Rob and Kelvin debate whether the Oklahoma City Thunder are set to dominate the NBA for the foreseeable future, explain why they had a problem with Anthony Edwards being so passive in Game 4, and argue whether the San Antonio Spurs would be better off trying to trade for Kevin Durant or Giannis Antetokounmpo this summer.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
You're listening to the Best of the Odd Couple.

Speaker 3 (00:28):
Throughout this season, we've been watching how good and Rob
g gave us a bunch of numbers. The point differential
at an all time high for the Thunder, we're talking
about one of the best defenses in modern era. This
team has just been great, the way they they blow
everybody out. They have a literal MVP and the current
MVP and SGA. They got defensive Player of the Year

(00:49):
caliber players on this team. And the good thing for
them to rop I'm starting to look at man, they
kind of embody to me what we're starting to become.
More so, how you win in the modern NBA. You know,
we had you go through eras, right, and then we
had the Big Three, or at least trying to have
a Big three era. And now to me, I looked

(01:09):
at years ago, I was looking at Boston as one
of those examples like, Okay, you get a guy, you
get another guy, you start to draft around. Then obviously
you can you can make a play here there, make
a trade here there, sign a free agent, but you
start and have your core. The Warriors really started this
too when you drafted Steph, you drafted Clay, you drafted Harrison, Barnes,
you drafted Draymond, and you had such a great nucleus

(01:32):
that could grow together pumps and bruises and start to
find something.

Speaker 4 (01:36):
And be young.

Speaker 3 (01:37):
And then obviously you can be on your way to
at least competing year in year out and having that
team that you can depend on. And I think the
thunder are setting themselves up rob to be in a
really good place when you look at first and foremost
having the first guy, right you got to have the guy.
And they have Sga who is doing stuff at historic
rates right now. Him and Alan Iverson and Michael Jordan

(01:59):
being the only guy a score to have ten plus
games of thirty points in the playoff run already and
he look at him, he's twenty six years old. You
got your other young guys in check and Jalen twenty
four and twenty three years old. And then you got
a bunch of ancillary guys who you are very young.
We know the average age of this is like twenty
four and like eight months this whole team, and you

(02:21):
got ancillary guys you can continue to build around or
are nice pieces. If you say, I got check, Jalen
and SGA, this is where we're going. We're not moving here.
They've got great pieces they can piece together and trade
also draft picks to bundle up and go get another veteran,
Go get another shooter, Go get another defender.

Speaker 4 (02:38):
If they need.

Speaker 3 (02:39):
They all play defense as well, starting with SGA. So
assess the tone of our best player competes. Our best
player is unselfish. Our best player is for the team,
and he plays defense, and he's on a relatively friendly
deal considering how great he is. Next year he's only
gonna be making thirty eight million, the year after that
only forty million, which we know how much that it

(03:00):
really isn't for an MVP guy for the next couple
of years. So I think they've put themselves in position
to really kind of be the team, specifically in the West,
but one of the teams to say, hey, you gotta
deal with us for the next let's call it three
to six years where if they win this year, they
can be compete again next year they have a good
run where maybe they go to three finals in five

(03:22):
six years. They can be that team and kind of
be the model of how they did it right. And
credit Sam Presty because he's had a variation of in
iterations of this Oklahoma City thunder from the KD Westbrook
and James Harden model to the Okay, everybody's gone, but
be as long as we have Westbrook, he'll be our guy,
a franchise guy to the Okay, he needs help. Go
get Paul George and Chris Paul and all of that.

(03:43):
To now, I think they got their young core that
they can say is like a Boston is like an
older that old KD Stephan Clay Warriors team and start
to build around And I think that's starting to become
what we're seeing in the NBA is you get your
two three guys out the draft, build around it, and
hope you got some for the next five six years.
Houston Detroit being examples of teams that are coming up

(04:04):
like that.

Speaker 4 (04:05):
Yeah, I disagree.

Speaker 1 (04:06):
I think this is a one off for the Okac Thunder,
and I do, I really do, because of their history,
because of the history, actually know the history of the
league on where we're going, where there's all these different teams.
We would have said that about the Celtics. One injury
changed the whole trajectory of the Celtics, correct.

Speaker 4 (04:23):
Yeah, but I'm there right, No, But I'm.

Speaker 1 (04:25):
Just saying, but it changed that even coming back from injury,
you don't look at them as a favorite, like, oh,
they're gonna win for sure. When Giannis won, Oh, they're
all set up. They got Middleton, they got this, they
got these people. Okay, so then they didn't win. Okay, No,
but I thought after Jihannis won one, you figured that
they have another run in them or another chance. Denver
won to one. Oh okay, but they didn't hold their

(04:47):
pieces together.

Speaker 3 (04:48):
But those teams remind me rob of the Laker team
where Okay, we got the guys, but then we got
rid of everybody.

Speaker 1 (04:54):
No, but I'm but I'm trying to say is that
things can change. I don't think that's where we are
in the NBA. Think that their teams can flip real quickly,
like Denver where they are and now they go out
and decide to spend money and get a star player
or make you know what I mean, make a deal
that would change where Denver is. You got another year

(05:14):
of Lebron and Luca. Are they gonna finally put something
to do set?

Speaker 4 (05:18):
I don't.

Speaker 1 (05:19):
I don't, but I'm just saying, can they go and
put something together? The Warriors they roll the dice with
Jimmy Butler. If they're gonna keep going to the second
apron and paying all of this money they keep paying,
are they going to do it one more time?

Speaker 4 (05:33):
Our stephan is still playing.

Speaker 1 (05:34):
I'm just saying it's not a clear path or the
idea that because okay, she still hasn't even won anything yet.
Before we crown them and say that they're going to
be running for the next four or five years, because
on paper, I hear.

Speaker 4 (05:46):
What you're saying. By the youth. What happens if they lose?

Speaker 1 (05:50):
What happens if Sga gets an injury or one of
these other pieces. Chet Holmgreen we already know he's been
hurt in his career, or something else happens. And I'm
not wishing it to on everybody. I just think it's hard.
First they got to win the first one before I'm
even going to buy into the idea that they set up.

Speaker 4 (06:07):
And here's the other one.

Speaker 1 (06:08):
When OKC with Duran and Harden and Westbrook, they went
to a championship, never got back again, and then the
team got dismantled or whatever it was. So it looked
very promising at that time. They were pops at that time,
and Lebron and them beat them because they won game one,
okay see, and then if you remember, they lost Game

(06:30):
two at the end on a file that should have
been called against Lebron or to put them too up,
and they lost that game and never won another game.
Uh So those things are there, So I hear your
point on looking at it, but I'm not so sure
that that's a guarantee.

Speaker 4 (06:44):
Plus, we don't see teams repeating in the NBA.

Speaker 3 (06:47):
And the and that's why I think this team has
a chance to be back to like I brought the Warriors.

Speaker 4 (06:55):
Four or five champions.

Speaker 1 (06:56):
But even the Warriors didn't they got they choked down
that they three wins or choke down the three to
one lead, and then if they didn't get Kevin Durant,
I don't believe they would have won those and that's
a couple and that I really don't a couple points.

Speaker 4 (07:12):
I want it real quick.

Speaker 3 (07:13):
So when you talk about them having that's you just
met about the Warriors. That's the good thing about to
me them having these pieces so that they have really
good pieces around this team, young pieces that are that
other teams may covet that they can say, as long
as we keep him him him, we're good and we
can make some moves to even get better. Maybe we
need a veteran player. Let's go get a veteran player.

(07:33):
I think they're built for that. And another difference with
that OLKC team, uh OKC team with KD. West and Harden,
I think all of those guys, as we would eventually see,
are all time Hall of Fame great MVPs guys. I
don't think Jaylen, Williams or Chet are that. I think
they're the perfect pieces to be a part of a team,
to know exactly their role. Hard and New I'm an alpha,

(07:56):
I'm a top seven to five player at the time.
The minute I get my own team, Westbrook knew if
I had my own team, I'd be MVP. Kad knew
if I had my own team I'd be MVP. This
team ain't that, and I think that's what work in
their favor that they buy in. That's why they've got
this whole university style. I can't even interview this gerry
without the whole team being there. Everybody's got to be
in the shot. Whereas Katie, Russ and Hard I always

(08:18):
felt like they were like, boy, if I had my
own team, I'll be getting busy, and they all did
and they were all right, but it kind of costs
that none of them could win until obviously KD would
go on to be the Warriors. So this team's a
little different to me. I think Jalen knows he's not
alpha guy like that.

Speaker 1 (08:33):
Yeah, but you don't know that because at some point
somebody's telling you, dude, you could be doing even more
of this. Why you being a batman when you can
go somewhere. I'm just saying, and then that's where the
equal comes. Friends get in your ear, like you always say,
this is why Diana Ross and the Supremes broke up,
or why Yoko Ono broke up the Beatles. I'm just saying,

(08:55):
like you would look and go, you're the Beatles. Where
are you going? Why would you want to go on.

Speaker 4 (09:00):
To what you don't want to give me? Destny child?
And I just say you give me something.

Speaker 1 (09:04):
I'm just saying, I'm going with the iconic breakups. I'm sorry,
Destiny Child, you don't do desty shout like that. Beyonce
is not iconic. No, not not with sep.

Speaker 3 (09:14):
When people get a little fresh haircut and lose a
little weight, they start acting different.

Speaker 4 (09:17):
Not are you acting living in two different Americas?

Speaker 1 (09:20):
No, what I'm talking about that you'll go on on
the Beatles. That's the number about half our listeners. Dan,
I'm saying something.

Speaker 3 (09:27):
They think you're playing me and you playing at the
Memorial Day barbecue. Yo, go on, all right, yeah, they
don't know you over here right now, boy, I'll tell
you wait till we come back to Garry. Read this
so I can come back to you about you get
a little haircut, lose a little wait, start acting different
out here and.

Speaker 4 (09:40):
Get the beer? Right? No, we go see Hey, Rob
g noticed it right away. Rob gaid my skin is
baby soft? Right, Okay, all right here we go.

Speaker 2 (09:48):

Speaker 1 (10:00):
Let's play the sound first and then we'll be able,
he had to say, and then just his response, I
don't look at.

Speaker 4 (10:05):
It like I struggled or he struggled. They just.

Speaker 5 (10:09):
They had a good game plan making us get off
the ball. Especially for me, man, it was super into gaps.
I made the right play all night, so I don't
really look at it like I struggled. I didn't get
enough shots to say I struggled, So that's that might
be how you guys look at it, But yeah, I
can't struggle.

Speaker 4 (10:23):
Oh, it just I made the right one.

Speaker 1 (10:24):
You have you not getting shots, are struggling, struggling to
get open, struggling to figure out what they're doing to
you and adjust to it. I'm sorry, that's a great
game plan. You shoot one for two in the first half.
I'll take that all day. Whoever was the defensive guy
who set it up for the thunder, give him a raise.

Speaker 4 (10:46):
Are you got a man took two shots once?

Speaker 1 (10:50):
You can't ever, ever, ever, ever think that that's a
good thing, and then you'll wind up losing by two points.

Speaker 4 (10:57):
Do you know what I mean, like, like think about that.

Speaker 1 (11:00):
Maybe if you made three baskets more in the first half.
I just struggling. Doesn't mean you have a lot of
shots and you miss shots. You're not a part of
the offense. They want you to give the ball off.
That's that's not it.

Speaker 4 (11:15):
We talk about it.

Speaker 1 (11:16):
If you notice in basketball, Calvin, there's guys who are
open on the court. They're open for a reason. Oh
I'm open. Yeah, we know you're you're open.

Speaker 4 (11:27):
Somebody gonna be open. It's you, right because they don't.

Speaker 1 (11:30):
Think you can make the shot. Yeah, you're gonna be
open until you start making shots. I'm not gonna guard you.
If they look at you and your jumpers off, I'm
not what are we guarding them for.

Speaker 3 (11:39):
This is his last go round to me, and I
appreciate his honesty over the year. He's been very honest
about defense. Oh man, they kind of confused me. They
threw this at me. Oil man, you should I have
never seen that before. This is the last time, young
man An Edwards that I want to hear something about
that where defenses are confusing him or I'm just well,
I didn't want to shoot. I'm kind of taking the
bet at a certain point. I'll give you a quarter,

(12:02):
I'll give you two, but I need the adjustments. I
need you to be able to say, oh man, I
saw they were doing their a triple team and or
all man. They had a man four man in a
box and they had oh man, I've seen that every
time they were blitzing me on the screens.

Speaker 4 (12:12):
I need him to be aware of.

Speaker 3 (12:14):
That because all the good to greats had to deal
with it. Harden and he was an MVP for or
candidate for about a six seven year run KD. He
got every look. Steph gets a million different defenses, Lebron, Kobe,
all these greats, Michael Jordan, they know how to adjust.

Speaker 4 (12:30):
All right. Maybe you threw something at me.

Speaker 3 (12:31):
For that first quarter, quarter and a half of its
kind of a little off ol cast see what you're doing.
And then they're able to adjust. And Aunt is now
and that this is it for me?

Speaker 4 (12:39):
All right?

Speaker 3 (12:39):
Aunt, you're still young, was he twenty four? I give
you at this is it now. I'm gonna need you
to start being to adjust a little faster. There's no
way you being the star player. The second star player
can have a total of twenty shots.

Speaker 4 (12:52):
In the game.

Speaker 3 (12:52):
That you lose by two, not a game where we
got blue out so we didn't.

Speaker 4 (12:57):
Even play it in the second half.

Speaker 3 (12:58):
You and Julius rand and I have twenty combined free
field goal attempts.

Speaker 4 (13:02):
That's as nine.

Speaker 3 (13:03):
That is crazy and that is not a winning formula,
even though their bench came to play and kept them
in that game. Now, I grit what he's saying. Sometimes
the bench guy's hot or another player's hot, and you kind,
all right, let's feedo. You don't want to force things.
But the whole point is to have the bitch guy hot. Okay, cool,
so that you close this thing on home and you
take us on home. Man, man, it was cool. Now

(13:24):
you bring us home and get to win. And that's
what you were expecting to happen there where you had
Alexander Walker keeping them in it, Dimon Chinzo keeping them
in it. Don't laugh how I said that, Robbzi. Okay, Dimoncenzo,
I said that right there. I say it right that time.
That's what I say.

Speaker 4 (13:41):
Sound like a bad Italian restaurant? What was that?

Speaker 3 (13:44):
Don't ever disrespect my Michelin stars and my restaurants. Okay, uh,
you got those guys hot you can't waste a game
like that. We know role players play better at home,
so you cannot waste a game like that for your
role players. Now that you're getting ready to go back
on the road. That's a big time loss that they
needed to win in order to keep this thing afloat,
because to me, it's it's a rap.

Speaker 4 (14:02):
I picked the thunder anyway, but it's a rap.

Speaker 6 (14:15):
So, as Rob alluded to, all signs point to a
divorce happening this soft season between Kevin Durant and the
Phoenix Suns. Anyone you speak to as reputable as All said,
if he's not traded, that would be the shock of
the summer. Well flash forward to Tuesday morning ESPM. Shan
Sharania went on the Pat McAfee Show and he said
that Kevin Durant and the San Antonio Spurs had mutual

(14:40):
interest ahead of this past trade deadline. Nothing obviously materialized,
but expect the two sides to reconvene this offseason. Guys,
the reason why that's interested is number one, because it's
you know, anytime you have Katie on the move, it's
a big deal. But number two sudden we talked about
a couple of weeks ago. As soon as the Spurs
got the number two pick in the upcome NBA Draft,

(15:01):
everybody and their mother started to link San Antonio that
number two pick and Yannis because we all know that
his future in Milwaukee is also up in the air.
So here's the question, guys, if you are the San
Antonio Spurs and you can go after either one of
these big fish KD or Yannis, which one are you

(15:25):
going after?

Speaker 1 (15:26):
And why I'm gonna go after KD Because I like
a bargain, So it would be like shopping at Ross.

Speaker 4 (15:33):
I'm gonna get it forty percent off.

Speaker 1 (15:36):
He's well traveled, a little weathered, you know what I mean.
Maybe there's a little stain on it, maybe it's a
little older, outdated. It's not the freshest stuff, but it's
worth it. I'm not shopping at Sacks. Jannis is a
Sacks purchase. He's still good, great, he's still young, He's

(15:58):
got years to go. K D is at the end,
and it's not gonna cost you all your players. That's
the problem. If you go get Yanni's and you gotta
give up. Right, you just built this young team together
and now the first thing you have to do is
what start taking away from it.

Speaker 4 (16:18):
That's not what you want to do. You want to
be able to take your nucleus what.

Speaker 1 (16:22):
You have, add a player Kevin Durant this year for
the next two years somebody else.

Speaker 4 (16:27):
Down there, you know what I mean.

Speaker 1 (16:28):
And it ain't gonna cost you that much, and it
ain't gonna cost you that many players because you don't
want to do that. That's the part you don't want
to do. If you have to cut your team to
get Yannis, what's the point of that.

Speaker 3 (16:42):
Totally get your point, except you're wrong. First of all,
don't do Kevin Durant like that.

Speaker 4 (16:47):
He ain't Ross now. He might be a Macy's.

Speaker 1 (16:50):
Nah, he was when he was in Brooklyn.

Speaker 3 (16:54):
Now I give you know he might be if you
catch a good deal over at H and M.

Speaker 4 (16:58):
He ain't Ross. I'll give you H and M. He's
him right now. He is him.

Speaker 3 (17:03):
He ain't th Oose school him when he was, you know,
winning championships with the Warriors. But I'm going I'm definitely
going to sax with you from New York. I'm going
to Madison Ave. Ain't that where everything is in New York.
I'm shopping on Madison Ave right now. And I tell
you why. One of the things the Spurs have done
well is accumulate some young talent and also accumulate picks.

Speaker 4 (17:24):
Let's go with the latter.

Speaker 3 (17:25):
Dang, they got a lot of picks, thirty six future
draft picks over the next seven years. They have the
most selections in the league, even more than Okac. So
when you have all of those picks, and you also
have obviously a Rookie of the Year and Stephen Castle
Stefan Castle. So now you have some talent, you got

(17:46):
some picks, and I'm going to get Goddess. And the
thing I think we forget about Gyan is is he
seems older than he really is. Like, well, because you've
heard of him for so long, Giannis is only thirty.
So if I get five more years of Yanna's paired
up with women. Yeah, but first of all, let's talk
about the amount of footage and that we can that
we can cover. You got a dude that's seven foot

(18:07):
a million and a dude that has a wingspan of
about eight foot with Giannis, so defensively, we're going to
be incredible. You got two guys that can defend, that
can block shots, change shots, that can make shots. Then
I got de Aaron Fox, who can actually close games,
and that's been one of the issues with Gianni's. Aaron
Fox is a perfect guy close game, make make shots,
make free throws. And obviously he's not the greatest defender,

(18:29):
so I can cover that with other people.

Speaker 4 (18:31):
So I'm going to sacks fith.

Speaker 3 (18:33):
I'm going to what do you want you want to
call it Bloomingdale, Demen, Marcus, whatever you want to call
these places. And I'm going to get Giannis and I'm
about to have Giannis and win beating Darren d Aaron
Fox for the next five six years and tell y'all
to deal.

Speaker 1 (18:44):
With Well, okay, so that Milwaukee's getting what what?

Speaker 3 (18:47):
What is Milwaukee giving you the rookie of the year
in Castle and I'm giving you five first round picks
or whatever?

Speaker 4 (18:55):
You maybe another player. I need somebody else. I need Fox.
Give your giving me fun, giv.

Speaker 3 (19:01):
Me far why because I got I want fun? No,
I need fun because then I'm sitting there with two
I will give you.

Speaker 4 (19:11):
You can start over. You can sell to your team.

Speaker 3 (19:14):
We got a rookie of the year, we got a
bunch of picks, and uh, we're gonna start here.

Speaker 4 (19:19):
We're gonna rebuild and you can build it.

Speaker 3 (19:20):
Hey, you still got Dame when he comes back late
next year, you know, and then you start building from there,
and you and you reset and you say, we're on
our way to be in with the Celtics are what
they're you know, they had a good run drafting young guys.
We're on our way to being with the Warriors when
they drafted a bunch. But look, getting base that, but
getting k D isn't gonna cost you the Rookie of

(19:42):
the year, okay, or number two pick. It might have
even cost you the fourteenth pick that they have. Seriously,
k D at this point it cannot command that. That's
why I'm saying k D could fit. He could still
get your buckets.

Speaker 1 (19:57):
Go look at his numbers, like you remember at one
point to start the year he was bawling out. Remember
that twenty six again, still score And if you add
KD right to Wemby fox Castle and still have a
ton of assets left, Like why.

Speaker 4 (20:16):
Why deplete the bank?

Speaker 1 (20:17):
KD can do what Yanni's Wimby's your star, not Yannis.

Speaker 3 (20:23):
No, that's who is my future. No, that's just j
honest right now, he's nine foot tall. Yanna's stats were
insane this past year.

Speaker 4 (20:31):
Thirty like to get him that plus two ninety got
him on the New York City.

Speaker 3 (20:36):
Suburber and that yes ninety you finally said you give
me too sixty five or two seventy five? Uh yeah,
Yannis Winby Indian Fox is a pro blump and canissue
with the issue with KD is Number one, he hasn't
played over sixty five games in a very long time.
Number two, it just hasn't ultimately mattered. In fact, it has.

(20:57):
It not only mattered. The team's got on, The Suns
got worse. The Sons were laughable by far, the most
disappointing team in all of the NBA this past season.

Speaker 4 (21:08):
So to me, I'd rather not.

Speaker 3 (21:11):
And then because he's not the leader enough, he's not
gonna come in and lead enough my Fox and my Wimby.
Giannis is a leader. Giannice is gonna play hard, Giannice
is gonna play a both ends of the ball. Giannic
is gonna demand them to be better, and I'd rather
ride with that for the next five or six years.
And defensively we would be incredible with the Giannis and Wimby.

Speaker 1 (21:28):
Yeah, but Gianna's thought, it's a lot more. And that's
just the issue. Is what I'm trying to tell you
is that you could probably get very much for what

That was the question Hope Woodard asked herself after a string of situationships inspired her to take a break from sex and dating.
