Mike Sandel front of the show did a preseason survey
of eight anonymous executives previewing both the NFC and the AFC,
and there was something that was said about a certain
NFC team that was right up our alley.
Speaker 5 (06:05):

They ranked them in a power ranking system. Everybody assigned.
Hey I'm one, two, three, four, five, sixty seven. The
averages were as follows for the top three. Number one,
no surprise, the Philadelphia Eagles, number two, and a mild
surprise the Green Bay Packers.

That is a mild surprise.
Speaker 9 (06:22):
Number three, Yeah, number three, Rob Parker's Detroit Lions. Now,
them being number three is not much to sneeze that,
and you know, it is what it is. It's kind
of right where you'd expect they may or may not be.
Here's what is surprising, though. The reason why they fell
the number three in the power rankings is because one
anonymous executive had the Detroit Lions ranked as the eleventh

best team in the NFC.

Here's the rationale quote.

I refuse to believe they keep rolling after losing two

Maybe he beat him up when he was playing. Maybe
he beat him up in the streets. Maybe he stole
his girlfriend. Because there's no way you can put the

Detroit Lions eleventh in the NFC. You couldn't even put
them eleventh in the entire NFL. That doesn't make any sense.
So I'm convinced you voted for them. Now I digress.
Let me tell you why the Lions are going back
or have gone to the Super Bowl going back. They
should have win a couple of years ago so they

didn't make it. I would concede losing two coordinators. It's
a big deal. I'm not gonna ask nothing to sneeze
that that's a big deal. However, the culture center is there,
Dan Gamble Campbell is still there.
Speaker 5 (08:32):
Okay, the team is there.
Speaker 1 (08:34):
Offensively, they have probably better offensive weapons than just about
anybody in the league. They were the number one offense
in the NFL. Here's the caveat people forget about. They
were the number seven scoring defense. They bent, but they
ain't break. And they finally broke when they had too
many defensive players unhealthy and hurt. Well, they got most
of those back, they lost a couple, and they got

most importantly Aiden Hutchinson back arguably the MVP, yes, not defensive,
the MVP prior before getting injured. So you're looking at
the number one rushing game, a top two three rushing game.
You're looking at one of the better quarterbacks, and you're
also getting looking at a defense as good, and you're
looking at weapons and skilled players all over the place
who are young and in their prime. So to me
(09:17):
and the NFC is open. You got the Eagles, I'll
give you that. Their raigning champ. They deserve our respect.
Other than that, the NFC is wide open. It's not
like I gotta go through the three of the AFC, right,
I gotta beat the Bills.
Speaker 5 (09:28):
They gotta beat the Ravens. They gotta beat the Chiefs.
Speaker 1 (09:30):
You know, you get through the NFC, you give yourself
a chance to get to the super Bowl, and then
you got a shot once you're there.
Speaker 5 (09:36):
So that is why the Lions are going.
Speaker 1 (09:38):
They're mad at people like you and your vote, putting
disrespect on their name, and they're absolutely gonna come back
with the vengeance.
Speaker 6 (09:47):
Okay, so there was your public service announcement by a
Lions fan. Now I'll give you real analyst and analyst,
a real NFL analysts.
Speaker 5 (09:57):
That was not me.
Speaker 6 (10:00):
And I understand you keep holding on to this because
they disappoint you every year they were supposed to the
way they blew out the forty nine ers in the
first half, choked down that two years ago. Last year
they have a rookie quarterback at home nine and a
half point favorites. They were fifteen and two, nine and

a half point favorites at home and they lose. There's
no way that the Lions are going to do anything close.
The executive who was being honest knows how this league runs.
Dan Campbell's not He might be the front man. But
the reason that they turned into a better team was
the two coordinators who were really good at their job.
(10:42):
And Ben Johnson's loss, whether you want to agree or not,
is going to be huge for them. And here's the
other part that you talk about, Oh yeah, some defensive
players are coming back and this, and did they change
the quarterback because Jared Golf turned into Jared Tennis when
it came time for the biggest game of the.
Speaker 5 (11:01):
Year, the four turnovers.
Speaker 6 (11:03):
That's why the Rams got rid of him, despite him
taking the Rams to the Super Bowl. The reason the
Rams got rid of Jared Golf is because he turns
in efforts like that and moments like that where he melts.
The other part you're not talking about. This ain't the
same NFC North, it's better. The Packers are better, the

Bears are better. And in Minnesota, if they take a
step down, I don't know how far down they're gonna
go to. Still I have a good defense, they still
have good offensive weapons, and if JJ McCarthy does not
turn the ball over, they have a chance to still
win maybe ten games like they'll they'll drop a little bit,
but I don't think they're gonna fall off the map
because they have too many talented players.
Speaker 5 (11:45):
So when I look.
Speaker 6 (11:45):
At all these things, not only do I think the Lions,
you know, aren't going to the super Bowl like you
think they are, I think the Lions are gonna miss
the playoffs, and I think the Lions will fall backwards
and this will all come undone. They had a couple
of years they had their window. I think that this

is going to come undone and the Lions mis Remember,
you could win nine games and not make the playoffs,
or ten games in that division, So it ain't like
they gotta go six and eleven. They can win nine
or ten games and still not make the playoffs. That's
what I'm talking about. So don't be saying that, Rob
saying they're gonna win three games. That's not You could

still lose by winning ten games and not make the
postseason because of your division, because of the NFC and
some other teams.

So that's where I'm at.

Okay, but let me throw this at you a couple things,
and I hear you don't agree with you, but I
hear you. They were also the number one point differential team.
They were blowing good teams, middle teams, bad teams, AFC,
NFC in the division. Out the division, they were blowing
everybody out. They had one of the best home records.
And also we know how that home field advantage is

for them to me, it didn't.

Work against Washington. Jared Goff threw.

Too many interceptions point blank period and Jayden Daniels played
the game in his life flat out.

They lost, played the game is left because he was
set up by a bad quarterback and big moment and
they still almost.

Want to win.

That doesn't throw a freaking touchdown on their game. Ben
Johnson got carried away having the game in a in
a in a receiver's hand to throw a pass.

said and done, he'll be one of those guys who
just couldn't get you where you needed to go. And
then it'll be like, Okay, not only did the Rams
get rid of him, Okay, the Lions have seen enough
of it and it'll be the end of it.

I see the pathway for them to get to the
Super Bowl I do not, and I'm talking about I
was born in Montgomery, Alabama. I don't see how they
don't make the playoffs.

I do not see when they have all their weapons
and some back draft picks and somehow they're all of
a sudden gonna be out of the postseason. Not too

of and when I'm kind of disappointed, is that the NFL,
and I don't know if it's Michigan culture with all
our sports teams to never go out and do anything

big to make drastic improvements. When I found out the
Philadelphia Eagles were trying to throw everything at Michael Parson's
after they just reached the pinnacle, and we did nothing.
We did absolutely nothing. And on the other side of
the ball, I don't understand how anybody did not see
what happens when Aiden Hutchinson's double team and there is

no pass rush. I am literally scared of what's about
to happen this season. I fear we have turned into
the Cincinnati Bengals. I am more scared that the window
was closed than it is still there. You got everybody else,
everybody else has readjusted, retooled, and we did nothing. That's
staying pack.

Think of a time in Michigan sports history after ras

a broken leg, and that's Aiden Hutchinson. That's a problem

for me. They're not strong corner. They're great at safety,
They've got some problems on defense. And as I said

a very structured quarterback. If everything's working, he's really accurate
and he's really good. But when they're behind, he's not
a guy that you want bringing from behind. So they
got to stay on schedule. This team does not seem

to me as good as they were last year.

the playoffs, It's hard to find a weekness on this
football team. One of them was major. It was their

past rush. They one guy Rashaun Gary, nice player for
a first rounder in twenty nineteen, so they make the
trade for Parsons.

play left tackle, didn't work out. They moved him to guard.
They're not good at right tackle. Juwan Taylor because of

his contracts the only reason why they didn't cut him.
He's making over twenty million this season. He's the right tackle.
Jalen Moore comes over, he'll back up right and left tackle.
They believe they'll be better. Josh Shimmons, by the way,
he's come back from this torn totel at ten and
really well. The first run pick out of Ohio State.
So they got Hollywood brown back Worthy had a good
rookie season. They I'm told they want to expand and

go deep. They as long as they can protect because
they they know it internally, it was a disaster. They
can't play football like that. And the other thing is
Pacheco they're starting running back. Let's not forget he came
back from that that lake fracture. It was never the
same when he came back. So the other thing is
this is another team that's not very good at corner.
They got one good corner in Trent McDuffie, and that's
that's pretty much it. You can't win in this league

unless you're deep at corner and they're not. And that
does worry me.

Yeah, I mean defensively, that's what's kept them in the
game for the last couple of seasons. And just the
efficiency in the big time completions from Patrick Mahomes.

and there was something that was said about a certain

They ranked them in a power ranking system. Everybody assigned.
Hey I'm one, two, three, four, five, sixty seven. The
averages were as follows for the top three. Number one,

Number three, Yeah, number three, Rob Parker's Detroit Lions. Now,
them being number three is not much to sneeze that,

Here's what is surprising, though. The reason why they fell
the number three in the power rankings is because one
anonymous executive had the Detroit Lions ranked as the eleventh

Dan Gamble Campbell is still there.

Offensively, they have probably better offensive weapons than just about
anybody in the league. They were the number one offense
in the NFL. Here's the caveat people forget about. They
were the number seven scoring defense. They bent, but they

many defensive players unhealthy and hurt. Well, they got most
of those back, they lost a couple, and they got

most importantly Aiden Hutchinson back arguably the MVP, yes, not defensive,
the MVP prior before getting injured. So you're looking at
the number one rushing game, a top two three rushing game.
You're looking at one of the better quarterbacks, and you're
also getting looking at a defense as good, and you're
looking at weapons and skilled players all over the place
who are young and in their prime. So to me

and the NFC is open. You got the Eagles, I'll
give you that. Their raigning champ. They deserve our respect.
Other than that, the NFC is wide open. It's not
like I gotta go through the three of the AFC, right,
I gotta beat the Bills.

They gotta beat the Ravens. They gotta beat the Chiefs.

You know, you get through the NFC, you give yourself
a chance to get to the super Bowl, and then
you got a shot once you're there.

So that is why the Lions are going.

They're mad at people like you and your vote, putting
disrespect on their name, and they're absolutely gonna come back
with the vengeance.

no way that the Lions are going to do anything close.
The executive who was being honest knows how this league runs.

the reason that they turned into a better team was
the two coordinators who were really good at their job.

is going to be huge for them. And here's the
other part that you talk about, Oh yeah, some defensive
players are coming back and this, and did they change
the quarterback because Jared Golf turned into Jared Tennis when
it came time for the biggest game of the.

That's why the Rams got rid of him, despite him
taking the Rams to the Super Bowl. The reason the
Rams got rid of Jared Golf is because he turns
in efforts like that and moments like that where he melts.

same NFC North, it's better. The Packers are better, the

Bears are better. And in Minnesota, if they take a
step down, I don't know how far down they're gonna
go to. Still I have a good defense, they still
have good offensive weapons, and if JJ McCarthy does not
turn the ball over, they have a chance to still
win maybe ten games like they'll they'll drop a little bit,
but I don't think they're gonna fall off the map
because they have too many talented players.

At all these things, not only do I think the Lions,
you know, aren't going to the super Bowl like you
think they are, I think the Lions are gonna miss
the playoffs, and I think the Lions will fall backwards

you could win nine games and not make the playoffs,

they gotta go six and eleven. They can win nine

postseason because of your division, because of the NFC and
some other teams.

big to make drastic improvements. When I found out the
Philadelphia Eagles were trying to throw everything at Michael Parson's
after they just reached the pinnacle, and we did nothing.
We did absolutely nothing. And on the other side of
the ball, I don't understand how anybody did not see
what happens when Aiden Hutchinson's double team and there is

no pass rush. I am literally scared of what's about
to happen this season. I fear we have turned into
the Cincinnati Bengals. I am more scared that the window
was closed than it is still there. You got everybody else,

when you look at the situation, Philly lost five defensive starters.

pressure the quarterback on third down. So to me, without

Michael Parsons, it's going to be really, really tough now
week one and you're gonna see this on Sunday. It's
strange things that you expect to happen don't happen because
some teams are little bit farther. I agree with you
that it gets to be really weird, It really weird. Yes,

I understand what the GM Brad Holmes was talking about.
You got to be strong up in the middle.

I mean, they drafted Tilly Gwiams, a d tackle in
the first round. But bringing back Marcus Davenport has always hurt.
He's been a big disappointment as a former first round pick.
That's when the Saints traded up for him, and it
just never worked out. Why that brought Davenport back is
beyond me. They've got one quality pass strushers coming off
a broken leg, and that's Aiden Hutchinson. That's a problem

for me. They're not strong corner. They're great at safety,
They've got some problems on defense. And as I said
I when Rob brought it up with Jared Goff, he's
a very structured quarterback. If everything's working, he's really accurate
and he's really good. But when they're behind, he's not
a guy that you want bringing from behind. So they
got to stay on schedule. This team does not seem

to me as good as they were last year.

I'm wonder to hear about the Packers that's what I
was wondering.

Packers now Packers. Yeah, all right, so here here's the thing.
Here's what I like about the Packers. Top three NFL roster. Okay, phenomenal,
really good in the regular season. Matt LeFleur is Lamar
Jackson of head coaches. Can't win in the playoffs, just
doesn't do well. Whatever reason they don't do well in
the playoffs, It's hard to find a weekness on this
football team. One of them was major. It was their

past rush. They one guy Rashaun Gary, nice player for
a first rounder in twenty nineteen, so they make the
trade for Parsons.

They're not very good.

They're they're average, are below average, line packers outstanding de tackle,
really good. This is a good team. They're really well coached. Offensively,

gonna we're gonna see against the trait where he's at
offensive line. They're they're fine, they're not special, but they're

they're coach. Well, now I'll tell you what they got
a real problem. Josh Shacobs gets hurt.

Patrick Mahomes throws three yards of pass. It's just not

the same to me. And they won a lot of
games last year, but when they played a really good
team in Florida, they got destroyed.

left tackles last season. The last one got housed is
Joe Toney. He got abused in the Super Bowl. He's
not a left tackle, he's a guard. He wound up
getting traded to the Bears. So they're going to reshape

play left tackle, didn't work out. They moved him to guard.
They're not good at right tackle. Juwan Taylor because of

his contracts the only reason why they didn't cut him.
He's making over twenty million this season. He's the right tackle.
Jalen Moore comes over, he'll back up right and left tackle.
They believe they'll be better. Josh Shimmons, by the way,
he's come back from this torn totel at ten and
really well. The first run pick out of Ohio State.
So they got Hollywood brown back Worthy had a good
rookie season. They I'm told they want to expand and

go deep. They as long as they can protect because
they they know it internally, it was a disaster. They
can't play football like that. And the other thing is

But they could have lost that game. So I just
think the games are closer.

About like the first game of the year, even after
we won the Super Bowl.

That's what I need to do. Eagles are winning today.
There are concerns though for the Eagles. They've lost some players.
We haven't talked about their defensive defensively, they lost some pieces.
The offensive line could be a little shooketh as well.

I expect him to win and they get I expected
to win by by good seven, but I think it'll
be a little bit more competitive.

Uh then maybe people give it, but the Eagles should
come out. They'll come out and be fine.

I'm interested to see Saquon Barkley throughout the season more
long term, if he has another phenomenal year like that,
or if there's a nice drop off, because that year
was incredible. They had a chance to become an all
time leading rusher, and I will be interested to see
if that offensive line can get him back to just
about what he was last year.

That'd be interesting to see to me. And no way
is gonna have that year, That's what I mean, Like
that was on that. I just can't see that out.

And I think people are gonna go all out and say,
all right, dang it, you're gonna have to just air
it out. And I know that that that uh Jalen
Hurts has done it from time to time, but that
would be the game plan, stop him, dang it.
