Speaker 1 (00:01):
From the Berkshars to the sound from wherever you live
in MLB America. This is Inside the Parker. You give
us twenty two minutes and we'll give you the scoop
on Major League Baseball. Now here's Baseball Hall of Fame
voter number seveny Rob Parker.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Welcome into the podcast. I'm your host, Rob Parker. What
a great show we have for you today. We will
talk with former Major League pitcher Derek Lowe.

Speaker 3 (00:30):
Remember having what a world series with the Red Sox
plus foul affair.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Give you a little loss of stat geek stuff and
have little betting tips as well. All of that coming
ahead on Inside the Parker.

Speaker 3 (00:41):
So you know what you want to do, stick and
stay America.

Speaker 1 (00:48):
Better to lead off it's getting.

Speaker 4 (00:50):
Robbed and keep them out.

Speaker 1 (00:52):
Rob's hot take on the three biggest stories in Major
League Baseball.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
The Yankees continue to roll, and going into Thursday, they
had won seven in a row and eighteen of their
last twenty two games. And you know what, the pitching
has been spectacular, the Temyra under three going into Thursday.

Speaker 3 (01:13):
But all the talking about.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
The one two punch of one Soto and Aaron Judge
and unbelievable is that these two guys are on pace
for a war of eleven for Judge nine point one
for Sodo according to Baseball Reference, and the combined twenty

(01:39):
point one b war would be higher than any offensive
duo since the regular season went from one hundred and
fifty four games to one hundred and sixty two, and
that was nineteen sixty one.

Speaker 3 (01:57):
Both of these guys have been incredible. And speaking of.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
That nineteen sixty one season was Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris.
They combined for seventeen point four. Think about that, and
you talk about one that's gonna be over twenty. But
it's been jan Soto. What a trade for the Yankees.
He fits in to Yankee Stadium, hitting home runs, hitting

(02:27):
for high average, all those things. He's embraced the fans
in New York and the Bronx, the Dominicans love him,
Yankee fans love him. And Aaron Judge got off to
a bad start, he was injured, got off to a
bad start, and had an unbelievable made to remember, and
it just continues. On Wednesday night he had five RBIs,

(02:49):
including a basis clear and triple. He just continues to
slug and knock him runs, and it's been an incredible
run for him. Judge has twenty one home runs, the
more than anybody else in the game, and Sodo is
tied for fourth with seventeen.

Speaker 3 (03:08):
That's all coming in to Thursday's.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
Action number two.

Speaker 2 (03:13):
It hasn't happened in his major league career, but I
do believe that show Hey Otani will wind up being
the top vote getter in the All Star Game. I
know people are gonna say, first of all, they can't
believe that he's never led the voting right with the
stuff that he's done, including last year, But he was

(03:34):
on the Angels. It's not the same franchise as being
on the Dodgers. The Dodgers are like the Beatles this year.
They're selling out every other ballpark. People are into watching
Otani and see him in person wearing a Dodgers uniform.
I know Aaron Judges having an unbelievable year, Sodo, Rice.

Speaker 3 (03:55):
Harper, those guys are All Star.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
Led and have kept making the All Star team and
have had fans support them. But I really think and
Bryce Harper led it back in twenty seventeen as far
as vote getting.

Speaker 3 (04:16):
But I think I do.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
Twenty twenty two was Aaron Judge, but I do believe
that show Hail tany Wi will take his rightful spot,
even though he's not pitching. This year got off to
a tremendous start. The Dodgers got off to a tremendous start.
Not as good of late, but still he's worth the
price of admission. I think fans are going to vote

(04:40):
show Hay as the top vote getter, and if I'm wrong,
I'll be surprised, but I think I'm gonna be right.
Number three, Major League Baseball is going across the Big
Pond again for the London Series twenty twenty four.

Speaker 3 (04:58):
It's that London's the Phillies and the Mets will play.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
A series there in front of Europeans, in front of
the old country. Baseball has been doing this, and you know, fans,
you always feel bad when you take games away from
the fans, whether this would have been games in New
York or Philadelphia. But I do understand what Major League

(05:24):
Baseball is trying to do in winning more fans. The
world has become smaller. People watch stuff on television, on
social media, all kinds of stuff so they can watch
games and buy merchandise and all that, and it's just
a it's a way of becoming more global. So it's

(05:48):
not the best thing if you're a Mets fan or
a Phillies fan and you want to go and you
can't afford to go, and they just took away a
few games from American soil. But I do understand it
as long as they don't get ridiculous and start taking
a lot of games away.

Speaker 3 (06:02):
But one series or so, to me, is not the
end of the world. So major League Baseball again. We'll
be in London. We'll look for that this weekend and
see what that plays like.

Speaker 2 (06:13):
Every time I watch it, it does feel like it's
in a foreign country.

Speaker 3 (06:16):
Just feels weird.

Speaker 2 (06:18):
I don't know if it's because I know it's in
a foreign country or because it looks weird being in
a foreign country.

Speaker 1 (06:25):
Here comes the Big Interview. Listen and learn.

Speaker 3 (06:29):
It's so good.

Speaker 2 (06:31):
Now let's welcome into the podcast former Major league pitcher
Derek Lowe. Of course, broken in nineteen ninety seven with
Seattle and was a two time All Star, won the
World Series in two thousand and four with the Red Sox.

Speaker 3 (06:45):
Mister Derek Lowe, Welcome to the podcast.

Speaker 4 (06:48):
How are you, hey, how are we doing? Thanks for
having me? All good?

Speaker 3 (06:51):
Oh yeah, absolutely all good. And Derek, let's do this first.

Speaker 2 (06:57):
So you're appearing on the podcast on behalf of the
twenty twenty four American Century Championship, which will be airing
on the Golf Channel, Peacock and NBC July twelve to fourteenth.

Speaker 3 (07:09):
Tell us about the golf and then we'll get into baseball.

Speaker 4 (07:12):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (07:12):
Man, it's it's it's it's our masters. It's I'll be fortunate.
I think it's my eleventh or twelve year getting invited.
You know, there's top entertainers, top athletes, great events.

Speaker 4 (07:25):
Every night, but just the competition, it's just so much fun.

Speaker 5 (07:29):
It's you know, you've got the great venue at Lake Tahoe,
at Edgewood, you know, and I've been able fortunate to
have a few top showings. But what Steph Curry did
last year was just absolutely epic. You know, having the
egle last hole against Marty Fish pulls it off. It's
just a tremendous, tremendous honor to go out there and

(07:50):
represent yourself in American Century and they just do a
phenomenal job and treat us great for which is a
week that we all can't wait for it to come.

Speaker 2 (08:00):
I'm looking at the list here and my god, of
course you'll be playing John Smoltz, Roger Clemens, Albert Poolhols,
A rod Travis Kelcey, Charles Barkley, Aaron Rodgers all scheduled
to participate, and you're expecting crowds of fifty thousand attendance. Man,

(08:20):
what a list that is. Who's the best golfer out
of those guys I named, I'm going to guess his Smoltzy.

Speaker 4 (08:26):
Yeah, I mean you got Mark Molder.

Speaker 5 (08:29):
I think he's one of three times Marty Fish tennis
stud that he is.

Speaker 4 (08:33):
He's won a couple of times. You know, it's so
nerve wracking.

Speaker 5 (08:38):
Like you said, I mean, you don't play in front
of you know, twenty five twenty thousand people every day.
It kind of get gets excited. I think the more
you play in it, the easier easier becomes. But you know,
at the end of the day, yes, you want to win,
but you want to represent yourself.

Speaker 4 (08:53):
You know. Again, they have a tremendous, tremendous showing.

Speaker 5 (08:57):
They do a great job with American Centry, bringing some
of their top clients out there, so you're not just
it's not just golf, it's it's entertaining. And you know again,
it's just it's our favorite week.

Speaker 3 (09:07):
And I hope to contend this year and a little
prize money never hurt.

Speaker 2 (09:11):
Seven hundred and fifty thousand in prize money, one hundred
and fifty thousand to the winner.

Speaker 3 (09:16):
You could We could all use that, couldn't we.

Speaker 1 (09:18):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (09:18):
Yeah, yeah, you try to keep that out of your
mind when you if somehow you're in contention, because anytime
you start putting money into our golf game's not gonna
work out well.

Speaker 4 (09:26):
But yeah, they if you do play well, there is
an award at the end.

Speaker 3 (09:31):
No doubt.

Speaker 2 (09:31):
All right, let's switch to some baseball something you know
very well. As I said, two time All Star Derek
Lowe joining us here on inside the Parker.

Speaker 3 (09:42):
You pitch for the Yankees in twenty twelve, you sure did.
You pitched for.

Speaker 2 (09:47):
The Mariners, Red Sox, Dodgers, Braves, Cleveland back then, the Indians,
the Yankees and the Rangers. But I want to ask
you about the Yankees because I'm looking at the team E.
R Ray and Derek. Here we are in June is
too seven nine two point seven nine, uh e r

(10:10):
Ray and their best pitcher isn't even hasn't even pitched
yet this year.

Speaker 5 (10:15):
Yeah, and and probably one of the most friendly hitting
parks on all baseball.

Speaker 4 (10:21):
Yeah, what they're doing is just unbelievable.

Speaker 5 (10:23):
You know, obviously at you know, the trade for one
Soto in the offseason was just tremendous.

Speaker 4 (10:30):
You know, you know, he's a top flight player and.

Speaker 5 (10:32):
You kind of put him in a in a big
city like New York.

Speaker 4 (10:35):
You knew he would shine, and he is. But you
can't win without pitching.

Speaker 5 (10:39):
I mean, you you can't try to win six or
five every single day, even though they have an offense
that could do it. They're they're just they're pitching at
a high level. Everything's clicking.

Speaker 4 (10:49):
You know.

Speaker 5 (10:49):
Baseball is unique this year because I think last time
I checked, there is only I think ten teams that
are above five hundred and all of its fall.

Speaker 4 (10:57):
So it's kind of a unique year.

Speaker 5 (10:59):
Yankees, you know, the Phillies Dodgers kind of pulled away
as the top of the class.

Speaker 4 (11:03):
But you got a pitch and it's not just New York.

Speaker 5 (11:06):
You know, Philly's doing the same thing and Dodgers have
always pitched, so you got to have it.

Speaker 2 (11:10):
Yeah, it is pretty amazing. One more question on the Yankees.
Aaron Judge got off to a horrendous start, you know,
and I know he was banged up in spring training,
but man, what a month of May.

Speaker 3 (11:22):
He's turned on and I.

Speaker 4 (11:24):
Don't know, I mean, I don't know.

Speaker 3 (11:27):
He hit sixty two again, I.

Speaker 4 (11:28):
Mean, I mean again.

Speaker 5 (11:30):
You know, he's obviously immensely talented. He has you know,
again it's a great hitters park. You know, he can
just fick the ball to the right field like there's
no one's business. But you know, you got to give
him credit. You know, you're in a big city. You know,
he just became the captain. There's a lot of pressure
to that doesn't start off the way i'd imagine he wanted.
But he you know, there's such a self belief in himself.

(11:51):
He knew he was gonna turn around, and he did
and just put up an epic May. And you're probably
gonna unfortunately for a lot of teams, it's gonna it's
not gonna slow down. You know that that tandem of
you know one and you know, Stanton thrown in there
and then Judge is just very, very tough to pitch
to him. And yeah, I mean, who's to say he

(12:11):
can't hit sixty again or what God knows what, But
you know, good for him not to panic, believe in
yourself and in a way they go no doubt.

Speaker 2 (12:19):
And the other team too, coming into Thursday with the
same record as a Yankees forty four and nineteen. The
Philadelphia Phillies were off the last two years.

Speaker 3 (12:28):
They got off the slow starts.

Speaker 2 (12:30):
They made the World Series two years ago, they had
a chance to go last year, got upset by the Diamondbacks.

Speaker 3 (12:36):
But this year they're off to a great start. What's
going on with the.

Speaker 5 (12:41):
Philly Yeah, I think the same way, you know, with
the Zach Wheeler and Aaron Nolan at the top of
the rotation. Ranger, I can't I think, I don't want
to mess up his last name. He's having a phenomenally year.
But it's not just Bryce Harper, you know, And historically
me think about maybe the Phillies as Bryce Harper and
everyone else, but Alex Baum having a phenomenal year and

(13:01):
they're just clicking.

Speaker 4 (13:02):
You know.

Speaker 5 (13:03):
It's again, they know how to win over there. They've
done it for a long time. They have great management
and they're just steamrolling guys. And when you get that
confidence with the talent that they have, and again you're
not leaning on one guy. It's a new guy every day,
which is great for teams. They don't believe they have
to just wait for Bryce Harper to do what he does.
But you know, I want to stay shout out to

(13:25):
the Cleveland Guardians. They don't get a lot of love
over there in the American Central. You know, what they're
doing is amazing, you know, and no disrespect to that team,
but you have you probably asked a lot of people
name me five guys off that team, You'd be hard pressed.

Speaker 4 (13:37):
To do it.

Speaker 5 (13:38):
So I just want to give a shout out to
them for what they're doing, no doubt.

Speaker 2 (13:42):
About it, because they have forty wins coming into Thursday,
and they have forty wins like the Phillies and the
Yankees over forty. Let me ask you this question about
the Texas Rangers, who are unbelievable in the postseason.

Speaker 3 (13:56):
A year ago won the World Series. But this is crazy.

Speaker 2 (13:59):
Like Bruce Bochie, who I think is one of the
all time great managers. Obviously he's won four World Series,
he's been the five with three different teams.

Speaker 3 (14:09):
But every time he wins the World Series, the next
year they don't.

Speaker 2 (14:12):
Make the playoffs because see, like if the Rangers are
in second place but they're under five hundred, is that
Isn't that weird that that could happen.

Speaker 5 (14:22):
Yeah, it makes no sense and unfortunately, and there's a
long track record of doing it. It ain't just once or twice.
But you got to give me the ultimate credit for actually,
you know, winning the World Series. But I don't know,
you know, I've never played for I met the man.
He's a great gentleman. No s how to motivate, but
you know, it's it's hard to it's hard to repeat.
I mean I truly believe that. But you know, they've

(14:44):
definitely had some injuries. There's no doubt about that, you know,
especially in the starting rotation. But no, I mean, you
gotta believe in teams that you know. It's the same
thing with Houston. You know, you gotta even though they're
not both teams aren't off the great starts. You gotta
believe that they're too talented, they know how to win.
You know, people don't understand. I mean one hundred and
sixty two games. It really is a marathon, and those

(15:06):
teams won't panic. But no, I get it, and I
imagine they're scratching their heads too, because you look at that,
you know it's pretty much the same team that had
last year, and you know they're always expecting them to
turn around.

Speaker 4 (15:17):
There's no doubt about it.

Speaker 5 (15:18):
The cream of the crop, as they say, normally rises
to the top, and I would expect the same down
there in Texas.

Speaker 2 (15:23):
Yeah, and Houston, the Astros they don't win at home,
you know, remember last year in the playoffs. They couldn't
win in the playoffs this year coming into Thursday, seventeen
and eighteen at home, just under five hundred, and I
don't know.

Speaker 3 (15:38):
Is this over the run? That the run that this
team had.

Speaker 2 (15:43):
Obviously they won two World Series, one that some fans
don't want to count, but one that they count, right,
Is this over?

Speaker 4 (15:52):
No, man, I don't know, And it really is head scratching.
What happens when they get home?

Speaker 5 (15:59):
I mean again, I find it as a good hitters park,
you know, and they have tremendous offense. I don't get it,
you know, I can't say I've seen a ton of
their games this year, but again, you know, I mean,
every all runs do have to end, and I'm not
saying that it's gonna end this year. They have the talent,
they have the guys, but I mean it's a it's

(16:20):
a head scratcher, you know, to be under five hundred.
But again, until these teams falter, you know, you gotta
believe in the fact that at some point sometime during
this long season they're gonna turn it around.

Speaker 3 (16:33):
No doubt.

Speaker 2 (16:34):
All Right, once again, Derek Lowe the twenty twenty four
American Century Championship. If people want to get out there
and check you guys out July twelve through the fourteenth,
Is there a website or a place that people can
find it for me?

Speaker 5 (16:51):
You know, I think you just go to the American
Century website and there they'lb tickets. But no, I mean
it's it was an unbelievable turnout last year. Know, they
sold out on the weekend. So if you are looking
or you're gonna be in the area, I would be proactive,
get on there, get some tickets.

Speaker 4 (17:07):
You know, it's it's I don't know what they charge you.

Speaker 5 (17:09):
But again, if you're in the area, if you want
to go on a great vacation, look at the water,
get up and close to some of the you know,
the greatest celebrities and entertainers in the world.

Speaker 4 (17:19):
I highly recommend it.

Speaker 2 (17:21):
All right, Derek Lowe, my man, thanks for the knowledge.
Appreciate you coming on the podcast and we'll see you
down the road.

Speaker 4 (17:28):
You gotta have a good one. Thank you very much.

Speaker 1 (19:31):
It's time for the Pocket Protector Centrum. The analytic numbers
you need to know?

Speaker 2 (19:36):
Well, maybe Anthony Masterson is his name.

Speaker 3 (19:41):
BS analytics is his game. What do you got for me, Anthony.

Speaker 7 (19:44):
Of all the great stories coming out of the Bronx
this season, it's not just Aaron Judge or Juan Soto
who has been propelling this team to one of the
top records in the AL. It's a lightly heralded twenty
six year old pitcher who would probably be in Triple
A the Yankees were healthy. This is about Luis Heel.
Through the first twelve starts of the season, Heel has
been one of the best pitchers in baseball, much less
the best rookie, going eight to one, with an AL

(20:07):
best one point eight two ERA eighty five k's in
just sixty nine and a third, and a league leading
opponent average of one to twenty nine. That one twenty
nine average is the second lowest through twelve starts in
the Live Ball ERA since nineteen twenty, only behind Jacob
de Gram in twenty twenty one. He's won each of
his last seven starts and only allowed three total runs
in forty four and two thirds in that time, allowing

(20:30):
just fifteen hits. The last rookie to win seven straight
starts before Heel was Stephen Matz for the Mets eight
years ago, and the last to win eight straight the
Yankees of Von Nova in twenty eleven. Historically, Hels tried
to put together one of the best rookie seasons ever
in that live ball era. The lowest opponent average for
a rookie was Jose Fernandez in twenty thirteen at oneint

(20:50):
eighty two. There also has been a rookie starter with
a sub to era since the mound was lowered in
nineteen sixty nine, and only four rookies have ever struck
out eleven per nine, and their last names are legendary
would goodin Nomo and only Fernando Valezuela won Rookie of
the Year and Cy Young in the same season. If

(21:11):
the World Series drought ends this year for the Yankees,
they're gonna have heel to think that ball.

Speaker 1 (21:18):
It was a big week in the big leagues. Who's
a don't believe? Is it foul? Or is it fair?
And Now from mlbdbro dot com, here's JR gamball.

Speaker 2 (21:35):
Following Wednesday's nine to nothing lost to the Boston Red Sox.
The Atlanta Braids are now eight games behind the Philadelphia
Phillies in the National League. He's coming into Thursday, JR.
Is it foul or fair to say that the Atlanta
Braids can't win a World Series without Ronald Acuna Junior.

Speaker 1 (21:59):
Fair It's a bit ball.

Speaker 6 (22:01):
Now some people will say they won it without Acunya
in twenty twenty one, so they can do it again
by making a few shrewd moves and adding on to
a team that's already talented.

Speaker 1 (22:12):
This year's team, with.

Speaker 6 (22:13):
Michael Harris the second, the powerful matt olsen Isi Albiz
and Marcel Ozuna, who's crushing with seventeen home runs, is
probably more talented than that World Series team even without Acunya. Currently,
with the exception of Ozuna, none of the other stars
are really performing up to snuff. Austin Riley isn't the

(22:35):
hitter he was last season either. However, the Phillies now
they have an incredible team and some solid pitching and
seem to be on a mission to get Bryce Harper
his first ring right now without the twenty twenty three
MVP Acunya and a guy capable of taking over a
week of the season with his legs and power back.

(22:56):
As Acunya peak last season, becoming the first player in
history with forty plus homers and seventy steals, the All
Star Break can't come soon enough for the Braves, who
need to regroup. They're five and six in their last
eleven games after getting smoked by the Boston Red Sox
nine to nothing on Wednesday. Saving grace might be, however,

(23:17):
the pitching led by Chris Sale that's eighth in all
of baseball. If they're gonna make a run, the pitching
is gonna be important, and they have the arms to
do it in the second half. The loss suspenses Strider, however,
will prove to be huge as the season goes along,
especially if the Braves try to make a run. But
right now without Acunya, they're just not built for World

(23:40):
Series success.

Speaker 1 (23:43):
Turn money into more money. Now it's time for betting
on the basis with Dave Gascott. Love that money, Love
that money.

Speaker 3 (23:50):
Rob.

Speaker 8 (23:50):
What's up man? Another weekend of baseball. Happy to be
here with you. Lots of action on a front and
night as well. Dodgers and Yankees from the Bronx. I
think this is gonna be a fantastic matchup, gonna be
an Apple TV seven oh five Eastern, four oh five Pacific.
Give me the over in this one between the Dodgers
and Yankees. I think there will be a lot of
fireworks in this contest. Logan Webb in the San Francisco

(24:10):
Giants take their act to Texas against the Rangers. Rangers
have been sub five hundred so far this season, so
the Giants. But I'll take Texas at home to get
things done here. Meanwhile, Cardinals and Rockies from Saint Louis.
Lanceln's on the bump for the home team two and
three record ERA at three twenty three. I'll take Saint
Louis against the lowly Rockies from the Mile High City.

(24:31):
That'll do it for a Friday night. Rob, have yourself
a good weekend. We'll chat again.

Speaker 1 (24:35):
Now bring in the closer. Right, Here's why MLB is
better than the NFL or NBA, and it isn't even close.

Speaker 3 (24:47):
Reason number one hundred and fifty five. While Major League
Baseball is.

Speaker 2 (24:51):
Better than the NBA and better than the NFL, it
happened Wednesday night in Arlington when the Tigers were beaten
by the Rangers nine to one. There was just a
special moment that happened where Tiger's rookie Justin Henry Malloy
got his first major league hit.

Speaker 3 (25:12):
And guess what it was?

Speaker 2 (25:14):
A major league It was a home run, but the
bigger part was that his parents were there. The twenty
four year old had his mom, Jacqueline and Henry in attendance.
They had their reaction of them so thrilled that their
son hit his first major league home run, got his
first major league hit. The Tigers broadcast team caught it

(25:35):
and it went viral over the internet. Those are those moments,
you know, when you think about baseball and you're going
to play and your mom or dad said, get some
hits for me, or get a knock. Your grandparents I
can remember those days leaving to go play ball or something,
or when they see you when you're in your uniform,
they would always ask you, did you get any knocks?

Speaker 3 (25:57):
Did you get a hit today?

Speaker 2 (25:59):
You know, it was like that thing, and can you
imagine your first major league hit being a home run?

Speaker 3 (26:04):
That's pretty special and your mom and dad were.

Speaker 2 (26:07):
Able to see it because I think he started out
zero to eight in his major league career, but he
wound up getting the home run. In the words of
New York TV legend the late Bill Jorgensen, thanking you
for your time this time until next time.

Speaker 3 (26:29):
Rob Parker out.

Speaker 1 (26:31):
He can't, Gavin. This could be an inside the Parker.

Speaker 4 (26:34):
See you next week, same bat time, from same Matt's station.
