Speaker 1 (00:05):
This is Straight Fire with Jason McIntyre.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
What is up, Straight Fire Fan? It's me Jason McIntyre,
Straight Lawyer for Monday, Step September. First September's here. Summer
is over. Your happy Labor Day weekend to everybody. Of course,
I have a podcast today because college football was kind
of insane on Saturday and Sunday. We'll discuss all of that,
(00:34):
and I don't think we'll have a pod tomorrow unless
something wacky happens Bill Belichick, if they lose, you know,
maybe pop on, maybe there's some NFL news. So we're
going to focus on college football, and I will be
hosting The Herd again today. It's only one hour, the
final hour. The first two hours are not on air.
But you know, there's so much craziness happened with college football,
(00:57):
but there's nowhere to start other than with Art Manning
and his big debut against Ohio State, the much hyped
Oh my gosh, it's just the best ever opening game,
the best in decades, and the game kind of largely
sucked if we're being real. Okay, my daughter had a
beach volleyball tournament on Saturday, so I'm watching her play
(01:23):
and on my phone. I am watching Texas Ohio State,
and I gotta be honest, the twelve year old beach
volleyball was actually better. I mean, zero points for either
team in the first quarter. Texas didn't score until deep
in the fourth. I mean, and here's the thing. I know.
I'm gonna take some shots at Arch.
Speaker 1 (01:43):
Here.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
Ohio State had two hundred and fifteen yards of total offense.
That's it at home. I mean, I gotta be honest.
Neither of these teams look great. Ohio State running back
James Peoples ten carries for twenty yards. Their longest play
was six yards. If you remove the forty yard bomb
to Carnell Taate, their longest play was sixteen yards. So
(02:06):
if you just look at it from that, oh my gosh.
Either Ohio States offense is garbage. Jeremiah Smith's six catches
forty three yards had two drops, which I believe is
more than he had all of last season the Texas.
Either the Texas defense is amazing or the Ohio State
offense is terrible. One of those two has to be true.
(02:27):
A third thing can be true that I didn't see
greatness from Arch Banning at all, or anything resembling greatness.
The best quote about him is, of course, from Brad
Powers on this podcast. Arts Banning five star, last name,
three star recruit. I did not see any greatness. And folks,
(02:48):
I watched a lot of college football over the weekend.
I'll tell you right now, Carson beck behind that line
in Miami, he looked better and more comfortable than Arch Banning.
And I know you'll say, well, oh, Carson Beckett started
before he's coming off of major injury, guys, a major
injury massive. I thought the kid Uh Sellers at South Carolina,
who I love, is a draft pick. I think, I mean,
I mean, hell Lewis Riddick said he looked like Josh
(03:10):
Allen on a couple of these runs. Sellers looked real
good from South Carolina. I thought the quarterback for Virginia
Tech looked good. I thought, I didn't think car looked great.
There was one other quarterback who am I missing? Oh,
Nussmeyer made some great passes, club Nick not so much.
But like, I don't even think Arch Banning was one
of the five best quarterbacks I saw this weekend. And
(03:32):
I know I know that people are at JAB too harsh.
It was his first real start, Guys, he sat for
two years, two years, and my favorite is always facing
a former NFL defensive coordinator like can we get a
twenty second tieount? And just remind folks, yes, Matt Patricia
(03:54):
was the longtime Patriots defensive coach. I believe that was
when Arch Manning was in elementary school, and then he
got his head coaching job with the Lions. Flopped terribly.
I mean were I think I don't know if they
came on The Herd or on this podcast and talked
about how much of an asshole Matt Patricia was, like
taking away the ping pong table, like no fun. Nobody
(04:14):
liked him. They were terrible, and after that he couldn't
get another job. He was a quote advisor to teams,
and after twenty twenty three advising the Eagles, nobody picked
him up. I'm gonna remind you, Matt Patricia, this defensive
mastermind who slowed Archs Banning. He was unemployed as a
football coach to the best of my knowledge in twenty
(04:34):
twenty four. Go look at his Wikipedia, go see if
you can find him assistant coaching anywhere, advising anywhere. He
was unemployed, So don't act like some genius. I know
he's a rocket scientist in real life. Actually, it slowed
down archs Banning. Bottom line is archs Banning wasn't good.
So Pro Football Focus had the breakdown on passes ten
(04:56):
to nineteen yards downfield, the medium passes, one of five.
On the deep passes, he was three of six, had
the touchdown, but a lot of that was down fourteen
in the fourth quarter. Hey, we got to just chuck
and duck. He did hit the layups six or six
behind the line of scrimmage or at the line of
scrimmage thirteen of eighteen under ten yards. Hey, that's great.
(05:17):
Check He's a checkdown Charlie at this stage in his career.
I mean, I get it. He's young and we should
give him a break. Guys, I'm just gonna remind you
Kim Ward last year at Miami and his opener. I
think it was against let me triple check youre I think, yeah,
it was against Florida, and Kim Ward had been a
(05:38):
starter at Washington State. This is him and the opener
against Florida. Twenty six of thirty five, that's seventy four percent.
Passing arts was seventeen of thirty cam Ward had three
hundred eighty five yards and three touchdowns. He was unbelievable.
That looked like a future number one pick right out
(06:00):
of the shoot against a good team cam wod Oh shucks,
this guy's got some juice. I didn't see juice for
March Banning. I saw maybe two good passes maybe. And
I'm not bashing him.
Speaker 1 (06:12):
I hope he's good.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
The sport needs more quarterbacks, but I did not see
a guy who looks like he's going to be an
utterly dominant quarterback this year. Hell. I mean again, you
don't want to judge it off one game, but that's
what we're here to do, right. How did our spanning
look well in his first game? If I'm grading him
out of get him like a C minus, Like that's
just real. I'm just being honest. I mean, we don't
(06:37):
need to call it bashing. The facts are the numbers
were not good for him. Ten carries, thirty eight yards. Okay,
he's got some mobility, but I'll be honest. You know,
I don't think he's gonna be coming out again. It's
just based on one game. The next three weeks he's
gonna cook and then the schedule gets a little tougher.
Let me just see who they have. So they have
(06:59):
San Jose State Bill smash Utep will be a runaway
sh su. They're playing Sam Houston, Okay, fun. Then they
have a trip against Florida, which will be interesting. Florida
actually looked solid in their opener. I know they didn't
really play anybody and some of these games, you know
(07:20):
Long Island, I mean I could I have played wide
receiver for Long Island this weekend. I'm just kidding. And
I know the quarterback. Everybody's going crazy for both their
quarterbacks put up huge numbers, but you know they won
fifty five. Now, I don't know if Florida's gonna be good,
but I'll tell you this, arts Vand's got three weeks
to get his act together because if he and we
could say he had a C minus against Ohio State,
(07:41):
he can't have a C minus against the Florida and
then Oklahoma. I mean he's got to face Georgia late
in the season. A and M. I think it's early.
I think Texas is gonna be fine. But I didn't
see superstar from arch Banding. Now I'll say this, I
didn't see amazing from Ohio State. Obviously, they've got players.
The large picture takeaway from the weekend, it was just
(08:06):
the lack of offense and the improved defenses and coaches
being scared. It looked like they didn't trust Arch, just
like the Notre Dame coaches didn't really trust CJ. Carr.
Although weirdly I hated the Notre Dame game plan. I'll
get to in a second. But just to put a
bow on Arch again, you know, I'm not gonna say
his stock is dropping like Cracker Barrel, but I am
(08:28):
going to say Arch maybe he's not that guy. It's possible.
I mean, for all the hype, like I just didn't
see anything like any There's no wow there. Now. It's
just one game. It's his first. But he's a twenty
one year old junior. Guys, he's been around the box.
(08:48):
This isn't some true freshman walking in true freshman face plants. Okay,
he's a freshman. He's eighteen. He's got a lot of
girling up to do. This guy's been around the block.
I mean, I'm rooting for Arch. I think he's gonna
be fine. Some of them were glorious, but we'll see,
we'll see, we'll see. With Arch spinning he's for the
next three weeks. No Alway's gonna hear about a damn
thing he does because he's playing terrible teams. Let's just
(09:09):
wait for Florida and Ohio and Oklahoma. Sorry to render
more of a verdict.

Speaker 2 (09:27):
I quickly have to talk about Notre Dame Miami. Guys,
this one hurt man. So I had Ohias State that
was not really a sweat of a win, mild sweat
in the fourth. So I have Notre Dame and they
get the opening kickoff. And you know, I love Marcus
Freeman as a coach. I think he you know, I'm
(09:47):
pretty sure the Bears kicked the tires on him because
Freeman got a big extension after the season and the
Bears were looking for a head coach. It made too
much sense. Freeman will probably be in the NFL in
the next two or three years. I think that's safe now.
He does have young kids, seems to like it in
South Bend. But and NFL is gonna come after him.
He's a great coach. That's undeniable. I can also say
(10:10):
I did not, in any way, shape or form like
his game play against the U. They essentially came out,
you know, remember it was raining. Carr is a first
time starter. He's he's, I believe, a red shirt freshman.
But let's see here. Yeah, he's a red shirt freshman.
(10:30):
And you know, the kid's got some moxie. He's obviously
got talent. But in a hostile environment at night, what
on earth are you doing coming out and going throw
throw throw? It just made no sense. And I texted,
(10:50):
you know, I play hoops with a former Notre Dame quarterback.
He's on my men's league team. So I texted him
and he's like, oh, they're trying to get him comfortable early,
you know. And that made sense. I get that, But
at what point do you say, Okay, you know what,
let's just play to our strengths and let's lean on
the run game. I was. I kept waiting for it.
I mean, they got Jeremiah Love, who is a superstar.
(11:10):
He jumps too much, tries too many hurdles, but Jeremiah
Love is a stud. We're midway through the third quarter
and he had four carries, Like, what the hell game
plan is at? It reminded me no cap of when
the Baltimore Ravens hosted the AFC Championship game against the
(11:31):
Chiefs and they came out and they just like didn't
run the football. It was just pass past, past, past,
past past. It's like, don't outthink the room, play to
your strengths. And I just hated everything that Notre dames
whole game plan and when you you know, incomplete and complete,
not only does this clock stop, but your defense has
to keep going back on the field. And I'll be honest,
(11:54):
I did not think, and I don't think anybody thought
Miami was this good on the offensive line. Their offensive
line was tremendous. Carson Beck had like he was wearing
like a tuxedo in the pocket. I think he only
got sacked once and it was late in the game
by the kid, this dude, Buba car. I won't even
pretend to say his last name, but he was awesome.
That guy lived in the backfield, tackle for loss, sack.
(12:16):
He was an excellent That guy's a machine. Where's number five?
But it just looked like Carson Beck was in total control.
They've got some burners on the outside. They got Tony
the kid. Daniel's been an unbelievable catch. They are stacked
at receiver and Notre Dame playing a lot of man
and it's like, uh oh, you could just see the
problems early when Notre Dame's not being able to hold
(12:36):
onto the football, the wide receiver fumbles, you know, and
they don't keep feeding Love. Price had a thirty. Price
had their longest play of the game until the busted
coverage against later in the game. But Price had this
huge run. The guy had six carries. I'm like, I
just didn't get it. So Notre Dame has arguably the
two best running backs in the country or the best
(12:58):
backfield in the country. Right, Price had six carries, Jeremiah
Love had ten. CJ. Carr had eleven. I'm sorry, I
don't get that. I just don't get that at all.
It just I was annoyed that I bet Notre Dame.
And then they come out with this game plan with CJ. Carr,
a true a Reger freshman on the road throwing like
(13:21):
all over the field, like what are you doing? Anyways,
they were able to get back in the game because
Miami and Mario Crystal bal his his kryptonite is late
game game management, and you know they would throw on
a third down incomplete stops the clock. It's like, oh jeez,
Crystal Ball, Like that's a tough guy to bet on
as a dog, sure, but as a favorite. Just be
careful because whatever's going on in the end of the
(13:43):
game that they always make it interesting. Last year they
had several brutal, brutal games at the end. And I
don't know, I will say, of all the good teams
that played Clemson, LSU, Texas, Ohio State faced off against
each other, I thought Miami looked the best. Now they
(14:03):
were at home. They have a very experienced quarterback in Beck,
whereas cars a red shirt freshman. Arch Manning was essentially
starting his first game. The Ohio State kid his first start.
You know. So there's a lot of new out there now.
Nus Meyer and Klubnik will get to them in a second.
But I thought, without question, Miami looked better than everyone else.
(14:25):
Now that doesn't mean they're going to stay better. Let
me take a peek at the schedule. So they got
Boston College next USF Oh damn, they played Florida too.
They got FSU. FSU was maybe the biggest surprise taking
down Alabama. The ticket on Alabama to make win the
national championship doesn't look great. But if you guys remember
(14:46):
last year Ohio State lost to Michigan still won the
National championship. The Miami schedule does not include Belichick, which
is interesting. Virginia Tech late in the season will not
be easy in blacks You can't just go into Blacksburg
and get the dub. Virginia Tech, by the way, look
good against South Carolina, but ultimately could not get it done.
So that brings us to Nussmeyer and Clemson real quick.
(15:10):
So I liked Clemson in this game. I didn't trust
Nusmeyer and I was wrong about the quarterbacks. You know,
Club Nick I what's his name, Dan Rolovsky was breaking
down a play late in the game on the final
drive or Clubnick fourt down and if you go on
Twitter and search for it, Clubnick drops back to pass
(15:31):
and he just had the laser focus on one receiver
and of course the safety comes over to help and
it's incomplete. But if he had just gone through his
progressions and looked at I don't know this slot receiver,
he was wide open and you know some of these
quarter like car looks like a first progression guy. Now
he had some happy feet for start. Arch Banning was
(15:52):
quick to try to escape the pocket Nutsmeyer. I thought
they did a great job of hanging in the pocket.
He looked good. But club Nick, for whatever reason, just
he didn't. I don't know if he was lack of
confidence in his receivers getting open, but man, he missed
a wide open slot receiver on a pivotal fourth down
play and Clemson ends up losing. Now, it's a lot
(16:14):
of the home teams were victorious over the weekend, right,
you had Ohio State winning, you had Miami winning. That
was in the tough matchups, FSU beating Alabama. The one
team that kind of was a letdown was Clemson. And
I'm not trying to, like, you know, be too harsh
(16:36):
here on on Dablos Sweeney, but if we're doing real talk,
that is a devastating loss for Clemson. You are up ten, Yeah,
but they were up ten to three in the second
quarter and had multiple possessions. Actually no, they Yeah, that's right.
(16:57):
LSU drove and had had that fumble and then it
goes in a halftime Clemson drives down the field, misses
a field goal, and it felt like that flipped the game.
They got a chance to go up thirteen to three.
LSU comes down and scores club interception. LSU missed the
field goal after an unbelievable turn of events where they
had like a touchdown and then it was they were
(17:19):
like no down at the one, and then they reviewed
it and they were like no catch it just u
was one of the worst calls I saw a weekend,
and LSU took over and you could just see Clemson.
They couldn't do anything. The Clemson offense generated a mere
two hundred and sixty two yards. Now, this is why
you want to be bullish on Nussmeyern. Keep an eye
on him when it comes to the draft. First downs.
(17:41):
This is in death Valley against the mighty Clemson defense
that we've been hearing so much about. First downs LSU
twenty five thirteen total yards, three fifty six, two sixty two.
This is the crazy one. So I'm not saying Clemson's
running back university, but they have had some good guys.
Their longest carrey Saturday night was seven yards. The Clemson
(18:03):
running game nineteen carries for thirty two yards a They're
kind of inept running the football, but b LSU's defense
is no joke. Now, if nus Meyer can just keep
it together, he made I thought more impressive throws than
club Nick and arch Manning combined. If nus Myer can
continue to play like that. Brian Kelly, who finally got
(18:26):
his first winning a season opener with LSU, Brian Kelly's
gonna be live this year. LSU's schedule. They get Louisiana
Tech next week and then they play Florida. Holy calf.
Does Florida not I mean, Florida has the toughest schedule
the country. Every team I'm looking at plays Florida. They
do have to. They have to. That game against South
Carolina's gonna be tough. I'm telling you. South Carolina is good.
(18:47):
They got a great receiver who's a potential like a
DK Metcalf guy, and I love their quarterback. LSU does
have to go to Bama, but I don't We don't
know if Alabama's good. LSU has to go to Oklahoma. Jeez,
that's a rough schedule.
Speaker 1 (19:00):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in

Speaker 2 (19:13):
I do want to wrap up by saying, please do
not rule anyone out of the playoff. That would be foolish.
You can rip Arch and say he's stunk. You can
go after Club Nick. You could say, oh man, Alabama,
they're not any good. That's fine, don't rule anyone out
of the playoff. Now, the Alabama schedule has a trip
(19:34):
to Georgia, They've got South Carolina, LSU, Oklahoma, Tennessee like,
they got to play a lot of teams. But I
cannot imagine a scenario where this team continues to be
as bad as they were against FSG. They did look
ill prepared, which is not a great sign. But yeah,
college football opening weekend largely phenomenal. Oh, I forgot the
(19:54):
other other guy I want to talk about real quick.
So do you remember the story of the Tennessee quarterback
Nico Oh. Let me see if I could say his
name Amalaiava. So in the spring he wanted to renegotiate
his NILDL. Tennessee told him bleep off and then he
just said I'm out and he transferred to UCLA. Because
they were willing to give them the back. Well, he
(20:15):
had a tough opener against Utah. Now this was at UCLA.
Nico Amavia Amaliava, who kind of looks the part of
an NFL guy. Right, he's six five, two fifteen. He's
got an arm like he looks legit. I feel bad
with this. Looks like Tarzan plays like Jane eleven of
twenty two for a buck thirty six. Now, Ucla has
(20:38):
nobody to be fair, but this dude was quarterbacking Tennessee
against Ohio State in a playoff game last year, and
he's maybe gonna be lucky to get to five hundred
this year. He also led them in rushing thirteen for
forty seven. Did not look like an NFL prospect, but
he's going to get a look because he's got the
size in the arm. But man, Ucla, these are hard
times for those guys. All Right, it's time to look
(20:59):
at the the NFL Week one schedule, because it's here
really quick, you guys, do I went to Vegas. Obviously,
I had Ohio State, I had Notre Dame. Those are
one and one. I bet Clemson to go undefeated. I
have officially torn up that ticket that was asinine Alabama
to win the Natty. I mean, I'm not gonna tear
(21:20):
it up, but it's a long shot. So in Week one,
I have the Falcons plus two, Yes, Atlanta Falcons plus
two hosting the Bucks. Now the bad news is the
Falcons they had I think two linemen go down, and
(21:40):
since Pennix is lefty, right tackle means more and one
of the guys that went down for the season is
their right tackle. So no idea. Looks like it's ticked
up to two and a half. I'm riding with the
Falcons though in the Dome the dirty Birds, that's one bet.
And I have the Packers minus two and a half
against the Lions that is still at two and a half.
Unclear of Michael Parsons is gonna play. I can't imagine
(22:03):
that he would, but maybe he's on a snap count.
It's at Lambeau. Detroit kind of has owned the Packers
in the last couple of years. And let's just say
that I do believe Green Bay wins this one fairly handily.
And those are the only two I have. My buddy,
he likes Denver and I'm looking at that now. He
(22:23):
got six and a half that's long gone. Denver seven
and a half. The biggest spread against Tennessee ce cam
Ward as a rookie going into Mile High. That is
a very tall task for Ward and company. So I
kind of like the Denver bet. But there's a lot
of hype around Denver. Now it's another one is so
(22:44):
there's a couple We're gonna have this guy on who
always talks about these trends, and again I'm not a
total trend better, but week one there's some interesting stuff.
So you want to look at teams that did not
make the playoffs and bet them against teams that did
make the playoffs. So the FALC fall into that bucket,
Denver does not. Packers and Lions both made the playoffs. Historically,
(23:06):
the team that made the playoffs is overvalued because they
know nobody's gonna bet on the team that didn't against
the team that did. The other is divisional matchups, you
want to take the underdog. I did not do that
with Lions Packers, but that applies to several games. You
would then be looking at Seattle at home against the Niners.
I actually picked up the San Francisco defense and the
(23:26):
Washington defense in fantasy. I'm gonna take a flyer on
one of those two in a week one Jaggs Panthers
would meaning no, no, I'm sorry those are not That's
not a divisional matchup? What am I thinking? The New
York Giants. I don't know if you guys can stomach
that getting six and a half at Washington that also
falls into did not make the playoff Giants versus did Washington.
(23:46):
My guess is we see some sharp money come in
on the Giants day Bole coaching for his job new
quarterback and Russell Wilson that front seven should should get
at Jayden Daniels, and I do believe Washington's a little
bit over value. So Washington. I'm sorry the Giants are
tempting at six and a half, but man, Jayden and
(24:07):
Daniels cost me some money last season. Divisional matchups? Are you?
Are you willing to take the Browns Bengals? The Browns
at home, we're getting six is down to five and
a half, and I think that Oh Chargers in Brazil
on Friday are getting three and a half against the Chiefs.
(24:28):
And then, of course Opening night Eagles favored by seven
and a half at a home against the Cowboys. I
don't know how I get stomach the Cowboys at this point,
but it's.
Speaker 1 (24:38):
Early in the week.
Speaker 2 (24:39):
Gotta look at the injury list I got Bro my
Son has fantasy as a fantasy draft today. I have one. Tuesday,
I have one Wednesday. I had one last week. Fantasy
gambling this week is really crazy. Try to keep your mind.
Speaker 1 (24:52):
I will.
Speaker 2 (24:53):
We'll see tomorrow.
