s R. You're listening to the Best of The Odd
Couple with Chris Brush and Rob Harker. The big news
just broke well hour or so ago. Jimmy Gee, after
all of this timing, he will be back with the
nine Ers. He's taken a pay because he was supposed
(00:44):
to make about twenty nine million this year. He is
going down a six and a half million. Obviously. I'm
sure there's some incentives that could get it back up there.
It could get up to about sixteen million if he
hit all the bonuses. Um. But you people might say, well,
why would he take a pay cut, because you know,
(01:04):
it seemed like they were gonna cut him right um
before the contract was guaranteed. And so if they had
cut him, another team would have probably signed him for
even less than that, right, And so he's actually probably
getting more money than he would have gotten, but but
negotiated this such a bad contract, Like like you got
(01:26):
a twenty nine million dollar number, Chris, that doesn't mean
anything that that. Yeah, I mean that's that last year
of his deals like that because it's not real money.
So that twenty nine he never was gonna get that,
like right, he just wasn't gonna get it just right. Well,
that may be changing if they if Lamar pushes for
(01:46):
this guaranteed deals as you and and and I said
he should. But anyway, um, I like it, Rob. I
think that I've said all along that the forty nine
ers should keep Jimmy g his money. They just didn't
want to pay him for out of principle because his
money's not negatively affecting the team, all right, He's not
(02:08):
gonna affect When they resigned Nick Bosa in the off season,
they already signed Deebo Samuel. They just didn't want to
pay a backup quarterback twenty nine million dollars. But I
think it's good that he's there because this team is
built to win now. And look, they're turning the team
over the trade lance, which I agree with as much
(02:28):
as you know. I've touted Garoppolo for winning I think
you put all that in the trade lance. He does
have physical tools, see what he can do. But if
he can't, it doesn't perform well. Or if he gets hurt,
don't you don't give up the season. Now you've got
a quarterback you know can win from the win with
(02:49):
and so they'll keep Jimmy G as insurance. And I
think that's a smart thing to do. I think this
is the dumbest thing going. I just think Trey Land
should be a quarterback. Drafted him. You moved up in
the draft. People questioned you, you want to move on
to him? Why keep Jimmy G around if you've moved on,
(03:09):
And I just think it's still that kid's gonna be there,
and he knows what Jimmy G has done in the
past and that you know, I gotta play great because
if I don't, you know, then they're gonna put this
guy in. It doesn't show a full commitment. So I
think the forty nine's have made a mistake here. I
don't care what it would have cost. Cut him, you know,
(03:30):
or get him to take some sort of settlement, but
move on from him if you're gonna make that move,
Because to me, if all things are equal, and you're right, Chris,
they do have a team that's ready to win. They
almost went to the super Bowl for a second time
during Jimmy G's a tenure there in San Francisco, if
not for a draft interception exactly that intercepted in two
(03:54):
super Bowls in three years. Absolutely, you know that that
was a game changer that Stafford threw a short pick,
but it didn't happen. But here's the point. I think
what they do here is they give themselves a safeguard,
which I just think you should make a commitment to
(04:15):
the guy and say and and I'll give you. And
I'm not saying he's on this level at all, But
you know when when the Packers just decided, Okay, dude,
we're done. I mean, don't forget Brett Farr played Chris
like three more years and got to the NFC Championship game.
He wasn't finished, Remember, he wasn't finished at all. But
(04:37):
they just decided, this is our guy. We're gonna go
with Aaron Rodgers and that's the end of it. And
Trey Lance, if you really believe he's got that something
special Chris, and you're watching him and you feel good
about him, move on from Jimmy G. Don't keep him around.
And teams do this sometimes just so that you give
(04:58):
the guy that you've turned it over to the ultimate
confidence that this is my team, come hell or high water.
They're gonna let me learn. The only way I'm gonna
learn is by playing. But what if he's not that good? Well,
Sam Dearner was a number three pick, just like Trey Lance.
(05:19):
Mitch Trubisky was a number two pick. Marcus Mariolden was
a number two pick, you know as well as I do,
just because you were drafted high. Obviously, people believe in
all these guys they pick high, and all of them
aren't that good. Now he may be a star, I
don't know. We'll see. But if he's not that good,
and if you made a mistake, then you could easily
(05:42):
go to Jimmy G. And here's the other thing. Let's say,
just for sake of argument, he starts off the season
after five games. You see, uh, we're not playing well
and he definitely ain't playing well. He's the problem, and
they go to Jimmy. Now, I do think Rob he
should have a long leash six seven, you know, I
(06:04):
don't think you three games in, you get out rid
of him in on it. I think you're right in
that give him the chance. But if five six games
in seven games in, he's it's clearly not ready. You
can go to Jimmy G. And then he's still young.
He has started three games in like the last three years,
(06:28):
and one of them was at the Division one Double
A level, so he very well may not be ready.
You use the Brett Farve Aaron Rodgers comparison. Well, Rogers
had sat for three years. This kid came from lower
level college ball and sat for one year, and so
(06:48):
he may not yet be ready, and then he might
be ready next year. So I don't think if if
indeed they at some point have to go to Jimmy
G because he's not playing well, that doesn't after me
and Trey Lance is done. I'm not saying that he's
ready next year now, he's not quite ready yet. I
just think that that's the decision, and that's why you're
(07:10):
in the front office. That's why you're the GM and
the head coach. It's like like like the Packers didn't flinch.
They could have easily said, we know whatever, a Bret
can still play with like you, I know, And that's
what I'm saying, Like if I'm if I'm Trey Lance,
I don't believe that they have full confidence in me
because they're still keeping the guy around who's been winning
(07:33):
for them and it's just a money thing. If this
wasn't a money thing, paying him twenty nine million dollars
and having a guy who you drafted, because it didn't
stop the Packers from saying that Jordan Love, Okay, well
we drafted you, we moved up for you, but but
the guy we thought we were gonna replace you with
just one back to back MVPs. So tough, tough luck.
(07:55):
You gotta sit there. How many games has he played.
He's played one game since he's been drafted. That's the thing.
So so what if Trey Lance does feel like, man,
they're not fully committed to him, So go out there
make him fully committed. I mean, this is big boy football.
This ain't It ain't about gift wrapping you anything. Because
you were the third pick in the draft. I'm not
saying gift rapping, but I think that if you want
(08:16):
to make those moves, it's just better sometimes to get
that other guy out of the picture completely. Sod So
your quarterback, your your team can focus in on him
because there'll be guys in that locker room, Chris that
when things are, when it's a struggle or things on
going right, y're gonna say, why are we doing this?
We got a team that was almost in the super
(08:38):
Bowl and we still have a roster that's ready to win. Now,
why are we reverting to a young kid who's played
three games, started three games in three years? None of
it makes sense because you kept Jimmy G around because
you don't fully believe that that something's gonna happen. Just
cut Jimmy G. They could have cut him and moved
on and got a backup quarterback somebody else who's not
(09:01):
on that level. The thing is if the kid gets hurt.
He got hurt last year in two games, So what
if he gets hurt and he from Salon made this
point last year last week I thought it was a
good one. Is he was feeling in for you. He said, look,
players are going like if they start poorly, and you
said it because I brought it up to him, players
(09:21):
will start. You know, hey, Jimmy G. We know we
can win with him. He's like, players are gonna be
saying that anyway. If Jimmy G were to be cut
or had been cut, then't they really would have been like, yo,
y'all cut Jimmy G, who we know can get us
as far as we need to go at least to
the super Bowl for this, and now we got no
(09:45):
chance because this kid is not ready. So they're gonna
be feeling that way anyway. But if he gotn't produced,
it may he might. Look he's got physical tools. We
let me see. Let me ask you this, let me
ask you just your gut and we don't know. I'm
with you. I'm gonna let I'm gonna watch because Chris,
we are that practice, okay, we are, and we don't know.
And really, let's see how he does in the games.
(10:07):
We gotta we gotta really see him play. And when
once they it's different from when you're coming in every
so often or you're you know what I mean, like
they're putting you in. But now it's your team. The
film is all on you. They're watching your tendencies. They're
gonna try to make you do stuff that you haven't
been able to show one tape. My point is, what's
your gut? Just going in and how good is he
(10:29):
gonna be? Is this guy going to get them to
the playoffs this year? Do you have anything? They got
a great team as we know right Um, the NFC
is not as strong as it used to be just
a year ago, I mean, and so I do think
they will make the playoffs. Now will this kid be
(10:50):
the one to lead him there? We'll see. But you
they open up robe. They got the Bears, the Seahawks,
the Broncos, the Rams, the Panthers. They should be able
to win at least three of those games. Bear, Seahawks,
Panthers right for it. And that's really a good that's
a good time for him. We got six games, four
(11:12):
of them are very winnable and we're not giving up
to the Rams and Broncos. So that might be the
timeline where they say, okay, if he hasn't done it,
if we're not at least three and three and he's
not playing well, maybe they make a move. Then we'll see.

you were gone, but you didn't. You haven't had a
chance to weigh in what you think of Tom Brady's
eleven day vacation during training camp. And I'll tell you,
obviously I like Brady. You know that I didn't like this. Now. Look,
(11:57):
if it's something serious that he just really had to
deal with, fine, obviously I'm not gonna be critical of
that for him or any other player. But if it,
I mean that one report had it being a vacation
to the behind us. We don't know if that's true
or not, but if it was, if it was, I
(12:19):
mean he when he says he's forty five, stuff going on. Again,
If it's something serious, we get it. But everybody, you know,
everybody has to manage life, life, the curveballs that life
throws at you, particularly professional athletes. Right I think I
say divorce and all that, Right, I don't. I don't
buy any that it was something serious because Chris and
(12:41):
years going by, he's had issues with his mom and
he's just announced it. I'm doing I'm dealing with my
mom was having issues, and people respect that this was schedule.
Todd balls, the coach even said this was schedule coming in.
So you know, it sounded to me like a vacation
that that his wife had planned, do you know what
I mean? And was like terrible to me. That's what
(13:03):
I think. It can change their vacation, right. You know
what I'm saying, Come on, you all the money in
the world, they can do whatever they want exactly. And
to say, no, we're going on this vacation during training camp.
I don't give a damn whatever whatever. It ain't fair
to everybody else. You either have to be all in
or retire. We get it. That's why guys on forty
(13:25):
five Chris, right, that's why. Uh And if you want
to play it, then you need to do that. I
just think it's unfair to everybody else to want them
to be all in and then you're gonna question them
and you're on vacation during training camp. I think it's
most unfair to Todd Balls. It undercuts his authority. It does.
(13:47):
You didn't make all those years under Bill Belis, thank you,
you didn't do it under Bruce arians and get the job.
And I'm not saying it's racial, no, I'm just saying
it undercuts his already, right, right, you don't think dudes
are like yo you think Bill Belichick would have allowed
him to go on vacation during training camp. Chris, No,
(14:09):
not even close. And and and if it looked if
his wife was like, look, you can go play, but
this vacation we're going. I'm sorry. It's like if you
gotta buckle, don't play right. He's clearly she's not really
on board with you playing if she doesn't see like
on a vacation, this vacation at this time, especially when
(14:32):
you can change it anytime you want. They could go
anywhere on the planet. They can go off the planet
as much money as they have. Hey, they could go
on a trip to the moon. But ain't going during
training camp. Chris is like, you like like when you're
an NBA beat guy. This is the NBA season, baby,
I can't take a vacation. I can't take two weeks
(14:53):
off during basketball season when I come baseball. I couldn't do.
A bunch of our our friends, couples that we usually
hang out with, they went to Napa this June to
hang out. It was a jazz festival, you know, all
that wine country. And I couldn't go because it was
the NBA Finals and I need to first things first,
(15:16):
and I didn't even like ask if I could go.
You know, it was just like, no NBA Finals, super Bowl, Like,
how would that? How would that look Chris, You taken
off during the NBA Finals to go on vacation. No,
it would look terrible. It's like there's a few big
things you need to do, and you know in football
you get five months, six months whatever it is off, Well,
(15:42):
you can't do enough in though six months. It's terrible.
And I think, like you alluded to it earlier, and
I had said this while you were gone. I look,
Brady knows as much as anyone, maybe probably more than
almost all players how important this time is. Yep. And
so for him to take it off, I don't know how.
(16:04):
I just think I feel like this is a pure speculation.
I just feel like he's a little down because of
the injuries, and I think he's wondering how good they're
gonna be. Yeah, I don't think he's trying to play
for anything but Super Bowls at this point. Thanks for

(17:13):
Duke Volleyball team women's volleyball team playing at BYU and
Rachel Richardson, their only African American starter, was subject to
racial slurs from one fan who wasn't a student at
b YU every time she served, every time she served,
(17:35):
and afterwards when her god only when her godmother tweeted
that you know she was subjected to racial slurs every
time she served, and it became a story. That's when
by You responded, they have banned the fan from their
(17:56):
athletic venues on campus. Uh, they have said they have
a year role tolerance approach to this behavior. Now, Richardson
responded on Twitter today. She said no athlete, regardless of
their race, should ever be subject to such hostile conditions.
She said some other things, but they don't have a
(18:17):
zero tolerance approach to this behavior BYU. And I'm saying
that because you let it go on throughout the match,
if it was every time she served, and I am
like gon an assumption that because it was in a
gym and she's on the court and she heard it.
(18:41):
My assumption is that it was very It was loud
enough for tons of people to hear. Rob right, this
wasn't undoud people at the Big House. Okay, that's not
what this right? I mean, you let how do you
let that go on? How did no students say hey,
but you need to stop it? And if he didn't stop,
(19:03):
call security over there, point him out, Chris, point him
out that that guy right there is making racist taunts
or whatever you want to say, and he should be removed.
And the coach right then and there should say, if
you don't remove this guy or was this on their campus?
I'm sorry this was gonna be why I used camp. Yeah,
(19:27):
well I'm gonna pull the kids. You know, if this
guy's an removed, we're not going to continue with this gap.
So so which one of them, Richardson, addressed that rob
and here's what she said. Although the heckling, I mean
it's long. Eventually, the controlling me, I refused to allow
it to stop me from doing what I love to do.
And when I came to be why you you know
(19:48):
this game to do, which was to play volleyball, I
refused to allow those racist biggest to feel any degree
of satisfaction from thinking that their comments had gotten to me.
So I pushed through and finished the game. Therefore, in
behalf of my African American teammates and I, we do
not want to receive pity or be looked at as helpless.
We do not feel as though we are victims of
(20:09):
some tragic, unavoidable event. We're probable to be young African
American women, we are probably to be Dukes student athletes,
and we're probable to stand up against racism, Um, that's
a strong statement. But I agree with you that if
they had said, look, get him out of here, or
we're not playing anymore, I don't think that plays into
the victimhood narrative. I think you can do that from
(20:33):
a position of strength. I hear what she's saying, like, look,
we're gonna share, You're not getting to us, You're not
gonna stop us from being great athletes. But you can
do You still can say, look, we're not putting up
with it and either get him out of here or
we're done. We're not gonna entertain you. Uh. You know,
while this dude does it so different way Lebron has
(20:57):
had people they had him put up put out right,
you could say, well, why would Lebron let them know?
Because you shouldn't have to sit through that. Chris, You
just right, You shouldn't have to. It's not about them
stopping you or you're trying to prove a point. It's
inappropriate behavior. It shouldn't be tolerated in a public venue.
You want to go in your basement with your friends
(21:18):
and yell racist things that the TV set, Chris, do
your thing, right, do your thing when you come out
in the public We're not going to allow this to happen.
It's just that's that's how I look at it. So
I don't look at it as like, you know, you
crumbled and you let them get you know, get get
through to you. No, I don't. You shouldn't. It shouldn't
(21:38):
be tolerated. Yeah, it's just baffling to me that a
school again, I'm assuan, it was clear right if she
heard it, Rob, you can't there's no way A ton
of other people didn't hear right, I'm with you. I mean,
you know it's Jim. How many how many let that
go on? How many students go to watch volleyball? Chris?
(22:01):
I mean, no, thank you there. I mean that that
is unbelievable that this fan was not confronted, if not
right after the first time he said it, then certainly
the second time. I mean like like what, so, come on,
b Yu. They were forced into doing the right thing.
(22:23):
It shouldn't have taken all that um and they got
to do better next time. Shouldn't. Hopefully there's not a
next time, but
