A lot of stuff to get to in this final
hour of the program, Andy, I want to bring in
Shay because the DJ, the DK metcalf incident in Detroit
last week right with the Steelers where him and the
fan got into it and he took a swing at

the fan, and you know, and all this, he got
suspended by the NFL. He's losing two date, two game checks.
I mean, you know much money that is, and possibly
forty five million from yeah, I mean just a ton
of money for what. But now this fan apparently Shay, Yeah,
he's calling a press conference or something right to give

its side of the story. And then we've heard some
players talk about they need to revise or take a
look at fan conduct codes for.
Speaker 2 (02:17):
Sporting events.
Speaker 4 (02:18):
Yeah, so the fan came out, the fan that was
wearing the blue wig I got punched in the face
by DK. He came out with his attorneys stating that
they will be going on a press con or having
a press conference on Friday, which is tomorrow. Yes, they
announced this yesterday with his attorney.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
And do we really need a press conference for this guy?
You got a lassuit follow exactly a press We want
to have a press conference from some Joe Schmoe who's
trying to get paid because some player took a swipeout him.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
I mean, really, he.
Speaker 5 (02:52):
Wants to know variety. That's why he was that wig.
I saw him on TV had like sunglasses with a
blue wig on.
Speaker 4 (02:57):
And the league has actually came out and started to
respond to this, and players have come out and started
saying some things on the suspension and on the whole
event itself. And this is Aaron Rodgers actually speaking on it.

I think there's a mindset that you paid pay for
a ticket and say whatever the hell you want. I
think there should be some code of conduct. Obviously that
was intentional, and I think there was some celebration afterwards
on his part.

I understand. You know there's been a crazy comments in
my way over the years.

And you know the truth is that that would never happen.

And Andy, you noticed being in the media business, people
talk crazy stuff about me. I see people in public.
You think they walk up to me and say something
crazy to my face? You know, yes, you know that, muscles,
But I will say this Andy and This is where
I'll disagree with the players. The players are over sensitive now.
They don't want if it's racist or vile. You know,

you're talking about somebody's a child or wife, you know,
in a vile way. Andy, I'm with you. Throw that
guy out the building. You can't come in. We're gonna
blackball you from ever coming in for five years, ten.

Years, or until we decide you've learned your ways.

Okay, if you say something racist, yelling out racist stuff
at people, Andy, I'm with you, right, Okay, you're gone.
But if I'm heckling you and I'm in bounds on
all those parameters, I have a right to get under
your skin. Did you see how far DJ Metcalf, DK

Metcalf had to go, Andy to go. It's not like
the NBA with a guy sitting on the bench or
right behind you, right right.
Speaker 5 (04:52):
But this is nothing new. I mean, if you go
back and read sports history and see videos in the
years past, Ted Williams couldn't get along with the fans.
Speaker 7 (05:00):
They boot him. He gave him the one finger salute.
Speaker 5 (05:02):
But there's a difference between heckling and getting in your
face and insulting you. There's a difference because I bit
the games. You bit the games. You sit in the stands,
the guy strikes out, you're a bom You getting all
this money in your book. That's one thing. To go
into a guy's face or hearing distance when he can
hear you, that's another animal. It's completely done. I'm going
to go back in time, if I may. I work

with a gentle giant here on Fox Sports Radio years ago.
His name is Lincoln Kennedy. I love Lincoln to death.
We still keep in touch. Back in November of nineteen
ninety nine, he was playing for the Oakland Raiders. He
and his teammate Charles Woodson. They were playing in Denver
against the Broncos. The fans in Denver with Lloyd snowballs,
and some of the snowballs had batteries in them. And
after that loss, Denver lost that game, Lincoln Kennedy went

into the stands to confront the fan who hit him,
and he beat the living daylights out of this guy.
Speaker 2 (05:50):
All right.
Speaker 5 (05:51):
I still believe that Lincoln maybe should and it's hard
to believe because he's such a gentle giant. He's a gentleman.
But still, in oiler, it was dangerous and maybe he
shouldn't have went there, but sometimes you know, for your safety,
you just do it. And maybe maybe he was.

Right to do it.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
I don't know, but I know, but in my case,
it can never be physical. And here here's my thing. Andy,
that's why they're security police. You point the guy out,
have him taken out of the stadium. You don't go
and get into an altar. You can never attack fans.
I'm serious.

Were you with Detroit when tests went in the stands
and burn?

No, I wasn't that. That was the one game I
missed in like eight years. Can you believe that of
all games? I know, if I told you I went
to every Pristons game, I'm not lying.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
But uh, I wasn't there for that, and they were
all wrong. You can't go on the stands. Now.
Speaker 1 (06:41):
When that kid came down onto the court and Jermaine
O'Neil gave him a knuckle sandwich, what now that's different.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
Andy, He's on the court right coming at you.
Speaker 1 (06:52):
I'm you have a right to protect yourself that I'm
not going to argue with Jermaine O'Neil. Somebody's running at you,
Andy on the court, You're gonna protect yourself.
Speaker 2 (07:02):
You can't go into the stands. But here's my point.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
Don't you remember Westbrook was mad at a fan who
was calling him Westbrook. You remember that, and one of
him thrown out of the game. Thrown out of the
building for Westbrook. How is that? How is there anything
vile or wrong with that? That's somebody taking a play
on your name and being very clever.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
Uh. Draymond Green was mad? What were they calling him?
Speaker 4 (07:29):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (07:31):
Uh? What's her name from from the from the w NBA.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
Oh my god, I'm just all of a sudden forgetting
her name me Bounds, Angel Reaes. They were calling him
Angel Reese because he was missing a lot of shots
and just you know, like getting the rebounds. You remember
they call him me Bounds because she can't make a layup,
but she would get fort rebounds on every mid shot,
you know what I mean.
Speaker 2 (07:53):
So they were calling her that he.
Speaker 1 (07:55):
Got his panties and the bunch was all mad talking
about the same thing.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
And and if fans are.
Speaker 1 (08:01):
Going to be clever, smart, you know what I mean,
come up with something that's catchy and you could take
a player out of their game. So should fans not
waive anything, pom poms, any signs behind the free throw lot,
you know, behind it when guys are taking free throws.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
Andy, do you see what I'm saying. And I'll tell
you something else is fans do that.
Speaker 5 (08:21):
The fans have even gotten close because if you know,
when you were covering the NBA press row was on
court side.
Speaker 2 (08:27):
They got rid of that.
Speaker 5 (08:28):
Oh they shot the press upstairs now and they sell
little seats on court side. You got to Madison Square Garden,
it's all sold seats downstairs. People be sitting on the bench,
right people, So I mean it opens up the possibility
of fans getting in the guy's rear end. I mean,
that's what they do, especially for the visiting team, right.
Speaker 1 (08:47):
That's the part that I don't understand, Like they should
be talking to their union and stop selling those tickets
to people have them so close like that. That's a
real issue. But we don't need a new mode of
conduct for fans. It's the same that should stay in place.
You have a right to heckle. You have a right, Andy,

to come up with something clever to try to get
a player to lose his concentration.
Speaker 2 (09:13):
That should all be fair game.
Speaker 1 (09:15):
Why is that not fair game, don't be viled, don't
be racist.
Speaker 2 (09:20):
That's all you gotta do. Don't come on the cord.

DK went to the railing the fan, didn't come down
on the field. You're exactly right.

He walked over to the fans. There's no doubt about that.
Speaker 5 (09:32):
But I find it very humorous because George Pickens was
traded from the roster of the Pittsburgh Steelers because concerns
about his maturity. Okay, so they pick up DK, and
DK since entering the league, well in twenty nineteen, he
has he's been ejected twice and he's had fifteen fifteen
yard penalties, so he's had his outbursts as well. So
(09:55):
you go for George Pickens who is a loose cannon,
and they get DK Metcalfe, right, I mean, and they're
both great players, they really are, but you got to
reel it in. And I don't know if the team
is to blame with the individuals. I think teams should
have like some sort of a counselor on staff just
to to tell these guys what to do and what
not to do. You know, I was a pr guy
(10:15):
in sports, but on the college and pro level, and
I would I would like, baby, these guys tell them
what to say. Hey, this media guy's gonna ask you this,
do this and to this way. You know, walk away,
don't do this. I don't think they do that anymore.
I really don't. Media people are just concerned with issuing
news press credentials, and that's basically it had statistics, that's
what they do.
Speaker 2 (10:34):
And you got to protect your players.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
And to try to be in the way of reporters
doing their jobs.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
That's what they're right.
Speaker 7 (10:40):
They think that's banning them, that's what they want.
Speaker 1 (10:43):
They really believe that's their job, which is terrible. But
my point, uh is that we don't need a new
code of conduct. It's very clear what you can and
can't do. What we have is a case of players,
athletes who make so much money, their baby, they don't
want to be criticized.
Speaker 2 (11:02):
Andy.
Speaker 1 (11:03):
These are the same guys who were criticizing the media saying,
we don't know what we're doing because we never played
in the league, right, so they didn't. They were like
saying our criticism of them was invalid because we didn't
make it to the league. But those are the same
people who now don't want to hear from Charles Barkley.
They don't want to hear from Kenny Smith. They don't
want criticism. I never understood this. Explain this to me.
(11:26):
You've been in the media for a long time. You
were the first African American reporter in Detroit columnist that
was all right? Sports, they say, you never played the game,
so you can't write about it and talk about it
all right. However, people that write politics and about our
government were never been in government and they're writing about it.
I don't get it. Tell me that because it makes
no sense. And the same thing what I used to
(11:47):
say that athletes who would say something like that, Andy
is I'd say, have you ever written a column for
a major daily newspaper? And they go, no, I haven't.
I said, so you don't know my job, do you?
So you don't know my job and I don't know
your job. Will get along just fine, because that's my
answer to them. You don't know what I do.
Speaker 2 (12:04):
You don't do this. They don't know how to do
it exactly. So that is just an excuse. And again
most of it is based on the idea that they
just don't want to face criticism.
Speaker 1 (12:16):
Fans yelling at you, getting under your skin is a
part of the process, is a part of the action
when they can be funny and come up with things
that make sense. This whole notion that they need to
re examine the fan code of conduct.
Speaker 5 (12:34):
What But you know what, though you'd say the fans
have players have rabbit ears, I'll go one step further.
The coaches are coddling them as well. That's what they do. No,
that toddles place. And I'll give you example. The one
coach I never met, the guy Ben Johnson. I think
it was just past July, when the Bears are in practice.
He threw them off the practice field. He says, you
guys think that's old school, and it's working because the

Bears are winning right now.
Speaker 2 (12:59):
You know.
Speaker 5 (12:59):
Caleb Williams basically said this in July, that Chicago is
the place where quarterbacks die. Remember he said that he
had a book, all right. He changed his tune a
little bit under Ben Johnson. Ben Johnson changed that whole mystique,
the whole culture of the Chicago Bears. Why because he
had a whip, That's why. And he had his tongue
and he used it. Other coaches coddle the Cottley's players,

and the players know it, and they run over him
and they.

Laugh at them.
Speaker 1 (13:24):
It's crazy, all right, eight seven, seven ninety nine on Fox.

go down the list of everybody in the spirit of competition,
and I can probably, I can promise you there's a
lot worse things said on the field of the court
trash talking than any fan could do. But from a
fan perspective, and I've been at games, as long as

you're not attacking anybody personally, as long as you're not
you know, being profane or.

Thing anything like that, and you just are heckling. Because
I've been in crowds and stuff like that, and you're
heckling the opponents. Look, and these guys are out there,
and you got to have a thick skin, and you're
just trying to heckle the opponent. I don't think there's

Matter of fact, keep within.

The guidelines of the game you have to do.

don't want to be criticized. It's just that simple. They

it's worse in college with the fans. They're closer to
number one. I mean, you go to these places, I

mean it's rough. I mean I was at Arizona Arizona State.
They have like these marionettes underneath the foul fel shooting basket.
It's it's amazing. I mean, it's really I mean, it's
not it's not negative as far as racism or personal,
but it's definitely a home field advantage.

supposed to block that stuff out. Really like like you're
you're playing a game for millions of dollars and some
fan who you don't even know, right, has no impact

The guy probably has no life himself. Really, what would
prompt you to go to an athlete during a game

and then you put them in a big situation, you

where they might be able to disappear in a crowd,

Utah and this the light just went off. University of
Cincinnati played Brigham Young and football this year in Cincinnati
and the fans were chanting negativity, negative thoughts about the Mormons,
and I do want to repeat please, they said, and
the athletic director had to send an apology to the

athletic they're Brigham Young. So it's not just a fan,
it's a group of fans that maybe alcohol has a
lot to do with it.

its side of the story. And then we've heard some
players talk about they need to revise or take a
look at fan conduct codes for.

Yeah, so the fan came out, the fan that was
wearing the blue wig I got punched in the face
by DK. He came out with his attorneys stating that
they will be going on a press con or having

And do we really need a press conference for this guy?
You got a lassuit follow exactly a press We want
to have a press conference from some Joe Schmoe who's
trying to get paid because some player took a swipeout him.

His name is Lincoln Kennedy. I love Lincoln to death.
We still keep in touch. Back in November of nineteen
ninety nine, he was playing for the Oakland Raiders. He
and his teammate Charles Woodson. They were playing in Denver
against the Broncos. The fans in Denver with Lloyd snowballs,
and some of the snowballs had batteries in them. And
after that loss, Denver lost that game, Lincoln Kennedy went

into the stands to confront the fan who hit him,
and he beat the living daylights out of this guy.

I still believe that Lincoln maybe should and it's hard
to believe because he's such a gentle giant. He's a gentleman.

I really don't. Media people are just concerned with issuing
news press credentials, and that's basically it had statistics, that's
what they do.

These are the same guys who were criticizing the media saying,
we don't know what we're doing because we never played

want criticism. I never understood this. Explain this to me.

You've been in the media for a long time. You
were the first African American reporter in Detroit columnist that

so you can't write about it and talk about it
all right. However, people that write politics and about our
government were never been in government and they're writing about it.
I don't get it. Tell me that because it makes

a major daily newspaper? And they go, no, I haven't.

most of it is based on the idea that they
just don't want to face criticism.

Fans yelling at you, getting under your skin is a
part of the process, is a part of the action
when they can be funny and come up with things
that make sense. This whole notion that they need to
re examine the fan code of conduct.

What But you know what, though you'd say the fans
have players have rabbit ears, I'll go one step further.
The coaches are coddling them as well. That's what they do. No,
that toddles place. And I'll give you example. The one
coach I never met, the guy Ben Johnson. I think
it was just past July, when the Bears are in practice.
He threw them off the practice field. He says, you
guys think that's old school, and it's working because the

and he used it. Other coaches coddle the Cottley's players,

The Burden
The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary.
