents for a year. Right, if a team
makes enough changes for a year, you'll be able to
surprise opponents, especially play in a week Division Tennessee Titans
playoff team this year, that I finally sold you on
(08:34):
my love of Will Levice. But Will Levis was good
last year. He flashed, right, he flashed, so you see
that clearly he has the talent and he loves mayonnaise,
so you know he's He's got a very special place
in my heart. Brian Callahan is exactly what he needs
right to draw out what is from him. You've verified
it wasn't bo. It's not Bo Cala. When we go
into birthday parties for what was, well, he don't need
(08:54):
a matter party. You're just hearing the show up at the meeting. Look,
you're talking about Calvin Ridley, Tony Pollard, a couple of additions, Okay,
but these are huge additions for a team that already
had a couple of good playmakers. They'll be sneakily good.
They don't play in a great division. They overhauled their roster.
A different offense philosophy. Their biggest weakness last year defensive backs,
(09:15):
the secondary. They made a lot of changes. It can work.
They will be an under the radar team that we go.
How are they winning every week seventeen, fourteen, twenty to sixteen,
twenty four to twenty. But they will do it. They
will do it enough to sneak in the playoffs. Became
a big believer that Levis can take another little leap
and he has enough weapons to win a division that
honestly is a little overrated. So gimme the Titans to
(09:39):
be a surprise playoff team in the afhide.
Speaker 3 (09:41):
Dig the cut of year, Jim, I am looking straight
down the road here and beautiful sofar stadium. I'm gonna
take harball. I'll buy in that there's a wild card
berth that the run, toughness, all of that equates to
enough wins to eke in to the playoffs. In a
crowd AFC. It'll be a dogfight because it's gonna come
(10:03):
down to the final two weeks. So get your popcorn
ready because there's gonna be four or five teams buying
for those final slots.
Speaker 1 (10:09):
But I'm looking at.
Speaker 3 (10:11):
The receiving court obviously it is bereft of the big
names that you become accustomed to, a couple of guys
that are reclamation project guys, like we talked about McConkey,
we talk about Josh Palmer. A couple of guys that
I think can make an impact. You've got bookend tackles
that get things going for Justin Herbert and a run
game even if those other guys don't stay healthy. Yeah,
(10:32):
gust the bus and JK. Dobbins brought in Hassan Haskins.
Speaker 1 (10:35):
It's like Harbro's going who was pretty good that ran
the ball from Hey, Mike Hart is gonna come in
and Ben, You're gonna find a bunch of guys.
Speaker 3 (10:42):
And then you got Vidal and he's this sneaky back
end fantasy gun because he's the last man standing.
Speaker 1 (10:47):
Yeah, but he was. He also was, but for all
the pub he got in the preseason, he wasn't great.
You know, I mean, you're still coming in with.
Speaker 3 (10:54):
It's also the preseason. Yeah, yeah, I'll take it all
with a grain of salt.
Speaker 1 (10:57):
Yeah, but signing Hassan Haskins, I'm like, wow, real, okay, no, no, no.
Speaker 3 (11:01):
No, no, no, that is preemptively looking over at the guys
that you got from your brother. Owen fancy knowing that
you're going to need as many capable bodies as you get.
Speaker 1 (11:11):
I did no research. My brother told me these guys
were good. They haven't played in the game in a
full season in their entire career. That's the thing that
my brother without getting on the internet over the dinner party.
Oh so you want to so Gus Edwards, okay, and JK. Dobbins,
let me just get No, you don't even get online, don't.
I'll say it right now. Yeah, No, they're good, really, yes, okay,
they call the one guy the bus. I'm not opening
(11:32):
my computer. I'm not. I trust you, I'm not opening
my computer.
Speaker 3 (11:35):
It's a bit of a reach, and maybe I drink
a little bit of the kool aid, but I think
the way they want to construct this offense, we get
enough balance and the defense gives you enough to get
you over all. Right now, and you just signed Dick
or the kicker for twenty two million.
Speaker 1 (11:52):
A lot of money. You're paying a kicker more than
anybody except our quarterbacks. Exactly now. I wanted Mary Mack
to take the music out because I'm going to tell
you something very seriously, and I want you to take
me seriously. I want you to look at me and
understand that I have nothing but your best interests at heart. Okay,
understand being to say this, and I believe it. And
I know the show before us got a new guy.
(12:13):
He doesn't work this one. Come in if you would,
Let's meet the brand new co host. But let me
tell you this, Mary, do we have do we have
a song for? To help Mike Carmen with my NFC
surprise playoff team pick now, I was playing the song no, no,
what's there's no song playing? No, I'm saying the I
had the beta right, no, and then there was no music.
(12:36):
And then then I asked you, hey, have a song
by that group that I told you about. That's the
name of the city in the third largest market in
the country.
Speaker 3 (12:46):
Do you know the third largest marketing country the second
city path Fish Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (12:53):
Yeah the way You want a song of Chicago? Yeah yeah,
buy them? Yeah, there's a song GUK of Chicago. Yes,
they're very pop. They're in the seventies and eighties. Wait
what they're very popular? Wait what's the song again? You
get twenty five or six to four?
Speaker 3 (13:06):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (13:06):
You can give me a l that doesn't matter. Saturday
in the Park, it doesn't matter. You can even get
anything by Peter Sata in his solo career. Yes, Peter
Sata is, Yes, he's the lead singer. Get it all
for the glory of going back to Karate Kid Part six.
But I'm telling you, Chicago Bears playoff this year just
(13:27):
like the Florida State fan last night.
Speaker 3 (13:30):
Book it Chicago. Look you heard it, Mary, you got
it on tape. Offensively, it goes wrong, you know what
you gotta do. Chicago is loaded, man, they are. They
made all the right moves on offense. They surrounded Caleb
Williams with so much talent. They go three deep at receiver.
They have the established star, they have the aging star,
(13:51):
they have the young star. They're deep at running back.
Speaker 1 (13:54):
You're talking about a guy last year and Rashawn Johnson
they drafted to be the number one guy. He's the
number three guy. And of course this is in the
Sheryl Swoops conversation. I'm going to mention Caleb Williams, who
the NFL isn't ready for. He's gonna be a problem
right away, and every week we're gonna look and say,
look at this wow throw by Caleb Williams on the
run looking one way facing the other. His foot is
(14:17):
entirely bent in the opposite direction, and here's a touchdown
path to Dj Moore in the back of the end
zone on the other side of the field. The Bears
offense is loaded. Now on defense, they'll struggle a little bit,
but once because it's a it's a new defensive back room,
and they need a little bit of time because of
injuries and and everything. This summer. I saw a lot
of the guys saying, hey, just give us a little
(14:38):
bit of time. But this is a pretty good defense, man.
If you get that, and this is a really good
offense after if it was on after the first episode,
I didn't because I stopped because it was so boring.
Don't bring up something bad with the Bears when I'm
saying something good about the Bears. What the hard knocks
bad Bears season? Good? No, but their defense is pretty good.
I look, they taught, they talked, They talk big about
(14:59):
how in the top five defense, But you know, secondary
is a big deal. Getting guys back and getting them
healthy and having them time to gel. They're gonna be
in a lot of shootouts early. The defense will be
better later and the Bears are going to the playoffs.
Your Bears are going to the playoffs. My Bears. There
will be a Saturday in the Park in Chicago in
December with a playoff game.
Speaker 3 (15:21):
Now, you know they do start off against your Titans. Yeah,
that's okay, three games against the twenty games.
Speaker 1 (15:27):
There's twenty five games in the season. Now, if everybody's fine, don't.
Speaker 3 (15:30):
Worry about it, the as andine nature of the scheduling
mechanism anymore. They for their first six or seven games
are against the the AFC South. All right, my team
going deep? Ready, Okay, it finally clicks for Kyler Murray.
Oh that desert. I am going deep and it's wow
(15:52):
receiving it's right. Oh, we're going crazy, right, we're going
a little bit off the grid. Yeah, you know we're
not going and chalk. Okay, sure, sure, because there's just
a lot of teams that are in the middle, and
you can argue many of them for a division title.
Speaker 1 (16:08):
I'm not arguing for Arizona to get to you.
Speaker 3 (16:11):
No, No, this is a surprise playoff time for an eight
eight and one sure and one back door.
Speaker 1 (16:18):
You had a tie, that damn it. You could go
eight eight and one.
Speaker 3 (16:22):
I'd feel, really I would, because that would mean Tyler
Murray got through the scene.
Speaker 1 (16:26):
Right, smart guy, where's the tie? Tell me where the
tie is? All ready? Tell me? Tell me? Although doesn't
Arizona Seattle sounds like a tie waiting to have? I
think so, like Arizona Seattle in Arizona late game on
a Sunday only one going on at the end, that
game sounds like.
Speaker 3 (16:41):
I gotta be honest, that was the other team I
was kind of considering, but I didn't want to hurt
you because I know you already fired their coach.
Speaker 1 (16:46):
Well, he's not ready, he's not ready. I mean, it
has five fights in a day. Don't we go to
double overtime? No, that's it, that's it. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (16:51):
I think that's the one that that stands out right.
I mean, or maybe a game against the Panthers that
could be a tie. December eighth, Yeah, Seahawks at Cardinals.
Speaker 1 (17:03):
Yeah, there you go, there's your tie, there's your TI
there's your time only game left only one going on,
getting deep into Sunday night football pre show to where hey,
we're not watching the very beginning there you go. There's
your time. So there it is our surprise playoff teams
for this year in the NFL. Twitter At how about
a fresca at swollen down? The Jason Smith Show with
my best friend Mike Carmon. The Jason Smith Show with
(17:25):
my best friend Mike Carmon live from the tiraq dot
Com studios. So there's our surprise playoff teams. We got
more football on the way history made today, but not
the kind of football history a team really wanted to make.
It's next right here, Jason and Mike Fox Sports Radio.

met Dan Byer on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts and

Speaker 3 (18:17):
Welcome back in Jason Smith Show with Me Mike Carmon
live from the tire rac dot Com Fox Sports Radio Studios.
Less than forty eight hours will be either it's stolen
the virtues or cursing NFL players and teams and fantasy
decisions that you made. But in the interim I got
(18:38):
Smith dancing down the hallway if you lost the bets one.
Speaker 1 (18:41):
If you are cursing fantasy decisions after the first game
of the season, you're in trouble.
Speaker 3 (18:46):
Don't you normally do that before you leave your draft? Anyway,
at least twice I hate my team. Oh yeah, yeah yeah,
But see I always like my team after it's done.
See I I generally have one or two guys where
I'm immediately like something is already pushed me down a
deep dark path that I've screwed up a position.
Speaker 1 (19:04):
Hands of it. You said, going down a deep dark path.
Well that's my life right now. That gets us to
our next guest joining us now in the hot Line,
longtime MLB Network insider, friend of the show, co host
of Sterensy and The Pope, The Morning Show, sweeping the country. Yeah,
he's on Twitter at John Morosi. It is the aforementioned
(19:25):
John Paul Morosi. Pope. What's happening man?
Speaker 4 (19:27):
I'm doing great, my friends. I wonder which of you
will have I'm on RAS Saint Brown starting for them
in the first first week of the season.
Speaker 1 (19:36):
Got to have a top five pick to get him. Wow. Now, now,
now tell us the truth. Did you just look up
who that was right before you come on the air
with us?
Speaker 5 (19:45):
No? No, you forget, you forget.
Speaker 4 (19:50):
Every week last year I predicted they would win twenty
seven to fourteen, and then I watched eagerly to see
if I'd be correct, and a couple of times I
felt pretty good. I think about it. The Lions had
a great season. I predicted him to win every single week,
and so by that measure, I was well above five
(20:11):
hundred as a as a pro football predictor.
Speaker 1 (20:14):
You picked them to score twenty seven points every week.
Every week there was that maybe in a short week, yeah,
short we coming back on Thursday, short week, twenty four points.
Speaker 5 (20:24):
Okay, Well I had to actually go back and think
about how many times they actually hit twenty seven. There
were definitely I actually remember this I was. I was
driving to I was driving to Cooperstown for the for
the Hall of Fame reveal in mid January, as Lions
(20:47):
are playing the Buccaneers in the playoffs, and I remember
I literally exited off of a small town in New
York because they were about to win that game twenty
seven to fourteen or whatever. It was close, and I
basically said, I need to call into Fox Sports Radio
at this moment in time and just like Mark, mark
(21:08):
the history, because I was almost.
Speaker 4 (21:10):
Gonna be right. And as I look at it right now, yeah,
it looks like they scored. Yeah they never scored twenty seven,
but they did score twenty six against the Raiders on
October thirtieth. Then it'll win. So I was close.
Speaker 1 (21:23):
All right, now you mentioned history. Now I have to
throw this by. I know, Harmon said, going to me,
John Paul's not gonna want to talk about Buddy's gonna
have to because it's a thing. It's no longer a
question of if. But just by how many losses the
White Sox set the record for worst record in MLB history.
If I put the over under for losses of them
(21:44):
at one hundred and twenty five, John Paul are you
taking the over or the under at this point, the
over the over.
Speaker 4 (21:51):
It's it's unbelievable, really and its it's actually remarkable at
the And this is just sort of part of the
sports fans mindset. How we've got Otani at a bid
for fifty to fifty and Judge nearing sixty homers again,
all of these big market teams involved in fascinating division races,
(22:16):
and yet the White Sox are one of the most
fascinating stories in baseball. And people forget Grady Sizemore is
the manager of this team. And at some point I
almost want him to just put himself into the game
and pinch it himself for someone.
Speaker 5 (22:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (22:35):
Yeah, just just like when Corbyn Burnson activated himself in
Major League too, when he owned.
Speaker 4 (22:40):
The type we're getting. We're getting to that point because
at least at least set some other records. I suppose
to just the losses. Let's see the first player manager
in the major leagues in a couple two or three decades.
That this would be fun. But guys, the play tonight,
(23:01):
the myths pop up, it's just it keeps going and
going with no apparent end in sight. I'll say this though,
sometimes when when you get right up to the end
of it, strange things will happen. The Tigers in three,
you know, in a game that would have tied them
(23:21):
with the sixty two Mets. They were losing eight nothing
to a team that won the division and the Twins,
and the Tigers came back and won that game nine
to eight, And so sometimes it's strange.
Speaker 1 (23:35):
Yeah, I don't know how strange I was John Paul
as if, Well, really they came back that much down
to win that game and that was all one were
legit and above board. Yeah, that was the game that
always struck me as.
Speaker 5 (23:48):
Hey, hey, listen, legit was that.
Speaker 4 (23:50):
I think that was a legitimately one game by the
Detroit Tigers of Alan Trammel, and I believe when you
looked at that at that roster, more than a handful
of players when they played that last game, that was
the last game they ever played in the major leagues.
That was that was it? I think? Yeah. Warren Morris.
(24:13):
Warren Morris added second for the Tigers in Game one
sixty two, started at second base and never played in
the major leagues again. He added second in that game.
Speaker 1 (24:24):
How about that? That's piece of knowledge for it is right.
Speaker 3 (24:27):
That is well art trivia, all right, So as we
get down the stretch here, right, we're talking about health
and everything else. Are we going to see Clay Gershaw
again before the season ends?
Speaker 4 (24:38):
My goodness, that is a massive question. And I think
you could also in this overall conversation about the Dodgers
pitching staff, you could put Glassnow's name that in that
blank Now, I think Yamamoto was getting a little closer,
so there's a little more positivity. And by the way, tonight,
for me, I realized a lot of focus on the
(24:59):
return of Otan to Orange County. But for me, the
fact that Walker Buehler was able to give them at
least five solid innings was really important for them. He's
not the ace or the Coece that got them to
the World Series in twenty twenty, but they need some
more stability in this rotation, and with Kershaw, the struggles
(25:21):
for him to even it sounds like, walk comfortably and
just do basic athletic things. It's a real struggle right
now for Kershaw and the Dodgers. So it's hard to guess,
but I would I would say it's no more than
just a flip of the coin somewhat distant possibility that
(25:43):
we see him as as a difference maker for them
in October. And that's what the standard is here. It's
not can we hope and see if maybe he comes
back for a couple of innings in October. That's not
who they need. It's apparent to me right now that
the guy they were hoping he would be that his
body's just not letting him do it. And that's not
(26:05):
his fault, it's not anyone's fault. It's just that's that's
where he's at physically right now. And so for the Dodgers,
if they're going to advance, it's gonna have to be
with Stone and potentially even Bueller, but certainly Yamamoto. They
hope Glass, now, they hope Clarity. That's gonna be the
group that has to get them through. And I think
(26:26):
Kershaw at this point is a bonus if everything goes perfectly.
Speaker 1 (26:31):
John Paul Morose the MLB Network Insider with us the
Jason Smith and with Mike Carmon Live the tyrec dot
Com Studios. All right, John Paul, I will ask this,
even though I know we're going to lose a listener,
because my dad is going to turn off the radio.
I want to ask this question. Uh the Yankees, Oh boy,
Clay Holmes blows his eleventh save of the season tonight,
a walk off Grand Slam. Rangers beat the Yankee seven
(26:54):
to four. For all the positives the Yankees have going
for them, they just seem to new ways to get
a leak in their ship. And now the back end
of the bullpen has been so unbelievably shaky. Where do
you make where the Yankees are right.
Speaker 2 (27:09):
Now with this?
Speaker 4 (27:11):
This is an issue that is not going away for them.
And and you think back, and there have been other teams.
I reflect back on Brad Ledge with the nine Phillies.
They're able to get to the World Series still, but
you had a really good closer, great closer who just
had a really bad year in Lyge's case. And it
feels like the same thing is happening with Holmes. And
(27:33):
in this case, again, you're so far into the season now,
the trade deadline is well past us. They don't if
they had a better option in the ninth inning, they
would have gone to him by now. That's that's what
I'm seeing. They've they've cycled through different options and during
the course of the year, signing players who were discarded elsewhere.
(27:55):
It's and I think part of it too, is is
their rotation. The moment is not really built to give
you seven innings every time out there. They're having to
go earlier with some of their bridge pitchers to give
them options. And I think it's It's left the situation
where they need Holmes to be great and he simply
hasn't been. And now, of course a comfortable win for
(28:18):
the Orioles tonight over the White Sox, the Orioles now
are the team where a half game lead in the
American Leaguees, which I did not expect to be saying
right now. I thought there were moments in the last
couple of weeks where I felt as though the Yankees
were starting to get a little bit of separation and
things going in their direction. But I just think there's
not enough, not nearly enough certainty with this bullpen. I
(28:41):
think Kinley's been good for them during the course of
the year. Weaver, I think, has been a guy that's
given them multiple innings and very very solidly so. But
tonkin has already been moved on. Tim Hill, the lefty
is having now a more prominent role Mark Leier Junior
has been. Really I think a little disappointing is coming
up over at the trade trade deadline that they brought
(29:02):
Tim Maza back in from the Blue Jays. There's a
lot of guys they're counting on, and really none of
whom I feel are are necessarily what they need. And
they also they also have to hope they get something
back from from Louis Heeler or Schmidt because they could
potentially be options for them in the playoffs. But again
they're still both on the I L So a lot
of questions right now for the New York Yankees.
Speaker 1 (29:24):
Maybe they just moved Dave Getty to closer that might
say your.
Speaker 4 (29:27):
Problems, you could do both right, They're that strategy worked
with with Mariolo Rivera, Ramiro Mendoza once upon a time,
get very few us. How about that you did not
think that this conversation would include I'm on Ross Saint
Brown and Ramiro Mendoza that we have by the odds
(29:48):
yet again.
Speaker 3 (29:49):
Yeah, Ramiro Mendoza though one of those great middle relievers when.
Speaker 4 (29:53):
Hold Morris, by the way Warren Moore and Warren.
Speaker 3 (29:56):
Morris never playing again in the Major League, exact the final.
Speaker 4 (30:00):
Game of three.
Speaker 3 (30:01):
All right, JP, last one Big NFL previews show forty
eight hours until we get things kicked off. We're doing
surprise playoff teams. You got one or.
Speaker 4 (30:10):
Two for us surprise playoff teams in the National Football League.
Speaker 1 (30:14):
You're saying, yes, sir, or you want to do surprise
playoff teams in Major League Baseball? Yeah?
Speaker 4 (30:17):
I know, if let's do either in in Major League Baseball?
Could I even say that that that in this case,
the Mets are still a surprise.
Speaker 5 (30:29):
I'm sure.
Speaker 4 (30:31):
Because to me they have all the momentum right now.
Jason the Francisco Lindor, I think what he's been able
to do has been really impressive of late, a thirty
homer season, the fifth of his career. Only A Rod
has more thirty homer seasons as a primary shortstop. So
good on Lindor. Actually, the Tigers are are sort of
(30:53):
that peripheral team that might actually be be one that
that makes some noise late. I still think it's a
long shot, but they're playing a lot better. All right,
here we go, so long shot NFL playoff teams. All right,
this will be preserved only if I'm correct. If I'm wrong,
then it's just among friends.
Speaker 1 (31:13):
Right.
Speaker 4 (31:14):
So I've got I've got the Cleveland Browns being they're
they're they're maybe on the cusp of being a solid
playoff team, but they seem to be at least a
little bit down in the Super Bowl odds. So I've
got I'm gonna go all Midwest here, the Cleveland Browns
and the Chicago Bears. I've got the Bears. I know that,
you know, a change over it at quarterback in the
(31:34):
last couple of years. I get that, But I think
that they will find a way with this new energy
around the Bears to squeak into the playoffs. That's my
that's my It's a long shot prediction, but that's what
you ask for. So I've got the Bears and the
Browns as both being playoff teams this year.
Speaker 1 (31:49):
How about that you and me both have the Bears, Buddy, Yeah,
I feel pretty good, JP, I feel pretty good about that. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (31:55):
Like and and by the way, this this game on
Saturday at Michigan Stadium, I tend to think Texas wins
it twenty to thirteen. That's my Texas twenty Michigan thirteen.
Just to prove to you that this is not just
pro Detroit and pro Michigan bias on this, on this conversation,
I'm predicting a seven point Longhorns win.
Speaker 1 (32:16):
He's on Twitter at John Morosi, That is at John Morosi,
MLB Network insider extraordinaire John Paul I sent you a
note for the next time you talk to Sternsey. Nice
job in the pitching lab with David Peterson. You don't
give up on left handed pitchers. Very nice.
Speaker 4 (32:30):
I will let him know, David Peterson, the change up
has been better, the sinker has been better. And I
had no idea, by the way, that the current spread
for that Texas Michigan game was Texas minus seven and
a half.
Speaker 5 (32:40):
I just I just thought it was going to be jail.
Speaker 4 (32:43):
There you go, seven point win for the Longhorns.
Speaker 1 (32:45):
All right, see you, buddy. Enjoy the games this week.
Hey JP, there goes John pal Morosi. I mean, wait
that the Tigers are right on the Royals tail. I
mean they have played. Look, this is what when you
get to September. If you're playing five hundred baseball, and
I don't mean like five games under no, if you
were right, if you're a game over at five, you
are in it, you're in it. That's how it works
(33:07):
in baseball now, and you're the Tiger. Like, whoa, we're
talking about how hot the royalsmen? Look at the Tigers man,
Holy crap, I mean they're right there.
Speaker 3 (33:15):
One game over five hundred, entering tonight four and a
half games off the pace into for that first wild
Card slot.
Speaker 1 (33:24):
Exit out about a fresco exit swollen down The Jason

(33:58):
some big NFL stuff coming your way in about twenty minutes,
but how about we reflect on the two biggest stories
of the night right now, stuff that we've seen unfold
over the course of the last couple of hours the
Miller Maws story. No, well we did, we did? I
just again, man, I just keep thinking about all the
bad things my roommate might have done to me in
my and now I keep thinking, okay, after that, when
(34:21):
I had roommates out of college, when I had roommates,
when I worked at ESPN, Like, did I really pissed
somebody off that much? Where that could have been done
to my you know, Mike Pillow could have been grabbed
and farted on allegedly. I mean, I don't know.
Speaker 3 (34:33):
Now, you just want to go forth every day and
live your best life. I don't know, man, all of
you out there, wherever you may be listening, however you're listening,
we appreciate you.
Speaker 1 (34:42):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (34:43):
Man, be good to each other and yourselves. No, I mean,
it's a fun night. We're less than forty eight hours
from the kickoff of the NFL.
Speaker 1 (34:51):
We're NFL Eve Eve Congratulations, We're almost there. Double almost
made it double but story number one of the night,
and oh boy again. I always want my dad to
listen to the show. But there's certain times I understand Dad,
when you when you can't listen, you can't listen. Dad,
I know you're listening. I will allow you to put
your hands over your ears for the next thirty five
(35:14):
seconds while we play this. There it is Rangers Radio Network.
A walk off off of Clay Holmes, the Yankees looking
to win to stay in first place in the Al East.
Holmes blows his eleventh save of the season and the
Yankees lose seven to four.
Speaker 3 (35:32):
Another fantastic start from Rodin that gets lost. Six innings,
eleven strikeouts, one herd run.
Speaker 1 (35:39):
You know this is this is mine. This is why
the Yankees. I can't buy them. I can't buy them
really seriously, even though on paper they are the best team.
I can't buy them because it's not just about navigating
the ninth inning, right, it's not like serious. Do they
have a problem. Yes, no, no they do because Clay Oh,
you can't blow eleven saves and be the closer. Only
(36:01):
Edwin Diaz can do that.
Speaker 3 (36:02):
Well, that's like White Sox Tarry can't you can't blow Oh,
you can blow eleven saves with the White Sox.
Speaker 1 (36:07):
You're going to the Ring of Honor as an individual. Yeah, no,
you're going in the Ring of Honor if you're in
the White Sox at that baton dah, you get one.
You blew one last Tuesday, not your turn. Every pitch
of the White Sockx have had this season has blown
at least five saves, even the starting pitchers. Uh. But
it's not just the ninth inning, which is a difficult
thing now for the Yankees. They used to be so
(36:28):
dominant in the ninth inning, whether it was Rivera or
Roaldas Chapman for a couple of years, and now that's
become an area of weakness. But this is why it's
hard for me to buy the Yankees as big time
contenders and hey, this team that should get out of
the americanly get to the World Series, because every few
weeks there's always something that comes up that makes you
stop and say, oh wow, they really they really have
(36:52):
to overcome this if they're gonna be good. And sometimes
it's their starting pitching just completely just plops out on them.
Sometimes it's the bullpen. Sometimes it's nobody but Aaron Judge
hits the ball. It's just every else. It's every few
weeks something happens that makes you go, oh wow, the
Yankees are in trouble, and you know, they rite the
(37:12):
ship and they they've stayed twenty games over five hundred
for a while. They've been a five hundred team for
a while. Now they got out big and they've been
twenty games over for a while. But you need to
you know, you're into September now and it needs to
be Okay, we're getting to the playoffs where we're battening
things down. You're not a team that's trying to squeak
in with deficiencies, right, You're not the Mets or the
(37:33):
Braves with injuries, or the Tigers or the Rooss. No,
you're a team that eight we should be a World
Series favorite. So what are our weaknesses. Let's start taking
care of them. But like every couple of weeks, something
new comes up. It's like the Yankees are a are
a car that you buy that is brand new and
it's great, but then oh I gotta go in. Oh
that the brakes need to be aligned. Okay, we're all
aligning the brakes. Oh wait a minute, we got a
(37:53):
tail light that's out. Okay, we got to fix that.
Oh wait, we need a new battery. Like every few weeks,
something happens with the Yankees that really puts a break
on their advancement and it's different all the time. And
now the ninth inning we talked to John Palm Morosi.
These things are not going away. So this is a
big thing to deal with. But like, I can't say
that all the Yankee is gonna take care of their
(38:14):
things be an overwhelming favorite. That's what It's hard for
me to say, Yes, I see them in the World Series.
I can't.
Speaker 4 (38:19):
No.
Speaker 3 (38:20):
But that's that's the beauty and the terror of this
season for a lot of teams. Do we can play
that game with many of the would be contenders going
on down the road right because they're battling Baltimore in
Division Baltimore the last month and a half, a lot
of lackluster play. We have to talk lock and forward
down on Monday nights sometimes, you know, because of the
(38:40):
way they've operated, again in the bullpen being a big
part of that as well. But you know, in yankee Ville,
you've got so many guys on the il. You've got
players that were once upon a time great hitters like
DJ Lemayhew who suddenly forgot how to hit, and the
organization didn't go to bullpen and say the figured in
(39:02):
bullpen of course to say hey, Jason, you know you're
you're the kid, You're.
Speaker 1 (39:07):
The martian, come on up and help this law offense.
Right now. He was the guy that was supposed to
be coming up Domingez. Right, you're not meeting the Staten
Island kids with a little league doing that. You're doing
all everything wrong, man, everything wrong.
Speaker 3 (39:19):
But like he was supposed to be the guy coming
to September and then he doesn't get called up. So
you got a lot of ill will towards the organization
as well, just saying you got other things that might
help help, but your September and towards the playoffs. And
this is what we get. So a little frustration with
Cashman and Boone once again.
Speaker 1 (39:38):
I mean every few weeks it's something that makes you
stop and think, that's not You're not going to navigate
October with this, and then something it gets patched over,
and then something else comes up. You're not going to
navigate October with this. And this is the because we're
talking about teams for the World Series. Is like if
this was squeaking in the playoffs, you squeak in the
playoffs when you have a lot of a lot of faults.
(40:00):
But that's why, like the Yankees, all they look so intimidate. Yeah,
well really it's Aaron Judge having that season and it's
a lot of patchwork and trying to figure things out.
I mean, is it's just too leaky. They leak every
few weeks. And that's the problem.
Speaker 3 (40:12):
It's way too much that we're able to do that
while we're seeing them with the record that they've been
able to post, right when you're talking about an eighty
win team with a month left in the season. Now
they're not running away and hiding, and Baltimore's been there
step for step, but with so many teams, like we're
looking at the Dodgers, right they're having this run, but
we're still worried about what the rotation looks like. Like
(40:34):
we were talking about a little bit earlier of trying
to figure out exactly who's in, who's out Glass now Yamamoto,
Clayton Kershaw, whether he's getting able to walk. And literally
as we say this, they're they're battling one of those
down the road series against the Angels and Mookie Betch
just hit a ball like five hundred feet so in
the tenth inning. Now they've got a sixty lead. So
(40:56):
every time we get nervous about them. It's like they
go on a winning streak to that asks some of
those things, and then, like a marine layer here in
southern California, it burns off in the middle of the afternoon.
Speaker 1 (41:07):
Suddenly the sun's out, like, oh okay, here we are. Uh.
Speaker 3 (41:11):
And I think the Yankees, the Dodgers, and teams several
other teams have that same effect where you start going
to the sky is falling. Then they win a few
few games, so it's kind of riding a roller coaster.
Speaker 1 (41:24):
At this point. And it's and I can't I can't
see them fixing so much. They're gonna enter the postseason
with a lot of flaws and they'll be one of
x amount of teams that you think can win the
World Series. But it's gonna be a couple of team
to squeak and you go, Okay, they're gonna be out
in the first round, but they're not gonna be the favorite.
It's not like, well, the Dodgers get in, they fix
their stuff, they're gonna be a big favorite, though. The
(41:45):
Yankees will be just like the Astros or the Guardians
or the Orioles or anybody else that gets into the playoffs,
and hey, okay, that that they're they're on equal footing
with those teams.
Speaker 3 (41:55):
Yeah, in September, hope, wal it's okay. Now the other well,
he's good if he just went to bed tonight and
he'll be fine, Oka because he'll wake up till in
the morning. Yeah, because the thing is the bullpen is
always the worst thing with him. Oh ya again Don
Walt's obsession with bullpens for a while. They could lose
a game one nothing where the run is given up
by the starting pitcher in the first thing he would say, Ah,
(42:15):
the bullpen was just terrible for us.
Speaker 1 (42:17):
Tonight is terrible for us.
Speaker 6 (42:18):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (42:19):
The other big story of the night looking and this
is going to prove a really big point. The Aces
beat the Sky tonight WNBA ninety to seventy one. It
was a runaway for the Aces from the jump. The
Sky were never really in this game. The headline's going
to be another double double for Angel Rees right, twelve points,
sixteen rebounds, four for twelve from the floor. Okay, we've
(42:43):
talked that this is what she does. She can't shoot, right,
she can't shoot. And I'm gonna say this because I
feel like I'm not picking on Angel Reese, but just
the way that we feel and people feel like if
I talk about Caitlin Clark, I have to talk about
Angel Reaes.
Speaker 4 (42:57):
Right.
Speaker 1 (42:57):
But let's just say because watching this game tonight, like
you and I did, you could watch all of the games,
or you could watch one game. Well, you could watch
the last Caitlyn Clark game and you could watch this
Angel Reese game. And there is no doubt who affects
the game more between Caitlyn Clark and Angel Rees. Caitlyn
(43:18):
Clark affects the game three times as much as Angel
Reese does. Angel Reese gets a lot. She's a great rebounder.
She's a great rebound I'm not even talking about you
in the offense. No, no, Sometimes rebounds come in there really
not contested, and she grabs it. Sometimes she goes in
and she fights between three players and gets rebounds. So
she gets the rebounds, right, she does. Whatever you want
(43:38):
to say about the rebounds she gets more than anybody
knows she is. She is a great rebounder. But that's
really what she does. Caitlyn Clark affects the game so
many other ways by scoring, by passing. She also picks
up rebounds and steals and assists, and you have to
you have to create your defense to figure out and
guard against what she does, which really open things up
(44:01):
for Leah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell. They're terrific players too,
And now this Fever team, I don't want to play them.
They got They're a strong, three headed monster. And it's
all because, hey, it's pick your poison, because Caitlyn Clark
has turned into a point guard that is not just
a shoot first player, but she leads the league and assists,
and people forget about that for every double double, fra injuries,
Hey double doubles for Katelyn Clark leads a league and assists.
(44:22):
You just have to watch one game and see, I
see exactly how Caitlin Clark affects this game, the pressure
she puts on the team every time her team is
on offense. Angel Reese, that's not the case. That's not
the case. You have to be able to shoot, you
have to be a threat offensively. They don't run a
lot of plays for you can't when you shoot four
for twelve, four for thirteen, four for fourteen. And she's
got an opportunity this year even more of an opportunity
(44:44):
for than Caitlyn Clark because her and Kamilla Cardoso came
into this into this year saying, hey, you're the stars
of the team now, so going you guys have carte blanche, right,
this is what we have. We drafted you two to
be the cornerstones of this team. And look, Camilla Cardoso
and Angel Reese are going to be superstars in double
and they're gonna help carry the league for the next
ten years. They've gotten a lot more opportunity to do
(45:06):
what they can with it because they're the biggest players.
Where Caitlin Clark has come in, Hey we've got a
couple of really good players on this team here, and
now fit your way in and now figure out your
way to dominate. And she's done that, so someone who's
had to come in and kind of and kind of
carve out her role a little bit more like she
doesn't get the respect for that because it's like, oh,
you're joining a team and it's just shot after shot
(45:28):
because the team is terrible, and it's a little bit
of a different circumstance for the both of them.
Speaker 3 (45:32):
Well, if Caitlin Clark wanted to, I mean, and we
talked about it. And there have been certain games where
you just say, why are you not shooting the ball
in the fourth quarter?
Speaker 4 (45:40):
Why?
Speaker 3 (45:40):
We've had a couple of those instances where it's like
she's taken one shot in the final eight minutes of
a game and done nothing but the quote right basketball play. Okay,
whatever we go through. But there's no question if she
just wanted to shoot twenty five times a game, she
can set scoring record.
Speaker 1 (46:00):
You could do that. Not gonna be a very good team.
I think she's the number nine leading scorer in the NBA.
Speaker 3 (46:07):
Aren't going to come, you know, round to her defense.
Speaker 1 (46:11):
That's one of the criticisms.
Speaker 3 (46:12):
But they seem to have gotten a much better rapport
as the season's going on. And and this just came
through from the at W NBA Twitter account. With the
Chicago Sky loss and an Atlanta Dream loss, the Innana
Fever have secured their place in the twenty twenty four
WNBA playoffs. Wow, now you saw their odds to win
(46:36):
the title when they had the Olympic break where they
were out one hundred to one as of this morning,
eighteen to one.
Speaker 1 (46:43):
Look out, hopefully you got those odds. Did you get
those odds? They'll get those odds. Look at that those odds.
I mean a lot of excitement to it.
Speaker 3 (46:50):
And again, different styles, different players, but it keeps tongues wagging,
which is good for the league.
Speaker 4 (46:56):
Right.
Speaker 3 (46:56):
We talked about it a little bit last night coming
out of the the whole Dallas. I'll call it a
fiasco for lack of a better term, as we got swoops.
Speaker 1 (47:06):
Lieberman.
Speaker 3 (47:06):
Liberman did all the media rounds earlier today again popping
up on a bunch of shows. But you know, you
had Wings players just being like, all right, this sucks
that they're coming into our house and cheering for her,
but guess what, it's a packed house. Yeah, and now
we have to convert them by winning games and there'll
be more Wings fans, right because what are they got
(47:30):
nine wins on the year, if they had seventeen.
Speaker 1 (47:34):
Now it's they're realizing that, oh okay, this is kind
of what everybody goes through when your team is bad.
Not as many people come. When your team is good,
more people come. That's it's kind of how it is.
Speaker 3 (47:44):
And if the circuit circus comes to town, it benefits everybody.
And that's what you have with Indiana coming in and
if you're a Wings player or anybody else in the WNBA, Like,
that's what we want, That's what we're trying to build,
and over time maybe as more players come in. I mean,
I saw Holly row was tweeting out before about looking
(48:04):
in advance for Final four tickets for this coming year,
and the get in is forty five hundred dollars.
Speaker 1 (48:11):
Right.
Speaker 3 (48:11):
The anticipation for the women's college season and the players
that will then move into the WNBA is great, So
that momentum keeps flowing and everybody wins, and in the
interim there's a lot of still specious reasoning and arguments
that get made in our world as folks play and watch.
It's kind of like listening to folks talk about football
(48:33):
games that they didn't watch. Right, I saw a quick
highlight package.
Speaker 1 (48:36):
Alright, let's go. I saw it on red zone because
I saw the touchdown, So I was very excited about
that play. Agree really good. Hey, you know, I think
Kyle Yuschek might be the best player in all of
the NFL. I saw him score that touchdown.
Speaker 3 (48:49):
And did you know that their designer clothes made.
Speaker 1 (48:55):
