(00:56):
Mark Stein, Fox Sports Radio, NBA Inside, one of the
best in the business, will join us at the bottom
of the hour.

Speaker 3 (01:06):
But until then, let's talk Clippers.

Speaker 4 (01:08):
Rob.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
Now, they had a big three, one of the most
ballyhooed big threes or most decorated big threes in the league.
James harden An MVP, Kawhi Leonard, a two time champion,
and Paul George, who looks like he's on his way

(01:30):
to a Hall of Fame induction later, you know, when
he's done playing.

Speaker 3 (01:36):
And now it is no more.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
Paul George goes to the Philadelphia seventy six ers, Rob,
because he was seeking the four year max deal from
the Clippers, they were only willing to give him three years,
same deal they gave Kawhi Leonard, which was three years,
one hundred and fifty two million. And Paul George got

(01:57):
more from Philly. They gave him four years about two
hundred and twelve million. And so he now joins another
fills out another big three in Philadelphia. We'll get to
that later with Joe LMB and tyresee MAXI So, Rob,
what do you think of the decision that Paul George
and the Clippers in this instance made.

Speaker 5 (02:19):
Bravo to the Clippers, Bravo.

Speaker 4 (02:23):
I mean I told you before, I just couldn't do
it with Paul George. Once you made the commitment to Kawhi,
you could only keep one of those guys. You just
can't do it again, really, yep. And I just think
the three years they offered them the same thing that
they gave Kawhi. There was an opportunity for him sign
and he didn't want to be there. Obviously, he took
more money, and I'm not mad at him. If you

(02:44):
want to go to Philadelphia and go there and try
to win a championship there, that's fine. But if I'm
the Clippers, you can't let the can't let everybody run
your organization. You have perimeters, you have parameters, Chris, that
you want to work inside of. They kept James Harden,
but he got two years, seventy million dollars and they

(03:06):
had some of the players around.

Speaker 5 (03:07):
That's a great deal, I mean, right, like that that's workable.

Speaker 4 (03:11):
Right, that's workable, and not on a hook for James
Harden for like two hundred million dollars or something crazy.

Speaker 5 (03:17):
That's workable, and you have a player of that ILK.

Speaker 4 (03:21):
So once they realized they could get hardened, you know
what I mean, and not have to break the bank
to keep him around, I think I.

Speaker 5 (03:29):
Don't have an issue with it.

Speaker 4 (03:30):
I know people will look and I'm not trying to
say Paul George isn't a.

Speaker 5 (03:35):
Good player, Chris. He's a really good player.

Speaker 4 (03:37):
Right, But there comes limits and expectations, and mostly they've
been disappointing and I'm not blaming him only. It's just
been a lot with the organization. But I think they
had a number and if he wanted to stay there
and be a part of it, he could. This is
his hometown, they got the new arena. None of that

(03:59):
mattered to him. He just wanted to get cashed out
and so Philly came with more money. And that's what
free agency is all about. But I don't have a
problem with the I don't think Paul George being there
not being there.

Speaker 5 (04:10):
Is going to be the difference of them winning.

Speaker 4 (04:12):
Because well, they not winning without him. Yeah, But I
mean they weren't winning with him, That's what I'm saying.
But that's my point that they weren't gonna win. So
so yeah.

Speaker 1 (04:23):
I hear that the right for them at this moment
in time. And I think this is why you do
the James Harden deal. Rob.

Speaker 3 (04:33):
It's about staying relevant. Right. They're going into a new arena.

Speaker 5 (04:37):
A billion dollar tickets.

Speaker 4 (04:39):
But but they they want to make the playoffs.

Speaker 3 (04:44):
They got a shot. You know. The West obviously is
incredibly deep.

Speaker 1 (04:47):
I think there's really only two teams that are out
of it, and that's Utah and Portland. Everybody else is
going to be fighting for a playoff spot and they'll
be one.

Speaker 3 (04:57):
Of those teams.

Speaker 1 (04:59):
But I've I feel you on that, and I'll say this,
I've said it once, I'll say it again.

Speaker 5 (05:03):
Rob.

Speaker 4 (05:05):
To me, the mistake was keeping Kawhi. He's the guy
I would have let walk.

Speaker 3 (05:12):
Now.

Speaker 1 (05:12):
I think he's better overall. You know, he's a better
player than Paul George, but he's also more they're both
injury prone, but he's more so than Paul George.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
And we've seen it, Rob.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
The last two years he played in the regular season,
they managed him. It was like, Okay, here he is,
he's ready, and then come playoff time and he misses
most of the postseason. They've played eleven playoff games the
last two years. He's played four of them. And so
that was the mistake. I thought when they signed him

(05:47):
last year last season and congrats to his representation, my goodness,
they did a great job. But I thought from that
point on it was like, man, I mean, you've signed
locked up Kawhi. Kinda need to stay the course and
be all in, and I feel you. I think they'd
be better with Paul George. But honestly, maybe only slightly better,

(06:11):
and so you bring back Harden, You've got Kawhi. Derek
Jones Junior is there, who we know played with Dallas,
helped them get to the finals. They still have Ivica Zubot,
so they have enough where there's for Clippers fans, there's
some hope that maybe they make it to the playoffs.

Speaker 3 (06:31):
But with George, and I agree with you, I don't
think they would have won it.

Speaker 1 (06:37):
But with Paul, George, Kawhi and Harden, there was at
least a chance. I guess that if for goodness sake,
they stayed healthy, that they'd have a chance to get
out of the West. And now that chance is gone.
Like so now you know you're hoping for the playoffs.

Speaker 3 (06:59):
And you're not. You're not making a run. I don't care.

Speaker 1 (07:03):
This team right now is not making a run deep
in those playoffs.

Speaker 3 (07:07):
But you know they got a shot to make it. Rob.

Speaker 1 (07:09):
You know, there's talk also about Westbrook going to Denver,
about them trading Westbrook to Denver, and Joki wants.

Speaker 3 (07:19):
So that would be interesting.

Speaker 5 (07:21):
That would be wow.

Speaker 3 (07:23):
I like I like him off the bench there.

Speaker 1 (07:25):
I can't imagine that they're going starting Westbrook, but I
like him to bring his energy off the bench.

Speaker 3 (07:32):
For Paul George.

Speaker 6 (07:33):
Rob.

Speaker 1 (07:33):
Look, Philly, I uh, I understand the move, Rob. They're
sitting there with sixty million dollars and really no one
to give it to, so they go get Paul George.

Speaker 3 (07:47):
I think.

Speaker 1 (07:50):
I'm not picking Philly to win the East. I think
the pressure.

Speaker 3 (07:54):
Is on Joe LMB.

Speaker 1 (07:55):
I mean, Robb, he's had some good but he's had
James Harden, m Tyres Mack. Now he's got Tyre's MAXI
and Paul George MB needs to step up. But I
just right now, I think even in the East, Philly
will have a shot if healthy. I don't think they'll
be fully healthy. That doesn't mean MB might not play

(08:17):
in the playoffs, but it'll just mean he'll be banged
up and playing on one leg or whatever. But I
still like Boston better than Philly, and I like the
Knicks better than Philly because of their depth.

Speaker 5 (08:29):
Wow.

Speaker 3 (08:30):
Yeah, I like the Knicks getting Michale Bridges.

Speaker 1 (08:33):
You know that happened last week while you were gone,
And their depth is is good.

Speaker 3 (08:38):
I know they hate losing Isaiah Hartenstein, but I think
they'll be okay. But you know, on paper, I love Philly.

Speaker 1 (08:45):
But I just Paul George kind of to your point,
is injury pro He missed the whole playoffs a couple
of years ago, and he's almost as injury prone as
Kawhi is.

Speaker 4 (08:56):
Yeah, it's a shame because he's a talented player and
if he could just stay healthy, Chris, but it just not.
It doesn't seem to be always the case. Uh, And
you can't count on him, and then he's had some
duds as well. I don't know, it's just he's he's
as you say, they they need him to win. But

(09:19):
but but they weren't gonna win. So what's the difference.
I mean, that's really what it comes down to.

Speaker 1 (09:24):
Yeah, and I think, like I said, I think they
can still make the playoffs. Possibly without him, they might
miss because they definitely are less talented than they were.
But Rob, they were exasperating, and we're gonna talk about them.

Speaker 3 (09:38):
And it's it's interesting because.

Speaker 1 (09:41):
The same thing that failled the Brooklyn Nets, who both
you and I liked, felled the Clippers.

Speaker 3 (09:50):
And I don't I don't blame the Clippers for going
out and Clippers everything that they could do, Chris. That
was a great movie.

Speaker 5 (09:57):
They did a great thing. They put together a tremendous team.

Speaker 4 (09:59):
If that team could have just stayed healthy, right really
for a couple if they had a healthy run for
three years, they would have a championship.

Speaker 5 (10:06):
I don't know they doubt.

Speaker 1 (10:07):
It, they I mean maybe not, but they would have
been right. They had a great shot. I mean, I
you know, you never know if they're gonna win it.

Speaker 4 (10:14):
But I'm saying they run, you know what I mean,
like not a one year shot, but if they stayed
healthy for three years, they would have had a shot
at it.

Speaker 5 (10:23):
I think they would have won a championship.

Speaker 3 (10:24):
Really.

Speaker 1 (10:25):
The only year they had that legitimate chance was twenty
twenty bubble loss, and that was an odd situation because
of the bubble, but still they dropped. They were up
three to one on Denver, would have gotten the Lakers,
you know, in the in the Conference finals, but they
blew a three to one lead, which was terrible.

Speaker 3 (10:46):
And neither Kawhi or Paul George.

Speaker 1 (10:48):
Showed up in that game, right, shouldn't have even got
to a game seven. But Kawhi was six for twenty two,
George was four for sixteen. Awful in games. Yeah, and
that was that was their chance. It turned out. You
didn't know it at the time, but that really robbed
was their last chance to really you know, when they
were both healthy for the bulk of the season and

(11:09):
the playoffs. And yeah, it's really similar to Brooklyn where
you had a championship caliber roster but injuries just.

Speaker 4 (11:19):
Year that Milwaukee won the championship, Chris, I mean, that
was that right there. Uh, Durant wins it if his
foot's not on the line. The Bucks never went. I mean,
it's it's unbelievable. And that was with the injuries.

Speaker 1 (11:31):
I was gonna say, Rob, if hard thinking about that
or Kyrie, the ones out, the others out, if they were.

Speaker 4 (11:40):
Healthy, they would have won a championship, that they would
have beat Milwaukee.

Speaker 3 (11:45):
Without them right right.

Speaker 1 (11:47):
And Harden was on one leg you know at that
that when that series ended.

Speaker 3 (11:52):
So I agree with you, and it's just, you know,
it's unfortunate.

Speaker 1 (11:56):
And I tell you what, with the NBA this year, Rob,
this upcoming season, they really I hope and I'll probably
start talking to somebody about and see see what they're thinking.
But they need to really keep an eye on these injuries,
Rob and see if they have a similar injury problem
this year and these playoffs as they had last year,

(12:20):
they gonna have to try to you know, like they
have to do something. And I'm not saying I have
the answer, but you cannot have your playoffs determine.

Speaker 3 (12:32):
Were there always We've talked about it before, Rob, there
always have been injuries sometimes in the finals. Right.

Speaker 1 (12:39):
It defined this season and particularly these playoffs, it really did,
and you cannot have that happening for you know, extended years.
So uh yeah, the Clippers. Look, they they went for it.
It didn't work. And it's interesting because now Rob the

(13:00):
kind of in that in between space, right, They're not
gonna be horrible, They're not gonna be great. They might
be good enough to get in the playoffs maybe, or
they might be you know, bad enough just to miss
the playoffs but not get a high lottery pick. So
it's gonna be interesting to see. But I just think
they made the wrong decision. I would rather have George

(13:23):
than Kawhi. Not like I said, I think Kawhi is
a better player, but he's just more injury prone and
less dependable.

Speaker 4 (13:30):
So yeah, both are and Kawhi played all year, which
was weird, and then there he goes got hurt in the.

Speaker 1 (13:37):
Play, right, It's just like I mean, you thought his
body just doesn't seem to be able to with staying
eighty plus games, all right? Eight seven seven ninety nine
on Fox Paul George to these Sixers, do they.

Speaker 3 (13:52):
Become the best team in the East?

Speaker 1 (13:54):
I got them third right now, We'll see what Milwaukee
does if anything, But I am I am not sold
on the Sixers. They're gonna have to fill out that roster,
get more depth. I do like Kelly Ubray being back,
so they're gonna be dangerous, but I'm not convinced they'll
be able to stay healthy.

Speaker 3 (14:13):
What are your thoughts on the Sixers and the Clippers?

All Right with the Odd Couple live from the Tirereck
dot Com Studios eight seven, seven ninety nine on Fox,
You're turning the way in Paul George goes to the
Sixers Clippers basically announcing we're no longer contender and now
the Sixers trying to make their move in the East.

(15:27):
What are your thoughts on this move by Paul George?

Speaker 4 (15:31):
All right, let's kick it off with Chili Chim in Atlanta.
You're up first, Chimp, Tim. What's up, buddy?

Speaker 9 (15:40):
What's up?

Speaker 6 (15:41):
Bribe?

Speaker 9 (15:41):
I missed you last week? Charlie Chris had Charlie wis
I mean?

Speaker 5 (15:46):
Oh my, Charlie?

Speaker 3 (15:48):
Good? What's up man?

Speaker 5 (15:52):
How you doing funny?

Speaker 9 (15:53):
I'm doing good man. But check this out very for sick,
so it's like Paul George and you guys just play.
So Paul George is like that Jack of Spade, right, like,
you know, you got that partner that counts him as
a book and it's a possibility. But every time you
throw that the somebody throw a king at this. So
it's always a possible, but it never really was. He's

(16:16):
like that Jack of Spades man. And and that's all
the Clippers had. They had one little Joker and Kawhi Lennon,
and then they had two low spades and James Hard
and Paul George and this all feelings got the same thing.
You got one Joker and Joel Embiid if he's healthy,
and then they just low Spades man. I don't think
he's gonna go anywhere.

Speaker 1 (16:37):
MBD is kind of like an ace, just because you know,
with his injury problems. By the way, last time I
was at the NBA All Star Game, I won the
Spades tournament.

Speaker 4 (16:51):
I remember, No, now, that's when Chris ditched me at
that stay.

Speaker 3 (16:56):
Well, we hung out.

Speaker 1 (16:57):
At the Jordan party and then yeah, I had a partner,
a different partner for them.

Speaker 5 (17:03):
Chris Ditchbi. I was supposed to be with his partner
and remember that.

Speaker 1 (17:06):
Beat Kyle Lowry, beat Wade and got real union.

Speaker 3 (17:10):
We took them all out.

Speaker 5 (17:11):
Man.

Speaker 4 (17:11):
Yeah, all right, Adrian, Adrian in Riverside, California.

Speaker 5 (17:16):
You're on the odd couple of Fox Sportsuadio. What's up?

Speaker 6 (17:20):
Hey, what's up guys? Thanks for taking my call?

Speaker 5 (17:22):
Yes, yeah, no problem.

Speaker 6 (17:24):
If I was a Clipper fan, I would be furious.
Just not so much what we lost, but what I'm
I'm sorry what what they lost, but what they gave
up to get him, you know, Sta MVP Conversation five.

Speaker 5 (17:41):
Yeah, they went walk out the door.

Speaker 3 (17:44):
They went for it. I mean, look, they didn't know.

Speaker 1 (17:49):
I mean Kawhi obviously had been a little banged up,
but he had just led Toronto to a championship.

Speaker 3 (17:55):
Paul George is a very good player. I mean they
had a squad, I get it.

Speaker 1 (18:01):
They gave up a ton and in hindsight it looks bad,
but at the moment, I mean, I can't they made
they went for it. I can't blame him. These guys
just couldn't stay healthy.

Speaker 4 (18:14):
Yeah, it's a shame because they went for Chris, and
rightfully so, they thought that they had when they won
the Kawhi sweeps. Thinks you remember he could have gone
to the Lakers, Yeah, and played in the same building,
same amount of money, had a better shot.

Speaker 5 (18:28):
Ad was already there.

Speaker 4 (18:29):
Lebron seriously would have been good for him because he
wouldn't have had you know, as much wearing Terry wouldn't
have had to do it right. Yeah, Andre and Massachusetts,
you're on the odd couple of Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 10 (18:43):
Dray, what's going on? Look, this talk of a big
three in Philadelphia is a little bit premature. They better
make sure that they have all the knee bracess bandages
and raps for both of those knees on Joel Embiid
and Paul George to get them through the regular seat. Secondarily,
I think the power of the engine behind Philadelphia right

(19:04):
now is Tyreese Maxi. He's a young lion that's coming
into his own, coming from the Kentucky Kentucky tradition, excuse me,
like a d' aaron box or even a Shay Gillias Alexander,
where if you nurture him, he's going to be your
guard of the future. Kind of power this team. So,
I think, just in terms of the hierarchy, that's they
got to get streat Joel Embiid, you are not the
engine anymore as far as I'm concerned, because you've never

(19:26):
been healthy coming out of Kansas and you're not going
to get more healthy later on in your career. So
Tyree's MAXI he's the one destroyed. It's going to be
the stir in the drink. First of ball, because he's
going to be on the court, night in, the night out,
and second up like he's just he's Paul George's is
towards the end. Joel Embiid for as talented.

Speaker 1 (19:42):
Not that close because they just gave him four years
max money.

Speaker 10 (19:47):
And so that's your point ahead your point, Chris, All
I'm saying is that the Clippers they went big game
hunting with Steve Balmer as their owner and you know,
Jerry West running the show, and they just it just
didn't work out because they were never they weren't healthy.
From their standpoint, they have a huge hole in terms
of Jerry West not being there to make the moves
for the future because from the Clipper standpoint, they gave

(20:09):
Blake Griffin that big contract and what did Jerry West do.
He moved his behind right out of.

Speaker 9 (20:13):
There to reform.

Speaker 10 (20:14):
So given Kawhi deal is not that, it doesn't mean
he's going to be there. You can move who's.

Speaker 3 (20:18):
Trading for Kawhi?

Speaker 1 (20:20):
I mean, really, he can't stay healthy and look and
nothing's impossible because we've seen all types of contracts move.

Speaker 3 (20:27):
But I'm not interested in Kawhi. I'm sorry. He's just
he's great, but he's hurt too much, so that that's
the issue there.

Speaker 1 (20:38):
And I robbed when MAXI, who I like a lot,
he did look like a dog against the Knicks. I mean,
dawg like he's got it. But Rob, you know that
you never know until the guy's on that big stage.
Tracy McGrady, and I think McGrady gets a bad rap
because he never won a playoff series, but he was

(21:00):
a monster in some of his first playoffs, and I
remember thinking, oh, even though they lost, I remember thinking,
this boy got it. First series, Rob against Orlando, he
averaged thirty four points, you know, eight assists, six rebounds.
Next year thirty one points against it, but never was

(21:22):
able to get a team over the hump.

Speaker 3 (21:24):
And so MAXI looks like he's got it, but we have.

Speaker 1 (21:28):
To see him in those bigger moments to really know
for sure, and then there are questions about not only
Paul George and mbid being healthy, but mentally being able
to bring it.

Speaker 3 (21:40):
To the level that you need to win a championship.

Speaker 2 (21:42):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Odd Couple

Mark? Old Couple?

Speaker 5 (22:16):
Every day? Every day.

Speaker 7 (22:18):
I'm feeling it today, guys, I'm feeling it. Thirty thirty first,
NBA Free Agents thirty first.

Speaker 3 (22:26):
Better you than me, man?

Speaker 7 (22:28):
Those days to carry me either, man.

Speaker 4 (22:32):
I mean, there you go. That's earning money. People have
no idea that I'm not saying when you're not in
bed with all the agents, I'm just saying, you.

Speaker 7 (22:40):
Know what I mean, I'm not even in the same hotel.

Speaker 3 (22:43):
I know.

Speaker 4 (22:44):
I'm just saying it's harder when you got to actually,
you know, try to break news.

Speaker 3 (22:49):
Now, mark your your partner.

Speaker 1 (22:51):
Chris Haynes, he reported, we could get there so much
to get to but that the Warriors, who we know
lost Klay Thompson, that they could have gotten Zach Levine
for Andrew Wiggins or Chris Paul or maybe both.

Speaker 3 (23:04):
But I thought that was a good move for the Warriors. Wiggins.

Speaker 1 (23:08):
Look, maybe they think he's gonna have a bounce back
year offensively, But what do you think led them to
that decision? You know, if they could have had Levine, well.

Speaker 7 (23:19):
I think there were discussions. I think that's what Chris reported.
How far those discussions actually got, how close they actually
got to a deal. I don't know that it was
close enough to where it was an option that the
Warriors were taking. I think there were trades that were
far higher on their board. And I actually reported it

(23:41):
the previous Monday, got a can keep my days straight now,
But it was last bigly a week ago. The Warriors
were trying to trade for Paul George and they when
they had Chris Paul's contract still on their books, that
was really their focus. You've centered they've tried to get
into the mix for lower marketing in Utah. It's not

(24:01):
clear yet if Utah is willing to trade marketing. They've
been willing to listen, are they actually willing to trade him?
You know, we'll see how far that gets. But the Warriors,
before losing Klay Thompson, they spent a good week before
and after the draft finan see what they could get
done with that Chris Paul contract. And I think when

(24:22):
it comes to Levine, they just looked at it and said,
you're taking on so much money, and that's that's the
territory they're trying to get out of. You've seen the
Clippers do the same thing, these teams with insanely high payroll. So,
I mean, look, Chicago wants to trade Zach Levine, but
they're going to have to attach assets to him to
get it done, whether that's future draft capital or other

(24:45):
players in the deal. And the Bulls just haven't been
able to find. I mean, the Bulls have been looking
for a Zach Lavine trade market since before Thanksgiving that
long ago.

Speaker 4 (24:57):
Wow, let me ask you should we look could Clay
picking the Mavericks over the Lakers and should we read
into that anything? I mean, the Lakers support reportedly offered
them more money, but he chose to go to the
state with where you live with the state income tax,
which I get, and that's a bonus. But his dad

(25:18):
has a history with the Lakers. His dad does the radio.
You know what I mean, there's a lot there, Los Angeles.

Speaker 7 (25:24):
Are you surprised, I'm actually not surprised. I mean, look,
the Lakers did come into this late, and they went
after him hard. And when Lebron James gets on the
phone to personally recruit recruit you, I'm not going to
sit here and pretend like that didn't make the Mavericks nervous.
But I was actually supposed to come on the show
late Friday night, right and I graciously had to withdraw myself.

(25:49):
And the reason was I was putting together my first
story on this that I had gotten when that when
when Clay was going to become a free agent, that
there was going to be serious interest between him and
the MAVs. I mean, he became Dallas's number one priority,
and I think, look, we haven't heard from Clay yet,
but I think the way he thought this was his

(26:11):
best chance to compete for a championship. And again, I
don't want to speak for him, but from covering him
for a long time, and my read of the situation,
he wants to stay in the West and show the
Warriors that he can still play and still be part
of a team that's intending for a championship, and I
think the team that just went to the NBA Finals,

(26:33):
and that's guaranteeing him a spot in the starting lineup
and guaranteeing him the chance to play off of Luka
Doncic and Kyrie Irving. I think all that added up
to a really strong pitch from the MAVs. And look, yes,
Lebron called him. The Lakers went hard after him. The
Lakers and the MAVs were the two teams that got

(26:54):
extensive face to face meetings with Clay on Sunday night.
But Rompson played with Kyrie Irving on the twenty fourteen
national team at the World Cup in Spain the twenty
sixteen Olympics. They have a history too, so the Mavericks
had their own play contemporary to assist in the recruiting effort.

(27:16):
But look saying all that, even though since last Friday,
I've certainly thought that there was a good chance this
could happen, I'm still stunned to not see him as
a Warrior anymore.

Speaker 3 (27:29):
I was.

Speaker 7 (27:32):
I was so lucky in my last three years at
ESPN to basically be embedded with these guys as they started,
as they became a championship team that went to five
straight finals and won three titles. And I just I'm
a basketball romantic. I wanted these guys to stay together
for their whole career. I cannot. I can't believe that

(27:57):
Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Clay Thompson no longer a trio.
It's going to take a long time for that to
think in even though he's coming to the city where
I live and go to all I.

Speaker 4 (28:07):
Kind of said that to Chris earlier, like like that there.
I know a lot of people move around, and Michael
Jordan finished his career, but there are certain teams and
players I look at and think. I always thought Tom
Brady should have played his whole career and with the Patriots.
Derek Gida played all twenty years with the Yankees, you
know what I mean. I do look at that, and
I thought those three would stay together, you know what

(28:29):
I mean, and going together and kind of come out together.

Speaker 7 (28:32):
So Mark I covered pretty much every dribble of Dirk
Dobitski's career from very close range. And I always said that,
yet the only one one championship is a player, but
staying his whole career. I look at that as like
another championship on his resume. Reggie Miller the same thing. Okay,
the Pacers didn't win it all, but it is so

(28:54):
meaningful when you can stay in one place, especially in
today's NBA where everybody moving around. But let's face it,
this was largely Clay Thompson's choice, right. The Warriors offered
him a two year extension before last season, worth nearly
fifty million. He felt disrespected by that because it was
half of what the Warriors offered Draymond Green. They offered

(29:16):
him even less. Now he chose to leave. He left
on his own accord. He didn't want to be there anymore.
So it was his call in the.

Speaker 3 (29:23):
End, before you go, Mark Denver.

Speaker 1 (29:26):
Now they've lost Reggie Jackson and Kentavious car Will Pope
and obviously didn't get you know, very far in the
playoffs last year.

Speaker 3 (29:35):
So what do you think the future holds from them?

Speaker 1 (29:39):
And are there any moves out there where they can
add to their depths, which was a problem this year.

Speaker 7 (29:45):
There's been a lot of chatter today that there's mutual
interests both from Denver and from Russell Westbrook in the
Nuggets pursuing a trade that brings Westbrook to the Clippers.
The Clippers want.

Speaker 9 (29:58):
To move Westbrook.

Speaker 7 (29:59):
Westbrook picked up up his four million dollar player option
for next season, but that's because there just hasn't been
anything out there for him in free agency. So is
there a chance that that deal gets done. Yes, but
that's a small move. I mean, Denfer has now lost
in consecutive off seasons Bruce Brown and Contavious Callwell, pope

(30:20):
with no compensations. They're going to resign Jamal Murray to
a big contract extension. But yeah, you have to wonder.
And I don't know that we'll ever get the candor
from Jokicic on this because coming to the media to
share his innermost thoughts is not something.

Speaker 6 (30:35):
We usually get.

Speaker 7 (30:37):
But I would love to know what he's thinking, because
you're absolutely right. I mean, these are huge losses to lose.
I mean they lost Jeff Green and Reggie Jackson as well,
but Bruce Brown and Contavious Callwell pope and not being
able to replace either one, to see them both leave
without compensation.

Speaker 2 (30:55):
That is right.

Speaker 4 (30:55):
But you know what makes it feels good is that
they did win a championship, So you know what I mean,
Like if they would have lost and you were still
in the hunt without winning, you could kind of live
with it.

Speaker 7 (31:05):
I know they won one, and they've been around, they've
been in the NBA for about fifty something years, and
you know they they hadn't won one before. Okay, yes
they won one, but I don't know if he satisfied
with one.

Speaker 5 (31:20):
No, no, no, not.

Speaker 4 (31:22):
But gods don't ever win though, is all I'm just saying.
You know what I mean, Like, I bet Michael Malone's
not happy.

Speaker 7 (31:28):
No, I mean again, he's another guy, and you know
what we might we might get his candid thoughts.

Speaker 1 (31:34):
Right, all right, that's our man, Mark Stein, great stuff, brother,
Go get some rest, go.

Speaker 7 (31:40):
On vacation someday, someday, not yet.

Speaker 3 (31:44):
All right, man, Later.

Speaker 1 (31:47):
More, our couple come in your way. The Boston Celtics

Rob Celtics of course hang banner number eighteen a couple

(32:32):
of weeks ago, and now they are up for sale
and a lot of.

Speaker 3 (32:38):
People are wondering why. I'm not wondering why. Rob. You
know you've covered pro sports even longer than me.

Speaker 1 (32:45):
You know that on a yearly basis, a lot of
pro teams lose money on a an annual basis. Not all,
but there are a lot of years where you lose
some money. But the benefit or the reason someone buys

(33:05):
a sports team.

Speaker 3 (33:06):
In addition to wanting to be in the mix, right,
you want to be heightened.

Speaker 4 (33:10):
But it heightens your your profile no matter what your
business you're read like.

Speaker 1 (33:15):
It just get yeah, no doubt. But financially, Rob, the
reason you buy a team is the appreciation. It's not
about making a bunch of money on a yearly basis.
It is about the appreciation of the franchise. And by
the time you sell it, man, your money double triple.

Speaker 3 (33:34):
Forget that.

Speaker 1 (33:35):
Check this out with Gross Back and Steve Pagan, Luke, Pagan, Luca.
I hope I said it right, all right, pag Luccia,
I know Steve, but no know how to say his name. Great,
but they bought the team Rob in two thousand and
two for three hundred and sixty million dollars three hundred

(33:58):
and sixty million, and that's only twenty two years ago.

Speaker 3 (34:02):
Guess what the Celtics are valued at today?

Speaker 5 (34:04):
How much? What's your guests? Three billion?

Speaker 3 (34:08):
Four point seven billion.

Speaker 1 (34:11):
So they in twenty two years their money went from
they made four point three billion dollars.

Speaker 4 (34:21):
It ain't the New York Giants for five hundred dollars
in nineteen thirty whatever it is.

Speaker 1 (34:26):
But Chris, so I get ribbed while they selling because
here's the other thing. Remember now they've got the Apron
and the second Apron and all that. The Celtics now
they just signed Jason Tatum to the biggest contract, and
then I'd.

Speaker 4 (34:40):
Be like, yeah, that's good. They let the other guys
pay it ride. Two guys paking seventy million dollars.

Speaker 1 (34:45):
Seven hundred million, right, almost two guys making it yeah
over six about six hundred million.

Speaker 6 (34:51):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (34:52):
Then they just paid Derek White one hundred and twenty
five million.

Speaker 4 (34:55):
Dude, you got to get out the hot Irons, hot
Chris right now.

Speaker 5 (34:58):
They just won a championship. Dude.

Speaker 4 (35:01):
We just saw Mark Cuban bowout, We saw Michael Jordan
bow out. I mean, make your investment, make your money now.

Speaker 1 (35:10):
Look, you leave it in there, you're gonna make more money.
But I think Rob with the Celtics, not this year,
but next season, when you count their payroll and the
taxes they'll have to pay by being in the eight
second apron and all that.

Speaker 3 (35:27):
It will be about four hundred and fifty million dollars.

Speaker 4 (35:30):
If you're an owner who's gonna take that team, you
gotta look at that and go.

Speaker 3 (35:33):
Look right, because you have to pay that yearly.

Speaker 10 (35:35):
Right.

Speaker 3 (35:35):
I set up for up.

Speaker 5 (35:38):
Tax big.

Speaker 1 (35:39):
I think they're just tired of paying that out on
an annual basis.

Speaker 5 (35:43):
They want to they won a championship.

Speaker 3 (35:45):
They're good. They wouldn't good. That group wouldn't two. We're good.
I give them some credit, right, they never won it
in the nineties.

Speaker 1 (35:52):
They almost went the first decade of this century without
winning it.

Speaker 3 (35:56):
And they got them a championship in two thousand and eight.

Speaker 1 (35:58):
And of course this year and yeah, I mean ROB
four and a half billion dollars.

Speaker 3 (36:06):
It might go for more than that.

Speaker 4 (36:08):
Yeah, we'll see. Uh, you know, I don't. I'm not
surprised at all. You can't, Chris, you're at You're at
the mountaintop. Listen, they ain't gonna get any higher than this.
If that team, say God forbid, somebody gets hurt and
they go the other way and they got those big contractors.
Not as attractive for somebody to buy it.

Speaker 3 (36:31):
It's just not no doubt.

Speaker 1 (36:33):
I mean, teams tend to go up, but you're right,
it wouldn't be as attractive.

Speaker 3 (36:38):
I understand it wholeheartedly.

Speaker 6 (36:40):
Rob.

Speaker 3 (36:40):
They've had their moment in the sun.

Speaker 1 (36:43):
They've held the trophy right to Larry O'Brien trophy, And
if they want to ROB, they can still go back
to all the games they want and they'll be treated
like royalty. Right, So now they can get if part
of it is you want that shine, right, you want
to be in the mix, you want your name known.
That's that's done. Now they can just at some point

(37:07):
you want to spend that money you got, or enjoy
it and your family enjoy it, maybe do something else
with it, travel whatever.

Speaker 3 (37:14):
So good for them. It'll be interesting to see.

Speaker 1 (37:18):
You know who their no owners are, but they're you know,
like you said it, Rodney, last year they gave Jalen
Brown the biggest p E for this year's Jayson Tator,
so you can sign they got for Zingers locked up
there signing Derek White Holiday like that.

Speaker 3 (37:34):
That's a lot of money that they're spending it.

Speaker 1 (37:37):
And you're right, they are right to be like, look,
let's get out down, get out now.

Speaker 3 (37:40):
Years from now people are gonna.

Speaker 4 (37:42):
Be saying, were crazy, right, we got we got, we
got banged up people, We can't know all this, and
we got all this money to pay in the tax
all that. The two aprons, Chris, I mean, I don't
think Betty Krocker had two aprons, you know what I mean.

Speaker 3 (37:56):
Bendi Krochnon have as many aprons as the.

Speaker 5 (37:58):
Celtics exactly exactly all right, this is.

Speaker 3 (38:02):
The odd couple. We got one hour left.

Speaker 1 (38:04):
We want to know what we do this one to
keep it like rib Rob about the golf on Briannie,
really really really really
