Speaker 1 (00:05):
This is Straight Fire with Jason McIntyre.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
What is up, straight firefam, It's me Jason McIntyre, Straight
Fire for Monday, October thirteenth. We are getting closer to
Halloween and it's getting scary out here in these NFL streets.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
So that was pretty bad.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
The Chiefs are back, the Dolphins are imploating. By the
time you listen to this, will Aaron Glenn or Mike
McDaniel be fired. I don't know. A lot of stuff
happened in the NFL, and by the way, we did
see a firing. I'm obsessed with the James Franklin story.
He got run out of Penn State on Sunday after
the brutal loss to Northwestern. We will talk about that
on the back end. NFL wasn't super duper interesting Sunday.
(00:49):
A couple chaotic scories we'll get to. But the Franklin
Penn State thing is I mean, the buyout was over
fifty million dollars, just staggering numbers. But we'll start with
the NFL. We'll start with Sunday night. It was not
a super competitive game in the second half, but if
you listen to the podcast on Friday, you knew we
were on the Chiefs Kansas City beats up on Detroit
(01:10):
thirty to seventeen. I you know, tried to stay off
social media when the Chiefs are playing because the jabronis
come after me. You're a hater, You're a hater. Look
out great they are blah blah blah. Patrick Mahomes cooking. Yeah, yeah,
no shit, Sherlock, He's on my fantasy team. But this
was pretty dominant from them. Now again, when the Kansas
City Chiefs are facing Jake Browning, okay, and when they're
(01:33):
facing Caleb Williams, when they're facing Dylan Gabriel, and I mean,
like the Lions stepped up to face one of the
best quarterbacks in the history of the sport. Even though
the Chiefs have been reeling like this was an easy
layup for Kansas City. Now they had the great script
to drive, then the turnover on downs and there was
(01:55):
a couple tense moments where it looked like they weren't
totally clicking, and then in the second half they came
out and just boat raced him seventeen to seven in
the second half, And I didn't particularly think it was
that competitive. And listen, Kansas City look pretty sharp, and
now you got Rashi Rice coming back. I'll just poke
(02:16):
some holes just because that's what I do. I just
I cannot buy this, Zeeb, you're worthy. The chess piet
one carries six yards, two receptions twenty yards. Just stop
with He's not an elite receiver? Is he a nice
change of pace guy in space? Does he give you
more options? Of course? But this idea that he's transformed
(02:38):
the offense. No, I'm of the belief that the Chiefs
are playing this like the Patriots.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
US.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
Dude, the first one. Can you kind of tinker and
mess around? And let's be real. Kansas City was incorporating
a rookie left tackle and they had a lot of
questions on defense, which I think still remain. They had
a tough schedule right out of the gate. The healthy
Chargers are one of the best teams in the AFC.
Then you have the defending champion Eagles, who don't look
(03:04):
as good as they did early in the season. You
had Jackson not Jackson Dart. They faced Russ Wilson, who's
been benched and Brian Dable wants something to do with him,
So that's not impressive. The Ravens win a nindsight doesn't
mean anything. Ravens lose again. They're one and five without
Lamar Jackson. There where they you know. So I mean
I'm more of a game by game I don't just say, oh,
this just happened, so obviously they're fixed. Are they going
(03:28):
to beat Rob G's Raiders next week?
Speaker 3 (03:29):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (03:30):
I think they'll be fine at home against the Raiders.
They have historically struggled against them. I don't know that
they will this time. After that Monday night football against
the Commanders and Jayden Daniels that's appointment television, and then
on a short week at Buffalo just like last year
and Josh Allen. So those two then lead them into
(03:51):
the by and remember they've still got this Denver team twice.
Maybe we'll talk about Denver. It's more about the Jets.
I don't know what to make of the Cowboys, the
culture up in down, Texans up and down again. I'm
not backing off that this is still an eight win team.
Could they exceed that, of course they could, but based
on what I've seen, I mean, I didn't think the
(04:11):
defense was anything special last night. Detroit moved the ball
well at one point in the second half, they were
I think six point seven yards per play. Now, that
did slow down because when they were behind by two scores,
it becomes predictable. They got a pass more. I mean,
Detroit was still good five for eleven on third down.
That was solid. The problem is Detroit's defense could not
(04:31):
stop a nosebleed, and again we saw that happening. So
I don't know, I know I'm gonna be called a hater.
All I'll say is Patrick Mahomes, thank you for the
big Fantasy night propelled by big money league team to
a nice victory. And Travis Kelcey didn't look washed. I
didn't like the Isaiah Pacheco jaw jacking afterward with Brian Branch,
(04:53):
and then Brian Branch basically tried to fight the whole
damn team. You know, Mahomes was like trying to give
him five at Branches basically like leap off. I don't
know what was said. I'm assuming when Pacheco's in his
year saying stuff and then Branch has had enough and
goes up in bunches Isaiah Pacheck, I'm sorry, Jujusus Schuster
just punches them with the helmet on and I'm sitting
here like man is Brand's trying to get suspended for
(05:14):
their next game. I don't know, throwing a punch, not
exactly bright And oh, by the way, their next game
is yeah against Baker Mayfield and Tampa Bay. And without Branch.
I mean we saw Joseph leave that game. They were down,
Terry On Arnold, Detroit's got some issues guys. No Taylor
Decker last night. They're banged up and they I think
(05:35):
Avonte Maddox missed the game as well, missing a lot
of the guys in the secondary. So overall, I'm not
freaking out. You go listen to the Chiefs Homers. Oh
they look great. Do they look better than they did
against the Giants? Of course, teams get better. But is
this a super Bowl team? I don't think so. Is
this a top five team in the AFC? I think
they're they're in the mix. I don't quite think they're
(05:56):
there yet. But again, let's see who's healthy going into
the playoffs. If the Chiefs are great, if the Chargers
are not, that's bad for Key for La. So Rob,
I know that was a hating rant to start the pod.
I don't want to do too much on the Chiefs
because you know we're gonna be talking about them all
season until they missed the playoffs. But you know your Raiders.
You know Gino Smith can't play like he hasn't been playing.
(06:18):
If they're gonna take down the Chiefs next week, that's
for sure.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
Yeah, I mean Gino Smith the look the fans wanted
to be benched on Sunday and then in the game
they want that's how bad he's been. I mean they
were booing him in the middle of the second quarter.
I hate that you've done this to me, j Mac,
because we're friends, we go back a long time, and
I'm a Raiders fans. I'm not allowed to like the Chiefs,
but you're making me defend the Chiefs right now, and
that's just not cool by you. Like again, I agree
(06:44):
with you. Xavier Worthy is not a great wide receiver,
but for whatever reason, his fit on that team slots
guys into a certain order where I'll open things up
for Kelsey a little bit, open things up for Hollywood
Brown a little bit, and so on and so forth
down the line, and they just function better. Most importantly,
having Xavier Worthy and now Rashi Rice coming back, it
(07:07):
helps Patrick mahomes function better. The last three weeks, He's
averaging two hundred and eighty two pass yards a game,
right around seventy percent completion, just over thirty rush yards
per game, ten total touchdowns, one a int and that
was an ugly red zone end zone I int. But
since Xavier Worthy has come back, the Chiefs offense looks
(07:27):
pretty damn good.
Speaker 2 (07:29):
Okay, hold on, Rob, how much of that had to
do with facing the Ravens who can't stop anybody, the
Jaguars who defenses if they're not getting turnovers, they're terrible,
And then the Lions like these aren't. My only pushback
is these aren't great secondaries.
Speaker 3 (07:44):
Now.
Speaker 2 (07:44):
Who are the great secondaries right now in the league?
There aren't many. There just aren't any.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
But go ahead, now, that is entirely fair, and I
would I totally see where you're coming from. My only
counter to that counter is, when's the last time you
saw the Chiefs look this good offensively against anybody? For
three straight weeks like that? That hasn't been their mo
for basically like a year and a half, almost two years.
They have been a middle of the road, slightly above
(08:11):
average offense. Basically the previous two Super Bowl teams. They
were defense first, Pastrick Mahomes, timely on third down, do
enough to get the win, get a clutch, you know,
field goal block or whatever something breaks your way. And
right now, through the last three weeks, they look like
a competent top ten, borderline top five offense. And it
(08:37):
doesn't matter who you're playing, because on a week to
week basis, we've seen now with them over the last
season plus that they could take on My Raiders and
struggle and score nineteen points. They could take on the
Denver Broncos and struggle and score sixteen points. They can
need overtime to get to thirty last season against Tampa,
they could score twenty one against Buffalo last season, and
(08:59):
now this year. You flash forward and in the last
three weeks since Xavier Worthy's been back, thirty seven, twenty eight,
thirty like, they weren't scoring like that last season. They
weren't scoring like that towards the end of last and
the season before that. So credit to them. Will see
how legitimate this is. You mentioned the schedule gets a
little bit tougher, but right now I'm not gonna call
(09:21):
them the Chiefs of Old, but it is nice to
see them be watchable again, at least on television.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
Yeah, they were not ugly. That's a good point. They
were watchable last night as opposed to some of the
drek they turned out. Listen that Giants game was unwatchable.
A few mondays ago, I found a good defense that
they're gonna a secondary they're gonna have to face. That's
Patrick Shirtan twice and the Broncos. By the way, the Broncos.
I didn't wake up for the first half, but I
guess I missed nothing because the Jets had like ten
(09:47):
yards at halftime. But Broncos thirteen, Yes, Broncos thirteen Jets
eleven was an actual score. And you know, I'm sitting
here looking for stories. Rob's like, you know, the and
Glenn press conference. I was like, oh, yeah, I guess,
I guess we gotta touch on that. So last week
after Monday or Tuesday, I went on the Herd and
(10:09):
I was like, listen, man, if the Jets get the
number one pick, I'm not trying to run Aaron Glenn
out of town, but I don't know if he has
the chops to be your coach for a number one pick.
Who's going to be a quarterback. Right, he's a defensive guy.
First time head coach. We're coaching Trezy from what does
he know about offense? You know? And I floated Mike
McCarthy as a name, A guy who was with Aaron
(10:30):
Rodgers had a lot of success, was with Dak Prescott
had a lot of success. Mike McCarthy knows offense. Jets
fans are like, I don't want McCarthy anywhere near the program. Well,
I'm like, well, let's see Jet, Let's see what Glenn does.
Canny Canny pick up some dubs and I have the
notes in my phone from the game. So this is
what the Jets offense did against the Broncos. Fifty seven plays,
(10:52):
eighty two yards. They had negative ten net passing yards
because Justin Fields was sacked wait for it, nine times. Now,
we know that Denver defense is elite. Okay, we knew
that coming in. What we didn't know is that the
Jets offense would be this inept. Justin Fields, if you remember,
in the season opener looked hell a good against the
(11:14):
Steelers up and down the field. They should they could
have won that game. Well, you know, you get some
tape on Justin Field's with the Jets offense, and he
was nine of seventeen for forty five yards passing. It
looked like they just didn't want him losing the game
for them, And to be honest, I'm not gonna lie.
It actually worked because the Jets were in the game
(11:35):
until the final like two minutes they were. They were
right there with a chance to win. Why because Justin
Fields didn't lose it for them. Now, obviously that's not sustainable,
and their defense played kind of sort of out of
their mind and Denver was kind of sleepwalking through the game.
But Aaron Glenn afterward got testy when they asked if
Justin Fields is gonna be your guy? Obviously Tyrod Taylor
(11:58):
is the backup and he's just you know, a clipboard,
older veteran locker room presence, and he was scoffed, like
are you kidding me? Like, I know Rob's not gonna
like this. I kind of agree. I don't think Justin
Fields is the problem. And in New York and big
media hubs, they want heads to roll. Okay, that's why
(12:21):
in Cleveland they know, Hey, I'm not ripping the media, Rob.
You know this. We put Caitlin Clark in a headline
for podcasts last summer, and every podcast was clicking bigger
than normal. Okay, you in Cleveland ask about the offense
or the defense, and nobody gives a shit. You ask
about Schador Sanders maybe getting snaps and that like that happened.
(12:42):
Okay over the weekend after they got lost to Pittsburgh.
It's not gonna happen Chadoor's not, but they they got
to ask that because that becomes a storyline people care about.
So in New York, what do you talk about. You're
not talking about the offense or the defense. You're talking
about the quarterback. And then probably the head coach in
the OC. Is the OC gonna get run off? So
I'm fine with Glenn defending his guy. I will say,
(13:07):
Jets fans just take a deep breath. This was as
good a result as possible. Okay, competitive till the end,
remain winless. So you've got the number one pick. Cover
the spread if you're into that, and they did. They
were able to The Broncos were able to cover teasers.
Remember I told you guys, great teaser weekend. It was
(13:28):
an awesome teaser weekend. It does hurt to see the
longest play the Jets ran all day was eleven yards
that that's a real thing. That's terrifying. But that's the
reality of this team right now. They're not very good.
Speaker 1 (13:43):
You know what.
Speaker 2 (13:44):
I had Rob, a buddy of mine who was in
LA and moved to Georgia, and he is the biggest
Aaron Rodgers fan ever. Okay, and he's now doubled down
since Aaron Rodgers, you know, started bashing Fauci and all
this stuff. And you know, we text bunch and he said,
Aaron Rodgers is now four and one. Remember that Aaron
(14:06):
Glenn whitted nothing to do with him. And I said, honestly,
it's a good thing the Jets moved on from Rogers.
Like Rob, I'm sure somebody this week is gonna make
the argument, hey, man, maybe if the Jets had kept
Aaron Rodgers and my answers unequivocally know, because they were
bending over backwards to appease Rogers, Hey you want this oc,
Hey you want this wide receiver, Hey you want this
(14:27):
guy Like That's not a sustainable thing in an organization
when you're trying to build a franchise in a culture.
You need to move on from that and get that
out of your system. So you move on, even if
it means a step back. Sometimes right, a step backwards
ultimately leads to more steps forwards. What is it two
steps forward, one step back or so. I forget what
(14:48):
the saying is. That might have been like a Paula
Abdul song or something like that.
Speaker 1 (14:51):
But.
Speaker 2 (14:53):
I think the Jets needed to do that. And I'm
gonna just defend Glenn on defending Fields, Okay with it now.
I don't know if Glenn's gonna be the guy I'm not.
I'm not sick of my neck out for him. I
just think in this instance, Rob, he's not wrong. They
just they could not handle this Denver defense.
Speaker 3 (15:11):
Oh. I mean that's a loaded conversation because I want,
at first let me start with Aaron Rodgers. I agree
with you. I don't think having Aaron Rodgers in the
place of Justin Fields makes you marketly better. Now you
might have, you know, be one in five, you might
be two and four. But to say you'd be a
good team with Aaron Rodgers just flat out incorrect, Like
that's that's not true at all.
Speaker 2 (15:29):
Remember they had Defonte Adams last year.
Speaker 3 (15:31):
Yeah, they were losing everybody. Yeah, and they were losing everybody.
They couldn't score more than eighteen points a game. It
was embarrassing. This Aaron Glenn situation is kind of bizarre
to me. One head, I understand your point where you're saying, hey,
he's caping up for his guy, he believes, trying to
show leadership. He's he's doing something that a lot of
(15:51):
rookie head coaches do not do, right, Like they're always
quick to be like, hey, I gotta do what I
gotta do, I gott it, I got gotta win it
all by all me. He's necessary, and what he's doing
instead is Justin's my guy. We selected Justin on purpose.
We paid him a very hefty salary even though he's
been benched everywhere he's been, and we believe in him.
(16:13):
So I understand that point, right, I totally get it.
The problem is, and this is not directed at you.
It's more directed at like the trolls on social media
or like the fantasy fan boys. Because I have just
a field in fantasy too, and he's been great up
until Sunday. They'll look at the games that he's finished.
There's only been three of them so far coming into
(16:33):
Sunday and he averaged two hundred and ninety four total
yards with seven total touchdowns, and you say, well, shit,
he's not the problem, Like it's the defense Aaron Glenn
got get his stuf together, Like, well, what's going on?
The running game, like justin fields has been exactly what
you would hope for. And when I hear people say that,
I'm like, well, you're not watching the games. It's it's
painfully obvious that you don't know what you're talking about.
(16:56):
Because if you went back and watched that Cowboys game
from from last week, like they were down was a
twenty five points before he even moved the ball past
that field, Like it was embarrassing in this game on Sunday.
To finish with negative ten net total yards in the
Year of Our Lord twenty twenty five in the NFL
is crazy. To have as many sacks taken as completed
(17:21):
passes is bizarre. And yet the head coach, whether it's
some blind loyalty or he just doesn't know what he's doing,
refuses to even acknowledge the fact that, hey, my guy
is not playing well right now. I know the ross
stats look okay, but if you watch the way we play,
(17:44):
we don't get anything going until garbage time. Offensively, we
cannot move the ball at all until we're already down
three scores. So I understand what he's trying to do.
I just wish that there would be some kind of
public look acknowledgment that Justin Fields may not be the
answer in New York may not be. Of course, not
(18:07):
to answer, bro, just that at the least be gentle
about it.
Speaker 1 (18:10):

Speaker 2 (18:22):
That being said, listen, you know, sometimes you think you
have your franchise quarterback and then you find out, oh,
that's not the guy, Like Kyler Murray and Arizona. I
don't I don't know. Jacoby Brissett looked better than them yesterday.
And I'll say this, I don't know if two is
the guy. In Miami, I don't know if you I mean,
I don't know how close do you follow this? Chargers
Miami was kind of sort of thrilling. I thought Justin
(18:43):
Herbert had maybe the best play of the season, bending
off an edge rusher in the pocket with like thirty
seconds left to find Lad McConkie in the flat, who
then scoots for forty two yards. Just an unbelievable freaking play.
Chargers win because their kicker dicker is amazing. But then afterward,
you know, Miami's not one in five. Everybody knows McDaniel's
a dead man walking, his house is up for sale,
(19:04):
blah blah. All that stuff is we could joke about.
But then Tua out of nowhere makes it like a
leadership issue, and it's like, hey, we got guys showing
up late for the player only meetings, or they don't
show up at all. And I was like, whoa, whoa
excuse me? Or are you trying to distract from your
three interceptions? No one of them was not his fault.
(19:25):
Wada lost it. But and then McDaniel kind of clarified, Hey,
he's talking specifically about one person. And then it's like, oh,
just how bad are things in Miami? Who's the one
person who's showing up late or just no accountability? And
maybe you know this is the last straw and Stephen Ross,
here's this. We got an embarrassing locker room brutal loss
(19:46):
at home to the Chargers. I don't. Maybe maybe he
makes a move Stephen Ross, the owner who has been
a little impetuous in his career and has done some
wacky things. I'm listen. I don't. I think it's clear
that Daniel has run his course there. They have the
they're at Cleveland this week, and Cleveland's splits at home
(20:06):
and on the road are crazy defensively, so this is
a dangerous spot for TUA. It looks like they don't
have their buy for a little while. Yeah, it's not
until Thanksgiving week. I don't know if mc daniel hangs
on that long. That being said, it did feel odd
Rob that TUA and I couldn't tell. This is more
of a political move where you know there's something really
(20:28):
bad out there and then you just try to shift
it with a crazy story. And then he just is like, Yeah,
somebody's not showing up for team meetings, so wow, who
is at a Chan? It can't be Tyreek Hill. He's
like in a hospital or whatever he had the surgery.
Is it waddle h Chan with somebody on the defense.
I have no idea. Is it a mink of Fitzpatrick?
(20:51):
Like what's going on in Miami? And I think this
could this week could get ugly for the Dolphins. I'll
just say this. McDaniel got to the playoffs twice. They
lost to Kansas City when it was like negative seventy
five degrees and you know, guys were showing up to
the game without a shirt and fingers and they ended
up getting like digits amputated. That's a real story. You
(21:13):
can look that up, like you're not. Miami's not winning
in that weather. And the other time, Tua got hurt
and they had to roll with the backup whose name
is a Skyler Thompson. Skyler Thompson, rob comes legend Skyler Thompson,
and they covered the spread against Buffalo. So McDaniel got
their twice. I do you think he'll resurface rob as
a head coach or do you think he's more now
(21:33):
just an OC because I'm just telling you, this guy
knows offense.
Speaker 3 (21:38):
Yeah. I think that that ship has sailed on him
being a head coach in the NFL at least for
the foreseeable future. But I don't mean short term. I
mean like five to ten years minimum that he's be
considered because this has been so bad in Miami. Like
when teams say they have a culture. They have a
(21:58):
strong culture in Detroit, right, Dan Campbell built a culture.
We talked about the Jets, and now you talk about
these Dolphins. They have a horrendous culture.
Speaker 2 (22:07):
They don't have one.
Speaker 3 (22:08):
They don't have one period, if you want to play that. Like,
there was that big, lengthy report that came out in
ESPN before their win over the Jets where they talked
about a bunch of players who you know, never arrived
in meetings on time, or they skipped them, or they
didn't do whatever they had to do. And they pointed
out in that article that it was specifically two guys
who were the most egregious, Jalen Ramsey who got traded
(22:31):
and Tyreek Hill, who they tingreed with getting traded, ultimately
gets hurt and that's going to the end of his
tenure there in Miami. But one thing that they kind
of buried in that little expose was that guys showing
up late, guys missing meetings, guys not getting treatment when
they're supposed to, YadA, YadA, YadA, were all things that
were happening when they were making the playoffs too. And
(22:56):
once things started to go sideways and Mike McDaniel finally
started to wheel an iron fist and kind of hold
guys accountable. By then, they weren't taking him seriously anymore.
They had decided that he was that dude to steal
on like he was just a brilliant offensive mind, but
he was not a leader of man. He was not
an enforcer. We could treat him like we would treat
the backup quarterback, like, yeah, you're just this nerdy kid
(23:19):
who draws up plays and that's fine, But we're the
big dogs around here. And now you have Tua. And
what's interesting if you compare the Tua comments on Sunday
to what McDaniel said, So Tua, you mentioned it. He
says that it starts with leadership and being articulate that
for the guys, and then what we're expecting out of
the guys helping articulate for the guys, And then we're
(23:42):
expecting for the guys, we're expecting this, we're getting what
we have. Guys showing the players, make players only meetings late,
guys not showing up the player meetings at all. There's
a lot that goes into that, do we have to
make this mandatory? Do we not have to make this mandatory?
Then they asked Mike McDaniel about about ten minutes later,
and Mike McDaniel says, with a stre I know, he
looks kind of gaune and high strung out. At this point,
(24:05):
We've been very accountable to me, So there was something
on his mind regard to specific meetings with a couple
of individuals he's trying to get corrected with direct communication.
Clearly he's sending a message. But from my standpoint, everything
I've asked for the guys they have delivered on. So
if your quarterback is saying there's a leadership problem, but
your coach is saying there's not a leadership problem, like
(24:27):
one of them is obviously lying number one, but number
two the bigger problem. It seems like both of those
guys have leadership issues, and he might see a situation
here come opening day twenty twenty six where they're both
out of Miami.
Speaker 2 (24:39):
Yeah, I mean it'll be interesting. I don't like, is
there a market for Tua because he's lefty and because
of his strengths and weaknesses, you have to build a
specific system for him. And I just I don't know
how quick that of a turnaround that is is. It's
not quite moving the Titanic when you see an iceberg.
But like all of a sudden, you need you got
(25:01):
to have an awesome right tackle, and you need wide
receivers who are willing to go over the middle. You
need speed, you know, like you there's not a lot
of rosters built that way. You'd have to totally upend
what you're doing. I honestly don't know, Like I mean,
is mac Jones gonna have a bigger market than two?
Not that two is a free agent or anything, But yeah,
it's a fascinating scenario unfolding in Miami.
Speaker 3 (25:24):
One other one real quick.
Speaker 2 (25:26):
Uh, it's San Francisco forty nine ers situation is just
getting downright insane. So they lose Bosa for the season.
The best ad rusher, top five or six d rusher
in the league, maybe top three depending on who you
talk to. Then yesterday Fred Warner gets rolled up on
broken ankle. It was kind of narley. You see instantly,
(25:47):
Bucks players around Warner will like signaling, get over here quickly.
It's bad. And Fred Warner is the best linebacker in football, Like,
I don't think there's a even any doubt that he's
number one. You've now lost your best ed rusher and
your middle linebacker. On defense, how are you gonna compete?
You know they have the easy schedule, But on offense,
(26:11):
something's going on with Juwan Jennings. He had a rough
game and then got into it with Shanahan on the sideline.
Still no Brandon Ayuk, Still no Kittle. McCaffrey's workload is
too big. Ricky Piersoll did not play. I mean, it's
just too much at this point. It's crazy. Rob. I
look at the NFC and I'm like, I thought San
fran legitimately could have hosted the NFC championship game, and
(26:36):
now I don't know if they're gonna be healthy enough
to get how are they gonna get stops? I mean
Warner did every Sorry, Fred Warner literally did everything. Calls
the play, snuffs out, runs, screened back. I mean, he's
so good. Now you're in a three way tie at
the top of the West with the Seahawks and Rams.
You do have a win over the Seahawks and a
(26:58):
win over the Rams. Tampa's five in one and they
look pretty good. I'm not gonna lie. Atlanta's under some pressure.
We'll get the best bets Atlanta needs to win tonight.
The way the Panthers are playing at home Greenen Bay,
not overpowering but good. We'll see on Detroit, We'll see
on Minnesota, and then you've got Eagles and Commanders, and
it's like a pretty good team in the NFC is
(27:19):
going to miss the playoffs. I just hope it's not
the Niners due to these injuries. Man, it just sucks.
Speaker 3 (27:24):
Yeah, it was brutal. And if you haven't seen the
Fred Warner video yet, if you're planning on watching it
this morning, just make sure you don't have a queasy
stomach because anytime you mentioned as soon as you see guys,
especially from the other team, like throw their hands over
their face and immediately call for the medical staff, you
know it's bad. And so it was absolutely brutal. And
(27:47):
I've made this joke on this podcast for a few
weeks now, like whoever is the strength of conditioning coach
with the Niners should probably be, you know, creating a
new resume right now. At this point, I can't know
if I could blame that guy, Like are they just cursed?
Because what happened with Fred Warder was such a freak play,
Like he he's been involved in that kind of action
(28:11):
thirty five times a game in an NFL season, like
in an NFL game whatever, fifteen seventeeny times a year,
Like there was nothing unique about that play. He just
got rolled up on in the wrong way and his
ankle snapped then half like it was brutal. And now
you got this situation with Juwan Jennings and Kyle Shanahan
(28:31):
going at it. You know, Ricky Piersall, I don't even
know exactly what's going on with him because he'll be
questionable for two days during the week, and I was like,
he's not playing at all, and then we were told, hey,
brock Purty could play if it was you know, really necessary,
and then it's like, well he's not also not practicing,
and you know he may or may not be ready
in a week or two. It's like, well, could he
play or is he going to beat out for a
(28:52):
month now? Like, well, what is it? And we have
no idea when I was coming back, nick Bo, So
you like, their whole team is banged up, and this
has been a recurring theme for them since they may
have run into Super Bowl in Vegas a few years ago.
So it's just really disappointing. Because I believe, like you said,
I think that they have the kind of team and
(29:15):
the kind of weaponry where they could have really made
some noise this year in the postseason. And now to
your point, I don't even know they're gonna make the playoffs.
Is how banged up they are.
Speaker 2 (29:23):
It's tough elsewhere. I went three and one in the contest.
Have the Falcons tonight at four and a half was
the line, So not upset with that. Let me just
do James Franklin before we do best best tonight. So
James Franklin loses as a twenty plus point favorite in
back to back weeks and then gets run out of
(29:44):
town on Sunday, out of Happy Valley. This is how
crazy college football is. In January, he was in overtime
against Notre Dame on super close to getting to the
national championship. That was in January. Starts the season, I believe,
number two behind Texas. They lose to Oregon. Okay, no
(30:04):
harm there, and then they lose two more and it's like,
oh my gosh, that just that is one of the
fastest snowballs ever where it just gains steam and they
were just like, let's cut the court Now Rob is
super into with this one theory. Okay, I'll let him
positive theory gets out there, but before I do, I
(30:27):
just want to say this, This college football world has
gotten so crazy. We saw Jimbo Fisher at Texas A
and M I think his buyout was close to seventy
or in the seventy million, and for years they were like,
you can't run him out. Is biots too big? And
I don't think people understand the passion of these boosters
(30:48):
in college football. These people are legitimately crazy. Their expectations
are completely unrealistic. And this idea that anything less than
getting in playoff, competing for a national championship, anything less
than that, and it's like, well, we'll find someone else
who can do it. I mean remember Kylin de Boor
(31:08):
after that lost to Florida State. There were people, legitimate humans,
not bots, online saying, man, there's too much freedom at practice.
They're playing this rap music. You know, It's just it's
people aren't locked in. This is unacceptable that he's not
gonna last. And then there's these call in shows like
these people have nothing going on, whatsoever, zero going on
(31:31):
in their life that they're so committed to Alabama football.
That like on a Tuesday night, they're calling in and
getting riled up over a loss to FSU. Meanwhile, two
months later, guess what. Guess what, Alabama's probably the top
five team in the country, maybe three, and the kid
Ty Simpson looks amazing. So let's pump the brakes on
(31:53):
running guys out of town. Now. Franklin's a different story.
He has not been able to win a big game
in forever, and now he's using games as a big favorite.
That's scary. The worst part is he loses his quarterback
Drew Aller, to a season ending injury in the lost
Northwestern and it's like quarterback down, season over. I mean,
(32:15):
you might as well run him out now right and
get a jump start on the process. You could target
who you want. Do you want the Indiana coach Signetti?
Look what he's done in two years? Do you want now?
He's sixty four years old. I don't know how appealing
that is. Do you want to go after someone else
like you? The earlier you fire your coach, the quicker
you can get on the ground to chase the guy
(32:38):
you want now. I saw Oregon State fire the coach,
some other school fired the coach, but obviously Penn State
was the big one. But Rob, I do want you
to float this theory that was out there. It's spicy,
but I just I don't know. I'll let you go.
Speaker 3 (32:53):
I mean, I don't know if I would call it
a theory because this guy is a legitimate reporter and
he is reporting this. Okay, So Mike jay Asty, I
think I'm saying that right works for wv Sports, Pittsburgh Sports,
and he also does some contributing for Yard Parker. So
take that for what you will. Reported on Sunday afternoon
that a source of Pence they told him that Adidas
(33:16):
drove the James Franklin firing and they are why it happened.
They committed to pay most, if not all, of the money.
They also wanted a new coach before recent losses, but
that made it hard for anyone at PSU to argue. Now,
he updated a couple hours later, saying someone at Pence
they reached out to him and say that the Franklin
firing was made by the administration, did not mention Adidas
(33:38):
at all. But he stands by his reporting and he
trusts his source. If that is true, that maybe we
talked about being in the wild wild West of the
nl nil era and collectives and things of that nature.
If this reporting is true, and I'm sure we'll find
out more in the next twenty four to forty eight hours,
(34:00):
then this would be an absolute bombshell in college sports
because we've been led to believe, now for whatever four
or five years that the big money boosters you got
that at A and M. You got them in Miami.
You know, pick your favorite school, Ohio State. You got
these collectives, some of them better than others. You know,
(34:21):
Oregon's got a good collective. USC's is getting better. You know,
George's got a good collective. Texas got a good collective
that they can find ways to funnel money into the
program to make sure that on every Saturday afternoon we
have a competitive roster, no matter who the coaches, no
matter who's in the stands, that our team is going
(34:43):
to be highly compensated with high end talent. Well, what
if we get to a point now if this kind
of reporting is true where it's like, we're not worried
about Joe Smith, a guy who owns a auto dealership
in Tuscaloosa. No, we're not worried about Uh. Jenny Johnson,
(35:06):
who was an alum in nineteen eighty seven, she came
into the money when her husband died and she's gonna
donate ten million dollars to the program every year as
a tax ride off. Like, we're not worried about that. No,
what if and listen again, Let's say Nick Saban will
still that Alabama. What if Coca Cola came out and said, hey,
we pay Nick Saban a hell of a lot of
money to do every press conference with a Coca Cola
(35:28):
sitting in front of him that he never drinks, by
the way, which is incredible. Yeah, I've never actually seen
him drink of Coca Cola. What if they come in
and say, you know what, not only are we gonna
pay Nick Saban six million dollars, we're gonna drop in
sixteen or sixty million dollars to ensure that not only
is Nick Saban doing well on the field with the
(35:52):
best roster money can buy, but every time he wins,
you are gonna see Coca Cola on his chest, Coca
Cola in his hand, and Coca Cola behind him. Like,
what's to stop that from happening? And if you got
Nike and Adidas and under Armour getting involved this kind
of thing because there is no policing it anymore. You
can invest however much money you want. Don't let the
(36:14):
government tell you any differently, this could be a watershed moment. Again,
if this is true in.
Speaker 2 (36:19):
College football, yeah, yeah, you are correct. That would be
a little crazy, although at this point, Rob, I wouldn't
rule that anything. There's been so much disruption in college
football with this nil. I personally like it, you know,
I mean, we hear stories, you know, my daughters playing volleyball.
You know, she's middle school level but on a really,
(36:41):
really good club team, and we hear stories about volleyball
players women in college getting like twenty five fifty thousand
per college volleyball players and that's not even like elite players.
So I do like that everybody's getting paid. The downside,
of course, is you know, you just articulated that the
(37:01):
potential for this not great. What if put that on
a kid? What if Coke says hey man, Jeremiah Smith,
We want to buy you, right, We want you drinking
coke on the field before afterward placement. We want all that,
and we'll give you, you know, a five hundred thousand
dollars for like a week for the Michigan game. I mean, Rob,
I heard a story. I don't know how much of
(37:24):
it's out there, so I'm not going to get all
into it. But you know, these college football games, these
these big ones are have such a huge audience, right,
and and the networks have leagues that where they can
lock up the best games. Well what about the what
about the non league games? Like next week Notre Dame
(37:46):
plays usc That that's a non league game that's huge.
And what if, like you know, they didn't have a
TV deal and they decided what if you know, Amazon, Primer,
Netflix wanted to throw big, big money at us for
a standalone game where you know you're going to get
a huge audience. What if that was the next frontier
(38:08):
in college football. Because I don't think we're far off
from that. I mean, honestly, you know that Notre Dame
has a huge audience. I mean NBC has a deal
with Notre Date. Okay, you know usc is bank, they
have an audience, they have a following, and the rivalry
is good. So if you're Netflix and Amazon and U seegs,
these these football games are doing well, in the NFL,
(38:30):
why don't we try college? Is that what's stopping those
guys from getting in the in the in bed with
college football games. Now, obviously they can't get in for
like Michigan Ohio State. But remember with the playoff, you're
going to get an expanded.
Speaker 3 (38:47):
Schedule.
Speaker 2 (38:47):
People are more willing to play non conference games because
guess what you still get in the playoff with two
or three losses, right, yeah, well, okay, sure we'll take
I don't know, five ten million dollars for what game
for Old Miss Oregon or whatever the game is. You know,
I just the money is getting crazy, and I don't
(39:08):
think it a bad way. I just think it a
disruptive way. And I hate the phrase I'm here for it,
but I'm definitely here for chaos in college football.
Speaker 3 (39:16):
Yeah, me too. And I'm glad you brought up the
Notre Dame deal because as wild as this idea is, again,
we'll see if it gets confirmed in the next couple
of days. Here of Adidas being the deep pockets in
Penn State and they're the ones calling the shots there,
we're kind of already seeing that we're NBC. You mentioned
paying big money to be basically the exclusive home of
(39:37):
Notre Dame football, Right, So would it be I'm not
saying this was happening, but would it be out of
the realm of possibility if somebody at NBC says, Hey,
you know, I know we got exclusive rights and the
team's not really doing too well. We're losing too many,
you know, close games where we can't guarantee a spot
in the playoffs. Here's another fifteen million. Go get us
(39:58):
Kirby smart, like, like, what's to stop them? Or more
specifically Oregon, who you can argue maybe this was a
different time back then because this was all under the table.
Was Oregon not already doing this with Nike where Nike's
just gonna pump in money over and over and over,
and they're gonna be the ones calling the show where
(40:18):
Phil Knight's like, Hey, I want Chip Kelly to be
my guy. I want you to recruit that one kid
in Florida. I know we're in Oregon and nobody ever
goes up to Oregon. What the hell to do there
in Oregon? But we're gonna find a way to get
a bunch of five star players because they're bought and
paid for by Nike. Though this could be the new Frontier,
and like you said, I am totally here for it.
Speaker 2 (40:39):
Yeah, it's exciting stuff.
Speaker 1 (40:41):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in
the nation. Catch all of our shows at Foxsports Radio
dot com and within the iHeartRadio app search FSR to
listen live. The only thing better than sitting on your
couch watching the games, taking money while you do it.
(41:02):
Here's your best bet.
Speaker 2 (41:04):
Real quick on bets bets. I am on Falcons plum
four and a half. That's gone at three and a
half tonight against Buffalo. I have financially invested in the
over forty nine. Looks like that's forty nine and a
half currently. I just don't see either side getting many stops,
and probably last team with the ball wins. Atlanta is
FIRSTKI at home. They're much more difficult at home than
(41:24):
they are on the road. Although they did lose are
They won at Minnesota, but again that was a dome situation.
I don't see any major injuries. But Rob, do you
have bijon in fantasy?
Speaker 3 (41:36):
I do, and I'm horrible at betting, but I'm glad
that you're saying take the over because I need a
big knighte from bejeon for me to go ahead and
win this this week.
Speaker 2 (41:43):
It just I mean, Buffalo can't stop anybody. I mean,
the Saints were hanging with them, nip and tuck. And
I know people will say, well, look at the Patriots
game that went under it. It was going on, folks,
that's a Patriots style. Neither of these teams wants to
slow it down. They want up tempo. Look what the
Falcons did last week or no, sorry, two weeks to
go to Washington. They pumped tempo. And by the way,
I think Atlanta was on a bye week bye last week,
(42:05):
and usually teams coming off the bye are ready to
click on all cylinders. Of course, not the Pittsburgh Steelers
because that's not what they want to do. But yeah,
I think Buffalo probably wins, but I'll take Atlanta in
the points. And I had liked Washington a lot against
the Bears, but I don't know Bears coming off of
bye Washington. We'll see if McLaurin plays. It's up to
(42:27):
five and a half. I mean, if you want a
money line teaser, let's see what it pays. Bill's Bears,
I'm sorry, not Bears. Bill's Washington. If you want to
do one hundred pays one thirteen, that's not bad. I
mean who lose? Who screws that one up?
Speaker 3 (42:45):
Who's more likely to screw that up? Probably Washington?
Speaker 2 (42:48):
Probably Washington.
Speaker 3 (42:49):
Yeah, just just because, like you said, you know, the
Bears coming off of Bye. Ben Johnson, for all of
his faults, like with his personality, is a great play
caller and is a finet like fantastic scheme guy. So
I could see them scripting up maybe the first two
or three drives and come out like Gangbusters, you know,
and put potentially And that's what was true this whole
thing up.
Speaker 2 (43:09):
Well, it's interesting dan Quinn last year really bottled up
Caleb and then dan Quinn really bottled up Ben Johnson
and the Lions offense. Now, the Lions did have a
bunch of turnovers in that NFC Championship game, but I
give the edge to Quinn. If McLaurin plays, that's a
huge win for Washington. Then you can win over the top. Underneath,
I'm facing deebo in fantasy, so I hope he doesn't
go off. Yeah, how about a Bill's Washington moneyline parlay?
(43:31):
In addition to the over let's take those to the
window and get get paid.
Speaker 1 (43:36):
All right.
Speaker 2 (43:36):
We are back tomorrow, probably talks to baseball, I don't know.
The Dodgers are still alive, the Yankees are done, and
then of course the NBA rapidly approaching. All right, see
them all
