(00:24):
to Fox Sports Radio. Greetings, Welcome in, Happy Friday to
you made it. Uh, they're back on the road, so
people are going back to work, or they're at least
coming from somewhere as we travel the highways and by
ways of southern California. I raised my large cup of
coffee to you this evening. Jason Smith is off on
(00:46):
Mike Carmen. Uh. Joining me tonight my buddy Dan Buyer.
We'll hear from Dan in a moment. As we know
a lot of moving parts in our sporting universe as
we roll forward in all the debates of can we
get to bubble safely? What are schedules gonna look like?
I mean, that's one of the big celebratory moments tonight.
(01:07):
I mean, you had another prime time special of Here's
what it looks like inside the bubble. And we got
our our schedule of all the eight games that each
team is gonna play as a tune up and start
rolling towards well what they hope will be title runs.
And a lot of details still to come out. They
had a hundred page report, and I'll be honest with you,
(01:28):
I have not read the hundred pages why because well,
really I'm while I'm curious about it, the bottom line
is the guys that are going into the bubble, they're
the ones that have to digest it right, and they're
the ones that have to abide by the rules and
be professionals right, and be professionals in this whole thing.
And we've debated it all all across the dials, sports radio,
(01:51):
sports television, in line, at the grocery store, wherever you've been.
Everybody's got an opinion on it as to how it
it's gonna go up, or just cheering actively in some
cases for it not to saying there's no way the
logistics can't work. Bottom line is, once you're in the bubble,
and said it before, I'll say it again on you're
(02:13):
in the bubble, you've committed to your team to the
hundreds of millions of dollars now and you're informing the
next c b A, the next round of what the
cap is going to look like, etcetera. There's a lot
writing on it, and that you're not going into that lightly.
You're not treading in lightly. So I think once you
(02:35):
get there and activities will be provided, right, They're gonna
have performers, you'll have all the foods you want, video
game systems everywhere. You can't play doubles ping pong, But
beyond that, I think I think you'll have some fun
along the way. And let's remember this, a lot of
these guys are gonna be there for a long period
of time. The laugh you heard my guy Dan Buyer
(02:56):
at Dan Buyer on Fox where you find them. Dan,
it's been a minute, I a bit money, I am
doing well. My kid is great to be with you,
and it is it's great to have a schedule out
to There's a lot that we're still waiting on Major
League Baseball to have theirs, and and who knows what's
going to happen with the NHL. They had a draft
lottery and we still don't know it's gonna have the
number one overall pick, but at least the NBA gave
us games. And I think it was big today to
(03:19):
to hear the message that Adam Silver said of basically,
we know that there is a risk, and there is
no scenario where there is there is no risk. So
unfortunately that is the case. That is the situation that
the NBA is in. They're gonna try their darndest to
get this thing over with. I don't know if it's
(03:39):
like a d I Y project that you've just been
unable to finish, you know, like, all right, we just
need to wrap this thing up. But that's where I
kind of think the point of of Adam Silver is.
And I haven't been a huge fan on where the
NBA has been through all of this, because it was
first of all, Mike championing the championing that we wanted
to be the first league back. And then it was
kind of, well, we got figure out to do it
(04:00):
the right way, and how are we going to do this?
And now you are in Orlando and there's the state
of Florida is is having some issues. The point being
is this is they've got their situation sorted out and
they're gonna go forward with it. And honestly, Mike, I
think it's let's just get this thing done and move on.
And that's that's that's where with all of their protocols
(04:22):
and what they're trying to do, I don't know how
much guys are going to be breaking it. Um we've
seen the number of positive tests. But to me, this
just basically seems like Adam Silver and the Players Association
are like, all right, we're gonna do it and hopefully
just close their eyes and get this thing over by October.
Well it's there, take your medicine and at the end,
(04:42):
there's a piece of candy in the other hand. Right,
those old tricks that you had when you go to
the doctor of all, right, now you get a sticker
and something from the treasure chest because you were good
and you had your cavity filled or you took the
shot or whatever it needed to be. With Adam Silver,
what he says, he sounds like a nice rash Oh man,
Why because he's that going what I've been saying all along, Dan,
(05:03):
if you've gone out of your house, that is the
only zero risk proposition. Nobody coming in, nobody coming out
the safer room. Right, you bought nine nine months worth
of grain and dry food products and whatever else you needed.
You you hoarded your toilet toilet paper, and then you
locked the door and you didn't leave because if you
went anywhere, you assumed some level of risk. Right, we
(05:25):
can agree to that. If you went to the grocery store,
you went to the pharmacy, you went down the street
just filling your gas tank. Right, there's some percentage of
risk associated they're in. So as Silver puts it, like
nothing's perfect, like we know that, like the it's all
fraught with peril, and there's gotta be a trust in
that partnership, particularly in the NBA that they've they've preached
(05:49):
for the last several years, between the players and the
governors and Silver himself of all right, we're all in
this together, and now you've got to trust that everybody is.
You know. I think that I I and I'm just
guessing here, but I think that if Adam Silver really
had his druthers, that they would go back and change
(06:11):
the format of of what is going on here, because Mike,
there's no reason to have twenty two teams. There's absolutely
there's no there's there's no reason to I mean, like
really and and when we hear the comments that Adam
Silver was kind of, um, you know, resigned to the
fact that they're gonna have to play games. And while
(06:31):
the situation isn't the greatest, that they feel confident at
least in the Orlando plan. But but realistically, Mike, the
whole issue of just balancing a competitive final or finale
to the season and health seemed to be what the
NBA was juggling. And now we've gotten to this point
(06:52):
where here we are on June. We don't know, if
you know, we think that things are better, but maybe
they're taking a little bit of a turn. The point
being is now we're at this point, Mike, and I
think that Adam Silver is just would rather be like,
all right, how do we just get through this and
not have any Okay, how can we make sure that
we settle a champion for real? I mean, there's no
(07:13):
reason to have a plan for the eighth seed, like that,
really is it? You gotta have you gotta have the
sixteen teams in the playoffs. And and and I know
that there were TV contracts involved in and that's the thing, right,
once you start talking about those hundreds of millions of
dollars uh into the fray. I I think that's money
always speaks very loudly, no matter how much we're talking
(07:34):
about health and the considerations of how you pull this
off and when and where, Man it conveniently goes to
where you've got your league partner the wide world of sports,
and I don't know if you've ever been down that way, Dan,
I mean, it's an impressive facility. So I mean they
they'll certainly have everything they need and then some uh
I know friends that have gone out there for gymnastics
(07:56):
or Davis competition. Not I've not been out there, unfortunately,
but I assume that everything. I mean, if it's if
the NBA is, you know, moving two thirds of their
league there, I would hope that it's awesome. Yeah, no,
it's but I mean it it can house thousands of
players basically, and obviously circumstances are different, and there's a
level of trust and the whole one eight eight raped
(08:17):
me out phone number that they put out is certainly there,
uh in place as well. Hopefully they don't have to
use it. But again, I think everybody keeps going, or
at least I don't want to say everybody, but a
lot of the rhetoric you hear is I they're gonna
be gone for four months, Like no, only a couple
of teams are. Most of the other guys are there
(08:39):
for their three weeks and they get their hardy handshake,
uh paras souvenir ears with their name on the back,
and they're gone. And I know that we're not sitting
here because this is the discussion that you know, should
have happened a month or two ago, of of changing
the format of of how this was going to move on.
(09:00):
And I'm now looking and I'm just gonna take the
Bucks for an example for their schedule. I know you've
been you've been working this out in your head, and
so now that it came out, I'm sure you you've
you've got to do. The Bucks are six and a
half games up on the Raptors for the best record
in the Eastern Conference. Basically, the Bucks have eight games
(09:22):
the seeding games that we're calling them, and one of
those games is Toronto and that's Monday, August ten. Effectively,
if the Bucks win that game, that they've locked up
the number one seed. So my whole point, Mike is,
if this is how the schedule is gonna you know,
fall out. And now we see the opponents, and I
know that the NBA tried to match up opponents with
(09:43):
who was still left on the regular season schedule, But
there's no reason for Milwaukee to be there, you know,
when you know, you talk about teams leaving, like, yeah,
we're gonna get rid of six teams right away after
two weeks. Realistically we probably don't even need. The Lakers
are bucking fishing games. And so now when you see
like these and and and even looking at like some
of the other you know, the the the Washington Wizards,
(10:05):
who are the only team in the Eastern Conference, you know,
just to try to figure out their schedule. That's the
most intriguing thing to me about today is all right,
how does Washington win enough games to try to stay
within four games of that that eight spot to end
up getting in the playoff because they're not gonna overtake
you know, the eight spot in the Eastern Conference. That's
not going to happen, but they're just that Those are
(10:26):
the things to me and seeing the schedule, that just
kind of point out, all right, maybe we didn't need
to go to this extent. Maybe we you know that
of all these games, and yeah, it's gonna be great
for the NBA, but we thought maybe things were gonna
be different a month ago when we were sitting here
discussing it. Now we're at this point and I just
now that the schedule is out and saying, you know,
the Bucks are gonna play what maybe one game that
(10:47):
that can really matter Lakers and Clippers will start it off.
But if the Lakers win that game, they pretty much
got the Western Conference top seed wrapped up. So yeah,
I just I think that the NBA could have done
a better job and if if they were really, really
truly now concerned about you know, safety, you know that
there are risks that are going on, they didn't need
to put these, you know, all of these teams here
at that point. Yeah. I think part of it goes
(11:08):
back to how the long lead right of when this
was initially announced, thinking that you still had two months
for things to calm, settle, whatever term you want to use, uh,
and you push forward and then you know, as as
you mentioned, you just have a couple of teams where
other than maybe the let's get our cardio or rotations reset,
(11:32):
particularly the Lakers with no Avery Bradley right, Uh, twenty
five minutes a night that you have to shuffle up
and deal. But you've got personnel on your roster. And
if it gives us j R. Smith inside the bubble,
then we're all winners here. But it's it's just the
the idea that you went to twenty two and it's
so clearly about the cash there's no there's no other
(11:55):
way to cut it up. And folks will dismiss the
Zion factor no chance. And how many articles about the
face of the league. I know Colin was talking about
it on the network the other day, Bang the druma
in months ago after he made his first appearance. Yeah,
and I also think Mike that and a lot of
us no matter where you are on on where you
(12:16):
are and wearing a mask or not wearing a mask,
or how you know, you think we got hot takes
on that too, where you think the pandemic is going.
The truth of the matter is, I think a lot
of people were optimistic around Memorial Day weekend, hoping that okay, well,
if these things do turn around, maybe it won't be
as you know, much of a big deal. Now, whether
you think it's a big deal or not, now is
(12:36):
not this the story. The story is is it hasn't
gone away. Like I think some of us were hoping that,
all right, if we get back to normal, then you know,
life will get back to normal, and now we find
out that that's not the case. And I think that's
where the NBA probably is looking at all of this,
and why Adam Silver is taking the tone that he's taking,
is just that, all right, maybe it just didn't turn
(12:56):
out as we would have hoped a month ago. And
I think everybody is actually in that boat, whether you
were wearing a mask or not wearing a mask, or
however you feel about it. Everybody wants it to get better,
you know, at least I hope so. And I don't
think that a month a month ago that our optimists,
you know, our optimism was fulfilled to where we are now. Yeah,
I think a lot of it comes down. I mean, look,
it's been a very crazy month right since that. I mean,
(13:18):
you've had a lot of a lot of civil action
across this nation, which we're talking tens of thousands of
people together, right, So that's part of part of the
equation that I don't think anybody would have accounted for
two months ago. Right. So you add that in, not
to mention the the battle lines being drawn of where
(13:39):
it don't wear it and people getting back to their lives.
You know, some of these variables. Like I said, you know,
you go to the grocery store and you you pick
up that that can of beans. Five guys might have
touched that and decided they didn't want beans, right, you don't,
You don't know. I mean not to be glib about it,
but the reality is, I mean there's just those percentages
of risks and you multiple lie it all out and
(14:00):
probability uh and statistics all comes into play. Uh. And
some are more careless than others. And the reality is,
you know, from an economic standpoint, up for mental health,
people were ready to get back to different pieces of
their lives, right. Uh. And from an economic standpoint that's
(14:22):
a whole other part of the argument from the societal part.
But certainly we're well well aware of what the NBA
was looking to lose and what they've already lost going
back to the preseason uh and Daryl Morey's comments and
the China exchange and everything that went down there. So
you know, they were already chasing money, so they were
(14:42):
certainly gonna try to make it work. But I think
part of it is also you've got until you go
into the bubble. Right. The we we talked about it
a little bit last night, Jason and I. The idea
with football players always those last three weeks before they
hit training camp, right, don't do anything stupid, just get
to training camp and then I got you. Uh, same
(15:03):
thing here. It's like, if you haven't contracted it, you
haven't tested, right, they tested three people sixteen positives. Right,
If you haven't gotten it, then then maybe once we
get you here, if we're all smart about it, it
doesn't enter this place and we can all push forward, right,
because you think you can control it, but again you
need everybody else to do their part. The league trying
(15:25):
to at least bang the drum saying well, we got
you as far as we can take it. Do you
think I would just quickly? You know, Kevin Durant ruptures
is achilles and returning last year in the NBA Finals,
Clay Thompson blows out his A C L in Game
six and to the Warriors, do you think we're gonna
have the Obviously those were longer term injuries, but if
you know, a star player is out for ten days
(15:47):
to two weeks in the Eastern Conference Finals or NBA Finals.
You know, like you think about do you think it's
comparable to what to what you have of of of
maybe what we saw last year. Do you think that
there's any like, are we gonna look at it and say, man,
if only the you know, the Bucks had Janice at
that point, or were gonna be like, man, that was
really stupid, you know, like why in the world would
(16:09):
they even playing games, you know, the Bucks to even
have their best player. Just use that as an example,
because that's where I think we're going to be. I
don't think we're going to look at it as like, oh,
it was just it was, you know, like unfortunately that
Kevin Durant you know, ruptured as achilles and that you know,
Clay got hurt late in that game and then was
lost for the entire season. I don't think that we're
going to compare it there. I don't think that they're comparable,
(16:30):
And I think that's something that the NBA, um, you know,
it's probably just gonna have to deal with. Yeah, in
the end, I mean everything is gonna have the extra
Wikipedia chapters with attached to it, right, because nothing's been normal.
I mean, look, the murder hornet showed up for a
week and then they disappeared. Now we got walking fish
and all these other things popping up all over the world.
(16:52):
So uh, this would just be another part of the plagues. Uh.
If one of those big stars was was to be
fell by this, it would be unfortunate. But like an injury,
like any other unforeseen circumstance, the show must go on
and we will too. Dan at Dan Bar on Fox

I just laugh, remembering old football practices. High It's Mike
Armen alongside Dan Buyer. Jason Smith is off tonight the
Jason Smith Show with Mike Rmen here on Fox Sports Radio.
And some of the data coming out in different points
that we have for our sporting events is that, well,
we're trying to get people into stadiums, right, We've heard
(18:39):
the talk in Chicago. They're moving into the next phase,
even though we've watched Texas and Florida retreat just a
little bit, and then we we pushed forward. And now
it's the question, well, if it opened in the in
the five hundreds, say they want to be at come
mid August, would you go. If they open those doors
(19:02):
and invited you back in, why don't we talk about
that with our guests now on the hotline. All our

sixty two on Twitter, and right now he represents Florida. Man, Hi, Buddy,
I am Florida. Man. It's it's gone into the streets now. Man.
(19:49):
They can't hide those numbers. Uh nine thousand yesterday. Baby.
We're pushing, We're pushing to get the five figures, five
figures on cases. That's what I'm them for now. If
they open the doors to uh, you know, a sporting
event near you, how eager are you to go through
the doors? How fast can I drive to Georgia? Like
(20:09):
I can I leave the state and get us far
away from this maybe, but it might you know, like
trying to stop you at the cord. Though I wouldn't
feel safe like surrounded by a band of cats right
now in Florida the way I thinks you're going like,
I'd feel safer with the cash. There would be like
(20:34):
a pack of dogs like on a not in this state.
That's a current, that's a social distancing issue right now,
they're falling like flies in this place. I gotta tell
you that what took so long with the cancelation of
the uh the Hall of Fame ceremonies, was it just logistics?
Because I don't think anybody thought it would be a
great idea to get a bunch of seven year old guys,
(20:55):
you know, put them together. You don't think that. You
don't think of bringing in the highest risk group. And
that's it was so amazing a month ago of like people,
that's what was so amazing. We're still planning for like
what what wait a second, what are we doing year?
Let you know, let took him so long? I think
(21:17):
that they like you just go through the motions and
you look, you don't cancel things until you have to
cancel them. Until it's you know, sort of finally said
that this is what's what? And I understand that, like
there's no real there was no rush to cancel it
right now? Did everybody know what that saying happening? Okay?
And we sort of know that it's gonna be They're
(21:39):
gonna be lucky if each team gets two games and
and pre in the preseason, right, that's gonna be really fortunate.
We all know it already. But is there a reason
to really have to announce today that you're canceling it? There?
You know, there are other things in the agenda, and
most people know. It's like me, if you invade me
to a game right now, like want to go, I
(22:00):
want to see a game, but I'll watch it on
TV for right now, Like I'm okay with that. I
can I can live with that for another couple of
weeks where we'll be fine here and let's let me
see how this thing plays out. And you know what
the risks are. We can do that for a while.
So from a straight hey, we we warn you about
(22:24):
getting together in groups. How much does the league and
the players Association? Hey, Tom Brady right now, Uh, not
the most popular thing in the world. But you know,
I get what time where Tom's coming from, which tells
me if I'm all the people who are betting on
how's he going to be this year, well you better
bet a lot because he's driven. He didn't care, He's
(22:47):
done everybody. I'm I don't care. I'm here to win.
I'm here to prove to everybody that I can do
this on my own. I'm gonna have fun. I'm gonna
play it my way, and you all pend you know risk,
be damned, I'm going for it. And I don't necessarily
blame him. It's his risk to take as long as
(23:09):
everybody else's will to take the same risk. Um, I
get it. And he's going against the advice of the
Players Association. Um if I was him, I would probably
do the same thing. So I totally get it. And
that's what makes part of what makes him great. Yeah. Look,
(23:30):
he shows up more for work than Jason Smith does. Oh,
there's no question about it. It's not afraid like like,
does you think he's going to get Like? You guys
aren't even a studio doing this, are you. I'm in
the studio tonight, so I can chutut in the auxiliary.
(23:51):
You think that that that you guys are gonna get
coronavirus in the studio and in in Sherman Oaks. Is
that's what he thinks is going to happen? Like why
why does he all of a sudden become such a chicken? Like?
What's going on? You're just now asking this question? I
mean when did you like when did he become he
(24:12):
become Mr Loopner and have no spine? Wow? Yeah, he
cut that off tight shirt. We'll have to bring that
one back when Smith's back in the chair. List the
Jets questions because he wasn't gonna be the whole Jamal
Adams thaying like, is he really afraid that? Adam Gates
is going to continue to say yeah, we really want
Jamal as because that when he knows that that means
(24:32):
we're trading him in a week as soon as we
can get a third rounder for him. Does that that
is that what he fears in this whole thing? See,
I was taking a little deeper as to uh, what
week is Greg Williams name the head coach this year?
Greg Williams. Great Greg Williams being a head coach again?
Why it is Captain Bligh all over again? Man he
(24:52):
just yeah, just like mute me on the Bounty. He's
just would be fantastic with Greg Williams taking over. By
the way, I told Frostburg that if he misses the
third show in a row, I'm taking over as a host,
and um My, my opening line of the Jason Coles
Show with my with Michael Harmon is going to be, um,
(25:14):
welcome to a better Jason capacity. Crowd on their feet.
Uh warning, like the Culta rallies, there we go, we
amping up a little bit. There you go to eleven.
Uh So, realistically, a third round pick would be all
(25:40):
it would take to get him away from the Jettes.
So I didn't say that. I look, there are people
who are in charge. I'm saying that Adam Gates has
probably looking give me a third round pick desperately. That's
all I want. Just get rid of him, get him
off my team. I can't stand him anymore. Like that's
what That's where gaze is at. But now I think
they're there are probably cooler heads that were prevailed, you know,
(26:02):
including the owner who would probably sit there and go.
I think he's worth more than that, I really do.
Just something tells me he's worth more than that. Just
just a good feeling, you know. By the way he
speaking of Jamal Adams. I know it's a week old,
but his list of teams was like my Christmas list.
He's got nothing on it, like you know, like yeah,
like like this said like that and like that, and
(26:23):
you're like socks, you know, like how did I get?
Why not? Like if you're go for it, like why
not go the whole bustince Like, I'm surprised the Lakers
were on that list. With a hundred and fifty million
dollars fully guaranteed, I'm gonna be the highest paid player
regardless of position in the entire league, you might as
(26:44):
well go for it, like you're not going to have
many opportunities like this, so's just yeah, let it ride.
You know. It's like it's like Richard drive us at
the track, like not now that was That's really definitely
done right there. That's one of Richard drives sort of
sports gambling movies and having that kind of nonsense stuck
in your head for it has been thirty five years
(27:06):
or something like that. That's all right. There's probably a
blogger two and then you can claim you saw it
in the theater and right off twelve bucks or something
like that. Well, I did see it. I did see
it in the theater. Not recently, but I did see Yeah,
I did as a kid show shows you what kind
of films I would off. Now thirty five years later,
it's still in my brain. I'm taking the credit. Now,
when's the next time you go into a theater? That's
(27:27):
that would be the second part of the question that serious.
There comes bire theater inquiring how the world is that serious?
How the world is that serious? Let's check the efficacy
of what he said. He said he would drive to Georgia. Okay,
(27:47):
I like testing that theory because I know that he
will drive for that large drum popcorn, because we know
Cole he likes his starches. Listen, listen. If you're driving
the Georgia to get away from Florida, a movie theater
is ten times worse. You got it is when you're
when you want to drive to Georgia to get away
from anything, like do you really and like the closest
(28:11):
city that we're really I'm really near is like Zaltasta,
like or you know, like all they do is like
have onions there. That's it. The Dally onions. That's all
you get there, Jason Cole giving you the opinions of
Georgia and Florida, where he resides. Oh god, this is hell.
It's absolutely hell. I mean yeah, that's the best summer
(28:35):
statement I've heard. Yeah. Well, I mean, look, I am Florida, man,
I know of what I speak. I feel like we
should have a whole merchandise line. Dan. I just think
a movie theater is a hundred times worse than a
stadium or an arena. Yeah, absolutely, yeah. I mean it
(28:56):
already had its demons and any issues long ago. I
mean there's no I mean, like COVID is like the
least dangerous thing you get in a movie theater right now, Okay,
we're gonna rank those to Hey no, alright, kids, Uh,
you can google that on your own time as kids
(29:18):
don't Kids don't know, Please don't look. I'm I'm in
the middle of my forties. Man. A kid is a
thirty five year old man. At this point, it really
just went off the rails. Uh, it's a fair point,
Jay school. Uh. One more football related note, with all
(29:40):
of the pushes and everybody's saying the right things about
Colin Kaepernick. Uh, any movement at all with all the
quote interested teams thought, is that just the headline we're
gonna see every week just because people like to write
the headline every week? Oh? Absolutely, It's gonna be another
one of as lawyers like, oh, we've heard that two
(30:01):
teams are after him, now they're not. No, that's not true.
That's not true at all. Like it never happened, you know,
Garett Goes just shut up, like stop it, you know.
And Okay, Anthony Lynn, you put in a nice word form.
That's great. Yeah, Pete Carroll, you we should have signed him.
Why don't you do it now? Right? The Rams? Look
(30:22):
at the RAMS roster. The three backup guys on the
RAMS roster have thrown a combined total of how many
NFL passes? Uh? Is it like eight or something like that?
How about zero? I didn't know if they had a
journey in there. I haven't done my my deep dive
(30:43):
on the RAMS backup quarterbacks, and fantasy required that much
of a deep dive. Like two of them are rookies
and one guy was on the team last year. I
don't think he got off the practice squad. So those
are the three guys. There's not a single NFL thrown
pass thrown by any of those three, and you're telling
me that it those guys are better than Colin Kaepernick.
(31:03):
Matt shop is still playing. Matt Shob is seventy eight
years old, Okay, and he is the backup in Atlanta.
He's had a hell up run. Yeah right, I men
think about that, because I mean he was back in
what he was, that's where he started, he backed upon
to start his career. Yes, and he's he's returned there,
(31:25):
and it's you know, he was on the original Falcon
steam all those years ago. He backed up Barkowski for
a while. I think Al's fine. Peach Tree, Peach Tree part.
I got people ask by the way, by the way
just to Cal sucks. I hate Cal. I think that's
(31:45):
probably the best place to to leave this off. And
I've got folks now in a letter writing campaign to
try to get your own show. Jason Cole, I've been
I've been carrying you guys for how many years now?
There's no question about it. We'll do it again next week. Right.
He's Jason Cole. He is a Hall of Fame voter. Uh,
(32:07):
somehow that honor still stays with him. Joins us each
and every week at Jason Cole sixty two See You
Buddy's Just Insanity. Be sure to catch live editions of
The Jason Smith Show with Mike harmon weekdays at ten
pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific. Dan's party continues here at
Fox Sports Radio, The Jason Smith Show with Mike Carmen.
(32:30):
Jason Smith off tonight called out by Jason Cole. Uh At,
how about a freski if you want to let Jason
know what Cole thinks of him. Uh Dan buyers in
for Smith tonight. We're having some fun with you. Thanks
for being part of our extended family. We do appreciate
you every minute that you give us. We got bo
and of course the big a spin in the tunes
(32:52):
as always, so we keep things rolling here. And it's
almost fantasy football season. I'm starting to get my notes
for the leagues that I'm in, the quote unquote experts league.
In other words, uh, let's do a draft, Let's do
the analysis and watch everything burn because anybody you touch
in those generally you're trying to outthink the room, which
(33:13):
means you don't draft according to any particular boarder, at
least I don't you start doing theory testing and you
get a little bit cute hoping that one of those sleepers,
one of those ninjas that you've picked up, becomes the
big breakout star of the year, and then well you
get yourself a nice hearty Laurel crown along the way.
So we thought we'd go through a mock first round tonight,
(33:37):
uh and get it started through a very scientific way
of doing things. Dan Buyer ended up with the first pig. Boo,
go second, I'll I'll come in the third slot. So
Dan Buyer, the honor is yours. You are on the clock.
Some people may think that this is a very very
easy selection to go number one, and it was. It
was easy for me. It was easy for me to
(33:57):
bypass Christian McCaffrey and takes say Kwan Barkley. Look at
number one overall. I think that if if I was
starting a draft and at the first overall pick, I
would be all in on se Kwon Barkley. I still
think that there's a bit of a change over in Carolina.
We don't necessarily know our things are gonna go. We
do know how things are gonna go with the Giants,
I believe, and that's on the shoulders of se Kwon Barkley.
(34:20):
So I'm taking Barkley number one. Barkley goes off the board,
bow Benson on the board at number two. I'm gonna
surprise you guys here. I'm gonna take DeAndre Hopkins. WHOA yeah,
I think I think Arizona is a good place for him.
And you know, I'm very biased towards former Sooners. So
Kyler Murray's gonna throw like five thousand yards here in
ceedee lamb. Then uh, he'll come back for him in
(34:42):
the third round. He's a cowboy, now, thank you? Oh wow?
See that. I mean, that's the philosophical thing. We have
to get one of the six teams bo doesn't like
in the NFL. We well, we will do that as
a therapy podcast series. Dan, you and I doing a
fantasy football couch with bo oh and well some of
the other guys. I mean, you know the crew we've
(35:02):
got here at Fox Sports Tribute. I mean, then we
could have hour long sessions with a lot of them
with their aversions two different teams, or when you say
who hurt you and they can name that guy they
drafted in the first round three years ago, and and
the tears start to well up because they've been mocked
around these hallways ever since. We know that. I've seen
the emails. It's not a pretty thing. All right, you
(35:25):
guys left him. I'll take McCaffrey. I am fearful of
the workload coming back to bite him. Some uncertainty as
to where we go in the post cam Newton era
as to how things start to flow, because I can't
even rely on Kyle Allen there, man. So it's it's
a new world order. Uh. But we know that workloads,
(35:47):
so long as he's healthy, is approaching plus touches again,
So give me opportunity. And since we'll assume some level
of participation out of the passing game, whether we didn't
specify P p R or not. But for the sake
of argument, we'll go half point. I'll take McCaffrey, alright.
So then back around to me, we're gonna keep ooard,
(36:08):
not gonna snake it, alright. I'll take number four on
this list. For as much as I I you know,
remember Derrick Henry running over the Ravens and the Patriots
and the a f C playoffs, And for as much
as I remember Dalvin Cook being as great as he
was when he was playing for the Vikings. I'm going
with Ezekiel Elliott. I just Cook's injury history. I don't
(36:32):
know if it was lightning in a bottle with the Titans,
but I do know Ezekiel Elliott will produce for the Cowboys.
So I'm taking Zeke at four. I would have to
assume that MC Mike McCarthy doesn't try to outthink the
room like his predecessor did. You paid Ezekiel Elliott to
run the football behind a good offensive line, Why is
he not touching it? Absolutely would be alright, Bo, we'll
(36:58):
pick overall. Well, since you guys of him to sit
in there and he's the best running back in football,
I go ahead and take Nick Chubb. Uh, you know
revamped Brown's offense, Baker is gonna touch the ball less.
I think Jeff is gonna have a really big year.
Another guy that could potentially get run into the ground. Uh,
we'll talk a little bit about Baker Mayfield. Uh. Some
headline reaching because that's the fun coming up in about
(37:18):
five minutes. What you get out of the headlines when
you watch your NFL. UH movers and shakers. Because we
referenced Brady before. I got a couple of headlines that
will make you scratch your head as to how his
workouts are being described. Uh, let me go back for
Michael Thomas. Anything in the radius. Uh, he's gonna catch
(37:38):
Drew Brees. I still have the trust factor. But you
know what, I don't need him to win me a
playoff game. What he's eight and eight in his career
in the playoffs. Slight dig there. Uh, nothing happened to
do with his off season. Uh step, but Michael Thomas
is going to continue to pile up targets. That much
we know, So give me the number one receiver. As
(38:00):
much as those are interesting, I think that the next
six are going to be so intriguing because of the
mix of running backs and tight ends and wide receivers.
Should be interesting. No, absolutely, Since we already went with
bow taking Nick Chubb where he did, he already jumped
well beyond the board in terms of the quote Fantasy
pros Uh consensus rankings to start twenty twenty. Good stuff, guys.
(38:24):
We'll do the back half coming up in two hours,
but more Tom Brady and Headline. Be sure to catch
live editions of The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon
weekdays at ten pm Eastern seven pm Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio Gratings hour two
of the program on a big Friday Night. Thanks for
hanging out with us, being part of our extended family
(38:46):
here at Fox Sports Radio. We know you have a
lot of choices in your entertainment and information uh side
of things, and well we're pleased and excited for every
minute that you give us, whether you're shaking your head
uh in agreement, nodding along, or you're vigorously shaking side
to side, work in the neck muscles because you disagree,
(39:06):
whatever it is. Uh. We we appreciate it and the
feedback certainly at Swollen Domes where you find me on Twitter.
Smith is off tonight, uh, gallivanting around. I think he
was in the middle of the now you see me
one and two. Uh. That's become the latest of obsession
that he brought up earlier in the week. So now
he's going through the whole Eisenberg catalog, maybe a little
(39:27):
more woody haralson. I don't know if his daughter is
ready for some of what would he has to offer
in his eclectic film career, but whatever the case, may
be Dan Buyer is with me here tonight on Fox
Sports Radio. Look at he had a lot of the
the data flowing through an information overload when it comes
to the nation at large, and certainly from a sporting perspective.
(39:50):
We were excited to see the schedule released for the
NBA and the restart at the end of July, that
first night of games Utah and the Clip Utah and
New Orleans, and then you've got the Clippers and Lakers,
right they get to face off on an opening night
for the second time in a season. So everybody's excited
(40:11):
their Dan. But hey, you know what, different times, different measures.
Uh you know, as I've said all along, and you know,
for those that listen regularly, a thank you, but be
you're gonna I'll say it again. It's like, look, it's
different times, and we're trying to come at these things
in every part of society, right, everybody's had to make
(40:33):
adjustments in their jobs. We certainly have here at Fox
Sports Radio in the way we're producing content and bringing information.
Uh technology, you know, whether you're using zoom or or
face time or whatever it is to try to do
meetings for your uh different jobs or or however, you're
spacing things if because look, from day one we were
(40:55):
still having people going to Walmart, Targets and grocery stores
Dan and those people all still had to go to
work declared essential, and we had the argument over what
the word essential really means in this society and to
whom uh. And that's something I'll let other people fight
about because to me, you know, it's everybody's essential and
and fills the purpose and why you can go into
(41:17):
one because they've got better lobbyists, uh than the mom
and pop down the block is problematic, but on the
whole it's everybody's trying to figure out how to make
their businesses run. And sports is no different, right, It's
just now we're talking about public knowledge of what everybody
makes and trying to extrapolate that and make it fit. Right.
(41:38):
We have the Malcolm Jenkins comments from earlier this week
of football is non essential, which to me raised an eyebrow. Obviously,
we have a lot of things going on in our society,
but you also think of the tens of million, hundreds
of millions of dollars of people that are involved and
(42:00):
whose livelihoods are at least in part pushed forward by
sports being played from those that work in the ballparks
UH and stadia across the country, to people in athletic
departments at colleges on down to the guy selling you
the next bottom line of bubble Heads with insert player here.
(42:20):
I know you've got thirty seven Jannice is and you're
working on your yelling collection. But but it's that kind
of thing as we go, DAN trying to find their
new way and and how to to make best best practices.
And tonight we at least took another step forward with
the NBA and the release of the schedule. And I
know you're marking it up already. Well I am, and
(42:44):
I'm not like I I look at the schedule and
I just the the seeding games. I understand why you
want to play them on the games, and I understand
that you want to play games before entering a playoff scenario.
I just don't know why you couldn't have done that
with the sixteen teams that are would have made the
playoffs if you just took the standings where they were
and started them. Sorry, like the Wizards shouldn't. And it's
(43:06):
not even a fairness thing, Mike, it's it's it's well,
it is a fairness thing, but it's also just the
fact of of safety with all of it. But what
I find interesting is is the schedule comes out tonight.
You mentioned the opening night games and the Pelicans and
Jazz and what was one of the storylines that we
thought of why the NBA had more than sixteen teams
Zi and you and Jason have talked about it on
(43:27):
the show. Other people have talked about it as well,
and and Brian Windows is the you know, one of
the first to bring it up as well. Of yeah,
that you know, the NBA would like to have Zion
play in those games marketed a little bit more. But
also you've got a scenario and what's going to be
the late game where the Clippers and Lakers play Mike,
And because the Lakers are up five and a half
games on the Clippers for the top spot in the
(43:49):
Western Conference. If the Lakers win that game, there are
other seven seeding games basically don't matter. I mean, they
would have to lose every single one, and the Clippers
would have to run the table in essence to make
any change at the top of it. So it's just
it's interesting to me to find the balance and and
we talked about it last time, and if people missed,
(44:10):
they can always check out the podcast. But it seems
like there was a big balance done with this matchup
because you didn't want Clippers Lakers to be the fifth
game on the Lakers schedule because the Lakers could have
had things wrapped up by then, right, you know, but
now you're because of the the amount of lead that
they have, you have to have it early, and now
you could have you could have the Western Conference top
(44:31):
seed basically be wrapped up on Night one of these
seeding games. So there's a lot of balancing, a lot
of juggling as teams are, you know, are trying to
figure it out. And maybe it is more about the
eighth seed than those teams trying to get in. But
I think when you're looking at the top seeds and
how they're going to navigate those months or weeks and months,
(44:51):
it could be in Orlando. I mean, the Lakers could
be there playing two weeks of meaningless games that they
win the first night, and I think that that's intriguing.
It's good, but it's in tregue well right, working themselves
back into shape, and and part of it as we
we've talked about a little bit, and to extrapolate here,
the the extra teams into the bubble. You know, the
(45:11):
more people that are there, the more support you need,
which is good economically, right, and have more people employed,
But the more people you're running more risks as they
go home to their families, because I don't, as far
as I'm aware, they don't have a dorm to themselves, right,
and they're still coming to work and then going home.
(45:32):
So it's all a larger partnership, not just between the
league and the players, but the folks working for Disney
and the hospitality folks that are entering and exiting the
premises to you know, just say, hey, we're gonna be
smart about this and have our best practices. And no,
that's a lot of trust. But I don't know what
you have otherwise, right, Otherwise are you supposed to just
(45:55):
say until we've got this figured out? Because I keep
hearing the the argue a mint of about vaccines, like, well,
vaccines aren't cures, right, I mean, obviously it's a step forward,
and you'd like for testing to be more reliable because
there's been questions of that. Right with the women's soccer
league trying to get restarted, and some questions of you know,
(46:18):
the veracity of some of the tests going on there.
But we can all agree going out to celebrate seeing
each other again to a bar is probably not a
best practice scenario, right right, So, but once you're in
the bubble in theory, you're only with people that have
been screened multiple times in said bubble. I have a
(46:41):
a golf trip, uh it not. I was going back
home and I was gonna play some golf. Put it
that way. I had a couple of nights stay at
of course this is gonna be set for August, and
in trying to set up the plans of just trying
to figure out the rooms just for from my two nights, Mike,
my two nights. I it's just curious about what the
(47:01):
situation was, and this is and and the the lodge
if you will at the place probably as a total
of sixteen rooms in the entire building. And you know,
it's brought up to the point of like you can
you can forego you know, main service if you would like,
if if that would make you feel more comfortable that
nobody enters your room. And I thought, okay, that's you know,
(47:23):
that's that's interesting, that's unique. And then to think of
all of the logistics than an NBA team of just
having the different people coming in and out, I mean
think about it as well of even of the people
who are entering that bubble to do their jobs, of
having to deal with other people who have entered those
hotel rooms. I mean you talk about you know, the
(47:44):
livelihood as well, but those people also them putting themselves
at risk, maybe not the other way around, the people
staying there like myself. So yeah, there's it's just it's
it's so much to handle. I've always felt this, and
and not to not to get on this soap box
or anything, but I think this is what the NBA wants.
The NBA wants their players to do their part, and
(48:05):
I think that's what has been so key and all
of this. Just do your part to try to you know,
eliminate it or to lessen it, to to maybe not
do some of the stuff that you're you know, used
to do. You have other things that you could do.
Just do your partner. I think that's what the NBA
wants their players to do. Well. As we've talked about,
you know, for forever, you and I when we were
(48:25):
doing the Sunday Show together, Dan, I mean, going back
to the ousting of Donald Sterling, there was a shift
between you know, players to owners, governors whatever term we're using,
uh and and Adam Silver of all right, there's a
partnership now that's established. You've you've gotten to you know,
push forward a little bit with some of your your
(48:45):
wants and and impressing on you know, how this league
needs to push forward and work. And obviously that's all
constantly evolving. But when it comes to this process, it's
all right, let's let's show you how much money is
really at stake here if we don't pull this off, right,
Because the estimate about China was what four million I
(49:06):
think it was five million dollars thereabouts that was lost
at the start of the season. So you sure can't
take another two billion dollar loss on the back end
without a substance in a substantive reduction in the salary cap,
which means if you're going into free agent your free
agent year, assaulty are you that this all went down?
(49:27):
All right? And and for the guys that were debating
whether they go into the bubble or not, it's like, well,
if I get hurt there, maybe I don't get to
cash in at all, and maybe I have to sign
a minimal one year deal and have to wait for
normalcy to return, right or in in the case of
Avery Bradley, you had questions of social justice on one side,
(49:50):
and then the immuno compromised oh young child. Right, So
you have two things at play there, and and that
still swirls in the background for a lot of the
players as well. But in the end, you can do
a lot more once you've gotten what is it or
whatever that percentages of basketball related income uh into their
(50:13):
pockets to to go back out and continue their work
in the community. And you're never gonna have a bigger
platform than how thirsty everybody is for sports right now,
right you want a curb outbreaks all these leagues coming back,
stagger him every hour of the day when DoD They's
tip off two am. You know, I know that there
(50:36):
is a great thirst and and we talked about it
in the hallways here at Fox Sports Radio. But there
is also the point too of what is really you know,
what is the ratings are going to go up? Well,
why do you have ratings? All the ratings are good?
Because you can sell advertising. If no one has money
to buy your advertising, than what good are the ratings
to do? You know when you talk about the extras
(50:56):
and stuff like that, of of you know, restaurants and
bars are on arenas. Although there's not gonna happen in Orlando,
it's gonna happen, but it's not happening in Milwaukee. It's
not happening at Staples Center. In Los Angeles, it's not
you know, happening you know, in downtown Houston, like you're
not you know, those places are are still gonna be
you know, having to uh to make up for this
(51:18):
in the in the lost income. So yeah, that's just
it's a lot, it's a lot, a lot of bigger
picture at stake, you know, as the NBA returns, the
schedule gives us something to talk about and look at.
But uh, yeah, I think there's there's more issues for
that link to deal you know, I have to deal
with in the future. Oh yeah, it's still a long road.
And like there's so many twists and turns to the
(51:38):
first half of which will end on Tuesday. Uh, finally
mercifully comes to it. It's actually my daughter's birthday. So
we'll we'll celebrate her birthday and what has been a
very long couple of months. Uh here in our world, right, Uh,
the time has passed quickly, but the individual days seem
to drag at times because you don't have that outlet
(52:01):
of all right, let's yell about, you know, an underperforming
coach or player or whatever else, Like the Jamal Adams
story is fun. And we'll get into Tom Brady here
in a couple of minutes. But just the the idea
of having some of that back, I think for an
emotional lift. And I got to imagine you just have
(52:22):
to get creative, right if you own anything near a facility,
and even the owners of the teams themselves, all right,
how do we get a giant screen up? And we
have a drive in service, right, a bunch of food trucks.
Here's the numbers, here's the website whatever. See now, I'm
merchandizing and and and trying to create business for people, Dan,
(52:43):
But but it's all about that communal experience that, however,
you can pull that off, even in a weirdly simulated circumstance.
Over the next month, we're gonna see everybody pull out
all the stops to try it. I'm still interested to
see then of the NFL in the end and uh
and the banners and and and everything that's gonna go
(53:05):
with it. Yeah, we're gonna be seeing new new level
in sports for sure. That may be like Jason Cole
and not and not end up going to any of
these games anyway. Well, I think, uh, as soon as
they're available, I'm in right Uh for me, I think
the most intriguing, at least short term. Think about, Uh,
Wrigley Field in Chicago, those apartment buildings across the street
(53:28):
where on the rooftops they've built the little stands. How
much can you charge per game right now for that?
What's the going rate? I gotta imagine it's a multiple
of what it used to be because you're gonna be
the only ones able to watch the game live and
in living color except on your television. Hey, you know,
I don't know what the gathering rule is in Illinois,
so that could be it could be an issue there
(53:49):
as well. Small gatherings. Yeah, you can get them up
on the rooftop, but that's not controlled by the Cubs,
so they can't try to skirt any city rules, is
the problem. Uh, And we know there's been a lot
of fights. If you ever want to a good laugh
on a weekend, Dan, just start looking up the lawsuits
that have been filed between the city and the owners
of those apartment buildings and the cubs. It's a it's
(54:11):
a it is a triple threat match if there ever
was in terms of legally. But look after the first
page you might be it might be sleep inducing. I'm
not gonna lie to you. I I love that stuff.
It's well, it's also my hometown. Uh. And the craziness
that ensues their in no question. Hey, coming up next,
(54:32):
we're gonna talk about a bunch of headlines surrounding the NFL. Uh.
And if you ever thought clickbait was was not a
real thing, well, uh, it's not thirst trapping, but it's clickbaiting.
We'll get into that next. He's Dan Buyer at Dan
Buyer on Fox. Find me over at Swollen Dome. We
are coming alive from the guy. Go Fox Sports Radio
Studios fifteen minutes. You can save you fift or more
(54:55):
on your car insurance to go to Geico dot com

could do that. Oh, and he is next Tom Brady's
never been hotter. Be sure to catch live editions of
The Jason Smith Show with Mike harmon weekdays at ten
pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific. So the back and forth
with Jason Cole continues now in the Twitter verse with
(55:15):
me at Jason Cole sixty two. You heard earlier staging
his coup and he replied with it'll be bloodless because
Smith's too big a coward to fight back. I I
fighting words, Dan Buyer. It's next level going on here
on a Friday night. I don't think Cole follows me,
so I don't think I can get Yeah, we'll have
(55:37):
to rem there's the record. It's all good, It's all good.
Hello Darkness. Let's see how that comes in. I don't
know the whole backstory of of why he gets take
on me, you know, from AH, but I can tell
you the Hunting High and Low album was one of
my favorite albums as a as a kid, and I
(55:58):
remember listening to that tape my Carmen all day long
on the Saturday of the Medford Open when I was
in fourth grade and brought home my first ever individual
wrestling championship at the Medford, Wisconsin Open. In fourth grade?
Did you retire that single it? Do you still have it? No?
(56:18):
But I can tell you this, there were so many
kids at the tournament that they ran out of medals,
so they had to give us high school medals. And
so I had this enormous like gold medal with this
M in the middle for Medford because they didn't have
any more medals to give out because there were too
many kids registering, so pinned somebody else for their man.
(56:39):
Hunting High and Low is a good song. You know,
the sun always shines on TV. Great aha songs nicely
forget the Genesis, but we had that or the SKA version, Uh,
what is it? Real big Fish with their version that's
so popular earlier in the week with commemorating what would
have been the day of George Michael, so we had
(57:02):
we had to get a couple of those in over
the course, you know, you and I on Sundays. I mean,
there was always a George Michael tune mixed there in
favorite Artist. I think we'll have to get one in tonight.
I I was debating whether I try to U do
the monkey dance you know from that video, and then
I decided to tell me about it are you talking
(57:23):
to you know? I mean, I don't know. I mean,
but for the rest of American they may not know
what I'm talking about. It's a pretty bad jacket. Yeah yeah,
the whole denim outfit. Well, I haven't tried to pull
that one off. He's got the he's got the white
tank top, the running around. Yeah, yeah, you have it. Yeah, yeah,
(57:44):
good stuff. Well, tweet out a link to that video
for you as a video accompaniment. He's sprinted in like
Cowboy boots, which I thought was amazing in that in
that video. By the way, did it ever make you
want to go buy Cowboy? Oh? I have another good guy.
It's Cowboy boots. I just have a wide foot so
it doesn't you know, it's not great for me. Custom made,
(58:04):
custom paid, custom fitted. Dan Buyer. I've got a nice
pink Cowboy hat. If you ever need to you go
out and about here in Los Angeles. How about this
for you. It's the Jason Smith Show with Mike Carmen
Smith off tonight, Dan Buyer. Uh, the voice you here
with me? Uh? He's week days with Doug Gottlieb most days,
but right now he's hanging out and waxing poetic over
(58:27):
pop culture and all things sports with me on Mike Carmen.
Thanks for being part of our our family here. You
can find Dan on Twitter at Dan Buyer on Fox,
on Instagram at is it still buyer Things by your
Grams byre Grams now? Yes, yes, the other one got
hacked by your dram got hacked and then I had
to go to Buyer Things that I got buy your Grams.
(58:48):
So it's kind of, you know, sitting in the middle,
but you know, slowly with surely. By the way, Who's
Yours was on FS one and that you know, we
took a trip to go to all things Who's your great?
So you can see some the pictures if you're a
if you're a fan of the movie Hoosiers, well and
your wife was draining threes, it was yes, she was
on fire from downtown. Uh yeah, and if if things
(59:12):
go south buyer Grahams you could probably do some other
business with that. I'm over at swollen Dome on all
of those uh different social media services as well. Dan,
If you've done any headline reading of late for different
quarterbacks and their activities, um, I've done some headline reading,
whether specifically are you getting to Mike, Well, I'm going
(59:34):
to the Tom Brady world and how these workouts are characterized,
and as we talked with Jason Cole a little bit
earlier in the show, um derisive, I think would be
the kind way to put the way. Uh. Folks are
looking at Tom Brady and his Buccaneers teammates going through
their paces after the nfl p A said, hey, we
(59:54):
do we don't advise working out. We kind of advise
against it. But to me, unless you're put in discipline
in place, you're really not dissuading it. Guys that are
gonna want to work out, we are still gonna work out. Uh.
Case in point, Matthew Stafford still hosting Lions work out
against nfl l p A advice, okay, cool, tom Brady
headlines ready tom Brady continues to ignore COVID advice and
(01:00:18):
suggestions from nfl p A. Next from O'Connor, tom Brady's
personal work arts are a bad example, and then from
USA Today nfl p A not happy with tom Brady's
unsolicited practices quote not in the best interest of player safety.
(01:00:38):
Mm hmm. The editorializing as opposed to, hey, you know,
tom Brady still working out. Now let's now let's go
and castigate and chastise him for this and and I
guess it goes back to the mask no mask arguments
on a larger scale and safety. Well that's right, Yeah,
there's part of it. And listen, there's there's you know,
(01:01:01):
the relationship that Bob Kraft had with with President Trump,
Tom Brady's relationship with the President. I think that those
are things that UM people will draw to, maybe in
a political manner. You mentioned Matthew Stafford working out. I
remember seeing a video of Derek Carr throwing to raiders
receivers recently, and I apologize for not knowing if it
(01:01:22):
was if it was if you know, if it was
something that was you know, just with four guys. It
seemed to be a lot more than that though, and
guys getting their workouts. But again, Mike, if if three
guys do the same thing and one of them is
Tom Brady, tom Brady is going to get the headlines.
But there's so much more to this. Jason Cold talking
about Yeah, Brady's ready to you know, he's got that edge.
(01:01:45):
I also think it's you know, Brady in an essence
as well, if being like I've only got three more years,
you know, like like it's not like I can also
can can stop and just turn this thing on at
forty two, he may have maybe more of a reason
to do so of trying to keep these sort of things.
Maybe we're trying to turn a political Sure, seems like
his statement on Instagram didn't make it a political thing
(01:02:07):
with his FDR quote, the only thing we have to fear?
Did you not hear Living Color while you while you
in your head right the Cult of Personality video? Come on,
tell me you didn't have that? While I don't know
(01:02:27):
if that was good enough? Only thing we have to fear? Uh, yeah, exactly,
But I just as you as you said, Matthew Stafford's
like getting any pub Derek Carr wasn't isn't getting any flak,
but Tom Brady is. But it's also I think Tom
(01:02:49):
you know, Tom Brady also then you know, takes his
own you know, little dig with with the FDR. It's
a it's listen if if it's a back in fourth
sort of thing, like I don't think that we should
look at Tom Brady is being victimized here if he's
the one that's ready to give it back. No, and
then it's not a victimization, it's just kind of a characterization.
(01:03:10):
I think the curiosity as opposed to, hey, Tom Brady
still working out, it's just word choice in terms of
headlines right as to where you're gonna get your clicks,
because now it's antagonistic. And certainly he's got his TB
twelve line of supplements and vitamins that you know, unnerve
some folks and get them a bit excitable at times
(01:03:32):
for the wellness products as you go through, and you
can go through the the different ingredients for each thing,
and while if you're a nutritionist you can tell me
whether it's good, bad, or indifferent. Uh, Sometimes it's just
a state of mind and you feel like you're doing
something to make yourself better, even if clinically maybe there's
no direct effect. Maybe there's that placebo effect that comes
(01:03:56):
into just thinking I'm doing my best practices to get better.
But he's having fun, right that we know he's talking
about his his teammate. And have you had the other
guy I remember working out with folks was Lamar Jackson, Right,
but it was more than Antonio Brown showed up than
anything about Lamar Jackson. Sure, and and you know Russell
(01:04:18):
Wilson was a sawn the video recently, you know, throwing
passes the DK metcalf you know. I mean they're the
only two on the field. Um. I don't know if
there are other people behind the camera. But again, if
if you know when when you're Tom Brady, Tom Brady
is going to get the headlines fair or unfair, and
he just chooses to then turn it around and put
it on those who say it. Yeah, I think when
(01:04:39):
we start throwing in the the bad example, I don't
know if they've got to show Hey, here's my fifteen
minutes of how we prepped for this, this workout. Would
that satisfy people? In the end, We'll find out whether
they were safe or not? Right, I mean, if they
(01:05:00):
all test positive than clearly in that little quasi bubble
like we like using the term bubble, but in their lives,
then maybe they didn't, right, And that's if they're willing
to assume the risk. How do I how do I
fight against that? Right? You want to be smart, I
(01:05:20):
want to be safe as best you can, but there's
a little bit of an inherent risk. But I would
like to think with their Brady, with his last couple
of years or last year or whatever of football, last
to whatever it is. Gronkowsk is already talking about multiple
years and whatever else in his Instagram stuff that you're
(01:05:43):
gonna be as cautious with your body. And for him
at this point, other than one freak injury in his
NFL career, he's done everything he can to keep his
body right. So don't I have to give him the
benefit of the doubt. Well, there's I think that. Also
there's the and if foul in So now we have
the Hall of Fame ceremonies and the Hall of Fame
(01:06:06):
opener canceled. The NFL now is starting to have to
make tough decisions, Mike. And so those are the things
that are now popping up something they really didn't have
to do during this entire pandemic. So now when the
decisions are becoming, you know, tougher, because they could have
they could just do whatever they wanted because there were
no games played. You only missed offseason workouts. Yeah, nobody
(01:06:28):
was allowed in buildings, but it it really didn't doesn't
resonate with the fans or the people. So the NFL
kind of got off Scott free in essence, and the
draft actually worked out better than it did, you know,
then then they could have hoped. So the NFL is
almost you know, is is sitting there on borrowed time
and now all of a sudden it's time to pay
the rent when you have to start canceling these games.
(01:06:51):
And now you're wondering, Okay, what's it, you know, what
does it? What does it look like if if guys
are working out in the NFL hasn't even had an
opportunity any to really get back, and when we find
out our things. I mean, I'm telling you the news
update and I'm about to tell you in three minutes
on how many Clemson football players have tested positive, you know,
for for coronavirus. And now you're saying, well, alright, percentages,
(01:07:13):
we're looking at all these numbers. The point being is
the NFL a hasn't even had a chance to get back,
and so I think that's why they're like, hey, let's,
you know, let's be really careful with this because hopefully
when we do get back, we are we don't have
those huge numbers. Because if they have those huge numbers, Mike,
it doesn't matter if it's connected or not connected. To
its workouts. That's how it's going to be perceived, and
(01:07:36):
that would be dangerous for the NFL. And I think
Warren Moon still has a couple of throws left in
his shoulder, Dan, we can bring him up, uh as
a option to replace quarterbacks as necessary, obviously the little
tongue in cheek, but just the idea. Also, I mean,
I'm curious because they've been rumblings of NBA groups of
(01:07:58):
players working out together almost to a all right, if
we're gonna get it, let's all get it now before
we have to go into the bubble or before we
start a season and and just get past it as
best we can. And and obviously there's risk associated with
that as well, right, But but I mean, there's been
speculation that you've got a number of teams that have
(01:08:18):
been working out together. Nobody's confirming any of these, but
it's the well, there's a rich guy here and a
rich guy there that has the right place for them
to get into and out of without being seen. And
you know, almost like they're going to the bat cave
uh and sneaking under cover of night uh and then
rolling back out in their civilian clothes. A little bit later.
(01:08:41):
But it it's just the curiosity of trying to keep
this going and looking for that sense of normalcy. And
for the NFL as to your point, Yeah, they they
haven't had to until the Hall of Fame game and ceremonies.
They've been able to dodge it because they weren't on
the clock for their seasons. Yeah, and I think they could,
(01:09:01):
you know. I mean one of the things that we,
you know, commend Adam Silver for is immediately shutting down
the NBA season on the Rudy Gobert. I mean, I
think that maybe not everybody's praising Adam Silver for it,
but on the flip side of things, the NFL has
also gone business as usual. So if there's a huge
outbreak of numbers, the perception is going to be that
the NFL didn't handle its business. And I think that's
(01:09:22):
something that they and the players Union want to get
ahead of. All about public perception as well, right considering, uh,
they've been ham handed on so many things in the
last few years, Uh, no question about it. Be sure
to catch live editions of The Jason Smith Show with
Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific
(01:09:43):
on Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio. Hey,
great eggs, welcome back in well preview of the slide
over Baby Our It's some cool Alto Sacks noticed, I
said Sacks with an A. Gotta make sure you enunciate properly. Hey,
it's Fox Sports Trading on the Jason Smith Show with
Mike Harmon. H Jason is out tonight, Dan Buyer, in
(01:10:05):
with me having some fun with you. Thanks for being
part of our extended family. We've got all the crew
together as you'd want on a on a Friday, everybody
in studio. It's good to see the team had to
come in and check things out. We've all got our
masks on or staying the hell away from each other.
A lot of screaming, So the voice is getting a
little rough, Dan Buyer, because you know, screaming down the hallway, Hey,
(01:10:28):
how are you? Everything good at home? It gets at
least right and that and that's to be safe and
then you know, expectorating. It's it's a bad thing, you know,
I mean, we're they we're just energetic people. We're playing
by the rules. That's all. That's all that we are.
You know, you want to play by the rules. The
family is together all right, So why don't you lead
(01:10:49):
us in? Yeah, let's play the few and to get
the Fox family together, Fox Family made up Tonight up,
Mike Harmon, Hey, Bow Benson, Hey, how's it going? And
Nick Batagley are associate producer tonight. Hey, I'm happy to
be here, all right. Usually we uh, we like to
get to the pleasant trees. See everybody's doing. But let's
(01:11:11):
get right down to brass tacks. To aid answers on
the board, there is a pass available a k a.
The ty shirt rule. But the pass is available. If
you don't know an answer, you can use it. I
will give you the answer and then you can move
on in the game. However, the pass will to not
be available to anyone else in the game. Three strikes
and you're out. You guys, ready to play the feud?
(01:11:32):
Top eight answers on the board. Earlier on the show
with Jason Cole, We mentioned that the Steelers Cowboys Hall
of Fame game obviously canceled by the NFL. Steelers and Cowboys,
the two teams that have played in the most Hall
of Fame games, by the way, in Canton, Ohio. That's
not what I want to know. I want to know
the eight NFL teams who have appeared in the Hall
of Fame game in Canton, Ohio the least amount of times. Yes,
(01:11:54):
there are eight teams the fewest appearances in the Hall
of Fame game in Canton, Ohio. Mike Carmen, we start
with you Browns. You gotta have Hall of famers to
play in that game, all right, show he the Cleveland Browns. O.
You kind of have to dissect this question in a
lot of different ways to to maybe figure out the pattern.
(01:12:17):
Over to bow Benson. One strike on the board. Board
is clear. Looking at the NFL teams who have appeared
the least amount of times in the Hall of Fame game.
I'm gonna go with the Seattle Seahawks, all right, show
me the Seahawks. Yes, just twice in the Seahawks history,
twice the Seahawks have appeared. Let's go over to Alex
tie shirt. Dan, you lied to me before the show
(01:12:41):
right now because you said that this is something I
can participate in. You said top eight, we'd nation shows
on the board, and I was ready and gunning. That's
your reality chat went back to another podcast, Dan, I
love you. Let's go with Pittsburgh. Okay, I just told
you two minutes ago that the Steeler have appeared in
the Hall of Fame game, so most of any teams. Okay,
(01:13:08):
let's made fun of the Browns tie shirt. I love
this show. Let's go with how about how Man is
still available? By the way, I don't want to give
up it already, but uh man, I don't want to
say them too, not the Browns. Let's just say any
NFL team. Why don't we go with Baltimore? Show me
(01:13:32):
the Ravens. Yeah, I don't know. Once that's a lot
of filipbuster. Oh man, you got one right, all right,
let's go over there a p Nick Pataglia. I'm gonna
go with the Houston Texans. Show me that Texans. Show
me those bull horns. There you go. Also, just one
(01:13:54):
appearance for the Texans. Back around to Mike Carmen. The Bengals.
Cincinnati Bengal is a team that's been on for a
while making fun of the show me the Bengals. Man, No,
I know they're close, but I figured they just say
screw you, you stink. Alright, bo Bent's in a pass
is still available? Um, I'm I guess the Atlanta Falcons. Okay,
(01:14:16):
the Atlanta Falcons. Now the guys are that doesn't sound good? Yeah,
we're done. Think about this game that's probably gone on
for years. So there's some teams in the league that
maybe have not been around longer than other teams in
the National Football League. Definitely show be the Falcons, okay, alright,
(01:14:40):
lo the Rams okay, the Rams, Jaguars, yes, Chargers, yes, Panthers, yes.
Who else stinks or perennial losers to mock them? What
about the Cardinals? Uh No, they were close, The Buccaneers okay,
(01:15:00):
and the j E. T S Jet Jets. Yet it
fits our loser category, that's for sure. Oh man, I
really let you down. You're the football guy. Well I
thought it was, yeah, because I rememorized the Hall of
Fame bleeping. I thought that the Ravens, Texans, Panthers, and
(01:15:22):
Jaguars are gonna be the obvious answers, and then it
was figuring out who else was there. But yeah, just
basically for you know, their newer teams and there as much.
But all right, hey, all families aren't great. Yeah, we
will be fighting over the Turkey T shirt. There you go.
That's the first that is zero. How did that feel
(01:15:44):
for you? Nick? Did it leave you satisfied? It doesn't
even SAPPI because I had lost, I got more wrong
in TI shirt. Wow, he takes a dig and TI
shirt on the way out. Family is all together, no
question about it. Hey, We're gonna make fun of the
Browns again. Next here on five. Be sure to catch
live editions of The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon
weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific. Great eggs
(01:16:08):
welcome in halftime show. They're clearing the field. The disco
ball stays down though. The Jason Smith Show with Mike
Harman Jason Smith off tonight. My man damn Buyer stands
in tonight at Dan Bayer on Fox. Where you find
him on Twitter find me over at Swollen Dome. The
lead story tonight is the schedule put forth by the
(01:16:31):
NBA every bit of little momentum. And I've used the
reference quite often. The old Dante Culpepper when he was
quarterbacking and dominating for the Minnesota Vikings. He'd do that
little thing, the hand roll as they pick up first
down after first down, big demonstrative, you know, throws and
then the little momentum thing, and that's what we've got
(01:16:52):
right now in the sporting world. Yes, we've got positive
cases of COVID nineteen and some of those concerns are
certainly out there, as they are throughout society when we
see spikes in different states and trying to make sense
of how each state has gone about trying to expand. Uh.
(01:17:13):
They're people's ability to get back to work, to get
back out into restaurants and bars. We know both Texas
and Florida pulled back as of noon today Eastern time.
No more let's it get your carry out booze and
gome uh and changing rules in municipalities all over this country,
(01:17:33):
and the big political fight. And look, we've had the
discussions here in in nights prior Smith and I. You
can find those on the podcast, iTunes, Google Play, wherever
you pull them down, give them five stars, leave a comment.
Will love you forever, And as soon as I'm able
with my mask or socially distance, I'll give you a
hug coach to coach, no question about it. I'm like
(01:17:54):
a big teddy bear. Everybody wants to give me a
big hug. Why Because I'm just so damn lovable. But
the idea being that we're we're finding just pieces of
information to have some positivity. Here's a schedule Major League
Baseball in their agreement earlier this week. Sure, the devil's
still in the details of how it comes to fruition,
but you've got momentum. And part of it is just
(01:18:15):
a giant dollar sign hanging out there for everybody to
to realize and actualize for each of these leagues and
the players associations. But a lot of it falls back
into society and and a bit of the the normalcy, right,
that feel good approach to it all. Uh, to get
(01:18:36):
folks back in the proper frame of mind because yelling
at a manager in his an aptitude, or the guy
leaving a runner on base with less than two outs,
how do you not get him over? Or going all
the way down in the NBA and not being able
to hit a shot in the final minutes of a game,
all of those things, Uh, we need, we long for that.
(01:18:57):
We need that. People arguing about see in fifteen and
grays Anatomy, I think they're done with it or whatever
other reality shows have been recycled to give you just
an extra glimpse. I love Josh gad and is let's
gather people that were in movies together from thirty years ago.
I'm done with it. Okay, that was month one, and
everybody else is still waiting on Mount Rushmore a month.
(01:19:18):
You know what, it's not gonna happen because we're gonna
have live sports. Okay, all those top five lists they like,
and we like to rank stuff here, Dan Buyer and
I especially, we're actually thinking of promoting a whole line
of things called rank stuff. But the the idea being
we're gonna have a glut of sports if we can
pull this off. And now it's all best practices and
(01:19:40):
partnerships between the league and their players and those that
are being brought in and partnered with to help pull
this off. And I think that's the curious thing Dan,
as we go forward, is the best practices and those
partners as they're chosen. Uh, they've got to be vetted properly. Uh.
And probably you're looking at pretty sizeable contracts when it's
(01:20:03):
all said done to get this thing finished. No options
are risk free right now. It's not me saying that.
Those are the words of Adam Silver, and I think
that's you know, it's part of what you're talking about
just of trying to get this thing to work and
trying to get this thing through. I mean, the TV
schedule is gonna be very friendly, and there's gonna be
three courts. Two of them are gonna be um be
(01:20:25):
able to be broadcast when these games are gonna be playing.
It's my understanding to whether it be on ESPN or
ABC or NBA TV or or t N T over
the games are gonna end up being but you're gonna
be having a lot of basketball. You're gonna have a
lot of basketball starting at noon Eastern time on some days,
and you're not gonna have the ten thirty Eastern time
(01:20:46):
tip because the games will only be in Orlando. So
you know, there's some positivities for those of us sitting
at home, but you have to also realize the understanding,
the huge undertaking that's going on in Orlando to make
this sort of thing go on. Yeah, I mean, you
still got all all sorts of folks who aren't necessarily
going back to their office so soon. So you know what,
instead of another episode of Law and Order or let's
make a deal, maybe they've got to issue that that
(01:21:08):
viewing of the prices, right, Dan, I don't know, let's
not be ridiculous, screen, Let's make a deal. You can
skip that that one is that you can you can
bypass that woman, Yeah, you can't miss the prices, right.
Didn't think you were gonna get game show talk, did
you know? Uh? Dan Buyer is the our resident and
game show expert. And if I were programming in network,
(01:21:30):
I'd be just tapping into his brain. I'd be going
like that Batman movie with the Riddler when he just
put that thing, the suction thing on your head and
just draw whatever thoughts you have because I'd be able
to program networks and make billions. Let's uh, you know,
there's got to be something up there. There's there's gotta
be something up there. So maybe that's what. Well you
(01:21:50):
got that you've got your your logos, your colors, I mean,
you've got you take care of your house, You've you've
learned gardening, you uh, grilling trips. Yeah, try to you
know man, uh with no pier here in Fox Sports,
I appreciate that. It's good to be it's good to
(01:22:10):
be with you tonight and hanging out and yeah, I
mean I'm glad that the the NBA schedule came out.
It's it's yeah, I guess it's in a way, it's
striking a balance of what the league is trying to
do just get their games in trying to get their
eight seeding games is which I think is very unique phrasing.
I'm actually not going to fault them for it. I
(01:22:32):
think that it would be difficult to resume a regular
season when not all teams are playing the same amount
of games, so so to call them seeding games, I
think is unique. But I thought that the NBA could
have done some other things in this whole process. But
just for the fact that we have games, um, I'm
glad that that we now have. All right, we can
look forward to Pelicans Jazz starting things off on ju
(01:22:55):
Will we get the brand new Zion I think it's
I think that the NBA has also made quite a
statement with that opening set of games. Because you touched
Senate earlier, it's the second time Clippers and Lakers are
going to be opening this season, which is crazy. But
as as I mentioned last hour, and for those that
may have missed it, the Lakers, if they win this game,
(01:23:16):
could basically wrap up the number one seed in the
Western Conference, So you kind of have to get this
game in early because you don't want it later on
when it doesn't have any meaning. But I think that
the first game is is even more intriguing, Mike, because
not only is it Zion and the Pelicans, and so
much was made of the NBA expanding from sixteen teams
to to have these twenty two so Zion could play.
(01:23:38):
You also have the team that shut down the league. Well, yeah,
the team that everybody thought was they just start fighting
each other as soon as they looked at each other
in the eye. Again, Yes, and I think that it
is a big statement by the NBA to come out
and put the Utah Jazz in that first game. I
think it's a it's a way to I don't know
their goal. I don't know if it's to show that look,
(01:24:00):
you know, like Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell can move
past this when they're healthy of athletes. Yeah, that's what
I mean. Like is that the is that the the
impression of it. But I don't think it's any coincidence
that those teams, you take the two most marketable teams
with the Clippers and Lakers, that you you could have
put them going head to head, and then you put
(01:24:22):
Zion probably your most marketable player outside of Lebron, and
then you've got the jazz. I think. I think it's
so you know, carefully constructed, that that's how the NBA
would play out. I I may, I can't fault them,
but I think that they're attacking all of their storylines
and putting it all in on on night number one.
St so smart because you get caught up in that
(01:24:44):
day one and then we'll see how it flows from there. Right,
Obviously you're hoping for the best. The quote from Silver
is it echoes everything I've been saying for months. None
of it's perfect unless you curl into the fetal position
with your family and none of you ever leave. You
don't get take out, you don't order in. You have
nothing but rice and beans or whatever sitting in your
(01:25:05):
storage area. Maybe a bunch of tunic cans. I don't know,
but that that's it. And you haven't left your house
since the middle of March or maybe longer. Right, because
we had guys that were sick up in here in
Fox Sports Radio back in December, Dan, where I I
questioned months later, you know, was that the beginning of it.
I don't know or what did they just have a
(01:25:26):
really nasty flu? Yeah, I mean we don't we don't know. No,
we don't know. And I think that that we still
are continuing to learn and and I I, you know,
person thinks some people don't want to listen and try
to learn and learning more about it. So I just
go back to just doing your part. And yeah, you're
right to to have the risk of of being out
(01:25:47):
there that everybody assumes some risk, whether you go to
the grocery store, you go to you know there there
is a risk. But you can also um try to
limit the exposure that you have and mitigate it where
you can. Yeah, absolute, Yeah, it's it's it's I mean,
you know, we may joke that, yeah, you can't be
you know, locked up in your house for so long,
but no, there are people that have been you know
(01:26:09):
that that did that for a long amount of time
and it took themselves out and they were doing their part.
And I think that's all that that you can ask,
That's all that I ask of of anybody doing this well. Well,
put at Dan Buyer on Foxes where you find Dan
you hear on weekdays here on Fox Sports Radio on
the Doug Gottlieb Show on Mike Carmen Smith is off tonight,
(01:26:29):
He'll be back on Monday. We're coming to Alive from
the Geico Fox Sports Radio Studios fifteen minutes. Can say
or more on your car insurance. She can go to
Geico dot com get yourself a free rate. Quote. This
one was good from Mike Tannebaum. We played a little
game with headlines earlier of how Tom Brady's continued workouts
with his Bucketeers teammates have been characterized Dan uh this
(01:26:51):
one making the the rounds and tanning bombs quote. Baker
Mayfield will reportedly be on a very short leash as
Brown's starting quarterbacks. Kevin Stefanski comes in. We actually have
the the audio, we can actually hear. I'm gonna go
ahead and be the negative guy anyway. Let's ask the
(01:27:12):
question of how long at leash do you give him
if say he goes out first game of the season
and throws let's say three picks Ryan a very very
short leash. I know Kevin Stefanski really well. He's smart,
he's deliberate, he's disciplined. He will have zero compunction to
bench Baker Mayfield. Baker Mayfield will not throw toy one
(01:27:34):
interceptions because when he's on track to do that, he'll
be standing next to Kevin on the sidelines. Look at
what Kirk Cousins did last year, great offense, six interceptions,
So I know, Kevin, the standards are gonna be high time.
The standards are high everything he's got case keenum In,
in fact, to remember, had had a big year as
(01:27:54):
the Vikings quarterback seemingly seven lifetimes ago. But the the
idea that Baker Mayfield is any way, shape or form
going to be housted. He might be done after the
end of the year. But if he comes off on
a bad start or two and he's turning the ball over, yeah,
not positive, and he's gonna get crushed in Cleveland. He's
(01:28:17):
not getting benched. Well, I would hope not. I would
hope that there wouldn't be a short leash for Baker Mayfield.
Considering this is also as an organization that would need
to have the decision on Baker Mayfield on if they
think he's their future quarterback or not after this season.
So it really doesn't help a lot to be like,
all right, we're benching him in week one or week
(01:28:37):
two and taking him off the field because of a
three interception game. He got the word compunction into damn.
That was pretty good. That's It's more than I could do.
But it's just it doesn't it doesn't make a lot
of sense. And you know, there are certain things with
the Browns that don't necessarily make a lot of sense.
And I think that you know, having the the amounest
(01:28:59):
skill position players of who they have on their team
right now is there are some NFL teams that can
only dream of having across the board. But but but
number one, you give the ball to Nick Chubb, is
is your first That is that is what you do.
Number Two, you just paid a lot of money to
Austin Hooper in free Agencoper drives the boat. Chief. Yeah,
(01:29:21):
Jarvis Landry is a guy that Baker Mayfield seemed to
really have the chemistry with. So now you kind of
have the outlining of of who's on your team. And
I know I didn't mention Nodell Beckham Jr. And but's
he's obviously there. The point being, Mike is there's enough
people around you know, the Cleveland Browns too, around Baker
(01:29:41):
Mayfield to have success. If he's gonna throw three interceptions,
then there may be I mean, you hand the ball
off to Nick Job, you get the ball to Austin Hooper,
you get the ball to Jervis Landry and Oh b
J and you should be fine. There's no reason for
Baker Mayfield to take chances, not with the talent around him.
But if you're gonna give up him in week four
doesn't bode well for your long term planning, considering you've
(01:30:04):
had no offseason with the new head coach, realistically, and
you still haven't taken the guy first overhaul in the draft,
you know, two and a half years ago. Doesn't make
a lot of sense to quit on him early. Yeah,
just look look at what they have. I mean, defensively,
you get Garrett back off his big suspension, so upfront him,
Richardson and Vernon. I mean you you've got a defense
(01:30:26):
that should be able to get after opposing quarterbacks. Uh,
some great players in the second area as well. So
if he's throwing the ball often enough to where you're
looking at multiple interceptions, it's either up just an awful
game or your game plan stunk and the rest of
your team failed. Look at look at what the Buccaneers
did with Jamis Winston, right, I mean they allowed him
(01:30:50):
to throw thirty three interceptions, right, I mean that's true.
They basically allowed him to do it. They gave him
every single opportunity to win the job. Why because they
saw talent there that that they knew that there was
something that that could maybe pay off for the franchise.
That he was also their first overall pick. They allowed
(01:31:11):
him to throw thirty three interceptions in a season, and
then they made up their decision. And if you're the
Browns and you want to have the quick cook on
Baker Mayfield after two and a quarter season of him
on his third head coach, get the guy a break.
I mean, seriously, who's the real problem with If you're
gonna already give up on the quarterback and give him
(01:31:32):
the quick hook after a three interception game, you gotta
give him some more leeway. You know, it's to case Keenum,
you know, come on, now, at this point, he's just
kind of bouncing around. Look, he's not a bad backup plan.
Should Mayfield get hurt, right, but obvious, especially with all
that weaponry around him. But didn't even suggests that there
(01:31:55):
there's the potential of him being ousted because of his play. Yeah,
seems in ludicrous to me, And I don't mean that,
and and I'm not trying to be disrespectful at all
the case Keenum. The point being is Case Keendom is
a veteran quarterback that has been around the NFL. It's
not like you're pulling Baker to get a look at
your fourth round pick that you're like, hey, maybe this
guy is a chance at something. No, it's not what
(01:32:16):
you're doing. You are riding or dying with Baker Mayfield,
and you better, you know, you better allow him the
opportunity to try to at least figure a way to
work it out. Yeah, big curiosity rolling forward. You know,
Jason and I are having the conversation as related to
the Jets, and we'll get into Adam Gaze and Jamal
Adams in a bit. But whenever we talk about organizations,
you always got to remember the owner is not going
(01:32:38):
anywhere unless they really do something off the grid, and
a dollar Donald Sterling situation presents itself. Nobody's walking away
from the cash cow, so you're stuck, which means with
the Browns, I wouldn't be shocked if something actually happened
and transpired here, and they tried to take power away
from Stefanski on high I'd like to think that's not
(01:33:00):
the case. Not so you bench. Let's just hypothetical. Let's
go through the scenario. You bench Baker Mayfield and case
Keenan comes in and throws three touchdowns. Now you've got
a quarterback controversy. Guess what else you have? You have
Baker Mayfield under contract another season, you know, and any
coach you just paid a ton of money to come up. Yeah,
and then what do you do because you've probably declined
(01:33:20):
his fifth year option. He's in a you know, play
or you know or not play sort of season maker
break season, and I've got that hanging over the organization's head.
Just doesn't make a lot of sense. I just like
chaos theory and whenever the Browns are involved, that's really
all we have. Dan. He's Dan Buyer and for Jason
Smith on Mike Armen The Jason Smith Show with Mike
Armen from the Geico Studios coming up next. Major League
(01:33:43):
Baseball hasn't given us their schedule yet, but we did
get a list of f a qes. Dan, We'll go
through some of the protocol next here on Fox. Be
sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith Show
with Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern seven pm

(01:34:05):
Friday night, dj Alex tie shirt, getting it done, Tight shirt.
You want to plug the podcast? Well, look man, you
want to go video games because you got me watching Twitch.
I'm waiting for someone to actually play a game instead
of talking. Welcome to Twitch. Play a game. Uh, plug
(01:34:25):
a ball team? You know what this thing run. Let's
give love to the weaves and gaming community at weave
Nation podcast. We're slowly climbing. We got Sinbad who seems
to be wanting to partner up with us. And we
also got the conscious stuff for people trying to motivate
themselves and make a better life for themselves, which is
shallow oceans, nicely done, nicely done, good things. And Bo
(01:34:46):
Bo wants in. He wants to tag into Bo Benson,
I mean producing tonight show. What do you got if
we're plugging podcasts? And I would say that me and
the fellow producer, Ryan Burshinger have a baseball podcast called
called The Swing Shift with Ryan and Bow. Check it
out and in a couple of weeks you'll actually talk
about some baseball. Yeah for sure. We have you know,
six episodes, so check us out. Nicely done, any guests
(01:35:08):
on that show. We are trying for Rob Parker, but
we'll let you know. We reached out to you, damn,
but got denied. That is not true. That was a
pretty weak after. Could have either said Dan, could have
said we tried harm and he stiff armed us. Uh yeah,
I mean immediately and say, let's dave. Everybody else in
(01:35:28):
the network. Harmon was just voicemail. Every time they send
me an email. Hey Dan, Ryan and Bow here, we
were just wondering if you could not come on our podcast.
That's what they he said. It's all good. It's all good.
No no anger or animosity or angst around he sparts
at all. Uh As you know, the less I have
(01:35:49):
to talk about baseball, the better. There you go. Yeah,
there it is nicely done. We'll get our fantasy for
another another that's a different story. Well, I mean you
and I aventually will start doing him gaming. We'll get
back into those old football games that we uh we
talked about on Sunday mornings, No question about that. Maybe
some fantasy football like we'll talk about again in about
(01:36:11):
fifteen minutes from now, we'll continue our or finish our
first round draft, the mock Draft Part one. Maybe we
can uncover how DeAndre Hopkins went second overall in our draft.
That's why he's doing a baseball podcast. What are you
talking about? It's the man crush of DeAndre Hopkins, that's
(01:36:32):
all that is, uh, and the liking of him being
away from Bill O'Brien. Can I say that? Is that? Okay?
Is that fair? All right? Maybe something to that. Well, Hey,
if the the other speed receivers could stay healthy, maybe
you would have had something popping a little bit more.
But he moves on. Uh, in a way we go.
We'll get back into the second half of our mock
(01:36:54):
draft here coming up fifteen minutes from now. But Major
League Baseball put out a bunch of it's uh f aques, Dan.
We don't have the schedule. Uh. The NBA stole the
spotlight there tonight, but we have all these other pieces
that have come into play with the sixty games schedule.
We'll hear more about its finalization right trying to reduce travel.
(01:37:15):
So you'll probably see five games series and things of
that nature. And we've got the tenth inning runner on
second base that stays. The one thing I didn't particularly
care the rule. You know, every some folks got into
the I don't want the d H. Traditionally it's like,
look pictures, don't want to do it, and I don't
want to see it. And the double switches, the blackjack
(01:37:36):
cards you can buy for nine cents in Las Vegas.
Before you sit down at a table, it's the sixth inning.
My guys strowing, how many pitches? What's the score and situation? Yes,
I want to do a double switch. Uh. The one
that I don't like is the three bat or minimum,
like you can tell after a couple of pitches, or
maybe you got the the flip flop of the lefty
(01:37:57):
righty and a little bit of the stratege injury as
it were there that gets eliminated. And the three batter minimum.
I know you want to speed things up, and perhaps
for this year you put it in saying all right,
it's fewer calls to the pen, lesser activity or something,
and you could try to find some kind of medical
reason that this is good otherwise it's a bunch of
(01:38:20):
protocols about testing and positive tests along the way, the
regular injured list will be in effect. But it's just
now the curiosity. We start getting the details from the
leads as to how they're going to process these and
and everybody just adamant. Look, one positive test isn't gonna
(01:38:41):
take us down, So everybody needs to stop asking that question. Well,
you know at your point about the three better minimum.
While I think that Major League Baseball publicly says it's
a way for us to speed up the game because
pitching changes do take up time. And if if you
can use one picture instead of three in a situation
(01:39:02):
to speed the game's up, uh great, that's that's awesome.
We don't have a couple of trips to the bullpen.
But also, Mike, I would say that there may be
an underlying thing with Major League Baseball, who always wants
more offense, whether it be juiced balls or not looking
at steroids. They feel that offense cells. And if you
can get more offense, which I think is what you
(01:39:24):
would get in this situation because you aren't allowed to
make your changes with batters, that could also be an
underlying reason that maybe Major League Baseball wouldn't admit the
reason for the change. As long as we go to
more of a more than a three outcome league. Okay,
that's done. Its home runs, strikeouts, and walks. That's what
it's all about as as we go forward, but just
(01:39:47):
the curiosities of it all, and when there's still not
a lot as related to at least in what I've
read about overall roster sizes, maybe maybe they'll get a
little bit more thirty man roster the first two weeks,
next two and twenty six for the remainder of the season,
that say, as it stands right now, uh, and that
(01:40:07):
they're gonna have to submit a list of sixty players
that will be eligible because with the minor leagues blown up,
you don't have any moving parts there, which is, you know,
one of the sad parts that rolls through. We're gonna
get our major League Baseball back, but all those minor
league parks will remain empty. But the call to the
(01:40:28):
pen back to that though, Dan, I mean, there's a
lot of sponsors. Man, this call to the pen brought
to you by insert here. I mean that's another mention
they don't get. I I don't mind the move. I like,
I think now we'll as well find out who really
are the guys you know righting. You know, it doesn't
matter if it's righty against righty, righty against lefty. You're
(01:40:50):
gonna find the guys who get guys out. And let's
be honest. And in a closer situation, you know, your
closer is facing whoever right and that's that's who it is.
And now you just kind of maybe expect it from
your setup. Guys. There you go, they pushing uh the
envelope a little bit in the expectations. Hey, in theory
that will earn them more money if they perform in
(01:41:12):
these situations as well, you know. Yeah, And and I
think that there's a lot I mean, I don't know
if you're opening Pandora's box with this with the rule,
but think about it, Mike, Let's just take let's just
take uh, you know, the Brewers for example, because they've
used Josh Hayder in so many different situations. And now
if you're in a situation that is crunch time, and
(01:41:33):
do you know, do you really want to save the
guy for the ninth thinning where you know, the the
statisticians or the um why am I blanking on the term.
But the point metrics, the saber metrics guys knows that
they that these saves in the ninth thinning maybe not
as important. Now, maybe you turn to that, you know,
you do that sort of thing. Maybe the closer role
(01:41:54):
changes because of this. I think there's you know that
that could be the Pandora's box version of this where
things could change. And the part that I think we're
we're most intrigued by, or at least I am as
it flows through is uh the notices of fighting being
strictly prohibited. You can blunk with with with without retaliation
(01:42:15):
or at least not getting punched in the face. I
guess under this rule because I'd be curious to see
because it doesn't attach penalties, and what's been offered here, right,
we've got a list of things you can't do, like,
all right, So what happens no spitting or chewing a
tobacco or sunflower seeds? All right? What happens to me
if I do I mean, do I get a sternly
(01:42:36):
worded letter or am I facing to not give the
punishment for for this? But yeah, I don't get a warning,
get an ejection no pregame exchange, you give lineup cards.
No celebratory contact. By the way, fine with no pregame
exchange of lineup cards in tradition unlike any other. Here's
(01:42:59):
your third base coach walking up. I know that the
the Yeah, there there will be no high fives, fist bumps.
I wish they would have put four arm bashes, just
to you know, just to include the Bash brothers in there.
Frequently asked questions, but those won't be allowed either. So
I was just showing you a picture of art cards.
(01:43:21):
So that was nicely done to that point, right. We
talked about all these different pieces to Major League Baseball.
If they opened up Dodger Stadium and said ten thousand
people could go, and Dan I learned to hand you
a ticket, would you go with me? Is it personal? No? Yes?
When I go with tight shirt, yes, No. The big
(01:43:44):
just put up his hands in celebration. Yeah. Listen, And
this is the story that I've that I've said on
Doug Show. I have tickets to the Masters. I think
it's for one of the days of the Masters, and
I don't know yet a spectators will be allowed on side.
And I said, you know, like the Masters is something
that is it's a very difficult ticket to come back. Um,
(01:44:07):
you know, I could go to a Dodger game next year.
You know, I can go to a Dodger game after that.
I don't need to be around ten thousand people right now.
So I that that doesn't, that doesn't it's not something
that that I would be, you know, necessarily interested in
doing right now a buyer in the gallery. But great
though you could have like the what we can make
you the remote remote guy there with a little uh
(01:44:29):
antenna on your head. You know this, And this this
ends up translating more to the NFL because we don't
know what the NFL's plans are. We know that baseball
is are gonna have fans, so we can always we
could play the hypothetical game. But but one of the
things that that football fans do is tailgate. So not
(01:44:52):
only Mike are you exposed for those three hours in
that setting, You're exposed for ten hours in that setting
with various people moving around. I mean, if we're talking
about full capacity, and that's just not necessarily something that
you know, that that I would want to be a
part of. But to just think of, you know, to
even just put it in a three hour window, I
(01:45:13):
think is something that is not realistic. Yeah, I think
that's where for the NFL it's it's gonna be curious, right,
some talk of the dome stadiums may get a little
bit of preferential treatment, which seems curious to me. But
especially when you think football weather cold outside, Hey you're
all freezing. Nothing's happening there. Yeah, you're slobbering a little bit.
(01:45:35):
But you know, if you do the ticketing right, because
you're not going to sell the capacity. I think we're
assured of that. Uh, you can disagree, and and there'll
be plenty of fights as to how many people are
too many. We're seeing the Indie five hundred. They're talking
about capacity. We had what five thousand people had talent
Daga this past week. And you're just trying to figure
(01:45:57):
out where these different pieces. Yeah, and I think race
strikes are different. I mean just the way that they're
set up. And I mean especially you know, India's so enormous. Anyway,
you know, to putting into two putting fans there, I
think is different than putting it in a football stadium setting. See,
I'm sitting there and trying to figure out from the
electronic ticketing side of things. All right, once a four
(01:46:21):
pack is bought here, you know, you block off like
that immediately, It works too. It takes off whatever that
necessary distances, say it's eight ft ten ft, so that
four ticket purchase essentially becomes what a twenty tickets purchase,
Not that you get charged for all the seats, but
just in terms of spacing people out. Uh And it
(01:46:42):
would give room for concessions to walk through. And I've
spent way too much time thinking about this. Can't you
tell uh as to how to maximize revenue? Sure? I mean,
I mean concessions is a whole other thing. I mean,
I mean that's a bathrooms said everything else exactly. Yeah,
I mean, I mean you're gonna have the catchup dispenser.
(01:47:04):
You know, well, we're gonna have to suck up the
added cost of packets for this season, Dan, And it
just comes with it, and you end up throwing it
under your seat. You throw it under your seat? Would
you would you feel better if if everyone wore masks
going to the Dodgers standing you said you're gonna be
there like that. It doesn't that matter to you? It matters, Yeah,
(01:47:26):
I feel better about it, certainly. I mean, look, I
my argument all along day has been the you know,
people can fight about it, and if it's gonna give
me a one to half percent better chance of keeping
stuff away, it's worth it, right, right, It's what whatever
is greater than zero, I'll give it up short term.
(01:47:49):
And then obviously as science and everything else tells us
and dictates, and look, it's a moving target and we've
watched everybody that's been associated with it move that target,
uh along. So you know, trust is a four letter
word right now across America when it comes to that.
So it's a difficult proposition. But for me, I thrive
(01:48:10):
on live events, be at stage, screen, whatever it is, right,
concerts and sporting events. And as long as I'm looking
after myself, I know, going out, I'm assuming some risk,
and then you just try to be as smart about
it as you can. He's Dann Buyer on Bike Armen.
This is Fox Sports Radio. Hey Dan, what's trending? A
(01:48:31):
lot going on? And now this in Major League Baseball,
a report from ESPN says members of the Texas Rangers
front office tested positive for COVID nineteen one. Source set
employees are quote, terrified for their safety and terrified that
they may spread the virus end quote that a source
of telling ESPN that some of the workers felt pressured
(01:48:54):
to show up at the offices, and some of the
workers want to work from home and hope that the
organization will allow them to do so. More news from
Major League Baseball. Former Dodgers heull fielder Andrew Toles was
arrested after authorities found him sleeping behind the building near
the airport and Key West Florida. Tolls last played in
the Majors in and failed to report for spring training
(01:49:17):
in twenty nineteen because of personal issues. NBA released their
schedule of games that will take place in Orlando as
they attempt to finish their season starting July. They're calling
them the seeding games, eight games for each of the
twenty two teams going to Orlando. It all starts on
July thirty, with the Pelicans taking on the Jazz, followed
by the Clippers facing the Lakers. Oregon and Oregon State
(01:49:39):
have agreed to drop the name Civil War when it
came to marketing the rivalry games between the schools nine
ers in both of their first round picks. Today, defensive Lima,
Javon kin Law and wide receiver Brandon au Can. Guys,
here it is NHL Draft. A lot of Commissioner Bill
Daily with the announcement on who receives the first pick
(01:50:00):
in the NHL draft, number one overall selection of draft. Okay,
Edny guesses, you guys want to pick any teams? Bow
Alex Harmon, you've got any guesses on who won the
NHL Draft lottery? Any teams? Okay, you got the Nordeck's
big agg Who do you got the Ducks? The Ducks? Harmon,
(01:50:22):
I'm gonna go with the Bears. Alright, the Bears here
it is team yet to be determined coming from the
qualifying round. It's the worst announcement ever. You feel the
excitement there. Thing with the guy in the place to
be named later, that's oh my goodness. You know what
that is? That is going to McDonald's buying a drink
(01:50:45):
during Monopoly and getting another free drink. You just go
back like on the Monopoly game piece, you get the
same thing. You gotta go back again. The n NHL
had a draft lottery. Now they have to have another
one for the first overall pick. It is you heard,
it'll be one of the eight qualifying teams that loses
in the qualifying round, those eight teams will all have
(01:51:06):
the same odds at getting at first overall pick. Yeah,
that was a little uh enticlimactic. You know what, Hey, uh,
they move forward and if you can get them to
give us any more information of how they're can actually
play out their season exactly, He's well, that's what the
baseball players said. They finally got it. Now we just
need some hockey players to say that as well. He's
(01:51:27):
Dann Buyer in for Jason Smith on Mike Carmen as
we come to be Alive from the Geico Fox Sports
Radio Studios. Remember, it's easy to say or more on
your car insurance with Geico. You can go to Geico
dot com or call one eight hundred done four seven Auto.
The only hard part is figuring out which way is easier,
and it can't get any easier than this. We do
the back half of the first round of our mock draft. Yeah,
(01:51:48):
Fantasy football is coming people, and we're bringing you there
next on Fox. Be sure to catch live editions of
The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten
pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific I'm an as man All
things True. Fox Sports Radio, The Jason Smith Show with
Mike Carmen. That is me. Smith is off tonight. Dan
Buyer in for Jason Smith. Uh, Jason will be back.
(01:52:10):
UNI can find Dan on Twitter at Dan Byro on Fox. Uh.
You hear him every weekday here on Fox Sports Radio
on the Doug Gottlieb Show as well. Uh. So it's
time to get back into it. We did the first
half of the mock draft, going through the first round
right because July is upon us and fantasy football be
(01:52:31):
here in short order. For years on Sunday's Dan Buyer
and I we'd convene and roll through all the goodness
fantasy related. Now I think I'm gonna call him and
wake him up, and we're gonna do that again this year.
He doesn't know that yet, except I just said that
on air. That's all right. I'd love it, and I'd
love it. We gotta figure that out. Uh come out
with some kind of plant podcast video zoom calls where
(01:52:52):
we mock each other while uh crashing mini helmets into
each other whenever. It takes quick review for those that
missed it. With the number one overall pick, Dan selected
Sikon Barkley. Our producer Bo Benson took DeAndre Hopkins. Uh,
your Arizona Cardinals and his love of Kyler Murray. I
think it really was just a man crush gone amuck.
(01:53:14):
I took Christian McCaffrey, so chalk in the three hole. Uh.
Dan came back with Ezekiel Elliott, and then Bo said,
you know what, take that Hopkins, hold my beer. I'm
taking Nick Chubb in the number five spot. I be
Bold had six overall on my draft board. He went five.
There you go, because you know fortune favors the Bold. Uh.
(01:53:36):
And then I took Michael Thomas, just figuring catch radius
said it forget it. It's like the old Ronco products
right in the middle of the night on your infomercials,
thus again showing my age. But we go to the
seventh pick in the draft, Dan, where are we going? Well,
you know, I there was a reason that this guy
didn't go first overall because I think that there was
some risk and there's also the threat of him not
(01:53:58):
happy with this contract. But if I'm picking seventh and
Dalvin Cook is on the board, I am taking Dalvin Cook.
So I would take Dalvin Cook at seven. That would
be amazing if in my mind if he fell that
far in the draft. So I'm going Dalvin Cook of
the Vikings at number seven. Total yards, what touchdowns? Health
is a question, but yeah. Still, now you know the
(01:54:20):
the offense will keep moving, no more stiffun digs, but
they moved forward. Dalvin Cook off the board. Bow, what
do you got? This is gonna be a tough one
for me. Given my dislike of both the team and
the city. I was gonna guess both pick. Fact that
he's going against the city is a big I want
to see what would what would you guess? Um, let's
just say. I'll say. I'm gonna just say Venus flytrap
(01:54:42):
and then knows what I'm talking about. Who are you
gonna pick? I'm gonna take George Kittle? Oh interesting? Wow,
I thought he was going Oklahoma and Joe Mixon That's
where I thought he was going. But in Cincinnati, because
I know there's no bad blood with Cincinnati. All right,
to George Kittle off the board going bold. I am
(01:55:03):
actually gonna take Joe Mixon just for that consistent back
to back years of about total yards, a j green
back reliance of him. I think goes up in the
passing game this year. Dan, Okay, I feel like I've
gone chalk and have taken guys because they've fallen to me.
And I'm not gonna do that here. Sorry, Derrick Henry.
(01:55:23):
At number ten, I'm gonna take and another's question about workload.
But I'm gonna take Josh Jacobs of the Raiders. Like it, bold, bold,
and he'll be under a huge video board in the
Death Star. Uh. This is probably a reach, but um,
I think he's probably the best player in football. All right,
So I'm gonna take Patrick Mahomes here. There you go. Quarterbacks. Uh,
(01:55:46):
that that'll be part of our draft process, right Dan,
when we go through the quarterbacks front through twelve in
the points per game differential versus. But again, it's a
three man draft, so you know, take that for what
it's as you're rolling through. Uh. Look, I I don't
want to double up on the Saints. So Alvin Camaro
would have been the easy choice there. Uh Instead, since
(01:56:08):
he's telling him telling me how great he is. Uh No,
I'm actually gonna take the number one out in Tampa.
I'm gonna go with Chris Godwin. I debated, Julio Jones.
He's right, Met and Ryan doing a lot of talking
about his expectations. But you know what, Tom Brady could
do that and the points will be plentiful in Tampa.
Can't wait to actually get into uh full on fantasy discussion.
(01:56:30):
Surprised nobody took Derrick Henry and nobody took Davante Adams. Well,
I'm a Bears guy, Bears. I'm wearing a Jake Cutler
jersey for crying out loud as he goes after those
whoever's killing his chickens. Dan, it's a big deal. We'll
get maybe get into that next hour back with more
(01:56:50):
on the reboot of the NBA season and Jamal Adams
talk next year on Fox. Be sure to catch live
editions of The Jason's Myth Show with Mike Harmon weekdays
at ten pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific on Fox Sports
Radio and the I Heart Radio app. Greetings, Welcome in,
It is the slide over baby Our There you go,
(01:57:13):
record scratch now, you're swaying, got the cavassi a out?
Maybe another cup of coffee like me? Whatever it is
Friday night, however, you're celebrating getting to a Friday night
wherever you are. Thanks for being part of our extended
family here. Jason Smith is off tonight. That brings Dan
Buyer in with me, my tag team partner many years
(01:57:33):
on Sunday doing the fantasy football analysis and NFL previews.
You can get all of tonight's show on iTunes in
about an hour's time or Google Play, uh, download and
give it five stars. We would love you forever and ever,
no question about it. Uh. We talked a lot about
the reopening of sports. That really is amongst all of
(01:57:57):
the big topics the last month or two. Now we've
got positivity, right, divisiveness and battles on a number of fronts,
and big healthy arguments and discussions, right, I want to
call them more discussions, Yeah, those arguing sides and in
a lot of this, but when we're talking about mask
no mask, uh, and where we're at Black lives matter
(01:58:21):
and issues of race, where there's come uncomfortable conversations being had,
and you know what, that's the step. First step, right
is in your own house, maybe about something as innocuous
is who takes out the trash? Right, They're uncomfortable conversations,
but they've got to be had on a larger scale.
It's we're talking about systemic change and discussions of of
(01:58:47):
large s, but tonight it's about the restarting of sports
because we have concrete plans. Right we haven't seen the
giant blueprint from Major League Baseball yet, but we've been
told everything's been signed off on and we'll see a
schedule in short order. Last hour, we went through some
of the f a queues of different component parts to
(01:59:08):
what's going to be an unusual And I think that's
the part that everybody's just got to accept whatever you're doing,
whatever business you operate in. For us here in sports
talk radio, it's certainly been an odd couple of months,
you know what, no shortage of topics, no shortage of
discussion points. Uh, many things we leave on the cutting
room floor each night. Why because there's other things that
(01:59:31):
are weighty. And it's not about being preachy. It's not
about you know, showing off the sourus and and and
big words. No, it's it's about the commonality of our
experience and trying to talk to each other and learn
from each other. That's part of it, and sports talk
radio is part of it. Why Because sports has always
(01:59:51):
been that you've heard Jason and I talk about this
for years. If you've been with the show, is you're
just looking our history. A lot of it. Sports bridges
those arguments. Think about the uncomfortable things in your own family,
when there's an illness or unfortunately someone passed or whatever.
What's Eventually everybody get around talking about whatever the local
sports team is. They are. Our bullpen stinks. Yeah, our
(02:00:14):
quarterbacks stinks. Wait a minute, I'm from Chicago, so quarterback
play is always something. Uh. They were rated the worst
in the Super Bowl era, but or right at the
bottom either way. The point being that sports is what
breaks the ice and gets people talking and back together.
Likewise with society. You notice how much conversation It's not
(02:00:35):
just because we're working here in sports talk radio, but
a lot of it is how do we get sports back?
Knowing that it's it's like that nice bomb, right, you've
gone and you've spent too much time in the sun.
You need to go find yourself some aloe or something
else to to cool it down. Well, that's that's what
sports is, uh to a degree, for everybody with a
little bit of ancient anxiousness in society. You can go
(02:00:58):
and revel in the exploits of these superman or superwomen
on on the pitch, on the court, on the gridiron
or diamond as it were. Uh And yeah, obviously you
could bet too, So that's always a good thing, uh Dan.
And that that certainly can't be understated here as more
and more states look for revenue betting, so they're they're
(02:01:21):
gonna try to do everything they can to help get
teams back on fields. To sure. I mean, I mean
it brings an interest, you know, the the just the
ability to you know, to have a little have a
little something in it. And that's actually it's it's it's
amazing because you know, the sports betting has been around forever,
(02:01:43):
but for the casual person and the person that may
not understand it. The best way, the best way to
describe it as like do you have a fantasy football
team or do you have uh, you know, do you
do a bracket pool at your work? Because I mean
they're basically the same because you just basically cheering for yourself. Yeah,
you're cheering for the outcome, but you're cheering for yourself.
(02:02:05):
And when you open it up to more, you know,
two more ways, there's no there's no if hands or
butts about it. You can make anything exciting, you know,
you can. You can make anything exciting. Nowadays, it'll be
ten times as much, Mike, because we're just want anything.
I mean. And when you can place a wager on
golf in a you know, in a state right now
(02:02:27):
that allows it, or on a NASCAR race, Hey, it
brings in because it's going on. So yeah, there, there's
there's a lot of levels to you know, to whether
sports betting and how it's going to expand, on what
it's going to do for the league's but just even
right now in certain states, it brings you into something
when when you when you don't have anything, and who
would have thought we would have been in this place
(02:02:47):
where people would be betting, you know, wouldn't have games
to bet out in the NBA playoffs or whatnot. But yeah,
I mean it's I mean, it's we're heading that way. Yeah,
I mean, I think it will become ubiquitous, much like
more and more states started to take on you know,
quote riverboat gambling, right determining what's a riverboat and not
It may never actually leave the dock, but it technically
(02:03:09):
looks like a boat. So it's good exactly. Uh, and
you're and you roll through obviously more apps and more
money being pumped in there. There's always paramutual wagering for
those that want to go and bet the ponies. Uh,
that's always existed, and you can bet some European tracks
while you're at it. But all of it trying to
get at that that fixed right, that endorphin rush that
(02:03:31):
comes with a big finish to a game or to
a race or whatever it may be. And while some
of the events get pushed off long term, and I
know certainly here in California people were really upset Coachella
and Stagecoach getting bounced for the year. You know, that's
the big gathering place, and they just said, you know what,
(02:03:52):
we moved to October. Still not good enough, No, uh,
move on to one. And we've watched a lot of
concerts from home, uh, and different fundraisers. I watched the
Cool Thing benefiting New Orleans the other night, Dan that
ended with Paul McCartney playing a Louis Armstrong trumpet that
he'd procured with Dave Grohl and the private Preservation Hall
(02:04:15):
jazz band singing when the Saints go marching in and
you know what I wanted to see. I wanted to
see Michael Thomas out there catching balls like he had
well Velcrome miss That's what I wanted to see. Uh,
And soon enough we'll see that. The NBA. Tonight we
get the schedule. Yeah it's not games yet, but now
we can start putting dates to it. Right if you
want to go put your teams eight games into the
(02:04:38):
calendar as the the qualifiers or whatever, the last eight
before we get to the playoffs, you can go do
that and do so with with certainty that right now,
this is on my calendar. Right, you haven't been able
to put a lot of hey, return to work dates
or some of the other things, or your kid getting
out of the house to go to summer camp. Sorry
(02:04:59):
you're stuck. You don't have to do the home schooling,
but you got to get creative people. But you know,
with the NBA, we get we get the announcement of
the schedule, and that's a that's a huge push forward momentum.
And certainly where we are in Los Angeles Laker fans,
I mean the car flags were out Dan and I
was sitting in traffic for a long while. Today people
(02:05:20):
are back out on the roads. Uh, and they're showing
their colors. They they have reason to. You know, this
is one of the unique things about the resumption of
the schedule, and a lot has been brought up And
I thought Mike too at the beginning of this, at
the beginning of all of this, when we found out
likely they were gonna have to play in one centralized location,
in a bubble somewhere, I thought, man, it's really unfair
(02:05:42):
for teams like Milwaukee and the Lakers to not have
that home court advantage throughout the playoffs. But then you know,
and then you think about it, there's a lot of
different factors than I thought. Maybe just maybe it will
benefit the better teams because they're the better teams, meaning
they don't have to play three of the games on
(02:06:02):
a road court, allowing a team to get momentum. And
you say, well, that doesn't make any sense. But I
would just offer this, if one team is better than
the other and you played a best of seven on
a neutral court, then the better team would probably win.
You're just just putting it that, like if instead of
you know, taking out momentum, taking up fans, taking this
(02:06:24):
and that, you would just still think like, Okay, maybe
it's better. Maybe the the ability to to not allow
a team to get games three and four and then
go on the road and win a game five is
something that could help a Lakers team or could help
a Bucks team, because that's what happened to them last year.
They were up to oh in the Eastern Conference Finals,
lost a heartbreaker in Toronto, and then then get anything
(02:06:46):
the rest of the series. You know, the whole series
changed while it was in Toronto. Maybe that benefits Milwaukee
this time around because they're not gonna be going on
the road. They're just gonna be playing that other team
on a neutral court, and it is gonna be you know,
it is what it is, is the sayings as, but
that's what it's going to be for these teams. Yeah,
I love the potential of chaos theory here right summer going, oh,
we won't get a true finish to the season, Be
(02:07:08):
be thankful for getting anything at all. Right, I mean
they could have said, all right, we're gonna absorb our losses,
lick our wounds and wait for this to sort itself out. Well,
there's no guarantee that it happens quickly or efficiently at all.
And in the interim, you've got a lot of league
partners that you need to make happy and try to
(02:07:29):
to push through. Be at the NBA or the upcoming
NFL season. How the forty Niners announced that Man Escaped
is the Undercarriage Shaver Official Partner or whatever that title was.
I mean, you've got all sorts now exactly, all sorts
of craziness. Uh. You know, but you're trying to figure
out how to keep money's churning through, and as the players,
(02:07:53):
you certainly don't want to give up the hundreds of
millions of dollars that are out there, actually over a
billion dollars is when you get down to it for
their cut, because that then informs the next c b A,
the next round of contracts, and all of a sudden,
everybody's gonna make a little bit less. Right. You already
had some of the guys that, based on the way
things played out, I had to do some returns or
(02:08:16):
at least they've got some io us in the process. Uh.
And then go back to the issue with China and Darryl.
Darryl Morey's comments before the season, So you're already operating
with a four to five million dollar uh nut that
you had to make up when it was all said
and done. But you know, for the Pelicans, for the Grizzlies,
(02:08:38):
right to rising Stars and Zion and job John Morant
will get a little more of a look see for them.
And for Lebron James, here's your here's your big thrust, right,
can you finish the job? And everybody's got their qualifiers
and want to make the documentary. Oh congratulations all these
years ago, back in two thousand three. While we make
(02:08:58):
fun of the NHL for not having a number one
pick on the on the board, here are really any
any plans that they've divulged on this date in two
thousand three, Lebron James got drafted. Well, you know there's
some there's something that you said and and and not
to not to ignore the Lebron James, but there's something
you said about, you know, the Zion thing, and that
it's interesting because the theme you know that we've talked
(02:09:20):
about throughout the night, and I've talked about it before,
is I just I don't believe that the NBA should
have gone to twenty two teams. And one of the
reports was that they wanted to get Zion in and
you mentioned John Morant, and and to me, it's funny
because I know Zion Williamson is a once in a
generation sort of player where you have and the just
(02:09:44):
guys like like Zion don't come along very often, just
like guys like Lebron don't come around very often. You
know you've get you get those you get those drafts
once every ten years, once every fifteen years. There is
just a guy and he's going to be that guy
in a ends at being Zion. But I also think
that a lot of us realize how good job Morant
(02:10:05):
could be. And it's it's funny to me to see
the NBA be willing to say we're gonna allow eight
seeding games so Zion gets some run while taking away
an opportunity from John Moranton his Grizzlies team to make
a name for themselves against Lebron and the Lakers, Like
(02:10:27):
you're putting that at risk because Memphis realistically is not
gonna catch Dallas for the seventh spot, so they're gonna
be in the eighth spot, but you're gonna allow them
the possibility to lose it to any of the other
teams of Portland's New Orleans San Antonio, Phoenix, any of
those teams that are on the outside looking in. So
it's funny to me that what's good for Zion or
(02:10:49):
what is good for the NBA allows Zion to come in,
and it can be detrimental to someone like John Morant,
who I think is developing into a star of his
own right in the NBA. Yeah, he had a as
a tastic season. Right now, if you're voting for Rookie
of the Year, he's gotta be your guy, right. I mean,
design while impact is certainly not to be denied, didn't
(02:11:10):
play enough games at least from more Ice, No, I
don't think, right. So you've got them, You've got a
really robust rookie class. There's some guys, you know, not
in the playoffs that will have impact going forward. But
you know, it's it's a pretty solid group that's coming in.
And we're talking about what's one of the final years
(02:11:30):
of Lebron James, Like the storylines were all written. It's
it's a beautiful champistry for Adam Silver's league, which is
why you need to make it happen. And however it happens,
you know, and and no, no disrespect to the Memphis
Grizzlies because they've been disrespected pretty much the entire season.
Even my guys, you didn't want to play with them. Yes,
the point being is that the NBA is disrespecting them
(02:11:52):
in a way of being like, Okay, we'd rather have
Zion play eight games that may not mean anything than
to give John Moranth and his crew the ability to
knock off the Acres like then, you know, and it
just doesn't allow that to happen, and then allow John
Morant and his Grizzly teammates to all of us and
become a brand in the NBA that you can market
like there's there's nothing wrong with that. The the middle
(02:12:14):
of the NBA is so disregarded because teams want to
tank and get the first pick, and all we care
about what's happening at the top. This would have been
a perfect opportunity for the NBA to actually give a
crap about the eighth seed of the seventh seed and
make these teams you don't want to be something, just
like the Clippers had to fight for themselves last year
to get the eighth spot, and the NBA just like
(02:12:34):
we'd rather have Zion play eight games that may end
up being meaningless and instead of letting the Grizzlies do
that thing, I think that's absurd. Grizzlies, Uh, if you'd
have played out the rest of the season, If I'm
not mistaken, they had the hardest remaining schedule in these
eight games. If you played out the the full eight teen,
I didn't see the strength of schedule. Hey, the three lead,
(02:12:55):
you know, let him play it out. Finished, finished the
finished the job. And then if we get that with
Lebron and Anthony days, which would be great. By the way.
One other thing that was is funny, was you think
of all this, there were there were teams that had
on their schedule, you know, teams that were gonna tank.
You know because you and I have talked about that
for years. Yeah, that the teams that are just done
(02:13:17):
and and so now you have a situation where everybody's
got some skin in the game in this So there
are no easy games. You think ESPN put a graphic up.
I don't know if it was like the Sixers, like
the Sixers are like maybe the second easiest schedule. I
can't remember. The point being is the winning percentage was,
you know, five oh two. So that tells you like
(02:13:37):
like the worst schedules. Everybody's good that's playing in or
Land or most everybody is good. Sorry Wizards. But the
point being is is is there are really no easy
games in these eight games. And usually you would maybe
get an opportunity to the face, you know, a Warrior's
team that wasn't you know, playing for anything because everybody
was injured, or next team you maybe had two against
(02:13:58):
the Knicks that could have that you won't have the
opportunity to play. They're gonna mis those opportunities. It's too
bad because any more opportunity to mock the Knicks or
the Bulls or any of those teams is always a
welcome thing on our show, Dan uh And and I
know you love it too, especially while you've got Janice
and Tenda Coompo running around as everybody's starting to uh
put him and Trey Young in the Lakers uniforms wherever
(02:14:22):
they can in murals. Now that Trey Young signing with
Clutch Sports, chaos ensues and just trying to steal him
from you. And we could we we could have found out.
You know, July one would have been the day that
Janice could have accepted his new deal from the Bucks,
but if he was under normal circumstances, Dan, let me
(02:14:43):
ask you this question. Let's put you on the spot
and then we'll pause here for the cause. Uh just
uh and either or for you? Is it better for
Johannis to win for his long term stay in Milwaukee
or to lose? Interesting? It's an interesting point. I think
that if if I had to pick one and I
have to give you an answer losing, I think that
(02:15:06):
he would feel the responsibility of bringing a championship. That's
what I think. I think it's because just like just
like Lebron, he was able to leave the second time
because he brought Cleveland the title the second time. There
you have, if nothing else, He's bringing the dad jokes
in a big way on social media. He's Dann Buyer
(02:15:27):
and for Jason Smith at Dann Buyer on Foxes where
you find and find me over at Swollenome on Mike Carmen,
thanks for hanging out with us as we come to
you from the Geico Studios. Fifteen minutes. You could take
or more on your car insurance with geicos to go
to Geico dot com get yourself a free rate quote.
Coming up next, we're gonna go out to the Bay
Area well in in theory because well, the Giants would
(02:15:47):
like you to watch their games kinda. We'll talk about

fun with you, appreciate you being part of our extended
family here as we get into another weekend, deep into
(02:16:29):
the slide Over Baby Hour here on Fox Sports Radio. Uh,
Dan Buyer and I um, it's good to be have
Dan back in the mix. I haven't seen Dan in
a while. He's got a nice haircut, nice tight cut,
looking good for the crew. Here, we got Bo, we
got Nick in the back and of course Alex Tyshert
on the ones and twos. Uh, it's good to see
(02:16:51):
everybody that sense of normalcy broadcasting from our respective homes.
While effective for mass communicating, there's something about you know,
the nod uh and being able to look at Ty
Shirt and you know, give him a stern look when
he screws something up that you can't do down the line, Dan,
(02:17:12):
I mean you just can't. No, you can't, I can't
do it. I don't know how many people can relate to,
you know, doing that sort of you know work. But
it's good. You know, we're all in different rooms here well,
but also, I mean even even most most jobs right now,
I mean maybe you've got a lot of conference calls
per day. I mean you're getting that FaceTime and now
they're seeing the skull that they used to when you
(02:17:34):
only just had the telephone. Hey, my life hasn't changed
much since March. I think I've seen I see thy
Shirt five days a week, so yeah, well there you go. Yeah,
I see I commended. I see him maybe every other
week and sounds so happy that I see that miserable
blah blah blah. But there's for for us here at
(02:17:54):
Fox Sports Radio, and I don't know if it's the
same as other essential places, but there is a difference
between people who have been here since March and the
people that haven't. Alex Is that fair? Is that? I
mean pans down? Yeah? Like absolutely, Like the there's there's
something that's very unique about all of this because I
(02:18:15):
hear a lot of people who are working from home
who are just basically stuck at home, and Mike to
your point of saying, like, yeah, it's nice to get
out because gosh, you can't you know, like of being
home so long. What was unique in my situation? And
I don't know if alex Is feels the same way,
but half of my day was normal coming to work.
(02:18:36):
It was then the second part of the day that
wasn't normal, which was so unique because it was it
was such a change, like you weren't living the same
twenty four hours. You were basically living two different twelve
hour things. One thing was normal and then one was
just completely different because when you came home you couldn't
do anything. That's unique. Yeah, I mean, look, the day
to day, it hasn't really changed. And the girls were
(02:18:58):
home from school and I think they both got tired
of seeing me, but they all got fresh cook meals
right here you go. You got your three squares from
the old man, he walked the dog, and then you
got to go and frolic as you were. Uh. And
now that the summer is upon us in schools paused,
even though they'd both like to just continue. It's like,
all right, since we can't really go anywhere and travel,
(02:19:19):
can we just keep going to school? And I like this,
give me some assignments, grade me and let's just keep
the line moving like kids after my own heart. Uh, Dan,
It's kind of the way I would look at it,
going all right, what's the best scenario here, I could
finish my schooling a little bit faster. Let's go, man.
I I don't know how you did it with the
girls and you know, getting but you know, tip of
(02:19:41):
the cap here, it's another it's a whole other dynamic
that you know that I don't understand of just getting
school ready. Well you you know, Dan, as we were
talking about it, I mean, there's just so many and
I think it's part of the larger conversation right when
we've had over the last month or so U more
discussions about race and systems and and how everything is
(02:20:04):
set up in this country, the monuments and all of
those debates. But it's it's something I've been trying to
bang the drum on forever, and and maybe it's was
an echo chamber and maybe it's not anymore. It's just
how different different parts of the country are, right. You
were telling me about that conversation with that with our
(02:20:26):
colleague Chris Plank, who's in Oklahoma, right, and and that
it's just different in terms of how businesses of operating operated.
Family back home in Wisconsin a little, you know, a
little different there they you know, they had to seem
to have things more maybe a little more strict than
than other places. But yeah, I mean it's different for everywhere,
(02:20:46):
you know, everywhere there is. The toughest part is is
you can't really get a sense of what it's like
anywhere else because no one could go anywhere to get
anything else, right, So you have to trust whatever your
local news is. And that one neighbor who decided he
was going to take his little camera and give you
the bird's eye view, and then since you don't like
your neighbor, you dismiss what he had to say. I'm
(02:21:06):
just kidding again. How about we paused before talking about
the San Francisco Giants. Be sure to catch live editions
of The Jason Smith Show with Mike harmon weekdays at
ten pm Eastern seven pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
and the I Heart Radio app. Hey, one major league
baseball team trying to get creative, much like in the Bundesliga,
(02:21:27):
and we're seeing Premier League and and others. The Giants
are offering season ticket holders, uh, the opportunity to purchase
a cut out of themselves for bucks cardboard. Well, the
season ticket holders get them, but if you're a non
season ticket holder and you buy the mini packs or
one game off, you can buy one for bucks. Would
(02:21:48):
you put up for your face to be in the
stands and on TV? Dan Um, I think it's a
great idea, But when I saw the Premier League do
that with the mac is, it just told me how
difficult it is would be to actually see yourself. So
I would consider that I would file that under money
not well spent. Okay, well, because I've got ideas of
(02:22:11):
how how you can fix this now? And in the
German Ly what was interesting they had all the fans uh,
and then they had cardboard cutouts of some of the administrators,
and they made them look like giants. It was like,
here's you know, the half giant like Hagrid in the
Harry Potter films, uh, standing next to the you know,
regular fans. But what if you're in Silicon Valley, you
could do something where you can can put a microphone
(02:22:34):
into the cardboard cutout so you can boo and scream
from your home computer. That's that's technology that they probably
developed there to allow them to do that. About that,
if we could get that mixed it would that be
worth to you so you can curse out the guys
you hated. Again, it's baseball we're talking about. Could be
it could be a tough sell. If I could do
(02:22:56):
that in Seattle at a Seahawks game for you while
you were wearing a Steve Large jersey, you could be Dave,
you can John L. Williams whoever you need road jersey
by the way, much better because I don't know if
Royal Blue doesn't you know, does me too well? But
the white road jerseys I left back in the day.
(02:23:16):
That could be a different option. That could be that
maybe you could sell me on all right, we can
play with that, all right? And really quickly to turn
to the NFL for a minute or two, Adam Gaze
spoke out about all this Jamal Adam stuff and saying, hey,
I want him here. That's well, he's your best player.
Of course you're gonna say you want him here, but
the reality is you've got And we talked about it
(02:23:37):
with Jason Cole a couple of hours ago. You know,
you had the eight teams that came up, all winning teams, right,
and the Buccaneers, who you're assuming are winning or at
least competitive with Tom Brady, so basically saying to the
Jets and I want to win or just pay me
a lot of money. Yeah. Yeah, it's a nice way
to cut to the chase, right. Yeah, that's you know,
(02:24:00):
the list was was funny to me anyway of just stuff.
I mean, you know, I only want to go to
the Super Bowl contenders with great quarterbacks there, you know,
great situations. It was pretty funny, But I mean, what
is you know what is Adam Gate is gonna say?
You know, he's got to play the game knowing that
the the seat is is starting to heat up under him, Yeah,
and and also knowing that it's if Jamal Adams isn't
(02:24:23):
dealt Uh, it's not going to be just a one
year thing. It's gonna be a two year you know.
I mean like so there's yeah, what what what is
he supposed to say? Yeah, it's it's time to tap
dance a little bit. Your main main goal here is
you've got to make sure Sam Donald is ready for
prime time and to do so, and remember, he's also
(02:24:43):
got to keep Levian Bell happy. That's the other part
that's getting lost in this is Jamal had him is
getting all the headlines and you still have to deal with,
all right, the touches of Levian Bell. Not to mention
you really don't have a number one receiver. Yeah, Robby
Anderson leaves, he goes to Caroline. But you look at
the guys that are there. I mean they're they're all
guys that are are good targets, steady targets, but not
(02:25:06):
game breakers. No, and there's there's the Jets, Yeah, Paraman
the uh you know, maybe there's a resurgence, Yeah, you know,
roll the dice there on his third team. But yeah,
I mean it's the curiosity as we roll forward, no
question about hey, maybe they'll just run the ball. Well,
(02:25:26):
you know, with Levan Bell and Frank Gore and that'll
just be how the that's the new Jets way celebrate
Frank Gore. He's a treasure while we have him, guy
who's played for a hundred years and just keeps going right.
I mean, what is he number four now on the
on the all time list? He's four three? Yeah, yeah,
I mean it's pretty scary and he's a Jet uh something.
(02:25:48):
I never thought i'd see that he'd still be hanging
around here all these years later. Go back and find
those rookie cards from twenty years ago.
