You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
Yes, indeed it is The Odd Couple.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
I'm Chris.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
He's Martin Martin Weiss in for Rob Parker Cleary The
Odd Couple.
Speaker 2 (00:42):
Wo up.
Speaker 3 (00:43):
We're having a lot of fun.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
We got Eddie House joining us at the bottom of
the hour.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
You know he wants to glow.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
Former Boston Celtics player who won a championship with them
in two thousand and eight and was there to celebrate
as they won this championshi. This week, we are live
from the tirereck dot Com studios. Tyreight dot com will
help you get there. They've got an unmatched election, fast
free shipping, free row, has a protection and more than
(01:12):
ten thousand recommended installers. Tyreck dot com is the way
tirebine should be. Martin whitees we broached this with Mark Stein,
who's the longtime NBA reporter when we just interviewed him
last hour, and I'm just gonna come out and say it.
He said that actually, a few weeks ago, there was
(01:35):
scuttle butt around the league about this possibly happening. He
brought up that the Lakers a few years ago, when
they were looking for a new coach, looked at Monty Williams,
and he chose them, or chose Phoenix over the Lakers,
which he thought was a better situation, and he did
(01:56):
get them to the NBA Finals, even though they lost
to Milwaukee.
Speaker 3 (02:01):
I'm gonna say it, Martin.
Speaker 1 (02:03):
The Lakers should halt, not halt, but should not rush
into hiring JJ.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
Reddick and if that's their guy.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
But they should strongly consider Monty Williams. Remember, not only
has he been a good coach. I know it didn't
work out in Detroit. I don't know who could have
led that team to a good season in Detroit.
Speaker 4 (02:29):
Now.
Speaker 1 (02:30):
I'm not saying somebody might not have done a better job.
It obviously was not a good fit. But Monty's been
a good coach. He's been a Coach of the Year.
Like I said, he led Phoenix to the NBA Finals
and they were up too. Oh and then it fell apart.
But remember also Martin he had he coached Anthony Davis
(02:53):
in New Orleans.
Speaker 2 (02:54):
Oh yeah, he coached.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
Davis's first three seasons and Davis really was fine.
Speaker 5 (03:02):
Up.
Speaker 1 (03:02):
They had a great relationship, and they didn't consult Davis
before they fired Monty, and but he you know, ended
up Alvin Gentry took over and eventually Anthony Davis demanded
his way out of New Orleans to go to LA.
(03:23):
But he had a great relationship with Mini Williams. He
talked about how you know, Monty cared about the players
as people and men first and not just as ball players.
So there's been a lot of talk that this is
a hire, this Lakers higher will not be so much
for Lebron because obviously he's not the future.
Speaker 3 (03:44):
He's the near future.
Speaker 1 (03:46):
But at forty years old, you know his time, his
days are numbered in terms of playing basketball. But for
Anthony Davis, who you hope will one day take that
torch from Lebron and be able to keep them with
the right moves in championship contention.
Speaker 3 (04:05):
And so I look, I don't I'm not.
Speaker 1 (04:08):
Saying you let a player make a decision, but do
your due diligence, chat with ad.
Speaker 3 (04:16):
See what you know, interview MONI see.
Speaker 1 (04:20):
If he's you know, if he would be a fit,
if he wants the job, first of all.
Speaker 3 (04:24):
Secondly, would he be a fit.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
So I think they should look at Minty Williams and
don't rush. Maybe JJ is hired at the end of
the day. But you're talking about a guy that's been
a coach of the year, a guy that's taking a
team to the NBA Finals, versus a guy with zero
head coaching experience. I think you do your due diligence
and at least talk to it.
Speaker 2 (04:46):
I mean I would let Monty Williams go. And if
I was Monty Williams, I'd be like, look, I'm about
to get paid about eighty million dollars over the next
six years.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
Six to five years sixty five million left five years
sixty million to.
Speaker 2 (05:02):
Be had that job, right, Like, I think I'm gonna
go ahead and take myself to the beach, Chris and
put my feet up and count my money if I'm
Monty Williams. But if I'm the Lakers at this point, uh,
you gotta hire because here's the thing, all right, Chris
Frank Vogels first press conference, the first question was how
(05:23):
did it feel to take this job knowing that you
weren't the first choice already? At JJ Reddick's first press conference,
if he is the head coach of the Lakers, that's
gonna be one of the first questions. Whatever happened with
Dan Hurley? How do you?
Speaker 3 (05:35):
How does it know that?
Speaker 2 (05:35):
How you took this job knowing that you may not
have been in the first choice. How do you have you?
Speaker 1 (05:39):
But let me ask you this, though, is that a
tough question to answer when you have zero You haven't
even coached college or high school basketball?
Speaker 6 (05:49):
Right?
Speaker 3 (05:49):
He coaches kids in what junior high or something like that?
Speaker 2 (05:52):
Sure, but none of these to me.
Speaker 1 (05:54):
I'm gonna say this, and I don't want to interrupt
your flow, but if somebody asked me that question, like
if I was in JJ reddick shoes, I'd be like,
I understand, even if I'm don't, even if I'm a
little bit bothered, you know, I would be like, this
guy just won back to back national championships. I haven't
(06:17):
coached at all. Now, that doesn't mean I'm not gonna
be good. I will be good. And I'm looking at
guys like Steve curR and Mark Jackson and Doc Rivers
and others who had no coaching experience and did a
good job.
Speaker 3 (06:29):
So I'm gonna be good. I'm the coach of this team.
Speaker 1 (06:32):
But I cannot be upset that they would look at
a guy as as accomplished as Dan Hurley.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
To me, it's a simple answer. But now.
Speaker 1 (06:42):
Wos or somebody else, That's what I'm saying you.
Speaker 2 (06:45):
If you have Manty Williams, you bring him in there.
Then the question goes from not Dan Hurley, who's back
to back national championship in college, you have Manti Williams,
who's fresh off coaching the worst team in the NBA
last year by a long shot.
Speaker 5 (06:57):
Man.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
JJ Reddick ain't in no position to begin emotional and
petty about something. You lucky. You're lucky the Lakers will
consider you to coach Lebron James and Anthony Davis.
Speaker 3 (07:11):
You lucky man.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
You better look third, fourth, fifth choice. You better count
your blessings because you have no experience.
Speaker 2 (07:21):
One the thing, I do think you had a good
point throw in that they have to consult Anthony Davis
for the coaching higher right. I think it's it's it's
a fool's endeavor to not consult Anthony Davis and Lebron,
but more so Anthony Davis, because again, he's gonna be
the guy who is the face of this franchise, that
is leading this franchise going forward. We know Lebron is
(07:42):
at this point probably taking it year to year, even
if he doesn't announce that he's taking long years. But
he's not. He's not gonna be long for this league, right,
Anthony Davis is going to be the guy that bridges
your gap into the next into the next era of
the Lakers. It would almost be like high like how
a new producer for the show without consulting you and Rob.
(08:02):
It would be like why would you do that? Right,
because it's like, these are the guys that they gotta
work with, so you might as well at least does
that mean you hire it and firing people now? But
they're taking your opinion into account. Monty Williams and Mark
Stein alluded to this as well. When he was on
at the bottom of Last Hour, was saying how Monty
Williams had dealt with a lot of personal stuff recently
his wife passed away. He had a whole bunch of
(08:23):
stuff going on outside of work, outside of his job,
and I think it probably would do him well to
collect himself quote unquote and get some of that stuff
in order, right, get some of it, just take a
little time off, because you look at some of those
press conferences he had after some of those Pistons games,
and I know that not everybody was locked into the Pistons.
I believe me, I understand why. But he looked beat down,
(08:47):
He looked tired. He did not look like like I mean,
I get it, all they're doing is losing. But you
look at a guy like like Joe Mizzoula for example,
he's the same kind of guy when they and when
they lose. You see it in his face. You see
the way he answers his questions. Now, it's a little
crazy to me, the way he talks sometimes, you know,
he kind of looks a little bit out there. But
(09:08):
Monty Williams looked defeated, and I think he's gonna have
to take some time to be able to gain his
confidence back in a way, because, like you said, he
was just in the NBA Finals a handful of years ago.
Speaker 1 (09:20):
Here's the thing, though, and I hear you and that
very well may be what Monty wants to do. I
feel you, man, if I have five years, sixty five
million dollars come into my way.
Speaker 3 (09:34):
Yeah, I can't be mad.
Speaker 1 (09:36):
Absolutely, I'm not because the Lakers aren't gonna pay him
that much, right, the Lakers are not that that's more
than they offered to Dan Hurley, so they're not going
to offer money that much. So you're right, maybe that's
what he'll do. Only thing I'll throw at you, though,
is he was playing on coaching next year. In fact,
(09:58):
he was playing on coaching for the next five year,
you know what I'm saying, Like he didn't know he
was gonna get fired.
Speaker 2 (10:04):
But also, Chris, he was also planning on taking the
air off before Tom Gores offered him the sun, the moon,
and the stars to move to Detroit, like right, but
he was, he was. He was waffling on the job
until the money was like, nah, I'm gonna go ahead
and take this job.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
So do you think a lot of it was as
far as their failures.
Speaker 3 (10:25):
I mean, obviously he has to take some of the blame,
but do you.
Speaker 1 (10:28):
Think he just really wasn't ready mentally and probably shouldn't
have even been doing.
Speaker 2 (10:33):
That that's kind of where I'm at. That's why I
think I think he wasn't. There was so much and
I hate this. It's hard to speak on this because
you know, I'm not I don't know him personally, I'm
not talking about it. But you know, just as as
somebody who has experienced a lot of death in my life, right,
a lot of you have various family members died throughout
that it takes time to adjust to what your new
(10:57):
normal is, right, It takes time to adjust to to
finding out, Oh I can't just pick up the phone
and call I can't just you know, it takes time
to be able to grieve appropriately. And I don't think
he got that time. And I mean he's got no
wady to blame but himself because he didn't have to
take the job. But when you dangle that much money
in front of somebody, they're gonna do things that they
(11:17):
wouldn't normally do. Right, There are not I shouldna say
wouldn't normally do because.
Speaker 1 (11:21):
You know, right, his wife, you know, his second wife,
Remember his first wife died in the tragic car accident,
and then his second wife had cancer, but it was
you know, it went in remission and so I mean,
now that's not as much of a factor, although to
your point, maybe, you know, maybe he still jumped into early.
(11:44):
But I look, my thing is more so on the Lakers,
you know, it's not so much on Mini. I mean,
I man, my goodness, I wouldn't blame him if he
never coached again, you know.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
I mean, he's he's still young enough where he could.
Speaker 1 (11:58):
Certainly do another job, and he probably doesn't want to
end it the way it did in Detroit. But with
all that money, he could go do whatever he wants.
But I'm just saying, if I'm the Lakers and I'm
about to hire a guy with absolutely no coaching experience,
and there have been rumblings that Anthony Davis in't that Hioretick,
I don't know if that's true, but there's been rumblings
(12:18):
about that, and that he wanted James Berego, who he
got to know in New Orleans.
Speaker 3 (12:23):
Right, So, you know, again, just do your due diligence.
Speaker 1 (12:28):
If Manzi's like, you know what, I'm gonna take a break,
you guys will probably be looking for a new coach
in three years. Anyway, I'll be ready by this. But
if he wants to take a break. I'm totally with
it and totally understand. But yeah, I mean, we will,
you know, I just think that's something they should do.
(12:48):
Now do you think Reddick should be the higher I
thought I thought a guy that you know is just
off the radar. Now Mark Jackson would be good. Now
I'm saying money, I think Sam Cassell should be a considered.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
That's where I'd be going. I'd be looking at Sam Cassell,
or i'd be looking at, honestly, Jeff Van Gundy.
Speaker 3 (13:06):
Who was.
Speaker 1 (13:08):
Of course you know, yeah, you're right, he just went
with the Clippers.
Speaker 2 (13:12):
Now, but he was I mean he was sitting on
the Celtics bench oright you know I would have looked
at I would look. To me, I'm looking at an assistant,
either an assistant coach or a guy who's been a
former head coach. And I know that's not I mean,
shouldn't sound like a hot take, but apparently, you know,
if if you could go on TV and talk about
the game, they think you can coach it as well.
If you look at you know, some of the history
(13:34):
of broadcasters who have been picked up from the sideline,
you know, from the sideline seat with the microphone on
to the sidelines. He's standing up calling the timeouts. I
don't think I think that JJ Reddick at this point.
The problem is Chris, It's been reported at nauseam about
how close they are to a deal. How so, like
(13:55):
for me, I would have never considered JJ Reddick as
a head coach, but it seems so. It seems as
if from all the reporting from the NBA insiders that
we trust to put this type of stuff out there,
that JJ Reddick and the Lakers have been on third
base this entire.
Speaker 1 (14:10):
Damn time, right, So now there's no doubt, no doubt.
Speaker 3 (14:13):
So at this point, like I.
Speaker 2 (14:17):
Would entertain all types of names because I think almost
all of them would be better options.
Speaker 1 (14:22):
Right, All right, Well, we're gonna throw it out to

Speaker 1 (15:36):
All right, it's the Eye Couple. Chris Bruce Martin Weiss
is in for Rob Parker. We got Eddie House coming
up in a little while, but right now it's you
eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox. You're turned the
way in on whether or not the Lakers should go
after Money Williams. At least look at him and talk
(15:57):
to him and interview him and consider him before hiring
JJ Reddick.
Speaker 3 (16:01):
Your thoughts, all right.
Speaker 2 (16:03):
Churz, Let's do what Andy in Virginia's got to say.
Andy you're on the Eye Couple on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 9 (16:09):
What's going on, guys, I hope you're having a good night.
I'm from Roanoke, Virginia, where where JJ actually went to
high school at But I think he's the best option
because I think Lebron is at his best when he's
got a coach who isn't afraid to hold him accountable.
With Tyron LEEU and because every other coach he's had,
(16:31):
like David Blatt, who don't hold him accountable, he always
had some type of kickback. And I think what the
Lakers are seeing is one that podcast with Lebron that
he has, but also JJ's knowledge of the game. I
think that's what's gonna be the best option for them
right now, even though they have limited options.
Speaker 1 (16:51):
So are you sure though that JJ is gonna hold
a Lebron accountable like that?
Speaker 9 (16:57):
I think he will be seen it on the podcast
sometimes he calls Lebron out on his BS.
Speaker 1 (17:02):
Okay, well, that that would be a good thing if
he can do that, So I'm flying if that's the case,
then that's that's a good thing.
Speaker 2 (17:11):
That's I know that Chris, I'd be mad if they
stopped doing the podcast. If he gets they keep doing it.
I want to keep doing it. How those conversations go?
Dan in Maryland? You're on the eye couple on Fox
Sports Radio? What you got pal?
Speaker 8 (17:28):
Hey?
Speaker 5 (17:28):
How you guys doing body?
Speaker 1 (17:30):
Fine?
Speaker 3 (17:30):
We're good man?
Speaker 5 (17:31):
First time? Where's Rob?
Speaker 10 (17:33):
Is there a Golden Girls like memorial service going on there?
Speaker 1 (17:36):
Cruise again?
Speaker 8 (17:39):
Yuh?
Speaker 3 (17:40):
He is there in Birmingham with Martin? Did you see
him today?
Speaker 6 (17:43):
Martin?
Speaker 2 (17:43):
I did see him today, So him and Jail.
Speaker 10 (17:45):
Where was he at the TJ Max or the.
Speaker 4 (17:48):
No, he was.
Speaker 2 (17:49):
He was out there actually doing the work in MLB bro.
Speaker 10 (17:54):
Oh sorry, I thought there was a signing as a
t J Max.
Speaker 3 (17:56):
That's Oh, he'll there'll be a trip there for sure
before he comes back.
Speaker 6 (18:02):
Oh, he's definitely.
Speaker 10 (18:02):
He's hitting up everything that love the show. I have
to go with that with with Lebron, their best bet
is going with JJ, and JJ may agree with it.
Speaker 6 (18:15):
I don't know. They need a scapegoat.
Speaker 10 (18:17):
They're gonna think this team is built to not succeed,
and it's built to not succeed for.
Speaker 5 (18:24):
A few years.
Speaker 10 (18:26):
If you have JJ, you can't hire Minnie Williams. If
Monnie Williams enters this job, and it goes the same
record that it won't happen with the Pistons.
Speaker 5 (18:36):
He's gone.
Speaker 1 (18:38):
I think I don't think it'll be as the bad
as with the Pistons. They won what fourteen games?
Speaker 3 (18:44):
But I hear you.
Speaker 1 (18:45):
Look, if you're JJ, and I agree with you, I
think you know it's optimistic to say they go out
in the first or second round in these next two years.
And if you're JJ Reddy kind of like there, Hurley Martin,
you want to get some security. You want to get
enough years where you've got security there in case you know,
(19:08):
it doesn't go well and they want to fire you.
Speaker 5 (19:10):
Now.
Speaker 2 (19:10):
I do think it's interesting, Chris, because initially I was
thinking you had to go over whatever initial offer you
have to make had to be above Monty Williams when
you think about the record that he had, Like I
thought that it was like whatever new coach you were
going to bring in there had to be above that.
Now that he's out, I wonder that change.
Speaker 1 (19:26):
They didn't offer Hurly as much as Miney was making
what fourteen million a year?
Speaker 2 (19:31):
Yeah, I think that's why Dad Hurley got on that flight.
Speaker 1 (19:33):
Back thirty thirteen million a year thirteen Well, yeah, I
do think they should offer him more.
Speaker 3 (19:38):
I wouldn't offer Reddick that though.
Speaker 2 (19:40):
Let's go I got one car. Let's go to Rick
in the Bronx.
Speaker 5 (19:45):
What's going on, Chris?
Speaker 3 (19:46):
What's up?
Speaker 5 (19:47):
Man?
Speaker 3 (19:47):
We're good?
Speaker 6 (19:49):
Yeah, listen, I miss wrang Buttins.
Speaker 5 (19:51):
Muttin's doing his thing. How you doing? Muttin doing well?
Speaker 2 (19:54):
My friend appreciated little gig yup.
Speaker 5 (19:59):
Chris.
Speaker 6 (19:59):
Let me question because just think if he was in
the locker room with JJ Riddick and two years ago
you just got finished cooking this dude, man, and now
he's your coach.
Speaker 5 (20:09):
I don't understand what.
Speaker 6 (20:11):
I don't understand the logic behind that.
Speaker 1 (20:13):
I know, I think that's a legitimate concern. Now he
may be able to override it. But if you look
at a lot of the and most of the coaches
were mediocre players, right, none of very few were like
great Jason kidd Is one exception, Steve Nash was a
great player, but he obviously didn't even work out as
a coach. But Phil Jackson, Steve Kerr, they coached long
(20:39):
after they they were playing. Days ended, so the players
they were coaching or coaching against didn't take them to
the basket weren't looking at them, man like you was nothing.
Speaker 3 (20:50):
Man, you gonna tell me something, So no, I feel
you on that.
Speaker 5 (20:55):
Now.
Speaker 1 (20:56):
Pat Riley, I think was six years removed, and but
he was only thirty six. But he retired at thirty
and you know, back then guys didn't play as long.
So I just think that that's a legitimate question. I
don't know if it'll be a factor or not, but
it certainly could be. It could be a factor. So yeah,
(21:17):
that's a legitimate point. We got Eddie House around the corner.
But first, Manci Belayos with the f day Manci.
Speaker 2 (21:23):
Yeah, hell, that was nice the time. He was almost perfect.
Speaker 3 (21:27):
Yeah, every time I say it, it's right on the money.
Speaker 2 (21:30):
Yeah, it's right on the money.
Speaker 11 (21:33):
I think the Lakers need to at least look into
Monti Williams and talk to him and see the situation.
That's what I think they should do, because it's been
messy so far for the Lakers. Let's move on to baseball, fellas,
we got a lot going on. Garrett Cole done for
the day for the Yankees, who made his return. He
pitched four innings, gave up three hits, one earned run,
did have five strikeouts, Yankees and Orioles are tied at
(21:55):
one apiece. Top of the fifth inning. The Guardians have
extended their lead over the Mariners seven zero. Bottom of
the six. The Red Sox and Blue Jays were tied.
Boston now on top three to two.
Speaker 2 (22:05):
Top of the fifth.
Speaker 11 (22:05):
The Raise up on the Twins one zero, bottom of
the third, just like the Rangers up on the Mets
one zero. They're about to start this second inning. At
the Men's College World Series, I mentioned it earlier that
Tennessee defeated FSU seven to two. Volunteers are headed to
the Championship Series for the first time since nineteen fifty one.
They're gonna face the winner of Texas A and M
and Florida. They're playing right now. It is two zero
(22:28):
Texas A and M up top of the second inning,
So the Championship Series three game series will start on
a Saturday. That's where that's going on. In the WNBA.
Kaitlin Clark doing a little bit of everything for the Fever.
She's got thirteen points, eight rebounds, five assists, three steals.
She does have five turnovers five of nine from the field,
but the Fever are beating the Missics sixty eight to
(22:49):
sixty one. They just got going in the fourth quarter.
Aliah Boston has twenty points to.
Speaker 2 (22:54):
Lead the fever.
Speaker 11 (22:55):
And as you guys are talking about the big story
in the NBA that the Pistons of fired head coach
Monty Williams after one season. Pascal Siakam expected to return
to the Pacers a four year, one hundred and eighty
nine point five million dollar max contract to return, and
Warriors guard Gary pen has opted into his nine point
one million dollar player option for next season.
Speaker 1 (23:15):
Back to you guys, all right, thank you?
Speaker 3 (23:17):
Mind yeah, all right.
Speaker 1 (23:19):
We are live from the tire rack dot Com Studios
and our next guest, NBA champion Sharpshooter FS one analyst,
Boston Celtics color analyst, probably feels like you won another championship.
Former Boston Celtic Eddie House.
Speaker 3 (23:41):
What's up?
Speaker 10 (23:42):
Man?
Speaker 5 (23:43):
What's so?
Speaker 6 (23:43):
Are you forgot to say?
Speaker 5 (23:44):
Emmy award winning?
Speaker 3 (23:45):
Oh like man?
Speaker 1 (23:46):
My bad me a war winning broadcast?
Speaker 2 (23:52):
Eddie House?
Speaker 3 (23:53):
Out here? You out here?
Speaker 5 (23:56):
You killed me?
Speaker 4 (23:57):
Hey?
Speaker 3 (23:58):
If you deserve it, man, that's all awesome.
Speaker 5 (24:01):
Thank you.
Speaker 6 (24:01):
I do feel like I wanted because I've been a
part of this journey for this team. The last couple
of years went and fell short in the finals. Last year,
the stuff that happened, and this year and just seeing
the growth. I remember I worked with the PAC twelve, right,
I will do color for the PAC twelve. And I
actually interviewed Jalen Brown before the season, so to see
(24:24):
him then and see him now and what he's went
through and everything and all the talks.
Speaker 5 (24:29):
Man, Yeah, I feel a part of it.
Speaker 6 (24:31):
I'm connected to this organization number one, and I'm connected
to these players, so I'm so happy for them.
Speaker 4 (24:37):
Eddie, let me.
Speaker 1 (24:38):
Ask you this because you were on the team that
won the previous championship in two thousand and eight. Kevin Garnet,
Paul Pierce, Ray Allen were the stars. And I don't
know who y'all best player was. I mean, some would
say Garnet, some would say Pierce. They're certainly an argument
for Ray because we know Ray had a great career.
But Pierce won the MVP and nobody really cared. I mean,
(25:01):
it was good for him, but you know what I mean,
it wasn't like, oh, it's KG gonna be upset, or
you know, KG didn't get it and Ray didn't get it.
And this year a part of the story, and I
think Jason Tatum handled it well. Everybody's talking about how.
Speaker 3 (25:18):
He didn't win it. What is your take on that?
Speaker 1 (25:21):
Because I personally think too much is made of it,
because I think you just want to win it no
matter who gets the finals MVP. But what's your take
on it. Havn't been on a team where you had
three stars and only one of them could get it, Like,
did that bother them or you know anything like that.
Speaker 5 (25:40):
No, I don't think it did.
Speaker 6 (25:41):
And I think the narrative is media driven, so it's
not and is national media not local media, you know,
so if you around the local media, they're not saying that.
Because if you are around Jason and Jalen and that team,
per Se and Joe Missoula and the whole coach and said,
you understand that they're are a selfless team. They're they're
(26:05):
selfish on defense, but they're a selfless team to where
nobody is tripping off who's getting to shine. I mean
in that the epitome of that was Game five. You
had seventeen assists between Jalen Brown and Jason Tatum two
years ago.
Speaker 5 (26:22):
Last year, that ain't happening the.
Speaker 6 (26:24):
Year before that. That ain't you know, years prior, that's
not happening. But whatever the game takes and whatever it
takes to win, those two guys are are.
Speaker 9 (26:33):
Up for that.
Speaker 6 (26:33):
And Jalen was the most consistent throughout the playoffs and
especially throughout these finals. It's not a slight on Jason
at all. Jason was phenomenal. He had a game with
twelve assists and only three turnovers. He had a leven
assist last night.
Speaker 5 (26:50):
I mean, come on, like at thirty yeah, with thirty
one points, you know what I mean.
Speaker 6 (26:56):
So my whole thing is when you look at what
they've been able to do, you got to give the management,
excuse me, the ownership credit for believing in management to
put all the right piecea together and sign off on it,
and everybody trust everybody, and that's a trickle down effect.
And that's usually how you create something special, is that
(27:18):
everybody's all bought in for one particular goal and nobody
feels they're above another, and everybody, let's just bring it
together and whatever it takes for us to win, let's
make it happens.
Speaker 2 (27:28):
Eddie, you just mentioned about trusting ownership, trusting management, right,
and I think that over the last two seasons, probably
the most questioned coach in the NBA was Joe Mazzoula, right,
because the way he got the job, and then you know,
he's not exactly smiling in his press conferences, right, you know,
(27:49):
he's kind of a very serious guy. And I think
for and I was guilty of it as well, but
I pretty much every series said that the Celtics had
a coaching disadvantage. It seems like I was, Well, obviously
I was wrong. But what is it about Joe that
because you said, like you said in years past doesn't
happen like because it's been Tatum and Brown with Bruce
Stevens is with Tatum and Brown with Email Ka. What
(28:11):
is it about Missoula that made that essentially got him
over the hunk?
Speaker 5 (28:14):
Well, Number one, let's let's say this.
Speaker 6 (28:16):
When Joe got thrown into the fire, he was from
behind the bench to becoming the head coach. That's a
tough thing to do. You go from being these guys
their friends. You know, I'm going to rebound for you,
I'm getting to know you and all that. And I
think that played to his advantage to be his friend.
But then also when he got the job to draw
also draw.
Speaker 5 (28:37):
The line of life. I'm the head coach.
Speaker 6 (28:39):
Now, I still love you, I'm still your friend, but
I'm gonna hold you accountable, just like how I always
had when we were behind closed doors and I was
pushing you to be better on the in your workouts.
I'm gonna do that same thing, but it's gonna be
in front.
Speaker 5 (28:54):
Of everybody because I'm the big the big voice.
Speaker 6 (28:57):
Also, uh, when when when you when you have a
year to go through those experiences, you figure out like, Okay,
I see what I did wrong here?
Speaker 5 (29:07):
I see because think about it.
Speaker 6 (29:08):
He went to the Eastern Conference Finals in his first season, right,
those guys were still learning. The team was still learning
and maturing. They were still young. So they went through
their rigors. He went through his rigors, but they did
it together. So now they got that year out of
the way, last year of doing it together, and they
got to the Eastern Conference Finals. A lot of teams
that were losing the first round trying to get it
(29:30):
together or not make the playoffs, trying to get it
together or the second round, whatever the case may be.
They got the Conference finals to a game seven and lost.
I think that it's a testament for Joe, because I'll
give you a story, you know he gives He comes
into the locker room, right, and he throws on his
tape and it's an animal Kingdom and it.
Speaker 5 (29:54):
Shows Hunter killing right and I'm dead series.
Speaker 6 (29:59):
This is what he sho.
Speaker 3 (30:01):
Regular or like he did it, No, he does it
a lot.
Speaker 6 (30:05):
And he says he wants the team to look through
the lens of you're either the prey or you're the predator.
And in a moment's notice, it could switch, just like that.
You know, we've seen hyenas getting on a lion, right,
a bunch of hyaenas getting.
Speaker 5 (30:21):
On a lion.
Speaker 6 (30:21):
The lion is now the prey to the hyenas. Then
all of a sudden, here comes another lion out to
touch a teammate, and now it changed the whole narrative.
Now the hyenas are the prey and the lions become
the predators again. So in the blink of an eye,
I think could switch. You always want to be the predator,
you always be on guard.
Speaker 5 (30:41):
So I mean.
Speaker 6 (30:44):
A lot of times you could throw that video on
and got to come out the locker room and be like, man,
what the hell, let's talking about with this wild kingdom.
But they believe in him as a person, so they
catch the message and what it means, and so that's
what resonates, and that to me being around this team,
I can see every time I ask every player about Joe, their.
Speaker 5 (31:05):
Eyes light up.
Speaker 6 (31:06):
They really believe in him. They've eyes light up, but
they get serious and they talk serious business about what
he means to this team, and they what he's actually
meant to them. So, I mean, I think we're in
a great place, man, especially moving forward for the next
three or four.
Speaker 3 (31:21):
Years, Eddie House joining the I Couple.
Speaker 1 (31:23):
You know, it's a copycat league, Eddie, the Celtics, and
one of the things Missoula changed under Emai Ludoka, who
obviously did a great job with them. They were nice
in the league in three point attempts. The first year
under Missoula they were second in the league, and then
this year they led the league in three point attempts
(31:44):
in the regular season and the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (31:46):
I think they are the most ever in the finals.
Speaker 1 (31:48):
So do you expect now more teams to kind of
try to emulate their style, Maybe get five guys they
can shoot the three and put up forty plus a game.
Speaker 6 (32:00):
That sounds good, But can you get five, six, seven
guys that also defend the same way they could put
up to three.
Speaker 5 (32:06):
That's a hard task right there.
Speaker 6 (32:08):
So I think that's the difference where I will say this,
If you try to copycat this, good luck, because it's
just like everybody tried to copycat the Golden State Warriors.
Speaker 5 (32:20):
Good luck.
Speaker 6 (32:21):
You had two of the best shooters, you know what
I mean, You had really really great shooters. Then you
added KD to that mix. Now you got I mean
just I mean off the chart. That's the reason why
they did what they did. This team is bill different
to where you talk about one through seven that can defend.
People look at Sam Hawser as just a knockdown shooter. No,
(32:44):
hell no, he's not just a knockdown shooter. He's a
very very good defender, you know what I mean. He
just doesn't get the credit, gets a bad whistle. Think
about the possession where he got back to back of possessions,
he got a steal, and he got deflections in game
five like he is around. You want to be a
service defender but then also be able to knock down shots.
(33:04):
It's hard to put that mix together. That's why I
got to say, Brad Stevens and the ownership did a
fantastic job of making everything happen because the way that
these contracts and Chris look at it, the way these
contracts are coming out right where they're all they're staggered.
Speaker 5 (33:23):
They're staggered, so they're not hitting.
Speaker 6 (33:25):
We're not going to be in the apron for two
or three years, you know, with the same group, and
so to me, that's like fall by design, and so
that goes to ownership trust and management management knowing that
ownership trust them and we'll find these checks and think
about it. People were saying Jalen Brown the most getting
(33:48):
the most money worth every penny, Finals MVP, What can
they say about him? What can they say about Jason Tatl.
I'm so proud of those guys, I promise you. I
hugged all of those guys as hard as I can,
and you know, told them a couple of little different
things about you know, how I feel about what they
got going on. And I just couldn't be more excited
(34:11):
for this group moving forward because the future is really
really bright.
Speaker 1 (34:16):
Well that's our man, Eddie House. Congratulations man, real talk.
I mean, like you said you're a part of the
Celtics family forever.
Speaker 2 (34:23):
Hey, Chris down I've seen him, Eddie House post game shows.
He was not he was not never labored all year.
Speaker 1 (34:34):
We didn't even ask you about repeating because we know
you think they're gonna repeat.
Speaker 5 (34:38):
I'm not finna speak on that. I'm not finna speak
on that. You know, I'm not finna speak on that.
We gotta go out there and do it again. That's
what it is.
Speaker 6 (34:46):
Man.
Speaker 5 (34:46):
At the end of the day, I know what their
mindset is, though.
Speaker 1 (34:50):
Na, they should be Look, I'm Eddie. I'm saying we
have about thirty seconds for you to comment. Who's gonna
take control of this era?
Speaker 5 (34:57):
Right?
Speaker 3 (34:57):
It's an era of parody six new CHAMPI the last
six years. Will it be Denver? Will it be Boston?
Will it be you know, does Luca get in the mix?
Speaker 1 (35:07):
Janni's obviously wont some Minnesota's coming, and then Wemby is
right around the corner. So it's gonna be interesting to see.
Can Boston be the team to kind of take control?
Speaker 6 (35:19):
Well, I would feel like they believe that they are
the team to take control, and with the coaching staff
that they have Joe Missoula at the Helm, Jalen Brown,
Jason Tatum leading away. I believe in them, and I
think the sky is the limit. All they gotta do
is go out there and put it together. We all
know that health is a big part of it. Health
(35:40):
is a big part. If they stay healthy, man, they
have a damn good chance of doing something very very
special that hasn't been done in a while. And you
know it's just up to them to go out there
and put their best. So forward, we have this nucleus,
we have the same team, and I understand know their
hunger when I when I talk to these when I
(36:02):
talk these guys, they gonna call them youngester, when I
talk to these young men, these men, let me say that,
when I talk to these men, I see it in ais.
Speaker 5 (36:11):
I see the hunger.
Speaker 6 (36:11):
I understand it, and I mean disguise the limit for them.
Speaker 5 (36:16):
Man.
Speaker 1 (36:17):
All right, that's Eddie House, great stuff as always, brother,
Thank you, don't take care, Yes, sir Martin. Paul George
is gonna have something to say about whether or not
the Celtics take control of this era. We'll get into
him next. Fox Sports Radio, The Odd.

(37:17):
Check out expresspros dot com to find your location. That's
Expresspros dot Com. All right, Martin. Look Paul George, who
knows where he'll end up. I feel like he wants
to stay in Southern California play with the Clippers, but
right now they are not in agreement on a contract,
(37:39):
and so Philadelphia, which can offer him a max deal,
will pursue him, along with a few other teams out there.
But here's what he said about where he might go
on his podcast podcast Peak for.
Speaker 4 (37:55):
Sure, contributing to Winning Basketball but I mean at this point,
not even necessarily like it's not even about you know,
people saying chasing a championship, like it's not that, but
it's playing the right style of basketball is what I'm.
Speaker 3 (38:08):
Chasing, Martin.
Speaker 1 (38:11):
I think what he's saying, I mean, some people are
taking that like, oh, he ain't about winning.
Speaker 3 (38:16):
I don't agree with that interpretation.
Speaker 1 (38:19):
I think what he's saying is, Look, I'm not just
going like to the best place I can get a ring.
I'm going to a place where we got a good
chance to get a ring. I do want to win,
but where I'm like, I can play my game and
I can be a part and if I'm a star
(38:40):
level player, I don't want to go somewhere Martin and
just become a role player and get a ring. It
don't matter as much anywhere. Like Jason Kidd has his ring,
but it doesn't in Dallas.
Speaker 3 (38:53):
I don't want to be little it.
Speaker 1 (38:54):
But him winning it in Dallas doesn't mean as much
as if he had wanted in New Jersey when he
was the star. Gary Payton got a ring with the
Miami Heat as a role player.
Speaker 3 (39:06):
We don't we don't really.
Speaker 1 (39:08):
Take that into account when looking at Gary Payton's legacy,
which is great regardless.
Speaker 3 (39:14):
So I just think I understand where he's coming from.
Speaker 1 (39:18):
I don't think he's saying I don't want to win,
but he's saying I want to go somewhere where I
can do me and play my game and be the
best version of me that I can be, and we've got.
Speaker 3 (39:26):
A chance to win. I don't think he's going to
a scrub team just so he can ball out. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (39:32):
But something that Eddie House just he said it a
few times in our interview with him just a little
bit ago. He was talking about how Boston is selfless, right,
and so I think it's gonna if if Paul George
really does I'm not I shouldn't say like that. If
Paul George wants to win a championship, it's gonna have
to be a mix of the both. Do you think
that Paul George at this point in time is a
(39:52):
second Banana or is a good enough Robin to a
Batman to be that like that level of guy. Like
if Paul George was taking the place of Kyrie Irvin,
for example, on the Dallas Mavericks, they would have had
a better showing in the finals.
Speaker 1 (40:05):
I'm not sure that's an interesting one right there, Paul George.
Speaker 3 (40:10):
And maybe. I mean, he's obviously a better defender than Kyrie.
Speaker 1 (40:15):
He wouldn't have had the issues in Boston that Kyrie
has because I guess the emotional baggage is there. But
I hear what you're saying. Look, I don't even think.
I think ideally he is the third banana. And that's
why I think Philly might be a good fit with
the Clippers. I mean, heck, we know Kawhi when healthy
is their best player. And then you could argue Harden,
(40:37):
who has to set the table, was the second guy.
I mean, so I hear you on the second banana?
Is he that That's a tough question.
Speaker 3 (40:45):
It depends on the first banana.
Speaker 1 (40:47):
I do tend to think they'd be better in Dallas
with him, but you know that's not a I'm not
trying to rip Kyrie.
Speaker 5 (40:53):
But I.
Speaker 3 (40:56):
Think ideally he's probably the third guy.
Speaker 2 (40:59):
And I think so too. So that's where I think
he's got to make the decision. Essentially, what type of
guy am I gonna be?
Speaker 5 (41:05):
Like?
Speaker 3 (41:06):
Like, you know, he wants to he'll be a third star, though,
you know what I'm saying yeah, but.
Speaker 2 (41:10):
I think he'd be the Chris Bosh of the Third Stars,
like he'd be the Kevin Love of the Third Bosh
was well.
Speaker 1 (41:17):
And it's interesting because Bosh got into the Hall of Fame. Now,
who knows, if he had stayed in Toronto, maybe would
have been a Hall of Famer, but he got in,
as you know, because of those championships. But I don't
think George would have to sync to that where basically
Bosh was afaging sixteen and six at the end of
their run together, we got nour left keep it locked.
