Speaker 1 (00:01):
From the berkshears to the sound from wherever you live
in MLB America. This is Inside the Parker. You give
us twenty two minutes and we'll give you the scoop
on major League Baseball. Now, here's Baseball Hall of Fame
voter number fifty seven, Rob Parker.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
Come on, I've been covering Major League Baseball for almost
forty years now, in New York, in Cincinnati, in Detroit,
in LA.

Speaker 3 (00:31):
I love this game. Let's go. Welcome into the podcast.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
I'm your host with a very special Winter Meetings edition
of Inside the Parker. Yes, and coming up on the program,
we'll talk with John Morosi from MLB Network, who'll give
us some insight to the upcoming Winter meetings.

Speaker 3 (00:56):
Also, Skylet Trupple has a.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
New book with inspiring baseball stories for kids. He's one
of my former students at USC, A book that you
definitely want to pick up for the holiday season.

Speaker 3 (01:10):
So we'll do that and much more. Let's go.

Speaker 1 (01:15):
Here comes the big interview. Listen and learn.

Speaker 4 (01:18):
It's so good.

Speaker 3 (01:20):
Now let's welcome into the podcast.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
John Morosi, of course from MLB Network, Fox Sports FS one,
Fox Sports Radio, MLB Insider, and much much more and
a friend of mine, one of the best who covers
Major League Baseball, John, Welcome into the podcast.

Speaker 3 (01:38):
How are you, buddy, my friend?

Speaker 5 (01:40):
That great to be with you as always, hope you
and your family are doing great. We can certainly at
some point break down the Lions' chances of still firing
their way into the playoffs. But the topic at hand
right now, of course, the great MLB offseason.

Speaker 6 (01:55):
Love this time of year, no.

Speaker 3 (01:57):
Doubt about it.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
Let's start with the New York Metro politans who have
made moves we know, and we'll get to the Winter
meetings coming up in Orlando starting on Sunday Monday during
that time. But first, the Mets have made a couple
of moves. They traded from Marcus Simeon from the Texas Rangers,
and they all signs. Soul signed closer reliever Devin Williams,

(02:21):
who was pitched for the Yankees last year, to a
three year, reportedly fifty million dollar plus deal. Let's start
with the Simeon trade.

Speaker 3 (02:31):
Your take on that, well, the.

Speaker 5 (02:33):
Mets got a lot better defensively, rob and that was
a big focus for them. Certainly it likely pushes Jeff
McNeil into a trade scenario where they may move on
from him, But in general, the Mets realized they had
to shore up that part of their club defensively and
also by trading Brandon Nemo, who listen, has had some

(02:53):
great years in New York, but it allows them to
be a little more flexible with their outfield. They now
have the ability to potentially sign a Cody Bellinger away
from the New York Yankees, which would be a really
interesting transaction for them just based on.

Speaker 6 (03:08):
The rivalry, and already now signing Devin Williams too.

Speaker 5 (03:11):
But I think this is what you get when you
have a very imaginative president of Baseball operations in David Stearns,
and an owner and Steve Cohen, who will spend whatever
it takes to make the Mets the best team they
can be. So I liked it. You bring in someone,
in the case of Ob Semion, who makes more on

(03:32):
a per year basis, but the larger contract belonged to
Brandon Nemo in that trade, so it was a really
interesting transaction from that perspective, and then he takes some
of the flexibility. You potentially add down the line someone
like Cody Bellinger, and you've already now signed Devin Williams
with the pen and still allowed yourself to potentially bring
back Edwin Diaz for the bullpen. So Rob, it's a

(03:55):
good start to the offseason for the Mets, but they
have got a lot of work to do, including I
would say, adding one more starting pitcher as well.

Speaker 2 (04:03):
And they definitely got work to do because imagine winning
the Juan Soto Sweepstakes and not even making the playoffs.
It was a bad reason for the Mets, as bad
as it gets. And let's talk about the idea. Do
you expect a big splash on one of these big
free agents by the Mets? Obviously, Kyle Tucker's out there,

(04:26):
Kyle Schwarber, Bobashett, Alex Bregman.

Speaker 3 (04:30):
I mean, there's some pretty good names. And Cody Bellingder
you mentioned.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
Do you expect the Mets to make a big connection
with one of these names.

Speaker 5 (04:41):
I do, and I think that Bellinger is the most
likely of the group to land in New York, although
I would also for that matter, add in some of
the pitching, whether it's from er Valdez, whether it's signing
Rangers Suatez away from the Philadelphia Afillies, which would also
generate plenty of headlines.

Speaker 6 (05:00):
I could see Alex Bragman making some sense there.

Speaker 5 (05:02):
I mean, we haven't really talked about him in detail yet,
but they do still have to figure out what's going
on with Pete Alonzo and and that's a massive part
of their team. If you look at their roster on
paper right now, Rob, and you were to say, Okay,
how have they done since last year, they are not
yet a better offensive club now than they were when

(05:24):
the season ended, because since the season ended right now,
they're they're minus Alonzo and who's a free agent, minus Nimo,
who's traded, and then.

Speaker 6 (05:34):
Plus semon So. Semion's got a lot.

Speaker 5 (05:37):
Of work to do just to get back to being
as good of an offensive player as Nimo was. And
then on top of that, they don't yet have Alonzo
or a replacement for Alonzo.

Speaker 6 (05:46):
So for me, Rob, I think that they have got
a lot of work to do.

Speaker 5 (05:49):
And whether it's Bregman Alonzo, I'm sure they would love
to say both, but more than likely it's probably a
Bregman Alonso or Cody Bellinger conversation. And I would point
out Rob that Bellinger, Alonzo, Bregman all represented by Scott
Boris Yep, no.

Speaker 3 (06:07):
Doubt about it.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
John Morosi is his name, of course, MLB Network, Fox Sports,
Fox Sports One, Fox Sports Radio Insider, and he'll be
at the Winter Meetings starting on Sunday in Orlando for
a few days, four or five days. As we see
some players move around, all right, how here's my give
me some predictions on these guys.

Speaker 3 (06:27):
Or or just you know, Kyle Tucker's been talked about.

Speaker 2 (06:31):
We know after he was traded from Houston to Chicago,
he started off with a bang. He got benched at
one point, and you know a lot of people are
hot on Kyle Tucker. Just your gut, Where does he
wind up or do you think he he potentially could
wind up.

Speaker 3 (06:48):
Is it New York or is it still in Chicago
or Chicago out? What's your feelings.

Speaker 5 (06:53):
I love the fit for Kyle Tucker and the Toronto
Blue Jays, I really do. There's there's a lot to
like about Kyle Tucker's game and how it fits there
with the J's. But I would say this, if Kyle
Tucker goes to Toronto, then it likely means Bobachett is
going somewhere else because we saw in the World Series

(07:15):
how much they like the young.

Speaker 6 (07:17):
Outfit or Addison Barger.

Speaker 5 (07:18):
Well, Bargara could also play third base, so you could
potentially have Bargar at third if you get Tucker to
play right, and then that means that Springer is more
of a DH and then Santandre potentially is there in
left field. That's what I think you could see with
the Blue Jays, And I do think the Giants are

(07:39):
involved in some way, shape or perform as well. It
wouldn't surprise me if the Braves get involved with someone
like a Bob Baschett. But I do think the best
fits for Kyle Tucker would be Blue Jays, Dodgers, Giants,
and I think in a lot of ways the J's
are actually the most natural fit of all for Kyle Tucker.

Speaker 6 (08:02):
All Right.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
Also, I want to get into the Dodgers, who, of
course spent the last two off seasons like ten billion dollars.

Speaker 3 (08:09):
I know it's exaggeration, but give her take give or.

Speaker 6 (08:12):
Take a rounding a rounding number around.

Speaker 3 (08:15):
There, Rob, Yes, exactly. Do we expect big stuff to be.

Speaker 2 (08:19):
Coming from uh the Dodgers or they still do they
not have enough back to back World Series championship They
signed everybody on the planet. Do you expect the splash
sever enough?

Speaker 6 (08:32):
Never enough for the Dodgers drop. There's always something more
for them to do. I look at.

Speaker 5 (08:37):
Them and say, they actually probably need to address their outfield,
because if you look at the way that those games
were ending in the World Series, whether it was keyk
Hernandez and the Pajes justin Dean playing a lot of
center field, they they needed a little bit more. I
think of an everyday presence out there. Confordo came in

(08:59):
last year, didn't have a great season. So if I'm
looking at the Dodgers, I would say their pitching is
probably in a good spot to where they can likely
just roll that rotation forward. Maybe they had a reliever
and in fact that we believe they were in there
on Devin Williams before that transaction happened with the Mets,
so I think they are trying to add one more

(09:20):
relief pitcher. But in general, I think that their their
main area of focus will be the outfield. They would
like to add one more everyday player out there. They
could do it either via free agency or via trade.
But I think in general, Rob the best, the best
statement and assessment in baseball in the last five or

(09:41):
six years. Is the Dodgers have money, they want to
spend money, and they usually can take their pick of
all the free agents because of what a wonderful place
that is to play. So I do think they will
find a way to add in one more everyday player
in the outfield.

Speaker 2 (09:57):
All right, here's another one school, of course, back to
back al Cy Young Award winner.

Speaker 3 (10:03):
You know it's no secret he's.

Speaker 2 (10:06):
Not taking a hometown discount to stay in Detroit. They
gotta pay this guy. Can they pay him? Will they
move him? Is there a deal doable? I mean, like,
you can't let this guy walk after next season. So obviously,
do do Tigers do something now? Or do they do
something at the mid season point.

Speaker 6 (10:26):
I think it's gonna be mid season. Rob can Can
they sign them? Of course they can. I don't think
they will on that.

Speaker 2 (10:36):
I just I don't see it because the money he's
going to get, I can't see it.

Speaker 6 (10:41):
It's just too much. So for them. I'm not saying
it's it's not.

Speaker 5 (10:45):
It's probably not going to be too much eventually in
free agency for a team like the Dodgers or the
Match or the Yankees, whoever it might be. But right now,
based on the way the Tigers do business, uh, it's
it's not likely to work for them, and so I
I think they will keep them for this year only.
I believe they'll start the season with him, and then

(11:06):
if they're if they're struggling and are in the mood
to make guys available, I do think that they will
trade some players, and I think that potentially he could
be one of those guys that they would move at
the deadline if they are not in the driver's seat
in the American League Central. That's the big caveat there,
rob So, But in general, I think he's gonna be

(11:28):
on this team out opening day.

Speaker 6 (11:30):
I'd be honestly surprised if they traded him.

Speaker 5 (11:34):
But if they get the deadline, I think all bets
are off, especially if they're not in the conversation for
the American League Central title at that point in time,
because every team in baseball would love to have a
healthy terror school on the mound, and I think that
they'd be able to get a pretty substantial percentage of
what they could hypothetically do right now. Rob they could

(11:55):
still do it in July for a roughly a half
season of Schooble and and then still be able to
recoup a lot of that value back via prospects.

Speaker 2 (12:05):
All right, one last thing, just give me your like,
knock your socks off, pie in the sky.

Speaker 3 (12:13):
Thing that happens with one of these teams?

Speaker 2 (12:16):
Is there anything like, Wow, I didn't see that coming,
or you know that something that could happen that you
just don't see happen, Like I don't know Pete Alonzo
signing with the Yankees, you know what I mean?

Speaker 5 (12:29):
Or something that so so the name you you asked
the question, Actually that the name that popped into my
mind was Alonzo.

Speaker 6 (12:37):
But the place that I have him going to is Boston. Wow.

Speaker 5 (12:41):
I think that the Red Sox would love Pete Alonso
in that ballpark? Uh, with the Can you imagine Rob,
how many hol ones would Pete Alonzo hit at Fenway
with the Green Monster right there?

Speaker 6 (12:55):
Are you kidding me?

Speaker 7 (12:56):
Oh my gosh, So I've got I have Alonzo as
being a great fit, not even a good fit, but
a great fit with the Boston Red Sox.

Speaker 5 (13:07):
That would certainly upset the Mets, It would upset the Yankees.
I think Petere Alonzo in a Red Sox uniform would
be perfect for a team that is just now coming
into its own. They've got Garrett Croche on the mound.
Now it's time to focus on the lineup and Petere
Alonso the best fit at Fenway Park.

Speaker 3 (13:26):
There it is, oh man, that's something to look forward to.

Speaker 2 (13:30):
I will say this, and the last thing I'm gonna say,
I think the Mets I get you start getting caught
up in numbers and age and all that. Petere Alonso
has been a really good player for them. He's one
of their guys. He can play in New York with
the pressures. He's big home runs in the postseason, and
he doesn't get hurt and he plays every day. I

(13:53):
just cannot get over the disrespect by the Mets to him.
I really I just think he should have been signed.
And you could argue about how much money, but I don't.
I don't know how you let a guy who can
play in New York, stay healthy, hit clutch home runs
and produce at the weight that he does and they're

(14:14):
gonna wind up losing him.

Speaker 5 (14:16):
They still have a chance to sign him, there's still
a chance that they will. But I agree with you
that that when you look at you can look at
any analytics, any metric that you want, Rob, and you
know this from your roots. There is that playing in
New York, being accountable in New York, YEP, being available, consistent.

(14:36):
All that stuff is that is that is not just luck.
That is a skill. Pete Alonzo has the skill to
play in New York. That is the known quantity. So
he already knows what it means to play there. He
loves that uniforms. He's already a record holder now in
that uniform. Sign the man, because if you don't, he's

(14:58):
gonna be etting fifty home runs Fenway.

Speaker 6 (15:00):
Park next season, no doubt.

Speaker 2 (15:02):
His name is John MOROSEI, one of the best in
the business. Enjoy the winter meetings in Orlando and we'll

When Rob was a newspaper columnist, he lived by this model.
If I'm writing, I'm ripping. Let's bring in a writer
or broadcaster, old or new.

Speaker 10 (17:37):
Now let's welcome into the podcast author Skylar Treupple, who
is one of my former students at USC and he's
got a great new book out on Amazon dot com
and it's called twelve Baseball Grades, Inspiring Stories of Baseball Grades,
twelve Uplifting Tails for Kids.

Speaker 3 (18:00):
It's Skyler.

Speaker 2 (18:01):
Congratulations, Mazel Tov, and I know you got to be
thrilled with the release of your new book.

Speaker 9 (18:07):
Thank you so much for having me on, Rob. Yeah,
it's an honor to be back here.

Speaker 4 (18:11):
You were so helpful at USC and in my sports
career and your love of baseball. Having you endorse the
book and say that it's going to help make baseball
cool again for kids is just amazing. It's already a
number one top new release on Amazon, available anywhere that
you get books published by Penguin Random House.

Speaker 9 (18:31):
It's a dream come true to.

Speaker 3 (18:32):
Have this happen. Amazing. Tell me what made you want
to write this, Skyler?

Speaker 2 (18:37):
What was the you know, was there some some situation
moment or a story that you were like, man, that
was interesting.

Speaker 3 (18:43):
How'd you come up with doing this?

Speaker 9 (18:45):
You know, it's really interesting?

Speaker 4 (18:46):
Actually, so after I'm also a journalist like yourself as well.
I write for People Magazine and Entertainment Weekly, so people.
So Penguin Random House saw my People Magazine articles on
LinkedIn that I was posting about inspiring sports greats, specifically
a Nicola Jokic one, and they contacted me for that.
So I wrote the first book here, from Challenge to Champion.

(19:10):
For those who can't see, it's got Lebron, Brady, Simon Biles,
Serena Williams. Then inspiring stories of football greats and inspiring
stories of baseball greats. Here so basically, it's all different
sports in the series.

Speaker 9 (19:25):
I've always loved.

Speaker 4 (19:26):
Inspiring sports stories since I was a kid, specifically my nanna,
my grandma lived with me, and she was a die
hard baseball fan, specifically the Toronto Blue Jays. But she
knew everything about every team, every player, Washington and sixty
games a year. We got satellite TV at the cottage
when I was a kid, just so she could watch
every game. And you know, seeing that passion of hers

(19:49):
well into her seventies, really inspired me to love sports.
She got me in sports, she got me my first
Michael Jordan video two and so, yeah, she was a
diehard baseball fan and it made a real happy So
that makes this book extra special.

Speaker 3 (20:02):
No doubt.

Speaker 2 (20:03):
You know, it's funny that you say that, and I have,
you know, great memories of my grandmother.

Speaker 3 (20:08):
Who was also a big baseball fan.

Speaker 2 (20:11):
And when I went to stay with her, you know,
my men and my siblings, there.

Speaker 3 (20:16):
Was always a ballgame on the TV. You know what
I mean.

Speaker 2 (20:19):
And yeah, you know what I mean, So I know
exactly what you're talking about.

Speaker 9 (20:23):
It's awesome, Yeah.

Speaker 3 (20:24):
It really is. And it gives you a connection to
your grandparents, you know, and and absolutely yeah. So that's
that's great.

Speaker 2 (20:31):
Uh, do you want to share just you know, you know,
give me the whole story, give me one of the
people maybe you talked about in for one of these stories.

Speaker 9 (20:41):
Absolutely.

Speaker 8 (20:41):
Yeah.

Speaker 9 (20:42):
I mean to give a bit of a preface.

Speaker 4 (20:44):
There's there's twelve different stories in there, as you mentioned,
So we have one hundred years of baseball history, from
Babe Ruth and Jackie Robinson to Shohel Tani and Mookie
Betsy got Aaron Judge, Derek Jeter, Roberto Clemente, you know.

Speaker 9 (20:58):
But one of them, probably my face, that I.

Speaker 4 (21:00):
Don't know if everyone knows, is Jim Abbott, the pitcher
born with one hand, throwing a no hitter in nineteen
ninety three. I mean to teach himself to catch the
ball and put the glove on.

Speaker 9 (21:12):
His left hand and put it back on.

Speaker 3 (21:14):
I watched that game. I watched that I watched that game.

Speaker 4 (21:18):
That's that's just incredible because that's one of those stories
again that goes so far beyond sports and it really
really gives the power of human spirit. Also, Mookie Betts
being too small to even make a little league team,
that his mom had to start a little league team
for him to play, and I know he was featured

(21:39):
recently on mlbbro dot com, your website, and I think
that's an incredible story as well, for him to be
now the only four time World Series champion currently playing it.

Speaker 3 (21:50):
Really really is. It tells you how people make their
own way sometimes. You know in life, what inspiring stories
can can.

Speaker 2 (21:59):
Uplift people change their outlook, that it's not impossible to
make things happen.

Speaker 9 (22:06):
Yeah, you never get off and follow your dreams.

Speaker 2 (22:09):
Absolutely, but that's great, Like you're off and running already
number one. I mean, how surprising was that just that
I know you must have woke up and was like, wow,
that's beautiful.

Speaker 9 (22:19):
Thank you. You know, it's really cool.

Speaker 4 (22:21):
It's it's awesome because actually the last two hit number one,
but this one had more pre orders on Amazon than
the last two.

Speaker 9 (22:30):
So that was really exciting to see.

Speaker 4 (22:32):
Because, as you know, Rob, with your work ethic and
all these great athletes work ethic, it's it's hustling, you know,
it's it's messaging people, it's.

Speaker 9 (22:40):
Getting the word out. I did social media.

Speaker 4 (22:42):
Posts for this one, making you know, the green screen effect,
learning how to do that for a show Hail Tani
video on how no MLB teams believed he could pitching
bat on Jim Abbott doing the one hand and no hitter.

Speaker 9 (22:54):
But it was thrilling.

Speaker 4 (22:55):
I went to my old school in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada,
where I'm from, and got to speak to kids in
grade two and three yesterday, and you know, to be
welcome back, like as a successful author and everything. Uh,
to celebrate with my family, to go into the bookstore
and see it. It's a really special experience because you know,
like these athletes, it's overcoming challenges I was. I was

(23:18):
in finance, writing on the side before and then I
pursued my.

Speaker 9 (23:21):
Dream in my career.

Speaker 4 (23:22):
And you know, once I've got you helping me out,
and I watched you growing up, Rob, It's like, Okay,
I'm doing something right here. I'm on my way and
so no for sure, and so to see that it's
you know, my third number one book on Amazon talk
new release, and then you know this one, you know,
the last two are best sellers at the biggest bookstore

(23:43):
in Western Canada, so this one's looking that way too, uh,
you know, signing fifty copies and getting recognized when I
get there it's it's.

Speaker 9 (23:51):
Really it's really really cool success, Scott. Thank you.

Speaker 4 (23:55):
I took a risk on the dream and I'm happy
at paid off and I hope that can help them
fire others, just like the stories in this book, to
pursue their dreams, to go after what they want, to
never give up and believe in themselves.

Speaker 9 (24:07):
And that's very much what this book is about as well.

Speaker 2 (24:09):
Skylard Trumple is his name, and please tell everybody again
about your book, the name of your book where they.

Speaker 3 (24:15):
Can get it. And I just wish you all the success.

Speaker 2 (24:19):
And I'm thrilled that I'm able to even have this
platform for you to be able to share because it's
to me, sounds like a great book for kids for Christmas,
is coming up in the holidays, you know what I mean,
And it's perfect.

Speaker 4 (24:31):
Yeah, thank you so much, Rob No, I mean, it's
an amazing platform to be on, I mean, with with
Fox Sports with you. Like I said, I grew up
watching you and then getting to learn from you, so
it's really cool for me. The book is called Inspiring
Stories of Baseball Grades. It's the third book in the
From Challenge to Champion series, so you can get from
Challenge to Champion. You can get inspiring stories of football

(24:52):
grades the second one, and they all have great deals
on Amazon dot Com right now. You can get them
wherever you buy books any bookstore. Aspiring stories of baseball great. Specifically,
it has twelve stories in it. As I was mentioning,
Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, Roberto Clemente, Jim Abbott, Hank Aaron
in there as well. You also have Mookie Betts, Derek Jeter,

(25:16):
twenty sixteen Chicago Cubs are in there too as a team.
That's a great story as well, Aaron Judge, Shoheo Tani.
So you have tons of baseball history in there, and
I promise no matter what age you are, I've gotten
reviews from people in their eighties two. This book will
make you feel like you can run through a brick wall,
as will all of the books. I loved inspiring sports

(25:37):
stories as a kid, and there's so many great stories
in there. And I hope everyone gets a chance to
buy it and read it because I know that it's
had such a positive impact on people so far, and
I think that's one of the best things you can
do as a journalist as an author is to have
that impact.

Speaker 9 (25:54):
You can follow me.

Are You A Charlotte?

Are You A Charlotte?

In 1997, actress Kristin Davis’ life was forever changed when she took on the role of Charlotte York in Sex and the City. As we watched Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte navigate relationships in NYC, the show helped push once unacceptable conversation topics out of the shadows and altered the narrative around women and sex. We all saw ourselves in them as they searched for fulfillment in life, sex and friendships. Now, Kristin Davis wants to connect with you, the fans, and share untold stories and all the behind the scenes. Together, with Kristin and special guests, what will begin with Sex and the City will evolve into talks about themes that are still so relevant today. "Are you a Charlotte?" is much more than just rewatching this beloved show, it brings the past and the present together as we talk with heart, humor and of course some optimism.
