Speaker 1 (00:01):
From the Berkshars to the sound from wherever you live
in MLB America. This is inside the Parker. You give
us twenty two minutes and we'll give you the scoop
on major League Baseball.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Now.

Speaker 1 (00:13):
Here's Baseball Hall of Fame voter number fifty seven, Rob Parker.

Speaker 3 (00:20):
Come on, I've been covering Major League Baseball for almost
forty years now, in New York, in Cincinnati, in Detroit,
in LA.

Speaker 4 (00:30):
I love this game.

Speaker 3 (00:32):
Let's go. Welcome into the podcast. I'm your host, Rob Parkin.
What a great show we have for you today. Baseball
Division playoffs or or underway. Will dive into all of that.
Plus my latest appearance on MLB Now MLB Network. Some

(00:54):
good stuff there. Me and Brian Kenny get at it
that and much more. Let's go better up.

Speaker 1 (01:01):
To lead off. It's getting rocked to keep them on.

Speaker 3 (01:05):
Rob's hot take.

Speaker 1 (01:06):
On the three biggest stories in Major League Baseball. Number one,
it should come as.

Speaker 5 (01:13):
No surprise that we're not going to see the New
York Yankees in the ALCS or possibly the World Series.
They get knocked out on Wednesday night by the Toronto
Blue Jays.

Speaker 3 (01:27):
Remember they tied for the division.

Speaker 5 (01:29):
The only reason the Blue Jays had the better home
field advantage was they beat the Yankees and the tiebreaker
so they had the same record, and the Yankees go
down disappointing for a lot of people. Obviously, people had
high expectations whenever the Yankees are involved. People are looking
for the Yankees to win a World Series, which they

(01:50):
haven't done since two thousand and nine. It's a drought.
It's an official drought. It's been long. They've had some chances,
the cheating Astros beat them. Has to go to World
Series at one point, we know the Astros cheated during that.

Speaker 3 (02:06):
They lose to the Dodgers last year with a chance
to maybe win a World Series that didn't happen.

Speaker 5 (02:13):
And now here in the divisional round they lose to
the Blue Jays in four games.

Speaker 3 (02:18):
You know they the Blue Jays do a bullpen game.
The Yankees couldn't hit, couldn't get enough hits, couldn't get
any timely hits. That's what baseball is about. They left
a million guys on base. It's about timely hitting, it's
about defense. There was a Jazz Chisholm era that led
to two earned runs, so they possibly uh would have

(02:40):
lost three to two instead of five to two, or
any way you look at it. Put it ain't the
end of the world. I mean, it's a good team.

Speaker 5 (02:48):
They had some injuries, they lost some pitching people we
all know Garret Cole was lost, and they somehow still
were able to tie for the top of the al
least beat the Red Sox to hated Red Sox and
the three game series. Remember they lost game one. They
won the next two games to win that series. That

(03:09):
was a big deal and people had high hopes that
they could beat the Blue Jays. But they're starting pitching
wasn't good enough. And starting pitching eer is.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
You know, a chubby fourteen fifteen whatever it was, eighteen.
It was just awful. You can't win what that kind
of pitching.

Speaker 5 (03:31):
As for the Blue Jays, they move on. It's a nondescript,
weird team to me, like they don't have anything built.
They got knocked out the last couple of years in
the Wild Card. They couldn't win a game. It's just
a weird team. The bullpen had some issues. Not the
greatest starting pitching.

Speaker 3 (03:52):
They hit the ball, get timely hits, they can hit
home runs, and they usually feel well. They made some
miscuse against the Yankees that cost him Game three. That
was unusual.

Speaker 5 (04:04):
But do I see them winning the World Series. I don't.
It would be interesting if they were able to make it,
depending on who comes out of that Tigers Mariner series.
But a lot of disappointed people in New York, a
lot of happy people in Toronto.

Speaker 3 (04:22):
And it is what it is.

Speaker 5 (04:23):
The Blue Jays hit better against the Yankees, starting pitching,
and that was it.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
And when it comes to Judge, the guy bat at
five hundred, I'm just going to end it at that.

Speaker 5 (04:32):
I'm not going to make a conversation coming off that
bad era he made against the Dodgers last year in
Game five, where he dropped an easy pop up which
led to five on our runs and the Yankees losing
that game.

Speaker 3 (04:45):
Judge bounced back at an MVP type season and batted
five hundred in the playoffs and had an iconic home
run that people will always remember, hitting the foul poll
in Game three against the Blue Jays. So Jay's move on.

Speaker 6 (05:01):
Yankees are out number two the Dodgers in Phillies Game
four in Los Angeles on Thursday, Dodgers trying to win
move on to the NLCS.

Speaker 3 (05:16):
Phillies trying to extend their season coming into the playoffs.
The Phillies with.

Speaker 5 (05:21):
A favorite to win the World Series, not just to
get to the NLCS, but to win the World Series.
Of course, two bad losses at home, and I just
wonder Dodgers got lucky. In Game two, Phillies ran themselves
out of a potential big inning comeback against.

Speaker 3 (05:38):
The Dodgers bullpen. The Dodger bullpen still scares me. I
think the Phillies still have a chance to beat the
Dodgers in this series. I really do.

Speaker 5 (05:48):
Clinton Kershaw got knocked around like a rag doll yesterday
coming out of the bullpen in a two run game
that blew it open for the Phillies.

Speaker 3 (05:57):
Got Sanchez going for the Phillies against Glass. Now in
Game four, think about it.

Speaker 5 (06:05):
The Phillies came to Los Angeles and beat Yamamoto, who
had been like spectacular. I can't even you can't even
say he had been good.

Speaker 7 (06:16):
He was.

Speaker 3 (06:17):
He had been spectacular coming in. He had eight straight
starts with four or fewer hits allowed and a scoreless
streak of twenty four straight inning Like that, how's dominant
he had been? And yet somehow, some way, they.

Speaker 5 (06:34):
Got to him three earned runs in four innings.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
That I mean doesn't sound like a lot.

Speaker 5 (06:40):
That's a lot considering how great Yamamoto had been for
the Dodgers.

Speaker 3 (06:45):
So that's a big chip for the Phillies to buck
the odds there. Aaron Nola was the start. All I
kept hearing all day was Aaron Nola starting. Aaron Nola'
is the opener. How are they gonna beat Yamamoto? They
they want they beat the game that Yamamodos started. So
the Phillies are. Phillies are in good shape if they

(07:07):
can take this and bring it back to Philly. They
should have won Game two, should have won Game two
and it would be two to one, and they didn't
have a chance to be closing out the Dodgers today. Instead,
on Thursday, they need to tire to extend the series
and bring a Game five back to Los.

Speaker 1 (07:26):
Angeles, number three.

Speaker 8 (07:29):
This will be interesting. The Tigers and the Mariners Game
five on Friday in Seattle. Detroit looked dead through game four.

Speaker 3 (07:40):
Through six innings, they had nothing to god, they were
losing three nothing, and they stormed back with nine straight runs.
They win the game nine to three, force a fifth
and deciding game in Seattle, and with your a's on
the mound and Tark School, will you feel good? Like,
if you're the Tigers, it's set up perfect. We got
our guy and we'll be able to win. Remember Tarak

(08:03):
Schoolbul started Game two and the Tigers didn't win that game.
And somehow, somehow.

Speaker 5 (08:13):
Tark schoolbls owing three against the Mariners with an ERA
of almost five.

Speaker 3 (08:18):
Really as good as this guy's been, Like, nobody has
that against him. So that'll be interesting to see how
that plays out and whether or not the Mariners can
beat Tarrek Schoubel. And then here's the other thing that's
scary when you score that many runs and you're the Tigers.
They don't score for Tarak schoobl did they did they

(08:42):
unload their gun in Game four with the nine runs,
you know, and then they're gonna wind up getting none
or one run in Seattle. Like that's the scary part
whenever you score that many runs. So that's one that
really really is gonna be interesting to see. The Mariners
have been trying for ever to get there and get

(09:02):
a shot at a.

Speaker 5 (09:04):
World Series, and here's an opportunity. They're at home against
the Tigers. Remember the Tigers won Game one in Seattle
and then Mariners won Game two against and the start
that school had, so this will be interesting. I'm gonna
pick the Mariners to advance and move on. The Tigers

(09:27):
have been just too up and down Feaster Famine for
me to feel confident. I don't know which team, and
they don't score runs for targ school. Well, in that
game two, he would have gave up two solo home
runs and didn't get a W.

Speaker 3 (09:41):
Tigers had the tighter game late when he was out,
and then they lost late three to two, but they scuffled.
They don't score for him. And I remember against in
Game five last year in Cleveland, the Guardians beat schoobl

(10:03):
in that game.

Speaker 5 (10:05):
So when it comes to big games, big moments, here's
an opportunity for school bol. Maybe he has to picture
a shutout or no hitter or I know it sounds ridiculous,
or one hitter in order for the Tigers to win.
But I'm gonna go with the Mariners in this. That's
gonna be a game I can't wait to sit down
and watch on Friday. So a lot of great baseball
actions still going on, and when it comes to the

(10:27):
Cubs and Brewers again. The Brewers came into this postseason
losers of eleven of thirteen postseason games. They have a
two to one lead against the Cubs. Cubs finally got
into the series with a win on Wednesday. It's two
to one. Cubs trying to tie the series at two
to two on Thursday and force a game five in Milwaukee.

Speaker 3 (10:52):
I like Milwaukee.

Speaker 5 (10:53):
I think that they'll wrap this up finally, maybe they'll
get over the hump. I was afraid that maybe Milwaukee
had that they had peaked too early when they had
that twenty nine and four stretch and they won all
those games.

Speaker 3 (11:09):
Baseball has a way of even themselves out. But it's
just not the case. They won their.

Speaker 5 (11:17):
First two games at home, they got their finally after
so many disappointing postseason games, and now they just need
to close out the Cubs and move on and then
wait for the winner of the Dodgers and Phillies series.

Speaker 3 (11:32):
So a lot to go on. I like the Brewers
on Thursday. I also like the Mariners on Friday. And
I'm picking the Phillies on Thursday to win two games
back to back at Dodger Stadium and force a fifth
and deciding game in Philadelphia.

Speaker 7 (11:54):

Darley, Darley Yankee, Let's go.

Speaker 2 (14:33):
Let's do again, every single one of you. Bull pen game,
Nathan Lucas, Miles Straw. You it takes everybody every day.
Start spreading the news.

Speaker 11 (14:50):
Wow, John Sterling starts spreading the news, taking hits.

Speaker 4 (14:54):
Left and right.

Speaker 11 (14:55):
Rob Parker was a New York at one point in
his life. Rob that that's pretty cold. That's cold, all right,
Toronto's been waiting a while. That's pretty cold. Postgame, I was.

Speaker 3 (15:03):
Gonna say, you know, when you're a franchise like the
Blue Jays where haven't been relevant since the nineties, A
enjoy every minute of it.

Speaker 11 (15:11):
Oh wow, Okay, you know, by the way I showed,
they've been winning eight ninety two ninety one games. They
haven't won in October. But a lot of that is flucush, Rob, like,
we know this right.

Speaker 3 (15:22):
Yeah, but we're talking about the nineties. It's been a
long time, so they should celebrate. I'm not mad at them,
but I'm just.

Speaker 11 (15:29):
Like, since winning since winning it all, by the way,
Yankees haven't won it all since two thousand and nine.

Speaker 4 (15:35):
You know, yeah, but we're.

Speaker 3 (15:35):
Talking about the nineties compared to two thousand and nine.

Speaker 11 (15:39):
I'm not saying they're unequal footing, but they got their shots.
And all right, for the Yankees, level of disappointment because
it feels like it's disappointing, yet they were tied for.

Speaker 4 (15:47):
The most wins in the week.

Speaker 3 (15:49):
Yeah, I know people are disappointed and they look at it.
It's a failure to the Yankees Again, another year, didn't
get to the World Series, didn't win a World Series.
I'm gonna tell people to pump the brakes on all
this and be honest with themselves. How many teams can
lose their ace Garrett Cole for the entire season and

(16:10):
it's not an excuse becase it's just fact you lose
a picture of that caliber. I know people want to
make it like, oh yeah, Garrett Cole can be lost
for the year and it doesn't matter. Put the next
guy in and all that. It's a reason he makes
the gazillion dollars. It's a reason why he's won Cy Young,
you know, like, there's a reason and the team el

(16:32):
Ray wouldn't be eighteen the starting pitching in this series
if Garret Cole was there. So I'm just saying, considering
what they.

Speaker 4 (16:41):
Went through, they had a good year.

Speaker 3 (16:43):
It's disappointing ending, no doubt, but it ain't the end
of the war.

Speaker 4 (16:47):
In a vacuum.

Speaker 11 (16:49):
I know what you're saying, coming off last year where
a team that makes the World Series, like you've won
the Pennant. I like to say that you win a pennant,
you're not just a World Series loser. But the way
the Yankees lost in that Game five and the fifth
and that it's coming off the heels of that.

Speaker 4 (17:04):
So now it's another year.

Speaker 11 (17:05):
Of Wow, we have all this firepower and what's it
really for? All right, let me ask about Aaron Judge.
Is he redeemed now? Hit five hundred, slug seven hundred?
Is the playoff thing behind him?

Speaker 3 (17:17):
It should be? I mean, people, he can't hit in
the postseason. I don't know how much better you can
hit in that situation. And I know it didn't amount
to anything because they didn't advance. But that home run
he hit is an iconic home run.

Speaker 4 (17:29):
Yeah, I don't watch a big home run that counts
won that game that counts.

Speaker 3 (17:34):
Yeah, don't forget last year and nobody people forget this
as well, because they lost that game against Class A.
He hit the two run home run, right, and then
Stan followed that up with a home run that was
a big home run in a big spot as well,
but nobody talks about that or remembers that he against
one of the best closers.

Speaker 11 (17:53):
The way they lost went solo hit that home run?
When did judge He Judge had a home run later
in the World Series is breaking out? No no, no,
no home run against class It was back to back
and then Stan hit one.

Speaker 4 (18:06):
Go back b kat it.

Speaker 11 (18:08):
You're right if you're saying everyone's forgotten that, I forgot
it all right, let me ask you this jazzism second base.
Anybody can make an error, and the guy played excellent
defense in the previous round and was base running. We
gave him all sorts of credit. But this ball bounce
off his glove, and it turns out he's wearing a
different glove from the previous game because it's a different color.

Speaker 4 (18:28):
Is this swag over substance?

Speaker 11 (18:29):
Is this some new glove that he's not used to
and he's using it for I don't even know what reason.

Speaker 4 (18:36):
No, just you know what I mean.

Speaker 3 (18:38):
People can nitpick and say, oh, yeah, it's the glove
or where he made an error. People make error. He's
a fine defensive player's defensive player.

Speaker 11 (18:47):
That's a big that's a big play to miss, right,
that's a double play ball. It's a one run game.
They gain scored twice. They scored two runs off that.

Speaker 3 (18:56):
I get it. It's a big it's a big error.
But people make aer in games.

Speaker 4 (19:01):
I mean the idea, what's a different glove? Do you
know what I mean? A drop can?

Speaker 11 (19:05):
We write everybody makes errors, we don't show those on
Basebally plays because guys make physical errors.

Speaker 4 (19:10):
It happens. Everybody does. Brooks Robinson made errors.

Speaker 11 (19:12):
However, I don't see this is a guy who was
talking about his new walk up music.

Speaker 4 (19:18):
Last year when they were down.

Speaker 11 (19:19):
Two oh but going back to Yankee Stadium and his
new sneakers that he was dropping for the World Series.
He was on intentional talk talking about it like so
when you say, hey, he's super relaxed and he goes
out and he plays. But when you're super relaxed and
thinking of other things, you go out make a big error,
you gotta wear it a little bit.

Speaker 10 (19:36):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (19:37):
This is where I'm going to push back and disagree.
I think it's easy. After the fact that Boston Series
he knocked the ball down in the enfield which saved
a run, which even.

Speaker 4 (19:46):
Set up true that was a huge play. Also yes.

Speaker 3 (19:49):
He also in Game three, hit the go ahead home
run against the Blue Jays. In his first one hundred
and sixty two games with the New York Yankees, he
has forty home runs, forty eight stolen bases, ninety nine
RBIs ninety runs that right field porch. I love everything
about jazz Chi.

Speaker 4 (20:09):
Well, now, all right, Rob, I want you be fair.

Speaker 11 (20:11):
You can love all of that and still say, how
great could this guy be if he wasn't switching gloves
and concerned about the color of his sneakers.

Speaker 3 (20:20):
If he didn't switch gloves and made that error, it
would still be an error, and you wouldn't be bringing
up the other stuff.

Speaker 4 (20:25):
You would just say he watched the ball.

Speaker 3 (20:28):
Bill Buckner was a great was a really good player.
He watched a huge band.

Speaker 11 (20:32):
We're still talking about it, and you just brought him.
Yet you gotta wear it a little bit. I'm saying
the guy. The guy's been a very good Yankee. He's
been a very good Yankee. But you gotta wonder what
is he doing his merchandising or is his gear above
like having having a broken in glove.

Speaker 4 (20:48):
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (20:49):
He's twenty seven years old. He's a young guy would.

Speaker 11 (20:53):
Rome twenty seven is your prime? Come on, now, be fair,
that's your prime.

Speaker 3 (20:57):
But I'm not going to look at one play where
just in that Red Sox series, we know what he
meant on that on that play, and you gave him credit.
So I'm not saying, well, enjoyed that all true, but
he made a great play there, and we've seen him
turn some unbelievable double plays. I'm not gonna kill Jazz
Chisholm for one era, just like got in q Aaron

(21:19):
Judge last year with the easiest pop up in the world.

Speaker 11 (21:23):
He had to see, had to watch that was like,
you know that was on talk shows. You know that
was on regular talk shows. They were they killed him
for that. By the way, you still don't believe in
the Tigers. You have you have eight seconds go ahead,
tigers are dying.

Speaker 3 (21:35):
The Mariner's own school. Well he has a chubby e
r ray against Seattle. The Tigers lose and the season
is over.

Speaker 11 (21:43):
So I like you stick to you know, your your take,
you dig your heels in.

Speaker 4 (21:48):
When you loathe a city, you loath it hard. I
admire that you Thank you, Rob. We gotta let you go.
I'm not gonna be.

Speaker 3 (21:56):
A flip flopper.

Speaker 4 (21:57):
That's not who I am.

Speaker 11 (21:58):
You can tell he's in Los Angeles. One of the
clothes he's going to the game. Today's sunshine, come out.

Speaker 4 (22:02):
Everything's good.

Speaker 11 (22:03):
Thank you, Rob will say my sunglasses exactly.

Speaker 4 (22:07):
Take care, Rob, No, this is ballooning. It's the Parker
pushback shot.

Speaker 1 (22:12):
The here Rob tackles the outlandish takes in Major League Baseball.

Speaker 3 (22:18):
Shut up, I'm Rob Parker, and here's my pushback. Stop
raining on the parade of players and teams celebrating when
they move on to the next round. Why do people
have an issue with this Baseball? They play one hundred
and sixty two games.

Speaker 8 (22:38):
It's hard to win, so you celebrate when you make
those steps.

Speaker 3 (22:43):
You don't wait all the way until. I know. They
don't do it in the NBA, and they don't do it,
you know, in the NFL or whatever. Baseball is totally
different because it's it takes so much and and you
celebrate it. It's hard, so when you win a around
and you're moving on to the next one, you want

(23:04):
to enjoy it. I have no issue with it. I
understand all the hard work.

Speaker 5 (23:09):
I'm not mad at the Blue Jays for wanting to
celebrate beating the Yankees and going on to the American
League Championship Series.

Speaker 3 (23:16):
It's fitting, it's a tradition. The only people who don't.
This is not football, this is not basketball. Baseball has
done this forever. You move on to the next round,
you celebrate.

Speaker 5 (23:28):
It's not a parade happening in Toronto because they won.

Speaker 3 (23:32):
They won the World Series. Ever parade. They don't have
a parade if they lose. It's okay to celebrate in life.
We all take so many l's. There's no reason why
you can't celebrate the wins. So I'm pushing back on
all those naysayers and all those people who don't want
to waste champagne or moving on to the next round.

(23:55):
I'm Rob Parker, and that's my pushback. In the words
of New York TV legend the late Bill Jorgensen, thanking
you for your time this time until next time, Rob
Parker out d can't Davin.

Speaker 10 (24:15):
This could be an inside of Parker.

Speaker 9 (24:17):
See you next week, same bat time, same Matt station.
