It's the Best of the Odd Couple with Chris Broussard and Rob Parker! Chris and Rob explain why they blame the Warriors organization for putting Kevin Durant on the floor before he was ready, and debate whether or not the Knicks should be willing to give Durant a max contract offer this summer coming off an Achilles injury. Plus, the guys get into a heated discussion about whether or not the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team were being 'poor sports' when they ran up the score in their World Cup match against Thailand.

(00:21):
s R. You're listening to the Best of the Odd
Couple with Chris Brush and Rod Harker. Yeah, let's start
with the Kevin Durant. We watched it in horror because
we alway knew there was a chance to get in
the air when it happened where we thought we were
over there and I'm still in the air. It happened

(00:41):
three minutes into the second quarter before we even got
over there. That's why we were watching him. We couldn't
believe it. But it was heart wrenching. I mean it
really was, because it was terrible. He went out there,
he showed a lot of heart, he showed a lot
of grit to want to get out there and play,
and he played tremendously. And I still think his presence

(01:05):
was a factor in that game because they held the
Warriors get off to a great start, just to get
him out there, and they shot the ball real well.
But here's my only issue, Chris, and I'm not We
could sit there and second guess all we want, and
a part of what we do we do second guess.
But I never thought we both talked about this. I
never thought he was gonna play again, either one of them.

(01:26):
We did not think that because I know that they
kind of soft soaked the injury and told us it
was a calf. We were like, we're not sure he's
been off for thirty days. Is he playing because they're
in a three one hole in desperate and is he
playing because it's the NBA Finals and there's only three
more games in the entire basketball season, or is it
really that he's recovered like that and you can see

(01:49):
there all you want say, Well, he said, the doctor
says okay, and he said he wanted to play, So
that's all right, and the story, No, sometimes a team
has to stop a player because all most players, Chris,
I'll say most, not all, most players want to play.
And once they get the high side from the doctor,

(02:10):
they okay, they're on board. They know they don't feel
a hundred percent of they're not exactly the way that
they were, but they want to go out there. There's
a lot of there's risk and reward. There's reward that
he could have come back out there somehow, some way
got through those three games, helped him win a championship.
His legendary status go through the rule. He becomes a

(02:31):
living legend. Came back on a busted leg and won
three straight games or would have been the finals, MVP finals,
MVP one again, three in a row, three finals, MVP
what And he wasn't even a hundred percent right, So
a player, I get it, but I think the Warriors
let him down last night. They let him down. Well,

(02:53):
speaking of the Warriors, let's hear what their Gmbib Myers,
who spoke after the game. Here's what he says, very
it's an achilles injury. I don't know the extent of it.
He'll have an MRI tomorrow. Prior to coming back, he
went through four weeks with our medical team and it
was thorough and it was experts and Multiplamorize and multiple doctors,

(03:18):
and we felt good about the process. He was cleared
to play tonight. That was a collaborative decision. Those were
the first, the fakest, wet tears, crocodile tears that I've seen, Chris.
First of all, there were no tears, and that you
know a little boohoo when he was doing that was

(03:38):
the worst job of anybody on television since Robin Gibbons
did it with Mike Tyson on the old Barbara Walters Special.
And if you never saw google it. Go watch it
and see how quick and see YouTube it and go
see her next to him with that. I'm not buying
myers today. I'm sorry, Chris, I'm not. He got caught

(04:01):
with his hand in the cookie jar. Yes, now, oh
wait a minute, did he think about this is the
problem I have. Yes, the reward for the Warriors was
that they had a chance to get back in the
series and maybe win another title. But he didn't look
at the negative, which is this young man could have
heard his career. We don't know whether KD will ever

(04:23):
be the KD we we saw before this, Chris. We
don't know that. I'm not saying that that's the case,
but that's a big thing to just like ignore and
not taking a consideration that this guy hadn't played for
thirty days, and they they downplayed the injury from the beginning.

(04:44):
That's the problem that I have. And here's the last
part I'm gonna get, and I'm gonna turn it back
over to you. You can't believe team doctors. It's a
conflict of venturous. They work for their team and I'm
not saying that they're doing it deliberately, but their job
is to get players back out on the court, back
on the field. That is what their job is. And

(05:06):
if you're a doctor who works for a team, and Chris,
you can't get team players back on the field or
the court, they don't want you as a doctor. They
will get rid of you. So it isn't your best
interest to do what you gotta do to get those
players out there. And that's why people laughed at Kawhi
Leonard down in San Antonio because he wouldn't listen to

(05:26):
their team doctors when they clear them. He said, no,
I'm not playing, I don't care what they say, and
he got his own doctors. So my point is something's
got to change here when you talk about team doctors
who get paid by the team. I can't disagree with

(05:48):
most of what you said. I thought it was well
said by you. And we're gonna have David Child, doctor
David Child and who's a former NFL team doctor. We'll
have him on and about twenty minutes. A few things.
Number One, every the reaction that Kevin Durant had when

(06:09):
he first injured his calf, or is what they said
against Houston, was the same reaction that everyone I know
who's had an achilles in we've seen it. When you
reach back, feel like you got shot. Right, he got kicked,
hit with a bat in the in the last you
reach the same thing that Kevin Durant did. Number That's

(06:30):
why everyone and Reggie Miller, who was calling the game,
said he everyone thought it was in achilles, and then
they came back and said, what, Oh, it's the calf strain,
which which right away you go, oh, maybe he can
come back. Right you would have said achilles from day one.
He wouldn't have come back. He wouldn't have come back. Secondly,
if they were up three one or tied to two.

(06:51):
I don't think Kevin Durant plays. I think it was
a desperation move. They felt like they needed him to
play to try to win this series. So there's that.
And as far as where you place blame, and I'm
not absolving Bob Myers, he said to himself, he's the
head of basketball operations. I'm not absolving Steve Kerr, who

(07:16):
holds lesser, but he's a coach. He doesn't necessarily deal
with that stuff. But Bob Myers and Steve Kerr our
only they're not doctors, So they're going off the medical teams.
What they're telling understand like we would do if we
got doctors that work for us. What are you telling us?
What's the deal? And Rachel Nichols from ESPN said last

(07:39):
night she walked out of the arena last night with
Steve Kerr and that he said to her multiple times.
According to her, the doctors told us he couldn't injure himself. Further,
we hear that all the time, right, which always says,
baffled me. Yeah, you can't hurt it anymore. What I

(08:00):
don't seem to make sense to because we hear it
all the time and apparently gonna get and there's nothing
you can do. We've heard that. And so if indeed
this is true that the doctor said Kevin Durant could
not hurt himself any worse, then it's the doctors who
deserved the blame. Period the end and you know, so

(08:22):
now you have to look at why the Warriors had
those doctors hid, and you say to yourself, it is
a conflict of ventures. Every player should get a second opinion,
no doubt about, should have their own independent doctor who's
not on the company payroll. Chris, you know this. When
you work for somebody and you're on the payroll, that's
where your butter's your bread's buttered. So you know what

(08:46):
the deal is. No, this, this is this is bizarre.
And look we've seen a few examples of these. For
all those who killed Kawhi Leonard. Kawhi Leonard did the
smart thing. Isaiah Thomas who played in Boston a few
he lost, he was clear to go out there and
play on that bad hip. And what he did and
he played well and they got to the conference finals.

(09:08):
And then when the hip was worse, you know, series
is over and they find out the hip is worse
than it is. He never gets his big deal. He
was in line for about one hundred million. He was
in line for a big contract. Did the Celtics step
up and go way a minute? You played for us,
You gave your roll, you put your body on the line,
let us give you a deal. No, and the same

(09:29):
thing right now, Myers, instead of your crocodile tears, you
should be holding a press conference right now saying, on
midnight a free agency, we're signing Kdal at least gonna
offer him a max deal. He gave his all for us,
and we put him in jeopardy, and now we're gonna
compensate him, no matter if he can play or not,

(09:52):
five years two hundred and twenty. They should offer him
that on the I don't think you should say no
matter whether he could play or not. But I'm just
saying what he would outlay next year. If he can't
play for four years, I'm not offering him that. But
if he's not gonna play next year, but he's gonna
be healthy after that, Yeah, I offered him a five years,
two hundred and twenty one million dollars deal, and I

(10:13):
just had had he been signed with the rushed him
out there. If they had that on the table, What
you say, five years twenty one million, I bet you,
because it would have been their investment and they'd have
to look out for themselves to say, you know what,
I don't know if we want a chance it it's unbelievable.
Be sure to catch live editions of The Odd Couple

(10:33):
with Chris Brussar then Rob Parker week days at seven
pm Eastern four pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and
the iHeart Radio app. People are gonna be shocked when
we say this, But let's move to soccer. Yes, the
World Cup is going on, and the United States women's
team women's national team played their first game the day

(10:54):
against Thailand and they bludgend Thailand thirteen to nothing. Alex Morgan,
who's been on the cover of Sports Illustrator or been
in the COVERTS Trading swimsuit issue, she had five goals.
And you have a problem with the US beating Thailand thirteen?

(11:16):
Oh yeah, thirteen nothing in the soccer game, No Moss, Well,
they trying to do the Thailand. We're gonna have an
international incident. I mean really, it was already enough to
win by five or signal. They kept piling it on
and then and port television. You know, they had a cutaway.
They had a cutaway of a young woman taught Thailand

(11:39):
woman with a baby like an infant, and the baby
was crying hysterical as if the baby knew what the
score was, and instead it was because the baby was win.
And then later on they had another shot. You know,
let's get Tiger Woods's mom on the fall, see another one, right,
She was beside herself to thirteen nothing and then last one.

(12:00):
At least after the game. You are bombing like crazy
at the end of My god, I hope your stand
up's gonna be better than this. At the end of
the game, when the game is over, there another shot
of a player from Tyler. She's boohoo it or whatever.
And they thought it was because of the game and
a thirteen nothing to score, but in reality, she just
saw that Joe Kelly was warming up in the Dodger's

(12:21):
bullpen and oh my gosh, you got another one for me.
This is pathetic, Chris. There's no reason to win thirteen
You can know there is, because you obviously don't understand
the World Cup rules. I know, you know what, you
know what the tiebreaker is thirteen point differentially, don't need

(12:44):
thirteen goals after the best you do. You don't dance.
There's a beast you could go. You need to get
every point, every advantage we can. And these are adults,
these are eight year olds. These are high school kids.
We say it all the time. If you don't like
getting beat thirteen. Nothing didn't stop up from scoring. And
the last part is that the goalie for the team

(13:07):
Thailand team I think it was a I think she
had a bad achilles and the Warriors told her to
go out there and stand in front of the goal. Anyway,
Rob Parker, when you're the only one laughing at your jokes,
you guys don't have any We got this? How bad
it we have? We have got in the studio and

(13:29):
they're not even laughing. They're trying to be polite, little
polite snickers, you know what crass. They look at Rob
and roll their eyes. You could go to ten soccer
games to nazie thirteen goals, Rob, I mean you, you're
the type of guy that doesn't want knockouts in boxing.
Just out point them. You might hurt them, You might

(13:52):
hurt their feelings. This is the World Cup. If you
can't compete, don't into the tournament. What do you talking
about this? What about us? We're in competition too, We're
here on Fox Sports Radio. If our ratings are doing
well and rising through the roof, is there a point
where we should call off the dogs so we don't

(14:13):
get too far ahead of the competition where we're trying
to spare Jim roll. He had a run, that's all for.
You are making no sense, Yes I am. Sometimes you
know what, Sometimes pull it back and be soft. They
put here you go, they play, They put their reserves in.

(14:35):
I got feet a little the rules. I'm not gonna
send my reserves in and tell them don't score. Take
out your message players and just say put the clear
the bench, take out your best three players. There's no
reason to pour it on. Why are you doing that?
Thailand's done nothing to us. Let them play, all right?
Five six nothing is five thirteen nothing is an annihilation

(14:57):
and soccer and we don't need to do. You are
embarrassing yourself. This is sports man, It's about competition. These
are adults. I can't believe where you are because you
have two daughters. You want to see your daughters get
bludgeoned like that. If they would playing soccer, you would
be cool with it. My daughters are strong enough where
that wouldn't ruin them. A global television have to have

(15:19):
a beat down like that. Those girls can't show their
faces and they'll be where Scars. Was anybody in here watching?
I was watching. I was at AM five seventy hands.
It's the World Cup. They missed it. I knew. I
knew Thailand couldn't hang with us. Waiting for France and Sweden.

(15:40):
That's where I'm gonna be watching, know what, And I
knew we can beat them ten nothing, Then let's do it.
I hope you at the US losers won nothing because
they fought. They just used up all their goals for
the rust of the world calls. Should the waters Night
have swept the Calves last year? Oh lebron three and six?
It's getting worse than worse. He's in the old conversation.

(16:01):
Let him win one. Be sure to catch live editions
of The Odd Couple with Chris Broussard and Rob Parker
weekdays at seven pm Eastern four pm Pacific. Most people
around the NBA have been talking all season about Kevin
Durant going to the New York Knicks. I want to say, signed, sealed,

(16:22):
and delivered just about. I mean, that's how that was
at least the opinion of most people. And it wasn't done.
And it's not just that was the opinion of many people,
not just scuttlebuppa from players, agents executives, because you talked
to a lot of people. I have a couple of
cwpf's in the NBA, and that's what I heard. Look,
I heard Kevin Durant was recruiting players. Now, whether it

(16:45):
was all out, hey man, I'm going to New York
next year, you come with me, or just lighthearted you
know what you think about playing in New York next year?
You know? But whatever he was bringing up, two players
come play with me in New York. That's how strong
it was. And now that this injury, likely a torn achilles,
will keep him out of next season, he will be

(17:07):
out next season. So how that impacts free agency? I
mean the Knicks may not get anyone. Maybe Durant stays
in Golden State. We talked about Kyrie and Kevin Durant
playing together. Kyrie was trying to recruit him to join
him in Brooklyn because that's where everybody feels like Kyrie's going.
This affects Anthony Davis, This affects everything. And now Rob,

(17:29):
I want to ask you, let's start with this. If
you're the New York Knicks. Now, the New York Knicks
have been horrible for as long as some of you
can remember, Rob and I are old enough to remember
when they were actually a good team. Yes, a great team.
They couldn't get past Michael Jordan in the nineties, but
they were competitively. They had Michael Jordan down one year

(17:54):
O two to right, right right, And if it wasn't
if Charles Smith would have made a dunk or layup
in Game five, who knows, Mike, Mike might have might
not have made it, and you give right, And it's
interesting when you watch that now Charlesmith was six ten
sixty eleven, but Jordans six six, Pippin six, seven to seven, right,

(18:15):
they were They weren't letting Hi like they were challenging him, right.
I mean, that's what gets lost everybody. I know, I
know he's got interest on them, but they were like
going hard at him defensively to make those layups very contested.
But anyway, the point is this, if you're the New
York Knicks robe, I'm just gonna give you my take
and then you can roll. Okay. If I'm the New

(18:38):
York Knicks and I'm saying this for everybody, I still
would offer Kevin Durant a maximum contract, four years, one
hundred and sixty four million k D. I know you're
gonna sit out next year, and I know when you
come back in twenty twenty might require some lord management.

(19:03):
But we believe in you, we know your greatness, we
know that you can lift us to a championship, and
so we're offering you the max even with the torn
achilles injury. But you wouldn't do it, no way, no how.
This is why the Nicks have been god awful for

(19:25):
all these years. They always make that so desperate that
they always make the right the wrong move, because they're like, well,
we'll take we'll take damage. Goods. Katie's a great player.
It's there a chance he's gonna bounce back from this years.
I'm just saying, okay, but there's also a chance that
he won't be exactly the same player. All I'm saying

(19:46):
is be careful. When that can is dented or that
egg shell is cracked, there's a reason that it is
still on. It's marked down because there's something wrong with it.
I gotta give it. That was a nice little metaphor
that it is that was good. If it wasn't, then
why were they marking down to can good just because
it's don't push it too far. But my point is,

(20:09):
I understand the Knicks want them, they thought they had them.
They're not getting the healthy version that they thought they
were getting. That's worth the one sixty four is that
that that is worth that? I get it. I know
Nick fans wanted k D. He's gonna sit out this
twenty uh, the next season, right season, the whole season.

(20:35):
All I'm saying is you don't if he wants to
come and he stays, there's got thirty one million he's
gonna get if he just doesn't opt out, stay there, uh, rehab,
get better, and then you can revisit and Knicks still
can come to me. You're not gonna your argument about
I want to see him. You're not gonna see him. Yeah,

(20:55):
but I can work him out after he gets back
after rehab. That's all I need to see. He don't
have to be in game. He has a playing game.
But I don't know. I just remember the Knicks and
this one I remember because I thought they did the
right thing, even though it hurt their franchise. When Bernard
King got hurt and he had remember what the knee
was a knee or knees. It was the acl right here,

(21:18):
but he but he was really messed up, and he
refused the Knicks one to resign him and everything. He
refused to let the Knick doctors look at him, and
they said, we cannot sign you to a contract now,
don't want can't see you. If Kevin durant is, you know,
doesn't play nice with the Knicks or let their doctors

(21:41):
see him, that's one thing. I get that that tells
us you're hiding something. I don't know why in the
world you wouldn't let doctor see Am I right? No,
I get that cause I'm just saying k D look,
and you're right, it's a risk. But here's my question, Rob,
where in the world are the Knicks going if they
don't do this really, I don't know. I mean other

(22:04):
guys out there that have a lot of money. Look
at it, Kyrie. If it's right that he's going to Brooklyn,
people say we're gonna get him too, because I don't
think he should go to Brooklyn if he's not getting
a d or Katie to go with. Yeah, but if
he wants to be happy to be near his home, Okay,
let's set. But let's don't you think that there's something
to that crop. Let's set Let me let me say this.

(22:26):
When I talk about where players should go for free agency,
it is strictly based on basketball. I'm with you. If
Kyrie Irving is like, look, I grew up a Nets fan,
I'm from New Jersey. I want to play for the Nets,
more power to him. I won't criticize a player for
making a personal decision. That's why Lebron wants to come
out here for lifestyle. His kids go to high school

(22:50):
in LA. He wants to get his businesses straight. He's
obviously done tons of stuff on the basketball court already.
I'm not mad at that. We all make lifestyle decisions.
So my criticisms or questions about where a guy goes
in free agency are based on off the course cuff.
But I'm talking about strictly basketball wise. If New York

(23:13):
doesn't get Kyrie, if New York doesn't get Klay Thompson,
if New York doesn't get Anthony Davis, where in the
world are they going if they don't sign kd But
what if they get a d and they were able
to make that trade? Chris, I mean, I hear you.
You're saying, you're basically giving him the choice of going
there with nothing. I don't think that's a I don't

(23:35):
think that that's the ideal situation for anybody. Nobody wants
to go there with nothing. Yeah, I'm just saying he'll
even want to go to the Knicks. Now, he may
want to stay in Golden Stay now, well he might,
especially if they lose this series. And clear I think
even if they win it, like the narrative that they
don't nay, k D has to die a little bit.

(23:56):
We already know that he's shown hard, he's shown, you know,
the heart of a champion, and you see the struggles
they are. They stra they're better with that with him,
just like and no doubt when not. So if he
goes back to Golden State, I don't think that same

(24:19):
narrative follows him. And look, it's a risk, especially now.
It was a risk before he got hurt robbed, because
as great as KD is, he is yet to prove
he could win the championship leading his own team. And
it wasn't like he was playing with scrubs in Oklahoma City.
You had a really good supporting cast Russell Westbrook, Stephen Adams,
ser Jim Baka. I know they were injuries sprinkled in

(24:41):
the well, not then they were young when they had
heart Yeah, but at a point they became veterans. And
I'm not saying he can't do it, but he hasn't
done it. And to leave Golden State, a place where
he hecked he might be able to win two or
three more rings after this year in Golden State, to

(25:04):
leave that for a situation where you may not be
able to win another ring was a risk when you
were one hundred percent. Now with the Achilles tear, it's
really a risk. So I would have no problem, no
blame for Kevin Durant if he stayed in Golden State.
So I don't know that he wants to go to
the Knicks now, But I'm just saying, Rob, if I'm

(25:26):
the Knicks, I'm still trying to do it. And I
will say this as well, I want your opinion on this.
If I'm the Knicks and I can't get kyd or Kyrier,
you know some other great Klay Thompson, some other great
free agent. I'm not really going after Anthony Davis because
as great as he is, I don't think he can

(25:47):
leave he's not the number one guy, like he can't
do what Kawhi Leonard. Just understand that. But the only
problem is you got to look at it from a
business standpoint along when I got your basketball on the court,
who are you selling to people to buy tickets that
that ain't enough, That that ain't enough. I'm selling Anthony Davis.
He's the future and we're gonna we're gonna develop that

(26:09):
young star and they build around. They've been waiting since
nineteen seventy three. But he ain't how many games they're
gonna win. Anthony Davis and Lisa's a star marquee name
who is only wild twenty five or twenty sixty eight old.
He's not like you're getting the Anthony Davis after playing
ten years in New Orleans. He's still a young guy seven,
but he's still only twenty's young. So you have a

(26:32):
future with him and say, well, he might be our
cornerstone or our centerpiece, and now we'll add another guy
or two and maybe somebody else will come to play
with him. I mean that, here's the other thing. That's
what I would look at the other from the business
tim Even though the Knicks and the Lakers are the
two teams on Anthony Davis' wish list. There's no guarantee.
And I know this. They're not gonna say to the

(26:53):
Nick They're gonna say to the Knicks, look, we love
New York. We definitely you know, it's one of the
two places we want to go. There's a great chance
we resign. But they're not going to guarantee we're signing
on the dotted line. The next thing, you can't make
that deal. Now, if you're the Lakers, you can make it.
They're gonna tell them. I mean, you know he's gonna

(27:13):
stay with Lebron. He's what which Paul, that's the fixes in.
That's why. That's why I don't think that New Orleans
is gonna make that deal. Cause multiple why I don't
make they gonna make that deal. I'm gonna tell you why.
Because they always felt like they got fleeced by It's
a new relation. It doesn't matter. Ownership has not changed,
and they will feel like they stole our player. That

(27:34):
ownership is not making the deal. Ownership sign off on
the David Griffin likes lines nice. Here's what they like.
They like brandon ingram first. They like lines overall, second,
they like Kyle Kuzma third, and Griffin will be out
of another job just like he wasn't Clearly they they
and they would get the fourth pick. All right, I'm

(27:54):
