something holding a little baby in the story. I don't
know who the baby was. Somebody said, here, uncle Rob.
He just held a picture of it.
Speaker 4 (00:46):
So he has been putting a lot of people through
college and stuff over the years, So I don't know.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
Maybe that's one of.
Speaker 4 (00:52):
The people he's helped put you know, their like their child, Yeah,
put through college and that's there. So we'll a child daddy, daddy,
stepdaddy or daddy daddy, I don't know, whatever, whatever the terms.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
And we got Jonathan Vontebel. Did I say that right?
Speaker 1 (01:30):
Always feel like I said it wrong, Roger, that's it
von Tobel, all right, as it's spelled right. Since Jonathan
von Tobell getting ready to join us vsen senior NBA
analyst hosts a prime time on v send. He'll be
here in just a little bit, bottom of the hour, dude.
This is one of those things, Ephraim. We keep having
these conversations. It's been about a year or two now
because Lebron Elder Statesman Facial League, however long you want
(01:53):
to say, it's been ten, fifteen, twenty whatever year. Steph
Curry has been one of the faces of the league
as we know KD, but now Russ is kind of
a role player, right. KD didn't even make the playoffs
and Lebron got exit early, and Steph is injured. So
the conversation has been who's the next up? Is it
Wemby gonna be the face of the league? Is it
ant Man? Is it Durant? I mean Murra John Morant,
(02:16):
who kind of was it two years ago where he
kind of thought, here it is coming. He's exciting, he
loves the camera. Just you thought he might be his
I feel like aunt kind of said, let me, let
me get that about his player.
Speaker 3 (02:27):
Uh is it Jason Tatum? It's not.
Speaker 1 (02:30):
And so those are the conversations that we were having.
And I keep telling Rob. Rob gets offended because he'll
grab his you know what to a fan, him being
at or and he'll say something kind of crazy, and
I keep telling him, sometimes the person ends up being
that who you didn't necessarily see coming.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
And I use Alan Iverson.
Speaker 1 (02:53):
He wasn't as well articulated and well spoken as a
Jordan and well groomed and were the nice suits. And
he was different. He was raw, authentic. He was himself
and that resonated with people. Michael Vick, you know this.
He wasn't the traditional g Golli sucks quarterback ins the
team and you're like, go Broncos.
Speaker 3 (03:09):
Right on. He was yo, I got the corn Rows.
Speaker 1 (03:11):
And by the way, after party tonight, we're gonna be
getting crunk because this is with the Krunk air in Atlanta,
you know. And he was different. He was the face
of the NFL for a handful of years, or at
least one of them. And I keep telling Rob ant Man,
who says he doesn't want it, because I think he's
trying to run from the responsibility of trying to be
the perfect statesman in while he's big as infects yourself,
it keeps working. And here's what Julius Randall, a veteran
(03:34):
this league, a pros pro, had to say about his
teammate who's younger than him.
Speaker 5 (03:39):
I mean this ant like, I mean the brightest star
in the room, and not just from what he does
on the basketball courts. His personality and how he brings
everybody together. You know, how he can communicate and just
light up a room, you know what I mean.
Speaker 1 (03:53):
He has that in factor, and I think between his gameplay,
which is fascinating. I mean, he's fun to watch. He
can shoot the three. Song'm going crazy on the three ball.
He'll dunk on you mid range. You play defense. Here's
a big thing wants to play eighty two games. Ephraim,
he has said it, manink sitting down, No God, I
(04:13):
want to play. Will also has a perfect bridge of
I want to annihilate my elders, but I respect my elders.
If you heard what he said last night, he said, Man,
we respect this Chiefs as Steve Kirk coaching them. STEP's
over there, Jimmy Butler with their championship caliber team. He
has the perfect balance of I want to smoke you,
but also know and respect who you are. And I
(04:34):
just think he keeps finding himself in his position. Where
you go, man, he's just so likable. Beats the Lakers.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
What does he do?
Speaker 1 (04:41):
Ephram walks around la He's walking around the street, dapping
people up, talking smack with people. I thought it was Lakers.
In five they said, ant Man, Batman, this man Lakers.
He's so likable, he's so authentic. He's a great player.
He wants to compete, and I just keep going.
Speaker 4 (04:58):
He it almost as him like, I know you don't
want it, and I know this, but dude, by being you,
by being good, by being funny, by being charming, by
having great commercials.
Speaker 3 (05:10):
You're about to be it.
Speaker 1 (05:11):
Brother, Where you want it or not, And I just
think he keeps trying to ignore it. And it's sometimes
in life even it's just is meant to be. So
let me tell you this, what you gotta say. There's
a lose lose.
Speaker 4 (05:22):
If you walk up to a young, young, sensational star
and ask them the question, do are you the new
face of the league? Or do you want to be
the face of the league? You can't answer that question
in a way that it's going to resonate either way.
(05:43):
If you say yes, what comes with that? So he
thinks pressure, he thinks, but it's not even the pressure.
The pressure is going out there and playing and getting
your team to win a championship. That's the pressure, The
pressure of being that. All the other stuff comes with that.
But when you ask someone do you want to be
the face of the league or are you the new
(06:03):
face of the league, that's a crazy question to ask.
So what he was like was like, now, I'm not
worried about that. That's not me. I'm not because he
can't control that. That's not what he's doing. He knows
if he wins MVPs, if he wins championships, then it
comes with that. So any player, especially young players that
(06:28):
you ask. If you ask Lebron James his third year
in the league, are you the face of the Are
you the new face of the league? When there's a
Kobe and the Tim Duncan and a Shack and all
of that and iverson, he's how could he answer that question?
So anytime you ask these young up and coming stars
(06:48):
about that, it's not fair to them and their response
isn't going to make sense or resonate with everybody because
we feel like they should be a certain type of way.
We feel like they should be embracing that and yes
and stepping up. Look, they don't have to answer that
for them to become the face of the league. Their play,
(07:09):
they're winning, their abilities. All of those things make you
become the face of the league. The commercials help your
relatability on an international scale. All of that matters. And
for Anthony ant Man Edwards, I love him. I love
(07:29):
the way he plays because he doesn't want to be
your friend. He has a hit list. His Adidas commercial
is him crossing out the old guard and the previous
the faces of the league. Now, he didn't get a
chance to play against Steph this whole series, but he
(07:50):
can cross him out to because he's they're getting ready
to possibly eliminate that team. He's taking on the challenge.
That's why I like him. He's not run from it.
He may run from that question because to me, that
question is ridiculous, but he's not running from the responsibility
of what that question is, and that's to go out
(08:10):
and dominate and get his team in a position to
win a championship.
Speaker 3 (08:15):
And that's what we're seeing him doing. I love I
love his athleticism.
Speaker 4 (08:18):
I love him walking down the streets of LA talking
about live in your accomplishments.
Speaker 1 (08:23):
Yeah, oh yeah, living what you're doing, and you know
what else too? What makes him it's just so compelling.
He tells the story of during the draft he could
be the number one pick and he goes and works
out with the Warriors and Steve Kerr. After the workout, goes, man,
I'm be honest with you, Wed they had the number
two pick. They end up picking Weisman shows how much
say no, but they go, oh, we had a number
(08:44):
one pick. He said, I'm be honest with you, I
wouldn't draft you. And Aunt was like he was like
that was that was a terrible workout And they like,
I gave him all what you mean, he said, dude,
I said with Kevin Durant, Draymond Steph. I played with Jordan,
I played with him. I see what a real workout is.
And I'm telling you right now, young man, and you're
not there. Here's why I love Ann. He told the
story just a week ago. He said that on the
(09:06):
drive home and my trainer, I said, we both said,
you know, instead of being you know not man, he
don't know nothing anyway. I'm about to be the number
one pick. I don't got to listen to him. Who
is he? He's just Steve Kirk. He said, we got
to turn it up. We got to turn it up.
And I love that he is, like I said, embraces
the old guard. He tells you all the time. And
Lebron is one of the greatest of all time. I
(09:26):
love my favorite player. I'm honored to play against KAD,
but I want to trash KD. I want to destroy Katie.
I love that about him, and I just I love
that he is the perfect cool hip but has that
honor and respect for the game, for the history of it.
It's similar to Kobe similar Lebron. Were those greats they
care about the game, they care about the history. He
wants to see the game elevate, and he wants to
(09:48):
compete at a high level. And he'll hit you with
a little Spider Man ant Man in your face, Luca.
He'll talks from Smack to Lebron and tackle Lebron and
ask you this.
Speaker 4 (09:55):
Yeah, you know how he was playing against Lebron and
how he was talking to KD last year. You think
he would have been able to do that to Kobe?
Speaker 3 (10:06):
Yes? No, I'll give you an example. Why. I'll give
you an example. Why say that? No, Kyri? No, no, no, no,
you think Kobe?
Speaker 4 (10:19):
Listen to what I'm telling you. When Lebron James was
coming down the court and ant Man was forcibly pushing him,
what happened after that?
Speaker 3 (10:31):
Nothing? Okay?
Speaker 4 (10:32):
If I thought you were talking a little more, listening
to what I'm saying. If you do that to a
Kobe Bryant, if you do that to a Michael Jordan,
what happens immediately after that? Remember the song from Crime
Op Knuck if you buck gorged Earth, that's the difference.
(10:53):
Talk to any NBA player you want who played against
Jordan or who played against Kobe and they'll let you
know if you step to them with that level of aggression,
they will personally and there's nothing you can do to
stop them. I don't just personally take it out on you, Lebron.
(11:16):
One of the things that this is coming from.
Speaker 1 (11:18):
You know, I'm one of his biggest fans, but he
almost two measured, you know two.
Speaker 4 (11:23):
I know you're trying to rob me up. I know
you're trying to get me out the game. Maybe you've
pushed them, but these two individuals used to make up stories. Yep, Mike, Yeah,
they used to make up story you said up by
my mom. Hey, Mike, wait, what do you mean I
used to make stories?
Speaker 3 (11:36):
Okay? Bet So you take.
Speaker 4 (11:38):
Us a kid who's been in the league three four years,
step into a Kobe and a Lebron like Kobe and
a Michael like that, physically pushing them, taunting them, telling Katie,
get your old butt off the court.
Speaker 2 (11:52):
Lord.
Speaker 1 (11:53):
If he did that to circa last stretch of the Cavaliers,
which I think was the apex of Lebron's game. Some
people think was the I think it was that Cavalier.
I think he had finally full on Bruce Leroy got
the glow that era.
Speaker 4 (12:05):
The Celtics did it to him, right, that's before Heatles.
That's why he went right. So I'm saying post he
is knowing how to win.
Speaker 1 (12:13):
And what I'm saying that like seven Ron, Yes, I
think he goes crazy on them. Yeah, but even right now,
if you did that to a forty year old Kobe
Bryant his last season, Kobe is different. He's his approach
was mania. He'll tell you that, I like you, y'all
ain't got to worry about getting the past. I'm about
(12:33):
to We're good. And he told it. I said, about
two feet away from him once he was telling the story.
It was actually pretty dope little thing. Shout to Jamail Hill.
She interviewed him. BT would have the you know they
have the weekend here in La and it was a
thing called Genius Speaks or something like that, and there
was two it was it was amazing to sit there.
The first one was Kobe, the second one was Floyd Maywell.
(12:55):
The first one was Kobe, and it was first I've
ever heard him tell the story. It was like he
was keeping it all the way real. This is about
twenty thirteen, is fourteen or something like that, and he said,
the reason why I ain't gonna lie I take bad
shots or some shots that are questionable or sajimabayak Co.
Derek Fisher was like literally white open. He was like
licking his fingers, swinging his hands. He said, because I'm
(13:16):
not gonna lie, I black out and you and I
were talking about this, believe off theear. He goes back
to eight nine, ten eleven year old Kobe in Italy
where he was the only black kid on the court
and they would make fun of him.
Speaker 3 (13:28):
Who are you?
Speaker 1 (13:29):
He didn't know the language, and he said, once I
got the ball, this was my one time because they
weren't passing me, they ignore me or make fun of me.
Speaker 3 (13:36):
So he said, I want to prove you. I'm gonna
show you.
Speaker 1 (13:39):
And he said so to this day, obviously then he
would say I have those moments where I have to
get it done.
Speaker 3 (13:46):
I have to prove it to you.
Speaker 1 (13:47):
I have to show and say sometimes I just black
out and I go back to that me that I
have to get this done.
Speaker 3 (13:52):
I was like that.
Speaker 1 (13:52):
I thought that was I never really heard him express that.
You know, it's because you think I can get I'm
the one that needs to do it, but not the
reasoning why. And so he has that maniacal approach where
he sees black and so I believe you that I agree.
Kobe would have been like, now is that I don't
see anything else? Tunnel vision opened up something you can't get.
I have to take your heart. Lebron is measured is well,
(14:16):
what's best for the team. I'm not gonna let this
person fluster me. I'm not gonna get a technical foul.
Let me just And it worked for him. You know,
I didn't get kicked out of games. My teammates still
believing me. But I'm saying two different approaches. Kobe was
I have to get this done. Lebron was like, I
see what you're trying to do. I'm smarter than that.
I'm gonna stay in this game, get my team in it,
and I'm not gonna let you row me up. And
(14:36):
I think those are two different approaches to how they operate.
But with that being said, man a man, another great game,
thirty points sixty.
Speaker 3 (14:44):
One from him and Randall.
Speaker 1 (14:45):
And again I've always said I think he's as much
as he's trying to avoid it or just just be himself.
He's so likable He's so talented, he keeps getting better.
He plays both ends of the court, and I just
think he and his commercials are hilarious, dynamic in a mile.
Speaker 3 (15:00):
Man, he's the next one you gotta finish.
Speaker 4 (15:02):
If he finishes the job right now, he will be
the next one, and you gotta finish it.
Speaker 1 (15:08):
Whether he likes it or not, is how I feel.
I know it's supposed to be win Bey because he's
a unicorn. Yeah, when we gotta win, Man, you can't
be the face of the league. You're not win anybody
trying to do that eight seven seven ninety nine on
Fox eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox, you feel
like Ephram and nine where want it, don't want it,
try to avoid it being authentically himself, just playing the
way he plays and is infectious, and he is exactly
(15:29):
what the lifeline the NBA needs then and he has
that it factor, as Julius Reno's teammate said eight seven
seven ninety nine on Fox, Are we wrong?
Speaker 3 (15:37):
Are we missing it? Do you agree? Want to hear
from you one more time?
Speaker 1 (15:41):
Eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox, Jonathan von Tobel
getting ready to join us in a little bit as well,
It's the okkable Calvin and Ephram and for Rob Fox
Sports Radio, Hey nobody.
Speaker 2 (15:50):
Got time Ford. Be sure to catch live editions of
The Odd Couple with Rob Parker and kelvin Washington weekdays
at seven pm Eastern four pm Pacific on Fox Sports
Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (16:03):
Man, Alex, you're playing a little Tory Lanes. You heard
what happened to him? Yes, Man got lock For those
who don't know Tory Lanes artists are here and he
can rap, he and sing. Kind of a multitalented dude
locked up right now. Man stap fourteen times. That was like,
whoa dude? He's buff too. Yeah, he's also like five three.
Yeah literally, I'm not even funny. Think he's like five
(16:26):
four or something. Yeah, but thankfully he's talking. He's doing well.
But man two collapse lungs the whole nine. So it's
the Odd Couple, Kelvin Washington E for salam and for
Ron Parker. And for four or forty years, Tyrek has
been helping customers find the right tires for how, what
and where they drive. Ship Fast and Free back by
free Road has a protection with convenient insulation options like
(16:48):
mobile Tire Insulation, tirereq dot com, the way tire buying
should be having a conversation about an man, and we've
had it before.
Speaker 3 (16:55):
I just can't.
Speaker 1 (16:56):
He's too infectious, he's too good, he's talented, he has
respect for his elders, and commercials are great or hilarious.
I just think it's almost unavoidable for him to be.
And I don't want to keep saying the face of
the league, but just that guy that you just know
and like to watch play and watch talk about the
who the game.
Speaker 3 (17:14):
Let's go to h Brian Brian on Vegas talk.
Speaker 1 (17:17):
About this and man, you are on with the odd
couple Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (17:20):
What's up BH?
Speaker 6 (17:22):
What's going on?
Speaker 2 (17:22):
Man?
Speaker 4 (17:23):
Uh?
Speaker 7 (17:23):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (17:24):
So I usually give rab a hard time when I
when I called in for his takes, but I got
I mean, he's got to catch astray again, of course,
and then he can be the face of the league.
I definitely think he can, because you need someone that's loud,
kind of boisterous, kind of you know, but he's got
that fire on the court him. He churping at KD
last year. But he's got to win though, he's gotta win.
Speaker 7 (17:46):
He's got to get at.
Speaker 6 (17:47):
Least to the finals. If he falls short of the finals, okay,
that's fine, but he's got You can't be marketable without winning,
so he can definitely do it.
Speaker 7 (17:55):
But he's got to win.
Speaker 1 (17:56):
Yeah, And I think to his credit, he already has
been to the Western connas finals. Looks like he might
be that, looks like should be there this year as well.
And i'd be, you know, back to back years again
in the Western Conference finals, only twenty four years old,
and as Ethan brought up, taking out KD, taking out stuff,
taking out Lebron, taking out Luca. Got a nice little hitlist.
So I definitely think if you're the Timberwood man, you
do everything possible to continue to build around this guy
(18:18):
because you look like you might have got something finally
for the next ten years.
Speaker 3 (18:22):
Facts.
Speaker 1 (18:22):
All right, let's keep going. Let's go to Kevin out
in Culver City. What's up, Kevin? You're on with the
hot couple of Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 7 (18:28):
God is good all the time, Kelvin, he's from my man.
Speaker 3 (18:32):
What's happening?
Speaker 7 (18:33):
Brother, kel JAYSONMONTI get off of my Lakers than Luca.
Speaker 3 (18:36):
Man.
Speaker 8 (18:38):
Look look what I saw this guy.
Speaker 7 (18:40):
When you look at Anthony Enwards. I said, that's a
superstar at University of Georgia. And you know, Kevin, I've
been calling Rob about Anthony Edwards being Jordan is having
this flair two of being that guy. He wants that
smoke and the more and more he says, he's not
that he is the face of the league. He's the
face of the league right now. He can't run away
from it. He was in the movie Hustle with Adam
Sadler has that.
Speaker 8 (19:01):
Demeanor for Benzel Washington, looks to Kobe Swag and look
at your boy, Kendrick Lamar. That's the big three.
Speaker 7 (19:07):
It's just me.
Speaker 8 (19:08):
That's that's what Anthony Edwards is. Forget Luca for this shine,
It's about me. And he had that DNX energy when
Luca beat him last season and we saw in the
series against the Lakers. He wants all that quote and
he gonna walk that smoke with side next series. He
is that guy.
Speaker 7 (19:23):
If he wins the championship, yes we're.
Speaker 8 (19:25):
Gonna start talking about him like we talking about MJ
in nineteen ninety one. I just have to say, that's
just the way it is. That's the fact.
Speaker 1 (19:30):
Yeah, I just I think it's just want. Yeah, Kevin,
I just feel like it's almost unavoidable. Appreciate the car
as always, Kevin it. We'll take one more real quick,
We'll go to Andre out in Massachusetts. Andre, you're on
with the ocovil Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 9 (19:43):
Yeah, how you doing. Thanks for taking a court listening.
In terms of Anthony Edwards being the face to the league,
he's most certainly the air of parent. He combines the
coarisma off the court with this year explosiveness on the court,
and it's just up to him in terms.
Speaker 7 (19:54):
Of how bar he wants to take it.
Speaker 9 (19:56):
Had the opportunity last year, in my opinion, in that
matchup against the Dallas maver to break through and go
to the NBA Finals, and this year is right there
for him, you know what I mean, It's on there
on the silver platter, platter, the Western conferences wide open
and to the point that other callers have noted, he
has that eye of the tiger about him. Whereas off
the court, you know, he has you know, the common touch.
Speaker 8 (20:15):
You know, he's funny.
Speaker 9 (20:16):
You know, off the coff he can say.
Speaker 7 (20:18):
Things, you know what I mean, play you know, he
just has.
Speaker 9 (20:20):
Those one liners. But on the court he's going at
those veteran players as much as you know. He's a
clutch sports guy, so Lebron has helped him kind of develop.
But when they get on the court, in between those lines,
it's all business and he is trying to win. So
that's something that makes him different. I feel from some
of the other AAU you know, want to be buddies,
cry pok, you lift out.
Speaker 8 (20:37):
If you lose, it's all their fancy Edwards.
Speaker 9 (20:39):
I would like to see Minnesota break through and make
it to the NBA Finals and him cement his claim
as stop and coming face of the league. Thanks taking
a call.
Speaker 1 (20:47):
I think we're all in agreement that it's kind of
just feeling like feeling like it's inevitable. You never know, obviously,
but just it just kind of feels like that might
be all right. Thank you guys for the call. Uh
we got Jonathan von Tobele getting ready to join us
here and a little bit interested to hear what he
has to say on some of the lines that are
happening right now. With some of these games, this has
been a crazy playoff to predict.
Speaker 2 (21:07):

Speaker 1 (21:19):
Odd couple kelvin Washington, E from Salam who is in
for Rob. Rob will be back tomorrow on a trash
talking Tuesday. You guys lined up did great for that.
We appreciate it as always. All right, we're joined now
as promised by Jonathan von Tobel Vsen, senior NBA analysts,
host of prime Time on Vsen me jvt on X Jonathan,
(21:40):
what's up man?
Speaker 3 (21:41):
Great to have you on a game, ry.
Speaker 10 (21:42):
Man, Thanks for having me on again. Very excited for
what is shaping up to be a pretty fun and
exciting postseason. To get to the nitty and the gritty.
It looks like you have a good Eastern Conference final
setting up, maybe if the Pacers hold on here and
the West is looking wild so fun.
Speaker 1 (21:56):
Do not disrespect the Jalen Brown led Celtics. Okay, don't
put them out there too early, Jonathan, No, I think
you might be on something. But let us talk about this.
This playoff has been weird. Top seeds have struggle, teams
up twenty points, struggled even to night where you had
the Cavaliers were up at by seventeen and one point.
No lead is safe this NBA Finals. Just talk to
(22:16):
me about kind of the when it looks obvious that
the team's gonna win. They don't you thought of home
team's gonna win. They've lost that. You had the home
team and the Celtics losing the twice. What's going on?
Speaker 10 (22:29):
That's to me? I have no idea, right like nobody
has any idea what's going on? But I think there's
two things that really stick out when you look at
this postseason when you're talking about the oddity that has
transpired and we watch it in the court. First Off,
the home court have meant nothing throughout this entire postseason.
Home teams so far in this postseason are just thirty
and twenty nine, So there's one game above five hundred.
(22:51):
They are below five hundred. When it comes to covering
spreads at home, the median result at home for these
home teams is just by one point. It is the
most frequent outcome which is in so you're barely getting
by and on average you're only lou winning by two
point seven points per game. If you look at it
from a net rating standpoint, at home, it's this hold.
So coming into today, the average home net rating was
(23:12):
plus three. That would be the lowest that we have
seen for home teams since the twenty seventeen season. So
that's the first one. Like home court has been absolutely nothing.
That's been the weird part about it. The other weird
part has been, like these teams when they lose, they
just respond. From a betting standpoint, if you're just betting
the teams that lost the previous game out right, you're
(23:33):
thirty one, fifteen and one against the spread. Like they've
just absolutely killing it. So look, teams bounce back really
well and home court doesn't matter. And I think that's
really fueled the oddity that has been this postseason.
Speaker 1 (23:45):
I'm looking at some of these young teams and like,
you know, okay, see he was a number one seed,
but they're struggling ish right now with Denver. How much
money was on the Calves the number one sed so
the number one seed in the West of Thunder Folks
betting on them because they had such amazing franchise record
setting wins.
Speaker 10 (24:05):
So the Thunder, Yes, like there was a lot of
market support out there for Oklahoma City. You know, you
saw them become odds on favorites. So in other words,
you know you're laying a price or putting a price down, oh,
to win one hundred dollars right minus one fifteen, minus
one twenty.
Speaker 3 (24:17):
Whatever it is.
Speaker 10 (24:18):
They became odds on favored very quickly. As far as
the Cavaliers were concerned, there was resistance for Cleveland in
the belief of the Cavaliers they got actually bet against
in this series against the Indiana Pacers. Part of that
with some injury concerns. We knew that Darius Garland was
hurt prior to the series, right, he missed last two
games in the series against Miami. And there was also
a strong belief by a lot of really smart NBA
(24:39):
betters that this Pacers team was much better than expected.
We watched them go to the Eastern Conference Finals, one
of the toughest sweeps you'll ever see. Right this Boston
self expect them in four really hard fought games. There
was a belief in that team, and there was I
think some trepidation when it came to Cleveland. So at
least of those two, there was a very strong belief
in Oka. See there still is. They are the odds
on favorite to win this thing now with what's going
(25:00):
on with the Celtics, and when I say this thing,
I mean the finals, like they are the ods done
favorite to win the finals. But right now and coming
into this series, there was a trepidation about buying into
this Cavs team.
Speaker 3 (25:09):
Now nowt for the Nicks.
Speaker 4 (25:11):
I know, they're the darlings of the NBA right now,
New York is on fire. What are the odds of
them coming out of the East and winning it all?
Speaker 10 (25:22):
Actually so, they are favored to make it out of
the Eastern Conference at this point right now, and rightfully so.
Not only are the up three to one, and it
seems extremely likely that we kind of like we opened
up with that they're going to beat this Celtics team
given what we know, but they're going to be favored
in a series against Indiana, which it seems like that
is going to be the case. We'll have home court
over Indiana. They're the higher rated team. I think the
(25:43):
question is just like how and to what degree they
will be favored over the Indiana Pacers. But they will
be favored there, and they're the favorites to come out
of the East, which is saying something as we know
right for a team that hasn't really made very deep
runs at this point, and despite a very good crew,
especially under Tom Thibodeau, we haven't seen him in the
Eastern Conference finals for a while. So right now they
are the favorite to win the Eastern Conference to plus
(26:04):
one fifteen and that'll be a really tight series price
with Indiana. But they are going to I was just
texting my buddies about this, that the market's going to
buy in on the Knicks. There's going to be this
Knicks tax, if you will. There's going to be a
love for the Knickerbockers to get it out of the
Eastern Conference, and I think you're probably going to see
a pretty expensive price on them relative to wear their
price for them to beat this Indiana team.
Speaker 1 (26:25):
Jonathan von Tobel, v SA Senior NBA analysts hosts a
prime Tamo V saying with the Akabl, Kelvin and Ephraim
And for Rob, let me ask you flip it up
a little bit.
Speaker 3 (26:35):
Let's step aside from.
Speaker 1 (26:36):
The playoffs playoffs, let's go to the draft lottery. Now
we have where it looks like Cooper Flag is going
to be the number one pig, But I also want
to go to Yannis because some people saying, would you
trade Giannis?
Speaker 3 (26:49):
Do this?
Speaker 1 (26:49):
Are there any bets and odds on where Yannis were
to go if he were to be traded?
Speaker 10 (26:55):
Yes, there are. So the way that you phrase this
because you know you don't want to do it, like
where will he play? Or what team will acquire him?
So the wording is where will he play his first
regular season minute? The Bucks are minus one forty five,
so they're still the favorite to retain his services. The
Spurs are the second choice of plus three fifty. The
Rockets are Yeah, the Rockets are seven to one, the
(27:16):
Mavericks are twelve to one, and then you get into
the really long shots. But the logic there with san
Antonio is that now with the second overall pick and
a lot of the young talent that they have, and
some of the deals and the picks that they have,
they could put together a tantalizing package for Milwaukee to
go and get Giannis and pair him up with Victor Wabanyama.
I would be fascinated by it. I called it the
other day. I think it would be basketball porn if
(27:37):
those two were to play together like that'd be incredible
to watch and the market thinks that that is the
most second most likely place for him to potentially land
san Antonio second choice of plus three fifty.
Speaker 1 (27:47):
I am gonna lie that kind of that would be
scary on ras between those two. If they put their
arms all the way out together and touch fingertips, they
could to the one end of the court the other.
Speaker 4 (27:56):
Ephim like, that's insane. Just see him walking down the
court holding hands. Yeah, the whole I mean that is
a lot of I mean you could play a three.
Speaker 10 (28:05):
To two zone and you'd be fine on the back end.
Speaker 1 (28:07):
Yeah, completely fine, My goodness.
Speaker 3 (28:11):
I so think that's ridiculous.
Speaker 4 (28:15):
We have a discussion we've been when talking about in
terms of Dallas and the number one pick. I am
under the assumption that I think you give up that
number one pick and you bring Giannis in to pair
with Kyrie and Anthony Davis. He thinks you draft the
Cooper flag. Where you sit on.
Speaker 10 (28:36):
That, So this will sound like a cop out of first,
but it'll make sense. I think you're both right. I
think that there is no question that you should draft
Cooper flag in built around him. But I also think
that you, as a franchise willingly shortened your window when
you traded away Luka Doncic and win and got Anthony Davis,
and you told all of us defense win championship. So
(28:56):
our window is now, we want to win now, like
you willingly stepped into this. So why would you not
then back up your own words and go and get
Giannis onto the Koumpo and try to win now. That
was your whole deal when you traded away Luka Nancic,
And I think it's going to ring very hollow when
they eventually don't and they just they just bank on
(29:16):
Cooper Flag, which they rightfully should in a vacuum. But
it just doesn't make sense to me that you would
tell all of us, hey, man, like we want to
win now, this team can do it now, and then
not use that first overall pick to go and get
the best player on the market that's been on the
market in a very long time. I just don't think
that makes sense. And I think it's almost somewhat hypocritical.
If they don't go do it.
Speaker 1 (29:36):
Yeah, I'll get you out of here on this one.
What about what the Lebron and the Lakers as far
as next year?
Speaker 3 (29:44):
People say, ah, man, you.
Speaker 1 (29:45):
Know they already they just needed an offseason?
Speaker 3 (29:47):
Da da da da da.
Speaker 1 (29:48):
Are they already looking good as far as it's just
because they're the Lakers.
Speaker 3 (29:51):
When it comes to next year, what they expected to do?
Speaker 10 (29:54):
Yeah, Like the odds for them to win the finals
are always going to be kind of short, especially out
here in Las Vegas, like we're a Lakers town, right,
like the to play the preseason games out here, all
though so Cal transplants. There's always a little bit more
on the market than there should be for the Lakers
to win everything. Right now, they're about eighteen to one
to win the title. To give you an idea, like
they're ahead of Golden State, They're ahead of Dallas, they're
ahead of stan Antonio the I mean, they're ahead of
(30:15):
Philadelphia to win a championship. I'd argue they're probably on
the same wavelength as seemed like the Warriors of the Mavericks.
They shouldn't be ahead of them, But that is just
the case of the Lakers. They're going to be a
very hot commodity at the window. You should have seen
the action on it when they first got Luca. Books
could not make the number short enough, and that's always
going to continue as long as they're the Lakers, as
long as they have players like Luca Lebron.
Speaker 1 (30:35):
Yeah, there you have it all right, Jonathan von Tol.
But thank you so much as always, man, We appreciate you.
Speaker 10 (30:40):
Always good to talk to you, guys, Thanks for having me.
Speaker 3 (30:42):
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (30:43):
Randomly before we break here, I'm looking at this commercial
for New Balance.
Speaker 3 (30:46):
That's the worst commercial ontil.
Speaker 1 (30:47):
Yeah, New guys gotta step the game up, especially the
way night we're going NICs going crazy. But my point
of it was Cooper Flagg was in there, Dude, what
would have been like even if you know you obviously
weren't Cooper flag.
Speaker 4 (30:59):
But so his deal is up next year with a
New Balance, So I was saying that there's a world
where he came back to Duke, played another year and
then came out next year. Still would have been the
first pick in the draft, of course, but he would
have also been a shoe free agent and what that
(31:23):
package would have looked like. So now he has to
play his first year in New Balance, right, like first
year whoever it is, it could have been the next
or Dallas or late like and now you Nike's a
pony of a half, you know, a quarter billion dollars
coming into the league with your own. Yeah, he's not
gonna stay with new balance. We know that they got.
(31:45):
It's not what you're doing. That's not what we're doing.
That's not what we're doing. No, that's not it. I
mean Steph is with under armour. That's not Steph built
under armour their basketball whole thing. Like, no one has
been able to build old new balances, not with those commercials. Well,
we got next, you got now or whatever that is.
(32:06):
They've been trying to have next one me they got
Jack Harlow and they won't.
Speaker 3 (32:09):
No one cares.
Speaker 1 (32:10):

Uhh uh, they in here trying to knock my hustle.
Speaker 4 (32:58):
Man.
Speaker 2 (32:58):
No, we're not.
Speaker 4 (32:58):
No, no, no, man here trying to knock my hud. Okay,
you know what, because Rob G didn't want to try
hard in high school and he made the wrong choices.
Speaker 3 (33:06):
Rob could have been in an NFL with me. That's why.
That's all I'm saying, Rob G. I'm not gonna let him.
Speaker 1 (33:11):
Do you like that Number one God gifted people, Lebron James.
While I think we all know his incredible work ethic,
also just happened to be one of the greatest athletes
who literally walk on the planet Earth. And however, many
millions and millions of years the Earth has existed because
he's not just tall.
Speaker 3 (33:29):
There's plenty of tall people.
Speaker 1 (33:30):
He was the fastest dude in the league for like
a decade, strongest, fastest, jumped the highest, agile Like, come on, man,
so some of y'all got the lottery, okay, period, Now
do how do you do with the lottery? No, I
believe you actually work with I'm not knocking the working
because there's plenty of do we all know the dude
who could have made it, should have made it in
the neighborhood.
Speaker 3 (33:50):
There's a whole bunch of that.
Speaker 4 (33:51):
I agree, So I'm not knocking at but that's the
whole bunch of six to eight guys who worked security.
Speaker 3 (33:55):
Just FYI, I agree.
Speaker 1 (33:56):
But let me also say this, and this is where
I will be. I'm back on eather side. I do
believe this. While we all wanted to be a pro
athlete and something as a kid, I do believe that
God gifted us all with certain gifts and talents. We
just ignore them because in America we made If you're
not an athlete or entertainer, you know what is that?
Because I believe there's a certain moment where you kind
(34:17):
of know, hm, I could do this. I probably would
be good at this. And I do like you talked
about your fuel when you had a teacher who told
you you're never gonna make it pro one of a
million kids can do that, and that for you clicked
and you said okay, best.
Speaker 4 (34:31):
I said, how come I can't be that one? She
didn't have an answer. So when I say you should
have tried harder in high school. Guess what I didn't do.
I didn't drink. I still don't drink. Spent a lot
of time perfecting something that I said that I wanted
to do at the highest level. And I was a
scholar athlete, so I knew that would increase my chances
(34:51):
of getting a scholarship, no matter how good I was athletically.
So I graduated high school at sixteen because I skipped
two grades. So when I say you should have tried
harder in high school, that's what I'm talking about.
Speaker 3 (35:04):
I had it.
Speaker 4 (35:04):
I'm not now I'm back a team, but I had
an option. I had an option to just be a
regular high school student. Now, let's okay, you want to
go there. We're about to spend this whole next second,
let me go for a minute.
Speaker 1 (35:14):
Run it one of the things you're saying, having not known,
I guarantee you I'm gonna jump out a limit together.
Speaker 3 (35:20):
I'm right.
Speaker 1 (35:22):
Your family dynamic instructure was must have been solid, absolutely not.
No came from a broken home. No, it was broken home.
I didn't even live at home from the age eleven on.
I live with my best friend who we had on
the show today, Deon Taylor.
Speaker 3 (35:38):
That's why he's my brother. So I didn't even from eleven.
Speaker 1 (35:42):
The only reason why I say this, And by the way,
I was just why. I'm trying to figure out what
motivated you differently than maybe Joe blow listening right now
because I'm with you. For me, there was a certain
point all kids, I grew up on to be an
NBA like everybody, and then you realize, Okay, that ain't
gonna happen. For me, that just wasn't gonna happen. I
wanted more and I get that. And I also had
(36:04):
that moment. Poor was not fun. You ain't lying, man, man,
oh man, being poor wasn't funny. To tell you something,
When you grow up, Poe p o and you finally
are doing okay in life, there is nothing like I
ain't going back to that. And I will tell you that.
You asked me today, what is your schedule like? And
I told you because I can't go back, and and
(36:27):
I you know it would act like it was the
worst situation in the world, but it is. Once you
start doing I you I can't. We're not going back.
But I agree with you. I had that moment. I
just got in the radio, and I was trying to
balance these couple I'm gonna do here, we do here?
And I had a lady on the phone get all
snatchedy hey, you're never gonna make it. You never hear
it you you never better bite the hand and feeds
you you're never gonna make it. And I was just
(36:48):
looking okay, okay, and that added motivation, like, really, lady,
oh let me.
Speaker 3 (36:54):
It's the same lady who believed in me.
Speaker 1 (36:56):
He gave me the shot, but was mad because it
was happening to fast for me, and she didn't like
that that like how dare he now it be happening
fast when I like when I could be the one
dictating his future?
Speaker 3 (37:07):
And so I believe you.
Speaker 1 (37:08):
But that's one thing I encourage kids, as you know,
find the thing that matters to you, the thing that
fused you to get you going.
Speaker 3 (37:14):
And often I don't think I don't think we use it.
Speaker 1 (37:18):
I don't think we grow that in kids and and
nurture that in kids enough use we give them the
four or five things they should be, you know what
I mean being a laurier as opposed to what are
you great at? And nurture that and obviously it's a parents'
job too, but I think we could do a better
job of that. All right, Well, there you have it.
Shout out to the uh, the Pacers. I mean, they
(37:40):
made it through these Recommers finals last year. We just
got to ignore them. And they did it again this
year beating the number one seed in the East, the
Calves and uh and now they're there so and Tyrees
Haliburn had an amazing game. He almost thirty in the
second half. And we might have to start puting some
respect on the Pacers name for sure.
Speaker 3 (37:57):
Uh, real quick, what else you got? What didn't show anything?
Speaker 4 (38:00):
Quick before you break hidden Empire Sports Collective?
Speaker 3 (38:03):
Man, we're coming all right, there you have it.
Speaker 7 (38:05):
Man.
Speaker 3 (38:05):
Enjoyed the show, brother, We'll do it again. The Jason
Smith Show with Mike Harmon is coming up next.
Speaker 2 (38:10):
I never miss your radio show.
Speaker 3 (38:12):
I never hear it, so I never miss it. Did
you hear that?
