in about twenty eight minutes, Dana Scott from the Arizona Republic.
He covers the Suns. We'll talk to him about what's

(01:24):
going on. Bradley Beal there's a lot of talk about
that Kevin Durant is no longer there and what else
is going on? Devin Booker and just to you know,
what's happening with the Sun, So we'll catch up with
him as well.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
Our number two want to talk about baseball.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
This is like the unofficial halfway point of the Major
League Baseball season, fourth of July, and you start talking
about the MVP race Aaron Judge in the American League,
not that Cole Raley isn't there as well. For the Mariners,

(02:01):
Martin who is what two more home runs today? Got
thirty five, Judge has thirty two. But Judge is batting
three sixty something, you know, and having an unbelievable year.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
At the plate.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
So it's not just home runs, you know, he's also
hitting for average and we're seeing average and power and
all the other stuff that goes there. Where Riley is
just Kyle Riley is pounding the ball up thirty five
home runs at the halfway point and we still got
about a week or so before the actual All Star Game.

(02:35):
Could he get the forty or almost which is incredible.
But anyway, I want to talk about the sho hal
Tani and the National League MVP, and there was a
recent poll done and when it came to the American
League MVP MLB experts, there were forty three of the

(02:57):
Martin and thirty five gave Aaron Judge the first place vote.
Thirty five of the forty three. When it came to
the American League Show, hey, actually got thirty nine of
the first place votes. Okay, And I'm not so sure

(03:18):
he's having that type of season. And what I mean
by that is last year was so incredible. He batted
three ten fifty, had over fifty home runs, fifty stolen bases.
Nobody had ever done that, knocked in one hundred and
thirty runs. And I just wonder, like when it comes

(03:41):
to show, hey, have we jumped the shark? And he's
going to get it every year. Remember last year he
did not pitch, but he had a ridiculous year and
the fifty stolen bases is the one that added a
new dimension to what he does. Is it fair to
just every year say he's going to be the MVP
because now this year he's pitching. Because he pitches and

(04:04):
he hits, and should other people be in the mix
or because he does both? He automatically is his to
lose every year, because that's what it feels like. He's
batting two eighty four fifty six RBIs. RBIs are down,
batting averages down. I don't know, he doesn't.

Speaker 2 (04:25):
He doesn't. He doesn't feel like the player that he
was a year ago.

Speaker 4 (04:28):
I mean, that's fine.

Speaker 5 (04:29):
He also is the best player in the National League
right now, like he's Lesion Allen Homers, slugging ops run scored,
and I think the RBI is more of a function
of the back of the Dodgers lineup, and in fact,
he's hitting lead off.

Speaker 4 (04:44):
Think about it, He's hit thirty, so.

Speaker 2 (04:45):
He's going to hit leadoff one time in the game.

Speaker 5 (04:48):
Okay, But the back of the lineup, the seven eight
nine hitters are obviously not if he was hitting fourth
in front of if he's hitting behind Mookie Betts, Will
Smith and Freddie Freeman, he'd have way more RBI. It's
got a hitting behind Tommy Edmond and well last year he.

Speaker 2 (05:04):
Did that and they had he had one hundred and
thirty RBIs.

Speaker 5 (05:06):
It's also halfway through the year right now, so he's
got fifty six.

Speaker 4 (05:10):
He's got fifty.

Speaker 5 (05:12):
But like Socase, we're past the eighty one mark, right,
But well, I would not blink twice if show your
tiny finished with over one hundred RBI. He's got thirty
home runs in fifty six RBI to be like, that's
like he which is ridiculous.

Speaker 1 (05:24):
That means that most of his home runs are solo
home run right, So to me, that's a function of
the people in front of him being on base, less
the actual what he's doing.

Speaker 4 (05:33):
If he's on pace, he's.

Speaker 5 (05:34):
Got how many I've said thirty a bunch of times
now it's actually, yeah, thirty, So.

Speaker 4 (05:39):
He's on pace, toy hit what fifty seven home runs?

Speaker 6 (05:43):
Like?

Speaker 4 (05:43):
If he has fifty seven home runs and hits.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
To seventy two seventy five.

Speaker 4 (05:48):
To seventy to eighty two seventy yeah.

Speaker 1 (05:51):
Because he was three ten last year, he doesn't have
how many stolen bases. I'm just saying, say the same
last year was a mod I'm.

Speaker 4 (05:59):
Looking at who else?

Speaker 5 (06:00):
Am I looking at Pete Carl Armstrong, Kyle Tucker? But
I'm cubs, I'm not looking at you one of those
guys in terms of like, first of all, they kind
of still votes from each other. But I'm not looking
at what they're doing about Juan Sota.

Speaker 1 (06:13):
If he's turned it up in the second half, is
it possible. I'm just asking, if the Mets make a
run he's got twenty one home runs.

Speaker 4 (06:19):
Yeah, well if. But also it's the most valuable player
for the whole season.

Speaker 5 (06:23):
Jan Soda was a mystery man for the first what
twenty five games of the year. But that's why it's
that's why El Tany is far and away the NL favorite.

Speaker 4 (06:31):
It's a lack of competition.

Speaker 1 (06:32):
Do you think, though, I still think that it has
more to do with him being the dual threat and
they don't even look. And I'm not saying he's not
doing anything, Don't get me wrong, That's not what I'm saying.
I think that because he pitches and hits, people just
think he's the MVP regardless. I mean the way it
just feels like that, not based off and it shouldn't

(06:55):
be a fourgone conclusion that because he's gonna win the
MVP the next ten years in a row, if he
does both the next eight in a row. I just
I find that to be I think there's gotta be
something where you look at.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
His numbers from year to year. Was it good as good,
was it worse? You know what I mean? Obviously the
other player has got to be a ball.

Speaker 4 (07:14):
That's what I'm saying. He's not beating against himself for MVP.

Speaker 5 (07:18):
It's not is this show heal Tony's best year is
shoe hel Tany the best player in the National league.

Speaker 4 (07:23):
But I'll give you a valuable player in the National League.

Speaker 1 (07:25):
But I'll give you a perfect example. What year wasn't
Michael Jordan the MVP in the NBA. I mean his
numbers couldn't have been more consistent, And that's all I'm saying.

Speaker 5 (07:35):
So I think Guy's got it wrong, like the same
reason I think Lebron having the numbers of MVPs he
has it's laughable as well.

Speaker 4 (07:42):
I think Guy's got it wrong.

Speaker 2 (07:43):
You think Lebron should have how many?

Speaker 5 (07:46):
I think for the last when Lebron was not the
last few years?

Speaker 4 (07:49):
No, No, when.

Speaker 5 (07:51):
Lebron the end of his first Cleveland run to through
Miami to back to Cleveland, I don't think there was
a better player in the NBA. So if your argument
is should the best player and always win the MVP,
there you got it. I would say I think guys
got it wrong, like I think they got it wrong
with Psyche, they got it wrong with Lebron.

Speaker 2 (08:07):
See that's what I'm saying. That's what I'm saying.

Speaker 1 (08:09):
In those situations, great players, Michael didn't win it every
year even though he would. I don't know who was
better during his run. Maybe somebody had a great year.
And that's what I'm trying to say is with the show, Hey,
it doesn't matter what anybody else is doing, or if
his numbers are as good as it was the year before. Whatever,
They look at it and tell me if I'm wrong

(08:30):
eight seven seven ninety nine Fox.

Speaker 2 (08:32):
But I just get the feeling like it doesn't matter
what he does.

Speaker 1 (08:36):
He pitches, he hits, he's gonna get my vote for
MVP because nobody He's a unicorn because nobody does it.
I don't think that's fair to the rest of the players.
I really problem is School may be a unicorn. What
about Tark Schouble and the years having or a schemes
who's not hitting.

Speaker 5 (08:54):
That's the thing though, That's the thing, you know what
I mean? Or a picture of that. But that's the
thing though. Okay, so somebody who's dominating and pitching, Yes,
if he's pitching and we'll see Otany ramp it up
down the stretch. And if he's pitching X y Z
better than Otani, and like Otany's numbers on the offensive
side of the ball are MVP worthy, which they obviously are.

Speaker 1 (09:13):
What he does, he get hurt if he doesn't pitch well,
say he loses a few games, he gets knocked the round.

Speaker 5 (09:19):
Yeah, you think that if he plays worse than he
shouldn't be atop the NL MVP odds.

Speaker 4 (09:24):
But I agree.

Speaker 5 (09:25):
But if his offense is is like if he's leading
the National League in several offensive categories and the other
people in consideration aren't close, He's got like thirteen more
home runs than Tucker and Armstrong like, he's not Crow
Armstrong like, He's not close in that regard. And on
top of that, he is warming up to pitch. If
he turns out and gets knocked around it has an

(09:46):
ERA of seven and is zero for five for the Dodgers,
then I don't think his pitching would quantify in that counting.

Speaker 4 (09:53):
But he's the hitting still.

Speaker 5 (09:54):
Should and right now, even if he decided never to
pitch again this season, I think he has a strong
argument to be them.

Speaker 1 (10:02):
I'd be I think if he doesn't pitch, that people
would be more apt to look at other people. I
think as long as he pitches, he'll always be his
award to win, and and somebody would have to beat
him out. I don't believe that's and I don't think
that that's I don't think it should I don't think
it should be like that.

Speaker 2 (10:21):
I don't I don't think it should be like that.

Speaker 1 (10:22):
I think you should look at every year individually and
not We understand he's a great player, and and if
he stays healthy and continues on his path a Hall
of Famer and all that other stuff. That is not
my argument eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox. My
argument is, is it just a foregone conclusion? You know
that he's going to be the MVP because he does

(10:44):
two things and nobody else does that, And is that fair?

Speaker 2 (10:50):
Do you feel like that's fair to everybody else?

Speaker 1 (10:53):
There's nobody else doing that, So is he automatically the MVP?
That's That's what that's the That's what I'm trying to
get because that's what it feels like to me now,
is like there's no way to unseat him if he's
doing both.

Speaker 5 (11:09):
His offense is enough. He doesn't need to do both,
Like his offense is enough.

Speaker 1 (11:13):
I think if he's not pitching it, Martin, it would
be it would be up more up, more up to
debate if he if he wasn't.

Speaker 5 (11:22):
Pitching first in ops, first in home runs, second in triples,
like he's just hitting the cover off of the balls.

Speaker 2 (11:29):
Not first in RBS's not first in batting average. There's
all staff.

Speaker 5 (11:33):
But if your first in home runs and second in triples,
whose fault is it?

Speaker 4 (11:36):
If you're like.

Speaker 5 (11:36):
He's clearing the bases, He's cleared the base is nearly
forty times in at bats, That to me is.

Speaker 2 (11:43):
What is his batting average?

Speaker 1 (11:44):
Runners in scoring position, because that's a more accurate when
when people say it's the bottom of the order, you
got to act like he's never up with anybody on base?

Speaker 2 (11:53):
Or is he just hitting home runs? Are there more
to challenge him when there's nobody on base.

Speaker 5 (11:58):
I'm having his numbers in running the scoring position when
we come back from the break. But I know this
the number for home runs atop the NL, the numbers
for triples right there. So if it's runners the scoring position,
they're not there. If at forty eight bats he's cleared
the basis.

Speaker 2 (12:12):
Eight seven, seven ninety nine on Fox.

Speaker 4 (12:16):
Is it fair? Shay? I know?

Speaker 2 (12:18):
Is it thinks it's fair? Right Shoe? He should be
MVP every year. I'm not with it.

Speaker 1 (12:23):
I think it should be not just based on him
being a unicorn. It's gotta be based on how he
performs that year. It's not a lifetime achievement award. Come on, man.
I'm not saying he doesn't deserve it this year if
he plays better, but I'm just saying it shouldn't be automatic.

(12:44):
And that's what it feels like to me. If I'm wrong,
I want to hear from you. It is The Odd
Couple on a Funky Flashback Friday, Rob Parker Martin Weiss

It is the Odd Couple on a Funky flash Funky
Flashback Friday, fourth of July, and we appreciate you hanging
out with us for real eight seven, seven ninety nine
on Fox. Rob Parker Martin White's in for Kelvin Washington.
Kelvin will be back on Monday after the holiday weekend.

(14:09):
Hope you've had a great time this weekend hanging out
or this fourth of July.

Speaker 2 (14:14):
I should say it feels weird today. It doesn't feel
like Friday to me, but cause it's.

Speaker 5 (14:19):
Kind of kind of cheap, right, like you're supposed to
get the Friday's feeling on the fourth of July.

Speaker 4 (14:25):
So when it doubles up, it's like Christmas on.

Speaker 5 (14:27):
A Saturday, like like put Christmas on Wednesday, so then
we could get Wednesday Wednesday off, you know, as opposed
to now it's Friday.

Speaker 4 (14:36):
For like, we're gonna go out have fun anyway, it's Friday, right.

Speaker 2 (14:39):
Eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox, were talking.

Speaker 4 (14:41):
About going out regardless tonight.

Speaker 2 (14:43):
That's right, fourth of July, fifty July sixth matter.

Speaker 4 (14:47):
I don't work actually, but yeah.

Speaker 2 (14:49):
Are you doing to night show too?

Speaker 4 (14:51):
He I'm about to go out?

Speaker 2 (14:53):
You're done after this?

Speaker 9 (14:54):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (14:54):
Well no, I get up at eleven, That's what I mean.
After this, okay, and then after that I'm gonna have fun.

Speaker 1 (15:00):
Eight seven ninety nine on Fox. Eight seven seven ninety
nine on Fox, we're talking about shoe Hal Tahani. Is
he the MVP every year regardless? I mean, because he's
a pitcher and hitter. Is that fair? I don't think
it is. I think you should look at the stats
and it shouldn't just be And I'm not saying he

(15:21):
has bad stats, but this year does not compare the
last year, not by any stretch of the imagination. Richard
in Fremont, California. You're in they couple of Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 4 (15:32):
What's up, Richard?

Speaker 6 (15:35):
What's up? Guys? Thanks for taking my call. Yes, sir, Rob,
I'll tell you something. First of all, Rob, I like
you and and Martin a great show. I still think, though,
I gotta I gotta side with Martin Weiss on this.
I mean, you said yourself, you know things are different
this year, but we gotta be honest and sports, particularly
in the big leagues, it's different every year. I don't

(15:57):
think that Shoya time should be, should should be you know,
Pegg should be because you know he didn't have the
same number of rbigs last year. He had different situation
last year. Yet guys that can get on base, but
this year he does it. But still the fact is.

Speaker 1 (16:13):
He doesn't have the fifties stolen bases. I'm just saying
this season feels like last year to you, I'm just
asking you. That's what I'm mad. Does this I'm the
same to you? Well, no, last year was spectacular to me.

Speaker 6 (16:26):
Well no, but I don't. I don't think it's it's
like last year because like I said, every year is different.
So no, I don't. But I think the fact that
his numbers are close means hey, you know he's still
bawling out. I mean that's something that you can't ignore,
and I think that's the reason why people are still
kind of leaning towards.

Speaker 7 (16:41):
Giving him the MVP.

Speaker 9 (16:42):
Nod.

Speaker 6 (16:42):
Thanks for taking my.

Speaker 4 (16:43):
Call, guy, No, probably, thank you. You're right.

Speaker 5 (16:45):
It doesn't feel like last year because last year Old
Tiny wasn't Peyton one oh one on the gun.

Speaker 4 (16:50):
Last year he was just playing. Last year he was
just hidden.

Speaker 2 (16:54):
No, I know. I'm just saying, like, I think that
we into this thing.

Speaker 1 (17:00):
He's the unicorn, So the unicorn gets to vote no
matter what, because he does two things.

Speaker 2 (17:05):
Regardless of the number.

Speaker 4 (17:06):
He's just doing one thing.

Speaker 2 (17:07):
I want to see the year he doesn't win the MVP, because.

Speaker 4 (17:10):
That's what he did.

Speaker 5 (17:10):
Last year was one thing really well, this year he's
picking up the second one.

Speaker 2 (17:14):
Well, he hasn't done that much pitching wise yet.

Speaker 4 (17:17):
The idea of the second one.

Speaker 1 (17:19):
Uh, Poppy in San Diego, you're on the odd couple
of Fox Sports Radio and what's up?

Speaker 4 (17:24):
Poppy?

Speaker 2 (17:24):
Thanks for joining us on the fourth of July.

Speaker 9 (17:27):
My man and I'm Blacker. Thank you. I ain't here
guys for July. I hope you guys having a great one.
You know, I wanted to talk on baseball tonight. Give
you guys a free pick. I see you guys want
to make that money, you know. And uh, you know
it's a great game that's gonna happen tonight in La.
You're probably gonna watch the Dodgers against the Astra. Yes,
and I'm really loving plus one ten Dodgers winning plus

(17:50):
more than one and a half run. They're gonna thank city.
It's gonna be crazy, you know, La. It's a city
that don't sleep.

Speaker 6 (17:56):
It's a lot of fireworks.

Speaker 9 (17:57):
It's gonna get crazy. Well, Tani's gonna hit a home
run tonight and I could see oh La going crazy.

Speaker 5 (18:03):
What Parker, I just got to ask you this, Will
somebody be on base when Otani is the home r
That's a good question, asked the question of the hour.

Speaker 1 (18:11):
Yes, no doubt, I think. Thanks Poppy for the car.
We appreciate you, thanks for the support. At one point
I did say that it felt like Otani had more
home runs than RBI at one point.

Speaker 10 (18:27):
It's hard to do, no, I know, but that's what
I told all right, So trying to do Shae is
our resident Bleed Dodger Blue guy Shae is frowning his
face whenever I talk about old Tar.

Speaker 11 (18:38):
I got to tune out anytime. It just suit me
out For some reason. Rob G decides to take off
anytime you want to do this top. I don't know
if it's you see my name and he said, we're
going to talk about Atani today.

Speaker 1 (18:50):
No, but but is this the same? You feel like
this is like last year? No, Tani or no, it
doesn't feel the same to me.

Speaker 11 (18:56):
Because he had a fifty to fifty year last year.
It's like it's like pairing, Like it's like saying, oh,
Michael Phelps didn't have six gold medals this year.

Speaker 1 (19:05):
Michael Jordan every year, he didn't win the m v
P every year, but you wouldn't call it a failure.

Speaker 2 (19:11):
We're gonna gona.

Speaker 11 (19:12):
We're gonna go to this Yiannis quote from like four
years ago where I don't know who what what journalists
asked that question, but he goes, do you consider this
year of failure?

Speaker 2 (19:21):
And Yannis went.

Speaker 11 (19:23):
Do do you think do you think it was a
failure because I wasn't in the playoffs?

Speaker 4 (19:26):
Well?

Speaker 11 (19:27):
I did good, I had I had good time. I
had good stats and then and then it bit, It
bit the journalists in the ass. So I'm gonna say
the same question to you. Just because he's not having
a fifty to fifty year, just because he's not in
two home runs a game, doesn't mean he's not having
an m v P year.

Speaker 1 (19:44):
Okay, to you as a Dodger fan, that's all a mask.

Speaker 2 (19:48):
It does, yes, because the magic is there. The magic
is there.

Speaker 11 (19:52):
The dude in a literally a home run.

Speaker 5 (19:56):
It doesn't feel good last year because last year he
wasn't throwing.

Speaker 4 (20:01):
Balls and strikes exactly. Last year, pitching was not a reality,
and he does.

Speaker 2 (20:06):
He hasn't pitched that much this year.

Speaker 5 (20:08):
He's in the rotation. Start he started with three games.
He's gonna start a.

Speaker 4 (20:13):
For these.

Speaker 2 (20:17):
How many he pitched there, dish.

Speaker 5 (20:20):
They're working on him back, they're working in back pitch.

Speaker 2 (20:26):
How many he's like the opener. He hasn't been pitching.

Speaker 5 (20:28):
He is working they're working him back in after Tommy
John surgerd Right, I mean, like that's what I mean.

Speaker 2 (20:35):
He's not pitching like.

Speaker 5 (20:36):
How many strikeouts in six But I'm saying like he's
like they're working him back in doing the.

Speaker 2 (20:43):
Due three strikeouts. I mean they're working back doing that.

Speaker 4 (20:48):
This is this is wrong.

Speaker 2 (20:50):
How many and he's come on four or six.

Speaker 5 (20:55):
Anyway, that's six or four more than he had last year.

Speaker 4 (20:59):
And as a and it makes a ton of sense.

Speaker 5 (21:01):
If you just asked on his face, how many stolen
bases would you like your starting pitcher to have?

Speaker 4 (21:06):
The answer would be none.

Speaker 2 (21:07):
Right now, he's pitched in three games. He will be
put that he wasn't pitching.

Speaker 4 (21:14):
He will be pitching as things progressed. But as I said.

Speaker 11 (21:17):
Before, in four innings pitch he has three strikeouts.

Speaker 1 (21:21):
Not even one strikeout an inning. That's not good. He
just got back Ron. I'm just kidding.

Speaker 5 (21:29):
He's hitting one on one on the gun with thirty
home runs.

Speaker 4 (21:34):
What are we doing? All right? Uh, look at this show.
I'm sick of Lebron and Schoeotoni. I'm done.

Speaker 5 (21:40):
Dana Scott, the Arizona Republic Suns rider will come bring
some sense and levity to this radio show.

Speaker 4 (21:46):
Do we discussed the disaster that is in Phoenix, But
first steve the sacred to the baseball scoreboard.

Speaker 12 (21:52):
The Padres have tied it up and home against Texas
to two in the bottom of the sixth inning. The
Toronto Blue Jays have won five in a row. There's
still cordless at home against the Angels. Bottom of the fifth.
Detroit goes to the fifth with a two to one lead.
At Cleveland, the Guardians have lost seven in a row.
Brewers lead five to three at Miami bottom of the fifth,
Orioles up three to nothing at the Braves in the

(22:14):
top of the fifth inning. Among the day games on
the holiday, at Seattle, the Mariners shutout Pittsburgh six nothing.
Cal Raley with two home runs. He has thirty five
homers seventy four RBIs. The Cubs hit eight home runs,
a franchise record at Wrigley till eleven three was the
final over the rival Cardinals. Eight homers for the Cubs
just three hits for the Cardinals. Cubs pitcher Jamison Tyne

(22:36):
goes on the injured lists strain calf the problem. Cubs
have won four straight. Minnesota beat Tampa Bay four to
three on a solo homer in the bottom of the
ninth Harrison Baders second home run of the day. The
Mets are second in the NLA is just a half
game behind the Phillies, who lost at home, nine to
six to Cincinnati. The Mets at home beat the Yankees
six to five despite Aaron Judge's thirty second home run

(22:57):
of the season. The Yanks plays pitcher Clerk Schmidt on
the I with a sore forearm. Reliever Luke Weaver took
the loss, allowing a two run homer in the seventh
to Jeff McNeil. Yankees have lost five in a row.
The wnbas off Caitlin Clark will miss a fifth straight
game Saturday with a groin injury. She still hasn't gone
full speed in practice. The NBA's Las Vegas Summer League
starts next week July tenth to twentieth. Carlos Alcarez advanced

(23:21):
to the fourth round at Wimbledon, as did number five
Taylor Fritz of the US and number ten Ben Shelton
of the US Women's number one Arena Sabalanca won today,
but number six Madison Keys lost and unseated Naomi Osaka
was eliminated, and US Men's soccer plays the Gold Cup
final Sunday against Mexico on Fox TV from Houston.

Speaker 2 (23:40):
Back to you, all right, thanks appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (23:44):
It is the odd couple on a funky Flashback Friday.

Speaker 2 (23:49):
Yes, we're live on the fourth of July.

Speaker 1 (23:51):
Rob Parker and Martin Weiss here on the Odd Couple
Fox Sports Radio. Now, let's welcome in Dana Scott from
the Arizona republ Look, one of the Sun's writers who
covers the team, and Dana say hello to Martin and
welcome to the Odd Couple.

Speaker 2 (24:06):
How are you great.

Speaker 7 (24:08):
It's good to talk with you, guys. Martin, it's been
a minute right fourth of July. Happy fourth of July,
and hope all as well with you guys, no doubt.

Speaker 2 (24:18):
Let's go right here.

Speaker 1 (24:20):
First thing off the bat, Bradley Beal What is the
deal with him? Last year, of course, or at the
trade deadline he nicks the trade.

Speaker 2 (24:28):
He didn't want to go.

Speaker 1 (24:29):
He's one of two players that have a no trade clause,
him and Lebron. I don't know what they were doing
in Washington, but he has a no trade clause.

Speaker 2 (24:38):
And what are the Sons going to do with Bradley Beal?

Speaker 7 (24:42):
Well, let's see if they could possibly trade him. Nobody
wants them. Nobody wants to trade for a guy that's
over one hundred and ten million who hasn't played at
the sixty games since the twenty twenty one Senior so
and also he's thirty two years old. So when you
have that fast and a guy that you probably he's

(25:03):
still doing great. I mean this past season when he's healthy.
But he's only played fifty three games in each of
the last two seasons. So the market is just not
there for him. They tried to field offers from the Bucks,
the Bulls, and everybody was like nope, nope, nope, nope, nope.
And so you know, the Sun's like man full de

(25:26):
Rap would say, they lose because they got the deal.
Street lose, right, So it's just they can't get anywhere
with him. So now they're trying to work out a
buyout and they're talking with him.

Speaker 1 (25:38):
Why would he take a buyout? Why in the world
would he Nobody really wants him. Why would he take
a buyout and give up money? I think it would
be crazy.

Speaker 7 (25:50):
If there's another team that he wants to go to
that are willing to take him, like say the Miami
he are if the Clippers, I don't see the Clippers happen.
They only have five million left in their mid level
exception after signing Brook Lopez. You know, the other day,
so I see if the Heat he actually wanted to

(26:11):
go to the Heat first. Before he left Washington for Venix,
he wanted to he was thinking about maybe Miami or Milwaukee,
so to go back to where he might want to
be in a place that could use him. And also,
the Sons have a glut of scooting guards.

Speaker 6 (26:29):
Now.

Speaker 7 (26:30):
They got Jalen Green, and that's Kevin Durant trade. Jalen
Green showed thirty three million next season. Kevin, I mean,
Devin Booker is the constant. He's not gonna leave. And
so when you have Bradley Beal, you got this possible
three guard offense. There was a fit issue three shooting
guards that started in an offense. No, it's not gonna happen.
So that's why it's just like all right. He probably realized,

(26:53):
if I'm not gonna fit, I still want my money.
If you're gonna buy me out, then I'm gonna make sure,
like a players want in terms of a buyout, to
make sure that there's another team lined up that wants
him to make back the money that he's losing out on.
But that's where they're at right now.

Speaker 4 (27:08):
Dan is the idea.

Speaker 5 (27:09):
Dana Scott Arizona Republic Suns writer joining the odd couple.
Is it an idea that the concept of just buying
like conceptually the idea of buying out Bradley Beal, to me,
seems like a change in ownership's position that they've had
for what the forty eight or twenty four months that
Ishbia's owned the team, and that is gonna be We're

(27:30):
gonna spend.

Speaker 4 (27:31):
We're gonna spend. We're going full steam ahead.

Speaker 5 (27:33):
Now I agree with the concept we have to figure
out something, but that was not what he was saying
prior to what feels like right now? Do you feel
like the idea of potentially buying out Bradley Beal is
an admission, not necessarily saying out loud, but in that
mission by action by Matt Ishbi is saying we may
not be having the best course of action to plan here.

Speaker 7 (27:56):
Well, yeah, they realize that they screwed up from the
get you know, getting brad Bill no trade class.

Speaker 1 (28:02):
Yeah, but everybody lie for a while, but everybody knew
it when they made that trade.

Speaker 4 (28:07):
It will allow except this is the first step, right.

Speaker 7 (28:10):
Yeah, I mean you got a guy that you traded
for that's worth a quarter of a billion dollars and
a no trade cluse. I mean an he's stupid.

Speaker 13 (28:16):
So like.

Speaker 7 (28:19):
Kevin de rant trade, I understand you want to go
all in and win a championship. The windows short given
his agent the time was thirty four uh, coming from Brooklyn,
so you understand that you pair him with Devin Booker
and as a twosome they were great. Kevin and Devin
Show were great for those two years, and Bradley Beal
coming along, the contract didn't sit and the position wise

(28:42):
it didn't fit with two shooting guards, and they're trying
to basically put Bill in as a point guard, as
a point of attack defender when he wasn't really a
great defender to begin with, even though you know he
he was decent in Washington, but he was the guy.
That's why he got that money in Washington because the
salary cap went up at the time in twenty twenty
two and he basically had to get paid because he

(29:06):
was the only guy left after John Wall fell off
the match. So that's good.

Speaker 1 (29:12):
Yeah, I wanted to ask about you mentioned KD and
just where people are happy he's gone sad because I
know him and Devin Booker and people were excited about
it and thought they were going to do something. I
thought it was very disappointing those guys together, and then
obviously they added Bradley Beal just to me the Sons.
Nothing really came together obviously, and Durant of course got

(29:33):
hurt as well. But where people are people in Phoenix
happy that they've moved on or they said that they gave.

Speaker 7 (29:40):
Up on Durant, Well it's a loss either way. You're
taking one of the greatest players of all time and
moving on from him within two years. I mean that
is a massive, massive defeat in itself. You know, you
take on a guy who basically could give you great
value in attracting other guys to come. But of course

(30:01):
with this new CBA or that's been in place for
two years now, rather you can't do anything past the
second apron after taking on Deal's contract. I mean, those
three guys alone made up one hundred and fifty millions,
and you can only sign vet minimum players after getting
those three guys together. So they had to basically since

(30:22):
they couldn't trade Deal at the trade deadline February, They're like,
all right, well we got to basically trade the guy
who is willing to go and do something, even though
Kevin really didn't want to go. They did it behind
his back and now they then they realized, Okay, he's
finding out that we're trading him or trying to feel
trade behind his back to get Jimmy Butler. And he's like,
okay to the superstar that you don't do that. He's

(30:43):
basically like, all right, you're going to get rid of me.
Let's wait till that for the season. He's real professional
about it. And then they worked it us together. Now
it's the feel, the feeling of feeling up the Phoenix fans.
Sorry for that literation that basically is online. He can't
leave Twitter alone. Even told me, I wake up early

(31:04):
and I'm driven by Twitter. And so you're corresponding to
these random people and you're basically like, you know, fighting
upstream and answering everything to the media, says and he's
always been sensitive. We've got these conversations.

Speaker 2 (31:20):
The most sensitive of all time, right.

Speaker 7 (31:23):
So these things are that people are happy that they
don't have to deal with anymore. I mean, I got
friends who cover the Suns that Devin showed up in
their DMS pre rating them for what they said about
his performance and you know, everything regarding the Suns or
whatever in the trades that they get him. So it
just got ridiculous after a while. But I just feel

(31:45):
like there's a side of Phoenix that knows that they
the fans, know that they are ultimately defeated having one
of the greatest players of all time come to Phoenix
after for ten years they couldn't get anybody other than
drafting Devin Booker to come and play or maybe Chris
Paul and then having to get rid of him for
bradley Field, and now they're looking to wave and stretch

(32:08):
bradley Field for five years against the cap when it's possible.
It's tough to do because they're already both to fifty
percent up to the cap, which you can't do that
in the CBO.

Speaker 4 (32:18):
Now, let me ask you one last question. Uh, you
talked about the addition of Chris Paul. I heard somebody
say this yesterday. I wish I remembered who it was,
but they.

Speaker 5 (32:25):
Said the Phoenix Suns haven't been the same since DeAndre
Ayton left, and I was like, you know what, that's true,
but I don't think he had much to do with it, right, Like,
what do you think will give the impact of DeAndre
eighton on the Lakers, Because I say he disappeared from
the NBA the moment that Jann has blocked his shot
in the finals.

Speaker 7 (32:43):
Yeah, well people can say that of the optics of it,
but they really have him been the same since they
traded Chris Paul away. Now Chris Paul, He's still a
very valuable point guard. He was sixth in the league
and assists with the Spurs this past season as the starter.
So wherever he goes next, he wants to be a star.
If they do wave and stretch Bradley Beal and take

(33:04):
him off of their guaranteed contract list, that opens up
a rockter spot where Paul could come back and be
their starter as a continent point guard that they need
because they have five shooting guards right now and Devin Booker,
Jalen Green, Bradley Beal, Grayson Allen and one yeah, Dylan Brooks.

(33:25):
There you go. So but they have a lot of
length behind them, so if they have Chris Paul, he
could work with that length and Mark Williams and Malawatch
who they just drafted at number ten from the Kevin
Durant trade in Houston, and they also have there are
other big Nick Richards who started for them this season,
so they obviously need somebody to basically do those pick

(33:49):
and rolls. They could do point Book again, but Book
point Book tends to get injured every December ever since
twenty nineteen, so one they won nineteen games that the
nineteen seasons at twenty eighteen nineteen seasons, So there could
be some possible fit for Chris Paul if the Clippers
don't take them, or if they do, off rim of

(34:11):
that minimum so they can keep some of that mid
level exception money they have left the five million.

Speaker 1 (34:16):
All right, His name is Dana Scott from the Arizona Republic.
My buddy, man, we appreciate you joining us here on
the Odd Couple Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (34:25):

no doubt.

Speaker 1 (34:31):
All right, coming up next, it is the speech of
the speech of the greatest speech.

Speaker 2 (34:37):
In sports, is it not.

Speaker 1 (34:40):
I think it is The Odd Couple's coming up, Rob

It is the Odd Couple on a funky flashback Friday,
fourth of July and yes we are live, Rob Parker
Martin Weiss, the Odd Couple Martin In for Kelvin Washington.
He'll be back on Monday. And today, July fourth is

(35:25):
a special day in sports.

Speaker 2 (35:30):
From the standpoint Martin Weiss.

Speaker 1 (35:34):
That it was the day that Louke Gerrig, of course,
one of the all time great baseball players, played for
the Yankees and was the Iron Horse. That was his nickname,
the Iron Horse. The numbers and the stats and everything
that Luke Gregg was just incredible lifetime batting average. Can
I give it to you ready? Do they have his

(35:55):
runners and scoring position? No, I'm just kidding.

Speaker 2 (35:57):
What is it about at three three?

Speaker 1 (36:00):
That's not bad play for the Yankees from nineteen twenty
three to nineteen thirty nine, But on this day and
won six World Series with the Yankees. But on this
day he gave one of the most famous speeches in
sports history.

Speaker 2 (36:14):
Let's take a listen. July fourth, and Lou Garrick.

Speaker 13 (36:18):
For the past two weeks you've been reading about a
bad rag. Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on
the face.

Speaker 1 (36:30):
Of the earth.

Speaker 13 (36:30):
Theory that i might have been given a bad break,
but I've got an awful lot to.

Speaker 4 (36:42):
Live for, thank you.

Speaker 6 (36:46):
So.

Speaker 1 (36:46):
Lou Gerrig Martin had als which they called lou Garrigg's disease.
I mean it was named after him, and he never
played again and retired in nineteen thirty at age thirty six.
But that U that sound of him saying that he's

(37:10):
the luckiest man on earth always resonated. I don't know, right,
it's one of those you know, you're way younger than me,
but did you had you heard that for years?

Speaker 5 (37:20):
Or my mom got me a CD of the greatest
radio calls of all time and I was on one
of them.

Speaker 4 (37:28):
You know, it's the echo of it, just the old
time I'm the luckiest man the history, you know? Do
you get that? And it's just old time radio? Especially
for a radio nerd like me, it's awesome.

Speaker 2 (37:40):
Yeah, those uh, yeah, it's one of those moments. I
don't know.

Speaker 1 (37:44):
I was trying to think of some other you know,
when people said stuff, we were joking about Lebron saying,
give me my damn respect. You remember that one sure
after they won the championship. That was twenty twenty, right,
it had to have been, Yeah, that was twenty twenty.
What'd you think of that when Lebron made his big thing,
you know, like because it was weird, like you shouldn't

(38:07):
have to ask for it, you know, like it was like, well,
now give me my damn respect. And he grabbed his
satchel or whatever that was and walked out.

Speaker 4 (38:16):
Give him his respect.

Speaker 2 (38:17):
I feel like you have to ask for it.

Speaker 1 (38:20):
The king you don't ask for I told you only
recognize one king in the United States, and that's Burger
King Kings.

Speaker 5 (38:28):
The most impactful Fourth of July speech, though, to me,
was mankind. That word should have a new meaning for
all of us today, because we can't be consumed by
our petty differences anymore. We will be united in our
common interest. Perhaps it is fate that today is the
fourth of July, you will once again be fighting for
our freedom, not from tyranny, not from oppressure or for persecution,

(38:51):
but from annihilation. We are fighting for our right to
live to exist. That should we win, the day, the
fourth of Dely.

Speaker 4 (38:58):
Will no longer be known as American.

Speaker 5 (39:00):
Holiday, but as a day when the world declared in
one voice, we will not go quietly into the night.
We will not vanish without a fight. We are going
to live on. We are going to survive. Today we
celebrate our independence. That's from the President of the United States.

(39:20):
Right before Will Smith flew up in that plane and
told those aliens stop shooting that green stuff at me.
He went in there, handled business, and as a result,
today we have the freedoms that we have in this country,
no alien oppression.

Speaker 4 (39:36):
Thank you very much.

Speaker 2 (39:39):
I'll still take lou Garrick. Okay, very nice. Nice, that
was beautiful nice. Yeah, you know you put a little
effort in. Okay, I'll still take uh lu Garrick any day.

Speaker 4 (39:55):
I know the problem. The movie came out in the nineties.

Speaker 2 (39:58):
I doubt I doubt.

Speaker 5 (40:01):
Independence Day came out sixties. Broke and Marilyn, I'm gonna
say this to.

Speaker 1 (40:10):
You, you guys, keep it up, you, but I wish
that you get to live to be my age.

Speaker 4 (40:20):
Experiences stuffy.

Speaker 2 (40:22):
Also all I'm saying, so you go ahead.

Speaker 1 (40:24):
And do your little I'm young and your old kind
of uh bandwagon go ahead.

Speaker 2 (40:29):
I'm just telling.

Speaker 1 (40:30):
You you you can only wish I.

Speaker 4 (40:36):
Am the I do.

Speaker 1 (40:38):
Man, you get here, I want you to know I
know I have.

Speaker 2 (40:43):
I'm very happy where I'm at in my life.

Speaker 1 (40:46):
