Speaker 4 (02:00):
Would you want to hit him with a teaser or something?
Speaker 3 (02:02):
No, I just want Alex. You know you you got
a good ear for music. I mean, just give me
a little something to say this already.
Speaker 5 (02:14):
No, don't say that this is Alex. Really you gonna
do me like that. You shouldn't have gotten to be honest,
honest bag. You should have had him in his radio
bag like. Oh, but you got all down and serious
and like you were on a therapist couch. You wanted
him to be No, no, no, this is this is
close to my heart, like how you feel. I didn't
even have to look at the lyrics because this is
this is my song. If I talk about top ten
(02:34):
songs in my life, okay, this is top ten.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
That's how much I love this song.
Speaker 4 (02:38):
I didn't realize it was that. So then why would
you want to just ruin the song by you doing?
Speaker 6 (02:42):
No?
Speaker 3 (02:42):
I didn't ruin it. I made it better.
Speaker 4 (02:44):
You're gonna make a talent better.
Speaker 7 (02:46):
See Ron, you already shot me down before I could
even say it was no.
Speaker 3 (02:48):
I didn't say that. I didn't shoot you down. That
was Kelvin.
Speaker 4 (02:51):
That is true.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
I didn't say anything.
Speaker 5 (02:54):
You said, Oh don't do this to me. That's what
you said. You know this is the show is taped.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
Right.
Speaker 7 (02:59):
What I was gonna say, I wish you owned the
rights this music, Ben because it sounds even better.
Speaker 8 (03:03):
Now.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
Okay, there you go, Okay, all right, wait done, you'll
love it. Universal Music Group over here. Yes, we're all good.
All right, you got some issues here, right? What's your issue?
Speaker 4 (03:15):
Will shoot?
Speaker 5 (03:16):
My issue is just the challenges that we're starting to see.
Gianni's have that I think our janis Jokic have that.
I think it happens to a lot of star players
when you become the man for you know, a couple
of handful of seasons, folks all of a sudden are
able to pin down on you. So let's talk about Jokic.
A tough loss for the Nuggets, an ugly game. We
talked about with Antonio Daniels a little bit earlier, tough
(03:37):
game that they ended up losing to the Thunder and
now they had a chance to be up three to one,
set us a two to two series, which is at
this point in anybody series. But I want to talk
a little bit about the best player in the world
going through it some heavy is the head that wears
the crown right now, and I think we're starting to
see this more and more with Jokis. We talked about
(03:57):
this with Antonio Daniels earlier, this particular playoff round this year.
They're letting these guys bang, they're letting them play, and
they're letting them be physical. And that is something you
have to do with Jokich, who has been a bully
for so long. Because this is the modern day NBA
where there's not a lot of big fellas down there
til for him, not the body, and so he has
(04:18):
been able to have an amazing run the last four
or five years, been obviously the best player in the league,
and still is the best player in the league. But
he's been struggling, averaging twenty one points a game the
last three games. Here's the key part, because points per
game don't necessarily tell the story for him rob because
how great he is he can do other things. But
the field goal percentage being down to thirty three, the
(04:40):
three point percentage, which has been near forty for him,
down to eighteen percent. And here's a big one, five turnovers.
He'd only average two throughout the regular season. We already
know his assists near tenn assists, so this is what
he does. And now when he starts turning over the
ball and he's not making his shots at the same pace,
this hurts this team. This team is built solely around him.
(05:04):
This built his team built. The team is built for
him to dominate in all fastest of the game offensively,
So when he's down shooting, he's turning the ball over
his sister only in a round five assisted game, this
is absolutely detrimental to this team. Again, when he is
the focal point of the offense. And then other thing
I'll say is the disappointing thing for him is he
(05:24):
hasn't been able to rely on his best, second best.
Speaker 4 (05:27):
Player, Jamal Murray.
Speaker 5 (05:28):
Jamal Murray has become inconsistent where Aaron Gordon is probably
their second best player. Aaron Gordon should be your third
best player on a championship team. Aaron Gordon can't be
your second best player on a championship caliber team. I
love what he's doing, I love what he's provided, especially
the story, playing for his brother who lost his life
a year ago, taking care of his sons and family.
But Jamal Murray is supposed to be that for them.
(05:51):
And if Jamal Murray isn't gonna pick them up, then
I just don't see how far they can go. Because Jokich,
it started with the Clippers. That's where it really started.
They threw Zubach on him, a big body on him,
made him work. And again he is still a better
player than Zubatch, but Zubach made him work. And it
started relieving last season with the way the Timberwolves played him.
And people say, if you're gonna let us play more physical,
(06:13):
we're gonna throw more bodies of him. We're gonna follow
him to the tune of me. Even at minutig it Rob,
he said the thunder of playing me great. They're throwing
multiple looks, they're being physical. The refs are letting his
game be physical. They're throwing different looks in different styles
at me, and they've been playing me great defensively. I
appreciate him being honest and giving them credit for that,
but he's gonna have to find a counter move right
(06:34):
now at this point, three games left in this series,
potentially he's gonna have to find a counter move, and
his second best player, Jamal Murray, is going to have
to step up because it's what it's gonna become. If
I'm shocking some things that going away, I had a
young Kobe I can rely on. If I'm Jordan, I'm like, man,
I need to get past these Pistons. I needed Scottie
Pippen to finally show up, and so to me, Jamal
(06:57):
Murray is gonna have to be consistent the last intentionally
three games. If he goes seven for them to win,
he has to come in and say, yokis, they're doing
a great job on you. I've got your back every
single game the next potentially two or three games.
Speaker 3 (07:11):
I mean, I know he's had a rough go to
the last couple of games. He had forty two points
in game one, fifteen to twenty nine from the field,
and you heard Antonio Daniels talk about it. A lot
of this has to do with the style of play,
which they've changed and allowed them to hack them and
stuff that maybe wasn't going on. And it's just the
same thing. And we've seen it, and I've told you
(07:32):
before in the NBA, when push comes to shove, they
let you. They let teams be physical in the beginning,
and Pistons were all over the Knicks in the first
couple of games, right in the first two, and then
all of a sudden the calls stopped coming, and then
all of a sudden, right for the Pistons, and then
all of a sudden, the Knicks were able to do
what they have to do. I think this will They'll
(07:54):
start to call, they'll look and see what has what
they haven't called on him, what they haven't given him,
and this will change and he'll adapt. I just think
he's too good of a player. He's going through a
little stretch, but it was the whole team, especially when
you talk about Game three, the two teams combined for
one for twenty five and he had eight points. I mean,
(08:14):
come on, I mean that that's not even that's that's
not the joker. That's one for eight. I mean eight
points in an NBA quarter Like. I just think that
this will evolve, and the referees, unfortunately, will alter, it
will change, It will make some calls because he's a
(08:36):
superstar player who is going to get some of those,
and maybe you won't be able to be as rough
against them, you know what I mean as they have
been in the series.
Speaker 5 (08:44):
It was a weird series because I just think too
there's a wave of people too rib that the thunder
and able to throw it him like the thunder, similar
to Andyana the Pacers.
Speaker 3 (08:54):
How come they you got forty two in the first game,
is what I'm saying. You got to No, But if
you have a system and you're throwing, because he would
he got forty two in a big win, that was
a huge.
Speaker 5 (09:04):
I would put heavy on first game, meaning what went wrong,
what went right? Depending on the team, what adjustments do
we make. And you know that you've been covering the
league since nineteen ninety seven. That's what the league and
the series are about. Adjustments. That's what makes the playoff
great because you say, all right.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
So I'm saying that there's going to be an adjustment
here as well, because offensively he hasn't been himself. But
there's no way I believe that he will not alter
it or they will figure out a way. And also,
I'm just sitting here on the record, he will start
getting calls, which will make the thunder have to back
(09:39):
off a little bit. Do you know what I mean?
You can't have everybody in file trouble and guys on
the bench. So you'll see because I saw it in
the Knicks. I told you in the first two games
that Madison Square Garden, the Pistons were all over them
and they and the Knicks were lucky to win one
of those games. And then they got to Detroit and
then the calls weren't exactly the same.
Speaker 4 (09:59):
Well that just think that again.
Speaker 5 (10:01):
I think there needs to be a counter punch at
some point, right because all right, they're gonna switch up,
they're gonna do certain things. What is the counter punch?
And maybe right now you have Adelman who is being
you know, learning on the ropes. As far as coaching,
this is only we can still count what it's like
fourteen to fifteen game or whatever it is coaching right now.
So maybe he needs to find that counter punch for
(10:22):
the team, not just only Jokis, but for the Nuggets.
But again I also say, Jamal Murray, man, you need it.
You gotta show up and show out because your kisch.
Speaker 4 (10:29):
Again.
Speaker 5 (10:30):
Sometimes sometimes people just have a good matchup, a favorable
matchup where you're playing well. If I just read numbers,
those are solid, but they're not MVP candidate solid numbers.
And then it becomes, well, who's gonna step up in
my absence or in my not being my normal self?
And that's to me where it's gonna be incoming Steph Curry.
I don't know how many times in his playoffs, specially
championship runs, did he have many a games where he
(10:52):
disappeared or was just Man and Klay Thompson game six,
Clay would come in and save the day, or or
obviously Kevin Durant's a whole another story. Once Kevin Durant
came with that team, but Jamal Murray, But we've seen
Jamal Murray he has, and I'm saying, but he hasn't
been that's I guess. But we have seen it in
the past out But I'm saying, at some point, can
I can I have you be more consistent that period
(11:13):
next time.
Speaker 3 (11:14):
But but going into the fourth quarter yesterday, they had
a chance to be up three to one, which was shocking, seriously,
And and I'm not gonna discount it, but the thunder
this season was on the break in the fourth quarter,
and and and they were able to you know, win
that game. But they were down. I mean it was
it looked like they were gonna be down three to one.
That's what I said. And when they went into the
(11:35):
fourth quarter, that's what I thought, And the and the
and Denver hadn't played that great and they had.
Speaker 4 (11:40):
A chance to win the game. That's where I'm disappointed.
Speaker 5 (11:42):
If I'm Yo ki, I think you had a chance
to close this thing out in the fourth quarter or
what do you make one field go?
Speaker 4 (11:47):
I believe it was in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 5 (11:48):
If you're yo kich this is your chance to put
foot on throat, right, You're right. We got a chance
the team who had a historic season, we got a
chance to put them and they're still young average a's
a little over twenty four. We got a chance to
show with our championship pedigree having been there, let's close
this thing out three up, go up three to one
and put all doubt in their heads. And instead, like
(12:10):
you said, a close game, they're able to pull it
out and now maybe the thunder and feeling like, all right,
we're back where we're supposed to be. But if yeah,
Jamal Murray can be consistent period, not just oh he's
done it before, he can show up from time to time,
can you just be consistent night in, night out, so
that win. Jokic, who is normally consistent, has been struggling
the last five six to seven games outside of that
(12:30):
game one.
Speaker 4 (12:32):
You can have some help, some reinforcement because.
Speaker 5 (12:34):
Aaron Gordon, you ain't winning no championship if Aaron Gordon
is your second best player.
Speaker 3 (12:39):
Period all right? Eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox
eight seven seven nine nine six sixty three sixty nine.
What needs to happen for Nakola Jokic to get back
on track? And are you surprised that the best player
in the world is struggling so mightily? We'll continue that
conversation next with you. It is the odd Couple right
here on Fox Sports Radio, so you know what you

It is the on Cooper, Rob Parker and Kelvin Washington

told you, Rob g allis this is this is y'all

Speaker 7 (14:26):
No, actually, I pulled at Belichick's girlfriend's playlist.
Speaker 4 (14:28):
Oh hey, Bravo, toussa bro. I can't even front. That
was a goo.

Com the way tire bind should be. I'm literally buying
tire as we speak right now. By the way, being
an adult sucks sometimes, all right, eight seven seven ninety
(15:05):
nine on Fox. What's going on right now with Joki's
best playing? The world is on the struggle bus? What
has happened up there? And Denver will take some calls?
Eight seven, seven ninety nine on Fox.
Speaker 3 (15:15):
Who we got Andre in Massachusetts. You're on the odd
couple of Fox Sports Radio. What's up? Dright?
Speaker 4 (15:21):
Cool?
Speaker 8 (15:24):
Thanks taking the call. Listen. In terms of Jokic, listen,
he's had issues specifically last game, didn't shoot the ball
well from this floor. But I'm looking at this game,
Denver is up eight points in the fourth quarter. You know,
they hold on to win, they go up three one.
Speaker 9 (15:38):
We're looking at this in.
Speaker 8 (15:40):
A different fashion. So I think he has played well
overall and this series. I think how the series shaked
out is going to do a lot to define, you know,
how we're looking at him. I see this a lot
in terms of, you know, the two MVP candidates going
head to head and it's just a knockdown, drag out shake. Gilgess,
Alexander hasn't shined.
Speaker 3 (15:58):
Bright well, I was gonna say, I mean, when you're
sitting here talking about that, I agree with that. He
hasn't played that great either, you know, so.
Speaker 8 (16:05):
This this is a Heavyweight Championship bout that's going, you know,
the full fifteen rounds, and both teams are kind of staggered.
But Jogic, they're using him at like point center, he's
getting the ball. You know, what they're scheming up for
him has been effective. It's just I think if they
had held on and closed out that game and they're
up three one, even though I completely concede, you don't
(16:26):
usually see him with these poor you know, shooting seven
between him. He usually is very efficient offensively to get
his triple doubles, and he's kind of struggled and all
the same conclusion is I think with the coaching change,
they have to rely heavyyond Murray Jokers, they're not able
to kind of scheme things up for Porter Junior and
Aaron Gordon gets to hit stuff off the rim. So
I think he's almost like in a player coach situation
(16:48):
as you see him on the sidelines.
Speaker 5 (16:51):
Why I said that, d, Because they got a new
coach is why you said that out there? Mike Malone
sent somewhere like y'all gonna.
Speaker 4 (16:56):
Use me right now.
Speaker 8 (16:58):
I have to say it. Thanks taking the call.
Speaker 4 (16:59):
Yeah, Dre, listen, that's one of the things.
Speaker 5 (17:02):
Again, why it's been shocking to see, well Boston struggle
so much because the point is having shoot past, dribble
guys who can create their own shots. But a lot
of times with Boston they're just shooting threes, and when
the threes aren't falling well, they're in lies of trouble.
And Denver does not have a lot of guys, rob
Gi who can shoot past or dribble, you know what
I mean. Jokis obviously can create for himself and anybody
(17:24):
better than just about anybody in the league, and then
Jamal Murray. But outside of that, you start to get
a guy of guys who it has to be within
the flow of the system, right, you got Brown, you
got Gordon Watson. Some of these guys they can't really
create on their own. And that's some of the trouble
with Denver at times is if Yokis ain't getting it
going or right as he struggling right now thirty three
percent field five turnovers a game, who else can get
(17:46):
that opera, that offense operating at a high pace and efficiently.
Speaker 6 (17:50):
Yeah, I think you guys both made some good points there.
I mean, obviously Jokic went off in game one, so
we know that he's capable of against his defense. He's
struggling right now, and to your point, his teammates outside
of Aaron Gordon, having consistently picked up the slack. My
question though, for you guys is this, I know what
we're gonna focus on, yoga. Because he's the best player
in the world, he's a champion, he's got all the accolades.
(18:11):
How much of this do you think is just credit
to OKC? Because coming into this postseason, even the regular season,
there was two questions about him.
Speaker 3 (18:19):
If there was any questions, it was one, how are
they going to do experience?
Speaker 9 (18:23):
Why?
Speaker 6 (18:23):
Because they're so young, they have no playoffics, they have
no skins on the wall, and we saw them in
Game four come back down six on the road win
that game to even the series like they needed too.
Speaker 3 (18:33):
That was number one.
Speaker 6 (18:33):
Number two the other question was how are they going
to respond to teams with size? Because I mean, I
probably way more than chet Holmes, right, and Hartenstein was a.
Speaker 4 (18:43):
Nice story in New York, but he.
Speaker 6 (18:47):
And this team has shown going against the best player
and the best big man in basketball. That number one,
the size is not really too much of a problem
with him and number two, they can go toe to
to with teams that have that championship experience.
Speaker 3 (19:03):
I looked at it as survival yesterday for their season.
This season was on the line, and sometimes you know,
they're a really good team, and as you said, they
were number one defensively, like they have a lot. They
had a lot. For them to have been down three
to one would have been shocking to me because Denver, right,
what was Denver fourth or no? Uh? Were they fourth?
Speaker 4 (19:25):
Fifth seed?
Speaker 3 (19:25):
Ft seed? Okay, you know what I mean to for
them to have a three to one lead, like I
would have been stunned like like that. When I saw
the score going into the fourth quarter, and then I'm
you know, watching the fourth I'm like wow. I was like,
oh my god, like they're going to go up three
to one. It looked like that, and they survived an
eight point first quarter and now they're they're they're twelve
(19:47):
minutes away. I was like stunned by that that Denver
would could even be in that thing. And I was
thinking to myself, dude, if they knock off the thunder here,
they might be going back to the finals.
Speaker 4 (19:56):
Oh yeah, the West is open.
Speaker 5 (19:59):
If we all fell sleep in a coma for a
week and came up and told you weaker to have
you whatever, that Denver was gonna be representing the Western finals,
or that the Thunder Like, there's not a this isn't
a Kevin Durant to the Warriors type of Western Conference.
Speaker 4 (20:11):
Where you can just go all right, just just penciled
them in.
Speaker 5 (20:13):
You know, this isn't a Lebron Calf team with Kyrie
read Like, just put him in there. For the most part,
this is definitely a competitive Western conference where it's not
crazy that Minnesota. It's not crazy that Denver, it's not
crazy that the thund I think okay See might be
the only team that will be like I didn't see
that coming them in the Western Conference final or in
the representing the West and the finals. I give credit
(20:34):
to your question, ron Gi, to Sam Presty specifically for
keeping continuously finding ways to find guys that can contribute.
And again I mentioned it kind of having a hockey
offense and defense coming at waves right, they can go
three four guys, sub out, sub in, and if the
tempo continues, the defense continues, the offense can continue.
Speaker 4 (20:53):
Not offense struggle.
Speaker 5 (20:54):
Last game obviously, but my point is they're able to
just come in waves with a bunch of guys, and
I think that's helped them through out this whole year. Right,
they don't win that many games without having a team
full of guys that you can depend on. Uh and so,
but I think the one last point before we get
to trending here with Martin the disappointment to your point
is Rob that you would think being it up going
(21:17):
into the fourth, having a chance to seize the moment
and go three one. I have the best player in
the world, still very much in his prime. I'm gonna
win that game, right if I had Peke Lebron at
twenty eight, twenty nine, or Kobe or Shack.
Speaker 3 (21:30):
You think that doesn't mean that that I think what
you're what you're saying to me the Thunder where the
number one seed, and the Thunder also was fighting for
its season. I just I just think it's easy to
just say that like they're like they're supposed to they're
gonna win the game with going no, because it wasn't
just him that the team didn't right, they shopped saying
(21:53):
their team. They wasn't just the joker they shot thirty one.
Speaker 5 (21:56):
But it doesn't matter yet what I'm saying, it doesn't
matter as because we don't do that to other people.
We would be on Kobe Bryant's head right now saying
you gotta finish that job. You were up, you had
a chance to go three to one Lebron. Lebron's to hook.
Speaker 3 (22:10):
But that doesn't mean that they that that he can't
win the series for no.
Speaker 5 (22:13):
No, I'm saying, but I'm saying, the only thing about
this game I'm talking about think I'm not talking about
the serie who knows with his three games left potentially,
I'm saying that's what made that game disappointing was to
your point that he had a chance to win. It
was up in the fourth and he's he's the multiple
time MVP and a champion against a team that's inexperienced.
You would think, oh, this is a he's gonna close
(22:33):
this thing out, is all I'm saying. You would think
that was a perfect scenario for him to do so.
And I think that's why even he would be disappointed
had a chance to do that, and he he knows
how great he is. All Right, we got Joe Varden
getting ready to join us. Here covers the NBA for
the Athletic. Right now, we got to get set on
what's training with Martin Weiss.
Speaker 2 (22:50):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Odd Couple
with Rob Parker and Kelvin Washington weekdays at seven pm
Eastern four pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the
iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 5 (23:02):
We're joined now by Joe Varden, who covers the NBA
for the Athletic. Joe Varden on x AKAA Twitter. Give
him a follow thereon Holler, I see what he's doing
up there, Joe, what's up?
Speaker 1 (23:11):
Man?
Speaker 9 (23:14):
Everything?
Speaker 5 (23:15):
Everything's good, man. You just heard Martin which watching his
game right now. Boston up on what is it? Seven
on the next kind of keeps going back and forth.
Just when you think Boston's gonna bust it open, that's
not the case. The Knicks kind of climb back in
this thing.
Speaker 4 (23:29):
Dude.
Speaker 5 (23:29):
I'll just since we're here, Boston too many threes, first
couple of games, all of a sudden Knicks are up
to they get it back going to game three. What
do you make of this series so far and how
it's kind of been now nip and tuck even in
this one.
Speaker 9 (23:43):
Yeah, I mean there had been twelve quarters, and the
Celtics were utterly dominant in ten of them. But I
guess I'm making the mistake of continually writing off the Knicks.
You know, the thing about the Celtics, and this is
a problem they used to have and they didn't have
it last year, is when they get into close games late,
(24:08):
they they sort of are vulnerable with you know, turnovers,
poor shot selection. You know, Tatum and Brown, for as
great players as they are, in those particular situations when
they're running the offense, which is what the Celtics used
to revert to, that that was problematic and the presence
(24:30):
of Drew Holliday last year changed all that. But your
point is well taken about way too many threes. You know,
at some point you have to turn off the stigot
if it's not working. But as they have gone down
the stretch and those two losses, you know, again it
comes down to Tatum Brown, a lot of ISO, you know,
(24:52):
four decisions, bad passes, and the Nicks have a guy
on the other side if you give him a chance late.
I mean, he's the best putch player in the league
right now. Jalen Brunson. And so you know, I was
asked Earlier today, somebody asked me, do I think the
Celtics will just bludging them the rest of the series,
And I turned it around. I said, well, they better
(25:15):
bludge in the Knicks because these close games, you know,
the Knicks are going to feel real comfortable. So you know,
in today's modern NBA, you know, an eight point deficit,
of course, there's nothing to be anywhere within shouting distance
in the fourth quarter and they could.
Speaker 3 (25:30):
Get real tight, no doubt about it. That the thing,
if you're the Knicks or people who follow the Knicks whatever,
to me, they haven't played well yet. Like if you're
the Celtics, you don't want a team to stick around.
What if they put the string together two good games,
you know what I mean? Like like for them to
even be where they are, which is not that far behind.
(25:53):
If and we saw it, if they went, if they
were able to win this game, somehow, I would be
I would be shock talking to me.
Speaker 9 (26:01):
No, Joe, I think I agree, you know, I mean, already,
there's only five teams in NBA history, don't you dare
ask me to name them. There's only five that lost
the first two games of the series at home and
came back to win the series. So the Celtics and
(26:21):
I know we haven't talked about them yet, but the
Celtics and the Calves were both in that spot. They
were by far the two best teams in the East
all season and two of the best three teams in
the NBA all season, and they fell down two oh
at home, you know, for different reasons. And in the
Celtics case, everybody expects them to win the series and
(26:45):
maybe not to lose another game. But you're exactly right.
When you mess around like that, you put yourself into
a position where if you just get a bad break
or if you know, like you said, if the Knicks
actually figure this out, now you're in an almost historically
untenable right position.
Speaker 2 (27:07):
So yeah, one thing, if.
Speaker 3 (27:08):
They played great as great as they could play, and
that was it. But they really haven't and that and
you just keep saying itself, are they going to play
one good game?
Speaker 5 (27:17):
I'm starting to wonder if this isn't the Knicks though,
because you've kind of felt the same whin that Piston series,
like they haven't really put it, put it together. I'm like,
maybe it's just the Knicks just beat it up, make it,
you know, kind of hang.
Speaker 3 (27:27):
Around at the end. They made shots at the end
and they were able to win. But I'm just saying
here it just seemed like they really haven't played. But
all right, let's move to another series. And uh, denver
that that terrible start of that game with the Thunder
one for twenty five combined for three? What was that, Joe? Like,
(27:48):
we've seen a lot of that, we have, you know.
Speaker 9 (27:52):
I think in some cases, like there's been a couple
of really young teams in these playoffs, you know, the
Thunder being one of them, the Rockets are one. Uh
you know, even the the Timberwolves who have some veterans,
but still collectively they haven't been very far. So I
think that's part of it. I think the other thing
is the officiating, as we know, is way different, way
(28:15):
different and then than it is in the regular season,
and you know, it's much harder to get a shot off.
And then we just know that the spacing is not
the same, the pace is not the same. So all
those things lead to harder times on offense.
Speaker 8 (28:31):
But I do.
Speaker 9 (28:32):
Wonder if you know that that series, this one we're
talking about now, with the Thunder and the Nuggets, there's
just a little bit of nerves involved too, just because
the expectations are so high on the on the part
of the Thunder and they haven't been that far. And
then with the Nuggets, you know, they fire them alone
five days before the season's over, and they have Jokic
(28:55):
and and just everything feels so off there, you know that,
Like that, it's hard to believe that two years ago
they won the NBA Finals. So I think I just
wonder if both teams are playing with a certain level
of expectation that has made them play a little tight.
In this series, here is.
Speaker 5 (29:12):
Joe Varden, our guests covering the NBA for the Athletic Joe,
I want to go to the Pacers. Have we been
disrespecting and sleeping on the Pacers? I mean, they had
a really good close to the season. They made it
to the Eastern Conference finals last year and obviously historic
season for Cleveland, even more so than when they had
Lebron as far as regular season. But the Pacers are like,
hey man, we've been a dynamic offense for now the
last year year and a half, and what about us?
Speaker 9 (29:35):
No, I mean to answer your question, the answer is yes,
But I mean I like I didn't do anything formally
as far as picks this year. But I had been asked,
what about the Pacers in the Cabs series? And you know, sure,
I'm gonna pick Cleveland like Vegas has and everybody else has.
But I was certain to say to point out, like, hey,
(29:58):
the Pacers are a matchup for Cleveland. The personnel is similar,
and then the way that the Pacers like to play
could be problematic for Cleveland. It turned out to be
that way and then some And I think when we
when we think about the Pacers now and we talk
about what the field looks like, I think the three
of us can agree that so far, the Celtics appear vulnerable.
(30:22):
We can't quite put a finger on it, but they
don't look like they did last year. Okay, so that's one. Okay,
we think the Celtics are gonna get by the Knicks.
If they don't, you know, I think that you would
you would feel good about the Pacers in that series.
And then the thunder, you know, they're they're they're choking
on their lack of experience. We'll see if they can
get over that.
Speaker 8 (30:43):
Uh.
Speaker 9 (30:44):
You know, we've talked about the Nuggets. You know, the
Warriors are are are getting way up there in age,
and Steph is hurt, and then in Minnesota they just
seem to have such a problem, you know, scoring the
ball at times. The long way to say that this
is the year for a team that we didn't think
about sneaking there and take the whole darn thing. I
agree with it, you know, Rob, I mean I've seen,
(31:06):
I've want you know, I've covered all these games with
the Pacers and the Calves, and they are deep, and
they are so fast, and they never stop, they never
stop running. They wear you down, you know, like you're
like if you're if you struggle against them in the
fourth quarter, it's because you have spent the first you know, uh,
(31:28):
the first thirty six minutes just sprinting up and down
the floor. So yeah, I mean, you know, I don't
think there'll be a favorite, but I think people should
be very cognizant of the Pacers the rest of the way.
Speaker 5 (31:40):
Yeah, for sure, to keep an eye on them and
see what happens here. We've got a good game and
that it keeps going back and forth between the Knicks
and the Celtics. We'll continue to keep folks up dated. Joe,
Thank you so much, man. I appreciate, appreciate you, my man.
Speaker 3 (31:52):
Thank you.
Speaker 9 (31:52):

All right, so this Friday, somebody who was going after
Bill Belichick and his coaches is now, I mean, the
quarterback's not gonna help with Michael Strahan is set to
interview Bill Belichick. Obviously, Bill Belichick is putting out some
(34:44):
fires right now with everything going on with him and
his girlfriend, everything that's happening at UNC. And so that
would be interesting to see that conversation because you think
what more would have to be saying, Robbie. We put
out the statement, and I told you what I had
to say, and then you know, I enjoyed my girl
get third place in the Miss main Aage over the weekend.
What else would there we need to say? So you know,
(35:05):
why do I why? What what about am I doing
on Friday?
Speaker 9 (35:08):
No?
Speaker 3 (35:08):
I mean Good Morning America. I still think he needs
to clean up a little bit more like no, because
you would just leave it alone and move on. But
it tells you that some damage has been done.
Speaker 4 (35:23):
That's what we were saying. Other people like rob is
to some people just want to argue with it.
Speaker 3 (35:27):
We told you, dammit, you wouldn't be doing another Good
Morning America. Why are you doing another interview. Let it go,
go to go to the practice.
Speaker 5 (35:34):
I do think he likes to go on with straight
hand because like it'll be a little little more of softballs,
a little more.
Speaker 3 (35:39):
Little more softballs.
Speaker 5 (35:41):
I think it's gonna be softball cup, like when you're
when one company plays another in the little softball leagues.
Speaker 3 (35:46):
You know, thinks gonna show up with two bats. I
mean that's all you said.
Speaker 5 (35:51):
He gonna look like Aaron Judge ridiculous in home runs.
So yeah, so well that'll be Friday. We'll see whatever
happens from that. But uh, all right, what else?
Speaker 3 (36:00):
Well, especially you know, I've just figured there's a new
song out there though, Yeah, Bill Belichick, did you know that?
Speaker 4 (36:06):
I didn't know that.
Speaker 3 (36:06):
I told you if Casey Caseon was around, man, this
was would be the number one.
Speaker 4 (36:10):
Lacy case better be in his grave, not rolling around
his grave.
Speaker 3 (36:14):
Rob After this, all right, well you've heard the song,
missus Robinson. It's all here's mister Belichick.
Speaker 4 (36:22):
Okay, there you go, mister Belichick for rock or maybe
not rob.
Speaker 9 (36:27):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (36:27):
Maybe that wouldn't Rob.
Speaker 4 (36:28):
Maybe that was just the new Bill Belichick song. Matter
of fact, no, see it Bill Belichick song. This is
how to Rob. It's Friday. Michael straight hand sits down
with Bill bellich So.
Speaker 5 (36:40):
They gonna come out to that as he comes out
play the song, I'm Michael straight handed right now, would
like to bring out head coach of UNC Watter made
them something like that, and they start playing it like that.
Bill Bellichay is gonna say thank you, Rob,
