Jason and Mike react to the biggest news of the day including the Patriots giving Tom Brady their blessing to speak to other teams and Jason believes it's between the Chargers and the Giants. Philip Rivers also hits the free agency market but the guys don't have any faith he can play better on any other team than the Chargers plus the XFL show promise in their first week but can't be scared by losing money in the beginning. Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon on Fox Sports Radio.
So two stories out of the NFL today that don't
seem related, but they are. First No One's big Secret.
The Chargers meet with Philip Rivers and it is officially
announced that the two sides are going their separate ways.

(00:44):
Rivers will become a free agent, which we knew when
he moved to his family from Los Ange from San
Diego to Florida last month, and the Charges are gonna
look for a new quarterback. All this on the day
where Bob Craft and the Patriots say they're okay with
Tom Brady testing free agency again, like they had a choice.
This is not a coincidence, all right, For everyone who
wants to look at Tom Brady's destinations I'll handicap it

(01:07):
for you right now. Now, do do I do? I do? What?
Must you know? There could be the mystery team. Who
you gotta have a mystery team. I mean, I can
give you what the current odds are here. Bernie Fratto
gave him to me a little bit earlier. Bernie Fratto,
he text me a lot of odds. Hey, I got this.
Information is a powerful thing. But I'll look Brady wherever

(01:29):
he goes. And again, remember why I told you he
was leaving. You don't go down this road if you're
not leaving. You don't let anybody hit free agency if
you're not okay with them leaving. But don't you want
a John Cusack moment, someone standing there with the giant
boom box not happening, saying I love you man. No,
Bill Belichick hates all the songs. That doesn't matter. We're
not going to point, not gonna get it. I forgot

(01:50):
about the hatred of music in that analogy. You don't
let a guy hit free agency unless you're okay with
him leaving. And guys don't hit free agency only to
resign with their old team unless they're all time backer
or a defensive back who doesn't get the offers they expect.
And I was looking for three years with thirty six million.
I didn't get it, So I'm back with a one year,
eight million dollar deal with my old team. It happens

(02:11):
with guys that don't get up. But Brady's It's not
like he's not going to get a big offer. The
Chargers don't have a quarterback. They have said goodbye Philip Rivers.
They will give Brady thirty five million dollars. It's two
teams for Philip Rivers. It's the Chargers. It's the Giants, alright.
I told you why the Giants for a long time.
It's the Chargers or the Giants. The Chargers for many
reasons that we see the Giants for reasons I'm gonna

(02:33):
outline for you right now. Brady's not gonna leave Boston
for a smaller market, all right. He's not going to
Tampa Bay. He's not going to Indianapoli. He's not gonna
go to Dallas. Dallas sounds great, but that's not happening either.
He's got to go someplace big, bigger than Boston where
he can still be an icon and Gazelle Bunching can
be an icon where the Brady brand can increase. It's

(02:56):
not gonna increase in Dallas. It'll increase in New York
or in Holly would So it's one of those two places.
It's the Chargers or it's the Giants. He needs the
path of least resistance to the playoffs. It's what he
wants to on on the field. It's about winning championships.
He's got in the NFC East because that division is terrible.
NFC West, Yes, you have to get through the Kansas

(03:17):
City Chiefs, but the Chargers boast so many playmakers, so
many playmakers that that Brady has gotta be salivating, going,
my goodness, when this roster is healthy. It's one of
the top five rosters in the NFL. Look at these
guys that can hand the ball to and throw the
ball to. Yes, you gotta get past the Chiefs, but
you have some kind of roster there. Plus it's Hollywood.

(03:38):
It allows you to push up that TV twelve brand.
Those are the only two places that he is going
to go. Those are the only two places that are
a step up from Boston. He's ready for that next
part of his life. Like Lebron James when he said Okay,
my next destination for me in the NBA could be
my last. I want to make sure I go someplace
where I can now start my next phase now. And

(04:01):
what did Lebron do last year? It was an entire
year of of load maintenance and it was let me
do four new television shows and get a couple of
movie deals done. Now, Okay, that's done. Now I'm into basketball.
And that's what prayd he's gonna do. He's gonna do
the same thing in either l A or New York,
and those are the places for him to do it.
So it's either the l A charges were gonna open
a brand new stadium, the Stadium of Stadiums, or it's

(04:23):
gonna be in New York with the Giants. But it's
gonna be one of those two places. Well, I think
you always have the option of the option CE of
your Las Vegas Raiders, Right, Derek Carr's just a guy.
You're rebuilding that team. You got a lot of speed,
all the analysis of the a f C West. But
here's why, here's why, here's here where everything is legal Vegas.

(04:45):
I get it. But here's where. At that first meeting
with Jon Gruten so John, I'm I'm happy to be here. Yeah, listen,
I'm gonna have this new offense. I'm gonna get you
all the terminology. It's really complex and complicated, but I'm
gonna try to fit you into what we do here
and what want to do here in Las Vegas. Wait,
where are you going? Wait? What do you mean? Well, no,
I'm not going to build the offense around you. What

(05:06):
I built my offense around me. That's what I've been.
So that's why that's not gonna work. That's why that
is completely not gonna work. But that's why I still
hold the door open that he ends up back in
New England. You want to close it and say it's
a final. I say it's a go explore, have your
year abroad, go do your thing, and when you come back,
let's let's talk. And so this is get wood, get

(05:27):
your pitches, and let's have some fun. I mean, the
Chargers for a lot of reasons make sense. You love
the New York thing. Dallas. We we talked about it
a couple of weeks ago, and now it's everybody's hot
on Dallas. Now dek Prescott's either there as a franchised
player or they come to terms when he realizes, you know,
that's the best situation he can be in. So that

(05:49):
I don't see that as a viable option, as much
as it would make a lot of people a lot
of money. But looking at at it going forward, I mean,
look the chargers. That roster is locked and loaded, and
that was the sad thing at times watching Philip not
be able to deliver and for the turnovers to pile up. Right,
that was a guy you wanted the happy ending for

(06:10):
to a degree, right when we talk about longevity and
what he did and the blood guts and dad gumm,
it's that we heard all those years that you wanted
to see it end with a big run, and that
never happened. So yeah, it would make sense to come
to Sophie in between all of those fantastic big concerts

(06:30):
they keep announcing. But I still say he's back in Boston.
The one thing is there, could there be a mystery team? Sure,
there's always that, and there's a mystery team involved that
usually is there to drive up a price. Could there
be a mystery team where there's just some fit that
we don't know about. That's always possible, but I don't
I don't. I don't think that's happening New York, Los Angeles.

(06:51):
That's what it is. Be sure to catch live editions
of The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at
ten pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific on Fox Boards Radio
and the I Heart Radio app. Philip Rivers is now
no longer going to be officially a member of the
l A Chargers. Meeting with GM Tom tal Esco earlier today,

(07:12):
they decided that it was best they thank Philip Rivers
for all the years he played there and and look
it it's it's gonna wind up being a Hall of
Fame career for him when it's all said and done.
He had nothing but good things to say about the team,
the team, and nothing but good things to say about him.
But it's quite obvious the Chargers need to move on.
And again no coincidence that Tom Brady the day we
find out, oh he's gonna be free agent, the Chargers

(07:34):
saying goodbye. I mean, look, this is where it's all
pointing right now. But as I say, watch out for
the Giants, but for Rivers, it's a little bit different
because as much as I'd love to see it succeed,
one of the nice guys in the NFL. Uh. Even
his trash talk is nice, and he's been able to
succeed for a long time, never won. I cringe what

(07:55):
is going to look like for him with a different team,
whether it's Tampa Bay or in Indianapolis or someplace else,
because it's clear that he took a huge step back.
This is just normal erosion as you get older, and
Rivers never had the strongest arm to begin with, and
even with great playmakers, last year he really struggled. Had
his fewest touchdowns in in thirteen years. You know, it's

(08:17):
twenty three and twenty now he's gonna leave and go
to a team with less weapons. I cringe what it
could look like because I'm seeing like one of those
Joe Nameth final seasons where Rivers just gets beat up
physically for five or six weeks and throws picks, has
a couple embarrassing highlights, and then the team says, all right,
we're going to our next quarterback and Rivers sits on
the bench and retires quietly at the end of the year.

(08:39):
I just don't see Rivers having that change of scenery
late in career jump that the other quarterbacks like Brady,
like Breeze, depending on if they stay or go any place,
could have if they joined teams with better weapons. Rivers
was on the team with great weapons, and they're moving
on from him. Brady didn't have great weapons, and he
could have moved to a team that has good ones.
You know, he may be upright a little bit longer

(09:02):
with the Colts, but is he Again, they don't have
what the Chargers have. I mean, they don't And that's
that's the only place I can see because they're indoors
again the offensive line. But right right, he was a
pro bowler with him a few years back. You got
t Y Hilton, who's got his issues with with injuries.

(09:24):
So there's a little danger there. And my guy Jack
Doyle just re upped because but that's just it, I mean,
and that's the hard part I think for Chargers fans,
like today is truly the end of a not just
the Rivers era, but you have the Antonio Gates retirement
as well, So like that just put the final nail
into that era, and you just shove that box away,

(09:46):
uh and move forward. And I think folks are a
little upset at the terms used by spanos in in
the statements to a degree of hey moved on and
things of that, you know, but it's you know, as
ever personal, it's just business, right, go back to New
jack City and Nino Brown. I mean, that's just the
way it works. I my brother's keeper. Yes I am,

(10:07):
and then I'll shoot you. Oh sorry, sport. I mean,
if that'll happen, I mean, and then the other guy
condemns him now and here we go. So you see,
we just recapped it, and Jason, it might go to
the movies in twenty seven seconds here on Fox Sports.
It's it's such a gamble if you're if you're the
Cults or if you're the Bucks and say we're gonna
go in on Philip Rivers. I mean, it's it's really

(10:28):
again because the downside is really but the downs of
his man. We paid him for a year or two
this money, and now we're starting over, and we're starting
over in the middle of the season, and that's that's really.
If I thought he could do it, I would say it,
but I don't think. But here's the thing. Also, though
you look at the offensive line, right, these guys are
now you're on the clock in terms of paying them
because most of these guys are the best at their positions.

(10:50):
So if you sink it up to where you gave
Philip Rivers the two years and it's not Jacoby Prisett,
remember the deal he signed and everybody got all onto wax.
I was mid those low end starter money like that
was that was a nothing contract. That was Jacoby Brisett
wanted to feel a little bit of love. They gave
him a little bit of love and good and good
money relative to what he was making for Philip Rivers.

(11:12):
It's a good spot. Short term sinks up with these
other deals. You take your shot and if it doesn't roll,
you blow it up and start again. Be sure to
catch live editions of The Jason Smith Show with Mike
harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern seven pm Pacific. This weekend,
we saw the re debut of the XFL. Even though
the XFL is treating everything as if it's new. No

(11:33):
stats left over from the first league nearly twenty years ago,
So no one's chasing Tommy Maddox's touchdown record. We're not
gonna get Gastino situation my title back. Uh. And if
you got to see a little bit of the XFL
this week or even on highlights, It's exactly what you
expected with the XFL. Right. You saw the bells and whistles.

(11:56):
You had the access that we don't usually get as
he plays are being looked at what's actually being said,
as replays are being looked at what the coaches are
saying on the sideline. We saw trick plays. We saw
the new rules, especially surrounding kickoffs. We saw our first firing.
Pepper Johnson, defensive coordinator for the Wildcats, was fired after

(12:16):
just one game. I mean the l A l A
Wildcats already fired their DC at the right game. One
of their captains was released. He's a free agent now.
He was the captain coming into the game and he's gone.
You saw the perfect punt by mark Ed King. In
the end, you saw what you expected from the XFL.
Actually I saw it was a little bit less pageantry

(12:36):
than expected, But I kind of like that because in
the end, you can dress this up however you want to,
but it really is about football. You know, you can
only do so much. Okay, you can't go crazy with everything.
I really want to see football, and these different things
are great, but it's all things that I expected from
the XFL. There's I've been seeing so many reasons and

(12:58):
things people are saying over the course of the past
twenty four hours, you need more stars, And yes, would
Colin Kaepernick help? Of course, if you had Kaepernick there,
I'd pay him ten million dollars, You'd sell all his jerseys,
everybody would watch. Kaepernick would bring in an entirely the
new audience of in the millions and millions, because everybody's
gonna want him. But you saw Oliver luck said, beat
it whatever the representative said as a dollar and sense

(13:19):
that they said, it's a lot of dollars and this
don't make sense. You gotta realize you need each other,
you know, and that that's the one guy you could
bring in that people will say, all right, I'm gonna
go watch and see because because you know he would
talk after the game. The NFL is not a real league.
This is a real league. All these things were now.
Having interviewed him before as part of media scrumbs, uh,
sometimes he in an a whole lot to say he

(13:42):
would kind of have to eat, but he'd gone afterward. Guy,
when given the opportunity, then you go into view nessa
then she's a DJ. She have a lot to say,
she always does. That's part of the problem that we
we game down the spiral, right, But the real thing
is not about do they have the bells and whistles?
Do they have the new things you get to see
that you like that we haven't seen in the in

(14:03):
the NFL before. What is needed for the XFL to
become a thing is deep pockets. Right. And a guy
I knew, I'm not gonna say it is a long
time ago because I don't know if his family wants
to know we gambles as much as he does. But
someone that you know, a TV personality that you know
bet love to gamble, and he said, and I have
a system that is full proof. He said, okay, yeah,

(14:25):
was it Pete Rose? Who was not Pete Rose? He said,
I bet the Reds every single game is he said
to me, as long as I have enough to double
every bet until I win. Every time I lose, I
double my next bet, And as long as I have
deep enough pockets and I don't lose twelve in a row,
I'm gonna eventually get back to zero. And then from

(14:46):
there I went. But every time I lose, I double
my bet. So I never go on a big losing
streak and lose all my money. But I gotta make
sure I have enough money to cover because if I'm
you know, it's a ten dollar bet and I'm doubling
to twenty then forty, I'm just throwing these numbers out there.
Obviously this guy made lot more money. So it's like
a you know, I gotta have like ten thousand dollars
to be able to do this to make money. This

(15:08):
is what the XFL needs because they're going to lose money.
They're gonna lose it big. They're gonna lose it in
places that's not expected, just like the after just like
every spring league that's been able to start, Oh, we
can't make it more than five weeks because we can't
make payroll. As long as Vince McMahon has the money
that he's gonna be okay with losing for the first
year or two, then he's gonna see a springboard because

(15:31):
then the XFL will be an established thing. It will
be an established league and it's part of the sports
calendar and people will play. There will be a you know,
bigger contracts, more TV money, But you gotta have that
money to say I'm okay with Louke. I'm gonna keep
pouring money in the league because I wanted to succeed.
But you can't get nervous. And at the end of
the first year ago, man, I just lost a hundred
and seventy five million dollars. You know what, I'm pulling

(15:53):
the plug on it. No, you gotta be able to
say no, what I'm gonna keep you, I'm keeping if
you have the deep enough pockets to get to the
point after a couple of years when things are to turn,
you will be okay. But you've gotta be okay with
losing that money. Be sure to catch live editions of
The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten
pm Eastern seven pm Pacific. Jason locking four online with
us now taking time out from his book. He is

(16:15):
co writing The Buddy Beheim Story How I Raised Syracuse
with my Dad. Thanks so much, Jason for taking some
time out with us. Love. Let me tell you, hey,
so you know I keep going back. I was waiting
to talk to you all day today because obviously with
the news did the official news. Philip rivers parts from

(16:36):
the Chargers, the Patriots and Bob Crafts say they're gonna
allow they're okay with Tom Brady testing free agency. That's
very chivalrous and like they had a freaking you know,
hand the plane it one way or the other, but
like I had a choice. Yeah, it's very altruistic. Yeah,
I say, it's like when your girlfriend says, I want
to see other people. All Right, I'm gonna allow you
to do that. No, I'm gonna do it. No matter

(16:56):
what you've said from the beginning, everything you've talk to people,
you said, everything points to the charges to still do
that for Brady. If they if they look, if they
come correct, if they treat this like the monumental opportunity
it is on the field and off if I mean,
let's be real, like, if you're Tom Brady and this

(17:20):
is the first time that you know you're you're not
exclusively hitched to your partner, you're looking to be wined
and dined, and you're looking for people to knock your
socks off. Now, that's not an ownership group that's necessarily
known for knocking people's socks off. But if there's ever
a time to turn over a new leaf, this would
be it. He he wants to be wooed. He wants

(17:41):
to be courted and he is and I've been reporting
this since November. He is uniquely attracted to that spot
for a multitude of reason, some football and a lot
you know, not as well, will the Spano's family step up?
And and you know, kind know I just got the

(18:01):
watching The Bachelor with my daughter, you know what I mean? Well,
they handled this like a road ceremony, you know what
I mean? Like or will they you know, or or
will they kind of cut a corner here and cut
a corner there and and and not send the signal
that hey, we're going to do this big and which
you know, you've got two more years to play, and
we're gonna try to win and we're gonna try to
dominate this Los Angeles market. Um, I can tell you

(18:25):
Tom's committed to developing a quarterback. He wants to be
a mentor. He wants to have part of his lineage
and his um legacy being that wherever he goes New
England or wherever that he leaves it in good hands.
And at some of these TB twelve principles he's been
living with, you know, the way he works out the
avocado ice cream all that stuff. He thinks it could

(18:46):
work for other guys too, and he wants to be
a willing mentor wherever he goes. I mean, if I'm
the Chargers, I'm getting Tom Brady and I'm draft and
I'll draft Herbert too. I mean, like, you know, there's
nothing that says you can't do both. Yeah, I will
say this, I'm really surprised that the networking option of
having a Bachelor like program for these free agent decisions

(19:09):
hasn't been broached. Uh, and that with cours and sentence,
we're there, you think it would have immense crossover appeal.
I think it really could work. I mean, you know, hey,
here he is talking with Spanos, and then the dude
on The Bachelor right now is not as dreamy as
Tom Brady. There's no question about it. I mean, the
only guy that might trump him right now is Jimmy
Garoppolo even and now as sad Jimmy Garoppolo licking his

(19:30):
wounds after a Super Bowl loss. No, I think you
guys are missing the point. This is how Tom Brady
picks his new team. We have representatives on and they
woo him like in the Bachelor, and he keeps them
with Roses all the way un till the end. That's
what That's what we just said. How great would that be?
We just we're advocating, would you accepting Spanos Rose and
the Roses are look like thirty five billion dollars Robert

(19:54):
Bouquet and now we have the talent competition who And
we got the word at least nine times, I like
in the last three minutes. All right, so af of
the Tom Brady discussion, Philip Rivers, I mean they're officially done,
they break up. Where's he going? I really think it's
Tampa or Indianapolis. Um. I don't see there being a

(20:16):
you know, deep and bountiful market at this stage of
his career. But Frank Reich knows him really well from
their time together in San Diego, and they clearly aren't
all in on Jacoby Brissette by any stress of the imagination.
And if the Tampa Bay Bucks don't put a tag
of some sort franchise or transition on Jamis Winston, then

(20:38):
I absolutely expect them to make a run at Philip Rivers. Um.
I know Bruce arians has been talking to his buddy
Ken wasn't hunt about Rivers and what he thinks he's
got left in the tank. Wasn't. Hunt's a big proponent
of Phillips. They obviously worked together and San Diego and
l A. I believe, so, um, you know, outside of that,
I don't know. You know, if Tannehill, if the Tannehill

(20:59):
thing didn't happen in Tennessee, I think Nashville would have
absolutely been Phillips kind of town. But I'm just tagging Tannehill.
I mean, that's a no brainer at this point. Um,
So yeah, I mean, outside of that, could somebody emerge,
I guess, but I just I just don't really see it. Now.
What about Drew Brees. We've had these some crazy stories

(21:20):
and look as great as the Brady thing is, we
have reports that you know, NFL Network saying, hey, Breeze
could retire. He said, I don't know what's gonna happen.
Taysom Hill wants to be a franchise quarterback somewhere at
the age of thirty after thirteen passes in the NFL,
what's gonna eventually happen here in New Orleans. Well, they
don't know. I mean, this is and Drew Brees is
talking about retirement in a way he never has before.

(21:41):
He's um forgot like him to say, I need to
take a month to think about this. If I'm the Saints,
I'm I'm taking that to mean he's probably not coming back. Um,
you know, you have to really plan for that in
a way you haven't before. They're incredibly intrigued by Taysom Hill.
I know Sean Payton's been telling for quite some time
that he thinks he can win games now, albeit maybe

(22:04):
not what the offense they ran with breasing his prime,
but there are ways to win games with Taysom Hill. Um.
I don't know that they're gonna necessarily be able to
keep Bridgewater and Hill because I think Teddy Bridgewater is
gonna make some real money this time around. There's no
more you know, prove it deals or one year pillow contracts.
I mean, he's he can play now, and and he's

(22:24):
ready to be a starter, and he's going to make
some real money, so it'll be interesting. Umah. I just
Drew Brees was a guy who always was talking like
Tom Brady in the past about I think I can
play on forty five. My mind feels great, my body
feels great, my family supports me. That's that's not the
note he's been singing lately. He's Jason locking For a

(22:44):
CBS Sports NFL insider at Jason locking For on Twitter.
The Jason smit Show with Mike Arment continues here from
the Guico Studios. Jason uh keeping the quarterback field, the
Dak Prescott Stephen Jones, Hey, things are gonna accelerate and
heat up and fixing the heat up. It's like you've
had a year. What's the temperature really? I mean, if
if Dak Prescott, there's that, the Dobbins not even on,

(23:07):
I mean, what do you what do you mean? Do
you gotta ask Michael Arvin? He's getting trended to the Patriots.
Look what is his motivation right now? I mean, as
long as you'll get hit by a car here. I mean,
he's not He survived, he got through the season, he prospered,
He set himself up um to do exponentially well. And
now you've got my homes and Deshaun Watson who are

(23:30):
in the mix as well. I'm not doing anything. Tag
me and I'll sign you see what's put something on
the table July fourteenth, and I'll see if I want
to sign it or not. I mean if I'm Dak Prescott.
Depending on the timing of a new collective bargaining agreement,
I mean, at any point this spring, this summer, they
could do a new deal and the new CBA could say, Hey,
you're only allowed to be tagged once in your in
your life, you know, so if you just played four

(23:52):
years for five million bucks, go put the exclusive tag
on me. I'll take my thirty bucks for one year,
and I'll gamble on myself again. I don't I'm Dak Prescott.
What's the motivation to do anything now unless we're talking
thirty eight a year, Like, where do you want to
start it? Yeah, but it's not at thirty three anymore.
I just don't see it. I'm not showing up for camp.

(24:12):
I'm not doing anything. Put the tag on me. I'll
let it sit there and then we'll talk in late
July and you come make me. You know those one two,
third highest paid quarterback in the league. Whatever. Hey. Lastly,
Jay Myles Garrett's gonna meet with Commission Goodell about his
reinstatement following uh the controversy and and and hit Mason
Rudolph over the head with a helmet. Well, how do
you expect this to go as far as his application

(24:34):
for reinstatement. The way I reported it as a time,
and everything I've been told is it's it's essentially a
formality that they just wanted to have the dialogue open,
the lines of communication open. They didn't expect Miles Garrett
to do anything while he was suspended that would, you know,
cause them to to look askew at him again. But
they did want to have a provision in there where

(24:55):
he at least sat down with Troy Vincent and Roger
Goodell to talk some things out. Um. But but they
expect it to be more or less a rubber stamp
obviously though he knows now that um, as much as
he came into the league without a reputation for any
of his stuff, um, anything along these lines with the
personal fouls, and certainly something is egregious to swing his

(25:16):
helmet at another guy's head. Um, you know you you
the bar now has been raised. I mean, anything like
that happens again, you're talking about even more significant discipline.
And I have a feeling that's the last we've seen
of that. But this is really a formality. You can
follow on Twitter at Jason lock and for that's at
Jason Locke Forward, CBS Sports, NFL Insider. Look for the

(25:39):
upcoming book Me and Buddy Are Years at Syracuse Breath.
