It's The Best Of The Odd Couple with Chris Broussard and Rob Parker! Chris and Rob debate whether tonight's Game 7 matchup between the Houston Rockets and the Oklahoma City Thunder is bigger for James Harden (for negative reasons) or Chris Paul (for positive reasons), explain why the unfortunate reality is that black athletes have a responsibility to speak out on social issues, and get into a heated argument about what the addition of Leonard Fournette means for Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this upcoming season.

s R. You're listening to the Best of the Odd
Couple with Chris Brush and Rod Parker. Speaking of guts,
speaking of courage, Rod Parker, that's what Game seven often
comes down to. And we have a Game seven for

(00:42):
the ages. How about last night's was tremendous, right, What
do I tell you about somebody not playing well, shooting well?
Jamal Jamal Murray struggle big time. Yeah, I mean it
was still able to win. But Chris, how often do
you see that? I mean, it wasn't like out of
Crystal Ball happens. God's put up these big numbers. You
get the game seven. I don't know what it is. Well,

(01:04):
I think it's nerves. It's just I mean, think about
Jamal Murray for a night, what maybe for what three days,
was one of the faces of the NBA. Is that
fair to say? Don't you think for three days, for
three days as a prison of the moment. Yeah yeah, yeah.
I mean obviously he wasn't one of the best players
in the league. But I mean we're done, the Clippers

(01:26):
were done. There were only a few series left. He's
going for these huge numbers. He and Donovan Mitchell for
two or three days were the faces of the NBA
there in prime time, and that can get to you.
Mitchell didn't have a great game. He came on strong,
and he didn't either and struggled early. The thing about

(01:48):
Jamal Murray, though, which was crazy, was last year when
Denver was in that game seven, do you remember, Yeah,
and they lost to Portland. He shot four for eight,
struggle terrible in that game. So his team helped him out. Donovan,
you know with the bad turnover at the end of
the game, and uh, you know, that's a big that's

(02:10):
a choke job because if you if you remember, I
played out Chris. They they were up three to one,
and don't forget game one, it took a miracle for
Denver to win that game and overtime they should have
won that game and instead they wind up with nothing.
They were up three to one in control of that series.
And I do think Denver is a better team though, No,
I get it. Yeah, And I'm just gonna be I
don't give him much of a chance against the Clippers.

(02:31):
I think it's a more intriguing matchup. You, I mean,
I think there's more juice to Denver. Yeah. Yeah. Um.
But here's the thing quickly, and then we'll get into
tonight's game. The thing about Jamal Murray. He's not their
best player. No, no, no, I know he's really good.
But Donovan Mitchell is by far Utah's best player, all

(02:53):
due respect to Rudy Gobert. And I guess he's about
to sign a contract extension, right, that's the report. Yeah,
well deserved. Well they better lock him up. Um, But
Jamal Murray is not their best players. The second best
obviously Nicole Yoki, who did come up big yesterday himself.
He's great man, he's a great player. So all right, um,

(03:17):
but tonight's Game seven even more intriguing. In my opinion,
this was the series I was most excited about. It's
got the great storyline, um, and it's the Oklahoma City
Thunder of course against the Houston Rockets. The storyline, of
course being that this was the blockbuster trade last year,
Russell Westbrook too for Chris Paul. Two superstars traded for

(03:41):
one another. Chris Paul shocked. You know, he had signed
up to be in Houston long term. He had forced
his way there out of the Clippers, and then they
just trade him, not only wanting to get along with
James Harden. Yeah, but the trade was just being fair
and honest. He is dumped, like like, we don't want

(04:02):
he was dumped that. It wasn't dumped. No, no, no,
well Houston one team. Okay, see he's like, hey, we're
not gonna win a championship, so we're doing you a solid.
So him, we'll get something to return, right. But but
but Chris Paul was dumped by Houston. They did not
want him. He didn't get along with the Hardened. There

(04:24):
was just some issues going on and they were basically saying,
we can't win with this guy. That's really what I
was saying, which was a mistake because two years before that,
I'm not I still think Golden State would have come
back and win. But hey, they were up three two
on the Warriors going home, and so you gotta give
him that. But Rob, I'm gonna throw this question at you.

(04:47):
Who has the most at stake tonight legacy wise, and
I'm gonna I'm not. Most people are saying Hardened or Westbrook,
but they're the third guy. You said it, it's Hardened
Westbrook or Chris Paul. Who's got the most on the
line tonight. I think when you say on the line,
I think it's Chris Paul, and I get the Hardened thing.

(05:09):
If they lose or whatever. You want to make an
excuse that Westbrook was hurt to start the series and
he would never really hisself and that hampered him. You
could get away with that Chris, same thing with Westbrook.
But Chris Paul in this case because he was dumb
and if he was able to me if he had

(05:31):
that great game in Game six to force the Game seven,
we've seen this movie before and then Game seven's a
fly and this team doesn't advance. If he's able to
extinguish the Rockets and Hardened Westbrook and get his team
that was supposed to be just fodder for the Western

(05:51):
Conference and a rebuild, I think you'd have to look
at Chris Paul differently. I think he has the most
to gain and the more to lose. I think you
could make a case for Harden in Westbrook and next
year and a new coach and a new system. But
if Chris Paul again comes up empty in game seven
and and he's just like what we've seen in the past,

(06:15):
people will say he is who he is, he is
who he thought he was, and if he would have
upset them and win this, you'd have to give this
guy like a hell of a lot of credit to
be able to go where he had to go with
no expectations and get to the second round. I totally disagree,
And I'm not saying Chris Paul didn't have anything to

(06:37):
gain from a victory. Of course, of course he does.
But let's face it, Chris Paul's legacy is set great player,
all time great point guard. He's never gonna lead a
team to a championship. Now. If he goes and joins
Lebron somehow or joins another great player where he's a

(06:58):
second or third guy, he's a facilitator, you know, still
a clutch point guard. He could win it, but he's
not leading anybody to a championship and going to the
second round of the playoffs, even in a great upset
isn't changing his legacy because it's the second round of
the playoffs and they're gonna get hammered in five games
at the most if they get to the Lakers Westbrook.

(07:21):
I think is a similar situation. We know what Russ is.
He's an all time great individual player. I will I
will Backruss against anyone as far as his legacy. He's
a great individual player, will be iconic for the three
straight triple double seasons. But you will never win a
championship playing the way he plays if he's your number

(07:44):
one or really number two guy. Because we was with
Kevin Durant for at nine years, eight years, and now
he's with Harden. His style is just as great as
he is individually, he's not winning the championship. It was
similar with Alan Everson. You just it doesn't mean you
weren't outstanding, first ballot Hall of Famer. But we know

(08:07):
what Russ is. Harden is the guy. Now. I don't
think Harden is gonna win the championship playing the way
he's playing, but I think the jury is out more
on him than any other player. But I think if
there's too many excuses that you could make for hard,
what I mean, Chris Paul doesn't have a second star.
So even if we say Westbrook west there's no he

(08:29):
didn't have a second star. That's a part of it.
And then he has the all time worst I know
you want to put him in the Hall of Fame.
He has the alla. No, you don't bury the league.
You're gonna tell me James Harden's not yet a Hall
of Famer. No, not James Harden. I'm talking about the coach.
Oh okay, h okay, okay. And then he has like
the worst post, the guy who's put up more wins

(08:51):
during the regular season, but but futility when it comes to,
you know, getting to a championship. And he's had great teams.
So he also has that albatross around his neck. And
now you think if Harden loses tonight, you think people
are gonna give him a pass? Yep this season? Yep,
because I do. If you think the first round to

(09:14):
freaking Oklahoma City with the guy you Jettesis, did you
did you just see how Westbrook played in Game six,
how poorly he played. I'm just telling you had not
take because what people are gonna say if Harden doesn't
take control tonight and if he lets Westbrook be the
main guy. People are gonna kill Harden for that. No,
they'll kill Westbrook for not acquiescent uh, not giving in

(09:38):
and let it Harden be that guy. I mean, I
think they'll kill him both. I think they'll kill them both.
But I think Harden, Hardened, they're all great individually. Okay.
I I think you can argue I would take Harden
over Westbrook. But you can certainly make an argument that
Westbrook was better than Harden because triple double three years,
Like you said, Rob, those triple doubles came in win.

(10:00):
He did go deep in the playoffs, you know, earlier
in his career. But Harden three straight years leading the
league and scoring. Some people saying he's the best one
on one offensive player they've ever seen, some people putting
them ahead of Michael Jordan in that regard. And if
he and we know he's had problems in the playoffs,

(10:23):
and if he were to go down to a lower
seed that has one aging star who's a point guard,
I just think Harden's got the most to lose. But
eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox eight seven seven
nine nine six sixty three sixty nine is you'll turn
the way in who do you think in tonight's game seven?

(10:47):
O KC. Houston has the most to lose legacy wise,
And I think that Chris Paul When I say that,
not that it's about losing for him, he has the
most to gain. He was one who was the cast off,
do you know what I mean? So true? But let's
be honest, Rob. Is his legacy changing if they win

(11:07):
this game. I'm not saying the next they look at him,
the way people look at him will change for right
at least for right now, and then who knows as
he as he finishes up his career. That's all I
want to make it clear. I think he has a
lot to gain if he's able to pull this off.

(11:28):
Eastern four pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the
iHeart Radio app. But Lou Williams was talking about just
how overwhelming this period of time is uh for NBA
players and specifically the boycott, but just in general with
COVID and being in the bubble and all that. Here

(11:50):
here he is, what's a lot man it's everything that
we're dealing with is overwhelming. We're inside of a controlled
environment outside of yesterday, without our families. You know, we're
expected to entertain you guys, save the world, speak up
on issues that are very personal that hits home for us.
So we're overwhelmed. And so I think a lot of

(12:10):
our opinions and a lot of our feelings reflected that
last week, and we had another opportunity to speak again
as a group and decided to make a decision and
continue to use our platforms. Nothing that we're dealing with
is easy. Let's not play, put your put your career
in jeopardy, put your futures on hold. On how you
make a livelihood. You know a lot of people are
quick to say, why don't you guys just stop playing

(12:31):
and just don't play and protest, and you know those
same people are going to go to work the next day.
Sometimes I just think we get caught up in the
entertainment aspect of this business and people kind of forget
that this is the way that we feed our families
and this is our livelihoods. And so it's just it
was an overwhelming time. It was an overwhelming few days.
I'm glad that we got some positive steps out of

(12:53):
it to continue on the fight for social injustices to
people of color, people in general who have dealt with
police brutality. I was I was happy that out of
everything outside of the pause, that we were able to
provoke some change. So I was proud in that estimate.
I think that's very well said by Lou Williams. And

(13:15):
I know some people might say, overwhelmed. You're making millions
of dollars to play a game. Stop it. Stop complaining
about being at Disney World, staying in what what What
rob before Star Hotel. Probably stop it, that's what people
are saying. But I say, you're off. I understand where

(13:36):
lewis coming from, and I understand what you're saying. You know, yeah,
athletes have it good. But he wasn't comparing himself to
the average joe. He wasn't complaining. He was just stating
the fact that it is. It was an old It's
overwhelming right now because these guys are away from their families,
they're they're worried, you know, to the degree that everybody

(14:00):
is about COVID. They're you know, in a just a
bubble can be tougher on than anyone because you're it's
the same thing every single day. One of the coaches,
I don't know if it's Mike D'Antoni had a great
quote Rob He said, every day is Wednesday here, you know,
and every day that you saw that movie with Bill
Murray got up every day and it was the same thing.

(14:21):
And that's that's what it feels like. And then on
the top of that, they gotta you know, they're they're
fighting for social justice. So I get where Low's coming from.
I usually would, you know, get with the fans like, yeah,
I athlete shouldn't complain, but no, this is a little different.
But go ahead, rap, Yeah, this is totally different. And
I'm with Lou Williams. I get it. Talk about overwhelming.
Everybody acts like it's natural to leave your wife and

(14:44):
kids from for six weeks or whatever it was. Chris, right,
I mean that that that's not I mean, I know
you feel Oh you could sleep in, you could do
whatever you want. No, you can't. You know he misses
those chicken wings. That's right. Magic, See Chris, you I'm
gonna tak it. You know, you know you can get

(15:04):
chicken wings, just the chicken wings. You don't have a
time there where nobody's naked. Yeah, do they? Actually we
could go there and nobody's dancing and naked. We'll put
I'll put a blindfold on you and we'll go in
and get some wings. Okay, you don't have to see
what's going on. You'll be all right. You won't. You
won't turn the stone if you see somebody's booty. It's okay,

(15:26):
you know it ain't about that. I'm committed. You know
that that. But no, man, I think God, I think
lou Williams uh made a great point and he did,
and he was well stated that it could be overwhelming,
and it was. And I get everything going on. People
looking towards the athletes for leadership and guidance, because let's

(15:48):
be frank, they are the people in this country most
taken seriously because people buy into the entertainment thing. People.
As we know, Chris, you've been to a million games.
You go to a game, a playoff game or some
World series or whatever it is, NBA finals, and the

(16:11):
camaraderie and closeness of fans at a game and what
it means to them living and dying on every shot
or home run or whatever it is do you know
what I mean? Like everybody drops all of these other
issues that you might have with people, and you're wearing

(16:33):
the same color and hat that I am, Do you
know what I mean? And that's our team down there,
and that's probably the greatest feeling in the world. And
that's why I think athletics are so important in this country.
You know, they really are, because it's it's something that
people can can grasp together a common ground and let
down all those other things that keep us separate. Does

(16:56):
that make sense, yes, yes. But you know we were
talking earlier with Rob g and he said he doesn't
think it should be on the athletes to speak out
about social justice and all that. And I said this,
and we agree, Rob. African Americans long for the day

(17:17):
when our athletes don't have to speak out. Let's just
keep it real. This is all about race. Everything you
said about sports and Americas is all true. But the
white athlete does not have this burden on you of
speaking for his race, fighting for equality for his race
and justice and having to know about political issues. No,

(17:41):
Michael Jordan was killed because he didn't speak out on
social issues. No white athlete would go through that I'll
give you. You know what. Here's another one. When a
black athlete signs a big contract, because you know what
they do, You're gonna go back to the community and
help your community or build the center or donate money.
White athletes will never asked that right after they signed

(18:03):
a big contract. No one's asked Gordon Hayward, well, what
are you gonna do? Are you going back to your
to your community and you're gonna help the youth? And
you know, but they don't have to. It's because the society,
the system. Let's just face it. When people say this
country was set up for white people, it was. It

(18:24):
was created for white people, and the system catches white people.
There's a safety net there. For the most part, African
America is not the case. So we have to do
it ourselves. And that's what people when they say systemic change,
systemic change will really come when our athletes don't have
to speak out, when that safety net is there for

(18:45):
us too, when all the advantages and things that whites get,
blacks and other races are getting as well. And I look,
I feel it myself. Every successful African American rob you
know this, what do we do? We? I mean there's
something that might just totally turn their back on our people.

(19:05):
But most of us we want to help. We reach back,
We mentor we bring others into the business, whatever it is,
we reach back because we know we've got that responsibility.
And I think, look, I've said it before, I said again,
African American athletes have power that your average, even successful

(19:31):
African American doesn't have. They are the most beloved African
Americans on the earth. They're the most well connected to
the corporate dollars because they everybody wants to endorse them.
Everybody wants to play golf with them, Everybody wants to
be in their presence, go out to dinner with them.
They're the most they're the wealthiest buy in large. If

(19:55):
you look at the top ten African wealthiest African Americans,
virtually all all of them, eight or nine of the
ten will have made it from entertainment or sports. Oprah,
Bob Johnson who owned created BT, Tiger Woods, jay Z Diddy, uh, George,
Michael Jordan's and then they're the most irreplaceable. That's it.

(20:20):
Your average person of every race is somewhat replaceable, your
average guy of every race. But these guys, these athletes.
You can't find anybody walking on the street who could
throw a ball or hit a home run, right, or
you can't. Right, they're white ones in like baseball and
some other sports that are irreplaceable. So I'm not just

(20:43):
saying the black ones. The black ones are irreplaceable. And
so that gives them leverage that can you imagine? Rob
and we talked about this a few days ago. If
the NFL players boycotted, people were like, Oh, I don't
need the NBA. They can boycott forever fall I care.

(21:03):
They can go see what kind of job they get
after that. Oh, they won't say that about football because
people are too tied into it. Sunday is all about football.
Uh Now, Monday and some Saturdays and Thursdays are also
about football. Everybody's got their fantasy leagues. Some people got
as minis what twenty twenty two dozen fantasy teams while

(21:25):
they're making money off of it. There's an right, there's
no way America could do without the black football player
in particular, or the black athlete in general. And so
that gives us a power that unfortunately we're in a
position where we need them to use it. We do,

(21:46):
And and Rob I think I speak for you when
I say this. We can't wait for the day when
they don't have to, when they can just be a
baseball player and about it exactly and they could just
go ahead. They signed a big contract, nobody asking what
they're gonna do with them money, you know what I mean,
and all the other stuff that goes on. Uh, feeling

(22:08):
like you have to look at the black athletes, even
Chris we talk about it. Feel like they got to
donate money back to their universities, these rich universities, Right,
that's the kind of pressure that's put on them. Like really, yep,
you're asking me from You got an endowment of two
billion dollars and you want money from me. Fox Sports

Hey guys, breaking news. Leonard Fournette and signing with the
Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Adam Schefter first announced it. Rob Parker

(22:51):
is in the dull drum. No, I'm not. This is huge. Now.
Wait for first of all, you're giving him a great
receiving corps. Why receivers and tight ends. You're giving him
a good offensive line, you're giving him a very good

(23:14):
and improving defense, a very good defensive coordinator. And now
he's gonna have a legitimate one thousand yard rusher. This
reminds me of not stop it, stop it, You'll get
your chance. No what, I'm glad that you went there.

(23:34):
This is nothing like Cleveland, because not one player in
Cleveland as could even sniff what Tom Brady has done.
And bringing the super Bowl. Other than Tom Brady is nobody.
They didn't make the flash. Give you brother some talent.

(23:56):
He's no longer at his age. Can he lead mediocre
receivers and all that and make them better? But give
him some real talent at the skilled positions. And now
Tampa Bay has done it. Rob Parker right now, this
very moment, if you want I don't care how many
wings you want to bet, and if you want it,

(24:18):
we already have a bet. I'm gonna we don't have
to change. We got them making the playoffs, going to
the super Bowl, I think, and I said, I didn't
say we didn't bet super Bowl. That's super Bowl. You
just got four naw need I want to super Bowl.
I see Rob stop it. Hold on, no, I'll stop it.

(24:41):
I not let you. I am not picking anybody for
the super Bowl. God, you just say he's got everything
big when it's fine, Let's make that you got four
NA playoffs. We got wins on that. I want to bet.
Is that all the ben Okay? Jordan's Jordan on the

(25:02):
super bowls? No super Bowl? Super Bowl? Scared? No super
Bowl Stevens. Are they making the playoffs? Rob Parks super Bowl? No,
they're not making Put some Jordans on it. I just
put George. No, you poff. You put Jordan's at They're
going to the super Bowl now that they got let it. Fournette, No,

(25:23):
you got Lon Brady, you got everything. Chris, you put
your money where your mouth is you ever scared you? Chris?
Chris Busot is a scanny cat. He took a big game.
But his wallet is in his His money's in his wallet.
But Chris tom Brady's this get him talent. Come on, now,
where's your money? Put your money up, Chris, stop stop

(25:45):
him in it. Harn you already lost a pair of Jordans,
owned up, pony up. Put your money up. Since he
got let it Fournette and you love Tom Brady at
forty three years old. You're scared. You're chicken because you
know that the Bucks haven't been in the plaoffs in
twelve years. That's broken. You answer your answer, I'm strong girl,

(26:10):
with your money up. I'm strong, uplia, that's your answer.
Put your money up. Look at them. Rob GE's shaking
in his boots, and you thought it wasn't because he
had that bad call. I'm actually just trumking on until
you let me talk. Go ahead, but look notice how
I let you talk. You're done. You're talking all that jazz,

(26:30):
sticking out your chest, yelling, screaming. He's a scaredy cat,
using elementary school you language in terms, Rob Parker, I
came to you with the Jordan bet you talked to
all this stuff about Pat Mahomes isn't gonna win anymore.

(26:52):
They're talking too much all not one, not two, not three.
They're talking about seven or more Super Bowls. They're talking dynasty.
And I challenged you because you were saying they wouldn't
win another super Bowl. That's when I challenged you, and
you back down. You didn't want none, you wouldn't even

(27:12):
put wings on that, let alone some Jay's. And now
you want to say I'm scared. You want to say
I'm scared. I'm going out on the limb picking of
forty three year old quarterback to make the playoffs. It's
never been done. I'm willing to bet something that has
never been done in human history, and you want me

(27:36):
to go to extra mile. Chances are Father Time gets
the best of time. Brady. Either have the covering of
Bill Belichick this year, but you are afraid to bet
You've got human history on your side. Bruce arians hasn't
won jack in a long time, and even when he

(27:59):
won the it wasn't the ultimate. I got a bunch
of young, unproving guys, as you keep saying, haven't made
the playoffs in twelve years. But when I asked you
to put your money where your mouth is, you're back down.
You try to up to Annie to something crazy, and

(28:22):
when I'm ready, I'll be ready. I'll make my pick
when it's time. But I don't rush. So I'm right
a lot because I don't rush. I take my time.
You wanna you wanna, I know you're buying games or
some of the young listeners might fall for looking robbed.
He's calling Chris out, he's backing Chris up. The Vets. No,

(28:48):
the day Ones, No, they know the Day one listeners. No,
Rob Parker, they will not fall for your Shenanigans. So
if you want to bet some Jordans, it's playoffs or bust.
I'm done as usual. Chris Broussard is a prisoner of

(29:14):
the moment. He was so worked up about Leonard Fournette.
He was saying, I've been saying, all they gotta do
is get Tom Brady some some skilpid players. Now they
got you gotta dollard where you are Russia. And then
when I say just put up your two hundred dollars
for your Jordans. Now, all of a sudden, Chris is
making all the excuses. You're prothetic. Chris Broussard, you know

(29:38):
that you don't You don't believe in Tom Brady. You
don't believe Tom Brady's the gold. That's why you're cowering.
